Highroad Is Trump’s America our America?

ho are we?

Are we the America of courage, openness, inclusion, opportunity and democratic promise — as expressed in the Declaration of Independence, the Preamble to the Constitution, Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, Roosevelt’s Four Freedoms and on the Statue of Liberty?

Or are we the America of fear, bigotry, xenophobia, intolerance and autoc-

racy — negative traits now emanating from the darkness of Donald Trump’s dystopian view of our society? It’s his mix of fearful nativism and imperiousness that’s behind his edict imposing a contemptible and chaotic ban on immigrants from seven Muslim majority nations.

The Donald and his regime of demagogic autocrats from the far-right fringe are hoping we’re the timorous America. They shout that the people voted for the fair-haired strongman and now expect him to save them from bloodthirsty terrorists sneaking into America from Muslim nations. But wait — first of all, 72 percent of us did not vote for him, with 27 percent preferring Hillary and 45 percent not voting at all.

So spare us the lie that you have a “mandate” to discriminate.

Second, if your aim really was to save us from Islamic terrorists, you missed by miles. Exactly zero

Americans have been killed in terrorists attacks here by any immigrants from those seven countries. So why them and not Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Pakistan, and Afghanistan — Muslim nations with citizens who have attacked Americans on our soil? And, by the way, isn’t it curious that Trump’s ban doesn’t include Muslim countries where he has major corporate investments?

This disgraceful, self-aggrandizing political play is just one more Trump fraud. But the good news is that the American people are rallying in mass opposition to his autocratic arrogance, revealing that his America is not our America — and vice versa.

If the implied justification for this bill’s new harsher penalty were true, it would have said “AND places another in danger...” instead of “OR places another in danger...” The bill makes the crime of messing with oil and gas equipment a class 6 felony regardless of whether or not anyone was put in danger.

And it gets worse.

The original law also states, “Any person who in any manner, without the consent of the owner or operator, knowingly alters, obstructs, interrupts, or interferes with or attempts to alter, obstruct, interrupt, or interfere with the action of any equipment used or associated with oil or gas gathering operations commits a class 2 misdemeanor.”

Again, the new bill adds the words “or places another in danger of death or serious bodily injury commits a class 6 felony.” This is particularly troubling.

By definition, any truck used to carry oil or condensate, or even any vehicle that might be used to service a well or production platform, would qualify as being “associated with oil and gas gathering operations.”

And because Sonnenberg has used the word OR instead of AND, any peaceful protestor who blocks access to a well road or slows down trucks carrying oil could become subject to 18 months in prison and a $100,000 fine.

Why not just cut off our hands?

Sonnenberg’s bill is designed to kill off peaceful protests by giving the oil and gas industry and law enforcement a giant stick. It’s clearly not about saving lives. The new bill would also allow “victims” to sue individual protestors on top of the already harsh penalties being suggested. One can only assume that oil companies are the “victims” when the road to a wellsite gets blocked by protesters.

Sonnenberg’s bill will get its first hearing on Feb. 16 in front of the Senate Agriculture, Natural Resources and Energy Committee. It just happens Sonnenberg is the committee’s chairman.

Folks need to get involved and stop this bill before it gets in front of a bunch of politicians controlled by the oil and gas industry.

orth Dakota is one of the three most conservative states in the United States, according to Gallup.

Wyoming is number one, with self-identified conservatives outnumbering self-identified liberals by 35 percentage points. In North Dakota and Mississippi, the percentage is 31 points.

Yet many progressive social and environmental activists look to an old North Dakota institution for inspiration. That’s the Bank of North Dakota (BND). It is the only publicly owned bank in the United States.

The bank provides cheap loans to farmers, college students and businesses. During the 2008 economic meltdown, the BND did quite well.

It was created as a result of a populist revolt by farmers, sick of being screwed over by predatory big banks in Minnesota’s Twin Cities, Chicago and New York. In 1915, a failed flax farmer and former Socialist Party organizer named A.C. Townley founded a movement called the Non Partisan League (NPL).

The NPLers entered the Republican primaries in a disciplined manner, holding preliminary local meetings where everybody openly discussed the issues. In 1917, three quarters of the Republicans and almost all of the Democrats in the state legislature were in the NPL caucus. By 1919, the NPL controlled the governorship and elected a U.S. congressman.

They established not only a publicly owned bank but also created socialized flour mills, grain elevators, a railroad, meatpacking houses and hail insurance.

They pushed through significant reforms such as advanced versions of workers’ compensation, income and inheritance taxes, a strong mine-safety law and limits

Public banking in North Dakota

The NPL spread throughout the Midwest and the Pacific Northwest. It even branched out into Canada where it would inspire the creation of the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), which would merge with the Canadian Labour Congress to become today’s democratic socialist New Democratic Party (NDP). It is Canada’s third largest party best known for creating a single payer health care system in the province of Saskatchewan in the early 1960s. For years, NDPers in the national parliament pushed a national single payer system which would be created in 1968 by a Liberal Party government.

