F

illing a calendar with all the great things to do in a Colorado summer is a pretty rewarding task. After all, how else would BW staffers get to find out about all the fantastic events, concerts and festivals going on this year?

And we’re not just talking about the things happening locally. In this calendar, we went out and found just about every interesting thing going on between Memorial Day and Labor Day in every nook and cranny of the Centennial State.

The wealth of opportunities for fun over the next few months borders on obscene. There are more music festivals in more beautiful places than you can image — from the Western Slope to Pogosa Springs to Greeley Boulder Weekly

to Steamboat. And that doesn’t count the hundreds of great concerts that will be happening this summer right here on the Front Range.

But music is just one tiny part of this year’s fun.

There are countless arts and crafts shows, automobile and aviation exhibits, museums and natural attractions.

So pack up that cooler, tell the neighbor to watch your dog, hire a kid with a lawn mower, tell your boss you’re sick and hit the road.

All we’re saying is that if you’re bored this summer, it’s definitely your own fault.

malls of Stapleton, as far west as up-and-over Lookout Mountain in Golden (I was ready for it!), eventually back to the flat east in steaming-hot afternoon sun. I questioned my decisions for days — weeks — and then I marked my calendar for this year (June 18).

Next in line was the 2015 Tour de Steamboat. Just the drive out to Steamboat was crazy gorgeous, and the shadow cast by our bikes on the roof, speeding along the hillside, was mesmerizing for this lucky passenger.

(Did I mention I have a live-in riding partner? He’s the best. He also does the driving.) The actual ride is equal parts torture and bliss. Climbing the double-summit of Rabbit Ears Pass: easy-peasy, thanks to those early mornings at Lookout. Fast-forward to mile 70-ish, and it’s a hellish pedal along disarmingly flat, straight road, with a crosswind strong enough to knock you sideways and make you think twice about reaching for a water bottle. Yeah I cried, so what? Every last mile was worth it, even those extra 5 miles that were not advertised in the literature. They hurt the best. Tour de Steamboat

I’m mixing it up a bit this summer, hopefully adding notches to my “at-least-I-didn’t-die” belt. Because simply not dying on some rides can feel like a giant win.

The first weekend of June is the Elephant Rock Century — but I might just choose a shorter route if I’m still angry at my saddle and its awful place in the world. TRAIL RIDGE ROAD There are few drives in the U.S. or the world that can match the stunning mountain scenery of Trail Ridge Road as it climbs to 12,000 feet. You can bike it if you don’t mind dodging cars and motorhomes, or hike it before the road opens on Memorial Day. Do get out of your car and explore the trails that overlook Forest Canyon or hike on the east or west sections of the Ute Trail.

You can hike up 3,000 feet on the east section from Beaver Meadows if you don’t want to drive, and enjoy the rock formation of Tombstone Ridge on the way to 12,000 feet.

SUMMITS If you want a scenic but easy summit, hike up 1,000 feet to the top of Deer Mountain, a few miles from the Beaver Meadows entrance and enjoy spectacular views of Longs Peak to the south and the Mummy Mountains to the west and north. Turn around whenever you wish for an easier trek with children. If you want a mountaineering experience, try to summit the very popular Flattop Mountain (12,324 feet). Prepare for all kinds of weather and take enough food and water for a full day to climb 2,834 feet over the 9-mile round trip route from the Bear Lake trailhead. You can also continue on for a total of almost 18 miles and end up in Grand Lake, after crossing the Continental Divide.

Arrive very early or take the shuttle for parking.

GRAND LAKE If you drive over Trail Ridge Road you will end up on the Grand Lake side of the park. You can enjoy the relatively small stream that is the beginning of the mighty Colorado River with an easy family stroll on the Coyote Trail. The East Inlet Trail is a great route for more extensive outings of any length. You can take a short family stroll to Adams Falls, and then enjoy the scenic East Meadow that is another half mile beyond. You might have to share the dazzling riparian view with moose or elk. If you have more vitamins in your legs, you can continue on to a series of pristine lakes, starting with Lone Pine and ending with the Fifth Lake on high.

There are many other adventures on both sides of magnificent and magical Rocky Mountain National Park. The rangers at the visitor centers can regale you with the infinite possibilities. But whatever you do, take your time, breath deeply, look and listen.

The unlikely biking Mecca of Colorado’s Commerce City

T

he smokestacks and the smell. The junkyards and rundown bungalows. The fast food joints and liquor stores. You’ve probably caught glimpses of these things as you’ve sped by on Highway 270, safe in the cocoon of your Subaru.

