Highroad Why Paul Ryan should sit down and be very quiet

or nearly half a century now, America’s middle-class working families have been pummeled by corporate greedmeisters and their political henchmen.

Indeed, in just the last decade, the typical median-income family has lost 60 percent of their wealth. Haven’t they been punished enough?

No, says House Speaker Paul Ryan. Along with other top

Republican leaders of Congress, he intends to slash the social security money that middle-class and lowincome workers depend on, and he ultimately is out to kill it altogether.

Dependence on such public “entitlements,” he preaches, weakens our nation’s morality.

Entitlements? Social security isn’t a welfare program — regular working people pay a 12 percent tax on every dime of their wages into this public pension fund year after year. They earn their retirement!

Morality? Social security embodies America’s core moral value of fairness and our society’s commitment to the common good. And it works — before it was enacted, half of all American’s spent their “golden years” in poverty. Social security has saved the great majority of us from old-age

penury. Where is the morality in taking this earned retirement and modicum of dignity from millions?

Besides, a sermon on the morality of entitlements should never come from a congress critter’s mouth.

Speaker Ryan himself wallows in a mud pit of congressional entitlements that working stiffs couldn’t imagine getting: A $223,500 annual paycheck, free limousine and chauffeur, a maximum-coverage health plan, a tax-paid PR agent, lavish expense account, free travel... and, of course, a platinumlevel congressional retirement program funded by the very taxpayers who’s social security he’s out to kill.

Yet Ryan wonders why Congress’ public approval rating is plummeting toward single digits.

March for Science focused mostly on climate science and Trump’s proposed budget cuts. Local jobs will be on the line if the cuts go through. Moreover many climate scientists consider climate change to be an existential issue.

But the GMO issue the marchers failed to address is also existential.

The attack on scientific agriculture and GMOs is a much more immediate threat to humanity than the dangers posed by climate change. That’s because the consequences of climate change unfold in slow motion and there is ample time, decades and in some cases centuries, to adapt to them, while the consequences of falling behind in the Malthusian race between population growth and agricultural productivity are a clear and present danger.

If you have any doubt about the terrible urgency of winning this race, consider just one number: 80 million. That’s the number of people by which Earth’s population increases each year. The first time local activists tried to get GMOs banned in Boulder County was in 2003. Since then the world’s population has increased by more than one billion.

So far American farmers have been winning the race, in no small part thanks to scientific agriculture and genetically engineered crops, and despite the efforts of anti-science politicians like Jones and Gardner. In 2016 the American corn crop averaged 174.6 bushels an acre a new national record and up from 126.7 bushels an acre in 1997, the year before Roundup Ready corn was introduced.

In the light of all this you would think the local marchers for science would have been raising hell in front of the county courthouse; the ban is a perfect example of the politicization of science the march was intended to protest.

But not a word was heard or a protest sign raised.

The marchers need to ask themselves this: By ignoring the attack on GMOs were they tacitly approving it?

Were they marching for science or for political science?

sensus” is a measure of the weight of scientific evidence, the consensus on GMOs is more compelling and empirically supported than the one on climate change.

Jones and Gardner had plenty of empirical evidence available to them before they voted to ban GMOs, but they chose to spit on it.

They knew that by banning Bt and Roundup Ready corn and sugar beets, the farmers planting those crops on county open space would have to use alternate combinations of pesticides that were five to nine times more toxic.

They knew that banning Roundup Ready corn and beets meant farmers couldn’t use strip till (or minimum till) farming, and as a consequence will have to burn four times more diesel fuel than they would otherwise, and will have nine times more water loss from plowing. They knew that the carbon dioxide released from the soil by conventional tillage is 3,000 pounds per acre, as opposed to 500 pounds per acre with minimum tillage.

And they knew that they were throwing all those benefits away in order to prevent the application of a thumping one quart of Roundup (aka glyphosate) per acre per year to the corn and sugar beet fields.

(Roundup is one of the most benign herbicides known to science. Millions of homeowners spray more of it on their driveways in a weekend than a Boulder County farmer will spray on an acre of ground in a year.)

Jones and Gardner knew these facts because they were all contained in a report prepared for them by agronomists (aka scientists) at the County Parks and Open Space Department and the Colorado State University Extension.

Jones and Gardner’s reaction to that report was to try to suppress it.

Major reductions in pesticide and diesel fuel use, in CO2 release and water loss, yet Jones and Gardner have the temerity to portray themselves as God’s gift to “sustainability.”

That claim is also an affront to science — and a monument to their hypocrisy.

Protesters on oil rigs

I must wholeheartedly agree with the letter from Heather Miyazawa [Re: Letters, April 13] regarding “protesters” trying to interfere with oil rig operations!! My three brothers and I and my dad have about 100 years of oil field experience between us, and believe me — AN OIL RIG IS NO PLACE FOR THE UNTRAINED!!! There are a million different ways to get hurt or killed, so you protester-types, PLEASE keep your distance!!

The citizens are being heard Boulder City Council deserves our thanks for its serious and considered approach to the latest Xcel offers at the Council meeting on April 17. The community of Boulder came out in numbers to show its support for the muni effort.

And the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) also heard the citizens, loud and clear.

At the April 19th PUC proceedings, Chairman Ackerman announced that he had watched the entire council meeting. The other commissioners indicated that they had also been following the meeting closely. They know how much we care about this.

Chairman Ackerman asked that the public think about this as being similar to a divorce proceeding, with the PUC serving as the body responsible for ensuring the fair division of utility assets. He emphasized that the PUC agrees that Boulder has a right to municipalize. He also: • acknowledged that the citizens feel that the muni effort has taken an inordinate amount of time and now want to see results • acknowledged the complexities of this case • emphasized the PUC’s purpose as, “ensuring due process for all parties in the pursuit of safe, reliable, and effective electric service” The discussions and decisions made after his remarks indicate that this commission wants to do the right thing, and that the citizens of Boulder are being heard. The commissioners want to move the process forward, and they want to find ways to help the public understand the process. I, for one, see this as a good thing. Regardless of how the Camera might choose to spin it, the citizens had a good day at the PUC. Amber Hess/Boulder

Is thinking such a problem?

We now have a man in the White House who doesn’t have to think or

While at a nice dinner at Mar-a-Lago our common-man’s billionaire president decided to bomb Yemen which killed one American, one child and an unknown number of militants... Shoots from the hip. All Trump picks for critical offices were hastily made to either pay off contributors or piss off liberals... No thinking required.

After gulping large tainted chunks of ideological hearsay from Breitbart news and Rush Limbaugh denying climate change, our gerrymanderd peoples choice for leader appointed Scott Pruitt to head the EPA because neither Pruitt nor Trump have any interest in scientific data or even looking out the window from Mar-a-Lago to witness the sea rising around the hotel foundation. I guess we should thank our federalist voting system that we have a non critical thinker in white house.

Here’s one for Tom Brown: There was once an old man named Trump/Who did very well on the stump/But draining the swamp, though hailed with pomp, was soon left abandoned in junk Tom Lopez/Longmont.

Degrade North Korea

President Trump has pointed out the strong linkage between China and North Korea, and he correctly assumes China can influence North Korea’s weapons development program. We must work with China on resolving this situation, and also on the Chinese encroachment in the South China Sea and the trade deficit imbalance.

At this juncture, the North Korean nuclear missile program is of primary concern. China can bring pressure on North Korea to stop its development of these weapons systems by reducing its trade with North Korea.

