How quaint. Today, the riches are massive, but the embarrassment gene seems to have been completely bred out of corporate chieftains. They have no shame at producing negative results and offing thousands of underlings, then wheeling in a front-end loader to haul their own pay to the bank. The head man at Estée Lauder, for example, recently cut 2,000 employees but grabbed a huge salary increase and new stock payments worth more than $24 million.

Are there no adults to supervise these corporate playgrounds and teach such concepts as humility and sharing? Well, technically, the board of directors is supposed to provide corporate governance, including the setting of Boulder Weekly

economic mobility for 98 percent of Americans, or will we truly lay the foundation for “shared sacrifice” and fair opportunity in this age of recession?

members even questioned the casino games the banks were running, and fewer yet objected to giving reckless bankers billions of dollars in unwarranted bonuses.

Now after the collapse, what has changed? Nothing. One survey of nine of the big banks we taxpayers bailed out shows that two-thirds of their failed board members are still there, and, once again, they’re shoveling inexplicably huge bonuses at the same old CEOs. A system that enriches executive elites while crushing the middle class is worse than an embarrassment — it’s morally untenable.

Another home run for Harmon Killebrew.”

If you know anything about the career of Minnesota Twins Hall of Famer Harmon Killebrew, you would probably guess that those were the words of Ray Scott, Herb Carneal or Halsey Hall, the broadcast team that brought Twins games to life on WCCO radio during Harmon the 1960s.

Killebrew But, no, those were the words of an imaginative and athletic 8-year-old boy whose family happened to live in St. Louis Park, Minn., a suburb of Minneapolis, in 1961 when the Washington Senators relocated to the Twin Cities and became the Minnesota Twins. Something of a loner, this aspiring young ballplayer spent countless hours in a ballpark that doubled as a front yard, throwing a rubber ball against the gray concrete stairs, fielding the ground balls, catching the pop-ups and throwing out the runners as he played out entire Twins games, pitch by pitch, inning by inning.

All of this was done while meticulously and accurately announcing each Twins player as he came to the plate, as well as the players of the team that the Twins happened to be playing that day.

When the greatest Twins player, Harmon Killebrew, came to the plate, our 8-year-old announcer understood the need to amplify the volume and enthusiasm that accompanied his hero’s arrival at the bat. And when our 8-year-old pitcher delivered the first pitch to Killebrew, he understood the need to rear back and fire the ball in such a way as to ensure the feared slugger would “hit” the ball as high and as far as any one of the 573 home runs his 6 May 19, 2011

worthy hero would ultimately hit during his storied 22-year career, spanning three decades.

Just four days after announcing that he had decided to cease treatment and end his courageous battle with esophageal cancer, Harmon Killebrew died on May 17, 2011, at his home in Scottsdale, Ariz., at the age of 74.

While he will always be remembered for a Hall of Fame career that featured his powerful tape-measure home runs, Killebrew’s true legacy is that of a professional athlete who never allowed the fame and adoration with which he was gifted to cause him to forget his humble beginnings or to alter his commitment to conducting himself by the highest set of principles.

Harmon Clayton Killebrew was born June 29, 1936, in Payette, Idaho, a small town of some 3,000 residents. In 1954, at the age of 17, he was signed by the thenWashington Senators to a “bonus contract” that paid him $10,000 per year (about $80,000 today, adjusted for inflation). During his career he hit 573 home runs, which at the time of his retirement in 1975 was second only to Babe Ruth in the American League, and the most among right-handed hitters. Killebrew accomplished the feat of hitting 40 or more home runs in a season eight times, a record he shares to this day with Babe Ruth. He was named the American League’s Most Valuable Player in 1969 after hitting 49 home runs and knocking in 140 runs.

Killebrew led the American League in home runs six times, was named to the All-Star team 11 times and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1984.

But despite the strength and power that he displayed at the plate, Killebrew exemplified a humble and gentle demeanor that has been all but lost in a modern era of baseball that is rife with ill-behaved, overpaid, egomaniacal athsee HERO Page 7

The U.S. currently uses about 3.3 billion barrels of gasoline a year, or 9 million barrels a day. Producing all of it from coal would require about 40 plants each with a 250,000-barrel-a-day output.

Shell Oil is currently starting up a 250,000-barrel-a-day plant in Qatar that turns natural gas into fuels and other refined petroleum products. The same technology can be used to make gasoline from coal.

The Qatar plant will cost Shell a staggering $19 billion to build, more than four times the amount the company initially estimated it would cost. But according to the trade publication Petroleum Economist, at the present price of oil the Qatar plant will pay for itself in “just over two years,” or in not much more than four years if the price of oil were to collapse to $50 a barrel. Judging from the experience of another gas-to-fuels plant operating in Qatar (one owned by the South African company Sasol that uses older technology), once the plant is paid for the cost of producing a barrel of fuel will be around $25.

A few weeks ago I suggested it would make sense for national security reasons for the federal government to pay for the construction of a fleet of synthetic fuel plants.

But given the rates of return this

technology is capable of delivering, it shouldn’t be difficult for the government to incentivize its introduction with tax credits and loan guarantees, instead of paying for plants directly.

Of course that would require giving subsidies to energy companies instead of cutting them, as the Obama administration and Congress are currently doing.

And it would require the Obama administration to find ways of enabling domestic oil, gas and coal production instead of finding ways to stop it — which it has consistently done since it took office.

Eliminating oil company tax breaks is a great way for Congressmen to showboat, but as a national energy policy it’s like saying, “The beatings will continue until morale improves.” Don’t count on it bringing down the price of gasoline.

The United States is currently fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq (and in several secret wars) because latter-day jihadists have been kept afloat by a river of petro-dollars. The only way of drying up that river is to drive down the price of oil and keep it down by ensuring there is always a surplus of oil on the world market (which is what we actually mean when we talk about “energy independence.”)

And the way to do that is to make our own.

But Harmon Killebrew was the kind of heroic role model that every 8-year-old boy needs and deserves, and when compared to other stand-out ballplayers of any era he rises to the top more assuredly than the 520-foot, upper-deck shot he hit at Metropolitan Stadium on June 3, 1967, a shot that is memorialized at Minneapolis’ Mall of America, where the seat the ball hit still hangs.

The passing of Harmon Killebrew is not just a sad day for Twins fans, not just a sad day for baseball, not just a sad day for professional sports, but a sad day for our entire culture. Killebrew was a brand of sports hero that has come and gone from a time gone by. And not just a different time, but a better time.

It was a time when professional athletes were more loyal to the team they played for and to the fans of that team than they were to the almighty dollar; a time when an average family could afford to attend a professional sporting event any time they wanted to; a time when ball-

parks were named after the community or the team that played there and not the highest bidder for “naming rights”; a time when the crowd clapped along to familiar tunes played on an organ between innings, rather than being held captive by an offensive commercial message on the Jumbo Tron; a time when you could bring your own food and water into a professional sporting event and didn’t have to submit to being searched upon entry; a time when “The Star-Spangled Banner” was sung true to form and with reverence by a common community member, not as an improvisational performance intended to glorify a celebrity recording artist.

