any of us can remember those first days away from home at camp — maybe we were a little scared along with being excited, but by the end of our camp adventure, we were surrounded by new friends and counting down the days until we could do it again. Some of those friendships continue to this day, and the same can be said for many of the lessons and skills learned at camp. Camps provide the chance for kids to dig into something they love, from music to theatre to science, or learn to love something they’ve never experienced before. A great camp experience can teach our children to explore the natural world

around them, find their passion for artistic expression, learn a skill, find ways to cope with life’s difficulties or even deepen their spirituality. But beyond the specific skills a camp can teach, these programs can give kids that first taste of independence, a chance to be away from home and forge their own path, whether it’s for a day or a week or two. Conversely, camp provides the opportunity for young folks to learn teamwork, to accomplish goals together with peers who may share certain interests while also having radically different ideas on how to get from point A to point B. The end result of working together for kids is often an enhanced sense of pride and the knowledge that they are capable of doing amazing things through cooperation. Colorado is home to hundreds of amazing camps that cater to any child’s interests. So take some time to peruse this year’s camp listings that Boulder Weekly has compiled from around the county and across the state. Challenges children to spend three adventure-filled hours a day completing a fun, exciting mission or “Quest.” Each Quest employs a creative storyline designed to incorporate Three Dimensional Learning by combining physical activity and games with arts, crafts and special events.

Kids take their gymnastics skills to the next level through a more intense three-hour program. Kids focus on learning specific beginner, intermediate or advanced level skills while reviewing and practicing all-around gymnastic skills. ive your child some paper and crayons and watch their learning capabilities grow. Anyone who has been around a child knows that kids love making art projects. They love the glue, glitter and paint, but mostly they love the messiness of it all. The greatest thing, though, is that children are actually cultivating useful skills while working on fun projects. Research has shown a strong correlation between learning the arts and other facets of learning, both in the classroom and out. According to research from the the University of California at Los Angeles, “Students who participate in arts learning experiences often improve their achievement in other realms of learning and life.” Cheryl Lock from ArtsEdge.org says, “[A child is] sure to learn important realworld skills including critical and creative thinking, hand-eye coordination, motor skills and social skills.” Many local camps provide children with learning opportunities disguised as fun. The Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art offers printmaking, installation art, figure drawing/animation and sculpture at its Young Artists at Work camps. “Presenting art as a viable option for expression and seeing artists who are making a living doing this is something really powerful for kids,” says Nicole Dial-Kay, public programs manager for BMoCA. “There are a lot of camps in Boulder, but ours is really special because it takes place in the museum,” Dial-Kay says. “All of the educators are working exhibiting national and international artists, and they all focus on a fine art technique along with a fun theme that kids can really latch on to.” Dial-Kay says that while having fun creatively, kids are actually learning. “A lot of studies show that kids who are involved in art do better in all subjects,” Dial-Kay says. “One of the things that I like to look to when working with these programs is the idea of what completing a project teaches you. “Believing in themselves, about what they can achieve and about what creativity makes possible; there are endless benefits to that,” Dial-Kay says, “It’s a mistake to downplay arts camps as sort of a fun way to be creative because it’s so much bigger.” Boulder Weekly

Learning through creativity Art camps provide important life skills by Andrea Neville The Art Underground of Louisville provides camps for ages 5 and up that work with a variety of different mediums such as clay and photography. “[The camps] help to develop creativity and understanding of different mediums and how they can interact with them and create different things out of them,” says Lori Jones, executive director of The Art Underground. “We have great, very child-centered instructors who have been working with kids for a long time so they understand their needs, particularly in the summer,” Jones says. “We offer a wide variety of materials that are geared towards allowing the kids to have free exploration.” Jones says the goals of their camps are “to expose kids to a wide variety of mediums and to allow them to have a

good time and have a positive experience with the arts and with the other kids in the class.” There are numerous advantages of a child attending one of these camps. “The main benefit is that they learn a lot through doing that can be applied to many other aspects of life,” Jones says. “Whether it is learning what different materials can do, learning what their limits are and expanding them or developing confidence because they can create something they never expected to create.” Crackpots of Longmont offers weeklong camps including painting, glass fusing, clay and mosaics. “Our whole thing is the craziest ideas can be the greatest ideas,” says Tamar Hendricks, owner of Crackpots. “Our goal is to let kids express

