Pot is dangerous

In the April 12 edition of the Boulder Weekly, the cover story was entitled, “Nipping 4/20 in the bud.” A week later, the Boulder Weekly published [a letter to the editor] written by Tristan Gulliford.

More than anything, the editorial sparked my desire to reflect on the issue because of some of the absurd claims.

The real issue is not 4/20. It is not how to control 4/20. Nor is it about the reputation of CU. Actually, there was a program called Marijuana USA on CNBC tonight and the main focus was Colorado. If you want to talk about reputation! This is about addiction and how denial is at work. No one is addressing the truth. The truth is that pot is addictive and ruins lives.

Physiologically, pot may not be as addictive as heroin, meth or cocaine. Pot does not change the nervous system like these other drugs, but it is psychologically

addictive. And by the nature of addiction, that leads to not being able to stop.

Tell those folks lighting up on 4/20 to stop for a year. It ain’t gonna happen.

They are psychologically dependent on it. And if they were to stop you will find that the user’s anxiety will soar, mood will suffer and other drug use will increase.

I can tell you from professional and personal experience this substance ruins lives. The rooms of Marijuana Anonymous are growing every year with younger and younger people. The need for this 12-step program grew out of the reality that weed is not harmless. Go to a few meetings and listen to the stories.

Almost agreed with Danish

I thought for once I could agree with Paul Danish on “The folly of compulsory national service” (Danish Plan, April 5).

But, no. Although Danish gets the right answer, it’s for all the wrong reasons!

He natters on about economic and social costs, what to do with the conscriptees, etc. Not a word about the fact that it’s unconstitutional! Thirteenth Amendment: Involuntary servitude is prohibited. This “national service” is not a draft and not to defend the nation; it’s a cockamamie social engineering experiment, using people’s lives as the variables.

It violates the most basic law of our land.

Nor does Danish examine the moral travesty of stealing several years — the most precious and productive adult years — from every young American.

Even if it weren’t unconstitutional, it would be Just Plain Wrong. The way to get young Americans to “serve” and to do right, for themselves and for their country, is to stand back and let them do it! They have the energy and the ideals; they’ve not yet been dragged down by corruption, compromise or just plain getting old-and-tired.

It’s disheartening that so many of us OFs haven’t learned that.

ity of Boulder workers have disturbed a possible gravesite just outside of Valmont Cemetery.

The city has begun remediation of its contaminated Valmont Butte property and has hired an archeologist and tribal monitor to keep tabs on possible unearthing of unmarked graves during soil excavation.

Cmdr. Rick Brough of the Boulder County Sheriff ’s Office said that a deputy was dispatched to the cemetery April 25 on a report of a gravesite being disturbed. He confirmed that the circle of rocks surrounding the potential grave had been removed, but no excavation had been done. The deputy marked the area off with tape, according to Brough, and the matter falls under jurisdiction of the sheriff ’s office and possibly the coroner, since the city open space land is in unincorporated Boulder County.

He said that normally, when a grave is discovered, the sheriff ’s office and coroner are notified, but in this case, a concerned citizen affiliated with the cemetery — not the city or its consultants — alerted law enforcement.

The matter is under investigation, Brough said. “Everything’s on hold right now until we figure out what’s going on,” he explained.

City officials issued a written statement: “The city found a rock formation about a month ago on the Valmont

Butte site. At that time, the contracted archeologist and the Native American monitor were notified to evaluate whether it was an artifact; this rock formation was not present on the site previously. Both experts verified that it was not an historic artifact and, in fact, was recently placed. The rock formation was removed by the archeologist and Native American monitor on Monday from the site. The Sheriff ’s Office received a report of a grave and is investigating to determine if it is a recent grave or a mock representation.”

Carol Affleck of the Valmont School District #4 Cemetery Association told Boulder Weekly she was upset by the discovery, especially since the association was given assurances that there would be a 50-foot buffer between remediation and the cemetery, and since the gravesite was not inside the city’s fence demarcating the remediation area. She added that just because the marker may have appeared relatively new doesn’t mean it couldn’t have been a recent upgrade to an old gravesite.

“While the city says the marker was small and might have been a pet, there are large burials in the cemetery with very small markers,” Affleck said. “They didn’t even call us to tell us they were doing it. … Do you think anybody else would do this next to Columbia Cemetery?”

First Amendment — 1 CU administration — 0 Commentary and photos by Joel Dyer

A

dministrators at CU are like those people who go to Vegas, lose a bunch of money, come back home and tell everyone who will listen that they really won, and then either refuse to admit, or are honestly incapable of grasping, that they have a serious problem.

For more than 20 years, the annual 4/20 event on the CU campus came and went pretty much without incident. There is really no reason to think that this year would have been any different had those who run the University not decided to make it different, but they did, and it was.

As a result of the administration’s failed attempt to stop the 4/20 protest, it has embarrassed itself along with the institution. Thanks to the misguided efforts of its leaders, the University of Colorado and all of us in the city of Boulder received far more local and national press coverage concerning the police-state they created to deny the free speech and peaceful assembly of students and others than had ever resulted before due to the 4/20 gathering.

Considering that “negative publicity” was one of the justifications given by administrators for their decision to basically suspend the First Amendment, I’d say their plan backfired.

