F

illing a calendar with all the great things to do in a Colorado summer is a pretty rewarding task.

After all, how else would Boulder Weekly staffers get to find out about all the fantastic events, concerts and festivals going on this year? And we’re not just talking about the things happening locally. In this calendar, we went out and found just about every interesting thing going on between Memorial Day and Labor Day in every nook and cranny of the Centennial State.

The wealth of opportunities for fun over the next few months borders on obscene. There are more music festivals in more beautiful places than you can imagine — from the Western Slope to Pagosa Springs to Greeley to Steamboat.

And that doesn’t count the hundreds of great concerts that will be happening this summer right here on the Front Range.

Masochistic mornings

The quasi-exclusive, semi-secret, pseudo-underground Satan’s Minions Scrambling Club

regory Canyon at 6 a.m.,” Bill Wright’s email read. “We’re gone by 6:05.” I was meeting Wright and one of his friend’s, Danny Gilbert, the next morning for a pre-work circuit in Chautauqua: a jog up to a couple of the more obscure Flatiron formations — Morning After and Challenger — quick free solos of each, more jogging to the top of Greens Peak and finally back to our cars at the trailhead.

Wright is one of the founders of Satan’s Minions Scrambling Club (SMSC) — a quasiexclusive, semi-secret, pseudo-underground group of athletes (average and world-class alike) that meet for early morning outings in Boulder’s Flatirons. As the club’s name alludes to, these outings are not mere hikes, but hybrid climbing and trail running excursions.

When I met Wright and Gilbert, there were summary introductions and then we hit the trail. Wright quickly hopped over an orange mesh barrier blocking the trailhead for no discernible reason.

“I look at it as more of a guideline than a rule,” he said. We assumed a steady clip, never too fast to hold a conversation. We ran on the flats and walked briskly on the steeps. At a certain point we left the trail and made a beeline for the base of Morning After — a slab with a few hundred feet of 5.4 climbing and Boulder Weekly

a short 5.7 roof right in the middle of the wall. Breathing hard from my first run in longer than I cared to remember, I took a deep breath and started up behind Gilbert and Wright, sans rope or harness: just chalk and climbing shoes.

The roots of Satan’s Minions date back to the late ’90s when

Wright found himself wondering just how fast he could climb the Third Flatiron, car-to-car. He had heard of others doing it in under an hour, but he was skeptical. Along with friends George Bell and Ken Lydens, Wright took his own crack at it. “We did it under an hour,” he says. “It opened up my eyes. Just blew me away.”

After a climbing accident that resulted in a broken back and prevented him from cranking hard, Wright started to rack up some serious mileage on easier Flatirons scrambles as well as another way to get his climbing fix. Originally, Wright would go out mornings with his friend, Mark Oveson. Then one day, Wright invit-

ed a friend from work to join, who in turn invited another co-worker, who didn’t mince words about Wright’s masochistic morning scrambles: “My advice: Stay as far away from him as possible. He sounds like one of Satan’s Minions.”

And so, Satan’s Minions Scrambling Club was born.

The founding principles of the club have changed little since those early days.

“Morning scrambling — whether new routes, old routes or what have you — is a great way to start the day.

Run, climb, run,” Wright says.

As the club grew during its first few years, Wright also began organizing annual time trials of the Third Flatiron, the same challenge that had inspired the group’s founding. Within a few years, the straightforward Third Flatiron time trial morphed into what Wright christened the Tour de Flatirons: a pre-determined course, slightly different every year, linking up several formations in Chautauqua.

The Tour has attracted a number of elite athletes since its inaugural installment. One such individual is Boulder speed-demon Stefan Griebel.

Griebel, a 41-year-old electrical engineer, was 28 in 2003 when he “emailed Bill (Wright) out of the blue. I needed some challenge in my life, I guess.” Since then, Griebel has gone from the “casual weekend climber” to one of the preeminent speed climbers in the country. In addition to holding speed records on both the First and Third Flatirons for a time, Griebel currently holds the joint speed-record on Eldorado Canyon’s famous testpiece The Naked Edge, as well as the fastest known time (along with professional ultrarunner Anton Krupicka, also a Minion) on the Longs Peak Triathlon — a round-trip biking, trail running and climbing trifecta from Boulder to the summit of Longs.

For several years early in Griebel’s SMSC tenure, it was just him, Wright and ultrarunner Dave Mackey competing in the Tour de Flatirons.

