Highroad The New American Aristocracy

ultibillionaire brothers, Charles and David Koch, want to supplant America’s core democratic principle of majority rule — i.e. the will of The People — with their plutocratic principle of inviolable property rights, also known as rule by the wealthy minority. Their notion is that We The People cannot be allowed to tax the riches of the owner class, nor set rules on how they treat workers, consumers and society as a whole.

To set themselves up as the new American aristocracy, this clique of

Money in CD2 race

aturday, April 21, I attended the BoCo Dems candidate forum for Colorado’s second congressional district candidates Joe Neguse and Mark Williams. Attendees were asked to write and submit questions. That said, the moderator already had a typed list of questions, and she read from her prepared list. Audience members submitted written questions that were never asked, begging the question: What was the point other than to give the appearance of public input while stopping any pointed, uncomfortablefor-the-candidates questions?

My question, never asked, requested that Mr. Neguse explain his contributions from PACs ($400,000-plus to date) and from lawyers and partners at a who’s who of law firms representing the oil and gas industry. I asked what access these contributors think they are buying and how CD2 residents, facing an onslaught of neighborhood and Open Space drilling, should understand the influence of money in his campaign.

Mr. Neguse’s lawyer/contributors are partners and attorneys of law firms very familiar to communities sued by the Colorado Oil & Gas Association (COGA). The most well-known firm, Brownstein/Hyatt, represented COGA against citizen initiatives passed in Lafayette, Longmont and

Fort Collins. Another, Polsinelli, represents Extraction Oil & Gas in recent civil suits against nonviolent protestors, a videographer and a legal observer at a recent protest at Bella Romero school in Greeley. The list goes on: Beatty and Wozniak, Patton Boggs, Holland & Hart, Snell & Wilmer, and more.

Mr. Neguse said climate change is an “existential threat.” Apparently not when it comes to his campaign contributions.

Many Boulder County electeds have endorsed Mr. Neguse, including County Commissioners Jones, Gardner and Domenico, Lafayette’s mayor Christine Berg, Lafayette Councilor Jamie Harkins, state Senator Matt Jones, state Rep Mike Foote, Boulder Mayor Suzanne Jones and several Boulder City Councilors. Do these endorsers know about Mr. Neguses’s campaign contributors and their employers? Or do they just not care?

Local families care. They don’t want double-talk about climate change and clean air; they don’t want oil and gas money in Front Range races — either directly or indirectly — and they don’t want wells in their communities.

danish plan Democracy dies in darkness — among other places

arly last year the Washington Post, after vetting about 500 candidate slogans, adopted as its motto the phrase “Democracy Dies in Darkness.”

An interesting choice, considering that a defining amount of the Washington Post’s content is currently derived from anonymous sources.

Here’s another slogan that’s been knocking around newsrooms and J-schools for decades: “Reporters are only as good as their sources.”

Indeed.

The problem here is that the Post’s use of anonymous sources means readers can’t tell how good the Post’s sources are, and by extension how good the Post is.

The sources might be terrific, like Mark Felt, aka Deep Throat, during Watergate, or a bit squishier, like Andrew McCabe and James Comey today. But the reader doesn’t know until much later.

Worse, the paper doesn’t really know until much later.

The Post’s, or any other paper’s, use of anonymous sources should prompt its readers to ask themselves several questions, including: Are the sources reliable?

Do the sources have an agenda, and if so what is it?

Does the paper have an agenda, and if so, what is it?

Are the sources using the paper to further their agenda? Is the paper using the sources to further its agenda?

How can readers tell if the Post’s sources are reliable, other than on the strength of the Post’s assertion that they are?

Does the source have a public purpose for leaking, or is his or her motive more personal — vengeance, settling a score or currying favor, for instance.

Does the paper have a public purpose for printing the anonymously sourced story, or are its motives politically- or business-driven, or even voyeuristic?

What are the real stakes for the sources and the paper? Is the leaker remaining anonymous because he or she “is not authorized to speak on the matter” (a boiler-plate rationalization that has come to be routinely used in news stories), or because, like Edward Snowden or Chelsea Manning he or she is flirting with treason?

And so on.

In the past year the Post has published scores of stories about Trump that are anonymously sourced, most of them critical. Critical enough for a reader, even one with a left-leaning bias, to conclude that Boulder Weekly

the paper is out to get Trump — by delegitimizing his election, by calling his judgment and sanity into question, and by picking up on his bread-crumb sins.

The one thing we know with certainty about the Post’s sources is that, regardless of their motives, they are unwilling to pay the price that might be extracted for

revealing their names. Or more plainly, they’re too chicken to come forward.

Most American papers, and especially ones whose content is nationally circulated like the Post, demand that all meetings and all records be open.

They don’t hesitate to print classified information to the detriment of national

security. Today’s papers will print military secrets in time of war, publication of which will endanger both troops in the field and the American People.

Democracy for America (DFA), a political action committee founded by former presidential candidate Howard Dean, claims that its mission is “to take our democracy back from corporations and the wealthy few, and aggressively combat growing income inequality.” Yet, when it comes to Colorado’s Second Congressional District, DFA has abandoned that pledge by endorsing a candidate who has been hand-picked by the Democratic Party establishment and is taking donations from representatives of some of the most powerful corporate interests in the state.

DFA has blasted the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee for inserting itself into campaigns in Pennsylvania and Illinois in an attempt to sabotage progressive candidates. But here in Colorado, DFA is doing exactly the same thing.

A recent story in the Boulder Reporter cited complaints that the state Democratic establishment had early on selected Joe Neguse to be the heir apparent to incumbent Jared Polis, who

is running for governor. And former University of Colorado Regent Jim Martin wrote in an op-ed in the Boulder Daily Camera that “a Democratic bigwig showed an advanced state of tone-deafness by dictating that, ‘We have to clear the field for Joe Neguse’ ... a full year before the primary on June 28, 2018.”

That maneuvering shouldn’t sit well with the district’s Democratic voters, who like candidates who stand for robust policies that address the needs of all Americans. Why DFA would endorse Joe Neguse over a truly progressive candidate like Mark Williams, who refuses to take PAC donations or money from oil and gas interests, is a question only it can answer. But in the upcoming Democratic primary, district voters will have the opportunity to make up their own minds and support someone who will fight for them and not follow the dictates of the party establishment — in Colorado or in Congress.

with even less hesitation — as when it printed the names of 1,271 government organizations and 1,931 private companies working on programs related to counterterrorism, homeland security and intelligence in about 10,000 locations across the United States.

A team of a couple dozen Post investigative reporters spent two years collecting the information from non-classified sources. While in theory anyone could have done so, it’s doubtful that the intelligence agencies of most of the world’s 200-plus countries had the resources or the knowledge of the United States to have done the same.

Ditto al Qaeda or the Islamic State. It would be interesting to know to what extent the Post reached out to anonymous sources to compile its lists.)

Yet the press defends with equal vigor its constitutional and moral right to conduct its news and information gathering in secret.

The fact that this is hypocritical is self-evident but beside the point.

The real issue is that there are times when government’s ability to govern effectively, let alone to govern justly, is compromised by its inability to keep secrets. And by the press’ refusal to respect the need for a measure of privacy in the deliberative process — try fashioning a

compromise in a public negotiation — or to respect the privacy of public officials.

OK, you’re going to tell me that Trump is a gross, boorish man. You’re right. So were Andrew Jackson and Lyndon Johnson, and a lot of other Presidents.

It used to be that presidents were routinely profane and insulting in private.

The press kept it off the record. Today it attempts to weaponize non-public speech.

To be sure, there are plenty of examples where the use of anonymous sources has served the public good. And plenty of counter-examples as well.

The Post and most of the rest of the national press corps has routinized the use of anonymous sources to the point where American journalism is turning into one long anonymous letter, and that is damaging its integrity, credibility, legitimacy and the support of the American people for the First Amendment.

It’s true that Democracy can die in metaphorical darkness, as the Post asserts.

It’s also true that it can be killed by criminally negligent homicide in broad daylight or assassinated at high noon.

Which is why the most important question you can ask the writer of an anonymously sourced story is also the most obvious: Who told you that?

Another reason not to arm teachers

Regarding “Gun Control” (Re: News, April 12, 2018). Yes, no. 18, arming teachers is an ugly, dangerous idea — for even one more reason than mentioned: What happens when a teacher loses it?