This isn’t a small thing. These people closed our publicly funded campus to all outsiders for the first time ever. Not even during the impassioned protests of the Vietnam War — when

the very real possibility of violence existed — did anyone dare commit such an act to throttle First Amendment rights. And if you don’t think that this year’s 4/20 event qualified as a protest worthy of First Amendment protection, then I would ask that you look more closely at these photos. In its effort to quash what it perceived as nothing more than a 4/20 party, those who run the campus succeeded only in transforming the event into a far more powerful political rally.

At this year’s 4/20 protest, I had the opportunity to observe as a passionate young man explained to the police at Norlin Quad why he wanted them to step aside and let him and his fellow protestors pass. He said it was his school, and he believed that he had the Constitutional right to express his views on the grass of his own university where he paid tuition. When his request was rejected, he then turned to the crowd and encouraged them to remain peaceable as he led them in political chants.

It was at that point that the policeman a few inches in front of me leaned over to another officer and quietly inferred that he thought he should arrest the young man for inciting a riot.

Fortunately, before such a foolish act on the part of the police could occur — I say foolish because this is exactly how actual riots explode from otherwise peaceful gatherings — that same young man encouraged the crowd to peacefully leave the area in order to avoid conflict. He then led the crowd toward a new, police-free piece of grass at the quad south of the Duane physics building, where this year’s 4/20 protest finally took place despite all the planning, military-like force and hundreds of thousands of dollars spent by CU in its failed effort to stop it.

Did I mention that this guy the cops wanted to arrest — the same young fellow who, from where I was standing, should be credited with having prevented what could have become an ugly scene — doesn’t even smoke pot? Not that it matters when it comes to the First Amendment.

ing journalists, including myself, who were unwilling to apply for a special bright orange press pass the size of a bullet proof vest and issued by the very administration on whose actions we were reporting, were also told to stay away and that we could not enter the campus. For the 25 years I have been working as a journalist, a valid Colorado press pass was always good enough for a breaking story on public property.

I realize that had I been willing to request a special media pass from the powers that be at CU, it would have been granted to me, but that isn’t the issue. What if I had been legally on campus because I was wearing my administration-issued, orange-jump-suit of a pass? Would those same two cops have had that same candid conversation about arresting that young man right under my nose if they knew I was a reporter? I don’t think so. And that’s the point.

This administration believes it has the right to control the message, even the message of the media.

We need to ask ourselves, is this shred-the-First-Amendment lesson really what we want University students to be learning?

Because it is what they are learning. Can you imagine another time in CU’s storied history — this is, after all, the university built around the Dalton Trumbo free speech fountain — that the student

nn Miller and her husband Douglas used to live on Valmont Road — directly across the street from the primary tailings pond dike dam at Valmont Butte that is suspected of being a pathway for the contamination that ended up in the wells north of Valmont Road over the years.

Despite claims by various government officials that contamination has never spread from Valmont Butte to adjacent properties, Ann Miller and other nearby residents have a different story.

But her problems over the 33 years that she lived in the shadow of Valmont Butte were not limited to her contaminated well water. In the 1960s, she reports that a white dust from the uncapped tailings pond would descend on her front yard.

“If the wind blew just right, it would just come down like a fog,” Miller says. “We kept complaining about it to the county. … It was just a really, really fine white powder. And it just got over everything.”

She and her husband would simply deal with the problem by turning on their extensive sprinkler system fed by a nearby ditch, and they’d spray the dust away.

Miller still wonders if that dust had something to do with the fact that their dog, a Weimaraner, got a brain tumor and died.

“Well, there’s, I think, a strong possibility, but there wouldn’t be any way that I could prove that, I don’t think,” she says.

Then there was the water from her family’s drinking well. In the summer, Miller recalls, she and her husband would take samples of their drinking water and have it tested by the county health department.

“It was considered unfit to drink,” Miller says. “It had an awful lot of minerals in it. We took a sample of it up to [Colorado State University], and had it tested up there. … They broke it down as to what was in it. It was minerals a foot long. I took it to my doctor and

had him look at it, and he said, ‘Well, you shouldn’t ever have to take any laxatives.’ It had a lot of manganese.”

Miller says other chemicals that their water tested positive for included arsenic and lead. And there is no safe level of lead in drinking water, according to the EPA. But the Millers kept drinking the water, she says, because her husband would treat the contamination — with good old Clorox.

“He’d pour a gallon of it down in the well, and then we’d turn all the taps on in the house, so we could smell the Clorox, so we knew it was in all the pipes, that it had come all the way through.”

Once the Clorox was in all the pipes, they would turn off the faucets and bring in bottled water for a couple of days, Miller says.

“After it had sat in the pipes for awhile, then we just flushed the pipes, just ran the water through them, and through them, and through them, to get the Clorox out of it,” she explains.

“That worked, as far as making our water good enough to drink.”

In response to a question about whether there had been any negative health effects from the Valmont property, she acknowledges that her husband died in 1990 due to an auto-immune disease.

“I don’t think so, you know, it’s hard to tell,” Miller says. “My husband had emphysema, but I would have no way of knowing that it came from there.