themselves and have fun with art by experimenting with a variety of different mediums and techniques,” Hendricks says. What makes this camp unique is that all ages work together on the same projects. “We have a wide range of ages of kids, and our projects are designed to be easy enough for a 6 year old to have success, but it’s amazing to see how the older children can take it to their level,” Hendricks says. “Everybody learns from each other in that environment. “Beyond the basic motor skills and creativity, I think it builds confidence,” Hendricks says. “Building that confidence and feeling success with something can always be beneficial. “We like to show them that every part of life fits in with art and art fits in with every part of life.” March 5, 2015 5

Lifelong connections Faith-based camps offer more than just an outdoor experience by Kyle Eustice

t the Jewish Community Center’s (JCC) Ranch Camp — located in Colorado’s Black Forest, 50 miles southeast of Denver — Assistant Director Gina McReynolds has the opportunity to merge outdoor life with Jewish values. “Our families choose the Ranch Camp to be a part of an outstanding, supportive community that creates opportunities for independence and creativity,” McReynolds says. “Relationships are paramount and our families love that their children spend the summer with inspiring adults in a space that fosters forever friendships. All denominations of Judaism, and those outside the Jewish faith, benefit from our daily living of universal values. Our families, campers and alumni share with us that Ranch Camp is where they, or their children, have found the strongest connection to their faith.” The JCC also hosts a day camp called Camp Shai, which is held at the JCC in Denver. Many families with diverse religious backgrounds participate at Camp Shai as well. Abby Kaufman, director of Camp Shai and youth programs, sees children having a fun and enriching community experience each week. While Camp Shai’s values are rooted in Jewish history, traditions and culture, parents of varying affiliations strongly identify with their value system. They are moral values widely accepted across cultural, religious and personal differences. “Our values are woven into the fabric of our camp activities, programs and how we interact with one another,” Kaufman explains. “Campers have an opportunity to explore and strengthen their connections to their heritage and culture through appreciation for and celebration of music, food, culture, Israel and more. Through learning about our shared culture while also encouraging campers to represent their own personal cultures and traditions, our camp families experience a strong sense of belonging as their campers participate in an immersive, experiential cultural experience.” Despite the slight nuances in various religions, at the core of most is a strict sense of morality and being loving toward one another. Jessica Drogowski, director of guest services and marketing at Covenant Heights Camp, adds, “Parents send their children to Covenant Heights for a variety of reasons, but primarily because of the excellent care, programming, love and faith our staff exude. As one parent told us, ‘We choose to send [our children] to [Covenant Heights] because we believe they are well-cared for, have a wonderful time exploring their world, learning about God and making new friends.’” Whether you call your higher power God or Buddha, Jesus Christ or Allah, there are countless overnight camping options in the Rocky Mountain region. The Shambhala Sun Summer Camp in Red Feather Lake revolves around the Shambhala Buddhist teachings, which were originally proclaimed by Chögyam Trungpa. “There is a natural source of radiance and brilliance in the world, which is the innate wakefulness of human beings,” Trungpa writes in his book The Great Eastern Sun: The Wisdom of Shambhala. “This is the basis, in myth and inspiration, of the Kingdom of Shambhala, an enlightened society of fearlessness, dignity and compassion.” The Shambhala vision does not distinguish a Buddhist from a Catholic, a Protestant, a Jew, a Moslem, a Hindu. Campers, ages 10-16, feel an immediate sense of community and connection to the natural world. Through activities such as meditation sessions, hiking and other traditional camp activities like campfire songs, marshmallow roasting and talent night, Shambhala Sun Camp develops discipline, teamwork and a sense of humor. According to their website, “Living and practicing together in this way, cooking, eating, working and playing together, allows campers to discover themselves, their world and each other in a unique and genuine way.”

s a parent, have you ever been begged by your kiddo for a horse? In an effort to meet in the middle and give your son or daughter a crash course on owning, caring for and riding a horse, horseback riding summer camps are a way to go. Just 10 minutes outside of Boulder is Triple Creek Ranch, a 64-acre oasis owned and operated by Lynn McChesney. McChesney began the horseback riding camps 10 years ago after she realized there was a gap in children’s horseback riding camps, regardless of riding, skill or comfort level. “So many farms in Boulder were strictly specialized in certain riding styles,” she says. “We discovered a real hole in basic camps for kids and created a program that offers many different types of camps for kids at different ages and with different riding abilities.”

