Recombinetics wants to mess with the very DNA of Mother Nature’s oinkers to make them produce bigger litters to supply the pork factories of brandname marketers. It is also genetically altering milk cows to withstand hotter weather, so climate change won’t reduce the output of huge dairy corporations.

Of course, this corporate-government collusion to build Franken-animals faces a high hurdle in the marketplace, for consumers have shown again and again that they don’t want the food they

put on their family tables tampered with. The tamperers, though, have a solution to that problem: secrecy. The industry is lobbying to outlaw any requirement that milk and meat produced by genetically altered animals be labeled as such. Better to keep consumers in the dark, because... well, if given a free choice, people might reject Recombinetics in favor of natural food.

The industrializers are not out to make food better or more affordable for us, but strictly to make it more profitable for them. Rather than remaking animals and the marketplace to benefit corporations that play with our food, let’s remake the corporate system so it cooperates with nature and serves the common good.

Children aside, this rebuke needs to be loudly directed at the profiteers of industrial agriculture. They keep toying with the very nature of food, not to benefit consumers, family farmers, workers or the environment — but to fatten the profits of Silicon Valley tech giants, food monopolist and Wall Street financiers.

U.S. imperial plans regarding Venezuela

iselle Cesin’s recent column (re: ‘An insider’s view of the Venezuelan crisis, March 7) from an opposition perspective enumerated a number of reasons why many Venezuelans are dissatisfied with President Maduro’s administration. However, given the disastrous history of U.S. interventions worldwide including, for example, Iraq, Libya, Chile, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua, I question whether greater U.S. intervention would help the Venezuelan people.

used more of Venezuela’s wealth to benefit the entire population, not just the elite. As a result, there were impressive improvements in many areas including increased education enrollment, gains in employment, and reductions of inflation, economic inequality, child malnutrition and poverty.

The First Coup and Subsequent Plotting Despite this amazing progress, U.S. leaders wanted a return to the pre-Chávez situation and found willing collaborators among many of the Venezuelan elite. Perhaps recognizing that they couldn’t win a fair election, the opposition pursued another path

to power. In 2002, right-wing forces staged a violent coup, allegedly in the name of democracy, that removed Chávez. The U.S. leadership strongly supported the coup. However, the Venezuelan people and military ousted the coup plotters after two days and returned Chávez to power. see GUEST COLUMN Page 8

The Chilean Example

After socialist Salvador Allende was democratically elected President of Chile in 1970, Henry Kissinger, President Nixon’s National Security Advisor, said: “I don’t see why we need to stand by and watch a country go communist due to the irresponsibility of its people. The issues are much too important for the Chilean voters to be left to decide for themselves.”

Between 1970 and 1973, the U.S. used economic means to starve the Chilean economy and also funded opposition to President Allende in an effort to destabilize Chile. The result was the murderous 1973 military coup that yielded the brutal and devastating 17-year Pinochet military dictatorship.

U.S. Motives in Venezuela

I think the U.S. has two primary motives for its current attack on the Venezuelan government. Just as with Chile, the U.S. wants to prevent any approach other than neoliberal capitalism to be considered as viable and as an example for other nations. John Bolton, the U.S. national security adviser, clearly stated the other motive — gaining U.S. oil companies access to Venezuelan oil.

The U.S. has been applying its Chilean model on Venezuela since Hugo Chávez’s 1998 election victory.

Before then, Venezuela was a nation whose oil wealth primarily benefited U.S. oil companies, Venezuelan oligarchs and its upper class. Meanwhile there was a high level of poverty, huge wealth inequality and widespread racism and classism.

After the failed coup, the rightwing opposition, with U.S. support, continued efforts to destabilize the Chávez government. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) was one group that funded the opposition to subvert the democratic Venezuelan government. In addition, little reported is the fact that Venezuelan opposition activists, including Juan Guaidó, received training and generous funding from the U.S. Funding came especially from the National Endowment for Democracy, a U.S. group created to undermine governments the U.S. opposes.

Unsurprisingly, Guaidó’s positions are in line with those espoused by the U.S.

The Current Situation

President Nicolás Maduro has continued the Chávez program of benefiting all the population, not just the elite. Mainly as a result of this policy, Maduro has won two democratic elections, the most recent in May 2018. Nevertheless, life in Venezuela is difficult today with hyperinflation, hoarding of goods and numerous shortages.

The dramatic fall in oil prices and some bad economic decisions by the Maduro government have contributed to this situation. Nonetheless, despite the U.S. media downplaying the impact of U.S. sanctions and financial tactics, this U.S. economic warfare has probably played the major role in cre-

The revised North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) will soon come up for a Congressional vote to approve or disapprove. The House of Representatives will be the principal battleground over Trump’s recently renegotiated trade agreement for the U.S., Mexico and Canada. The question is whether our representatives will stand up for the people or go along with Trump on a bad deal.

Remarkably, there are some good points in the new version. Shadowy international tribunals that enable corporations to sue governments and override democracy will be eliminated for the most part. There are new I

ating this crisis. Unfortunately for Venezuelans, U.S. leaders don’t care about their lives. The U.S., unless stopped, is likely to continue its cruel economic warfare until it gets its way.

There is certainly substantial dissatisfaction with the Maduro government and the corruption. The population is polarized; however, one thing uniting the population is the overwhelming opposition to outside interference, especially the U.S. sanctions and use of the military. Perhaps one path to a resolution is negotiation between the government and the people mediated by the Vatican, Mexico and Uruguay. Given the overwhelming opposition to outside interference, groups that are fronts for U.S. interests must not be allowed to participate.

borne diseases. Worst of all, Big Pharma has been offered a slew of extreme patent protections that would virtually guarantee higher drug prices and fewer generic substitutes. The impact on public health in all three countries would be dire indeed.

Congress has the power to improve the revised NAFTA or kill it outright. Congressional action may happen soon so it will be important for citizens to be vigilant. Tell your representatives you want “fair trade” that benefits people and the environment not corporate-friendly “free trade” that profits large corporations at the expense of everyone else.

Beware the democratic socialists

I agree with The New York Times when they warn Nancy Pelosi not to give too much power to the newlyelected House Democrats who call themselves “democratic socialists.”

They will be a minority of the Democrats in the House of Representatives.

I don’t enjoy being unkind or insulting toward anyone, even the Republicans in Congress, a sizeable minority of whom are really scary “Survival-of-the-Fittest” Social Darwinists whose dream it is to abolish all of the safety-net programs, but, to me, you have to be a total and complete moron and idiot to call yourself a “democratic socialist,” and that includes Bernie Sanders, who I like and agree with 90 percent of the time.

First of all, they are not true socialists because they do not advocate abolishing our capitalist economic system.

Second of all, if you believe that anyone can be elected president of the United States who calls herself/ himself a “socialist,” then you must live in DreamLand and drank the Kool-Aid. Third of all, where I do agree with them is in their belief that our federal government should do more and spend more to help the poor, the near-poor, the lower-middle-class, and the middle-class who are struggling to survive and to pay their bills.

every single one of our traditional allies (if not all of them) have federal governments that do more and spend more (in proportion to their population sizes) than we do in the U.S. to help their citizens.

And, to paraphrase Al Pacino in the movie And Justice For All, for us in the U.S. to be right about this, all of these many other countries have to be wrong.

Action on climate change

I am a student at CSU and an intern for the climate action group Defend Our Future. As a young professional seeking to join the workforce, these are times of great uncertainty. My generation is uncertain about the careers we will enter and the families we will start, and we have to wonder if the world will be healthy enough to support those careers and families in the coming decades. This is not an exaggeration, and many young people feel real anxiety surrounding the future state of our planet if climate change is not addressed.

In February, President Donald Trump spoke for 1 hour and 22 minutes in the State of the Union Address and failed to mention climate change even once. Almost every president dating back to the elder George Bush has acknowledged the need to act on climate issues and the threat it represents to the United States and the world. In the past year, we have witnessed unprecedented weather events and two comprehensive reports regarding the urgency of the climate change.

Last week, President Trump squandered an opportunity to unite an uncertain generation that clamors for action.