And he also had trouble with platelets, he had an immune system problem that destroyed his platelets. … I suppose it could have been caused by that, but there’d be no way of ever proving that.”

She sold the property in 1994 and now lives in Louisville.

Regardless of whether the Miller family’s health problems were caused by contamination from Valmont Butte, they are not alone in their complaints.

A Feb. 5, 2007, affadavit signed by the Millers’ neighbors, Joy Sawhill Keeter and George E. Sawhill, states that the family’s grandparents moved to

news 6379 Valmont Road in 1901, and that in about 1945, “the domestic water well located ten feet from the kitchen of the house, which was built in the 1890s, was contaminated.

“Our parents, George and Ruth Sawhill, had the water tested and it came back positive for contamination.

General Chemical [which became Allied and then Honeywell] was contacted, they took responsibility and agreed to dig a new well approximately 200 feet from the house. The reason for the contamination was water leaching (not leaking or flooding) from the tailings pond of the General Chemical Mill to our house well.

“The dike directly south of 6379 Valmont Road, that spans the gap between the Butte formations, is comprised entirely of tailings being deposited during process of milling ore. … Our concern is the integrity of the dike and the possibility of further contamination of our ground water.”

And in an Aug. 23, 1985, letter to the Mined Land Reclamation Board, two operators of a Valmont group home objected to plans by the Varra Construction Company to remove dirt from Valmont Butte for a roadbed.

“We are concerned that breaking further into the dike will release more radioactive tailings and further contaminate our water supply,” wrote Guru Nam Kaur Khalsa and Sadhana Singh Khalsa of Khalsa Residential Care.

“Our water contains too much alpha radiation to be safe for drinking, so we must buy or haul our drinking water for 15 people.”

Guru Nam Kaur Khalsa told the Longmont Times-Call in a Sept. 19, 1985, article, “We don’t drink the water here at all. The radioactivity is probably due to those tailings.”

According to that story, county sanitarian Eric Steinhaus confirmed the presence of low-level radioactivity in the Khalsa wells, but said its source was unknown.

Sound familiar?

An Oct. 22, 1985, article in the Times-Call quotes Boulder County environmental health officer George Mathews as saying that radiation levels in wells north of the butte along Valmont Road are “more than you would expect, but not astronomical.”

According to the same story, records at the county health department showed that the Miller well and another well at 6379 Valmont Road “were positive in tests for radium, uranium and alpha and beta radioactivity in April.”

Finally, a Dec. 10, 2004, letter that was reviewed by a geologist and written by several concerned residents — Boulder Weekly

including members of Rural Historic Valmont, a member of the Valmont cemetery association, a local organic farmer and a Native American who served as caretaker at Valmont Butte — identifies at least 17 incidents of cancer in the immediate area north of the dike dam. The veracity of their claims has not been confirmed, but historical records support the assertion that contamination has spread from the Valmont property.

From the late 1960s to the early

1980s, county and state health departments monitored the wells north of Valmont Butte in conjunction with testing the contamination at the primary tailings pond pump and other areas located on the Allied Chemical property. They reported their findings on the water wells north of the primary tailings pond and the Allied locations in a single document presented to the company each year.

These water-testing documents make it clear that in the past, the same

government entities that now state emphatically there is no chance a pathway from the primary tailings pond to the aquifer north of the dike dam can exist, were once quite sure that such a pathway did exist.

And yet these officials continue to insist that it couldn’t happen again in the future.

The spread of that misinformation may prove to be as toxic as the contamination itself.

government would have been willing to spend $150,000 to try and dissuade their fellow students from gathering together peaceably and speaking their minds on an important issue of the day? And worse, while spending that money in part to create a Wyclef Jean concert to lure students away from the protest, members of student government actually wrote into the performer’s contract which words he was forbidden to say, another first for CU, contractual censorship of a performing artist. What’s next, firing professors for using certain words or expressing certain political views? Oh, wait, CU already has a reputation for doing that. Never mind.

As first reported by Boulder Weekly, according to the contract Wyclef Jean was forbidden to speak of marijuana or 4/20. To do so, per the contract, would constitute a breach, which presumably would cost the integrity-challenged singer his 80-grand payday. In a last pathetic effort to find someone to not talk about pot with, Wyclef sent his brother to the 4/20 protest with a megaphone to try and find out why “no one was at Wyclef ’s concert.” What a waste of $150,000.

But the important question here is, where did these supposed student leaders get such a hairbrained, anti-Trumboesque idea? There’s an easy answer. These students were simply modeling the behavior of their school’s administration. And it didn’t stop there. Other equally mis-mentored students encouraged their peers who wanted to show solidarity against those who desired the right to participate in a 4/20 protest to do so by wearing suits and ties on that day. I’m not joking.

These are college students on the CU campus who believe, because they have been taught to believe, that the opposite of someone who wants to speak their mind on a political issue, is someone wearing a suit. I can only imagine that this is the result of having an institution of higher learning led by an oil man and other “businesspersons” who have made it clear that they are willing to use the threat of force to trample any and all Constitutional rights, including those possessed by tuition-paying students whose political positions and/or actions are deemed to be ill-suited to corporate fundraising.

