Running dry

The article/interview “Drying times” (cover story, Feb. 23) was interesting for some angles, but it ignored the “elephant in the room” of Front Range water problems: Growth.

As long as we have a growth-based economy, we will have worsening water problems and shortages. Conservation can only delay the problems; no amount of conservation can “beat the exponential” of constant population growth. (“Sustainable growth” is an oxymoron, and a dangerous one at that.)

It was also clear that agriculture will get short shrift — the attitude is, “Yeah, local agriculture is important

and all that, but ...” The topic trails off, but the message is clear: When cities demand more water to fuel growth, they’ll find a way to screw the farmers out of it. And farmers will be demanded to find conservation measures in the future, even though they’ve already done what they can. Once the farm cuts any wasted water, it’s left needing what a given crop needs. Reducing water below that amount reduces yields. You can’t dry-land farm vegetables in this region.

had two year-long deployments in the Afghanistan war. He’s often seen top commanders try to put a positive spin on a negative military situation, but in our Afghanistan quagmire, Davis saw that the candor gap had become a chasm, going from spin to outright lies.

Last year, he heard the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan tell Congress that the Taliban’s momentum there had been “arrested” and that our mission was “on the right azimuth” to succeed. That went against everything Davis himself was experiencing and — most significantly — it defied what casualty statistics were revealing. “You can’t spin the fact that more men are getting blown up every year,” he says.

citizen’s willingness to speak truth to power is essential for the well-being of a democracy. Equally essential, though, are citizens willing to risk their personal well-being by standing up to speak truth about power.

A

mericans may be bitterly divided on a range of hotbutton issues, but there’s one on which the vast majority of Americans agree — labeling genetically engineered (GE) foods.

Poll after poll shows that more than 90 percent of Americans want labels on foods that contain GE ingredients — GE corn in snacks and breakfast cereal, for example, or GE soybeans in frozen dinners. More than 40 countries, including China, require labeling of GM foods, but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, under the influence of biotech giants like Monsanto, claims there is no need to let consumers know what they’re buying because GE foods are “substantially equivalent” to their non-GE counterpart.

In making this claim, the FDA has completely missed the point: consumer choice.

Some of us are appalled by the idea of eating foods and food products that contain unnatural genetic material. It’s one thing to crossbreed different varieties of tomatoes, hoping to produce one that ripens quickly or is resistant to end rot. It’s quite another to install fish genes into a tomato to keep it from freezing.

GE foods, first approved for use in the United States in 1996, generate concern among so many of us precisely because these foods contain things that don’t belong together, elements that have not been joined together in the history of this planet, including proteins from bacteria and DNA sequences from viruses.

The potential for illness, previously nonexistent food allergies and other healthrelated problems is real. But rather than giving us a choice by requiring labeling, our government is allowing us to be used as guinea pigs.

As of this week, more than 900,000 people have submitted comments to the FDA in favor of labeling GE foods. And on Monday, March 12, 55 members of Congress submitted a bicameral letter demanding that the FDA require labeling of GE foods. Among those who signed the letter were two from Colorado’s delegation — Rep. Jared Polis and Rep. Diana DeGette, both Democrats. The Boulder County commissioners voted in December to press the state legislature to take up labeling for GE foods. (A previous bill on this issue, House Bill 146, which would have required labeling of GE foods, was killed way back in 2001.)

This push both from consumers and our congressional representatives couldn’t come at a more critical time. Monsanto, Dow, DuPont, Bayer and BASF AG have just won the promise of expedited approval for new GE seeds. The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced earlier this month that review periods are going to be cut in half to enable these biotech giants to sell a variety of new seeds designed to resist herbicides other than Roundup.

So called super-weeds, which can’t be killed by Roundup (glyphosate), now infest 60 million acres, up 25 percent from last year (and this according to the biotech industry itself ). New GE varieties of soybeans and corn are being designed to resist the herbicides dicamba and 2-4,D, one of two herbicides in Agent Orange.

Yes, Agent freaking Orange.

Scientists, scholars and activists raised concerns about super-weeds when Roundup resistant GE crops were introduced, but were assured by the biotech giants that smart farming would prevent super-weeds from becoming a problem.

D’oh! I guess they were wrong about that.

It’s not hard to imagine that the biotech industry, as blinded by profit as it is, could also be wrong about the cumulative impact of GE foods on our ecosystems and our bodies. In the meantime, these companies get richer creating a solution that creates a problem — for which they are paid and given streamlined government approval to create a solution. Of course, their solution will create a new problem as weeds develop resistance to dicamba and 2-4,D. Which brings us to the Weedpocalpyse.

Monsanto and the other biotech giants whine that the push for labeling is just an attempt to shutter their industry.

They tell us that it’s far too complicated for industry to trace the source of each ingredient in order to determine whether their products contain GE foods.

What bullshit! If 15 EU states and China can do it, so can we.

In the meantime, the only solution is to eat whole, unprocessed organic foods — and to speak out. The planet you’ll be protecting is your own.

might be mostly relocated in their own country; and on the other extreme, the broil setting, several tens of millions of refugees who will need to be received by other countries. Imagine tens of millions of refugees whose whole country is virtually under water who must go somewhere else. So many more refugees in Europe (in addition to the ones who will be flooding in from Africa) could stoke already virulent neo-Nazi movements. And here in the U.S.? — Yeah, right. … Maybe India?

Millions of Muslim refugees in a country with a delicate Hindu/Muslim balance?

Meanwhile, India would be having its own problems “adapting”: On the Gangeatic Plain of Northern India some global warming would make it hotter there in the months leading up to the monsoon, resulting in more evaporation that would require adaptation in crops and growing seasons, as well as strategies to keep humans from the heat. However, if we were to follow the logic of the Danish Plan and just keep the setting on broil, we are look-

ing at the melting of the Himalayan glaciers that feed the Ganges, so that it would virtually become nothing more than a seasonal super-arroyo in monsoon season. So there would no longer be reliable irrigation water and cropwilting, people-killing heat in the 120s or higher in an agricultural system that supports not only the half-billion residents of the plain, but also the half-billion of the rest of the country. So what’s the plan, Greenland homesteading? Curried caribou?

Namaste Mr. Danish. I hope that you will contemplate the “collateral damage” in terms of human lives and world peace that will be caused by just doing nothing.

HOW’S THAT PIE? When is meat no longer meat? When the FDA folks responsible for labeling the stuff refuse to eat it themselves. Not a bad guideline if you think about it.

We first heard about the chemical-treated slime that was being fed to our kids in public schools as hamburger a couple of weeks ago. We were outraged that such a thing could happen.

After all, “pink slime,” as it is now called, is a collection of beef byproducts formerly used only in pet foods. Now they are heating it and then spinning it to separate the textured salvage product from the partially liquefied fat. Then they sell us what’s left over as meat.

The two FDA whistleblowers who brought the “pink slime” to our attention are unified in their opinion that this stuff that is treated with ammonia isn’t meat at all, and they themselves refuse to eat it.

They claim that the only reason it is allowed to be labeled as meat by its manufacturer, the not-so-aptly named Beef Products Inc., is because higher-ups at the FDA with ties to the beef industry allowed it.

According to ABC News, the decision to call “pink slime” meat allegedly belongs to former Undersecretary of Agriculture Joann Smith, who was appointed to the board of Beef Products Inc.’s largest distributor, where she has made a cool $1.2 million so far. Wonder what her kids eat.

But before you start feeling sorry for schoolchildren, it is now being reported that more than 70 percent of all ground beef sold in stores contains the pink slime, formerly dog-food product as a filler.