This is an issue that dwarfs the threats expounded on by the current administration. Climate change is the real national emergency. We need stronger leadership from the White House, but instead this Administration continues to ignore the threat. That’s why we need our Senators Cory Gardner and Michael Bennet, and our new Congress to demand action on climate change.

t’s a familiar story: a rich country develops oil fields in a heavily indebted nation with lax environmental regulations. Local residents object, claiming that oil and gas extraction degrades their air, water and quality of life. Protests mount as the foreign energy company steamrolls the permitting process.

Locals appeal to elected officials, who are powerless to intervene. The rich country tries to influence local elections in the foreign country.

Complaints about spills and leaks pour in. Lawsuits fly. There are rumblings that civil disobedience may erupt if the foreign developers continue marching through the countryside.

This scene has been repeated around the world; in Nigeria, Ecuador, Indonesia and elsewhere. In what economists call the “resource curse,” countries with minerals or oil are exploited by foreign powers and end up with damaged land, poisoned waters and sullied air.

In a new twist to an old tale, however, the “foreign developer” in this case is Canada, and the “neighbor” is the United States. Specifically, Boulder County, Colorado.

The purchase deal stalled as financial and social pressures bore down on the oil and gas industry.

counties, that had banned hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, in 2012 and 2013. The oil and gas industry challenged those bans, and the legal fight reached the Colorado Supreme Court as the Encana deal was being negotiated. In early 2016, the fracking bans were still in place, oil bottomed out at $34 a barrel in February, Encana’s stock had dropped to below $5 (from its fiveyear high of more than $24 in the summer of 2014), and many companies in the oil and gas patch were stressed. Front Range citizens’ groups were organizing ballot measures to force new oil and gas development farther away from where people lived, and suburban parents who had never done anything more political than attend PTA meetings became “fracktivists” and planned civil disobedience actions in local libraries.

Then came the Colorado Supreme Court’s landmark May 2016 decision. That ruling invalidated all “local control” bans in favor of statewide authority to foster oil and gas development. That has historically meant that the state has approved every completed drilling BOULDER COUNTY’S INDEPENDENT VOICE

permit application. Citizens across the Front Range were outraged after working to get local fracking bans approved by voters.

The Supreme Court ruling, however, was good news for the Canadians.

Soon after, on Aug. 11, 2016, the CPPIB announced the purchase from Encana, a Canadian company with a U.S. subsidiary, and created a new company, Crestone Peak Resources. When the negotiating dust settled, the CPPIB had picked up a chunk of sub-surface Colorado real estate and wells producing on it for approximately 30 percent less than had been announced just months earlier. According to documents filed with the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC), Crestone became one of the largest companies in Colorado focusing on drilling in residential areas of the state’s most populous region, including more than 100 operating “legacy” wells in Boulder County that pre-dated larger-scale fracking and horizontal drilling facilities in wide use today. The CPPIB reported paying just $609 million for I

the Encana deal. An affiliate of the Broe Group, a Denver-based company, acquired 3 percent of Crestone.

The Canada Pension Plan was moving full-steam ahead into a Colorado firestorm.

The CPPIB is a quasi-governmental, $368 billion behemoth that invests payroll withholding taxes from Canada’s workers on behalf of 20 million contributors and beneficiaries, and pays benefits much like the U.S. Social Security system does.

Its portfolio is vast, and includes renewable energy projects, real estate, business ventures around the world, as well as fossil fuel production and pipelines.

Today, however, institutional investors like the CPPIB are becoming increasingly aware that new oil and gas development is burdened with with moral, legal, financial and ecological problems. CPPIB’s Colorado investment raises a pressing question for people living near Crestone’s operations as well as for Canadian beneficiaries across the country: With all the investments in the world available to them, why would widows in Winnepeg, retirees MARCH 21, 2019

TOXIC ASSETS It may simply be that the CPPIB was willing to go where other companies wouldn’t because the pension board thought it scored a deal from a distressed seller that would yield strong long-term results for its beneficiaries.

The CPPIB did not respond to multiple phone messages, email requests for an interview or a list of emailed questions sent over the course of more than a month, despite having an elaborate public relations department. Just before deadline, Darryl Konynenbelt, CPPIB’s director of global media relations wrote in an email: “CPPIB declines to comment. As the Encana/CPPIB/Crestone deal was being negotiated, several communities where Encana owned Colorado assets had voted to ban new hydraulic fracturing. Those bans were overturned by the Colorado Supreme Court in May 2016, just months prior to the final purchase in August 2016. Did that Supreme Court decision factor in the deal, and how?

Were CPPIB executives aware of the conflicts surrounding residential drilling in Colorado? Some of Crestone’s executives are or had been involved with all three entities (Encana, CPPIB and Crestone), including Avik Dey. If the executives were aware, what was appealing about working there if the local residents had voted against it and remain opposed to this day?

One question was whether the CPPIB knew it was purchasing what one oil and gas engineer (who wishes to remain anonymous for fear his business would be affected by criticizing the industry) told me were known as “toxic assets” by industry insiders: oil and gas leases located in controversial territory scattered among housing developments sprouting at nail-gun speed in the rapidly growing state.

In an interview, Encana spokesman Doug Hock said the fact that many of the company’s Colorado assets were located in areas where there was growing resistance to oil and gas development “was a factor” in the decision to sell to the CPPIB. He emphasized, however, that it wasn’t the main one. “Our D-J Basin assets certainly had challenges compared to our other assets,” Hock said.

“They were good wells, but they didn’t fit into our growth strategy.”

Pressed on the question about the timing of the sale and the last-minute price drop, Hock wrote in an email: “I’ve been told that there are non-disclosure agreements that preclude the parties from discussing those details.”

Crestone Peak, in an email from its public relations department responding, said there was nothing unusual about the price dropping from $900 million to $609 million.

“It’s very common in acquisitions for the valuation of a company to change from once the acquisition is announced to final closing,” it stated.

The company declined to discuss specifics of the sale or current valuation because it is a private company.

Whatever the reasons for the reduced price and Encana’s motivation to sell, the CPPIB must have known there would be substantial pushback in Colorado — and in Canada. Several of the CPPIB’s directors as well as several of Crestone’s board members and executives had worked for Encana.

This includes Avik Dey, a CPPIB managing director and head of energy and resources, who has worked for all three and is currently Chairman of the Board at Crestone Peak Resources. In a CPPIB press release on Oct. 8, 2015 announcing the deal, Dey said, “This investment offers attractive economics and aligns well with our strategy for the energy sector.”

Even in Canada, however, fracking is highly controversial. The fact that the CPPIB created a new oil and gas company in Colorado rather than simply investing in an existing one added another quizzical twist to the deal. “I don’t think they would ever have invested in a fracking company in Canada,” said John Bennett, a senior policy advisor to the environmental group Friends of the Earth Canada, where three of the country’s 10 provinces have banned the practice. Bennett says that Canada’s commitment to meeting the Paris climate goals is politically popular, which requires a concerted global flight from fossil fuels. “It’s a very odd thing for this pension fund to be doing,” he said. “Most MARCH 21, 2019

The socalled “divest/invest movement” has gained traction around the world, with many institutional investors and other pension funds choosing to divest from fossil fuel investments on financial, legal and/or moral grounds. What is the CPPIB’s current thinking about this movement, which encourages not just divestment, but also investment in companies striving to respond to what the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) recently suggested was a very short window for humanity to act dramatically and quickly before climate change becomes irreversible?

In the credentialed scientific community, there is virtually no disagreement that the planet is warming, human activities are largely responsible, and the burning of fossil fuels are a main cause of this warming and ancillary impacts. How do executives at CPPIB view this science, such as the recent IPCC report warning of severe climate-related threats to humanity? How do you view your continued investment in fossil fuel companies? Is there any cognitive dissonance in Canada trying to attain those goals in Canada and the CPPIB investing in more hydrocarbon exploration and production elsewhere?

Denise Melanson, 70, is one such Canadian. A retired medical social worker who lives in Richibucpo, New Brunswick, Melanson receives two pensions from the CPP: one that she paid into during her years of employment, and the other what she calls an “old-age” benefit that she started receiving when she was 65. When she learned that some of her benefits might be coming from fracking operations in Colorado, she said in a phone interview, “I was horrified.” Melanson had been involved in educating her community about the health and environmental impacts from fracking and in passing the moratorium in New Brunswick. “It appalls me that we are doing that to other people instead,” she said. “I’d much rather not be receiving money that was earned by making other people miserable.”

