Anti-fracking sentiment looks like classic NIMBY

While I’m sure we all feel for Eric Ewing’s family situation [Re: “Fractured dream: What happens when a fracking operation moves in across the street?”

Specifically, we need to address how you dress.

First, the good news: At long last, the “metrosexual” look, style, demeanor, and even the idea of the metrosexual man is dead, officially proclaimed passé by the “styles” section of the New York Times. About time, too — it was so

However, your typical man-person will not be thrilled to hear what the world of fashion has in store for us next. The driving force that will determine what we’ll be wearing is called “Henry.” Not Longfellow or Thoreau (both are so old school), but a spiffy acronym that stands for “High Earner, Not Rich Yet.” Worse, a Wall Street fashion analyst gushes that the new model for men’s couture is — ready? — “A Yummy.” That would be a Young Urban Male. Makes you miss “yuppie,” doesn’t it.

And what is this style? A Times photo shows a tall blond Yummy wearing a overcoat that looks as if he has draped a shower curtain around him (albeit a cashmere shower curtain). “We needed a kind of fresh look,” says the head of Zenga, a men’s fashion purveyor. By “fresh,” he’s talking about silken coats that resemble bathrobes, shirts with yard-long sleeves that you scrunch up — oh, and narrow pants are in, very

in. As one retail executive explained, “[it’s about] the way a narrow trouser makes you feel.” Hmmm, I think “squeezed” would be my answer to that.

Speaking of squeezed, we’re talking luxury duds — a Yummy suit runs between $5,000 and $17,000. And don’t forget your luxury, man’s bag. These are “a growing segment,” enthused one investment manager, adding that, “I’m not the only one in meetings now with a luxury branded-bag.”

I guarantee you he’d be the only man-bag toter in any of the meetings I go to. But then, I’m not a Yummy.

Thanks for nothing. You could have published just one line, mercury found in fish in national parks, instead of you went on and on about it like a skipping record. If there is mercury in fish that we catch, how much is harmful? That’s what I want to know. One fish, two fish, how many before it’s harmful for me? And how about the fish in food stores? No comparisons to those at all?

I just read the article about the BolderBoulder “sissy” t-shirts [“BolderBoulder ‘sissy’ T-shirt stirs debate,” News, April 24].

I find it very puzzling that representatives of Out Boulder and other groups

find the word “sissy” to be offensive, when they throw around the word “queer” widely in speech and in print.

Why is “queer” — a word that I find highly offensive — OK while “sissy” is not? I don’t like either word.

Lima-Marin’s story begins in 2000 when he was just 20 years old and convicted of using a gun to rob two Aurora video stores along with an accomplice. A judge sentenced LimaMarin to serve 98 years consecutively on eight convictions, but a clerk made a mistake and wrote in his file that the sentences were to be served at the same time, according to CBS News and The Associated Press. So Lima-Marin was released in 2008 on parole — 90 years too early. Once out, Lima-Marin worked to turn his life around, finding work and getting back together with his former girlfriend. He even married her in July to celebrate his fifth anniversary of parole. He “definitely was not the same person” he was years ago, his wife Jasmine says. But the reformed inmate story didn’t sway authorities. A sentence is a sentence and apparently the state’s prison system aims to punish offenders first and reform them second. Thus Lima-Marin was sent back to prison against his family’s pleas.

“He was given an opportunity to live again and it was taken away from him,” Jasmine says.

Boulder County is lucky to have a coroner as dedicated to her work as Ms. Hall. I urge you to cast your vote for Emma Hall.

Doug Young/Firestone County coroner complaints I lost the most precious person in my life in 2013. She was my nine-yearold daughter. She passed away in her sleep at my home in Superior on January 12, 2013.

My home was immediately treated as a crime scene and I was taken to the local police station for questioning. In retrospect, this protocol I now under-

stand. I was told at that time that results from the Boulder County Coroner’s Office would take 6 weeks.

I did receive autopsy results over six months later — July 18 to be exact.

There is not enough space in this letter to tell you all the calls, emails and letters I sent to the coroner’s office requesting updates on my daughter’s case and specifically asking to speak with Ms. Hall. I got little or no

response. Never once did Ms. Hall return a call to me. I got one standard email back from her saying my daughter’s case was ongoing.

I contacted my daughter’s pediatrician and neurologist as well as the Boulder County DA to contact Ms. Hall and they were given no information either. I even sought the help of a see LETTERS Page 12

True, for most of the life of the Republic, Congress met in the Capitol in the capital because meeting there was the only way the members could conduct business in real time. When the Senate and the House convened back in the day, the members were actually talking to each other, instead of speaking for the record or show-boating for the cameras.

These days when the Senate or the House is in session, most of the members aren’t even in the chamber.

What’s more, Congress only meets for three or four days a week anyway.

Most congressmen go back to their districts during the long weekends.

Still, wouldn’t requiring Congress to meet in a tent instead of in the Capitol building (or more plainly in a palace) detract from the dignity of the institution?

You bet it would. That’s a big part of the reason for getting rid of Washington. The dignity of the institution is one of the things that’s contributing to dysfunction of the institution.

When you spend your life in plush, paneled chambers in buildings supported by Greek columns and sporting Roman domes, you start paying too much attention to the dignity of the institution and the dignity of your office, and not enough attention to the dignity of the individual.

But wouldn’t moving the government out of Washington devastate Washington’s economy? Of course not.

The hotels, the Smithsonian museums, the monuments, and the restaurants would still be there. It would still be a great tourist and convention town. Look at Rome. The Roman Empire moved out of Rome 1,519 years ago, and today it gets more tourists than it ever did back then, even though its monuments are in much worse shape.

national organization, the SUDC – Sudden Unexplained Death in Children to contact the coroner’s office.