The U.S. NPL wasn’t as successful as the NDP. It faced fierce attacks by the big banks, but was able to elect a governor twice during the Great Depression. Nevertheless, the NPL declined in power and merged with North Dakota’s Democratic Party in 1956. But the socialized bank and grain mill still exist.

Public banking advocates hope the successes of the BND will help their movement the way that the example of the NDP’s single payer health care system in Saskatchewan spurred the development of a national reform in Canada.

The bank is the depository for all state tax collections and fees. They plow those deposits back into the state of North Dakota in the form of loans.

This boosts agriculture and economic

development.

Ellen Brown, founder of the Public Banking Institute, argues that Americans could save $1 trillion over 10 years by financing infrastructure through publicly owned banks. She notes that the BND is funding infrastructure at 2 percent annually: “In 2015, the North Dakota legislature established a BND Infrastructure Loan Fund program that made $50 million in funds available to communities with a population of less than 2,000, and $100 million available to communities with a population greater than 2,000. These loans have a 2 percent fixed interest rate and a term of up to 30 years. The proceeds can be used for the new construction of water and treatment plants, sewer and water lines, transportation infrastructure and other infrastructure needs to support new growth in a community.”

In April 1997, a massive flood wiped out the city of Grand Forks.

There were 50,000 evacuees and the property losses were over $3.5 billion.

The BND swiftly came to the rescue with nearly $70 million in credit lines before the state received laggard Federal Emergency Management Agency reimbursements.

This bank isn’t a gambling casino but a careful institution. As BND president Eric Hardmeyer said in a 2009 Mother Jones interview: “We’re a fairly conservative lot up here in the upper Midwest and we didn’t do any subprime lending and we

He also led the majority in Citizens United which declared that money was equivalent to free speech and that there should be no limits on the amount of corporate money flowing into political campaigns. Normally reserved for CFOs and CPAs, this seems a most bizarre take on the application of “justice.” What the court really needs is a breath fresh air, not another Scalia.

The BND has a very non-political stance. Public banking advocate Matt Stannard raises some vexing questions about this on the “Cowboy on the Commons” blog. He says “BND created the infrastructure for North Dakota’s oil boom, and if the state were to commit to a truly proactive transition to renewable and clean energy (it has taken baby steps), the BND would make it happen financially — with an efficiency that would put the rest of the country to shame.”

Stannard notes something more disturbing. The BND has provided millions to fund law enforcement expenses at Standing Rock. He says “the actions illustrate the folly of pushing for state and local control without accompanying universal human and environmental rights.”

Stannard says public banking advocates “ought to emphasize the ways public control of state and municipal finance can fund new structures of work and production that neither exploit nor extract. That has always been the most powerful argument for public banks.”

On Feb. 11, there will be a conference on public banking at the First United Methodist Church, 1421 Spruce St., in Boulder from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. There is a suggested donation but no one will be turned away.

In defense of civil disobedience in Lafayette and North Dakota

Fracking does not exist to reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Fracking exists to make the maximum amount of profits for oil and gas companies.

for making money; however, they are still under pressure and often leak into the aquifer.

When fracking wells run dry or are shutdown, they have to be plugged in order to keep them from contaminating fresh water aquifers. Because many fracking companies go bankrupt, the cost of cleanup falls to the states.

Cleanup costs include: repair of roads due to wear and tear of 400 trucks hauling water and heavy equipment for each well; air, water and soil contamination cleanup; species extinction; ozone depletion; climate change and medical treatment for skyrocketing cases of asthma, cancer, immune system diseases, cognitive deficiencies, miscarriages and birth defects. Wyoming spent 11 million dollars between 1997 and 2014, to plug abandoned wells. In 2014, California ordered the emergency shutdown of fracking wells stating that fracking “poses danger to life, health, property and natural resources” because oil and gas companies had been pumping fracking fluids and other toxic waste into drinking water aquifers.

Paul Danish cheerfully advocates for the death of anti-fracking protesters by oil and gas workers who “accidently mows down a few dozen of them.” [Re: Danish Plan, Jan. 19] Cleary, Mr. Danish believes that the profits of the oil and gas industry trumps the lives of Lafayette citizens protesting fracking.

So, while the profits from fracking go to the oil and drilling companies, the costs of cleanup, adverse environmental and health consequences will be borne by the people and taxpayers of Boulder County. Considering the earthquakes, the mess, the poisoned air and water and the sick people, fracking is just not worth it to Boulder County.

Apathy will cost us our democracy

Victor Frankel was a neurologist, pyschiatrist and holocaust survivor. He wrote a book, Man’s Search for Meaning, in which he speaks of three stages of survival, the second stage is apathy. He writes of how under normal conditions seeing a young boy standing for hours at attention barefoot in the snow would elicit horror, but in the camp it barely registered a second glance. Apathy was the only way one could manage to survive in such an upside down reality.

Apathy is where we as a world have been at for too long.

