ome are born with good luck.

But I was 30 years old before Lady Luck smiled on me with full radiance, arriving in the form of a petite bundle of feistiness, smarts, political savviness, warmth, playfulness and all-around beauty... named Susan DeMarco.

I apologize for turning inward for a personal commentary today, but DeMarco (as she’s called by all who’ve known her) is an admirable example of the virtue of citizen activism — unsung heroes and heroines standing up for the Common Good. She’s been a teacher,

leader of public-interest groups, investigative journalist, author of three books, government official, public policy innovator, mentor and lifelong champion of economic fairness, social justice and equal opportunity for all. In other words, as one activist put it, “She’s a firecracker.”

Alas, though, on the first of April, DeMarco slipped away from me and all who loved her. I was alone with her when she drew her last breath, 18 hours after I asked the hospital to honor her previously written directive that all lifesupport tubes be removed from her body. Crushingly sad, of course, yet deeply rewarding, for she not only outmaneuvered the blood clot that had slammed into her brain, but also our

society’s high-tech medical imperative that she be held captive in her own severely damaged body.

And how very DeMarco that she managed to “fly away” on the 1st, which, ironically, was both Easter Sunday and April Fools’ Day! Above all, DeMarco was a free spirit — full of life, curiosity and imagination. For example, she delighted in the diversity of birds that populated her big South Austin yard, and she often had magical dreams of flying with them.

She even imagined her final exit as a joyous, avian-like experience — as expressed in an old, uplifting gospel song she liked: “I’ll Fly Away.” And that’s just what she did.

There has been little coverage of the Yemen war in the mainstream media. The Saudis have made it nearly impossible for journalists to cover it. They also have employed public relations outfits to help “improve the image of Saudi Arabia” in countries such as France, the U.S. and the U.K. Saudi Arabia isn’t the only foreign country to conduct such a propaganda campaign in the mainstream media.

The Israeli government has been doing this sort of thing for many years. But it hasn’t been completely successful.

For example, an angry MSNBC host Chris Hayes on April 4 condemned an “unconscionable” use of force by the Israeli army against Palestinian protesters in Gaza. He said that more than 750 Palestinians were shot and at least 15 were killed (the toll would end up being larger). Hayes said that a few days later, Trump and Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu had a chummy phone call and they didn’t appear to have discussed the massacre, according to the White House readout.

Hayes noted that defenders of Israel’s military would say that the protest was, “endorsed by Hamas, which rules Gaza in a thuggish and anti-democratic manner and uses violence and terror in their campaign against Israel.”

He said some protesters “threw rocks and Molotov cocktails and rolled burning tires at the border fence. All of which is true. But this in no way justifies what Israeli soldiers appear to have done, which is perch on a hill and pick off protesters with sniper fire.” He showed videos of teenagers being shot while running in an open field and while praying. Hayes said soldiers, “rained down bullets on unarmed protesters again and again.”

Hayes said the vast majority of members of Congress have been silent.

The U.S. blocked a U.N. Security Council investigation of what had happened. “From day one,” he said, the Trump administration, “has sent a message to our Middle East allies, particularly Israel and the Saudis,” that there would be, “no raps on the knuckle, no tsk-tsking about restraint. Our allies are taking that directive and running with it.”

The U.S. group Human Rights Watch said, “the Israeli government presented no evidence that rock-throwing and other violence by some demonstrators seriously threatened Israeli soldiers across the border fence.”

The Israeli human-rights group B’Tselem quickly took out ads in the country’s newspapers encouraging soldiers to, “refuse to open fire on unarmed demonstrators.” The organization pointed out that, “the command to use lethal force against civilians who do not pose mortal danger is patently illegal.”

guest column Boulder County needs an authentic choice for County Commissioner

eading into the 2018 elections, Boulder County faces two divergent futures — either extending the status quo with a dangerous game of insider politics, or creating a new vision for local government led by our community that prioritizes the health of the environment and the wages, benefits and living conditions of our local workforce. The people and natural environment of Boulder County need authentic representation and power. It’s time to redefine what local government can really mean.

Environmentally, the stakes couldn’t be higher. The current Commissioners and Democratic Party front-runner Matt Jones have accepted, and are currently brokering, a massive industrialization of the County at the hands of the oil and gas industry: 1,800-plus projected wells and associated well pads, pipelines, compressor stations and other infrastructure for the extraction of climate-destroying fossil fuels, both gas and oil.

Extraction Oil and Gas’s spacing plan includes Escuela Bilingue Pioneer elementary school. Crestone’s plan calls for over 140 oil wells on Boulder County open space. There will be more to come. The County and its environment face their most destructive industrialization since the coalfields of the early 20th century. People will suffer and some will die in industrial accidents and traffic fatalities associated with the millions of truck trips, and through the short- and long-term health effects well established in over 900 peer-reviewed medical studies. Our environment, wildlife and climate will suffer in a permanent sense. This is not the future anyone of conscience in Boulder County desires.

It’s a future that will only benefit the CEOs of the fossil fuel industry, and one that is currently being mandated by every level of government.

These are the most glaring ramifications of County politicians more loyal to party and collaboration with industry than to the protection of the health and fundamental rights of Boulder County community members

and the environment we rely upon.

This isn’t going to get better unless a meaningful change of direction takes place.

Boulder County can lead on issues as diverse as rail service and public transportation, sustainable agriculture, housing, workplace issues like wages, unionization and benefits, and a democratically run economy that functions for the people and environment. We can replace the current ingrained pattern of party politics with community involvement, mobilization and governance for a future that could serve as a global model. A home rule charter written and ratified by the people of Boulder County can establish the rights of workers, of the environment, and the empowerment of our immigrant community. For the sake of our children’s future, we must reverse the long collaboration between government and corporations and the resulting environmental destruction, racism and economic uncertainty. We need government of, by, and for the people.

I am running for Boulder County Commissioner after decades of community activism and with the understanding that changes of this nature require a real movement. I am not a politician, a CEO, business leader or political insider. I am a father, registered nurse and one of thousands of individuals working tirelessly to protect Boulder County and to craft a vision for what we can accomplish, together, as a community.

In the months to come I will be working with families, farmers, teachers and local leaders to build a grassroots alternative. Our campaign wants to hear from you, to bring in your voice and ideas, and to help us win more than a Commissioner’s office but a just, sustainable and democratically run Boulder County. Let’s think big and create potential for all of us along the way.

letters Second Amendment does not guarantee blanket gun ownership

Here’s what Americans need to know about gun-control and mass shootings: First, despite Paul Danish’s claims [Re: The Danish Plan, April 12] that any gun-control is only a form of prohibition that inevitably fails, an assault weapons ban, as implemented in democratic Australia, works. It has ended mass shootings there.

Australia had massacres, but in 1996, 35 died at the hands of a man with a semi-automatic assault weapon — the Port Arthur killings. The country said, “Enough!” and it implemented a comprehensive national ban on assaultweapons and pump-action shotguns — it’s illegal to own, sell, repair or manufacture parts for or buy such weapons.

Now, and this is important, Australians still have gun-ownership rights: one might sleep with a loaded shotgun under the bed, one might even own a handgun — all legally. A citizen just doesn’t have the right to own an assault weapon. In conjunction with the ban, thousands of Australians joined a voluntary government buyback program, and surrendered tons, literally, of personal weapons. They’d decided their extraneous guns were ruining their country. Also, Aussies now need a license to own a gun.

The result: Global News journalist Katie Dangerfield reports that gun deaths in Australia have dropped dramatically: from 98 in 1996 to 35 in 2014. Most importantly, Australia has not had a single mass killing since implementation of their comprehensive assault-weapons ban. Their highest murder-victim count has been two — below the “mass killing” threshold of five. Here is prohibition that works!

Danish and others seem to believe that the Second Amendment is absolute, guaranteeing blanket gun ownership without any government regulation whatsoever; in fact, the word “regulated” appears in that amendment, and it says nothing about assault-weapons. Nor have assault weapons bans here in the U.S. ever been ruled unconstitutional.

We can end the mass shootings, which make a mockery of “American freedom,” but we’ll need the sense and political will to do it. Start by telling others about Australia.

On Boulder’s gun control

After the Boulder City Council makes a decision on how much of the City’s taxpayers’ money they are willing to waste on a losing lawsuit over state preemption laws; they must answer three important questions: Boulder Weekly

When those victims are gunned down in their homes, by a criminal with a stolen firearm with the serial number ground off, the Council will read of their demise, wring their hands, and lament, “This is why we need more gun control.”

Stand up to the bully

The unsettling disarray of this White House administration, coupled with the proven lies spoken by the President and his representatives, makes me sincerely fear for this country. A special counsel was finally appointed to determine the extent of Trumps collaboration with the Russians. America is heading toward a constitutional crisis, enabled by the acquiescence of people like Sen. Cory Gardner.

I have family history that is pertinent to this issue. My cousin, William Mandel, was a leading Sovietologist during the 1940s and 1950s.

As an academic at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution, and an expert on the Soviet Union, he often traveled there to do research. Joseph McCarthy interrogated my cousin before the House Un-American Activities Committee, accusing him of being a communist spy. McCarthy’s aggressive witchhunt violated the civil rights of thousands of United States citizens.

Most were afraid to stand up to that bully. Over 2,000 government employees lost their jobs as a result. Robbed of his career at Stanford, blacklisted as a journalist and writer, punished without evidence, William behaved as any true patriot would. He stood up to the bully, refusing to submit.

