Panama Papers reveal scandalous hypocrisy

t’s said that there’s nothing more vicious than a wild animal that’s cornered, but I’d add that there’s nothing more devious than a top corporate or political official caught in a scandalous hypocrisy.

Witness the huge menagerie of political critters who’ve recently been backed into a corner by the “Panama Papers.” This is a trove of thousands of internet documents leaked to global media outlets, revealing that assorted

billionaires, rich celebrities, corporate chieftains and, yes, pious public officials have been hiding their wealth and dodging the taxes they owe by stashing their cash in foreign tax havens. Of course, we’ve known for a while that tax dodging is a common plutocratic scam, but the details from the leaked files of an obscure Panamanian law firm named Mossack Fonseca now gives us names to shame.

One is David Cameron, the ardently conservative prime minister of Britain, who has loudly declaimed tax sneaks in public. But ­— oops! — now we learn that his own super-wealthy father was a Mossack Fonseca client, and that David himself has profited from the stealth wealth he inherited from the elder Cameron’s secret stash.

trying to “tax anyone who [wants] to pass on their home to their children.”

Uh-uh, David, we merely want to tax those who try to pass-off tax frauds on the public.

One of Cameron’s partisans even claimed that critics “hate anybody who has a hint of wealth in them.” No, it’s the gross, self-serving hypocrisy of the elites that people hate. Yet now, doubling down on their hypocrisy, Cameron & Company have announced that they’ll host an anticorruption summit meeting to address the problem of offshore tax evaders! As Lily Tomlin says: “No matter how cynical you get, it’s impossible to keep up.”

C

onnecting dots is generally considered to be a child’s game. But when applied to politics and all of its bedfellows who usually come out at night when the sun isn’t shining, it is far from child’s play. What is going on in Colorado, both out in the open and behind closed doors at the higher, indeed the highest, levels of state government, is stomach churning.

I’ve been at the forefront of the fracking issue since late 2011 when fracking for oil and gas was barreling down on Longmont (pun intended) with only a month to stop an inevitable train wreck.

Permission would have been granted by the Planning and Zoning Commission with the public essentially knowing nothing until the first rig went up. Even council members (some, but perhaps not all) would have been unaware.

The people of Longmont essentially said “hold your horses; we want a closer look at this.” Longer story short, Longmont voters passed a charter amendment that banned fracking and the disposal of its waste products in November 2012 with a 60-40 percent mandate. The oil and gas industry sued Longmont and the state quickly joined in on the bullying under Governor Hickenlooper’s orders.

While the ongoing battle continued to play out at the ballot box in surrounding communities, state representatives, Mike Foote and Jonathan Singer, and state senator, Matt Jones, have not only listened to their constituents but also have gone to bat for all of the folks who are a far cry from powerful and obscenely wealthy special interests.

Backroom discussions, phone calls, after hour drinks, etc. — all not open to public scrutiny — likely play a big part in thwarting every bill brought forward that is connected to oil and gas, even those that do not say oil and gas overtly.

(Watch for coming additional hits on citizen democracy on November’s ballot.)

Those [bills] that originate in the Senate never make it out of committee.

Those originating in the House, usually make it out of committee and some find their way to the Senate — where, of course, they are killed.

In spite of the state constitution and previous court rulings (specifically Bowen/Edwards in 1992, which does not give blanket preemption to the state over oil and gas control as the industry 6 April 21, 2016

insists), facts are relentlessly distorted and the propaganda spews forth from Republicans as well as a few Democrats like the dirty energy from wells. We are deafened with lies and statements deliberately taken out of context that paint the legal environment with black oil and toxic methane emissions. Those are hard to see on the canvass; look for the brown cloud and the infrared camera fumes that are painted in gray tones. All accomplished without a second’s chagrin and likely high fives in the hallways of the people’s building.

Recent examples are Representative Mike Foote’s HB 16-1355, which sought to grant oil and gas zoning authority to local governments, as is the case with every other business and industry. Amended to nearly meaningless on the day of the vote, it still couldn’t pass the House. And you can thank Democrats Ed Vigil and Paul Rosenthal for the deciding votes.

Senator Matt Jones’ bill (SB 16-129) that changed one word — “foster” oil and gas development to “administer” oil and gas development, seeking to level the playing field somewhat — went to the Senate “kill committee” where it was assassinated.

Representative Joe Salazar’s HB 16-1310 would hold oil and gas companies and operators liable if their activities cause an earthquake that results in harm to an individual or to property. Fair?

Right. Common sense? Right. But you guessed it. Colorado Public Radio reported that our dear Governor Hickenlooper said he would not sign this bill, speaking at an American Petroleum Institute luncheon — naturally.

Coloradans who still believe that the state government will protect their health, safety, welfare and property values need a stiff cup of espresso each and every morning to help them accept the truth.

If we want change, if we want our health and safety protected, we will have to do it ourselves. “Yes for Health and Safety over Fracking,” (yesforhealthandsafety.org) the issue committee of Coloradans Resisting Extreme Energy Development, will soon be on the streets asking for your signature on state petitions that will amend Colorado’s constitution to guarantee our health and safety.

guest column ColoradoCare: You can handle the truth

he current healthcare system has all the hallmarks of an abusive relationship. Well, it’s what we know. Maybe it’ll change. It would be hard to leave.

Consider these symptoms. In most local markets, private hospital providers are able to act as a quasi-monopoly.

Absent real market forces, pricing becomes arbitrary, capricious and even whimsical. The uninsured hospital patient is confronted with a bloated sticker price. No visibility. No effective patient bargaining advocate. No explanation. Visa or Master Card?

Private insurance companies then feed from their own monopolistic trough. They price to their own captive market. Their power to negotiate a pricing discount benefits their own bottom line, not the patient. There is zero incentive by them to hold down costs as they are paid on a fixed percentage of the claims they administer.

UnitedHealthcare CEO Stephen Hemsley took home over $62 million in 2014 alone. Shame. That’s far more than friction in the system. That’s strip-mining it.

No wonder many Colorado patients are left naked in the wind. Don’t confuse coverage availability with affordability. Many so-called policies won’t even kick in before a $6,000 deductible.

That number might as well be infinity

for many patients.