I took matters into my own hands and directly contacted the forensic pathologist in Denver who after a lengthy delay had been sent my daughter’s slides/samples.

The sudden and unexpected loss of a precious child is indescribable. How my daughter’s case was handled by the Boulder County Coroner’s Office under Ms. Hall’s supervision added to my grief beyond words.

And to make matters worse, I was called in July by a Deputy Coroner to say that the autopsy results found nothing and asked me what I wanted to be listed on my daughter’s death certificate as to her cause of death. The nature was natural, but they would list Sudden Unexplained Death in a Child due to Epilepsy unless I wanted something different. My daughter had no history of epilepsy.

I moved from Boulder County after living there 25 years in October. I implore the voters to not re-elect Ms. Hall. I hope no person ever has to experience what I did in dealing with the Boulder County Coroner, Emma Hall.

That’s what happened to my friend when the Howe Mortuary went up in flames. His suffering, grief and anger were beyond words. He arrived at the scene of the fire wanting answers. What had happened to his wife? When he learned that his wife’s body and many others were in the fire, he was inconsolable. Several of us convinced him to go home, and I stayed behind hoping to get more answers.

I got those answers from Emma Hall. She sat down with me and took the time to tell me how she and her team from the coroner’s office were handling the investigation and the steps they would take to properly identify each body. That was a huge relief because our biggest concern was that we would not get the proper remains.

She explained in detail how they would use medical histories and unique physical characteristics to make the identification, and she shared some of the clues they already had. After talking with Emma, I had complete confidence that everything would be properly sorted out.

I also had a chance to speak with several members of Emma’s staff.

Emma and her team were all professional, but I was especially touched that everyone was so caring. They went the extra mile to answer as many questions as possible for the families and to make sure that all the identifications were correct.

Boulder County is lucky to have Emma as the coroner. I know firsthand of her compassion, her professionalism and her dedication to her work. That’s why I’ll be supporting Emma for a second term as coroner. Simply put, she’s the best.

Lawless lanes

There is no law and order left in Colorado. Drive any street or highway in Colorado at posted speed limit and you’ll see exactly what I’m talking about. The majority of motorists are traveling at least 20 mph over the speed limit as if it is their right to do so.

Highway patrol is nowhere to be seen.

The highway patrol says it is the general assemblies’ fault because they have so severally cut back on allocations. The Glenwood Springs office can only afford to retain two officers to police a five county area. And of course, all those folks out on the road and traveling at 20 mph over the limit say, “great, it means I can go as fast as I want with no repercussions.”

When the governor is contacted about what the highway patrol is saying about the problem, the governor has no comment. In fact, you cannot even get him or our representatives to respond.

The one I got to call me back to discuss the matter spoke with me less than one minutes and his only comment was, “it’s the Democrats’ fault, after all they are the ones in control.” As far as solutions are concerned, I got nothing. He said at that point he had to go to a meeting and that he would call me back. He never did.

Of course, if you do drive at speed limit and come up on a truck traveling a little slower than speed limit and start to pass, that is when you really get in trouble. If you don’t get around the truck at 85 mph and get back in the outside lane then someone will come up behind you tailgating and honking their horn because you’re in their way.

There is no law and order left in Colorado, nor any decency or respect for one another, not while you are behind the wheel of a car.

Rep. Polis and West Virginia senator spar over dollars and bitcoins Since January of 2013, Jared Polis has received $568,821 in net campaign contributions, more than $123,000 of it his own money. What’s unclear in our analysis of the Democratic congressman’s Federal Election Commission filings is how much of those funds will be bitcoins. The controversial currency created in 2009 by someone using the alias Satoshi Nakamoto eliminates the need for banks, can be used to make purchases anonymously and are a go-to standard for foreign currency speculators. While the Defense Department has launched a study to determine whether bitcoins threaten American national security, the FEC has ruled that people can plunk down a limited number bitcoins to back their favorite political candidates. Polis quickly announced with a donation-friendly website that he’s “proud to be one of the first members of Congress to promote personal financial freedom” by accepting bitcoins and has so far raised about $1,500 from 39 donors since his announcement earlier this month. Polis, who became an online millionaire before entering Congress, seems a perfect match for the pioneering bitcoin. In March, he sent a letter to federal regulators calling for a ban on U.S. dollar bills, a currency he believes is unstable and linked to illicit activities such as drug trafficking. “The very features of dollar bills, such as anonymous transactions, have created ubiquitous uses from drug purchases, to hit men, to prostitutes, as dollar bills are attractive to criminals who are able to disguise their actions from law enforcement,” Polis writes in his March 5 letter to Treasury Secretary Jack Lew, Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen and others. Polis’ letter was strikingly similar to one by Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.V., urging the government to ban bitcoins. “The very features that make bitcoin attractive to some also attract criminals who are able to disguise their actions from law enforcement,” Manchin wrote to Lew, Yellen and others. “Due to bitcoin’s anonymity, the virtual market has been extremely susceptible to hackers and scam artists stealing millions from bitcoins users.”

Food activists plan march against Monsanto Although the titanic Monsanto chemical and agricultural biotechnology corporation is headquartered in Missouri, activists around the globe, including Boulder County, are preparing to mobilize on May 24 to take issue with genetically-engineered foods also referred to as GMOs. Groups are being organized in several locations around Colorado, including Boulder, Longmont, Loveland, the Vail Valley, Denver, Colorado Springs and Pueblo, according to international organizers for the March Against Monsanto. The event aims to raise concerns about environmental and health risks associated with Monsanto products, including the company’s seeds. “Some of the things that she’s said about the improvements she’s made is like comparing apples to oranges because they weren’t done the same way, and that’s OK, you can run the office however you want,” says Amber Grantham, who worked for the coroner’s office for three years with Faure and one year with Hall. “But I will say that the policies and procedures that she implemented, they decreased the morale of the staff.”