They have created an environment in which our leaders of tomorrow believe that the censorship of those with whom they disagree is an acceptable tool of power. It should send a shiver down the spine of everyone, particularly CU alumni.

very heart of our community did not rise from its McCarthy-era grave overnight. It has been a slow process that has led us back to this point where blatant suppression of our rights is not only tolerated, but even held high as a desirable aspiration for our young people.

There’s no denying it, we live in a post-9/11 world where trading our rights for the perception of safety has become commonplace. A little racial profiling, a few unwarranted wire taps here and there, a couple of snapshots of protest leaders or pesky environmentalists put into a file, just in case. It’s understandable as long as it’s for the public good, right?

There is also no denying that today’s public universities get far more of their money from corporations than from our tax dollars. This reality makes trading other people’s rights to ensure this flow of funding remains steady is paramount for those whose healthy incomes depend on it. But no one in the CU administration would ever admit as much. So the excuse given for sending a massive police force to extinguish a protest over the morality and practicality of current marijuana laws is that it is necessitated by the need to protect CU’s “reputation,” and the perceived value of the institution’s diplomas. The worst part about this invented diploma smokescreen is that some of the students, including those in campus government, have actually swallowed the whole thing hook, line and sinker.

The CU of today is a corporatefunded institution where those who speak their mind will not be tolerated unless their message is one acceptable to people who write big checks.

The Adrienne Andersons, Ward Churchills and Phil Mitchells are no longer protected by the higher calling of the university experience, the calling where students’ minds are opened by

new ideas and their worldviews broadened by exposure to myriad points of view. CU has spit these teachers and thinkers and others like them out in recent years, all in the name of protecting CU’s reputation. But what does this even mean? What is all this business about reputations and diploma values?

Berkeley has a particular reputation, and its students are highly sought after.

NYU has its reputation, and seems to be doing just fine. And yes, CU too has a particular reputation, and despite the current leadership’s statements to the contrary, it’s not one of which to be ashamed.

CU has always been viewed as a free-spirited place. It has been a university where individualism is cherished and where fun that didn’t hurt anyone is tolerated. It has been a place that historically has been willing to speak its mind on all issues of the day. CU students have at times hated war, adamantly opposed alphabet organizations like the CIA and FBI, fought against military recruiting on campus and generally shown a healthy skepticism toward politicians whose idea of progress is forcing us all back into an episode of Father Knows Best.

But above all, as symbolized by the Dalton Trumbo fountain at the center of the square that has been officially dedicated as a free-speech zone, CU has been a caldron of ideas boiling in free expression, no matter how disagreeable or far from the mainstream they may be. Right or left, pro or con, the First Amendment was at the center of CU’s reputation.

So you see, CU does have a reputation. The problem is that the school’s real image isn’t anything like this new University of Control version that the current folks in charge are rolling out with the help of a military-style security force. The truth is, in their effort to save a CU reputation that has never existed, administrators are destroying

and degrading the very real CU reputation that has always made it great.

The politically active students who attended or who wanted to attend 4/20 but were threatened into submission aren’t the problem. I couldn’t help but notice that several of the students who were out in front of the protest on 4/20 were also on or near the stage during President Obama’s visit to CU this week. They are our future leaders, thank goodness.

The problem is this group of university leaders and city council (with the exception of Lisa Morzel and Macon Cowles), which voted to support this military-style action to snuff out political dissent. The problem is every member of the Boulder community who has shown themselves willing to endorse a police action against people who would peacefully assemble to express their political views. How, in the city of Boulder, can we sit passively by and watch as CU administrators use the threat of physical violence, arrest, jail time and even a student’s future ability to be employed and support a family as the weapons to stomp out the opinions of those with whom administrators disagree, or more accurately, believe will hurt the school’s bottom line.

As a matter of full disclosure, I don’t smoke pot. This isn’t some exercise in pushing my hidden personal agenda. I’m just trying to stop this train because I have lived long enough to know that the bridge ahead is out.

No good can come from the current direction this university is heading. If CU administrators are willing to use this kind of money and strong-armed tactics to stop something as innocent and peaceful as 4/20, what on Earth will they do when a truly volatile issue erupts on the scene? I can only hope that they will give me their permission to report on it.

Congressman Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) meditates for 45 minutes a day and says he thinks meditation needs to become the new American pastime.

He started a serious practice of meditation and mindfulness in November 2008, six years after he was elected to office, and says it’s made a difference in the work he’s been able to do in Congress. He’s less stressed, has more insight, more kindness and is better able to listen to his fellow representatives.

Even those whose views he disagrees with.

The congressman is bringing that message to Boulder on April 30 for a talk at Naropa University.

“We have big differences in the country, but I think we can all deal with it without being unkind to the other side,” Ryan says. And while it might help mend the cross-aisle talks, it wasn’t his fellow members of Congress he had in mind when he wrote the book A Mindful Nation. He wrote it for his constituents, whom he says he has been watching suffer during his 12 years in office under the strains of a difficult economy, lack of health care and other issues. Ryan says his belief is that mainstreaming the practice of meditation could “lead to a real renaissance in America.”

YVES SAINT LAURENT RETROSPECTIVE COMES TO LIFE WITH PERFUME PAIRING

A

rtwork in museums is usually meant to be seen and not touched, not tasted and not smelled.