The irony today, the hypocrisy, is the substantial evidence of Trump’s collusion with Russia and his blatant lying to avoid justice. Trump is directly interfering with the FBI Russian investigation. This is truly un-American. Still, the majority of Republicans demonstrate their spineless cowardice by continuing to support this traitor through their silence.

I ask Sen. Gardner to make a public statement demanding full disclosure of Trump’s dealings with Russia, including his tax returns. Uphold your oath, Cory, stand up to the bully.

Colorado Senate set to kill conversion therapy ban... again by Caitlin Rockett

few weeks ago, Silas Musick went to the Colorado State Capitol and testified in support of a bill to ban conversion therapy, a discredited practice that attempts to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity. This year was Musick’s third time testifying in support of a ban in Colorado, and the fourth time this bill has been brought before the General Assembly.

The bill would prohibit state-licensed mental health professionals from practicing conversion therapy on minors. California was the first state to ban the practice in 2012, and as of March 28 of this year, 11 states plus the District of Columbia have enacted a similar law or regulations — and the dominoes continue to fall. This year, nearly 50 such bills have been introduced in 24 states.

All of the nation’s leading mental health, child welfare and educational organizations discredit the practice as unnecessary, ineffective and dangerous. On April 17, 11 of these organizations signed a statement urging states to make these bills a priority.

And yet it looks like this will be the fourth time Silas Musick watches Colorado’s bill die in the Senate.

Within hours of the House passing the bill, the Senate sent the legislation to the State, Veteran and Military Affairs Committee, known to Capitol insiders as the “kill committee,” a graveyard of sorts for bills in both chambers of the Legislature.

It’s personal for Musick because he underwent conversion therapy in his early 20s at the Colorado Springs-based Focus on the Family Institute, and later at the now defunct, “ex-gay” Christian organization Exodus International.

For Musick, who grew up in a loving but fundamentalist Southern Baptist home, the choice to seek conversion therapy was his own. He’d never had a same-sex relationship until college, when he and his roommate began a clandestine romance that lasted several years.

But when that ended, Musick shared his story — full of pain, confusion and guilt — with a leader at the conservative Christian school he was attending.

“Our scholarships were taken away, our leadership positions were taken away, we were forbidden to see each other, we were both required to go to a therapist and given a laundry list of things to do, one of which was telling my parents,” he says.

ularly going to therapy to address his homosexuality, but the feelings were still there, front and center, no matter how hard he tried to push them away. But his parents still thought there was a chance at “redemption” for their child.

“As far as I understood the world, I had screwed up to the point of no return, so I suggested Focus on the Family to them,” he says.

Musick is quick to point out that Focus has pushed back against his story, claiming they never offered a conversion therapy program. Their offerings were “absolutely religious-based,” Musick says, and not led by licensed therapists.

“But the content and goal was similar,” he says.

The end goal, the only correct result, was to not be gay.

Musick sat through “super indoctrinating” classes on marriage and family and worldviews, “basically teaching us how awful and pagan the media and parts of our culture were.” It all re-instilled the things Musick had grown up believing.

He participated in an internship with Jerry Jenkins, the author of the evangelical Christian book series Left Behind, and was even once pressured into going on a “straight” date with one of his friends.

“There was a lot of trying to flee temptation,” Musick says of Focus’s program. “At the onset of having sexual desires, [learning] things to do to try to stop those.”

Though Musick’s experience was conversionbased, conversion therapy can involve extreme tac-

tics such as shock therapy, violent forms of roleplay, and nudity and forced intimate touching.

Focus on the Family provided a statement about their stance on what they call “counseling for unwanted homosexuality”: “We oppose action by the government, gayidentified activists or mental health groups to stigmatize or ban ‘sexual orientation change efforts’ by mental health professionals. We do not endorse any one specific or singular therapeutic model to help those with unwanted homosexuality. In actuality, a wide variety of methods have helped people leave homosexuality. God is infinitely creative and uses a wide variety of means to bring life, growth and change.”

Many who oppose a ban on conversion therapy use free speech as the foundation of their arguments, including Sen. Owen Hill of Colorado Springs.

In 2015, Hill wrote a statement explaining why he voted no on the first iteration of the bill, saying he “was unconvinced about the need for legislation on what can be an internally moderated practice,” and that his “position as a legislator is first and foremost that individual liberties should be preserved.”

Hill didn’t respond to a request for comment before press time.

Daniel Ramos, executive director of LGBTQ advocacy group One Colorado, says freespeech arguments misplace the focus. “[Sen. Hill] is focused on the parent when we need to be focused on the minor,” Ramos says. “No young person should be told that who they are or who they love is wrong and should be changed.”

The pressure to change created so much internal conflict in Musick that about five years after attending classes at Focus on the Family, he attempted suicide. His partner found him and got Musick to the emergency room. He spent most of the summer of 2010 in a psychiatric ward.

Now, eight years later, Musick is married with two children. He’s almost two years into his transition from female to male — a truth about himself that came many years after his conversion therapy. It’s “infuriating” to listen to so-called exgays oppose legislation to ban conversion therapy by saying they never would have gotten married or had a family.

“If I think about it, had I been transgender when I was young I wouldn’t be alive today,” he says. “I’m almost certain of it because I didn’t have a support system. That’s how I can push past my own vulnerability and share my story for the young queer kids out there who need role models and support. And I’m a parent now. There are parents who are truly seeking the right outlets for their kids who are trying to discover their own identity.

I think most parents are well-intentioned and they are looking for guidance, too.”

t was 9 a.m. on a Saturday morning, and the church parking lot was already filling up. It was January, but still warm enough that a young couple rode up on their bikes, towing a toddler in a trailer. A volunteer with a name tag opened the locked door for each person as they arrived. Dozens of people were gathering for another round of volunteer training at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Boulder (UUCB), where Ingrid Encalada Latorre has been in sanctuary since Dec. 16, 2017.

On that day, in the middle of flu season, Ingrid wasn’t feeling well. She introduced herself, via an interpreter, giving a brief summary of her journey since leaving Peru in 2000, including a felony charge for using falsified documents in 2010 and the failed attempts to appeal her conviction in both 2016 and 2017. To make matters worse, her partner, Eliseo Juardo Fernandez, was being held in detention at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) contract facility in Aurora, and she was in the middle of planning vigils and press events in an effort to get him released on bond.

She seemed exhausted.

As members of UUCB’s Sanctuary Now ministry started their training, Ingrid sat onstage looking out at the full pews.

Her youngest son, Anibal, 2, sat on her lap, while her oldest, Bryant, 9, leaned on her shoulder. She didn’t last long before excusing herself to her room to get some rest before the community potluck that followed the training. She thanked everyone for their support before leaving.

Since first entering sanctuary in November 2016 at the Mountain View Friends Society in Denver, Ingrid has become an outspoken activist, advocating for broad immigration reforms that could help not only her, but tens of thousands of other immigrants as well. She has, sometimes reluctantly, put herself in the spotlight in her effort to draw attention to what she believes is the systemic injustice of the U.S. immigration system.

“Just like we are doing things outside our comfort zone that we know are the right things to do so we do them anyways, I think that’s what she’s doing,” Mary Jo Highland, volunteer coordinator and Ingrid’s interpreter told me a few weeks later. “She knows it’s the right thing to do for her community. She might not be as public if it were 100 percent up to her and there weren’t other people depending on her.”

At the same time Ingrid is serving her community, she finds herself dependent on hundreds of local volunteers from more than a dozen different faith congregations and the broader Boulder County community in order for her to take sanctuary. As the group of new volunteers soon learned, sanctuary is an enormous undertaking. What started as half a dozen UUCB members meeting to discuss books about immigration in 2011 has become a massive volunteer operation.

“This congregation has been doing a lot of work for a number of years to not [fall into] the white savior complex,” says Reverend Kelly Dignan. “How do we come alongside those who are oppressed and not do it out of charity but out of solidarity?”

Mercedes García has lived in Boulder for more than two decades, and at the time UUCB was developing its sanctuary ministry in 2011, her husband was in deportation proceedings, leaving García to raise three daughters alone.

“The ladies [from UUCB] would come and help keep me calm,” she says. “It’s really difficult for people who aren’t in your actual shoes to understand what’s going on. But they were a great, big help. I was afraid to tell people what was going on but they helped me feel safe.”

“When you are in a situation like this, it can be really easy for people to judge you or throw dirt on you,” she says. “But to have open communication between people is really important in feeling supported. When we’re all supported, we’re stronger together.”

There are three families from the church in particular, García says, that she knows she can call whenever she needs help. Likewise, church members, many who are elderly, have called on her to assist them after surgeries or injuries. “It feels really good to have that sense of mutual help where they know they are helping me but I also feel like I am actually helping them too,” she says.

UUCB also became a founding member of the Denver Metro Sanctuary Coalition, which has supported several host congregations and immigrants in sanctuary since 2014, when Arturo Hernandez Garcia became the first person in the modern movement to take sanctuary in Colorado, spending nine months at First Unitarian Society in Denver.

“These were really important steps in being able to eventually become a sanctuary church,” Fitt-Peaster says. “It really helped us be ready when the need for sanctuary arose.”

By January 2017, it became apparent that more and more people might need sanctuary as the political climate grew increasingly hostile toward undocumented immigrants. UUCB helped form the Boulder County Sanctuary Coalition with several other area churches, and the group began discussing the need for a host congregation in Boulder County.

“Historically the church has been a place of sanctuary. We’re in a long line of wonderful people,” says Harriott Quin, a member of the sanctuary coalition representing Community United Church of Christ (UCC) in South Boulder. The congregation recently and unanimously adopted a resolution in support of the Boulder County Sanctuary Coalition at its annual meeting.