Grantham worked at the coroner’s office as part of an ongoing career in the medical field that began while she was a University of Colorado Boulder student working in ambulances.

She left that position a year after Hall began as county coroner over incidents she says she felt compromised her ethics to the point she took them to human resources — whose only reply was to say that Hall’s an elected official, and there wasn’t much they could do.

While all the new equipment is nice, Grantham says, at no point before it was purchased did she feel like she didn’t have what she needed to get her job done. She adds that the uniforms caused her to worry that the coroner’s staff, who are independent from law enforcement though they may collaborate and do interviews in tandem, would be confused as law enforcement agents.

“I can give you examples where I would go in and say, ‘Listen, I’m not a cop, anything that you tell me I do not have to share with them, it can be off the record, but we think that this person died of an overdose and it’s really important that you tell me what you were doing so that way we can do the right test,’” Grantham says. “And people would say to me, ‘OK, don’t tell them because I don’t want to get in trouble with the cops but...’”

Bottom line, she says: “At three o’clock in the morning when I say, ‘I’m sorry, your dad is dead, but don’t worry, our office is organized’ — that’s meaningless. You want somebody who’s going to say, ‘I’m sorry, I want to give you some empathy, I want to give you some

cult change to suddenly have expectations and accountability and structure,” Hall says. “I was kind of methodically going through and making changes and not just making all of my changes all at once, but it was definitely hard for them.”

Two of her previous employees see it differently, though, and one of them is asking Boulder County’s voters to give him her job.

Dempsey worked in the Boulder County Coroner’s office as a medical investigator for half a decade before Hall was hired. He stayed five months after she started as his supervisor.

“There was a philosophical difference,” Dempsey explains. “This race isn’t personal by any means. I really think that this is about experience. And what I did see was a lack of experience. When the coroner took over in 2011, she only had 18 months of experience in the field prior to being elected and I think it’s very hard to develop an administrative policy in only 18 months.”

Dempsey’s arrival at the coroner’s office came by chance. The Ohio native, who studied criminal justice in college, was working with at-risk youth at Attention Homes and was on track to become a fire fighter, having earned an EMT certificate and started volunteering for the rural fire department, when the job opened up at the coroner’s office.

“I’ve always been passionate about public service and it was through an unexpected career in the coroner’s office I found that you could really provide a needful public service in a way I’d never expected,” says Dempsey, who now works in the Jefferson County coroner’s office as a medical investigator.

Hall says the impression she got from Dempsey was that “he really wanted to be in charge” and that she didn’t see a lot of “big picture thinking” from him and struggled to get him on task with projects like inventorying cases he might be behind on or helping to clean up the vehicles.

“A lot of people that don’t really know what they’re getting into when they get into this field think that all they’re going to do is scene work, so they don’t really have a good grasp or a real interest, or I don’t know if I want to use passion, but, for the paperwork,” she says. “For me, I don’t love paperwork, but yet I do.”

While Dempsey agrees that there were organizational changes needed at the coroner’s office and organization and infrastructure development are clear strengths for Hall, he says he thinks

place that keep you streamlined and organized, then over time, that’s what you’re going to end up with.”

The office is now the paragon of tidiness. Case files are stored in covered shelves, the counter tops and floors are clear and evidence lockers empty unless an investigator is actively sorting through evidence. The once over-stuffed fridge holds just a few carefully labeled samples. She’s also updated the communications equipment so the staff are on the same phones and pagers, instead of the array of various models from different providers that met her arrival. The computer system has been updated and a customized program for tracking case information, including chain of custody for decedent property has been added.

Draft reports are due within 24 hours of a death coming in and are reviewed by Hall or her chief deputy coroner. A white board in one of the offices for the medical investigators tracks the bodies currently in the Boulder Community Health morgue, the off-site facility the coroner uses for storage and autopsies.

Hall has successfully lobbied for a new facility, a 9,000-square-foot building that will house the coroner’s office and morgue in the same facility, along with autopsy suites and case file storage.

Her office has handled an increasingly busy caseload coming from police departments in Longmont, Boulder and Lafayette. Police departments in Boulder had 70 cases in 2012 and 84 in 2013, Longmont had 79 cases in 2012 and 112 in 2013; and Lafayette had 21 in 2012 and 32 in 2013. Those are, respectively, 20 percent, 41.8 percent and 52.4 percent increases.

At campaign events, her opponent has pointed to a 34 percent increase in autopsies, an expensive medical procedure, since 2011, and Hall says that’s correlated to the increase in calls.

By Sunday evening, Arnold recounts, her husband finally started yelling at the coroner’s staff on the phone and demanded to speak to the county coroner herself. It was Arnold who spoke to Hall, and began by recounting her work as a librarian for the jail and a certified ombudsman in nursing homes.

“We’re both advocates for people with disabilities,” she told Hall, adding, “And I want you to know if any daughter was treated beautifully, it was our daughter.”

She also mentioned that Jodi had been taking fish oil. That news came as an apparent surprise to Hall.

Fish oil is a blood thinner. It corroborated the suspicion Arnold had about the CPR Jodi had received as the cause of the bruise on her daughter’s stomach. Hall signed the death certificate and released Jodi’s body so her family could move forward with funeral arrangements.

At the end of the call, Hall offered her condolences.

