The death of bin Laden Regarding concerns about killing bin Laden, the most dangerous extremist in the world: I say we had little choice. We were uninvited intruders in a foreign country on a very tight and risky mission. What if he would have gotten away or somehow tipped off an aide to blow up the compound? Could you imagine the turmoil, disagreements and wasted years if we had brought him to Guantanamo or put him on trial in New York City, or the hostages that would have been at risk all over the world as bargaining chips for his release?

The closure that we all need to end a tragic period in our history would have come painfully slow at a time when we need to get on with re-booting our nation. The burial at sea was also relevant to prevent a site for martyrdom.

Bin Laden, fortunately, died quickly, not like the hundreds of ill-fated hostages who watched their plane crash into a building or the thousand that were slowly incinerated or crushed in the following inferno. Bin Laden declared war on America and attacked, then we killed him. That’s good enough for me.

Next comes 10.7. That’s the $10.7 billion in profits this oil giant has soaked up in just the first three months of this year — a new record, not achieved by any managerial genius, increased productivity, or improvement in consumer service, but solely by the jack-up in gas prices.

Finally, 21-and-a-half. This is the big score made

by Rex Tillerson, Exxon’s CEO. The chief pulled down $21.5 million last year in personal compensation, making him the highest paid executive in the oil league and one of the most richly paid CEOs in the Boulder Weekly

civilization itself. It is a shame that Martin Luther King’s legacy of nonviolent action is now so cavalierly termed “childishly naïve.”

How’s that possible? Because Big Oil’s lobbyists have so skewed the tax system that Exxon got a $156 million rebate from us taxpayers last year.

So Exxon is soaking us at the gas pump and sacking our public treasury to gain record profits for itself, while bestowing a royal fortune on its CEO. Oh, one more score: 14 million.

That’s the average dollar amount that Exxon spends on campaign donations and lobbyists every year.

Horrific plastic problem (Re: “A life less plastic,” Boulderganic, May 5.) Thanks for your article.

I am a member of the Glen Rock Ecological Commission here in New Jersey. My [goal] is to reduce plastic usage. I have presented a proposal to our borough government to restrict plastic bag distribution by charging for bags and requiring they be made of 3-millimeter-thick plastic. Ultimately, if enacted as an ordinance, plastic bag usage would decline by at least 50 percent.

Similar programs in India, China and many other regions in the world have produced drastic reductions in plastic bag usage.

Similarly, I am attacking the sale of water in plastic bottles. These two items made of plastic are the main culprits contributing to the billions upon billions of tons of plastic, much of it toxic, that is currently befouling the waters and lands of this planet we live on. I would be pleased to hear from you with your thoughts on this horrific problem and also the progress of the plan to ban or fine the use of plastic bags in Boulder.

Save the Hwy. 93 corridor What is the 93 corridor? The beautiful, mostly undeveloped stretch of land along the foothills between Golden and Boulder is home to Highway 93.

Why does it need saving? Some well-meaning folks want to install a fullsized, four-lane, divided highway toll road right along side of Highway 93.

If you have not driven Highway 93 lately, please do so soon to remind yourself what natural beauty in our backyard looks like. As spring comes and the valleys become green, enjoy the pastoral setting that belongs to all of us — before someone installs a toll road complete with overpasses and … well, picture a W-470 placed next to 93.

Currently, Highway 93 is widened and adjusted periodically as needed. A toll road like E-470 will wipe out green space along the hogback and forever have increasing tolls to try to pay for it.

and businesses in the area.

Highway 93 is a special case that needs special consideration. We have a beautiful gift along the foothills that needs to be protected. Boulder does amazing things with open space protection, and so do others. They know, then, that humans and others suffer from loss of natural beauty. Natural beauty has value. The deal cut by Boulder is a compromise and a sellout!

We can preserve the Highway 93 corridor. Please contact Gov. John Hickenlooper and tell him a toll road is not the solution for Highway 93. A regional task force to preserve the natural beauty along the foothills needs to be created and given the task of making it happen.

The f-word (Re: “Yes, that word,” In Case You Missed it, May 5.) You love “the word”?

Interesting that the same word is used for anger, amazement, belittlement and the act of love. We are, of course, told on another page of your same issue (P. 39) that women like tenderness before fucking, combining all the meanings of the word, including anger in attempting to achieve the peak experience. No wonder we are so confused.

We use the same word for opposite peak experiences. One that destroys us and destroys the other, and joins us in a mutually Rand-ish narcissism. The other which draws us together into mutual bonding. WTF! Maybe this confusion is akin to why we can accept the idea of protecting ourselves with nuclear terror or dismiss a million in collateral damage, just as Stalin, Hitler, Osama bin Laden, Saddam Hussein, the CIA and the famed “American People” do (as in, “fuck them, they are the enemy”). Well, Jesus did say, “Love your enemies,” but I don’t believe he meant “fuck them.”

Personally, I don’t love this irrational and destructive, very confused word.

Interesting also that we pretend to keep this “adult” word from children. My experience teaching junior high taught me the futility of that effort! You are at least correct in challenging the repression of the word, keeping it in the shadows where it gains its power to continue the confusion. Gotta see this movie!

It’s always amazed me that there are those in our society whose first response to an act of rape is to attack or blame the victim. What was she wearing? Was she drunk? Was she walking alone at night?

Some of the people who ask these questions aren’t so much blaming the victim as seeking a sense of reassurance that the same thing won’t happen to them. After all, they would never get drunk and pass out at a frat house.

They would never walk home alone at 1 a.m. They would never dress like that.

But there are others who seem to side with the rapist, coming up with reasons to excuse his violent and criminal actions while holding the victim accountable. Do these people identify and sympathize with the rapist? Or do they hold onto archaic notions about women, sexuality and rape?

Perhaps both.

Implied in the Canadian cop’s use of the term “slut” is the idea that women who are “too sexual” are fair game for men who rape and that they might even deserve what happens to them. One SlutWalk organizer, a rape survivor, described how the fact that she owned a vibrator was used against her, as if the act of getting herself off and enjoying

her own body somehow meant that she deserved to be assaulted. (If you own more than one vibrator, does that mean you deserve to be gang-raped?)

This attitude is nothing less than misogyny. It’s based in the archaic belief that there are two kinds of women: virgins and women a man can fuck at will with impunity.

But women have a right to embrace their own sexuality and sensuality. They have a right to enjoy sex with partners of their choosing — including batteryoperated ones — without suffering violence. And that’s what SlutWalk is all about — reclaiming the word that’s used to sexually suppress women and excuse violence against them.

SlutWalk Denver is slated for July 2 from noon to 3 p.m. Sluts and supporters of sluts rights will gather at the State Capitol and march to Civic Center Park to decry slut-bashing and medieval attitudes toward women, women’s sexuality and rape.

Join in and stand up for your right to embrace your own sexuality while being free from sexual violence. Hey, sluts like us need to stick together.

In a misguided attempt to recoup sales tax lost when people buy goods from online vendors like Amazon.com, they passed a law requiring online retailers that don’t collect sales tax to notify both customers and the state when a customer’s online purchases exceed $500. The state would then require that the customer pay sales tax on that amount directly to the state.

In a cash-strapped state like Colorado, it made a lot of sense to some people — at least on paper.

In reality, it meant a lot of new expenses for online retailers, which suddenly needed to devote staff time, paper and postage to tallying individual customer purchases and notifying the state government and their customers about the amount each customer spent. It also meant a lot of confusion for residents who found themselves wondering if the new law had turned them into tax criminals.