“It is a core teaching of both the Hebrew scriptures and the New Testament, that we are to welcome the stranger, welcome the alien and, in the Hebrew scriptures, treat them as citizens of the land,” Lee Berg, interim minister at Community UCC explains. “The very fact that we call the places of our worship sanctuary implies that this is where people can feel safe.”

When it comes to more modern history, churches around the country offered sanctuary to people fleeing deportation during an immigration crackdown on undocumented migrants from Central America in the 1980s, but the approach then was very different than it is today. Ministers and other church members would host immigrants in churches or their homes for brief periods of time, often without the knowledge of the congregation.

While several current members of UUCB acknowledged their church took part, no one could provide much detail, as the entire operation was con14 April 19, 2018

ducted in secret.

“That was clandestine,” says Fred Cole, a member of UUCB for 50 years and one of the original members of the current immigration ministry. “This is intentionally very open what we’re doing.”

Protected by an ICE directive that discourages, but doesn’t prohibit, immigration enforcement in sensitive locations such as churches, the current sanctuary movement informs ICE when a church is, as they say, “hosting a sanctuary guest.”

“The one thing that faith communities can do that not many other com-

munities can is offer sanctuary. This is part of our religious duty, our religious exercise,” Dignan says. “As long as a church doesn’t harbor or transport, there’s nothing illegal about what we’re doing.”

Still, in-line with the structure of Unitarian Universalism, she didn’t want to make a top-down decision about becoming a host congregation.

“We’re a spiritual community, so discernment is different than a regular old democratic process. Discernment comes from the same root word as discussion. Not debate but discussion,” Dignan told the congregation in spring 2017. “So we’re going to have heartfelt, soulful, discussions about this for four months and every person is going to have a chance to be in that discussion.”

During the process of discernment, Dineen, Fitt-Peaster and others hosted all church forums and met with every single group and committee in the church. Most of the concerns centered around security and legal risks, not about whether or not it was the right thing to do.“It wasn’t so much the moral issue as the concerns about the legality, about safety, about did we have enough space or would we lose enough income that we wouldn’t be able to continue,” Fitt-Peaster says. In response, the immigration ministry brought in immigration lawyers and the Sheriff ’s Department to answer questions. They also started a pre-sign

up sheet for volunteers from other congregations in the Boulder County Sanctuary Coalition to ensure the congregation that they wouldn’t be in this alone.

Their efforts paid off and on Oct. 29, 2017, the congregation overwhelmingly agreed to be a sanctuary church for undocumented immigrants.

“It makes me really proud to be able to say my church was the first sanctuary [in Boulder,]” García says. “It means a lot to have a community that will not only listen to you but support you when you share your story.”

The decision was not without risk, however. The vote wasn’t unanimous and Dignan says the congregation lost four members that she knows of for political reasons. Plus, shortly after the vote, a preschool that had been renting half of UUCB’s building shut down, leaving the church with a $35,000 shortfall for the remainder of the fiscal year.

In Dignan’s sermon the Sunday after the vote, she told her congregation they were up to the challenge.

“I’ve been watching, and you’re ready,” she said. “This is not going to be precise or orderly. It’s going to be chaotic, we’re going to feel like we’re out of control. Things will not be perfect.

And that will be our chance to grow.”

Dignan says the action of becoming a sanctuary is in line with the Unitarian Universalist tenets of faith, where every person has inherent worth and dignity.

“When the rubber meets the road, are we willing to put our own self at risk and inconvenience and maybe financial impact to offer courageous love to the world and to honor all people?” she questions. “[Another tenet] is that we are all connected so that when one strand of the web of life is torn the rest of us feel it and the rest of us are called to repair that strand. We’re a network of mutuality, we’re tied together in a garment of destiny. ... Our liberation is bound up with one another.”

With this in mind, church members immediately began preparing space to host someone in need of sanctuary. They installed security cameras, did maintenance work and started training volunteers. They cleared out an archives storage room and music room, and set up the space with a donated bed, microwave, mini-fridge and TV. They hooked up a hose with a shower head at the end of it to the faucet in the nearby men’s bathroom, which already had a drain in the floor, while making plans to convert one of the stalls to a proper shower. They also trained volunteers for various duties and started a sign-up sheet for specific shifts. By the end of November, everything was ready. The only remaining question: Who would come?

On Saturday, Dec. 16, Fitt-Peaster and Dineen were at a Christmas party together, when around 8 p.m. they got the call that Ingrid and Anibal would be arriving in Boulder from Fort Collins soon. The two left their partners and their friends and hurried over to the church.

They already knew of Ingrid, who had been at the Foothills Unitarian Universalist Church in Fort Collins for almost two months, since the day she Boulder Weekly

skipped out on her deportation flight and claimed sanctuary. “I fell into step with them really quickly and fell in love with them,” says Ingrid about the Fort Collins congregation. “I felt bad, because I couldn’t say goodbye to my friends and volunteers there because it was a secret that I was leaving.”

As difficult as it was to leave, she was looking forward to being closer to her family in Westminster and the immigration activist community she had built in Denver. Friends could more easily visit. The move also meant her partner of eight years, Eliseo, could join her when he got off work in the evenings. He is stepfather to Bryant and father to Anibal.

“I feel really good that they’re here with the support and that they’re here safely,” says Eliseo. “It’s much better having them here with me in the United States then if I were here alone.”

With all this in mind, Ingrid packed up her belongings that Saturday night and drove herself to Boulder, where she was welcomed by the entire congregation the next morning at Sunday service.

It wasn’t long before the resilience of the community was tested. Just a couple weeks after Ingrid took up residence at UUCB, she received an emer-

gency alert from Eliseo. Several hours later, Ingrid learned that he had been picked up by ICE on his way to the grocery store and was being held in the immigration detention center in Aurora.

“We already knew that one day ICE would come to get me because of her (Ingrid). So we always had a plan.

We always knew it was going to come,” says Eliseo, who has been in the U.S. for 16 years. “But still they told me it wasn’t because of her; it was because I was a criminal. But it’s not true, and we all know it’s not true because I’m just here living simply.”

ICE has admitted the agency learned about Eliseo while investigating Ingrid, but maintains they did not arrest him as retaliation for Ingrid’s stay in sanctuary.

After hearing about his detention, UUCB and sanctuary coalition immediately mobilized behind Ingrid, as she and his parents attempted to get him released on bond.

“It made me feel a lot better that she wasn’t alone while I was locked up, and for her to have the support meant a lot,” Eliseo says. As a response to his detention, supporters held weekly vigils outside of the Aurora ICE facility, and more and more volunteers signed up to

After four training sessions, there are now approximately 200 volunteers committed to helping Ingrid in one capacity or another. In addition to grocery shopping, doing laundry off-site and providing childcare, someone has to watch the doors at all hours of the day, every day of the week. UUCB has been organizing volunteers into four three-hour shifts throughout each day, along with a 12-hour shift overnight.

The door monitors are trained on who to contact in case of an emergency, and how to interact with ICE officers if they come to the door. But mostly they sit under a sign that says “welcome table,” reading, playing games with Anibal and Bryant, and talking to countless people coming and going from the church.

“I underestimated the amount of work and effort it takes. On the other hand, it brings together your congregation in ways you probably didn’t anticipate,” says Larry Dansky, member of First Congregational Church UCC on Pine Street which participates in the Boulder County Sanctuary Coalition.

“They may be doing this for Ingrid and because it’s the right thing to do and all of that, [but] it’s maybe the best thing this congregation has done for bringing together a community,” he says during a recent door shift. “I think there’s always a benefit to the struggle.”

The Boulder County Sanctuary Coalition now has a total of 13 congregations from around the County, all of which contribute time, resources and volunteers to the sanctuary effort.

“There is absolutely no way we could be a sanctuary church without the other churches,” Dignan confesses.

former preschool. They organize monthly community events at UUCB, giving Ingrid the chance to socialize.

They volunteer to help her with English, or lead an exercise class she can participate in or take Anibal to preschool, where he’s still so young he needs an adult with him at all times.

While time-consuming, it is proving a rewarding experience for volunteers.

“It’s a way of acting out my faith,” says Laura Terpenning, a retired pediatrician and member of Community UCC. “Plus, I’m still doing something for kids.”

It took a little bit for Anibal to warm up to Terpenning, and he often asked for his mom when she first started taking him to school or storytime at the library. But now when she comes, he confidently puts on a small backpack and marches out the church’s

doors, leaving his mother to her life inside.

“The first couple of weeks, it was hard,” says Ingrid about sending Anibal to school with someone else.

“But there’s not much he can do here and it’s good for him to be with other kids.”

“One of the perks of the job,” says volunteer Barbara Richards, is getting to interact with Anibal and Bryant.

Like many of the volunteers, she often plays marbles, checkers and cars with the boys as she sits at the welcome table. On a recent evening shift, volunteer Lynn Johnson helped Bryant make an exploding volcano from a science kit he had been given. The two took over the kitchen while meticulously constructing the plaster mountain.

“What I do is the easy part. I just show up and open the door. I’m not a planner or an organizer. I didn’t think Boulder Weekly

up the idea,” says Johnson, who lives in the neighborhood and is also a member at First Congregational Church. When he first heard Ingrid and the boys had moved into UUCB, he was inspired to help, motivated by federal policies and rhetoric.

“It’s simple: pushback,” he says.

Many members compared this experience to being involved in social movements like women’s suffrage, the civil rights movement or the underground railroad. “This is what we need to stand up now for,” Dineen says. “It’s easy to look back and say, ‘Oh, I would have helped them,’ but this is what it looks like to be involved or be active now.”

