Check the facts (Re: “Libya and Lockerbie,” Letters, March 31.) Peter Johnson’s letter poohpoohing my assertion that the CIA (aka the Christian Investment Authority) has a long history of utilizing narcotics in its international skullduggery deserves a brief reply.

Since space is limited, I suggest that Johnson, and other interested Boulder Weekly readers, consult the following books: The Politics of Heroin: CIA Complicity in the Global Drug Trade, Alfred McCoy, 1972 (revised several times); Dark Alliance: The CIA, the Contras and the Crack Cocaine Explosion, Gary Webb, 2003; Whiteout: The CIA, Drugs and the Press, Alexander Cockburn, 1999; American War Machine: Deep Politics, the CIA Global Drug Connection and the Road to Afghanistan, Peter Dale Scott, 2010; and The Crimes of Patriots: A True Tale of Dope, Dirty Money, and the CIA, Jonathan Kwitny, 1987.

McCoy and Scott are, or were, academics. The other authors are investigative journalists.

Instead, consult the spiritualists.

Despite our nation’s relentless and depressing “jobless recovery” (or perhaps because of it), spirits are on the rise. Overall sales of liquors were flat during the Great Recession, but popped up by 2.3 percent last year to a total of more than $19 billion.

Within that general number, however, lies a more telling economic indicator: consumer spending on the cheaper stuff is down by nearly 2 percent, while the super-premium goods had an 11

These swells buy spirits from the locked cabinets of exclusive liquor dealers, taking home a case of, say, the 2005 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti. It’s $4,000 a bottle. Perhaps the redundant use of the name Romanée-Conti doubles its price, but if you have to ask what it costs, you’re in the wrong ZIP code.

Yeah, times are hard for most folks, with no relief in sight, but I’m sure that you take great comfort in knowing that those at the top are always in high spirits. Don’t you?

Licensed to steal Although I am one of those who is unalterably opposed to the idea of allowing a corporation the same rights as a living person, and find that the recent Supreme Court decision regarding same is a travesty of real justice, I recognize that it is the law of the land nonetheless.

Given the above, corporations — at the very least — should also be required to accept the same responsibilities as those expected of a person; it should be a good citizen and an honorable, ethical member of the community. In the case of international corporations, that community has to be defined as the world.

In actual practice, however, corporations are the opposite of good citizens in many if not most instances. They bribe politicians to write laws that cheat society on a mammoth scale, most significantly by allowing them to avoid paying many of the very real costs incurred in conducting their businesses.

What economists refer to as “externalities” are left out of price calculations.

This includes the social and environmental costs of destruction of valuable resources, pollution, the burdens on society of workers who become injured or ill and receive little or no health care, the indirect funding received when companies are permitted to pay employees less than a living wage, provide substandard working conditions and extract natural resources from public lands at less-than-market prices.

Additionally, allowing corporations to domicile offshore to avoid taxes is to allow corporations to evade taxes, and if that is considered wrong for living persons, it should be considered wrong for corporations. Further, most corporations are dependent on public subsidies, exemptions, massive advertising and lobbying campaigns, and complex transportation and communications systems that are underwritten by taxpayers; their executives receive inflated salaries, perks and “golden retirement parachutes,” which are written off as tax deductions.

Under proper accounting, all the above externalities would be factored into the costs of products. Those goods and services that are inherently “clean” would also be the cheapest. Consumers would pay a premium for products that strain the environment and society: The price would include funds to correct the damage. In a truly “free” market economy, these very real costs would be “internalized” — included. But they are not. Why? Because accounting firms are not obligated to enforce sound accounting principles; they only need adhere to those required by laws — which are written by politicians who are dependent on the corporatocracy.

rights of individuals, but none of the responsibilities. In fact, they are licensed to steal. From an economic standpoint, there is simply no other word for it.

They plunder the poor and future generations in order to further enrich the wealthy. This is a reprehensible situation … inherently unjust, unethical and, at this point in our nation’s history, intolerable. This must change.

Tax meat and dairy With the annual tax filing date upon us, pundits are searching for ways to make our tax code fairer and more reflective of our social incentives and burdens. In this regard, there is a growing interest in a tax on meat, eggs and dairy products designed to curb the selfdestructive health impacts of their consumption and to effectively compensate society for the associated devastating environmental impacts.

The concept is hardly radical. We already pay similar taxes on tobacco and alcohol products. A number of states have or are considering imposing taxes on soft drinks and other junk foods.

The revenue would reimburse the Medicare and Medicaid programs for treating victims of heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes and other chronic killer diseases that have been linked conclusively with consumption of animal products. It would pay for restoration of waterways and wildlife habitats that have been devastated by production of these items.

Mark Twain said that nothing is certain except death and taxes. Yet, the first can be deferred and the other reduced selectively by a tax on meat and dairy products that reflects the associated social costs.

Covering the cost of war Just as a “modest” proposal: I would like to suggest that our so-called “defense” budget could be covered by a heavy surtax on the profits of every international corporation currently investing in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is time for the Pentagon to begin handing out invoices for “services rendered,” and the tips to their “servers” should be huge.

School of hard knocks

T

he lessons our children learn often aren’t the ones we intend for them to receive. Such must be the case for student journalists at Overland High School.

Lori Schafer, a junior and editor of the Overland Scout, the school paper, wrote an article on March 8 about the death of a fellow student, Leibert Phillips, who died on Jan. 1 of a blood clot related to a fractured ankle he suffered during a school-sponsored wrestling tournament. Schafer included an interview with Phillips’ bereaved mother, Linda Kore, who shared her overwhelming grief at the death of her son.

“He was the love of my life,” Kore told Schafer. “He is my pride and joy.”

It was a brave interview to undertake, one that couldn’t have been easy for Kore — or for Schafer. Part of being an effective journalist is learning how to handle such sensitive and heartwrenching subject matter, and Schafer faced the challenge head-on.

Unfortunately for Schafer, Principal Leon Lundie seems to be more concerned about controlling the perception people have of his school than he is about ethics or educating student journalists. But let’s back up for a moment.

Lundie instituted a policy that enabled him to control the newspaper’s content. Why he felt the need to do this is uncertain. Perhaps he didn’t trust his students. Perhaps he didn’t trust the paper’s faculty adviser, Laura Sudik, to

do her job. Or perhaps he sought this level of control for the same reason that many bureaucrats do — because they can.

As reported by the Student Press Law Center (SPLC), Lundie did not approve Schafer’s article for publication, claiming that the issue of Phillips’ death was “too big” for a student paper. He also claimed that the article contained a factual error when it stated that Phillips’ death was related to the injury he received at the wrestling tournament — an injury that the school did not report to his mother.

The students, being good journalists, obtained a copy of the coroner’s report, which proved that Lundie was the one who had his facts wrong, not Schafer.

And then Lundie did what so many bureaucrats have done when faced with inconvenient truth. He went after the truth-tellers, pulling the plug on the newspaper and removing the faculty adviser from a post she had occupied for 14 years.

Put a dunce cap on that man, and make him sit in the corner!

When confronted about his actions, he attributed his decision to “budget concerns,” the SPLC reports.

from traditional journalism toward communications and “new media.”

These are excuses we’ve heard before. They were used to justify killing the University of Colorado faculty and staff newspaper, the Silver & Gold Record. They’re being used this week to try to eliminate CU’s journalism school.

