Paul Danish expressed concern over the average teacher salary of “$87,000 dollars.” I scrolled the Internet trying to determine where he got those figures. The only ones I came up with were $49,051 for 2008-09 and $52,644 for 2009-10, with starting salaries of $20,000.

by Wendell Potter, a former PR exec for CIGNA health insurance turned whistleblower. As you might imagine, he has some fascinating insights into the corporate health industry. He says the former CEO of this company, 53-year-old H. Edward Hanway, made $28.82 million per year before retiring last year, and when he did he left with a $110.9 million compensation package. Considering that there are approximately 45 million Americans without any form of health insurance (and that according to a recent Harvard University study 45,000 Americans die every year for lack of health insurance) all those millions (from just one exec!) could certainly go a long way toward helping these folks. Frankly, I think we should be more concerned about these

It calls for fining and jailing people who “intentionally, knowingly or recklessly” hire undocumented immigrants. She then demonstrated her deep grasp of the immigration issue by explaining that Latinos are coming into our state illegally because we put “a big ol’ bowl of candy” out for them.

Yeah, madam lawmaker, those housekeeping and yard jobs (as well as chicken plucking and roofing jobs) are plenty cushy and well-paying, which is why so many of your neighbors are scrambling to grab such work for themselves.

Pious politicos should try walking in the shoes of people they denigrate before they legislate. Reality can be a useful teacher.

must say, “Bravo” for his insights and telling it like it is. However, I am going to play devil’s advocate and make the case for big business, just for a moment, so please humor me as I will come back around to what I believe are a couple of pragmatic solutions.

In the Caterpillar example, they might argue that in order to stay competitive globally, they have to lower their production costs vis-à-vis foreign factories and cheaper labor.

One could say they have a point. And quite frankly, they have a legal responsibility to maximize shareholder wealth, according to the laws governing corporations. Pure capitalism dictates that they have no duty to help America or its workforce. As Steve Martin so aptly stated in the movie, The Jerk, “Ahhh, so it’s one of those profit deals.” I mean no condescension, as I am sure Jim understands this concept better than I do, but I digress.

Our government has been subsidizing big business through tax breaks for a long time. Supply-side economics theorizes that giving companies like Caterpillar tax relief lets them take that extra money and re-invest it in things like new factories on American soil and create jobs for Americans. This creates growth for America and more Americans with money to buy Caterpillar’s products.

Also, creating a greater amount to tax so the government still gets its revenues to spend on defense, social programs etc. It’s win-win! What an incredible theory!

This trickle-down effect might actually work if the corporations kept their end of the bargain. We’ve been trying this since Reagan, and it doesn’t seem to be happening. The corporations take the tax relief, and then in order to maximize shareholder wealth, invest it overseas so they can make more money. Meanwhile, our country loses jobs, our deficits grow, contributing to more national debt and so on. Then the politicians start arguing about miniscule cuts to social programs, education and infrastructure programs.

It doesn’t take much imagination to see where we are headed. Look south to Mexico to see what happens when you squeeze out the middle class and create a country of haves and have-nots, and a government completely beholden to the haves.

Why not just stop giving corporations tax relief, since they have proven they won’t keep their tacit agreement of what to do with the relief?

How about charging extra taxes on those overseas-made goods when they come back here? With those 6 March 17, 2011

extra revenues we could perhaps fund unemployment and re-training for those workers to do something that is profitable to make in America.

We’ve tried this approach for 30 years. Can we agree it doesn’t work?

Why do they adhere to it so resolutely? Could it be because they are determined to satisfy the moneyed interest that gets them re-elected? I suspect, but don’t really know. I do know this. Right now in America, the 400 richest CEOs make more than the poorest 50 million Americans.

Two of our biggest growth industries are gated communities and prisons. I would argue that you can’t build walls high enough to protect you from millions of angry, hungry people.

Louis the XIV, Czar Alexander and the dictators of the Middle East would probably agree. In the words of Charlie Sheen’s character Bud Fox, to the immortal Gordon Gecko, “How many yachts can you water ski behind? How much is enough”?

Where will these haves be safe from the have-nots if they continue on their path of greed?

Jobs, jobs, jobs When Republican candidates were running last year, they all promised to “create jobs,” or “put Americans back to work,” or “jobs this, and jobs that,” and, of course, we can’t forget, “jobs are our first priority.” Thanks to the Citizens United decision and Koch Industries, they were successful.

Well, it seems that for the first three months of 2011, their “first priorities” have changed, as they’ve not introduced, proposed or even mentioned “jobs” legislation.

What they have done is attempt to destroy unions and voter-registration efforts, revive the “drill baby drill” chant, and to appease their extremist base by de-funding women’s health care clinics.

To paraphrase Grover Norquist, what they really want is one-partyrule and to make government small enough to fit in a woman’s uterus.

I have faith in my fellow Americans that this is certainly not what they voted for in November.

Journalistic stings go mainstream

ere’s a problem of professional ethics right out of today’s headlines: If a news organization prohibits its own staff from using certain reporting techniques — say, deception — should it publish information that somebody else gathered using those forbidden techniques?

Take the resurgence of journalistic stings engineered by free-swinging ideologues to embarrass political opponents. Stings are a kind of undercover reporting in which targets are lured into a fabricated situation intended to make them look bad.

Most recently, a major fundraiser for National Public Radio was secretly videotaped in a Georgetown restaurant by two men posing as potential contributors. The NPR official, Ron Schiller, made disparaging remarks about the tea party and acquiesced in offensive comments about Zionist influence made by the phonies, who claimed to be from some Islamic foundation. The video got picked up by established news media.

Schiller, scheduled to leave NPR for a position with the Aspen Institute, lost both jobs, and NPR boss Vivian Schiller (no relation) was forced out.

That came soon after another sting targeting Scott Walker, the Republican governor of Wisconsin. In late January, Walker took a phone call from a man falsely claiming to be David Koch, the ultra-rich Wichita, Kan., oil baron, and was secretly taped making a series of

embarrassing comments about politicking, funding and unions. Again, the story was picked up and reported extensively by established news media.

This is a boom time for stings. In January, make-believe pimps entered a dozen Planned Parenthood clinics in six states seeking medical attention, including abortions, for prostitutes, some allegedly as young as 14. The anti-abortion activists who ran this beauty released one of the videos they took, from a New Jersey clinic, and got a clerk fired, even though the clinic had promptly called the cops. Still, the sting got wide publicity and strengthened a push to deny Planned Parenthood federal funding.