But the Denver Art Museum is partnering with local perfumer Dawn Spencer Hurwitz to organize an event that turns that notion on its head. On May 1, Hurwitz will lead a tour through Yves Saint Laurent: The Retrospective, an exhibit of 200 garments that reviews 40 years of the famous design house, with six perfumes she created for the occasion. Her perfumes play with the historic scents of the 20th century, converse with Saint Laurent’s work, and help bring the women who wore these clothes to life.

“When you experience multiple senses at the same time or you stimulate them, it’s sort of exponential,” Hurwitz says. “It’s not one plus one equals two, it’s, ‘Wow, that’s a five for me, I experience that in a whole new way, I imagine a woman wearing that dress, I can almost see her because I can smell her.’”

“To look at these beautifully constructed, incredible fabrics and look at these wonderful garments and imagining who’s wearing it and where they might wear it and then when you add what they might smell like, it’s one step closer to being able to touch it,” Hurwitz says, “even if you can’t.”

Saint Laurent launched into the Paris haute couture scene at the age of 21, inheriting Christian Dior’s design house after his death at age 58. From his first collection for the Dior house, A. Guirkinger released in 1958, Saint Laurent challenged the rules of fashion and the relationship haute couture had with everyday life. In his first line, he shucked the corseted waistlines, creating “La Trapeze,” a white, silversequined dress that hangs freely from the shoulders.

“It’s so important because it liberates the body of the woman,” says Florence Müller, chief curator of the retrospective. That idea of mobility foreshadowed the women’s liberation movement.

Hurwitz starts her tour there, with the light and airy “Ligne Trapeze,” a cool oris-based (root of the iris plant) aldehydic with violet undertones. That kind of scent would have been popular from the ’40s to the mid-’50s, says Hurwitz, who’s an amateur perfume historian and has the beginnings of a perfume museum in the back of her studio. Aldehydics are “very 20th-century molecules,” she says, and were the signature of Chanel No. 5.

“This is sort of like bridging the French aesthetic of Dior and starting to introduce a new quality to it, a more 18 April 26, 2012

youthful quality that would represent YSL himself,” Hurwitz says. “It’s going to be fun to do this pairing to also explain to all the people who come to the event not only the background aesthetic of perfume at the time and place, but also specifically how it relates to YSL, and where he is in his career, and the collection and even imagining wearing this perfume with those fashions.”

Saint Laurent took his inspiration from everywhere — including the street, to the abhorrence of some of the loyal Dior patrons. He incorporated black leather when black leather was for people on the street who resembled characters in Grease, and the Dior clientele was far more Audrey Hepburn.

“It was very strange at Dior to see inspiration taken from the street,” Müller says. “Haute couture was a dictatorship. Yves Saint Laurent made proposals and let women make a choice and infuse their own personality.”

Hurwitz created “Beat Look,” a scent for the new wave French aesthetic in the ’60s, one of the only times American culture had an impact on French culture. The perfume is still an aldehydic, but with some green scents, an American influence.

Mondrian Saint Laurent opened his own tribute cocktail house in 1962, immediately chargdress, 1965 ing into a line of clothing that, by embracing the gender revolution underway through the ’60s, changed the female wardrobe and, with it, the feminine identity.

He acquired clients who came for what he had to offer: fashions that were daring and brave and that embraced the feminist movement.

That list included actress Lauren Bacall, fellow fashion designer Diane Vreeland, Princess Grace of Monaco, French actress Catherine Deneuve, and fashion icon Betty Catroux, who was his longtime muse.

Although those designs are impossibly unwearable, boasting towering headpieces and beadwork brassiere tops, Saint Laurent wasn’t so often inaccessible. He was among the first to produce a ready-to-wear line of clothing to get his designs into the wardrobes of everyday women and back out onto the streets. At see YSL Page 20

Add to this increasingly chaotic mix a wealthy dowager (Cindy Lawrence), an Earhartesque aviatrix (Heather Doris) and a handful of other colorful characters, and you wind up with as amusing and silly a show as you could possibly hope for.

The tall task of setting Emma Goldman’s life and philosophies to music

mma Goldman’s name was once synonymous with anarchy, free love and violence. In the first decades of the 20th century, she gave speeches to crowds of up to 25,000 with titles like “Monogamy or variety, which?” One of her talks supposedly inspired the assassination of President William

But the fun doesn’t stop there.

The Drowsy Chaperone is really a show-within-ashow. Our host is the Man in Chair (Brian Norber), a welcoming but seemingly off-kilter theater lover full of arcane bits of information about his favorite musical, The Drowsy Chaperone. He places the record of the show onto his turntable, and that’s when all the action above kicks off. The Man in Chair can’t help but share his own running commentary with the audience throughout the show, and his actions directly affect the rest of the cast in the meta-show.

As the living framing device, Brian Norber’s Man in Chair is indispensable to the success of The Drowsy Chaperone.

More than the young lovers, he is the heart and soul of the show, and Norber does an amazing job with a deceptively difficult role. It is also a delight to see Boulder’s Dinner Theatre’s artistic director and producer, Michael J. Duran, back on stage for the first time in my memory.

He and Wayne Kennedy seem to be having even more fun than the audience as they play off one another like a modern day Abbott and Costello.

