But in case you’re struggling to fill your weekends (or weekdays) with all the fun imaginable, we’ve compiled a calendar that covers the official months of summer. CU Art Museum

Galleries feature both changing and permanent exhibitions, and this year will include an interactive light and sound exhibit by Jen Lewin. The museum also offers a collection study center. The building itself is an environmentally sustainable design created by Kallman, McKinnell & Wood and OZ Architecture in Denver featuring water-saving and energy-efficiency strategies.

Little Thompson Valley Pioneer Museum

The Children’s Museum of Denver started in 1973 in a converted school bus. Now, the museum’s exhibits include a real fire truck. Its interactive playscapes, daily programming, story times and special events are geared toward children up to age 8.

The Lafayette Miners’ Museum is housed in the home of coal miner William E. Lewis, who offered his house up as a meeting place for miners during a strike.

The museum now preserves the pioneer heritage of Lafayette, including a “school room” with pictures, trophies and memorabilia of the town’s schools.

It’s Electric, June 1, CU Art Museum, Boulder Playing around with art doesn’t have to be reserved for a kid’s museum. At least Boulder-based new media artist Jen Lewin doesn’t seem to think so — her interactive sculptures, which have been exhibited at Wired NextFest, Burning Man and SXSW, invite art lovers of all ages to use their senses and join in the fun. From June 1 to July 27, the CU Art Museum will house It’s Electric, featuring six new sculptures that, if they’re anything like her past work, will be larger than life. Her projects have included “The Pool,” a field of light-up circular platforms that respond to running and jumping users, and “The Arc Harps,” a huge instrument that plays music when a participant breaks a beam of light.

Lewin will be the second artist in CU Art Museum’s three-part ART/TEKNE series that aims to showcase well-known Colorado artists who use technology in creative and illuminating ways.

The Longmont Museum & Cultural Center explores history from Native Americans to NASA astronauts in a collection that spans 14,000 years. This summer’s exhibits will include sculptures by 20 LEGO artists in Build! The Amazing World of LEGO, running June 8 through Sept. 8. Located off of Flagstaff Road about 7.5 miles west of Boulder, Walker Ranch offers visitors a plethora of outdoor opportunities, including fishing, hiking and horseback riding. Purchased by James and Phoebe Walker in 1882, Walker Ranch is home to the restored homestead of the Walker family. While the homestead is closed to the

public most of the year, visitors can tour the site and watch costumed volunteers demonstrate the daily life of a pioneer ranch during special events.

The year was 2000, and things didn’t look good for rock music. But Portland altpsychedelic-power pop group The Dandy Warhols was also on the rise, releasing Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia that year, featuring its biggest hit, “Bohemian Like You.” The Warhols staked their claim to psychedelic indie stardom, and they’ll Dandy Warhols revisit the album on this tour.

Colvin, a folk-rock singer-songwriter whose best-known song is the catchy, mesmerizing 1997 story-song “Sunny Came Home,” has steadily released albums and collaborations for almost 25 years.

While “Sunny Came Home” might have been her peak — earning her Grammy awards for record and song of the year — Colvin has continued turning out strum-filled, ear-catching folk. Denver is the last stop on her 2013 tour.

The band broke up in 1997 and didn’t reunite until a successful tour in 2010. Encouraged by the crowds at the tour, the band released its first album in 16 years, King Animal, in 2012.

But then-Mayor John Hickenlooper gave jam band legends Widespread Panic that honor in 2008, when he named June 27 Widespread Panic Day. The group will just miss that date this year, as the group has set three dates at its usual haunt, Red Rocks.

Widespread Panic will be looking to extend its lead in the Red Rocks sold-out-show rankings: The Georgia jam band currently holds the title for most sold-out shows at Red Rocks with 38.

The Colorado National Monument is one of the great landscapes of the American West, with towering monoliths, red rock canyons and plenty of wildlife. There are so many sightseeing opportunities in downtown Denver that it’s hard to know where to begin. Take a tour of the state Capitol building, then stroll across Civic Center Park to the City and County of Denver Building. Within walking distance are the Denver Mint, the Denver Art Museum and the History Colorado Center. It’s about a five-hour drive, but it’s worth it. Survey the craggy hills and explore fragments of a long-ago world where the largest land creatures of all time once roamed and died. You can view rock art, check out fossils, explore homestead sites and even go whitewater rafting. Take I-70 west to Rifle, head north on Hwy. 13, west on Hwy. 64 to Dinosaur, then east on Hwy. 40 two miles.

There are a couple of sections along this rail line that are a real thrill — you are riding along the edge of a cliff staring down hundreds of feet to the Animas River below. As its name implies, this train runs between Durango and Silverton in the gorgeous San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado. It operates out of its original 1882 depot in downtown Durango, and is a can’t-miss attraction if you’re in the area.