Now, few of the news organizations that are dutifully reporting this rubbish would countenance such deceit themselves. The U.S. journalistic establishment frowns on undercover reporting, and stings are usually confined to cheesy exposés of sexual predation and small-bore consumer scams during TV sweeps weeks. One recent exception was the 2007 cover story in Harper’s magazine in which Washington editor Ken Silverstein claimed to be seeking high-powered PR help for a central Asian tyrant, and recounted the calisthenics K Street lobbying firms performed to audition for his money. It was a disturbing and illuminating story, but Silverstein was roundly condemned. see STINGS Page 8

The general standards, promulgated by the Society of Professional Journalists, recognize that stings are unfair and grossly violate privacy. News organizations are admonished to avoid deception unless the story is truly important and can’t be obtained honestly, and unless they are willing to come clean with their readers.

Yet now, stings are being mainstreamed — not through their wholesale adoption as a legitimate device, but in a backdoor way, when established media grant these hoaxters the news channels they are desperate for.

And that’s even worse than if news organizations were doing the stings themselves.

First, there are no quality controls — not the slightest assurance that the setup is what it’s presented as. One of the worthies behind the Planned Parenthood hit was also an author of the disgraceful 2009 videos purporting to show the anti-poverty group ACORN consorting with a makebelieve pimp and prostitutes, videos found to be fraudulent.

Second, even if they’re not frauds, where’s the evidence the findings are reasonably representative of any underlying reality? The Planned Parenthood hit team tried a dozen offices before they got somebody to say something lame. The NPR stingers apparently tried the Public Broadcasting Service

as well but couldn’t get anybody to embarrass themselves. Where’s the footage of all the people who did the right thing?

The wrongness of the stings has been completely eclipsed by the attention lavished on the marginally interesting revelations they bring. But the question remains: If stings are wrong to commit, are they any less wrong to endorse through publicity? And if established media persist in publicizing these stunts, don’t they ensure that these stings will continue and, indeed, proliferate?

What we have is a dangerous and open-ended invitation to fraud. I don’t see how the news media can duck responsibility for unleashing, by proxy, a vast army of ideologically blinkered tricksters by granting them access to the country’s most trusted channels of news distribution.

For the media, the solution is simple enough. Cut it out. Follow your own principles. If certain reporting techniques may not be used unless the information is exceptional and otherwise unobtainable, so be it. Stop legitimizing deceit by rewarding the deceivers.

Dark days Guatemalans who were deliberately infected with syphilis during medical tests in the 1940s are suing the U.S. government for compensation.

Good.

The lawsuit claims that hundreds of Guatemalan people, including psychiatric patients, were infected without their consent during government research studies on penicillin.

Last fall, U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, issued a public apology for the atrocities, which were part of a sexually transmitted disease study conducted by the U.S. Public Health Service from 1946 to 1948.

The lawsuit compares the study to the Tuskegee syphilis experiment that began in the 1930s in Alabama, in which doctors observed the progression of the disease in about 400 low-income African-Americans. The subjects were never told they had the disease and were never treated for it.

Both were shameful chapters in our history that we should never forget, to prevent them from being repeated.

Oops, we better not say anything negative about this country, it might be considered anti-American.

Houston, we have a problem Some of the stories coming out of the earthquake/tsunami tragedy in Japan are simply unbelievable.

And we’re not even referring to the horrible death toll, the inspiring tales of rescue or the “issues” with the nuclear plants.

We’re talking about the bigger picture, brothers and sisters.

Right-wing whackjob Glenn Beck says the earthquake may have been a “message” from God for us to get our acts together.

“What God does is God’s business,” Beck said on his Fox television show this week. (Thanks for clarifying, we were unclear on whether we could invade God’s privacy.) “But I’ll tell you this. … There’s a message being sent. And that is, ‘Hey, you know that stuff we’re doing? Not really working out real well. Maybe we should stop doing some of it.’”

Thanks, Glenn. Go back to your cave; we’ll call you when the End Times begin.

Even comedian Gilbert Gottfried was getting into the act, losing his Aflac commercial gig after unfortunate tweets like: “Japan is really advanced. They don’t go to the beach. The beach comes to them.”

The real truth in all of this may be coming from a Texan who periodically e-mails us predicting Armageddon and claiming to be “The Man Christ Jesus, Jose Luis de Jesus.” The thing is, this time, good ol’ Jose e-mailed us on March 7 — a full four days before the tragedy in Japan — and warned of “the severe earthquake that will soon take place — no earthquake like it has every occurred since mankind has been on Earth.”

It is the beginning of the Last Judgment, according to The Man, who seems to hail from Mission Control.

“Already,” the e-mail says, “The Man Christ Jesus is governing the nations directly from Houston — without having to move a finger — reaching the nations with technology and the ‘Image of the Beast,’ and has established firm soldiers worldwide who maintain the unity of the Spirit.

The Great Day is near. Only 481 days left or less.”

Emphasis on “or less.” People, shape up.

CRITICS QUESTION IMPACTS OF PROPOSED LONGMONT AIRPORT EXPANSION

THE

ONGOING BATTLE ABOUT WHETHER TO EXTEND THE RUN-

WAY AT THE VANCE BRAND MUNICIPAL AIRPORT IN LONGMONT IS POISED TO TAKE OFF AGAIN.

A local group of activists, primarily composed of those who live near the airport, has raised concerns in the past about possible effects of an expanded runway, including noise, environmental impacts, decreased home values, even effects on schoolchildren in the area.

Proponents of the longer runway have cited the positive economic impacts the expansion could have, such as companies relocating to Longmont and bringing new jobs, or even the revenue boost from existing local companies and pilots beginning to make more use of an improved airport. They say improvements are needed to bring the local airport up to modern standards.

But opponents argue that an anticipated airport consultant’s report will be biased in favor of extending the runway, because the study has been funded primarily by a pro-aviation federal agency, is being conducted by pro-aviation employees, and is being guided by local groups loaded with pro-development agendas — including the city council.

The standoff could become another pro-growth vs. anti-growth issue in the local November election, given that two city council seats and the mayor job are up for grabs.

THE STANDOFF

The idea is to extend the runway from 4,800 feet to 6,200 feet, and the two sides have been at it for a while.

websites. The pro-expansion group, PLANE (Promoting Longmont Airport’s Needed Expansion), has http://theplanetruth.org. The opponents, CARE (Citizens Against Runway Expansion), maintain http:// longmontairportcare.com. The former features a pointby-point rubuttal of their opponents’ long list of arguments. The pro-expansion camp likes to call the antiexpansion group “SCARE.” Howard Morgan, chair of the Longmont Airport Advisory Board (AAB), says the current runway is not long enough for many planes to refuel fully and then take off again. Weight requirements, combined with the short runway, often require jets to take off with less than a full tank, meaning they have to stop and land at other airports prior to their final destination. Morgan says this is a deterrent to using Longmont’s airport.