It’s a worst-case scenario: Someone armed, supposedly trusted and already inside the school. The idea of arming teachers relies on the foolish assumptions that you can tell the Good Guys from the Bad Guys, and that a Good Guy never turns Bad. Sure, the odds are tiny, but they’re not zero, and there are a lot of public school teachers. Do you bet against millions-to-one odds?

Teachers often face major stress already: bratty kids, angry helicopter parents, clueless admins, just for starters. If a teacher snaps, having a gun could mean the difference between an angry outburst and a massacre.

Colorado students deserve fair debt options

I remember stories my dad told me of what my grandfather called wasted youth. This stereotype of partying all night and studying all day is not a full picture of a student’s time. For many students, working during school becomes a necessity. But part time work these days doesn’t come close to paying for a 4-year degree.

For more students than ever before, student loans are the only option they see to get through college, and from application to graduation, both students and their parents are inundated with offers for student loan financing. Students are often forced to take these loan servicers’ word and trust them to be fair.

Unfortunately, student loan servicers in Colorado are rarely required to be licensed. According to the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau (CFPB), student loan servicers have used the lack of oversight to keep students on the hook as long as possible by: failing to post payments on time, applying payments to interest instead of the principle, leading students away from the quickest repayment options, and more.

Without state licensing of student loan servicers, Colorado students and their families are at risk of the same fraudulent treatment. By 2017 Coloradans had already filed 900 complaints against fraudulent Boulder Weekly

practice by loan servicers, an increase of 78 percent from years prior.

This session, the Colorado state legislature will consider the Student Loan Servicer Accountability Act. This bill would create a state license for student loan servicers. The act would provide the same basic protections to students and their families that already exist for mortgage, credit card and business loans. Colorado students deserve the opportunity to pay off their loans fairly and to not be defrauded into inescapable debt.

No fracking here

Thousands of earthquakes have occurred in Oklahoma and surrounding areas since 2009. This is up from an average of two earthquakes a year from 1978. Scientific studies attribute the rise in earthquakes to the disposal of wastewater produced during oil extraction that has been injected more deeply into the ground.

Near fracking areas there is also a 400 percent increase in childhood leukemia and a significant increase in cancer and respiratory disease for those living within one-half-mile of active well pads.

The state of Colorado has the power to tell the County Commissioners to allow fracking on our land even though we Boulder residents paid more than $100 million to create Boulder County Open Space.

Right now over 11,000 acres of Open Space and conservation easements are targeted for 192 fracking wells as early as this Spring 2018. However, the legal superiority of the state over the county does not apply to citizens. Since 2013, the Ben & Jerry’s co-founder has been at the forefront of a national money-stamping campaign to rid U.S. politics of corporate influence.

“The root cause of [any issue regarding] most anything that anybody cares about, the environment, education, health care, it all comes down to money in politics,” Cohen says. “And until we get rid of money in politics, we’re never going to get the environmental laws, financial laws or health-care laws we really need.”

As of April 22, Cohen is in fifth place with 214 reported sightings of his stamped bills in 35 states, just behind Greenfield with 220.

Greenfield and Cohen started Ben & Jerry’s in 1978, growing from a small ice cream shop in Burlington, Vermont, into a multi-million dollar company the duo sold to Unilever in 2000 for approximately $326 million. Despite their personal success as businessmen, Cohen says he and Greenfield have never operated with a cutthroat businesses mentality that focuses on profit at the expense of people.

“That doesn’t give me any sense of joy, personally,” he says. “We have a belief in equity and economic justice and democracy. Maybe those things might be considered quaint, but we believe in them. We believe unless we work to preserve our democracy and return our country to the democracy it’s supposed to be, we’re all going to be nothing more than corporate pawns.”

The Stampede partners with other organizations working toward a constitutional amendment that would overturn the Citizens United decision. But doing so is quite the process, requiring a two-thirds vote by both houses of Congress, then ratification by three-fourths of the states.

Colorado was one of the first states to voice its opposition to the Citizens United decision, passing Amendment 65 in November 2012 with support of 74 percent of voters. Since then, 18 other states have also passed resolutions calling for a constitutional amendment to address campaign finance reform, as well as 800 other municipalities. The Stampede also claims roughly 200 members of Congress express support of the idea.

Additionally, the Stamp Stampede promotes a Voting Rights Advancement Act to combat the rise of voter suppression through recent voter ID laws and other discriminatory policies being passed around the country.

Momentum is building, as Stamp Stampede has sold 14,000 stamps in 2018 alone and 4,500 people pledged to stamp 1.9 million bills for the eighth anniversary of Citizens United in January. As the grassroots campaign grows, Cohen remains optimistic about the future no matter what the federal government does to make headlines each day.

“You can either be hopeful or throw up your hands and say, ‘We’re screwed,’” Cohen says. “I choose to be hopeful.”

n Friday, April 20, Boulder Weekly left the Denver Press Club with 27 awards — including 10 first-place honors — from the Society of Professional Journalist’s Top of the Rockies contest. Boulder Weekly competed in the 30,000 to 75,000 circulation category against news media from Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.

Boulder Weekly took home a first place award in the Special Section category for our 2017 anniversary feature, “Celebrating local people who make the world a better place,” written by editorial staffers Joel Dyer, Matt Cortina, Angela K. Moran’s piece looked at whether the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment is providing the public with accurate information about the known and potential health impacts of oil and gas development.

Angela K. Evans won a second place award for Religion General Reporting for “Hate and hope,” about the rise in threats against Muslim, refugee and Jewish communities in the days following Donald Trump’s controversial “travel ban.”

In Politics Enterprise Reporting, Matt Cortina took second for “How the West was lost,” a recount of Cortina’s road trip to several national monuments after an executive order from Trump put all 27 national monuments at risk of losing protection.

n November 2016, Jose (a pseudonym) found himself at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) contract detention facility in Aurora. He had been living in the U.S. since 2002, first in Iowa, where he met his wife, a U.S. citizen, and later in Arizona. The couple has two young daughters together.

On April 25, Attorney General Jeff Sessions reversed a DOJ decision to suspend the Legal Orientation Program, just five days before funding was to be terminated.

Jose had never interacted with federal authorities before. But in July 2016, he was taken into ICE custody after being arrested by local police.

A few months later, he was transferred to the Aurora facility because there was no longer enough space in the Arizona detention center where he was being held.

“I was very scared of not seeing my children again and not being able to stay here (in the country),” he says, via an interpreter. “I just sat around thinking about what was going to happen, if they were going to let me stay or not. I didn’t know what to do and I looked for a lawyer

but I couldn’t hire one.”

Then, attorneys with Rocky Mountain Immigration Advocacy Network (RMIAN) came to the detention facility, and Jose attended the Legal Orientation Program (LOP), a federally funded information session that aquaints people in civil immigration detention with their rights as they move through immigration court proceedings.

Through LOP, Jose connected with a pro bono lawyer, who explained he could be eligible for deportation relief, given his family situation.

“It was helpful. They explained bond and how I could get out,” Jose says. “I was very thankful because through the lawyer I was able to stay here with my family.”

Until Wednesday afternoon, April 25, the program that helped Jose was on life support. Earlier in the month, the Department of Justice announced its intention to suspend funding as of April 30 without any prior warning. But just as suddenly, Attorney General Jeff Sessions reversed his position this week and will allow LOP to remain in place while the program is audited.

That’s good and important news for those who need and administer this vital program.

“It provides what is the fundamental underpinning of our country and our legal system, which is: there should be equal access to justice for everyone,” says Mekela Goehring, executive director of RMIAN. “And there (are) just fundamental fairness considerations in terms of providing people info and the tools to be able to make these decisions.”

Distributed through the Vera Institute of Justice in New York, the federal government allots roughly $8 million a year to 19 different nonprofits around the country, working in 37 immigration detention facilities and serving approximately 53,000 people a year.

“The Department of Justice’s announcement today (April 25) that it will reinstate the Legal Orientation Program is the right and just decision for a program that never should have been threatened in the first place,” Goerhing says. “The relentless advocacy and awareness-raising done by RMIAN’s clients, supporters, staff members, members of the media and elected representatives in Colorado who spoke out to save the Legal Orientation Program showed the necessity and power of this work for individuals ensnared in civil immigration detention.”