Boulder Weekly said at the time it was a stupid move, but the bill passed anyway. This spring, it seemed lawmakers were coming around. A bill eliminating the law, House Bill 1318, passed the Colorado House on May 5, but as of press time Wednesday, the last day of the session, it appeared to be doomed.

It’s troubling that the bill’s initial success was due at least in part to the fact that it failed to raise the projected millions for state coffers and was likely to be struck down in court if it wasn’t eliminated from state statute.

It would be more reassuring if lawmakers were repenting last year’s vote because they realized how anti-business and burdensome the law was. Apparently that’s too much to ask.

Sharia law in Colorado Did you know it’s illegal to “commit adultery” in Colorado? Neither did we.

But it is. And although there was a push to get that law off the books, conservatives succeeded in quashing that effort. Some religious conservatives argued that keeping the law would be a victory for morality, even if the law was never enforced again.

This is just one of those instances where reality clashes with religion.

It’s been a long time since an A stitched on clothing stood for anything other than the Oakland As. Even the term “adultery” feels dated. Not that the notion of being faithful to one’s spouse has disappeared. Far from it. Fooling around on one’s spouse or partner is still viewed as a bad thing to do. But is it criminal?

Those conservative Christians would be the first to shriek if a Muslim group tried to enact Sharia law — conservative law based on the Quran — here in our state. It seems just as backward to attempt to preserve the tatters of Christian “sharia” in Colorado.

Campus coffers, part 2 A couple of weeks back, we asked what we thought were a couple of simple questions of CU officials after they trotted out their new “Creating Futures” fundraising campaign.

Upon hearing claims that the university raised $1 billion in the previous “Beyond Boundaries” campaign between 1997 and 2003, we wondered: How much of that total was the widely trumpeted $250 million pledge from Claudia and Bill Coleman in 2001 that, how shall we say it, never fully materialized? We also asked if CU was counting in that total the $92.7 million committed by Gasper Lazzara in 2003 that fell through.

After only a mild runaround, here’s the reply from CU spokesperson Ken McConnellogue: “We count both pledge commitments and current cash gifts in campaign totals (we do not count estate gifts unless they realize during the campaign period). The Colemans have two separate gift streams. The first was counted in Beyond Boundaries and the second is being counted in Creating Futures. As to amounts, the Colemans giving total to date remains private. This is a general rule of thumb we follow for all donors unless they direct us otherwise (or make the amount known themselves), so we take the same approach with Lazzara.”

Our good old public university won’t release information? Shocking.

Ned residents think sustainability

dozen Nederland residents sat down on May 9 to start planning how to craft a vision statement for their community that will empower residents to take action — Nederland’s Envision 2020. They know it can work; their open spaces, parks, playgrounds, tennis courts and ice-skating rink are just some of the tangible products of Nederland’s previous plan, Envision 2010.

“I think at the end of the [2010] envisioning, it was a pretty… not openended, but a statement that was fairly general that people could take and then do fun and exciting things with,” says Annette Croughwell, who moved to Nederland in 1982. She participated in the Nederland Envision 2010 meeting and is helping to organize Envision 2020.

A survey asked residents to prioritize the vision statement and areas of interest from Envision 2010, and the 350 people who responded ranked open space trails, parks and recreation at the top.

“So we went after Great Outdoor Colorado funding to do a master plan for parks and rec and open space,” says Garry Sanfacon, a 20-year resident of Nederland and also a participant in Envision 2010. “It led to hundreds of thousands of dollars being raised for those types of things.”

It’s hard to say what the priorities will be at the Envision 2020 meeting.

“I think we really feel that there’s only one Nederland. We don’t want to be Everywhere, USA,” Sanfacon says.

“But there’s things we want to accomplish. And the world’s changing, and we need to change with it, but not to lose ourselves in it.”

“We want amenities, but we want sustainability,” Croughwell says. “We want to be able to do things up here, but we want it to stay small and rustic.”

They’re clear on one thing: no stop lights.

“Sustainability was not in our mindset when we did the 2010 vision statement,” Sanfacon says. But now they’re thinking about chickens in city limits, biomass plants, solar panels, community gardens, renewable energy and trying to get a farmer’s market started.

“But we haven’t articulated that. We haven’t come together as a community to Boulder Weekly

talk about what that really means for Nederland,” Sanfacon says. “So how do we balance the triple bottom line, the environment, the economy and the social?”

Envision 2020’s organizers expect about 100 people to attend this visioning session for the community, scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., June 7, at the Nederland Community Center. They’ll break into small groups, and engage in dialogues with one another on their views of how Nederland wants to be identified.

“We’re going to really try to focus the summit as much as possible on what you all have in common and what agreements you have,” says Caryn Capriccioso, principal partner at interSector Partners, L3C, a Longmont firm facilitating the event. “Conflict, however, is where true change happens.

Differences of opinion, different perspectives, different ideas, that’s where change bubbles up from.”

Organizers have said they hope to emerge from that meeting with a draft of the vision for 2020. Finalizing that document won’t be easy. Sanfacon said the 2010 vision statement group spent six months in follow-up meetings “wordsmithing” the final document.

Attendees of this pre-summit meeting said they’d like the town board of trustees to commit to using the Envision 2020 vision statements to make decisions based on what Nederland wants for Nederland.

The Envision 2010 plan was not formally adopted by the town trustees.

James Wood, sustainability education and outreach coordinator for Boulder County, stopped by the meeting to listen in and work to match Boulder County’s programs to what its residents want.

“This is what a lot of communities are going through,” Wood says. “‘What is sustainability?’ is the question. Is it green? Is it corporate responsibility?

Who can do it well?”

But the people who get together to talk about it, he said, will be better positioned to move toward sustainable living.

What Nederland residents are doing and how they’re doing it might start to matter more for the whole county, because the county has just started to dialogue on revising its vision for sustainability.

umors have been circulating that The Yellow Deli, which opened about a month ago near the corner of Ninth and Pearl streets in Boulder, is operated by a religious “cult.”

The establishment that took the place of Heidi’s Deli is part of a chain of restaurants that has been both lauded for its Reuben sandwiches and chastised for its fundamentalist Christian point of view.

The group behind the Yellow Deli is an international organization called Twelve Tribes. And an Internet search of Twelve Tribes turns up all sorts of claims, including allegations of child labor, racism and homophobia.

While the group has continually rejected the “cult” label, its members have been accused of suppressing women’s rights, abusing children and sending their founder money to support a lavish lifestyle.

But a visit to the Boulder Yellow Deli reveals a group that is open and eager to dispel what they say are misconceptions about the Twelve Tribes perpetuated by the media and others.

ROOTS OF A MOVEMENT Gene Spriggs formed the Twelve Tribes in 1972 in Chattanooga, Tenn. The group created the Yellow Deli soon after because, according to the group’s website, they hoped to create “a place where they could work for a living and still be together, learning all about their Saviour and his Teachings.” The menu proclaimed, “Our specialty is the fruit of the Spirit. Why not ask?”

Over the years, Twelve Tribes has been accused of Boulder Weekly

both child labor and child abuse.

Members attribute it to the anti-cult movement and their homeschooling practices, which include having kids do chores alongside parents and disciplining their children by smacking them with thin wooden rods, or “balloon sticks,” adhering to a biblical passage about using “reeds” for the same purpose.

They have been accused of forcing women into the roles of subservient wife and childbearer, and forbidding contraceptives and the use of drugs during childbirth. New members are expected to give up all of their belongings and wealth once they join the Twelve Tribes, so that the entire community can share the resources equally. Some also give up their previous relationships. According to their website, new members get “new friends, a new job, a new hairstyle, a new address and, most importantly, a new Master, who will direct every aspect of your life.”