Even if they’ve never touched a horse before, kids and teens have the option to participate in the Horsemanship Camp, which takes steps to introduce participants to the horses and establish comfort and confidence. “There’s a chemistry that goes on between a horse and a person, and sometimes that happens more slowly than other times,” McChesney says. “Horses have their own way of enticing people to come to them. It happens on its own — I’m just the avenue to make it happen.” While the chemistry of connection may take some time, there is evidence to suggest that establishing attachment to an animal — whether riding, caring for or touching — releases oxytocin, which reduces stress, lowers blood pressure and decreases anxiety. According to a 2011 report published by the Horses and Humans Research Facility, the prevalence of

secure attachment and flexible caregiving toward pets is four times higher than that of a secure attachment and flexible caregiving in human relationships. This can correlate to a greater amount of oxytocin release, which can have therapeutic and positive effects, especially on individuals with behavioral problems or those who have difficulty connecting to other humans. For the more experienced rider, many horseback riding camps in Boulder offer drill team camps. Drill team is a group of horses and riders that work together to create formations, designs and routines, often set to music. These camps challenge riders to work on speed, precision, control and working as part of a team. At Triple Creek Ranch, this is the most popular camp. At every camp, the kids will not only get the opportunity to ride the horses, they will also get a crash-course in car-

ing for the animals, including grooming, feeding and, yes, mucking stalls. These responsibilities enforce the notion that animals require work and time, and that they’re dependent on their caregivers. Despite the physical efforts needed to care for the animals, McChesney has witnessed time and time again the intangible effects horses can have on youth by providing an unspoken outlet that sparks insight and reflection, even at an elementary level. “What happens with children is that horses become mirrors, reflecting thoughts and feelings,” she says. “Unlike humans, they don’t have an opinion of who you are. What you give to them they give back to you, and in doing this, you learn about yourself.You find yourself.” If you’re not quite ready to turn your garage into a horse stall, but want to give your child a taste of the West, horseback riding camps offer a variety of options.

ccording to Peter Scales, senior fellow at The Search Institute, “Camp is one of the few institutions where young people can experience and satisfy their need for physical activity, creative expression and true participation in a community environment. Most schools don’t satisfy all these needs.” Living in Colorado presents some enticing opportunities to explore the outdoors and really dig into the captivating landscape. The Altogether Outdoors Camp in Golden takes this both literally and figuratively. Assistant Director Tom Pevear believes a deep connection with nature is imperative to a positive camp experience, so they encourage kids to get their hands dirty. “Kids love outdoor camps for different reasons, and it’s about helping campers find a love for the outdoors at their level,” Pevear says. “For some, that’s a specialty camp focused on a particular outdoor activity, and for others it’s a camp focused on building relationships that just happens to be outside. It’s in our DNA to be connected to the natural world around us, and there is no better way to experience nature than with friends and people to whom we feel connected with.” Typically, children ages 7-15 can find an outdoor camp that suites not only their needs, but also their parent’s needs. JoJo Morrison, assistant to the director of Colorado Mountain Ranch in Boulder, recognizes parents are looking for their kids to have fun adventures and gain confidence along the way. l experience where they can grow and learn in ways they might not get to while they’re in school,” Morrison says. “Parents are looking for a place where their kids can feel good about themselves, be out in Boulder Weekly

nature and feel like a part of something. Being out in nature is a lot different from just going outside. It’s a chance for kids to be wild and free.” Family owned and operated since 1947, Colorado Mountain Ranch is the area’s oldest camp. It offers campers a daytime camp experience with an optional weekly overnight. From archery and horseback riding to hiking and environmental appreciation, there are endless ways to interact with the outdoors. It’s also where kids can build their character, have an opportunity to grow and challenge themselves in a safe place where they aren’t going to be judged. “We try to encourage kids to develop a relationship with nature and become a student of the earth,” Morrison says. “We have such a strong community within our staff and kids are part of that community once they come to the gate. They know they are important. You’re going to learn amazing stuff; how to