LOP funds are dispersed monthly and represent about 20 percent of RMIAN’s annual budget, or a total of $240,000.

The Colorado nonprofit was one of the first six sites to launch pilot LOP projects under President George W. Bush in 2003.

“It was started really as an innovative model to both promote immigration court efficiency as well as provide some really fundamental protections for people in detention who are going through immigration court proceedings,” Goehring says.

Five afternoons a week, RMIAN lawyers and staff experts provide the hour-long legal trainings at the Aurora facility, serving more than 2,000 individuals each year. All of the lawyers working with RMIAN are bilingual in Spanish and English, and have access to telephonic interpretation for people with other language needs. RMIAN also works on an individual basis with detainees, helping them gather appropriate information for their cases.

“The LOP has really been a lifeline for the vast majority of individuals going through these proceedings,” Goehring says. “The information and the value of that information on the individuals who are in detention really can’t be overstated. Because for the majority of them, had they not had the opportunity to talk to a RMIAN attorney and get this information, they may have simply accepted a deportation order without having access to these legal protections that operate under our existing immigration law.”

Through the program, RMIAN lawyers have helped victims of crime and human trafficking avert deportation, as well as people with legal permanent residency and other factors, like asylum and humanitarian protections, which allow them to stay under existing immigration law. They’ve also helped people realize when they don’t have a case and there is no legal remedy for them to remain in the country. In certain cases, RMIAN also connects people in detention with pro bono lawyers who represent them in court.

Classified as civil cases, and not criminal, immigrants facing deportation don’t have the right to a court appointed attorney, and in many cases LOP provides the only legal aid they may ever receive.

Goehring says 91 percent of people at the Aurora facility will not have an attorney heading into their hearings.

“Immigration law cases are some of the most complex legal proceedings both procedurally and substantively,” Goehring says. “The types of cases that individuals are fighting for and litigating are some of the highest stakes cases that an individual may encounter in their life. A loss may mean deportation or banishment from a country where they’ve lived their entire life; it may mean a return to a country that they fled because of persecution or other harm; It may mean separation from family members.”

Immigration courts are severely backlogged around the country, and Colorado has the longest wait-time in the nation at an average of 1,058 days — almost three years. A 2012 review of the LOP found the program saved the federal government almost $18 million a year, since detainees who went through the program typically spent an average of six fewer days in detention. Additionally, a 2017 case study of the immigration court system commissioned by the federal government found that better access to attorneys helps shorten delays in the court system and the federal government should consider expanding LOP in response.

In an email to Boulder Weekly prior to Session’s April 25 announcement, a DOJ official said: “LOP has been paused in order to undertake a review of the program, which has not been completed for more than five years. As this program costs taxpayers $6 million per year, we believe that audits of this nature should occur more frequently than every half of a decade.”

Despite the cost-reduction facts and Sessions’ promise to slash the backlog in half by 2020, the DOJ could still suspend the program following the audit.

Colorado legislators were quick to criticize the original decision to suspend the program, calling on the DOJ to conduct its evaluation while continuing to fund the LOP. In a letter to Sessions, Rep. Jared Polis states, “To suspend this program under the auspices of conducting further evaluation is short-sighted and would destroy an indisputably effective program that has been successfully operating for the last 15 years.”

On April 18, Colorado Senator Michael Bennet signed onto a letter to the DOJ with 21 other senators demanding funding for LOP to remain in place.

A spokesperson for the Senator says, “[Bennet] believes that suspending the Legal Orientation Program will undermine due process for Coloradans who otherwise don’t have access to essential information as they prepare to navigate the immigration court system. While he supports oversight of the program so that it continues to operate efficiently, he doesn’t

believe it has to be suspended while the review is ongoing.”

Following its announced suspension, Bennet called on the DOJ to restart the program that he claims has been proven to save taxpayer money, while also guaranteeing due process for a vulnerable sector of the population and helping to reduce the backlogs in immigration court.

It appears these congressional pleas have had an impact on Sessions and the DOJ, at least for now.

In a Senate subcomittee meeting on April 25, Sessions explained his decision to keep LOP intact: “I recognize, however, that the Committee has spoken on this matter, and, out of deference to the Committee, I have ordered there be no pause while that review is conducted. I look forward to evaluating the findings and will be in communication with the Committee when they are available.”

Like many things during the Trump administration, the future of the program, the nonprofits who administer it and the people in detention who so badly need it, is uncertain.

“I think it goes without saying, that if you completely shut this program down, a program that has been operating for the last 15 years as a national network, to even think about restarting it is going to require such a huge and significant amount of resources,” Goehring says. “We must do everything we can to ensure this vital lifeline continues well into the future.”

RMIAN is currently strategizing what it will do to keep providing legal services at the Aurora facilities should LOP funding ultimately be suspended.

It has been one year since Jose was released from immigration detention and was reunited with his family in Arizona. After attending LOP at the Aurora facility, and with the help of a pro bono attorney, Jose was able to prove that his deportation would cause extreme and unusual hardship to a family member who is a citizen, since his wife is disabled and he is the primary caregiver for both her and their daughters.

“It would have been very difficult for me to know what to do,” without the lawyer’s help, Jose says. “I want to thank [RMIAN] for helping me with my case.”

Now a lawful permanent resident, Jose walks through life with more confidence, no longer afraid to leave the house for fear of getting picked up by immigration officials. He is, however, troubled by the potential future loss of the Legal Orientation Program and what that would mean for other immigrants.

“It’s not right because there are many people who are detained that need those services,” he says. “It’s not right for the government to take away the help that the people need, the same help that I got.”

For the past several days, NASA scientists have been telling the other journalists on this rooftop that TESS will search for planets around the nearest and brightest stars in the sky.

Although the refrigerator-sized satellite will certainly find the closest neighbors to our solar system, it will do much more to probe the complex life stories of stars like our sun.

I am attending the launch as a journalist because my efforts to attend as a scientist were unsuccessful. Aside from the core science team based at

the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and NASA’s Goddard Spaceflight Center (GSFC) in Maryland, only a handful of astronomers from across the country were invited to attend. The VIP list also includes some high-ranking representatives of a large international collaboration that I work with, and a small group of guest investigators whose proposals for exploiting the TESS observations were selected for funding.

In early March I applied for media accreditation, and in early April I learned that I’m on the list. A few days after making last-minute travel arrangements, I am in Cape Canaveral, Florida.

from planets that pass in front of their star (see “Prospecting nearby worlds,” Boulder Weekly, Jan. 11, 2018).

Planetary systems are oriented randomly in space, so even if every star has planets only a small fraction will reveal their existence by casting a shadow in our direction. By design, more than 95 percent of the targets that TESS monitors will show no evidence of planetary systems, but they will provide a rich set of observations for understanding how stars change as they grow older.

“There’s really a huge potential for additional science,” says Stephen Rinehart, project scientist for TESS at the GSFC. “From an exoplanet perspective, whether a planet is habitable or not depends a lot on its star. If we don’t understand the star very well, then we’re very limited in what we can understand about the planet.”

In an effort to improve their understanding of the target stars, the TESS mission forged a collaboration with an international team called the TESS Asteroseismic Science Consortium (TASC). Led by scientists in Denmark, but with the participation of astronomers around the globe, TASC exploits a subtle analysis method called asteroseismology to characterize the sizes and ages of stars and their planetary systems.

The arrangement is good for the mission because it can benefit from the work of hundreds of scientists at no cost to NASA. It’s good for the international team members because they can use this relationship with the mission to justify financial support from their home countries.

“It’s a friendly relationship, and a good collaboration going forward,” Rinehart notes. “I think they’re going to have a lot of fun with the data too.”

erate energy from the nuclear fusion of hydrogen into helium deep in their cores, which is transported out toward the surface where it is radiated away.

Turbulent boiling motions in the outermost regions generate sound waves that travel through the star and back to the surface, analogous to the seismic waves generated inside our planet during an earthquake.

In the case of stars, these sound waves cause periodic modulations in brightness at the surface. The frequency of the waves reveals the size of the object, for the same reason that a cello sounds different from a violin. The speed of the sound waves also depends on the composition of the material that they travel through; because stars convert hydrogen into helium over their lifetimes, it’s also possible to infer their ages.

The brightness measurements made by TESS will also allow astronomers to estimate the rotation rates and overall level of magnetic activity in the stars, two essential ingredients in the generation of harmful flares that could make otherwise habitable planets less conducive to the development of life.

