Garden wars

(Re: “Garden wars,” cover story, May 3.) I believe that dogs in the community gardens is a violation of state law, for the same reason that dogs are not allowed in places selling food.

Fecal contamination of food is a public safety issue. Any activity endangering the health and safety of others is prohibited in Boulder county open space as well.

Dogs walk in areas contaminated with feces, and dangerous pathogens can stick to their feet. No sane person wants their food contaminated with fecal coliform bacteria or wants to be infected by hook worms, tape worms or round worms.

The rights of a person end when their activity endangers the safety of another. Many dog owners are really no different than rapists, child molesters or drunk drivers. When it

comes to dog waste they don’t care who gets hurt by it if they get the pleasure of owning a dog.

couple of weeks ago the price of natural gas dropped below $2 per thousand cubic feet, the lowest it has been in more than a decade before rebounding somewhat. For that, the 99 percent — the 99 percent of Boulder residents who heat their homes with natural gas, that is — can thank an oil company.

FROM THE ‘DUH’ CATEGORY Note to would-be thieves: If you are actually stupid enough to steal something valuable from some poor innocent person, don’t go on national television to try to sell it, because if you do, you will likely get arrested and go to jail.

This is the lesson that Erie resident Gene Newton apparently (and allegedly) failed to get from his parents. While other kids were learning about fencing stolen goods, it appears that Gene was busy watching the Discovery Channel.

According to reports, Newton went on the television show American Guns and was attempting to sell a couple of pistols, including an 1800s vintage colt Dragoon black powder revolver worth as much as $20K. While good for ratings, the superduper rare revolver also piqued the interest of a viewer in New Mexico who had, coincidentally, just been robbed of such a gun. A couple of phone calls later and the Erie police were arresting Newton for allegedly trying to sell the stolen gun on national television.

POLIS IS MOSTLY RIGHT As you read in Pamela White’s “Uncensored” column this week, U.S. Rep. Jared Polis doesn’t think that pizza should be counted as a vegetable in school lunches.

He also thinks that it’s wrong to allow giant agribusinesses to sell cheap crap food at big profits to our kids and then buy off politicians with campaign contributions to keep the whole unhealthy scheme going. Hard to argue with that part.

But it seems that Rep. Polis hasn’t spent much time eating in school cafeterias.

If he had, he would realize that the lousy pizza is one of the few foods served that actually gets eaten at all. Until we really do the right thing and go all Jamie Oliver on our school lunch programs — that’s to say, start shopping for healthy food and preparing it in delicious ways that the British food activist has shown can be done for the same money we now spend on vegetables like pizza — redefining where pepperoni, catsup and bread goes on the food pyramid or wheel or whatever it’s called now just doesn’t matter much. Until then, both our kids and the greedy crapfood corporations will get fatter.

We likely yawned or clapped politely when the president of our alma mater took the podium at graduation. But it was probably somebody we barely knew the name of. Benson must be pretty bad if that many in the audience knew enough about him to boo.

After finishing his speech, he proceeded to spend most of the remainder of the ceremony reading a document.

Talk about disengaged and checked out.

Not sure he has changed many minds since the outcry against his appointment more than four years ago.

It’s about time to go back to hiring accomplished faculty leaders as presidents, academics who have a true appreciation for things like academic freedom, tenure and the open marketplace of ideas.

Arresting obesity

The number of Americans considered obese is expected to rise from the current 34 percent to 42 percent by the year 2030, according to a study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine and discussed at the recent “Weight of the Nation” conference in Washington.

Diabetes, kidney failure, heart disease, and other obesity-related ailments account for countless premature deaths and as much as 18 percent of the $2.6 trillion national cost of medical care (wapo.st/obesestudy).

The leading causes of obesity are consumption of fat-laden meat and dairy products and lack of exercise.

This is particularly critical during childhood years, when lifestyle habits become lifelong addictions.

A five-year Oxford University study of 22,000 people, published in the International Journal of Obesity in 2006, found that those on a vegetarian or vegan diet gained the least weight. A review of 87 studies in Nutrition Reviews concluded that a vegetarian diet is highly effective for weight loss.