Colorado residents often follow that familiar national pattern: Pray that no medical emergency befalls them, hope to navigate their way through the system, then wait until they finally achieve the eureka moment with the arrival of that Medicare card on their 65th birthday. Facts are facts, and the sad fact is 62 percent of personal bankruptcies are the result of medical expenses.

Even more alarming, 78 percent of those had some form of health insurance.

The current health care system is a creature of, by and for the various monied interests. Check it out. Track how the private insurance lobbies worked the Colorado legislature to torpedo a low-cost universal plan. Of course they did. Their very territory was threatened.

No lobby for us patients, though. As George Carlin would have said, “It’s a big club and you ain’t in it.”

Maybe it’s time to start a new club.

Federal law invites that. Each state is given the opportunity to opt out of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) if it can innovate its own plan that surpasses the goals of the federal system.

A

university should be a critic and conscience of society, according to an old-fashioned view. There are lofty goals on campus plaques and universities should certainly provide a unique space for dissident views.

Nevertheless, if you scratch the surface, you realize that universities are increasingly knowledge factories subordinate to corporate America.

Progressive student activists challenge universities to live up to their ideals. United Students Against Sweatshops (USAS) is a nationwide, grassroots group organizing solidarity with workers who face grievous conditions locally and abroad.

They have focused their activism on the reckless business practices of university-branded sports apparel brands. As students attending colleges and universities with multimillion-dollar apparel programs, USAS has conducted campaigns to force apparel brands like Nike to respect workers rights. University of Colorado has a huge contract with Nike.

On April 5, the CU Boulder chapter of USAS hosted a talk by Noi Supalai, former union president and Nike factory worker from Thailand. She described her struggles while working

Accompanied by a volunteer translator, Supalai explained that after the 2008 world economic meltdown, these brands began to order less clothing from Eagle Speed.

Supalai said that, “it was at that point that Nike took advantage of the situation and made a deal with the factory trying to order in higher quantity, and they pressured for greatest quality, and we had to produce it within a shorter time frame and in lower costs.”

Supalai said that Nike threatened to terminate Eagle Speed’s contract if they didn’t agree to the new conditions.

The 2,000 Eagle Speed workers were unable to keep up with the high demand. As a result, Nike placed a fine on the factory and refused to pay for any of the clothing produced.

The workday was elongated from 8 a.m. to midnight or 1 a.m.

Management placed devices on their bodies to track their working pace to ensure consistency. The workers didn’t get paid for two months and couldn’t even go home.

Their special interests — the very ones representing such crushing overhead in today’s system — are threatened.

The referendum this November shall awaken the Beast. The matter goes directly to the people. That’s good. The public would be well served by the ensuing debate. Priorities will be evaluated. Past inertia will be challenged.

Truths will be flushed out.

That truth might even lead to Colorado becoming the very model for a bottoms-up national healthcare transformation.

on strike. When Supalai and 24 of her fellow co-workers attempted to meet with Eagle Speed management, they were directed to a room where they were immediately locked up.

She said Eagle Speed’s response when questioned about the detention was, “You are too radical, stirring up workers.”

The Eagle Speed workers contacted the Thai government’s Department of Labor Protection who refused to help them. The workers directly contacted Nike and got the run-around.

Finally, they reached out to the Workers Rights Consortium (WRC), an independent labor rights monitoring organization.

Within one week, the WRC was able to reach an arrangement with Eagle Speed that successfully allowed former workers to go back to work with a promise that they wouldn’t be discriminated against and that those who wished to resign would be granted full compensation.

The WRC attempts to combat sweatshops around the globe and protect the rights of workers who make apparel and other products. It was founded in 2000 by university administrators, labor rights experts and student activists. The group’s primary focus is the labor practices of factories that make university-related apparel.

The WRC conducts independent, in-depth investigations; issues public reports on factories producing for major brands; and aids workers at these factories in their efforts to end labor abuses and defend their workplace rights.

Nearly 200 schools are WRC affiliates. CU is one of them. For many years, WRC and Nike have had a reasonably cooperative relationship.

However, the situation changed recently. Late last year, workers at a Nike supplier’s factory in Vietnam held a pair of strikes over working conditions. The WRC wanted to inspect the factory but Nike stopped them.

WRC director Scott Nova was “surprised and concerned” by this change.

He said, “What it boils down to is Nike prefers not to be accountable to an independent investigative body.

They want to police the working conditions themselves. The reason there are mandatory standards is it’s not prudent to allow companies to police themselves.”

Nike has a lengthy history dealing with labor watchdogs and student activists. In the 1990s, the company was embarrassed over a number of sweatshop scandals. Since then, Nike Boulder Weekly

has polished its pubic image and has changed its behavior.

The USAS is leading a national campaign to force Nike to go back to allowing WRC to inspect factories producing Nike shoes, clothes and athletic equipment. The company is violating codes of conduct in contracts with many schools.

Recently, hundreds of college faculty members around the country signed onto a letter criticizing Nike for not

assisting the WRC in investigating the situation at the Vietnamese factory.

The president of Rutgers University, Robert Barchi, said that if Nike didn’t help the WRC access the Vietnamese factory, the company would be taking “a step backward” on its labor rights record. “Rutgers feels that it is essential that all companies producing Rutgers-branded products not only adhere to all applicable labor codes of conduct but also be perceived

as maintaining the highest standards of labor rights,” Barchi wrote.

They provide abundant access to the same kind of terrain and aesthetic experiences.

Most mountain bikers are very courteous and respectful of other trail users. A number of mountain bikers like to travel at high speeds that can be startling to hikers, horseback riders, other trail users and wildlife. Bikes often cause severe erosion of trails.

There are often insufficient funds to repair and maintain existing mountain bike trails. They are, by their very nature, mechanized means of travel, and incompatible with the concept and implementation of the Wilderness Act. A recent unscientific poll in the Denver Post showed a slight majority that wanted wilderness areas to allow bikes. It would appear these proponents are well organized.

Just a note for Mr. Danish in response to his column [Re: “The Donald (a whining loser) and the caucuses,” April 14] on Donald Trump getting ripped off for Colorado delegates: Whatever you said sounds like bullshit to me. You don’t get delegates before the popular vote! Delegates should be apportioned after the people have voted. If Trump gets 52 percent of the vote he should get 52 percent of the delegates. And he gets to pick who they are after the vote.

