ids camps boast a long list of reasons for why they’re a boost to your children. They’re a chance to make new friends and build bonds with their friends without a screen as intermediary. They provide an opportunity to dig deeply into a niche interest, whether it’s chess or archaeology or soccer. They can open your child’s eyes to aspects of the world they might not get to see or experience, like the wonder of zooming in on the tiny lives of insects or the grandeur of exploring forests, rivers and mountains. Overnight camps can be a first step toward the independence your children will need as they

he sturdy table is covered in colorful by Vanessa Schatz art supplies. A small group of 5-yearold girls and boys gently dip their brushes in vivid reds, yellows and blues. Deep in focus, everyone is painting the surfaces of their wooden birdhouses. The spacious room is quiet. Jack Johnson tunes fill the background. Anna, one of the workshop participants, delicately adds green glitter around the edges of her birdhouse. A big smile appears as she shares her piece of art with her parents, who are relaxing in the entrance area while sipping tea. This is a common scene at Tinker Art Studio, one of Boulder’s spots for children’s art classes and camps. “Art provides a vehicle for children to be expressive, anywhere from preverbal to later developmental stages,” says Christie Slater, a certified art teacher and founder and director of Tinker. The popular art studio will offer themed camp options this summer, including “Drop the Beat: Drumming & Art Camp,” “Heads, Hands & Heart: Yoga & Art Camp” and “Into the Garden,” a camp that introduces children age 3-5 to the fine art of creative landscaping. “Art also enables us to learn about other cultures Boulder Weekly
produce a movie by the end of camp week,” he says. Dawson will also introduce a circus camp this year. Interested 5-to-10-year-old students can explore stilt-walking, juggling, balancing, acrobatic skills, tumbling and clowning. This camp will be directed by Laura Presley-Reynolds, a graduate of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Clown College. Engaging in creative activities does not only enable young people to tap into their individual imagination, it also unlocks visible learning. According to a recent study conducted by the Center for Arts Education Research at Columbia University, children organize different kinds of meaning, insight and understanding while learning through the arts. Children can exercise these competencies across different subject domains, like science, math and linguistics. “Art prioritizes self-exploration over competitive learning,” says Slater. Summer camps in the Boulder area offer a multitude of options for that kind of learning in camps that focus on visual arts, theater, drama, film, creative writing, storytelling, woodwork, painting and ceramics.

and diversity,” says Slater, who is also a licensed arts integration specialist. “It levels the playing field. Everyone can come to the table.” The positive impact of learning through the arts has been explored by Shirley Brice Heath, a professor of English and dramatic literature at Stanford University. “Effective youth arts organizations build strong pro-civic and pro-social values in young people, enhancing opportunities for youth to reshape the climate of their neighborhoods,” Heath says. “Art also allows kids to think outside the box and to come up with new ideas. They need avenues to express themselves. This is easily done through art,” says Mike Jacobsma, Alexander Dawson Summer School summer camps and programs director. The Dawson Summer School program added a “Young Filmmaker Academy” for 8- to 12-year-old students to its 2014 curriculum. “Most kids are curious and excited about technology, this is why we included filmmaking as an option. Immersive education encourages personal growth by Cayte Bosler

hether it’s learning pawn structure in a game of chess, executing an arm bar against an opponent on the mat or learning how to hunt for fossils with scientific tools, hands-on education camps provide kids with experiences as active participants in niche fields. And there are secondary benefits to skill-based, immersive education, like a sense of personal responsibility that translates to children’s daily lives. Corrie Colvin Williams, program director of CU Science Discovery, says she thinks it starts with making a curriculum relatable. “Through our program, we hope that campers learn to see that science really is all around them, in their day-to-day life, helping them realize that they are already participating in the process of science inquiry as they explore the world around them,” Williams says. From there, kids are positively challenged to explore their understanding of how a scientist operates and how various science fields contribute to a collective understanding of the world. Paul Szeligowski, program director of Boulder County Chess School, says he believes translating abstract knowledge to personal achievement is important for intellectual growth. “Studies have Cottonwood Gulch shown that there is a high correlation between chess and creativity, problem solving, concentration, memory and many other life skills,” he says. “It is something that kids can learn at a young age and enjoy throughout their lives.” A research study from the University of Sydney in Australia assessed whether primary thinking tools developed in chess games help aid in secondary problem-solving tasks in the classroom. It concluded that “the case is exceptionally strong for using chess to develop our children’s minds and help them cope with the growing complexities and demands of a globalizing world.” “It isn’t just abstract knowledge; they see the effects of it applied in their games,” Szeligowski says. “In the camp, they get to use that knowledge immediately, so there is a cycle of positive reinforcement as they learn more and more.” James Strater-Smith, long-term instructor of martial arts at Easton Academy, agrees that camps need to offer kids more than a set of isolated skills if they’re going to prepare youth for an inevitable increase in responsibility. “It’s not just about the punches and kicks. It’s about character development and leadership,” Strater-Smith says. “We like to tell parents that hopefully their child will never be in a situation where they will need to utilize the techniques we are teaching them, but the life lessons that come with training can be applied in their every day — lessons like honesty, self discipline and respect.” Strater-Smith speaks from experience. He grew up training jiu jitsu and says it gave him a sense of empowerment that he may not have gotten elsewhere. The most enjoyable part of teaching the camps, he says, is watching shy kids become more assertive about their needs. Boulder Weekly

