reat news, people. As a recent headline puts it: “Household wealth back at pre-recession levels.” Oh joy — we’re all rich

again!

Or not. The article attributes the gain in household wealth to “surging stock prices.” But before you start ripping up your floorboards in hopes of finding your household’s share of this bounty, note

an environmental organization, Xcel got a pass from the legislature on being required to update its controls to best available technology.

Mercury is also emitted along with natural gas in leaking wells, the connection with meth being that both mercury and natural gas are soporifics.

Would taking over the Xcel plant create a huge liability for the city, paying the lifetime rehab bills for

Meanwhile, those financially stretched Americans who’re struggling to find a job are literally being toyed with by the corporate powers. Today’s massive backlog of unemployed and underemployed workers allows corporations to bring in hoards of top-quality applicants for one job. They force these seekers to return five, seven or more times for senseless rounds of interviews — then the company whimsically decides not to fill the opening at all.

From Google to Starbucks, major corporations have roughly doubled the duration of their interview processes in the last two years. The New York Times tells of one fellow who applied for a video-editing job. He was run through a gauntlet of nine interviews and made to undergo psychological and personality exams, plus a math quiz and a spelling

test — after which, the company simply closed the opening.

The job-dangling corporation, on the other hand, can simply force existing employees to shoulder a heavier load, while it trifles with applicants. In CorporateSpeak, this run-around is laughingly called looking for “the purple squirrel” — setting absurd job standards that no one in existence can meet.

Even a dog knows the difference between being tripped over and kicked.

The way workaday Americans are being kicked around today is revolting, both in the sense of being abhorrent — and inducing a revolt.

Have we accidentally prevented another ice age?

ometimes you learn the darnedest things if you read a news story all the way to the end.

Take the story in the March 16 issue of New Scientist, the British science weekly. The story is headlined, “New climate record shows pace of today’s warming.”

The story is about a study done by a research team at Oregon State University’s College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences led by Dr. Shaun A. Marcott. Marcott’s team did a study of global temperatures over the ll,300 years since the end of the last ice age, aka the Holocene epoch.

(Since records of measured temperatures go back only to about 1860, Marcott’s team used “proxies” to determine temperatures for the years before that. Proxies include tree rings, which are thicker during warm years when trees can grow faster. Tree ring data can provide a pretty good temperature reconstruction for the last 2,000 years.

For the years prior to that, Marcott’s team looked at shells from marine organisms that had been preserved in sediments. The ratios of isotopes in the shells vary with the temperature at the time they were created.)

Remember the fabled (or infamous, depending on your perspective) “Hockey Stick Graph” that showed global temperatures spiking in the 20th century?

What Marcott’s study did in effect was extend the hockey stick’s handle from about 2,000 years to 11,300 years.

What Marcott’s team reported was that the world has been warming faster since the late 19th century than during any time during the previous 11,300 years. No surprises there. It also concluded that average global temperatures for the last 10 years still haven’t exceeded the peak temperatures reached during the Holocene but are nonetheless “warmer than during approximately 75% of the Holocene temperature history,” and will probably exceed the highest readings and the range of natural variation by the end of the century.

Again, not particularly surprising.

What was surprising, at least to me, was this: It turns out that the warmest tem8 March 21, 2013

peratures in the Holocene occurred during the first half of it. During the early Holocene temperatures rose quickly (i.e. over the first 1,000 years) to a level somewhat above the average temperature for the whole period — and stayed there for the next 5,000 years or so.

Those temperatures were slightly higher than today’s.

Then, about 5,000 years ago, a cooling trend set in — resulting in the lowest average temperatures of the Holocene epoch during the “‘Little Ice Age’, about 200 years ago,” according to Marcott’s paper. (NASA defines the Little Ice Age as beginning in 1550 and lasting until 1850. Some climatologists think it started as early as 1350. It saw glaciation increase, ice on Lake Superior in July, rivers freeze in Northern Europe, and recurrent crop failures throughout the world. New York Harbor froze solid enough in the winter of 1780 for people to walk from Manhattan to Staten Island.)

Then, beginning in the late 19th century, temperatures spiked from the Holocene’s near-low to today’s nearhigh.

Like most (but not all) climatologists, Marcott ascribes the spike to human-caused increases in CO2.

But what caused the long cooling that preceded the quick warming?

That’s where the juicy details in the final paragraphs of the New Scientist story come in.

The gradual downward drift of global temperatures before the 19th century was driven by changes in the Earth’s axis of rotation, Marcott told the magazine. The planet’s tilt increased early in the Holocene, before decreasing again. “It sort of wobbles,” he said. A greater tilt leads to more sunlight at the poles in the summer, and this keeps the Earth warmer.

And then there’s this second-fromlast paragraph from the article: “If humans had not begun warming the planet by releasing greenhouse gases, Earth would eventually return to an ice age. ‘If we were following the orbital trend we’d still be cooling,’ see ICE AGE Page 11

work has graced many calendars. Her folk hero status and her romantic, weathered, mythic life has elevated her to the pantheon of art legends.

But, sadly, her paintings are nothing more than crowd-pleasing calendar art.

Pretty pictures and a mythic life does not an important artist make.

Elizabeth Miller writes of O’Keeffe’s line, form and color. This is the same line, form and color employed by other painters of her generation, such as Hartley, Dove and Benton. These are painters that we hear very little about today.

Carolyn Kastner, curator of the O’Keeffe show at the Denver Art Museum, states that O’Keeffe’s brushwork in the ’30s was “what the abstract expressionists were doing in the ’40s and ’50s.”

To say that O’Keeffe’s work was expressionistic and a progenitor to abstract expressionism is absurd. Her work is quite timid and conventional. There is nary a bold brush stroke in any of her paintings. The swirly lines and form evoke nothing more imaginative than the ornamental curlicues of decorative art. And color? There is nothing akin to anything expressionistic in O’Keeffe’s use of color.

Abstract Expressionists such as Pollack, DeKooning and Frankenthaler were bold and monumental in their application of paint.

O’Keeffe reduces the boldness and monumentalism of the New Mexican landscape into something small and “pretty.” To say that O’Keeffe was a

progenitor of Abstract Expressionism is like saying a tract house is the progenitor to the architecture of the Denver Art Museum. To see a true progenitor of the 1940s and 1950s we have to go back 50 years before the beginning of O’Keeffe’s New Mexico work to her predecessor at DAM, Van Gogh.

As for the Kachina paintings, they are nothing more than straightforward, pedestrian still lifes with none of the power the original figures evoke.

Thankfully, the curators included these Hopi treasures beside the paintings so that we can see how O’Keeffe’s mere descriptions pale in the powerful presence of the actual Kachinas.

The O’Keeffe show at the Denver Art Museum and the Boulder Weekly review are examples of how we, as an art-viewing public, elevate the popular culture reputation of an artist far beyond the mediocrity of their work.

It is also an example of how we confuse calendar art for actual art.

WHY THE SUDDEN CRISIS OF CONSCIENCE? It was almost amusing to see Boulder City Council members suddenly get up tight about appointing former councilmember Crystal Gray to the city Planning Board.

Why the sudden crisis of conscience, especially about something so minor? It’s not like councilmembers seem to be that concerned about other, more serious conflicts of interest, like having the city attorney they hire and fire also being the one to police them — and more often, absolve them — regarding appearances of impropriety. Or about being required to accurately complete financial disclosure forms that might reveal their vested interests in decisions affecting downtown properties, just hypothetically speaking.

The appointment of a former city council member like Gray — as long as she doesn’t have any conflicts of interest of her own, or with sitting councilmembers — seems pretty innocuous, considering the other questionable situations that we have caught councilmembers in over the past year.

Maybe this knee-jerk reaction stems from a sense of guilt spawned by past transgressions, like failing to be completely forthcoming about one’s income and former business partners … not to name any names.

As far as we’re concerned, the appointment of a recent city councilmember to a city board probably translates into an infusion of institutional memory and knowledge that would only benefit such a group.

At any rate, we applaud the council’s sudden scrutiny of its ethics. We hope councilmembers start extending the same scrutiny to other areas of its dealings with city business.