All that rigmarole you wrote about caucuses, county assemblies, congressional districts, state conventions, blah, blah, is exactly how the system is rigged. I’m no Trump supporter, but support Bernie Sanders who is getting screwed in similar fashion with the Democratic Party “super-delegates.”

The times they are a-changing, dude.

Sanders and Trump are exposing the corruption in our political system. Your remarks, Mr. Danish, I repeat, are bullshit.

I am a mountain biker, as are many Sierra Club members. We can and do enjoy thousands of miles of dirt roads and trails on local public lands, and millions of miles nationally. Wilderness is a very small percentage of public land. It is critical wildlife habitat, often providing complete ecosystems where wildlife enjoys very rare undisturbed places; though hunting is allowed.

Wilderness is also the “untrammeled” source of clean air and clean water for everyone. The Wilderness Act expressly omits all mechanized recreation. It is one of the few places where humans can also partake of a slower pace of motion that is also far less likely to interfere with wildlife. Wilderness trails are often remote, and it is difficult to maintain these trails with a minimum of technology.

Some mountain biking organizations are advocating for altering or amending the Wilderness Act to allow mountain biking. They haven’t succeeded in Congress thus far. They have also opposed the creation of new wilderness areas in some parts of the U.S. In most cases, compromises have been reached that maintain or create bike access adjacent to new wilderness to accommodate bikers. Mountain bikes are allowed on most National Forest lands and many state parks and local

The review of the film Catching the Sun [Re: “Energy Policy is social policy,” April 14] heartened me about efforts to transform our energy system to achieve a green economy. It’s a timely movie to be viewed as we celebrate Earth Day. It’s good for us to keep a positive outlook as we approach the issue of climate change and work to achieve a sustainable planet.

It is encouraging that members from both sides of the aisle are coming together in the form of the bipartisan Climate Solutions Caucus in the House. The purpose of the new caucus, which will be co-chaired by Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-FL) and Rep. Ted Deutch (D-FL), is to “explore policy options that address the impacts, causes, and challenges of our changing climate,” according to a document filed with the Committee on House Administration.

Our good deed for Earth Day can be to contact our Senators Cory Gardner and Michael Bennet and Representative Jared Polis to let them know that we need Congress to pass legislation that puts a steadily rising fee on carbon, and then return that revenue back to households.

Republicans insult Aurora theater massacre families

Recently, Colorado Senate Republicans voted to repeal a bill prohibiting the possession of large-capacity ammunition magazines insulted the families and victims of the Aurora Movie Theater Massacre and Columbine. I testified against this absurd and dangerous bill, and I watched in disbelief and disgust as Republicans voted along straight party lines in order to repeal

the bill prohibiting large-capacity ammunition in Colorado.

Three Republican Senators, Ray Scott, Jerry Sonnenberg and Owen Hill refused to do their jobs and protect the citizens of Colorado.

Democratic Senator Matt Jones of Boulder voted against the bill along with Democratic Senator Ulibarri.

This despicable bill was sponsored by Republican senator Vicki Marble. This debacle occurred after one family

member after another testified about the slaughter of family members at the hands of a mass murderer using largecapacity ammunition magazines at Columbine and Aurora.

These Colorado Republicans are complicit in murder of Colorado citizens along with the lobbyists from the NRA and Rocky Mountain Gun Owners. It is past time to vote all Republicans out of office.

Earth Day, every day

Earth Day — a nice day to recognize, appreciate and extol our home planet. Any of us who pay attention to the changes in our earth’s climate, including the last two years being the hottest on record, know that we need to not only celebrate the earth on this day, but fight for it every day of the year.

Will we be able to wean ourselves from consuming fossil fuels so we can reduce our outpouring of carbon, methane and other greenhouse gases?

There’s a plan articulated by the Citizens’ Climate Lobby that would greatly help this problem. A steadily rising fee would be assessed at the sources of fossil fuels. The fees would be collected and returned to all U.S. citizens, making it a revenue neutral system. As a result of this, new sustainable and renewable energy sources would become more competitive. It wouldn’t hurt, of course, to remove some of the outrageous government subsidies and tax advantages that fossil fuel companies receive from the U.S. The revenue neutral system proposed by the Citizens’ Climate Lobby would reduce carbon levels 50 percent below 1990 levels in just 20 years, according to the Regional Economic Models, Inc. (REMI) study. We need to take significant and dramatic action to stem the tide of rising carbon levels and worldwide temperatures. Tell Senator Gardner, Senator Bennet, and Congressman Polis to support a revenue-neutral carbon tax. We can all make Earth Day pledges to change our lifestyles to consume less and conserve more, but we need a systematic, country-wide system like the one proposed

olorado voters could see two constitutional amendment initiatives on the November ballot that, if passed, would limit oil and gas development near populated areas and would give local governments more authority over such developments. The initiatives are sponsored by Coloradans Resisting Extreme Energy Development (CREED), a Boulder-based grass-roots organization with board members from Boulder, Denver and Durango.

The art of geology

Standing apart from the crowd is Joshua Goss, a geologist by education but a blacksmith by trade, who makes geologic art in his metal shop in Denver.

His sculptures, currently on exhibition in his show UPlift! at The Dairy Arts Center, create snapshots of the geologic process, capturing the processes of time, heat and pressure.

Inside his studio, Goss layers materials from the earth — iron, bronze, steel and thermoform plastic. He heats them to high temperatures and compresses them horizontally with a hydraulic press, causing the layers to bond much like the process of geological deposition.

After the layers mold together, Goss cuts into the straight layers, introducing fault lines into the block of metal and plastic. To recreate the process of orogeny — a scientific term for mountain building — Goss then reheats and compresses the piece, causing uplift and ductile distortion.

At this point, Goss has created a blackened and charred block of metal that is shredded, ripped and distorted. Goss says this in-between state makes him

ocated at the nexus of the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains, Boulder’s topography is the ultimate geologic juxtaposition. The change of slope where the flat lands meet the Front Range offers a captivating contrast, but is also a source of some controversy. While geologists agree about the events that caused the initial uplift in Colorado’s continental crust, they disagree about the events that created the mountains that exist today.

The process spans millions of years with no human record to help geologists construct their theories.

Instead, they must study the earth in hopes of uncovering the history captured in the rocks.