Most Coloradans, on the other hand, would probably be surprised to know that Canadian pensioners like Melanson are invested in drilling operations in the Centennial State’s suburban backyards.

Coloradans that do know about the Canadian connection are baffled. “I have to wonder if the beneficiaries of the pension fund’s investments understand what they’re investing in,” said Boulder County Commissioner Elise Jones. She said that as far as she knew, virtually every elected official in the county, including those from the county’s municipalities, as well as the overwhelming majority of people who live here, oppose the kind of residential drilling plans that Crestone has proposed — and wish they could halt it. Concerns range from the planned drilling locations in and around homes, schools and Boulder County Open Space holdings, to negative health effects from the industrial facilities’ emissions, to the oil and gas industry’s impact on the Denver metropolitan area’s persistently poor air quality, to climate change impacts from fossil fuel developments. “Do these pensioners know how much opposition there is to their investment?” Jones wonders. “If they did, they’d realize this is not wise or ethical. boggles the mind.”

Along with its purchase of these controversial assets, Crestone also invested in Colorado’s 2018 election. Oil and gas issues figured prominently up and down the ballot, from the governor’s race to several ballot initiatives. Crestone Peak contributed $607,500 toward the tens of millions of dollars the industry contributed during Colorado’s last election cycle to support groups that directly or indirectly opposed Proposition 112, the failed setback initiative that would have required new oil and gas development to be placed at least 2,500 feet from homes and schools. Crestone donated to the pro-industry group Protect Colorado, which campaigned to defeat Proposition 112, and other political groups supporting Republican state legis-

lature candidates that unswervingly support the oil and gas industry. $300,000 of those contributions went to a group that supported Republican candidates for the state senate, which remained in Republican control until the last election and had reliably killed any legislation opposed by the energy industry.

D.C., reviewed Crestone’s contributions for their legality with regard to both federal and Colorado campaign laws, at my request. Federal law requires that foreign-owned companies’ contributions to state campaigns meet a twopart test: the contributions must be drawn from money made from U.S. operations; and that the person making the decision to donate is a U.S. citizen. Since Crestone is a privately held, Canadian-owned company whose only public financial disclosure indicated the company’s value has declined since being formed, it is not obvious where the money came from or who made the decision to contribute to the election. “How would you know?” Graham asked.

Crestone stated in an email that it follows all state and federal laws, and as a company operating in Colorado, “Crestone allocates a certain amount of funds each year to dedicate to organizations and initiatives that are important to our team. Crestone leadership ultimately makes the decision on which organizations these funds are donated to.”

As far as Colorado law is concerned, the Senate Majority Fund is known as a 527 political organization, which can receive unlimited contributions from anybody, including foreign entities, said Steve Bouey, the campaign finance program manager for the Colorado Secretary of State’s office. The other organizations that Crestone contributed to include “independent expenditure committees,” which are also allowed to legally receive contributions from foreign-owned corporations.

“Regardless of whether any laws were broken,” said Graham from the Campaign Legal Center, the CPPIB “spent a substantial amount of money trying to influence Colorado voters. I think it’s worth bringing to the public’s attention.”

recalls trying to sleep with her bed shaking through the night. Fearful and concerned, she asked other neighbors if they had experienced the same thing, and soon dozens of people were sharing stories on social media and asking what this new company Crestone was doing to rattle their lives so viscerally. “We never got a straight answer,” Korber said.

After the rumblings stopped with that phase of the project, Crestone pressed on. Soon, Erie residents were complaining at COGCC meetings and on the agency’s website about noxious smells, leaks, nosebleeds, headaches, industrial noises and lights burning all night outside their bedroom windows. Korber learned that Crestone was applying for even more permits to drill, and drove to Denver last October to speak at a COGCC meeting. She told the commissioners, with her best grandmother-of-five scolding voice: “I bet that not one of you lives in Erie.”

Not one of the nine commissioners do.

Erie’s experience with Crestone isn’t isolated.

The number of complaints filed against Crestone is almost twice as many as the next five oil and gas companies conducting business in Colorado combined. More than 1,000 complaints against Crestone’s operations were filed with the COGCC between November 2016 and February 2019. The only other company that comes anywhere close to that number is Extraction Oil and Gas, another relatively new company with holdings in many residential areas on the Front Range (with 245 complaints over the same time period). The other major operators in the D-J Basin, including Noble, Anadarko/Kerr McGee, PDC and SRC collectively only had 350 complaints over the same time period. One likely reason: most of the other top producers are operating on agricultural lands or in much less populated areas.

complaint process in Erie by organizing complaining campaigns. In their email response to questions, Crestone’s public relations department said that, “while none of the complaints resulted in a violation of state standards by the COGCC or the CDPHE [Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment], we knew we needed to make some changes in our operations. We took an above-and-beyond approach to further lessen the temporary impacts that we may have on neighboring communities.”

One such flurry of impacts and complaints came after Crestone’s operations caused a release of toxic gases at a site in Erie that occurred just 25 yards from the Aspen Ridge Preparatory School playground in September 2017. Crestone was plugging and abandoning a set of wells, and had been venting large quantities of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for an indeterminate amount of time before a resident smelled noxious fumes and complained to the COGCC. The agency documented a large release of VOCs related to oil and gas emissions that have been linked to a number of health problems in Colorado and around the world, including increased rates of asthma, childhood leukemia and low-birth weight babies. Those toxic emissions wafted directly onto the school playground of the Kiddie Academy Childcare Center and Aspen Ridge, according to the COGCC’s report on the incident.

The COGCC ordered Crestone to cease operations until the problem was fixed, but parents say they didn’t hear about the leak for months.

Mark Kadlecek, who has three children who attended Aspen Ridge, found the “Notice of Alleged Violation” posted on the COGCC website on Oct. 25, more than six weeks after the violation.

Kadlecek wrote to the COGCC and local elected officials, sputtering outrage. “All three of my young children between the ages of 6 and 8 years old attend Aspen Ridge,” he wrote. “This is a place that I thought they would be safe.” Kadlecek tried to make the point that so many in 16

“Common sense mandates that oil and gas operations do not belong in close proximity to homes and schools,” he wrote.

After the public outcry, Crestone issued a statement that was so bland it further inflamed residents: “We sincerely apologize for this oversight.” In its emailed statement, Crestone added, “Activity at the location wrapped up with no further incidents.”

The COGCC fined Crestone $10,000, according to Mike Leonard, the agency’s community relations manager.

or traffic or vibrations or smells or lights or emissions — need to be reported to different agencies, which frequently don’t report to each other.

The bigger picture, he says, is that when companies like Crestone come into a small community such as Erie, dangling potential tax revenue and claiming (as Crestone spokesman Oates told a community meeting) that there are “no health impacts” from fracking, it is almost impossible not to be steamrolled.

Local elected officials in places such as Erie, Broomfield and Boulder say they are hamstrung by state laws that limit their ability to say no to new oil and gas development. “Erie is fracked,” Van Woudenberg said in an interview. “We lost. We’re the cautionary tale.”

A FRAUGHT INVESTMENT? Besides the fact that Crestone is seeking to operate in communities that oppose it, there’s a larger question for the CPPIB: Is residential drilling in Colorado a smart investment?

Crestone continues to face legal challenges that are increasing the I

cost of doing business in Colorado.

The company has been involved in lawsuits, protests, leaks and alleged violations of state regulations in multiple communities, including in Weld County and Broomfield, a fast-growing city and county halfway between Boulder and Denver. Crestone, in turn, has sued the state and at least one other oil and gas company, alleging interference in its operations.

From what is known about Crestone’s financial picture, it hasn’t performed well to date. While Crestone is private, there are several clues that the CPPIB’s Colorado investment may be problematic. As of Feb. 15, 2019, the CPPIB’s website stated that the value of the investment had dropped to $543 million from the purchase price of $609 million, more than a 10 percent decline.