It seems we’ve all been getting hosed by the FDA. It’s like the government is playing the role of the revengeful maid Minny from The Help and we’re the ones eating — shhh — slime. The only difference is that none of us, including our kids, did anything to deserve such an extreme and grotesque experience.

ANOTHER REASON SOUTHERN GOP WOMEN NEED CONTRACEPTION Just when you thought it was safe to drive across the South on your way to Florida, a new poll shows that it is likely a premature inkling.

Alabama and Mississippi Republicans have responded to a new poll from Public Policy Polling that asked about President Obama’s religious beliefs. The results must have made Donald Trump very proud.

In Alabama, only 14 percent of GOP respondents said Obama is a “Christian,” this despite the president having been a professing Christian for most of his adult life. The most popular answer was, of course, “Muslim,” with 45 percent of respondents choosing that answer. And finally, 41 percent of Alabama GOP voters polled said they weren’t sure of Obama’s religious preference. We could be wrong, but we’d be willing to bet that at least 41 percent didn’t know who Obama was. But we digress.

In Mississippi, the Republicans taking the same poll made their Alabama peers look like a bastion of progressive intellectuals. In the state best known as being number 50 in virtually every known category, only 12 percent went with Christian, while a whopping 52 percent answered Muslim.

Apparently the other 36 percent didn’t know what a Muslim was, so they just said they weren’t sure.

So it should come as no surprise that city officials seem tempted to repeat the same mistakes they have made in the past when it comes to the butte, the same mistakes that have wrongly cost Boulder taxpayers millions of dollars so far.

Considering what has transpired over the past 40 years since the city’s first involvement at the site, it seems fair to question whether the city has been either naïve in its handling of the Valmont Butte situation or has intentionally charged forward in some kind of misguided attempt to control its own destiny when it comes to cleaning up the old Allied mill site. Either way, the entire process has been one of the biggest blunders in city history when it

comes to protecting the health and wellbeing of the citizenry as well as being fiscally responsible with the taxpayers’ money.

The city and county’s failure to protect the health of local citizens from Valmont Butte contamination has a long and well-documented history.

Officials from the Boulder City/County Health Department, as it was called in the past, failed to stop Allied Chemical from dumping as much as 200,000 gallons per day of radioactive, lead- and arsenic-tainted water directly into the Public Service Co. lakes for some 30 years, from the early 1940s until the 1970s. They didn’t even stop the dumping once it was discovered.

From the lakes, this contamination was further released into the watershed, primarily Boulder Creek. And even though it is now known that this large (as much as 2 billion gallons) and potentially dangerous release did, in fact, occur, no government agency has ever made an effort to determine what downstream populations were exposed

n City of Boulder buries 200 truckloads of radium-contaminated soil from its housing project at Third and Pearl at the Allied mill site. The state issues the proper amendment to Allied’s Hazardous Materials License (HML), making the disposal of the contaminated soil legal.

The only possible exception is a single letter from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to the director of the Green Ditch in 1982, which appears to inquire about what farms might be using the water downstream from Valmont Butte for irrigation. A response was either not obtained from the ditch company or the information has since gone missing from the EPA’s files.

The only actual efforts ever made to try to identify cancer clusters or other problems potentially caused by this unprecedented, at least locally, level of toxic dumping have been nonscientific efforts by concerned citizens. And even these were very limited in scope, covering perhaps one square mile north of the Allied mill.

Such information is not easy to come by. Boulder Weekly has been trying to determine the historic municipal drinking water intakes from along Boulder Creek during the time span of this contamination release for more than

Records indicate that they suspect Allied Mill as the source of contamination. No action is taken.

n The site scores less than one point below the required 28.5 points needed to be placed on NPL. EPA recommends the site for “no further action.”

n Mill operator Tom Hendricks suggests capping the primary tailings pond and permanently storing contaminated tailings in place. To do so would require the Hazardous Materials License (HML) to be permanently revoked.

As has been the case throughout the Valmont Butte saga, the fear of financial liability seems to be by far the most powerful force driving the decisions of those responsible for keeping us safe and cleaning up the butte.

The City/County Health Department has known about the contamination in the wells along Valmont Road just north of the site and immediately below the dike dam since the 1960s. For years, the public record shows that health officials believed that the contamination was likely coming from the Allied mill site. And just this month, Warren Smith of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) said he believes that during the ’60s, ’70s and early ’80s, the contamination was leav-

ing the property and contaminating wells to the north. But he says he now believes that this is no longer the case.

But the question remains, if it was so obvious at the time, why did no one try to stop the contamination from getting into the wells, or at least stop the people from drinking the water? It seems that only after determining that the threat of human exposure to contamination has ceased to exist are they willing to acknowledge that it existed in the past.

So what should we believe today when they tell us that no such pathways currently exist from the old Allied mill site, while still refusing to properly test the Public Service lakes or drill the monitoring wells below the dike dam that would allow them to know if contamination is leaving the site now?

The other pattern that continues to emerge is the city’s repeated assumption that everything regarding the site’s contamination is now known and, therefore, it’s safe to push ahead with millions of dollars in expenditures. It’s the pattern that emerged when the city bought the property, and it’s the same pattern being applied to building a cap over the primary tailings pond. But the city’s belief that all of the problems with the property are now known is simply wishful thinking. Even the EPA admits that it has never done a full, comprehensive investigation at the site.

Three times in the past 30 years the EPA has investigated the site to one degree or another and declared that it’s in need of “no further action,” only to return years or decades later to discover additional contamination and remediation needs. Concerned citizens are now asking the agency to return yet again.

The lesson of Valmont Butte is that when something has taken 70 years to contaminate, it might just take that long to figure out where it is and clean it up.

So why is it that the city is again charging forward to build its $5 million cap, even though questions regarding groundwater in the tailings pond and whether it has the possibility to leach through the dam and migrate off the property remain? They remain primarily because no one is willing to spend $9,000 to drill a monitoring well below the dam to find out if this migration is, in fact, occurring.

Consider what the CDPHE told Tom Hendricks, a former mill operator at the Allied mill site, when he proposed capping the primary tailings pond in 1984. It told him that he shouldn’t do it as long as there were questions about groundwater in and around the pond.

The state went on to tell him that if groundwater were later found at the site, he would have to remove his cap along with the tailings, which would mean that the whole process would have been a waste of time and money.

It’s the same thing today. The city is acting as if it is impossible that new information regarding groundwater in and around the tailings pond could come to light — this despite the fact that such new discoveries have been commonplace at the butte.

It seems that every time the city is sure that nothing else can change at Valmont Butte, it costs taxpayers another two or three million dollars for this or that. It’s added up to quite a price tag for a piece of property that isn’t useable for anything at this point except for remembering its cultural heritage.

So are we headed that way yet again? Are we jumping too fast into a multi-million dollar expenditure that we may regret later when we have more information? If the March 7 Boulder City Council meeting is any indication, the answer could be yes.

But at least one city council member is questioning the approach this time around, despite staff ’s attempt to push ahead no matter what new evidence arises. **** During the public comment period at that meeting, Native American Rights Foundation Senior Staff Attorney Steven Moore asked the council to postpone the remediation of the city’s Valmont Butte property in light of the findings thus far in Boulder Weekly’s series. (He spoke on behalf of two other groups, the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center and the Valmont Butte Heritage Alliance.)

In particular, Moore highlighted two key questions that have been raised in the BW series — the disputed location of radioactive material from Third and Pearl streets dumped by the city at Boulder Weekly

n City of Boulder buys the property, even though it knows that it is likely responsible for future cleanup costs due to the 1971 radium.

n Concerned citizens request EPA once again reevaluate the property. EPA contacts CDPHE and is told there is absolutely no need to reevaluate and that the site has been fully remediated. EPA requests documents from the CDPHE verifying this claim and is told that none exist.

n EPA returns to the site and finds significant lead and radiation contamination. The dirt cap built by VBC is found to be too thin or nonexistent in some areas.