GET OUT, GUNS BLAZING Gov. John Hickenlooper signed two gun-control bills into law March 20, requiring background checks for private gun purchases and banning ammunition magazines that hold more than 15 rounds.

That second bill was the one so strongly opposed by Magpul Industries, the Erie-based ammo maker that said it would leave the state if the bills became law.

Well, see ya.

It’s a terrible shame for Magpul’s 200 employees, but it’s an encouraging sign for any of us who want lawmakers to pass laws they believe are right and not bow to threats from corporations.

Hick deserves accolades for staring down a corporate interest and not blinking — especially since he’s keeping his eyes so firmly shut on fracking.

Of course, not all of Magpul’s 200 employees will lose their jobs. Only the actual factory workers, the ones who didn’t make the threats in the first place.

Magpul will start manufacturing outside Colorado soon, The Denver Post reported.

The thing is, when you insist on making magazines with more than 15 rounds and your corporate slogan is “Unfair Advantage,” you’re kind of trying to profit directly from the idea of firing your gun at another person. Or did you mean an unfair advantage against a deer?

Either way, it’s hard to count Magpul as a very painful loss.

Which raises some inconvenient questions: Did our carbon-loving lifestyle accidentally prevent a new ice age? Did Big Coal, Big Oil, Dick Cheney (and his six billion fellow CO2 spewers) turn around five millenia of global chilling in the space of two human lifetimes — faster than you can say “frack you, Mac,” geologically speaking.

Would a return to pre-industrial revolution levels of CO2 bring back, not some temperate idyll, but the Little Ice Age, which just might be a prelude to a big ice age? If so, do we really want to stop and reverse our collective carbonization of the atmosphere and thus get back on the toboggan of death sliding down the slippery slope of global chilling?

Under the circumstances, what’s not to like about global warming?

Among other things, droughts, desertification, stronger hurricanes and more extreme climate events, I hear you say.

Well, yes, but when it comes to extreme climate events, it’s hard to beat 3,000 feet of ice in your yard.

Droughts and deserts? You can get them in cold venues as well as warm ones. For instance, average annual precipitation for Antarctica is about 6.5 inches a year, and for about half the continent it is 4 inches or less. Areas that receive less than 10 inches of precipitation a year are classified as deserts.

Temperature extremes? Granted, 120 F temperatures suck, but they’re a lot easier to take than minus 75 F temperatures, which helps explain why there are 7.2 million people living in Baghdad and 300 people living at McMurdo station.

So which is the better future?

Mangos in Montana or polar bears in Portland?

t’s springtime in Boulder County. Birds are building nests, lawns get a little greener with each passing day and, like the swallows to Capistrano, the talk of how to stop genetically modified organisms (GMOs) from being planted on county open space lands has returned.

This year, the discussion of GMOs comes with a twist in the form of a question. If it’s possible for county government to stop allowing GMO crops to be grown on open space, and by doing so, also generate millions of additional dollars into the Boulder County economy in the form of environmentally friendly economic development, does county government have a fiduciary duty to county residents to make that happen as quickly as possible?

It’s a good question, considering that just such a scenario is not only possible, but apparently, quite practical to implement as well, raising another question: Why has the county not been doing more to make it happen? These questions have come to light from a study that apparently didn’t go anywhere, a study actually commissioned by Boulder County less than five years ago that appears to have gotten lost in the shuffle of the great GMO debate. **** ack in 2009, Boulder County government seemed like a pretty forward-looking entity. At least that’s the impression food system analyst Ken Meter got when the county hired him to study the potential for the citizens of Boulder County to become a self-determined community.

Meter, who is president of the Crossroads Resource Center in Minneapolis, Minn., believes that creating truly self-determined communities is a necessity if we are to continue to live well in a world that is addicted to fossil fuels and continuing to warm at an alarming rate. During a recent interview with Boulder Weekly, the analyst described the work he produced for the county approximately four years ago.

Meter’s report was titled “Boulder County Local Farm & Food Economy.” It researched a variety of data to determine facts like: what crops are grown in the county and how much it costs to grow those crops; where those crops are eventually sold; how much county residents spend on food grown from outside the county; food-related health conditions; what food issues affect low-income residents in the county, and others.

Meter’s study found that while the county’s population “has more than doubled since 1969,

news there has been only limited public planning to assure a secure and stable food supply.”

One of the principles behind becoming a selfdetermined community is that the population living in a defined area such as a county should be able to locally produce as much of its own food supply as possible.

Part of Meter’s work for the county was to analyze the potential of locally grown food as a tool for economic development, but to be fair to Meter and his work, generating increased revenue from countyowned farmland or other food production is not the ultimate goal of his efforts.

Meter says, “County land should be set aside for the production of fresh vegetables, meats and fruits to be used by the local population. It requires a county to sit down and say, ‘We have this many people to feed and this much land.’ It takes time, capital and political will to create this kind of, what I like to call community development rather than economic development. If they don’t do it, they will not have enough food as oil prices rise and transporting food from distant places becomes unrealistic. It will raise prices and make it difficult for low-income people to eat.

The time to plan the local food system is now. We have to start planning a life that is less oil-dependent if we are going to survive on this planet.”

When asked why his report, which was, after all, commissioned by the county, never seemed to get any traction, Meter says the answer is simple: “timing.”

“The Food and Agriculture Policy Council was just forming in 2009, and they saw this $350 million investment that the county had made in open space as a great opportunity to create a local food system,” he says. “I came in and presented the report and they were really enthusiastic. A couple of the commissioners also seemed very receptive to the ideas. But that was right when the GMO fracas erupted. With limited resources and time, the GMO debate took over and the report just got lost, for the most part.”

This is the reason that Meter does what he does.

And creating such a locally sustainable food system is indeed a needed vision for the county. But as with all grand ideas that require long-term planning, money and political will on the part of elected local officials and staff, getting started can be very difficult and, unfortunately, often doesn’t happen in a substantive manner.

When asked about Meter’s food study, county officials who still remember that it exists claim that the research is a part of the county’s long-term planning, but that it will take many years to move in that direction.

“We are having the conversation, but I know the public likes things to happen faster,” says county Agricultural Resources Manager David Bell. **** ut there is still hope for Meter’s research to affect Boulder County open space lands and agriculture in the near future, even if it is in a more limited manner than the analyst would desire.

There is a hidden gem in Meter’s analysis that provides a model that can, and many believe should, be immediately acted upon by the county, particularly

when it comes to the commissioners’ annual decision to continue to allow GMO crops with Monsanto’s patented traits to be grown on county open space, despite the opposition of the majority of county residents.

In Meter’s study, under the heading “Balance of Cash Receipts and Production Costs,” Meter found that “Boulder County ranchers and farmers sell $54 million of commodities per year (1994-2006 average), spending $64 million to raise them, for an average loss of $10 million each year.”

The study also found that “the farm sector as a whole has not earned a positive cash flow from raising commodities (though clearly some individual farms have made money) since 1994 … Farmers spent $15 million more producing crops and livestock in 2006 than they earned from sales of those products.”

It is a shocking finding. Commodity crops, which are nearly entirely GMO crops, being grown on Boulder County farms, including open space lands, are losing on average $10 million a year for the people growing them, and this calculation is made after taking into account all farm subsidies.

This means that less revenue is being generated and spent within the county than would be if the crops being grown were profitable.

The next part of Meter’s report that should weigh upon the commisioners’ decision to continue to allow GMO commodity crops on open space lands comes under the heading “The County’s Consumers.”

This section states, “Boulder county consumers spend $662 million buying food each year, including $374 million for home use. Most of this food is produced outside the county. Only $715,000 of food products (2 percent of farm cash receipts, and 0.1 percent of local consumer needs) are sold by farmers directly to consumers.

“The estimated change in net assets for all county households was a combined loss of $361 million in 2006 alone. This places additional pressure on Boulder County residents as they pay for food.”

What all this means is that farmers are losing $10 million a year by growing mostly GMO commodity crops, while spending, according to the study, another “$23 million buying inputs from external suppliers, for a total outflow of $33 million from the county economy.”

At the same time, Boulder County residents spend more than $600 million a year to buy food from outside the county, for a combined total loss to the county economy of more than $630 million a year, due to our current non-local food system.

