Highroad Obama’s bizarre sales pitch for TPP

ometimes you get offered “a deal you can’t refuse.” Then there’s the deal that Barack Obama has offered to congressional Democrats.

For some bizarre reason, Obama is staking his presidential legacy on a trade scam called the Trans-Pacific Partnership. It’s a corporate wet dream that would let profiteering giants in Japan, Vietnam, Brunei and eight other

Pacific nations sue to overturn our national, state and even local laws that they claim might pinch their profits.

These challenges would not be filed in our courts of law, but in private, corporate-run tribunals set up by the UN and the World Bank.

Unsurprisingly, the great majority of House and Senate Democrats are saying “Hell no” to such a power grab. So the President, who is famously disinclined to do the sweaty work of rounding up votes for progressive legislation, invited 30 wary-but-wavering Democratic lawmakers to the White House to make a two-hour personal plea for support of this honker. Vote with me on this highly unpopular giveaway of the people’s sovereignty, he told them, and I will personally come campaign for you if your vote prompts a real Democrat to oppose you in the 2016 primary election.

against the people by increasing corporate power. Then, the very President who led this highly-unpopular effort will come tell your constituents what a fine public servant you are for voting to impose foreign corporate power over them. Good grief, why not just have the corporate chieftains themselves come thank you for selling out to them?

Apparently, Obama has thought of that, too — the week after his plea to Democratic lawmakers, he flew all the way across the country to Beaverton, Oregon to the headquarters of Nike, the champion of offshoring American jobs, to promote its endorsement of his bad TPP deal.

he campaign to pass the Danish Plan began in August 1976 with a panicked phone call to me from Councilwoman and future Mayor Ruth Correll. She wanted to know why the Danish Plan (officially called the Slow Growth ordinance) didn’t exempt affordable housing from its growth limits. I told her it was because I had given a draft of the plan to Boulder Housing Authority Director John Hoyer months ago and asked him for his input. He didn’t offer any.

He hadn’t bothered reading it, of course. You have to exempt affordable housing, she said.

The petition drive was scheduled to kick off that evening.

We had 200 petitions printed and ready to hand out to dozens of volunteer circulators. Adding language exempting affordable housing would require revising and reprinting the petition and delay the petition drive by about a week. And we were already cutting it close if we were going to make it onto the November 1976 ballot. I went ballistic, of course.

You have to do something about affordable housing, she said adamantly after I stopped venting. Let me think about it, I said. I’ll call you back.

She was right, of course. We did have to do something. It was already obvious that in order to pass the ordinance we were going to have to fight it out with the business community. If the affordable housing advocates came out against it as well, it would most likely lose.

But what to do? A blanket exemption for “affordable housing” (whatever that meant) would gut the ordinance.

I called her back and told her we would add a single sentence exempting the projects of the Boulder Housing

Authority.

She was relieved and mollified.

The episode did indeed set us back a week. But the affordable housing advocates stayed neutral.

Even so, the petition drive was a terrific success. We collected something like 5,300 signatures in about 27 days, about 800 more than we needed to appear on the ballot during the highturnout 1976 Presidential election (Carter vs. Ford).

Within a week of getting on the ballot, the first anti-Slow Growth ads appeared.

This is the point where the supporters of ballot initiatives often make a fatal mistake: They assume that because they have succeeded in putting their issue on the ballot their work is done.

The truth is it is just beginning. If you think the job is done when you hand in your petitions, on Election Day you will be handed your head.

If you don’t put as much effort and passion into fund-raising, getting out your message, mobilizing your voters and countering attacks as you did collecting signatures, you will have wasted your time in petitioning your proposal onto the ballot in the first place.

While we had been petitioning, the opposition had been organizing.

Four separate political action committees sprang up to fight the Slow Growth initiative, led by the Chamber of Commerce and the Board of Realtors. Together they raised and spent more than $15,000 (more than $61,000 in today’s dollars), a breath-taking sum for a local election at the time.

Fortunately, we had a pretty good idea what was coming. As soon as the petition went into the field we started our own fund-raising and kept it up

hese pages have written extensively over the past several months about an important topic: trade. Numerous commentaries and letters of varying levels of veracity have been printed. Unfortunately, while I admire the persistence and attention paid to this topic, the facts have often meandered from the truth.

First off, let’s get one thing straight — any one that has followed my political and business career knows that I am supportive of freer and fairer trade and the benefits it brings to hundreds of thousands of small businesses and workers across the country, including thousands in our own backyard — places like Lightning Eliminators in Boulder, which helps protect buildings from lightning, Shotcrete Technologies in Idaho Springs which makes high-speed nozzles for concrete applications, Pro’s Closet biking supplies in Boulder and Keeton Industries in Wellington which makes probiotics for fish.

It’s simply not fair that products produced in Japan see an average tariff of just 2 to 3 percent when coming into the U.S., yet products like cheese produced in Colorado see Japanese tariffs as high as 600 percent.

Another thing we should get straight: despite my support of freer and fairer trade, I have never supported

granting the President so-called carte blanche “fast-track” authority. “Fast Track” authority was the way in which old trade deals were negotiated, and unfortunately, it allowed flawed trade deals to get through Congress. The last version of “fast track” was negotiated in 2014 by centrist Democrat Senator Max Baucus of Montana and died with the end of the 113th Congress.

Recently, a new type of authority was negotiated and released. It was negotiated and co-authored by liberal Democratic Senator Ron Wyden, of Oregon. It’s different from the previous “fast-track” in significant ways. I call it “smart track” because it’s a smarter approach to trade. President Obama is calling it a “deliberate track.”

The point is that this new trade authority — whatever you call it — mandates that any trade agreement must be fully public for 60 days before the President signs it, which is before the deal is sent to Congress for debate (and we all know how quickly Congress moves). This means any trade agreement will be public and available in full, online, for months before Congress votes. There’s nothing fast about that timeline.

to “turn off ” bad trade deals: if members believe that the negotiated trade agreement is not consistent with the trade objectives and guidelines we gave to the President, or they do not believe the President consulted with Congress in the prescribed manner, then Congress can force a “disapproval vote,” putting the brakes on the trade agreement. This “off switch” was not in the “fast-track” proposal either.

But Smart Track doesn’t just set transparency guidelines and provide an “off switch.” What Smart Track does is provide a formal mechanism for Congress to weigh in on what our trade agreements look like. In this version, Congress says that any trade agreement that the President puts before Congress must have enforceable labor, environmental and human rights at its core — not a side agreement as it was with NAFTA. If this President, or the President that follows, presents a deal to Congress that doesn’t meet these guidelines, it won’t become law. That’s what “smart track” ensures.