The group is known for being a sort of hippie Jesus commune, one in which all members live together, have an equal voice, share the work and share the rewards, a community in which no one is rich or poor. They take biblical passages literally, believing that they should recruit others to their point of view, that adultery and the use of drugs or alcohol are wrong. Outside influences such as television and video games are frowned upon.

The group reportedly wants to propagate extensively, so that there are 144,000 virginal males to serve as the bride of Messiah when Judgment Day comes.

In addition, the Twelve Tribes has been accused of lying to government and court officials to protect their own. They justify it by comparing it to lying to the Nazis about the location of Jews during the Holocaust, saying that the Bible does not require the truth to be told to evil men who aim to hurt the innocent.

According to a page on the group’s website attributed to a female member of the group, “God created woman to be a friend and a helper for man. She was created to be a wife and a mother, to raise children who would in turn know who they were created to be. In

this she would find peace and rest. Sadly enough today though, many women strive to be something ‘better.’

But the good news that we’ve found is that there is nothing better than becoming who you were truly created to be. In this we are learning to have true modesty, that is, a true estimation of ourselves. We are not pitiful little housewives that are bossed around all day by overbearing men, but we are happy, liberated women who willingly submit ourselves to our loving husbands.”

According to a news article posted on the group’s website, Twelve Tribes marriages are arranged by the families of the bride and groom with their cooperation, and during the ceremony, the groom does not kiss the bride — she kisses him, as a symbol of her submission.

Former members say the group is, indeed, a cult that separated them from their family and friends.

Websites like www.twelvetribes-ex.com and groups such as “Ithacans Opposed to the Twelve Tribes Cult” urge against patronizing their establishments.

BLENDING IN One would scarcely detect any of these elements upon entering the Yellow Deli in Boulder. It resembles a number of local establishments, with its herbal scents and all-natural offerings. According to custom, all of the men sport ponytails and beards; the women have their hair pulled back and are dressed modestly. The restaurant features hippie-infused religious artwork and inspirational sayings on the walls, with partial thatched roofs jutting out over booths.

Each Tribe member has been given a special name.

Zach “Chaiyim” O’Keefe is one of the managers, although he is quick to point out that there are two others, since “a three-stringed cord is hard to break.”

He is joined by another manager, Joseph “Dayag” Fisher. Both have come from the Twelve Tribes’ longstanding Manitou Springs establishment, the Maté Factor, where they met. Given the perceived mistreatment the group has received from other media over the years, they confer briefly before talking with a reporter.

tions that have been raised about their group in its nearly 40-year history.

While there are several piles of Twelve Tribes publications on shelves in the restaurant, Fisher says that Yellow Deli employees are not actively proselytizing.

“People can mind their own business, and we’ll serve them and not push anything on anyone,” he says. “We’re not putting what we believe on other people.”

They say the current community lives in two houses in the Boulder area, but they are looking for a bigger spot, like a farmhouse.

Curiously, the Yellow Deli is open 24 hours a day from noon on Sunday until Friday at 3 p.m. Fisher says the schedule is not intended to avoid the party crowd, but to serve as a place where “people can go and not worry about being chased out,” even in the wee hours. In the age of artificial communities created by Facebook, Twitter and email, he says, customers are sometimes “looking for a friend or someone to talk to, instead of popping on the headphones or getting on the computer. People are thirsty for that.”

They are quick to defend founder Spriggs against claims that he takes a percentage of all profits and jetsets around the world visiting his numerous mansions.

“If he gets any money, he uses it to buy shoes for the single brothers,” says Fisher, who lived with Spriggs for four years. “He helps widows and orphans.”

If there are any mansions, he says, “we all have mansions,” and Spriggs has many members living there with him.

They insist that no money is sent to Spriggs, although one Twelve Tribes community might choose to help another community if it is in financial trouble.

“This stuff is no more true for him than it is for me or Zach,” Fisher says of the claims about Spriggs.

O’Keefe adds, “He spent the last two years busing tables at the Yellow Deli in Vista, Calif.”

TREATMENT OF WOMEN The two say that men and women are given an equal voice in the community and are encouraged to speak their minds.

“Outspokenness is what keeps this lifestyle alive,” Fisher says.

And Deborah Wolfe, who has been a member of the group for 30 years, agrees.

“I would be happy to talk to any feminist women about the choices I made by having my six children,” she says.

Wolfe and her husband, Andrew, or “Sehyah,” were the first Twelve Tribes couple to arrive in Manitou Springs, traveling from a community in Island Pond, Vt., to establish a presence in Colorado because Andrew was born in 12 May 12, 2011

Fort Collins. (It is custom for leaders to return to their birthplace to set up a community.) They now live with the new community in Boulder, but one of their sons is a manager at the Maté Factor in Manitou Springs.

They acknowledge that natural childbirth at home with a midwife is preferred, but hospital deliveries are not uncommon, especially when there are complications, and those deliveries are completely at the discretion of the couple. Four of Deborah’s kids were delivered at a hospital, as was Fisher’s 18-month-old son, Roeh.

“Nothing in our life is forced,” Fisher says. “We’re not into condemning.”

Deborah says natural, medicationfree childbirth makes mothers even more connected to their babies.

“You work hard for that baby, and it helps that bonding process,” she says, adding that there are many alternatives for making childbirth more bearable, from relaxation techniques to having the support of family and close friends present.

As for contraception, Andrew Wolfe describes it as “limited, not prohibited,” and Deborah adds, “We want children.”

Natural forms of contraception are used, they say, during the months immediately following childbirth, for instance.

When asked about the goal of creating thousands of virginal males to serve as Messiah’s bride on Judgment Day, Andrew says the idea is to have a critical mass of followers by the time Jesus, or “Yahshua,” as they call him, returns. It goes back to a biblical verse about the rest of the world witnessing disciples’ love for one another on that day of reckoning, he says.

They agree that while homosexuality is discouraged, gays are not expelled from the group. The group has had members “struggle” with homosexuality, they say, and gays have joined the group in the past, although their sexual orientation, like their belongings and wealth, is something they are expected to leave behind when starting their new life.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY While the Twelve Tribes doesn’t subscribe to the strict biblical idea that the earth is only 6,000 years old, they don’t believe that man evolved from apes.

They teach their homeschooled children about subjects like physics and biology, but special emphasis is placed on music and communication skills like reading and writing.

Twelve Tribes members use computers for things like communication, bookkeeping, research and shopping, but not for getting the latest celebrity news.

“Sitcoms are for people who don’t have an entertaining life,” Fisher says, explaining that his community gets satis-

faction from discussions, music, dancing, hiking and other wholesome activities.

Asked about the allegations of child labor, Fisher says the group “abides by the laws of the land” and that some have misinterpreted the Twelve Tribes custom of involving kids in chores at an early age, just as was common on farms in past decades.

As for the child abuse claims, Fisher says the group disciplines youngsters not out of anger, but to provide guidance.

The word discipline, he says, refers to “being discipled, or being brought along by a master or a teacher. It’s not a punishment, it’s a correction, and it’s gaining access to the heart and the true bond made between student and teacher, parent and child.”

As an example, Andrew Wolfe describes a 3-year-old who is told not to run into the busy street in front of his house. When the child heads for the street anyway, a quick slap from the thin wooden rod, or what he calls a “spanking,” is appropriate.

“The consequences of getting spanked are much less than getting hit by a car,” he says.

He adds, however, that the smack is immediately followed by a hug, reassuring the child that he or she is loved. The rod is used instead of the hand because the hands are used for love, for the hug that follows, he says. Deborah adds that a spanking might also be warranted when a child takes cookies that he or she knows are being saved for social time.