ride a horse, how to identify a plant — lots of cool things. There are so many things kids can be great at doing.” Shawn Moriarty, resident camp director of the YMCA of Boulder Valley, feels similarly. He lights up as he talks about the transformative experiences his campers can have while attending Camp Santa Maria, which is the overnight camp located 10 miles west of Bailey, Colo. While they do have day camp programs, Moriarty believes Camp Santa Maria is a unique experience and a new way for kids to build self-esteem. “Day camps are awesome and kids go home every night, but resident camps are an opportunity for kids to be away from home for the first time,” Moriarty says. “It also gives them a chance to experience community. They’re living together with other kids their age. It’s also an opportunity to try brand new things like a sling shot range or even throwing rocks. It sounds simple and almost silly, but kids don’t get to throw rocks nowadays. It’s a whole range of new experiences. The most impactful thing is to try something, not succeed and have it be OK. We see what we can do to get them successful by the end of the week.” With so many options in the Rocky Mountain region, it can be a daunting task choosing the right camp. However, if the camp directors and staff are insistent on helping a child develop self-esteem, morals, ethics, interest in nature and a healthy sense of community, you’re moving in the right direction. “Different camps are instilling different values, and parents should really spend time asking questions to make sure the camp they are considering is in line with their value system,” Pevear says. “All camps, regardless of focus or affiliation, are instilling the broadest values of respect, honesty, acceptance and integrity.” March 5, 2015 23

A home in the circus arts

t used to be seen as a place for misfits and transients, a place for the free but the freakish. Today, the circus has become a reputable art, a career and a national intrigue. Performance colleges across the country are now drawing artists, dancers and thespians who find their calling not just on the stage, but in mastering the otherworldly technique of aerial arts, twisting themselves in silken fabrics, flying on the trapeze or doing acrobatic flips high in the sky. Marcy Gallardo has been teaching circus arts since the 1990s and says the growing mainstream appreciation for the circus arts is fueling her summer camp, Imagination Circus Arts, which will be held in two sessions this summer at the Boulder Circus Center. “When I first discovered circus in the ’80s, it was the kind of thing people giggled at,” Gallardo says. “When people said, ‘What do you do?’ and I said, ‘I’m in the circus arts,’ they’d say, ‘Oh really, you can’t do anything else?’ But since that time, styles of performance art have really changed and transformed, and circus arts have reached the mainstream audience. Since 2005 it has really exploded. You can go to a circus school anywhere in the country just as easily as you can go to gymnastics school right now. People really hold it in a much higher light than they did in the ’80s. So now when people say, ‘What do you do,’ and I say, ‘I am in circus arts,’ they say, ‘Wow!’” Students ages 8 to 16 come to Gallardo’s weeklong summer camps with varying backgrounds in gymnastics or dance — many come with no background at all, but with an abundance of energy and a love of movement. Danielle Culbeaux-Burke, 10, has attended the circus camp for three years and says the “wow” factor motivates her. “I sometimes feel a little scared, but at the same time I am having so much fun that you don’t have time to get scared,” she explains. “I feel giddy, excited in particular when performing for an audience. I like to hear the crowd go ‘Whoa!’ It motivates me to do more.” Circus camp is an amazing outlet for kids who oth28 March 5, 2015

erwise have a hard time sitting still, says Catherine Hutchison, who started teaching at Imagination Circus Arts summer camp at age 14. Now 24, Hutchison still comes home every summer from college in California to teach at the summer camp. She describes her own exposure to circus arts at the age of 8 as “a dream come true, exactly what I was hungering for.” Hutchison says the summer camp is a home for those who want to build self-confidence, body-awareness, strength and creativity. By the second day of camp, students will have picked a “major” or specialty, and by week’s end they will have