Mt. Evans Hospice offers summer weekend camps for grieving children. Registration is under way for both the June 27-29 and July 25-27 sessions of Mt. Evans Hospice’s annual Camp Comfort, located in the Rocky Mountains just west of Denver. This unique bereavement camp is a way for children ages 6 to 12 to explore their feelings of grief and share memories of their loved ones. During this extraordinary weekend, children learn ways to cope with their grief through workshops led by licensed social workers and trained bereavement professionals. A volunteer “buddy” system (with no more than two children to one adult) ensures that children receive plenty of personal, one-on-one attention. And while children are encouraged to share memories and express their grief, Camp Comfort offers fun, too. The daily itinerary includes plenty of opportunities for recreation, including swimming, horseback riding, arts and crafts, fishing and hiking. The total cost to attend Camp Comfort, including all workshops, recreation, meals, snacks and overnight accommodations, is $150. Scholarships are available based on financial need. A daily dose of ‘vitamin G’
Cheley Colorado Camps
The great outdoors inspire active, healthy and empowered citizenship from an early age by Vanessa Schatz
H
ave you taken your “vitamin G” lately? Frances Kuo, researcher for the National Recreation and Park Association, found in a 2010 study that parks and other green environments are essential components of a healthy human habitat. Children and young adults especially benefit from being active in nature. Kuo argues that a daily dose of “vitamin G,” or “vitamin green,” is vital to promote a healthier and resilient populace. In Boulder’s more than 43,000 acres of open space city and parklands, opportunities for outdoor recreation, adventures and “vitamin G” intake are endless. The upcoming summer camp season offers a variety of programs that are dedicated to getting children and young adults outside, hiking, YMCA Camp Shady Brook rock climbing, mountain biking, kayaking, camping or learning skills for survival or backcountry cooking. Jessica Vogt, program director at Singletrack Mountain Bike Adventures (SMBA), the longest-running, independent, junior mountain bike program in Colorado, states that exposing children to the outdoors, away from communication channels like social media and smart phones, gives them a chance to individually explore themselves. “It allows them to be active, have fun and enjoy life,” Vogt says. “Children also learn basic trail advocacy and how important taking care of the world that surrounds us is.” SMBA’s summer camps will offer adventure trips, including destinations like Crested Butte, Buffalo Creek and Winter Park in Colorado and Moab in Utah. A 2005 study conducted by the American Institutes for Research indicates that outdoor activities promote conservation awareness and basic environmental behaviors like recycling. The study also revealed that at-risk students were able to discover leadership and social-emotional skills in nature that support learning across the curriculum. These skills can increase motivation to learn, improve classroom behavior and build stronger connections among students and teachers. “It is all about realizing who you are, what you like and dislike,” says Sarah Pekala, Avid4 Adventure school program director, who also stresses the importance of outdoor education for sharpening children’s interpersonal and relationship skills while working with peers and adult mentors. “When we teach children what it takes to be outside, everything is done in groups. We work together to get things done and to keep each other safe,” explains Pekala. This kind of group mentality also increases self-awareness. Their popular Discovery Camp, intended for pre-kindergarten children (ages 3-5), offers a small-scale version of climbing, paddling, biking and hiking activities that stimulate a wide range of movement skills to encourage early childhood brain and body development that is conscious of physical and spatial relationships. Exposure to nature and building new skills can boost self confidence, she adds. “It’s amazing to watch a child overcome something they are initially scared of — while learning life lessons,” Pekala says. 22 March 6, 2014