As Meter points out, “this loss amounts to nearly 13 times the value of all commodities raised in the county.”

It is a staggering number that could be lowered almost immediately if the county were to take certain practical actions. And there is no time like the present, when you consider that if Boulder County residents were to buy just 9 percent of the food that they eat at home directly from farmers and ranchers living within the county, it would produce an economic windfall to the county of an additional $34 million of new farm income, an amount equal to the entire

annual farm sales in the county.

By buying locally grown food, the $34 million would get spread around to county businesses, and would then translate into more jobs, and therefore even more disposable income in the area. This is the economic multiplier effect that can only occur as long as each stage of the food system is kept within the county. Once a mill or a company operating and/or paying most of its taxes outside the county becomes involved in the chain, the multiplier effect is diminished or extinguished: no new local jobs, no new local taxes generated, and so on.

To maximize food as a tool for economic development, it has to be grown, processed, sold and consumed within the county.

The truth is, the county can get started on this robust local food and economic development model far more quickly and easily than citizens have been led to believe. The pieces have been in place for some time now.

Boulder County is one of the nation’s epicenters for organic food manufacturing. As many as 350 companies within the county are involved with organic food on some level. Some are large manufacturers, others are farmers of varying size and still others are small food processors. Together, these companies could easily use much or all of the non-GMO food that could be grown on county open space lands.

As a first step toward Meter’s vision of a self-determined community, some companies within the organic food industry have expressed their interest to the county in purchasing non-GMO crops.

So what’s the hold-up? It depends on who you ask. **** Mary VonBreck of ReKindle Consulting, who served as the campaign manager for GMO Free Boulder when the county commissioners were weighing whether to allow GMOs on county open space in 2011, says the Meter study and the model it suggests for Boulder County reflect the same conclusion that United Nations studies on world hunger have reached.

“The only way we can feed the world is to feed ourselves,” VonBreck says. “Whether it’s a village in Africa or a county like Boulder, we need to begin looking at how we take care of our own.”

Environmental and food sustainability issues aside, she agrees that moving toward Meter’s model is a no-brainer from a strictly economic standpoint.

“We’re very prosperous here, and yet we’ve come up with a model that loses $10 million a year,” VonBreck says. “That, to me, was astounding. In the business community, you just can’t run a company that way.”

She adds that the county’s open space was purchased with taxpayer money, and county officials have a duty to manage it responsibly.

“Why would you ask taxpayers to continue to give money to something that’s losing money, and then ask them to subsidize those same farmers?” VonBreck asks. “The whole point is to preserve open space, but we should be preserving it in a way that doesn’t lose See LOCAL FOOD Page 14

[money]. If you’re going to ask the taxpayer to fund the purchase of open space, we have to manage it in a way that doesn’t leave our next generation with a huge problem.

“Who wants to operate at a $10 million-a-year loss?” she adds. “Well, sign me up. Where can I get that job?”

VonBreck says the concept of keeping more of the county’s agricultural products bought and sold in-house prompted her to redouble efforts to connect local organic companies with farmers and county staff. Late last summer, she says, she helped organize a meeting attended by county staffer Bell, County Commissioner Deb Gardner, local wheat farmer Keith Bateman and Doug Radi of Rudi’s Organic Bakery, among others.

According to VonBreck, Rudi’s was interested in buying more organic wheat locally, but that would require some existing conventional farmers like Bateman to convert to organic. (Bateman could not be reached by press time.)

One outcome of the meeting, VonBreck says, is that Bell agreed to identify a consultant to help calculate details about the costs and logistics needed to transition farmers to organic wheat.

“I don’t think that ever happened,” she says. “I don’t think he ever did his job from the meeting. And that was disappointing.

“So my question is, if all of this is being offered, if the companies are sitting at the table saying, figure out what it would cost you, let’s start talking about making a deal, why the continual refusal?” VonBreck asks. “It’s what the citizens want, it’s what the businesses want, and yet somehow these farmers have the right to handcuff the entire county on their food.”

Bell, on the other hand, says he doesn’t recall the ball being left in his court for follow-up.

“I don’t remember that being one of the outcomes of that meeting,” he told BW. “I don’t remember that being a request.”

He adds that open space staff are continuing the discussions with Rudi’s, and that reports of the county dragging

its feet on the matter are inaccurate.

As for the Meter report, Bell says he plans to meet with the county staffer who commissioned that study this week to learn more about it, since it was produced before he joined the open space department.

But he questioned some of the numbers that Meter used in the study, and he says he struggles with the concept that exporting the county’s agricultural products is generating a loss.

“For me, it’s pretty confusing to

protein levels in organic wheat that Rudi’s can accept. (Bread can’t be made from wheat if protein levels are too low.) There are other questions, he says. Is there enough water available on a given parcel? Will the buyer commit to buying all of the harvest, or will the farmer be stuck storing some, or sent scrambling to find other buyers?

“You can only sell so many tomatoes at the farmers’ market,” Bell explains.

He says another concern among farmers is having a single buyer when it comes to organic, since there are fewer buyers than with conventional farming and fewer options if something falls through.

Bell adds that the county would have to identify at least three crops that will be organic and locally sold, since farmers rotate crops on a single parcel from year to year for soil health and other reasons — and you can’t mix conventional crops with organic ones or certification is lost.

(The three-year transition to organic would have to be restarted as soon as conventional crops tainted an organic parcel.)

He says he would have no problem moving to such a model, if all of those questions were answered, and both the farmers and companies were satisfied.

But he stopped short of saying he would recommend such an approach to the county commissioners, citing the realities of the business model.

When asked whether the county could force existing conventional farmers using public open space to convert to organic, he replied, “At this point, that’s not a tool in our toolbox that the commissioners have given us yet. …

It’s not that simple.”

“Could the commissioners say that?” Bell asks. “Yes. Would staff respond and do it? Yes.” If the county commissioners did approve such a policy, Bell says, some of the current conventional farmers might not go along with the change and relocate to another county, so the open space would have to be ready with an organic farmer ready to take over to ensure that the land isn’t lost to noxious weeds.

Plus, he says, there are many challenges and details that must be addressed before being able to make significant progress toward the model suggested by Meter’s study.

He lists three key areas where there are unanswered questions about what the organic companies would need from farmers: cost, quantity and quality. The first, he says, might be one of the biggest possible stumbling blocks, because conventional farmers aren’t going to want to switch to organic or sell locally if it hurts their bottom line.

“If we buy all your ad space for a dime a day, that doesn’t really work for you,” Bell says.

By the same token, the companies may be reluctant to pay more than they currently pay for crops. He says he and the farmers are still waiting for the companies to provide more details about what they’d be willing to pay for the products in question.

The same goes for quantity and quality. According to Bell, he and the farmers are still waiting for specifics on the amount of crop needed and the quality required, like the minimum

news “If we say ‘You have to,’ and our large-farm guys say, ‘You know what, we’ll go to Weld County,” do we have people ready to step in?” he asks.

And the success rate for organic farms is not as high as it is for conventional; Bell ticks off examples of organic farmers who have tried and failed on open space lands.

In addition, he says, requiring a farmer to sell something locally may not be a sound business practice. Bell used the example of how different parts of a cow are sold in different locations because markets vary — for example, a farmer would rather get $7 per pound for cow tongue in Asia than $1 per pound locally. The concept of forcing farmers on county open space to go organic feels a bit heavy-handed, he says, and raises questions about the extent to which government should be imposing its will on the private sector.

The county already gives preference to organic farms when leases are renewed, Bell notes, and helps fund infrastructure improvements on county-owned farm land.

“You’re talking about bringing in the stick, I’m talking about bringing in carrots and sticks,” he says.

Bell also points to already existing loops in which crops grown in Boulder County are sold to a local company and returned to the community, like the farmer who raises corn on open space for cows at nearby Mile Hi Dairy, which provides milk to Royal Crest Dairy in Longmont. In turn, Mile Hi provides the farmer with manure from the cows to fertilize for the next round of corn.

Bell acknowledges that the funding for his position and department rely in large part on having a steady revenue stream coming from the farmers leasing county open space, and he admits that he has relationships with the farmers currently using county open space, but he denies feeling beholden to them.