Goss begins to cut the mutated block apart and then introduces erosive processes as he soaks each piece in an acid bath for several days, cleaning and adding luster to the metal. Having created individual pieces of a greater puzzle, Goss sets to rearrange them into a compelling visual story.

“What would take millions of years to make in nature, you are seeing happen right before your eyes,” Goss says. “It kind of puts the geological time scale in a human perspective, which is one of my goals in making this.”

The Rockies formed 70 million years ago as inward moving tectonic pressure at both coasts pushed up slabs of earth at weak areas in the middle of the continental crust, only to be covered with debris in the following millions of years. But scientists disagree about whether the Rockies that exist today are the result of a secondary uplift event or a series of massive erosion events caused by cooling climates.

FEDERAL DROUGHT RESILIENCE PLAN SPREADS LESSONS FROM COLORADO

In March 2016, the Obama administration released another piece of its plan to mitigate the impacts of climate change. The Long-term Drought Resilience Plan outlines specific goals that a partnership between federal agencies will try to reach in the coming years. These goals range from improving how technology can increase the efficiency of irrigation to implementing market-based approaches to conserve water.

Ruth Quade, water conservation coordinator for the City of Greeley, says the plan has admirable goals, especially for places in the Midwest that might be unprepared for tough drought conditions. In Colorado though, she says, essentially all of the goals in the plan are old news. After the severe drought of 2002, which caught many water managers by surprise, Quade says Colorado towns got wise. They started to pay attention to how technologies like efficient irrigation heads and smartphone apps could help make it easier for residents and businesses to conserve water. They also started to pay closer attention to the kinds of information that the plan aims to make more available, including weather outlooks and what other water managers are doing.

So while the federal action plan may not revolutionize water management in Colorado, it might help bring the rest of the country up to speed.

“They’d come in on [Active at Altitude trail running] camps and they’d be additional coaches, going on runs — they really helped promote trail running, which was important to me,” Chiplin says. “Having fallen in love with trial running, I wanted to encourage people to do it because it’s such an incredible experience. I got in a conversation with Nancy one day and she said, ‘I think trail running has gotten to the point where it could have its own conference.’”

Chiplin says he kept the idea of a trail running conference on the back burner. The idea surfaced again during a meeting with a surgeon and runner from Estes Park who wondered aloud to Chiplin how to draw more athletes to Estes Park. Checking the back burner, Chiplin suggested a trail running conference.

“A few months later I’m at the medical center (in Estes Park) talking about a trail running conference — how do we get this going, and sharing ideas with a group of interested people,” he says. “At end they said, ‘Terry, we’d like you to organize it.’ I had never organized a conference before but I was like, shoot other people can do it, I’m sure I can.”

The first U.S. Trail Running Conference took place in June 2013 with 100 people attending the two-day event. It has since grown to a three-day event that happens in the fall, with the first two-and-a-half days focused on sessions for trail race directors. These sessions cover topics to help directors hold successful races that are also environmentally aware.

This year’s conference will begin on Sept. 28 and through Oct. 1. There will be a Trail Running Film Festival at the Reel Mountain Theater in downtown Estes Park, with the Estes Trail Ascent closing the conference out. The race covers nearly 6 miles of rocky terrain and 1,800 feet of elevation gain.

To hear Chiplin speak of the conference — of his business, of his passion for running — it would seem trail running is a religious experience for him, and he is its evangelist. His delight is infectious, his mere presence enough to make you hit the trail right then and there, even if you’ve never been a serious runner before.

“We get ideas in our minds and even though they might not be true, we believe them to be true,” Chiplin says.

“I’d love to open people’s eyes that trail running is for everybody. You get to run in beautiful places and connect with nature in a way you never could on a

road run. To feel trails that are smooth, some have rocks and roots and different angles. For me, it’s much like going back to running like our ancestors. Running on animal trails. Doing it to survive. At the same time, they get to connect with nature, and I think that’s a big part of the problem with society is that we see ourselves as separate from nature. If we put concrete and tarmack over it, this is our world. This is a great way of reconnecting with who we are, with what’s in our hearts.”

Chiplin has placed those positive vibes into everything he’s done, including his newest ventures through Active at Altitude.

With help from professional athlete Melodie Fairchild, Chiplin has just launched his first running app, activacuity, a guided imagery program.

The app is divided into segments, programs and sessions. Each segment is centered on a specific aspect that sports psychologists (as well as Chiplin’s own research with Fairchild) has shown to be a critical area of mental preparation for athletes. Each segment has a maximum of 10 programs and each program has up to five sessions. The goal of the app is to create positive athletic experiences with increased confidence, enhanced focus and elevated performance.

Active at Altitude is also about to launch the Positive Running Movement, a worldwide community of runners that support each other positively. The movement will include a newsletter with tips, techniques and stories of positivity; positive race workshops at selected races and the ability to schedule sessions with positive running coaches.

For Chiplin, the idea is simple: everybody is a runner. And that’s more than just his message — it’s the way he lives his life. Through running, Chiplin was able to overcome depression, low self-esteem and drug addiction. Because of this, his life’s work is to show others their goals are more than dreams.

Especially for women.

“There’s this notion or this ideal that you’re only a runner if you can run at this kind of speed and if you can’t, you’re not a runner,” Chiplin says.

“That’s the biggest thing I hear, especially from women. One of my goals is to open the eyes, especially of women, to the potential they have inside.

“We believe things to be true about ourselves, but they’re not. Someone has said something, maybe a peer, a parent, teachers: ‘You’ll never be a runner,” whatever the words are. We internalize it and repeat and repeat it until we believe. But I believe everybody is a runner.”

Before he comes to Colorado, Joey Vega talks about a life of comedy that started on a dare

his might be a stretch, but if you get right down to it, Joey Vega owes his 30-year career in comedy to a nightclub bouncer in New York City.

See, if that bouncer had let Vega and his pals in the club that night back in 1980, the group wouldn’t have gone to a comedy club instead — and not just any comedy club. That night they went to the Improv in Hell’s Kitchen, the original site of the club that ega V would become a national franchise and transform the American comedy landscape.

