Highroad Hotel giants trying to peddle plastic

A

s everyone who travels a lot soon learns, when you stay in the hotels of the big chains, it’s easy to forget where you are, since they’re all alike, offering all the charm of Noplace, USA. This disorienting sameness has become more dizzying in recent years as the chains have merged and conglomerated. Weary travelers might

choose to stay overnight in one of the Residence Inn hotels, or a Courtyard, the TownPlace Suites or even splurge for a night in a ritzy Ritz-Carlton. In fact, though, you’re in a Marriott, the $14-billion-a-year amalgamation that owns all of the above chains, along with 15 others. Marriott is among the world’s 10 largest hotel operators that have a combined 113 different chains in their crowded stable of brand names.

Naturally, as uniformity and conglomeration have taken over the industry, a consumer rebellion has erupted, with more and more travelers, especially younger ones, seeking out independent hotels, unique inns and local B&Bs. They prefer the un-corporate places that have cool names like the Moxy, Canopy and Vib. But, oh crud, guess what? All three of those are chains of “hip” hotels, that opened in the past year and are owned respectively by

Marriott, Hilton and Best Western.

Known in the industry as “lifestyle hotels,” these fake-independent lodgings are the hot new niche for megaconglomerates trying to nab travelers in search of authenticity. “The big hotel chains are in the business of pretending they aren’t big chains,” says Pauline Frommer, editor of the wellregarded Frommer’s travel guides. “They want you to think they are boutiques.”

Sneaky! But do they think that duping customers is a good business strategy? Not only will we dup-ees quickly see that we’re being sold plastic “authenticity,” but we’ll also be PO’d about it. Good luck with that.

A

bout one in three American workers are temps, according to a recent report from the Freelancers Union and a temp agency called ElanceoDesk Inc. That’s 53 million people (or 34 percent of the workforce). That’s sort of an update of a comprehensive U.S. Government Accountability Office report in 2006 that found that 31 percent were temps.

This is a trend going back a few decades. Back in 1971, a temp agency called Western Services had an ad in the Personnel Journal urging employers to convert all of their permanent employees into temps: “Just say goodbye... then shift them to our payroll and say hell-o again!”

Why should they do that? Another temp agency called Kelly Services provided a blunt answer that same year in an ad in The Office, a human resources journal, promoting the “Never-Never Girl,” who, the company said: “Never takes a vacation or holiday. Never asks for a raise.

Never costs you a dime for slack time.

(When the workload drops, you drop her.) Never has a cold, slipped disc or loose tooth. (Not on your time anyway!)

Never costs you for unemployment taxes and Social Security payments. (None of the paperwork, either!) Never costs you for fringe benefits. (They add up to 30 percent of every payroll dollar.)...”

These days, many temp jobs are in the “sharing economy.” That’s a gussiedup Silicon Valley-invented term for startups that allow users to rent their labor and belongings to strangers. Recent software innovations now allow jobs to be sliced and diced into small tasks that can be meted out to workers with pay based on the demand for that task.

The taxi-hailing service Uber and the real estate subletting service Airbnb are the most well known. There’s also Task Rabbit, which offers odd jobs like cleaning a garage, taking clothes to a laundry or buying groceries. Prospective Rabbits compete with each other. The one who will do the job for the least amount of money gets the gig.

Economist Robert Reich says this is the “share-the-scraps economy. ...

Customers and workers are matched online. Workers are rated on quality and reliability. The big money goes to the corporations that own the software. The scraps go to the on-demand workers.”

century — when workers had no power and no legal rights, took all the risks and worked all hours for almost nothing.”

The New Age hipster tycoons of the “share economy” yap about “revolution” and “disruption.” In an interview with Fortune magazine, Uber CEO Travis Kalanick said this about his company: “I mean, the way we look at what Uber is, it’s a cross between lifestyle — which is ‘Give me what I want and give it to me now’... like instant gratification ­— and the logistics to get it to you, right?”

Uber has hired David Plouffe, Obama’s campaign manager in 2008, to be senior vice president of policy and strategy, and former Defense Secretary Roberts Gates to recruit veterans.

The rightwing fell in love with Uber and other “sharing economy” firms after those companies developed conflicts with city and state governments over regulations. The Republican National Committee and Generation Opportunity (a Koch brothers astroturf group for young people) have conducted pro-Uber campaigns in social media.

Uber claims it should be exempt from regulations because the services are ordered on the web. That’s nonsense. It is quite sensible for governments to regulate taxi services to make sure that vehicles are safe and drivers are responsible and competent.

Uber claims it doesn’t have employees but “partners” who don’t need to be covered by workers’ compensation or protected by minimum wage and overtime rules. That’s sickening. It’s not surprising that many Uber drivers are organizing unions and have gone on strike in many cities.

Uber is a $40-billion firm that takes 20 percent of driver fares. Drivers have to supply their own cars and pay for maintenance, gas and insurance.

Management dictates the rates and terms of their labor.

Since the Uber workers own all the capital, they should be able to transform the company into a worker-owned co-op. Economist Dean Baker argues that cities should create a “public option” to compete with the car-sharing companies. These public sites would benefit consumers and service providers while cutting out the profiteering middlemen.

At any rate, we need a genuine sharing economy.

The town and university I came to as a freshman in 1964 were far different creatures from what they are now. A room on the Hill ran from $25-40 a month, and leases lasted nine months.

Boulder technically was “dry” and 3.2 beer was King of the Hill. The Sink had as good a jukebox selection as anywhere in America. Tuition and fees were $186 a semester and remained so for my entire tenure. Food services and the dining hall in the UMC were run as nonprofits by the University. The draft, Vietnam and Regent Joe Coors hung heavily over the campus, and Paul Danish, Paul Talmey and Samir Zakhem conducted spirited political debates in the courtyard.

Communication was face-to-face and Howard Higman reigned over the department of sociology. In short, Boulder was very much a college town and was once tagged by a local wag as “Baghdad by the Flatirons” for its unique, even exotic character here in the hinterlands of the country.

Today, Boulder is a city of developers and landlords, and the university as well has jumped whole-heartedly into that enterprise spirit. For the city, the Danish Plan, at the time, was cuttingedge urban planning, a community surrounded and enhanced by open spaces free from development. The, perhaps unintended, consequence has been a creeping elitist gentrification and its subsequent occasionally snobbish heirs.

No longer able to grow outward, the developers’ push for profit has focused on growing the city upward and into greater and greater density. Businesses

are encouraged to locate here and commuters coming in for work fill the morning and evening roadways.