Contaminated groundwater is found in the tailings pond itself as well as on the east end of property.

This new information contradicts earlier findings by CDPHE, the city’s original consultant as well as the 1980s incarnation of the EPA.

n EPA final report states the agency’s 2004 site inspection was not a fully comprehensive inspection and that it did not drill enough monitoring wells to fully determine the scope of groundwater at the site. Even so, EPA returns the site to “no further action required” status.

n City proposes its $5 million Voluntary Cleanup Plan (VCUP) to the CDPHE,.The state approves the plan, which includes a dirt and rock cap, not a cap that will prevent water from passing through it into the contaminated tailings.

n City begins its remediation of the Valmont site starting with the elimination of prairie dogs.

The latter claim, he noted, “focuses on the oft-made claim that there is no way by which contaminants at the Valmont Butte site can migrate to contaminate water sources to the north of the city’s property. The Weekly’s investigation has shown this assertion to be patently false, because it is based on a collection of assertions, each in turn at least partially unproven or completely false due to the fact that the sampling required for verification was never performed by either the EPA or the CDPHE.” Moore said the new information “demonstrates the old truism that you don’t find what you don’t look for.”

Given those two points, Moore said, “it is clear that the city should immediately put on hold the $5 million cleanup it expects to soon begin at Valmont Butte. Before proceeding with the cleanup, the city needs, first, to determine precisely where the radioactive debris from Third and Pearl was dumped at Valmont Butte. Second, the city must ensure that the never-done sampling related to groundwater at the site is finally done. Both these steps entail sampling not previously performed; the required sampling must be done in a way that is transparent and technically sound. We believe it should be independently verified.”

Finally, Moore said, the results of such tests may require the agreement between the city and Honeywell to be renegotiated, “to design and to accomplish a cleanup that is more appropriate to actual conditions at Valmont Butte.

We ask that you convene open, public meetings with your staff and consultants to get to the bottom of the serious issues raised in the Weekly’s series prior to authorizing the commencement of the cleanup.”

“Several people spoke about Valmont Butte, and the idea of postponing the VCUP [the city’s Voluntary Clean-Up Program],” Morzel said. “If we wanted to do that, what would be the process?”

City Attorney Tom Carr replied, “I don’t know, the VCUP has been ordered by a federal court as part of a judgment.

It’s an agreement we’ve been working on for years. I’d have to look at that and figure out how we re-open that to delay it.”

Morzel, a geologist and longtime council member, responded, “In this series of articles, it does bring up a lot of concerns that we haven’t adequately identified where the real problem is.”

“We’ve spent millions working on finding what the real problem was,” Carr countered. “I know the articles said some things, but I’m not sure what you’d do other than hire really qualified consultants and scientists to do the work, and I believe that has been done.”

But Morzel remained undeterred.

“I recognize that, but it does concern me that, at least in these reports, it states there hasn’t been adequate groundwater sampling at the locations that people think should be sampled, so there’s just some issues that have come up, and sometime I think we should sit down and have a discussion.”

Carr agreed to the request, reluctantly. **** As they push ahead with their plans, city officials say they are confident the proposed cleanup at Valmont Butte is sufficient, despite evidence to the contrary. They maintain that even though the EPA found that groundwater is pooling and doming in the primary tailings pond where the contaminated Boulder Weekly

materials are currently located — and where additional contamination will be buried — there is no evidence that any groundwater has left the site. Even the state and EPA are careful not to make such a claim, noting that they don’t believe groundwater is “currently” leaving the property. Both acknowledge it may well have migrated off site in the past. If it was possible for the groundwater to escape to the north in the past, it is wrong to summarily dismiss the possibility that the same contamination pathway could exist now or in the future. And part of those conditions will depend on the type of cap the city constructs over the tailings pond.

The EPA has suggested that the cap over the tailings pond should meet the same requirements as a uranium tailings cap, which must be both water-resistant and designed to last several hundred years without eroding and exposing the tailings below. The city cap does not fit this description.

Others, like the School of Mines’ Ron Cohen, an expert in remediation, agree that a waterproof cap is preferable to simply putting dirt and rock over the tailings because it would prevent infiltration of rain and surface water, which, once mixed with the contamination, have the ability to migrate.

Cohen, an associate professor of environmental science and engineering, says that ideally, remediation like the one at Valmont should involve lining the tailings pond. “Back in the day, they did not line tailings ponds, and that’s not good,” he says.

According to Cohen, however, such systems cost “big bucks,” significantly more than the $5 million set aside for the Valmont cleanup.

Cohen noted that it is common practice for purchasers of known contaminated properties to conduct extensive environmental assessments before buying such land, as opposed to aftersee VALMONT BUTTE Page 18

The Colorado athletic department plans to bring 100 students down at a low cost, in an attempt to extend home-court advantage to neutral site games, which worked well in the Pac-12 tournament.

Many members of the Boulder community plan to make the trip to watch CU play in their first NCAA tournament game since 2003.

Albuquerque holds a strong basketball tradition.

The Pit arena is one of the premier college basketball venues in the nation.

Located 37 feet under the ground, The Pit holds 18,000 fans and was home to the infamous 1983 national championship game, where North Carolina State upset Houston.

rebuilding season has turned remarkable.

After their unlikely four-games-infour-days-run to the Pac-12 championship, Colorado men’s basketball heads to Albuquerque for the second round of the NCAA tournament, where they will meet the sixth-seeded University of Nevada, Las Vegas Runnin’ Rebels.

“They didn’t invite us to this party; we’re crashing it,” head coach Tad Boyle told members of the media after discovering where his team was seeded.

UNLV is coached by Dave Rice, who is in his first year in Sin City after taking over for the successful Lon Kruger.

Like Kruger, Rice employs a running style of offense, taking advantage of opponents’ misses and turnovers, exchanging them for easy buckets.

Rice is no stranger to the NCAA tournament. Last year, Rice served as associate head coach to Dave Rose at Brigham Young University The Cougars made it all the way to the Sweet 16 last year, with the help of iconic guard Jimmer Fredette.

Working in CU’s favor could be location. Albuquerque is situated at roughly a mile above sea level. The Buffs are comfortable playing in such conditions, while UNLV has struggled against teams at high altitude, losing

wards, as seems to have been the case in the city’s approach to Valmont Butte.

The city finished its environmental assessment on Sept. 18, more than a month after City Council had voted to approve the purchase of the property, and nearly two weeks after the city had closed and paid for the property. Cohen notes that “even banks would not repossess an industrial property unless an environmental audit had been done.” **** The spread of contamination from Valmont Butte, like the ultimate remediation price tag, remains a mystery.

Nevertheless, the city of Boulder’s primary concern seems to be moving ahead with its cap plan, which is primarily designed to keep prairie dogs from digging into the tailings pond.

(This despite the fact that not a single

prairie dog has ever turned up in a water well across the street from the tailings pond.)

The city’s cap plan is to throw down two feet of clean fill dirt, topped by an 18-inch layer of various-sized rocks. Joe Castro, the city’s director of facilities and fleet management, says earthen culverts will be installed to direct storm water drainage to the east.

According to Castro, Boulder’s remediation costs will be divided proportionately in this manner: 50 percent paid by the general fund, 40 percent by utilities and 10 percent by open space.

When asked where the money will be coming from, Castro says no cuts were needed.

“We’ve been saving,” he explains.