“Bill podiumed every race,” Griebel remembers with a laugh. “He was always psyched about that.” But as SMSC grew in the mid-2000s, upwards of 20 people started show-

ing up for the Tour and the individual Flatiron time trials.

“It got us noticed and the City Council cracked down,” Griebel says.

While it was not necessarily targeted exclusively at the Minions, a City Council rule that prohibited “competitive events” — defined in its parlance as “four or more persons [trying] to exceed the performance

of each other or another person in a physical activity” — on City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks lands, the general sentiment is that it was designed at least in part to stymie SMSC’s activities.

The Minions get around these restrictions through semantic gymnastics of their own.

“I try not to use the word ‘race’

because that’s not permitted,” Wright explains in talking about the time trials and the Tour de Flatirons. “If I’m actually racing anyone, it’s the two people that are closest to me, and then everyone else is just out there doing their own thing.”

On more than one occasion, a would-be Minion showed up in running shoes. (Most of the Minions use approach shoes with sticky climbing rubber on the soles).

“They were sketchy. Very sketchy,” Wright says. “I thought one of them might fall. And this is still real climbing — you fall, you die. It was a horrible experience. So they weren’t invited to join.”

Technical climbing experience is a prerequisite for Minions’ membership, to be sure. “We don’t teach or encourage soloing. And we’re not guides. There are accidents every year because people think the Flatirons are easy,” Wright says. “We’re not recruiting or encouraging people to solo, and we won’t teach people how to do it. You don’t get into this group as a beginner. But if you’re already doing that stuff, then you might want to join us because there are lots of like-minded people.”

“Which I think is a good thing to do,” Gilbert reflects. “It’s better to make sure you’re solid before you try to join.”

Nowadays to become a Minion you have to go on an “interview scramble,” essentially what I was doing with Wright and Gilbert on April 25.

“Minions is a closed group. You have to know someone to do an interview scramble,” Wright explains.

That morning, as we padded up the thinly featured, bullet-hard sandstone of the Morning After Flatiron, Wright kept on filling me in on SMSC’s history.

When we got to the short 5.7 section, he deftly pulled the bulge and talked Gilbert and I through the moves. He knew I was a competent climber, but even still, this was part of my interview.

Wright and the other Minions know they walk a fine line. But they’re not harming or interfering with anyone.

“The rangers know about the Minions, they’re not dummies,” Wright says.

“But we don’t bother anybody. If this happened all the time, it might be an issue. But not that many people know about it really. I think we’re good just to continue the way we’re going.”

And the Minions are some of the best ambassadors around for the joys of the Flatirons.

“We’re going fast, but we always try to be good stewards,” Wright says.

On SMSC’s closed, invite-only email list, most of the threads are about giving back.

“I’d say about 90 percent of the emails you get from the Minions group are stuff about trail maintenance and stuff like that, or about mobilizing if somebody’s lost and needs help,” Gilbert says.

Twenty years on from the beginning of Bill Wright’s obsession with doing the Flatirons fast, Satan’s Minions are still carrying the torch.

“The Tour gets more and more complex every year with enchainments and weird routes people have never done,” Griebel says.

The classic time trials of the First and Third Flatirons, while no longer official SMSC annual events, are still frequently individual legs of the Tour, and personal projects of most Minions. Matthias Messner currently holds the unsupported First Flatiron speed record (from the trash can at the top of the stairs at the Chautauqua ranger station and back) at 32 minutes, 18 seconds.

“I think Matthias’ record is now the hardest record in the Flatirons. I think it will stand for a long time,” Griebel says.

Despite Wright’s need for speed, his preponderance with fastest known times and the Minions’ informal tryouts, being an elite athlete like Griebel, Krupicka or Messner is far from a requirement.

“It’s a great group of people that are really cool, cheer each other on and are just out there to have a good time,” Wright says. “Even as the Tour has gotten bigger over the past couple years, people run by you and everyone gives encouragement.”

Time trials and the Tour aside, most SMSC activity remains perfectly within the limits of activities permitted within Boulder’s Open Space and Mountain Parks, like the three-person party that Gilbert, Wright and myself comprised.

“Bill started it originally because he wanted to get in more pitches before work,” Gilbert says. “It’s the family-man time. Because most of us have other stuff to do after work.

I think that’s what drew me to it,” he adds. “Because of all that, speed is important — you can’t do the First Flatiron and spend five hours on it before work — but it’s not the end goal. We’re just a bunch of people who want to get out and have some fun before work.”