RACISM CLAIMS Spriggs has been accused of saying inflammatory things about Martin Luther King and about slavery being a result of the biblical curse of Canaan.

Twelve Tribes leaders readily admit that they discourage interracial marriages, even though they say they welcome non-white family units to join their group.

Spriggs reportedly said King could not offer true freedom to blacks because of the biblical curse, but according to Andrew Wolfe, Spriggs simply meant that joining the Twelve Tribes is the only real path out of racism.

“We see this life of love as the ultimate way to do away with prejudice, and other efforts are not going to cut it,” he says.

Fisher says the Twelve Tribes has had some interracial marriages.

“If it’s true love, no one is going to stand between them,” he says.

But Andrew acknowledges that the group prefers to have blacks marry blacks and whites marry whites. He is quick to add that a black or Asian family is welcome to join the community.

“Our solution to the race problem is not to inter-marry everybody,” he says.

Fisher adds, “Our goal is not to cre-

ate one gray human being. The creator allowed man to be so diverse for a reason.”

As for other, non-restaurant occupations that are acceptable to the group, Fisher lists wood-working, produce delivery, construction and tree care as vocations that have been held by community members.

What about being a lawyer? A professional athlete?

“Our life is a life of living for each other,” Andrew says. “We glorify one another, not ourselves. We wouldn’t all be able to be on your team if you were a football player.”

And while the Twelve Tribes dismisses all other denominations, Andrew says, “we do not believe we are the only ones who will have eternal life.”

People will be judged on their own deeds, their own conscience, how they treated others, he says. Fisher adds that it will be about what is in their heart.

The group doesn’t subscribe to the traditional heaven/hell dichotomy, instead believing in “three eternal destinies,” including a “lake of fire” for the “filthy and unjust.”

But Fisher says those who are not members or who have never even heard of the Twelve Tribes are not necessarily headed for that lake.

“They’re judged on the highest standard they’re aware of,” he says.

Asked about whether members are expected to sever ties with their nonconforming family and friends when they join Twelve Tribes, Fisher points to his in-laws in an adjacent Yellow Deli booth, who do not belong to the group but remain part of his family’s life. He explains that joining the community requires you to put Yahshua ahead of everyone else, so that sometimes causes problems with people who used to exercise authority over you. In addition, he says, members sometimes don’t see their extended family and friends as much as they used to before joining the group.

If it gets to the point that family members are destructively set against Twelve Tribes, an individual may have to sever ties, they agree.

“Relationships with family are encouraged, unless the family is dead set against us,” Andrew Wolfe says.

His wife adds, “If it’s not bearing good fruit.”

Andrew delivers one final message, asking people to avoid judging Twelve Tribes on what they read online until they’ve had a chance to come into the Yellow Deli.

“We encourage people to come meet with us themselves,” he says.

Besides, Fisher concludes, one recent customer described their Reuben sandwich as the best in the world.

Divine, in fact.

Howard Dean talks taxes, Obama in Boulder

oward Dean’s run for the 2004 Democratic presidential nomination rewrote how politicians could raise funds, showing that a candidate could generate serious money through grassroots campaigns and thousands of small donations instead of relying on dozens of large ones. Though Dean’s infamous karate-chop-celebration scream after losing the Iowa caucus ended up costing him the primary to the über-generic John Kerry, he conDavid Accomazzo tinued to exert influence on national politics after being elected to chair the Democratic National Committee in 2005.

There, the one-time Vermont governor formulated a bold plan called the “50state strategy” to help Democrats win control of Congress in the 2006 general election. The plan, despite objections from Democratic insiders like Rahm Emmanuel, was a scorching success, netting Democrats a solid majority in the House and drawing even with Republicans in the Senate.

Barack Obama’s successful 2008 presidential run took a page out of Dean’s Internet fundraising book, and it’s noteworthy that without Dean leading the DNC, Democrats lost their majority in the House in 2010. Dean left politics in 2009 — speculations that Obama would select Dean for his Cabinet never came true — and has been working in the private sector ever since.

Dean came to Boulder last weekend to give the graduation speech for Naropa University. He had been to Boulder before and he likes the town’s politics, he said, noting that it was one of the few places in America where he felt conservative. The morning before the speech, he sat down with reporters in Naropa’s administration building and talked about the economy, health care, Boulder Weekly

higher education and what the future holds for new graduates. Dean says he is hopeful that the economy is rebounding.

“The economy is absolutely improving,” Dean said. “The problem is, the average person in America is always the first to feel the pain and the last to get out of the pain. And that’s been exacerbated by this notion that all the tax programs need to be for the wealthy, and that we need to cut programs for the average American first, which is nuts.”

He praised Barack Obama’s compromise on tax cuts at the end of 2010, when he agreed to extend the Bush-era tax cuts for Americans of all income levels in exchange for unemployment benefits.

Progressives despised it at the time, saying the president should have only extended the tax cuts for the lower and middle classes.

“I like it,” Dean said. “I think it makes no sense to give tax breaks to millionaires when you’re trying to cut social security or whatever, but I felt it was a good thing politically, because what the public wants is to get something done. … When a bill is passed that is a compromise, the president, politically, is almost always the winner.”

He also said that Obama would “likely” win the next election, and that the Paul Ryan budget could help deliver the election into Democratic hands.

“The Paul Ryan plan is just a disaster for [Republicans],” Dean said. “It basically gets rid of Medicare, turns Medicare into a private insurance company. Seventy percent of the country thinks it’s a bad idea, including a plurality of Republicans. So, as they did in 1994 when they took over, they’ve overreached their bounds. Americans want spending controls, but they want fairness, too, in society. There’s nothing fair about the right-wing platform.”

ast summer, the Boulder Theater and Fox Theatre joined forces under the name

Z2 Entertainment, and this week’s First Annual Blues and Roots Summit represents the most visible bloom on this new partnership. This inaugural festival represents what’s possible when both venues fully leverage their abilities.

Indeed, the entire weekend is a testament to their hard work, as it came together quite quickly. It began in November, when Z2 was approached by Media Mechanics, a group of veteran music and radio executives who, among other things, produce the House of Blues radio hour hosted by Dan Aykroyd (found on the Internet at Bluesmobile.com, and hosted locally Sunday mornings on 99.5 The Mountain).

Conversations progressed quickly, and by the beginning of the year they’d settled on a date and had started booking acts. In less than three months they’d assembled an all-star lineup that includes Sheryl Crow, Lucinda Williams, Leon Russell and world music artist Vieux Farka Touré, playing 16 May 12, 2011

over three nights at both the Fox and Boulder Theater.

“We’re pretty excited. We’ve scheduled both the Boulder Theater shows to start earlier and the Fox shows to start a little later so that people who buy the VIP pass — which allows you into all the events — can catch two shows a night,” says Cheryl Liguori, former Boulder Theater general manager and now CEO of Z2. “The vision, which will be more apparent next year, is to really engage the blues audience and make this a destination for blues lovers across the country, to have workshops, and even maybe mentorship programs for younger blues lovers.”

They’re expecting around 4,000 people to attend the five shows, with VIP pass holders ($325) getting reserved seats at both venues, a preferential entrance and limitededition silk-screen posters and t-shirts. If this is what they can accomplish in three months, think what they could come up with given a whole year’s preparation.

“We’re really excited to see how we can grow this and help it reach its full potential with all the different components we think we can add in the years to come,” Liguori says. “Is there potential to explore other mini-festivals like this that are centered in Boulder? Sure.”