Changing times, budget problems.

What a load of crap.

Fortunately, Overland High students didn’t take this assault on their rights lying down. Neither did SPLC or the Colorado chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ). Both organizations stepped up to support the student paper, bolstered by a Colorado law that protects students’ freedom of expression.

In a letter dated March 29, the board of directors for Colorado SPJ called for an end to Lundie’s policy of prior restraint on content, the immediate reinstatement of the paper’s faculty adviser and the publication of all regular Scout editions.

In response to the firestorm, the school district has decided that the Scout will be published at least through the end of the year and has reinstated the adviser — for now. Best of all, Schafer’s article will run. But what happens next year is anyone’s guess.

Let’s hope Lundie has learned a lesson through this and permanently scuttles his plans to kill the paper.

Otherwise, what will he teach students at Overland High? That power can dominate truth? That human grief and other human emotional needs are less important than image? That being in charge is more important than being right?

Of course, his actions may bring about unintended results. There’s nothing like adult hypocrisy to ignite idealism in a young person’s soul. This experience might well be the making of Schafer and her fellow student journalists, inspiring them to work harder, strengthening their commitment to the truth and hardening their resolve.

That wouldn’t be a bad thing. As the corporate machine gobbles up one independent newspaper after another and economic pressures make far too many newspapers sell out, sacrificing journalistic ethics for the bottom line, we’re going to need iron-willed, committed journalists to carry the flame of our nation’s only constitutionally protected profession into the future.

Doing the J school shuffle It was pretty amusing to watch (insert one of CU’s long administrator titles here) Jeff Cox, former CU Regent Jim Martin and Denver Post editorial writer Alicia Caldwell jostling for position regarding CU’s discontinuance of its journalism school during the April 8 broadcast of “A Colorado State of Mind” on Rocky Mountain PBS. With a straight face, Cox insisted that the “discontinuance” is really an effort to strengthen journalism education at CU, with something encouragingly called “Journalism Plus.” And then there was Martin, in his usual rambling, broken sentences, suggesting that discontinuance is a troubling sign, since good journalism usually results in good government.

Hey, we love you, Jim, you were often the voice of reason while on the board, you’re just not the best public speaker.

Still, he made his point, and it’s a point well taken. CU officials can crow all they want about this “discontinuance” being an unfortunate term, about this not being a budget-cutting exercise, about faculty retaining their positions, about dragging the J school into the 21st century. The real proof, unfortunately, won’t come for several years, when we look at how things have changed in the program in terms of faculty numbers, budget, course offerings and number of students.

You see, something like this can be a self-fulfilling prophecy. No matter what is decided now, the word is out that CU is “discontinuing” its journalism school because it’s not “first-rate,” to quote the chancellor himself. Talk about throwing one of your schools under the bus.

Do we really think that this type of national news is not going to hurt student recruitment efforts? How many students are going to want to attend now that such “messaging,” to borrow a term from the Dark Side, is out there?

This decision was a done deal when the “process” was announced last August.

Hopefully the line that Cox and other CU honchos are spouting about their professed dedication to continuing and improving journalism education at CU is not just hot air.

Martin would know. He sniffed this kind of thing out many times in his 12 years as a regent.

Boulder targets more dispensaries for closure

ine more medical marijuana businesses have received cease-anddesist orders from the city of Boulder this past week due to problems with their applications for a license.

City spokesperson Sarah Huntley told Boulder Weekly on April 12 that in addition to the six dispensaries that received cease-and-desist letters in early March, six more dispensaries, a grow operation and an infused-product business were sent similar letters on April 7.

By the end of the day on April 12, two of those dispensaries had successfully negotiated to have their license denial lifted, but another had been added to the list of those targeted for closure.

The businesses have 10 days to file an appeal with the city; those that do not must shut down.

The most common reasons for denying an application for a city license relate to zoning and background checks.

Boulder’s medical marijuana ordinance prohibits those “not of good moral character” from having a financial interest in or managing a dispensary; Huntley says having a felony conviction within the past five years is grounds for denying a license application. (Hourly employees are not subject to this restriction.) In addition, the ordinance does not permit dispensaries to operate within 500 feet of a school or day care center, or within 500 feet of three other dispensaries.

According to Huntley, the seven remaining businesses that are still under cease-and-desist orders (and the alleged reasons for the license denial) are: 14er Holistics (500-foot rule), Boulder MMJ (background check), Boulder Vital Herbs (500-foot rule), grow operation Colorado Bottling Company LLC (background check), The Greenest Green (500-foot rule), Lotus Medical (500-foot rule) and infused-product business Spoon Full of Sugar (background check and other alleged ordinance violations).

Huntley says those businesses that appeal will be scheduled for a quasijudicial hearing and will be allowed to

remain open pending the outcome of those hearings.

Huntley also told Boulder Weekly that city officials have reviewed 90 of the 117 applications that have been received. The fact that only 14 of those 90 applications have been denied is evidence that “the city is making every effort to work with these businesses that have applied, to bring them into compliance,” she says.

The 76 medical marijuana businesses that have been cleared in this first phase of review are not home-free yet, however. Huntley says they still have to work with officials to make sure they adhere to city building and fire codes.

Only one dispensary — Good Humor Meds — has been granted a city license so far.

Huntley says five of the six dispensaries that received cease-and-desist letters last month have filed appeals and have been allowed to stay open, although hearings have not been set for them yet. Those five dispensaries are 8th Street Care Center, Fresh Baked Dispensary, High Grade Alternatives, Southwest Alternative Care and Timberline Herbal Clinic.

Medical marijuana dispensaries that don’t comply with the cease-and-desist orders could get a visit from police.

Huntley told Boulder Weekly last month that no police action had been taken so far, “but we certainly could choose to go down that road if we felt like it was necessary at a later date.”

She also says dispensaries have suggested dealing with background check issues by removing the people in question from their positions.

“In some cases, businesses have called us and said, ‘What if I terminate the individual you have a concern about?’” she told Boulder Weekly. “In some cases, that could be a way to resolve the issue, if it’s somebody who’s not considered a primary owner. But if it’s an owner who has the issue, then we are telling businesses they would have to resubmit an application with new ownership information.”

CU receives tree recognition The University of Colorado Boulder is being recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation as a “Tree Campus USA” for excellence in tree management as well as student and community involvement.

The Arbor Foundation issues the Tree Campus USA designation to campuses that meet five requirements, including convening a tree advisory committee, creating a tree care plan, implementing a tree program, holding an Arbor Day observance and offering a service learning project.

CU-Boulder will be presented the Tree Campus USA designation and will celebrate Arbor Day with the planting of two Sweet Gum trees on Friday, April 15, from 11 to 11:30 a.m. on the grounds located across University Avenue from the Armory Building.

Speakers will include campus leaders, as well as forestry representatives from the state of Colorado and the city of Boulder.

The event is free and open to the public, and will be followed by refreshments and the opportunity to speak with professionals about tree care.

Since the late 1880s, when one of the first trees, a Plains Cottonwood, was planted near Old Main, CU-Boulder’s tree population has grown to more than 4,100 trees comprising more than 100 species.

numbers, the CU School of Law is seeing the highest number of applicants in its history.