What better subject for a musical?

That’s the thinking of Paonia resident Marty Durlin and her work, Beautiful Radiant Things, which comes to Boulder April 28 and Denver April 29. It is a musical take on the anarchist’s life, set

during a two-year stint in a Missouri prison Goldman served after opposing World War I conscription. Durlin admits that most people view musical theater as light and unserious, which makes the choice to write a musical about Goldman seem somewhat strange.

“It’s true,” she says, but adds, “People have written musicals about just about everything at this point. It’s not quite as odd as it sounds, but it was kind of weird. … We think of musicals as being South Pacific or My Fair Lady or something kind of classic, but really, anything works. This is the most fun I’ve had doing anything like this.”

screen Jazz gives the blues ‘Chico and Rita’ animates love

I

n America, the term “adult animation” still conjures up images of inappropriate drawings, an alarming genre enjoyed by a thankfully small subgroup of the human race. But for the rest of the world, cartoons are more than just a way to sell Happy Meal tie-ins. As France showed with Persepolis and Israel demonstrated with Waltz With Bashir, the limitless potential of animation dismantles budget concerns and opens the door to imaginative ways to tell very grown-up stories.

This is a fancy way to tell you that Chico and Rita has cartoon boobies in it.

Written by Ignacio Martínez de Pisón and Fernando Trueba, who was also part of the directing team with Tono Errando and Javier Mariscal, Chico and Rita scored a huge coup when it kicked Steven Spielberg right in the Oscars, snatching an expected nomination at this year’s awards away from The Adventures of Tintin.

Spanning 60 years, the film is a hand-drawn love story that actually has much in common with best picture winner The Artist; there’s even a tiny dog that factors in.

Chico (voiced by Eman Xor Oña) is a wicked good piano player living in Cuba in 1948. He spends his free time banging blondes from the states, but Yankee girls are just a way to pass his time. By contrast, Rita (voiced by LImara Meneses) is the kind of girl a life can be defined by. After he happens to catch her singing, Chico becomes obsessed with the curvy, big-voiced beauty, and she too feels the Havana heat. The duo pair up musically and carnally, until Rita discovers that Chico is a musical man whore.

Thus begins decades of near-misses for true love. The pair reunites and wins a contest that brings them moderate fame, only to be split up when Rita is offered a chance to go to New York and be famous. Chico chases her abroad and they reunite, only to be split up by a nasty businessman who gets Chico deported. The

pattern goes boff, break-up, repeat.

With a backdrop of racial issues that are never fully or seamlessly incorporated into the story proper, most notably when Rita gives a weird rant on stage about her mistreatment that seems to come out of nowhere, the movie is, somewhat frustratingly, set in very interesting times but does little that’s actually interesting. For example, Dizzy Gillespie appears, but is pretty much ignored. The same goes for the way the film barely pauses to acknowledge how Cuba shifted from a decadent near-paradise to a broken-down slum.

Still, the core of the film is honest and sincere. Contrast this animated love story between a man and a woman caught in the grips of fame with the one featured in The Artist, and you’ll swear this two-dimensional animation had more three-dimensional characters. While it fails to fire on all cylinders, it sports a gobstoppingly toe-tapping soundtrack and enough cartoon passion to justify consuming its slight running time. Even if it misses a few beats, Chico and Rita more than keeps the rhythm and our interest.

Encased inside an apartment complex rented entirely by ne’er-do-wells, miscreants and thieves, all of whom know kung fu and furnish their homes with nothing but knives and machetes, the evil mob boss has created an ideal deathtrap. The only person who could survive such a thing would be a perfect human specimen with impossible reflexes and a pain tolerance equal to delivering quintuplets without an epidural. Enter Rama, the baddest mamma-jamma to ever stab a guy with a broken fluorescent light bulb.

‘The Raid: Redemption’ delivers tasty action

ometimes, life is simple. If you don’t like beef, don’t order a rib-eye. If you don’t like stale, recycled jokes, don’t watch CBS sitcoms. If you don’t like action movies, avoid The Raid: Redemption like a television-phobic vegan would avoid the stuff mentioned above.

Writer/director Gareth Evans, who admittedly did much more to earn the latter half of his hyphened title than the former, delivers what is essentially a “dude ballet.” Featuring meticulous choreography, orchestrated and punctuated with unflinching cinematic savagery, The Raid is an ode to gratuitous violence, a punch-drunk opus that barely Boulder Weekly

stops to breathe.

Like yoga pants worn in public, the plot is flimsy and mostly see-through, but it still covers the important stuff.

Rama (Iko Uwais) is a good cop. You can tell because he has a pregnant wife, and cops with pregnant wives can never be corrupt jerkwads.

Unfortunately for Rama, his friends must be less potent or their spouses more barren, because most of them are evil or inept. That makes taking down a blood-thirsty crime lord (Ray Sahetapy)

violent with a capital V that stands for “vivisection.” And yet, it’s mostly harmless, as nobody in this film even passably resembles a real human being. This isn’t just because the characters are more shallow than a Smurf ’s wading pool, but because the sheer amount of impossible punishment rendered unto their faces turns them into cartoons. It would be akin to getting riled up by the aggression Tom shows Jerry.