Despite the challenges, the family feels safe at UUCB, grateful they are all together.

“We’ve gotten into a rhythm of life, somewhat,” Ingrid says.

Her favorite thing to do is take her kids to the church’s playground, enclosed by a fence that protects her from ICE. She says she enjoys the views and breathing in the fresh air, but it’s also challenging, a harsh reminder of the freedom she no longer has.

“I see people, running for example, and it makes me sad because I can’t do it,” she says. “I used to run a lot but now I’m here and I can’t do it anymore.”

Florence Williams to share the science behind how nature positively affects our brains at Chautauqua talk by Matt Cortina

E

arly in her book, The Nature Fix, Florence Williams writes, “[We] think of nature as a luxury, not a necessity. We don’t recognize how much it elevates us, both personally and politically.”

To counter this, Williams uses the book to share study after study that enumerate the ways nature benefits our bodies and minds. She writes about how these studies can be put into practice, recounting her experiences visiting communities around the globe who do just that. Backed by her own research, Williams makes the case that nature experiences are as essential to living a healthy life as food, water and sleep.

To build the case, Williams participated in experiments with scientists in the Utah desert, visited healing forests in South Korea, rambled in Scotland, hooked herself up to machines and collated years of nature-based neurological research. What she found, time and again, is that nature has tangible, positive effects on the brain, and it often works at subconscious or biological levels. For instance, the smell of spring has an intrinsic, almost mystical mood-lifting quality, but it also is comprised of very real tree aerosols, like pinosylvin, which directly impact our brain chemistry through our nose and act as a mild sedative, while increasing respiration.

Indeed, there are countless examples of how the sight, smell, touch, sound and even taste of nature benefits the human condition, with research to back it up. But Williams is also careful to address the

skeptical reader: How do we know nature has inherent benefits that we can’t just get from other means of relaxation or from simply removing ourselves from sources of harm, like traffic, work stress and technology?

“I think there are a lot of avenues people can pursue, and that includes art and performance and music; any kind of analogic thing is [having] a resurgence,” Williams says. “What’s great about nature though is ... a lot of us can experience nature, it’s free. It’s not like a symphony you need a high-

price ticket to. And I think unlike a lot of other [avenues], it does engage all our senses at once and research is showing that’s one of the secrets to using our brains the way nature has intended.”

Even the hard-to-quantify spiritual benefits of being in nature have research to back them up — Williams documents the progress PTSD patients make in nature, and uses a convincing array of nature writing from Thoreau, Emerson, Wordsworth and more to create a common thesis about nature’s restorative effect on the soul.

With the skeptic in mind, though, Williams turns to the electroencephalogram (EEG) to track the brain activity of people who are exposed to nature. Researchers in Edinburgh put EEGs on 25 people, set them loose in nature, and found lower levels of frustration and higher levels of what they called meditation. (When Williams conducted the same study with herself, she found similar results, but noted the sound of traffic near the city park in which she walked likely contributed to increased levels of frustration.)

Though Williams points out that nature is independently beneficial, it’s hard not to read the book through the lens of technology’s effect on society and our individual psyches. With the role of Facebook in the 2016 election and the ensuing Cambridge Analytica ordeal, more people are becoming aware of the heavy-handed way in which social media is disrupting our lives. ty of technology from personal assistants like Alexa and Echo, to Chromebooks that are given to elementary school children, has some people seeking for a way out. Nature, surely would be a part of that neoLuddite lifestyle.

“I think there are a lot of reasons why we are becoming fast disenchanted with technology,” Williams says.

“So I’m not surprised that people are seeking an antidote to the feeling that we are overly connected to our digital devices. I think people are desperately looking for authentic experiences.”

You can’t help but look at a toddler instinctively flick his finger across an iPad on a long flight, or watch a whole family bury their faces in their phones while dining out, and not wonder if we’ve just ruined our brains beyond a level that even nature can repair. Williams doesn’t think so, and doesn’t think it’s just kids these days who have a problem.

“I think a couple generations now are disconnected from nature, but certainly it becomes that much harder to leave the indoors when you can have the whole world at your fingertips,” she says. “I think the disconnection started a generation ago. [But] I think there’s this new level of anxiety and this new kind of urgency leading the quest for real lived experiences, and so in some ways, maybe this youngest generation will be the beneficiaries of this anxiety because we’re learning better.”

Williams, who wrote the book after moving from Boulder to

Washington D.C. and wondering why she felt depressed, says finding even little bits of nature in your everyday life, even in places as harried as the nation’s capital, will have a large impact. Her credo: “Go outside, often, sometimes in wild places.”

“I think I used to have a snobby standard for what nature is and that’s because I lived in the Rockies for so long. I thought it had to be some empty, secluded alpine peak. [But] I’ve come to have a much more generous definition of it,” she says.

Williams says being in nature “seems to work on a subconscious biological level,” and so not every trip needs to be framed as a mind-clearing and soul-affirming trek.

“You see kids, even babies, going out and playing on the grass.

They’re not consciously looking for a nature experience, and you see them become really alert, and they wake up,” Williams says. “Nature sort of wakes us up in this great way and provides so many fascinating things to look at and experience without much effort.”

In order to make those benefits last after you return to the rat race, Williams says the key is to stay curious.

“I think we can learn to cultivate a sense of beauty and a sense awe. Even though I live in a very urban environment now in D.C., I feel throughout the writing of this book I’ve become better at seeking out moments of beauty, and that’s a way to always have a little bit of connection to nature and to prolong the sense of connection.”

Boulder’s incognito street artist on a life of rebellion

en minutes before I turn onto Pearl Street, my phone vibrates. A message: “I forgot to ask... Will you keep my identity a secret?”

I’m en route to a cafe, meeting the person responsible for the impressionist cats, portraits and landscapes sprinkled around Boulder’s downtown electrical boxes, alleyways and forgotten doors — like the tri-color tabby’s face that stares at me from a brick wall on 17th Street.

“Of course,” I reply. Inside, I order a coffee and scan the crowd.

What does an incognito graffiti artist look like? Painted or dirty nails? Long hair, makeup? Grunge or hipster? Another vibration.

“Look for a pair of sunglasses resting on the table,” he (which he may or may not be) tells me.

I walk toward the back of the room and spot them: The glossy lenses staring up from a two-top, flanked by an elbow on each side. One hand loosely cups a mug, the other rests flat on the table. The person is leaning forward, shoulders slightly rounded, gazing down as though examining the creamy chai’s layered design.

As I approach, he looks up. “You must be Emma,” he says.

So this is what a graffiti artist looks like. Not what I expected.

More babysitter, less hoodlum. “You must be SMiLE,” I whisper as I sit down.

He glances around the room with fugitive eyes, nods, and we begin.

I ask him about his artwork — the intricate, layered paintings that decorate downtown, some legal, some illegal, all clearly influenced by the likes of Matisse and Van Gough and Bansky — and how he got started in the graffiti business.

“Well, I’ve been in art my whole life,” he says, rotating the mug around in his hand. After graduating high school in Boulder, “I was actually doing gallery shows, trying to get into the art world.”

But something didn’t quite click for him — it required conformity.

“It didn’t happen; it wouldn’t work for me in there. I’ve always been this very wild, rebellious person,” he says. “And you know... you have to harness your strengths in life.”

He won’t tell me the kind of art he practiced in the gallery setting. “I won’t get into that,” he says, eyeing me as though I might use the info to trace his identity.

Though creating public art without permission is technically illegal in Boulder, SMiLE (who wishes to remain anonymous) regularly paints portraits of animals and humans downtown.

He didn’t always go by SMiLE, his current pseudonym. The name came to be late in 2015, and though it was something of a spontaneous decision, he liked how it encompassed his art’s primary mission: to zap people on the street into the present moment, to deliver a quick spritz of happiness.

In SMiLE’s eyes, street art is a form of modern rebellion — demanding people be in the present moment while mainstream society draws them to worry about the future and the past. Being in the present, according to SMiLE, is the key to happiness.

SMiLE’s first painting was a cat, a simple one, which eventually evolved into a trademark of sorts.

He estimates about two dozen of them now look over the streets of Boulder.

“To be honest, I’m kind of a cat fanatic,” he tells me with an honest-person’s shrug. “I love cats, I grew up with them, I was an only child. I had a lot of family and good friends, but they’re not there at 9:15 p.m. on a Tuesday night. So I’d hang out with him, well, a couple cats, but one in particular for a long time. I painted him around town.”

SMiLE leans in a little closer, “Every single time I’m out, a cat comes up like, ‘What are you doing hanging out on Pearl this late?’ They’re curious. I kind of feel they also have this sense of running wild, out there at night.”

Soon after nixing traditional art, SMiLE left Boulder. Weaving through the humid streets of the Middle East and tip-toeing around Europe’s cobblestones, he used public art as a way to navigate and understand foreign cultures. “The whole time I was traveling, what stood out to me, and still does, is graffiti, street art, everywhere I go.” It was like a shared language he could tap into and use to gather tales of history and culture and politics and social realities, he says.

“Paris is the heart of it all,” he says, describing the place where the origin story of street stencil art began.

His voice grows incrementally louder as he retells lessons from French artistes de rue — about how during the 1968 French social revolution it was students that cultivated the power of stencil art. On street corners, they’d use little paintings to coordinate movements and rallies.

And after the French riots simmered down, painted stencil images continued to pop up as a form of antiestablishment expression, fomenting a surge of European stencil art that swept through streets in the ’70s. Eventually the style migrated to the U.S., and by the ’80s, stencil art became a popular manifestation of cultural identity and counter-cultural statements.