Donald Trump has instituted a media black out at the EPA. We as citizens need to be allowed Boulder Weekly

to be told what is going on, we don’t have to agree, but we deserve the right to be told and make our minds up for ourselves.

A media freeze is loss of our rights, and I am in shock at the apathy. I don’t care what party you affiliate with, this is the beginning steps of a dictatorship.

We are losing our democracy hour by hour. Dictatorship is one in which a dictator has absolute rule, absolute authority in any sphere. The dictator has absolute power.

Donald Trump has started his term with executive orders. We have a Senate. We have a House of Representatives to ensure that one man is not in control. Our Founding Fathers had lived under a king and the United States was to be a democracy.

Obama used executive orders, other presidents use them, however, the difference is YEARS of attempting to work with our democratic system.

Trump is turning this democracy into a dictatorship very quickly. What will it take to get people out of apathy? What will it get to make people get out of party labels and look at what is ethical?

Boulder has declared itself a sanctuary city, Trump has threatened to target/ starve cities financially that do not enforce his isolationists mandates.

Diversity, innovation is how this country will expand/grow. NO to the wall, NO to media blackouts, NO to dictatorship. FREEDOM. I ain’t nothing, baby, if I am not free.

Yet, President Obama appointed one thousand liberal judges who ruled deportation of pro-American Iraqi and Cuban refugees legal, while barring entry to un-vetted young men from terrorist countries is illegal, all to promote diversity. Their more just society silences conservative speakers, yet does not punish rioters. Their more perfect society not only allows abortion in the ninth month but the sale of fetal body parts. Rather than change human nature it is time to return to the rule of law. Urge your senators to support constitutional judges.

Are mountain lions and bears about to be killed for the sins of the oil and gas industry?

n Dec. 14, 2016, the Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) Commission unanimously approved two separate management plans for determining the degree to which predation by mountain lions and black bears affects mule deer populations in Colorado. To do so, the Piceance Basin and Upper Arkansas River Predator Management Plans both call for the killing of these predators. The plans are to be carried out beginning sometime this spring.

Understandably, these plans have sparked controversy and strong opposition. They are largely unpopular among prominent scientists working in the field of wildlife ecology, conservationists and private citizens.

The conservation group WildEarth Guardians recentWikimedia Commons/Jeff Albright ly filed a lawsuit against CPW, the CPW Commission and the Colorado Department of Natural Resources (DNR), which oversees the CPW, challenging the plans in Denver County District Court.

While the management plans garnered support from outfitters, ranchers, farmers, hunting groups and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), those opposing the plans point to land-use development as the actual primary factor limiting mule deer populations. They argue the proliferation of residential growth and oil and gas development have cumulative impacts on the mule deer population far greater than predation, and claim that those industrial impacts have not been adequately taken into consideration.

NEWS ued to fall, but with less severity, declining by 104,200 deer.

On Aug. 10, 2012, CPW Commission received a letter from CPW staff regarding mule deer population decline.

The unsigned letter, acquired through an open records request, states that while multiple factors are likely responsible for the decline, predators like mountain lions and bears had been noted by “constituents” as being of particular concern.

CPW estimates that between 3,000-7,000 mountain lions and 17,000-20,000 black bears live in Colorado, although it’s difficult to be precise because of the predators’ solitary nature and general avoidance of people.

Black bears are the sole type of bear known to Colorado. According to The Denver Post, the last definitive sighting of a grizzly bear occurred in 1979, when a bow hunter was attacked by a female grizzly south of Pagosa Springs. He killed the grizzly by hand with an arrow.

Apparently to align with these concerns about predation impacting mule deer populations, the letter charted a course to “frame” the future management of mountain lions, bears and mule deer via the CPW Commission and CPW research.

Around the same time, Chuck Anderson, CPW mammals research section leader, had an “epiphany” as he looked at mule deer growth rate data he had been collecting since 2008 in the Piceance Basin. Befuddled by the relatively low survival rate of 0-to-6-month-old mule deer fawns, he had a hunch they were being eaten by predators, like mountain lions and bears, to the degree that it might be impacting their population

growth rates. Anderson’s hunch appears to have dovetailed with the aforementioned letter.

But two days later on Aug. 12, 2012, CPW released “The Colorado Predator Management Briefing Paper,” prepared by mammal researcher Chad Bishop and others, which states that the preponderance of evidence for mule deer population limitation in Colorado points to habitat/density dependence rather than predation.

The researchers note that even when predation is implicated as a limiting factor, predator control programs may have little effect on the abundance or population trends of prey species, such as mule deer, and may have unintended consequences on species interactions.

They also caution that such predator control plans may have costs not justified by the results, may require a disproportionate amount of resources to be effective and may not be supported by the general public.

Then in June 2014, the Keystone Policy Center, who was contracted by CPW to conduct a public outreach effort on the reasons for mule deer decline, presented their findings to the CPW Commission. Even though mule deer population had been steadily increasing since 2013, predation was once again cited, among other factors, as possibly limiting mule deer populations. This report was a critical justification for what was becoming CPW’s “mule deer strategy.”