“Affordable housing,” despite the growing profusion of warren-like apartment complexes springing up, is a phrase that largely rings with irony here.

Meanwhile the university clings to an outworn (and doomed to fail) business model of constant expansion.

Vista Ridge deserves council intervention

The Greater Boulder Green Party strongly supports an intervention by the Boulder City Council on the matter of Vista Village. We stand in solidarity with the residents of Vista Village in their request for Boulder City Council to create an ordinance that protects mobile home owners from harassment by mobile home park management and unlawful rules by land owners on the resale of their homes. Mobile housing residents need support.

When owners and management of mobile home parks try to declare older homes unsalable, even though they comply with all city housing ordinances, something needs to be done. When mobile home park owners harass residents who want to sell their older home, people on low-income budgets who are then denied a way to move, something needs to be done. It’s time for an intervention.

Gun nuts

Now, I read that Tim McGraw is being attacked by the gun nuts for being unpatriotic because McGraw wants to play a concert to benefit the families of the victims of the Sandy Hook Massacre. It is time for the Second Amendment to be repealed.

There is absolutely no need for ordinary Americans to arm themselves with handguns and semi-automatic weapons.

The NRA and Republicans would have us believe that it is un-American to want gun control and regulation, because they want to sell guns. The NRA and Republicans and American gun nuts are immoral and reprehensible and put the lives of our children at risk so that they can make money from gun sales.

Sustainable eating

Just in time for the 45th anniversary of Earth Day, the U.S. Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee has made it official: consumption of animal products is not environmentally sustainable. Their conclusions match those of a massive 2010 United Nations report, which concluded that a global shift towards a vegan diet is vital to save the world from hunger, fuel poverty and climate change.

Carbon dioxide, the chief greenhouse gas, is emitted by burning forests to create animal pastures and by combustion of fossil fuels to operate farm machinery, trucks, refrigeration equipment, factory farms, and slaughterhouses. The much more damaging methane and nitrous oxide are released from digestive tracts of cattle and from animal waste cesspools.

Moreover, animal agriculture contributes more pollutants to our waterways than other human activities combined. Principal sources are animal wastes, soil particles, minerals, crop debris, fertilizers and pesticides from feed croplands. It is also the driving force in world-wide deforestation and wildlife habitat destruction.

Let Polis know what you think about his support of TPP

Media spin on the Trans-Pacific Partnership has assumed Orwellian dimensions. For six years, government officials and corporate “advisors” secretly negotiated a 29-chapter corporate bill of rights comprising thousands of pages. Promoters now claim ramrodding the TPP through Congress via “fast track” will somehow “open up” the process. Voters are supposed to believe “fast track” also known as Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) will magically transform a secretly negotiated corporate-friendly trade deal into an exemplar of the democratic process.

Sadly, Congressman Jared Polis seems to buy into the double speak.

Polis recently wrote that fast track “empowers Congress to define the objectives and rules that must be followed when the administration negotiates trade deals.” Polis added that “absent renewal of TPA, the President lacks formal guidance from Congress about our priorities for any trade deal.”

Exactly how might Congress provide formal guidance for an essentially done deal six years in the making?

TPP supporters say certain “protections” will be built into fast track. This last-minute tweak is sadly reminiscent of the now infamous NAFTA “sidebars” President Clinton promised would protect jobs and the environment. A million lost American jobs, mass immigration and ruined stretches of the U.S.-Mexico border are sad testaments to those earlier assurances.

Tell Polis to stop supporting Fast Track for TPP

On April 16, a Fast Track Agreement (known as the Hatch bill) for the TransPacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement was introduced in the U.S. Senate.

The Hatch bill is the result of a back room deal cut in Washington and, if passed, will oil the skids for multinational corporations to achieve their long-sought goal of passing the TPP. The Hatch bill and the TPP sound like dream deals for large corporations.

The Hatch bill delegates away Congress’ constitutional authority over trade and forbids amendments to the TPP. Just like NAFTA before it, TPP will negatively affect Americans in myriad ways.

TPP will cause outsourcing of jobs to low-wage countries and put downward pressure on American wages; allow foreign tribunals to undermine our democracy by attacking domestic laws for interfering with corporate profits; and destroy the environment both here and abroad. In addition, the TPP would promote increased fracking and climate change; give more power to corporations over the Internet; and extend patents and increase drug prices.

Members of Congress have only been permitted to see TPP segments in a locked room and could not take notes or talk to staff or experts. The American public, of course, has had no access at all to this huge secret document except for sections leaked through Wiki Leaks. How is Congress supposed to know what they’re voting for under these conditions?

Congressman Jared Polis has finally gone public and admits he supports the Hatch Fast Track bill. The present Fast Track deal is as bad as the one from last year, which 151 Democrats in the House opposed. President Obama refuses to refer to ISIL, Al Qaeda, Hamas, Hezbollah, the Quds Force and others as Islamic terrorists. He tends to mischaracterize the attacks by the radical Islamic terrorists on Christians, Jews and other non-Muslims, and he seems hesitant to vigorously take the fight to the terrorists. Why is that?

The Obama administration talks about creating economic opportunities and jobs in the Islamic world as a cure for Islamic extremism. How can this work when radical Islamic ideology states Islam is the only true religion and non-Muslims have to convert, or pay tribute, or be killed?

Can conflict reporting survive the digital age?

n April 2, four members of the Somalibased terrorist group al-Shaba stormed the campus of Garissa University in Northern Kenya. By the end of the ensuing standoff with Kenyan authorities, 147 people were dead and another 79 wounded.

But why was the university attacked?

On April 20, a boat carrying more than a thousand refugees headed to Europe from North Africa sank off the coast of Libya. As of press time, it is feared that as many as 900 refugees have drowned. In addition, distress calls have been received from two other vessels carrying several hundred more refugees.

The death toll is reported up to the minute, but why aren’t we being told why these refugees are fleeing or what conditions caused them to risk their lives on such a perilous crossing?

In Northern Iraq, even as this article is being written, the U.S. military is flying air support for Iranian Shiites who are fighting the Sunni members of the Islamic State (IS). At the same time just 1,200 miles to the south, U.S. warships off the coast of Yemen are preparing for combat against Iranian naval vessels that are taking arms shipments to Shiite rebels attempting to topple the mostly Sunni-led government of Yemen.

So how is it the U.S. can be both fighting along side and against the Iranians at the exact same time?

These are just a few current examples of the type of confusing, context-free reporting making its way out of the world’s black holes, those trouble spots that have become so dangerous that few reporters, if any, dare set foot in them.