So while I don’t doubt Joel Dyer’s math in a previous column, where he stated that only 4 percent of text language has changed from previous versions of TPA, everything that is important to both me and my constituents is in that 4 percent. These concerns characterize over 90 percent of the correspondence I’ve received on this issue.

Another concern I want to address head-on, and which these editorial pages have written on at length, is a component of the trade authority language that deals with sovereignty. In particular, many of my constituents are concerned that future trade deals could potentially undermine local control over laws that regulate public health, the environment, and even fracking. Any trade agreement that did any of those things would garner my staunch opposition.

Let me be clear, because this is an issue that is incredibly important to me: I have received personal assurances from President Obama and his administration that no trade deal can undermine federal law, state law, local law or our national sovereignty.

But assurances are not enough. This is why Smart Track includes language clarifying binding the President, in no uncertain terms, that trade deals cannot undermine local laws: SEC. 8. SOVEREIGNTY. 2 (a) UNITED STATES LAW TO PREVAIL IN EVENT OF 3 CONFLICT.—No provision of any trade agreement entered 4 into under section 3(b), nor the application of any such

5 provision to any person or circumstance, that is incon6 sistent with any law of the United States, any State of 7 the United States, or any locality of the United States 8 shall have effect.

When it comes to legislative language, it simply doesn’t get any more clear and direct.

In addition to the explicit assurance that the treaty won’t override any laws in our country, I also wanted certainty that no additional rights were given to any international corporations, referred to here as “foreign investors” (investing in U.S. operations): “Foreign investors in the United States are not accorded greater substantive rights with respect to investment protections than United States investors in the United States…”

Thus for some of the very same reasons I did not support fast tracks, I’m supportive of the Smart Tracks TPA legislation introduced last month. It sets very clear, direct and enforceable guidelines for the President to engage in trade negotiations with other countries.

From accessible health care to clean energy to minimum wage increases to job training programs to affordable higher education, President Obama has consistently been a champion for working families since he entered the White House six years ago. As Obama said last week, speaking to a crowd in Oregon about his trade agenda, “we can’t stand on the beaches and stop the global economy at our shores. We’ve got to harness it on our terms.” I’m doing everything I can to make sure we’re harnessing the 21st century global economy in a way that benefits Colorado and protects our environment and human rights.

I believe in the power of America to do good in the world. If President Obama can accomplish what he is setting out to do with TPP and what we are directing him to do in the Smart Tracks — protecting fisheries and wildlife, banning child labor, protecting habitats, fighting piracy and theft of intellectual property, ensuring a free and open internet and increasing market access for made-in-America products in Japan and other nations — then count me in!

One in six is bad odds

Thanks to the Weekly for continuing coverage of environmental issues, particularly some local ones that we might not otherwise hear about. I also appreciate coverage of global issues, particularly climate change. The Weekly recently covered a study suggesting that one of six species will disappear due to global warming and a call by local researchers for increased attention to the influence of change in high mountain regions [Re: “Study says global warming will cause one in six species to go extinct,” Eco-Briefs, May 7]. A recent NASA report projects that as global warming progresses, we in the West may be in for “mega-droughts” much worse than the one currently plaguing California.

The Weekly also covers a range of sustainability actions that can form part of a response to the threat of climate change. I’d like to cut to the chase and suggest a practical path to a more comprehensive national approach.

The policy, as proposed by Citizens’ Climate Lobby, includes three parts: A gradually increasing carbon fee, imposed at the point of extraction or import of fossil fuels, provides a price signal to the economy, enabling businesses and consumers to adjust gradually and unleashes American ingenuity to devise better low-carbon technologies. Second, the revenues from the fee are fully refunded to U.S. citizens through equitable monthly rebates. The rebates keep the money in the U.S. economy and compensate consumers for prices that increase in response to the carbon fee.

tionally and encourage other countries to enact similar climate policies.

The good news about this policy is that it does not cripple the economy or kill jobs. On the contrary, a detailed economic study by Regional Economic Modeling, Inc. projects that while lowering U.S. carbon emissions by half, the policy actually increases GDP slightly, and creates 2.8 million more jobs than a business-as-usual scenario. Even if we’re unsure about the impacts and urgency of global warming, this approach provides cheap insurance.

Could we be the one in six species to go extinct at the hand of climate change? Your article [Re: “Study says global warming will cause one in six species to go extinct,” Eco-Briefs, May 7] that referenced a new study published in the journal “science” claims one in six existing species will go extinct if the global temperature continues to increase at the current rate.

Maybe that’s exactly what we need to have happen. If we were told that humans would become extinct if we didn’t address climate change then maybe we’d move off the dime. We humans seem to need a catastrophe in order to take action. The work done by Mark C. Urban of the University of Connecticut comes just months before nearly 200 governments meet in Paris for UN climate talks aimed at forming a global deal to cut carbon emissions.

Now is the time for concerned citizens to contact Senators Michael Bennet and Cory Gardner and let them know that you want them to support or introduce legislation that will put a steadily-rising fee on carbon-based fuels at their source and then return those revenues to households to offset higher energy costs.

Citizens’ Climate Lobby is carrying out a nonpartisan movement to make members of Congress aware of a researched study (REMI) showing that a fee and dividend approach could reduce carbon emissions and produce jobs in the coming decades.

Let our species exist so others can.

Let’s look for those solutions that do not further polarize our Congress and the American people. We must help our legislators to reach across the aisle to make decisions that will benefit all of us.

news briefs Latino Chamber of Boulder opens first office After 13 years serving Latino-owned and operated businesses in Boulder County, the Latino Chamber of Commerce of Boulder County opens it’s first dedicated office space in downtown Longmont on Saturday, May 16.

The new building, located at 332 Main St., is 650 square feet, and was made possible through a membership drive over the past two years, as well as support from the cities of Boulder County and the county itself.

Jose Beteta, president of Boulder’s Latino Chamber, says the facility will be able to host up to 30-35 people for classes or meetings.

“But it’s also going to be a dynamic work space, meeting space and a place of resource for the whole community,” says Beteta. “We’re happy because we’re going to be hosting not only our events there, but opening space to other organizations to host events, and especially nonprofits that could use a hand.”

Beteta says that during the first week of June, the Chamber will be part of Longmont Startup Week.

“So that whole week we are going to be hosting at least eight workshops for the community dealing with different business themes, entrepreneurial themes, success stories from underrepresented business persons and women,” Beteta says.

Obama approves Shell to drill in the Arctic After years of fighting for the right to drill in the Arctic — and a record of bungled operations — Shell got a nod of approval from the Obama administration to start drilling for oil and gas in the Arctic Ocean this summer.