mastered a collaborative performance requiring choreography, teamwork and trust. Gallardo calls Imagination Circus Arts a “family,” and says that while some students come and go, most come and stay, a testament to what she thinks is the sense of identity and belonging that many find in circus arts. “We have kids who come to summer camp one time, then they’re stuck for life,” she says. “So then they come to the curriculum [semester-long study program] and then they start teaching for me in the professional company and then we’re friends for life and, you know, one just got married.” Angela Delsanter is the summer camp coordinator at Frequent Flyers, an aerial dance theater that will offer seven weeklong summer camps starting in June. Even though Delsanter says hers is more of an aerial dance camp than a circus camp, Frequent Flyers doesn’t scoff at clowning around. “I’m in the costumer closet right now,” she says. “We let the students bring costumes and sometimes we do makeup. Oftentimes we will have certain themes for the camps, like we’ve done Amelia Earhart as a theme or astrological signs as a theme.” Frequent Flyers offers seven scholarships throughout the summer for need-based aid as well as unique or extenuating circumstances. This kind of financial inclusion is just part of the nature of aerial arts, says Gallardo, explaining one unique thing that draws some performers to circus arts is its inclusive nature and lack of competitiveness. It’s hugely athletic, she says, but new and experienced dancers and gymnasts alike are allowed a space where they have fun, and “they aren’t hurting themselves or being told they’re just not quite there because of their scores.” “Everyone succeeds,” she says. Even parents will feel a sense of success when their exhausted trapeze-flying child comes home after camp each day, so exhausted they just want to go to bed. Kids Camp Directory Boulder Weekly

Giving kids a sporting chance From sailing to archery, sports camps give kids summer fun and lifelong lessons by Melissa Schaaf Sports Sailing Camp

ummer camps can be a rite of passage for kids where they take a break from video games to learn new skills and make friends. In a state as active as Colorado, many of those camps are focused on sports and physical activity, with some offering a specific focus. A different type of kids’ summer camp will be making waves in Boulder for its second year running. Community Sailing of Colorado, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, introduced sailing camps for youth aged 5 to 17 years old just last year in Boulder County and will offer camps on the Boulder Reservoir for the second year in a row. “When we think about water and sailing in Colorado, there’s almost a background laugh in the air,” says Executive Director Brandon Kass. “It’s fun to share with folks that there’s actually sailing happening here. We live in a great state where we take advantage of our outdoors, and sailing is another great recreational outlet where we do that.” Although the sailing camp is fairly new in Boulder, Community Sailing of Colorado has been offering youth sailing camps at Cherry Creek for more than 15 years and has been a part of the Denver community for more than 20 years. The organization also offers camps and programs for individuals with disabilities. “We have a really great relationship

with the City of Boulder, and we’re excited to be a part of the community, especially as they’re looking at a new master plan of how the Boulder Reservoir is fulfilling the community,” Kass says. Kids who attend the sailing camps are broken up into different age groups where they will learn skills, terminology and teamwork with their peers. They learn what it means and feels like to be in control of their own boat (with supervision), the responsibility of that control and the leadership it requires, according to Kass. “Our goal is to empower these kids

to see what they’re capable of,” he says. “We afford them the opportunity to build confidence and become comfortable with who they are.” If your child has many different interests and you’re looking for an actionpacked camp, Rocky Mountain Day Camp in Boulder offers a variety of activities for children 4 to 14 years old. On an average day, kids will learn and practice up to six different types of sports, including archery, dance, soccer, rocketry, floor hockey and water activities. “Some kids may have not had the opportunity to experience all of the

activities we provide before they try them out at camp,” says Tyler Fravel, director of Rocky Mountain Day Camp Boulder. “They don’t know if they’re going to like certain activities or if they’ll be good at it, but that’s where we open the door for them to try new things.” Rocky Mountain Day Camp has two locations in Superior and Boulder. The Superior location has been around for eight years, and Fravel opened the Boulder location in 2011. It will mark its fourth summer in 2015. The Boulder location sees an average of 600 children over the course of five two-week camp sessions. Fravel says that not only do the kids get the chance to learn new skills and build confidence while at camp, but also build lasting relationships with other children throughout the community and outside of their academic classmates. He believes that providing kids the opportunity to attend camp of any sort develops fundamental skills, builds character and acts as an overall learning opportunity. “Camp gives kids an opportunity to grow and learn and experience something different outside of a school setting with peers of their own where they can just be themselves and shine, whether at a computer camp, science camp or sports camp,” Fravel says. “Kids gain so much by going to camp; it gives them life skills that will last.”