Another possible clue about Crestone’s financial situation comes from Extraction Oil and Gas, which went public in October 2016 at almost the same time the Encana/ CPPIB/Crestone deal was finalized.

to-well-pad” comparison between the two companies, since one is publicly traded and one is private, with substantially different corporate structures and reporting requirements. Still, many characteristics are similar, including the fact that both companies started by purchasing larger companies’ “toxic assets” in populated communities along the Front Range. Both are buffeted by the oil price roller coaster, from highs above $100 a barrel in late 2014 to a low of below $40 in early 2016, only rebounding to the high $50 range today. Crestone and Extraction are also number one and number two in citizen complaints filed against them with the COGCC among the top six producers in the state.

Another fiduciary clue: Extraction was trading for $23 a share around the time of its October 2016 IPO. Its stock tumbled to below $4/share — more than an 80 percent drop — before rebounding to $4.54 after its recent earnings report in late February 2019. It then promptly dropped to $3.60 a share in early March.

Analysts are mixed about the future of shale development, with some predicting slow growth in 2019 and others convinced that many parts of the industry are burdened with debt and uncertainty about future regulatory regimes, international price fluctuations and the increasingly competitive cost of renewable energy technology. Other investors remain bullish on oil stocks but are moving away from riskier investments in politically

volatile countries such as Venezuela, Russia and Saudi Arabia — and are looking to U.S. fracking operations as a safer alternative.

Both Noble Energy and Anadarko reported record Colorado oil production in 2018.

From a longer-term perspective, a growing number of analysts say that investments in fossil fuel companies don’t make sense at a time when many fracking operations are losing money, evidence mounts that oil and gas operations have significant and growing environmental and health impacts, liability from abandoned wells is getting more attention, and places like Boulder County and California are aggressively moving towards decarbonizing their energy supply.

Then, there’s climate change, looming like a drilling rig’s late afternoon shadow over the fossil fuel investment debate. Canada, a signatory to the Paris climate agreement, faces some cognitive dissonance with the CPPIB’s fossil fuel portfolio.

Financial and legal analysts as well as climate activists point out that Canada cannot export its fossil fuel investments and still claim it is moving to reduce its carbon footprint. In a report released in January entitled “It is Time,” two Canadian law professors, Janis Sarra of the University of British Columbia and Cynthia Williams of the Osgoode Hall Law School at York University, conclude

that, “The CPPIB has enormous potential to help shift governance practice to meet the issues discussed in this report.”

That potential has yet to be unleashed, said Williams in an interview. Canada is already heavily invested in the oil and gas sector, and all recent indicators are that those investments “already have a lot of risk,” she said, partly exemplified by the drop in value of the Canadian dollar and declining returns from oil and gas investments in comparison to other sectors. “Why would the CPP be doubling down on oil and gas developments?” she asked.

Various organizations in Canada have tried to push the CPPIB toward a more sustainable, lowercarbon portfolio, without much success, said Bennet of Friends of the Earth Canada. The CPPIB has expressly avoided committing itself to “Environmental, Social, and Governance” (ESG) investments, stating that, “Consistent with the CPP Investment Board’s belief that constraints decrease returns and/or increase risk over time, we do not screen stocks or eliminate investments based on ESG factors. The CPP Investment Board considers the securities of any issuer all of whose businesses are lawful, and would be lawful if carried on in Canada, as eligible for investment.”

As many affected residents have noted, what is lawful in Colorado isn’t necessarily admirable. Many state laws were written in an earlier era of oil and gas exploration. They never anticipated new horizontal drilling and fracking techniques that allow companies like Crestone to build pads of 10, 20 and 30 wells and drill underneath hundreds of people’s homes for miles in every direction.

These well pads are accompanied by rows of storage tanks, condensers, combustors, separators and thousands of truck trips a day, in and out of these mini-industrial complexes located in close proximity to housing developments, schools, playgrounds, watercourses and otherwise baby stroller-packed suburban neighborhoods.

pension funds around the world. As concerns about climate change resonate across the globe, investments in fossil fuel companies are increasingly seen as bad bets. Viable alternatives are emerging — with better financial rewards.

In the U.S., the burgeoning divestment movement has made great strides in the past few years, ever since Stanford made headlines by selling off its coal stocks in 2014.

Clara Vondrich, the global director of DivestInvest, a philanthropy movement that encourages large institutional investors to move away from fossil fuels in favor of more sustainable investments, said since 2014, more than 1,000 institutional investors have committed to fossil-free investments, with growth of capital investments rising from $52 billion to more than $8 trillion today.

Vondrich said that the divest/ invest movement has three core pillars: moral, financial and legal. “The moral argument doesn’t sway large institutional investors,” she acknowledged. “But the financials do.”

Various backdated investment comparisons such as those done by the U.S. divestment advocacy group As You Sow confirm that portfolios without fossil fuel investments would have performed better than with them.

“You’re losing money for your beneficiaries” by investing in fossil fuels, Vondrich said. “These are underperforming assets that are also burning up the planet.”

Now, she said, the CPPIB and other large investors “increasingly have a fiduciary duty to explain why they don’t divest, rather than the other way around.”

Mark Campanele, founder of the U.K.-based Carbontracker, said that huge advances in electric vehicles are another factor likely to suppress oil demand and reduce price fluctuations that invite oil speculation. “The question for CPPIB is whether betting long-term on an old or dying technology such as the internal combustion engine is the sort of risk otherwise prudent pension funds should be taking on behalf of its members?”

that the world’s oil and gas reserves cannot all be extracted and burned if Earth is to remain a livable planet for billions of humans. Since these reserves are baked into oil companies’ stock prices, they will be faced with inventory they will never be able to sell.

“Stranded assets” has moved from a fringe idea to the mainstream, in part because scientists have quantified the problem in stark terms: In a 2015 report published by Nature, the authors state that “a third of oil reserves, half of gas reserves and over 80 percent of current coal reserves should remain unused from 2010 to 2050 in order to meet the [Paris agreement’s] target of 2°C.”

ERIE, CALLING EDMONTON Crestone is undeterred by the mounting complaints and continues to resist the community opposition.

The company is moving forward with its CDP in Boulder County, which is being challenged by the County, weaving its way through the court system and COGCC approval process.

At a January 2019 conference hosted by the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation, Crestone spokesman Oates told the audience that the company had met all of the requirements laid out by the COGCC for its drilling plans, and Crestone would forge ahead into Boulder County despite citizen and local governments’ objections. “It is how, not if, we are going to drill,” Oates told the audience.

Coloradans (LOGIC), attended the conference and was taken aback by the “arrogance” of Oates’ remarks.

In response to multiple communities’ concerns ever since Crestone started doing business in Colorado, Loflin said, Crestone has only proposed moving “closer to homes, in higher risk areas, in larger scale developments.”

In its email, Crestone disputes this and says it aims “to operate safely, responsibly, efficiently and with minimal impact on local communities, while acting as good stewards for the land, air and water. This is a priority for us because as Coloradans, we value these natural assets, and we live here, too.”

Back in Erie, grandmother of five Korber says that she and her neighbors suffer not just the proximity of the industrial operations, but also from the discord that those operations have unleashed on their community. She has joined a lawsuit against her elected officials for not doing more to protect Erie citizens.

Korber’s message to the CPPIB? “Why don’t you drill next to the homes of the people where you’re sending those retirement checks?”

New Brunswick retiree Melanson has a lot of sympathy for people like Korber, and plans to write a letter to the CPPIB. “It’s utterly indecent, what they’re doing,” she said. “I don’t want my pension coming from things like that.”

arlier this year, the City of Boulder came out with its 2017 Greenhouse Gas Inventory, and the results look pretty good: a 16-percent reduction in emissions compared to 2005 levels — a mark of progress reached three years earlier than expected.

The inventory followed a global protocol for tracking community emissions and collecting data within cities’ boundaries for the consumption of electricity, natural gas, vehicle petroleum fuel and waste generation. As of 2017, Boulder emits 1.5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year. This means that each resident, on average, is responsible for 14 metric tons per year. By 2050, Boulder wants to produce less than 400,000 metric tons of greenhouse gases, or three metric tons per person, reducing emissions by 80 percent based on 2005 levels.

Reducing the City of Boulder’s greenhouse gas emissions has been a unified effort, according to Kimberlee Rankin, sustainability coordinator for the City of Boulder. From the City’s emissions reduction programs to community members stepping up and recycling or putting solar on their roofs, the pieces are coming together. But the largest factor in reaching the 16-percent reduction ahead of schedule, according to Rankin, has been Xcel Energy’s effort to add renewables to its grid.