And if you know jack about stand-up, you know everybody who was anybody in comedy in the ’70s and ’80s played the Improv in New York. Legend has it Lily Tomlin commandeered a parked limousine just so she could make a grand entrance to meet with Budd Friedman, owner of the Improv. Jay Leno is said to have driven between Boston and New York every week (and even slept in the parking lot) just for the chance to take the stage. Andy Kaufman, Freddie Prinze, Milton Berle, George Burns, Bette Midler, Larry David, Richard Lewis, Rodney Dangerfield... all the greats were there at one time or another.

And back in the summer of 1980, so was Joey Vega. But then he was just a 27-year-old admitting clerk at a hospital, out for a night with his buddies. He realized that night, though, that he loved the idea of performing comedy — and his friends egged him on.

“My friends were like, ‘You could do that, you do that all the time,’” Vega says. “I was always very shy, so I never thought I could get on stage and talk to people. But they dared me to do it, and a couple months later I was back.”

So maybe Vega owes his career to the dare and the nightclub bouncer — but back to the story.

He says he spent about a month writing “the stupidest jokes ever,” but

host at the Improv before ever taking the stage, who Vega credits as his first real friend at the Improv.

“He was just Keenan Wayans back then,” Vega says. “[One night] he said, ‘You know, you’re a funny guy...’ This was after I went on and died completely. Not one laugh. He came up and said, ‘Don’t stop. You’re a funny guy, and it’s nice to see a Latino up there.’”

There weren’t a lot of Latinos doing comedy back then, and Courtesy of Joey Vega the biggest of them all, Freddie Prinze, shot himself in 1977 after an increasingly difficult struggle with depression. Despite the novelty, the Puerto Ricanborn Vega didn’t rely on his ethnicity to elicit laughs, because just like there weren’t many Latinos on the stage, there weren’t many Latinos in the audience then, either. So Vega talked about everyday life, about relationships, and occasionally he would insert “a little bit of Latino in it.” He made his work accessible to all people, regardless of ethnicity or socioeconomic background. He wrote for movies as well, such as the surprisingly serious Chris Rock flick, I Think I Love My Wife, and the star-loaded What to Expect When You’re Expecting.

He became a staff writer for George Lopez’s late night talk show, Lopez Tonight.

But through the acting and writing, Vega’s passion remained focused on live performance. He’s continued to focus on stand-up, performing Madison Square Garden and notably opening for friend and salsa singer Marc Anthony for the past 16 years.

And like any master of their trade, as someone who has stuck comedy out for more than 30 years, Vega’s watched the profession change. He laments the loss of storytelling in favor of fast jokes that fit with today’s Vine video/140-character culture.

With that culture, Vega says he sees up-and-comers shunning the long path to success — a path Vega trudged alongside other comedians who took years to find their place — and subsequently burning out quickly because they are unprepared for the rigors of show business.

He also begrudges the rise of “politically correct” culture.

“It annoys me that if I talk about bullying and it’s not what you think bullying is, you don’t want to laugh and you get mad. People go into shows with preconceived notions to see how this guy’s gonna offend me,” Vega says. “Go in there with an open mind. You don’t have to agree with what I say, but did you laugh before you went, ‘Ow’? I don’t like to have kids on planes; I’d rather have snakes on planes. Is that hurting anybody? It’s just a joke. It’s just a flat-out joke.”

Despite the changes he’s seen, Vega loves what he does.

“I want to emphasize it’s a very difficult job, but it’s very rewarding in the sense that maybe every comedian needs to be accepted, maybe they lacked something in their life, something traumatic happened,” Vega says.

“Making people laugh and be in control... When I go up in front of 15,000 people, I remind them about Marc Anthony, but then I go back into my material and in a sense I’m in control.”

He pauses for a beat.

“Maybe I was an outsider or something. Wow. I think I just psychoanalyzed myself.”

Fossil fuel divestment is a Wikimedia Commons/ Brylie Oxley major issue around Boulder, and 350 Colorado is giving Boulderites a chance to learn more about how they can do their part. The nonprofit addresses global climate change through grassroots events like this one. Attendees will hear live music from experimental blues band Banshee Tree, eat food by Boulder Valley School District’s Munchie Machine and engage with local environmental activists. The event will promote local green businesses and provide workshops about everything from how to make small, environmentally friendly changes in your life to how to go completely off the grid.

Mornings Before the train screamed him through tunnels to his windowless office, the idiots he had to “sir,” my father needed a space without us, so in a crack of light from the bathroom, he dressed, held his shoes by two fingers, and left us sleeping. That walk to the diner, the last stars fading out, the sky lightening from black to blue to white, was his time. He walked in all weather, let each season touch him all over, lifted his face to rain and sun. He liked to watch the old houses stir awake and nod to the woman in her slippers on 27th, smoking as she strolled her little mutt.

To step back, smooth as Fred Astaire, from the paperboy’s wild toss.

Milk bottles sweated on doorsteps, sweet cream on top, and once, he lifted a quart from its wire basket, drank it down beneath our neighbor’s winking porch light, and left the empty on the stoop.

‘The Jungle Book’ carries too much weight

he Jungle Book is director Jon Favreau’s “live-action” — if you count an entirely CGI environment with almost entirely CGI characters to be “live-action” — update of the classic Disney tale. A young boy, Mowgli (Neel Sethi) is protected by a panther, Bagheera (Ben Kingsley); semiraised by a wolf, Raksha (Lupita Nyong’o); befriends a bear, Baloo (Bill Murray); kinda-almost-sorta gets eat eaten by a snake, Kaa (Scarlett Johannson), and is trying not to get murdered by a big orangutan, King Louie (Christopher Walken), and a tiger, Shere Khan (Idris Elba). Those are the events.

I have questions.

I have many questions.

1.) Let’s set aside the dumb, weird plot quirks that could have metastasized at nearly any point during the slow growth from Rudyard Kipling’s classic tale to the hand-drawn Disney sing-song funfest to... whatever this mishmash of adventure porn and monkey terror is. What’s the message here? Man still holds dominion over beast? You can learn to be accepted in any mutually constructed, nontraditional community if you’re not a vegan?

2.) What in the name of “Randy Newman on PCP” were they thinking in how the songs were included? For the first long chunk before we met Baloo (admittedly the best part of the movie), joy was not in abundance. Little wolf cub puppies cried and missed their man-cub brother. Terror surrounded Mowgli everywhere, including a Johannson-voiced snake that is going to put the A fairly useless, albeit pretty, remake of a “classic Freudian whammy on some tale” about a boy who lives in the jungle and… soon-to-be-very-sexually-contries not to die? fused audience-goers. Then a bear shows up and they sing? Huh? I’ve long said it’s disorienting when cinematic adaptations of musicals suddenly have characters burst into song because that’s not the accepted language of film. But this is some next-level mind-screwery...