It was a time when a 17-year-old kid from a small town in Idaho was happy to play the sport he loved simply for the love of the sport.

And it was a time when, at the impressionable age of 8, I wore out the grass in front of the gray, concrete stairs of my boyhood house aspiring to be just like one of the greatest professional sports role models of all time — Harmon Killebrew.

Videos of factory farming Free press advocates have been outraged recently by bills in the Florida, Iowa and Minnesota legislatures to prohibit possession and display of videos of factory farming. Yet, for the meat, dairy and egg industries that push for these bills, the prohibition makes perfect sense.

A year ago, undercover investigators exposed E6 Cattle Co. in Castro County, Texas, chaining dairy calves

in tiny wood crates and bludgeoning their skulls with pickaxes.

Last June, Cal-Cruz Hatcheries in Santa Cruz, Calif., were found to grind up and suffocate live chicks.

In August, Iowa’s Hillandale Farms and Wright County Eggs were forced to recall 550 million eggs for Salmonella contamination.

If I was running one of those operations, I certainly wouldn’t want people with cameras anywhere near my facilities.

Filthy conditions and cruel practices are likely to remain legal and commonplace on U.S. factory farms, and their operators will continue to avoid public exposure.

Dog daze It’s curious, the amount of information and coverage we’ve seen seeing over the past week about that dog that was shot by an Erie cop, as opposed to the woman who says she was sexually assaulted by several men in a white sedan on The Hill on May 11.

You might wonder if this is misplaced police resources or a product of how much we love our dogs in Boulder County, but it’s probably more a question of available information. Boulder police have been pretty tight-lipped about the sexual assault, saying that the only identifying information on the suspects is that they are males. That really narrows it down.

The alleged gang rape occurred in the 900 block of University Avenue between midnight and 1 a.m. A police spokesperson told us this week that investigators want to talk to the woman again, but she has been unavailable.

Meanwhile, we’ve been getting all sorts of information on the dog-killing cop, from a past canine shooting incident to the fact that none other than the district attorney is going to look into the incident. And, of course, the grieving dog owner is eager to speak out about what she naturally sees as a travesty.

It’s the nature of the journalism business. We pretty much just write down what people say and share it with thousands of you, and if people aren’t talking, there isn’t much we can do, aside from digging through documents. And in sexual assaults, the alleged victim is usually given space, in addition to anonymity, in part so that the media coverage doesn’t have a chilling effect on the reporting of such incidents. (If you thought your name might end up in the paper, you might be hesitant to report that you were raped.)

So if you’re wondering why you’ve heard more about a dead dog than a woman who may have been gang-raped, just know that it’s more a case of limited information than misplaced priorities.

Now that’s a suspenseful ending.

We just can’t help but wonder how many other adulterous elected officials and movie stars are out there, quietly sweating. Surely some are better at keeping a secret than keeping their dick in their pants. But when you’re in the spotlight, it’s only a question of time before people start talking.

In addition to feeling bad for Maria and his legitimate kids, we feel for the lovechild, who now has to live with being the product of this union. His dad isn’t who he thought he was. Instead, he’s Conan, Mr. Universe, the governator. Arnold was going commando and generating some red heat with his mom. And then he totally failed to have recall for a decade. It was true, the lies. Maria got a raw deal from this predator.

OK, we’ll stop.

Fat fine It’s no secret that obesity has been associated with a host of medical problems.

So now the state of Arizona is considering charging fat people on Medicaid $50 a year. It’s kind of like increasing taxes on cigarettes, but different.

People who have children or who are overweight due to a medical condition would be exempted, but still. This is beginning to be a slippery slope.

And we are reminded of one of the messages in the film Food Inc. — that some of the cheapest, mass-produced foods are also some of the worst for you healthwise. Poor people can’t afford the organic department at the supermarket and opt instead for a burger off the Dollar Menu. So this Arizona plan could hit the pocketbooks of those who need that pinch the least.

The obesity problem is not going to be solved by a $50 fine, but by things like educating our kids about healthy eating, organized efforts to stop patronizing the likes of McDonald’s and rewarding healthy people with lower insurance rates.

Bike-sharing program launches in Boulder

A

new fleet of bicycles will take to Boulder’s streets on May 20 — shiny, red bikes equipped with baskets and bells — as part of a program designed to make it easier for residents and visitors to make quick trips by bicycle around town.

Boulder B-cycle, a bike-sharing program, allows would-be cyclists to purchase an annual ($50), weekly ($15), or 24-hour ($5) membership, then check out a bike for hourly use.

“With each of those memberships, each of those levels, every ride you take under an hour is free,” says Elizabeth Train, Boulder B-cycle’s director of community engagement. “You can ride all day, if you ride for an hour, dock it, take a new bike, and ride for an hour.”

It is designed to be convenient for running short errands around town connecting between transit stations.

The national B-cycle company provides the equipment and software, but the bike-share program will be run by a local nonprofit. Denver B-cycle’s program, which launched in April 2010, was supported by a donation from the Democratic National Convention.

“Every city that has launched a bike share program in the United States has started with a very large either federal grant, a grant like this one through the DNC, and sometimes in addition a huge amount of money from a presenting sponsor,” Train says. “In Boulder, we didn’t have that. We didn’t have a huge federal grant to start with, and we didn’t have a major corporation behind us, because we’re just a little bit too small to attract that kind of investment from a big corporation. So we had to do a huge community fundraising initiative in order to get our nut to start with.”

The city of Boulder lined up grants, local businesses sponsored baskets and stations (which bear the names of their sponsors), and individuals stepped in to provide funding. Twelve stations are ready, and Train says another six stations will open by the end of the summer.

“We’ve gotten a lot of folks who say, ‘Well, everyone in Boulder already has a bike,’ but these bikes are just so convenient and so secure,” Train says. “When Boulder Weekly

you’ve come to town and you don’t have your bike, you’ve driven your car or you’ve taken the bus, these are just a really great way to get around town for short trips to lunch, errands, that kind of thing. … You can park your car one time and then use a bike for all the short trips you need to take during the day.”

The B-cycle program could ease some of the hassle for commuters who travel between Denver and Boulder; the B-cycle programs in each city are expected to establish reciprocity between their systems by July 1. Boulder members will be able to walk right up to a Denver station and borrow a bike without buying another membership.

Beware, though — Boulder allows an hour of riding free, while Denver B-cycle gives just 30 minutes before charging per-hour rates.

B-cycle “street team” members will be riding around the city in the coming weeks, checking out and returning bikes, educating people about the system.