Colorado Law currently has about 3,160 applications pending for its three-year, full-time program, up 12.7 percent over last year. The school will admit approximately 180 students for its incoming fall class.

The average drop in law school applicants, according to a recent online article in the ABA Journal, is about 11.5 percent. And as reported in the Yale Daily News, the Yale Law School — ranked the nation’s No. 1 law school — is experiencing a 16.5 percent decrease in applications.

Colorado Law, established in 1892, is a top 25 public law school.

It consists of approximately 500 students and offers dual degree programs in business, environmental studies, telecommunications and public affairs.

CU professor nominated to NSB President Barack Obama has nominated University of Colorado Distinguished Professor Carl Lineberger to serve on the National Science Board.

Lineberger is the E.U. Condon Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and is a fellow of JILA, a joint institute of CU-Boulder and the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

If confirmed by the Senate, as a member of the National Science Board Lineberger would help to establish the policies of the National Science Foundation and assist in advising the president and Congress on issues about engineering and science.

CU Distinguished Professor and JILA Fellow Carl Wieman was confirmed as associate director for science in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy last September, and former CU Chancellor G.P. “Bud” Peterson was nominated and appointed to serve on the National Science Board in 2008 by former President George W. FEDS IN COLORADO EXPLAIN WHY THEY’RE NOT TURNING UP HEAT ON DISPENSARIES

espite federal efforts in other states to crack down on dispensaries, feds in Colorado say they haven’t changed their tune on how they deal with medical marijuana and have no plans to do so.

They say they are focused on large-scale, illegal distribution and sales operations, not the individual patient or the dealer on the street corner.

While dispensaries seem to be a bit of a gray area, it seems that if federal officials in this state stick to 2009 guidelines set by the U.S. attorney general’s office, Colorado dispensaries that keep their noses clean should not attract the attention of federal prosecutors and drug enforcement officers. **** An Oct. 19, 2009, letter — referred to as the “Ogden memo” because it came from U.S. Deputy Attorney General David Ogden — has served as the law of the land when it comes to how the Obama administration intends to deal with medical marijuana in states where its use is authorized. (Marijuana remains illegal as a schedule I controlled substance under federal law.)

The Ogden memo lays out guidance for U.S. attorneys in states where medical marijuana is legal.

In an environment of limited resources, the memo says, the Department of Justice is primarily concerned about “significant traffickers of illegal drugs, including marijuana, and the disruption of illegal drug manufacturing and trafficking networks.”

The memo says federal resources should not be focused on “individuals whose actions are in clear and unambiguous compliance” with state marijuana laws, and it differentiates between the individual patient/ caregiver and large-scale operations, including questionable dispensaries hiding behind state laws.

“For example, prosecution of individuals with cancer or other serious illnesses who use marijuana as part of a recommended treatment regimen consistent with applicable state law, or those caregivers in clear and unambiguous compliance with existing state law who provide such individuals with marijuana, is unlikely to be an efficient use of limited federal resources,” the memo states. “On the other hand, prosecution of commercial enterprises that unlawfully market and sell marijuana for profit continues to be 14 April 14, 2011

an enforcement priority of the Department. To be sure, claims of compliance with state or local law may mask operations inconsistent with the terms, conditions, or purposes of those laws, and federal law enforcement should not be deterred by such assertions when otherwise pursuing the Department’s core enforcement priorities.”

The Ogden memo lays out several factors that, coupled with medical marijuana activity, would make conduct fall clearly outside the lines of “clear and unambiguous compliance” with state marijuana laws: • unlawful possession or use of firearms • violence • sales to minors • financial and marketing activities inconsistent with state law, including money laundering and financial gains/cash amounts that are inconsistent with state law • amounts of marijuana inconsistent with state law • illegal possession or sale of other controlled substances • ties to other criminal enterprises Many inferred, perhaps incorrectly, that the Obama administration’s Ogden memo softened the federal government’s stance on regulating marijuana in states that have authorized its use for medical purposes. **** Recently, Michael Ormsby, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Washington state, made headlines for notifying landlords of penalties they may face for leasing to dispensaries, and he threatened to take “quick and direct action” against operators of dispensaries. Washington voters approved a 1998 ballot initiative removing the state’s criminal penalties for “physician-prescribed” marijuana, Ormsby said in an April 6 press release, but state law does not allow for “marijuana stores.”

And in California, a Feb. 1 letter from U.S. Attorney Melinda Haag — referred to as the “Haag memo” — outlines concerns about Oakland creating an ordinance permitting “large-scale industrial marijuana cultivation and manufacturing” because it conflicts with federal marijuana laws.

Haag says in her memo that, after consulting with Attorney General Eric Holder and Deputy Attorney

General Ogden, it is clear that while the Department of Justice will not go after “seriously ill individuals” who use marijuana in a medically recommended treatment program under state law, “we will enforce the [Controlled Substances Act] vigorously against individuals and organizations that participate in unlawful manufacturing and distribution activity involving marijuana, even if such activities are permitted under state law.”

The latter clause raised the hackles of Colorado’s own Cannabis Therapy Institute, which on March 17 issued an e-mail warning to its stakeholders that the Haag memo marks a departure from the original Ogden memo and “says clearly that the feds will not look the other way on medical marijuana. The ‘Haag Memo’ states very clearly that the feds will continue to investigate, arrest and prosecute medical marijuana dispensaries in every state ‘regardless of state law.’”

The Institute surmised that ensuing Drug Enforcement Agency raids of dispensaries in California and Montana were prompted by the Haag memo.

“Maybe this will wake people up who think that it can’t happen here,” Kathleen Chippi of the Coloradobased Patient and Caregiver Rights Litigation Project was quoted as saying in the e-mail. **** Congressman Jared Polis, D-Colo., told Boulder Weekly that the medical marijuana industry has been a key economic driver in the state, and that the Ogden memo “gave some needed assurances that patients and legitimate business owners would not have to live in constant fear of DEA agents. This trust was quickly broken right here in Colorado.”

Polis was alluding to the DEA’s arrest of Highlands Ranch resident Chris Bartkowicz on marijuana charges in early 2010 after Bartkowicz told a TV station about his major basement marijuana grow.

“Technically, every dispensary in the state is in blatant violation of federal law,” Jeffrey Sweetin of the DEA subsequently told The Denver Post. “The time is coming when we go into a dispensary, we find out what their profit is, we seize the building and we arrest everybody.” see MARIJUANA Page 15

The incident prompted Polis to quiz Attorney General Eric Holder about how the feds determine whether someone is in “clear and unambiguous compliance” with state medical marijuana laws. At a May 13 hearing of the House Judiciary Committee, Polis pointedly asked Holder about Sweetin’s comments and whether they conform to the Ogden memo: “Do you agree that statements that could be reasonably taken as threatening to businesses that are legal in our state are, in fact, contrary to your stated policy?”

Holder replied that such statements are, in fact, contrary to the Ogden memo if such businesses are in compliance: “If the entity is, in fact, operating consistent with state law, and is not — does not have any of those factors involved that are contained in that deputy attorney general memo, and given, again, the limited resources that we have and our determination to focus on major traffickers, that would be inconsistent with what the policy as we have set it out.”

Polis says he didn’t feel like he got a clear response from Holder, and he notes that Sweetin was later promoted.