In addition, he says, the airport, and hence the city, are losing revenue they could be making on selling fuel.

(The city gets about 10 cents in taxes from every gallon of fuel sold.)

“We’re just serving these planes for nothing if they’re not buying fuel,” he says, adding that the airport’s deficiencies deter corporate officials from meeting in Longmont. “They’re not flying around looking for a hamburger; they’re looking to do business.”

Morgan says additional fuel revenue could lead to improvements such as a business conference room and a crew rest station. He notes that local major employers Amgen and Seagate don’t use the airport because of its deficiencies. Morgan also says the outdated facility might deter NASA from placing a planned aerospace research park in Longmont, a claim that opponents deny, citing the fact that the better-equipped Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport in Broomfield and the Fort Collins/Loveland Municipal airports are each only about 30 miles away.

Morgan says the allegations that “kids are going to be retarded and wildlife are going to leave” if the runway is extended are outrageous, as is the idea that lengthening the runway is going to allow for large commercial flights, given weight limits.

Airport manager Tim Barth adds, “Everybody thinks that if the runway is extended we are going to have large jets coming in, and we’re not. We are physically limited, by the weight of the runway, on what type of aircraft we can accommodate here, to 30,000 pounds.”

Complicating things is the aerodynamics of flight.

He says the “thinner” air at this altitude makes it more difficult to take off, and requires the additional speed that a longer runway can provide, especially in the higher temperatures of summer.

“This runway, at sea level, would be fairly adequate,” Morgan explains. “But up here, the air is less dense.

“If anything, a longer runway is safer,” he says. “If a plane has a mechanical failure [during takeoff ], it needs enough runway remaining to be able to stop.”

STACKED DECK?

Now opponents of the project have started shining a light on what they say are flaws in the process.

David Hignite, who flew as a private pilot for about 10 years and now lives near the airport, questions whether “special interests” such as the city councilappointed Airport Advisory Board, the Longmont Chamber of Commerce and the Longmont Area Economic Council will exert undue influence on the outcome. He also wonders whether the consultant charged with preparing a master plan for the airport will be willing to bite the hand that feeds it. Since $150,000 of the $204,000 price tag for the master plan being drafted by consultant Jviation is being funded by the pro-aviation Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Hignite says, the consultant will naturally have a bias in favor of recommending an extension of the runway. (He also points out that members of the Jviation team used to work for the FAA and the Colorado Department of Transportation, which is contributing funding to the project as well. Jviation did not respond to a request for comment.)

Hignite and other CARE members also claim that the FAA’s $150,000 contribution to the master plan is Boulder Weekly

federal stimulus money, and as such is wasting general tax dollars and contributing to the national deficit unnecessarily.

“Why are we going to triplicate services, with federal dollars, that are already available in Loveland and Broomfield?” he asks.

But the other side points out that the FAA requires new master plans to be developed every five to seven years, and vehemently denies that the federal grant contains a dime of stimulus money. Airport expansion proponents say the funding came from aviation users, with revenues from fuel, passenger and air freight taxes and fees.

Hignite points to FAA budget documents showing that the federal appropriation for such grants received an infusion of $1.1 billion in fiscal year 2009, bringing it up to $4.9 billion. But local FAA airport planner Linda Bruce says that particular $150,000 grant included no stimulus funds, and she provided documents showing that the grant does not appear on a list of stimulusfunded projects. In addition, the master plan does not fit the description of stimulus-eligible projects, since it is not shovel-ready construction and the city is providing matching funds (the Colorado Department of Transportation chipped in $37,631, and the city is paying the balance).

One lingering question, CARE member Diane Wood asks, is where the money will come from to do the runway extension or other improvements. In its proposal, Jviation cites its accomplishments in securing $34 million in stimulus funding for other airport projects, including three in Colorado. But proponents of the expansion insist that only user-generated revenue, not stimulus money, will be used to carry out improvements.

“This is not taxpayer money that is being misappropriated in any way, shape or form,” says city council member Katie Witt. “I understand how some people might like it to be that, but it’s not.”

NOT NIMBYS

Some chalk up the opposition to the runway expansion as a “not in my backyard” reaction from nearby homeowners.

But Hignite insists his group is not anti-growth and was “just as excited as anybody” that NASA was looking at Longmont as a possible location for a research park.

“We’re very pro-growth, but let’s do it in a manner that is positive for the community,” he says. “We’re not interested in seeing the airport closing. We’re just concerned about seeing it commercialized. … Southwest isn’t going to fly 737s in there, we understand that. But they talk about charter planes flying in, which are commercial.”

Hignite points to several ways in which city officials have not complied with FAA guidelines for the project, and he questions why they aren’t doing a more thorough examination of the expansion’s environmental and socioeconomic impacts. (Airport manager Barth says this is just a master plan, and that full-fledged studies of environmental and other impacts are required to be done before any improvements can be made.)

City council is abdicating its responsibilities, Hignite says, because members are turning the study of the project over to a pro-aviation consultant funded by a proaviation federal agency, without doing a cost-benefits analysis.

He adds that while Longmont Mayor Bryan Baum has said eight to 10 companies have decided to not relocate to Longmont because the airport is inadequate, Baum and others have declined to disclose the names of those groups.

Hignite says extending the runway now would be switching directions in midstream, given city officials’ rebuttal of a recommendation to expand it seven years ago, and their decision in the 1980s to authorize the construction of housing developments and schools in the area (he says the area around the airport has seen the addition of six schools with about 3,600 kids and approximately 4,000 homes.)

“This battle was fought 20 years ago, and the decision was made that an expanded airport wasn’t that important to Longmont’s growth,” he says.

But now, according to Hignite, city officials like Baum have been talking about the runway extension like it’s a done deal. He quotes an e-mail sent by council member Witt that says, “I am supporting the extended runway because we have been asked to do so by the FAA.” “It’s a very questionable process,” Hignite says. “It’s a biased process. The citizens aren’t being heard.”

AT WITT’S END

Witt, who serves as the city council liaison to the Airport Advisory Board and whose Ward II includes the airport and surrounding neighborhoods, acknowledged in an interview that she and other city officials initially spoke out of turn in favor of the runway extension, before they knew about guidelines discouraging such comments. She says that in the e-mail quoted by Hignite, she was referring to the FAA’s support for expanding the airport seven years ago, the last time city council voted the proposal down.