“Instead of holding Shell accountable and moving the country towards a sustainable future, our federal regulators are catering to an ill-prepared company in a region that does not tolerate cutting corners,” said Tim Donaghy, Greenpeace senior research specialist, to EcoWatch.

This isn’t the first time Shell has been given the go-ahead. In a review of Shell’s 2012 Arctic operations, the Department of the Interior concluded that Shell had failed in a wide range of basic operational tasks, such as testing critical systems.

According to the report, “Likewise, additional problems encountered by Shell — including significant violations identified during United States Coast Guard’s (USCG) inspection of the Noble Discoverer drilling rig in Seward last November, the lost tow and grounding of the Kulluk rig near Kodiak Island in late December, and violations of air emission permits issued by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) — also indicate serious deficiencies in Shell’s management of contractors, as well as its oversight and execution of operations in the extreme and unpredictable conditions offshore of Alaska.”

If passed, two ballot initiatives will amend city charter and alter development

here are petitions circling in Boulder right now that, if they get enough signatures, will put on the November ballot two initiatives that amend the city charter and change the way we handle future development in the city.

One ballot initiative would give individual neighborhoods the opportunity to vote on any land use changes in their area. The other initiative tacks on recuperative expenses to future development projects. The potential ramifications if either amendment passes have kindled a debate between advocacy groups, the city and developers.

Oddly, or maybe not, parties on either side of the line seem to either support both issues or oppose both. On one side is the group that initiated the ballot measures, Livable Boulder, which is made up of residents, former council members and city workers, and local policy buffs. On the other side are groups with a vested interest in development, like the Chamber of Commerce, Better Boulder and some members of City Council.

That would include, as it states in the amendment, tracking travel times in Boulder during morning and evening rush hours. If the travel time increases, a developer will pay a fee — how they’ll pay, how much they’ll pay and where those funds will go is still unclear.

“That sort of still has to be defined,” Haydel says. “It’s sort of like the linkage fee goes to affordable housing; part of this would go to affordable housing, part of it would go to public services.”

Haydel says that the linkage fee council is planning to pass is based on 2009 numbers, which he says are already out of date and inadequate, thus reinforcing his case for the group’s initiative.

Of the two measures, “Development Shall Pay its Own Way,” is in rougher, vaguer shape. Kathy Haddock, senior assistant city attorney, recently returned a list of recommendations on Livable Boulder’s initiatives, though the group is not required to make those changes.

Haddock’s recommendations included figuring out what the terms “fully pay” and “fully offset” mean. Can, for instance, a fire station be constructed in an area where response times are lowered because of new development, thus “fully offsetting” the added burden? Another question posed was how long do impact measurements from development need to be done?

Boulder Planning Department Deputy Director Susan Richstone says the path the city is currently on will better assess and charge developers than the charter amendment. This measure, she says, will add more complications to what the city is already trying to accomplish.

“I imagine [the development amendment] will change if it goes to ballot because I had a lot of questions about how you’d actually implement it,” Richstone says. “Boulder historically has had a policy that growth should pay its own way. It sounds sort of simple but what we have done is set in place a whole series of requirements that ensures that the impacts of development are addressed. Through our land use code in terms of the review, we require a whole lot of things in terms of new development; what we call exactions. Then the next phase is because we grow, we need to make sure we have the facilities and services to do that growth.

“We have a lot of standards in place

about parks development and libraries and we have a whole series of impact fees and excise taxes that actually go towards new growth paying its fair share of capital facilities so we can build the new parks needed and expand existing libraries.”

For the record, the Boulder Chamber of Commerce agrees with Richstone saying in a statement, “The comprehensive plan update process is the appropriate venue for a discussion about how growth pays its own way.”

And Boulder Mayor Matt Appelbaum said of the issue, “I don’t think we should shut things down or raise development fees so that it effectively shuts things down.”

But the opposition from Appelbaum and others is much harsher on the other ballot initiative: “Neighborhoods’ Right to Vote on Land Use Changes.” Appelbaum called it the “Gated Community Act,” and said, “Don’t do it in a real city that’s doing its best to manage its future and do a lot of good things.”

The amendment draws lines on neighborhoods throughout the city — for example, Holiday, Wonderland Hills, Mapleton Hill, Foothills Community, Vista Village and more than 60 others — based on zoning codes, neighborhood names, developments and so on. From there, whenever a land use change is proposed by the city, the residents of that neighborhood would be able to decide whether to vote on allowing the land use change to occur or not. If 10 percent of the community wants a formal vote, an election at the city’s expense would be held.

For instance, if the city wants to change one of its residential zone plots into a commercial, industrial or other zone, the neighborhood would get to vote. That could mean a business wants to develop next to the neighborhood and needs to meet setbacks and so needs a land use change on a segment of a neighborhood. It could also mean a developer wants to buy up several lots and build one big commercial or rental property. Any construction that is proposed within current codes and zones would not be up for a vote.

Haydel says most residential areas are pretty maxed out, and so the logical conclusion is that any future development in residential areas (except for those few lots with extra space, or for renovations and rebuilds on existing residential lots) would require a land use change.

too raw to be able to comment on, but he did express concern about how many people would get to vote on proposed land use changes.

“I think the question is what’s the sphere of influence of the land use change?” Driskell says. “If we’re making a change at 30th and Pearl to the land use, how far do you draw out in terms of the impacted neighborhood that would then be voting on it?”

Appelbaum has similar concerns but points to the social ramifications of drawing neighborhood lines.

“How small they’re defining neighborhoods… there’s no greater good, or playing nice with the rest of the city. You can lower the gate and deal with yourselves, but that’s just totally inappropriate.”

To that point, Haydel says he lives in Goss Grove, “across the street from Section 8 housing, half a block [from] a halfway house, and down the street [from] Naropa.” Haydel says it’s ironic that City Council, many of whom live in single-family homes in Boulder would call his community selfish or gated.

Part of the appeal of this amendment, Haydel says, is that it protects communities 20 and 30 years down the road when development changes, markets change and city council members change. But one issue many opponents have of the amendment is that it’s unclear, at Haydel’s admission, just how many land use votes there would be every year. Driskell says in his entire tenure at the planning department, he hasn’t overseen many more than three or four major land use revisions to residential areas.

So it’s unclear, at least for now, how much these special elections run through the city would cost taxpayers.

And would some neighborhoods get fed up at having to pay for the issues of other neighborhoods?

“That could be,” Haydel says. “We have some communities right now, for example Newlands or Frasier Meadows, where I don’t see much changes planned for them but other communities do [have changes planned]. But in 10 years, who knows what the landscape is going to be?”