Bill Boyes, the city’s facilities maintenance program manager, told Boulder Weekly that prairie dogs in the area have already been exterminated. The rodents within the perimeter of the main tailings pond, where the contaminated material will be dumped, have been euthanized with gas, or fumitoxin.

Options to relocate the animals or donate them to a raptor program were ruled out due to a lack of volunteers, and, later, a state Division of Wildlife ruling that they were too contaminated to be removed.

When asked why the city would risk stirring up airborne contamination by digging up the lower tailings pond — and dumping it into the main tailings pond instead of simply capping both tailings ponds — Castro says it is a question of money. Due to the high cost of applying dirt and rock, he says, it is actually more cost-effective to move the material rather than apply two caps. But he offers reassurances that water trucks will be on hand to sprinkle the dirt and keep it from leaving the site as dust. **** The city decided to split the cost of the $5 million cleanup with Honeywell instead of trying to force the giant company that bought Allied Chemical to pay for the entire project. David Gehr, deputy city attorney, told Boulder Weekly that the city has not yet determined final liability for the cleanup and has instead decided, for now, to split the costs 50-50 with Honeywell (along with a $250,000 portion covered by one of the site’s former owners, Tusco), reserving the option of pursuing the matter “in an abbreviated, mini-trial process” after the remediation is complete.

Honeywell is responsible for covering all of the EPA’s site inspection costs, which came to more than $500,000.

When asked whether the adjacent property and lakes, which are owned by Xcel and have been implicated in the Allied site’s sordid history, have been complicit in any contamination on the city’s property, Gehr said Xcel was not brought into the legal action surrounding the parcel. But he acknowledged that the company’s adjacent fly-ash dumping site could be a cause of future groundwater contamination on the city’s property.

“I’ve heard people say that,” he said.

But Gehr maintained that “there’s not a groundwater issue,” in part because it can’t be determined who the contaminator is.

“There’s a lot of industrial activity in that part of town,” he said.

In that sense, Xcel’s fly ash may be a very convenient and welcome thing for Boulder Weekly

the city, if not the environment, going forward. Once again, it seems that the city’s main concern is potential liability, not making the site clean and safe.

When asked about the contaminants found in the wells of the Keeter family and others north of the site, Gehr says no correlation has been demonstrated between those results and the Valmont property.

Not exactly a comforting thought,

when you consider that the city, like the other agencies charged with protecting us, continues to refuse to drill the one monitoring well that could establish that correlation.

Maybe after they spend a few more million of our dollars on the cap, then they’ll drill that $9,000 well. And then we’ll see how they explain having to remove the cap or replace it with a

water-resistant one … for a few million more of our dollars.

oulder’s bicycle culture is thriving and lively, and we habitually capture and celebrate it in visual form and as a group.

Compare the single man polishing the chrome bumper of his car to the workshop of Community Cycles, which has now graduated 1,000 Earn-aBikers from its community workshop. There’s a shared joy in bikes, and a community built around them that emerges often as an element of “ours” rather than “mine.”

This week is a good one for bikes around town.

Boulder’s B-cycle, the nonprofit bike share program, kicks off its second season on March 16. And the Dairy Center for the Arts is hosting a month-long exhibit dedicated to celebrating bikes, complete with bike-related art and screenings of films such as Freedom Riders, which is about early singletrack trail builders, and Bicycle Dreams, which focuses on the Race Across America, a 3,000-mile bike race.

“We would lay odds that our celebration of the bicycle in art is the most immersive set of events that anyone has ever done,” says Mary Horrocks, gallery coordinator at the Dairy Center. “We’re doing it with performance art, we’re doing it with film, we painted a mural on the outside of our building, we’ve got all this visual art throughout the gallery, and I think that we’re just allowing people to come in the door and immerse themselves in everything bicycle.”

Boulder celebrates its love affair with bicycles

The performance art aspect of the exhibit will be an “instant art event” featuring artist Jimmy Descant accompanied by DJ Cola and DJ Fabreeze.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on March 17, Descant will construct a sculpture using hundreds of bike parts collected from the Boulder community. The “wild, crazy and fun” performance will pay tribute to our extensive biking community and culture, Horrocks says.

Originally from New Orleans, Descant moved to Salida in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Known as the “rocketman,” Descant produces “found

art,” often in the form of whimsical rocket ships.

“When I lived in New Orleans, I belonged to a group called the ‘Bicycle Cowboys,’ and me and my buddies all dressed up in cool vintage Western wear,” Descant says. “I would always build a new rocket-like custom cruiser bicycle, but I also lost them all in Katrina, in the flood. When I got out here to Salida, I built a custom cowboy Indian rocket bicycle with a vintage vacuum cleaner on it, and then a kid’s saddle on top of that as my seat.”

structing his pieces at live, improvisational art events around Colorado.

“What I’ve been working towards for the last few years is to be able to create something on-site, in front of people, and go with the force,” Descant says. “I relish in the live entertainment aspect.”

Horrocks hopes that the event will attract bike lovers of all kinds from around Boulder, from mountain bikers to competitive cyclists. And for those who don’t own a bike, or just want a taste of the action, Boulder B-Cycle steps in to help.

B-Cycle’s 1,170 general members and their day users pick up, ride and drop off bikes at their locations, most of which are concentrated in Boulder’s downtown business corridor. The company served more than 6,000 day users last season, says B-Cycle Executive Director Elizabeth Train.

“We’re excited to see if we can beat that this year,” Train says. “It takes a little while for a bikeshare program to catch on, and we think that our second season will be huge in terms of membership and use.”

B-Cycle will start the season with 120 bikes in 15 locations, and will open four new locations later this spring. Their ongoing partnership with Denver B-Cycle for reciprocal memberships lets members of either organization use bikes from both.

Train attributes a large part of B-Cycle’s success to its convenience and low level of commitment required.

The portion of the act that is in question states that an endangered species is a plant or animal that is “in danger of extinction in all or a significant portion of its range.” This means, for example, that if bald eagles are on the verge of extinction in Colorado, an area where the species has traditionally been found, it can be added to the endangered species list in the area until the population recovers.

Under the Obama administration’s proposed new interpretation of the act, the bald eagles in Colorado or in the entirety of the lower 48 states, for that matter, would be allowed to disappear forever because there is a healthy population of the species in Alaska.

As could have been predicted, the timber and mining industries, as well as developers everywhere, are endorsing the change as a good, common-sense solution to dealing with endangered species. One can imagine that such a change to the act will be worth considerable cash to Obama’s campaign coffers.

But it raises the question of what’s next?

New study says ‘fracking’ not the problem Even as the debate over hydraulic fracturing of gas wells heats up throughout the United States, a new study titled “Separating Fact From Fiction in Shale Gas Development” is questioning whether there is any evidence that fracking contaminates groundwater.

The study, which was conducted by the Energy Institute at The University of Texas at Austin, found little to no evidence that fracking was causing problems.

Instead, the study claims that most groundwater contamination that is occurring in the areas where gas is being produced is being caused by spills and other traditional problems associated with hydrocarbon extraction.

The study’s claim that fracking isn’t the culprit seems to contradict recent EPA findings in Pavillion, Wyo., where the agency says that fracking has, in fact, contaminated the groundwater in the area.

But if history is any indicator, watch the EPA’s Pavillion findings closely, as the agency has a history of reversing itself under political pressure brought by industry, and there is plenty of pressure currently being exerted by oil and gas producers. The EPA announced last week that it intends to reexamine its initial findings at Pavillion and delayed its process for peer review of its findings. Stay tuned.

tan Brakhage may have died in 2003, but his legacy lives on in the town in which he made his home. To this day, the spirit of the experimental filmmaking legend lives on in many ways — and in Boulder, there is no shortage of places to go and see films and speakers whose work fits in the same vein as Brakhage’s experimental spirit.