One area of trade that comes to mind is the large quantity of coal China imports from North Korea. It is estimated this amounts to 22 million tons per year, which is 40 percent of North Korea’s coal exports. A reduction in the importation of North Korean coal would significantly impact the North Korean economy, and could force it to change its position on arms development.

The U.S. has large quantities of coal available for mining which could be sold to China, if cost effective, to fill its coal importation needs. This would help our trade imbalance with China, boost our coal mining industry, and put our coal miners back to work.

letters Trumps tax returns can be examined

According to George K. Yin, a professor of Law and Taxation at the University of Virginia School of Law and Taxation in Charlottesville, a 1924 law, the result of conflict of interest concerns about the Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon and executive-branch officials involved in the Teapot Dome scandal, gives Congress the authority to examine Trump’s returns and reveal them to the public without the president’s consent.

Governing America is not a job for simpletons. We are a large, diverse nation and issues of the economy, of foreign relations and of global climate change are complex and many-faceted and cannot be met by magical thinking.

Nor is it a job for absolutists. One size simply does not fit all.

Donald Trump has an avid and vocal fan base but his overall favorability rating is low (and will never match that of Barack Hussein Obama) and that of Congress ranks as abysmal, yet both he and the Republican leadership continue to present themselves and their narrow ideas as though they were exceptional and “know more than anybody.” Unfortunately, in the immortal words of Gertrude Stein, “there is no there there.”

Two socially tone-deaf GOP actions

The current administration’s attempts to improve business economics through relieving operating costs need to be challenged. Specifically, attempts to buzz-cut EPA regulations threaten our health and relaxing medical insurance pre-existing condition coverage is counterproductive.

With the EPA, there are certainly unnecessary regulations. However, asking industry to prioritize regulations to be removed will result in the most socially protective ones being eliminated. We who grew up before businesses were required to be environmentally conscious know this — business untethered will pollute the air we breathe, the water we drink and the ground we farm, all in the name of increased profit. EPA involvement is essential to preventing sewage and fertilizer runoff polluted rivers, black lung-like respiratory diseases, brown cloud and acid Boulder Weekly

smog air pollution, leeched mining waste, and metal poisoning. Gutting the EPA’s ability to regulate and oversee will set our society back 50 years.

With health insurance, having an age-based premium increase is understandable, but eliminating the requirement that insurers provide regular coverage for people with pre-existing conditions will eventually have a large unanticipated impact. GOP proposals allow insurers to relegate people with

pre-existing conditions into costly high risk pools, much as accident-prone drivers pay more for auto insurance.

With genomic research increasingly identifying genetic predispositions (e.g., BRCA1/BRCA2 variants associated with specific forms of cancer), a large population will be identified as predisposed to one or more medical conditions. Insurers will likely declare predisposition to be a pre-existing condition, resulting in a significant subset of

healthy people forced to choose between higher costs or opting out.

Since one of the societal benefits of having general medical coverage is a healthier, more productive society, this is counterproductive.

This is becoming a broken record, but we need to call upon our elected officials to prevent this type of regressive government oversight from becoming reality.

It

seemed like an ordinary morning.

Ana was sitting in the passenger seat typing her final paper while her husband Victor drove her to school. All of a sudden, their bodies lurched forward and back; they had just been rear-ended. However, the panic that ensued wasn’t from the accident but from the encounter Victor, an undocumented immigrant, had with the police who came to investigate.

“Am I about to see my husband get taken away from me?” Ana thought. “Why is it that my husband is now getting the heat from the police when it should be the reckless driver that almost cost us our lives? Why? Why?

Why?” Ana Christina Temu’s story is one of the five original monologues from Do You Know Who I Am?, a 2013 award-winning play directed and scripted by Motus Theater Director Kirsten Wilson voicing the personal narratives of undocumented immigrants. Now, law enforcement leaders of Boulder County have been invited to join the conversation by reading the monologues in the upcoming performance titled Law Enforcement Leaders Read Do You Know Who I Am? The one-time performance will take place on Sunday, April 30 at The Dairy Arts Center and is meant to build more trust between law enforcement and the community, primarily Boulder Weekly

those who are not legally authorized to be in the U.S. “I think we’re taking a huge leap of faith and we’re really trusting that law enforcement will understand and will get what people are going through,” Temu says. “We’re hoping that it will pass on to how they enforce and serve our community.”

Since its premiere, more than 4,500 people have seen the original show, allowing those who may be unfamiliar with the struggles of undocumented immigrants to witness the daily fears that haunt them. The updated performance will also bring in Ana Casas’s monologue, which was originally scripted and co-produced with Motus Theater by Programa Compañeras of El Centro de Amistad for the performance Salsa Lotéria.

Wilson strategically paired up each monologue based on the context of the story and the position of the law enforcement reader. For instance, Boulder District Attorney Stan Garnett will read Casas’s monologue about her younger brother’s painful deportation.

The story of Casas’s brother, Luis Alberto, sheds light on the inhumane treatment people receive during the process of deportation. As an 18-yearold young man, Luis Alberto spent six months in jail and was then thrown into one of the most dangerous cities in Mexico.

“For a district attorney to talk about the injustice of deportation is a very powerful thing,” Wilson says. “To get up there, speaking Ana Casas’s story and asking, ‘Is this justice?’”

Following the performance, law enforcement officers will address a range of topics, including how to enforce local laws without involving federal immigration regulations.

Chief Greg Testa, Lafayette Police Chief Rick Bashor, Louisville Police Chief David Heyes and Vice Chancellor of Safety — and former CU Police Chief — Melissa Zak, will join Garnett on stage.

“We lead by example,” Chief Bashor, who will read Hugo Juarez’s monologue, says. “What we say is what we mean and that dialogue just needs to continue on so that people can ask questions, get to know us and we can get to know them.”

In hopes of reaching law enforcement leaders in communities outside of Boulder County, KGNU radio will broadcast the performance live and then once again on May 4.

“Communicating and building trust with the immigrant community has always been a top priority in mind, particularly since the election,” Garnett says. “The performance seemed like a fairly creative way to continue to carry the message we’ve been carrying, which is that state law enforcement in our community has no responsibility for immigration issues and we’re interested in protecting everyone.”

While the City of Boulder recently Michael Ensminger claimed the official title of a “sanctuary city,” there is still much confusion about what law enforcement can or cannot do.

Sanctuary cities cannot stop Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from making arrests but they are safe zones wherein local law enforcement is not required to enforce federal immigration law.

Many of the law enforcement leaders in the performance already work directly with members of the undocumented community to educate about how they separate local law enforcement practice from federal immigration law. Reports show that many undocumented immigrants, out of fear of deportation, keep their children from school and often avoid doctor visits Ana Casas in Salsa Lotéria. or refuse to call the police when in danger.

Because of this, a partnership between law enforcement leaders and undocumented people becomes crucial in creating a community based on honesty and safety.

Performers and brothers Oscar, Juan and Hugo Juarez recognize Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle’s efforts to build a foundation of trust between the sheriff ’s association and the undocumented community. To them, Pelle’s partnership with the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition (CIRC) demonstrates his commitment to honoring local policies and prioritizing safety.

“I can talk all day but it’s my actions that matter,” Pelle says.

He is scheduled to read Juan Juarez’s monologue about the various barriers the young man faced pursuing his dream of attending college.

“It’s an honor to read his story,” Pelle says. “He has told me his story before, so when I saw the monologue it was familiar to me, and I’m happy to recite it on his behalf.”

Hugo, Juan and Oscar Juarez’s narratives talk about their experience growing up undocumented in Arizona with a deep-seated mistrust of law enforcement officers, especially as anti-immigration legislation passed, such as the infamous “Show me your papers” law, among others.