Some lingering questions remain about the motives of voters should these ballot initiatives make it to November. Wouldn’t most homeowners want the ability to vote on any land use changes in their neighborhood?

Wouldn’t most Boulder citizens want stricter rules for development to offset traffic costs and park access? And would we really be stifling development in town with these amendments as opponents and developers say?

“We hope … a neighborhood never has to fight a land use change,” Haydel says. “It’s more letting City Council know that neighborhoods should be engaged in the process.”

Earning that ability, by getting the initiatives on the ballot and winning

in an election, will not be easy, Haydel says. He says there are many wealthy parties interested in seeing these initiatives fail.

“There are a lot of groups with developer backed money that are going to fight [the measures],” Haydel says. “We don’t have any big backers. We’re fighting Boulder Chamber, Better Boulder… they are going to fight this, and they have money behind them.”

Also working against the group might be public perception. A recent article in the Daily Camera about the initiatives referred to the group as “Development foes,” in the headline, and Appelbaum framed all those who might be in support of the measures as “a pretty large cohort in Boulder that pretty much wants to stop all growth and development.”

What it comes down to, Haydel believes, is the rights of the community, which is trying to regain control of development and what happens in their own neighborhoods from an apathetic and self-serving council.

The group is working on the initiative’s language after receiving the city attorney’s feedback, but Livable Boulder thinks passing these measures will put a wrench in what they say is development spiraling out of control.

“I think [the city] somehow has a vision and they want to stick to that even though there isn’t a lot of feedback,” Haydel says. “Appelbaum just doesn’t want to get community input.

It’s not the entire city council; it’s just the feeling people get is that they’re doing it no matter what.”

in North Dakota. From far away, the pictures are hard to make out but with a closer view, the drawings are detailed depictions of scenes including explosions or flares. Rice says he used the size to symbolize these major events happening, yet the little attention they were getting. By using silverpoint, Rice was able to create very small marks that enhance the subject matter, while some of the larger drawings are more abstract with broader strokes of a paint brush.

Art can be a doorway to start the conversation around these hot button issues. While the drawings are aesthetically pleasing to look at, Rice says, they also shed light on problems and get people thinking.

“They’re pretty pictures, and in some ways that’s subversive,” Rice says.

“But if you make something that’s pretty and it has a message, you have something going for you because you get a bigger audience and you draw people in. They’re about issues; they’re not just about images.”

With his work, Rice says he hopes to ignite people to start paying attention, especially since the clock is ticking to start slowing down climate change.

“I think [art] can’t do anything until there’s a certain amount of momentum, and I think there is momentum now,” Rice says. “I think if people are given the opportunity to be exposed to the idea of conservation or environmental issues on a regular basis, it stays in their consciousness and things start to change. Art can help with that.”

‘Rewilding’ project is taking a formerly incarcerated young man into the wilderness for a life-changing trip

hirty minutes outside New York City, on the road to the Shawangunk Mountains in upstate New York, Anthony DeJesus turned to his travel companions and said this was the farthest he’d ever been outside the city.

Born and raised in the Bronx, he’d joined a gang as a teenager and been incarcerated for dealing drugs by his 20th birthday. His outlook on life was as narrow as the space between the buildings and pavement that surrounded him.

Jesse Spiegel knew there could be another way. He was in the van with DeJesus that day, taking him on an initial exploratory outing to preface a much longer trip that is hoped to be the pilot project for “Rewilding,” a program that would take incarcerated adults far from those city landscapes and into a wider view of the world.

“Because of their surroundings, these guys, they hardly leave their block, and they’ve just got no access to see or experience anything different than that, so how could they possibly know anything other than that?” Spiegel says. “If you’re not shown or don’t see or experience anything else, then you’re not aware of it.

You can’t envision yourself doing it, and I think by getting himself out of that by showing him that there are other ways… I think it’ll broaden his horizons and awaken a sense of potential.”

Spiegel also grew up in New York City and watched, as a teenager, as the district attorney and judge gave the nod to drop charges on him when he was arrested for fighting. He was lucky, Spiegel says, to have parents who told him to put on a suit and sent him to court with a lawyer. The kid he’d been fighting faced real penalties for the same crime — and anyBoulder Weekly

where else, the whole incident might have been ignored as teenage mischief. It was just the first in a series of signs that led Spiegel to see the justice system was broken.

“We are penalizing kids for making childish mistakes,” he says. “I was a kid when I did those things.

I’m a totally different person now.”

Policy changes in the 1970s led to an unprecedented increase in incarceration rates — and no real increase in public safety, according to the Prison Policy Initiative, a nonprofit, non-partisan research and advocacy organization founded to document and publicize mass criminalization. The U.S. incarcerates 716 people for every 100,000 residents, a rate five times higher than most other countries, despite having a comparable crime rate, the organization states.

The runner up is the United Kingdom, with 147 people incarcerated for every 100,000.

It’s an expensive correctional system — running as much as $100,000 per year per criminal at some institutions and totaling $75 billion nationwide — that often fails to really change behavior.

Based on the research compiled for Rewilding, 75 percent of incarcerated men will be re-arrested within five years of their release.

Spiegel was lucky, too, that he had parents who spotted a need for the great outdoors in him, and sent him to climbing camps in Colorado, and that turned to college in Denver. When the former startup entrepreneur sold his company and spent two years traveling and rock climbing and searching for what to do next, he thought of how to reach back into that city and help a few other kids who hadn’t been so fortunate to climb out. That was how he met DeJesus, doing administra-

tive work for a transitional program in New York City and spotlighted immediately by the director as a great spokesperson for what was hoped to be a growing program.

In all of the individuals considered for the program, Spiegel says, he saw a deep, innate desire to spend time in the woods.

“There’s this primal thing in them that’s just itching for it. They’ve never been out there — they want to get out there and build fires and eat bugs,” he jokes. “I think it’ll have an amazing effect, I know it will.”

The plan for this summer is a dream roadtrip: load into a van and spend six weeks traveling around the western United States, driving from New York to Colorado, Wyoming, Oregon, California, Nevada, Utah and then back to New York to climb, camp, fish, practice yoga and learn about permaculture and sustainability. DeJesus, Spiegel and Vitek Linhart, a former professional skier and outdoor educator, will travel together, joined by filmmaker Matt Corliss, who will record their journey for a web series and documentary film.

Doug Metzger, who worked on Dances with Wolves, The Italian Job, Aspen Extreme, City Slickers and White Fang, has also signed on to produce the film.