“It just sounded kind of like a robot, and maybe when you do this work you have to be a robot, because it’s too much otherwise, day after day after day,” says Arnold, who now campaigns for Dempsey. “If she were the only one on the ballot in the primary I just wouldn’t vote for her until I knew she had turned this upside down and said, ‘You know, be very careful when you’re dealing with parents and loved ones.’ … She has organized everything — apparently things were in a big mess, I would not know because I’ve never been in the coroner’s office. But it’s like, what comes first, a clean desk or your interactions with people and making sure your staff kind of don’t go nuts with people?”

B

y the time Francie Sullivan came to wake her 9-year-old daughter, Nicole Haley’s body was already cold. Sullivan and her brother performed CPR on Nicole anyway while waiting for the ambulance to arrive. Standing in her pajamas in her living room, Sullivan had just one question for the law enforcement and medical professionals who soon filled her living room: Was there something else she could have done to save her daughter’s life?

An EMT told her no, Nicole had been gone so long by the time they got there that there was nothing anyone could have done.

Her introduction to the county coroner’s office was through a form letter that said the answer to what happened with Nicole — why a healthy 9-year-old who’d had a well visit to her pediatrician just three days before her death and been cleared for all activities had suddenly died — would be at least six weeks coming.

“I needed answers,” Sullivan says. “An unexpected, unexplained death in a child, it’s any person’s worst nightmare, but to be told, six weeks…”

this is the reason why we need to do this autopsy, which can be different depending on what the case is, but we understand you don’t want an autopsy and we’re willing to give you the time to contact a lawyer if you wish and try to stop us,’” Hall says. “We always give them the disclaimer that it’s never been done in Colorado, but if you want the time to do that we will allow it, and usually what happens is that they come back the next day and say, ‘We’re OK, go ahead and proceed — but now we want to know as soon as possible.’”

Hall’s list of endorsements includes the district attorney’s office, State Rep. KC Becker, Boulder City Council member Tim Plass, the Louisville Chief of Police and the president of the Boulder Valley School District Board of Education. District Attorney Stan Garnett cites her work modernizing the office, her choice in forensic pathologist and her current staff as his reasons for endorsing her — a “hard-working, innovative and smart elected official” who should be given another term.

Dempsey’s own list of endorsements includes former sheriffs, the previous coroner and forensic pathologist for Boulder County, physicians, forensic pathologists and community activists, including victim advocates. Rocky Mountain Lions Eye Bank endorsed Dempsey on the basis that denial or restrictions of cornea donations have increased an average of 800 percent per year under Hall’s adminstration.

He says a letter of support from a former hospice nurse, who would have worked with the coroner’s office to call in deaths that occurred in hospice care, is on the way.

“The perspective that I try to keep is that we are there to provide answers to the family. We have a particular role in that death and we have a responsibility to ask the important questions in an appropriate way,” Dempsey says. “We’re not grief counselors but we have to be aware of the grief and the grieving process and the way that we do our job can have very powerful impacts on the grieving process. … We can ask the appropriate questions and we can choose the right words that will stay with the family for a long time, and we can set them up for a healthy grieving process and they may never realize that we had a part in that process. And we can also respond and do our job poorly and not be sensitive about the words that we choose — we can be accurate, we can be thorough, but if we lack that sensitivity and we’re not cautious about the long-term impact of how we do our job, we can set a family up for a negative grieving process.”

That, he says, is part of why it’s important to have an experienced team of front-line investigators who know how to handle not just the evidence and the reports, but the people they meet with face-to-face and have to interview about the information that will assist in creating an accurate death certificate. They’ll also be responsible for making choices at the scene about how to handle forensic evidence — whether to ask a mother not to hold her dead child, for example, out of concerns she would compromise trace evidence from another caregiver, or a grieving widow should be allowed to kiss the forehead of her husband who appears to have died at home from natural causes.

The race may come down to a question of deciding between organization and empathy — or can both candidates do both?

How the oil and gas industry is backing a fracking-friendly election

hough the election is six months away, the oil and gas industry is already plunging millions of dollars into campaigns to quash proposals seeking to give local governments the power to limit or ban fracking. Though those proposals are still forming, scores of ads from energy industry groups with green-sounding names will join those already on air and in print between now and Election Day, a Boulder Weekly analysis of elections records finds.

One political issue committee, Protecting Colorado’s Environment, Economy and Energy, accepted $2.1 million in seed money from seven industry companies in recent weeks, including oil and gas goliaths Noble Energy Inc. and Anadarko Petroleum Corp. Each provided $500,000 as of April 30, according to filings with the Colorado Secretary of State.

Economy and Energy aims to “support state and local ballot initiatives promoting responsible oil and gas development and oppose state and local ballot initiatives attempting to limit or ban oil and gas development, including any ban or restrictions on hydraulic fracturing.”

Catherine Collentine, Colorado campaign representative for the Sierra Club’s Keep Dirty Fuels in the Ground Initiative, says the millions of dollars that oil and gas developers are already spending to sway voters “make the eyes widen.”

“I think it certainly means that they have a vested interest in continuing to expand their operations here in the state of Colorado,” Collentine says.

about fracking, ultimately they are running a business and they have a financial stake in the outcome.”

Protecting Colorado’s Environment, Economy and Energy is already scheduling ads for television, contracting, for instance, with KMGH-Channel 7 to air more than $360,000 worth of ads this summer and another $519,000 worth of ads in September, October and November, according to filings with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). At least one other station is poised to air ads by the group — KDVR-Channel 31, which received a “Record of Request for Broadcast Time” from the committee.

Karen Crummy, a spokeswoman for Protecting Colorado’s Environment, Economy and Energy, declined to estimate how much the committee will ultimately invest in ads and its broader campaign in the coming months. She did say the group is serious about its efforts.

“Obviously we’ll do what we have to to get the word out on the impact this would have on the state,” Crummy says.