3.) No, seriously, what the hell is with the songs?! When King Louie shows up, he is straight-up terrifying. His bulbous primate moobs are gyrating all higgledypiggledy as he rains unholy death upon those around him... while singing a catchy show tune? Did they not understand that a murder mammal singing “I Wanna Be Like You” makes it sound like, in the next scene, an orangutan voiced by Christopher Walken is going to be wearing Mowgli’s face on his face?

4) What was the tone the final climactic battle was aiming for? Narratively, the redemption for Mowgli was (literally) flimsy, as his growth appeared to be remembering which branches will send you to a hellish, fiery death if you step on them.

Even if there’s no “moral to the story,” I’d love to understand what the filmmakers intended for me to be thinking about other than, “I think we’re about to have a jungle barbeque up in this joint. Hope tigers are good eating!”

All kidding aside, I don’t get The Jungle Book. Not this version at least. As a demonstration of technical prowess, showing how realistic talking animals have now become, it’s fine, I guess? I don’t know why we want our talking animals to be realistic because talking animals are... not realistic. But OK. For me, technical marvel without emotional grounding is masturbatory, special-effect self-congratulation.

I don’t want to care how many hairs on Bagheera’s head move. I want to care what’s inside his head. But, hey, that’s just the bare necessities for me.

Kevin Spacey and Michael Shannon bring life to Richard Nixon and Elvis Presely in, well, Elvis & Nixon.

T

here is an often-repeated anecdote that Charlie Chaplin once entered a Charlie Chaplin look-alike contest and came in second. It’s a popular story, one that illustrates the emptiness behind celebrity and fame, but it is just a story. No hard facts have ever confirmed the tall tale. Yet, the allure of the story is not in its factuality, but in the popular notion of what celebrity requires: not skill, talent or genius, but the correct look with the right costume.

This apocryphal story is echoed nicely in Elvis & Nixon when two Elvis impersonators confront Elvis Presley (Michael Shannon) and his childhood friend, Jerry Schilling (Alex Pettyfer). The impersonators compliment Elvis on his dress, but they critique it simultaneously, claiming to be more accurate representations of the King.

Elvis and Schilling casually chuckle at the impersonators who have no idea that they are talking to the real McCoy. Furthermore, this has happened before.

Elvis & Nixon is a silly film; one where the truth is stranger than fiction, but it is how Shannon approaches the character of Elvis — not as a washed-up, drugged-out caricature, but Elvis as an Elvis impersonator — that makes it compelling viewing. Director Liza Johnson and Shannon work hard to peel away the façade that is Elvis, only to find that too many years have passed — too many albums, too many movies, too many adoring fans. If there is anything left of Elvis Aaron Presley, then it is strictly Elvis’s memory of such a man. In a revealing scene, Elvis shows Schilling his kit of hair spray, hair dye, hemorrhoid cream — for the bags under his eyes — glasses, coats, gold belts, all of it part and parcel of being the King. Without them, he’s just a man. And Elvis is done being just a man.

Now Elvis wants to save America, stop the youth from listening to drug music, squash the Black Panthers and restore order to the Union. How will the King accomplish this? By acquiring a badge. And not just a county deputy badge — which he flashes at every available opportunity — but a real Undercover Agent-At-Large badge from the federal Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs. How will he accomplish this? By walking up to the gates of the White House and asking to see President Nixon (Kevin Spacey).

And see Nixon he did. On December 20, 1971, Elvis sauntered into the Oval Office and was appointed an agent by President Richard Nixon.

Lucky for Elvis, Nixon was just as far up his own ass as Elvis was. What other sitting president would appoint an aging rock star and clearly unstable individual as an undercover drug narc? Just the most paranoid president of the 20th century.

Though the performances from Shannon and Spacey are fantastic, Elvis & Nixon routinely strays from the center to explore the lives of the yes-men surrounding the two heavyweights. These moments add little and distract too much from the overall thrust of the movie. Yet, these moments don’t derail the movie, which finds its footing whenever Shannon’s Elvis strides back on screen.

Celebrity may not be honest or authentic, but is sure is captivating.

W

e’re taught in early language arts classes to write what we know. But in writing about food, the adage creates a paradox: When a reviewer dines out, he or she does so to experience something new or change perception about something common. Thus, the food writer is often forced to write about that which he or she doesn’t know.

Food writers work around that obstacle in numerous ways: some become method actors and imagine the stories behind food; some work in kitchens, ask questions or read books to learn; some fake it and coast; some — few — really are good enough to write well about nearly everyIl Pastaio thing.

I don’t always know or care what goes into a dish, but I at least know the Susan France feeling of eating it. I mean, if it tastes like wet dog, I’ll make a note. But my favorite restaurants in Boulder County make food for feeling, and none does so more than Il Pastaio.

Its homemade pasta, Italian and Italian-American staple dishes, wine by the carafe, paper covers on tables, the simple paper menu, Peroni, Italian spoken behind the counter, the cheesy leaning tower of Pisa logo, the cramped dining room, all of it. It’s the only restaurant in Boulder that feels like home, and much of the credit goes to the quality of the food itself.

On a recent evening, we sat at a tall table along the wall and ordered a lot.

The first dish that came was polenta with gorgonzola. The polenta was piled semi-soft on a plate, with the consistency of wet beach sand at low tide. The gorgonzola was sauced on, and added everything to the polenta. It was salty, creamy and simple.

The next dish was a seafood salad inspired by a Southern Italian dish.

Small octopi were beheaded and drenched in citrus and oil. They had a pleasant consistency — slightly resistant, but tender. Either they or the peppers on the salad gave each bite a thick, bright olive oil glaze. With fresh lemon, crispy lettuce and white rings of calamari, it sprang, and the preparation of the octopi welcomed robust maritime flavor.