“This was, unfortunately, handled in not the optimal fashion, just by virtue of not knowing how we do business as a city council,” she says. “I know that folks feel like the fix was in and that this is all window dressing. I can tell you from a city councilperson’s perspective that none of us on council were approached by the FAA.” As for Hignite’s claim about the consultant’s inherent bias in the process, Witt says, “I don’t know that there are any consultants out there that don’t have the same qualifications, interest and resume as Jviation.

Obviously they are in this business because they see the value in it. I do not believe that there would be a consultant out there that would meet David Hignite’s requirements to be predisposed to not support taking care of our infrastructure.”

Witt adds that Jviation doesn’t have a vested interest in the outcome.

“They will not be doing the work to actually do the runway, so it doesn’t benefit them one way or another,” she says. “They still get paid the same amount of money whether they recommend to extend the runway or not.”

Witt says she is withholding final judgment on the runway question until she sees the consultant’s final analysis.

“I have not heard anything yet that would make me not vote for it, but I don’t have the study yet,” she says, adding that she’ll base her decision on what is best for the city.

“Even if it means I don’t get re-elected, I will have a clear conscience,” she says.

While Witt agrees that it is likely to become an election issue, she thinks most Longmont residents don’t seem too concerned about it.

“I would say probably 80 percent of Longmont doesn’t care,” Witt says. “Of the last 20 percent, twothirds support extending the runway and one-third is very, very against it. That’s just based on my conversations, it’s not by any means scientific.”

She does understand the concerns of area residents

about the effect an expansion might have on what is likely their largest investment — their home value — during an economic downturn.

“When you have potentially something coming in that may decrease your home value, that obviously is going to upset people,” Witt says.

MILE-HI NOISE

Officials say airport noise is unrelated to the length of the runway. And AAB Chair Morgan says newer business jets are quieter than old planes, especially given tests that have shown that “the noise on the traffic on the road is quite a bit higher than the airplane’s.”

The vast majority of noise complaints are leveled at the planes used by Mile-Hi Skydiving.

“When they’re running both planes during the high season, we don’t have peace from early in the morning to when the sun sets at night,” says Teresa Foster, who lives nearby. “I’m worn out and ready to move. I always pray for bad weather so they can’t jump.”

But officials say that company’s traffic will remain unchanged, regardless of the expansion decision.

“Extending the runway will not benefit them one way or another, because they only need half of the runway anyway,” Witt says.

“They do what they can to minimize their impact,” airport manager Barth says of Mile-Hi. “The thing that hurts them most is they do not have a choice where they fly. They are dictated by the FAA Air Traffic Division on where they fly and how they fly in there.”

Barth says the Jviation study has just entered the first of its three phases, and the consultant is currently doing an inventory of the airport’s resources. At the end of each of the three phases, Jviation will issue a “working paper” and host a public meeting.

CARE members, who say the one city advisory group on which they had representation was eliminated, express dismay that Jviation plans to have “open house style” gatherings with learning stations instead of traditional hearings with oral public comment in an audience setting.

The latter, Jviation says in its proposal, “are not a good forum in which to have a beneficial discussion of issues.” Instead, it says, each of its learning stations will be manned by a staff member or consultant who “can provide information and receive input in an informal setting.”

In the end, Barth says, Jviation will simply lay out the alternatives and won’t make a recommendation to city council. Then it will draft the master plan according to the option the council chooses. And this may take a while.

“There’s obviously a lot of attention drawn to this from the public,” Barth says, noting that it could be early 2012 before all is said and done. “And we want to be thorough, very thorough, in our public presentation and gathering input and comment from the public, because the airport belongs to the entire city of Longmont. If that slows the timeframe down, so be it.”

Barth stresses that the master plan process is not just about the debated expansion, it’s about other possible airport facility improvements, from the bathrooms to the parking lots to the utilities.

“The most important thing is this is not just about a runway extension,” he says. “It’s about a plan for an infrastructure facility that needs to serve the needs of the city over the next 10 to 15 years. I know this thing has snowballed into a runway extension, but there’s so much more to it than that.”

Fire rebuilders keep eye on green goals

D

oug Parker, building sustainability examiner for Boulder County, is working with many of those who are determined to build anew after last year’s Fourmile Canyon fire.

“What I do is talk to people about the kind of things I wish I had known when I built my own house in 1975,” says Parker, who spent 30 years in the building industry before taking on the county job created about two and a half years ago.

He also helps people navigate the county’s BuildSmart energy code and pool resources with others, as is done in the Fourmile Fire Rebuilders Club, a building materials co-op.

Many survivors plan to go green beyond county standards, as close to “net-zero” — when energy production matches consumption — as

by Charmaine Ortega Getz possible. These folks range from the awesomely adept to the learning-aswe-go types, and we hope to feature their progress in future columns.

For instance, there’s Alice Starek, an architect who built her mountain home in the mid-1980s out of Cempo — an environmentally friendly composite of recycled polystyrene (best known as Styrofoam) and cement. Fortunately, she also had a small farm property in Boulder into which she was planning to move.

She intends to replace the existing farmhouse using local materials and with simplicity — allowing her to build with unskilled labor.

“Straw-bale construction with a post-and-beam structure from surplus logs cut down for fire mitigation,” she says of the materials to be used. “It will be a passive solar design also using active solar thermal for 100 percent of the domestic

hot water, photovoltaics for 100 percent of the electric (both DC direct and AC grid tie) and a woodfired cook stove for 100 percent of the home’s heat.”

No less enthusiastic is Bruce Honeyman, who is working with an architect to maximize the advantages of his Sunshine Canyon site. He still has almost too many choices.

“Before the fire, we just had a well-built home with a tight thermal envelope,” he says. “Now we’re looking at additional options, such as radiant heat systems. Everything has a trade-off that has to be considered.”

Not everyone who suffered the fire’s devastation is rebuilding from scratch. For Sam and Cheryl Sussman, owners of Eight Days a Week Imaging & Copying Center in Boulder, replicating their vintage, ecoconscious home was too daunting.

Sam Sussman and a group of friends, inspired by the late inventor Buckminster Fuller, built his original geodesic dome home back in the 1970s. Sussman went on to found a company that built panels for geodesic homes. But what the Sussmans had would never be the same.

“It was always a really windy spot,” says Sam Sussman. “Then the fire took out all the trees that acted as a windbreak.”

After weighing costs and hassles, they bought a house just outside Boulder, installed a new Septic Smart system, and plan on adding more insulation.

But the new inventions of a greener lifestyle still hold their attraction for an older idealist. “[We] saw a solar-powered attic fan at a home products show in Denver,” said Sussman. “We’re getting it.”