“It appears that a year later, via the Haag memo, I as well as all Coloradans have received an unambiguous response — that it is not the intention of the Department of Justice to respect our state’s laws,” Polis told Boulder Weekly.

But he insists that the Haag memo does nothing to change the feds’ approach to medical marijuana in Colorado. He says the DEA and his office continue to follow the guidance set by the Ogden memo.

According to Dorschner, each U.S. attorney has “a fair amount of discretion,” and the Haag memo applies only to the California district for which it was written.

“It has no bearing on what Colorado’s situation is,” he told Boulder Weekly. “It certainly doesn’t supersede the Ogden memo. It doesn’t clarify the Ogden memo. It only applies to Oakland. Nothing has changed in Colorado because of the issuance of that letter.”

Dorschner agreed that from a federal perspective, there is less protection for commercial distributors of medical marijuana than there is for individuals.

CU cops: Cracking down on 4/20 isn’t worth it

ver the years, University of Colorado at Boulder officials have made several attempts to curtail, break up and even prosecute participants in the 4/20 pot smokeout.

They’ve turned sprinklers on the crowd, even posted photos of smokers online in an attempt to identify them.

But in recent years, CU police seem to have taken a more hands-off approach, and that is expected to continue this week when the event returns.

Cmdr. Tim McGraw of the CU police told Boulder Weekly that there were “mixed reviews” on the use of sprinklers and online photos, which were intended to “thwart some of the momentum” of the event, in which cannabis smokers now gather on Norlin Quad at 4:20 p.m. on April 20 to partake in pot.

“A percentage of the public thinks we treat this far too lightly; other community members think we treat it too harshly,” he says.

Asked why authorities now seem to look the other way when the event happens, McGraw says “having a strict enforcement policy, frankly, doesn’t make a whole lot of sense for us.”

He explains that in Colorado, where minor pot offenses were decriminalized years ago, possession of up to two ounces of marijuana is not even a misdemeanor — it’s a class 2 petty offense that carries a Boulder Weekly

Asked how dispensaries could avoid drawing attention from the feds, he would only say that his office and the DEA follow the Ogden memo, its “clear and unambiguous compliance” standard, and its list of complicating factors that would make a dispensary noncompliant. If the DEA encounters a dispensary where one of those factors is at play, they will contact Walsh’s office for guidance, Dorschner says.

Dorschner says the Bartkowicz incident occurred before Walsh took office, and that initial reports that the Highlands Ranch resident could face up to 60 years in prison were not realistic. Walsh offered Bartkowicz a plea deal of five years in prison, which in Walsh’s analysis was a fair sentence, according to Dorschner.

Mike Turner, a Colorado spokesperson for the Drug Enforcement Agency, agrees that the Haag memo doesn’t change anything for Colorado dispensaries.

“There is no change in our status,” Turner told Boulder Weekly. “We don’t go after sick people.”

The situation in which the DEA would go after a dispensary is “if folks get way over the line” under the parameters set by the Ogden memo. He compared it to speeding while driving: Those going 20 miles per hour over the speed limit are more likely to get pulled over than those only a few miles per

maximum fine of $100, with no chance of jail time.

By comparison, McGraw says, the penalty for littering is up to $1,000.

He notes that it probably wouldn’t make sense to the community to assemble the number of officers needed to crack down on 10,000 people who showed up to an event, littered and then left. So why put together a similar police force for an offense that carries a penalty that is 10 times smaller than littering?

“It’s more of a social issue, frankly, than it is a police enforcement issue,” he says.

McGraw acknowledges that if people are walking across campus smoking a joint and encounter a police officer, “there would be a pretty strong likelihood that they’re going to get a ticket. But we’re not going to wade into the crowd or try to put a fence around people and then develop the probable cause that would be needed to show that everyone inside committed a violation. Given the low statutory status of this event, it makes no sense for us to dedicate resources to do that.

We also could likely create a bigger issue than the one we’re trying to resolve.”

McGraw did say police don’t want participants jumping on trampolines, slack-lining or doing similar

activities that could lead to injuries during 4/20. He says that in past years, the event has involved mostly medical calls, and police will be on hand to handle life safety/health issues.

“I’m certainly not saying that it’s carte blanche permission to go out and violate the law. I’m just saying that our point of emphasis is going to be elsewhere, in dealing with things that we can control and respond to,” McGraw says.

CU spokesperson Bronson Hilliard, who estimates that only about 25 percent of the 4/20 crowd is CU students, says the event — and media coverage around it — always prompts complaints from parents, lawmakers and donors, and detracts from productive contributions made by the university, like the 13,000 students engaged in community service.

“If the student element that participates in [4/20] … understood how this one single little event that feels like a good time in the sun works against every positive message about the institution that we try to put out there, I think they’d think twice about it,” Hilliard says. “I don’t think anyone here is against having a debate about drug laws or symbolic gestures calling into question the nation’s drug laws … But this is nothing but a giant party.

“I see a lot of heads, but not a lot of heavy discourse.”

Their next project isn’t one that’s energy-conscious, but it is taking the toxicity of chemicals into account.

One of the last steps in decontamination is to rid the water of bacteria and other pathogens that are present in high levels. Currently, the center uses gaseous chlorine to disinfect the water of these pathogens.

“It’s very effective but is extremely toxic to aquatic life and a huge safety risk to city staff and residents nearby, if we had a leak or tank rupture. That’s a low-probability event, but still a realistic risk scenario that we face,” Douville says.

The center uses a second gas to dechlorinate and remove residual chlorine, so that toxins aren’t released into the stream, but both of those gases will be replaced with a UV disinfection system.

“It’s a focused, targeted wavelength of high energy that only takes a matter of seconds to disinfect the wastewater and achieve compliance with our regulations,” Douville says.

It will take more power, but will be significantly safer to aquatic life and the staff in close contact with the chlorine gases. The project is currently out for bid. Douville says he hopes to start construction on the project this summer.

“For the last 25 years, we’ve been beneficially using the methane gas that we derive from treated solids.

As we break down and treat solids, a gas is formed that’s primarily methane,” Douville says. “Methane has a combustion value, and we use a system called cogeneration to make electricity.”

That system generates an average of 20 percent of the facility’s power needs, and it keeps methane from being released in the atmosphere.

“Not all communities do that.

We’re on the exception end of things,” Douville says. “Normally what a facility would do is burn the gas, so they’d flare it, ignite it and combust it, and it would go off in the atmosphere as carbon dioxide and heat. Boulder made the commitment to produce electricity.”

While that program has been successful and beneficial, they haven’t stopped looking for new ways to offset their energy needs. In the fall of 2010, solar panels were installed at the wastewater facility. At their highest output, the panels have produced 75 percent to 80 percent of the facility’s electricity, though on average, factoring in hours of sunlight and storms, the panels have been producing, and will likely continue to produce, around 15 percent of the facility’s power needs on an annual basis.

by Chelsea Long hile many residents don’t know what the Boulder Wastewater Treatment Facility is, the plant is taking steps to keep the community safe and energy-efficient.

The 75th Street center, which receives and treats all commercial and industrial waste from the city of Boulder, is equipped to handle up to 25 million gallons of wastewater daily. The actual amount is closer to 15 million gallons, which is treated through physical, microbiological and chemical methods.