“There is less carbon intensity associated with electricity consumption because the grid is getting cleaner,” she says.

Boulder has also seen an overall decrease in electricity and natural gas consumption, despite the city’s economic and population growth, Rankin says.

On a smaller scale, the City’s Zero Waste Program has contributed to the reduction of emissions. Landfill waste in particular has decreased significantly, according to Rankin, due to the community focus on recycling and composting.

nificant solar infrastructure. But as the grid gets cleaner and electricity becomes less carbon intensive, transportation is going to account for more than 50 percent of Boulder’s emissions, Rankin says.

Boulder’s Transportation Department is currently updating the transportation master plan, and alongside Boulder’s Climate Initiatives Department, are looking at ways to reduce emissions from vehicles, either by getting people out of single occupancy vehicles or making electric cars more prominent.

Still, using more renewable energy and reducing car trips may not be enough to reduce overall emissions, according to a recent report carried out by the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group. Consumption of goods and services (i.e., food, clothing, electronic equipment, air travel, delivery trucks, etc.) should also be part of the equation in a city’s effort to reduce emissions.

Boulder’s greenhouse gas emissions inventory was conducted within the City’s limits, and therefore doesn’t incorporate emissions from transboundary activities such as the purchases of goods and services, which are difficult to track.

“But the City has prioritized [measuring and reducing the emissions related to] these activities within its Climate Commitment goals” in the coming years, says Rankin, as around 40 percent of household emissions are generated by these transboundary activities.

By reducing local emissions, the City is hoping to outpace the threat of catastrophic climate change, given that cities are responsible for 70 percent of global emissions. But the City can’t do it alone. As Rankin says: “We need the community’s engagement because it’s going to take everyone’s effort to reach these goals.”

Keeping up with climate change

Still, the larger goals of reaching 100-percent renewable electricity and 50-percent emissions reduction by 2030 may not be enough in light of recent reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which urge extreme and immediate emissions reductions to avoid catastrophic climate change. “Now we have to reduce emissions at a much faster rate than we’re planning on,” Rankin says. “When we did the math that meant meeting our 2050 goal in 2030.”

The goal is daunting, yet there is a strategy: Continuing to pursue local electric utility development through municipalization, solar energy, electric transportation and community outreach, are, according to Rankin, the keys to success.

“Even though Xcel Energy has plans to continue to improve the grid, a local utility enables the City to reach higher levels of renewables faster,” Rankin says. “Local electric utility development is a crucial component of Boulder’s energy strategy to bring clean, local, affordable and reliable electricity to the community.”

Scotland-based session group Ímar bring their blend of traditional music to the Wildflower Pavilion

T

he story of Ímar — the traditional Irish music group, not the ninth-century Viking king the band is named after — starts, unsurprisingly, in a bar. (Though maybe the story of Ímar the Viking king starts in a bar as well... we didn’t do a lot of background on him.)

The surprising part? The bar’s in Glasgow, Scotland.

“We’re not even mostly Scottish. I’m the only Scottish one,” concertina player Mohsen Amini says over the phone on a Friday afternoon.

Bodhrán player Adam Brown is from England, uilleann pipe player Ryan Murphy’s “the Irish one,” Amini says, and fiddler Tom Callister and bouzouki player Adam Rhodes are from Isle of Man. “So it’s kind of strange that we’re in Scotland at all, but they all just came to me because they love me,” Amini muses. “That’s what I like to tell myself anyway.”

Not to diminish the powerful bond between these virtuosic players, but Glasgow’s storied traditional music scene might have a little bit to do with the band’s chosen homebase as well.

As one of UNESCO’s Cities of Music, the folk music scene is alive and well in Glasgow. And nowhere does it flourish more than in the pubs, which brings us back to how the five lads of Ímar got to be a BOULDER COUNTY’S INDEPENDENT VOICE

band in the first place.

If we’re to tell the story correctly, it starts long before the Wednesday night jam sessions at Sloan’s pub in Glasgow, back to when the five gentlemen of Ímar were teenagers participating in the All-Ireland Fleadh, a music festival celebrating the world’s best Irish traditional music, song, dance and language. Between the five members of Ímar they have amassed nine All-Ireland titles.

They went their separate ways through the years, collecting degrees, accolades and experience as they went. But it was the siren song of Glasgow’s music scene that lured each of the members of Ímar in, one by one. It was only a matter of time before the five of them crossed paths.

“Myself, Ryan [Murphy] and Adam Brown, we were really good friends growing up and then we met the other boys later on a couple of years ago when they moved to Glasgow,” Amini says. “Of course we all grew up listening to the same music. And we’d all go out for a couple of drinks, a couple of tunes, and we’d always meet up and try to find a pub to play in. We found a club called Sloan’s. It’s a bar just in the middle of Glasgow. We just went in every Wednesday night and it always ended up just being the five of us.

boys’ and then we turn it over and go about our day and forget about it. And it went on for ages... for ages.”

It’s hard to question why it took some time to get Ímar off the ground considering the demands of the many outside projects each of the five musicians was already participating in — Mànran, RURA, Talisk, Barrule, Cara, Mabon, Mec Lir and The Lowground, each dishing out a variation on blended folk and traditional tunes from the region.

But their bond as musicians was strong, and the music they created together demanded their collective focus. Today, Ímar has released two albums, 2017’s Afterlight and last year’s Avalanche.

“It’s all our favorite parts of Manx music, Scottish music and Irish music,” Amini says.

The words “breathtaking” and “virtuosic” and “jaw-dropping” have been handily thrown around in discussing Ímar’s two albums — and with just cause. Just watch the band’s video for “L’Air Mignonne”; watch the way they

smile, eyes closed, as their fingers run effortless races across keys and strings. There’s no room for failure in this group, but there also seems little chance of it.

This is dance music, meant to ease your troubles for an evening, meant to go down smooth with a pint or three.

This, Amini says, is what makes session music so universally beloved.

“There’s not a place in the world where they don’t really relate with session music,” he says of the members’ travels across the globe with Ímar and their other projects. “When we play there’s no words so you can’t misunderstand, so everyone just feels the music. We don’t try to make it accessible or dumb it down, but it’s pretty accessible music.

Everyone knows when to clap and whether to cheer. It’s pretty magical that way.”

Mixing it up

Beach Fossil’s Dustin Payseur on creating a new sound

F

or Dustin Payseur, changing the sound of Beach Fossils wasn’t a matter of abandoning what had come before.

Rather, the frontman of the Brooklyn indie-rock outfit says moving from the low-fi sound of its first two albums to the lush pop songs of Somersault, released in 2017, is a matter of embracing music he’s long liked — and bringing the full band into the recording mix.

“I’d always loved that kind of music,” Payseur says in a recent phone interview of the orchestral pop, complete with arranged strings and horns. “But we never really had the budget to do it.

“Budget aside, I never knew how to get people together to do that. How do you find a harpsichord player? I didn’t know. We ended up calling all these people and got them into the studio and it was great.”

The strings, harpsichord and flute were added after the guitars, bass and drums had been recorded on each track.

But the songs aren’t standard Payseur compositions with the orchestral elements dropped on top.

“It’s a little bit of both,” he says.

“This album is the first I’ve written with other members rather than a solo project. The dynamics of writing were different because of that and we definitely made space in the songs for that stuff.”

In large part, Payseur says, he’d never written with his bandmates because Beach Fossils had been touring for much of the previous four years.

Plus, the band took some time off to become the punk band Nasty Bits in the short-lived HBO ’70s music industry drama series Vinyl.

Before that, Payseur, who started Beach Fossils as a way to expand his solo work, wrote all the songs.

“I played music in high school, but it was dramatically different than Beach Fossils,” Payseur says. “I’ve got recordings in pretty much every genre I could think of. This is the one that stuck or that people liked the most.”

That genre, or more specifically the sound, is lo-fi, recordings that are of lower fidelity than usual, a method used by, among others, Pavement and Beck to create rougher, more immediate records.