BW, Eco-Cycle launch new awards, party

oulder Weekly and Eco-Cycle are teaming up to host the first-ever Boulderganic After Hours party this week to honor community members who have become leaders in sustainable

living.

The event is open to the public and will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 24, at Rueben’s Burger Bistro, at Broadway and Walnut Street in Boulder.

Boulder Weekly and Eco-Cycle chose winners in five categories who are pushing the envelope toward creating smart, sustainable change in the Boulder community.

The winners (and their categories) are: Namasté Solar (Innovations in Business), County Commissioner Will Toor (Public Service), Citizens for Boulder’s Clean Energy Future (Activism), the Boulder County Farmers’ Markets (Nurturing Community) and the four founding schools in EcoCycle’s Green Star Schools program (Sustainability).

Those schools are the Boulder Community School of Integrated Studies, Douglas Elementary, Horizons K-8 and High Peaks Elementary.

Boulderganic, a publication of Boulder Weekly Boulder Weekly

by Kaely Moore that draws on Boulder’s reputation for embracing local products and living green, is released three times a year, in the spring, summer and fall. First published in 2009, it has grown to include a burgeoning online following as well as a column that runs weekly in the newspaper.

Eco-Cycle, which was created by Boulder residents 35 years ago, is one of the largest nonprofit recyclers in the United States and has an international reputation as a pioneer and innovator in resource conservation. They work locally, nationally and internationally to create model Zero Waste communities.

“Eco-Cycle is working to make our community a model for sustainability and eco-conscious living,” says Marti Matsch, Eco-Cycle communications director. “To make that happen, it will take the ingenuity and participation of all sectors of our society. We are so fortunate to have among us some of the greatest visionaries who are leading the way and demonstrating what the potential is for each sector — businesses, organizations, individuals, schools and institutions — to make a difference on a significant scale. If we combine and follow their efforts, we can blaze a trail for living in balance with our planet and its finite natural

resources.”

David Grimsland, director of sales and marketing for Boulder Weekly, says the goal of Boulderganic is to become more than just a publication. He says that an essential component in taking the message of sustainable living to the next step is increased community involvement.

“The vision of Boulderganic is to be the catalyst for bringing people together and connecting the dots in the living local, living sustainable community,” Grimsland says.

Pamela White, Boulder Weekly editor, says Boulderganic is attempting to sharpen its focus on encouraging a community that is not only green and sustainable, but also independent.

“The more we can do for ourselves, the less we’re affected by economic trends and Wall Street crises,” White says. “We want to inspire people to move toward self-sufficiency and the reclaiming of their own lives.”

Boulderganic will be hosting several After Hours parties during the year to foster local involvement and maintain a more active role in the community.

It was six years last week that Great American Taxi first climbed the Boulder Theater stage for an all-star jam benefitting the Rainforest Action Group. Six long clicks on the meter later, keyboardist/singer Chad Staehly was

unloading his bags into a Cincinnati hotel before the band’s 9 p.m. gig at Stanley’s when we cornered him for a quick interview.

Not exactly an art deco venue a mere stagger from the Pearl Street Mall, but Cincinnati looks a lot more like the rest of the world than downtown Boulder does, and Staehly was jazzed to be there. see TAXI Page 20

“Ah, we’re doin’ great here in the Rust Belt,” he says. “We’ve been boppin’ along I-70 the last week or so. We headed straight out from home, did a few stops and then headed out to Morgantown, W.V., for a special edition of the Mountain Stage Radio Show.”

The Morgantown gig found GAT in familiar company, playing with longtime buddy Todd Snider and Railroad Earth, whose fiddle player Tim Carbone produced the band’s now year-old breakout second CD Reckless Habits. Staehly says the CD, a rambling and strutty cask of Americana, Gram Parsons-streaked country rock and prairie ballads, continues to show life on playlists around the country — almost, hearing Staehly tell it, to the band’s unexpected satisfaction.

“Yeah, the album was received really well and is still getting a lot of airplay on Americana radio stations, community radio and independent radio,” Staehly laughs. “Surprisingly, a lot of stations have gone six and eight songs deep into the record, so it’s not even like it’s been one song that’s had a ton of life to it. It’s been a huge chunk of the record.

Or sometimes, it isn’t even the CD, which is losing its grip as the central offering from artists to fans, in deference to file-sharing, satellite radio and other, less financially impactful modes of media acquisition.

“I think [the CD] still documents a band’s place in time,” Staehly says.

“People do listen to the music. …

They’re not paying for it, but they listen to it. It’s basically to get more people at your shows.

“It seems now, to me, where I see the media is going is YouTube. So, really what you want to do is record some songs, but then make some visual representation to that song too, because that’s where so many people are going for music these days. So I think that’s what we’re going to be doing with this next recording … making some video stuff to go with it.

“And it can be a little scary, when you’re talking about guys in their 30s and 40s, and there’s a pile of kids out there who are good-looking and putting their stuff up on YouTube. I mean … we’re not exactly a boy band.”

Drive-By Truckers release second album from 2010 sessions

W

hen the Drive-By Truckers went into the studio to make a record a couple years ago, the songs came out fast and furious. Make that a lot of songs came quickly, very quickly.

“We knew pretty early we definitely had two records shaping up,” says guitarist/singer Mike Cooley. “A bunch of the songs were done all in that batch. After [the 2010 CD] The Big To-Do was pretty much out, we went back in and cut a few more songs and had an album. It was pretty obvious we had two different albums back then.

What that means is I get to tour for another year.”

Go-Go Boots, the second album compiled from those sessions, was released in mid-February to the strong reviews that accompany nearly every release by the Truckers.

Go-Go Boots is being called the band’s countrysoul album, while The Big To-Do was its power-pop/ rock turn. But Cooley doesn’t look at the discs that way.

“I don’t really see those categories anymore,” he says. “I think what Loretta Lynn did was as much soul music as what Aretha Franklin did. It was soul music from a different place. I don’t see what rock ’n’ roll artists are doing as much different from what country artists do. It’s all the same, I think.”

That said, he acknowledges that Go-Go Boots in particular was influenced by the band’s stints as backup band for soul singer Bettye LaVette, on her 2007 album Scene of the Crime, and for legendary keyboardist Booker T. Jones, on his 2009 album Potato Head.

“What’s different here is more sonically than the songs themselves,” Cooley says. “The songs take a little different twist because of the way you’re playing them. But it’s more of a sonic thing. The way we’re

playing together definitely came about doing the Booker record and touring with him some.”