“What we do is definitely a necessary step in keeping the community safe,” says Chris Douville, coordinator of wastewater treatment at the facility.

The water, once treated to Environmental Protection Agency and state of Colorado standards, is discharged into Boulder Creek. At that point, it’s not safe for consumption, but it is safe for recreation and contact with those downstream of the facility.

“What we’re doing is we’re taking what would happen in natural ecosystems and compressing it in time and space,” says Douville. “It takes a lot of power to do that, primarily electricity.”

But since 1986, the treatment facility has been finding ways to offset that electrical necessity. Back then, it was methane gas. Now, it’s solar power.

he genie is out of the bottle, and she is circuitry.

As quickly as the subgenres of electronic music become tagged and assimilated and commonly negotiated — trance, drone, dubstep, ambient, et al. — Robert Henke smears the palette and bleeds each into the others. The archetypal pioneer, plowing directly into the darkness with a worn path of linear determination pointed at a destination over the horizon, doesn’t seem to fit Henke’s remarkable, if under-publicized, route through contemporary electronica. Instead, the programmer-turned-electronic music performer cuts broadly inscribed figure eights around the points of familiarity: martial and aggressive club beats supporting banks of textured and detailed grey noise when performing as his alter-ego Monolake, or gentle and

immersive tonal baths, graced by vocal samples or orphaned bits of melody, random but delicately wrought, performing as himself.

“I am probably more interested in sound as a phenomenon than in music as an abstract idea,” he explained in a 2004 interview. “Also, I am fascinated by gradually evolving structures. For me, a pulsating, repetitive beat of a club track, the music of Steve Reich, a Thomas Koener soundscape, or distant urban traffic noises are all equal sources of inspiration and delight.”

Henke was born in Munich in 1969, educated at Pottsdam, where he studied and received his degree in sound engineering (his thesis: “Modeling Nonlinear Distortions of Vinyl Records in Realtime”), and he

Henke’s appearance is one of the highlights of this year’s Communikey Festival, which is a Boulder-based interdisciplinary organization dedicated to social, cultural and ecological innovation through creative process. This year’s program features a wide range of electronic artists, several sound installations and films, including Burning Ice, the 2009 documentary chronicling a nine-day journey by artists like Robyn Hitchcock, KT Tunstall and Laurie Anderson aboard an icebreaker to the glaciers of Greenland to “to see, experience and contemplate the effects of climate change first-hand — and to begin a creative conversation with the rest of the world about one of the most important and pressing issues facing the future of humanity.”

Composer of much-praised Takács Quartet piece draws inspiration from his environment

H

is Web page has photos of him skiing in Utah, hiking at Brainard Lake in the middle of the winter, on the beach in Southern California, and wearing a hard hat at a construction site in Denver.

Oh yeah — there’s one backstage at the Aspen Music Festival, too. Did I mention that he’s a distinguished composer who teaches at the University of Colorado College of Music? Daniel Kellogg has written music for the Philadelphia Orchestra, the National Symphony, the Colorado Symphony and l’Ensemble orchestral de Paris, among others.

In addition, his works have been premiered by performers as diverse as the Ying Quartet, the President’s Own United States Marine Band, the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble and eighth blackbird — not bad for an outdoorsy Coloradan still in his 30s.

One of Kellogg’s more recent scores was written for Boulder’s Takács Quartet, which will perform his Soft Sleep Shall Contain You: A Meditation on Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden” in its upcoming concerts at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 17, and at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 18, in the Grusin Music Hall at the CU Imig Music Building.

As its full title suggests, Soft Sleep Shall Contain You is based on Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden” String Quartet, which takes its name from Schubert’s song of the same title, used in one of the quartet’s movements.

The Kellogg score will be performed along with the Schubert work on the upcoming program, which will be completed with Béla Bartók’s Quartet No. 6.

The Takács Quartet premiered the Kellogg piece in New York last October and has since played it on tour around the world. At the premiere, both the work and the performance earned a glowing tribute from New York Times critic Vivien Schweitzer. Kellogg’s “intelligently wrought and harmonically intriguing work ... echoes a famous quartet by Schubert,” she wrote. “In the original quartet the tension between the Grim Reaper and the maiden is expressed by the tussle between the violin and the cello ... Kellogg conveys that dance of death in the clash between G and F sharp, which casts a dissonant pall over the opening section. During the more robust interlude that follows, a simmering tension contrasts with exuberant outbursts.

Schubert’s themes are woven through the work, which concludes with a beautiful chorale.”

Of the Takács performance, Schweitzer noted “the sensitivity and commitment [of ] the Takács players,” adding that “their complex and intense interpretation illuminated every nuance” of the Schubert.

The idea of commissioning a piece based on the Schubert quartet was the brainchild of Edward Dusinberre, Takács’ first violinist.

“The idea of contemporary music commenting, reflecting, on our mainstream repertoire means I think that people listen to both with open minds,”

Dusinberre says.

Kellogg was likewise fascinated by the suggestion.

“I was drawn ... to the idea of conversing with older music in a modern aesthetic,” he says. And as he notes, he has joined a long “tradition of creating new music from old,” dating back at least to the Renaissance and continuing up to the present day.

The result, Dusinberre thinks, fits the players of the Takács Quartet particularly well.

“We know Dan well and have worked together before,” he says. “He knows the sound of our group and the individual personalities; we felt he wrote specifically for us.”

Indeed, Kellogg says that’s exactly what he did.

“In this case, I wanted to take advantage of the beautiful and lyrical playing that they bring to the table, but also the passion they bring to it — knowing that they could have the most extreme expressions, that they could pull that off and have the drama so successful in their playing,” he says.

There’s one more thing Kellogg wants audiences to know when they hear his piece.

“Writing music can often be a difficult challenge,” he says, “but writing this piece was one of the greatest joys I’ve had as a composer, starting with the beautiful Schubert chorale, and then writing for this group. The piece seemed to write itself, which hardly ever happens to me.”

Capturing the spirit, if not the notes

Dark Star Orchestra aims to channel the Grateful Dead, not replicate them

A

s far as seminal groups of the ’60s and ’70s go, the Grateful Dead were a little bit different.

They were less a band than a way of life — a living, breathing mass of humanity with smiles on their faces and flowers behind their ears, travelling around the country mixing hippie mysticism with killer jams. Zeppelin fans can recapture the feeling of Plant and Page with a six-pack of Budweiser and an FM radio tuned to a classic rock station, the Beatles will forever live on in their various classic albums, and as long as there is a stoned teenager trying to sync up Dark Side of the Moon with the Wizard of Oz, the spirit of Pink Floyd will be alive and well. But fans of the Dead want a little more help to keep the band’s spirit alive. They need the Dark Star Orchestra.

The Dead have never been radio mainstays, and while American Beauty and Workingman’s Dead are rightly regarded as classic works of Americana, their studio output barely scratches the surface of the Dead’s impact during their three decades as a touring band. Unlike the Beatles, where all someone needs to truly “get” the group is a pair of headphones and a copy of Sgt. Pepper’s, the Grateful Dead need to be seen live to be truly appreciated. And with apologies to the recently formed Bob Weir/Phil Lesh group Furthur, the spot-on tribute band Dark Star Orchestra offers fans the best chance to catch what the Dead were like at the height of their powers.