“Is it my job to keep them happy?” he asks. “No, but we want to help them stay in business.”

Second of all, it’s a complex thing to pull together. It’s a doable solution, but it’s going to take some work.”

Radi says it’s going to take a group effort with all parties involved to make

it a reality, to create the missing connections between the agricultural community and the organic industry. It can’t be done piecemeal.

“This idea of organic open space has to be about scale,” he says. “It can’t be about me going and carving out 20 acres of somebody’s corner plot and turning it into organic. This needs to

be a broad-based solution that the county decides, philosophically, that we want to be known for organic and agricultural responsibility, and not putting chemicals into our groundwater, our land. We want to do it the right way.

And for that to happen, it may require some prodding from the county commissioners. “Philosophically, everybody nods their head, but when it’s time to do the hard work, everybody’s sort of like, ‘Hey, I’ve got my own set of issues,’” Radi says. “And that’s where you need the county. We need a mandate.”

When asked whether the commissioners need to step up and provide that mandate, Radi replied, “I think that’s got to be part of it. At some point in time, we need to make the decision, and that decision probably needs to be written into policy.”

When asked about the details that Bell says he and the farmers are not getting from the organic companies, Radi says both sides need to sit down and work the numbers, but when it comes to quantity, “you couldn’t grow enough wheat for me. We’re buying millions of pounds a week, off of thousands and thousands of acres.”

“I think all the pieces are there,” he continues. “What we haven’t done is decide that we’re going to be in a room together working on a macro solution, and that, to me, is the most critical next step. The devil’s in the details, and everybody’s nervous about the details.”

Similarly, Sonja Tuitele, director of communications for Aurora Organic Dairy, says that if there were more organic alfalfa or corn silage being grown on county open space, “we would buy it all.”

Tuitele says the dairy can only buy organic feed for its cows, but the company would work with farmers during the transition, like giving them organic compost and helping with paperwork.

She says Aurora board member Mark Retzloff of Alfalfa’s has been involved in past discussions with Bell about the transition to locally purchased organic crops on county open space.

While Tuitele was hesitant to provide details about how much each of

their 8,000 milking cows eats and the cost of feed, she says the company would be eager to work with Bell to provide the details he needs for the farmers.

“If David Bell wants to reach out, we’d be happy to provide him with more information,” she says. “If there were more local organic feed sources, we would definitely be interested.”

**** ormer County Commissioner Will Toor says that while he doesn’t recall the Meter report, he has seen similar studies recommending the same approach: moving toward a more selfsustaining food system, for various reason, including economic.

“Everybody’s supportive of moving in that direction, but there are a number of challenges,” he says, citing water availability, soil composition and competition with existing farmers. “So I just think there’s some real complexity there.”

But when asked about the general goal of increasing organic production and keeping more of it local, Toor says there is consensus, as evidenced by the county’s new cropland policy, which contains a goal of making 20 percent of the county’s cropland organic.

“Conceptually, folks are on board with that,” he says. “Everybody’s pretty much on board with growing more food locally. … It would have real economic value.”

But Toor stopped short of recommending the passage of an immediate mandate, saying it would damage existing farmers.

“I don’t think you can say, starting tomorrow, the only thing you can grow is organic, and sold locally,” he says.

New County Commissioner Elise Jones, who replaced Toor in January, agrees with the overall goal as well, saying that many studies have outlined the economic and other benefits of consuming locally grown food. She notes that a Transition Colorado study found that a 25 percent food shift

news toward local eating could generate 1,900 new jobs.

Like Toor, she says an immediate mandate that the county shift open space to organic farming and local use could be “a brick wall that’s not going to be helpful to anybody.”

But she insists that despite challenges like water availability, all three county commissioners have made it a top priority — probably more than any past board — and agree that “this is what we want to do. We’re trying to push the envelope and encourage county staff to do this as fast as we can.”

However, Jones adds, the county needs to be realistic.

“It is going to take some time,” she says. **** ut some question why it is unrealistic for the county to quickly find a farmer willing to grow what local buyers have already agreed to purchase, thereby moving at least some current GMO commodity crops being grown on open space to nonGMO crops. Has the county made this a priority and found this matchmaking to be impossible? Has the county put out call after call for farmers willing to produce what buyers have already said they would purchase, only to get no response? Has the county been holding weekly, monthly, annual meetings to find a way to generate millions of additional dollars for the local economy by getting someone to grow what local organic companies want to buy? Has the county been holding regular meetings for the entire organic industry in Boulder County to find out exactly how much and what food the industry would be willing and able to buy locally? The answer to these questions appears to be no, and until that changes, progress will be as county officials claim — very slow to non-existent.

Unfortunately, it appears that unless someone steps forward to take on a leadership role in building a local food system, a system capable of creating an economic boom for the county’s economy, next year will most likely look like last year, and the year before that, and so on. Some say this is what being “realistic” means when it comes to expectations of our local bureaucracies. One would suspect that a business given the same opportunity as the county, to generate millions of additional dollars by shifting what it makes to fit the needs of large local buyers, would find it substantially less time-consuming to adjust its business

practices.

Despite Rudi’s commitment to buy all the wheat we can grow on our public lands, and Aurora Organic Dairy saying it would take all the organic alfalfa and corn silage that county open space could produce — legitimate offers that would deliver millions of dollars in new additional revenue into the county’s economy — it appears that moving towards a sustainable food system has to date not been a high enough priority to get all the players to the table to get it done.

And so it is that the twist to this spring’s GMO debate, the question regarding county government’s continued support for growing GMO crops on public lands, will continue to be asked. Is it the county government’s fiduciary duty to taxpayers, the actual owners of these open space lands, to manage the open space farms in such a way that maximizes the environmental and economic value for all county residents and the overall county economy?

And if that is the case, and considering the many millions in lost local revenue that our current nonlocal food system is causing, shouldn’t it be time for our commissioners to mandate change and start holding regular meetings with all the potential buyers and sellers?

It is time to think outside the box that county government has locked itself into for the past decade. For instance, Boulder County has 27 craft beer brewers, and some are among the largest and most successful in the nation. Has anyone pulled those businesses together to find out if they would be willing to buy hops grown on open space lands? If not, why not?

This is the kind of leadership that this important issue is lacking. All involved seem to agree that this is a complex issue with numerous moving parts, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be accomplished in a reasonable timeframe if enough effort, resources and business acumen are applied.

With willing buyers such as Rudi’s and Aurora, the time to take that first baby step toward creating an environmentally friendly and economically superior local food system appears to be at hand.

Ken Meter agrees, and also says he feels a sense of urgency. “We currently have demand for local food,” he says.

“People want to know who is producing their food and how it has been grown. They want that connection. If we don’t meet that demand now, it could go away in the future.”

MARS ON THE MIND

NASA has announced that a recent rock sample taken from Mars indicates the planet could have once supported living micro-organisms — just as the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado announced it has crossed another milestone in building NASA’s Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution Mission (MAVEN).

The rock sample was collected by NASA’s Curiosity rover, which is charged with finding any evidence Mars could have supported life. Scientists found sulfur, nitrogen, hydrogen, phosphorus and carbon — elements that sustain life — in powder from the rock.

“A fundamental question for this mission is whether Mars could have supported a habitable environment,” Michael Meyer, lead scientist for NASA’s Mars Exploration Program, told Science Daily. “From what we know now, the answer is yes.”

The evidence was sourced from sedimentary rock, composed of mudstone and clay materials, found in an ancient stream bed near the rim of the Gale Crater. The presence of clay, which forms in water with neutral pH, is a good indicator that Mars once had water.

Fuel economy measures how much fuel is used compared to the distance traveled in a vehicle. In 2012 there was an increase of 1.4 miles per gallon for trucks and cars. The report also estimates that, between 2007 and 2012, fuel economies increased by 16 percent, while carbon dioxide emissions have decreased by 13 percent.

“Today’s report shows that we are making strides toward saving families money at the pump, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and cleaning up the air we breathe,” says Gina McCarthy, assistant administrator for the EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation.

Fuel economy is expected to continue to grow under the Obama administration’s new national clean car program standards.