The time has come to replace meat and dairy products in our diet with wholesome grains, vegetables, and fruits and to undertake a regular exercise program. Parents should insist on healthy school lunch choices and set a good example at their own dinner table.

As the Supreme Court, the unelected decider of elections and politically charged issues, ponders the fate of the affordable care act/ Obamacare, as to whether, in their almighty power, they will allow Americans to have the health coverage we elected our Congress to allow us to buy, the question of whether we can constitutionally require a person to buy something he or she does not want to buy seems to be the main sticking point and current GOP wedge issue.

To that, I say the bill does not force anybody to buy anything. It just requires them to pay a small price for something they already have. Case in point, and there are numerous cases, a healthy young man does not buy health insurance and breaks his neck Boulder Weekly

on a trampoline, requiring $150,000 in surgical and rehabilitation costs. As a humanitarian nation we will provide him with his care rather than let him die.

The cost will be absorbed by higher hospital rates that are paid by higher premiums from those of us with health insurance.

Obamacare will, for the first time, bring a level of fairness while controlling the cost of health insurance.

Returning to unregulated for-profit

health insurance will, and has allowed, people to die who can’t afford the premiums or have pre-existing conditions.

The insurance oligopoly (businesses that conspire together to set prices) is also hobbling our manufacturing industries that must bear the burden of 18 percent health insurance rates, the highest in the industrialized world.

If not even one of the ideologically right-wing Supreme Court judges

are able or willing to allow our Congress to make decisions in the best interest of the people, this nation will continue to suffer from skyrocketing insurance premiums and Wall Street death panels that only care about increasing profits.

Consequently, the 75 percent of people who now do not respect the judgment of the court will increase as we continue on the path of predator economics.

Granted, Brigham has had mental problems and has admitted being hospitalized for his illness. City officials have known this for a long time. So why issue a restraining order now?

Brigham thinks it’s because he got too close. He started questioning city council members about their records.

Brigham began uncovering publicly available documents on the Internet that appear to show that some council members failed to accurately disclose all of the financial information required by law on their candidate disclosure forms, an offense that can, but rarely does, lead to elected officials being removed from office. He started to question councilmember Becker’s campaign image as a middle-class working mom, revealing that she has connections to wealth. Brigham also alleged that councilmember Karakehian did not disclose all of his financial ties when he filled out the necessary forms to run for re-election last fall.

The following is what the law requires to be disclosed by all those Boulder Weekly

news running for city council under the subhead of “Business Interests”:

“State the name, location, and nature of activity of any business entities or enterprises for profit, with holdings of real or personal property or with business dealings in the area encompassed by the Boulder Valley Comprehensive Plan (BVCP), in which you may have any financial interest, or in which you are actively engaged as an officer, director, or partner.

“For each, state the nature of your interest or activity therewith, and state whether you have controlling interest in the entity.

Business entity means any type of business: sole proprietorship, joint venture, partDistrict Attorney nership, Stan Garnett corporation, trust holding, or investment company, professional corporation, etc. It is immaterial whether the business is making money.”

After receiving an email from Brigham, which stated that his investigation into the disclosure issues of Karakehian and others on council had been stopped by the city’s restraining order, Boulder Weekly took a look into what Brigham claimed to have found and had turned over to Carr and District Attorney Stan Garnett.

This is what Brigham wrote to Stan Garnett:

“Dear Mr. Garnett, I’m sure that you are aware of the controversy surrounding e-mails I sent to The City of Boulder.

After more than two months of Open records requests, I was finally given some Financial Disclosures of Boulder City Council that I found to be insufficient.

I asked several times for the records department to clarify the requirements in regard to local and state law, as I felt the disclosures did not meet the requirements.

I asked The City Attorney, Tom Carr, to clarify. No one would respond to these questions.

I began to investigate on my own and found businesses and financial partnership that were not disclosed.

Though I only began to investigate KC Becker and George K, I did find some financial interests that were questionable and/or not disclosed as required by law.