“The thing with the Dead was, you never really knew when the magic was going to happen,” says Dark Star guitarist/Jerry Garcia stand-in Jeff Mattson.

“You can go four nights, and then on the fifth night, everything just clicks between the audience and the band, where everything is magical and everyone just

feels it. We’ve had a couple of those nights with Dark Star, where everything is just perfect.”

In fact, calling the group a tribute band at all doesn’t really do them justice. The band recreates classic Grateful Dead shows with a painstaking amount of detail, ensuring that the equipment and general sound of the night is true to the era they are covering. But the fluid nature of the Dead’s music and Dark Star’s willingness to embrace that fluidity means that no two Dark Star songs will ever sound the same, and no Dark Star song will ever sound exactly like the way the Grateful Dead played it.

In playing what Mattson refers to as “real music in real time,” he feels that Dark Star is more in line with the spirit of the Dead than if they were playing note-fornote rehashes of classic Dead shows.

“It wouldn’t be true to the Dead if we were to learn one version of ‘Rambling Rose’ and learn it note-for-note, and play the same version every time we perform that song,” explains Mattson. “We have a vocabulary to work with, but at the end of the day we

are playing it as it happens.”

If tribute bands often give off the appearance that they are play-acting, it is because in a sense, most of them are. A Guns ‘N Roses tribute band may play all the notes of “Paradise City” exactly as they sound on Appetite for Destruction, but it really doesn’t feel like a GNR show unless you’re scared the guy playing Axl Rose might come off of the stage and kick you in the face. But the spontaneity that comes with covering the Dead and the idea that any night could offer something special, something that no one has ever heard before and no one will ever hear again, gives Dark Star shows a similar vibe to the original Grateful Dead. Dark Star Orchestra feels more like a real band that happens to be playing Dead songs than a campy tribute band or a group resorting to cover songs because their originals couldn’t hack it.

“Because of all the improvisation goes along with Dead songs, we really get to express ourselves personally, because no one can really predict where the jam is going to go on any given night,” Mattson says.

That unpredictability has even led to Dark Star inheriting some of the touring culture that was so vital to the original Dead experience, with fans often joining the band for extended periods on the road. While nothing can truly recreate the magic of the original Dead, Mattson believes his band’s meticulous attention to detail is what has resonated so strongly with Deadheads young and old.

“There are a million different details that go into every show that make everything faithful to the style they were playing that particular day, week and year,” Mattson says. “We’re just trying to do our best to capture the spirit of the Dead in every show.”

A reimagined circus makes us all kids again

ould that I were a talented enough writer to pen this review of Les 7 doigts de la main’s Traces without referencing Cirque du Soleil. I have little doubt that most, if not all, reviews of Traces — or any of Les 7 doigts de la main’s other shows — call out Cirque, and color me contrary, but I’d love to be the exception to the rule. Unfortunately, as I am not some Shelley-ian creation with the sagacity of Plato, the wit of Shakespeare and the rhythmic sense of Chaucer, that ain’t gonna happen.

Les 7 doigts de la main translates as “The seven fingers of the hand” and is a play on an old French idiom about disparate parts coming together to work toward a common goal. Either that, or it’s really the punch line to a filthy French joke on par with The I have been lucky enough to have seen 10 different Aristocrats. Traces features seven artists — all born in the 1980s if memory serves — performing individually and in any number of grouped permutations. They tumble, dance, embrace, shove, scamper, climb, flip, slide, roll and glide all with boundless enthusiasm and energy. The opening number, set to VAST’s “Touched,” introduces the artists and establishes the show’s loose, Earthy vibe. Soon after, a wordless bit featuring one of the men and the only woman in the troupe depicts the arc of a relationship with more emotional vitality and veracity than I’ve seen in any medium in ages.

Skateboard trickery arrives set to 1930s-era music. All seven daredevils crisscross the stage as they leap through rings seemingly too high and too small to allow passage. A La-Z-Boy (or perhaps a less iconically branded easy chair) becomes a dance partner as the artist clowns with it around the stage, sitting on its every possible surface. My only moment of disappointment came after we were told that one of the artists would now sing a “French song,” and it turned out not to be “Frère Jacques.” (Come on, you have to admit that would have been pretty funny.)

If you enjoy precision acrobatics, free-flowing, dance-inspired movement and genuine commitment from a set of performers, Traces is calling your name.

If you’ve ever wondered what a Cirque show might be like if scaled down and stripped of its over-the-top production design, buy a ticket today. Even if you haven’t set foot in a theater or under a big top since you were 5 years old, I can all but guarantee that you’ll walk out of the Denver Center after a showing of Traces with the goofiest of grins on your face. Trust me, this is one not to miss.

eruvian classical guitarist Alfredo Muro began teaching himself to play at the age of 10. Three years later he won a national prize.

Muro’s career as a musician has not stopped rising since.

Over the years he has performed throughout Latin America, the United States and Europe. He was the featured artist at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. in 2007 as well as The Smithsonian Museum representing Peru at The IberoAmerican Guitar Festival he per-

Americans, we love stories about surviving against the odds and the elements.

Flip through the channels of cable television on any given night, and you’ll probably find a survival-themed reality TV show. I Shouldn’t Be Alive features dramatizations of people who survived injuries or other mishaps in the wilderness.

Survivorman follows the travels of a lone outdoorsman living off the land. In Man vs. Wild, Bear Grylls conducts a frontal

assault on nature, eating insects and climbing down waterfalls with a camera crew in tow.

The trend is even at the movies. The film 127 Hours, about self-amputating Colorado climber Aron Ralston, was nominated for several Academy Awards.

there are still nuggets of useful information in these shows. He knows a little something about the subject. He has been teaching survival classes for more than 36 years and once survived 22 days stranded by snow in the Cascade Mountains.

“You never know what can happen out there. The key is to be observant.

Always know that danger is all around,” Wiggins said.

With warmer weather on the horizon, outdoors enthusiasts will soon begin venturing deeper into the wilderness. Even a short afternoon hike, rafting trip or ATV jaunt can turn into a survival situation.

Read these stories that serve as a reminder that, with the proper mindset, training and equipment, you can go into the wild prepared for any eventuality.

Don’t need a weatherman In 2007, hiker Warren Edick II learned the hard way about the biggest cause of wilderness mishaps in Colorado: a sudden change in our unpredictable weather.

A spring backpack trip on Pikes Peak turned into a search-and-rescue mission when three feet of snowfall collapsed his tent and waist-deep snow prevented him from walking out.

He didn’t bring snowshoes. The forecast called for only an inch or two on the peak.

“The fun goes into the background when you’re fighting for your survival,” Edick said.

He was able to summon help with his cell phone.

It was a change in the weather that stranded Wiggins in the Cascades. It snowed heavily, then rained on the snowpack.

“We were prepared mentally and

He and his friends survived by huddling in a U.S. Forest Service cabin, living on its stores, and then horse oats and dry dog food.

The moral: When venturing into the mountains, dress for any season.

Bad luck But all the preparedness in the world can’t save you from bad luck.

Colorado Springs technical climber Craig Smith learned that the hard way in 2006 when a cliff ascent in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison turned into a life-or-death situation after he fell and broke his leg. It took 17 hours, but he and his partner pulled themselves out of the chasm.