For years, we have relied on the critical information provided by conflict photographers and reporters to help us understand the complexities of the world’s warzones and the ramifications of what is happening both on the battlefields and behind the scenes.

But today, as more and more of these specialized journalists are being killed, kidnapped and under sup12 April 23, 2015

ported financially, the black holes are growing as they trap ever more of the credible information that once found its way to the outside world.

Ironically, much of this information void can be attributed to our own advancements in communication technology.

“Tech has always been extremely helpful in allowing us to do this important work, but there is a downside now because the technology is also available to the warring parties,” says Greg Campbell, award-winning journalist, author, filmmaker and veteran reporter of numerous conflicts, including a recent venture into northern Iraq. “Unlike when I started reporting back in Bosnia in the 1990s, there’s no longer a concept that the people fighting need the media to tell their side of the story. Back then you could just put something on your helmet or your car to identify yourself as a journalist and that made people think twice about killing you or kidnapping you because they didn’t want the bad publicity of firing on a journalist. Leonardi says most teachers receive no preparation in starting conversations with students about LGBTQ topics.

“There’s the idea of … internal safety, the way that heteronormativity is throughout curriculum — who you can bring to prom, the stories you can read, the families you can see — all that stuff keeps queer identities out in a different way than bullying,” Leonardi says. “For queer kids or kids who don’t identify in the gender binary or in any binary really, there’s no place for them to make sense of themselves.

There’s no framework to make sense of who you are or who you’re becoming.

So while they might not be [physically] bullied, there’s still this sense of ‘Where do I fit? Where’s the framework that’s available to me to figure out who I’m becoming?’”

Sara Connell, the transgender programming coordinator for Out Boulder, will lead a conference session on transgender narratives in young adult fiction. The session will begin with a short discussion on current transgender language, and then move into an examination of some common tropes found in contemporary young adult literature featuring transgender narratives.

“People will start to see that a lot of these stories talk about shame or having a secret or being born in the wrong body,” Connell says, so the second part of her presentation will focus on presenting a solution to these narrow ideas of what it means to be transgender. “How do we flip these scripts about transgender people always have to be sad and depressed and have a

huge conflict with their bodies, and they always want surgery and they always have to want hormones — how do we write stories that don’t fit in that box? A lot of these things are still limiting for our community.”

Connell, Leonardi and Staley all agree that high-quality queer young adult literature should have a plot that doesn’t revolve around the character’s gender identity or sexual orientation.

“I think the next step is when a queer character’s identity doesn’t become the back-of-the-book’s selling point,” Connell says. “I want love stories where people happen to be queer-identified.

Or stories where someone already transitioned six years ago and the point of the story is trying to get into student government, and it just happens they are a transgender character.”

There are a number of authors in the young adult genre who have created transformative queer literature for young adults. Patricipants will have the chance to interact with authors Malinda Lo (a former Boulder County resident), Julie Anne Peters (who currently resides in Lakewood), Sara Farizan and Alex Sanchez. Sanchez’s Rainbow series trilogy, focusing on the issues gay and questioning youth face as they come of age, has won numerous awards, including the American Library Association’s award for Best Book for Young Adults.

The conference will also include writing workshops, discussions on creating gay-straight alliances, dialogues on what it means to be an ally and an introduction on including a queer literacy framework in the classroom.

“We think about the word ‘queer’ not just as an adjective to describe someone’s gender or sexual identity, but also to queer something or turn something on its head,” Leonardi says. “Because of that historical silence in schools around LGBTQ topics, bringing these issues into education is a queer endeavor. So we kind of use [the word queer] to signify a few things: To queer something, to play with something that’s been ‘normal’ for so long — and it’s not normal. It’s very diminishing and isolating and keeping a lot of identities out of education spaces.”

“We’re working on food waste and food security issues at the same time,” Danksy says. “It hits environmental and social issues at the same time.

The food waste conversation is becoming more well-known in the country. More and more people are understanding perfectly good food is going to waste and getting riled up about it,” Dansky says. She adds that Boulder Food Rescue is trying to build better relationships with grocery stores, many of which produce a lot of food waste that can be redistributed to people in need.

In order to make events like the Forward Food Summit more impactful, and to make the work her organization does more efficient, Dansky says, she’s soliciting people who actually use the service to serve on the group’s board and attend meetings.

“There’s a lot of places where I think we can do better. I’d really like to have people that are recipients of our food involved in the board and as members of our organization. We want to involve people in our organization by taking feedback. Although we put on the Summit, we’re learning a lot too and adjusting our gaps and trying to create fun solutions about how to change that and do good work,” Dansky says.

Going forward, Dansky says the group plans to hold another summit next year with a topic to be determined later. Partnering with food rescue and food security groups in the area and around the country will help to build a better network.

“With food security, we have pretty close relationships with food rescue groups around the country,” Dansky says. “The second day of the summit, all the food rescue organizations got together and discussed what are our common values were — food redistribution, food rescue, distributing resources on bicycles — and how do we hone in on that and use our momentum together to be louder and be part of this national conversation about food security.”

our chemicals, present both inside and outside homes might disrupt our endocrine systems at levels considered safe by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, according to an analysis released on April 15.

The chemicals — benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene — are ubiquitous: in the air outside and in many products inside homes and businesses.

These chemicals have been linked to reproductive, respiratory and heart problems, as well as lower birth weight. Now researchers from The Endocrine Disruption Exchange (TEDX) and the University of Colorado Boulder, say that such health impacts may be due to the chemicals’ ability to interfere with people’s hormones at low exposure levels.

“There’s evidence of connection between the low level, everyday exposures and things like asthma, reduced fetal growth,” said Ashley Bolden, a research associate at TEDX and lead author of the study. “And for a lot of the health effects found, we think it’s disrupted endocrine-signaling pathways involved in these outcomes.”

Bolden and colleagues — including scientist, activist, author and TEDX founder Theo Colborn, who passed away last December — pored over more than 40 studies on the health impacts of low exposure to the chemicals.

They looked at exposures lower than the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s reference concentrations for the chemicals, which is the agency’s estimated inhalation exposure level that is not likely to cause health impacts during a person’s lifetime.

Many of the health problems — asthma, low birth weights, cardiovascular, disease, preterm births, abnormal sperm — can be rooted in early disruptions to the developing endocrine system, Bolden said.

The analysis doesn’t prove that exposure to low levels of the chemicals disrupt hormones. However, any potential problems with developing hormone systems are cause for concern.