The National Clean Vehicle program, established in 2010 by the EPA and the Department of Transportation, set new standards regarding greenhouse gas and fuel economy of vehicles.

The program’s standards are expected to save American families $1.7 trillion in fuel costs — a projected $8,000 per vehicle — and save 12 billion barrels of oil by 2025.

“The historic steps taken by the Obama administration to improve fuel economy and reduce our dependence on foreign oil are accelerating this progress, will spur economic growth and will create high-quality domestic jobs in cutting-edge industries across America,” McCarthy says.

Diversity among the cars available in the United States has also helped reduce CO2 emissions, according to the EPA. An increase in hybrid/diesel vehicles, plug-in electric car models and more car models with a fuel economy of 30 mpg or higher has given consumers twice as many environmentally minded choices when it comes to driving a car than they had five years ago.

don’t ski powder much anymore,” John Leonard says with a laugh. “I’m always training.”

If you haven’t heard of John Leonard, don’t worry. The talented 18-year-old athlete hasn’t exploded onto the action sports scene, yet. But with a recent invitation to compete at the Junior World Championships in Valmalenco, Italy, under the watchful eyes of U.S. national team coaches, it probably won’t be long until he’s making headlines and competing in events like the Winter X games and Olympics. Add Leonard’s all-American good looks and humble, self-deprecating manner into the mix and you have the kind of individual sponsors find irresistible. It is this onetwo punch of ability and personality that means that Leonard won’t be flying under the radar for much longer.

Like most kids in Colorado, Leonard started skiing with his family.

“My parents brought us to the mountain and put us in a program,” he says of his early on-snow experiences. A natural athlete (Leonard also runs crosscountry for Fairview High School), it didn’t take long for Leonard to master the basics of sliding down snow-covered mountains and start to gravitate toward competition.

“We started driving up to Vail when we were 6 or 7,” Leonard recalls. “And my brother and I decided that we wanted to take our skiing to the next level, so we joined the mogul team, and I did that for a few years.”

While mogul skiing, with its emphasis on quick reactions and technical ability, was enjoyable, Leonard was looking for something else.

“I’d seen freeride skiing on TV with the Winter X games and I wanted to be like those guys. It looked fun and scary,” he says of transitioning into park and pipe skiing.

At 14, Leonard was old enough to join the freeride program at Ski Club Vail, and he made the switch. In retro-

spect it may just have been the best decision he’s ever made.

Freeride skiing, ironically, was born from snowboarding. The development of terrain parks and halfpipes that at first were snowboard-only created new features that were unlike anything seen on the mountain before.

Now, of course, halfpipes are open to everyone, skier or snowboarder, and terrain parks with their man-made jumps, rails, boxes and other features are commonplace at most ski areas across North America. The work that

But Vail has invested in making itself a coveted base for athletes like Leonard. and 600 feet long,” says Leonard. “It’s really nice to have that.”

And Vail isn’t the only game in town.

Copper Mountain’s pipe is also excellent, and opens early in the season.

And then there’s the Breckenridge and Keystone terrain parks, which are world-class in their own right.

“Keystone is always the first to get their park open,” says Leonard. “It’s really good.”

With these kinds of opportunities within two hours of Boulder, Leonard quickly developed his skills, began competing and started winning.

“I started off winning local United States Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) events,” says Leonard of a career that includes a top-10 finish this year at the Aspen Open, as well as second-place spots at the Junior Olympics in both slopestyle and halfpipe. Other notable results include taking the top spot in halfpipe at the 2011 USSA Junior National Championships.

It’s these results, along with their consistency, that has punched Leonard’s ticket to the Junior World

Championships at Valmalenco March 26-31.

It’s part of a hectic end-ofthe-season blitzkrieg for Leonard that sees him competing in Sun Valley in the final stop of the Revolution Tour — a three-stop halfpipe, slopestyle and skiercross competition that acts as a stepping stone to events like the Winter X Games — before heading to Italy and then wrapping things up at Copper Mountain at the national championships April 6-9.

W“I don’t really talk about it,” says Leonard of a trip to the Olympics. “I do think about it, but there are some really good people on the U.S. national team right now. It could happen, maybe not for Sochi, though.”

For now, Leonard says he’s just focusing on having a good time.

“It’s so fun, jumping and flipping and spinning,” Leonard says of skiing slopestyle and halfpipe. “And I have some good friends who I ride with, guys like Broby Leeds and Jake Cummings. They push me, and that’s good.”

ut tech nerds, gear expos, independent film buffs and musicians of every conceivable genre into a blender and press mix, pour the resulting slurry into the one city just tolerant enough to put up with it, and you get an approximation of what it’s like to be at South By Southwest (SXSW).

The last night of the festival, I was talking with drummer phenom Gordon Koch of Boulder hardcore band Call of the Void (COTV), and he related an experience that encapsulates the frantic, unorthodox juxtaposition of genres that becomes commonplace during SXSW. The band was to play a showcase at Six Lounge, a chic club full of dark-red wooden paneling, black leather couches and a thumping, four-on-the-floor dance soundtrack. rooftop that night, quite different music from the dance party happening the two floors below. Someone watching the band scheduled before COTV hurled something into a giant, expensive LCD screen and broke it. Call of the Void almost didn’t get to play.

Across the street, on an opposing rooftop, a whole other scene with different music raged on. That sort of thing is typical at SXSW. Walk down Sixth Street, the main artery of music during the festival, and you can hear the sounds of multiple bands from multiple bars pouring onto the streets.

SXSW is not your average festival.

There are the obvious differences, of course — the film and interactive components (tech conferences, expos and the like) fill the 10-day event with more than what you’d see at Bonnaroo or Coachella. But unlike these festivals

that take place in more or less a giant field, packing tens of thousands of people in to see a show, SXSW scoops up thousands of creative and technologically minded people and spits them out into every nook and cranny of downtown Austin. (Of course, SXSW has those giant field shows as well, The Flaming Lips’ free show at Auditorium Gardens being a prime example.)

Thousands of bands from all corners of the world come to play, making it paradise for lovers of just about any genre.

One of SXSW’s best aspects is that on any given night you can see a topshelf act that usually draws thousands of fans playing next to an up-and-comer, sometimes inside the same venue.

The high-profile events require that you enter a lottery for tickets. I was able to score a wristband to the NPR Music Showcase at Stubb’s BBQ, and got to

see Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds blow the faces off of those assembled for the show. Right after Nick Cave, inside the restaurant, Waxahatchee (singer-songwriter Katie Crutchfield) played a lower-key set to a few hundred people.

Outside, hip-hop, rock, folk, pop and DJ shows were just blocks away.

Austin is famous for being the sole splotch of blue on the red canvas of Texas, but what’s most striking is the city’s collective permissiveness of everything that happens during SXSW. The festival takes over the city’s downtown.

Tens of thousands of people congest the city, and I’d imagine that conducting anything remotely resembling regular business during the 10-day festival becomes exceedingly difficult, at best.

especially for music lovers. As one local put it to me, “It seems like after SXSW, a third of you guys seem to stay.” That’s certainly borne out in the city’s population, which, according to U.S. Census data, has grown 25 percent, to more than 800,000, since 2000.

Colorado acts represented well at SXSW. I counted just four Boulder acts on the bill, but they seemed to make a big impression. West Water Outlaws, who might be the successors to Rose Hill Drive’s rock throne, thrashed the rooftop at The 512 as part of a showcase of Colorado bands put on by SpokesBUZZ Fort Collins. The stage overlooked Sixth Street, and singer/guitarist Blake Rooker kept propping a foot on the ledge and playing guitar to the masses. People had packed the rooftop seemingly to capacity by the end of the group’s second song.

The band soaked up the energy of the crowd and delivered a high-powered set. Everyone in the crowd loved it. The sound guys even told the guitarists to turn their amps up. (Up! The band was giddy at the rare occurrence.)

The band kept knocking amps down; a falling microphone stand almost fell onto my head. West Water’s brand of nouveau-Zeppelin rock crashed onto the crowd like a tidal wave, and their filthy grooves and nasty riffs never sounded better. The band played much longer than scheduled, busting out covers of Led Zeppelin’s “Communication Breakdown” and Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” to close out the set.