“We’re very excited to be a part of all of this because we support all access to downtown through our division, not just parking, so this helps provide another option for our downtown employees and customers,” says Donna Jobert, financial manager for Downtown and University Hill Parking Services, which is sponsoring a station at 15th and Pearl. “We’re the smallest city that has launched a bike share program, so it’s going to be very interesting to see how well it’s going to be supported in this community.”

Boulder also ranks with Portland, Ore., and Davis, Calif., as a top city for bicycling, according to the League of American Bicyclists — making it a big deal in the bicycle world, Jobert added.

“We are one of three platinum-level bicycle cities in the United States, so this is one of those things we should be doing as one of those platinum-level cities,” she says. “Not just to sit back on what we’ve achieved, but to be better and better.”

The B-cycle launch party is from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on May 19 at Design Within Reach. The launch ride starts assembling at 8 a.m. May 20.

ism education is as important as it ever was to try and make good, solid journalists stand out from all the cacophony of voices that are out there. I don’t understand the argument that journalism education is somehow not as necessary. I understand that we can’t teach the same way we used to many years ago, because the world has changed. But I think if we change with it, there is still plenty of room for good, solid journalism education.”

Heider says that despite early indications that it might be the end of the road for the J school, following the money may reveal a different intent in the regents’ action.

“University officials have described it as a transition step towards a new college of some sort that would be more broadbased,” Heider says. “And so I think if that’s the case, this could be a very good thing. Alumni will be watching this very carefully over the next year or two to make sure that the university president and the regents do just that.”

While the school is closing, its assets, including the budget and staff, are expected to be temporarily transferred to Graduate School in the provost’s office, which Heider says is a good sign.

“If, indeed, it was just going to be forevermore a joint program in arts and sciences, all the faculty would be in the College of Arts and Sciences, all the budget would be in arts and sciences.

They’ve decided not to do that,” Heider says. “So the fact that everything has been transferred to the Graduate School, from an administrative viewpoint, it’s a very interesting move, because what it tells people on the inside and the outside is they really are putting it on hold until they figure out what the next step is.”

Heider holds out hope.

“Change doesn’t come easily to places, and there seemed to be an impasse [at CU] among some of the faculty for many years. Sometimes it takes something extraordinary for change to occur,” Heider says. “This is extraordinary, and worrisome in many ways — but if it brings about something stronger and better for students, then it could ultimately could be a good thing.”

Summer Scene 2011 Spotlight

wo successful former faculty members of the University of Colorado’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC) are questioning the motives behind the recent effort to discontinue the school.

After months of faculty study and administrative recommendations, the Board of Regents voted this spring to turn the journalism school into a department and transition it into a new “Journalism Plus” program, in which students pursue a second major in addition to journalism.

SJMC alumni and former faculty members Don Heider and Lee Hood have been watching the process carefully.

Heider began teaching broadcast journalism at the SJMC in 1992, and a year later started working towards his Ph.D. in journalism, completing it in 1997. In 2008, Heider left his CU faculty job to become the founding dean of Loyola’s School of Communication. Lee Hood, who taught at the SJMC for more than 16 years, also left CU for Loyola.

Heider says he is at a loss for why the closing was even a possibility, much less a reality. While the official reasoning included problems within the school and the changing nature of journalism, Heider suspects that budget cuts and political reasons are to blame.

“I read the report from the [program discontinuance] committee, and I thought it was, honestly, patently absurd,” Heider says. “I felt like it wasn’t a fair assessment of what has been going on in the school in the last 25 years. It’s really disturbing, and it seems to be politically motivated from within the university and isn’t in the best interests of the students or alumni.”

Hood seems to agree with Heider — she says she felt that the idea of closing the school was a hasty move in the changing environment of journalism.

Simply adapting to the new environment might be a smarter move, she says, considering the importance journalism plays in both democracy and free speech.

“I firmly believe that there is a really important role for journalism communication in the new media atmosphere,” Hood says. “I really think that journal-

A NATIONAL initiative to reverse the Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United decision — which some say gave corporations a blank check to buy elections — is coming to Boulder.

A City Council member wants to place a referendum for the effort on the local ballot, and a former Green Party presidential candidate will be in Boulder and other Colorado cities this week to stump for the initiative.

In Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, the Supreme Court ruled on Jan. 21, 2010, that the First Amendment prohibits limits on corporate funding of political broadcasts in candidate elections. The decision struck down a provision of the 2002 McCain-Feingold Act that kept corporations from airing campaign broadcasts about a candidate within a certain number of days before an election. In a 5-4 ruling, the Supreme Court said that prohibiting the group Citizens United from broadcasting an anti-Hillary Clinton TV ad just before the 2008 primary was contrary to the First Amendment. The justification was, in part, that the First Amendment not only prohibits punishing citizens for political speech, but “associations of citizens,” like corporations.

The decision prompted an outcry from some who said it equated money with free speech and gave companies carte blanche to outspend the competition on ads for their favored candidates, skewing the democratic process even more toward the corporate elite. **** A national group called Move to Amend is mobilizing to reverse the decision, even if it requires amending the U.S. Constitution. And this week, City Council member Macon Cowles called on the city’s leaders to place a referendum supporting that initiative on the ballot.

“Many people in our town support the Move to Amend the U.S. Constitution as the most promising way to reign in corporate power and the effect of billions of dollars of corporate money every election cycle that is put into moving a corporate agenda in the Boulder Weekly

Congress and the states,” Cowles wrote in an email to council.

He told Boulder Weekly that the referendum will likely be scheduled for council discussion before the end of June.

His proposed resolution reads, “Resolved, the People of the City of Boulder, Colorado, call for reclaiming democracy from the corrupting effects of undue corporate and monetary influence by amending the United States Constitution to: 1. abolish corporate personhood and prohibit the granting of Constitutional rights to any entity other than a human being; and to 2. clarify that the expenditure of money is not Constitutionally protected free speech so that money spent to influence elections can be subject to reasonable regulation to promote equal protection under the law for all human citizens.” **** David Cobb, the Green Party’s 2004 candidate for president, is a primary spokesperson for Move to Amend and sits on the initiative’s seven-member executive committee. He will be speaking on “Creating Democracy and Challenging Corporate Rule” in several Colorado cities this week, including a Boulder appearance on Saturday, May 21, at 2 p.m. at the Boulder Unity Church, 2855 Folsom St. Cobb told Boulder Weekly that the Citizens United decision is “just the latest, most egregious example of a legal system that is not actually promoting justice, not actually promoting the ability of ‘we the people’ to govern ourselves.”

Cobb notes that the Declaration of Independence refers to “unalienable rights” afforded to individuals, and says rights such as freedom of speech cannot be transferred to corporations. A corporation is a creation of government, like

the state that issues its charter, Cobb says, and the idea that it should be treated the same way as those who created it is wrong.