Patterson Hood, Cooley’s partner in leading the Truckers, contributes murder ballads, tales of fired cops and family Thanksgivings to Go-Go Boots, while bassist Shonna Tucker adds a very soulful vocal on a cover of an Eddie Hinton song.

Cooley’s contributions to Go-Go Boots are a trio of country shuffles, the barroom weeper “Cartoon Gold,” the woeful “The Weakest Man” and “Pulaski,” a story song about a Tennessee girl who moves to California.

His vocals are classic, tear-in-my-beer twangy.

That wasn’t, at all, a calculated approach to the songs, nor was the pure country outcome.

“It’s what I sound like. You’ve got to work with what you’ve got,” Cooley says. “I just let my voice do what it does — which, apparently, is country.”

Last year marked the 25th anniversary of the partnership between Cooley and Hood that is at the core of the Truckers. The Truckers came to national attention with 2001’s Southern Rock Opera, a record that told the story of Lynyrd Skynyrd within the band’s

usual meditations on the contemporary South.

Since then, they’ve released six studio albums, a live disc and a rarities package.

The Big To-Do was the band’s highestcharting album ever, and Go-Go Boots appears to be headed in the same upward direction.

That’s an indicator that these are good times for the veteran band.

“It seems to be kind of on an upswing,” Cooley says. “You have your ups and downs with audiences and ticket sales. That’s just the business of doing business. You have little plateaus where you don’t seem to be going anywhere, then the wind blows a different direction and things pick up. We’re in a pretty good place now.”

As is their standard, the Truckers are out on the road for an extensive tour. Songs from Go-Go Boots will play a prominent role in the shows. But Cooley said there’s no telling what the band might play on any given night.

“We don’t do any set lists or anything, so I’m trying to stay one step ahead, to think what would be good for this audience,” he says. “And when I remember songs, I think, ‘Did we play that at sound check or last night or have we already played it tonight?’ There are times I have to walk over to Patterson and ask if we’d played a song already. No set list, no teleprompters, no nothing.”

Don’t expect to see a new Truckers record early next year. There’s not another disc in the can from the To-Do sessions. After touring for most of 2011, the band will need to recharge its batteries before it is ready to go back into the studio, Cooley says.

“We’ll take a breather, back off some,” Cooley says. “We’ll still do a few shows. … We’ll take some time until we’re ready to write again and then we’ll want to tour.”

Infamous Stringdusters get a Grammy boost

hris Pandolfi’s timing was a year off. The banjo player for the Infamous Stringdusters intently watched last year’s Grammys hoping for some recognition of the band’s self-titled release. When the time came and went, so did Pandolfi’s attention span toward the Grammy topic.

With another stellar bluegrass release in 2010, the Grammys were kinder to the band, bestowing the award on the band’s third album, Things That Fly. Only this time, Pandolfi says he wasn’t paying an ounce of attention. Once a friend alerted him, Google took care of the rest as the six members of the Nashville collective found out they’d earned music’s highest honor.

“I was in Nashville with [Andy] Falco when I first heard,” Pandolfi says. “I wasn’t paying any attention to it at all, but I got a message from a friend saying, ‘Congratulations on the nomination.’ There was some quick Google-searching right after that, and we were able to figure out what was going on. We had an impromptu celebration that lasted a few days, and then we did it all again in L.A. It’s a universal accolade for a musician, so it’s certainly helped, publicitywise. We’re psyched. It was a great thing all in all.”

The Stringdusters participated in the usually overlooked pre-televised portion, but Pandolfi says that didn’t take away from the sheer spectacle of having so many musical icons in the same event. With an incredible night of music followed by the traditional after-party, Pandolfi and the rest certainly enjoyed themselves. Yet it was some unexpected red carpet run-ins that brought the most memorable Grammy moments.

“I got a great picture of Jesse, our mandolin player, with The Situation from Jersey Shore,” Pandolfi says.

pet right next to Dave Mustaine and the rest of Megadeth, so that was nice. We’ve got an eclectic group here with some old-school tastes that aren’t quite as obvious in our music, but we have logged some time listening to Megadeth, among others. The whole thing was so cool.”

The Grammy spotlight brought a memorable weekend, but it also brings some additional pressure to a touring regimen that was already rather stressful.

The Stringdusters cross the country multiple times each year, and the band’s growing audience means the momentum won’t stop soon.

“We’re actually looking at our schedule now and stressing at how packed it is,” Pandolfi says. “Of course, that’s a good problem to have. We’ve done this for years, which might be why it looks so daunting.

We try to keep things balanced, but we also have offers coming in that are hard to say no to. It’s hard to have a

schedule that is taking advantage of the opportunities coming our way while simultaneously affording everyone the opportunity to stay sane and lead their lives.”

Some established road rules keep the Dusters sane away from home, and Pandolfi says each person has his own routine. Some general rules include no overnight driving and every person sleeping in his own bed every night. Those simple pleasures maintain order and allow the guys to enjoy the musical side of things.

Another challenge facing the band is playing to a larger crowd. While you might believe that it gets easier with a larger critical mass, Pandolfi says there is a whole new dynamic in play when performing for 1,000 people instead of 100. It’s a muscle the Dusters are still learning to flex, but recent sellouts even before the Grammy platform ensure they need to learn quickly.

“I was having a conversation with our manager the other day and I said, ‘We’ve been selling out some bigger shows for a while now, and that helps, but it’s not until after you’ve done it a few times that you get up in front of that crowd and know what you want to do,’” he says. “You gotta be ready to collaborate with a crowd of a thousand people. You have to be able to go with them where they want to go, and if you work it that way, it can become a truly great show.”

As they hone their craft, the Infamous Stringdusters will continue to draw and captivate larger crowds. That’s ultimately the exchange Pandolfi says is why they do what they do. “We know what we want to do and what we want to create on a consistent basis for people, while the audience knows that’s what they’re getting and they’re starting to just show up more and more.”

Outdoor Tech Evolution Gadgets get more powerful, more affordable and easier to use

A

box of photographs has been sitting in my closet for nearly a decade now, waiting to be digitized and organized.

Film photography seems so quaint in this age of rapidly evolving technology, though the nostalgic charm is somewhat diminished as I flip through photo after photo. There we are, my friends and I, with eyes closed on the summits of mountains or with big fat thumbs obscuring an otherwise stunning sunset. And to think I paid for these crummy pictures, even more if I got them developed in an hour! If I got seven or eight good shots out of a roll of 24, I was usually pretty happy.