We then moved on to pasta, eating pappardelle arrabiatta and fetuccine alla matriciana. The pappardelle were big, broad noodles that went on for

by Matt Cortina days, and the spicy arrabiatta sauce was perfectly acidic and bright, the tomatoes fully deconstructed, and the oil of chili peppers liberally integrated. The matriciana sauce was an exceptional ragù of tomato and chunks of onion and pancetta. Though the meat is typically robust guanciale (jowl), the pancetta bits were fatty and indulgent, and the pasta alone would’ve been a meal.

But we pressed on with entrees of eggplant parmesan and mushroom ravioli. The ravioli came in crescent moon shape and were expertly cooked. The pasta shell was al dente, and the savory mushroom filling was piping hot.

The eggplant parm came in a simple basil and tomato sauce, with broiled mozzarella cheese atop soft, thick eggplant slices. It’s such a simple, important dish and so easy to mess up with heavy sauce, or wrong ingredient proportions, or incongruous textures, but Il Pastaio’s is exemplary and should be given a plaque for its exceptional service to this community.

At the end of the meal, we had gotten sauce, olive oil and bread crumbs everywhere. The scraps and stains told the story of a meal well-had; you don’t make a mess during a bad meal. Il Pastaio, as all good restaurants are, is good for the soul. If you want that feeling, this is it.

Who needs nut pickers, Parmesan chippers, pasta tongs and other odd implements?

hen I’m asked: “Which kitchen tools are absolutely essential?” I’ve always answered in my sage Jedi voice: “A sharp chef ’s knife and your hands.”

While that is good, if glib, advice, why do I have drawers, boxes and flower vases crammed with single-purpose culinary implements from crab crackers and pasta tongs to Parmesan chippers and caviar spoons? During two moves in a decade, I have divested myself of a great many things, including hundreds of cookbooks, but not these tools.

I have a hard time recalling when certain implements came into my life. Some were inherited, such as the nut cracker and picker from my family, and I found others at estate sales. Some were acquired from the great wall of kitchen doodads at McGuckin’s. The ones with logos on them migrated to me in my role as a food writer for 35 years. There are some whose purpose is unknown. I don’t remember the last time I needed a potato masher, musubi maker or my collection of pie weights, pie bird, crimp protector, pie lifters and my favorite, a pie gate. Some I only use during the holidays.

You don’t sell your tools. You never know when you need a lime zester. I’m likely to carry the weight of these implements with me a long time.

Rediscovery of the popper

I don’t have a lot of one-job cooking devices hanging around besides a coffee maker, my rice steamer and one prime example of perfect technology: The popcorn popper is an almost steampunk-like stove-top contraption that allows you to turn a crank and stir the popcorn as it pops so it doesn’t burn.

The result is popcorn far tastier than any from a microwaved bag and a throwback to my childhood fave, the magical Jiffy Pop. Using the stove-top popper produces popcorn at cents for a giant bowl, and gives me control over the type and amount of oil, salt and organic popcorn. It leaves out the obscene packaging involved, and I’m not exposed to “popcorn lung.” Plus: The device will still work in post-zombie apocalypse Boulder.

drink Copper Kettle’s Mexican Chocolate Stout is still a winner

et’s all agree that this past snowstorm was the last throe of winter. In exchange for politely ushering winter out the door, we’ll drink one more stout and then be done with it all for, oh, six months.

A stout worthy enough to end on is the Mexican Chocolate Stout from Copper Kettle Brewing Company in Denver. It’s, among other honors, the 2011 Great American Beer Festival gold medal winner in the herb and spice category. Almost five years after winning that award — and five years after Copper Kettle opened its doors — the Mexican Chocolate Stout is still remarkable.

Copper Kettle brewed this stout using cacao nibs, cassia cinnamon and a blend of three chili peppers — all things that go really well in dark beers, and all things that make it to the palate.

Matt Cortina When I first opened the bottle, I was hit by the overwhelming scent of fruity chili peppers. They were so tart — some think the beer tastes like a sour — that the scent was almost like that of strawberries. The aroma opened up some when I poured the bottle into a glass, and having not read the label as to what was in it, I could tell there was something familiar, just not what.

Of course, that ended up being the cinnamon. Copper Kettle chose the cassia variety, which you’ll find in many homes and baking aisles, likely because of its distinctive scent, even if you can’t immediately place your finger on what it is. The cassia variety’s scientific name, cinnamomum aromaticum, would seem to indicate it is more fragrant than Copper Kettle’s Mexican Chocolate Stout is at other varieties, but probably not once robust and refined. because scientists create misnomers all the time just to mess with us.

Whatever, this isn’t about them.

The beer poured pitch black, with a brownish head that dissipated quickly.

Tasting it, there was an immediate bite in which the cinnamon starred. After swallowing, out came a robust dark chocolate flavor, which arrived just in time to integrate with the cinnamon. And after that, the essence of the chili peppers came back through the nose and rounded out the experience completely. Copper Kettle says on the label that they tried to imitate the old Mexican spicy hot chocolate drink in this brew, and on flavor, they nailed it.

At 7 percent ABV and 50 IBUs, it’s still remarkably drinkable — like, hot chocolate drinkable. Yet it still manages to engage and entertain the taste buds.

The flavor of smoke only came out about halfway through the drink for me, and when I started to recognize how it worked with the cinnamon, the stout just somehow got better. That smoke likely came from roasted malt in the brew.

The beer doesn’t rely on the novelty of any of the flavors, the chilies especially, and balances each perfectly. And you’d think there’d be some discomfort on the tongue while drinking a beer with cinnamon and chilies, but despite maybe the first sip, the stout’s heat and spice intensity are refined.

The Mexican Chocolate Stout is only available in Colorado, and you can find it in liquor stores statewide or in Copper Kettle’s Denver tap room.

Part of this effort is to better understand illicit substances by making them more readily available to medical and scientific organizations for research of their effects, both harmful and helpful.

The World Health Organization reports that 80 percent of the global population lacks sufficient access to pain relieving medicines, a human rights crisis in its own right, and calls for proper research of substances, like cannabis, that can solve this shortage regardless of its illegal classification.

As member states made their opening statements regarding the draft resolution, tensions emerged.

On the pro-drug end of the spectrum is Jamaica, arguing that there is insufficient flexibility in the resolution to allow the right to personal consumption of drugs, specifically cannabis, which is a matter of religious and cultural significance for the island nation.

Many countries, including those in the European Union, Switzerland, Mexico, Uruguay and others, say that the draft does not go far enough toward reducing criminalization, arguing it omits a necessary moratorium on the death penalty for drug offenses as well as the endorsement of harm reduction tactics.