They’ll live at an eco-village in Oregon and climb with “dirtbags” in Utah, Spiegel says. Perhaps as influential as the things they do and the places they go will be the people they meet.

“Just interacting with people in a loving way I think is very foreign in that [inner city] community,” he says.

“Everybody yearns for that, I think, and by not only exposing them to experiences but feelings and awakening all that, it’s going to awaken a sense of potential.”

The plan has been well-received by the transitional organizations. Their response, Spiegel recounts, was “I see REWILDING Page 22

don’t know how you’re going to fund it, we don’t have the funding for it, but if you can do this for our guys, we think it would be outstanding.”

Seven of them have signed on as partners.

The hope is that this year is just the beginning, and that the web series will pave the way, financially, for more participants and, eventually, the Rewilding’s Alternative Adventure Retreat, a full-fledged alternative approach to transitional therapy for formerly incarcerated adults: one that looks to the outdoors and uses wilderness experiences and an education in sustainable living to give them a much broader perspective on the world.

On that first trip into the woods in upstate New York, to camp and climb, Spiegel says, he could see the difference it was making for DeJesus.

“What you saw was mostly in his eyes, it was mostly him gazing at things and taking things in,” he says.

“My whole life, I’ve been boxed in,” DeJesus says in his introductory interview for Rewilding. In foster care, he

was labeled as a runaway risk and was left in a room with no windows. At one point, he was institutionalized in a room with a window so high he couldn’t even look out of it.

“Growing up in my community if you weren’t tough you couldn’t survive.

The things you did made you tough — being violent,” he continues in that video. “The amount of money you had made you feel tougher or like you had power. It’s not. It’s doing other things, being open to other things, other knowledge is what really gives you that power, and what really makes you tough, to say, ‘Hey man, this makes me happy. This makes me a stronger person.’ … I always wanted to see a mountain. I’ve seen buildings. I’ve seen streets, I’ve seen all these things in the city. It’s nothing new. … It’s about legacy. I want to be able to say, ‘You can do it. I’ve done it, and I came right from where you’re at.’”

His journey is set to begin in midJuly.

Clyfford Still and the natives

efore he became the creator of explosive and epic-scale abstract expressionist paintings and then an artist so reclusive and elusive that he nearly wrote himself out of the art history books, Clyfford Still was a graduate student and instructor at a college in Washington state who went along with a colleague on a search for compelling subjects for portraits. That journey took them to the high plains of northern central Washington and the Colville Indian Reservation. They rode the prevailing sentiment at the time that Native American tribes were vanishing cultures and there was a need to document them before they were gone forever, chased landscape features Still described as second to none and spent their summers on the reservation. In addition to precise, reverent portraits, Still made sketches of teepees, cabins and grain silos.

The work Still created, having not yet found his way to those cloud-like forms and vast canvases in single colors that would dominate his later works, shows him both stumbling that direction and indulging in a kind of plainspeaking documentation of the people he encountered. He fixated on their native costumes and customs, drawing Boulder Weekly

their clothing and shoes in detail, as well as their homes and even a fishing trap.

Work that shows him forging a path toward abstraction and those precise drawings are hung together in Clyfford Still: The Colville Reservation and Beyond, 1934-1939 at the Clyfford Still Museum.

inland art movement. Those who came, mostly, were art teachers with summers off and an interest in using the time to hone their skills. They rented rooms for about $10 a month.

The exhibition of 30 works on paper and eight oil paintings are joined by sketches, photographs and even the letter pitching the artists’ colony to Washington State College. The cumulative effect shows Still moving back and forth between two modes of thinking — from the precise, graphite on paper portraits he makes of tribal leaders and figures and delicate pastels of Native American women in headdresses adorned with a pair of feathers, to the broad, rough, dark earthy tones for figures with elongated hands, faces, bare breasts, all of it stretched out as though time has worn all the elasticity out of these humans.

As with many of the exhibitions at the Clyfford Still Museum, the archives have yielded dozens of these works never publicly exhibited before this first study of Still’s formative years.

material is that he’s finding his artistic person, he’s finding out how to make painting do what he wanted it to do,” Failing says. “And by the time he gets to the mid-’40s, he’s got it pretty well figured out, and then he can move on to making the kinds of decisions and the kinds of shifts in his practice that you can see in the rest of the galleries.”

Still turned a documentarian-type eye to the costumes worn by the tribes, recording details in the gaudy shawls and skirts in many cases worn to the town of Nespelem to visit friends or conduct business at the Indian Agency there. The colors he was exposed to in the Native American clothing seemed to have made a lasting impression on his palette. His sketches and studies show the artist’s mind working away at the phenomena of color in the Native Americans’ shawls and dresses — he draws a study of the figure and his or her attire alongside patches of color in which the human figure has evaporated, and Still plays only in the colors, using pastels to see what emerges from a layer of violet and yellow with a little red band, or purple with blue over the top.

“There’s just a new chromatic range that comes in in a very factual way because those are the colors that he experienced there,” Failing says.

It’s no accident that the painting hung on a gallery wall glimpsed from the gallery hosting this exhibition is a yellow field with a bolt of red through it.

The change doesn’t occur immediately — it’s not that he goes, sketches native costumes and his colors immediately change, but there’s a slow build that emerges throughout the 1940s and into the 1950s.

“From my perspective, I feel very

comfortable that this is one lasting effect of this period and this work,” Failing says. “In terms of the many other ways in which it could have influenced him, it’s still a big question mark.”

Because so much of Still’s work from this era is lost — an inventory of portraits from a 1936 session lists 22 works, but the museum has only three of those described — it’s tough to draw sweeping conclusions about what influences extend from that era, but Failing says there’s enough evidence at least to pinpoint that sense of color — the “chromatic va-va-voom,” she says — carried forward for a lifetime, long after Still had since moved on to the other places his career would take him: California, New York, Maryland.

“If we could see it all, we might have some different ideas about how we might describe it or what he chose to focus on,” she says. As it is, there’s no way even to know how much of what he made has been saved.

The exhibition includes paintings that show only the hints of the levels of abstraction that will become Still’s trademark — those wavering lines and cloudlike patches over fields of color. A painting of what can only just barely be disassembled into two interlocked human figures finishes the exhibition — though, it’s important to note, not chronologically. That painting and works like it were done at the same time Still was completing those precise graphite landscapes and portraits.

“I think this is a painting that’s very important for showing what’s next, but it also has a family resemblance to what’s going on here,” Failing says, gesturing to the landscapes and portraits.

Henry Rollins turns his anger into fuel

Rollins’s LA Weekly column is immensely popular, but Rollins mostly sees his frustrations with it. For this reason, he has released his latest book, Before the Chop II, the second volume of his original pieces for LA Weekly.