Cobb advocates going beyond the court system and effecting change on cultural, political and economic fronts.

Besides, he says, the courts have been wrong before.

“This is the same court that once said laws preventing women from voting are OK,” he points out. “This is the same court that said Jim Crow segregation laws are OK. This is the same court that said laws saying Native American Indians were not human beings were OK. There any number of ways we can show that the courts have been profoundly wrong, and they are wrong again.

“We can’t let them, in this slavish devotion to corporate ideology, tell us we don’t have the right to protect the environment or the integrity of our elections,” he says. “If we frame it that way, we can capture the spirit and joyful resistance that prior movements have done. They can either get on the right side of history or be replaced.” **** Cobb applies a similar analogy to the increasingly centralized and corporate media. He refers to Boulder Weekly and other independent news sources as “the people’s media,” adding that it’s a shame the term “alternative” is applied to such outlets, because it means they are increasingly in the minority.

“You know how low we are sinking when you allow ever fewer wealthy people to control ever more of the media institutions — they get the power to shape culture,” Cobb says, adding that his movement relies on independent media. “We know that Fox News and big corporate dailies are, in fact, ever more propaganda arms for Wall Street.

So we need relations with genuine, independent media.”

He says a tangible example of the effect the Citizens United decision has already had on our elections is that the Chamber of Commerce spent a record amount on the last election and wasn’t required to disclose where that money came from, even though contributors could well have included foreign corpo-

rations. Cobb recommends OpenSecrets.org as a valuable resource for determining which industries are contributing money to candidates.

He even identifies an unlikely ally in the Move to Amend initiative: the Tea Party. Both groups are mad, for example, that the major banks nearly destroyed the country’s economy and have since been rewarded, Cobb says.

“We’re hopeful to reach across ideologies,” he explains, “and find common ground.” **** Cobb discusses the three possible ways Move to Amend can reverse the Citizens United decision, from convincing two-thirds of our congressional representatives to approve an amendment to the Constitution (it would then go to the states for ratification) to triggering a Constitutional Convention with support from two-thirds of the states.

Finally, he says, if subjected to enough cultural pressure, the Supreme Court could reverse itself, as it did in Brown v.

Board of Education to outlaw Jim Crow laws.

Move to Amend has collected more than 11,700 signatures online for a constitutional amendment that would: • Firmly establish that money is not speech, and that human beings, not corporations, are persons entitled to constitutional rights.

• Guarantee the right to vote and to participate — and to have our vote and participation count.

• Protect local communities, their economies and democracies against illegitimate “preemption” actions by global, national and state governments.

Cobb describes this as a watershed moment in the country’s history.

“This moment in time is a democracy crisis, so what we need is a democratic movement, much like what is happening across the Middle East, Latin America and Central America,” he says.

“We need to start taking ourselves seriously as ‘we the people,’ actually having the sovereign right, and dare I say sacred responsibility, for creating a just, compassionate society. If we start to think that way, we can change reality.”

Bruce Cockburn can’t sit still. The celebrated Canadian musician has spent the last 41 years tackling politics, injustice and the euphoric joys and exacerbating nature of humanness in songs laced with spiritual conviction, honest reflection and his signature biting commentary.

Cockburn’s 31st album, Small Source of Comfort, was released in March, and neither his reflective nature nor his work ethic show any signs of abating. He has been engaged in the disc’s supporting tour, backed by violinist/ vocalist Jenny Scheinman — who doubles as the opening act — and percussionist/drummer Gary Craig. There’s no bassist, Cockburn is using mostly acoustic guitars, and the drum set is not what one would envision — it’s a stripped-down, engaging sound.

type of album that would have comfortably adapted itself to such touring simplicity. Cockburn’s original vision for its sound involved plenty of distorted guitars and a loud, bombastic direction with some dissonance thrown into the mix. But circumstances did not allow his vision to come to fruition.

“I guess I could have forced the issue, but it didn’t seem like a good idea,” he says. “Basically, through that period of time, my girlfriend moved to New York, lived there for five years and then moved back to San Francisco, where she had been living before that. So I was spending a lot of time in Brooklyn. If I had been at my house, I could have cranked everything up and it probably would have been that kind of album, but [I] can’t really pursue that sort of stuff. loud and electric. I did that in the ’60s, but to develop a kind of approach to songwriting and using that sort of vibe requires some work, and it just wasn’t in the cards.”

Small Source of Comfort is more suited to botanic gardens, wine sipping and beautiful sunsets, but it works just like the other quiet moments in Cockburn’s surprisingly varied discography. Producer Colin Linden, a frequent pick for Cockburn, recorded at a studio in Nashville and at the Bathouse, a residential studio in Ontario, Canada, owned by popular Canadian band The Tragically Hip. While Cockburn’s house was minutes away from the Bathouse, everyone else boarded at the studio.

“It was very relaxed and nobody was going anywhere,” he says. “Nobody had to rush anywhere. You just sort of roll out of bed, get fed and then you’d start recording.”

There’s the gentle instrumental “Lois on the Autobahn,” titled after Cockburn’s late mother, and the driving rhythm of “The Iris of the World,” but perhaps the best song on Small Source of Comfort is “Call Me Rose, ” a composition that formulated in Cockburn’s head while he was sleeping.

“It was a little bit of work, but mostly it was unlike anything else in that I woke up and the whole song was there in my head.” Cockburn says. “That’s never quite happened in exactly that way before.”

The song asks what would be required to rehabilitate not just Richard Nixon’s image, but his soul.

When Cockburn sings the opening line, “My name was Richard Nixon, only now I’m a girl,” one cannot help smiling and listening to what comes next.

says with a laugh. “I don’t know. My theory is that it had to do with some deep psychological issues around power and me, but expressed through language that was provided by the Bush administration’s brief attempt a few years ago to rehabilitate the image of Richard Nixon. There’s some sort of association there, but I was not really clear on what it is.”

While “Call Me Rose” is a serious composition, irrespective of its opening line, the purposefully humorous “Called Me Back” is anything but. Its slightly comical, somewhat cacophonous, back-porch musical accompaniment fits perfectly. Simply put, Cockburn had a friend that never returned a phone call.

“It just was funny because it’s based on a real episode which has been repeated a thousand-fold by other people in my life,” he says. “You call somebody, try and get a hold of them, and they don’t call you back and they don’t call you back. You call them again and they don’t call you back, and eventually they do or there’s some communication, but in the end there’s usually a good reason why the response wasn’t there.

“It just seems like such a common thing and it’s annoying. It’s like, ‘I should write a song about that — this one particular time that it happened’ — and so I

did. It’s the kind of topic that’s not really worth a serious song at all anyway, but it’s just one of those little cartoons of life.”

Cockburn, who turns 66 on May 27 — the same day he performs at Boulder’s Chautauqua Auditorium — is as reflective on his long career as he is on explaining his newer songs, humorous or otherwise.