Following Keystone’s presentation, CPW Commissioner Bill Kane cautioned against the methodology of the external stakeholder approach because it measured an interaction of multiple variables affecting mule deer populations as if they were discrete.

Kane remarked that such a model often leads to unintended consequences, where focusing on one possible factor, such as predation, can send the ecosystem “wildly out of kilter.”

path forward, working through the CPW Commission and “the science.”

He suggested CPW determine a particular area where predators might be affecting mule deer populations.

Two years later in Dec. 2016 the CPW Commission approved the Piceance Basin and Upper Arkansas River Predator Management Plans, despite mule deer population recovery.

The most recent estimate of 435,660 deer is from 2015.

According to CPW, results of the management plans could be used to inform predator harvest and management decisions in the future.

Would killing predators increase mule deer populations?

The architects of CPW’s predator management plans believe that the kill areas are ones where the deer population isn’t limited by their habitat, and therefore believe killing mountain lions and bears might improve mule deer growth and survival rates.

“It’s very rare where you have predation by itself limiting juvenile [fawn] survival,” says Joel Berger, a preeminent wildlife conservation biologist at Colorado State University (CSU) and a critic of the plan.

Berger, along with CSU colleagues Kevin Crooks and Barry Noon wrote a letter in opposition to CPW’s plans, asserting that they aren’t supported by science. Noon, professor of fish, wildlife and conservation biology at CSU, contends that CPW is showing a preference toward ungulates, such as mule deer, that isn’t justified by the current state of those species.

“What is well known is that the species in North America, and globally, in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems that are at greatest risk of loss, and have experienced the most significant population declines, are large-bodied predators,” he says.

Instead of looking at predation, the agency should be directing its research to other more relevant questions, “such as whether the mule deer populations in question are being limited by habitat quality and food limitation,” Berger says.

The CSU researchers bolster this assertion by citing a peer-reviewed study conducted by some of CPW’s own scientists, who found increasing residential and energy development within deer habitat correlated with declining mule deer recruitment rates, particularly within seasonal winter ranges.

In their lawsuit, WildEarth Guardians asserts that CPW is, in fact, unable to make a determination of

effects to the bear and mountain lion populations impacted by their plans because they are unable to accurately determine predator populations in the management areas. As such, WildEarth Guardians alleges that CPW is not adequately protecting these species or ensuring the ongoing health of their populations, and are thereby in violation of their statutory mandate and mission.

CPW is housed within the Colorado Department of Natural Resources (DNR), which is tasked with managing the water, land, wildlife, minerals, energy, geology and outdoor recreation resources in Colorado “for the benefit and enjoyment of current and future citizens and visitors.”

CPW’s predator management plans are guided by its mammalian predator management policy. Among other criteria, the policy stipulates that the agency will consider ecological relationships that will be affected by predator management plans.

However, CPW’s Anderson says the population of predators before and after suppression — killing — isn’t the focus of the study. “It’s whether or not we can reduce the predation rates on the fawns,” he says.

In an effort to do so, the combined cost of the nearly three-year Piceance Basin Predator Management Plan and the nine-year long Upper Arkansas River Predator Management Plan would be $4.6 million dollars.

Upper Arkansas River Predator Management Plan According to CPW estimates, in the Upper Arkansas Predator management area, the mule deer population increased by 20 percent between 20102015. However, according to CPW, based on survival data, the rate of mule deer population growth and survival “might partially be limited” by mountain lion predation on fawns and adult does.

CPW estimates 270 mountain lions currently live in the area, but over the nine-year management period, the kill quota would be between 316-346 mountain lions. According to CPW data, between 1994-2003, 256 mountain lions were killed in the area, or an average of 26 per year, with some years experiencing slightly higher numbers of death because of road kill and “control kills.”

As a result of the management plan, CPW hopes to gain an understanding of the effects on mule deer population demographics relative to changes in mountain lion density, as well as to determine their ability to manipulate mountain lion populations through Boulder Weekly

sport-hunting or harvest. But this will come at a cost.

CPW Wildlife Researcher Ken Logan and co-author Linda Sweanor wrote a book titled, Desert Puma: Evolutionary Ecology and Conservation of an Enduring Carnivore. Their book describes the “collateral damage” that comes with mountain lion sport-hunting.

Logan and Sweanor speak of mountain lion hunters who have told them “disastrous stories” of trailing hounds mauling mountain lion kittens to death, mistakenly identifying a female mountain lion, killing it legally, abandoning it for a larger “trophy male,” and orphaning the mother’s cubs. When they are less than nine months old, Logan and Sweanor say, such cubs usually die, and older cubs stand less of a chance of survival. They suspect that with increased hunting on mountain lions, there is also an increase in collateral damage.

Representatives from the Cougar Fund, Mountain Lion Foundation, Center for Biological Diversity, Humane Society of the U.S., Endangered Species Coalition, Wildlife Committee and Arkansas River Audubon Society noted further impacts from CPW’s plans in a letter of opposition.