“Readers will get to read exactly what I sent the LA Weekly before it is chopped for space and renamed,” he says. Referencing a recent work, he adds, “‘Musical Elitism is for Lightweights,’ is never a title I would put on anything and it’s embarrassing to have to see that, but that’s how it is. It is for reasons like this that we do the Chop books. Hopefully, someone digs the book.”

In addition to his books, he’s also juggling a radio show with KCRW in Los Angeles, another avenue Rollins uses to purge his inner demons.

“I don’t like inactivity,” he says. “I like to do things and stay active. The radio show is the funnest of all the jobs I have. I am an angry person. It keeps me motivated and on the move.”

Over the years, he’s used multiple platforms to address his agendas, most famously the case involving the West Memphis Three — three men who were tried and convicted in 1994 for the 1993 murders of three boys in West Memphis, Ark. After countless appeals and the support of several high profile celebrities, the three men were released August 19, 2012.

Rollins’ contributions included a benefit album and endorsement of the film, West of Memphis.

“It would take a long time to explain why I got involved,” he says. “If anyone is so inclined, they can do their own research. I would advise anyone interested to see the very good documentary West of Memphis. I am not actively involved with anything on that scale at this time. That was a decade-long, very heavy lift. It wasn’t easy, but of course worth it. In the case of the West Memphis Three, I thought the justice system failed. If citizens didn’t stand up for them, Jessie, Damien and Jason could very well still be in prison. For me, it’s an anger thing. I was in it to help these guys for sure, but I was also in it to kick Arkansas’ ass, which I did.”

Rae has been playing the cello for over 15 years, and her music is haunting and whimsical, ranging from slow and soft to dancey and energetic. Through the use of a looping pedal on stage, Rae is able to experiment with her instrument and make interesting songs full of layers. Rae also explores improvisation, creating one-of-a-kind performances.

‘The Salt of the Earth’ swims in human suffering

Y

ou know those feel-good documentaries that make your heart swell as you discover some unknown artist, overlooked genius or divine but unrecognized human accomplishment? The Salt of the Earth is not one of those. For about 95 of its 110 minutes, directors Wim Wenders and Juliano Ribeiro Salgado assail your soul with photographs of the absolute worst shit any human has ever seen. That’s not an overstatement or hyperbole; we’re talking exposure to the crème de la crème of evil horror. In other words, it’s perfect for blind dates, provided you hate the person who set you up on it.

Technically, The Salt of the Earth is a biography of photographer Sebastião Salgado. For four decades, the Brazilian has traveled the globe, working as a “social documentary photographer.”

Essentially, he and his wife, Lélia Wanick — who is oddly absent from much of the documentary — come up with a major theme, and then Salgado explores it visually for years. For example, “Workers” explored impoverished laborers, “Sahel: The End of the Road” examined the suffering in Africa during a major drought in 1984 and “Genesis” investigated tribal life and nature as close as could be to original harmony (pre-industry).

The last one, “Genesis,” is beautiful and moving. It ties in to Salgado and Wanick’s Institutio Terra, which is a restoration of part of a rainforest that began in the 1990s. Yeah, they rebuilt a rainforest, in case you feel like recycling is a bit too much effort on your

part to save the planet. While that is uplifting, everything else is very much not. Salgado’s work has been criticized by some as exploitative. And it’s easy to see where that criticism stems from.

The film is often a traveling exhibition, featuring scores of images of dead babies, stacks of bodies, devastated communities and on and on. Is Salgado exposing a truth we flinch from, daring us to stare in the eyes of this world’s true horror in an effort to make us confront it? Or is he an artist who wins awards and a non-insignificant amount of fame and fortune profiting from images of this world’s most broken creatures?

In another documentary, we may have been provided an answer. This one, however, was directed by an admitted superfan (Wenders) and Salgado’s son.

Impartiality is never easy to find between documentarian and subject, but it’s completely absent here. This isn’t to say The Salt of the Earth isn’t excellent and important. In fact, by letting Salgado’s work speak for itself and placing it in context of his life, the film provides enough evidence to convince viewers that the photographer certainly has never intended exploitation and is a true believer in social and global change.

The Salt of the Earth is harrowing, haunting and holy. It’s a challenge at times to watch, but ultimately it is proof that to “see” is to “know.” Even if, sometimes, we wish we didn’t.

ou have to appreciate the moxie of a restaurant that is open until it sells out. Especially when you set up shop at the end of an empty parking lot, triangulated by Buffalo Wild Wings, PetSmart and Super Target, in the perpetually under construction, unglamorous superdevelopment of Superior.

But the place is packed. It’s rainy and cold, and people are sitting outside on wooden picnic benches, slugging down meat and never minding the weather. It’s the spillover from inside, which stays at capacity throughout lunch.

They sit outside and get wet because these fine patrons know something. They know that Wayne’s might be the best barbecue spot in the county, if not the state. If you’re not bracing yourself for that level of greatness after seeing the shameless and soggy crowd, you certainly are when the smell, carried by the moisture in the air, hits the back of your nose cone and your reaction is atypical.

Wayne’s smelled so good it made me angry. They say pleasure and pain are at once on opposite ends of the spectrum, but that they meet back around on the other side. I guess I just “crossed over.” Or maybe it was just one of those moments when you realize all places could be like this. A place where the staff is geeking out over barbecued meat and every choice you make is a “great choice.”

After adding a side of coleslaw and mac and cheese, I brought the tray back to the table along with fresh brewed sweet tea. On the table were three sauces: a traditional variety, a peppery and spicy blend and a lighter, vinegar sauce. The latter was the best, but the meats were so expertly flavored and moist that sauce was a bonus, almost an imposition. Of the three meats, the ribs were the best — meaty hunks fell right off the bone, the bark was perfectly textured (crispy, not tough), and there was a genuine flavor of the meat and bone in each bite, not some fabricated flavor or overdone spice blend.

We can’t know, of course, whether or not a package of dried noodles was flown across the ocean by plane. Most likely it was carried by a cargo boat, which burns a lot less carbon than a plane. Even so, maritime shipping is responsible for about 4 percent of

global carbon emissions, on par with the carbon footprint of Japan. But the pasta could have been shipped by sailboat, with virtually no carbon cost.

Pursuing a local foods diet, with flexibility provided by the Marco Polo Exception, prepares your eating habits for a day when certain foods from around the world might be shipped carbon-free, by boats similar to Polo’s.

That day might be closer than you think.

one whose income is derived from shipping and trade, Langelaan has a surprising take on the practice.