As to the claim that Karakehian failed to disclose his insurance company, it appears that the councilmember has not been in that business for nearly two decades. His only income from his old insurance business at this point,

according to Karakehian, is about $170 a year in old renewal income which, being less than $1,000 per year, is not required to be disclosed. As for the “several partnership LLCs with Stephen Tebo,” as Brigham describes it, there appears to be something to it.

A

fter years of fighting Boulder County land use codes and regulations, Zia Parker is selling her farm and moving with her husband to Ecuador in hopes that running a permaculture farm will encounter fewer obstacles in the South American country.

Parker’s farm, Willow Way, is a permaculture herb farm and herbal CSA in Niwot.

Permaculture is a design method that uses the principles of natural ecosystems to create diversified food production systems anywhere from rural farms to urban apartments — a method that seems like it would fit perfectly in Boulder.

But Parker also intended her farm to be a demonstration farm where people could go to learn about permaculture practices. This demonstration aspect brought trouble in the form of a cringe-worthy saga of public hearings, objecting neighbors and tight restrictions.

Smith says they’ll be making use of permaculture’s ability to work in both rural and urban settings and will take the demonstrations from the farm to the sites of those interested in learning about techniques. Because Parker’s problems stemmed largely from concerns about privacy and increased traffic, Smith says she does not anticipate problems with the local government or neighbors.

“We really believe in having open communication with the neighbors,” Mitchell says. “I don’t think we’re going to be doing anything they’ll find objectionable at all.”

When Parker first attempted to start her demonstration farm, her application was sent to a public hearing. The Land Use Department approved the farm, but only under certain conditions.

“We’re going to continue the legacy of sustainability and growing herbs, but

also look at expanding to include more vegetables and fruits,” Mitchell says.

Mitchell and Smith say they will also retain the educational aspect of Willow Way, though through different methods than Parker.

“I’ve been in the permaculture community for the past 25 years, and I’m a fifth-generation organic farmer,” Smith says. “One of the things I’ve done in my career is permaculture projects onsite for schools, churches, institutions and individuals that just want to have their

Last week, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) issued a 12-month listing determination for the Arapahoe snowfly, ruling that protection of the insect was warranted under the Endangered Species Act. Unfortunately, it won’t be happening any time soon because the USFWS says it has higher priorities.

This means that upon publication of the 12-month listing determination, the Arapahoe snowfly will only be added to a candidate species list and will only move toward endangered species protection as priorities allow.

But it isn’t as if time is on the snowfly’s side. The Arapahoe snowfly is found along only two small tributaries of the Cache la Poudre River in Northern Colorado: Young Gulch and Elkhorn Creek. According to a press release from Rocky Mountain Wild, “A recent status review developed by the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation strongly indicates that this aquatic insect is critically imperiled and

may be on the brink of extinction.”

The major threats to the Arapahoe snowfly are logging, habitat damage, livestock grazing, stream de-watering and the application of insecticides in the vicinity of Elkhorn Creek.

According to the event website, individuals and families can choose a “1K or 3K walk that explores Walden Ponds’ best wildlife viewing areas.

Along the way, participants will be treated to interactive environmental learning activities hosted by local environmental education groups. Registration fees and the additional pledges from friends and family will

support bird habitat conservation projects at Walden Ponds.”

The event will offer activities for kids including birdhouse building and award prizes to teams and individuals who rasied the most in pledges.

Boulder Audubon Society, Cal-Wood Education Center, Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory, Nature’s Educators, University of Colorado Museum of Natural History, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, and City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks will provided “Education Stations” along the walk’s route.

“We had a great inaugural Walk on the Wild Side in 2011 that raised enough funds to purchase and plant 88 native trees and shrubs. Walkers will be able to see the impact of this planting,” says Susan Bonfield, director of Environment for the Americas.

Registration for the event is $20 for adults, $25 for families, $10 for virtual walkers and children under 12.

The county restricted the number of cars that could be at the property to just 10, and limited where cars could park.