One of the programs that continues his legacy is The Brakhage Center Symposium, hosted by the University of Colorado Boulder’s film studies department. In its eighth year, the symposium brings together speakers, guest curators and filmmakers from all over the world to discuss topics related to experimental film. The topic of this year’s symposium, happening March 16-18 on the CU campus, is experimental narrative. (See calendar, page 25.)

“We know what a narrative film is, and what an experimental film is, but what is an experimental narrative?” writes Kathy Geritz, a film curator at Pacific Film Archive who is helping to curate the symposium. “The selection of films and videos presented in this year’s symposium will

present various ways filmmakers are exploring this terrain.”

One of the featured directors coming to Boulder for the weekend is Thai filmmaker Aphichatpong Weerasethakul, whose film Uncle Boonme Who Can Recall His Past Lives won the Palme d’Or at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. Weerasethakul, who will discuss his films and topics related to experimental narrative on all three nights of the symposium, is a filmmaker whose work falls into no easily definable categories and who constantly experiments with new ways of telling stories, says CU film professor and interim department chair Suranjan Ganguly.

“He leaves a lot to us,” Ganguly says.

“He gives us the context and then invites us to become part of the construction of meaning.”

“What we take away from his work is … having been a part of his personal, poetic universe. We are initiated into a way of thinking about human life, entering into a certain consciousness, discovering magical and mysterious [things] in the everyday world.”

Part of the symposium seeks to examine the roots of documentary and narrative filmmaking. Some of the weekend will be dedicated to examining the legacy of films made by early cinema pioneers Auguste and Louis Lumière, who made short, silent films starting in 1895 that showed simple scenes of everyday life — a family with a baby eating lunch, a train arriving at a station, people walking through a crowded city square — and are often hailed as the first documentary films.

Part of the examination will include a short film called “Opening the 19th Century: 1986,” made by Ken Jacobs. In the film, he puts several of the Lumière shorts through a filter to make them appear 3-D and, in doing so, blurs the line between documentary and narrative — adding, or perhaps highlighting, elements of wonder within the films that could seem dull to the modern filmmaking audience.

“In some ways, people would think [in 3-D, the films] would be more lifelike, but some would say it would appear to be more magical,” Geritz says. “It makes it fictional, more than what you would see.”

The Lumière films will be contrasted with the work of George Méliès, whose work received a glowing tribute in Martin Scorsese’s recent film Hugo.

the groundwork for narrative film, and his best-known work, “A Trip to the Moon” will be presented with live musical accompaniment from the Boulder Laptop Orchestra.

Geritz says the works of Lumière and Méliès demonstrate how since the beginning of filmmaking, works were often placed into either one category or the other — narrative or documentary. “[But] a lot of the films we’re showing make that dichotomy very complicated, show that it’s very hard to put a film in just one of those categories,” she says.

The Brakhage Cener Symposium will close with “Mothlight,” one of Brakhage’s most famous experimental films. But the word “film” might be a misnomer, since he didn’t use film, but splicing tape. He took dead moths he found in a fluorescent light casing and placed the wings, some blades of grass and some flower petals in between two pieces of mylar tape and pressed the two strips together. The five-minute film is what Brakhage described as “what a moth might see from birth to death if black were white and white were black.”

It’s a stunning example of how the ordinary (moth carcasses from a light bulb) can become extraordinary. That change of perception also happens to be one of the main themes in the work of Weerasethakul, the Thai filmmaker.

“He wants to look at the banal with new eyes … and discover the richness in life that underlies the banal,” Ganguly says of Weerasethakul.

“I wish Stan were alive today, because I think he would be very interested in Apichatpong’s work,” Ganguly says.

West Water Outlaws play the Boulder Theater on St. Patrick’s Day

moved to Los Angeles about 10 years ago and, in addition to her role in the band, is also known for a number of TV and film appearances (CSI, John From Cincinnati, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen) as an actress. Deftly sidestepping the question of whether she was an actor moonlighting as a squeezebox goddess, or the other way around, she pointed out that the Magnetic Zeros, formed in L.A. a few years ago by musician/songwriter Alex Ebert and comprising anywhere from 10 to 12 players at any given time, is as much a collective as it is a band, drawn from players who almost all have their hands in something else.

“Most of us have other interests that we love,” she says. “Christian [Letts], our guitar player, is an amazing painter. Josh [Collazo] does jazz drumming. And I think that’s one of the great things about this band. …

Everyone’s supportive of having multiple media interests, and expressing themselves through different mediums.”

The band’s sophomore

full length CD is due out in May of this year, following up on the improbable success of their infectious and shamelessly retro-evocative 2009 debut Up From Below. Kirkpatrick says it should be worth the wait.

“We recorded 40 songs [for the CD], so I think we’ll have another CD out soon with songs that didn’t make it on this. … There are a lot of different genres and lots of different ideas, but they all have kind of an over-arching sound. It’s very eclectic. There are some that are just bangers, that make you want to dance all night long, and some are almost like classical music. … So there’s a lot going on there. It’s really beautiful.”

hen the West Water Outlaws formed two years ago, their first show wasn’t ultraglamorous. The band headlined house parties in lead singer Blake Rooker’s basement, which had wall-to-wall white carpeting that, Rooker says, got completely destroyed.

“There were lyric sheets everywhere, red wine stains, guitar strings, thousands of beer bottles everywhere, random clothes and even jewelry,” says Will Buck, who plays guitar in the band.

The band has come a long way from playing in the basement and will be taking the stage at Boulder Theater this St. Patrick’s Day along with Technicolor Tone Factory.

But Buck says they’re still the same band.

“We still party, but now I guess we just get paid to do

it,” he says.

Colorado. Their personal music tastes mixed together to create a funky twist on classic rock ’n’ roll reminiscent of Muddy Waters and Jesse James and the Outlaws — the two bands that inspired their name.

“That’s probably why we sound the way we sound,” Rooker says. “Will brings reggae, I’m more heavy. Vince and Andrew bring the funk and soul, and we all like old country and classic rock. It combines to accent the music in different ways.”

Their sound was the edge that helped the band when they started out.

Buck says they were a fresh alternative to the DJ scene taking over Boulder parties.

Since then, they’ve developed a loyal fan base.

“It gave people something different to dance to,” Buck says. “People could just rock out and have a good time. By the time that we got our first gig at The Sink, people who had seen us before just mobbed The Sink. Our fans have watched us go from Blake’s basement to the Boulder Theater.”

After May, when Rooker and Ellwood are set to graduate, band members say they plan to focus on their music and are planning their third tour this July. Currently they’re working on an EP expected to be released sometime this summer.

Oakley says their sound is progressing as they get to know each other’s musical personalities. Anyone who hangs out with the band can tell how close the boys have gotten, to the point of finishing each other’s sentences.

Blake says, “It takes a while to get that connection where ...” “… you can get into each other’s head,” Oakley continues.

“And you get into each other’s playing style,” Buck finishes. “The details are all clicking together.”

The sound the band is creating is reminiscent of ’60s and ’70s rock. Oakley says it’s a central theme throughout their music, but adds that the band is constantly growing and doesn’t want to pigeon-holed.

“We have a vintage sound,” Buck says. “Some people think we’re paying homage to that old ’70s rock, but to me, I think we’re just continuing that style.”

Nowadays, acts like Lady Gaga dominate radio, but the future is looking bright for the band. The classic rock spirit still has its champions, like The Black Keys and Queens of the Stone Age. “I think there’s kind of an opportunity right now,” Oakley says.