The bill is so strong it’s hard to believe they pulled it together so quickly. Sheryl Crow is supporting last year’s Billboard-topping rock album, 100 Miles From Memphis, which mixes her sunny roots rock with blue-eyed soul, reminiscent of Dusty Springfield’s classic, Dusty in Memphis.

Leon Russell is riding high after his 2010 collaboration with Elton John, The Union, and he’s been going strong, though in relative obscurity, for years. His 2007 album Angel in Disguise was an underappreciated return to the Okie rock stomp and southern-fried rock that made him famous in the ’70s.

However, for many, the big draw will be Lucinda Williams, who kicks off the festival with the late show Friday night.

The daughter of a professor/poet, Williams released her first album, Ramblin’ On My Mind, in 1979, featuring an acoustic collection of old blues, country, folk and Cajun songs.

She spent the next two decades making music that traverses the entire expanse of what’s now called Americana, releasing critically lauded albums that were the commercial equivalent of a tree falling in the forest. Her breakthrough came with her Grammy-winning masterpiece, 1998’s Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, an album that took nearly six years and underwent several iterations, including the scrapping and re-recording of an entire album’s worth of material (twice) after a falling out with her guitarist/producer Gurf Morlix.

A wonderful writer, Williams possesses a gift for lyrical economy and precision. Her powerful images and sentiments can fill a room with but a few words. Her music is unbound by genre and frequently strives for a coarseness and grit that suits her gruff but evocative voice. While her subsequent five albums haven’t enjoyed the same level of commercial success, they haven’t sacrificed any of their power. But that hardly means nothing’s changed.

After years of troubled and broken it’s an album that while it explores death relations that provided lots of fodder for (on “Copenhagen,” about her late manher songwriting, Williams found love ager who died in the Danish city, and with former Universal Music executive “Seeing Black” about suicide) is ultiTom Overby. unsurprising that Williams has been fielding lots of questions about her career surviving her new-found marital bliss. Like saying “I do” wiped out the 58 years that came before it.

“I’m not happy all the time. Sorry, but nobody can make anybody happy 24 hours a day. There’s plenty of other stuff to be unhappy about,” she laughs. “That’s kind of the irony of it. When you look back at my songs, I don’t have that many that are sweet, kinda real love songs, but I’ve always been drawn to them … [probably because] they’re hard to do without sounding all mushy and sugar-coated.”

But finding some comfort and happiness (see Blessed’s tender “Sweet Love”) won’t temper her drive to create. Indeed, she has several songs leftover from the Blessed sessions and is considering touring less on this album so that she can get back into the studio quicker, since the notoriously laborious Williams is feeling as prolific as at any time in her career.

“I want to continue writing,” she says. “Whatever’s going on in my life on the exterior, whether I’m with somebody or not, or whatever, I’m not going to quit writing.”

The blues don’t quit just because you aren’t feeling them as poignantly as before.

Another day in the life of Atmosphere

hen you combine the prestige of being a headlining MC, the ego of a smartass working stiff, a career that has only grown over two decades and a show at the Fox that immediately sold out months in advance, one might assume that Sean Daley (aka Slug), the voice of hip-hop duo Atmosphere, has turned all his dreams into reality.

But what really happens in Daley’s head as it rests on hotel pillows between tour stops?

In a phone conversation with Boulder Weekly, Daley lazes on a hotel bed in El Paso as he describes his latest memorable dream: a tornado filled with sharks, the most terrifying natural disaster spewing hordes of the most terrifying animal across the countryside.

Daley admits the shark tornado is a combination of a running joke and medication he’s taking to curb an established cigarette habit. He said he rarely dreams of making music, occasionally about performing it — but if he were to go back 15 years and dream of his present life, that image would be nearly as farfetched as supercatastrophe weather patterns. It’s not because of a decadent lifestyle or unexpected fame and glory. Sometimes, life is just too real.

“I think maybe if the dream was me in the back of a limo with a bunch of chicks and a fat gold chain on — 15 years ago, I might have believed that dream,” Daley says. “But if the dream actually would have shown what this life is really like, I would have been like, ‘No way. So I’m a rapper, but I have to find a McDonald’s so I can have a decent place to take a bowel movement because the venue doesn’t have doors on the stalls?’ There’s no way you could have convinced me that this is what it actually would have looked like.”

Atmosphere is perhaps the most well-known “underground” hip-hop group, and Daley is one of the

scene’s most venerable elders. It may remain this way for years, as Daley continues to tirelessly tour and release new material with help from the equally talented Anthony “Ant” Davis managing the instrumentals.

Atmosphere established themselves as an intelligent blue-collar champion with their 1997 debut, the Overcast! EP, and furthered their brand of humor, sympathy for struggle and distaste for pretension with each subsequent release (2010’s double-EP release, To All My Friends, Blood Makes the Blade Holy, grabbed the No. 2 spot on iTunes, and Daley has grown his hometown record label, Rhymesayers Entertainment, to include epic talent such as Brother Ali, DJ Abilities, MF DOOM, P.O.S. and Eyedea, who passed last year).

But no amount of notoriety has dulled Daley’s perspective on life’s hardships. Growing up in a workingclass Minnesota neighborhood and with his own children to support, Daley’s best works recall perfect moments of imperfection. Double-shift diner waitresses, strung-out addicts in bathtubs, world-weary single parents and sinister nightlife creepers are just a few of the characters who populate his lyrics. No matter how dark the situation, the setting is painted so vividly that

listeners are beckoned to go to that place and experience it anyway.

It’s hard to imagine Daley being anywhere other than the bus stops, gas stations and the wintery Midwest streets he describes in between sharp-pointed shittalking and gentle self-loathing. There’s no doubt he has been the hungover party leftover, the desperate bachelor, or the grimacing face of rejection. For example, he refers to 2005’s You Can’t Imagine How Much Fun We’re Having as “the mohawk record” because of the hairdo he sports on the album’s cover, a consequence of heavy drinking and hair falling out in clumps.

And though the characters are often imaginary (Daley says 95 percent of his stories are fictional), it’s obvious he has been there, met caricatures of beauty and ugliness, felt the emotion that drives those people upwards and downwards and can relate it all in a seamless lyrical flow.

“The message is honest to who I am, but the story I tell to achieve that message, most of the time I made it up,” Daley says. “Granted, it doesn’t just pop out of my imagination out of nowhere. They’re based on ideas that I understand, based on stories I’ve seen or experienced, but I change the story. To be fair, it’s not okay for me to implicate my friends or to embarrass anybody other than myself.”

Now that he’s a few lessons wiser, it’s no wonder he will be remembered as one of this generation’s great storytellers. With momentum that will carry him well into the future and a live performance that has stepped well beyond a braggart and a turntablist, Daley will continue to keep it real.

“I’m in a fortunate position,” Daley says. “I don’t have to be anything that I’m not for anybody. I know a lot of rappers, and a lot of them don’t have that freedom, and I don’t take that for granted.”

Black Label Society’s Zakk Wylde on Ozzy, sobriety and playing live

A

lot of things surrounding Zakk Wylde’s life and his music were different when he and his band, Black Label Society, made their latest studio CD, Order of the Black.

Wylde had recovered from a 2009 bout with serious blood clots, quit drinking (as part of his blood clot treatment regimen) and been dismissed as Ozzy Osbourne’s primary songwriting collaborator and guitarist. Plus, for the first time, Wylde had his own studio in which to record Order of the Black.

For some artists, any one of those sort of events would directly influence a new CD and make it stand out from others in their catalog.

For Wylde and his bandmates, bassist John DeServio, drummer Will Hunt and guitarist Nick Catanese, it was just business as usual.