His wry sense of humor and gentle demeanor are present, but it’s his prevailing honesty that guides the way.

Perhaps it’s from so many years of honest, heartfelt artistic expression; maybe it’s having a daughter and two grandchildren he’s rarely able to see because of distance and his schedule; or maybe it’s simply a sense of life that comes with age and experience.

In the end, maybe it’s a combination of everything.

“It’s weird because sometimes it feels like I’ve been doing this a really long time, and other times it just feels like I’m barely getting started,” Cockburn says. “I guess that’s just the way it is for everybody who reaches a certain age. The shape of your life assumes a different perspective when you start approaching the end of it, even though the day after you’re born could be the end of it, but [you] don’t think about that until you have to. Of course once you start getting older you have to — your friends start dying or you’re having crises and you have to notice that.

“If I went back and tried to remember all the things that happened over those years — I don’t know if I’d like to do that, but there’d be [some] neat stuff in there. There’d be some things that were great from the point of view of creating songs out of the angst that they produced, but I’d rather live with the songs than the memories of some of the stuff that happened.”

Artists’ passion drives MahlerFest, and audiences still support it

wenty-four years ago, Robert Olson went for a walk at the Dillon Reservoir.

His wife was in a rehearsal at the Breckenridge Music Festival, so he took a book along.

It was a biography of the composer Gustav Mahler, and by the end of the day Olson had had a crazy idea that is still paying off for music lovers in Boulder and around the world: He would start an annual festival devoted to Mahler’s music.

The obstacles were obvious. Mahler’s music requires very large orchestras and often a chorus. It is extremely challenging to the players and the conductor, and it has a limited, if devoted, audience of its own. Nobody had ever attempted anything like it.

“I went back and picked up my wife and said, ‘Guess what I’m going to do?’” Olson recalls. “She just looked at me like, ‘You’re kidding!’”

He wasn’t. The first Colorado MahlerFest took place in Boulder the next year, with a budget of $431. In the 23 intervening years the event has gotten a bit more lavish — this year’s budget is about $65,000 — but the format has stayed the same. There is always a song recital or other chamber event, a symposium and a concluding concert featuring one of the symphonies (played more or less in order, 1 through 10, in recurring cycles).

The culmination of MahlerFest XXIV, according to its website, will be at Macky Auditorium on Saturday, May 21, and Sunday, May 22, with performances of the Fifth Symphony and the little-known Entr’acte from Die Drei Pintos, an opera by Karl Maria von Weber that Mahler completed and performed in 1888. While audiences have flocked to the Mahler Festival from around the country and the world, they were not the primary inspiration for the festival.

“It was obvious to me that good musicians will sometimes go to great lengths to be part of a really great musical experience,” Olson says. “Back then [1987], the only Mahler symphonies that orchestras other than full-time professional orchestras played were 1, 4 and sometimes 2. So people like myself and plenty of my friends, who I knew wanted to be part of a Mahler symphony experience, simply didn’t have the opportunity. So I thought, why not, and that was the inspiration.”

The first festival was so successful that a year later, when Olson needed a larger orchestra and a chorus, he had no trouble filling the roster.

“Much to my surprise, when I sent out the letter to the people who had played the first year, and any other musicians I knew, I had to turn down people!”

from the beginning. And why not, Olson asks.

“I always say ‘What’s there not to possibly love, for goodness sake?’ Look at his music. It’s either drop-dead gorgeous melodies, or it’s a march — I mean, who doesn’t love a march? Or it’s folk music.

Or it’s the kind of climactic music that was stolen by the movie music composers! What’s there not to love?”

As for the featured piece this weekend, Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, “the whole piece is a journey of joyous celebration,” Olson says. “It’s a piece that, like all of Mahler, is highly emotional. It starts off with a funeral march, and ends up not only with a love song to his wife, but a song of great joy and great happiness and great love. So it’s an emotional journey that Mahler takes that we can all relate to very intimately.”

The Fifth Symphony, composed in 1901-02, stands at a turning point among Mahler’s 10 symphonies. It marks a return to the more traditional, purely instrumental symphony, after three symphonies that called for voices. It is also at the beginning of a more complex style than the first four symphonies, characterized by a more extensive use of counterpoint. (Listen particularly to the final movement.)

Interestingly, for this festival the Fifth Symphony will be paired with an earlier, and much simpler piece in the Entr’acte for Weber’s Die Drei Pintos. The juxtaposition will make it easy for listeners to observe the stylistic difference between the simpler, more folk-like Entr’acte and the more complex, contrapuntal symphony.

But with Mahler, rather than being analytical, most listeners prefer to just sit back and relish what Olson calls the “emotional journey of joyous celebration.” Once you get it, he adds, “you’re hooked for life.”

The pleasures of being a professional innovator Warren Haynes keeps moving with ‘Man In Motion’

arren Haynes is hardly an unknown quantity. The last two decades he’s gotten around enough to take over for Verizon’s “Can you hear me now?” guy. Playing with the Allman Brothers, Gov’t Mule and the post-Jerry Garcia Dead, Haynes has established him- Stewart O’Shields self as one of the finest improvisational rock guitarists alive today. But his palette extends beyond jambased blues-rock, as he demonstrates with his new solo album, Man in Motion.

The soul-drenched effort is only Haynes’ second solo album, arriving 18 years after his 1993 debut, Tales of Ordinary Madness. It came a year before Gov’t Mule started and the reformed Allman Brothers released their first disc, 1994’s Where It All Begins, launching Haynes on a nearly non-stop touring regimen. That’s one reason for the long break between solo discs. Now that Gov’t Mule is taking a well-deserved break, there was finally some time in Haynes’ schedule.

“Gov’t Mule has made a lot of studio records since then, a lot of touring, and same thing with the Allman Brothers,” says Haynes at soundcheck for a show in New York City, which he has called home the last 20 years. “Solo records are more something I feel like doing every now and then. I’m much more content to be in a band. Having written a bunch of songs that seemed to work well together but aren’t Gov’t Mule songs and didn’t seem like Allman Brothers songs, it seemed like now was the right time.”

Fans of his other bands will find plenty to enjoy with Man In Motion. The seven-minute “Sick of My Shadow” works a thick, slinky groove with help from keyboardists Ivan Neville and Ian McLagan.

“Hattiesburg Hustle” embarks on a swampy blues amble, and “On a Real Lonely Night” emanates a supple blues funk long on both bluesy ache and funky swing.

But there are surprises as well, from the jazzy vibe of the title track and the gospeltinged ballad “Everyday Will Be Like a Holiday.” Indeed, the entire effort has a gospel/ soul flavor that sounds like it was brewed in Muscle Shoals, though Haynes explains the style’s actually a more wide-ranging touchstone that goes back to his youth.