Trains began running on May 4, and the season ends Oct. 26.

Chimney Rock, which was just declared a national monument in September 2012, is a majestic rock spire between Durango and Pagosa Springs. The area was home to the ancestors of the Pueblo Indians, and the formation is considered spiritually significant by many tribes.

The Flagstaff Nature Center teaches visitors to Boulder’s Open Space and Mountain Parks about the wildlife, plants and history of the city’s plains and foothills. There are activities and games designed to challenge children of all ages, and they have friendly and knowledgeable volunteers to answer all your questions. Colorado has several historic tourist trains, but the Georgetown Loop is closest to the Front Range — only about 45 minutes west of Denver on I-70. About 35 miles northeast of Alamosa is an amazing sight that almost looks out of place among Colorado’s mountains. Bands on the Bricks: Wednesdays from June 12 to August 14 From oldies to alternative and everything in between, Bands on the Bricks is Boulder County’s premiere outdoor summer concert series taking place in the heart of Boulder on the bricks of the Pearl Street Mall. NedFest, August 23 to 25, Nederland The first NedFest was essentially a backyard kegger thrown by “Michigan Mike” Torpie in 1995 as a tribute to Jerry Garcia the week after his death. Before he himself passed away a couple of years ago, Torpie turned the event into an annual jamgrass extravaganza. The 2013 version promises to be as great as ever, featuring acts like Dr. Ralph Stanley and his Clinch Mountain Boys, Los Lobos, Hot Buttered Rum, Grant Farm, Great American Taxi and Keller Williams. This updated version of the classic story unveils the villain’s perspective, from her tragic childhood to her quest for revenge. Sandboarding near the Castle Creek Picnic Area at Great Sand Dunes National Park

Great Sand Dunes National Park Colorado may be dry, but only the Great Sand Dunes evoke the classic desert landscape. Visitors to this national park usually can’t help but run and play like kids, sliding around in the deep, shapeshifting sand. It’s no mirage: The dunes are constantly moving and changing shape. But you won’t get lost, because you can use the Sangre de Cristo Range towering nearby to orient yourself. Some visitors bring old skis and snowboards to race down the dunes, sometimes resulting in high-speed, sandy crashes. But they’ll have good tales to tell at one of the park’s several campsites later. Any sandy bruises could be soaked away at nearby hot springs. And it’s only a few hours’ drive back to Boulder.

Boulder Open Space & Mountain Parks

The city’s mountain backdrop receives more than a million visits each year from locals and tourists alike, offering more than 144 miles of trails for biking, hiking and rock climbing for all ability levels. Rich in flora and fauna, Boulder’s parks and open space lands are one key factor in the health of the city’s population, which has been called the most fit in the nation. Here are some of the best OSMP highlights:

Chautauqua Meadow

900 Baseline Road, 303-441-3440 This landmark has beautiful scenery, outstanding hiking trails and one of the premiere cultural venues in the state of Colorado. Chautauqua Park and surrounding areas act as a hub for many mountain trails, including the Chautauqua, Mesa, Baseline, Bluebell-Baird, Royal Arch, Woods Quarry and the Flatiron Climbing Access trails.

Flatirons Vista

0.3 miles south of Highway 128 on Highway 93 This trail system offers access to the Flatirons Vista, Prairie Vista, Community Ditch, Doudy Draw, Spring Brook Loop and Goshawk Ridge trails.

If you cross Highway 93 at the stoplight, you can reach the Greenbelt Plateau, High Plains and Marshall Mesa trails.

Gregory Canyon

West end of Baseline Road Populated by marmots, canyon wrens and a variety of beautiful flora, this area provides access to the Gregory Canyon, Saddle Rock, BluebellBaird, Amphitheater, Flagstaff and Crown Rock trails.

Mount Sanitas

0.5 mile west of 4th Street on Mapleton Avenue One of the city’s most popular trails, the Mount Sanitas system connects you to the Valley, Mt. Sanitas, E. Ridge and Dakota Ridge trails.

National Center for Atmospheric Research

West end of Table Mesa Drive A short distance to the west of NCAR, you can catch the Mesa, Skunk Canyon, Mallory Cave, Bear Canyon, Bear Peak West Ridge, Green Bear and Fern Canyon trails.

Boulder County Parks & Open Space

303-678-6200, www.bouldercounty.org/os Visitors can hike, bike, snowshoe, cross-country ski or ride horseback through gorgeous Colorado terrain on almost 90 miles of beautiful trails in Boulder County. The county divides into regions: the mountains and foothills, plains north and plains south. Here are a few of the trails. A complete listing, descriptions and maps are available on the county website.