“Hormones are how the body communicates with itself to get work done.

Interrupt that, you can expect all sorts of negative health outcomes,” said Susan Nagel, an associate professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women’s Health School of Medicine, who was not involved in the study.

and incorporate the findings into our work as appropriate.”

The “EPA is screening thousands of chemicals for potential risk of endocrine disruption,” she said. “As potential risk of endocrine disruption is identified, these chemicals are assessed further.”

The four chemicals are retrieved from the wellheads during crude oil and natural gas extraction and, after refining, are used as gasoline additives and in a wide variety of consumer products such as adhesives, detergents, degreasers, dyes, pesticides, polishes and solvents.

Ethylbenzene is one of the top 10 chemicals used in children’s products such as toys and playground equipment, according to a 2013 EPA report.

Toluene is in the top 10 chemicals used in consumer products such as fuels and paints, the report found.

All four get into indoor and outdoor air via fossil fuel burning, vehicle emissions and by volatizing from products.

Bolden said studies that measure the air in and around homes and businesses find the chemicals 90 to 95 percent of the time.

When the BP-operated Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010, 200 million gallons of crude oil poured into the Gulf. Nearly five years later, a report released by the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) reveals that many sea creatures — namely dolphins, sea turtles and numerous species of fish — are still struggling to recover.

The report, released at the end of March, names 20 animals that were affected by the spill, with damages to juveniles or reproductive systems a main concern that may not be fully understood for years. Also, around 32 percent of laughing gulls have died as a result of the oil spill, according to the NWF, and up to 65,000 Kemp’s ridley sea turtles died during the spill, with the number of sea turtle nests discovered dropping every year since 2010. Facing similar struggles, bottlenose dolphins were found dead off the coast of Louisiana last year at four times the historic rate.

Following the backlash surrounding the report, Geoff Morrell, BP’s senior vice president of U.S. communications, has contested that the NWF’s work is merely a “work of political advocacy by an organization that has referred to the Deepwater Horizon accident as an ‘historic opportunity’ to finance its policy agenda,” as stated to NBC News.

BP released its own report in early March that says wildlife in the region is “returning to pre-spill levels,” and that long-term population impact doesn’t seem apparent in the Gulf. Noting that the effect of the spill over longer periods can’t be assessed, Ryan Fikes, co-author of the NWF sport, told NBC News that BP’s ruling is premature.

“No one knows that yet,” he said. “It’s far too early to make that determination. Many of these species are longlived and we’re still collecting data on them.”

“Contrary to their intentions, what this report actually shows is that people should be no more afraid of oil and gas development than products in their home,” she said.

The Consumer Specialty Products Association, a trade group that represents companies that manufacturer consumer goods including cleaning products, pesticides and polishes, would not comment on the study, but a spokesperson said that member groups typically don’t use the chemicals mentioned.

In several of the monitoring studies Bolden and colleagues examined, levels of the chemicals were higher in indoor air than in outdoor air, suggesting that people might be exposed within their homes.

“A lot of time, indoor air is poorly circulated,” Bolden said.

Nagel cited a “huge need” to look at the impact of exposure to ambient levels of these chemicals. The study high-

lights “a whole lot we don’t know” about how these compounds may impact humans, she said.

Using human tissue cells, Nagel’s lab has previously shown that the chemicals can disrupt the androgen and estrogen hormones.

The authors said regulators should give air contaminants the same attention they’ve given greenhouse gas emissions recently.

“Tremendous efforts have led to the development of successful regulations focused on controlling greenhouse gases in an attempt to reduce global temperatures,” the authors wrote in the study published today in Environmental Science and Technology journal.

“Similar efforts need to be directed toward compounds that cause poor air quality both indoors and outdoors.”

Celin Serbo catapulted work as a guide into a career as an adventure photographer. Self-taught, Serbo’s work has taken him places like this 2006 hut trip in the Swiss Alps.

Living the dream

At one time, he was a rock climbing guide in Estes Park who drove a rusted-out Toyota Tercel (and, later, a school bus, but we’ll get to that). Today he is a professional adventure photographer and filmmaker with clients that include Patagonia, Black Diamond and Prana.

Serbo readily admits that adventure photographer is a dream job. “At one point, it was a dream job — I dreamed to do it,” he says. Now it is his reality.

A self-described practical hard worker, Serbo left his hometown of Sedona by way of Flagstaff, Ariz., for college and then migrated north to Denver in 1993. At that point, he had never been into photography.

“I was given a medium format twin lens camera from my stepfather. That’s the first thing I learned on, developing my own film and doing my own prints and doing my best Ansel Adams ripoffs,” he says.

Serbo is a self-taught photographer and filmmaker, but if you wanted to stretch it, you could say Adams was his first teacher of sorts. Serbo picked up Adams’ books The Camera, The Negative and The Print then set about learning how to become a photographer. That plus a $9-per-hour darkroom rental

It took place years ago on a guiding expedition to Ecuador. He was belaying clients up a headwall on the Cayambe volcano. It was early morning and the sun was just beginning to rise.

“The sunrise was like, ‘Oooh’ … You could see down the entire cordillera [chain of mountains],” Serbo recounts. “I was debating [asking my clients to] wait a second … but you’re guiding.”

The one thing that never got away from Serbo Boulder Weekly

in Denver put him on his path.

Then he got a job as a rock climbing guide for Colorado Mountain School, and he also got an SLR camera. Photography became a hobby while guiding.

He took the camera with him on trips in Colorado as well as guiding trips to South America.

One time, as Serbo and friends in Estes gathered for a barbecue and slide show of their work, his friend Topher Donahue — already an established professional writer and photographer — encouraged Serbo to essentially go pro.

“He mentioned, ‘Hey man, you should send some of these in to Patagonia,’” Serbo says.

Serbo did, and he got published.

Still, he couldn’t exactly quit his day job. He did leave guiding in 2004, but he took work driving a school bus, which allowed for a steady income yet still a good amount of free time.

Sitting in a coffee shop in Boulder, Serbo uses his hands to mimic scales, indicating how the photography and video work increased as his other work decreased. He started doing the photo and video work full time around 2008.

He has gone on to do mostly commercial work plus some editorial work for publications that include magazines like Outside, Sierra, Climbing and Rock and Ice. Serbo calls it a “small world” of people in those circles — a circle he’s now made himself a part of.

as well as places like Peru, Switzerland and Norway. (His favorite place? The Moab, Utah area.)

He’s also won numerous awards, including an honorable mention in the photo competition at the 2010 Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival.