Such laws influenced the Juarez family to move to Colorado, only to find that there were similar immigration policies here, too. (Although the 2006 law requiring local law officials to report anyone suspected of being undocumented to ICE was repealed in 2013.)

Rather than continue running from policies that increase the risk of deportation, the Juarez brothers got involved with CIRC and Northern Colorado Dreamers United (NCDU) to fight for the rights of undocumented immigrants and create a platform for their stories to be told, including Do You Know Who I Am? “We’re just planting the seed so that it grows out of the performance for people to take action,” Oscar Juarez says. “We could make a federal impact as [long] as we continue doing this work on a broader level.”

All three brothers are now recipients of the federal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and attend Metropolitan State University.

valid drivers license and to be shielded from deportation.

But the uncertainty of the program under the Trump administration is causing anxiety for both the Juarez brothers and the entire community.

While concerns over losing these rights are vast, the primary fear is what the federal government will do with the information of DACA recipients if the program is revoked.

“If immigration were to come pick me up, not only would they take me, they would also take my parents,” Oscar Juarez says. “It’s millions of peoples’ lives that are at stake and it’s frightening... What happens in D.C., that’s a whole different world, but we want to make the local fight, we want to make sure that all of our local and elected officials put [forward] the example for everybody. To make sure that we continue to build trust and that they hold their word for what they tell the community.”

Rather than overwhelming audiences with statistics and laws, these performances, both in their original form and read by law enforcement, highlight the obstacles undocumented youth have to overcome to pursue their dreams of going to college and supporting their families.

“Our team has worked so hard at getting to the heart of what it is to be not just undocumented but human,” performer Victor Galvan says. “Talking about our hopes and dreams, talking about our challenges and moving forward... If people can connect on that level I think the conversation is already on a better foot.”

Galvan tells his story of growing up undocumented in Denver and having to get up at 3 a.m. to help his mom sell burritos. His determination to go to college was greater than the barriers preventing him from doing so. He knew his involvement with the community mattered, so he partnered up with Padres y Jovénes Unidos — an organization working for racial justice, educational equity and immigrant rights.

Galvan’s efforts were recognized when he won the Mayor and Commissioner Youth Award for Overcoming Adversity, which granted him one free year at the Community College of Denver.

Narratives reflecting the experiences of youth like Galvan, Temu, Casas and the Juarez brothers are meant to defy the notion that undocumented immigrants are “criminals.” When law enforcement leaders begin to understand the undocumented community as individuals with hopes and dreams, a foundation of trust is built.

“Folks who are living in fear based merely on their existence need all of the voices they can muster to stand up Boulder Weekly

for them and say, ‘You belong to us and you’re part of us,’” Butler says. “We want them to feel like this place is safe for their voice to be heard, for their thoughts to matter and most importantly for their humanness to be valued.”

olorado experienced 509 oil-and-gasrelated spills in 2016, and experts expect more spills this year as production and drilling activity around the state increase.

These findings are part of a recent report from the Center for Western Priorities (CWP), a Denver-based public lands and energy watchdog group.

The report breaks down 2016 spill data provided by the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC) in terms of spill contents, location and impact.

The projected production increase follows the 20152016 lull in Colorado’s oil and gas production after prices collapsed in 2014. According to CWP, spills decreased proportionally to the slowing of oil and gas production, which indicates a direct correlation between production levels and spills.

“There are some indications that permits for drilling have gone up significantly in the last couple of months,” says Aaron Weiss, media director at CWP. “If prices go up slightly then there may be sites in Colorado where it becomes profitable to drill where it wasn’t before.”

The report indicates that Colorado’s top five oil and gas producers accounted for roughly 50 percent of spills in the state. The top two producers, Noble

Energy and Anadarko Petroleum, were responsible for nearly a third of all spills.

Only 115 reported spills contained oil, while half were comprised of produced water, a toxic by-product of the fracking process.

“That term, ‘produced water,’ doesn’t really give you a sense of how toxic this stuff can be. It isn’t something you want going into a stream or into your well,” Weiss says. “This is toxic stuff.”

Proximity to occupied buildings has also been a contentious issue, when it comes to oil and gas development.

water, with 89 spills (17.5 percent) taking place within 500 feet of water sources. While only four spills were found to have impacted surface water, the spills’ distance from water went unreported in 44 percent of cases, making the full implications of these spills unknown.

Fifty-eight spills reportedly affected groundwater.

In a 2015 study published in Environmental Science and Technology, researchers measured water contaminated by produced water. Researchers found levels of ammonium 50 times higher than maximum safe levels as

wells nearby. And this month, a Colorado bill attempting to require a 1,000-foot setback from school property lines was blocked in the state senate.

According to the CWP report, 10 percent of spills occurred within 500 feet of an occupied building. It adds that for 52 percent of spills, no distance was reported at all.

The report notes that 246 of Colorado’s 509 spills took place in Weld County, despite it comprising less than 4 percent of Colorado’s total area.

While the prevalence of spills is not surprising given the extent of Weld’s

oil production, some residents are concerned with the repeated spilling in the relatively small area.

“It’s horrendous, the amount of wells that we have,” says Carl Erickson, chair of Weld Air and Water. “The spill situation in Weld County is so bad that we have [a spill report,] a permanent Monday fixture in the Greeley Tribune. ... There are usually at least six spills that have happened in the previous week — sometimes it goes up as high as 15.”

Despite the detailed information the report provides, the data — which comes from the oil and gas companies themselves — leaves many questions unanswered. We know how many spills occur, but without information about volume we have no way of knowing how much spilling is going on. And because reporting requirements differ from state to state, it’s hard to say how Colorado’s spills compare to other states.

Erickson and Weiss agree that more stringent reporting requirements are essential to understanding oil and gas production in our state. But there’s one thing that the available data tells Weiss loud and clear.

“You do see spills going up and down as production rises and falls,” he says. “If we are entering a period where production is ramping back up, then we will likely see spills start increasing again this year.”

Chef Ann continues to redefine what a school lunch should be

esticides, trans fats, high fructose syrup: Our modern lives are surrounded by ingredients that many argue are undermining our health slowly but surely. While there is a growing number of clean-eating options at restaurants and grocery stores, school food is often an afterthought. Even if parents are careful about their children’s diets, they usually have no control over what their kids are eating at school: oily chicken nuggets, pizza, mac and cheese.

It’s a reality Chef Ann Cooper, director of food services at Boulder Valley School District (BVSD), has been trying to change for more than a decade.

Most recently she’s started eliminating seven potentially harmful ingredients from the school lunch program across the district with the help of a grant from Life Time Foundation.

“Corporate agriculture uses 1.2 billion pounds of pesticides each year,” she told a TEDx Manhattan audience in 2013. “That’s a 5-pound bag for every man, woman and child in our country.”

Here in Boulder County, Chef Ann has implemented a number of changes to ensure kids at BVSD have access to healthy food over the past nine years.

For example, the cafeterias at BVSD now cook school lunches from scratch, using organic and local ingredients. Even so, she still saw one aspect she wanted to change: the use of certain processed foods.

According to the Life Time Foundation, trans fats and hydrogenated oils increase the risk of heart disease, and high fructose corn syrup can lead to an increased risk of diabetes. Consuming hormones and antibiotics through food may result in antibiotic resistance. Processed and artificial sweeteners can contribute to childhood obesity; artificial colors and flavors are known to increase hyperactivity; artificial

She’s concerned artificial ingredients may tire children and hinder them from concentrating at school. “With proper nutrition, I think children are better equipped to learn,” she says.