“The rock [scene] here is so much bigger, so much so than any other city,” drummer Andrew Oakley said after the show.

It’s a sentiment shared by other members of the band. Boulder can be a tough place for a rock band to break out, given that most smaller venues that bands need to play at the beginning of their careers are bars or coffee shops that frown upon the high volume levels desired by rock musicians. Against all odds, West Water Outlaws bucked this trend, though not without paying their dues first.

“Back in the day, Will [Buck, lead guitarist] and Blake would just walk into The Sink and ask if they could play,” bassist Vince Ellwood said.

Later that night, I walked into Maggie Mae’s Gibson Room — a room adorned with framed guitars and other rock memorabilia — to catch Gregory Alan Isakov and the most unlikely power trio I’ve ever seen. It wasn’t guitar-bass-drums but rather guitar-celloviolin, yet the three certainly electrified the audience.

South By Southwest is a giant party, mini-festivals within festivals, and most people bounce skittishly from one venue to another in a futile attempt to see everything happening at once. People often stand around, chug a Lone Star (Austin’s equivalent of Pabst Blue Ribbon) and leave for greener grass. But not at Isakov’s show. At least 50 people sat down and gave Isakov and Co. their undivided attention. A different type of energy ran through the crowd as Isakov played his pensive, low-key folk.

Now, I’m a guy used to moving around when I’m at a show. I prefer music that gets your adrenaline flowing and your heart pounding. So observing Isakov’s show made me feel like a Jane Goodall-like outsider, but I couldn’t Boulder Weekly

help but notice the spell Isakov’s music seemed to cast on everyone there, me included. There was a staff door behind the stage that kept opening during the set, allowing the noise of the more raucous scene happening on the patio to drift in, but no one seemed to pay much mind.

When Isakov’s set ended, the three musicians played an encore — the first I had seen during an official SXSW showcase. After the show, Isakov commented on how much the audience hung onto every note of his music.

“It feels like they were into it; they don’t need to say anything or scream,” Isakov said. “We’re all just sharing a moment.”

The blissful, calming effects of Isakov’s music lingered on me for awhile as I walked toward the next show on my schedule, the hard-rock band Clutch, playing in a cavernous, hangar-like venue called the 1100 Warehouse. The tattoos in the crowd had a lot more black ink and tribal barbs than the bright and colorful ones at Isakov’s show; it was a different crowd, to say the least. But it was a marvel to sit back and watch a veteran rock band blast to what must have been thousands of people after seeing Isakov’s intimate show.

The final Saturday of SXSW, enthusiasm ran high around town, but energy was low. I caught a documentary called Downloaded (about the history of Napster), and the guy who introduced it said something like, “If you’re not tired and hung over by this point, you’re not doing it right.”

Denver’s In The Whale felt this lack of energy at one point, shouting things like, “Wake the fuck up, Austin!” to the heavy-eyed crowd during their Saturday afternoon set at The Dirty Dog. Later that night, folk duo The Milk Carton Kids played a show at the Central Presbyterian Church, and Boulder Weekly

despite their tight, highly entertaining set, there were a select few in the pews who were slumped over, unable to stay awake after multiple long nights of music and booze. *** It’s hard to imagine Boulder shutting down blocks of downtown for 10 days and welcoming tens of thousands of outsiders for an event. Boulder’s cultural events tend to be of the intellectual (Conference of World Affairs) or athletic (Bolder Boulder) variety, not the party-with-your-pants-down insanity that marks so much of SXSW. Boulder County’s music scene is small enough to limit the opportunities for bands of certain genres. Hardcore, hard rock and metal bands don’t have anywhere to play. Take Call of the Void, for instance. The band has talent to spare, has been signed to a major hardcore label in Relapse Records, and boasts two Boulder-area high school grads as members, but the band hardly ever gigs in its hometown. The band, in various incarnations, has played the occasional Boulder show during the past few years, but the music has proven to be too loud and too abrasive for the People’s Republic. When the band launched its most recent tour, the opening date was not in Boulder but in Denver’s Aqualung Community Music Space.

Powered by Boulder-made Atlas speaker cabinets, the band kicked off the Relapse Records showcase in Austin, and the music was deafening and powerful. Call of the Void and label-mates played on the patio at Red 7; inside, a showcase featuring rappers Antwon and Big Freedia would soon rage on. It was the best of SXSW: chaos, loud music, and an incredible variety of music at your fingertips. I have high hopes for next year.

lenty of musicians say the live show is where their music really comes alive and songs can take on a new life, evolving into something different — and often better — than the versions fans are accustomed to hearing on a record.

Dan Deacon certainly is one artist who uses his concerts as an opportunity to explore his music. That much is obvious in the set lists he’s using from night to night as he tours behind his recently released CD, America.

“We try to do the bulk of the set as the new record,” Deacon says. “But we always like to keep one-third of the set old material, like from the previous records, and then keep one third of the set unreleased material that isn’t on any record, sort of experiment there and try out new ideas.”

That doesn’t mean fans will hear Deacon’s music as it sounds on his albums.

America, for instance, offers an adventurous and wide-ranging blend of electronic instrumentation and live percussion mixed in with traditional instruments.

The album’s compositions cover lots of ground. There’s the instrumental “Guilford Avenue Bridge,” an aggressive soundscape complete with big, dance-friendly beats. There’s “Pretty Boy,” an instrumental that pursues a more lush, melodic and relaxed sound.

“Crash Jam” (which features rather abstract choir-like singing) has a strong element of pop melody built into its hard-hitting trance-like groove. The four-part suite that closes the album, “USA,” has moments that hint at classical music, buzzing electronic dance music and an intoxicating mix of tribal rhythms that melt into robotic synthpop — all woven into a composition that’s as expansive and ever-shifting as the American landscape that helped inspire the album.

Considering Deacon has been touring in a much more minimal format —

Now based in Baltimore, Deacon showed his interest in unconventional styles in his early records.

Meetle Mice and Silly Hat vs Eagle Hat — both released in 2003 — were largely made up of instrumental sound collages.

He followed those albums with a series of records made up of sine wave compositions.

But it wasn’t until 2007 that Deacon began to gain notice in indie music circles. That’s when he released his first widely distributed album, Spiderman of the Rings. It was followed

by Bromst in 2009, a critically acclaimed CD that solidified Deacon’s status as one of indie rock’s most adventurous and creative new artists.

While America — the follow-up to Bromst — shares some common traits with Deacon’s earlier work, it takes Deacon into new territory as well, particularly with the “USA” suite. For the third part of that composition, “Rail,” Deacon employed upwards of a dozen musicians to create the orchestral elements.

The move toward using more guest musicians and traditional instruments is an avenue Deacon says he’d like to explore further.

“It’s a huge difference,” he explains.

“I’m looking forward to not just working exclusively on the computer for the next record. I think it’s going to be really nice.”

Deacon says he can definitely hear a progression in his music, as well as elements that tie his most recent albums together.

“I think if you hear all three records linearly, Spiderman of the Rings, Bromst and into America, you can hear where the ideas grew and evolved from,” he said. “But I do think they all have their own, like you said, character and quality to their sound. There are different levels of density in their approaches, especially when it comes to the percussion and the vocals.”

with his producer, Chester Endersby Gwazda, joining him on electronics and two drummers — there isn’t enough instrumentation to re-create the studio versions of the songs. But that wasn’t his goal in the first place.

The pair of drummers especially make the current shows quite different than earlier live performances.

“The drummers are Kevin O’Meara and Jeremy Hyman, two drummers that I trust very much,” Deacon says. “I love their playing style, and they’ve learned the parts in and out and now can internalize them as their own and add their own flourishes. … It adds a newness every night, whereas before, when I was playing to tracks, it was the same every single night.”

The one thing that Deacon hasn’t changed is the participatory dimension of his shows, as he strives to create an interactive vibe where fans — sometimes by the hundreds or more — join together in doing coordinated movements and dances, eliminating the traditional barrier between the artist and the concert audience.

The audience, Deacon says, is as essential to his show as the music itself.