How did he make it in a field where there are plenty of talented amateur photographers who would like to do the same?

“It’s half art, and it’s half business,” Serbo says, “Most people gravitate to the art and they suck at the business. … If you’re a good photographer and business savvy, you’ll do better than a super-talented photographer [who is] unsavvy business-wise.”

But Serbo’s skills run beyond business and art — he’s a decent athlete who can do the hiking, schlepping and climbing required to get the shot. He can also handle the complexities of organizing a crew for a commercial video shoot.

Serbo considers his own specialty to be creating an image, not simply capturing what’s out there.

“I’m not a good photojournalist,” he says. “I usually have an image in my mind and an idea ahead of time that I can go and create in the actual setting.”

This is just what Ansel Adams was referring to when he described previsualizing a shot. The effort shows in Serbo’s final product. A close look shows supplemental lighting on his subject that enhances the natural light.

“I feel like I’m actually creating something,” he says.

“He has an artsy perspective, a slightly unusual perspective that makes me and many others take a second look at his imagery,” says Chris Weidner, a freelance writer and climbing columnist for the Boulder Daily Camera.

“The quality is outstanding. I mean, top-notch for sure.”

Weidner and Serbo met as climbing guides in Estes Park and have collaborated on stories for Climbing magazine.

“I think something that may not come across with his easygoing attitude is he’s a really calculated, smart person.

He really thinks about everything he does,” Weidner adds.

As the appetite for video has grown among individuals and businesses, Serbo has moved more into video in recent years and quite ably.

One mark of a professional is someone who makes it look easy. The videos are clean and attractive, and they employ radio-controlled drones.

But that’s one side of the camera — the side that the viewer sees.

And looking at stills of Serbo’s trail running shots, try to guess how many takes he had to attempt before getting the runner in perfect stride while striking the perfect balance of sunshine and artificial lighting.

Success has meant that Serbo spends a lot of time working, which is a mixed bag.

Even at a professional level, there are still the ones that get away. While photographing an ice climber, Serbo squeezed off some beautiful shots of the athlete on an ice fang. Just as Serbo was finished and putting his camera back into the bag, the fang collapsed, leaving him to see, but not record, the most dramatic moment.

“If I’d had [my camera] out, that would have been pretty amazing,” he says.

Front Range Film Festival brings Colorado filmmakers from camera to screen

C

ulture is homegrown in Boulder County — from breweries to art. In her latest documentary, Colorado Hopped — Bine to Brew, Longmont filmmaker Barbara Hau paired the two.

A few years ago, while helping a friend harvest a hops field in Wisconsin, Hau became interested in local hop farming operations. Then, when Hau noticed a few fields popping up around Longmont, she knew she wanted to make a film about the farmers, who were selling their crops to breweries around town. Through the filmmaking process, Hau intertwined a tale of farmers, breweries and the locals who enjoy a handcrafted pint.

“For me, and the crew and the farmers and the brewers, the movie is a sense of fulfillment and gratification... feeling connected to each other and to the place where we live, 26 April 23, 2015

the beer that we drink, the farms, the businesses,” Hau says. “It’s really being able to contribute to the gastronomy and the economy — what we eat and grow and taste and buy. It’s about keeping things local rather than importing.”

Colorado Hopped is just one of the several local films showing at the Front Range Film Festival that kicks off this week, with events at various locations throughout Longmont and Lyons. This marks the third year for the festival, which keeps growing each year, says film curator and festival producer Jill Brooke. This year, it has expanded to two cities and eight venues, with more than 30 short films and five feature-length films.

The festival grew out of the Friday Night Film Series at the Firehouse Art Gallery. Brooke says the film series has always been a draw for the community, especially considering Longmont no longer has a movie theater. But Boulder Weekly

beyond that, she says, it’s an opportunity for the community to support and meet local artists. The festival pushes this even further by providing the chance for people to attend a film event in their own backyard.

“For a lot of people, a film festival is something you see on television as big Hollywood stars going to Cannes or to Sundance, but to have it in your own area is a unique and fun experience,” she says. “Not everyone has that, and we get to bring that to everyone in this community.”

The festival also gives filmmakers a chance to display their films — there aren’t too many options in Colorado, Brooke says, and the Front Range Film Festival gives them an outlet.

The festival features many first-time filmmakers and others who are pursuing it as a hobby. When Hau retired a few years back, she joined the Longmont Senior Center video club, tried her hand at filmmaking and has since made a variety of short to feature-length films. Colorado Hopped is Hau’s first film to show at a festival, which is inspiring since she says she hadn’t picked up a camera until 2012.

Most of Hau’s work has been on stories around Boulder County. She says that local films can sometimes have more appeal than commercial movies. Brooke agrees with that sentiment, saying that that commercial films are great, but local movies can have more heart and neighborly ties.

“There are good reasons to have big commercial films. We all enjoy them,” Brooke says. “But these [films in the festival] are really personal films.

They are the filmmaker’s visions, usually made with friends down the street, and you’ve borrowed your grandmother’s house, and your neighbor did the makeup — so it’s a community experience. To make the film and then to share it with your community is really wonderful...

“Hollywood films are really fun, but if you’re not really into fast cars or women in peril or the same romantic drivel you can see anywhere, this is a more unique way to see film. You can see more avant garde filmmaking.”

These types of festivals stimulate the local film scene. More festivals lead to more opportunities for filmmakers, Brooke says, and when talking about independent film, more is always better. While Colorado might not be known as a filmmaking hotbed, Hau and other filmmakers say it’s rich with possibilities.

around them to examine every side.

“For me, form is never something absolute,” Miró said. “It’s always a sign of something else.”

The resulting sculptures’ sense of happy accidents is carried over into inventive, airy paintings and drawings rife with shapes that recall the silhouettes of women, birds and stars, a trio Miró calls together time and again. He saw the three, respectively, as symbols of fertility or earthly existence, imagination and poetry, and unlimited possibilities.

The exhibition opens with a painting on those themes — “Woman, Bird and Star (Homage to Pablo Picasso),” that Miró finished the day Picasso died. Amid the interlocking geometry, there are only hints of the curves of a female form, the arc of a crescent moon and an asterisk-like star — just enough to evoke empathy for the puzzlework of a human.