When her son first asked if he could eat in the school cafeteria instead of packing his own lunch every day, Stilson hesitated. “I was skeptical,” she says. However, she eventually agreed after seeing Chef Ann’s efforts to make the food at BVSD greener. “If you leave a veggie tray on the kitchen counter, they’ll eat it, simply because it’s there and they want something easy when they’re hungry,” Stilson says. It must be true because students seem to love Chef Ann’s offerings.

In addition to lunches made from scratch, Chef Ann also introduced salad bars at many of the schools and offers food education events to help kids understand the nutritional effects of the different foods being offered.

Her programs reached 400,00 children in 2016, and this year, the Chef Ann Foundation is aiming to reach even more. “I think we are helping school districts change their food across the country,” she says.

In recognition of Chef Ann’s tireless effort to improve the health of children, both at BVSD and around the country, she was named a “Top 50 food activists” by the Academy of Culinary Nutrition in 2016.

“We want our children to be as healthy as possible, and it’s very important that we don’t feed them chemicals and preservatives,” she says. “They have smaller bodies, so the same amount has a larger effect.”

The so-called “Renegade Lunch Lady,” Chef Ann also promotes parent advocacy through her Chef Ann Foundation, getting BVSD parents involved in what their children are eating for lunch.

Pyjas uses a wheelchair during her day-to-day life, but that’s not an obstacle to riding. When she first started at CTRC, Pyjas used a custom saddle — what barn manager Lindsey Moloznik calls adaptive tack, with a t-bar support where the horn of a Western saddle would be — to help her balance and stay on the horse. She also started by using reins with handles to aid her grip. This year, Pyjas won the Adult Rider of the Year Award at CTRC and can trot across the ring holding onto standard reins, supported by her volunteer team that includes a leader and her cousin as one of her two side walkers.

Since 1980, CTRC has offered a therapeutic riding program for adults and children with a range of disabilities, including Multiple Sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, stroke, developmental delays, autism and visual impairment. In 1982, CTRC received accreditation from the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH) International; each CTRC instructor goes through PATH training for a certificate.

The program rotates throughout the year with four sessions varying in length, between six and 13 weeks. Therapeutic riding is taught in groups of two to four, while hippotherapy, which is similar to therapeutic riding, is taught one-on-one with a rider and a certified therapist.

Program director Heather McLaughlin explains that the benefits of therapeutic riding go beyond building physical strength and balance. According to McLaughlin, everyone is a rider first, “participating in an equestrian sport as an equestrian, pursuing equestrian goals. It’s just that they’re meeting all these physical goals in this case as well.”

“The physical strength and endurance and confidence to get up in a two-point position, and the balance, the bilateral coordination that that takes, is incredible,” she explains. “The rider often has no idea that they’re bringing all of those facets to the move, but a physical therapist knows it.”

CTRC has 25-plus horses, all of which can meet different needs for different riders.

Head instructor Michelle Bruhn says that from the minute a rider walks in the door, she is thinking about what kind of horse and saddle might be best for them.

According to Moloznik and Bruhn, there are a number of variables to factor in when choosing the right horse for a rider, including horse size and shape, their gait, as well as the rider’s diagnosis, size, ability and what they will benefit most from in a horse. For instance, a child with attention deficit disorder may benefit most from a horse with high motion.

The tack — or saddle and reins — is also a consideration. Adaptive tack is created for riders who have different limitations, such as Pyjas’ t-bar saddle or reins adapted to work with someone who might only have the use of one side of their body.

Students at CTRC get more than just therapy while they’re in the ring.

Family-like relationships form between riders, volunteers and staff members, such as the bond between the four female riders of the Happy Bottoms Riding Club.

One of these women, Pat Hatfield, who has a neurodegenerative disease called ALS, has been at CTRC for around five years after a member of her support group turned her on to the idea. She’s enjoyed riding so much that when the first horse she rode, Corky, was retired, she pitched in with a few volunteers to pay for his adoption fee.

Hatfield says her favorite thing is, “the family of CTRC, the community of the staff and the volunteers, the instructors, the horses. They make everything so safe and they challenge you without putting you at any risk.”

Annette Gruba has been working with CTRC as one of the therapeutic riding instructors for 11 years, and has been working with therapeutic riding for 17 years.

Gruba works with Pyjas, Hatfield and the rest of the riders in the Happy Bottoms Riding Club.

For Gruba, lesson planning is key to ensuring that riders can be successful. In certain cases, riders may not be able to hold things in both hands, or use their legs to cue the horse.

“The volunteers are a great resource for us,” Gruba says. “They help in the adaptive sense as much as the equipment does a lot of times.”

Cognitive ability is something Gruba takes heavily into consideration while planning lessons. For some groups, walking along CTRC’s sensory trail while being quizzed on the names of shapes and colors may be the perfect lesson plan.

For other groups, that kind of lesson wouldn’t fit.

“The physical ability, frankly, I take into consideration less, because if they can sit up on a horse, if they can hold themselves up basically, we can work on all kinds of skills,” Gruba says.

For Pyjas, what she says she likes the most about CTRC is “the independence of it” and she says that despite the nerves that may come along with riding, she is sure that if she were to fall, her volunteers would be there to catch her.

Actor/musician Kiefer Sutherland talks music and television

WHEN ACTOR KIEFER SUTHERLAND first thought of demoing songs he had

written, he wasn’t planning to be the person releasing them.

“I had written them awhile back, but I had 15 or 20 songs that I wanted to kind of do demos of and maybe send them off to BMI or maybe Sony Music and see if one of their artists would ever like to record them,” Sutherland explains in a recent phone interview.

Instead, he recorded a couple of the songs with good friend Jude Cole, who had other ideas once he heard Sutherland sing them.

“Jude said, ‘I don’t think you should give these away so fast. I really like them and they’re really personal to you. I can tell that. Maybe we could do a couple more and maybe you’d like to make an album,’” Sutherland recalls. “And I remember laughing at him: ‘That’s ridiculous.

That will never happen because I’m clearly aware that actors doing music has never been received very well,’ and I didn’t want to put myself in that position.”

Now Sutherland is on his second U.S. tour supporting the album Cold suggested they make, Down in the Hole.

It turns out, Cole and Sutherland decided over a couple of drinks to record a couple more of the songs, and Sutherland started to like the way the songs were sounding. Soon Cole was producing and bringing his songwriting input to the 11 songs that make up the album.

“He (Cole) basically took the songs and arranged them, like a producer would,” Sutherland says. “But where he was so amazingly helpful is he would actually — and he’s such a beautiful writer — he would restructure a chord progression that would allow you to do a really nice, simple bridge here. So he really gave the songs structure.”

Sutherland describes the sound of Down in the Hole as “Americana with a country twist.” “Not Enough Whiskey” and “Shirley Jean” are spare, largely acoustic ballads in the traditional country vein. Sutherland’s weathered baritone voice nicely fits the tone of the songs. “[The title song] ‘Down in the Hole’ is... it’s a rock track to me, or a country-rock track to me,” Sutherland says. “‘Can’t Stay Away,’ I would say the same thing. A couple of love songs are much more Jackson Browne sounding than they are traditional [country] — and I’m certainly not comparing myself to Jackson Browne — but just that tone, almost like the California rock sound as opposed to straight-up country.”

But he’s had a long-running interest and involvement in music, first writing songs while in a band as a teenager.

“I can still remember the first song I ever wrote,” he says. “I play it every once in awhile to make my friends laugh. I think it was called ‘Mother, Won’t You Leave Me Alone.’”