“They’re another element of composition,” he says, noting that he has developed a trigger for the audience involvement. “If you’ve got this huge group of people to try to make situations that couldn’t arise organically, you need some sort of impetus to just start. And then [it’s about] putting that back into the audience and having them take it over from there and see how it goes and how it translates and transforms.”

The desire to evolve is something that has characterized Deacon’s work in the studio as well.

sections are solving multiple problems simultaneously. … It’s an efficiency that conducted orchestras can’t do, because if you have a problem in the viola section, you rehearse the violas and everybody else sits there quietly in down time.”

From the beginning, music of the Baroque and Classical eras has been the natural territory for Orpheus and other conductorless orchestras. These are pieces that were originally led by a playing member of the orchestra — usually the first violinist — and they are still played that way today.

But over the years Orpheus has expanded its repertoire into the era of the all-controlling maestro, playing more and more music from the Romantic era — such as the Mendelssohn and Schuman pieces on the Boulder program. While this repertoire is more challenging for a smaller, conductor-less orchestra, Orpheus seems to thrive there just as it has with Bach and Mozart.

The Schumann Piano Concerto was suggested to Orpheus by Goode some time ago. He has partnered with the orchestra for more than three decades, and the years of rehearsing, performing, recording and touring together has built a strong bond between the pianist and the orchestral players.

“This is the first time we’ve ever played this piece together,” Bauch notes, “but it was something that Richard suggested years ago. It’s a very Romantic piece, but it’s not a traditional soloistversus-the-orchestra concerto. I would say that the piano is less of an independent voice and acts more as a member of this extended chamber group, which is very fitting for Orpheus.”

Mendelssohn pairs well in Schumann — the two were friends and colleagues.

But more important for Orpheus, it was the musicians who chose what to play, who to play it with and when to play it.

CU to Colorado Shakespeare Festival: Pay for yourself

he past dozen years have been rough on the Colorado Shakespeare Festival.

The festival is a proud product of the University of Colorado Boulder and a cherished cultural gem in the city of Boulder. But according to numbers provided by the university, in only one of those years, 2000, did the festival post a profit. In all other years, expenses dwarfed revenue — by as much as $500,000 one year — leaving the College of Arts & Sciences (A&S), which provides an institutional home, resources and funding to the festival, footing the difference. The number of tickets sold in 2012 was just 40 percent of the number sold in 1994, according to numbers provided by A&S Assistant Dean for Finance and Operations Cynthia Husek.

Pre-recession, says A&S Dean Steven Leigh, it made sense for the college to subsidize the festival. Taxpayers subsidized each in-state student’s education to the tune of $6,400 a year, so covering the losses of a program like the Colorado Shakespeare Festival (CSF) that mainly served the public interest, not the university’s mission, made sense — “a conscious decision to benefit the taxpayers in your area,” Leigh says.

This year, Leigh says, the state contributed $3,200 per in-state student.

“The fact that we’re now putting tuition money [instead of state money] into it is the fundamental problem,” Leigh says. “In the previous model, the community was benefitting quite substantially ... so it’s justifiable to take tax money and put it back into the community. Now what we have to do is say, this is being driven mostly by tuition, so we have to make sure this contributes to our students.”

And in Leigh’s opinion, backed by that of Provost Russell Moore, the CSF wasn’t contributing directly enough to student education to justify that subsidy.

“Since this is an academic institution, we’re expecting Shakespeare to get back on a firm financial footing, and to contribute both materially and programmatically back to [A&S] in tangible ways,” Moore says.

But there seems to be consensus among university leaders that the CSF Boulder Weekly

shouldn’t be seen as merely a ledger item on the A&S budget. The program, after all, does provide value to the university in terms of cultural cachet and community support. After all, part of the mission of public universities is to serve the public.

But, at Moore’s insistence, the CSF must now focus on ways to engage students with the festival.

“It’s important to view it in somewhat more general terms [than just straight financial ones],” says David Boonin, associate dean for arts and humanities. “[CSF] has to show that it’s engaged with students and that there’s student benefit. In my view, at least, it doesn’t have to be the case that in every given year it’s exactly paying its way.”

While ideas aren’t yet final regarding how best to achieve that sort of benefit, the university has taken some steps and is kicking around ideas. The university is bringing in Harry Berger Jr., a professor emeritus at the University of California, Santa Cruz, to teach a class in concurrence with the festival, in which students could watch rehearsals and interview actors and producers. Leigh also throws around ideas about getting the theatre and dance, film studies, history and

English departments offering summer courses to students revolving around the CSF. And the more students enrolled in CSF-related classes, the better the festival would be at fulfilling the university’s educational mission and, more importantly, the more revenue it would generate for the festival and the College of Arts & Sciences.

No matter the shape taken by these directives mandated by the provost and dean, the days of the CSF running deficits in the hundreds of thousands of dollars appear to be over. The Daily Camera recently reported that a $985,000 bill racked up by the CSF over the last three years had been forgiven by Todd Gleeson, Leigh’s predecessor as A&S dean. CU issued a correction (the Camera said it was provided inaccurate information by CU officials), and the Camera’s updated story said Frances Draper, CU’s vice chancellor for strategic relations, believes the festival would need to make “steady progress on repaying the college for previous shortfalls.”

But according to Leigh and Moore, they are not demanding that the CSF pay back its debts. Rather, they are making clear that the CSF must start pulling its weight contributing to the university mission and right its ship financially.

“If you’re asking me, am I giving them a bill, the answer is no,” Moore says. “But it’s my expectation that they can’t lose any more money, and they have to, over time, show me tangible evidence that they are investing back in the college and back in the university. And not with words, but with material and programmatic reinvestment back in the college.”

ike a scathing satire of the Soviet Union or a mockumentary musical on grunge, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone sets its eyes on an expired target of cultural derision nobody gives a fuzzy rabbit about anymore. Dressing Steve Carrell in a Siegfried and Roy bedazzled jumpsuit only works if people know who the hell Siegfried and Roy were. Criss Angel, known for targeting gothic youth, is closing in on 50 years old now. And David Blaine has finally returned to his home planet. You need a touchstone for parody humor to work and pop culture hasn’t touched magic acts with a 10-foot wand in seemingly forever.

What we’re left with is a comedy by committee: four writers, three well-recognized leads, one director with whatever the reverse of comic timing is and not a single joke to be found. There’s a part in the film where the audience is drugged into unconsciousness and their limp bodies are moved around. To watch Burt Wonderstone is to envy the narcotic-induced coma the fictional audience got to experience.

In the first big mistake, Carrell plays the title character and Jim Carrey plays his rival, Steve Gray. When Wonderstone and his partner, Anton Marvelton (Steve Buscemi), go through a very messy split, Gray swoops in to seize a lucrative hotel gig from Doug Munny ( James Gandolfini). That’s right, they gave the rich casino magnate the last name “Munny.” Get it? Because it’s pronounced like money! And he has a lot of money! It took four writers to do this.

BOULDER WEEKLY remind him of the childlike wonder that first drove him to magic, the potential for an interesting storyline opens up.

Don’t worry, they avoid it. Had smarter people been involved, Gray would have been a stand-in for modern blockbuster films; the gorier he is, the bigger his stunts, the colder and less emotionally connective his routine becomes, the more popular he is. Meanwhile, Wonderstone could have been the oldtimey classic motion picture, full of charm and grace, reliant on a heavy dose of humanity. Instead, the climax has Carrey go cross-eyed and talk like Ace Ventura after he was hit by darts.

Hell, even casting Carrey could have worked beautifully. If they had been smart enough to flip the roles.

Wonderstone’s storyline is the former spotlight-stealing superstar cast into shadowy obscurity and forced to debase himself for a check. If you haven’t seen Mr. Popper’s Penguins, be assured this is the storyline that is now guiding Carrey’s real life. If it wasn’t evident from the amount of time this review has spent discussing the myriad of things that could have happened but didn’t, what wound up on screen ought to disappear.

Like Joan Rivers, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone is boring, tired, dressed in horrid outfits and completely unfunny.