Gilbert, Wright and myself got back to the Gregory Canyon trailhead around 8:30 a.m., after having dispatched 4.3 miles and gained 2,329 feet of elevation. After a quick goodbye and exchange of numbers, we all drove off to work.

A 96-year-old rodeo’s quest to save Western heritage

obsessed with developing the West and fiercely encouraged those on the Eastern seaboard to migrate toward sunset. Eventually he popularized the phrase, “Go West, young man, and grow up with the country.”

Five years after the Civil War ended, Greeley sent his agriculture editor Nathan Meeker on a reconnaissance mission with orders to find the perfect spot to set up a utopian agriculture colony. Greeley’s vision incorporated a group of highly-educated and pious families, involved in sophisticated farming systems, collectively forging a new America.

Meeker scoured the Front Range and eventually settled in the swath of land nestled between the Poudre and the Platte Rivers. He planned for Greeley’s community to maximize the available irrigation technology, and he started building ditches for farms. He also immediately broke ground STAMPEDE continued on page 18

on a school. On Dec. 4, 1869, Meeker wrote “Call for a Western Community,” a letter that Greeley published in the New York Tribune to announce that applications were open for those interested in the utopia. Meeker received over 3,000 letters in response, of which 324 originals are now kept in the Greeley History Museum.

In the end, Meeker chose 700 families and directed them to the Rocky Mountain outpost that he continued to develop. In April of 1870, the first members began to trickle in: the original adventurous, risk-taking transplants that founded Weld County. It would be another six years before Colorado became an official state.

Predictably, farming became the cornerstone that supported and eventually succeeded Greeley’s utopian vision. Aside from a massive production of potatoes and cattle, Greeley was also making 25 percent of the nation’s sugar by 1920. The town continued its Fourth of July community celebrations to honor the farmers and their families, and in 1922, with 2,500 people in attendance, the yearly festival was officially christened the Greeley Spud Rodeo.

In the near-century since, the one-day event has grown to span 12 days, and its attendance has multiplied a hundredfold. Last year, DeWitt estimates more than 250,000 people passed through the festival, some flying in from countries across the world. The name has changed a handful of times, transitioning from the Spud Rodeo to Greeley’s Rocky Mountain Stampede, to the Greeley Independence Stampede, and finally, in 2006, settling at today’s name: simply the Greeley Stampede.

“Our goal is to expose as many people and as many different cultures as possible to this Western heritage. Rodeo and agriculture are a huge part of our past,” DeWitt says. Although he didn’t grow up in rodeo culture himself, he’s immersed himself in it over the last seven years, starting with helping the Stampede organize its music and entertainment packages. Now, the familycentered culture, high-energy people and supportive community that he’s found through rodeo are the most influential and positive parts of his life. This gives him the confidence that others can come into the rodeo experience blind and be transformed in the same way.

In recent years, the Stampede has initiated a big push to broaden its scope of “rodeo” and attract families or individuals who may not have been interested in the archetypal macho-cowboy-riding-angry-bull trope. The music that the Horses trot in between events.

Stampede organizes is one of its big initiatives, and thanks to DeWitt, it’s become one of their most attractive elements.

“My goal is to reach out to the young, the old, the foreign — I don’t care who you are,” DeWitt says. He wants the diversity in the Front Range to be reflected at the Stampede, and he believes the concert series stands the best chance of broadening attendee demographics by appealing to a larger pool of people.

“We have two days this year that we have devoted stages to nothing but Hispanic music,” he says. In addition to this, they’ll have headliners like the Barenaked Ladies, Toby Keith, Chase Rice and numerous other musicians to fill in the 50-plus music acts over the course of the festival. The organizers are hoping this draws in new spectators, getting them to the event, and then letting the “rodeo bug” take over, says DeWitt.

The Stampede is still ripe with old-timey cowboy culture and events, while other non-traditional events include the RV demo derby. “We sell that out every year. We’ll have five to six RVs in an arena just crashing into one another,” DeWitt says. “It’s a crowd favorite for sure.”

By the end of the Stampede, both DeWitt and Herman hope that people who have taken the chance to visit understand that the rodeo wouldn’t be what it is, even in it’s new-age-meets-old-age glory, without the legacy of the county’s founders. “That’s an integral part of the event. The Greeley area has such a unique Western history within its agriculture community,” Herman says.

“The rodeo is a huge community event, and we have such a great community.

That’s what this whole ordeal comes down to. Let’s celebrate that.”