Noble and Anadarko are also behind another group, a nonprofit called Coloradans for Responsible Energy Development, or CRED, with a “core mission” to “deliver solid facts directly to the people who need it most: you. As industry leaders, Anadarko and Noble are among the most technically qualified to explain the practice of hydraulic fracturing to Coloradans.”

Critics of the industry’s efforts estimate that CRED has already spent between $2.4 and $4 million on profracking advertising so far this year and the biggest spending months won’t hit until fall.

Last year, CRED spent big money on local television ads, according to FCC filings.

This year, the group is paying for an advertising supplement section in The Denver Post called “Energy and Environment” that mimics the appearance of objective news. The section includes articles with headlines such as “Statewide fracking ban could hobble local economies” and “If you watch baseball, you support oil and natural gas.”

The oil and gas industry is on the political offensive in the wake of recent bans and moratoria in several cities.

Boulder voters last year extended a moratorium on fracking until 2018.

lawsuits by the Colorado Oil and Gas Association, a trade group that “aggressively promotes the expansion” of the industry. The association has argued that state regulations supersede local bans as some 20 groups are now seeking approval for a variety of November initiatives ranging from restrictions to bans.

The key issue is whether localities and voters can regulate or ban fracking operations in their communities, says Rick Ridder of RBI Strategies & Research. Ridder serves as a consultant to Coloradans for Local Control and an issues group, Coloradans for Safe and Clean Energy. The groups support efforts to “allow communities to have some control over fracking within their communities,” Ridder says.

That includes bans, but also limits, such as restrictions on how close oil and gas operations can be to schools, homes and hospitals.

“Increasingly we’re finding our kids’ playgrounds to be 500 feet or less from drilling pads that are spewing forth diesel fumes, leak toxic chemicals and ultimately end up in our groundwater,” Ridder says. “So we’re talking about the health of Coloradans — not just of Coloradans, but of Colorado.”

U.S. Rep. Jared Polis, a Boulder Democrat, is one of several backers, Ridder says.

Ridder says the group will be mounting a visible media campaign.

“We anticipate that we will have enough money to run a very vigorous campaign to communicate to the voters of Colorado the benefits of local control and expanding setbacks,” Ridder says.

FCC filings show Coloradans for Safe and Clean Energy has already reserved more than $226,700 in ads with KUSA-Channel 9 and has filed a “Request for Broadcast Time” with KCNC-Channel 4.

On the other side is yet another group: the long-standing Coloradans for Responsible Reform, which is raising funds from interests outside the industry to defend oil and gas.

Secretary of State filings show the group reaped $770,000 from an array of contributors, including FirstBank, Climax Molybdenum Co., Natural Soda Inc. and Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Colorado. Each gave $25,000, according election records, money that will go toward combating “anti-business initiatives,” including those that “aim to ban oil and gas operations,” according to the group. The group also boasts some familiar civic names, including Kelly Brough, the president of the Denver Metro Boulder Weekly

Much of the pressure has been focused on public officials thus far, particularly state lawmakers who have struggled to reach a compromise that would avert an election confrontation between the energy industry and localcontrol advocates. With the 2014 legislative session over, Gov. John Hickenlooper reportedly has given 50/50 odds that a special session could be called.

Noble/Anadarko’s nonprofit, CRED, is also targeting lawmakers. An open letter printed in CRED’s Denver Post insert implores Colorado’s elected officials to oppose more regulations on the oil and gas industry because the state “already has the most comprehensive and stringent oil and gas regulations in the nation.”

“As we approach another election season, there may be attempts at the ballot box to change the way Colorado currently regulates the oil and gas industry,” the letter adds. “Rumors abound as to whether an initiative will attempt to ban development processes, like fracking, or turn our state into a confusing patchwork of inconsistency by transferring regulation of the industry to hundreds of local governments.”

Yet environmental groups have consistently questioned whether the state’s regulations on the industry are protective enough, particularly as a growing body of research sounds alarms. The latest example is a report this month by the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that found that oil and gas operations along the Front Range are emitting significantly higher amounts of air pollution than state data indicates. The Boulder-based Boulder Weekly

NOAA researchers concluded that emissions of benzene, a toxic carcinogen strictly regulated by federal law, were seven times higher than the state’s own data, which is self reported by the oil and gas industry. Volatile organic compounds that create “brown cloud” smog were twice as high — more than 13 tons per hour — only adding to concerns about Front Range pollution.

Since 2007, the region has been out of compliance with the federal Environmental Protection Agency’s health-protecting eight-hour ozone standard.

Collentine with the Sierra Club says the oil and gas industry’s efforts to portray itself as authoritative and using green terms like “environment” in their campaigns begs some questions: “‘What is fracking? What is the quote-unquote truth about fracking?’ to use one of the lines that they have used in a lot of their materials,” she says. “People don’t feel safe in these communities where fracking is occurring or in these communities where fracking could occur. They know that air travels statewide; that if it is happening in their neighbor’s backyard, it could happen in theirs, and that’s concerning to people.

So until folks in our local communities can look around and say, ‘I feel comfortable living here; I feel safe living here’ and that’s not in conflict with our energy development in this state, I think there is still a lot more to be done.”

Local control groups, she adds, may in the end be outspent by the oil and gas industry. She notes, however, it’s not just money that wins on Election Day, as voters in cities that have passed bans or moratoria discovered.

“I think no matter what the dollar amounts are that come to light, it’s not going to change the fact that when people are concerned about their air and their water and their family and their community, they won’t stop until they feel like they are safe,” Collentine says.

ike many Colorado skiers, the state’s native lynx must also have enjoyed this past winter.

Cruising along on their huge, tufted paws, the wild cats come into their own when the snow piles up soft and deep in high country spruce and fir forests.