Though Parker’s application made clear she intended Willow Way to be a demonstration farm, she was told she could only give three tours per year. Finally, the county ruled that her studio would have to incorporate two disability accessible bathrooms.

“With a 600 square foot studio, that

would mean we would barely have space for the classroom,” Parker says.

Parker proposed putting two disability accessible portable toilets on her farm instead. Her request was denied, however, as portable toilets are not covered in the land use codes, she says.

“The county wasn’t against me. The codes were,” Parker says. “The county did not interpret the codes in favor of sustainability, and they did not use the processes available to them to change the codes to favor this sustainabilitybased project. In many instances, the codes are absolutely contrary to sustain-

ability.”

Parker says she believes the county could greatly improve its support of small farmers and sustainable practices by streamlining the process by which land use codes are changed. “[Officials in the Land Use Department] say that they’re just doing their jobs and that they have to follow the codes,” Parker says. “Well, whose job is it to make the codes, and adapt the codes to the needs of the people and the land? We need to be able to change the codes so that they support sustainable practices.”

Though Mitchell and Smith will continue the sustainable, permaculture practices of the farm, Parker says she believes the root problems with what shut her farm down still need to be resolved.

“The planet is screaming for attention, for common sense, for human beings to be considering her in every decision,” Parker says. “The codes need to be more adapted to the needs of a changing planet. The whole process needs to be more supportive of the Earth.”

hen the second incarnation of the Boulder Roots & Blues Summit kicks off this weekend at the Boulder Theater and Fox Theatre, audiences will be able to take their pick from a smorgasbord of musical delights ranging from hirsute folk rocker Anders Osborne to silkysmooth bluesman Keb’ Mo’ — with Colorado group Musketeer Gripweed mixed in as fodder for localsourcers.

Yet organizers scored a coup when farming out the lineup for this year’s event, adding Grammy Awardwinning American blues guitarist and roots instrumentalist Taj Mahal to the bill. In town to help celebrate Colorado’s support for unique music along with celebrating his 70th birthday, the headline act epitomizes not only the musical genres touted in the Summit, but some of the ideals associated with the city throwing the party as well.

A routine conversation last week intended to tout his own Boulder appearance May 18 — featuring “Steady Rollin’” Bob Margolin, Taj’s daughter Deva

Mahal (along with her New Zealand-based touring outfit Fredericks Brown) and Keb’ Mo’ — turned into a free-flowing conversation touching many different topics. Like the Renaissance man that he is, the rambling-yet-focused conversation took many turns, but in the end came back to the same interplay between humans that define our times here on this marble.

The Taj Mahal in Agra, India, was a labor of love that took 22 years to complete. More than 300 years after completion of the original, with a body of work more than twice as long in the making, Taj Mahal has firmly planted his own taproot in the garden of American music. American to the core, he shares a passion for some of the most valued commodities we care about besides the sometimes-polluted air.

“There are two things that people are not gonna do without, and that’s food and that is music,” he says.

“These two things are part of the natural world to me.”

obert Olson remembers the first time he conducted Mahler’s Second Symphony.

“When you get to conduct your first Second, it’s like your first love,” he says.

“You never forget it.”

“Oh man, I wish I could fill you in on the nightmare of bringing up this light show; you have no idea,” he says.

“Before we left for this tour, we spent about 72 hours designing lights for every one of the songs. And the hardware that used to run the whole thing decided not to work. We got another one, and that one broke, so we kind of went back to square one with the lights.

We’ll keep pressing on and hope we get some good house light support.”

And Grossi, who’s lived in Los Angeles since getting his art degree from CU in 2008, says he’s looking forward to returning to Colorado, even if a Boulder date would be that much sweeter.

“Man, I would love to play a show in Boulder, that’d be a great homecoming for me, to be able to do a show at the Boulder Theater,” he says. “That’d be a beautiful thing.”

Olson’s first experience with the Second Symphony was 23 years ago, in the festival’s second year. And he says it was the make-or-break event for the brand-new festival.