You’ve seen the ugliness, the industrial yards and the truck stops. It’s not a place you’d ever stop. Ever.

But why not? That’s what makes Commerce City so interesting: It is home to haunting monuments of America’s industrial past and also more diverse than most think, with more than 700 acres of parks and more than 25 miles of trails, many of which link to larger systems like the Sand Creek Regional Greenway. But as compelling as the greener parts of Commerce City are, it’s the industrial underside of Commerce City — a no man’s land of refineries, gaping pits and feral junkyard dogs — that makes cycling here a 180-degree departure from the bubble that is Boulder. And with easy access, no crowds and plenty of urban decay (in an attractive Mad Max kind of way), it’s well worth an adventure, particularly if your idea of adventure includes mountain biking where urban meets industrial meets the prairie.

Grab your bike and head to Commerce City.

A loose collection of former farming and industrial towns, with names such as Derby, Dupont, Irondale and Rose Hill, Commerce City was incorporated in 1952 and achieved home rule almost 20 years later. The place has lived up to its moniker with a pro-business bent and industrial zoning that has attracted major companies. Take, for example, Boulder Weekly

ConocoPhillips, which was the original owner and operator of the most visible manifestation of the area’s industrial bent (the refinery just west of 270) before selling the facility to SunCore Energy in 2003.

It’s the refinery, of course, that gives most people their primary impression of Commerce City’s industrial charms. But when seen in the right light from the bike path that runs along Sand Creek, it’s strangely beautiful, a mysterious collection of pipes, towers and tanks that gleam in the early morning sun. Past the refinery, slivers of green along the creek hold secrets of their own: foxes, egrets and other birds nestle undisturbed in the undergrowth.

The multi-use trails that take you past the refinery also lead to other, hidden gems.

It’s possible to access humble neighborhoods on the edge of the prairie, small bungalows on dirt roads, with American flags in the windows and pickup trucks in the driveways. Remnants of an agrarian past, they’re not too far removed from the small towns that dot Colorado’s eastern plains. And with the protected landscape of the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge (home to more than 250 species of birds and a colony of endangered black-footed ferrets) to the east, it’s possible to catch glimpses of the great emptiness of the plains stretching into infinity past the backyards of these humble abodes.

nects to the South Platte Trail, allowing easy access to the heart of Denver as well as a maze of other attractions — quiet back roads, nicely banked concrete walls and funky double track provide the perfect ingredients for urban mountain biking adventures.

Jumbled piles of debris test agility and balance and, for the most part, have never been ridden before. It seems that nobody has attempted to ride a bike to the top of that pile of dirt and asphalt slabs that bakes in the sun next to Sand Creek. Why not be the first?

That’s reason enough to go to Commerce City.

No one is going to care about where you ride your bike or how you are riding it in Commerce City. And there’s nothing fake or plastic about the landscapes here. Rough and tumble, it’s a part of Colorado’s Front Range that most people frequent only if

they have to. While hipsters on the West End of Pearl hit the latest organic dining experience, you can be cruising through a part of Colorado that’s unique and has its own hardened beauty, with no crowds, no attitudes and a surprisingly good trail system.

With stark industrial landscapes, winding bike paths and neighborhoods that hint at simple, honest living, Commerce City is a premier urban adventure destination, a funky

place that feels about a million miles away from the spandex-clad masses in the Pearl Street Whole Foods parking lot. A good thing that thankfully won’t be changing anytime soon.

ou’ve heard of the usual places. You know, the ones that make it into the top 10 lists in magazines, places like Strawberry Park Hot Springs and Conundrum. Places that are great, but also a wee bit crowded. Places that are known, places where you’ll see people. Places that, yes, are on top 10 lists.

Well, forget those places for a minute. Forget the magazines and their lists because we have something better for you. A humble list from a humble newspaper that knows you don’t want crowds, you don’t need amenities and you don’t care about trends. Because what you want is hot water and a soak in solitude. Here’s the Hot List of Hot Springs from Boulder Weekly.

RAINBOW HOT SPRINGS, PAGOSA SPRINGS, CO Perched at 9,000 feet high in the Weminuche Wilderness outside of Pagosa Springs (which, incidentally is home to commercial hot springs pools), Rainbow Hot Springs is a 5-mile hike in but well worth it. With temperatures hovering around 100 F and plenty of hot water bubbling out of the earth,

You might be tempted to go au naturel here, but the proximity to the road means that you’re better off bringing your swimsuit. With volunteer pools strategically placed to allow for the mixing of the icy waters of the Crystal River and the steaming flow of the Penny Springs, its easy to find the right spot with the right temperature for you. Find these springs on the east side of Colorado 113, .2 miles south of mile marker 57.