“Because there isn’t a Led Zeppelin and there isn’t that scene anymore, we Boulder Weekly

feel that there is room for a rock band,” Buck says.

But he also realizes it’s challenging to get noticed.

“It takes a hell a lot of work and a hell of a lot of shows before you get anywhere. The music industry is tough. It’s not like you can be put on The Ed Sullivan Show and sell 90 million records the next day. Today, you can go on TV and the next day people don’t even know

you.”

The band members want their music heard, but Grammys and magazine covers aren’t high on their list of priorities.

For West Water Outlaws, it’s all about passion.

“I just don’t want to be in a cubicle,” he says. “I just want to be in a van with my best friends driving around playing music.”

Matchbox auction funds art therapy with sex-trafficked girls in Cambodia

o ahead and play with matches — that was the directive Boulder area artists got last year from Sue Chambers Wallingford, core assistant professor at Naropa’s art therapy program.

Wallingford and a team of eight Naropa art therapy grad students were looking for a creative way to engage local artists in producing artwork for an auction benefitting a nonprofit they’ve launched to help sex trafficking victims in Cambodia. On March 17, all that artwork will be unveiled at the “Small Resources = Big Possibilities” gala. The money raised will support this year’s trip, an initial training meeting with the staff of a Transitions Global respite house for girls rescued from brothels, and scholarships for future trips.

And it all started with an unintentional $50 donation.

Each Christmas, Wallingford says, her mother donates money to a charity as a present for her — but never to the charity that she would have chosen herself. So last year, she says, her mother took a different approach and gave her daughter the check to use however she wanted.

“So I carried it around in my purse for a long, long time, that $50 check, because I was like, ‘I don’t know what I’m going to use this on, it’s like a big deal, I have to spend this right,’” Wallingford says.

In the end, she spent it on 500 matchboxes.

therapy students about how to do art therapy work internationally, and the matchboxes became a fundraising tool.

Instead of donating to a nonprofit, Wallingford was starting her own.

“We really started out with $50, and we’ve raised $25,000,” she says.

“And it’s all student-initiated.”

Students worked sometimes up to 30 hours a week on the project while continuing their art therapy graduate work. They were instrumental in selecting the issue of sex trafficking and partnering with the organization Transitions Global after three of them met Pam Harvey, national director of education and advocacy at Transitions Global.

Transitions Global already employs some art therapy and Harvey says she’s seen its effects in action with the rescued girls.

“They’ll be asked to draw something and the expression is joyful, it’s hopeful, it expresses their dreams.

Many of them want to create a life that includes their family, a happy home, deep roots,” says Harvey, who recently returned from a trip to Cambodia.

“They’re very much the same as any teenage girl in the world. They have hopes and they have dreams and it all revolves around beauty, so to be able to express that and to bring those hopes and dreams to the surface... It’s healing.”

In their research on sex trafficking, they’ve run up against some scary statistics, like that one in 40 girls in south Asia will be trafficked, Wallingford says.

After the success of the matchbox parties, more than

50 Boulder artists were invited to produce work with a matchbox to be auctioned off as part of the ongoing fundraising efforts. Artists who got involved include Bruce Campbell, Ken Bernstein, Dawn Spencer Hurwitz, Dan Friedlander and Lisa Nesmith.

“People who have been traumatized in that way certainly do need some specific interventions to help them heal, and I think that art therapy is a tremendous resource for all kinds of healing processes,” Nesmith says.

“Even though we’re not going to be doing direct, intensive art therapy with the girls — we’re going to be doing more training with the staff and then more art projects with the girls — even still, I think there’s something around the idea of sustained engagement with girls who have had trauma,” says Ariana Tosatto, a second-year student in Naropa’s art therapy program who will be going on the trip to Cambodia. “Unconscious, emotional stuff just comes out for everyone in art, I think, especially when that’s the intention and space provided behind it.”

The hope is that they’ll open a door for these girls on how to use local resources to make art and leave them with skills, ideas and the feeling that they have something they can give back.

“It’s a way to help boost these girls’ sense of self because they feel so much shame,” Wallingford says.

“They’re a commodity, they’re to be sold, and they don’t feel like they have much else to give, so this will be a way for them to give a part of themselves.”

As a skill, art could also lead to making crafts that can be sold at the market, giving the girls a way to make money that has nothing to do with selling themselves.

The principle of the matchbox applies — making art, making something useful, from something that might otherwise be thrown away.

Mars wars

J

ohn Carter is based on a pulp science fiction story from the golden era of science fiction, written by a popular author who is now better known for his series of Tarzan books, a story that transplants the political tensions of early 20th century Europe to the planet Mars.

John Carter (a rugged Taylor Kitsch) is an American Civil War soldier who has deserted his regiment to quest for gold and treasure. He’s imprisoned for deserting, but is more interested in his quest than in the needs of his country, refusing to return to active duty. He escapes the brig and is mysteriously transported to Mars, where he’s smack in the middle of a war between the residents of Barsoom, as they call their planet. Because of the lower gravity, Carter finds he has amazing powers, and ends up drawn into the

situation when the beautiful Dejah Thoris, Princess of Mars (Lynn Collins), entreats him to help.

Barsoom is inhabited by many different races, including the Red Men of Zodanga and Helium, the savage Tharks and the all-powerful Therns, a group of wise and powerful men who manipulate the other races for their own ends. The war is between the Zodangans and the Heliumites, the former led by ruthless Sab Than (Dominic West) and the latter by Tardos Mors (Ciarán Hinds), King of Helium and father to Princess Dejah Thoris.

The real star of John Carter is the scenery, the alien world that Carter must figure out without understanding of the language or culture, and it’s that process of learning how things work that produces some of the most amusing scenes.

The film is reputed to have been very expensive to produce, representing a significant gamble for Disney.

It succeeds marvelously as epic sci-fi, but there are decisions the studio has made — including dropping the “of Mars” part of the title — that are hard to

understand.

Whether it’s a success could come down to marketing more than the film itself, but my recommendation is for you to go and enjoy epic sci-fi like we haven’t enjoyed on the big screen in quite a few years.

The story is ultimately about Carter finding himself and a love story between Princess Thoris and Carter. She finds him irresistible as the strange offplanet ruffian with odd ideas and extraordinary strength. It’s neither deep nor profound; this isn’t Tree of Life: Mars. Instead, it’s a movie in the sweeping action-adventure vein of Star Wars and Indiana Jones, a wondrous, joyful adventure with a number of surprise twists, including an unusually satisfying surprise ending that had theatergoers laughing and clapping at the final credits.

Revelations kill the suspense

horror movie that works cuts through analysis, shrugs off opinions and snobbery, and eschews complexity — either in technique or in budget. You know it works when the hairs on the back of your neck rise. You know it works when others in the audience — as if moved by the spirit — talk back to the screen.

Silent House was finished as Elizabeth Olsen was revealing herself as the Olsen sibling with big-screen charisma. The Martha Marcy May Marlene star and film festival darling is the “girl in jeopardy” in this “girl in jeopardy” thriller, set in a family’s creaky old lake house that they’re about to sell.

That’s really all that’s necessary — a girl, suddenly alone in a dark house in the middle of nowhere. Dad (Adam Boulder Weekly

Trese) was there.

But he went upstairs to check out a noise and disappeared. Uncle Peter (Eric Sheffer Stevens) took off with the only car. There’s no power, no phone, no “Can you hear me now?” bars. And someone, or something, is in the house with her.

Co-directors Chris Kentis and Laura Lau, remaking a Uruguayan film, establish that it’s still light outside in the real-time terror that unfolds around Sarah (Olsen). But inside the boardedup house, it’s dark. Lanterns and flashlights illuminate the spooky rooms. The filmmakers spent too much money on a fancy opening crane shot and too little on the jittery but often effective hand-

held photography that is standard practice in horror since The Blair Witch Project.