“It is complete nonsense that we are transporting anything and everything across the planet,” he said in an interview with Port of Rotterdam Perspectives. But Langelaan, whose company is called Fairtransport Shipping, would also be the first to point out that not all ships emit equally. One of his ships, the Tres Hombres, is currently en-route to Europe laden with coffee, rum and chocolate from the Caribbean. No carbon will be burned in the transport of these indulgences, because the Tres Hombres is a sailboat — the only engine-free transatlantic cargo ship in the world.

But while the Tres Hombres and its sister sailboat the Nordly’s are inspirational and beautiful ways to ship cargo, Langelaan and his partners at Fairtransport harbor no illusions that such old-fashioned technology is the key to countering global warming. The sailboats are reminders that fuel-based shipping isn’t the only game in town, and they are useful for motivating and educating people, as well as in delivering small amounts of cargo. But the folks at Fairtransport have their sights set on a goal that’s both more realistic and more ambitious. They are designing a new, hybrid cargo ship that will run primarily on wind-filled sails, but will also have an engine for use when necessary. Dubbed the Ecoliner, the boat will travel as fast as a conventional cargo ship, while using only half the petroleum.

Despite these promising improvements over conventional cargo ships, Langelaan looks at the Ecoliner as more of a crutch than a real solution.

He fears that a more fuel-efficient vessel would simply encourage more longdistance shipping.

“Only products that are not available locally should be transported,” he said, “and in a sustainable way.” The rum, chocolate and coffee on board the Tres Hombres are perfect examples of

such products. They can’t be produced in Europe, and they can handle a slow passage on a sailboat.

In the grand scheme of things, the greenhouse gas emissions from food transport are not a massive threat to the climate. Transportation of food only makes up between 4-10 percent of the total carbon emissions created by the food system and adds up to much less than the carbon burned in the production, processing and packaging of food. Animal products tend to have especially large carbon footprints, which dwarf the amount of carbon used in their transport.

Keeping track of the impacts of various foods on a case-by-case basis can be overwhelming, but I would argue that thinking about your food choices like this is akin to a meditation practice that makes you a better person, similar to recycling, or riding your bike instead of driving or volunteering on a wind-powered cargo ship. None of these actions will save the world by itself, but they add up, are contagious and get you into good habits.

As you remove some foods from your diet, they will be replaced by new ones, and sometimes an accompanying lifestyle shift.

You want strawberries in the winter? Then springtime, aka right now, is the time to plan for that. First, figure out how to stockpile a large strawberry stash this summer, either by planting a strawberry field, or more realistically, finding a local farmer to buy them from. Then, focus on storing those berries. Dry them. Make jam, leather, sauce or syrup. Doing so will help you connect with the culinary texture of where you are and ground you in traditions that make use of preserved foods in winter.

And you might end up with some products that could be transported by the Tres Hombres, and perhaps traded for a bottle of 10-year-old balsamic vinegar with which to drizzle on fresh strawberries next year. At that point the Marco Polo Exception will become an exceptional treat.

Boulder Passport returns with summer drink ideas and deals

emorial Day weekend, to many, represents the start of summer. In Boulder and eight other cities, it also means the start of a summer of imbibing all across town with a pocket-sized booklet, or “Passport,” that invites you to explore bars, restaurants, wineries, distilleries and breweries, old and new, downtown and around town.

This is the second year for the program in Boulder, which expanded from the Denver passport program that was started three years ago by Imbibe, a Denver boozy event company. When Imbibe considered expanding the program to Boulder in 2014, I was a natural fit to take the reins of the program as I own Local Table Tours and already had great relationships with many restaurants, breweries, bars, wineries and distilleries in town. So, here’s my disclaimer, folks: Yes, I’m biased.

The Boulder Passport is a pocketsized, field guide-like booklet filled with two-for-one drink specials valid all summer — from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend — at 42 of Boulder’s most beloved watering holes. Local establishments will stamp each booklet after a visit so participants can keep track of and eventually tally up the number of places visited (and drinks consumed, if so inclined) throughout the summer.

The variety of restaurants included in the passport was designed to give people the ability to not only hit their favorite spots, but to get out of their comfort zones and taste something they might not usually order, such as the “Bartender’s Choice Cocktail” at Foolish Craig’s. General Manager Jimmy Fay asks customers about which spirits and flavors they enjoy and creates something that’s unique for them, and then writes his creation down in the Passport so they can return for the

same drink later.

Passport holders will be able to use their discounts at breweries like Asher Brewing Company, FATE Brewing Company, West Flanders Brewery and others; top restaurants like Blackbelly Market, Japango, OAK at Fourteenth, Sushi Hana and West End Tavern; and unique distilleries and wineries like Boulder Distillery, J&L Distilling Company, What We Love Winery and more.

Participating restaurateurs are excited about this year’s opportunities. Tracy Eliasson, owner of Settembre Cellars, said they “loved being part of a product that customers were so excited to own, being discovered by so many people who had no idea North Boulder has wineries, and hearing from customers [about] their favorite stops that came before us.”

Similarly, Fay from Foolish Craig’s says that The Passport is “not only a great way to connect with customers,” but gives him “room to flex his creative muscle, learn new things and have fun doing it.”

New to Boulder diners this year and featured in the Boulder Passport is Blackbelly Market. Chef and owner Hosea Rosenberg says that participating is “a great way to introduce new customers to our very new restaurant.”

As Blackbelly is opening two patios this summer, he thinks it’s “a perfect way to bring new faces outside to enjoy some drinks.”

Passports will be available for presale online at ThePassportProgram. com, and will be available for sale downtown at Cured and at Geek Spirits in Gunbarrel after they become valid on May 22 for $20.

There is also a Boulder Passport launch party being held at Shine on May 21 from 7:30-10 p.m. where Passports will be available for purchase, along with food and drink specials for Passport holders.

Is there something I could put on my profile expressing my preference for cisgender women that is not offensive to trans people? It’s important to me that I remain an ally.

Gay men are likewise free to put “no fats, no femmes” or “white guys only — just expressing my preference” on their profiles, and too many do (and not all of them are white guys), but gay men who do that have to hand in their Not an Asshole cards. Occasionally having coffee with someone you’re not into — and having to tiptoe through the awkwardness — isn’t something you can avoid in online dating. You would have to do that even if only cis lesbians responded to your ads, as you’re presumably not attracted to all cis lesbians. Having a coffee now and then with a trans woman you most likely won’t find attractive — but you never know — is a small price to pay to make the online dating world a less shitty place for trans people. It’s what an ally would do.