But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t gas up a jalopy, load up some friends and their friends too and take a road trip down New Mexico way. Both springs are located north of Jemez Springs, a peaceful small town tucked into the folds of the Jemez Mountains, approximately three hours south of Durango. In town there are some restaurants, galleries and spa hotels (with associated commercial hot springs), along with the Bodi Manda Zen Center, a Buddhist retreat.

For those on a budget there is ample camping in the mountains and the hiking and biking is also excellent.

Nederland has options aplenty for outdoor fun

T

he small town of Nederland (8,228 feet, population 1,445) is known not only for the Frozen Dead Guy, but also for being the gateway to a variety of great places for outdoor recreation — hiking, mountain and road biking, picnicking or fishing.

When you crest the hill next to Barker Meadows Reservoir you will see the backdrop of the spectacular Indian Peaks. There are several access points not far from Nederland where you can enjoy the high foothills and mountains. There is also a nice trail along the north shoreline of the sparkling reservoir, close to downtown and not far from the local brewpubs, coffee shops and other restaurant options. The reservoir is stocked and is a popular place for fishing.

Go south from Ned and take the Eldora Ski Area turnoff to go to the Hessie Trailhead, about a mile west of the little village of Eldora. It is the access point for several lake hikes of varying length: Lost, Woodland, Skyscraper, King, Betty, Bob, Diamond, Devil’s Thumb, Jasper and Storm lakes. You can also fish Middle Boulder Creek on the way. If you choose to drive past Hessie, on the very rough 4th of July road, you can start at the 4th of July campground trailhead. You must arrive early on weekends to get a parking spot as it is the primary access for climbing the twin peaks of South and North Arapaho, both of which are over 13,500 feet. You can also access Diamond Lake, or hike up to scenic Arapaho Pass if you aren’t a peak bagger.

If you don’t feel like driving to Nederland, there is excellent bus service 12 hours per day, seven days per week from the Boulder-Denver area. You can also connect with the weekend hikers shuttle to the very popular Hessie Trailhead at the Park-n-Ride. This will save you the hassle of trying park, as most of the spots are usually gone by 7:30 or 8 a.m. on summer weekends. The shuttle runs every 15 minutes.

The next closest recreation areas are Mud Lake and Caribou Ranch Boulder County Open Space, 2 miles north of town. Mud Lake is great for families with small children and features a nice picnic area and

two short, hilly 1 mile trails. Caribou Ranch is closed from April to July to protect migratory birds and calving elk, but has a historic homestead and mine, and longer trails around a pretty meadow and aspen groves.

A couple of miles south of Nederland is the West Magnolia Road area that is a mountain-biker paradise. There is a spaghetti network of trails for bikers of all abilities. Beginners and families can enjoy the lightly used forest campground roads, especially the 355, A through E series. The less challenging mountain biking trails are west of the Peak to Peak highway at several trailheads throughout the

campground area. The more challenging, advanced mountain biker trails are east of the Peak to Peak and are called the Dot trails. Road bikers frequently bike on the Peak to Peak highway if they are very fit.

Going south from Ned on the Peak to Peak is much easier than traveling steeply uphill to the north. An easy 10-mile round trip ride is out to the village of Eldora and back. Adding on the climb to the Eldora Ski Area will get your heart pumping. The trails can also be hiked at West Magnolia.

Five miles south of Ned is Rollinsville, the historical railroad gateway to the East Portal/Moffat Tunnel Trailhead, where there are more All photos courtesy scenic lake trails, 5 miles down the gravel of Alan Apt road. The challenging Heart Lake route, the easy Crater Lake option, and the moderate Forest Lakes trails in the James Peak Wilderness Area. Mountain bikers can enjoy the former railroad route, Rollins Pass, or the Mammoth Gulch route. Rollins Pass goes all the way over the Continental Divide to Winter Park, if you really want to challenge yourself.

Park. Try the Coyote and Mule Deer Trails for great wildflowers. The short Raccoon Trail starts with a dramatic view of the Continental Divide. There is a $7 per car admission fee.