But we have not come here to bury The Raid: Redemption, but to praise it.

Outside of its stupid, studio-mandatedcolon title, this is an exercise in brutal grace.

If such a thing is your cup of tea, it’s an Olympic-sized pool of Earl Grey.

While Evans, a Scotsman whose first major movie is Indonesian, will soon be offered American opportunities, it’s hard to imagine a better global debut than this.

I

n a decade of exploring the polar region, Eric Larsen has had enough time to travel in the Arctic and Antarctic on skis, on dog sleds and on foot.

He’s visited penguin colonies and passed polar bear tracks. And he’s started seeing thinner ice, more open water, freeze-ups later, thaws earlier, a change in population in polar bears and retreating sea ice. He’s watched the texture of the polar ice change from flat, thick sheets with fractures at the edges to larger rough areas, an indication of thinner ice.

Larsen has linked his expeditions with environmental education for years.

At first, he pushed for legislation and international policy. Now, he’s addressing the public with a simpler message: snow and ice are cool.

Getting that information out is just the edge of a much larger iceberg tied to why Larsen likes spending so much time in below-freezing temperatures.

“I like polar expeditions because they’re places that not a lot of people know of or really are aware of,” he says.

Larsen estimates he’s made 10 to 12 expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic regions, almost once a year for the past 10 years. He uses the lure of adventure as a

chance to tell people more about the poles.

“Not a lot of people really understand what those places are like,” he says. Antarctica is a continent of rock with up to two miles of ice piled on top of it. Skiing to the South Pole means skiing uphill, into the wind, for 750 miles. Though temperatures are typically colder in the Antarctic, the Arctic experience is its own brand of fierce.

The Arctic is made of ice floating on water, only about five feet thick and constantly moving. The humidity leaves everything covered in frost.

“It’s a very dynamic place. The ice is breaking apart. It forms leads, which are these open sections of water, it collides together and forms pressure ridges, it grinds up, freezing, refreezing so you have a real varied mix of conditions,” he says. “And that ice is actually pushing backwards as we travel north.”

Each morning, they wake up a little farther south than they were when they went to sleep, he says. Sometimes the difference is a quarter of a mile, sometimes it’s up to two miles.

“You can’t think about it too much because it’s disheartening to work 10 hours all day busting your butt through all that stuff and then have lost that mileage while you slept,” he says.

by Elizabeth Miller intrigued by the north, attributing that to growing up in Wisconsin and taking trips into northern Minnesota and Canada to the edge of the boreal forest.

“It’s just this huge wilderness, and to me it made me just kind of want to keep traveling through there and find out what’s around the next corner,” he says. He worked in Alaska as a backcountry ranger before coming back to Minnesota and landing a job guiding dogsled tours.

“The first time I stepped on the runners of a dogsled, it was just like everything came together for me,” he says. “I remember it was the first snow, the dogs were just full of so much energy, coming home they were just tearing up the ground, there was this hairpin turn, I was flung off but I was hanging on by one hand — which is pretty

common on dogsleds — I drug myself back up, had snow packed in everywhere and I was like, this is awesome, I’m never going to do anything else.”

Dogsled guiding took him to northern Canada to a small cabin far enough north that the Northern Lights stretched from one horizon to the next.

Clients were flown in — as were the 34 dogs, which came in a Twin Otter plane.

“Traveling through these areas, I’d read about all these different places since I was a kid and it was like, I just couldn’t believe it,” he says. “I don’t think I ever looked back. There were lots of hurdles and obstacles, but this was when I was like, ‘Wow, this could really happen. I thought it was just a see POLAR EXPLORER Page 40

When he comes home to Boulder to thaw out, it feels almost surreal, he says.

“It’s like things don’t have as much meaning, because on those trips everything that you do is focused on your ability to live and survive and move forward, so it’s a very direct thing,” he says.

“All the sudden, when it’s like everything’s easy, it’s like ‘Oh, it doesn’t really matter anymore,’ so you kind of get this letdown a bit.”

But it does still have him thinking about conservation, he says, as he looks around his house and thinks about down sizing.

A similar bare-bones approach applies to his thoughts on climate change.

“Either you believe in the fundamental principles of science or you don’t because we’re not arguing about whether gravity exists or not, yet it’s the same kind of process to explain that,” he says.

“So my goal is really all to talk about, let’s not worry about what evidence we’re seeing, let’s worry about being energy-efficient and using renewable resources.”

As with his expeditions, he says, the process begins with a single step.

“As individuals let’s just take those first couple steps so we can start moving in the right direction. It’s not the answer, it’s not the thing that’s going to make all that go away, but it’s the steps that are going to drive a lot of these other changes — new technologies, national legislation or international policy.”

Dreams of free meals Boulder’s food bloggers post for passion, not profit

I

t isn’t tough to spot the food writers at Brasserie Ten Ten on a sunny Sunday. Buddy Thomas’ professional Nikon sits on the table, ready to snap oysters, mussels and whatever brunch is going to be. And Thomas and fellow blogger Paul McCullough both sport homemade T-shirts with BoulderFoodBlog.com boldly inscribed on them.