After traveling, “I knew my strength in art, and realized street art is a way to have social impact,” Boulder Weekly

SMiLE says. “Sure, I could’ve gotten into murals, but it’s corporate, it’s predictable. This incognito stuff, I felt like this is a strength.”

Back in Boulder, SMiLE began populating the city with his art — a way to infuse Boulderites with a healthy dose of make-you-reconsider-the-status-quo reminders. In a world that’s always rushing, he wants people to slow down; when society demands we fret about the future, he wants to reel you back to the present. “To me that’s powerful, having a modern rebellion.”

It’s dark and 21 degrees in Boulder, and SMiLE is huddled over his garage table. A light illuminates a sheet of glossy, flexible-but-durable paper in front of him. Using an exacto knife, SMiLE slices one of a thousand little slits in the sheet with surgical precision.

In an hour or so, once the streets calm down a bit

more, he’ll take this sheet and three others (also dotted with cuts and slices) downtown.

As he exhales, a cloud of fog dissipates. One more carve and slice, and it’s done. Each sheet is cut and treated as one layer or one color, of the finished painting. It used to be some paintings would require up to eight layers, but now SMiLE can do the same in four. He gathers his things — a few cans of spray paint, the four completed stencils — and gets dressed — a button-up shirt, slacks. Dressing like a typical party-goer on Pearl Street has helped him evade the curiosity of police late at night. Spray paint cans work well as a faux cell phone in the cover of darkness, he’s learned.

When he started painting the streets, choosing a place to arrange his art wasn’t as obvious a decision as it is for him now. In hindsight, he says it’s no surprise the Bob Marley portrait on the old folks’ home was covered up in less than three days. A music shop would’ve been a much better canvas.

Overall, SMiLE says he tries to paint “in spots I feel are respectable — not really on a business or where it’s new and shiny. I try to put them in places that look defunct and derelict.

“This is like my home,” he adds, gesturing down Pearl Street. “That’s a lot of it, adding something to our community that’s surprising people. People see it and wonder, ‘How did he do that? Whoa, did they come out in the middle of the night? Is it against the law? Did they get permission?’ And I like that sense of liminality, unknown.

“But typically, one person’s complaint is all it takes,” he says, “and they’ll cover it up.” SMiLE estimates about a third of his paintings are eventually removed. “It’s part of the game, I guess. I don’t like it to happen, but it’d part of the risk you take.”

You have to be strong and power through it, he admits, but he doesn’t deny it adds to the allure.

“About a hundred feet that way, that portrait in the little alley, it’s been there for six months. Just now I walked by and it’s covered over. It’s OK, I don’t even mind. I kind of smile, like hey, it was there for that see SMiLE Page 24

long. I know a lot of people liked it because they’d share it online. That’s just kind of part of the organic process. Some make it four days, some make it two years.

“One of the first ones I ever put up, on the side of Boxcar cafe, is still there. If I would’ve known it was going to make it that long, I would’ve planned it out, some big, giant cat or something. But you never know,” he says with a shrug. “It’s a thrilling, addicting type of thing.”

(I later asked a Boxcar Coffee Roasters barista about having a graffitied piece of art on the building’s exterior, and he told me, “I think it’s cool. I like it.”)

Once midnight passes, SMiLE approaches his brick canvas. He has a window between 12-2 a.m. After that, the bars close and hanging outside becomes too suspicious.

He places one stencil up on the wall and sprays smooth across the sheet. The glossy white hue settles on the exposed brick. He removes the stencil and steps back, waiting for it to dry. It can take between one and four minutes, depending on the color, before he can start the next layer. Because it’s white, SMiLE waits three minutes, then places the next stencil on top and sprays again. Within 15 minutes everything is done. He packs up, returns home, and wakes up with just enough time to get to the office by 8 a.m.

SMiLE imagines people walking down the street and seeing the Starry Night Flatirons painted on the Fox Theatre’s door, or Chief Niwot’s portrait on an electrical box in Settler’s Park, or bell hook’s face on the side of Falafel King’s white brick wall. “The world is pretty locked-down,” he says. “We don’t ever feel our eruptions; at least it’s rare in our culture nowadays. ... They see something that is illegal and they like it; they get excited and that kind of helps turn them. They’re like, ‘Huh, maybe all law-breaking isn’t bad.’ So, I think it gives them the impression like: ‘Hey, there’s someone with their hand up, too.’ Loosen up. The system is getting too tight.”

He takes a deep breath. “Look. I don’t have a very good car. I live in a dump. I work a poor-man job and it sort of evolved into what I’m doing. You make a commitment to do certain things, and unless you’re wealthy you’re gonna have to short yourself elsewhere.” He looks down at his now-empty chai mug. “Where I’m at now, it’s worth all I’ve got.”

We leave the cafe and SMiLE walks me down the block to the Pharmaca building. A black-and-white cat with yellow eyes is painted on the lower southeast corner of the exterior. Someone else has added a soft red mark between its ears.

I’d been in Pharmaca before, to ask the two women behind the counter what they thought about having the cat painted on their building. “I love it,” one said before I even finished my question. “It adds culture, you know?”

When I stopped a pedestrian passing Pharmaca to ask how they felt when they saw the cat, they told me, “It’s quaint.” Then they took a closer look and said, “I guess I didn’t really notice it before.”

Another storefront manager, one who has a pizza-box-sized SMiLE portrait on the stairway that leads to his office door, told me, “In my personal belief, do I enjoy seeing artwork walking down the street? Absolutely.

“It creates vibrancy to any community when you see real artists placing art on any medium they choose. I don’t prefer going to an art gallery; I prefer the organic stage of what the art may be. That is a talented artist who did that. I have no issues with that, personally.” No one, as far has he knows, has complained about SMiLE’s art. “That’s the thing, would you prefer to see a plain brick wall?”

“When they see my art, I want them to be startled,” SMiLE explains, gesturing toward the Pharmaca cat. “They’re thinking about whatever the heck — their cat or their sick grandma or their grades or whatever — you know, something where they’re not present. I want them to see a painting and become present.”

When we leave Pharmaca, I ask SMiLE if he’s ever been caught. In Boulder, any graffiti or street art without permission is technically illegal. He tells me about a few close calls, but he’s never been caught. Ultimately, “They don’t care,” he says and we agree the police probably have bigger fish to fry.

SMiLE starts walking again. “I’m a pretty present person, for better and for worse. This is kind of like a way to help people join in,” he says in stride. “Like, come on into the moment. Hopefully, when people are present they’re happier. They’re gonna go back to thinking about their cat or grandma or whatever, but just for that moment to help them get present, I think that is the essence. That is what I get when I see street art, and that’s what I want to share.”

Before he says goodbye, SMiLE looks up at the sky. “I’d like to stay incognito forever. Eventually I’d like to live in Paris or Rome, part time. I know that sounds rich, but all I want to do is paint in the streets. Art inspires me.”

Quicksilver Baroque brings ‘Strange and Wonderful Music’ to Macky ‘Rock stars’ of the early music scene explore the music of the 17th century by Peter Alexander

ow many pieces of chamber music for two violins, trombone, bassoon and lute can you name?

None? Meet Quicksilver, a Baroque ensemble specializing in the music of the 17th century: They can not only name them, they play them.

Quicksilver brings that combination, plus pieces that call for viola da gamba, harpsichord, organ and lute to Macky Auditorium on Friday, April 20 for the CU Presents Artists Series. Their program, titled “Strange and Wonderful Music of the 17th Century,” includes pieces by composers you have probably never heard of, including Dario Castello, Antonio Bertali, Massimiliano Neri, Johann Schmeltzer, Matthias Weckmann and Johan Rosenmüller.

It says something that the best-known composer on the program is Johann Kaspar Kerll.

Violinist Julie Andrijeski, co-director of Quicksilver with fellow violinist Robert Mealy, relishes the unknown aspect of the 17th-century repertoire. “We love bringing music that people haven’t heard,” she says. “Sometimes we haven’t heard it before we discover it in manuscript or in a library and play though it.

“There are a lot of manuscripts online, and we do a lot of combing of those archives. We love finding things that nobody’s done before, and we’ve found some real gems.”

That is one reason Quicksilver has turned to music of the 17th century — the opportunity to find music that is largely unknown to players and listeners alike.

Another is the sense of virtuosity that pervades the music. “There’s so much virtuosity in this music for every instrument in our group — the strings as well as the dulcian, which is an early bassoon, and the trombone,” Andrijeski says. “So it fits us well and we have an affinity for it.”

Whichever it is, you probably feel quite firmly that you’re right and the other two groups are, depending on your temperament and the number of adult beverages you’ve had that day, intellectually feckless or spiritually hopeless. Traditional thinking is that we won’t know which camp has it right until after we die, but tradition can suck it. It takes an exactly equal amount of blind faith to believe in a supreme being or meaning to life as it does to claim to know with certainty that neither exists, so the only logical choice is to admit that no one knows what happens when we die and join the ranks of the devout agnostics.

Despite that elegant proof, I suspect people will continue to debate theology until either God herself or the Flying Spaghetti Monster sits down with Ellen for a nice chat. Until then, all anyone can hope for is more respectful debate and less suicide bombing. More charity and less evangelizing. More love and less lunatic zealotry. Going to a Place Where You Already Are is a sanguine step in that direction.

Penned by the “It”-girl theater and TV writer of the moment, Bekah Brunstetter, of This Is Us fame, Going to a Place Where You Already Are wears Brunstetter’s Christian upbringing on its sleeve. Thankfully, it does so more like a happy face button and less like a yellow Star of David or pink triangle, and its message is more “be good and good things will happen” than “live in fear or suffer for eternity.”