Music camps foster teamwork in youth by Andrea Neville
W
hat if you could send your child to a music camp and have them come back with a more helpful attitude? Countless studies have been done on the benefits of musical teachings for children, but one of the most important advantages is the improvement in teamwork skills. When children are a part of a band, they try harder to succeed so they don’t let the group down. Plus, every child gets to feel included. Luckily, Boulder County offers amazing music camps for local youngsters. At Rocky Ridge Music Center, students and instructors all live together in a community. Students have to work together to keep the camp clean and organized. “Everybody volunteers at the camp, Rocky Ridge Music Center even the instructors,” says Karen Dusek, operations manager for Rocky Ridge. Recently, Dusek says, a former student’s father came up and praised the camp for helping his daughter become more responsible and helpful. At the Boulder School of Rock Performance Camp, students work together to create a song, band logo and t-shirt in a variety of different camp themes, from general “boot camps” to specialized camps, such as Beatles Boot Camp. “We view every camp as an opportunity for students to develop teamwork and cooperation skills,” says Chris Shepherd, head music director for the Boulder School of Rock. “The whole week is designed for everyone to work together. It is truly inspiring to see how much is achieved in one week’s time.” Mojo’s Music Rock n’ Roll Camp allows students to perform at real music festivals such as the Rhythm on the River festival. They receive specialized instruction, learning their part of the song privately, then the band comes together as a team. Students learn the history of various music genres and then perform songs from different eras. This year’s theme at Mojo’s is “Rock of Ages.” “The kids have to use teamwork and consideration when choosing the songs they want to play,” says Jessica Rogalski, co-owner of Mojo’s Music Rock n’ Roll Camp. “They also need to work together to write a song, choose a band name and decide the song list for the show.” While most camps end with a performance, the “Rock Camp” at Guitars Etc. finale is a concert performed with all the works: fog machines, professional lighting and spotlights. “Before their rock concert they have a photo shoot, and an autograph signing session after the concert,” says Todd Skaw, owner of Guitars Etc. Teamwork is a big part of the camp experience. Students work together to create new songs and perform music as a band. The group dynamic offered by these camps allows kids to see that teamwork is essential for everyone’s success. “They’re not playing as individuals anymore, they are playing as a band,” Skaw says. “They have to work together to get music as the final product.”

www.coloradoshakes.org/education/ summer-camps Camp Shakespeare is a 16-year-old education program run by the Colorado Shakespeare Festival. Each summer, kids ages 10-18 come to CU-Boulder’s campus to study Shakespeare with Colorado Shakespeare Festival professionals. Working in small groups, these students learn about Shakespeare by rehearsing, staging and performing a shortened play on the Mary Rippon Outdoor Theatre. Camp Shakespeare is a fabulous way for kids and teens to explore theater and Shakespeare in a creative and supportive environment. In addition to acting training, students are coached by a voice, speech and text expert on enunciation, diction and clarity, which will aid them on and off stage. Campers also work with a stage combat professional to learn the safe way to fight onstage. Tuition includes one ticket to attend a CSF production. Due to high demand and a lengthy waiting list, Camp Shakespeare is expanding. CSF will offer two sessions of Camp Shakespeare in the summer of 2014. Campers may register for Session One (June 2-30), Session Two (July 21-August 8) or both.