“Several times I wanted to give up, but there was no option. I just had to get out,” he said after the ordeal.

Experts say the proper attitude — and remaining calm — is as essential as the proper gear.

Wiggins teaches the acronym “STOP”: sit, think, observe, plan.

Keep calm and ask yourself, “Do you know where you are?”

“If you don’t know where you are or how to get out, obviously you’re going to stay put,” he said. “Staying put, in most situations, is really going to be key, unless the weather clears up or you have a good idea where to get out.”

You could be moving away from rescuers and wasting precious calories if you don’t know where you’re going.

A Colorado Springs woman learned that lesson in 2005 when she lost her friends while mushroom hunting on Greenhorn Mountain southwest of Pueblo. Rose Ann Nardini-Hausman walked in the direction she thought she had left her car, but only got more lost. After a cold night along a creek, she sprained her ankle and spent two more nights in the wilderness. She wrote “SOS” in rocks, held her red sack in the air and kept calling for help. Finally, a rescue crew found her.

After her rescue, she said keeping a positive mental outlook kept her going.

“I told myself, ‘You’ve got to stay in your head. If you give in to your emotions, you’re really going to be in trouble,’” she said.

Bring the right gear In 1998, two people on a winter hike around Rampart Reservoir tried to take a shortcut to their car as dusk approached. They got lost and spent 40 hours struggling through blizzardlike conditions and waist-deep snow without food.

“I was totally underdressed,” Benjamin Shaw said. “I wasn’t too prepared at all.”

But Shaw and his hiking companion had a lighter, and campfires kept them alive until the weather cleared and they could walk to find help. They took shelter beneath a rock overhang.

Fires and shelters are two keys to survival, and Reg Francklyn, president of El Paso County Search and Rescue, said anyone venturing into the wilderness should have the ability to make both, even if your shelter is just an emergency poncho.

Other essentials he recommends are a knife or other tool, first aid equipment, extra clothes, water filter or purifier, map, compass, water and food.

But too often, he said, people have nothing more than their cell phone, which is an unreliable tool in the high country.

“There’s an over-reliance on technology,” he said. “Yes, a cell phone is wonderful, and we recommend people have them, but that shouldn’t be your only piece of equipment.”

For people planning serious backcountry endeavors, he suggests taking a class in survival techniques.

Still, the best way to survive is to avoid a survival situation. Most are the fault of people who ignore warning signs — changing weather, unfamiliar terrain — and plunge on. It’s also known as “summit fever.”

“They’re just not stopping to think of the consequences,” Francklyn said.

“In looking at all the different survival situations, you look at the ones where people survived tremendous odds and those who died doing something pretty basic and simple they shouldn’t have died doing,” said Wiggins. “It’s the lack of preparedness and the lack of knowledge that get most people in survival situations.” (c) 2011, The Gazette (Colorado Springs).

Making room for mobile food trucks

obile food trucks are a trend that has been popping up in Austin, Portland, New York and Denver. They’ve even got them in Colorado Springs. So if they’re not allowed inside Boulder, can we really call ourselves the foodiest town in America?

“Boulder is not going to be less progressive than Colorado Springs,” says Ashlie Beckham, the face behind Walnut-a-gogo, the Walnut Café’s mobile food truck.

Currently, mobile food trucks are not permitted within the limits of the city of Boulder unless they’re operating as “caterers,” on private property, and even then that’s tricky.

Rayme Rossello, owner of Comida, the bright pink truck that serves Mexican food, has had the cops called on her while operating on private property with permission from the owner.

“We’ve been asking the city to allow us to operate, and to let us make friends instead of enemies,” Rossello says. “I can speak for myself, and a few other food truck owners, and say that I don’t want to put my Mexicanfood truck in front of a Mexican restaurant.”

Beckham agrees, saying she’d never park her breakfast food truck in front of a place like Lucille’s Creole Café or Peet’s Coffee.

“We’d never want anybody to do that at one of the Walnuts,” she says. “But there’s got to be something between no food trucks allowed anywhere in the city of Boulder and me driving down the middle of Pearl Street and parking sideways.”

City Council is working to change those codes, and had a meeting April 5 to discuss a new set of rules and regulations that would allow the trucks inside city limits — while still protecting the interests of brick-

and-mortar restaurants. Another meeting will be held in May to vote on the proposed codes.

Until then, you can find trucks like Comida, Walnut-a-gogo, and A.J. Julian’s Top of the Hill Grill West scattered around office parks around 55th Street and in east Boulder at lunch time, or at other locations that most announce on their Twitter and Facebook pages.

“Especially with summertime, and having worked in Boulder, I know I’ve got 30 minutes to go get food at lunch,” says Julian, owner of a newer mobile food vending service. “It’s not feasible sometimes unless you want to have McDonald’s or Wendy’s every day. I want to be able to reach the workers that are not able to get a fresh, healthy lunch on a regular basis without having to spend their whole lunch hour in a baking hot car.”

Julian’s Top of the Hill Grill West sells barbeque food, but is not the meat-only operation you’re used to.

He’s got beef brisket, pulled pork and other traditional barbeque favorites, but also sells a tempeh wrap, veggie burgers and a greensbased salad wrap with homemade vinaigrette. His style, like the other food trucks popping up in Boulder, allows for a blend of great food with the variety and creativity needed to survive in a town that’s lauded for its diverse and plentiful restaurant selection.

“Nobody is successful in Boulder doing it fast or cheap or uncreative,” Beckham says. “That’s never going to work in this town.”

Beckham’s truck, affectionately named “Dinah,” serves food based off the Walnut menu, but with twists that allow for patrons to eat without a fork. Their traditional, beloved Eggs Marcos, a scrambled egg dish with bacon and cream cheese, is transformed into a quesadilla for customers at the Walnut-a-gogo.

The Walnut’s name and credibility has played into the success of Walnut-a-gogo, which just started in December.

“People know that the Walnut’s on the up-and-up.

n preparation for my staycation (I mean, who doesn’t just love staying home for four days instead of flying off to Cabo?), I am preparing to turn my place into a B&B, and I am not talking Bénédictine here, although surely alcohol will be on hand. You can’t have a vacay or staycay without indulging a little.

So I am making the quintessential B&B treat: Blueberry StreuselTopped Muffins. Ha! Take that, beautiful ocean, wind blowing through my hair, sand between my toes and tequila in both hands. I have blueberry muffins in a dusty house with an ocean breeze candle and a PBR. I think blueberries are about as close to a perfect food as we can get.

Delicious, and good for you, too. Of course, I’m combining them with butter, flour and sugar, but nonetheless, they are still perfect little bursts of sunshine in your mouth.

So many of us think we have the perfect muffin recipe, and then the rest of us find they sink in the middle, are dry and crumbly, or just taste plain boring. This recipe won’t disappoint anyone — the buttermilk adds a richness you can’t beat, and adding a streusel topping to the already delicious little cake will send your staycation over the top. You will never want to leave the house to travel again. Who needs Italy when you have blueberry streusel-topped muffins?

These are regular-sized muffins, just so you know. Not the soccer ball-size muffins you can buy from many a coffee shop. Not that there is anything wrong with food bigger than your head, but I’m making them a little less offensive in the calorie department, so you might not feel as bad indulging in one or two with coffee, tea, mimosa, tequila, margarita, pina colada.