The field of vision is limited to what Sarah can see right in front of her, never more than when she must use a Polaroid flash to illuminate a pitchblack room. Music and sound effects are used sparingly, Sarah’s screams are kept to a minimum.

They give away where they’re going with this too easily — what are the men not telling her? — and test the patience of the “Don’t go in there” crowd by making Sarah mostly passive and her actions seemingly illogical. And

the movie’s third act strips away its mysteries, much to its detriment.

But those aren’t fatal failings for a movie whose terror can be read in every silent scream on Olsen’s gorgeous face, served up in more extreme close-ups than you can count.

Olsen is not playing a plucky Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween) variation here.

She plays Sarah as paralyzed, with paroxysms of fear that have her stifling screams, gulping because she keeps forgetting to breathe. That makes her the perfect surrogate for the horror movie fan, overwhelmed by what is happening, stunned into inaction by a confrontation with what could be the supernatural, and deaf — stone deaf — to the shouts of “Don’t go in there” and “Get out from under that bed” — from the audience.

Getting a grip Boulder resident Cory Richards heads to Everest to repeat 1963 American route

ot so very long ago, Cory Richards was among those climbers who considered a borrowed floor a suitable bed and scratching out a living by photographing climbers just a dream.

“It was a really odd and alarming transition from being sort of a dirtbag and living on floors and in my car and being late on rent to having a wife and a house and a career that I’ve worked for for a decade that was finally working out, not just as a photographer, but as a climber,” Richards says. “It seems like there was a rising tide or a gathering wave that finally is beginning to crest — which is really cool.”

His house in Boulder has been more a mailing address than a shelter from any storm; over the two years he’s lived here, he says he’s spent less than 11 months in town.

He’s been busy.

Last year, Richards became the first American to top an 8,000-meter peak in winter when he summited Pakistan’s Gasherbrun II with Denis Urubko and Simone Moro. The film footage he shot during that trip became the acclaimed documentary Cold, and the photos from that trip became his first National Geographic feature story. On March 18 he’ll take off for his second: an attempt at the summit of Mount Everest via the West Ridge, the route an American team completed in 1963 that has not since been repeated.

Richards will be climbing with Conrad Anker, a mountaineer who has completed first ascents in Antarctica and, in 1999, found the body of George Mallory, who famously quipped “Because it is there” when asked why he wanted to climb the world’s tallest mountain.

He disappeared with his climbing partner Andrew Irvine in 1924 during an attempt at its summit.

What we know about the West Ridge route comes from its first ascensionists, Willi Unsoeld and Thomas Hornbein of the 1963 American expedition.

The pair completed the route while another American team, Lute Jerstad and Barry Bishop, worked its way up the standard South Col route.

They don’t know the difference, and I think it’s important to educate people in the differences in the way mountains are climbed, because one speaks to a desire to exercise a creative and adventurous muscle, to figure out how to tell a story of real adventure, real exploration. And one method of climbing speaks entirely to ego and a desire to say that you’ve done something, but I’d rather fail trying to do something well than succeed doing it poorly.”

Initially, the Everest experience will share little with Richards’ time on Gasherbrun II — base camp is a more social setting, there’s more infrastructure and it’s a different time of year.

“But the climb itself, the final climb, will be pretty similar, hopefully, you know, blasting off into sort of the unknown, no people, just us,” Richards says. “Yeah, I’m excited about it.”

He’s been asked if he’ll make a film about this trip, too, and says the video camera will come along, but it’ll be the experience that determines whether there’s a movie to be made.

on really good stories and I want the story to be generated organically versus trying to build something around an experience,” he says. “The goal will be to have enough content to create something if something happens, if there is a good story that comes out of it.”

And while, yes, climbing Everest with Anker, who recruited Richards to The North Face’s team of photogra-

phers, and shooting for National Geographic does feel like a step into the big leagues, over time, Richards’ sense of what matters has evolved. What mattered at the beginning of his career, like finally getting published in Patagonia’s catalogue, isn’t the point anymore.

“I think it’s a fallacy that that recognition is actually worth something, it’s really not,” he says. “I think people

oftentimes view it as sort of a reward for their efforts, and I think that ultimately the reward for your efforts is inherent in the experience versus recognition for it.”

So perhaps we’ll just shrug off Richards’ selection by National Geographic as one of their Adventurers of the Year for 2012.

This trip is far more than a flagwaving mission, Richards says, both in

the going — this daring route without oxygen — and in what they’ll bring back: curriculum for fourth and fifth graders on climate change and how it has visibly affected Mount Everest.

This year, Montana students will follow the trip in real time and, if the curriculum goes over successfully, it will be shared nationwide.

“You’d be amazed at how much adults either misunderstand or simply have never learned or just forgot, and that level of earth sciences or that level of science literacy is super, super vital in helping everybody understand how the earth is actually changing right now,” Richards says. “Everest is a really great vehicle to tell that story just because it is adventure, it is the highest mountain in the world, it will always be Everest, so it gives you a great platform. And it’s also a place where you can actually observe the changing environment. You can see the glaciers deflating there. You can see the earth radically changing pretty much before your eyes.”

As a photojournalist, he says, it’s important to leverage his power to show people those images.

“Does climbing change anything?

Does it in and of itself create any good social change? No, not at all, it’s a totally selfish pursuit. I fly on big airplanes over the ocean many times every year and I basically put a huge carbon footprint onto the environment,” he says.

“But if I can inspire one person, not necessarily to climb mountains, but to observe nature in a certain way, to want to preserve it, then I’ve done some sort of tangible good.”

Climbing is the outlet for his demons, he says, but photography is the outlet for his need to tell stories.

His sense of himself as a climber, photographer and storyteller (and perhaps, someday, though he doesn’t yet claim it, a filmmaker) are inseparable. And his feelings toward them are similarly layered; the same task may both always and never feel like work.

“It feels like work when I’m sitting at my desk and looking at all this stuff and editing photos, and it feels like work when I’m walking around outside the tent as the sun’s going down and it’s minus 30,” he says. “But it never feels like work when I’m looking at a great image and I’m excited to have that, and see it and to share that, and it never feels like work when I’m in the mountains — walking around outside the tent as the sun’s going down.”

Small establishments hold their own against the giants

I

n a foodie town with freight engines like Frasca, Centro and The Kitchen, it is easy to get overshadowed. Yet with optimism, family support and fresh, authentic food, restaurants like Il Pastaio and Arabesque exemplify the little engine that could. Despite the odds stacked against them, the owners of both have created small, family-run restaurants that have gained a large following of admirers. “[The] restaurant business is very difficult,” says Giuseppe Oreamuno, Il Pastaio’s chef and owner, “but people [are] very nice, the customer makes you push, they motivate and support you.”

Oreamuno was born and raised in Costa Rica, but fell in love with Italian food while studying in Pisa.

He eventually left Costa Rica to, as he says, “go fly,” and began his cooking career in the U.S. He has cooked in places like Miami and Hollywood, but eventually made his way to Boulder. After 12 years, Il Pastaio is still turning out fresh

pasta and sauces to feed hordes of hungry customers, despite having no marketing strategy beyond a website and a few social networking pages.

“It is all about word of mouth,” Oreamuno says. “People love it.

People come with their own jar and say, ‘Put your sauce in my jar,’ and then they take it home and tell others.”

The walls of the pasta factory display a family art gallery of sorts, with paintings and pictures by Oreamuno and his family members. Oreamuno’s wife, Marta, who Oreamuno refers to as the “big boss,” also works at the restaurant.