After becoming friends with Cole — an accomplished songwriter and singer who released five solo albums between 1987 and 2000 and has gone on to enjoy a productive career as a songwriter and producer — the pair founded a small record label, Ironworks, in 2002.

By that time, though, acting had already taken a leading role in Sutherland’s pursuits. With a resume that included roles in such high-profile films as Stand by Me, The Lost Boys, Young Guns I and II and A Few Good Men, he was cast to portray Jack Bauer in a Fox television series set to debut in 2001 called 24.

The series became an instant hit with Sutherland playing a counter terrorist unit agent. Each of the first eight seasons featured 24 episodes, each representing an hour in a single day of Bauer’s life as he raced against the clock to stop whatever crisis loomed — presidential assassination attempts, bombings, corruption, etc.

Although 24 came to an end after a 12-episode ninth season, Sutherland is now one of a number of producers of a spin-off series, 24: Legacy, which is now airing on the Fox network.

He says 24 and the Jack Bauer role was the “gift of a lifetime,” and he sensed early on that it might be big for his future.

“You have to understand that for maybe seven years prior to 24, my career was not going very well as an actor,” Sutherland says. “In fact, I had to stop for awhile because if I had made a couple more not-great films, or bad films, it would be over.

“So when 24 took off, I hadn’t experienced that [sort of acclaim] since maybe A Few Good Men or Flatliners. That’s quite a ways back,” he says. “I think when I was younger, I would take the successes of certain films for granted because it just always seemed to happen. Having gone 10 years where it wasn’t happening and to have it happen again ... I remember my first reaction was don’t mess this up because it’s a real opportunity. So I guess on some level I felt it had the potential.”

When 24 completed its run in 2014, it gave Sutherland an opening for other activities, including making Down in a Hole. Since then, he’s returned to television with his new ABC series, Designated Survivor, which debuted last fall.

“Every time there’s a State of the Union, it’s actually written in the Constitution, each party has to pick a cabinet member that is sequestered and protected by the FBI in case of a disaster,” Sutherland says, explaining the premise of the show. “I think they were thinking of [the danger of ] fire back when the Capitol building was mainly [built of ] wood. And so that there would be somebody left in the line of succession to the presidency. ...

“So [my character] and his wife spend it watching in a board room somewhere, and a terrorist attack happens and the Capitol building is destroyed and he becomes president overnight,” he says. “And the show is really an examination of what that does to his family. That is one aspect of the show. The other aspect is the incredible, the reaching back for power from other people within the government and the military, and then the investigation into who did this and what is ultimately going to be the appropriate response. It is written very well.”

In between episodes of the show, singer/guitarist Sutherland schedules tour stops, like his visit to the Fox Theatre on May 10. Along with his four-piece band, he says he plans to play the entire Down in a Hole album, plus a couple of songs planned for a second album and possibly a third tune that was left off of the debut album.

Sutherland has found playing live to be one of the most fun and rewarding parts of venturing into music.

“To be able to go and play my own songs and be able to explain where I was at when I wrote this song, and maybe there’s a connection somewhere between me and you, [is special],” he says. “You realize that my life, as lucky as I’ve been, the human aspect of my life really is not that much different than yours. We all go through the same things. The same things hurt us and the same things make us happy. So I really liked playing my songs in that context. ... That’s really been the thing I’ve been most excited about doing.”

overtones From Trane to Allan to Abasi

When isn’t a straight line straight?

nterviewed in 2014 by premierguitar.com, one of the preeminent guitar enthusiast websites, Animals as Leaders guitarist Tosin Abasi talked about “Ka$cade,” one of the cuts from the band’s then-new long player The Joy of Motion, referencing Allan Holdsworth, one his prime fretboard influences.

“He’s an example of someone who has such a distinct voice that you can’t come anywhere close to what he’s doing without being really obvious about who you’re taking it from.”

Leaders guitarist The fact is that Tosin Abasi Holdsworth, who passed from this mortal coil unexpectedly in midApril at age 70, would probably not have summoned a guitar influence as clearly as Abasi could. Holdsworth said in many interviews that, as a young teen in his native Bradford, England, that he really didn’t want to be a guitar player. His exposure to jazz music, which came via his jazz-loving pianist dad, ignited a musical inspiration around the reed players, notably Coltrane.

Anyone who listens to Holdsworth’s playing and knows anything about what Coltrane was doing would find this unsurprising — Coltrane’s furious modal inventions, his innate ability to deconstruct and re-assemble melodic statements, his use of overtones — are deeply ingrained in Holdsworth’s interval-stretching soloing, his interval-jumping gallops and tortured scalar wanderlust.

In a simpler context, Holdsworth was a guitarist’s guitarist, dropping jaws the likes of Steve Morse, Eddie Van Halen (who some have speculated lifted Holdsworth’s fretboard tapping technique) and others. In this world, though, you can’t eat accolades.

In the wake of his unexpected death, a GoFundMe account was set up by a close family friend to cover his funeral expenses, as Holdsworth was essentially broke at the time of his death, trying to finish up two solo albums that, truth be told, would likely not have improved his financial Boulder Weekly

situation much. Electric fusion guitar records don’t make anyone rich. They would probably have been magnificent, and some of that music may still come to light — the GoFundMe (now closed) aimed to raise $20,000 — it topped more than $114,000 when Holdsworth’s family requested that it be closed. Some of that may help finish up Holdsworth’s works in progress.

The bizarre and slightly heartbreaking online spectacle of hundreds of guitar players and fusion enthusiasts donating a Hamilton or two to cover funeral expenses for “the greatest guitar player of all time,” as more than a few commented, seemed to make his passing all the more bitter. Seventy years on the planet doesn’t seem enough for genius.

(Coltrane, of course, only got 40.)

That Holdsworth was associated with fusion jazz, that oft-maligned marriage of rock dynamics and amplification with the improvisational loft of jazz, was both his blessing and his curse. Associated as he was with the likes of Tony Williams, Jean-Luc Ponty, Gong, Pierre Moerlen and progger-turned-fusioneer Bill Bruford in the late ’70s, his appearance on a bigger star’s record lent an aura of sophistication and harmonic maturity to what could have otherwise been another sterile solo-fest. But like many other instrumentalists of that era, his subsequent solo records were relatively modestly received.

(Although Metal Fatigue is considered an essential component of the fusion guitar canon.) A few illadvised record deals, a diminishing audience and the fickle fortune of industry dollarchasing relegated Holdsworth to the status of an enthusiast’s icon. Eddie and Eric and their like went on to play stadiums — Holdsworth to play clubs.

But as Animals as Leaders comes to town, fronted by arguably the most inventive and technically superhuman guitarist kicking dust in Tosin Abasi, the strains of Holdsworth’s otherworldly harmonic voice and his blistering technique will ring clearly for those ready to hear it.

Abasi, of course, should be taken on his own terms, and some of his own musical constructions, fleeting and sometimes buried by the intensity of AaL’s pitiless attack, extend well beyond what Holdsworth was doing 40 years ago. But the DNA is unmistakable.

And for all the dismissive obituaries written about the great fusion movement of the ’70s, much of which dissolved into various forms of lite jazz, straight-ahead trios and world music in subsequent years, the spirit and combustion of Holdsworth and his peers (if you concede he had any, and plenty of guitarists insist he didn’t) continues in the progmetal scene. There isn’t a top-caliber guitarist alive today who doesn’t know Holdsworth’s name.

Ganguly, a Boulder resident, has specialized in learning and performing Tagore’s songs.