“All the great soul music, whether it came from Memphis, Muscle Shoals, Motown, whatever the case may be, I was influenced by all of it. Gospel music precedes that music. All that music was born out of black gospel music, and the first sound that ever made the hair on my arms stand up, when I was only 5 or 6 years old, was black gospel on the radio on Sunday in North Carolina, where I grew up,” he says.

The album came together relatively quickly, and was finished in six days. Haynes says he was looking for a fresh, live-in-the-studio feel that has the same loose, unpremeditated feel of his bands’ performances. He made a dream-team list and was able to get everyone he wanted — the Meters’ bassist George Porter, Jr., New Orleans session drummer Ray Weber, sax player Ron Holloway and Neville.

McLagan joined a week before recording began, at Austin producer Gordie Johnson’s suggestion, helping them mine for a twin keyboardist sound like that of The Band’s Richard Manuel and Garth Hudson, according to Haynes. He credits much of the album’s old fashioned, back-in-time feel to Johnson’s production.

“The most important thing was to make a record that didn’t sound like it had a date stamped on it. This record — in large part thanks to Gordie Johnson — sounds like it could’ve been recorded anytime over the last 40 years, and I love that,” Haynes says.

The turning point in his career took place when he was only 19, when country star David Allan Coe tabbed him to be his band’s lead guitarist. Coe was at a high water mark in his career, and Haynes played on three albums. Not only was it a “baptism by fire,” as he describes it, but it afforded him an opportunity to meet a lot of other musicians, including Gregg Allman and Dickie Betts, who several years later would ask him to help restart the Allman Brothers. Along the way he’s learned a thing or two about playing guitar.

“The longer you play, especially in the live setting, [the more you learn] how to listen to all the other musicians on stage or in the studio when you’re improvising, and how to become part of this tapestry,” he says. “It’s very important to leave plenty of space for the rest of the music and to allow all the other instruments to complete your sentences. And that’s something you get better with the more you do it.”

The ever-evolving nature of the songs and stage performances helps keep it vibrant and rewarding, something he thanks the fans for.

“If musicians have a complaint it would be that they get trapped doing the same sort of thing too much,” he says. “Thankfully we have an amazing audience that encourages us and inspires us to take it wherever we want to go from a musical standpoint, and that’s something that not a lot of people can say.”

Denver-born comedian T.J. Miller returns for comedy special

t was just a few years ago that comedian and actor T.J. Miller was pounding the pavement seven days a week doing standup routines at Chicago comedy clubs and touring with comedy troupes. He was paying his dues, as most entertainers do at some point in their lives, when he got a call for an audition.

“I went and auditioned for this teen comedy by this director I never heard of, so it wasn’t such a big deal,” Miller says. “But then they wouldn’t tell us what the movie was about and it ended up being [the J.J. Abrams-produced film] Cloverfield.”

Miller played the character Hud; the wisecracking 20-something that held the camcorder for most of the movie. Although you barely saw his face during the film, Miller’s quips and one-liners during the movie became quotables for fans. The film was a success at the box office and became a cult favorite among sci-fi fans.

At the same time, he had a starring role on the 200708 ABC sitcom Carpoolers as the goofy, Napoleon Dynamite-ish son Marmaduke.

“From then it just started, kept booking movies and doing TV here and there,” he says. “In 2010 I did, like, eight studio films or something. I did more movies in 2010 than anybody else.”

Miller grew up in central Denver and attended East High School, where he was drawn to the drama and acting programs. He loved performing the comedic parts of the plays but really didn’t see it as a career path.

It wasn’t until he went to college at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., to study psychology that he realized that he could go into a performancedriven career.

“I got into the drama program at GWU, and it was great,” he says. “Everybody was funny, and none of them were actors. So that was the first time I was like, ‘Oh you can be a comedian and not be just an actor.’ So I

did comedy through college, and then I went to Chicago and was there for four years. I studied, toured and worked for Second City, and I would do stand-up seven nights a week, sometimes twice a night, nonstop for four years. I never took a night off.”

With the TV show Carpoolers and the film Cloverfield, Miller was able to get a foothold in Hollywood and scored a role in the Jeremy Piven-led film The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard, a prominent sidekick role in She’s Out of My League, and the voice behind Tuffnut in the animated film How To Train Your Dragon. He was also in Unstoppable with Denzel Washington, Gulliver’s Travels with Jack Black and Get Him to the Greek with Russell Brand, and he played Ranger Jones in the recent Yogi Bear film.

Now Miller is heading back to his roots. In between doing voiceover work for How to Train Your Dragon 2, a new film called Our Idiot Brother with Paul Rudd, plus a 40-track comedy, pop, hip-hop album called The Extended Play EP, Miller will be filming a Comedy Central standup special on Saturday, May 21, at the Boulder Theater. “Stand-up is just a different medium of comedy than a film act or a television act,” Miller says. “Stand-up comedy is the most autonomous of the art forms, so that can be rewarding, but it’s also very challenging. There’s no one to blame but yourself if it isn’t going very well.”

It was important for Miller to come home to the Mile High City to film the special.

“This is my first one-hour special, and I wanted to do it in Denver. We couldn’t make any theaters in Denver work for where I am in my career, and what I wanted to do with my special,” he says. “Then we looked at the Boulder Theater to produce the special, and it was the perfect place. Boulder and Denver are the coolest cities in Colorado. And Boulder has such a different aesthetic. It’s almost a cross between a granola and California feel, and I’ve become more of a West Coast type of comedian since moving to Los Angeles. It’s a laid-back lifestyle and pretty open about drug use and drinking but has an intellectual edge to it.

I’m better with smarter audiences that are open to absurdity and silliness, and I found Denver being one of the best audiences I’ve ever played for.”

But sometimes it doesn’t go very well. Miller says that he probably gets more hecklers at his shows than any other comedian.

“I improvise a lot on stage. I ask the audience questions, and I guess I have the type of personality where it feels like it’s OK to yell things at me,” he says. “Drunks yell stuff at me. Fans yell stuff from the movies. That’s what people do at my shows. I rarely do a show where someone isn’t disruptive.”

But he’s always prepared to deal with the rudeness.

“I’m not particularly mean unless they won’t be quiet or they’re mean,” Miller says. “Sometimes people can be mean because they’re mean people in the world. So if they’re mean, I will verbally ruin their lives!”

eam Evergreen’s Triple Bypass is a 120-mile road bike ride that defines “epic.”

It’s more than 10,000 feet of elevation gain over three of Colorado’s highest paved passes: Squaw (11,140 feet), Loveland (11,990 feet) and Vail (10,560 feet). There’s even the bonus elevation of Swan Mountain Road. While not an official pass, Swan Mountain still climbs to 9,388 feet. The strange thing about this veritable lung-busting tour is how quickly

the event fills up. The July 9 running of the classic westward route from Evergreen to Avon is already filled to capacity, with a whopping 3,500 entries. That’s roughly 7,000 individual lungs (we assume) burning in the thin air, cruising for glory and bragging rights.