In contrast to that elaborate and meticulously interwoven composition are a series of predominantly white paintings hung adjacent to one another. An ascending trail of tiny black dots is threaded together with a tenuous line of black paint and given the company of two dots, one in red and the other in blue, all of them floating on a vast white canvas for “Bird in Space.” Two black lines sketch out an organic V-shape headed across the canvas, floating above three red blotches for an ethereal, meditative effect in “The Dance of the Poppies.” Where “Woman, Bird and Star” works like a sonnet in layering its self-referential forms, these largely blank canvases are haiku. In them, Miró stretches toward his goals of achieving maximum intensity with minimal means and conveying a sense of motion in immobile paint — something Miró described as like soundless music. At the least, it’s an economy of ink in the way of good writers, and an acknowledgement that some times, we are most effected not by the grand chords, but a single voice carrying a lonely melody.

The minimalist approach puts the focus on the human action and gesture in the blank field, says Juao Fernandes, deputy director of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia. We see those hands at work in a film of the artist included in the exhibition that shows him in a studio. Paintings are propped against the furniture and cover the floor in a carpet of abstract forms. The artist, white haired and fingers bent by the decades, begins with line drawings, then a brush dipped in black paint hovers over the canvas, then fingers apply green paint.

He sets the latest work among the others, then drops himself into the rocking chair facing it and gives it a hard look. The work, he said, didn’t always come in the act of applying the line to canvas, but in conceiving of where the line needed to go. He scrutinizes it then as if to ask: Have we arrived?

Whatever respite he takes while contemplating will likely be brief.

f there’s one word Rhiannon Giddens detests, it’s genres.

Classically trained in opera at Oberlin University, she moved on to a whole different style of music in becoming the leader of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, the Grammy-winning old-time string band from North Carolina — whose members all happen to be AfricanAmerican.

So Giddens clearly knows a few things about different styles of music, and being classified is something she could live without.

It proved to have its challenges, considering five bandleaders had to agree on how these songs would sound and who played what instrument on what song. But it was an experience Giddens was glad to have.

“It was pretty amazing, but it was also very difficult for me. I had to push through a lot of things for myself personally, but that’s where the best art comes, when you’re striving to overcome something,” she said. “I think it’s one of the best things that I’ve ever done in terms of the output and what I learned and gained. I think I will be processing that for years to come.”

Giddens’ path into American music began after she took up banjo and fiddle and attended an event in November 2005 called the Black Banjo Gathering in Boone, N.C. There she met Dom Flemons and Sule Greg Wilson, and the three soon formed the original lineup of the Carolina Chocolate Drops.

Touring the country, they were comfortable playing everything from Dixie and Civil War-era fare to ragtime and all stripes of country blues. Giddens has unsurprisingly carried this open-minded outlook into Tomorrow Is My Turn, although she disagrees when people talk about the broad range of music on her new record.

“I love it when people say there are so many different genres on my record but actually, not really with this specific era of American music,” she said.

“That’s also the point of the record, which is to say that all of this came out of the same well. You had Jimmie Rodgers doing blues and blues artists doing country hollers. It’s all part of the same origin, so let’s try and remember that. This all actually belongs together.

If I put electronica or rap on my album, that would be different. To me, all this music is cheek-by-jowl next to each other.”

riter/director David Robert Mitchell’s It Follows is an alarmingly well-reviewed throwback horror movie that follows Jay Height (Maika Monroe), whose vagina gets cursed by Satan after she does it with her boyfriend. He straps her to a chair and explains she’s got poltergeist AIDS now because he had it and gave it to her. He says she’ll be followed by a shape-shifting monster thing that will slowly walk at her, and if it touches her, she dies.

The rest of the movie is Jay and her friends playing a game of “let’s do something even dumber now.” Whoever It Follows slept with to get the indie horror buzz that’s surrounding it, here’s hoping their baby-making parts are now the target of demons. It’s not good, and you shouldn’t see it. The remainder of this review will be spent asking questions of Mitchell.

David, why did Hugh ( Jake Weary) change his name, break into a house and slowly seduce Jay to rid himself of the curse by “passing it on” instead of finding a sex worker, as a different character conveniently does later on?

David, I know it’s hard to find good actors and actresses, especially young ones. But there are local car commercials with more convincing performances than this. Like, it’s easier to believe Crazy Larry actually is losing his mind over those low, low prices than that Kelly (Lili Sepe) gives a shit about her sister’s vaginal possession.

David, what’s with your, quite frankly, rather icky obsession with staging Jay half nude? Why is she constantly in a

bathing suit or underwear? Was that budget cuts? “Sorry, Maika, it was either buy you a shirt that covers your midriff or get Danny the sound guy some Subway for lunch. Choices were made.”

David, what’s the metaphor here?

Because there is a metaphor, right?

Right?! At first, it seemed to be some kind of slut-shaming analogy, like a B-movie satire of the Puritanical condemnation of early sexual exploration.

But... then the ghost/creature thing showed up as a kid. And all the sex was so sad. Oh, more importantly, whatever personal psychoses you were working out when you wrote “then the demon turns into his mother and she dry humps him to death,” we didn’t need to see that.

David, are you aware that films typically have a climax? Oh, and that no one loves extended sequences of people driving places? The pacing early on was promising, what with the cool scene where Hugh makes Jay watch as slowwalking cootie monster comes after them. What happened? “I know what the people want! Driving! Lots of driving! Driving and sleeping!” The last dude who filmed this many teenagers sleeping is likely still in prison.

David, it’s hard to make a good horror movie. Actually, it’s hard to just make a good first movie. Hell, it’s hard to make a good movie, period! All the actors are so young, so it’s not worth piling on. Let’s just all call this a learning experience and forget this happened. Deal?

hether you like it or not, there is a perception outside of Colorado that steakhouses abound in this state. The assumption is that cattle farms abound out here, and that meat from top Angus and Kobe beef farms throughout the West is shipped to a bevy of hungry consumers at any number of steakhouses along the Front Range.

But in Boulder County, this isn’t quite reality. In fact, when I moved here and tried getting my hands on some big slab of steak, I had to ask around. More often than not, the recommendation was Boulder Chophouse.

Having been a few times, and felt sated, I returned recently to give it a proper review.

The Chophouse was already in my good favor, though, because the atmosphere is so attractive. It looks like a New York-style steakhouse from the get-go, with an ornate and vintage tile design in the mudroom entrance, and big wooden doors that shut out the cruel world outside and welcome you into a better, steakier one. There are old photos on the wall, dim lights, big leather booths, brassy and explorative jazz on the speakers, and the static gurgle of voices and laughter. The kitchen opens up to a corner of the dining room so you can look in and see the staff at work.

And then the steak came. I ordered a 31-ounce prime rib.