“In lo-fi music, there’s a lot of character and this mysterious sound,” Payseur says. “You listen to lo-fi jazz records or Beatles demos and there’s something in the grit in it that feels so personal and intimate.”

The lo-fi approach also occurred because Payseur didn’t have any gear other than a guitar and pre-amp when he made his first two albums.

“Even the bass on the first record is on guitar,” he says. “I just played it on the lower strings. That means the bass

player [now] has to play really high on the neck live. That’s actually kind of fun.”

On the other side of sound, the songs from Somersault require a different approach for the band to make them sound similar to the recorded version on stage.

“We re-create as much as we can with keyboards,” Payseur says. “We do have a trumpet player. We’re thinking about doing an orchestral thing for some shows, but not for a whole tour.”

Beach Fossils is back to touring hard, having played Europe in the late summer and taking all of four days off before playing its first U.S. show of the fall.

Their live set includes a handful of Somersault songs. Peyseur says he still believes in playing a lot of a new records, even in the era when records don’t sell.

But the set also includes plenty of material from the first two albums.

“We do a lot of songs people want to hear and deep cuts people might not be familiar with,” Payseur says. “But we don’t always play the popular songs that people call out for. We’re playing for ourselves and playing what we want to. It’s kind of selfish. But I think that’s how you get the best shows.”

And, Payseur says, with plenty of touring under the band’s belt, Beach Fossils should be road tight every night.

“Or we’ll just keep drinking and we get a little loose,” Payseur says. “We try to mix it up that way.”

W

hen Amanda Balestrieri says “see you in court,” it’s an offer, not a threat.

As director of Seicento Baroque Ensemble, she knows just how much music originated in the royal courts of the 17th and 18th centuries. And for the group’s final concert of the 2018–19 season, she is pulling music from the courts of England, France and other European countries into a single program. “In Your Court: A Royal Tour” will be performed March 22-24 in Boulder, Denver and Longmont.

In addition to the singers of Seicento, the concert features guest vocal soloists and local freelance instrumentalists who make up a small orchestra. The vocalists are students or recent graduates who wanted more experience with the Baroque style.

The topic of music from the royal courts was selected in advance, before Seicento even knew who their director would be for this year. It was intentionally open-ended, so when Balestrieri sat down to build the program she had a lot of leeway. “My first thought was to have the sense of the pomp and circumstance” in the courts, she says. “The second thought was to have pieces that specifically reference monarchs or were written by them.”

Portions of the program directly reflect this. The first set is titled “Pomp and Circumstance” and features a triumphal march from the French court by Marc-Antoine Charpentier, as well as pieces by Henry Purcell and William Byrd written for the English court of their times.

There is also a piece by Dom Jão (King John) IV of Portugal, and a piece written in praise of Poland’s Prince Władislaw on the occasion of a visit to the Medici court in Florence, Italy.

There are other musical topics in the program, including sets of pieces titled “Sacred Music for the French Court,” “A Royal View of Rural Life” and “Reflections on Death.” The last is followed by the one Russian piece on the program, an Easter Canon by Nikolay Diletsky, representing resurrection.

Almost every piece, in some way, reflects on the relationship between the composer and his patrons, or life at court more generally. Part of the opening set is a piece by Purcell, “Welcome Vicegerent of the Mighty King,” which, Balestrieri says, “was written for the return of Charles II to London — to lick his boots, basically.”

relationship between royal patrons and musicians in the Baroque era.

“These high-flown praises were written because they had to be,” she says.

“The music was funded by people who had power and money. [Charles II] was the holder of the purse strings, as well as the monarch who could slap you in jail, yet we have absolutely drop-dead gorgeous music that we would not want to be without.”

Another example of over-the-top praise is the prologue to an opera by Francesca Caccini, one of the few active women composers of the era. The opera was written for Prince Władislaw’s visit to the Medici Court. Seicento will only perform the prologue, which features extravagant compliments for the visitor.

A different kind of relationship between patron and musician is suggested in “O Lord, Make Thy Servant Elizabeth our Queen” by William Byrd, written for Elizabeth I of England. The music is filled with dissonances and harsh I

clashes between voices, particularly in the words “her” in the phrase “give her her heart’s desire.” Those dissonances, Balestrieri says, may refer to the fact that Byrd, a devout Catholic, was not comfortable in Elizabeth’s Protestant court.

“We don’t know for sure, but within the community of people who sing this music, there is a feeling that the way it’s set and where the clashes occur indicates that there is [a hidden meaning],” Balestrieri says. “When you listen to it and you know what the words are, those clashes don’t entirely make sense.”

With so much music composed to send a message to monarchs and courtiers, Balestrieri treasurers a movement from Johann Kaspar Kerll’s Mass for the Dead. “One of the things I love about the Kerll [piece] is that he remarked that he wrote this for the peace of his own soul, which I thought was touching because it shows you this wasn’t just written to welcome the king back,” she says.

Similar layers of meaning — directed at the monarch or the courtiers, who were the only people who would have heard most of the music on the concert, since it was not performed publicly — can be found in every piece. All of that information is covered in Balestrieri’s extensive notes that will be printed in the program — information she is happy to share with Seicento’s audience.

In other words, she extends an invitation, not a summons: Come see us in court!

Hollywood’s golden year Longmont’s Trojan Movie House and Art Cinema celebrates 1939

t’s hard to overstate the significance of 1939 in American cinema.

Even though the movies were nearly four decades old, a series of events and artistic developments conspired to bring Hollywood into maturity. Some of these advancements were technological: sound films were the standard and three-strip Technicolor was widely available. Others were artistic: German Expressionism and French Poetic Realism brought style and flair to genre films, while Soviet montage gave the blockbuster its climax. Add to this a vast number of talented filmmakers, writers, actors, technicians and composers fleeing Europe and settling in Los Angeles and you get a sense something magical was happening. This was Hollywood’s watershed moment. From here on out, Hollywood would be a state of mind.

Eighty years later, these movies still resonate, entertain and awe. And thanks to the Trojan Movie House and Art Cinema’s latest series — 1939: Hollywood’s Greatest Year (March 21–31) — you can step, once again, into the past and bask in the familiar images of yesteryear with five of the year’s best: Union Pacific, Gunga Din, Son of Frankenstein, Gone With the Wind and The Wizard ON THE BILL: 1939 — of Oz. HOLLYWOOD’S GREATEST YEAR ‘Union Pacific,’ Few films have had the staying power of Wizard March 21, 7 p.m. of Oz (March 31) and for good reasons. Beyond the ‘Gunga Din,’ spectacle of the show — and Judy Garland’s heartMarch 28, 7 p.m.

‘Son of Frankenstein,’ breaking rendition of “Over the Rainbow” — Oz will March 29, 7 p.m. forever hold relevancy as long as the machinations ‘Gone With the Wind,’ of government and politics still boil down to a little March 30, 7 p.m. man behind the curtain. Though MGM changed ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ March 31, 2 p.m. much of L. Frank Baum’s original book — a thinly Trojan Movie House and veiled allegory about populism in politics — you Art Cinema, 513 Main St., Longmont, longmonttheatre.org/ won’t have to look too hard to see the 21st century staring back at you. Oh, how little things have movies changed.

Allegories aside, Oz is one of the greatest children’s films ever made. Ditto to Gunga Din (March 28), an adventure movie based on Rudyard Kipling’s poem and starring the dashing Cary Grant at his most roguish. If that doesn’t get you in the door, nothing will.

There’s a whole gallery of rogues in Union Pacific (March 21), but when a movie stars Barbara Stanwyck, the rogues get second billing. Here Stanwyck dons an Irish brogue in a big-budget work of historical fiction. Made in ’39, but set in 1862, it shouldn’t be much of a surprise that Union Pacific’s treatment of Native Americans is less than refined. Yet, Union Pacific heartily celebrates the immigrant contribution to what would have been America’s most significant technological accomplishments to date.