T

he art of filmmaking can be tedious, admits director and producer Susan Polis Schutz.

Projects can take years to complete, and after finishing her seventh film in mid-2017 she was ready for a break.

But then she heard about the Voices of Our City Choir on a local news program in San Diego, and she knew she had to start filming her new documentary, The Homeless Chorus Speaks, right away.

“Their music was so moving and it was just an incredible story,” says Schutz, a longtime Boulder resident, who now spends a lot of her time in San Diego.

The documentary follows musicians Nina Deering and Steph Johnson as they recruit members for the choir by walking the streets of San Diego, asking people experiencing homelessness if they enjoy music or play an instrument. But neither is a prerequisite to join the choir. All are welcome.

The duo created the choir in 2016 in response to the growing California housing crisis. Latest estimates put San Diego’s homeless population at 9,160, the fourth largest in the nation according to a congressional report, following New York, Los Angeles and Seattle.

“Singing provides a positive sense of community and solidarity for people facing extreme hardships,” the choir’s website states. “It reduces stress, heightens awareness, empowers minds, strengthens bodies and sets the stage for peace and healing.”

The group performs covers of famous songs like “Amazing Grace,” “We are Family” and “Lean on Me,”

in addition to original music written by Deering and Johnson.

“When I sing ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow,’ you just forget all of your problems, you forget all of your stress and hurts and pains,” Janet, a choir member, tells the camera.

“It’s like I’m in another world.”

The group rehearses once a week and performs up to 15 times a month. Since its inception, the choir has helped 27 members secure housing.

“The stories are so compelling and so sad,” Schutz says. “And yet the choir is so positive.”

Throughout the film, Schutz interviews 14 different choir members from all walks of life. Some have jobs,

some don’t. Some have master’s degrees, others experienced horrific trauma as victims of abuse, rape or hate crimes. Others have disabilities or have been in and out of mental health facilities. There’s a veteran, a poet, a meth addict and a family of 10 who all live in one tent.

“I really got a cross section of the population,” Schutz says. “But they all said, ‘You’re only seeing a small part of what we’re like. You’re only seeing the homeless part, but we all have our stories, we all have our reasons for being homeless.”

With a nine-month production schedule, there was

an urgency to this film that Schutz didn’t have on previous projects. “Homelessness is such an emergency and tragedy in the country right now,” Schutz says. “I wanted people to know that homeless people are just like you and me, they are just like everybody, and how horrible and inhumane they are treated.”

Filming started in late August 2017 in the midst of a deadly Hepatitis A outbreak in San Diego that primarily affected the homeless population. Easily spread in unsanitary conditions, through fecal contamination or contact, the City has been admittedly short of public restrooms for years. All said and done, San Diego County Health and Human Services reported almost 600 cases, including close to 400 hospitalizaMichele Zousmer tions between September 2017 and the end of January 2018.

My only advice, other than on a human level and treating them well, is to start a grassroots movement and only elect politicians that care about this.”

It’s not only a problem facing San Diego, she admits. According to the Denver Metro Homeless Initiative, there were just over 5,000 people experiencing homelessness in the seven metro-area counties in 2017. It’s estimated that there are 1,800 in Boulder.

“I guarantee if I made this movie in Boulder or Denver, I would get the same type of results,” Schutz says. “Every place could have a choir where these people can feel like human beings, at least for part of the day.”

As a polar adventurer, Eric Larsen has spent two decades exploring the most remote and extreme environments on the planet. He also lives in Boulder and is hosting the second annual Get Wild to Stay Wild Earth Day celebration. Enjoy carnival games, gear giveaways, a speaker series, adventure photo exhibit, a live DJ and of course great food and drinks, all in support of local nonprofits working in natural resource conservation, open space and public lands advocacy. The event is free and open to the public.

One Tree Planted, a Vermont-based nonprofit, is hosting a community tree-planting day at Fourmile Canyon. The Fourmile Fire in 2010 burned 160 homes and left whole mountainsides scorched and without vegetation. Fourmile Canyon has experienced flooding and landslides in the subsequent years. Thousands of trees have been lost as a result of multiple disasters. Planting trees and re-vegetating helps stabilize the soils on steep slopes, improves habitat and contributes to improved water quality in the rivers. Celebrate Earth Day at Ollin Farms with a community day of planting. There will be a variety of planting activities, including the installation of Ollin’s new 25-tree plum orchard, Honeycrisp apple planting in a new research area and a creek restoration project led by the Lefthand Watershed Oversight Group aimed at increasing the health of the creek ecosystem. This is an educational, hands-on, family friendly event. Planting activities will wrap up around 2 p.m. Stick around for some social time and refreshments.

The Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities closes its 42nd theater season with Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George, directed

by Rod A. Lansberry. Inspired by the painting, “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” by Georges Seurat, Sunday in the Park with George merges past and present into beautiful, poignant truths about life, love and the creation of art. This moving piece won a Pulitzer Prize and was nominated for an astounding 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Performances are Tuesday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m., with matinees on Wednesdays at 1 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m., through May 6.

Oh yeah, while you weren’t looking, they made a whole movie based on a video game in which big animals punch buildings. Literally everything will one day be turned into a movie. What’s near you right now? A box of cereal? “Director Martin Scorsese brings you Robert DeNiro as Grape and Leo DiCaprio as Nuts. This fall, get ready for some loose bowels!”

Point is, if they’re willing to spend $120 million making a movie where The Rock plays a primatologist who yells “George!” at an albino monkey who makes a penetrative sex joke, we better get a goddamn mega-budgeted Magilla Gorilla movie with Daniel Day-Lewis coming out of retirement to method act the titular voice-over role. I’m standing firm on this one.

Rampage pitches a tent in the uncanny valley between Mount Schlocky Good Time and Mount Gritty Disaster. The Rock plays Davis Okoye, a man whose ongoing feud with all clothing manufacturers on the planet means he will never wear a shirt in which his nipples aren’t more visible than airplane landing beacons. He’s a former Special Forces dude who now makes the same single gesture in sign language at a gorilla a thousand billion times.

An evil corporation put genetic editing tech into cans on a space station, which crashes. George the poorly pigmented primate, a wolf and a crocodile all get exposed to the bad science juju and become impossibly large and quasi-unkillable. For some fantastically nonsensical reason, the mustache-twirling CEOs of the Megadick Corporation use the former Sears Tower to broadcast a frequency that attracts the monsters. Then, just like in every third movie, Chicago gets treated like an artery after horking down one of its signature hot dogs. Whatever this city did to Hollywood to warrant it’s repeated Blagojevich-ing on screen, it was likely Rahm Emmanuel’s fault.

When the film finally gets to the part where the big animals punch buildings, which was again the entire concept of the movie, it’s fine. Although, the only thing that pleasures VFX folks more than sodomizing Chicago is apparently having a big ape fight a big lizard. There’s nothing new here, other than The Rock sweating a lot in the general vicinity.

The big problem is that the movie has the audacity to both attempt character development and to let Jeffrey Dean Morgan refer to himself as a “cowboy” in every single line of dialogue. Making a quality B-movie is actually quite hard, and Rampage sure feels like nobody told director Brad Peyton what it was he was making. I’ll tell you what he wasn’t making: the Magilla Gorilla movie this broken world so desperately needs.

Listen, we are damned to live in an era where studios feel more comfortable tying their fortunes to semi-recognizable creative content than experimenting with original fare. Fine. Can we at least pick fun, semi-recognizable, creative content? And can we at least ditch the labored, gritty attempts to “ground” fantastical bullshit in some silly measure of realness? Embrace a goofy tone, take a unique angle and choose the right properties. Put a talking gorilla in a bow tie and top hat, and in doing so, liberate us all from the sad oppression of reality!

Alex Cox returns to IFS to decode ‘The Prisoner’ by Michael J. Casey

W

ho is Number One? So asks Number Six, the ON THE BILL: I Am (Not) a Number: Decoding prisoner, played by actor and The Prisoner. 7:30 p.m. April show co-creator, Patrick 20 & 21, International Film McGoohan. At 13 years old, he was completely taken by the show’s premise of surveillance and control — its puzzle box allure and its famously unsatisfying conclusion, one that irritated viewers for its resistance to be filed, indexed, stamped, briefed, debriefed or numbered.

“It’s incredible,” Cox tells Boulder Weekly. “It’s the best episodic television series ever. It’s the most puzzling, and the most complete in a weird way, too.”

Mysterious in setup and execution, The Prisoner follows Number Six as he tries to escape The Village — an idyllic seaside town populated by what seems to be former government agents.

“There’s nothing irrelevant in it,” Cox continues. “Nothing that isn’t interesting and doesn’t have something to do with the larger whole; even when it contradicts itself.”

As McGoohan has pointed out in multiple interviews, all the secrets to The Prisoner are contained within the show’s 17, 50-minute episodes; and the subject of Cox’s latest book, I Am (Not) a Number: Decoding The Prisoner.

For the book, Cox went back through the series, this time viewing the episodes in the order they were shot, not broadcast. In 1967, The Prisoner episodes were oddly jumbled: episode two, “Free For All,” was broadcast as episode four and episode six, “Once Upon a Time,” was broadcast as episode 16. Cox’s approach brings a new level of coherency to an already rich and fascinating series.

“It’s visually original and striking, and hasn’t aged,” Cox says. “It’s a frightening, frightening series about science, technology and surveillance.”

And, as Cox points out, The Prisoner was well ahead of its time when it came to the casting of women: not as love interests, but as “strong, interesting and often menacing characters.”

Cox plans to delve into all of this when he presents “Decoding the Prisoner” at the International Film Series on Friday, April 20 and Saturday, April 21.