“We got a stack of tunes and then we focused in on the ones we wanted to do. That was it,” Wylde says in a recent interview. “We went in there [the studio, dubbed ‘The Bunker’] and recorded it just like we did all the other ones. It took us 94 days from beginning to end.”

The matter-of-fact way Wylde characterizes Order of the Black will probably be welcome news to his fans.

While some artists thrive on progression and change, Wylde — and Black Label’s fans — seem just fine if the band stays the course and just continues to deliver

the kind of meat-and-potatoes mix of metalish rockers (“Crazy Horse” and “Southern Dissolution”) and burly ballads (“Darkest Days” and “Time Waits For No One.”) that has been the Black Label Society signature from day one.

Wylde, in fact, exhibited a pretty casual attitude about all of the events of the past couple of years.

The first of the events was Osbourne’s decision a couple of years ago to find a new guitarist and songwriting partner, a role Wylde had held for nearly 20 years, beginning with Osbourne’s 1988 album, No Rest For The Wicked.

Osbourne has said he was worried his music was starting to sound too much like Black Label Society.

“Ozzy doesn’t have to explain himself to me at all,” Wylde says. “It’s just like ‘Zakk, it’s starting to sound like this. I’m going to make a change.’ I’m like ‘All right, Ozz, you’ve got it, buddy. If you need me to go feed the dogs or something, give me a call.’

“Our relationship is bigger than music anyway,” he says. “He’s godfather to my boy and everything.”

Wylde also doesn’t seem fazed by his blood clot scare or the changes in his lifestyle that it necessitated — namely giving up his rather famous love for beer and other alcoholic beverages.

After experiencing pain in his calf for a week or so, Wylde decided to visit an emergency room at a

hospital in Eugene, Ore. “I knew I didn’t break anything,” Wylde says. “I thought, ‘I’ve pulled a ligament or I tore a tendon or something, because I’ve been icing this thing down for over a week. The pain’s not going away. And I’ve been staying off of it. I’ve been elevating my leg. This is ridiculous, man.’ So that’s when I went in there and they checked me out, and they were like, ‘Dude, you have a massive blood clot behind your leg.’”

Wylde was started on a regimen of the blood thinner Coudamin, and because alcohol also thins the blood, he was told in no uncertain terms that his drinking days needed to end. Wylde said he had no troubles going alcohol-free.

“I said ‘All right, never mind,’” he says. “Let me put it this way, it’s just like someone was like, ‘Are you with the 12-step program?’ I go, ‘12-step? I’ve got the one-step Black Label program. That’s it. You’re done.

Stop.’”

Wylde has been, for the most part, clot-free. He had to postpone a couple of shows last fall when he had a recurrence of the clots, but was able to resume the tour shortly afterward.

He also was able to put together a new acoustic Black Label Society CD, The Song Is Not The Same.

Released on May 3, it featured primarily unplugged versions of songs from Order of the Black. And now he’s back on tour with Black Label Society, headlining Fuse’s “Uranium Tour.”

Wylde wasn’t sure what the set list would be for this tour, noting that he usually looks for input from fans online to help decide what to play. With his extensive catalog of songs, it is not easy to narrow the list.

“Now that this is the eighth album, I mean it’s eight records to choose material from,” he says. “Yeah, how do the Rolling Stones come up with a set list? If it was up to them, the Stones would be up there for 15 hours.”

The bodies and the laughs pile up in Longmont

id you know that the Longmont Theatre Company has been around for 53 years? That means that for more than the past five decades, 600 months or 18,250 days, depending on which unit of measure one prefers, the Longmont Theatre Company has been bringing theatre to life in Boulder County. In a time when everything from personal electronics to marriage seems to be becoming increasingly disposable, that kind of dedication and perseverance deserves a big round of applause all its own.

Housed in the Longmont Performing Arts Center on Main Street, the Longmont Theatre Company is front and center in L-town. A veritable cornucopia of bars and restaurants surround the performing arts center, making dinner-and-a-show a simple proposition. Add to its prime location that tickets to a Longmont Theatre Company production are always quite reasonably priced, and you quickly start to run out of reasons not to turn off the TV for a night and go take in some genuine, live theatre.

The Longmont Theatre Company’s latest is The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940. Don’t let the name fool you; The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940 is not a musical at all. It is a silly, loping, lighthearted whodunit, a period farce that also sends up show business types by parading stereotype after stereotype across the stage.

On, of course, a dark and stormy night in 1940 during a blizzard that threatens to completely shut down the Eastern seaboard, wealthy patron of the arts Elsa Von Grossenknueten (Brie Michaels) and her trusty Teutonic maid, Helsa Wenzel ( Julie Marino), prepare to host a private “backers audition”

of a new musical. Elsa is all silver spoon, upper-crusty frippery, a classic wealthy dowager type, and Helsa is as severe and meticulous as one could hope from a traditional German servant.

The director hoping to convince Mrs. Grossenknueten to invest in the new musical is one Mr. Ken de la Maize (Steven Rausch), a name-dropping artiste who adores describing theatre using such florid language as “life distilled to the pure, clear ring of truth.” The creative team behind the musical is Hopewell and Roth. Roger Hopewell (Evan Marquez) is a preening, bitchy homosexual who can barely tolerate his partner, Bernice Roth (Micah Abram), a seven-martini-lunch lush who will dramatically drop everything in order to work on a new lyric that’s just popped into her head.

immediately catch the eye of struggling comedian Eddie McCuen (Chris Martinez), the kind of showbiz type who will take any audition he can get, even if it requires talents he isn’t certain he has. Add in an Irish tenor with a lilting, old country brogue, Patrick O’Reilly (Peter Johnson), and a snooty producer, Marjorie Baverstock (Hope Weiss), who insists on describing most everything as “divine” but pronounces the word “di-voon” for the sake of pointless affectation, and you have just about every theatre caricature under the sun (or, in this case, the moon).

As soon as The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940 starts, the bodies begin to pile up.

While the theatre people prepare to perform for Mrs. Grossenknueten, undercover cop Michael Kelly (Marcus Turner) strives to unmask the murderer hiding among them.

Stabbings and secret passageways play big parts in the proceedings, and more than one character turns out to not be exactly who or what they appear.

Though absent from the stage for long stretches, Peter Johnson had me slapping my knee more than once. Cicely Galm and Chris Martinez also deserve to be singled out for their remarkably natural and confident performances. The real stars of the show, however, are the set and costume design, both of which are the most responsible for transporting the audience to 1940 New York. The sets were designed

by Ricky Lee Landrum (also the director), Deborah G. Zarich and Mike Zarich, and Judy Ernst designed the costumes.

For a few laughs and a dash of mystery, all while supporting a local theatre company, you won’t do any better than The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940.

“MOAB, MOAB, MOAB.” That’s about all you hear this time of year as mountain bike enthusiasts pack up their rigs, load the bikes on top and head west into the Utah desert. And while Moab does sound nice, those who are looking for something a bit different can turn their spring mountain bike road trips into exploratory missions, leaving the crowds behind. Here are some alternative destinations that make for great riding, camping and are just far enough away to feel like you’re the first one to discover them. Go soon because 20 years ago, Moab felt the same way. Secrets, especially singletrack secrets, never last.

Rabbit Valley — The Moab-fixated hordes blast by Rabbit Valley as they head west to the red rocks of Utah.