Hiding out beneath dense overhangs of evergreen boughs during the day, then emerging at dawn or dusk to hunt, the threatened predators have made a huge comeback in the state, and they’re holding their own — but the job isn’t done yet, according to conservation advocates who want the federal government to designate critical habitat for the species.

But overall, the huge controversy sparked by the original 1999 endangered listing decision and simultaneous reintroduction program in Colorado has faded.

If you’ve live in Colorado for more than 15 years you may remember the bitter battle over Vail Ski Area’s

Blue Sky Basin (then called Category 3) expansion, as conservation advocates sought to prevent the resort from building lifts in what, at the time, was deemed to be one of the last best areas of lynx habitat in central Colorado. The fight culminated when some outof-state environmental extremists torched lodges and lifts at Vail in a dangerous arson attack that didn’t help lynx a single bit.

It turns out that the cats have managed to reclaim some habitat around Vail, including Vail Pass, which remains a crucial corridor for lynx moving into new territories.

Most recently, wildlife biologists estimate that there are probably a couple of hundred lynx living in Colorado, mostly concentrated in the San Juans, but with strong population pockets in other areas, including around Summit County and Vail, as well as Aspen, and even as far north as Rocky Mountain

National Park.

The cats that were brought in from Canada and Alaska in the early 2000s quickly started breeding and since then, several generations of native-born lynx have been carving out their own territories in the mountains of Colorado. But since state biologists stopped monitoring the cats via expensive electronic tracking gear, they really don’t have a solid handle on exactly how many of the cats survive each year and how many kittens are born each spring.

ew Orleans’ Lake Pontchartrain is only 12 feet deep. But that’s deep enough to drown. And you can drown there — that is, if the alligators don’t get to you first. And if the alligators do get you, you won’t have to worry about a coffin. The scraps of your flesh that they leave behind will be eaten by the bull sharks and the alligator gar: ugly prehistoric looking fish with massive jaws full of spiny teeth.

The gar, the alligators and the sharks provide a grim backdrop to Boulder resident Matthew Moseley’s attempt to become the first person to solo swim across the Lake Pontchartrain. But he’s

worried about none of that.

“The wind chop is the hardest thing,” admits Moseley, who is no stranger to Pontchartrain, having braved the lake several times over the past few years as a swimmer in several relay events, including a 2012 effort that saw him and his partner, Glynde Mangum, swim 29 miles across the lake in just over 12 hours.

That successful crossing, along with a prior effort in 2007, were done to raise funds to rebuild the New Canal Lighthouse which was damaged

hen Krewella first started talking about signing to major label Columbia Records, the group left no room for confusion on its demand for creative control over its music.

“That was a huge priority,” says Yasmine Yousaf, one of Krewella’s two singers. “When we signed to Columbia, it was one of the first things we said. It was like ‘Guys, we’re really headstrong. We’re kind of the assholes if you want to take the creative shit away from us. We are completely in control, and that’s that. We put our foot down. And they’ve been so respectful. They didn’t even think of stepping on our toes. They were like ‘Guys, you do your thing and we just back you. You have our full support.’”

That kind of independent streak has shown up throughout Krewella’s career in much of what the trio from Chicago has done, from how they’ve made their EPs and albums to how they’ve carved their own stylistic path, to how the group plans to change the typical electronic music game as a live act.

Canadian rappers Swollen Members turn over a new leaf on new album

Over the past 15 years, the Vancouver-based group has garnered widespread praise in the underground rap scene and experienced some mainstream success, even winning four Juno Awards, the Canadian equivalent of the Grammy.

‘Dancing in Jaffa’ tries to heal the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through dance

S

ince 1994, Pierre Dulaine, subject of the 2013 documentary Dancing in Jaffa, has run a program called Dancing Classrooms, which teaches fifth graders the fundamentals of ballroom dance. The program teaches more than just footwork, it teaches the students elegance, manners, good posture and most important, Dulaine feels that Dancing Classrooms teaches children civility. For Dancing in Jaffa, Dulaine invited a camera crew along to test just how effective Dancing Classrooms is at teaching civility by taking the New York City based program to one of the biggest tinderboxes in the world: Dulaine’s hometown of Jaffa, Israel.

Dulaine knows at the outset of the film that teaching dancing in a culture where some men elect not to touch women all together will be difficult, but he is a man on a mission. Dulaine is no stranger to the customs or the IsraelPalestine conflict, and claims to come with no political agenda, just a desire to teach dancing. That opens more doors than you might think and it allows Dulaine to smuggle in lessons of kindness, trust and connection. Dulaine knows that if he can get these kids to look each other in the eye, hold each

other’s hand and accomplish something together, then there is hope for the future.

But as with all good stories, it’s not that simple.

The fight between Israel and Palestine has been dragging on since 1948, and does not seem to be letting up anytime soon. The current generation will always influence the following, and you can see it in some of Dulaine’s students.

The documentary ends with a competition. Students are selected from each school to dance in front of their parents and teachers. The children are understandably nervous and Dulaine is understandably excited. Trophies are handed out, prizes are awarded to the winning school, but pay attention to the losing schools. They do not throw fits of entitlement. They do not walk off the court with their heads hung in shame. They do not rip off their colored sashes in distress. They dance.

Dancing may not solve the problems that the future generations of Israel and Palestine face, but it’s a start.

Dancing in Jaffa will play at The Dairy Center for the Arts from May 14th to the 17th. For those interested in learning more, Kathryn Bernheimer (author of The Fifty Greatest Jewish Movies) will host a talkback after Thursday’s show.

‘Neighbors’ is hilarious-ish

et’s start with something that’s apparently really, really hard for edgy comedy people to grasp: jokes about rape or the N-word suck, and you suck for using them. Yes, you are allowed to make them; they aren’t illegal or anything. But saying “nothing is off-limits in comedy” makes you sound like a pretentious wang who thinks humor is some kind of miracle drug.