The Triple Bypass rides will happen July 9-10, starting in Evergreen on July 9 (West Route) and Avon July 10 (East and Double Triple routes). Cost is $150 per rider for the remaining open slots on the West-East Triple Bypass. (Normal costs are $150 for both the East and West rides and $275 for the Double Triple). All riders will receive a jersey for their participation. Ride is fully supported with mechanics, aid stations, support vehicles and a Colorado-style post-race barbeque. Team Evergreen is a nonprofit that donates all funds beyond ride costs to local charities — more than $600,000 in total and more than $125,000 in 2010 alone.

New options for 2011 An experimental new ride for this year is the Double Triple Bypass. The Double Triple takes two days to ride the entire course as a huge, 240-mile, out-and-back ride that equates to more than 20,000 feet of climbing in less than 48 hours. Being in Colorado, where our cyclists are cut from a different swath of lycra, of course there was a rabid waitlist, and the event filled to capacity at 500 riders. Registration for the Double Triple is now closed.

The second new ride, which as of press time still has a few precious openings, is the East Triple Bypass, which simply takes the course from Avon to Evergreen and runs on Sunday, July 10. It’s the same terrain as the classic, but backwards, so you’re going to get all the same heart-pumping thrills as you cruise into the morning sunrise. With a total rider capacity of 2,500, the inaugural eastbound route is sure to gain in popularity once cyclists are aware they have yet another outlet to spend more time in the saddle.

As Team Evergreen expands its marquee event to accommodate more than 6,000 riders, it’s safe to say the Triple Bypass has become one of Colorado’s flagship cycling events. A history of burly rides The 23-year history of the Triple Bypass begins in 1988, when a small group of 300 cyclists started what was then called the Rocky Mountain Century. As the event evolved, it adopted its clever moniker and became a yearly tradition in the high peaks.

And being a mountain ride, there have been years when rain, sleet and even snow has been part of the ambiance.

Of course, there are also crystal-clear, bluebell days when nary a cloud casts a shadow on the entire route. The unpredictability is part of the fun!

Because the event is not officially timed, there are no concrete results, but cyclists can expect to spend anywhere between eight and 12 hours on the bike. It is highly encouraged to spend time cranking out miles at altitude before the day of the race (the 7,900foot climb up Mount Evans is a noted training ride). If you are riding from Boulder, a trip up Left Hand Canyon to Ward then down to Lyons — and repeat — is close to mimicking the elevation gain and distance. And if you have friends coming to do the ride from out of town, let them know that losing a few dozen brains cells from the lack of oxygen are acceptable losses for flatlanders.

here are many outdoor activities that require education and certification. Scuba divers, for example, must train indoors under an instructor’s supervision before hitting the open water. Or to legally drive a motorcycle, riders must pass a driving test and receive a special license.

But there aren’t any requirements regarding hiking, camping or heading into the deep wild for sport. Campers don’t need a certification or even a license to pitch a tent and spend the night under the stars. At most, some campgrounds require a permit, which is more about paying admission than learning the basics.

merican Craft Beer Week has found a home in cities nationwide, but Boulder remains the hoppy heartland for those who want a little more sophistication with their brews.

The Boulder-based Brewers Association is a microbrewery trade group dedicated to promoting the relevance of craft beer as an industry and beverage. The organization is promoting the fifth annual American Craft Beer week, held May 16 to May 22.

On Friday, May 20, at 7 p.m., Avery will be tapping a keg of Dihos Dactylion, the brewery’s extremely rare, barrel-aged, sour ale. The etymology of the name is Greek, meaning “missing the tip of your finger.”

The beer is named after Fred Rizzo, a butcher-turned-brewer who lost the tip of his finger before joining the Avery Brewing Company.

Naming a brew in tribute to an employee marks the communal nature of craft breweries and the social culture that exists around this type of beer.

“Socially, what better way is there to kind of connect with friends than to go out to a local brewpub or craft brewery and eat over a good beer after work?” Howe says. “We try to foster that community feeling in our taproom here and also within the walls of our own brewery. We like to think of ourselves as a community that gets along really well. Our taproom is such a great place to socialize and connect with people.”

With its layers of flavor and narrative origins of development, craft beer instigates conversation and builds community in taprooms and restaurants.

Giving back to the local community is something Asher Brewing Company devotes itself to financially, donating 10 percent of proceeds to local charities and similar organizations.

have been dreaming of this week’s dessert for a couple of months now. Yes, some people dream of money and fame (I mean world peace). Me, I dream of chocolate, butter and nuts all mixed together to form the perfect treat.

Thank goodness I got a request from one of my fabulous Weekly readers for a coffee cake that would not only be delicious, but travel well and impress the masses. Hazelnut Chocolate Coffee Cake is what we are doing, and honey, fuggetaboutit (I’m a New Yorker in my dreams, FYI). This is so good, and like many other sweet concoctions, works for breakfast, a snack or just good ol’ dessert.

Apparently, my requester wanted a New York-style coffee cake for a bake sale. She mentioned that every year it’s always full of cupcakes. I guess if cupcakes are the popular kids, then my coffee cake will be the rebel, the cheerleader versus the stoner, if you will. I’m proud my recipe will be front and center at the bake sale, nestled between the little goody-two-shoes cakes.

Now, I must make it taste so good the other treats will pale in comparison.

Enter chocolate and hazelnut. That’s really all I need to say to make you run right out and purchase the ingredients.

It’s a match made in heaven (or Long Island). Combine that with a tender sour cream cake batter, and you have one award-winning treat. I’m actually doing something in between a crumb cake and a coffee cake. Not as much topping as a crumb cake, but a tad more than a coffee cake, with a little hit of topping running through the center of it. One little tweak would be I’m baking in a bundt pan instead of a rectangular pan. This is mainly for presentation — you want pretty slices on display when going up against those little fluffy cakes laden with colorful frosting and sprinkles (they’re so 2009).

The hazelnuts are toasted to bring out their best. The chocolate aspect is in the topping, and not the actual cake batter. It gives it just the right amount needed to kick up the coffee cake and make it something special.

Must wake up now. In my dreams the Mets just beat the Rockies. Wait, I am awake. Coffee cake for everyone!

Now follow the directions, put some

love into it, and invite me over when it’s done.

Hazelnut Chocolate Coffee Cake Crumb Topping 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup granulated sugar pinch of salt 1/2 tsp. cinnamon 1/2 cup unsalted butter (melted) 1 cup flour 2 tsp. cocoa powder 1/2 cup toasted hazelnuts (chopped) Center 1 tsp. cinnamon 1 tbsp. sugar 1 tsp. cocoa powder 1 tbsp. toasted hazelnuts (chopped)

Cake Batter 2-1/4 cups flour 1 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1/4 tsp. salt 3/4 cup unsalted butter (softened) 1-1/4 cups granulated sugar 2 eggs 1-1/4 cups sour cream 1 tsp. vanilla powdered sugar for dusting

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 10-inch Bundt pan (tube pan) with non-stick cooking spray. In small medium bowl, combine crumb topping ingredients. Mix well, set aside.