Fungi in the sun How mushrooms connect everything in nature

A

s the warm days of summer set in and the Earth grows more vibrant by the day, stop and take a moment to consider a story about the interconnectedness of nature.

The tale starts with the symbiotic love affair between plants and mushrooms that bloomed nearly 5 million years ago, according to Jennifer Frazer, a freelance science writer who leads the Scientific American blog “The Artful Amoeba” from her home in Superior, Colorado.

“Every indication that we have from fossils is that [plants and mushrooms] colonized land together. It was a team effort,” she says.

She explains that our human existence is due in part to fungi (officially pronounced FUN-jai). Without the sometimes slimy, sometimes stinky organisms, Frazer says Earth would stand no chance of supporting its array of animals and plants. In other words, in a world without mushrooms, we’d all be dead.

At the moment, we have an abundance of fungal friends operating the soil of Colorado’s plains, foothills and mountains. Too many to count, in fact, says Dr. Andrew Wilson of Denver’s Botanic Gardens, who estimates we know potentially less than 5 percent of the total estimated diversity on the planet. He confesses: “If we talk about a scale of one to 10 on what we know [about mushrooms], we might have just bumped up to a two,” and then adds that if we were to try documenting the rest of the fungal species, it would probably take a millennium to get them all down.

Despite this daunting drought of knowledge, Wilson has made fungal diversity the center of his life’s research. His work has taken him all over the globe and led to his appointment as the Gardens’ assistant curator of mycology earlier this year.

In the Botanic Gardens’ Sam Mitchel Herbarium of Fungi, Wilson rolls a giant row of mushroom specimens along a track. He’s hoping to show off one of his favorite fungi: the “puffball” genus Astreaus.

A single row in the herbarium, which contains one of the most actively curated and diverse col-

lections in the Rocky Mountain region, contains up to 12 cabinets, each with 24 bins. One bin holds a box containing up to 50 specimens, which are catalogued and organized according to the specimen’s genus.

Of the nearly 20,000 different kinds of “mushroom mummies” held in the lab, Wilson’s favored Astreaus collection is special because of how it’s evolved to react to atmospheric moisture. When it’s dry out, as it often is in Colorado, the so-called “earthstar” fungus will close up its petal-like structure to protect its fragile puffball — a spherical house for its spores. Mushrooms need moisture to survive, so this opening and closing mechanism developed as a survival tool for fungi living in arid climates. When the climate is once again hospitable, the earthstar opens like a flower in order to disperse its spores.

“What I do is kind of like a forensic investigator,” Wilson says. “I take the molecular evidence, like the scene of a crime, to reconstruct what happened.”

He’s talking about the diversity and evolution of mushrooms; Wilson specializes in using DNA and genome sequencing technologies to understand how fungi evolve — like why the puffball became a puffball. This is important in his line of work because the more we understand how and why mushrooms evolve the way that they do, the more we can understand changes occurring in local ecologies and the environment.

In many ways, both Wilson and Frazer act as representatives for the “fungal nation,” a sort of underground heartbeat for Mother Earth.

“My role as a scientist,” Wilson says, “is to try and communicate what’s going on in nature.”

Turns out, there’s a lot going on that took humans years to catch on to.

“There’s a huge group of fungi called the mycorrhizal network that partner with plant, tree and grass roots to help them acquire minerals and water,” she explains in person. “Plants and trees aren’t great at harvesting those alone. In exchange, plants give fungi food.”

In addition to this nutrient trade-off, plants can also use the mycorrhizal network to communicate.

As Wilson says, “Trees of different species work in cooperation with each other in the forest.” One tree can produce sugars from photosynthesis, and the fungi can transport those sugars to a different tree.

“Fungi are the conduit that help these trees stay connected.”

In Colorado, this looks like what happened in the 2000s, when the mountain pine beetle came to town and the lodgepole pine wasn’t ready to defend itself against these invaders. The pine’s underground neighbors, like the white king bolete mushroom, can feel the alarm reverberating through the tree’s sugar. So they stand at attention and deliver extra nutrients upstairs so the pine can concoct defensive chemicals that help ward off attacks.

too — overworked, starved and exhausted. The specter of global warming does not discriminate.)

Magic aside, this symbiotic relationship is vital to the livelihood of at least 90 percent of herbaceous organisms.

“If the fungi leave, probably the vast majority of terrestrial life on the planet will die,” Wilson says.

And we know what happens if plants die: we die.