The countdown at Cape Canaveral continues, and I am awestruck as the Falcon-9 rocket begins to rise gently into the Florida sky. Thirty seconds later, the deep rumble of the engine finally reaches the rooftop where I am standing, sending its own seismic waves through the massive building beneath me.

The evening news will herald this moment as the beginning of a search for nearby worlds, but most of what TESS actually achieves will be much more interesting and textured than the one-dimensional picture of exoplanet discovery that captures the public’s imagination.

here’s an invasion going on down the middle of the U.S., as America’s arid West advances eastward. Imperceptibly, decades of climate change have shifted the natural boundary between the dry West and the fertile farmlands of the eastern states by 140 miles, according to a new study by U.S. scientists.

In effect, what was once marked by the 100th meridian is now at 98 degrees of longitude.

The 100th meridian is one of those astronomically determined lines that emerge from what the researchers call “psychogeography.” Just as the historic 38th parallel separates the hostile states of North and South Korea, the Mason-Dixon line marks a notional but blood-stained boundary between the northern states and the American South, and the Greenwich meridian formally replaced the Paris meridian as the notional ground zero for the measure of universal time, so too has the 100th meridian entered U.S. consciousness.

It was first cited 140 years ago, when a pioneer geologist and surveyor identified a divide running from north to south between land that received ample rainfall, and soils in the so-called rain-shadow of the Rockies that could be classed as arid.

And, conveniently, it could be measured as 100 degrees west of Greenwich in the U.K., the starting point for lines of longitude. In two papers in the journal Earth Interactions, researchers have taken a

closer look at the reality of this historic divide and the changing nature of the U.S. landscape as a consequence of climate change driven by ever-greater ratios of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, in response to ever-more profligate human use of fossil fuels.

They confirm that in the 140 years since the first observation of that divide, the line through North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas has shifted east by 140 miles: in Texas, this is a shift from Abilene to Fort Worth.

In 1878, the geologist John Wesley Powell noted the transformation observed as he crossed a northsouth band of terrain in the U.S. “On the east, luxuriant growth of grass is seen, and the gaudy flowers of the order Compositae make the prairie landscape beautiful.

ground gradually becomes naked, with ‘bunch’ grasses here and there; now and then a thorny cactus is seen, and the yucca plant thrusts out its sharp bayonets,” he later wrote.

Today, west of the line, population drops away sharply and farms are fewer but bigger. To the east, most of the crop is maize, a plant greedy for water. To the west, the dominant harvest is wheat, which is more resistant to aridity.

The researchers predict that drylands will continue to move eastward with the century, as global temperatures continue to rise, and eventually trigger large-scale changes.

Such research is simply another way of identifying the impacts of climate change. None of it should be a surprise. Researchers have repeatedly warned that the U.S. climate is changing with ever-greater risks of climate extremes, including ever-more devastating droughts, and with increasing risks of forest fire.

So the 100th meridian study is another way of telling the story again.

“Powell talked eloquently about the 100th meridian, and this concept of a boundary line has stayed with us down to the current day,” said Richard Seager of Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, who led the study. “We wanted to ask whether there really is such a divide, and whether it’s influenced human settlement.”

t’s just after 6 a.m. and Aisha Weinhold is sitting at her desk with a cup of coffee. She looks out the kind of window that would make any office-bound worker swoon: nearly floor to ceiling, wider than arm’s reach, with Aspen Mountain neatly framed and its ski runs in plain view.

The Roaring Fork River cuts through the lower righthand corner of the scene. When you’re on the indoor side of outdoor business, this isn’t a bad gig.

NPR’s Up First credits fade as Weinhold flips through a hardcover planner. As founder and executive director of the largest female-focused adventure film festival in the world, no day looks quite the same.

those dreams a reality. “It’s our duty as human beings to give our dreams and aspirations as much weight as our day-to-day decisions,” she insists.

So when the idea for an adventure film festival that celebrated the accomplishments of non-male, non-white people struck (she was sailing across the Pacific Ocean at the time: “It felt as close to a divine calling as a Buddhist 18-year-old could experience”), there was only one direction to go: Create it. In 2014 No Man’s Land Film Festival (NMLFF) was born, and now it tours the world.

Weinhold grew up steeped in the outdoor industry, skiing Aspen’s winter slopes, then climbing, biking and running around Carbondale the rest of the year.

Her middle-school bedroom walls, plastered with female surfers and faraway mountainscapes, hinted at the woman she wanted to be: bold and brave, rafting down a class-five river, but equally comfortable in cowboy boots, a sundress and gemstone earrings at the post-run barbecue. No single role model fit her bill.

The 5Point Adventure Film Festival debuted in her hometown in 2007. Over the years, the festival made quite an impression on her.

“I would scour the program for films with women, see if the filmmakers were attending, then arrive early to grab a seat so I would not miss a single expression,” she says.

5Point is known for showcasing documentaries about human adventure feats (think extreme kayaking or slacklining or base jumping), and for a long time the programs included mostly, if not exclusively, white men as the protagonists.

In the same vein as 5Point, other premier outdoor industry film festivals, like Banff Mountain Film Festival and Telluride Mountainfilm, have traditionally let narratives of white men dominate the screen, effectively passing the stories of nonmale, non-white people under the public’s radar.

“The men on the screen are incredible athletes and amazing characters,” Weinhold says, “but I remember leaving every year and thinking that if I wanted that in my life, I would have to marry into it. No Man’s Land was born from a deep void that no one else was filling, so I decided to do it. I knew that I couldn’t be the only one who was feeling like my story was so grossly underrepresented.”

In the past three years, NMLFF has regularly sold out venues across the country, hosted its own multiday flagship festival in Carbondale each fall, and toured internationally. Next week, select films from NMLFF will be screened at Neptune Mountaineering, and Skye Habberfield, the store’s marketing manager, has long been excited about bringing NMLFF to Boulder.

“Neptune has classically brought in all the oldtimers and legends of the sport,” he says. “It’s really neat to see a film festival not [only] focused on women, [but also] on the up-and-coming women in sports.”

As the tour growth and full houses indicate, response from the public has been resoundingly positive. Initial logistical kinks of orchestrating a film festival have largely smoothed out — no more lastminute scrambling for rental auditorium chairs or scheduling mishap nightmares — as the festival grows. But the challenges have changed.

“Our newer hurdles feel stickier,” Weinhold says.

“A major challenge that we have been working to address is diversity.”

here’s an earthiness in the air as several young people work on potting some 300 flowers in the lobby of the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art. “I think we need some blue,” says artist Patty Ortiz, looking over the crop of white, pink, yellow and red. She’s in the process of installing her latest exhibit, Work Won’t Kill You: I am Here, a performance art piece highlighting the stories and experiences of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients.

An Obama-era program that provides deportation relief and work authorization for 800,000 young people who were brought to the U.S. as children, DACA has faced uncertainty in the last year. The Trump administration intends to terminate the program, but federal judges have ordered it remains intact until legal challenges can make their way

through the courts. At the same time, Congress has failed to find consensus on immigration reform and pass legislation to protect these young people.

“With the recent developments that have been happening at the federal level and the quandary that these involuntary childhood immigrants are facing these days, ... we felt it was an opportunity for us to present their perspectives and be a platform to raise awareness about their issues,” says BMoCA Executive Director David Dadone. “And that’s where we as a contemporary art museum can really make an impact in our community and beyond — by presenting the facts and their point of view through an installation and art performance and present them to the community.”

While they are working, Ortiz has set boundaries for interactions: The young people can’t associate with anyone coming through the museum. They can’t answer questions or talk to museum staff. They are performing in a sense and must arrange and water plants in silence. They can also sit and rest on a few benches included in the space.

“What I liked about that is a lot of them have said that they have had to pretty much be invisible to authorities, to a lot of people, and so to me this is very representative of that,” Ortiz says.

“I become the conduit by which these guys speak,” she continues. “But it’s art, it’s not a political statement.

I stay away from the political stuff they talk about to make it more about their human experience.”

Or at least she tries to, as it’s nearly impossible to deny how current federal policies and anti-immigrant rhetoric has affected their experiences. And the young people were integral in choosing the content for the video.

All in all, I am Here gives them something to do in the face of uncertainty.