In small bowl, combine center ingredients. Set aside.

In another small bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Sift together and set aside.

In large bowl, cream butter and sugar. Add in eggs and mix well. Stir in sour cream and vanilla, mix until batter is well-combined. Pour a little less than half of batter into prepared pan.

Sprinkle your center mixture all over batter. Cover with remaining cake mix.

Top with crumb mixture.

Bake for 45-50 minutes, until toothpick comes out clean. Take out and let cool completely. You can cut cake out of pan, or you can gently flip over onto serving platter and then place crumb side up. Lightly dust with powdered sugar.

“Next month it might be something about pairing different styles of beer and cheeses,” Howe says. “It’s all about challenging yourself and learning.”

Wine has long held the position of the beverage most eloquently paired with food, but robust craft beers are accelerating into restaurants and onto kitchen tables, resting alongside sophisticated meals.

“I think that yellow, fizzy beers don’t really lend themselves much to food pairings or as an ingredient,” Turner says. “I think that the craft brewing movement is a return to tradition, flavor and diversity as much as it is to anything else. And these flavors do lend themselves to food pairings.”

People might not want to buy a $30 bottle of wine, but you can buy $30 of craft beer and that goes further.”

Rom-com surprise

here’s a reason Bridesmaids isn’t called The Bridesmaid. Kristen Wiig, the star and co-writer (along with Annie Mumolo) of director Paul Feig’s comedy, has a self-effacing streak running right alongside her deadly deadpan streak.

Even when she’s playing the lead, she’s not really playing the lead.

Reedy and extremely pretty, Wiig has a dry, backhanded way of nailing laughs. In the posters and ads for Bridesmaids, all Wiig’s female co-stars strike bigger poses, make bigger faces, take a larger, momentary, more determined share of the spotlight. Wiig hangs back. No stranger to broad comedy (often her least interesting work on Saturday Night Live), she astounded the Wiig-ignorant with her brief but memorable turn as the undermining cable network assistant in Knocked Up. No one has explored the inner workings of a passiveaggressive frenemy the way Wiig has. She has the Midas touch for activating a character’s petty streak while still making audiences like her.

In Bridesmaids, audiences, I suspect, will like her a lot, though her character, Annie, an unemployed Milwaukee pastry chef, is a bit of a sad sack. Annie’s half-hearted, purely expedient boyfriend ( Jon Hamm, with whom Wiig shares a riotously funny intercourse prologue) does nothing for her wobbly self-esteem.

When Annie’s best friend, Lillian (Maya Rudolph, always a pleasure), recruits Annie to be her maid of honor, Annie’s ego gradually absorbs a series of blows

inflicted by Lillian’s newfound best pal, the wellheeled and pristinely moneyed Helen (Rose Byrne), who insinuates herself into the planning and execution of Lillian’s wedding. This means war!

The best of Bridesmaids wages war, but with more than the usual R-rated rom-com subtlety. The movie peaks early with an engagement party sequence in which Annie and Helen, glasses in hand, refuse to let each other have the last toast out of newly hatched hypercompetitiveness. Later, alas, come the raunch and the vomit. Too much of it, needless to say. One scene in Bridesmaids, in particular, involving a bad mass reaction to Brazilian food poisoning, clearly got

shoehorned into later versions of the script (producer Judd Apatow has copped to it in various interviews). A separate scene designed to give Wiig, co-star Melissa McCarthy (as a fellow ’maid) and associates some comic elbow room, in which Annie gets drunk and medium-disorderly on a plane to Vegas, never makes good on its promise.

What works best in this routinely shot and directed film adheres to commercial formula but lollygags enough to make the behavior and interactions fresh, as was the case in previous projects from the Apatow stable such as The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up and Superbad. Wiig and Rudolph have remarkable natural rapport; they’re wonderful together. The scenes that truly matter to the story — the ones where we have to feel something’s at stake with this friendship — click satisfyingly into place. Annie’s romance with a genially ineffectual police officer, played by Chris O’Dowd, carries real charm, even when the contrivances keeping them apart feel, well, contrived.

Not unlike Jason Segel’s yearning puppeteer in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Wiig’s character must find a way to get unstuck. She’s self-pitying, to a degree.

Too much of that sort of thing can gum up the works in any comedy. Wiig’s natural and savvy instincts to go easy and let the audience come to her serve her and Bridesmaids well.

Ferrell-in-training

T

he alcoholic son of an alcoholic, sales manager Nick Porter was born in a Raymond Carver short story called “Why Don’t You Dance?” published in the 1981 Carver collection What We Talk About When We Talk About Love. The story, which takes place at a yard sale among one man’s stuff and his regrets, has been expanded into Everything Must Go, from debut feature film writer-director Dan Rush. Will Ferrell, mining the minimalist vein he explored in Stranger Than Fiction, does a valiant job in a picture that, admittedly, is only so big and only medium-sharp.

But Ferrell acts opposite the superb Rebecca Hall (as a new and perplexed neighbor in this sunny Scottsdale, Ariz., neighborhood) and Laura Dern (as a long-ago high school chum Nick visits out of the blue). Hall and Dern, among others, bring out something new, and plaintive, in Ferrell. A movie star doesn’t take on a project such as Everything Must Go to make money. A star does it to become a better actor. Ferrell may appear occasionally stifled by the Boulder Weekly

limited dramatic parameters here, yet in flashes we see combinations, traits, contradictions — funny/sad, pathetic/belligerent, watchful/numb — that prove he’s keeping his co-stars on their toes.

It’s the story of a bad day that turns into a fiveday blur. Nick gets canned. He comes home, a can of Pabst (one of many to come) in his hand, to find all his belongings on the front lawn. His wife has split.

The neighbor across the street, played by Hall, wonders what’s up. A teenager rides up on a bike and soon he finds himself in Nick’s employ, readying the yard sale that will buy Nick some hang-out time until he determines if he wants to sober up, improve his life, learn a damn thing.

The young actor Christopher Jordan Wallace does fine, quiet work as Nick’s protégé; Michael Pena plays a local cop who’s also Nick’s AA sponsor (not a very good one). Rush respects Carver’s slim, vinegar-tinged story while creating new characters and new (and somewhat artificial) situations. The results go only so far. Yet already Ferrell has come a long way as a seriocomic screen presence, quite apart from the movies that have ensured he can test his mettle on the occasional small-scale challenge on the order of Everything Must Go. —MCT, Tribune Media Service Respond:letters@boulderweekly.com