What? Muffins go swimmingly with anything when you have to stay home instead of lounging poolside.

Save a few blueberries and pop them in some champagne to pair alongside the muffins. That my friends, is a berry good idea.

Now, follow the directions, put some love into it, and invite me over when it’s done.

Blueberry StreuselTopped Muffins 1 1/2 cups flour 1 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. baking soda 1/4 tsp. salt 1/2 cup unsalted butter (room temp) 1 cup brown sugar 2 eggs 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla 3/4 cup buttermilk 1 cup fresh blueberries Streusel topping 1/4 cup flour 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1 tsp. cinnamon 3 tbsp. butter (cold and chopped up)

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Line a 12-count muffin tin with liners or grease muffin tin (this recipe ends up making about 15 muffins).

In small bowl, combine 1/4 cup flour, 1/2 cup sugar and cinnamon.

Cut in butter with a fork or two knives until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Set aside.

In another small bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Set aside.

In large bowl, cream together butter and sugar. Add eggs and vanilla and mix well. Stir in buttermilk until batter is smooth.

Add flour mixture to wet mixture. Stir until just incorporated.

Fold in blueberries.

Fill each muffin holder with batter until almost full. Top each muffin with streusel mix. Bake for 20-25 minutes, until tops are golden brown. Take out and let cool 10 minutes in pan. Remove. Enjoy!

“It’s a hip and urban development.

Sticking us in office parks is not the way that food trucks are supposed to go,” Rossello says. “We won’t stop going to those places, we love them, but in being able to go downtown and get a whole new crowd of people — that makes it fun and easy and exciting.”

Whether she’s downtown or somewhere outside city limits, there’s no mistaking Tina’s bright pink paint job.

“It stands out, which is good and bad! When you’re downtown making people mad, it’s bad, but if people are looking for you, it’s great,” Rossello says, laughing. “I chose pink because in Mexico that’s the color of bougainvillea, which is super representative of what Mexico is to me. And it’s feminine, which is representative of me.”

Other food trucks and mobile vending services are getting their wheels on the ground, too. The Tasterie Truck is currently testing recipes for its cupcakes, cookies and other desserts, and should be out in Boulder by late April or May. There’s also Seb’s Wood-Fired Cuisine, a portable wood-fired oven that can deliver pizza literally out of the oven.

Beckham agrees.

“There’s a reason people love the guy who sells gyros at two in the morning,” she says. “We just think they’d like eggs, too.”

The worst part is that the film looks beautiful, with gorgeous exterior shots, terrific visual effects and a sequence of wellstaged interior shots that make it clear the production team (led by director David Gordon Green) was aiming at a modern, updated The Princess Bride. Problem is, writer Danny McBride couldn’t resist having the characters talk like wanna-be toughs who have just learned the latest obscenities, resulting in a film that was more profanity-laced than an Eddie Murphy stand-up routine.

‘Arthur’ a tipsy remake

rom one perspective, the well-lubricated yet stiff-jointed 1981 comedy Arthur, the one about the millionaire Manhattan drunkard played by Dudley Moore, was ripe for a remake. It scored a huge popular success early in the Reagan era, when unexamined wealth was king.

And because the movie, which harkens back to Depression-era wish-fulfillment fantasies, holds up only fitfully well a generation later, mostly in the scenes between Moore and John Gielgud (who won an Oscar as Arthur’s manservant), a remake has a fighting chance of bettering its source material.

The new Arthur, which is blobby and a bit of a mess but offers a fair number of laughs, will live or die at the box office on Russell Brand’s brand of louche comic authority and on how audiences take to it in this retro-rich-drunk context.

In the original, Moore’s alcoholic playboy fell in love with a waitress/actress/shoplifter played by Liza Minnelli. As retooled for our more sober era by screenwriter Peter Baynham, Arthur falls for a sweet, unlicensed Manhattan tour guide, played by Greta Gerwig. The title character is once again engaged to marry a more socially and financially expedient selection of human, here played as a brittle harridan by Jennifer Garner. Hobson, the “help,” has switched genders, going from Gielgud in the first version to Helen Mirren in the remake.

Are the results funny? In the margins, yes. Brand, so choice as the other man in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, is best in small doses and sloshed asides.

tower since a young child — a la Rapunzel — by the evil wizard Leezar ( Justin Theroux), and he returns on their wedding day to kidnap Belladonna and return her to his evil lair.

Fabious now has a new quest, to rescue his fair Belladonna from the clutches of the evil Leezar, and accompanying him — on his first quest, and under duress — is Thadeous and his faithful servant Courtney (Rasmus Hardicker). Cue a non-stop stream of sexual and scatological jokes that almost always fall flat and scenes that were often embarrassing to watch (the Great Wize Wizard, the selection of the Minotaur’s trophy), all with weirdly impressive production values.

Therein lies the tragedy of Your Highness.

With a more mature writer and some adult supervision on the dialogue and scenes, there really was the basis of a beautifully produced chivalric comedy. But Your Highness is not that film, and unless your sense of humor is stuck in sixth grade, this is not a film for you to see. Ever.

Gerwig, seen lately in Greenberg and quite wonderful in her absence of guile, predictable rhythms and seeming calculation, has a way of forcing her co-stars to cut to the heart of things and keep it honest. This is handy, considering the uneven material.

The writing in their introductory scenes, followed by an extravagant first date in Grand Central Station, gets awfully sticky.

Here’s where the new Arthur runs into problems sidestepped (at least according to the gross receipts) by the ’81 edition. It would be nearly unthinkable, and at the very least a dubious challenge, for a commercial romantic comedy to embrace a career alcoholic’s base-

line adorability in the early 21st century. Thus, director Jason Winer’s film, taken from Baynham’s script, makes a considerable deal about Arthur heading into Alcoholics Anonymous.

(In Get Him to the Greek, Brand played a rougher sort of libertine dealing with similar “issues,” to use a word Mirren’s character uses.) This takes the material a few steps away from the realm of retroscrewball romance and into a more seriocomic realm. In theory, I’m for it; the first Arthur came at the very tail end of what might be called “the late Foster Brooks era,” when drunks were basically amusing rather than a societal headache. But it makes the comedy tricky. (Also, it’s weird to see aggressive product placement for Maker’s Mark in a story that ends up in AA.) The real drawback with Winer’s film — which is nonetheless more amusing than the trailers suggest — is visual. The movie favors tight close-ups and telephoto lenses; we’re always a little too close for comfort. The movie boasts all sorts of nice faces, to be sure. But when actors try to get a little back-and-forth going, and maximize whatever banter they’re given, chop-chop close-ups and reaction shots become wearisome. Physical comedy is not this Arthur’s strong suit.

It works best, to the degree it works, when Brand, Gerwig and Mirren are allowed breathing room.

The film is a black comedy and centers around a man who finds himself caught up in various moral dilemmas. At nine points during the film the action stops and a moderator appears on stage to ask the audience to choose between two scenes. Following an audience vote, the chosen scene is played. Using a specially constructed voting system, audience members could change the trajectory of the film at key moments by pressing red or green buttons. The screenplay was written such that the two plot-lines converged at each decision point, meaning that there were only ever two possible scenes. (This is a tentative booking subject to cancellation.)