“Our voices are being heard,” Miguel says, as he fills the pot with soil around a white daisy, waters it and places it in the sunshine to grow.

I

t took a few re-schedules before we managed to get Steven Wilson on the phone, and in retrospect, it was pretty easy to understand why. Certainly not because Wilson is press-shy, or more commonly among working musicians, press averse; he is an engaging conversationalist, a merchant and batsman of ideas and, to interviewers anyway, an artist largely immune from the cloak of toxic cynicism typically burdening the underdog rock musician. He is one of music’s best thinkers, possibly one of its last true believers.

No, he was just busy. The English composer and guitarist, founder and once-frontman for the prog outfit Porcupine Tree, had been preparing for one of those career-defining events, a three-day, standing-roomonly run at London’s storied Royal Albert Hall.

We finally connected the afternoon after the third and final show of the RAH gig, which, by Wilson’s estimate, was a success; but even better, after weeks of planning and rehearsals

and film production logistics and the pressures of a hometown, three-night gig presenting new and nominally controversial music, it was at least over.

“Yeah, three very, very intense days. Everything has been building up to this moment. A hometown show, three nights, arguably the greatest venue in the world, and you’re filming it too. So the pressure couldn’t be any greater,” Wilson says.

“And it’s my name on the ticket, on the marquis. Everything is down to me.

So yeah, I’m glad it was a success.”

Discussing his latest release To The Bone, inevitably led Wilson into discourse on musical identity and the struggles (or triumphs) of managing one’s artistic personality in a world cluttered with faces and voices and brands bleeding into each other, competing for attention and allegiance.

Wilson prepped his listeners last spring and early summer that this would be a different kind of record, a more “pop” record than his fans had come to expect from him, certainly

more so than 2015’s shaded and cerebral Hand.Cannot.Erase. “Pop” is not a label commonly associated with Wilson’s music, which has trended distinctly toward a progressive, often darkly aggro veneer; long compositions, darker subject matter, alternately rageful and somber, calculating and feral.

To The Bone saw its release in August, and while Wilson didn’t abandoned his mission to tackle deeper subject matter (fake news/disinformation on the title track, Europe’s refugee crisis in “Refuge,” misplaced hope in politics in “The Same Asylum As Before,” suicidal extremists on “Detonation”), he did create a tighter record, more direct and instrumentally focused.

And in the mix comes the sixth track on the program, “Permanating,” a helium-lofted Style Council/Pet Shop Boys mashup with a staccato piano figure, double-time percussion chassis and soaring vocal chorus about celebrating the moment because life is short but totally awesome so enjoy it with your Boulder Weekly

“The most popular song every night in the show. Without question,” Wilson insists.

“And what I take away from that is that, although a lot of rock fans have a kind of immediate, negative response to the idea of a pop song, actually, at the end of the day, everyone can enjoy a catchy, great pop song.”

For the stalwart faithful who have held up Wilson as the bearer of the latter-day prog torch, the inheritor of Floydian/Frippian DNA, “Permanating” seems to have been received as, at best, an anomaly, or at worst, a bit of a troll. Wilson is OK with that.

“See, the kind of people who say those kinds of things are the people who I think need to be upset anyway.

The idea that I make ‘generic’ music is completely alien to me. I never, ever, said that I play a particular kind of music.

“I grew up in a house where my parents introduced me very early on to fantastic pop music — Abba, the Bee Gees, the Carpenters — at the same time they would introduce me to Dark Side of the Moon. That was always part of my DNA.” Wilson also reached out for lyrical help on a couple of tunes, notably the opening track “To The Bone,” to The Bard of Swindon, XTC founder Andy Partridge.

So I’ve gotten to know him very well,” Wilson says.

“And this song, ‘To The Bone’, I knew it had to be a little more, shall we say, ‘political,’ with a capital P, literally about politics, the whole Trump thing and the Brexit thing, and it was not something I felt very comfortable myself writing about. I guess I’m better at writing about characters and these sorts of inner monologues and short stories about characters. And Andy is better at dealing with these big, global kinds of issues.”

H

andel’s opera Ariodante is as old as 1516, when its story was first recorded, and as new as today.

Its theme, the linchpin of many operas, is timeless: a man being believed before a woman. “#MeToo, right?” Leigh Homan, the director of CU’s Eklund Opera Program, says. “This is so relevant.”

The next CU opera production, Ariodante will be presented April 26-29 in the intimate Music Theatre. Holman is the stage director, and Zachary Carrettin, director of the Boulder Bach Festival, will conduct the orchestra and a cast of CU students.

For a Baroque opera, the plot is fairly simple; a human drama with no divine intervention and no magic. The scheming Polinesso wants to marry princess Ginevra in

This is not the first time Holman has based an old opera on a new television drama: two years ago she directed Monteverdi’s Coronation of Poppea in the style of House of Cards. This updating works because Baroque operas are based on classical literature and mythology, which express basic human themes: love, jealousy, honor, deception and lust for power. Those timeless themes also underlie the modern dramas.

Relevance is only one challenge of Baroque opera.

Aspects of the musical style can be difficult for modern audiences and performers alike. For example, Ariodante, like most Baroque operatic heroes, was written for a castrato and will be sung by female sopranos. This challenges the audience to recognize the heroic characters, but even more so, it challenges the singers, as castratos could sing long phrases with great force.

The drama has a start-stop quality, with action happening quickly in recitative and then stopping completely for an emotional aria. In Ariodante, an attempted assassination happens in a matter of seconds, and then the characters pause to reflect on action that the audience could easily miss.

“We open that scene up in our production,” Holman says. “We try to make [the action] more apparent.” In order to do that, she and Carrettin go so far as to move some music around, and they have made other modificatiosn to serve the drama.

“There is freedom in Baroque music,” Carrettin says. “We’re all trying to be practical musicians who can tell the story in an inspired way.”

Rather than aiming for a strict notion of historical authenticity, he talks about “Real Authentic Practice” (RAP). “What’s more interesting to me than citing a treatise is to look at the RAP of the time,” he says.

An immersive and enthralling journey through the Sonoran Desert on the U.S.-Mexico border, El Mar La Mar weaves together harrowing oral histories from the area with hand-processed 16mm images of flora, fauna and items left behind by travelers. Subjects speak of intense, mythic experiences in the desert. A sonically rich soundtrack adds to the eerie atmosphere as the call of birds and other nocturnal noises invisibly populate the austere landscape. Emerging from the ethos of Harvard’s Sensory Ethnography Lab, J.P. Sniadecki’s attentive documentary approach mixes perfectly with Joshua Bonnetta’s meditations on the materiality of film. Together, they’ve created an experience of the border region like nothing you’ve seen, heard or felt before.

Rocky Flats activist Dr. Daniel Ellsberg will give an interactive talk via Skype on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Unity of Boulder Spiritual Center (the only paid event of the weekend). Ellsberg was one of hundreds of protestors who were arrested for acts of civil disobedience, ultimately leading to the end of weapons production at the Rocky Flats plant in 1989.

Ellsberg went to battle with the U.S. government in 1971 by releasing the Pentagon Papers.

A Lesson in Deep Time for Birch Malotky

I stand atop history and geology, Mineral Mountain, El Dorado.

This continent continues its slow tilt towards the sun on the axis of season.

Beneath the melting snow the Earth is alive with the damp smell of vernal growth germinating.

Thrush and Warbler sing of their return.

The retreating snow reveals scat and tracks of Ungulates, life leaving its impression in its perpetual migration following sun and season.

I stand at the edge of a bare outcrop, rocks atop one another in perfect balance.

I close my eyes.

The world is alive in sound and silence.

The sun is warm on my lips.

The rocks beneath my feet give way, life out of balance.

I fall forward slowly, there is no Earth to hold me.

I fall into the valley until I am caught by dirt and rock far below. The impact is not subtle yet, I do not stop.

I continue to pass through the membrane of sand and soil.

My ears bleed gravity.

I am no longer me.

Cambrian explosion: life begins.

Metamorphic metamorphosis, loss of memory.

Long descent through Precambrian geology, the history of Earth alone onto itself.

Mind becomes molten.

Parts split apart, an annihilation of being, non-existence at the core of self.

Bright abyss, consume and shape me into solid centrifugal inner sphere; Coriolis force erupting magnetic field and gravity.

I move away from the center of mass.