Esmail’s “Jhula Jhula” is the opposite of what Tagore did by placing Western melody in an Indian milieu. Here, the composer has taken music that has been passed down through many generations of her Indian family and written them into a piece for clarinet and piano. “This is an example of how Indian themes combine with Western harmonies and Western instruments,” Bailey says.

Another approach to the Indian-Western crossover is represented by JAMkey JAM. The group was started by two Nepalese musicians, Bijay Shrestha playing sitar and Nabin Shrestha playing tabla. Both grew up with traditional Indian music, which they have studied since childhood.

With a motto of “traditional music goes contemporary,” JAMkey JAM bases performances on traditional Indian ragas (a pattern of musical notes that is used as the basis for improvisation).

Bailey says for the Dairy program, “they will be playing a classical Indian piece that will morph into a Western-Indian fusion.”

Esmail hopes that the Shastra organization and the Boulder concert will get more people interested in all the ingredients of their East-meets-West product. “Hopefully what will happen is that people who attend will get a sense of what the Indian-Western crossover community looks like,” she says.

“Maybe some people who only know Indian music will attend and hear something that appeals to them, and the people who know only Western music will attend and hear something that appeals to them. We hope to provide both of those experiences.

“People can come in and get their feet wet. Maybe one artist will really speak to them, and then they know someone new.”

‘Colossal’ makes abuse a monster-sized issue

I

bet the person in charge of marketing Colossal named the ulcer they developed “Nacho.” Writer/director Nacho Vigalondo’s latest is nigh-impossible to categorize and misleading to summarize. It is an aggressively original film that tackles a maddeningly overlooked subject using a giant monster, a towering robot and the oddly divisive presence of Anne Hathaway. What Colossal gets modestly wrong in terms of mildly mixed messaging and on-the-nose metaphor is easily forgiven when considering how unapologetic it is about the importance of its monstrous actual subject.

That subject is abuse.

Colossal uses the medium of science-fiction in its best, most meaningful way: as a figurative social magnifying glass. The film makes literal the symbolic magnitude of the epidemic involving the modern aggro-masculine torture of women.

Hathaway plays Gloria, a woman whose douchebag boyfriend, Tim (Dan Stevens), keeps her around so he can feel superior. He deplorably disguises his demeaning mistreatment, masking his abuse as concern.

When he kicks her out, she returns to her hometown and reunites with her grade-school friend, Oscar ( Jason Sudeikis). Shortly thereafter, a giant monster appears out of nowhere and demolishes Seoul, South Korea.

These events are connected because Gloria is the monster. At least, when she walks through a specific playground at a specific time, a bug-lookin’ kaiju shows up on the other side of the world and replicates her every action. Hatha-haters in the audience will no doubt finally feel smugly justified. The Hathaway-lien soon has company, a development that is technically a spoiler. But you know what? Screw it. Colossal is less about plot-based contrivances and more demonstrates a desire to engage in or, in the case of head-insand ignoramuses, start a massively important dialogue. So let’s do that.

Oscar discovers he too can control a creature by going in the playground. It’s a giant robot he uses to recklessly slaughter innocents, a macrocosmic expansion of the mental and physical abuse he begins imparting on Gloria. Oscar’s metamorphosis from “aw shucks” nice guy to physically violent total dickbag makes him one of the more significant movie supervillains in modern memory. Vigalondo’s grounding of this abuse fable within a quasi-superhero flick, the most dominant genre of our current era, is purposeful. Gloria’s arc mimics the classic comic book origin story, with her transcending from downtrodden and hurt to triumphantly empowered.

Tired of the message falling on deaf ears, Colossal speaks its vital truth in the pop culture language of the times, daring audiences to miss the point.

They can’t, which is one of the film’s problems. It’s stultifyingly obvious in its narrative analog. Forgoing cleverness for brutal, in-your-face moralizing is understandable if a bit structurally underwhelming. The other major problem is Gloria’s inconsistent depiction. Hathaway isn’t to blame, as she gives a largely controlled, rich performance. Vigalondo’s writing of her actions are muddled in the beginning and conflicting at times near the end. Considering how crude the rest of the metaphor is, having “shades of gray” only in the victim of domestic violence seems a bit off. But it’s hard to be too angry at Colossal, considering how much better things could be if important issues found their way to the cultural spotlight in this fashion more often.

The line that separates the two will become fuzzy and after enough time, a glance across the table might as well be a glance into the mirror.

That is the governing principle behind the friendship between famed postImpressionist painter Paul Cézanne (Guillaume Gallienne) and novelist, journalist and playwright Émile Zola (Guillaume Canet) in writer/director Danièle Thompson’s latest film, Cézanne et moi.

Covering the years from 1852 to the early 1900s, the film traces Cézanne and Zola’s friendship from young men testing the boundaries of the world to the love/hate relationship that would play out for the rest of their lives. Though, to be fair, any relationship that lasts longer than a decade tends to become a love/hate relationship.

As a boy in Aix-enProvence, Cézanne grew up wealthy; Zola grew up poor.

Both left for Paris to change the course of history and while Cézanne was repeatedly rejected, Zola found fame and wealth.

Though Cézanne never lost his wealth, he grew reclusive and bitter. As one well-to-do character describes, “He lives his life in a dump for one minute of applause.”

Zola, now a member of the The real-life friendship of painter Paul Cézanne and writer Émile Zola proved bourgeois that he so despised as that any relationship that lasts longer than a child, also bitters. Not out of a decade tends to become a love/hate relationship. rejection but out of acceptance.

Zola has bills and status to maintain, both of which disgust Cézanne. They disgust Zola as well, but you can’t let them see you bleed.

For those unfamiliar with Cézanne and Zola, Cézanne et moi offers little in the form of historical context to help explain why Cézanne was rejected and why Zola was accepted. For those with an introductory knowledge of the subjects and the time period, Cézanne et moi is an interesting study of how artists play off and blatantly steal from each other. In Hollywood there is a phrase: “It’s not ‘show friends’ it’s ‘show business.’” Who knows what idiomatic equivalent was used during the Bella Époque but whatever it was, it fit Cézanne and Zola.

Though the push-pull of Cézanne and Zola’s relationship provides plenty of conflicts, too much of the movie’s tension lies just under the surface unable to burst out onto the screen. The movie is quite stunning to look at — several of Thompson and cinematographer Jean-Marie Dreujou’s compositions are so beautiful, so lush, they look like a Cézanne come to life. But they’re not enough. Even the most beautiful paintings must have a sturdy wall to be hung on. Cézanne et moi lacks that wall.

hen I was a kid, my parents used to bundle me up in the back of my mom’s old Pontiac Grand Am at some un-Godly hour of the morning and drive down to Savannah, Georgia, for vacation. It’s not exactly Disney World, but then again, I’m not exactly a Mousketeer.

Savannah just fit my mood; nestled against a river, cloaked in the gauzy sage of Spanish moss, the city could conjure up a storm as dark and tempestuous as you like, then vanquish it just as fast.

The cobblestone of River Street is where I developed a love of seafood. After a day of kite-flying and beach-combing on Tybee Island, we’d head back inland 15 miles and visit one of Savannah’s beloved raw bars or fish houses. Then it was shrimp cocktail, sweet tea and, my favorite, oysters. I always felt so content in those moments with my family; just a little sunburned from a day at the beach, my mom and dad relaxed, fresh seafood reviving us before a show at the theater.

Maybe it’s why I’ve always really loved oysters.