The golden years just might go better with pot

S

o you’re one of the 13 percent of Boulderites who are over 55 years of age. It’s been almost a year and a half since marijuana legalization, and you’ve sat on the sidelines watching the experiment unfold. Maybe you tried it in college. Perhaps you weren’t willing to break the law when it was illegal. You’re curious but not sure how to proceed.

You’re not alone. The fastest-growing segment of the population to use marijuana is the (wink, wink) “older” demographic. Eight percent of people aged 50 to 64 said they had used marijuana in the last year, and those numbers are only expected to grow in the next few years.

There’s never been a better time for seniors, especially in Colorado, to find out about whether or not marijuana might be beneficial.

Are there good reasons so many Americans use marijuana, and not just as medication? Or that more and more states and legislators are opting to allow cannabis to be regulated much like alcohol?

The answer to both questions is yes.

Marijuana is a drug, and it certainly isn’t for everybody. I have friends on both sides of the fence. Legalization gives you a choice: If you’re interested or curious, look into it. If you’re not, you should stay away.

Basically, what do you have to lose? All those recent headlines about cannabis killing brain cells or lowering IQ are, at least so far, more wishful thinking than scientific fact, especially if, like most people, you’re a casual user. You probably saw the recent rash of stories about a study that suggested that casual marijuana use is linked to brain changes. University of Colorado researchers who reviewed those studies found no correlation between cannabis use and brain changes when alcohol use, gender, age and other variables were factored. (That study didn’t get as many headlines.)

One thing to consider is the concept of “getting high.” Watching television or reading the anti-mari-

juana literature, you might get the idea that cannabis makes you crazy. I have never understood this. The feeling, at least for me and everyone I know, is always euphoric, always relaxing. Steve Jobs put it best when he once told Pentagon interviewers: “The best way I would describe the effect of the marijuana and the

hashish is that it would make me relaxed and creative.” That certainly doesn’t mean it will do the same for everyone, but then again, it doesn’t take long to find out if whether you like the “high” or not since the effects of smoked marijuana happen almost immediately.

Another thing you often read is that marijuana is stronger than it used to be. While it might be true that potencies are higher, that doesn’t mean it’s more

dangerous — it simply means it’s better quality. It’s not the brick pot smuggled into the country from south of the border for decades. Today it’s grown in better conditions and comes to market fresh. I’d venture that Colorado marijuana is among the bestgrown in the world right now. Don’t buy into the hype that it’s more harmful. Growers are developing medical strains that don’t get you high at all. Some of the significant research is being done at CU, including mapping the cannabis genome, which means the quality will only get better.

If you’re wondering whether you’ll look out of place at the local dispensary, forget about it.

You’ll run into people of all ages, and you’ll find the budtenders especially helpful as you seek out the the right strain or edible. Don’t be shy about asking questions — that’s why they’re there. Everybody wants you to have the best experience possible.

One of the big surprises for me was learning the differences in the many kinds now available and being developed. After years of just buying “pot,” it’s really wonderful to try different strains designed to wake you up, give you that mellow creative buzz Jobs was talking about or calm you down. Having problems getting to sleep? Talk to your budtender about a good indica strain.

The most important thing, of course, is to stay informed. There is an abundance of good information and research on the Internet.

Spend some time with a search engine looking at the research that has been done on marijuana and health as it relates to seniors. You might be surprised.

No one has ever overdosed on marijuana, and no one ever will. Don’t believe me? Educate yourself.

Read the literature — pro and con. Be skeptical of everything. Make up your own mind.

POPE FRANCIS TAKES ON SATAN Pope Francis is making climate change a top priority. The pontiff not only sees global warming as a threat to future generations but also as a social justice issue wherein climate-denying governments and corWikiCommons porations are forcing billions of people to live in polluted areas in poverty.

The Pope intends to take his climate-change message to Washington, D.C. later this year, and we can’t think of anywhere it is more needed. It becomes clearer every day that the oil and gas industry is now solidly in control of what was once our democracy but is now simply a form of corporate governance based on each industry’s ability to purchase congressional votes from both parties (you go Bernie Sanders).

From a spiritual standpoint, this whole Pope/ climate thing raises an interesting question. If Pope Francis and fighting against climate change are on the side of God, then whom is Jim Inhofe, Barack Obama, John Hickenlooper and the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission really working for? Just a thought. And we suspect that there may be a few inverted pentagrams floating around the offices at the EPA as well.

TAKE THAT TPP On Tuesday, May 12, Democrats in the U.S. Senate prevented a vote that would have granted “fast track” authority on trade to President Obama. The vote, had it taken place, would have allowed the president to sign the Trans-Pacific Partnership without prior congressional debate or even a careful analysis of the trade agreement by Congress. This is particularly disturbing as the TPP has been largely written by corporations in secret and would have undermined U.S. labor as well as our environmental laws including potentially such things as local bans on fracking.

Perhaps more than any issue in recent years, this showdown over TPP demonstrates the power of the people when they band together and make their voice heard — heard as in threatening the future political careers of any Democrat who dared to vote for fast track. Hopefully we’ve learned a lesson here; namely that no matter how much money gets poured into political coffers and how much lobbying corporations do, politicians will still do the right thing when they believe that they will be voted out of office if they don’t. Here’s hoping that Americans will keep this political activism alive and start applying it to climate change, energy extraction and other areas where it is badly needed to counter the influence of the corporate bribery that is so weakening our democracy.

WE’RE PAYING FOR ALL THAT AIR POLLUTION “The world’s biggest and most profitable fossil fuel companies are receiving huge and rising subsidies from U.S. taxpayers,” The Guardian states. An investigation by the British newspaper found that three projects run by fossil fuel giants Shell, ExxonMobil and Marathon Petroleum received subsidies in the U.S. that were granted by — no surprise here — politicians who received “significant campaign contributions from the fossil fuel industry.”

The projects include a petrochemical refinery Shell proposed in Pennsylvania that could receive a $1.6 billion state subsidy doled out in tax credits of $66 million each year for 25 years; upgrades to an ExxonMobil refinery in Louisiana that is receiving a $119 million state subsidy; and 10- and 15-year tax credits worth $78 million for Marathon Petroleum offered to the company for retaining and creating jobs in Ohio.

Fossil fuel analysis organization Oil Change International found that U.S. payers provide $21 billion each year to subsidize oil exploration and production.

This in an era when politicians and real people alike raise increasing alarm over the need to take immediate action on climate change — and, apparently, real people need to take immediate action on campaign funding, too.

And all of the subsidies date to Obama’s time in office. In fact, The Guardian found that federal fossil fuel subsidies have increased 45 percent since Obama’s 2009 call on the G20 to eliminate subsidies like these.

Talk about do as I say, and not as I do.