“It’s one thing to put enough people on stage for the First Symphony,” which he had conducted in the festival’s first year, he says. “The real test was going to come with the Second. I had to go from recruiting a 70-piece orchestra to about a 105-piece orchestra, plus the chorus, plus two soloists. To my surprise, I ended up having to turn orchestral musicians down. hen water washed away the red sandstone of the Colorado Plateau, it left the improbable spires of rust-colored rock, fingers flipping off the over-baking sun and the sand-spitting wind and the improvised protection the climbers who lusted after the tops of those towers would have to rely on in pursuit of a summit.

It’s these spires that Steve “Crusher” Bartlett explores in his book, Desert Towers: Fat Cat Summits and Kitty Litter Rock, a historic tome loaded with images to twang the imaginations of any climber who loves to lock hands with splitter cracks. Desert Towers chronicles almost a century of climbers laboring their way up precarious stacks of sandstone, drawing from around a hundred interviews and submitted photos and essays. For as long as the man who has summited 130 towers, 30 of them first ascents, has been climbing Entrada and Wingate sandstone, people have been fighting to protect those wilderness areas and the experiences only that hard-bitten landscape can offer.

They’re working to preserve as much of that empty landscape in pristine condition for other adventurers, whether they’re enjoying it from atop its towers or sunken into its canyons.

t’s hard not to mention Chicken Run without wanting to make a joke about Mel Gibson voicing a rooster. And while that may be the lasting thought from the 2000 movie, the fact remains that it was an affable claymation adventure from Aardman Animations that holds up well when compared with the relentless CGI dreck that has infested theaters over the last decade-plus. So when The Pirates!

Band of Misfits was announced, the general reaction was curiosity and muted enthusiasm. It would have been more intense anticipation, but admitting you’re excited for a cartoon sometimes puts you on watch lists.

Sadly, Pirates is neither quite engaging enough for children nor quite intelligent enough for adults, despite featuring the inclusion of Charles Darwin, which may be an animated first. The film follows a pirate captain named Pirate Captain, which is the most onthe-nose name since Dirk Diggler.

Pirate Captain, voiced by former hooker enthusiast Hugh Grant, is sad that he continues to lose the Pirate of the Year award to folks like Black Bellamy ( Jeremy Piven), Cutlass Liz (Salma Hayek) and Peg Leg Hastings (Lenny Henry). But the goofy, well-intentioned leader has a plan … sort of.

A chance meeting with Charles Darwin (David Tennant) reveals that the Pirate Captain’s parrot is actually a dodo bird. So, with the help of Darwin’s sidekick, a man-panzee named Mr. Bobo, the gang heads into the heart of the empire ruled by the pirateloathing Queen Victoria (Imelda Staunton) to compete in a scientific competition that may just net Pirate Captain his coveted title. Also, evolu-

tion is joked about, which also may be a first for an animated movie.

Here’s the major problem with the largely good-lookin’ Pirates: it’s boring.

And not just for adults! Had this been jam-packed with wedgies and fart jokes, it would have at least been understandable. The truth is, the film is just far too slow for anyone with a pulse, whether they poo in public or not. Whereas Chicken Run had a clever script to support the painstaking animation, Pirates just kind of meanders. Half-developed jokes about a pirate passing as a male when she is “surprisingly curvaceous” never pay off, and quips about gout feel tepid at best.

Here’s the point where 3D comes up. The film, which is offered in extra dimensions most everywhere it is playing, is further proof that the gimmick only works in capable hands. Not to say that directors Peter Lord and Jeff Newitt are incompetent, but Marty Scorsese or Werner Herzog they ain’t.

While a movie like Up leveraged the tool to provide dimension, Pirates embraces it half-heartedly, which aptly describes the film itself.

Look, Pirates isn’t bad by any means. But it is somewhat monotonous and surprisingly disengaging. There’s a reason why, despite the fact that movies appealing to children represent the safest box office bet, you haven’t heard much about this one. Aardman Animations deserves a place at the animation table, but Pirates doesn’t justify their portion size.