These groups claim when stable adult mountain lions are removed from a population, the disruption causes social chaos in their society. The loss of adults encourages sub-adult males, naturally less skilled at hunting, to immigrate, and studies show that this influx is likely to be involved in human and livestock conflicts as well as causing increased infanticide on mountain lion kittens.

The Piceance Basin Predator Management Plan In the Piceance Basin management area, Anderson’s target is to kill 30 mountain lions and bears each year during the spring and summer.

However, he says, they might go as high as 40, killing approximately 15 mountain lions and 25 bears each year for three years. The total kill quota for the management plan would be 90-120 mountain lions and bears.

According to CPW information, most Colorado bears are active from mid-March through early November.

This is the same period of time CPW claims to have seen increased predation rates on young mule deer fawns.

According to CPW’s program narrative for predator management plans in the Piceance, between 2011–2015 bears killed 14 percent of radio-collared young fawns.

However, the management plan as proposed never accounted for the transBoulder Weekly

location of “problem” bears to the Roan Plateau in the Piceance Basin. Bears have been routinely relocated to this area for at least the last five years, according to CPW’s Velarde.

Anderson says he wasn’t even aware of the translocated bears until recently.

“There have been problem bears put up there, and who knows, that might be part of our problem,” he says.

Critics of the agency’s plans to start killing predators point to such a lack of information and communication as a major cause for concern with the CPW’s decision to move forward with the predator management plans.

Additionally, the area covered by CPW’s Piceance Basin plan has been scarred by significant oil and gas development, which continues today but was largely the result of the natural gas boom that occurred in the area between 2006-2008.

The area is a hodge-podge of mostly private lands, with some public lands held by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) while still other tracts are owned by oil and gas companies. Within the Garfield County portion of the management area, much of the land is under lease to companies like Encana Oil and Gas, Exxon, Chevron, Mobil Oil and Laramie Energy.

These natural mule deer ranges are interspersed with well pads, drilling rigs, condensate tanks, pipelines, compressor stations and countless miles of roads cut by the industry and still filled with its diesel trucks and pickups full of oil and gas workers.

CPW says it has looked at the impacts of oil and gas development, which has informed its wildlife mitigation plans, voluntary and non-regulatory agreements between the state and oil and gas companies. But CPW doesn’t have a formal tool to measure the success of these mitigation plans. Despite this reality, it deems them successful.

According to DNR Communications Director Todd Hartman, CPW consults with the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC) on wildlife issues, but does not have regulatory oversight of those activities.

CSU’s Berger notes that the state, CPW included, didn’t oppose the drilling of 15,000 new oil and gas wells in the area, despite CPW’s own research and constituents’ perception, which reflect that oil and gas development is limiting mule deer populations.

“The state has a prerogative to oppose, but it did not,” Berger says.

cy and oil and gas companies to conduct the predator-killing efforts on oil and gas company owned land.

When oil and gas boomed, mule deer populations plummeted CPW’s Anderson first gathered mule deer population data in 2008 for the Piceance Basin. Before then, the last time it was collected was in 1996. He noted that it would take a 10 percent shift in the population before he would notice it in his monitoring efforts.

According to COGCC data, statewide oil and gas drilling permits reached their peak in 2008, with 8,000 filed permits. Other big years included 2006 and 2007, with 5,900 and 6,300 permits filed respectively.

Oil and gas development was booming statewide, but particularly so in the Piceance Basin of Northwestern Colorado.

COGCC data shows drilling activity in Garfield, Mesa, Moffat and Rio Blanco counties reached its peak in 2008, with 2,061 active drilling rigs; in 2007, there were 1,562.

Colorado wildlife law violations also reached their peak statewide between 2006-2008, according to CPW data. In Garfield, Mesa, Moffat and Rio Blanco counties, there were 1,232 violations in 2006, and 1,188 violations in 2008. These violations included poaching.

Two massive, statewide drops in mule deer populations occurred between 2006-2008, the same time period oil and gas exploration and wildlife law violations were booming, both statewide and in the Piceance Basin.

Between 2006-2007, the mule deer herd studied in the Piceance Basin Predator Management Plan crashed by 26 percent, or 24,600 mule deer. Between 2007-2008, the population continued its decline, dropping another 21 percent, or 15,040 mule deer.

That is a drop in the CPW-estimated population in the Piceance Basin from 95,980 mule deer in 2006, to 56,340 in 2008 — a drop of nearly 40,000 deer in two years, or a 41 percent loss in the population.

On Oct. 2, 2006, as oil and gas drilling was increasing in the Piceance Basin, CPW issued a news release noting, among other things, an increase in poaching during winter months in low-lying areas.

Specifically, CPW emphasized oil and gas development as an additive source of poaching. “The expansion of natural gas drilling,” the release stated, “has brought increased traffic and, once again, increasing numbers of headless carcasses being found.”