Inner core, outer core, mesosphere mantle, asthenosphere, lithosphere.

I fall through fissures, an Igneous extrusive erupting at the bottom of the sea.

I am an island with a hot tempered tongue.

I vomit flame and ash.

The sky breathes me and I block out the sun.

My eyes fly open.

I catch my breath in ragged gasps atop the bare outcrop.

A dark cloud has passed before the sun.

It is going to snow.

The birds have flown away.

All is silent, waiting.

The dry smell of Winter still clings to my clothes.

I follow my footprints home, the impression of me already eroding.

I look back in time to see the rock fall.

Its violent journey rings in my ears until its final silence punctuates the last sentence on the last page in the book of life written in stone.

Return of the Denver Silent Film Festival by Michael J. Casey

his Friday, Marvel Studios releases Avengers: Infinity Wars, a massive movie ON THE BILL: Denver that will, reportedly, tie-up 10 years and Silent Film Festival. April 27–29, Alamo Drafthouse 18 installments worth of narrative threads Cinema — Sloans Lake, and character arcs in one ear-ringing, eye4255 W. Colfax Ave., ball-searing, two-hour-and-30-minute extravaDenver, denversilentfilmfest.org ganza. The geek may not inherit the Earth, but their seat on the box office throne is indisputable.

But that’s not what you are looking for. You’re looking for something that speaks softly (or not at all) and carries a big cinematic stick. Something that cuts through the clutter and addresses the heart in ways only a moving image can. You don’t need words, just faces. Well, lucky for you, the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema — Sloans Lake welcomes back the Denver Silent Film Festival (DSFF) April 27–29, with a lineup so good even the diehard Marvelites will want to drop in.

Co-founded by Howie Movshovitz and David Dynak in 2010, the DSFF has spent the better part of the past decade keeping the lights on for silent cinema.

And not just the heavy hitters, but also overlooked gems deserving of a wider audience. Case in point, 1916’s The Dumb Girl of Portici (April 29, 4:30 p.m.).

Directed by Lois Weber — one of the greatest filmmakers to ever be forgotten — and her husband, Phillips Smalley, Girl of Portici stars the famous ballerina, Anna Pavlova, as Fenella, a deaf, mute fisher-girl living under the Spanish occupation of Naples in the mid-17th century. It’s a crowd-pleaser and an early blockbuster, the first — and possibly the only blockbuster from the 20th century — helmed by a female director.

Rarities aren’t the only thing you’ll find at DSFF. Speedy (April 29, 7:30 p.m.), a comedy starring Harold Lloyd, is a delightful love letter to New York City; The Lodger (April 28, 7 p.m.) is the first film to truly display Alfred Hitchcock’s technical and emotional prowess; and The Passion of Joan of Arc (April 28, 10 a.m.) is quite possibly the greatest film ever made. Based on the court transcripts that condemned a 19-year-old to the stake, Passion features Renee Falconetti in a performance so powerful, so unforgettable, it is unlike any screen performance before or since.

Too heavy? How about some Walt Disney cartoons? On April 28, 1 p.m., renowned Disney scholar Russell Merritt receives DSFF’s David Shepard Career Achievement Award and will give a presentation of Disney’s early silent shorts — from Laugh-O-Grams to the Alice Comedies — as well as one infamously not so silent cartoon: Steamboat Willie, starring a whistling Mickey Mouse.

And so we come back to the mouse, the overlord of all those Marvel movies and more. Avengers will be playing at the Drafthouse all weekend, right alongside some of the best from cinema’s early days. Both carry with them a diehard fan base, which means you might spy someone in a Spider-Man onesie saddling up to the bar next to a Harold Lloyd look-alike, while Merritt discusses Julius, Oswald and Mickey with animation buffs in the corner. When it comes to the cinema, there’s room for everybody.

oulder’s own Bobby Stuckey and Lachlan Mackinnon Patterson have been showing up on James Beard Award and other prestigious lists for their efforts at Frasca for years. But last year they opened their latest venture, Tavernetta, near Union Station in Denver, to bring their brand of food, wine and service — all inspired by the region around Fruili, Italy — to a broader swath of people in a more casual setting. We’re happy to report it’s excellent. All the hallmarks and details you’ve come to expect at Frasca show up at Tavernetta, but with a smaller price tag. We tried plenty of dishes — the pastas are out of this world — but the maiale Milanese was a good representation of Tavernetta’s mission: to elevate great, traditional Northern Italian dishes. If you haven’t stopped by the shop in the Baseline and 28th Street complex, get in your car, or hop on the bus or your bike, and go right now. The food is dynamite. Take the samosa chat, for instance. It’s a simple dish that Tiffin’s makes otherworldly. It’s comprised of two samosas filled with curried potatoes, onions, green chili and cilantro, and smothered in a garbanzo bean and cilantro curry.

It’s robust and powerfully spicy, but you’ll be surprised at how quickly you can scarf it all down. Fresh red onions on top provide crunch and acidity. $9.95.

alking toward 13th Street on the first Saturday of the Boulder County Farmers Market, a palpable buzz filled the chilly air. We all missed the place, judging by the crowds cruising the food court and the limited early season offerings of arugula, beets, winter carrots, chives, greenhouse tomatoes, kale, pea shoots and spring onions.

It was great to greet folks I hadn’t seen since the final market day of 2017.

I overheard serious discussions about the best way to prepare sweet overwintered spinach, one of the season’s first greens.

Like professional baseball’s sacramental opening day of the season, the first Saturday market is a spring ritual infused with hope. However, standing in the middle of the hubbub I wondered if Boulder’s nationally acclaimed market would lose its glow if it was open yearround. If Boulder had a permanent foodcentric market hall we could visit on any given Saturday — or even every day of the week — would this Saturday in April still be a festive occasion?

I’ve been writing about the possibility of a year-round market in Boulder for several decades. I may write about it for several

more. There are recent proposals to create a market hall in the same block as the current market site in an existing or new building. It would be designed to complement the Aprilto-November Boulder County Farmers Market.

It seems like a no-brainer for Boulder to

Boulder doesn’t have any large old brick factories or a train terminal sitting around waiting to be rehabilitated into cool public gathering spaces. The impediments include winter weather, a short growing season, high real estate costs and finding funding sources and business partners. Also, Boulder has famously moved at a glacial pace in considering major new public projects over the years.

At that first market, I hung out with the farmers, chefs and folks who work the event. When I asked them about the viability of a year-round facility the reaction was mixed. One farmer wasn’t sure that he wanted to do it. “By the time we get to November, we need to take a break and focus on other projects and maintenance on the farm,” he said.

Another farmer suggested a monthly winter farmers market but there is not an attractive, affordable venue available in Boulder.

One market merchant said that a 12-month venue would be good for farmers and would encourage them to grow more winter greenhouse crops and produce preserved, canned and fermented foods using local crops.

although locals are notoriously active even when there is a foot of snow on the ground.

As I left the market that Saturday, it struck me that a year-round market hall in Boulder would mean we wouldn’t have to suffer the sense of loss that comes with the final Boulder County Farmers Market each season.

When you have “Championship” in your name you had better serve some wonderful barbecue. The smoky perfume certainly beckoned when I walked into GQue Championship Barbecue in Westminster. The meats are slowsmoked in-house over Missouri hickory every day. In true barbecue tradition, when they run out of smoked meats that’s it until the next day. I was impressed with the ribs because the meat didn’t fall off the bone — a sure sign of overcooked pork. Instead, the meat had some chew with an infused smokiness that wasn’t overbearing and woody. I was also happy to see the two sweet, smoky tomato-molasses barbecue sauces on the side and not on the meats, including some softly shredded pork.

The plate came with Texas toast, a pickle spear and house-pickled onions.

Boulder Wine Merchant owner and Master Sommelier Brett Zimmerman brings the world of fine wine to our fingertips

o succeed — it’s got to be from the moment you decide you’re going to do it until the end — you have to be relentless with your pursuit,” says Brett Zimmerman on the patio of his wine shop, Boulder Wine Merchant.

He’s talking about what it took to pass the series of courses required to become a Master Sommelier (MS). There are only 150 or so in the U.S., and though Zimmerman says the exams — which the Court of Master Sommeliers developed to test one’s ability in wine service,

knowledge and blind tasting — are challenging, it’s the years of adjusting one’s life that makes becoming an MS so difficult.