Bald Mountain

Bald Mountain Scenic Area, located five miles west of Boulder on the south side of Sunshine Canyon Drive (County Road 52), offers views of the Great Plains to the east and the Continental Divide to the west from its easy loop trail.

Betasso Preserve

Located at the junction of Boulder Canyon and Fourmile Canyon, Betasso Preserve is a 773-acre preserve. Trails include the 3.1-mile Benjamin Loop, a steep and narrow trail, and the 3.3-mile Canyon Loop Trail. Both allow bikes except on Wednesdays and Saturdays. To avoid collisions on the single-track loops, bikers are only allowed to travel in one direc-

tion, which changes from clockwise to counter-clockwise every couple weeks.

Trail signs indicate the current direction.

The trailhead is located six miles west of Boulder off Sugarloaf Road. A new connector trail also allows you to reach the preserve from Fourmile Canyon Drive. This makes it much more feasible to bike to Betasso from Boulder — but be prepared to carry your bike down the stone steps.

Caribou Ranch

Caribou Ranch is a 2,180-acre pristine patchwork of wetlands, meadows, woodlands and streams. The ranch is closed annually April 1 to June 30 to protect elk, which calve in the area, and migratory birds. Trails include two short loop trails open to hikers and horses. Bikes and dogs are not permitted. Caribou Ranch is rich in music history: A recording studio on the property drew the likes of Elton John and Billy Joel until it burned in a fire. Caribou Ranch can be accessed north of Nederland or south of Ward on County Road 126 off of the Peak-to-Peak Scenic Byway.

Coal Creek Trail/Flagg Park

Coal Creek Trail is a soft-surface trail that parallels Coal Creek for 10 miles from 66th Street in Superior to 120th Street in Lafayette. Flagg Park is the Lafayette extension of the trail, and is accessed off Flagg Drive, east of 120th Street and south of Baseline Road. The property address is 12400 Flagg Dr. in Lafayette.

Hall Ranch

Hall Ranch includes 12 miles of multiuse trails on which to explore over 3,000 acres of rolling grasslands and sandstone buttes. The entrance to Hall Ranch is found on Highway 7, one mile west of Lyons.

Heil Valley Ranch

Moderate trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding loop through the 5,020 acres of the Heil Valley Ranch. The area boasts forest meadows and picturesque vistas. The entrance to Heil Valley Ranch is located on Geer Canyon Road off of Left Hand Canyon Road, northwest of Boulder.

Lagerman Reservoir

This 116-acre reservoir offers nesting habitat to pelicans and is located 2.5 miles southwest of Longmont. Fishing is allowed on Lagerman Reservoir. See the county’s website for seasonal wildlife closures. The entrance to the reservoir is located about three miles north of Niwot on the west side of North 75th Street.

Legion Park

An easy, short loop trail offers picnic tables and views of the Flatirons.

Legion Park is located east of Boulder on Arapahoe Road, a half mile west of 75th Street.

The trail connections to Caribou Ranch provide extra mileage for a total round trip of about 5.5 miles. The Mud Lake trailhead can be accessed off County Road 126, one mile north of the turnabout in Nederland, off the Peak-to-Peak Highway.

Rabbit Mountain

Explore the abundant history of Native Americans and early settlers on the five miles of trails at Rabbit Mountain, touring grasslands and ridgetop pine forests. Rabbit Mountain is located on North 53rd Street, about 15 miles north of Boulder off of Highway 66, approximately two miles east of Lyons.

Walden Ponds Wildlife Habitat

Former industrial gravel pits were transformed into this thriving wetland habitat that now provides some of Boulder’s best bird-watching. Walden Ponds is located five miles northeast of Boulder, on the west side of North 75th Street, just one half mile south of Jay Road.

Walker Ranch

Visit the historic homestead at Walker Ranch for a glimpse of how early settlers lived and what wilderness made it all worth it. The ranch was once one of the largest cattle ranches in this region of Colorado. Explore the property on 10 miles of trails crossing 3,504 acres of backcountry. Walker Ranch can be accessed from either the Meyers Homestead Trailhead on the west side of Flagstaff Road, or the Walker Ranch Loop Trailhead on the east side of

Flagstaff Road, about 7.5 miles west of Baseline Road in Boulder. The Walker Ranch Loop can also be accessed via the Eldorado Springs State Park, with parking at the Crescent Meadows lot.

State Parks

Attracting more than 11 million visitors per year, Colorado’s 43 State Parks not only play an important role in the state’s economy, but also contribute to Coloradans’ quality of life, offering some of the highest-quality outdoor recreation destinations in the state. Barr Lake

Eldorado Canyon State Park

Alberta Falls in Rocky Mountain National Park

park, but most trails re-opened in April. Trail closures still exist where burned wooden bridges need to be replaced. With 26 miles of trails and backcountry camping approved, Lory State Park makes a great getaway. Some trails provide access to the Horsetooth Reservoir’s bays and coves. Power boaters are steered toward neighboring Boyd Lake State Park.