Furthermore, according to CPW Chief of Wildlife Law Enforcement Bob Thompson, oil and gas booms are often associated with increased poaching.

“When you get these energy booms, you basically have these big man camps set up out in rural areas.

You have a bunch of, usually, young men that when they’re not working, they have some free time on their hands, and that’s when they go out and do this poaching.”

In a study titled, “Effects of Agricultural, Industrial, and Recreational Expansion on Frequency of Wildlife Law Violations in the Central Rocky Mountains, USA,” researchers found human popula12 February 9, 2017

tion increases in areas of oil and gas boom were correlated with increases in wildlife law violations, whereas human population booms of a recreation or agrarian nature didn’t see wildlife law violations increase.

The researchers chose Garfield, Moffat and Rio Blanco counties, as their mining study area (“mining” includes oil and gas activity), which are all within the Piceance Basin Predator Management Plan.

In one of the years studied, researchers found that when mining associated employment increased, “these changes were coupled with a 200 percent increase in wildlife law violations.”

The researchers state that the need exists to determine the extent to which wildlife law violations actually alter the size of animal populations. As such, an increase in wildlife law violations may be correlated with an increase in poaching, and potentially, a decrease in mule deer populations.

For obvious reasons, such information on poaching is critical to take into account before eliminating predators as the culprit for declining mule deer populations.

By some estimates, only 1-5 percent of poachers are caught. According to a news release issued by CPW in 2016, “Some national studies indicate that poachers kill almost as many animals as legitimate hunters do during legal seasons.” This statement is reiterated, verbatim, in similar CPW news releases in 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2015, respectively.

According to CPW deer harvest data, between 2005-2015, the average number of deer killed by hunters per year was approximately 40,000. As such, the total take of deer from the population could actually be upwards of 80,000 annually, when poaching is taken into account.

Such a number would likely have population-level impacts in certain regions already experiencing other, compensatory difficulties, such as habitat limitation from oil and gas development, for example.

It is likely the case that the cumulative oil and gas impacts on mule deer, including poaching by oil and gas workers and habitat impacts are limiting mule deer populations during times of oil and gas boom to a significant degree. But such impacts have yet to be adequately studied and accounted for.

When asked why oil and gas impacts hadn’t been included in the mule deer strategy, which forms the basis for the predator management plan, CPW’s Velarde replied that it was because the sportsmen didn’t say that oil and gas was one of the major components.

It’s hard to understand why the opinion of sportsmen seems to trump science or at least the lack thereof. But there may be a reason.

CPW’s research division is allocated a certain amount of money each year from the federal government. These funds, from The Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act, are a result of revenue generated by an excise tax on the sale of firearms and ammunition products.

According to Anderson, his CPW research group must raise, and therefore match, 25 percent of their annual allotment in license sales in order for the remaining 75 percent of federal funds to be disbursed.

License holder numbers are declining in Colorado, according to CPW’s 2015 strategic plan, but the demand for big game licenses exceeds supply, which puts the onus on CPW to increase hunting quotas to ensure their federal funding. The agency is therefore in many ways more responsive to the requests of hunters than other interest groups. As a result, Anderson says, “They maybe pay attention to those folks more than some others.”

Or put another way, the more mule deer, the more funding.

But even if funding is the goal, killing predators isn’t likely the best path forward as predator management plans aren’t likely to increase hunting quotas. A CPW fact sheet titled, “Relationships Among Mule Deer and Their Predators,” states that few studies actually demonstrate reductions in predators resulted in increased hunting opportunities.

There is also the makeup of the CPW Commission to consider as to why oil and gas impacts weren’t considered when looking at mule deer population declines on the Western Slope. CSU’s Noon noted that none of the CPW commissioners have any advanced training in wildlife or fisheries, but yet they’re charged with stewarding Colorado’s wildlife.

And Berger likened the commission to a medical board with no doctors on it, “who are then going to make decisions about policy.”

Of the 11 voting members of the commission, most are involved with farming, ranching, outfitting (hunting and fishing guiding services), water issues, resort development, renewable energy and the oil and gas industry.

Of these commission members, three have worked with or currently work for the oil and gas industry.

Commission member James Vigil’s CPW biographical information states he’s been involved as a financial analyst in the mineral development and banking industries. Don Brown’s bio says he’s been active in water conservation, energy development and technology innovation within the oil and gas industry.

Lastly, Parks and Outdoor Recreation representative Chris Castilian is a former manager of government and community relations for Anadarko Petroleum Corporation. He has a decades-long relationship with the oil and gas industry. As a lobbyist in 1996, Castilian received $4,347 from the Rocky Mountain Oil and Gas Association, the predecessor to the Colorado Petroleum Association. Again as a lobbyist in 2005, during his tenure as deputy chief of staff for Governor Bill Owens, Castilian was paid Boulder Weekly

NEWS $7,727 by the energy company Phelps Dodge, now known as Freeport McMoRan. He is reportedly now a lobbyist for his own firm, Colorado Solutions.