Next up was a more exotic wing, flavored with sriracha. Wisely, the kitchen here decided not to serve this with straight-up red pepper sauce, which might have made these wings unbearably hot. A subtle undertone of what might be fruit successfully rounded out the flavor, contributing surprisingly complexity.

For classic hot wings, the four choices range from “you can” to “you better not.” Perhaps channeling the culinary equivalent of Lewis, the Burt Reynolds character from Deliverance, we went for the “better not.” These lived up to their billing, and made me glad to have a root beer close at hand for relief. Yet the heat was still modulated to the point that this wasn’t simply an exercise in pain, and one could detect tones other than raw fire.

Of the four choices, our favorite was the mango habanero, which compellingly balanced solid heat with honeyed fruit. Like the hot wings, it was indisputably spicy, but not off-puttingly so, and didn’t obscure the underlying chicken flavor. The sweet tang of tropical fruit effectively complemented the slightly floral qualities of the habanero.

evotees of hot wings would be wise to book a flight to Buffalo, N.Y., to attend the National Buffalo Wing Festival, which will be held Sept. 1-2. Last year’s event attracted some 85,000 attendees who chowed down on more than a half million wings, weighing in at an impressive 37 tons of poultry.

This year’s event will include the U.S. Wing Eating Championship, sauce-offs for both restaurants and amateurs, and a Cheesiest Couple contest. No word on whether Wing Eating champion Sonya Thomas will be on hand to defend her title, which she earned after eating 183 wings.

The next time I get a hankering for wings, which probably happens more often than I should admit, I’ll make a beeline for South Mouth. It’s entirely possible that this eatery’s impressively flavorful wings could nudge this poultry pleasure up to the pantheon of guilty culinary indulgences.

In news you may already know — Colorado beer manufacturers make some wicked brews. That fact was hammered home at the recent Brewers Associated World Beer Cup, where Colorado brewers took home 27 medals in the blind tasting evaluation dubbed “The Olympics of Beer Competition.”

The ninth bi-annual competition showcased more than 3,900 beers from 54 different countries, judged in 95 style categories. That Colorado brewers culled such a large haul of hardware shows the effort and love this state puts into their quaff. Gold medal winner Kris Oyler of Steamworks Brewing in Durango summed up the ho-hum attitude of dudes who just love beer by saying, “We’re really proud, but not surprised.”

“It’s further proof that Colorado has one of the most advanced beer cultures in the world,” Steve Kurowski of the Colorado Brewer’s Guild said in a press release. The nonprofit trade association provides information for Colorado beer lovers and features 20 of the 27 Colorado award winners under its umbrella.

Venerable Boulder sushi joint Hapa on the Hill closed last week, 13 years after opening inside the Fox Theatre, leaving its Pearl Street location as the only place in town to serve up the Hapa culture and food that made the restaurant so successful.

The Pennsylvania Avenue location was not shuttered for long, however, as the restaurant has re-opened under new ownership as Sushi Hana.

hona grew up believing, as most of us are taught to believe, that cannabis is a gateway drug that leads to the use of other worse drugs. She used cannabis a couple of times in college for fun, but never really thought of it as medicine. After being diagnosed with a near fatal case of Crohn’s Disease—suffering daily with debilitating nausea and vomiting—Shona decided in a desperate moment (with strong encouragement from her husband) to try cannabis to give her some relief from the horrible symptoms. Believing she was going to die and feeling that this was a last resort, she started using the cannabis daily and immediately got significant relief. After watching a special on Rick Simpson and Phoenix Tears, Shona began to explore the idea of using concentrates to treat her Crohn’s. She discovered by vaporizing the raw flower into a resin-like hash, and then orally taking the hash in gel caps, she not only got relief from the symptoms but she started to heal herself of the Crohn’s disease.

In 2010 Shona published a book about her journey called “Live Free or Die” available (nationally) at Barnes and Noble and on Amazon. She is the first person to ever get a book published on the medicinal benefits of cannabis. Today Shona is cured of the Crohn’s disease, and she works to help other ill patients heal themselves using hash oil as well.