Laughter isn’t literally “the best medicine,” so until rape or race jokes cure cancer, feel free to knock it off, jagwagons.

To recap: If you want to be edgy, feel free to wrap a huge human dong around someone’s neck like a necklace or show frat boys making dildos out of their own members, both of which are featured in the wholesome R-rated comedy Neighbors. But do not have generally likable white comedian Ike Barinholtz use rape as a punchline and drop two N-bombs (one of them while doing a President Obama impression).

Don’t worry; these three jokes do not form the entire basis of my reaction to the film, which is generally pretty funny, even if it is a cut below much of this group’s last outing, This is the End. I’ve just had it with the national dialogue on whether certain things are funny. They’re not, and you’re stupid if you think so.

It probably seems like that was a lot of time spent on one tiny aspect of Neighbors, but there’s really not much going on here. Mac (Seth Rogen) and Kelly (Rose Byrne) are new parents who square off against the frat that moves in next door, led by Teddy (Zac Efron) and Pete (Dave Franco). While Boulder Weekly

the couple initially tries to be cool and cling to their youth, engaging in hallucinogenic shenanigans before reminding the youngsters to “keep it down,” they quickly begin assaulting one another with increasingly immoral actions. Oh, and there is a killer lactation scene.

The funniest part of watching Rogen play a man-child finally forced to grow up is realizing that he probably only has a few years left during which he can play an underachieving stoner before that character goes from comedic to tragic. Watching him and Byrne run full-speed into the brick wall of uncoolness that awaits all of us is an interesting comedic viewpoint rarely explored.

Also refreshing is Efron’s willingness to go “full A-hole.” His drunken self-entitlement and loose grasp on reality evokes images of real-life spoiled young celebrities, who will remain nameless until Rogen calls them names on the Howard Stern show.

The problem with Neighbors is that it isn’t quite as funny as it needs to be to buoy such a simplistic premise. The supporting cast is fairly horrid, including Barinholtz in specific, and the tone shifts too often between realistic and ridiculous. Still, Byrne is a show-stealing riot, and the whole debacle is funny enough to count as light, giggly summer fluff. Hopefully, the next time Rogen and his regulars get together, they’ll pack more pound-for-pound laughs, ditch the faux-edgy tasteless quips and keep all the other raunch they want.

Rising CO2 levels to cut key nutrients in global crops Study pinpoints impacts of greenhouse gases to key food crops

Climate change will reduce the number of chilly winter days that many fruit trees need to produce.

N

ew research studying 41 strains of six different crops on three continents that was published May 7 in the scientific journal, Nature, shows that as concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide increase, the nutritional content of key food crops will drop, exacerbating hunger woes for millions of people worldwide. In some crops, concentrations of nutrients could drop by as much as 10 percent when CO2 levels rise to 500 parts per million by mid-century.

Harvard University public health researcher Samuel Myers says that the new research once and for all resolves questions about the impacts of CO2 on major food crops.

“Already, two billion people are suffering from zinc and iron deficiencies.

That equals 63 million life years lost,”

Myers says, explaining that the grains most affected by increased greenhouse gas emissions are exactly the ones that provide those nutrients.

“This is a huge public health problem today ... These are grains and legumes that people rely on for nutrition,” he says.

“Humanity is conducting a global experiment by rapidly altering the environmental conditions on the only habitable planet we know. As this experiment unfolds, there will undoubtedly be many surprises. Finding out that rising CO2 threatens human nutrition is one such surprise,” he says.

“There’s no debate about what’s happening to CO2 — it will continue to rise up to 550 ppm sometime in the next 40 years. Whether you believe in the greenhouse effect or not, this is the reality of what’s going to happen,” he

says, urging food policy experts to calculate the findings into their equations for trying to feed the world.

Previous studies had shown similar effects, but were partly dismissed because they were conducted in greenhouses rather than in the open air. The new study used breakthrough technology that enables crops to be grown outdoors under simulated high CO2 conditions in 10- to 15-foot diameter circles, ringed by carbon dioxide emitting jets and wind and CO2 sensor in the center.

After studying a wide variety of crops around the world and in different growing seasons, Myers says there is little doubt about the results, calling on agricultural researchers to try and develop crop strains that can thrive under conditions expected mid-century.

Frumkin was not involved directly with the new CO2 study, but authored the health section of the National Climate Assessment released last week.

“In the big picture, looking at all the health impacts of climate change, the food impacts will be one of the biggest over time,” Frumkin says. “There has been a lot of focus on heatwaves and wildfires,” he continues, acknowledging that those events can affect thousands or even tens of thousands of people.

“With a heavy heart and distinctly mixed emotions, I must report that effective immediately, the restaurant is closed permanently,” co-owner Sara Casarrubias wrote in an email on May 7. “Thank you all for your support over the years.”

No word yet on what will become of Trattoria on Pearl’s trattoria space on Pearl St.

side from its distinctive flavor palettes, food has more abstract emotional appeals to the senses as well. Dessert tastes like joy. A giant chunk of meat roasted over an open flame tastes deeply, primally, invigorating, like surviving a plane crash or the thrill of the hunt itself. There’s a reason mashed potatoes are called “comfort food.”

The grub at Fresh Thymes Eatery tastes healthy, like tiny, delicate chunks of life. Perhaps that’s a bit hyperbolic. But it’s still the general thrust that one is getting at with clichés like fresh and zesty, that it taps into some evolutionarily honed survival sense that says, “Put this in your mouth; it’s the opposite of poison.”