A fourth commissioner, John V. Howard, appointed by Governor Hickenlooper, advocates for fracking and the oil and gas industry in opinion pieces.

Simply put, it’s not a group likely to point the finger of blame for mule deer declines at the oil and gas industry.

Details of predator “removal” Regardless of the impacts of oil and gas development on mule deer populations, critics of the predator management plans also argue against the methods of killing mountain lions and bears. In the lawsuit, WildEarth Guardians alleges that the predator management plans are in violation of Colorado Amendment 14, which is intended to prohibit and make unlawful the taking of wildlife by methods including leg-hold traps and snares.

CPW notes that mountain lion and bear removal methods employed for the plans will consist of cage traps, culvert traps, foot snares and trailing hounds for capture.

“A firearm will be used for euthanasia,” according to CPW. Euthanasia, which is defined as the painless killing of a patient suffering from an incurable and painful disease or in an irreversible coma, is a misleading word in this context because CPW’s plans would engage in shooting an otherwise healthy animal in the head or vital area while they’re ensnared by one of their limbs, or treed by a pack of hounds for a purpose which has nothing to do with alleviating that animal’s suffering.

According to CPW, predator control personnel would make every effort to salvage all bear and mountain lion carcasses for disposal.

CPW’s Anderson says that all animal parts that might be profitable on the black market would be destroyed.

USDA’s Wildlife Services will be contracted $50,000 annually to assist in the killing of mountain lions and bears in the Piceance Basin area, rather than hunters. CPW is unclear whether they’ll employ them in the Upper Arkansas River area.

On April 28, 2012, The Sacramento Bee published an in-depth investigation of Wildlife Services around the country, and “found the agency’s practices to be indiscriminate, at odds with science, inhumane and sometimes illegal.”

According to the article, in 2003, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources Boulder Weekly

prosecuted a Wildlife Services trapper who had caught a golden eagle in his trap, and when he discovered it, shot it, buried it and didn’t report it.

The former agency trapper stated, “That was not the only eagle I snared while working for Wildlife Services.” He continued, “I will not say how many. But the one (my supervisor) told me to bury was the first one, and I figured that was what was supposed to be done all the time, so that is what I did.”

WildEarth Guardians staff attorney, Stuart Wilcox, remarks that the agency is secretive and not able to adapt to scientific developments. He stated at the December 2014 CPW hearing that the agency has no way of ensuring that non-target species won’t be caught by Wildlife Services predator snares or traps.

In September 2010, documents obtained through a public records request detail the killing by Wildlife Services of a wolverine in Idaho. The Wildlife Services officer was attempting to trap wolves who were supposedly threatening a rancher’s sheep. When his trap accidentally caught a wolverine, he “shot wolverine due to bad foot.”

Also according to the aforementioned investigative report by The Sacramento Bee, in 2011, a dog’s spine was crushed by a Wildlife Services trap near its family’s home in Oregon.

“We were actually told not to report dogs we killed because it would have a detrimental effect on us getting funded,” a former Wildlife Services employee said.

Wildlife Services snares, traps and/ or poison traps have also been responsible for the “non-target” deaths of bald eagles, wolves, river otters, American kestrels and among other animals, mule deer.

“We’re going to trap, too,” Anderson says.

“Independent adults will be killed, and family groups will be moved.”

He plans to dart every female mountain lion or bear they catch to make sure she’s not a lactating mother.

The young-mother mountain lions with older kittens are feeding themselves along with their kittens and Anderson says they kill more deer, so he wants to move them out for a while to give “fawns a chance to get big enough and agile enough to have a chance to evade.”

This will help him determine whether the growth rate of 0-to-6-month-old mule deer fawns is limited solely by predators, by other factors, or by a combination of factors.

He says killing mountain lions and bears is more cost effective and less time consuming than translocating, or moving them out of the area. “It makes

people feel better about doing that,” Anderson says, but it’s ultimately not as successful in terms of CPW’s management goals.

Therefore at the December hearing, CPW Counsel Tim Monahan asserted the plans are in accordance with Amendment 14, because of certain exemptions, including the bona fide scientific research exemption, the non-lethal methods of take exemption and the private lands exemption.

But WildEarth Guardians alleges that CPW’s plans do not meet these exemption requirements.

In their lawsuit, WildEarth Guardians also asserts the fact that mule deer populations have been steadily increasing, which they argue, invalidates the need for CPW’s predator management plans. According to the conservation organization, without the costly plans, CPW’s mule deer population target would be met by 2020.

Wilcox says the predator management plans are being used as a red herring to divert attention away from the actual cause limiting mule deer populations, which, he believes, is land use regulation.

Wilcox doesn’t believe CPW is willing to expend the political capital to address this, or weather the political backlash that would ensue as a result. He also argues, as a result of CPW’s approval of the predator management plan, the agency has lost and will continue to lose credibility with an increasing number of Coloradans.

While CPW continues to battle critics of the predator management plans in court, an Environmental Impact Statement is due to begin soon under the National Environmental Protection Act by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

In Late June 2016, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) released an estimate of natural gas in the Mancos Shale formation of the Piceance Basin.