It was cooked medium rare. It was thick-cut and working through it was a joy. It was lean, and the outer spices were well-proportioned. Now, I like prime rib more than I like other cuts of steak, but the sirloins, filets, porterhouses and rib eyes that passed my view onto other tables certainly looked appetizing.

The other entrée on the table was a plate of crab cakes in an ancho remoulade. They were covered by breading, and packed almost entirely with crab meat on the inside. Most selections are domestic (California and Oregon), although there is a notable amount of interesting Italian and French varieties. The cocktail list is intriguing.

Making a day of meals from only tree products for Arbor Day

C

ould you make three square meals and a dessert out of only ingredients that come from trees? That’s the ridiculous question I posed to myself in honor of Arbor Day, which saunters through on April 24 in the unfortunate shadow of that fat cat Earth Day. The answer depends. For the amateur cook, like me, it was a tall task. For a professional or experienced cook, it would be a fun, if arbitrary, exercise. But there is just enough room for creativity and for error that if you have the time this weekend and don’t want to celebrate by sitting in a tree’s shade or planting a new sapling in your backyard, I recommend doing it.

Note that in absolutely no way does preparing meals from tree food support sustainable or eco-friendly practices (what Arbor Day partially stands for) — most of the ingredients I used were shipped in from around the globe, and many tree ingredients require massive quantities of water in areas they’re not getting a lot of water.

The first task was to identify what foods I had at my disposal. The rule was that as long as the fruits, seeds, barks, leaves, etc. grew on the tree, they were

fair game. This, after much thought, does not include animals or products from animals that live exclusively in trees. So no sloth steak. No koala cheese.

The products also have to come from trees, and not shrubs or bushes.

I divided my options into four categories: nuts, fruits, spices and miscellany.

I didn’t use every product from every category, and I certainly didn’t perform exhaustive research to make a comprehensive list. But, for instance, nuts included almonds, cashews, hazelnuts, macadamias, peanuts, pecans, pistachios, walnuts and more. Fruits included apples, apricots, avocados, citrus, coconuts, mangos, peaches, pears, plums and more. Spices included allspice, cloves, capers, cinnamon, bay leaves, nutmeg, juniper and star anise. And the miscellany category included carob, hearts of palm, oyster mushrooms (which grow on trees), plantains, figs, olives, sago, sassafras root and maple syrup.

The immediate challenge was figuring out how to centralize dishes. With no main protein or grain, I was working from the outside in on meals, pairing flavors and searching fervently for something to combine it all. Without meat or vegetables, stock was out and so were many soups. Without eggs, there was the maddening search to find a suitable

emulsifier. Without dairy fat, white sugar or salt, I had to find a way to make it taste good. Without leafy greens or mainline starches, it was hard to make breads and bases for each dish.

Thus, the challenge.

I immediately found a friend in the coconut. I don’t know if you can do this with every fruit, or if we’ve just been putting all our NASA money into coconut research, but there is a surprising amount of coconut products that were beneficial to a project such as this. I used coconut milk, coconut oil or coconut

flour in nearly every dish. Also beneficial was sago flour, which you have to send away for. Sago is a starch that is derived from the stems of palm trees. It’s used a lot in Southeast Asian cuisine, and when cooked into tortillas or pancakes, it’s sort of grainy and tasteless.

baking spices; fruit smoothie Off to a bad start. Pancakes need a delicate balance of flour and egg in order to properly cook and fluff. Well, when you don’t have common flours, eggs (or baking powder), it’s a crapshoot what kind of pancakes are going to come out.

Instead of wheat flour, I used coconut flour and instead of eggs, I used apple sauce. It was a challenge to get the consistency right. Some mixture of coconut flour, apple sauce, solid coconut oil and coconut milk eventually resulted in a batter that tasted fantastic, but was hard to cook on the griddle. When the sides browned, the middle did not rise. There was too much apple sauce, and it just needed a damn egg. I did look outside for robin’s eggs, which I would have counted due to its resourcesfulness, but had no luck.

The mashed plantains were a much greater success. I made two batches, one with extra ripe plantains, one with unripe plantains. The ripened ones were much sweeter and softer, and caramelized more after throwing them, halved, in the oven on medium heat for a half hour. I put cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg on them before cooking, and topped them off after mashing with the same spices and a drizzle of maple syrup.

The smoothie was a smoothie. Pick any fruit that grows on trees, throw it in with homemade coconut milk ice cream or not, or ice, and have a field day.

There was much improvement at lunch. I cooked two flatbread bases, one with coconut flour and one with sago flour (again using apple sauce and coconut milk), and the coconut flour just would not solidify. The sago was a bit better, and crisped on the edges, making a really nice char to go with the tart and savory flavors on the flatbread. I lathered the breads with fig preserves. I also halved two champagne mangos, peeled off the skin like an avocado and grilled them on a cast-iron stove-top grill.

Fantastic.

I threw some bay leaves on for aromatics and cracked some fresh black and pink peppercorns and threw it back in the oven. Ten minutes later, I took it out, drizzled some light and spicy Tuscan olive oil over the top, removed the bay leaves, and had a nice little dish. The crust was still not crispy, and the coconut flour crust was a bit too mealy. In short, it tasted like tree pizza.

There was a thought here to make

root beer, which you can do by steeping dried sassafras roots and adding in treebased spices, but time was an issue. The trail mix I planned was dried apricot and mango, almonds, pistachios, walnuts and carob chips, but I’ll trust Boulder to make their own trail mix — that’d be like giving Tiger Woods pointers on his short game.

Dinner

Mushroom tacos with hearts of palm, apple and caper slaw; coconut milk horchata Tortillas were by far the hardest product to make. As I went to roll out a dough of coconut flour, apple sauce and coconut oil, the whole thing just crumbled apart. Sago was the same way. I ended up matting a bunch of the dry dough in my hand to a thin consistency, throwing it down on the griddle and closing it shut. The resulting tortilla did not fold, but I used it as a base on which to throw the taco toppings.

Knowing this would be tough, I bought flour tortillas from the store for $1.99 and took the easy way out on this.

But the fixin’s were all-tree. I sautéed oyster mushrooms in homemade nocino, a barrel-aged amaro made from unripe walnuts and other spices (I used star anise and juniper). On top of that, I placed peeled hearts of palm (which were a revelation in this exercise), a stripped gala apple, sliced black olives, capers and sliced almonds. Then I scooped out a dollop of avocado and the whole thing was pretty decent for a tree taco.

The horchata was a little thin (as there was no rice in it) but I basically just combined coconut milk, water, a dash of maple syrup, cinnamon and nutmeg.