“You have to basically change your lifestyle,” Zimmerman says. “If you’re used to getting up and hanging out, reading the newspaper... no, no, no, you have to get up in the morning, you’ve got to devote X amount of time in the morning. When you’re done with your [work] shift, yeah, everyone’s going out to get a beer, you have to be like, ‘No, I’m going to go home and study for another couple hours.’ You have to do that not just for one week, you have to literally do it until you pass the exam. So seven, eight, nine, 10 years, however long it takes to do that.

You incorporate blind tasting for two, three, four days a week for 10 years. But you can’t just turn it on and off, you have to be dedicated.”

Zimmerman says the only thing that can sustain someone through the examination process is passion. If you’re not committed to passing the exam, and prepared to bounce back from failure, you simply won’t pass the last of four parts necessary to receive the MS

Zimmerman knew early that he wanted to pursue a career in food and wine, and with a few fortunate experiences and people dropping into his life, he’s built about as well-rounded a career in wine as one can. It started in Boulder (where, by the way, Zimmerman was born at the hospital across the street from Boulder Wine Merchant). He went to business school at the University of Colorado while working at Laudisio’s and Flagstaff House, two fine dining establishments that have staked their reputations on excellent service and great wine programs.

The allure of what Zimmerman calls “the theater of service” was enchanting, and appealed more to him than a pursuit in finance, which is what his friends and peers were undertaking.

“I kept finding myself being most passionate about food and wine and beverage service, so when I was getting close to graduating, basically ... all my buddies were going to work for Bear see ZIMMERMAN Page 48

Stearns, for JP Morgan, and I was like, ‘You know what, I’m putting myself to sleep just thinking about it.’”

Zimmerman chose passion over money. He chose to know wine through the pursuit of knowing everything about it, as opposed to making a high salary and dropping it on fancy bottles at top restaurants. If he had any doubts about his choice, he had plenty of opportunities to see the other side while working at Chicago’s Charlie Trotter’s, where guests flocked to experience the restaurant’s trendsetting wine program. He saw it working in Michael Mina’s high-end restaurants in San Francisco, where Zimmerman felt like he “was kind of swimming upstream while everyone was riding the wave of the dot-com boom.”

“I was one of the remaining people working in the restaurant business.

People were like, ‘What are you doing, man? You can make $5 million doing this, that or the other thing, and I was like, ‘That’s just not my thing,’” he says.

He saw it launching restaurants at the Bellagio, where high-stakes gamblers might spend up to $60,000 on wine on any given night.

And yet, he didn’t flinch. He came back to Boulder after his nationwide apprenticeship, and crossed paths with Bobby Stuckey, who was on the precipice of achieving his MS pin and opening Frasca. Tasting wines every Saturday with Stuckey solidified Zimmerman’s decision to take the two remaining MS courses.

He had amassed a varied and impressive catalog of experiences, was launching the restaurant Mateo with Chef Matthew Jansen, and had the invaluable resource of access to several Master Sommeliers — not only Stuckey, but Sally Mohr and Wayne Belding, from whom he would eventually buy Boulder Wine Merchant; Jay Fletcher in Aspen, and wine experts at The Little Nell, also in Aspen.

Mentorship, Zimmerman says, is a linchpin of the MS program; those who have gone before know the unique challenge the program presents.

“I would say we all share the common bond of sacrifice,” Zimmerman says of the MS community. “To get through the Master exam or Advanced exam, at some level you will experience failure.

You will. Period. Everybody has. Some more than others. But it’s humbling — that beat-down you take, the fact you just have to redouble your efforts time and time again and get back up on the saddle and be like, ‘You got to do this again.’”

Ultimately, Zimmerman has proven that he made the right choice to follow his passion. His hands are still in a number of arenas, including consulting for a beverage company, development of a canned cocktail, running the Boulder

Burgundy Festival (now in its eighth year) and, of course, operating Boulder Wine Merchant. Zimmerman knew that simply passing the MS exam was useless, both personally and for the wine-drinking community, if he didn’t utilize the information he had gathered.

“You don’t just get through the [MS] exam, it’s not like the draft, like, ‘OK, I’m going to sign this $500 million contract.

Like any industry, you’re only useful if you’re a good employee. If you have all this knowledge and you pass the exam but you’re a train wreck of an employee, you’re going to be hard to employ,” he says.

That’s an attitude we in Boulder County benefit from. To have access to the knowledge of an MS via Boulder Wine Merchant, without the barrier to entry that a fine dining establishment possesses, is a rarity — Zimmerman estimates only five or six other wine shops in the country are operated by Master Sommeliers. But Zimmerman says he gets more out of it himself because he’s able to share the world of wine with a much more diverse community.

“When it’s all said and done, the connection to the community is what’s so important. When I bought this store, I didn’t want to sit in back and run an online store, grabbing warehouse space in East Boulder and sitting behind a computer,” he says.

Zimmerman says people come into the shop often to see him, and cull information and buying tips, just as they would ask for Stuckey or any other MS in a restaurant. But providing wine at various price points, from small producers all over the world, is where Zimmerman says the value of his store is most evident.

“Anybody can spend $50 on a bottle of wine and have it be good. The reality is we spend most of our time going through and kissing a lot of frogs before finding the princes when it comes to that under-$10, under-$15 category on the shelf,” he says.

But that effort has been worth it; to be able to go in and grab a monthly special bottle of wine from an artisan producer for under $10 that’s been vetted by an MS is spectacular. Zimmerman says he tastes up to 100 wines a day to curate his store. It also helps him curate his own wine cellar, which he says has grown so big, he’s “got a problem.”

The real problem, though, might be deciding what to pull out and drink.

We’ve got Zimmerman, but where does he turn when he needs some inspiration?

“I think wine drinking for me is kind of like a wardrobe,” he says. “Take a look outside and decide how you’re feeling, what are you cooking, what’s the weather like, what’s the time of year, those kinds of things make the decision easier.”

Finish Longmont Restaurant Week trolley-style by Michael J. Casey

e’ve all been there: It’s Saturday, and all you want to do is get out of the house, head over to your trusty watering hole and catch up with a few friends. But you just read about a brand new beer release, something dry-hopped no doubt, at another brewery across town. And your plus-one also wants to go out, but what they’re thirsting for is a pint of cider, possibly even a cocktail. What is an intrepid drinker to do?

In Longmont, the answer is simple: Brewhop Trolley. Running Saturdays and Sundays, Brewhop shuttles birthday parties, bachelor and bachelorette soirées, and the single drinker from one Longmont brewery/cidery/distillery to the next — 13 in all — safely and soundly. Each stop is no more than a minute or two, just long enough for departures and arrivals, before the Brewhop rolls on to the next watering hole. A full loop takes roughly an hour.

Ready to go? Start at 300 Suns Brewing, where you can procure a lunch pail of samples and decide on which stops are a must and which can be skipped. Though the trolley runs from 12-9 p.m., trying to go the distance is ill-advisable. As you board the Brewhop and settle into the trolley’s wooden benches, remember to pace yourself.

Next up is Wibby Brewing, where lager reigns supreme. Don’t skip its French spring ale, a collaboration with Station 26, M-A-R-S, before rolling on to Pumphouse Brewery/Red Zone, followed by Longs Peak Pub & Brewery. Both offer plenty to quaff but, more importantly, Wibby serves food, which you will need from here on out.

Next up is a double drop: Longtucky Spirits and St. Vrain Cidery. Cocktails and cider tend to get short shrift in a scene densely populated with breweries, but neither should be overlooked. At Longtucky — new to the scene but soon to be a staple — try the Salty Dog: fresh and botanical gin mixed with creamy pink grapefruit juice served in a rocks glass rimmed with kosher salt. At St. Vrain, dive into Dry Ginger (divine) and the Key Lime (a king amongst royalty).

The Brewhop rolls on: Shoes & Brews, where you can pick up some running shoes to help you work off the calories you’re packing on; Grossen Bart Brewery, with every beer named after a facial hairstyle; Bootstrap Brewing, where the Chillax Pineapple Gold is a must; and Longmont’s perennial staple, Left Hand Brewing.

You’ll find more spirits at Anvil Distillery (note, it’s closed Sundays), house blends at Skeye Brewing, a much-needed coffee beer at Oskar Blues Tasty Weasel Tap Room, and a wedding beer (#Caychel, a hoppy wheat) at Open Door Brewing before heading back to 300 Suns. Yes, you can still get a beer, should you need another, but a panini and a glass of water might be preferable.