And much like Gone With the Wind (March 30), these movies have a messy, often repugnant, approach to race and gender. Filmmakers and storytellers in 1939 were no less flawed than the filmmakers and storytellers of today, but that does not mean we should excuse their shortsightedness or ignore them altogether. As film critic Manny Faber loved to point out, every movie transmits the DNA of its time. There are lessons to be learned here and excitement to be found; we just need to watch closely.

ittle is more welcome on a cold Colorado evening than a plate of hot food by a sizzling fire. One recent night at Rayback Collective, we ordered the chicken tikka masala and saag combo from one of the food trucks parked outside: Tibet’s Restaurant and Bar. While seated around the Collective’s fire pit, we dove straight into the warm and creamy tandoori roasted chicken drenched in a mild yet flavorful tomato sauce. The accompanying saag had hints of cilantro and garlic, and the rice was a delectable fluffy companion. $11.

uch like Brussels sprouts, beets have become quite the food craze in recent years. No longer relegated to the pickled variety served for Sunday lunch at Grandma’s or in the school cafeteria, these deep magenta root vegetables are finding their way into dishes across the board, not least of which are craft cocktails.

At Denver’s eminent Root Down restaurants, the Beet Down combines gin, Canton, Aperol, beet, lemon and mint into a surprisingly refreshing and sippable cocktail. The earthiness of the beet and Aperol paired well with the juniper in the gin and ginger of the Canton. Even if you can’t bring yourself to start eating beets, this cocktail will make you love drinking them. $12.

Just desserts delivered when baking on the right side of the brain

I

’ve sometimes been accused of living in my head. At the very least I cook in my head and it spills into the kitchen. It can get pretty messy... and tasty.

I

Here’s a good example: A writing deadline was on my mind last week, so naturally I was dawdling in the kitchen. It was not time to eat, but I ended up creating a vegan, gluten-free treat along with the requisite paragraphs.

Leaning on a counter, I found myself staring at a bag of unsweetened coconut flakes while I was making tea. It seemed appropriate to put some in the toaster see NIBBLES Page 46

oven because coconut tastes so much better when toasted golden brown. I wasn’t making them for any particular purpose.

I hung out because in the past I’ve gone back to write and suffered cardiac panic when the smoke alarm went off. I spied the mixed nuts from the holidays I had finally shelled while watching a Nuggets game. The oven was hot, so I figured I might as well make the pecans, almonds, hazelnuts and Brazil nuts taste better, too. Toasting them took a lot longer than the coconut, but the resulting coconut/ nut aromatherapeutic effect was uplifting.

Later that afternoon I was back against the fridge meditating upon the beauty of caramelization and layers of flavor. Somehow this led to the decision that the toasted coconut and nuts needed to be combined with a veneer of sweet glaze.

There was a problem. I had no honey, maple syrup, sugar or corn syrup, having (wisely) emptied my home of all easy forms of sugar. I am not safe around them. The only sweet thing in my pantry was a bag of aged, unattractive ground date pellets in oat flour that looked like rabbit food or worse.

I didn’t want to just mix the dates with the coconut and nuts. Flashing back to a reference to date syrup in food history, I made my own by microwaving the pellets with water into a thin syrup. I added a little ground cinnamon and ginger and extra virgin olive oil.

I combined the toasted coconut, nuts and syrup. I could have stopped there, but

universe told me to add a handful of Rice Krispies. They snapped. They crackled.

They popped as I worked them in. I coated a glass pie pan with olive oil, pressed the mixture flat and sprinkled it with a little sea salt because everything sweet is dusted with salt these days it seems. I put it in a 300-degree oven for an hour or so.

I did not stir it, allowing it to achieve maximum crunch.

When I experience one of these culinary fugues, I always love that first taste because until that moment I had been cooking conceptually without tasting anything. The resulting 21st-century Rice Krispies treats were crackly yet chewy, deeply nutty and glazed with enough earthy sweetness and spice to be certified crave-able.

If I’d had these ingredients around, too, I might well have added a little butter, nut butter, sunflower seeds, lemon zest, vanilla, minced Granny Smith apple, popcorn or chopped, dried Mediterranean apricots. It might have ascended to taste glory if I had drizzled a melted 70-percent cocoa dark chocolate bar over it, but the dish lacked nothing. It was exactly what it was supposed to be.

The advantage to not trying to cook anything in particular is that you are blissfully free of expectations and emotional baggage.

It’s a great snack; it also topped my oatmeal and yogurt, and was nutritionally pretty good. I could sell it at the farmers market, except I’ll never make it again exactly like this. That’s the breaks when you bake on the right side of the brain.

Longmont Restaurant Week returns with unique events and dining specials at 49 establishments

L

ongmont Restaurant Week exceeded expectations when it launched last year. Folks at the Longmont Chamber of Commerce, including a handful of motivated Longmont restaurateurs, set a goal of getting 30 food establishments to offer meals at the ridiculously low price of $18.71 (in honor of the year Longmont was founded).

Lo and behold, the Chamber got 42 food businesses to sign up and co-organizer Karen Stallard said the feedback from customers who dined out during the event was “extremely good.”

So Longmont Restaurant Week is back, for 10 days starting March 29, with added restaurants, an additional price point for more explorative diners, childcare options, a fundraiser, a food truck battle and a kick-off party at Oskar Blues. It’s a definitively Longmont spin on restaurant week, which co-organizer Leah Winkler says is by design.

“I think Longmont Restaurant Week is a little unique. I like to think of it as the most inclusive of all the restaurant weeks we looked at,” she says.

That includes First Bite Boulder and Denver Restaurant Week, where the focus isn’t as much on the community of diners, but on highlighting the food. There’s nothing wrong with that, Winkler says, it’s just not the best model for Longmont.

“What we’ve come across doing our research is that I

One way the organizers are helping get people to these restaurants is by offering childcare at Family Village for up to three hours on one of three “date nights.” But Longmont Restaurant Week isn’t just about flexibility for consumers; there was momentum from local food business owners to create an opportunity for themselves outside of the other restaurant weeks in the region.

“The biggest distinction why we wouldn’t plug in [to First Bite or Denver Restaurant Week] is they require a prix fixe, three-course menu,” Stallard says. “That doesn’t fit every restaurant in Longmont. The goal of Longmont Restaurant Week is to show how far Longmont has come. If you haven’t visited Longmont in the last six months — or six years — it looks completely different.”

ing flexibility to Longmont food businesses this year. That’s why they added a second price point, $28.71, to accommodate restaurants eager to show off multi-course, or higher-end dining. La Momo Maes Bakery, on the other hand, doesn’t have a way to make the regular price point of $18.71 feel like a bargain, so they’re offering coffee or a cupcake for $1.87, Winkler says. Still other establishments are offering familysized and combo meals.

Stallard says Longmont Restaurant Week has about the same proportion of

participating businesses (out of the total number of local food establishments) as Denver Restaurant Week.

The $18.71 (and other) prices don’t include tip, mind you, and Stallard asks that if you do explore Longmont’s restaurants, breweries, bakeries and everything else, that you “pay it forward and treat the staff well, because they’re hustling for these 10 days.”

Dispatches from the 2019 Collaboration Beer Festival

raft beer is certainly headed into some rather odd territory.

At least that was one of the takeaways from last week’s Collaboration Beer Festival, the sixth-annual beer fest hosted by Two Parts (a craft beer event and marketing group) and the Colorado Brewers Guild. Established in 2014, CollabFest brings brewers together in the spirit of camaraderie and craft community to create something off the beaten path.

And off the beaten path these brewers walked in droves. Black Bottle Brewery and Accomplice Beer Company teamed up to make a Blueberry Protein Milkshake IPA, and it didn’t taste nearly as bad as the name might suggest. As the brewer explained, they used a vegan protein powder, which might account for the beer’s round and full mouthfeel without an unwanted chalky texture. It was kind of like a blueberry pancake that wasn’t cooked all the way through.

Jagged Mountain Craft Brewery, 105 West Brewing Company and Little Man Ice Cream whipped up a Rum Barrel-Aged Imperial Ice Cream Old Ale by using 30 gallons of chocolate cherry fudge ice cream and aged the concoction in Colombian rum barrels.

Surprisingly, the beer drank easily — sweet and creamy with a hint of malt still making its presence known. Not so much with New Image Brewing and Molly’s Spirits’ Pistachio Ice Cream Stout; theirs wasn’t made with ice cream but had a flavor reminiscent of the sweet treat. It was also one of the stickiest beers at the fest, almost as if the brew was laced with chocolate syrup.