St. Vrain State Park

3785 Weld County Road 24 1/2, Firestone, 303678-9402 St. Vrain’s ponds are home to egrets, pelicans and cormorants, which can be viewed from trails or from boats. Visitors can also fish for bass, crappie, blue gill, yellow perch, pumpkinseed, rainbow trout, carp and catfish. The park has 87 campsites for yearround camping.

National Parks

Colorado’s 13 national parks saw more than 5 million visitors in 2012. These parks preserve cultural heritage, historic landmarks and natural landscapes. Visit nps.gov for a guide to all the parks in the state.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

970-641-2337 www.nps.gov/blca Carved by the Gunnison River over the past couple million years, the Black Canyon has some of the steepest cliffs and oldest rock on the continent. It’s about 250 miles southwest of Denver. The north rim is 11 miles south of Crawford, and the south rim is 15 miles east of Montrose. Hikes along the rim are a less demanding choice; hiking all the way to the river requires traversing unmaintained steep trails and is

recommended only for the very physically fit with solid self-rescue skills.

Great Sand Dunes National Park

On U.S. Highway 160 or State Highway 150, 35 miles outside Alamosa www.nps.gov/grsa 719-378-6399 Grasslands, wetlands, conifer and aspen forests, alpine lakes and tundra for hiking and backpacking crowd into the Great Sand Dunes, but the centerpiece attraction, the tallest sand dunes in North America, offer in-land beach play along Medano Creek and sand sledding. Take I-25 south to U.S. 160 west, then State Highway 150 north.

Rocky Mountain National Park

1000 Highway 36, just outside Estes Park Visitor information: 970-586-1206 Campground reservations: 877-444-6777 www.nps.gov/romo/ From wet, grassy valleys dotted with elk to the wind- and snow-sculpted peaks, including Longs Peak, Rocky Mountain National Park preserves some of Colorado’s pristine mountain wilderness. Hiking trails range from all-ages accessible to challenging mountain ascents, and the park boasts some excellent alpine technical climbs as well. Stay in your car and look over it all from the Trail Ridge Road (open summers only), which crosses through the park, passing over the Continental Divide. Or get close to one corner of the park’s more than 200,000 acres on a backpacking trip — backcountry permit and bear canisters required.

Take Highway 36 (28th Street in Boulder) up through Estes Park and follow the road signs.

A gun fight at Boom Days in Leadville Aspen Eco Fest 2012

Boom Days, Leadville, Aug. 2-4 Longing for a taste of the Old West? Leadville revives the traditions — complete with locals attired in period costumes recreating that frontier feel with a few rowdy nights in the historic buildings that still crowd downtown streets — at the annual Leadville’s Annual Boom Days.

This three-day celebration of the area’s mining heritage, which has been honored by Congress as a Local Legacy Event, entertains visitors with mining competitions, motorcycle games, live music, a gun show, a craft fair and a parade. The festival also includes a Pack Burro Race, billed as a quintessential Colorado sport. The animal’s pack is weighed, and then racers run, guiding their burro, along a 21-mile route through the mountains around this two-mile-high town. This race is a crowd favorite, and is followed by a reception and awards ceremony for the racers.

The Folk ’N Bluegrass Festival is the smaller, more mellow festival hosted on Reservoir Hill in Pagosa Springs. (The larger, less mellow alternate is Four Corners Folk Festival.) Many festival-goers appreciate the beautiful campground. It’s located in a flat area on a hill above town, dotted with tall pines. Fifteen miles of mountain-bike trails traverse the forested hill. So bring your bike! You may also want to walk down the hill to soak in the hot springs. But you won’t want to miss Taarka playing their acoustic Americana and “gypsyjazz.” The lineup also includes Della Mae and Finnders & Youngberg. The festival will provide free firewood this year, if no fire bans are in effect, but prohibit festival-goers from bringing their own, to try to protect Reservoir Hill from pine beetles.

Since 2008, yogis from across the state have gathered in Telluride’s mountain-town haven for a celebration of the joys of meditation and balance. This year, the sixth annual Telluride Yoga Festival, promises to uphold its mission to create a space where people of all levels can practice yoga in a zero-waste, environmentally friendly environment. Numerous classes are taught each day of the festival, including a backbend workshop, a restorative stillness class, a class focused on teaching how to defy gravity in your practice and classes taught by Pamela Quinn (author of The Elemental Cleanse) that tap into the power of different energies. Telluride Yoga Festival begins on July 11 and will be held in various locations around town like the Telluride Elementary School, Telluride Yoga Center and Element 52.