URANUS SMELLS LIKE ROTTEN EGGS Scientists at Oxford University published research this week that detailed how Uranus smells like rotten eggs, due to the presence of hydrogen sulfide in the atmosphere.

The lead scientist on the project was reportedly hesitant to publish the findings that Uranus smells like rotten eggs because he’d given his entire life to study the distant planet’s atmosphere, dropping hundreds of thousands of dollars and countless hours on rigorous study, eschewing any semblance of a social life to the point that he no longer believes he is capable of loving anyone, not even his parents, who, like everyone else, laughed at him for having the audacity to believe he could excel in astrophysics and mathematics when he couldn’t even manage a B in elementary school math.

After all the years of abuse and belittlement, as people close to him didn’t believe in his ability, and laughed at his ridiculous pursuit to find some arcane detail about something so far removed from earth, to come out and say Uranus smells like rotten eggs is like a slap in the face.

He told our therapist that every time I hooked up with someone, he was retraumatized because it reminded him of the time I broke up with him for six months 20 years ago. I agreed to a monogamous relationship, and I’ve gone a year without hooking up with anyone else. He seemed genuinely relieved and said he felt more secure. But almost immediately, he began talking about how he wanted to hook up with others. I’m at a loss. I feel tremendous guilt for

—Gay Marriage Having Crisis Dear GMHC: I’ve written about a few gay couples — and a few straight ones — where one half gets to hook up with others while the other half doesn’t. But they were cuckold couples, GMHC, and the half who didn’t “get to” hook up with others didn’t want to hook up with others. T

here’s just something about being on your feet all day and dealing with insufferable people who lie about having trendy food allergies that makes servers want to get stoned. According to a recent study that surveyed 10,000 working adults in Colorado between 2014-15, just over 30 percent of food service and hotel employees admitted to current marijuana use, which is more than any other industry in the state.

If you ever worked in a restaurant, this should come as no surprise. If you’ve somehow managed to avoid the hospitality industry your entire life, I’m going to fill you in on why no one wants to be sober.

When I moved to Boulder from Maryland in 2012, I didn’t know anyone. After dropping out of grad school a couple months later, I did what every young person who has no idea how life works does: wait tables. I ended up working at a popular brewery in town and quickly adjusted to a world of aggressive drinking, chain smoking and never having to buy groceries again.

Everyone from the teenage hostess to the general manager was smoking weed at some point before, during or after their shift. On more than one occasion, even the wealthy owner would show up unannounced and start cleaning random tables because he was stoned and thought it was funny to introduce himself to customers as the bus boy (it was).

The reality of server life, or at least in my experience, is that it typically involves a fast-paced work environment where you’re surrounded by other young, conventionally attractive people who like to party. The stress and drama that comes with it is just part of business, but that’s not the only reason why servers are turning to cannabis.

For starters, the study mentions that people ages 18-25 smoke the most weed, which is also the age group most likely to work in a restaurant. Also, getting paid in tips means that you always have a ton of cash at your disposal. Dealing with so much paper

money felt like a constant hole burning in my wallet because if it wasn’t deposited in my bank account, I could justify it as “extra” to spend on whatever I wanted. And it just so happened that cash was the only form of payment accepted by most dispensaries at the time, making it a simple transaction.

Then consider that servers are on the complete opposite schedule of everyone else in the world. When most people are heading home from the office, servers are just going in. And when most people are sound asleep, they are scrubbing down a bar. Naturally, I would wake up around noon and, because I didn’t have to deal with emails, work or anything that required even a minimal amount of cognitive functioning when I wasn’t on the clock, I could wake and bake pretty much every day.

Then there’s the whole culture of mild drug use as a way to connect with your coworkers. Everyday you all have to deal with an endless amount of commands, rude people and poor tippers. There’s a lot of camaraderie that happens when you earn close to nothing compared to the amount of work that you do and the patience you have to maintain. It’s that labor-intensive job that necessitates breaks.

And there’s no better excuse for a break than going out for a quick smoke. After a tough shift,

you’re gonna want to bond with your coworkers over a spliff and do your best impersonation of the snob who complained because they only wanted ONE slice of lemon in their water and NO ice.

GOD. Most of the people working in the service industry are just trying to get by. When I was doing it, I was living month to month and had no idea what kind of impact I wanted to make on the world. Weed helped me stay chill and not stress myself to the point of overthinking everything I was doing wrong in life.

Twenty-eight percent of people in those fields say they currently smoke weed.

In all other professions surveyed, fewer than 6 percent of workers said they’d recently used marijuana. The employees least likely to use marijuana are those working in education, public administration; mining, oil and gas; and health care, basically anywhere there’s a possibility of getting drug tested or where there are bigger consequences than being reprimanded for accidentally giving someone regular Coke instead of diet.

Evolve or die

W

ow! I haven’t been this exhilarated by anything involving pot since the night in 1989 when Leland (a former editor and pot writer at Boulder Weekly) and I got stoned and watched the Berlin Wall come down.

That’s because another wall is collapsing

— the metaphorical one those of us advocating for marijuana legalization have been banging our heads against for the last 50 years.

Major cracks have been appearing in it for some time now: The legalization of recreational marijuana in Colorado and eight other states, the legalization of medical marijuana in 30 states, polls showing 61 percent support among the American people for ending the war on pot, and so on.

But the changes in the last few weeks feel like a tipping point.

Here’s a short run-down on what’s happened this month, and why it matters: The evolution of John Boehner. On April 11, former Republican House Speaker

John Boehner announced he had joined the board of directors of Acreage Holdings, a company that grows medical marijuana in 11 states. Back in 2011, Boehner told a reporter for Bloomberg News that he was “unalterably opposed” to legalizing marijuana. Now he says his thinking has “evolved.”

“I’m joining the board of Acreage Holdings because my thinking on cannabis has evolved,” he said. “I’m convinced descheduling the drug is needed so we can do research, help our veterans and reverse the opioid epidemic ravaging our communities.”

The evolution of Chuck Schumer. On 4/20, non-coincidentally, New York’s senior Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer also announced that his views on pot had “evolved,” and that he would introduce legislation to “decriminalize” marijuana. While the bill has yet to be drafted, reports are that he’s leaning toward removing marijuana entirely from the Controlled Substances Act, which currently lists it as a Schedule I Controlled Substance along with heroin. Delisting would allow marijuana to be treated like alcohol under federal law and would effectively allow states to legalize marijuana if they choose to without federal interference.

The Gardner-Trump deal. Schumer’s move may have been prompted in part by an announcement by Colorado Republican Senator Cory Gardner that he had reached a deal with President Trump, under which the Trump administration would refrain from interfering with state marijuana legalization schemes in return for Gardner releasing his hold orders on a number of Trump Department of Justice appointees.

What’s more, Gardner got a promise from Trump for support of “federalism-based” legislation to allow states to decide how they

want to regulate pot without federal interference, which sounds a lot like what Schumer is proposing.

Nixon goes to pot. Cynthia Nixon, that is.

The Sex and the City actress is running in the New York state Democratic gubernatorial primary against incumbent Governor Andrew Cuomo, who’s been an opponent of legalization. Nixon has made marijuana legalization the main issue in her campaign. Her candidacy is definitely a long-shot, but the marijuana issue seems to be resonating for her.

The Wolverine Republican rethink.

Word out of Michigan is that the state’s marijuana legalization initiative will formally be placed on the state’s November ballot next week — and that this is causing Republican members of the state legislature to consider passing the initiative before the voters get a shot at it. Polling shows the measure has 61 percent support, and GOP legislators think if it is on the ballot it will boost the turnout of young, Democratic-leaning voters. So the idea is to pass the initiative as a state law and take it out of the November election.

What should we make of all this? First, marijuana legalization is going to be a big issue in the 2018 elections. Democrats are going to run on it hard, and Republicans are waking up to the fact that if they don’t get on board they could start losing close elections, and maybe control of the House of Representatives. As Charlie Darwin might say, evolve or die.

Second, the real importance of having some political heavies like Schumer and Boehner and even Trump signing off on legalization is that they are in effect giving more timid members of their parties permission to “evolve” on the issue. And that is what could really cause the wall to come tumbling down.