It was 2003 when I retired my fancy-pants film camera (complete with a high tech remote!) for my first digital, a clumsy but lightweight device featuring a robust 2.2 megapixel resolution and a shutter speed that took a good three seconds to actually take a picture. Likewise, it was about that same time I acquired 34 March 17, 2011

my first GPS, the Garmin GPS12, which did little more than draw a line on a black and white screen and offer up geographical coordinates. Despite the unwieldy interface and quick-draining battery system, the fact that I could (for free) know my position on planet earth from satellites in outer space blew my mind. Actually, it still does today.

Rather quietly, technology has gotten easier on the wallet, more intuitive and generally accepted in the outdoors community. With all apologies to nature purists, the fact that you can take a photograph and have it online in mere seconds or chart your tracks across the globe using free software like Google Earth adds an exciting new element to archiving outdoor adventures. There’s no doubt the technology of 2011 will seem as antiquated as whale blubber lamps in five years, but until then, here’s some of the coolest advances in outdoors tech available right now in the

avid Norris (Matt Damon) is a young go-getter New York politician who has a chance encounter with the quirky, engaging Elise Sellas (Emily Blunt), a ballerina who captures his attention immediately. Strange forces are at work and Norris is assaulted and wakes up in a warehouse, surrounded by mysterious dark-suited men in fedoras. Their leader is Richardson ( John Slattery), who explains to Norris that there’s a Plan, as mapped in their constantly changing notebooks. He cannot be with Elise in the Plan.

The Adjustment Bureau transforms into an action film once the watchers show up, and while fate keeps causing Norris to bump into Sellas, it becomes clear that if he’s going to try to exercise free will and pursue her, he’s going to do so at the risk of the Bureau wiping his memories. Watcher Harry (Anthony Mackie) sympathizes with Norris and helps him learn what’s going on and how to wrest back control of his own fate.

There’s a retro feel to The Adjustment Bureau that has just as much to do with the cinematography as set design and the Mad Men-esque costumes of the mysterious Bureau. At times I wished that they’d filmed it all in black and white. Contemporary Manhattan and the outer boroughs have a timeless-

Aliens love Los Angeles

ar is hell.

And so is alien invasion.

That’s the long and short of Battle: Los Angeles, a war movie with nasty, insect-like extraterrestrials standing in for every enemy the Marines have ever faced.

Yet, despite the plot predictability, the boilerplate dialog, and stretching too close to two hours, Battle: Los Angeles builds enough suspenseful tension — especially in its first half — to take it out of contention for the worst LA-gets-leveled splatter-rama to make it to the big screen.

Aaron Eckhart is Michael Nantz, a staff sergeant stationed in Southern California who’s just days shy from early retirement after a particularly grueling overseas assignment in which several of his men were killed. But, wouldn’t you just know it, he can’t put his uniform away just yet because that strange meteor shower over L.A. Turns out it’s the first wave of a brutal alien attack.

Nantz and his unit are tasked with rescuing a group of civilians trapped in an abandoned police station behind enemy lines in Santa Monica. They’ve got three hours to get them out before the Air Force turns the beachfront city into a bombed-out wasteland.

ness to them that is mirrored in our gradual understanding of just who the watchers are and what The Plan is.

In a subtle but provocative moment, Norris responds to Harry’s assurance that the Bureau wasn’t responsible for the death of his mother by asking if it was just random chance. Harry declines to answer, one of the few glimpses of an even deeper good vs. evil story underneath the romantic chase film that made it to the big screen.

Damon has made a career out of specializing in

the “strong, quiet type,” from his splendid work in the Bourne trilogy to Good Will Hunting, The Brothers Grimm and Invictus. He is similarly bland in this film, but it’s more than offset by Blunt’s nuanced performance.

She has the anger, the hurt, the passion of an artist who is thrown into a situation she doesn’t understand with a man who simultaneously confesses his love for her and pushes her away.

When Norris goes too far off plan in his pursuit of Sellas, the Bureau calls in the fixer, Thompson (Terence Stamp), who exudes a dangerous level of control, warning Norris that the consequences for his pursuit are great, both for him and for Sellas. Given the spiritual role of the Bureau, Thompson’s presence again invokes the same subtle question of good versus evil and the consequences of invoking evil for good intention.

Ultimately, The Adjustment Bureau is a delightfully paranoid love story with a retro sci-fi spin, a film that has a polished, sophisticated feel and that will also appeal to non-sci-fi fans. It’s also George Nolfi’s first directorial outing. Well done! I enjoyed the movie and recommend you check it out.

Of course, his Marines might as well be from Hollywood Rent-a-Soldier. There’s the nervous newbie, the traumatized and stressed-out, the husband-to-be who has so much to live for and a book-smart second lieutenant (Ramon Rodriguez, The Wire).

Still, for all of that, the chaotic claustrophobia and the shaky-cam vérité realism are effective, especially when the audience doesn’t yet know what the aliens look like or what they want. They’re just this malevo-

lent force intent on wiping our DNA off the face of the planet.

Eckhart displays the requisite square-jawed G.I. Joe ruggedness, and the film generally looks good. Director Jonathan Liebesman (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning), working from a script by Christopher Bertolini, does a pretty good job of destroying faux L.A. Leibesman avoids the usual shots of iconic structures being turned to ash and instead makes the entire landscape a nightmare of twisted overpasses and smoky horizons.

Anyone looking for the broader social implications of, say, District 9 (which shares some visual similarities to Battle: Los Angeles) or even Space: Above and Beyond — the short-lived, ’90s Fox series about Marines in combat against faceless, insect-like aliens — is bound to be disappointed.

None of that may matter, though. The door, wide enough to let through a mother ship full of angry aliens, is left open for a sequel. (c) 2011, Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Frozen yogurt trend descends on Boulder

oulderites are queuing up for self-serve dessert at Ripple Pure Frozen Yogurt.

On any given night, this frozen yogurt sensation — named after a Grateful Dead song — is packed with hungry people looking for a creative and affordable treat.

Ripple isn’t the first of its kind, and it won’t be the last in Boulder. In a trend that seems to be sweeping in from the West Coast, self-serve frozen yogurt joints are gradually popping up around the city. Ripple’s colorful little establishment will soon be joined by Aspen Leaf Yogurt, at Table Mesa and Broadway, and Spooners on the Twenty Ninth Street Mall.

With 16 flavors and at least 70 different toppings — many of which, like the cheesecake bites and birthday cake truffles, are baked fresh in Ripple’s bakery — customers have a seemingly endless combination of sweets to choose from.

Ripple co-founders Jamie Gardner and David Humphrey say that they didn’t expect Ripple, which opened in January, to become such a fast-growing hit.

The yogurt shop barely got a soft open before being swamped with eager customers.

“It’s weird to us that we’ve started something that has gotten so popular so fast,” Humphrey says.