Manal Jarrar, owner of Arabesque, a Mediterranean restaurant that opened in 2009, has a similar family dynamic, with her children and her husband all occasionally lending a hand.

“They help, but I am the boss here,” Jarrar says. “It is a good balance, though. With the kids, I

love Thai food, but I don’t ever cook it. The primary reason is that I happen to live in a neighborhood chock-full of amazing Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese food.

Those restaurants are all lightningfast. Plus, most of the sauces used in those dishes are pre-made and, for some reason, I find that unacceptable to do at home.

I refuse to buy something if I can make it myself. Mayo, BBQ sauce, pasta, I just can’t bring myself to make a trip to the store for them, even though it only takes about 20 minutes to drive and grab dried pasta, and it’s about an hour and a half to make it fresh, let it rest, and roll it out.

But some Asian dishes are worth the time, effort and bragging rights.

Pho is not worth the time.

After nine hours, your kitchen looks like a serial killer’s tool shed and smells like the elephant graveyard in The Lion King.

But Pad Si Ew is easy and fast. Plus, you can tell people you made it all from scratch, which isn’t entirely true, but

Soup is free for those dining in, and Keith’s wonton soup had true dumplings instead of just wrappers and a pleasant broth that wasn’t too salty. The hot and sour was a balanced affair, with pepper and vinegar playing well with one another.

Keith’s $6.95 Mongolian beef highlighted a nicely stir-fried complement of pepper and onion, and the flavorful meat had just the right measure of peppery seasoning. Both the egg roll and cream cheese wonton that came with lunch appeared to have come straight out of the fryer, each with correctly crisp texture and piping hot fillings.

I enjoyed my $7.95 Grand Marnier shrimp, although it would have been better if it hadn’t cooled off before arriving at the table. Otherwise, the seafood was surprisingly fresh-tasting given the price, and the steamed rather than fried preparation made for a healthier dish.

hile I was unable to discover the exact origins of Grand Marnier shrimp, I’d wager this dish came from Hong Kong, given this city’s love of European spirits. As most know, Grand Marnier blends orange extracts with cognac, and Hong Kong is a top global market for cognac. Hong Kong is also the home of XO sauce, a premium savory condiment named to evoke visions of the finest, extra-old cognac. XO sauce typically pairs with seafood, and given this port city’s propensity to link spirits to the ocean’s bounty, a Hong Kong origin for Grand Marnier shrimp seems plausible.

IS THERE A MIXOLOGIST IN THE HOUSE?

At the Boulder’s Best Mixologist competition on March 11, the top prize went to SALT bistro bar manager Adrian Sutevski for his cocktail of vodka, blood-orange-and-rosemary simple syrup, lime juice, agave nectar and soda.

The contest was held at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art. In its second year, Boulder’s Best Mixologist pits eight drink-makers against each other, with all participants using 303 Vodka as a common ingredient. The other competitors represented Aji, Hapa Sushi, The Kitchen, Oak at Fourteenth, The Pinyon, Riff’s Urban Fare and West End Tavern.

In related news, SALT announced that Evan Faber, the restaurant’s beverage director, recently had a cocktail included in the 2011 book The American Cocktail by Karen Foley. Faber’s drink, a twist on the classic Rattlesnake, included Colorado-made spirits Stranahan’s whiskey and Leopold Bros. absinthe.

NEXT UP: 40-OUNCE FRIDAYS

Starting March 21, Arugula and Amaro will push the boundaries of alcohol alliteration a step past two-for-Tuesdays and Thirsty Thursdays by introducing Wine Wednesdays.

DANCING IN THE AISLES

Jarrar’s marketing strategy is similar to the one at Il Pastaio — get a few people to come and love the food, and the word will spread naturally.

“Every dish matters to me,” Jarrar says. “I don’t cook anything I don’t love.

So now, everyone wants to come try it. It is like its own community. Everyone who comes loves Arabesque, and Arabesque loves everyone.”

Unlike Oreamuno, Jarrar did not have experience cooking in or owning restaurants before opening Arabesque.

Though she grew up watching her Palestinian family members cooking constantly, she never had the urge to follow in their footsteps until she became a personal chef six years ago. Then she quickly decided she wanted a restaurant.

“People think really seriously about opening a restaurant, it’s a big responsibility,” Jarrar says. “Not me. In my case it was just ‘OK! Now I am ready to open a restaurant.’ I had no idea about food or 52 March 15, 2012

restaurant industry, so I just made it have subtle, not obvious, elegance and made it the way I feel it, the way I sense it, the way I smell it. Fortunately people like it.

Sometimes it gets too busy!”

Despite the difficulties behind running a busy restaurant in a small space, the owners of Il Pastaio and Arabesque set unconventional hours to leave time for family and relaxation.

“We close on weekends because the life is too short,” Oreamuno says. “We had to enjoy it too. Just working, it’s too much. Monday through Friday works great for us.”

Jarrar only opens for breakfast and lunch, both to leave time to be with her family and because she believes lunch is the most important meal of the day.

Jarrar also keeps an optimistic attitude to help her through the lunch rush.

“Everyone has their part, and the restaurant is a stage,” she says. “It is busy, but it is just so much fun.

“I laugh a lot.”

who cares. I mean, if you’re willing to lie to them, they aren’t that important anyway.

THE RICE NOODLES:

Trust me, make these fresh.

1 cup rice flour ½ cup corn starch (or wheat starch) ½ cup tapioca starch ¼ tsp salt

Mix all ingredients and whisk in a bowl.

Run cold water slowly on the tap, and add water while whisking the batter until you achieve the consistency of crepe batter — it comes to about four cups, depending on the humidity in the room.

Steaming the batter might take some creativity. I use a large saucepan with a lid, fill it with about two inches of water, and pour the batter in an oiled circular cake pan. If you have a steamer pot, all you’ll need is a pie sheet for the batter. Remember to oil the bottom and sides of the pan you’re putting the batter into. The amount of batter you put in will decide the noodles’ final thickness. So play around with a few batches. Steam until the pancake starts to bubble off of the pan, about five minutes.

Using a rubber spatula, carefully remove the rice pancake from the pan and lay out on a cutting board to dry.

Once dry to the touch, roll it up and cut it into sections to your desired width.

Note: If the rice pancake is slimy, you aren’t cooking it long enough. Let it steam for a bit more.

THE PROTEIN:

Beef, shrimp, tofu, chicken, whatever you want for the dish, marinate in the following for 30 minutes to an hour: 2 tbsp. oyster sauce (I use vegetarian oyster sauce) 2 tbsp. light soy sauce 2 tbsp. white vinegar 1 tsp. sugar 1 clove of garlic, minced

PUTTING IT TOGETHER:

I use the handful measuring method. For every portion, it’s one egg and a handful each of protein, the vegetables and noodles.

Marinated protein (meat, tofu, etc.)

Baby bok choy Rice noodles Eggs Oil (olive, canola, doesn’t matter, really) Sweet soy sauce (you might have to go an Asian grocery for this) Any additional veggies Heat an oiled saucepan on medium high.

Crack one egg for each portion in a bowl and scramble with a fork. Add a drop of sweet soy sauce.

When the oil starts to smoke, add egg and pull edges into center, like an omelet. Once it looks mostly cooked, only a little bit of runny egg, remove from heat and set aside on a plate.

Add a bit more oil to pan and add the protein and bok choy and any additional veggies.

Add a splash of the remaining marinade and about a tablespoon of sweet soy sauce. Toss in pan for about two minutes. Add noodles and another splash of sweet soy sauce. Toss.

Chop the egg into thick chunks and add to pan. Cook for about a minute.

Enjoy.