arents are well schooled on the hazards of skills loss during the summer months — kids are shipped home with reminders that reading and math skills can deteriorate without some attention over the summer. But what if, on top of all that, you’re learning math and reading in your second language? Five years ago, Boulder Valley School District teamed up with the YMCA of Boulder Valley to address the need for students for whom English is a second language and who may be struggling and in need of summer school, to have a place where they can spend the afternoon after morning summer school classes end at 11:30 a.m. — a tough hour for kids to be released if their parents are working — and a place where they can bring the English language skills they’ve been practicing in the classroom into more social settings. They created the Cultural Awareness Through Creative Horizons Camp, or CATCH Camp, with 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant funding from the by Elizabeth Miller state of Colorado. A camper’s day runs “Our role as counselors is to be English language role from 8:30 a.m. until 4:40 p.m., the first three hours of models. … Just conducting the whole camp day in English which is summer school from Monday to Thursday. All kids attend this program for free, getting bus rides programs director for the YMCA of Boulder Valley. “We know their families really do need this help over the sumto and from the schools, free lunches and snacks and mer. … If they were spending it out at home, they’re not field trips to places they might otherwise not get to visit. really going to be exposed to English, and that’s where “Some of the kids have never been in a public some of the teachers see that achievement gap over the swimming pool. biliterate because … they’re applying the English language in these activities with other kids who are English-language speakers.” The camp enrolls between 40 and 60 ESL kids from Columbine and University Hill elementary schools, respectively, and 30 to 40 from the middle school in the program — about 100 kids total in the summer. “It’s definitely true. Kids really love coming, and it shows that their attendance is great throughout summer school and camp, which I think is an indicator — if you can get kids to do anything over the summer it’s always a good sign,” says Leah Taylor, 21st Century Grant program director for Casey Middle School. Of elementary students who attend more than 30 days of the program, both summer school and CATCH Camp, almost 43 percent improve on TCAP scores from non-proficient to proficient or above in reading — and 71 percent of them have teachers who report improvements in student behavior. Teachers of those students report that almost 70 percent of them see an improvement in homework completion and class participation, according to Taylor. The 21st Century Grants serve 600 to 700 kids on a weekly basis throughout the three locations, she says, meeting them with a full wrap-around program that includes before- and after-school programs, academic and enrichment programs and parent programming. “Kids who participate in that are often ones who stay through summer as well, and what we see is they definitely report higher scores on our school climate surveys,” Taylor says. “They feel more engaged, more connected at school. Their parents report very similarly that they feel like they have structure and support for their student and feel welcome in the school building.” At the end of this year, the program — which has some students who have attended all five years, and counselors who have also faithfully returned every summer — will see the end of its 21st Century Grant funding. Cabrera says they’re working to develop a permanent program modeled on the CATCH Camp that would maintain the cooperative relationship they currently have with the YMCA. Without this program, Barnes says, “Summer school isn’t going to be as successful for these kids, which they need for that retention. … That group of kids, I think, would really struggle.” March 6, 2014 33

f course a kids camp should be fun, but the special needs programs provided by Adam’s Camp, Colorado Lions Camp and Colorado Center for the Blind go one step further by expanding campers’ perceptions of what is possible. The confidence obtained through new camp activities — from rock climbing to archery — seeps into their daily lives, camp staff members say, and can provide the kids with a whole new outlook. The Colorado Center for the Blind exposes elementary-age kids to swimming, horseback riding and hiking, while older kids also rock climb, whitewater raft, canoe and learn self-defense. Adam’s Adventure Camp, which caters to kids with mild to moderate developmental disabilities, allows their campers to let loose by participating in zip lining. The Colorado Lions Camp, which welcomes both blind and developmentally disabled kids, offers mountain biking and fishing on their own 40 acres of Pike National Forest. The activities provided by these camps would pique the interest of any kid, but sometimes the kids attending these camps first need to break down some social and mental barriers before they feel comAdam’s Camp fortable enough to try new activities. At 2:48 PM Adam’s Adventure Camp, campers share family-style cabins with their peers, counselors and volunteers. “They get to meet all kinds of new friends, some with similar disabilities, and some without, and they get to do a lot of peer modeling,” says Jenny Chase, adventure camp director for Adam’s Camp. “We have volunteers of their age with the campers, so they get to learn a lot from them.” Dan Berke, public relations and college prep coordinator for Colorado Center for the Blind, says the camp works on breaking down preconceived limitations that are established from daily social settings to open up the kids’ minds to opportunities. “In a lot of situations when blind kids are in school, they’re given alternative programs and activities,” he says. “It sends a message to them that blind people are not as capable of a risk. Our challenge is to disrupt that thinking and get them to think, ‘I can do this, I have the ability to accomplish this.’” When campers do new activities at these camps — activities they may never have thought possible — the accomplishment creates a confidence that helps them with their daily struggles, says Berke. Dan Smith, executive director of Colorado Lions Camp, says you can really see a difference when kids return for a second year of camp — they require less persuasion to do activities and even have ambition to try new activities. “I hear from parents about what they are more willing to do when they get back home,” he says. “The parents have nothing but praise for how much they have learned and grown since they started coming to the camp.” Since the camps create an encouraging atmosphere, the kids are more willing to try activities that will provide them with the self-confidence and self-esteem that will allow them to be successful in achieving personal growth. Adventure Camp is a five-day/ night sleepaway camp that is full of fun, challenge and adventure. Campers enjoy activities that expand social horizons and provide the opportunity to develop the courage to try new things while increasing independence and confidence. This program is designed for youth and young adults with mild to moderate developmental disabilities such as autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy and Down syndrome. Campers must be mobile and enjoy group activities. Campers participate in daily adventures, which may include zip-lining, archery, river rafting, alpine slide rides, swimming, wall climbing, campfires, cabin games and a camp-wide dance. Campers stay in family-style cabins with counselors, volunteers and peers. Our staffing of two experienced counselors and four teen volunteers per team of 10 campers allows for individualized relationships with each camper.