I managed to tap into some of that nostalgia during a recent trip to Wild Standard. Wild Standard is the brainchild of Chef Bradford Heap of SALT and Colterra. Like its sister restaurants, Wild Standard adheres to the same principle: Food is best when it’s seasonal, sustainable and

dining room that can seat perhaps 20, with cushioned bench seating mixed in with pillowbacked wrought iron chairs. Hidden from the world — protected even — it felt a bit like eating below deck.

On this particular evening, Wild Standard was serving four types of oysters (the Goosepoint, a Washington state-harvested mollusk, was 86 for the night). There is the Royal Miyagi, a small oyster with a slightly flutOyster types: Royal Miyagi, ed white and purple shell Kumamoto, Damariscotta from the Sunshine Coast and Chunu of British Columbia. ots of Colorado food companies call their products “local,” but it may really mean “regional.” Many restaurants detail the local source of their ingredients and the word is plastered all over signs in the produce departments of Boulder’s 17-plus grocery stores. But does local include all of Colorado?

It was 1977 when Steve Demos started making bean curd by hand using an iron cauldron in a tiny Boulder kitchen and started selling it to health food stores. Last year, Demos told Colorado Public Radio: “At the time, when the shop was making tofu, it would be fresh every morning. And there was a health food store down the street in Boulder called Down to Earth. Trudy Stewart and her child would load up in the little red wagon and take maybe 50-100 blocks of tofu three to four blocks down the road.”

Pie Crust

3/4 cup shortening 2 cups flour 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1 teaspoon salt 1 egg yolk 1/4 cup cold milk 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

In a medium bowl, cut shortening into flour, sugar and salt until the mix looks like cornmeal or small peas. In

another bowl, slightly beat egg yolk and combine with milk and lemon juice.

Add to flour mixture and mix by hand until it forms ball. Roll on well-floured pastry cloth with well-floured rolling pin.

With roughly 300 days of sunON TAP: Echo shine a year, Coloradans have plenty of Brewing Co. 600 Briggs St., Erie, opportunities to soak up the sun hiking on 720-361-2332, the trail, biking on the path and, my personechobrewing.com. al favorite, drinking on the patio. And with more than 200 breweries operating in the Centennial state, there are plenty of patios to explore.

That’s why I recently headed over to the Echo Brewing Co. in Erie; I heard they had a pretty fantastic patio to lounge on. I also heard they had beer, which is maybe why I went in the first place.

Echo Brewing began in the nearby town of Frederick in 2012 when the Richards family — Erie residents Melissa, twin brothers Daniel and Dennis, sister Katy Dukes and her hubby Shannon — opened up a seven-barrel brewing operation. Two years Susan France later, they decided to open a second location closer to home and converted an old Erie firehouse into a pizzeria and brewpub with 2,500 square feet of indoor drinking and eating, plus a 1,200 square foot wraparound porch for those seeking vitamin D. While the indoor atmosphere is a fine place to imbibe and watch TV, the majority of us were here for that patio. My server recomEcho Brewing server, Denise Jansson mended two of their darker offerings — Molasses Porter and Nocturnal Double IPA — but I waved her off. The sun was hot that day and that tends to change my approach to brew. Lager I craved and Echo’s Munich Helles was what I wanted.

Weighing in at a nice and light 4.9% ABV, Echo’s Helles is a perfect German pale lager, full-bodied and slightly sweet. It’s gold in the glass and it’s gold in the mouth. Hell, it even won a couple of gold medals at the Colorado State Fair (2012 and 2013). Just the sort of Sunday afternoon sipper I was after.

With my thirst quenched, I was ready to move on to more adventurous, but still light fare. Razz (5.3%), American Wheat with raspberry puree, is not as cloudy as you might expect but is refreshing. As was the Balefire Irish Red (4.9%). Balefire announced itself with loads of toffee and caramel off the nose that disappear slightly in the mouth. That’s when the malt took over.

After a few on the lighter side, I relented to my server’s suggestions to dabble in the dark (the sun’s gotta go down sometime), and took back the Molasses Porter (7.6%) and the Nocturnal. The Porter’s molasses flavor is pleasant but not overwhelming, a mild beer with plenty of toasted malt on the back.

But all of that was just a warm-up for the powerfully assertive Nocturnal (9.5%). This black double IPA looks as dark as a stout, with a brownish head to boot, and the flavor of anise and hops all over. It’s a heck of a lot brighter than it looks and packs one hell of a punch.

Here I’d come searching for lagers and wheats and left with the blistering flavor of zythos hops on my tongue. What pleasure discovery can be; I’ll have to return when the patio is buried under two feet of snow and warmth is needed.

They began writing us letters about how they disapproved of us when we moved in together before marriage. One launched a campaign to break us up because they figured my then-boyfriend didn’t know I was bisexual. (He did, and I’m out very publicly.) They boycotted our wedding because it was not in a Catholic church. They would not come to a party we had because a Muslim friend would be there. They’ve realized that in order for us to even rarely see them, they need to cool it, but they don’t think they have anything to apologize for.

After Trump’s election (#ITMFA), I’ve found it difficult to stomach them even in small doses. I grew up Catholic myself and was sent through gay conversion therapy, so I have a visceral reaction to this kind of bigotry, especially when it is directed toward my family of choice. My husband is also appalled by them and always puts us first, but the idea of not retaining a connection to his family of origin hurts him.

Do I suffer the occasional visit? Help!

Outrageously Unenlightened Turds Dear SHUTOUT: For the sake of your marriage, SHUTOUT, you should suffer the occasional visit — whether your husband sees his family on his own or you’re along for the ride — without punishing your husband for it.

Remember: You’re in this together, and private jokes, surreptitious eye-rolls and pot lozenges can go a long way toward making these events not just bearable but (mischievously) pleasurable. And seeing as you’ve already trained his family to cool it by cutting back on your time with them — a strategy I recommend — you can train them to keep things civil, hate-free and nonbiphobic by warning them in advance that you will get up and leave if they say anything shitty or unkind to you, about you or in front of you. Then follow through.

Wedding bells

W

eddings have a way of bringing me to a point of excruciatingly thorough reflection — thinking about the choices I’ve made and what they add up to, the ways I am a part of a family and how I’ll never quite fit in. They make me wonder about how it is that one generation yields to the next, forging on in the spirit of its progenitors amid an entirely new set of circumstances.

From my place in the third pew, I can hear Uncle Larry and Aunt Ellen bickering about the last time they were in Catholic church. Larry says 1965, but Ellen knows he’s wrong. It’s just that she can’t Wikimedia Commons prove it. Larry hushes her. I turn around to see the rest of my very extended and very Jewish family filling the next 10 rows. They sit in uncharacteristic quiet as a lone sopranist sings about Jesus and resurrection and love. We all feel more than a little out of place.

For the next hour the church is filled with prayers and amens and hymns of Ave Maria. At the priest’s direction we stand up then sit down, over and over again, my eldest relatives increasingly shaky on their feet. In their formal spring sandals you can see their toes shrivelled with age but also unnaturally contorted — twisting inward, bone bent and gnarled. Eighty years ago their feet were bound by poverty, stuffed into shoes three sizes too small, leaving them a lasting reminder of the walk they took to get through the Great Depression.

It’s been more than a hundred years since our family left the persecution of Eastern Europe for the tolerance and opportunity promised on

American shores. My great grandparents walked off a boat, through Ellis Island and straight onto a factory floor. They worked hard to support their quickly growing family, their Brooklyn house swelling with a seemingly endless stream of newly arrived immigrants and newborns.

As the family grew it became an exemplar of the American diaspora. From New York, Haases spread around the country — to California, Colorado, Florida, Oklahoma — each following a separate path to the comforts of upper-middle class life.

They became doctors and lawyers and businessowners and did their parents proud.