The lunch counter that runs lengthways through most of the space is loaded up with a deli-style rotating daily selection of salads and meats, made with high-quality ingredients and prepared in ways that subtly highlight their natural flavors instead of drowning them in spices. A slaw made of carrots and daikon dressed in a light sesame oil was a crunchy delight, and a lightly roasted asparagus walked a line between tender and crunchy, and avoided the heavy blahness that can come with a chef phoning in their asparagus duties.

Though the salads I sampled with my counter plate (one protein and two sides for $12) were not specifically adherent to the raw foods diet, their understated

preparation expressed its appeal. Were carrot sticks and kale the world around that effervescent and lively, I might consider ditching my hot plate.

But that impulse could also go the other way from tasting the tender strips of braised skirt steak that came with those salads. It was prepared with the same nuance, and managed to capture that same wholesome emotional vibe despite steak’s origins being decidedly more savage than carrots’. If that’s the flavor that comes from gently applying fire to a cow’s tuccus, then I’m ready to swear allegiance to Prometheus.

Fresh Thymes likes to tout that its menu is entirely gluten-free, which is especially nice as it still manages to offer some gluteny standards like flatbreads, sandwiches and pasta, especially when you got away from the lunch counter and into the fixed menu.

The burger is made with grass-fed beef and dressed up with avocado and caramelized onions for $12.50. The Big Mac (adult-sized mac and cheese, $8) is a gooey delight that can be augmented with a rogue’s gallery of accoutrements for an extra $1: roasted tomatoes, house pesto, wild mushrooms, caramelized onions, seared greens, green chili sauce, skirt steak, roasted chicken or bacon.

But even those heavier items manage to capture the airiness that is endemic to the rest of the menu.

Fresh Thymes Eatery rounds its offerings out with a few baked desserts.

The Magic Bar (a piece of shortbread layered with caramel for $3.50) was especially good.

While the prices at Fresh Thymes Eatery are a little too high for a regular lunch spot on a reporter’s salary, it’s going down in my little black book as a joint for those days when you’re overcome by that “not so fresh feeling,” and damnit, you just need a truly stellar carrot.

Dear Dan: I’m a 21-year-old straight male, and I’m mildly autistic. This means that I have difficulty picking up on social cues. I’ve learned to manage my disability in most areas of my life, but I’ve recently become concerned about how it pertains to hooking up. My approach to hooking up is how I imagine most other people’s must be: find someone who I can have a flowing conversation with, attempt to flirt with them, and then awkwardly make a move.

But a few weeks ago at a party, I was flirting with a girl when I suddenly realized that she was wasted. I had suspected that she was tipsy like myself, but I didn’t understand how far gone she was until she invited me outside and was unable to keep her balance while walking.

What followed was a horrifyingly surreal exchange where I struggled to leave, she kept insisting that she wasn’t drunk, and all the while she kept pressing against me.

By the time I got away, she was angry, people were staring, and I had history’s most shameful erection. Prior to that night, I thought I could tell when someone was too drunk. I’d been certain about the agency of everyone I slept with. Now I have doubts about myself. Severe intoxication renders a person incapable of giving consent, and taking advantage of someone that impaired is the same as rape in my mind. Am I a rapist? Was it wrong for me to participate in hookup culture as I struggle to read social signals?

You say you have difficulty picking up on social cues, and you’re now worried that you may have misread a previous hookup’s ability to consent. I’m sorry to say that it’s possible you hooked up with a girl who was completely shitfaced but, unlike that drunk girl at the party, was not giving off too-shitfaced-to-consent cues. Since you can’t go back in time and unfuck all the buzzed/tipsy/drunk girls with whom you’ve already hooked up, MBSOD, you can only resolve to be more cautious going forward.

If drunkenness is one of those social cues that you have a hard time reading, MBSOD, you’re going to ask a friend for his or her read on the girl you met, or — better still — you’re going to stick to dance-floor make-out sessions at parties and reserve getting naked for sober/soberer second or third dates. And when you do decide to really go for it, you’re going to err on the side of making active, ongoing, explicit requests for consent, i.e., you’re not going to “make moves,” awkward or otherwise, you’re going ask questions (“I’d really like to kiss you — that okay?”) and keep asking questions (“Okay, I got the condoms out — you still wanna fuck?”).

He’s out on the road talking with people involved in all sides of the industry — farmers, economists, capitalists — asking the tough questions of everyone he meets about hemp’s curious path to acceptance again after 70 years with the lights out.

Along the way he confronts hemp’s massive potential and the forces still in play that have kept its possibilities hidden since the 1930s in America, and put the country a few decades behind the rest of the world in hemp production. It’s a plant that works well as a rotational crop, something farmers are always looking for, and it has deep roots and doesn’t require pesticides.

He discusses “dual cropping,” the concept of creating a seed harvest and a fiber harvest. He visits a Canadian non-profit that has developed a hood for a tractor made of a hemp composite, and he talks with builders who are using hempcrete, a mixture of hemp pulp and lime that is being used in construction and as an alternative insulation material in homes and buildings.

It won’t be easy, but things are looking up. Out on the plains east of Denver, Fine comes across a scene that shows why hemp and cannabis legalization will ultimately succeed. On July 4 last year, a day he chose carefully, fifth-generation conservative and farmer Michael Bowman, of Byers, Colorado, held a ceremonial planting of European hemp. Bowman’s family has grown corn for decades in an area that has been decimated by recent droughts, an area where many actively seek to secede from the state. Bowman cast his actions in strict, patriotic terms.

“Our own Independence Day two and a quarter centuries ago started with a shot,” Bowman said.

“We are the leaders in Colorado on this issue. We know we need to make a transition to a new farming mind-set, in order to make a real difference for our grandchildren. That’s our ammo — planting hemp in a GMO cornfield.”