“I’m going to show two shows and clips,” Cox explains. “The first night, I’m going to look at three different version of the introduction to the series and how it changed. And then we’re going to watch the complete episode ‘Free For All.’” On Saturday, Cox plans to look at The Village in which Number Six is trapped, and how it operates as “a scientific experimentation holiday camp.”

“Some of the stuff that happens in it is terrifying,” Cox says. “There’s never been a television series where the hero is frequently threatened with a lobotomy.”

Even more frightening, The Prisoner was merely a harbinger of things to come.

As Cox points out, “the tiny world Number Six was trapped in is now the prison we all inhabit.”

It’s also a damn fun show to watch and talk about; if it weren’t, we would’ve forgotten it long ago.

Remarkable eats and deals lure diners up the Diagonal for Longmont Restaurant Week

T

here was a time when nobody thought about “dining” and “Longmont” in the same sentence.

“When I was growing up, my parents always had to drive to Boulder for a date night dinner,” says Karen Stallard, membership director of the Longmont Chamber of Commerce.

However, this is not your Mom’s and Dad’s municipality. “If you haven’t been to Longmont and dined here in the past year or two, you really don’t know Longmont,” she says.

“So many new food and drink options have opened that people in Longmont and in Boulder don’t know about,” says Leah Winkler, event and program director for the Chamber.

That lack of awareness was the spark that led to the inaugural Longmont Restaurant Week — actually 10 days, from April 20-29. Winkler says that more than 42 Longmont restaurants, bakeries, breweries and pizzerias stepped forward to feature multi-course prix fixe meals, food specials and sipping experiences priced at $18.71.

The cost is to honor the year Longmont was founded and to make this showcase of the food scene affordable and accessible.

What will $18.71 get you? At Samples World Bistro, it’s a meal of roasted Brussels sprouts with bacon, a short rib poutine burrito and a Wibby Downtown Hop, while Next Door American Eatery dishes a wild Coho salmon burger with cucumber relish, sesame aioli, garlic smashed potatoes and

Kara dispensed with a few “myths” about Longmont, especially for Boulder diners. First, Longmont is close, only a 15 minute drive away.

You’ll spend more time than that driving in circles around Boulder’s Downtown Mall trying to find a spot.

Parking in Longmont is “much less of a hassle,” Kara says.

Longmont’s event is inspired by winter and spring restaurant weeks that have become hugely popular in Denver, Boulder and Fort Collins, but with some only-in-Longmont twists.

April 21’s Food Truck Pair-Up to benefit Longmont Food Rescue is a three-course, $18.71 feast with sips from Left Hand Brewing Company, St. Vrain Cidery and Longtucky Spirits, and appetizers from three local food trucks: Summit Tacos, Yolk’n Around, and The G-Spot Noshery.

Restaurant weeks have tended to focus on bistros, trattorias and finer dining establishments, but Longmont welcomed any hospitality business that asked to be part of the events. For instance, Longmont’s long-standing Blackjack Pizza delivers a family-offour pizza deal, and La Momo Maes Bakery, 900 S. Hover Road, offers a friends’ get-together deal of three large specialty coffees and one fruit and cheese ring.

The dining week has multi-course meals to satisfy any dietary approach.

At Breakers Grill, it’s a Caesar salad plus a six-ounce prime rib with baked potato, horseradish and au jus topped off with apple pie. At Bin 46 Craft Bar & Restaurant, the vegan and glutenfree feast features beet tartare, an entrée of roasted Aspen Moon Farm spaghetti squash, acorn squash, carrots and butternut squash with coconut cream and pomegranate, and mango brûlée for the finale.

Challenges, opportunities lie ahead for Longmont Food Rescue after first year of helping save the city’s food

Many just send it to the landfill. More evolved communities connect food suppliers with food banks, and cans of beans and hearts of palm find new homes.

But in truly evolved food communities, you’re likely to find magical food fairies riding on bicycles, trucking a trailer full of fresh food rescued from the trash to people and groups across town.

Despite the proliferation of food waste awareness and of food rescues (like the Food Rescue Alliance, of which Longmont Food Rescue is a member, that provides assistance to groups around the country), Mahoney says education is the first step in reducing food waste.

“We’re coming to a realization that the food system right now currently is not sustainable and even though there are so many services out there, the need [to reduce food waste] has grown year after year, so something is not quite matching up,” Mahoney says.

Mahoney and the other Front Range food rescues are hosting the annual Forward Food Summit on April 28, and they’ll be concentrating on the intersection of gentrification and food scarcity — how pricing lower income people out of their longtime neighborhoods pushes them into areas that have less access to healthy, affordable food. Panels at the summit will seek solutions for this issue, which no doubt affects plenty of Front Range communities, but Mahoney see LONGMONT Page 48

says it’s a complicated problem that will require people to plunge deep into how their food choices, however innocuous seeming, affect people.

“One example is community gardens can actually be like gentrifying a neighborhood because it takes up land or it makes the property surrounding it a lot more expensive,” Mahoney says.

Longmont represents a unique testing ground for the concepts espoused by the Longmont Food Rescue. On the one hand, Mahoney says “people are involved here, they really are,” and recounts all the advocates for political, environmental, animal rights and other causes she’s come across in her year in the city’s nonprofit space. On the other hand, only one grocery store in Longmont currently donates food seven days a week. Restaurants still produce thousands of pounds of wasted food every year. And, Mahoney says, there are challenges presented by the community itself.

“It might be one of those issues, you know Boulder County seems like they might be attuned to it or they’re all about composting or sustainability, but when you dig down to it, they’re really not,” Mahoney says.

That’s not meant as a slight; it’s validation of the quest to educate people in the community about what it really means to be part of a food system.

Mahoney says there are other food rescues that have easier times navigating their communities; it might be that because Longmont and Boulder County are so big, and so relatively wealthy, that there is a disconnection between food producers and those in need.

But Longmont Food Rescue is finding creative ways to get their message before community members, to hasten their education. Once a month, the group hosts a “produce in the park” event, where food is procured from a local farm or store, and people can come to their stand at a rotating park and take food for free, no questions asked.

“It’s just a great gathering of different people from all walks of life,” Mahoney says. “It’s homeless individuals, homeless families that are showing up, to people that pick up for their neighbor because they know their neighbor is housebound. ... And then you have the folks who maybe are just walking through the park, and we start up a conversation with them and they say, ‘Oh no, I don’t need that food.’ But it’s a good conversation-starter to be like, ‘When you say that, you’re perpetuating the notion that you’re above someone who quote-unquote needs that food.’”

Mahoney encourages everyone, of all means, to visit and take food from the park events, because it’s meant to be a wholly communal experience — though Longmont Food Rescue does direct most

of their regular deliveries of rescued food to people of lesser means.

One benefit of a food system that still hasn’t embraced salvaging as much food as possible is that there’s plenty of room to grow. Mahoney says her goal is to get every grocery store in Longmont to shift to seven-day-a-week donations; currently only Whole Foods manages to do that. Mahoney says, “We don’t really care who they donate to either,” because it could ultimately mean thousands of pounds of saved food annually.

“I mean, if you go behind grocery sites and you see the dumpsters, they’re still overflowing,” Mahoney says. “They really rely on the falsehood of their liabilities. But there’s really great national and state laws that protect any kind of donor, including the grocery stores.”

The Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act protects people who donate food they believe to be in good condition from liability should the food turn out to be bad. In the 22 years since its creation, Mahoney says there have been no challenges to it, indicating liability is an excuse for many potential donors.

Too, Mahoney says, grocery stores are escaping the liability issue while also touting their greenness by composting wasted food. “A lot of businesses are picking up the idea of composting as the new thing, but through that whole movement, people have forgotten that before composting comes the really important step of donating that food,” Mahoney says. “So when they compost, they think they’re doing really good, and they’re promoting their business as being sustainable, but they’re really missing the point. We’re trying ... to say, ‘Hey, composting is great, but if you’re composting, you’re missing one really important step before that, which is donating.”

But change starts at the individual level, and Longmont Food Rescue is practicing that principle through the Fresh Food Connect program. People can sign up at freshfoodconnect.org, and a member of the team will pick up excess produce from home gardens via an electric tricycle and trailer.

And to ensure that community members who are not turned onto these issues are aware of their work, Longtucky Spirits, Left Hand Brewing and St. Vrain Cidery are hosting the Food Truck PairUp on Saturday, April 21 from 4-9 p.m. at St. Vrain Cidery. It’s a part of Longmont Restaurant Week, and 100 percent of proceeds from drink sales will benefit Longmont Food Rescue.

It’s the ideal marriage of a burgeoning food scene and a nonprofit dedicated to getting food into the hands of those less fortunate. And for Longmont, it’s a sign of good things to come.

drink Know your brew: Double IPA Bring forth the bitter

T

hough India pale ales (IPAs) are still enjoying a multi-year residency atop the craft beer throne — placement unlikely to be usurped anytime soon — they weren’t always the darlings of the beer drinker’s portfolio. Originally developed by English brewers in the 18th century, IPAs didn’t catch on until the 1840s, when the British Raj was all the rage, and some marketing genius decided to start slapping the words “India pale ale” on their hoppy beers.

Jump forward another century, to 1975 to be exact, and we find San Francisco’s Anchor Brewing launching Liberty Ale. Though loaded with Cascade hops — an American-IPA staple — Liberty Ale bears little resemblance to the IPAs you’ll find today.