As if to claim the victories of their immigrant ancestors, our parents told us that we could grow up to be anything we wanted. Taking them seriously we became artists, writers, scientists and entrepreneurs, thinking we were just following our bliss and not realizing the weight of the freedom we carried forward.

It’s this position in life that I sit thinking about after the wedding, sipping on some wine, awkwardly hovering near the appetizers. Had I taken them too seriously? Is living as a defiantely single woman, as a tattooed artistturned-writer who is thoroughly embracing drug culture taking it too far?

Mid-thought someone taps on my shoulder and I turn around to see Larry and Ellen. “Do you think it’s dangerous to fly with edibles?” Larry asks abruptly, a rebellious smile spreading across his face.

“Depends...” I say warily, not realizing my extended family knew the depth of my relationship with weed. He grabs my arm in excitement and the

two of them regale me with stories about how expensive their pain medications are, how they’re becoming ineffective. “Ellen wants to try pot,” Larry says. “But it’s too hard to get in Florida. We thought you might know what to do.”

The conversation must have carried because soon my quiet corner near the food is the center of attention. My cousins come to talk about how bad weed is where they live in the French countryside, saying, “It looks like lawn clippings.” (“I guess that’s where we got the nickname ‘grass,’” I reply) Others talk about CBDs and about replacing sleeping pills with hash oil, giggling like kids sneaking liquor from their parents’ cabinet. From across the room my newlywed cousin winks and points at his pocket — he brought some along.

Later that night he casually offers me a drag of his joint. In the aftermath we talk about what it’s been like to become the reformers of obstinate traditions, how cool it’s been to watch our parents embrace a changing world and the gratification of living long enough to get what our family lived through — to understand how it shaped them, and us. Eventually he goes back inside to find his new wife and I wander off to find a stoop to sit on.

Looking up at the night sky, the stars have a way of connecting my story to the bigger one and I start to imagine marijuana like a Jewish immigrant family living inside a tiny house in Brooklyn during the Great Depression. Having freed itself from oppressive chains of persecution, it sits in waiting, accumulating resources and growing in allies until it no longer fit its circumstance and has no choice but to charge forward toward an evolving liberation, once again.

I look away from the sky and down at my feet.

At size 10-and-a-half, they’re large for an American woman, but in the context of my family they are a source of pride — evidence of the progress we’ve made over the years. I laugh at how long it took to see them that way, busy as I was trying to fit in.

Hemp for victory (but not in Boulder County)

rtie Elmquist, a Weld County farmer with Boulder County ties, thinks he has the answer for corn growers who are getting hammered by plunging corn prices — hemp.

U.S. farmers brought in a record corn crop of 15.1 billion bushels in 2016, more than 1.5 billion bushels larger than 2015’s crop of 13.6 billion bushels. The two crops came on the heels of bumper crops in 2014 and 2013 as well. The ensuing corn glut drove 2016 prices down to $3.40 a bushel from a peak of $6.89 in 2012. And farmers are starting to look for something more profitable to grow.

Elmquist thinks hemp is the answer. He’s started a new company called New Plains Agro that’s seeking 2,500 acres of land to plant hemp on in 2017.

“Hemp doesn’t take much fertilizer and requires one-third of the water it takes to grow corn,” he recently told a reporter for weekly agriculture magazine The Fence Post. “It’s an easy crop to grow, and is a great crop to add into the rotation as it helps restore soil health.

“We also believe hemp production, which relies on certified organic products to control weeds, could help transition producers over to a more organic system in all of their crops and shift them away from their dependence on GMO crops.”

Hemp is the same species as Cannabis sativa marijuana but a different strain. Modern hemp varieties have had their THC effectively bred out of them, down below 0.3 percent, but do have a significant CBD content.

The ways hemp and pot are grown are dramatically different. Marijuana plants are grown to maximize flower production, so they’re spaced several feet apart from each other. Hemp is grown to maximize the plant’s

fibrous content (among other qualities), so the seeds are planted only six or seven inches apart with a seed drill.

Marijuana growers attempt to eliminate seed content from the flowers, thus the name sensimilla (without seeds). Hemp growers seek to maximize seed production, since hemp seeds are valuable as a source of oil, meal and flour, which can be used as a source of both human food and animal feed.

The hemp plants can grow as tall as corn, producing long fibers that can be woven into cloth. In the 18th and 19th centuries hemp was a major resource for “home-spun” clothing, especially in northern climes where cotton couldn’t be grown, and for canvas for sail-making. The word “canvas” derives from cannabis.

Once the fiber is recovered from the stalk of the plant, the inner core, called a herd, remains. The herds can be mixed with lime and water to produce hemp-

crete, which Elmquist calls “a phenomenal building product.”

According to Elmquist, the various parts of a hemp crop can be worth more than $1,000 an acre, and the CBD in the flowers can be worth several thousand dollars more if it’s recovered and extracted.

New Plains Agro is looking to partner with landowners who may be interested in hemp production “through a cash rent and cost share basis.”

“We have the silent support of local bankers, but they aren’t very vocal about it just yet because they are still nervous about the federal government viewing hemp and marijuana plants as the same,” he told The Fence Post. “So under the plan we have put together, New Plains Agro would permit the acreage under its name, which removes the tenant farmer or landowner from having direct involvement with the hemp production. They would provide the land, do the irrigation, fertilize and control pests as needed, and we would consult with them on a weekly basis to address any management concerns.”

Hemp can be legally grown in 30 states, including Colorado, where it was legalized with the passage of Amendment 64.

But it can’t be legally grown in Boulder County, because shortly after the passage of Amendment 64 its priggish, nanny-statist County Commissioners banned the growing of any type of cannabis in the county’s agricultural zoning district.

The irony is that hemp isn’t a GMO crop, so it would be an obvious substitute for Bt and Roundup Ready corn and sugar beets that the commissioners are driving off the land, if they could get over their canna-phobia.

But is preparation really the key? We know you can be over-prepared and under-prepared but can you ever be preemptively prepared? Is there such a thing as being prepared too soon? These are the questions one man from Vermont is undoubtedly asking himself after being arrested for growing 40 marijuana plants in his home. His excuse, in a state that is currently debating legal-

SMOOTH MOVE, CHACHI This week, the world said goodbye to Happy Days actress Erin Moran.

While loving thoughts and prayers flooded in from friends, family and fans, one bone-headed voice stood out among the rest.

Upon first news of her death, costar and friend Scott Baio posted a warm tribute on Facebook. The boneheadedness came later, when Baio appeared on the radio program The Bernie & Sid Show. In talking about Moran’s Wikimedia Commons/Popular death, Baio Press Media Group lamented about her battles with addiction before saying, “For me, you do drugs or drink, you’re gonna die.

I’m sorry if that’s cold, but God gave you a brain, gave you the will to live and thrive and you gotta take care of yourself.”

Barely 48 hours after your friend dies and you’re already passing judgment on her? What a guy!

It’s never in good taste to pass judgment on someone else’s struggles, regardless if Moran’s death is linked to drugs or alcohol. But in preliminary reports, Moran’s cause of death was complications with stage-4 cancer. As Baio’s fictional Uncle Fonzie would say: “Uncool dude.”

As people understandably criticized Baio’s remarks, he then took to Twitter, blasting the haters saying, “You bash me ONLY because I support Pres [Donald Trump].”

Oh, Scott. We bash you because of your crass comments about your fallen friend, not because of your support for President I-Forgot-What-Country-IBombed-But-That-Chocolate-CakeWas-Good.

But honestly, it didn’t help.