But for those who like the desert and don’t mind pulling off the road before Moab, this destination on the Colorado/ Utah border is worth the trip from Boulder. Rabbit Valley has always been popular with rednecks: They camp in the

area and rip around on dirt bikes and ATVs. For some that’s a turn-off. But it’s worth remembering that dirt bikers don’t care what you ride, and you’ll not get a heaping helping of hiker attitude from any of them. In fact, they might even offer you a cold beer, as they’re no strangers to the fun that can be had on two wheels. During weekdays, Rabbit Valley is deserted. The emptiness is complemented by ample riding, including the easy singletrack of Trails 4 and 5 and more challenging Western Rim Trail, an 18-mile loop that features fantastic views of the Colorado River.

Also highly recommended are the ripping singletrack of Zion Curtain, a 20-mile ride, and Rabbit Valley West’s trails, including the Westwater Mesa/Overlook trail.

Indian Creek/Waterton Canyon — With spring upon us, Front Range mountain biking trails are rapidly drying out and coming into form. Unfortunately, if you live in Boulder, your singletrack choices are limited. That’s not the see SECRETS Page 30

Jefferson County has invested in plenty of multi-use trails and welcomes mountain bikers. This approach is reason enough to take your bike south of Morrison to sample some of the great riding that our neighbors have developed. A great place to start is the Indian Creek/Waterton Canyon trail.

Combining U.S. Forest Service trails with access via Denver Water District lands, as well as some singletrack inside Roxborough State Park, you’ll ride through terrain that’s home to bighorn sheep, mule deer and more than 40 species of birds. It’s a Front Range gem, which also takes in a part of the Colorado Trail. Once you’re done with riding, bust out the pocketbook for lunch or a beer at the nearby Waterton Tavern.

Abajo Mountains — Too far south and too quiet for the Moab crowd, Monticello sits at the base of the Abajo (or Blue) Mountains. This small range features a variety of 4×4 roads, trails and tracks that climb from the desert into the peaks, the tallest of which, Abajo, stands at 11,360 feet. Monticello’s 7,066-foot elevation means that it’s possible to ride comfortably here even in the scorching heat of mid-summer — but plan on being challenged. The better rides feature steep singletrack climbs, technical descents and enough elevation gain to make you puke. That doesn’t mean the riding is a complete

suffer-fest. There’s plenty of mellow action, too, including the option to use car shuttles on some of the longer rides. But if you want to taste the best that the Blues have to offer, you better be ready to earn it. Take the Shay Ridge Trail, which tops out at approximately 11,000 feet, high enough to leave even strong riders gasping. Or Trail 20, a 50-mile slog that was created by dirt bikers, but which also gives those beasts who thought Shay was too easy the opportunity to test themselves. For the rest of us, there are a variety of singletrack options as well as easy cruisers like Geyser Pass Road, which crosses the range.

Happy Jack/Pole Mountain — The Happy Jack area features singletrack Wyoming style, with fast, rolling terrain north of Fort Collins. This area is used for XC skiing in the winter, with terrain that translates perfectly into cross-country mountain biking in the summer. Riding here features plenty of loops, multiple spurs and options in a classic western setting of aspens, mountain meadows and pine forests. This area comes into form earlier than Colorado’s mountain riding thanks to lower snowfall totals during the winter and relatively lower elevations overall, and the looping system makes it perfect for getting into shape before you go to Crested Butte or, well, Moab.

Italian nonnas’ secret to cooking

f the nonna as master cook has become something of a stereotype (after all, excellent, thrifty and industrious grandmas can be found in kitchens around the world), American chef Jessica Theroux at least approaches the topic with nuance and plenty of solid evidence.

In Cooking with Italian Grandmothers: Recipes and Stories from Tuscany to Sicily (Welcome Books, $40), Theroux documents a year spent traveling the country, gleaning the foodways of 12 accomplished cooks who shared their secrets, some of which were not confined to the cooking. Themes of hardship and resilience co-exist with the tortellini and ricotta.

“The generation that I was dealing with had endured a lot of poverty ... and two world wars,” Theroux said. “So much of what these women do is nurture and love, but there also is that depth of coming through hard times. I wasn’t expecting to find that, but I think it added to the richness of the experience.”

Her book is equal parts travelogue, photo essay and cookbook, with dozens of recipes — exotic, authentic and accessible in equal parts — that she has reinterpreted for Americans. Each chapter zeroes in on one woman and the dishes she cooks from her respective region.

The personalities are distinctive, including generous and artistic Mary from Tuscany; tight-lipped Maria, a ricotta-maker from Sicily; and the gentle, generous spirit of very old Armida from Lunigiana, whom Theroux realized she would never see again.

For the record, not all the women she met were great cooks. Theroux laughingly recalled some “horror stories” of women (not documented in the book) who forced her to eat all their family dishes — “none of which were very good.”

One of the Italian grandmothers that Jessica Theroux spent time with, Armida from Fosdinovo, Lunigiana, made this cake (called la pignolata in Italian) for her when she was homesick. “[Armida] thought that her favorite childhood dessert, a simple cake filled with pine nuts and lemon zest, was all I needed. She was right.” Adapted from Cooking with Italian Grandmothers, the recipe makes a low cake.

Ingredients: 1 stick (1/2 cup) butter, softened 1/3 cup plus 1 tbsp. sugar 2 tsp. grated lemon zest 1/4 tps. finely chopped fresh rosemary 1 egg, separated, plus 1 egg yolk 1/8 tsp. salt 1 1/4 cups flour 1/2 cup plus 2 tbsp. lightly toasted pine nuts sons she learned about paying attention to ingredients, especially local ones, and understanding the history of the dishes you are preparing.

But it’s worth noting what Theroux named as the biggest and most surprising influence on her cooking.

“Cooking with love,” she said firmly. “It’s a very interesting concept. What I learned there was that ... in the act of cooking, you’re evoking the memory and thought of someone you love and transferring that to the food. It sounds very simple, but more than any technique I have ever learned it profoundly changes the food.”

“It’s the simplest thing,” Theroux said, “and it makes the biggest difference.”

Pine Nut Biscuit Cake Prep: 20 minutes Rest: 30 minutes Cook: 40 minutes Servings: 8

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Cream together the butter and 1/3 cup of the sugar in a medium bowl; stir in the lemon zest, rosemary, 2 egg yolks and salt.

Stir in the flour and 1/2 cup of the pine nuts. (You may need to use your hands to form a workable dough.) Using your knuckles, press dough as evenly as possible into a buttered 9-inch round cake pan.

Cover tightly with plastic wrap; let dough rest 30 minutes at room temperature or up to 24 hours in the refrigerator.

Just before baking, brush with egg white, sprinkle dough with remaining 2 tablespoons pine nuts and remaining 1 tablespoon sugar. Bake until the thin cake has turned a light nutty brown and pulls away from edges of the pan, 40-50 minutes. Set aside to cool; slice into thin wedges. (c) 2011, Chicago Tribune.

could give you a thousand reasons why you will love this week’s treat, but then I would have to take you out behind the woodshed and ... well, I can’t reveal the torture methods inflicted on people who find out my Dessert Diva secrets. But I will tell you that tofu, calzones, sugar cane and Placido Domingo are involved.

Brutal, just brutal!

Instead, I will give you one big reason: Dark Chocolate Crackle Cookies. Say no more, right?

If my friends out there in Boulder land don’t make and devour these little bites of love, well, I wash my hands of you, another reason to take you out behind the woodshed.

These cookies are often made around the holidays, but I think May is the perfect time for them. Perfect for your first barbeque or picnic of the year. Not only are they delicious, but the powdered sugar crackle top makes a nice can’t-resist-at-least-one presentation.

When you bite into these you will see they are somewhere between a cake, a brownie and a cookie. They pack a lot of flavor for a recipe with not too many ingredients. And, of course, because they are dark chocolate, they contain antioxidants, which protect our cute little bods from free radicals, lower our blood pressure and help keep our hearts nice and healthy.