And these were just the beginning: Dessert Berliner Weisse with Yogurt, Mango Coconut Gose, Orange Cream Stout, Margarita Imperial Gose, at least two different Piña Colada Milkshake IPAs, a Cinnamon Roll Brown, an Avocado Beer and more juicy/hazy IPAs than you can shake a stick at. Walking around the Hyatt ballroom was like playing spectator to craft beer’s research and development department, and sugar was the star of the show.

No beer exemplified that better than Periodic Brewing, Mother Trucker Brewing and Donavon Brewing’s Kapn Crunch IPA, an Imperial Milkshake IPA brewed with pale malt, brown sugar, wheat, oats and Huell Melon, Southern Passion and El Dorado hops; fermented with a British ale yeast; and dry-hopped with Cap’n Crunch cereal. As an added kick, the brewers floated a few puffs of the Cap’n in each glass to those craving an extra shot of nostalgia.

Kapn Crunch IPA isn’t the first beer on the market to utilize breakfast cereal in the brewing process — though the trend is still rather new — but Periodic, Mother Trucker and Donavon’s commitment to the ethos of the beer comes through even down to the toppings. It’s not a beverage you’re likely to knock back with great frequency, but it is tasty in a confounding sort of way.

The beer market is certainly getting sweeter, but so are American palates. And if the plethora of sugary beers poured at 2019’s CollabFest is any indication, this is probably just the beginning.

But if any of these dudes saw my Tinder matches, they’d be like, “This woman has a thing for Asian guys.” Which I do, but it’s pretty new. Is this normal? Do people just change preferences like that? Cannabis use drops among Colorado teens

eenagers are our go-to demographic whenever we want to make something scary or edgy sounding, which is exactly why we rely on them to tell us what’s cool. However, a new study suggests modern teens are lame as hell. When opponents argue against the legalization of canna-

bis, they always mention how it’s a gateway drug for teens that will surely doom them to a life of harder addictions and substance abuse issues. Well, a new study reveals that those people are worried about the wrong age group.

Older Americans, not teens, are using more cannabis. In fact, the number of Colorado teens who admit to using cannabis has dropped below the national average for the first time ever. On Tuesday, state public health researchers released a report detailing the results of a youth cannabis education and prevention campaign called High Costs. The study surveyed

more than 500 teens in Denver and about 56,000 young people statewide.

According to the report, the national average of teens who admit to using cannabis is at 20 percent. In Colorado, it’s only 19 percent with four out of five Colorado youth saying that they do not use cannabis. The study also reveals that 59 percent of Colorado teens have never consumed cannabis. An additional 22 percent of teens have only consumed cannabis once or twice ever. Another 8 percent consume cannabis once a month or less. In other words, just 10 percent of Colorado teens use cannabis more than once a month. So 81 percent of Colorado teens don’t consume cannabis with any regularity, have only tried it or have never tried it at all.

The High Costs campaign, which uses tax dollars, says its ads are working: The city spent millions targeting teens on social media and other apps, with 75 percent of teens who knew about the campaign saying it did discourage them from using cannabis.

The study also found that 79 percent of teens surveyed thought their peers use cannabis, but in reality, it’s estimated to be only 19 percent.

A federal study published last month in the American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse used the results of an anonymous survey given to more than 800,000 high school students across 45 states to calculate the number of teens who smoke cannabis. It found that the number of teenage cannabis smokers was 1.1 percent less in states that had enacted medical cannabis laws compared to those that hadn’t, even when accounting for other important variables such as tobacco and alcohol policies,

economic trends, youth characteristics and state demographics.

And for the rest of the nation, the effectiveness of Denver’s youth awareness and prevention campaign sends an important message. It shows that it is entirely possible for legal states to enact measures that effectively curb underage cannabis consumption. And further, it shows that smart, well-funded programs can do way more to reduce teen cannabis consumption than prohibition and harsh criminalization.

Access and consequences are just two factors that influence a teen’s decision to use drugs or not. Most drug deterrence initiatives send the message that drugs are harmful, dangerous and taboo, which is exactly what makes them so attractive to teens. The program that I grew up with and more ’90s kids remember, D.A.R.E., was basically a sneak peek at how much fun I was going to have in college.

So when you hear people arguing that legalization increases use among children by making it easier for them to access, don’t even bother engaging. These people have officially been proven wrong since the data shows it has the opposite effect. Personally, I think it’s because kids always think whatever their parents are doing is embarrassing, which now includes smoking weed.

When cannabis is legalized, socially acceptable and safe, it loses its edge. Obviously this does not deter all interest among teenagers, but it does undercut the stigma of danger that is so attractive to the ones who are desperate to prove themselves to their peers.

So congrats, teens. Maybe sexting and sobriety are all you guys need and smoking weed out of an apple core in your parent’s basement just isn’t cool anymore.

In a latter-day miracle, Israel’s election outcome may hinge on pot

ack in December, when Israel declared that it would hold a national election (scheduled for April 9), a political party named Zehut was so far out in right field that no one took it seriously.

Early polls didn’t even bother including the party’s name among the parties they asked voters about.

WIKIMEDIA COMMONS Then party leader Moshe Feiglin, a former member of Benjamin Netanyahu’s governing Likud Party who went rogue, started campaigning on marijuana legalization.

And boy are they taking him seriously now.

Some background: Israelis don’t vote for individual candidates for the country’s 120 member parliament, the Knesset. They vote for a party.

Each party competing in the election puts up a list of candidates. Voters cast their ballots for a single party’s list out of all the competing lists (there can be a dozen or more). Seats are distributed among the political parties on the basis of strict proportional representation; if a party gets 25 percent of the vote, it will get 30 seats, which will go to the first 30 candidates on its list. In order to qualify for any seats, a party has to get a minimum of 3.25 percent of the vote.

Before Feiglin started talking about marijuana last month, no one thought Zehut could meet the 3.25 percent threshold to qualify for a single seat.

The most recent polls show it winning four or five seats.

And that is a much bigger deal than the numbers suggest. That’s because this year’s election is shaping up as a glove-tight contest between conservative and leftist party blocs for enough seats to form a governing coalition. And a lot of Israeli politicos are now saying Feiglin and Zehut will hold the swing votes.

So suddenly every major politician in Israel is talking about pot.

Netanyahu has announced that he’s “studying” legalization, and will have an announcement soon. (The study seems to consist of polling on how Israelis feel about legalization.)

Finance minister Moshe Kaholon says pot-related offenses should be expunged from people’s records.

The center-left Blue and White Party, which until recently was the favorite to best Netanyahu’s Likud and lead the next government, refused to rule out legalization.

Feiglin, for his part, says he won’t commit to supporting either Netanyahu or Blue and White leader Benny Gantz, saying that although he’s never used marijuana he will only join a coalition that will legalize pot.

Hebrew) is not a one-issue party and Feiglin is most certainly not a one-issue candidate. The party is robustly libertarian on social and domestic issues and ferociously nationalistic and hawkish on security and foreign policy.

Prior to the election Feiglin wrote a 300-page manifesto that’s currently a best-seller in Israeli bookstores. Domestically, in addition to marijuana legalization, he wants to dramatically reduce the size of Israel’s government and increase competition is most areas, including allowing greater school choice with a voucher system and cutting back the role of the Rabbinate in a number of areas that Western countries consider secular.

“I am emphatically opposed to any coercion, certainly to religious coercion,” one Zehut billboard reads, adding “I want you to be who you are.”

Then there’s the party’s national security and foreign policy agenda, which includes canceling the Oslo Accords with the Palestinians, annexing the entire West Bank, and building a synagogue on the Temple Mount.

Feiglin acknowledges that marijuana legalization is a “colorful” issue but adds that for him it represents the broader concept of reducing government intervention in people’s lives.

The Jerusalem Post asked some 30-somethings why they are supporting Feiglin and Zehut, and their answers suggested that the marijuana issue connects them with the boarder libertarian themes.

One, who gave his name as David, a father working in the tech sector, put it this way: “For me, personally, it’s no secret that I enjoy smoking a little pot here and there, and it would be nice to do it and not be a criminal,” he said. “It should just be another thing available for medical and recreational use, and politicians should get their noses out of it. If they want a tax cut of the profits, they should get that, because they always do. But I don’t want to be told how to live my life.”