Enter the Double IPA (aka DIPA, IIPA and Imperial IPA), ostensibly created

by Vinnie Cilurzo in 1994 by accident when Cilurzo leaned on bitterness to mask any off flavors. Like Michael J. Casey penicillin and the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, the accident gave way to discovery, and a bigger, bolder, bitterer style of IPA was born.

In 2003, the Great American Beer Festival officially added the category to their competition.

Typically high in alcohol (7.75-10 percent ABV), the hallmark of the DIPA is full-bodied, hoppy flavor and a good deal of perceivable bitterness.

The benchmark still belongs to Cilurzo, with his Pliny the Elder from Russian River Brewing Company. It’s hoppy, it’s bitter, and it’s unbelievably balanced. And though most writings and descriptions of DIPA tend to focus on hops and bitterness, it’s the malt balance that makes or breaks the beer.

Not enough, and the beer becomes an astringent bitter bomb; too much, and you end up with treacle reminiscent of cough syrup.

Take Gravity Brewing’s Acceleration: deep gold in the glass, practically copper, with strong lacing, a soft nose and an open and inviting flavor. If served too cold, the brew holds back its secrets. Allow it to warm, and you’ll find a perfect balance of sweet and lively, malty and hoppy.

Heading over to the Front Range Brewing Company in Lafayette, their DIPA, Hogback, features 100 International Bittering Units. That might put some off, but Hogback has a surprisingly smooth mouthfeel and fruit-forward characteristics that make it an ideal beer for the warming months.

Both Acceleration and Hogback lean on bitterness for stylistic expression, but that isn’t the only way to approach DIPA. Ska Brewing’s BHC DIPA is big and juicy; Outer Range Brewing Co.’s Two Pound Tent — with its bright orange citrus and creamy mouthfeel — might be one of the best hazy DIPAs in the state; and Rails End takes their already grapefruit and tangerine-y DIPA and infuses it with blood oranges to make a Blood Orange Double IPA — an ideal beer for brunch, and an even better beer to encourage the mid-morning nap.

Few beers are as versatile as the IPA, and when you expand the canvas to the double, there are many discoveries to be found. Sure, they’ll bite, but you might like it.

The right way to celebrate 420

A

nother April 20 is upon us, aka 420 aka the day for getting baked out of your mind and eating approximately 10,000 bowls of Cap’n Crunch. Each year, marijuana enthusiasts light up all over the world to celebrate the unofficial holiday for cannabis culture. But why do we celebrate weed on Hitler’s birthday? Does it have something to do with a police code for smoking or numbers in that one Bob Dylan song? Why is Destiny via Flickr 420 associated with pot at all? And what’s the point of celebrating a holiday when you don’t know the history behind it?

You’re right, there is no point. All you need to know is that it started in the ’70s as an inside joke between a group of teenage stoners from a bougie-ass suburb outside of San Francisco. I could launch into the whole story about how the friend group, known as “The Waldos,” would meet up every day after school at 4:20 p.m. to hotbox a Chevy Impala and apparently they were super tight with the Grateful Dead, but it’s pretty irrelevant at this point. No one cares about a bunch of hippies wearing bell bottoms and smoking reefer 50 years ago.

No one really cares how the date got chosen.

The hazy history of 420 remains obscure for a reason. The only thing that matters is that it’s a special day for stoners. People from all walks of life come together to celebrate a shared philosophy: mari-

Let’s talk about the true glory days of 420: high school or college or whatever stage of your life that involved less responsibilities than you have now.

Prohibition was still a thing when I was younger, which made 420, like, the funnest thing ever. My best friends and I would stock up on snacks like we were preparing for the apocalypse. Mixed CDs burned with our favorite stoner music, like Sublime and Rebelution, played the soundtrack of our lives as we spent the entire day packing whatever strain of shake our dealer sold us that week into an assortment of bowls and blunts and homemade gravity bongs. Friends would drop by between classes, and you could barely tell who you were talking to through the dense cloud of smoke hanging over the living room. It didn’t matter if we had actual shit to do because celebrating our beliefs was more important than being sober.

But how you celebrate today probably looks a lot different than how you celebrated when your parents were still paying your cellphone bill. If you’re casual about it and only smoke on special occasions, you might partake in an after work sesh with your more stoner-y friends. Or maybe you just plan on liking whatever they post on Instagram instead of actually participating because weed turns you into a messy, paranoid weirdo. If you are a total pot head, though, you

will probably be coasting along, high all day because you’re not going to let little things like going to work or school get in the way of celebrating the holiest of high holidays. True enthusiasts have no limits on how they spend 420, no matter what week-day commitments they are expected to fulfill. Many people even clear their schedule altogether to join the thousands of others who gather for the annual 420 rally in Denver.

The intentions behind the rally have become controversial in recent years. Some believe the tradition no longer bears any political significance since everyday is 420 when you live in a legalizedmarijuana state, making a massive crowd of people smoking weed together in Civic Park seem more like a party and less like a noble act of rebellion.

The real activists (and the side of history that you definitely want to be on) see it as a way to stand together to fight against the biased laws that have disenfranchised entire communities and resulted in the mass incarceration of people of color.

Sorry to be a buzzkill, but while legalizing marijuana sounds revolutionary and all, it’s really just benefiting the same class of rich white people that control all the other industries. It doesn’t feel right to post artsy weed photos on social media for doing the same thing that others have literally died in prison over.

So while 420 may not hold the same place in your heart as it did when you were 19, the holiday is important for remembering where we’ve come from and the work that still needs to be done today. While so many of us have the privilege to get stoned in broad daylight with zero consequences, there are thousands of others who might never be able to make the transition from imprisonment to empowerment. So join a rally, spark a jay and initiate uncomfortable conversations with your white friends about how weed isn’t legal for everyone quite yet.

Senator Gardner and the art of the deal

Colorado Republican Senator Cory Gardner struck a mighty blow for marijuana legalization and states’ rights recently. If things play out like Gardner thinks they will, it may turn out to be the most important step toward legalization in a generation.

If. Here’s the deal. Literally.

Last week the Washington Post reported, and the White House confirmed, that Gardner had made a deal with President Trump regarding federal marijuana policy as it applies to Colorado and to the country as a whole.

Gardner said that Trump told him the federal government would not interfere with Colorado’s marijuana legalization of recreational marijuana and would take a similar hands-off policy with regard to the other eight states that have legalized recreational pot.

That in itself is a big deal. It essentially pulls the rug out from under Attorney General Jeff Sessions’s guerilla war on legal marijuana.

But Gardner got a second promise from

Trump as well: The Senator said Trump also told him he would support federalism-based legislation that will allow states to decide how they want to regulate marijuana without federal interference.

That’s a really big deal.

In return, Gardner promised to lift his blockade on Senate consideration of U.S. Department of Justice nominees.

Under Senate custom and rules, individual Senators have broad discretionary power to block consideration of executive branch appointees that require Senate approval.

Gardner had used that authority to embargo most Justice Department nominees since January, after Sessions revoked the Cole Memorandum, which set out a federal hands-off policy toward states that had legalized either recreational or medical marijuana.

Gardner went ballistic because Sessions had lied to him during his confirmation hearing regarding what he’d do about marijuana.

Sessions howled like a stuck pig, but Gardner held firm until he got Trump’s promises. Now that’s the art of the deal.

Gardner said he was working on a bill with Colorado Democratic Senator Michael Bennet, Massachusetts Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren, and Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul that he hopes will be moving soon.

Gardner told the Denver Post’s Cannabist website that in addition to taking a states’ rights/ federalist approach to marijuana, it would address issues like banking, taxes and research.

In an ideal world, the bill would remove marijuana from the list of controlled substances and start treating it like alcohol in federal law.

A more modest approach would write the Cole Memorandum into federal law and leave the issue of marijuana’s contemptible classification as a Schedule I controlled substance (like heroin) for another day, which might make the bill

easier to pass.

Trump has been known to change his mind in a heartbeat. So will he stick with the deal?

There are a lot of reasons to think he will: • There’s virtually no political downside for him. While the only two demographics that still oppose legalization are Republicans and Americans over 65, Trump isn’t likely to lose many Republican or geezer votes over pot.

• There’s a lot of political upside. Nationally, more than six in 10 Americans support legalization; support among millennials is more than 70 percent in most polls. Millennials have been trending Democrat; Trump and the GOP generally will need to win more millennial support to avoid a blow-out in the 2018 mid-terms and to keep 2020 competitive. Leading on marijuana legalization could get them some. Opposing legalization could lose them a lot.

• Marijuana is becoming an issue in the midterms. Candidates are running on marijuana legalization and getting traction on the issue. By supporting a states’ rights approach to legalization, Trump is putting himself on the popular side of the issue. And his support helps Republican candidates with tough races in blue and purple states defuse an issue that could kill them.

• States’ rights is an idea that matters to Republicans, because most of them favor de-centralized government. Pairing states’ rights with marijuana could make the idea of marijuana legalization more palatable to them, and the idea of states’ rights more palatable to Democrats.

• Trump keeps his promises. During the 2016 campaign, Trump promised to take a states’ rights approach to marijuana. Whatever you think of Trump, he’s been better than a number of recent presidents about keeping his promises.

He doesn’t have any good reason not to keep his promise to Gardner. And a lot of good ones to keep it.

I’ve also had constipation problems all my life. Question: I saw my doctor recently, and he tried to link my enjoyment of anal sex to my constipation. While many people engage in anal play while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and most emerge unscathed, uninfected and un-constipated, FIST, getting fucked up before fisting is not a butt sex best practice. A fucked-up top can quickly become an out-of-control top, and a fucked-up bottom can be numb to feelings of discomfort that mean “slow down,” “stop and add more lube” or “stop altogether.”