Seems like a lot of pressure for chocolate, but I think it can handle it. You can’t taste that great and please so many palates without knowing you will carry some responsibility along with it.

These cookies are fun to make, so the endorphin magic begins long before you even ingest them. This is turning out to be one magic cookie, if you take all I have to say as gospel. It’s alright, I stand behind my claims. Just make them,

and you, too, will be drinking the Kool-Aid. Don’t worry about the woodshed. I’m not sure I’ve ever even seen a woodshed, just been watching Mob Wives on VH1 and felt the need to make some empty threats.

Now, follow the directions, put some love into it and invite me over when it’s done.

Dark Chocolate Crackle Cookies 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar 1/2 cup canola oil 1/2 cup dark chocolate cocoa powder 1 tsp. almond extract 3 eggs 1 3/4 cups all purpose flour 1 tsp. baking powder 1/4 tsp. salt 3/4 cup dark chocolate chips 1/2 cup powdered sugar

Stir together sugar and oil. Add in cocoa powder until well blended.

Mix in eggs and almond extract.

In small bowl, combine flour, baking powder and salt, mix dry ingredients into wet ingredients, stirring until well-combined. Fold in chocolate chips. Cover and refrigerate for at least two hours.

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Line cookie sheets with parchment paper.

Place powdered sugar in small bowl.

Scoop out small teaspoon of dough, drop in sugar and roll until covered.

Place on baking sheet, about two to three inches apart.

Bake for 9-11 minutes, until just set. Take out of oven and let rest on cookie sheet about five minutes. Take off, cool on wire rack or parchment paper. Enjoy!

Note: You can use regular cocoa powder and semi-sweet chocolate chips. Dark chocolate is just a direction, use what you like!

t this point in the Marvel Comicsderived superhero cycle, audiences can be forgiven for feeling a tad worn out, both for reasons of quality and quantity. My rear end’s thor just thinking about how many more we have coming. Yet sometimes a product exceeds expectations.

I like Thor, for example. This is remarkable, considering the lameness of the first 25 minutes of director Kenneth Branagh’s adaptation of the Marvel character introduced in 1962.

A stolid visual stylist at best, Branagh lays out the early scenes in this interplanetary saga with as little cinematic interest as is humanly and digitally possible. Computer-generated hordes mill around while the King of Asgard gives a speech; crushing action sequences full of fire and ice place the actors far too close to the camera; hacky, nervous editing (by Paul Rubell) neither propels nor maximizes the flow of the action.

Then, as if by decree from the Beard of Odin itself, your X-Men Origins headache recedes, the mighty intergalactic Thunder God travels to Earth, and Thor acquires a sense of humor and becomes that thing that all creatures from all realms crave: a good time. The last 25 minutes of Thor aren’t much better than the first. But that hour in between — tasty, funny, robustly acted — more than compensates.

It helps having strong actors fully invested in their expositional blather. On the planet Asgard, King Odin

(Anthony Hopkins) and queen Frigga (Rene Russo, barely verbal) must choose an heir to the throne.

Odin’s options come down to Son One, Thor, a hottempered pinup played by Chris Hemsworth, and his undermining brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston, looking like Shakespeare’s Iago). Thor’s impetuous streak leads his posse into battle with the Frost Giants from the neighboring planet Jotunheim, pronounced “Vodenheim,” which sounds like a classy Norwegian writers retreat but is in fact a cold and forbidding place, much like the University of Minnesota’s Duluth

o few ensemble-driven AfricanAmerican films make it to market — whether with familiar faces or unknowns — that the ones that do get out of the gate provoke a weird degree of scrutiny regarding what they have to say about the black experience. Who needs the pressure? Movies such as the first Barbershop succeed not because they feel important or thesis-heavy, but because they bring the commercial and the sociologically astute cultural touch to a bagful of characters.

This brings us to Jumping the Broom, a picture that gave me considerable satisfaction, partly because it wears its themes of trust and belief and faith lightly and easily, while taking them seriously.

On the surface, director Salim Akil’s comedy-drama appears to have a lot in common with Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married? pictures, in which a vacation gathering brings domestic and personal crises to the fore. But this is Tyler Perry with far fewer mood swings, and it works on a more relaxed and easygoing vibe.

The setup: pure formula. Hotshot Manhattan corporate attorney Sabrina Watson, played by Paula Patton, comes from money and from parents — played

Banished for his bloodthirsty actions, Thor and his mighty hammer are whooshed to New Mexico, where the more engaging half of Thor unfolds. Astrophysics research team members played by Natalie Portman, Stellan Skarsgard and Kat “Just Gliding Through” Dennings have their eyes on the skies, when down comes this hunk of hero. He’s a space-Norse fish out of water, in need of a comeuppance before he can become a true hero. In one choice bit, he charges into a pet store unsuccessfully demanding a horse. (The screenplay starts with Thor’s arrival and then flashes back to Asgard and Jotunheim.)

As with the first Iron Man, it’s the humor that seals the deal, not the action. Branagh’s strengths clearly lie in the interpersonal scheming and glowering between Thor and crimson-eyed lizard baddie Laufey (Colm Feore), and the sibling rivalry between Thor and Loki, a relationship of welcome ambiguity. As Odin, Hopkins brings purpose and steel to what could have been a routine assignment. As for the hammer, well, it’s a pip: It works like a supersonic boomerang, and as someone says, “’Tis a fit companion for a king.” Hemsworth was a fine pick for this role.

He’ll be back on screen next summer in the all-star Marvel bash The Avengers.

Brooklyn Bridge. He’s the overprotected son of a postal clerk (Loretta Devine) struggling with anger management. The high-hats meet the low-downs for the first time at the extravagant Martha’s Vineyard wedding.

Devine’s character brings the ancestral marriage broom for the newlyweds to mark their new life. Bassett’s elegantly controlling hostess will not have it.

The outcome of Jumping the Broom takes the word “preordained” to new heights. By most standards this is a very churchy picture, its story hinging on the premise that after one too many dead-end one-night-stands, Sabrina makes a deal with God to lay off the intercourse until marriage if He match-makes her the right match. Producer Tracey E. Edmonds describes the

project as “faith-based”; one of Edmonds’ co-producers, T.D. Jakes, runs the Dallas mega-church known as The Potter’s House and plays the preacher in the climactic wedding scene. This we get after all the obstacles and doubts have been shelved, and the various discreet hook-ups among the supporting characters have been either acted upon or quashed.

The film works because the screenwriters, Elizabeth Hunter and Arlene Gibbs, have a knack for juggling a dozen-plus major characters without succumbing to the obvious class-warfare gags every 90 seconds. Jumping the Broom may be too low-key to be a hit, but I hope I’m wrong. The cast maximizes each scene. On the Watson side, we’re deep into a realm of wealth and privilege that will strike much of the target audience as a fairy tale, just as the rarefied air of rom-com It’s Complicated struck some viewers as galling. Here, though, the Devine character’s response to the Vineyard (she’s offended at being picked up at the airport by a chauffeur, rather than a member of the host family) becomes part of the running joke.

It’s a relatable one. While the movie is nothing special visually, and it delivers more endings than a cat has lives, the people on screen more than compensate.

In 1975 in Brooklyn, 18-year-old Brian is killing time, pulling off petty crimes. Brian works for Whitey at the failing Lafayette movie theater. Owing money to local mobsters, Whitey calls in a favor to an old friend who works with The Rolling Stones. They come up with a deal to have the Stones play at Whitey’s theater for one night only before their gig at Madison Square Garden, and Brian is put in charge of getting the word out to everyone in the neighborhood.