Seven miles northwest of Nederland is the Rainbow Lakes Trailhead, and access to the south end of the Sourdough Trail. You can hike or bike out and back to Brainard Lake on the Sourdough. Or you can bike Rainbow Lakes Road to the campground or drive there to enjoy the Rainbow Lakes or Glacier View trails.

Sixteen miles north of Ned is the spectacular but very busy Brainard Lake Recreation Area. It is the primary access for the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area. There is a $10 per car fee unless you park in the lot east of the entry gate and hike in. You can hike up to Left Hand Reservoir for free, and enjoy the spectacular setting. The enjoyable, rolling Sourdough Trail is next to the first parking lot, and goes north and south. Mountain bikers savor these routes too.

The parking lots near the other lakes and peaks also fill up early on weekends.

You can drive 5 miles to the closer lots and hike to Mitchell and Blue Lakes, or Long and Isabelle Lakes. You can also get much closer to the trailhead for 13,000 foot Mount Audubon, and the other soaring Indian Peaks.

Another 5 miles north will take you to the turnoffs for Beaver Reservoir and the Peaceful Valley-Camp Dick areas with many additional trail options, including Buchanan Pass.

Even the Wild Basin section of Rocky Mountain National Park is a reasonable commute north from Nederland just north of Allenspark.

No visit to Nederland would be complete without a visit to the renowned Carousel of Happiness. It is fun for children of all ages, and only cost $1 per ride.

A

ccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, Colorado saw a population increase of 101,000 from July 1, 2014 to July 1, 2015. They come from all over for a variety of reasons, but let’s be honest, they are here because the weather is spectacular and the beer is delicious. And with another summer upon us, they demand entertainment. They want to be outside, they want to enjoy an adult beverage or two and they want to watch a movie. Thankfully, the Centennial State has them covered.

Here are a few of Colorado’s cinematic options.

No self-respecting Coloradoan will want to miss these. For all of you transplants out there, these are the places to go if you want to start building that “native” cred, so throw on some fleece — it can get mighty chilly when the sun goes down — grab a choice microbrew and catch a classic under the stars.

Outdoor Cinemas

Thanks to inflatable movie screens and portable projectors, outdoor cinemas are just about everywhere these days. Just make sure to double check the website as to what you can and cannot bring to the show.

The crème de la crème of outdoor moviegoing belongs to the Denver Film Society, and they know how to put on one hell of a show. This year, Film on the Rocks is screening nine movies at Red Rocks, and the offerings run the gamut from cult classics to blockbuster

1750 13th St., Boulder boulderoutdoorcinema. com Boulder’s Outdoor Cinema has been a summer staple since 1995. Featuring weekly movies with a focus on pop contemporary classics with pre-show activities, music and plenty of food. Check the website regularly for updates to movie showings.

June 11: ET: The Extra Terrestrial July 17: The Big Lebowski entertainment, including arguably the greatest film of all time, Citizen Kane.

Both Citizen Kane and Red Rocks are celebrating their 75th anniversary this year — Citizen Kane debuted on May 1, 1941 and Red Rocks Amphitheater officially opened on June 15 — and if you’ve never seen this pillar of cinema, or have yet to experience a movie under the Colorado stars, start here. Kane will screen on 35mm — that in itself is cause for travel — various heads of state will deliver a keynote address and the Colorado Symphony Orchestra will perform beforehand. That’s a whole lot of Coloradoness packed into one fantastic evening.

A word to wise: if you have yet to accept Colorado’s embrace of marijuana as a form of recreation, or just plain hate the smell, Red Rocks might not be your cup of tea — particularly the Memorial Day screening of The Big Lebowski. Considered yourself warned.

Just because you want to see a movie under the stars doesn’t mean that you have to sit outside. Why not load the whole gang into the station wagon and catch a double feature at the local drive-in?

Chautauqua Silent Film Series Chautauqua Auditorium June–August 900 Baseline Road, Boulder chautauqua.com/events/film Not all of Colorado’s summer cinematic offerings are al fresco. Chautauqua’s Silent Film Series is held in their gigantic wooden auditorium. However, Chautauqua is a historic landmark — the only Chautauqua west of the Mississippi River that is still in continuing unbroken operation since the Chautauqua heyday of the 1920s — and it’s the perfect venue to dive into cinema’s past, namely, silent movies.

Live musical accompaniment is a key component to silent film, and Mont Alto will be on hand for three of the shows, the Silent Film Trio will lend at hand with The Big Parade and ace silent film pianist Hank Troy will tickle the ivories for five of them.