“Everybody is in a good spirit because it’s in such a fun environment.”

Gardner, an admitted frozen yogurt addict, has been interested in the self-serve model since the mid1980s after she first saw one in a convenience store attached to a gas station.

She and Humphrey started work on their frozen yogurt business more than a year ago, digging into research and flying out to L.A. to find out what places were working best. After seeing how successful the

self-serve model was in California, the couple decided that it would be the best model for them as well.

Unlike much of their competition, Ripple’s owners opted out of the franchise idea, going instead for a single store location on 30th Street and Canyon Boulevard.

Gardner and Humphrey are moving toward generating energy for the store using wind power, and all of the products at Ripple — except for the yogurt cups — are compostable. One of the store’s primary goals, Humphrey says, is to be as carbon-neutral as possible.

“We wanted to make it a distinctly Boulder store,” Humphrey says.

And the store is looking at some distinctly serious competition.

Scott Capdevielle, managing partner at Aspen Leaf Boulder, says that Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory — which owns the Aspen Leaf franchise —

plans to open five Aspen Leaf locations in Boulder County within the next two years.

Capdevielle expects the market for self-serve frozen yogurt places to get increasingly competitive, especially in places like Boulder, where all-natural, healthy products are more greatly emphasized.

“I’m a believer in bringing in professionals from the beginning so we ensure that we’re one of the guys that survives,” Capdevielle says.

Aspen Leaf, like Ripple, will get its frozen yogurt from Boulder Ice Cream, which prides itself on producing a completely all-natural product.

Ashley Patterson, a student at the University of Colorado at Boulder and frequent Ripple customer, says one reason she thinks frozen yogurt is gaining popularity in Boulder is because it offers a healthier dessert alternative.

“I do see Boulder as a really healthy place to live, so knowing that there’s something a little more healthy makes it more appealing, for sure,” Patterson says.

Patterson also says that she plans on trying out all of the new frozen yogurt places once they open up in town.

Humphrey and Gardner say they aren’t too worried about their competition. For the moment, they will continue trying to keep up with the demand of Ripple’s zealous crowds and preparing for their grand opening event at the beginning of next month, the proceeds of which will help benefit the Boulder Homeless Shelter.

“We can’t be overly concerned about the competition because there’s not much we can do about it,” Gardner says. “If anything, it just makes more people know about the product.”

ell, you know the saying, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

I’m not a good listener. I suppose that’s not breaking news.

I’m taking an old favorite and tweaking it. Just a little, mind you, but still tweaking. In honor of March, and the little leprechauns that I hang with on a daily basis, I’m making Shamrock Krispie Pops.

What are they, you ask? I’m making Rice Krispie treats with a few adjustments, then shaping them into shamrocks, sticking them with a popsicle stick, dipping them in white chocolate and then dousing them with green sprinkles. I mean, who wouldn’t?

Although this isn’t a treat you will see popping up on a Frasca menu anytime soon, it sure is a fun thing to do with the kids and the kid at heart. No matter how fancy-pants you are, Rice Krispie treats always somehow satisfy. This is where the “don’t fix it” part comes into play, because I am putting my own little twist on it. I am adding cinnamon and a wee bit of almond extract.

Because we are dipping in white chocolate, this is a super-sweet, make-your-teeth-hurt kind of treat, and I think the additions cut down on that a bit, and make it more of a pleasure to eat. You could just pair it with a Guinness and call it a day, but I like the added ingredients, and think you will too.

Either way, have that Guinness or three — it makes everything a bit more fun, including your preparation process, especially if there a lot of kids are involved. I mean, unless there are a lot kids involved, of course.

You don’t have to cut these into the shamrock shapes, but gosh darn it, why wouldn’t you? Have a little fun, it’s March.

People, I’m here for you all month with profound words of wisdom like, “Have fun, it’s March.”

Now, follow the directions, put some love into it and invite me over when

it’s done.

Shamrock Krispie Pops 1/4 cup unsalted butter 40 large marshmallows Pinch of salt 1/2 tsp. cinnamon 1/4 tsp. almond extract 5 cups Rice Krispie Cereal 1 cup white chocolate chips Green sprinkles 12-14 popsicle sticks

Line a 9-inch-by-13-inch baking pan with foil or parchment paper.

Grease with butter or non-stick cooking spray.

In a medium saucepan, melt butter. Make sure pan is coated with butter. Add in marshmallows and let melt slowly. Stir in salt, cinnamon and almond extract, stir until smooth.

Spray a large bowl with non-stick cooking spray. Add the cereal to bowl. Pour melted marshmallow mix over top of cereal. Stir gently.

Press down into prepared pan.

Spray your hands with cooking spray or run under cold water and it won’t stick as you press down.

Let set for at least an hour. Pull treats out of pan and fold down foil.

Using a shamrock cookie cutter, cut out at least 10 shamrocks (piece together scraps, press together and make an extra shamrock or two).

Melt white chocolate slowly over low heat in small saucepan or in bowl in microwave.

Stick popsicle or lollipop stick gently in shamrock, through the stem. Frost the top with white chocolate, top with green sprinkles. Let set. Enjoy!

Note: You can just cut into squares and top with white chocolate.

Chocolate fest coming The Colorado Chocolate Festival is encouraging people to celebrate moms with chocolate this Mother’s Day at its two-day event May 6-7.

Starting on that Friday evening and continuing all day on Saturday, the Festival will be held at the Denver Merchandise Mart and will feature chocolate vendors from around the nation. Visitors will have the chance to sample and buy a variety of chocolates.

Taste Colorado wine Colorado’s wine country in the Grand Junction area will kick off its 2011 Taste of Adventure with premiere wine-tasting events this spring.

During the Grand Valley Winery Association Spring Barrel Tasting Weekends, which are April 30-May 1 and May 14-15, participants are invited to learn about winemaking and aging, with eight wineries pairing gourmet foods with featured wines.

Ticket purchasers receive random assignments to their first winery, where each receives a “weekend passport,” map and souvenir wine glass. Attendees then visit each winery on their own schedule, receive “behind-the-scenes” winery and vineyard tours, taste wines available to the general public and participate in barrel tasting. The passport also serves as a coupon for a 15 percent discount for wine purchases during the weekend.

Tickets are $60 per person.

Tickets are limited to 400 people per event weekend. It has the usual acres of rubbish, but also features a bonus area that the locals call “The Mall.” This is where people dispose of junk that might not actually be junk. It has no use for them any more, but they recognize that others might find value in it. It was at The Mall where my friend Peter found a perfectly good chainsaw that had a minor glitch he easily fixed.