It is a blip on Wilde’s and Carrell’s careers and another albatross placed around Carrey’s neck. This movie best magic trick is turning a packed theater into a hushed mausoleum. he fungus that caused the 19th century Irish Potato Famine wouldn’t have claimed a million lives if Ireland had been growing more than one potato variety, experts say. And today, experts warn about a similar dependence on only a handful of crop varieties.

Few trends can protect against a food-supply crisis, but farm-to-table cuisine is resurrecting crop varieties that had nearly vanished, increasing crop diversity. If the trend can be sustained, it could diversify the food supply.

“It’s the only real outlet to bring those back, the varieties that are no longer grown,” says Executive Chef Kyle Mendenhall of The Kitchen, one of the first restaurants to popularize farm-totable cuisine in Boulder.

“It creates a demand for these varieties,” says Kelly Whitaker, the chef at Basta who grows an urban garden on the building’s lawn and buys from local farms. “Farms are willing to separate a corner and grow what you want.”

Just for its Boulder chef customers, Thistle Whistle Farms on the Western Slope will grow 300 pounds of a tomato variety that, Whitaker says, is probably grown nowhere else in the country.

“About 90 percent of the stuff we source from local farms we couldn’t get from large suppliers,” Mendenhall says.

Last year, one Kitchen chef decided to incorporate a little-known vegetable into the menu. So one farmer grew “crosnes,” a tuber in the mint family.

Never heard of crosnes? They look like puffy white slugs. But many more appealing varieties of produce have been forgotten, too. Out of the thousands of apple varieties grown a century ago, only about five are grown commercially today, according to author Michael

The problem affects both plants and animals, says Eric Skokan, founder and chef at Black Cat FarmTable-Bistro.

“In terms of Big Ag, there are three breeds of commercially viable pig, one broiler chicken, and four varieties of carrot,”

Skokan says.

He raises several hundred varieties of crops and animals, including many heirloom crops and heritage animal breeds that have largely been lost.

Whitaker recalls meeting Skokan.

“He starts handing me produce,” Whitaker remembers, “and I’m like, ‘I’ve never seen that before.’”

The varieties are chosen for taste, Skokan says. They aren’t chosen for their ability to be grown in uniform rows, which matters to large-scale producers who must machine-harvest crops.

“I want perfect green beans, not perfectly uniform green beans,” Skokan says.

Boulder brewery Twisted Pine is expanding distribution to Iowa.

Twisted Pine has been brewing craft beer for Boulder since it opened in 1995 and has opened distribution across the Great Plains.

Last year, the company added three new states to its distribution base.

“The decision to go with the Johnson Brothers distribution company in Iowa was in large part due to the successful relationship Twisted Pine has enjoyed with the distributor’s Nebraska brand for the past two years,” Bob Baile, president of the brewery, says in a press release.

Twisted Pine staples Hoppy Boy IPA and Raspberry Wheat will be available alongside the brewery’s award-winning Big Shot Espresso Stout and Ghost Face Killah, the spiciest beer in the world, according to Twisted Pine.

The Go Red for Women campaign was created by women for women in 2004 and is the AHA’s national movement to stop heart disease in women. The campaign raises money for scientific research and educational programs to teach women about their risk of heart disease as well as how to prevent it.

Mimi’s offered free soup every Thursday in February to patrons who made a donation as well as displayed heart-shaped tribute cards in the restaurant for every $1 donation.

“Mimi’s is touched by the huge hearts of our guests who made a contribution during American Heart Month,” Karen Eadon, vice president of marketing for Mimi’s Café, says in a press release.

All donations went to the American Heart Association.

ALTERNATIVE REMEDIES LECTURE

operation allows him to grow varieties, like heirlooms, that are too difficult for large-scale producers.

“The small scale is allowing heirlooms to come back,” says Kitchen Chef Mendenhall.

The Kitchen sources its heirlooms from a wide network of producers, including a Paonia farmer who grows 250 tomato varieties and likes to deliver 10-pound boxes with no two tomatoes of the same variety. Mendenhall acknowledges that the inconsistency and cost wouldn’t work for many operations. But more and more restaurants are growing their own heirlooms.

“If I bought heirloom tomatoes at Whole Foods,” Boulder Café owner Dave Jablonski says, “I’d have to charge you $20 for a salad.”

So the 71-year-old grows the restaurant’s heirlooms in his home garden.

Greenbriar Inn owner Phil Goddard also says he’s glad to have the land to grow his restaurant’s heirloom varieties.

They’re expensive to source from local farms.

“We pay more,” says Mendenhall, “but we’re OK with that.”

Then again, not many restaurants can charge Kitchen prices. And at least one farmer says the farm-to-table model can be difficult to maintain.

“I don’t think a small farm delivering to one restaurant is sustainable,” 52 March 21, 2013

says Jim Hammond, who owns Hazel Dell Mushrooms, a farm featured prominently on trendy menus across Boulder.

Personal farmer-to-restaurant delivery only works for tiny mom-and-pop operations, says Hammond, who delivers through a wholesaler company.

“You need to ramp up volume for a long-term business plan,” he says.

Hazel Dell has grown as it has benefited from the farm-to-table trend, Hammond says. Restaurants make up a significant portion of the company’s sales — and the namedropping menus create new Hazel Dell customers.

“Some customers come in and say, ‘I had your mushrooms at this restaurant,’” Hammond says. “Some people come in and want only a box of Lion’s Mane,” one of his more obscure varieties.

At Black Cat, Skokan hopes more customers will be naming specific crop varieties. His farm grows 14 carrot varieties, and his menu features each by name.

“We want people to fall in love with that variety of carrot,” he says.

“They’ll put positive pressure on other farmers to grow long-lost, obscure varieties. They’ll make it commercially viable.”

I

’ve talked for long enough about the various extremes we’ve seen on our tour of Boulder County’s beer.

But pulling up to Longmont’s Left Hand Brewing, where orange cones caution drivers to slow down for pedestrians crossing the street from the additional parking to the taphouse, I couldn’t help but recall our previous stop, tiny J Wells brewery, where half our staff had to steal parking spots from the brewery’s neighbors in a Pearl Parkway industrial area.

That’s right: In the beer world, Longmont is the big time.

The beer tour launched its Longmont leg last week, heading up the Diagonal to longtime standout Left Hand. For the next two weeks East County is our home, as we hit Oskar Blues this week and the Pumphouse the next.

That little whirlwind tour could pretty well encapsulate this whole project.

You’ve got two of Boulder County’s biggest along with a self-contained brewpub that just serves its community. You’ve got Left Hand’s malt, Oskar’s hops and the ever-rotating taps of the Pumphouse.

At Left Hand, Jeff turns first to his favorite, Sawtooth, as the rest of us grab taproom-only styles.

Unfortunately, the tap list in Left Hand’s tasting room is pretty similar to what you’d see behind the glass at the liquor store. As Left Hand’s gregarious, outspoken Boulder County sales manager — who goes by Bubba Love — acknowledges, much of the company’s brewing capacity is dedicated to keeping up with demand for Milk Stout, Stranger and the other bottled products.

collection of 12 beers united by little more than Left Hand brewers’ flights of fancy — is on its third offering, an imperial version of the ginger concoction Good Juju. The Great Juju shines its spotlight squarely on the spicy root, packing a solid, flavorful ginger punch. Meanwhile, the Twin Sisters double IPA did its part to work hops into my black, malty heart.

But the show-stealer was Beer Week Sauce, hands down. Like my last visit to Left Hand, when the pro-amateur collaboration Vietnamese coffee stout was on tap, Beer Week Sauce ranks among the best — and strongest — coffee beers I’ve ever had. It’s a good sign when you wish that the product itself tasted more like the beer that’s imitating it.

The Week Sauce — named for beer weeks that happen across the country, like Colorado Craft Beer Week, happening through March 23 — joins a list of dark beers that rivals any in the county.

The Milk Stout tops that list, representing a big portion of Left Hand’s sales and routinely bringing in awards in sweet stout categories. Then there’s Wake Up Dead, the imperial Russian sister with a heavy, alcoholic body; Black Jack Porter; and Fade to Black, Left Hand’s black IPA series.

As Bubba tells us, “We’re not the biggest fans of hops.” When you do dark so damn well, we think Boulder County will forgive you. And anyway, Oskar Blues is right around the corner.