Undercover critics they’re not. But Thomas and McCullough, who started Boulder Food Blog on Facebook at the end of February, aren’t going for the hardened critic angle. The two Tulsa transplants run their site to pay homage, they say, to a food scene they both love.

Thomas and McCullough joined a food blog scene in Boulder that strongly resembles Boulder itself: Boulder’s unpaid dining scribes are adventurous, eager to travel and fixated on the local.

And, at least in the case of Boulder Food Blog, they love brews.

“We’re beer fans too,” Thomas says.

Since McCullough started the Facebook page in late February, he’s seen traffic steadily rising. He invited Thomas to join after the two met and realized they shared a hometown, an interest in digital media and a love of food. Now, they’re neighbors, co-workers and co-bloggers, and McCullough’s iPhone photos have upgraded to Thomas’ professional-quality shots.

The two are plainly excited about the increase in visitors to their page.

“We were like, ‘Woo hoo!’” says McCullough.

McCullough and Thomas say they aren’t interested in hiding their identities or writing scathing reviews. Part of their mission, they say, is to give some attention to people in the restaurant industry whose work they respect.

“We just want to get our site out to everybody, you know, especially the restaurants,” Thomas says. “Because the chefs, these people — it’s art.”

“Food is art,” says McCullough.

“That’s exactly what it is,” says Thomas.

They say they don’t care much about making money in any form through the blog. The thanks is enough.

“To have somebody else’s appreciation for something you’ve done is just awesome,” Thomas says. “That’s all we’re really here for. If it starts monetizing, great.

We’re gonna start spending that on food.”

“He asked me the other day,” McCullough says, “‘What do we wanna get out of this?’ I was like, ‘I’d take a free meal.’ One free meal.”

That attitude is a common theme for Boulder’s bloggers: They aren’t doing it as a job.

But Grace Boyle says it’s become more than a hobby. Boyle, a veteran Boulder food blogger, says her site Grace(full) Plate — and her new Facebook page, Boulder Food News — land somewhere between full-time work and casual side project.

“It’s really just a labor of love,” Boyle says. “And I also joke that it’s a jobby — it’s a job and a hobby.”

Boyle has run Grace(full) Plate, where she posts reviews of restaurants and store products as well as family recipes and travel experiences, for about two years.

Recently, she says, she wanted an outlet for food-related items that was strictly news.

“I was starting to write a lot about the Colorado culinary scene, if you will,” Boyle says. “And I started learning a lot about what was happening locally, but it didn’t warrant long blog posts.”

She says she picked Facebook as the venue for the news page because it is more accessible than a blog.

“Not everyone is reading blogs, but everyone — my grandpa is on Facebook,” she says. “It’s really approachable and easy.

It’s really easy to share there, and it’s short and digestible.”

And Boyle’s taking full advantage.

Boulder Food News is updated multiple times a day with news briefs and links about food in Boulder County. Like McCullough and Thomas, Boyle says she runs the blog because she’s so impressed with the Boulder food scene.

“The biggest thing I love,” she says, “is the focus on local and sustainable and

fresh.”

Toni Dash couldn’t agree more. The woman behind Boulder Locavore says the idea for the blog came about after a winter when she went beyond even most Boulderites in her quest to eat locally.

“I decided to see if I could really spend winter with all the produce and meat that I would eat being sourced locally,” she says. “And I discovered lots of different resources, I employed a lot of different food-keeping methods that I wouldn’t have normally.”

From there, word of mouth took over.

“I remember having lunch with a friend who was the last of a litany who would say, ‘Oh, can you send me all those resources?’” she says. “And I can remember sending an email with 14 different links and thinking, OK, I’m going to put everything in one place so I can say, ‘Come here and look,’ instead of me sending it out.”

Boulder Locavore is a lot more than 14 links now. Like Grace(full) Plate, Dash’s site mixes recipes, travelogues and restaurant descriptions in a formula that garners dozens of comments on every post.

“It seems to be working,” she says modestly.

Dash notes that her blog appeared at just the right time to match a social movement she sees happening.

“The start of this coincided with a food movement, eating locally and seasonally,” she says. She keeps up with localfood developments in photo-filled posts about local farms, chefs and restaurants that use local ingredients, highlighted in a section of her blog.

But Dash isn’t interested in just writing the posts that readers might want to see, which, she says, typically would be recipes. “I really have gone with my gut,” she says. “My intuition has been my guide.”

Dash says she never cared whether Web traffic dipped when she wrote about the things she was interested in. And, recently, the dip isn’t there any more.

“I could probably publish a dessert recipe every day and I’d have a billion hits,” she says. “People love desserts. They love a good cocktail. They love gooey, fatty food. But I don’t wanna write just for that.

“A year ago, when I would divert from recipes and write about a local cultural thing, the traffic would be a lot less. And that has changed,” she says.

Like the other writers, passion and excitement are at the heart of Dash’s work.

“I do my best work when I’m excited,” she says. “Going with what catches my interest allows me to be fun, funny and interesting.”

During the taste-off, wineries will pour two wines, and participants will tweet about what they taste. Over the last three years, 10 million tweets and re-tweets about the event have been shared.

Awards will be given out for best red wine, best white wine, favorite media wine and people’s choice wine, as well as best tweet or series of tweets. Unfortunately, no award is going out for drunkest tweeter.