Dessert

Amaretti cookie sandwich with coconut milk ice cream; nocino I whipped up a quick batch of amaretti — sliced almonds, almond extract, apple sauce replacing egg whites, and a dash of maple syrup to replace the sugar.

They came out like little spiky cookies, remarkably light and even though a little under-sweetened, delicious. I scooped some store-bought coconut ice cream between two cookies (you can make coconut milk ice cream at home but I had other stories to write this week, alright?).

Finishing with sips from the walnut liquor, I debated my future as an arbortarian. But I looked at the dishes, looked at my grocery bill, and decided arborphile is good enough for me.

Dear WTR: Condoms — when used consistently and correctly — greatly reduce your risk of acquiring a sexually transmitted infection. They provide excellent protection against HIV infection, gonorrhea and chlamydia (diseases spread by genital secretions); they’re slightly less effective at protecting you against herpes, HPV and syphilis (diseases spread by skin-toskin contact). The condom-free sex you’re currently having with your fuck buddy can be regarded as risk-free because you’ve both been tested, you’re both STI-free and you’re both not having sex with other people. But some risk will creep into your condom-free sex after you start having sex with other people, WTR — even if you’re using condoms. Your risk of getting an STI will be much, much lower if you use condoms — consistently and correctly — with those other partners, but sex with other partners will introduce some risk.

There were booths of growers, investors, CO2 extractors, herbalists, arborists, mechanical trimmers, plant systems, branding companies, bakers, health products, ointments, lotions, salves, cleaning products, genetics, clothing, social media sites, magazines, even a company offering canine protection.

Every aspect of cannabis culture was on display. Some of the products, like stylish bags and clothes made from hemp, wouldn’t look out of place in any high-end tourist outlet. Still, the ambience reeked of the counter culture from whence NORML and the legalization movement came.

Watching Cup antics on television news probably won’t do much to convince the more than 40 percent of Americans who still oppose legalization to change their minds about marijuana users.

There are plenty of people, myself included, who would like to see the image people have of marijuana users move beyond Cheech and Chong comedy sketches, stoner movies and dumbeddown TV characters. The National Cannabis Industry Association, which is lobbying Congress on medical marijuana and banking bills in committee, last

month fired Tommy Chong as a celebrity activist for this very reason.

But in the long run, as we have with alcohol, we’ll have to get used to the extremes. Events like last year’s Classically Cannabis series, which paired marijuana with chamber music, certainly helped people see this drug, and its users, in a different light. The Drug Policy Alliance recently released a series of photos through a Creative Commons license that depicts people using cannabis in their homes. Attractive displays of marijuana merchandise — potholders, mugs, cookbooks, flasks, tote bags, coasters and Blundt Cakes — are now requisite in every store on the Pearl Street Mall right alongside the CU and state logo merch.

The Boulder campus was open Monday on April 20 for the first time in three years, and more than 125,000 people attended the Cup and other 4/20 events. Denver police issued 160 potrelated tickets over the weekend, mostly for public-consumption violations.

But perhaps the most positive sign of change came on Sunday night, when @ DenverPolice tweeted this message about the coming 4/20 celebration: “We see you rollin, but we ain’t hatin’ HAHA… Seriously though, #Denver, please remember to #ConsumeResponsibly this 4/20 weekend.”

The reference is to a song by rapper Chamillionaire. But what came through was the attitude: Friendly, not confrontational. And that pretty much defines the weekend of the biggest marijuana party in the world 2015.

Longtime anchor of NBC Nightly News Brian Williams wants his job back — the job he lost, as you might recall, when the facts emerged from the fiction of some of his conflict reporting. After three months off-air and banned from speaking publicly, he’s started to express, through anonymous friends and even his daughter, who spoke about the issue to CNN, his growing unhappiness with NBC’s failure to invite him back on air, or even send a save-the-date card to announce the impending event.

Lester Holt has been at the anchor desk since Williams’ departure. Ratings are down, and Williams has been spotted with a puppy in New York City. That’s not a joke. He’s been out with his wife, daughter and a new dog — a move a USA Today media columnist told CNN is a clear attempt at David Shankbone via Wikimedia commons image rehab. If the dog trusts this guy, we can too, right? Wrong.

Results of NBC’s internal investigation of Williams and how often his facts were far from straight are still pending.

Noble Energy has agreed to pay $8.95 million in penalties and funding for environmental mitigation projects along the Front Range after several Noble facilities were found to be out of compliance for volatile organic compound emissions in 2012. Noble has also agreed to systemwide upgrades and to pay for additional projects to reduce emissions — and will be self-inspectBrian Williams ing their own facilities moving forward in an effort to maintain compliance. They’d likely have to, since the state’s paltry number of inspectors are hard-pressed to make it to the state’s 52,000 wells that are due to be inspected each year. Most get looked at once every four years or so.

But OK, let’s just say they really will be inspecting down to every detail of the new air quality emission standards approved in 2014, which are often touted as some of the toughest in the country. Dr. Larry Wolk, executive director and chief medical officer at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, pointed out in a press release that the VOC emissions for which Noble is being penalized pre-date the 2014 air quality emissions rules that address volatile organic compounds from storage tanks — and that Noble was “instrumental” in crafting those new policies, reached in agreement with the state, industry and environmental representatives.

Sounds a bit like letting children set their own bed times and determine their own daily allotment of television and candy. What could go wrong?

We don’t trust this either The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s efforts to reduce air pollution from oil and gas activities earned it one of seven of the 2015 Clean Air Excellence Awards given by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

We’d really like to be happy about that — the award seeks out efforts that reduce air pollution in innovative and sustainable ways and “provide a model for others to follow,” according to the EPA website. And maybe the efforts were a step in the right direction. The EPA’s award list states that Colorado’s rules “further minimize air quality impacts associated with oil and gas development” and address ozone formation, methane emissions and include a leak detection and repair program using infrared cameras to detect emissions and are estimated to reduce methane emissions by 60,000 tons and volatile organic compound emissions by 92,000 tons each year. That’s great.

But a May 2012 study on air quality along the Front Range estimated that oil and gas operations were leaking 19.3 tons of methane every hour, or 463.2 tons per day.

We’re not great at math, but we’ll say a reduction of 60,000 tons is a nice step, but probably only a third of the problem.

And a study of oil and gas operations in the Uinta Basin in Utah found a single dehydrator can emit 30,000 tons of volatile organic compounds each year. So again, 92,000 tons may not take more than a dent out of the issue.