This is especially important to note in places like Colorado, where arid climates, high elevation and cold temperatures can already make life for mushrooms a trying ordeal. The burning of slash piles to help mitigate wildfires also creates problems for mushroom life in Colorado.

Wilson explains that when these piles are burned, they produce so much heat that it sterilizes the soil up to four feet beneath it. Nutrients like nitrogen, which are essential to the health of both fungi and trees, become volatilized and dispersed into the atmosphere.

“The losses in diversity that ensue take a long time to recover,” he says.

These are practices that mycologists need time, and funding, to research.

As both Wilson and Frazer highlight in their work, tree, plant and mushroom diversity is paramount to the health of our ecologies, and can give us helpful clues for the best conservation practices, thus how to keep our own species alive.

“Here in the Rocky Mountains we have this incubator playground to explore a lot of these questions,” Wilson says. “Compared to other landscapes, the sheer amount of undisturbed and preserved habitat makes it special.”

Instead of running around trying to fill in the 95 percent knowledge gap (although he does do a bit of that), Wilson tends to favor the big questions: How much do we want to focus on documenting biodiversity as opposed to documenting what is all this biodiversity doing to the planet? How do the changes in the ecosystems today affect the fungal communities that are likely very important for the sustainability of the ecosystems?

“As we’re becoming more and more cognizant of our human impact on the planet,” Wilson says, “we want to understand what is necessary to preserve or restore habitats. Understanding what’s happening to the soil communities, and specifically fungi, is going to be critical in maintaining and engaging in conservation and restoration practices.”

Though the plant-mushroom affair started millions of years ago, both Wilson and Frazer are still negotiating the story of the plant-mushroom-human relationship. Once the snow fully melts and the fungi pop back up, Wilson will start his first official Rocky Mountain foraging season, and will spend the next five months collecting data, hopefully reducing our knowledge deficit from 95 percent to 94.9 percent.

hink about the number 730. Pretty big number, right? Well, if you are a beer lover, and we know you are, you should be particularly thrilled about the number 730. That’s because there are 730 more microbreweries in this great country of ours this year than there were last year.

And in case you’re counting, that brings the grand total of microbreweries in the U.S. to a whopping 5,234. That’s a whole lot of really good beer.

It’s also a bit overwhelming if you’re one of those hyper-focused souls who just has to tick off every name on the list. And that’s where BW’s Boulder County beer tours come in.

We live in a place blessed by natural beauty, kind people and some of the world’s finest beer.

In fact, Boulder County is home to 45 of the best, most creative microbreweries found anywhere.

Three of them — Oskar Blues, Left Hand and Avery — are rated in the top 50 microbreweries in the country. That means their beer is great and they make a lot of it. But Boulder County’s other 42 breweries also have great and interesting beer. It’s just brewed up in smaller quantities.

All told, when you figure in the seasonal offerings from the

county’s beer makers, our home turf produces somewhere around 1,000 different beers every year. These folks have light, dark, sweet, sour, fruity, dry, wet, bubbly, flat, nitro or any combina-

tion thereof. That’s the fun of it. Sure, you’ve got your favorites, the three or four beers you stop by to drink on the way home from work or keep in your fridge. But when was the last time you really went tasting, took that walk on the wild side? Well, that’s too long.

If you wait six months between tasting tours in Boulder County, there’s likely another 30 to 50 new beers being brewed up.

But don’t despair. BW is here to help organize your beer drinking outings. If you follow our advice and tick off one beer tour a week, you can taste every beer in the county in just six weeks.

And while we can’t guarantee it, we bet that by the time you’ve finished, you’ll have a whole new set of favorite brews.

If you have a designated driver and you’re willing to taste, not guzzle, we think you could complete these six tours quite a bit faster. How fast? We don’t know, which is a bad answer for inquisitive journalists. That’s why in the very near future, we’re going to set the mark for tasting every single beer in the county.

This summer, Boulder Beer, the first and oldest craft brewery in the state, is expanding into the heart of Boulder. When Dale Katechis started his Southern-style restaurant in Lyons in 1997, a brewery wasn’t initially part of the plan. However, he soon turned his love for homebrewing into a basement brewing operation and the awards started pouring in. As the company grew, it revolutionized the craft brew industry by canning its beers and selling to retailers. And the rest is history. Now 20 years later, the flagship restaurant of the Oskar Blues brand in Lyons still brews the company’s small-batch beers, while serving up the classic Cajun and Creole dishes and live music it started with.