On the more conservative side are countries like China and Indonesia, both of which made statements on Tuesday. China called for the need for international solidarity in the classification of controlled substances as illicit, calling into question the legalization of marijuana in states like Colorado. Both countries are joined by several others in claiming their sovereign right to institute justice systems that include the death penalty.

UNGASS is a critical reassessment of prohibition that seeks to recognize and explore the spectrum of possibilities between legalization and criminalization.

As the conversation continues into the coming days, the collective call for a resolution that will serve as a point of departure for member states — allowing them to effectively implement a new era of human centered drug policy — grows louder.

Just how many Americans smoke pot?

ast Wednesday was 4/20, so this week is an excellent time to consider the eternal stoner questions: Just how many Americans smoke pot? And just how many have ever smoked it?

Fortunately, the U.S. government has some answers for you that for once seem reasonably plausible.

Last September, the Feds released three tables comparing the estimates of marijuana use found in the 2013 and 2014 editions of the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. The tables compared 2013 and 2014 estimates for the number of Americans who used marijuana at least once in their lives, at least once in the past year, and at least once in the past month.

The annual estimates are based on some 70,000 interviews with a randomly selected sample of Americans aged 12 or older.

Start with the question of how many have ever inhaled. In 2013, there were an estimated 114,712,000 Americans over the age of 12 who had smoked pot at least once in their lives. In 2014, the number increased to 117,213,000 (44.2 percent of the population age 12 or older).

The number of Americans who used pot at least once in the past year was 32,952,000 (12.6 percent of the age group) in 2013 and 35,124,000 (13.2 percent) in 2014.

The third comparison — how many people smoked marijuana in the past month — is probably as good an answer as you’re going to get to the question of “How many Americans smoke pot?”

In 2013, an estimated 19,810,000 Americans aged 12 or older used marijuana in the past month (7.5 percent of the age group). In 2014, the number rose to an estimated 22,188,000 (8.4 percent) —

a year-to-year increase of 2,378,000.

What the survey did not find was evidence of much of a surge in the number of kids aged 12 to 17 smoking pot.

Among the nation’s roughly 12 million middle schoolers — ages 12, 13 and 14 — the estimated number smoking pot once a month actually declined — from 277,000 in 2013 to 245,000 in 2014, a drop of 32,000.

The estimated number of 12-year-olds smoking pot in 2014 was 20,000 out of an age cohort of roughly 4 million. In 2013, it was 21,000 out of a similar age cohort.

Among the nation’s high schoolers — ages 15, 16 and 17 — the estimated number of monthly pot smokers is much larger than among middle schoolers — 1,156,000 in 2014 among an age cohort of roughly 12 million, a gain of 101,000 from 2013, when figure for 2013 was 1,762,000.

Most of the increase occurred among 17-yearolds; in 2014, an estimated 81,000 more smoked pot in the past month than did in 2013.

But the demographic groups that showed the

greatest increase in monthly pot smoking from 2013 to 2014 were found at the other end of the age spectrum.

Americans aged 55 to 59 — boomers born at the height of the post-war baby boom in other words — registered the largest year-over-year numerical increase of any age cohort in the study. The estimated number of them smoking pot in the past month rose from 910,000 in 2013 to 1,578,000 in 2014, an increase of 668,000 in the space of a year.

A similar trend turned up among older boomers as well. Among the 60 to 64 cohort, estimated monthly pot use rose from 548,000 in 2013 to 763,000 in 2014, a 215,000 increase. And among 65 and older, the number who reported smoking pot once a month jumped from 377,000 in 2013 to 575,000 in 2014, a 198,000 increase, most of which can probably be ascribed to early model boomers entering the geezer years.

Robin Williams once famously said that if you can remember the ’60s you weren’t there. Maybe some of them wanted to see what they missed. Or wanted to miss what they saw.

SHOW A LITTLE RESPECT

May is many things, but did you know it’s International Respect for Chickens Month? And if a whole month seems like too long of a time to take off from work in order to celebrate all things chicken, don’t worry, May 4 is International Respect for Chickens Day. Everybody can take one day out of their busy schedules to respect a chicken.

United Poultry Concerns, Courtesy of United Poultry Concerns who started this movement more than a decade ago, suggests that on May 4 we should all do an “action for chickens.” They suggest several possible actions including one that caught our eye — “holding an office party.”

Well, you don’t have to ask us twice to party. So on May 4, BW will be holding our first annual “respect that chicken” office party. There will be much drinking; a dart board holding the image of that “finger lickin’ good” Sanders fellow; a ban on all “why did it cross the road jokes;” and a continuous loop of “Chicken Train” by Ozark Mountain Daredevils playing in the background.

On May 5th, we’ll go back to eating our old friends ... respectfully, of course.

OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY REALITY CHECK

As Coloradans prepare to start signing petitions that will finally grant them safer setbacks from oil and gas wells and the industry’s massive industrial production platforms, as well as granting local communities the right to make land use decisions over oil and gas activity the same way they currently do over every other industry on the planet, it’s time to reflect on one of the false claims that the industry, and the politicians it pays to do its bidding, have been making over the years.

Remember all those industry Wikimedia Commons mouth pieces and politicians like Governor Hickenlooper who kept telling us that if we tried to protect our health, home values and quality of life by banning drilling in our neighborhoods that the entire economy of the state of Colorado would collapse into recession because the oil and gas industry would go elsewhere to drill? Well, thanks to over supply, we have gotten to test that claim. The oil and gas industry has all but shut down in Colorado, far below the level it would be allowed to still operate Governor John Hickenlooper at with 2,500 ft. setbacks and community control over the extraction process, and guess what?

The sky didn’t fall, the Colorado economy is actually growing and overall unemployment is down. It was all a giant lie perpetrated on the people of Colorado by the oil and gas industry, most of our bought-and-paid-for politicians and let’s not forget the mainstream media like the network TV stations and the owners of the Denver Post and most the other Front Range newspapers that made the same exaggerated claims while raking in oil and gas advertising dollars.

Remember that bogus energy and environment advertising section the Post tried to pawn off as news? What a joke.

So get out there and sign that petition. We now know it won’t hurt the economy a bit and it will surely save some lives and property values.