It estimates there to be 66 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, which is the secondlargest assessment of potential contiguous gas resources the USGS has ever documented.

“It’s huge,” CPW’s Anderson says.

“It’s going to boom again.”

If that’s true and history is any indicator, that means mule deer populations will be under pressure again as even more of their habitat is destroyed by the oil and gas industry and poaching by industry workers increases.

Unfortunately, if nothing changes at CPW, mountain lions and bears will likely get the blame... and a death sentence.

Carousel of Happiness

T

he story of the Carousel of Happiness is the story of a young Marine, a derelict carousel, and the small mountain town of Nederland, CO. It starts in 1910 when a Looff carousel was installed at Saltair Park, outside Salt Lake City, Utah.

During its 49 years at Saltair, the carousel survived fires and wind storms. It was moved to the Utah State School where it was enjoyed by people with disabilities until 1986, when it was sold and stripped of its wooden horses.

Meanwhile, a young Marine in Vietnam, Scott Harrison, (pictured at the right) received a tiny music box that he held to his ear to balance the horror of war.

He began to dream of building a carousel in a mountain meadow. Decades later, when Scott heard of the empty, abandoned Utah carousel, he rescued it. He would spend 26 years carving animals to bring it back to life. As he finished the last of 35 animals, the community of Nederland pulled

together and raised money to build it a home.

The Carousel opened Memorial Day, 2010, with the first ride a silent memorial to veterans. A little over a year later, the Carousel awarded its 100,000th rider a special card, giving her free rides for life. The winner was a 5-yearold girl who was living in Boulder while her father was deployed in Iraq. The Carousel has become a destination for families, senior groups, organizations serving people with disabilities, parties and weddings. A local dating Website called it a perfect place for a first date.

As a non-profit organization, the Carousel relies on volunteers and donations to keep rides $1 so that everyone can experience that feeling of joy. FAMED RESEARCHER AND PIONEER DENNIS MCKENNA COMES TO BOULDER BY PRESTON BRYANT

f you were a teenager in 1967, Berkeley was the place to be. The Summer of Love was beaming with a newfound madness, and for Dennis Mckenna, it was too tempting to resist. A trip to Berkeley meant mischief and, if lucky, a psychedelic experience.

When Mckenna arrived in Berkeley, he managed to get both. After acquiring a few tabs of acid from a stranger in Tilden Park, he and his friend headed to the woods in hopes of peeking through the doors of perception. Here, their civil behavior would self-destruct to give way for a more primal, archaic wildness.

Although the experience wasn’t quite what he expected, it was revelatory for Mckenna.

Bouncing around like a little child in the open expanse of the woods and swinging from the branches of trees was, oddly enough, a clue that the ultimate answers to life could be hiding in the strange portals of the psychedelic experience.

When people hear McKenna’s name, they usually associate it with his older brother, Terrence. Renown for being “the intellectual’s Timothy Leary,” Terrence was a spokesman and advocate for psychedelics for many years, known as somewhat of an articulate rebel. His hypnotizing talks and poetic revelations swayed audiences of all kinds. However, though not in the spotlight like Terrence, McKenna has co-authored many books with him. He is also one of the founding directors of the Heffter Research Institute, a nonprofit organization investigating the therapeutic uses of psychedelic substances.

In his book, The Brothers Of The Screaming Abyss, Mckenna describes himself as a “big picture kind of guy.” Born in Paonia, Colorado, in 1950, at a young age, Dennis was not interested in the sort of questions that didn’t lead to an ultimate understanding of reality. While his peers were playing outside, he was reading Scientific American and taking notes on the Encyclopedia Brittanica in the local library. This sort of intellectual passion, along with his experiences on acid in Berkeley, eventually led Mckenna into the Amazonian jungle, where he’d test the limits of his own consciousness by experimenting with heavy doses of magic mushrooms and the Amazonian plant mixture, ayahuasca. After making this dive into the unknown, he has come back to share some of his wisdom.

Although psychedelic drugs are still categorized in Schedule 1 of the Drug Enforcement Agency’s illegal substances, Mckenna says that they are still being widely used in secret.

“In our society at the moment, these drugs are finding their way back into society primarily along two channels: One is religious practice and the other is medical practice,” he says.

Some religious groups are actually permitted to use these substances legally.

According to McKenna, society is in the midst of a psychedelic renaissance.

According to a recent study out of Johns Hopkins University and New York University, psilocybin — the active ingredient found in magic mushrooms — has been shown to radically improve the positivity of people who are terminally ill with cancer. New research from Johns Hopkins and the University of Alabama also suggests that people who have a history of taking psychedelic drugs are less prone to have suicidal thoughts and are more psychologically healthy.

But psychedelics still hold the stigma of the ’60s drug culture. Although a lot of great research with psychedelics was done in that time, it threatened the social order, McKenna says. As a result, the substances were unfairly banned.

“All of these things in the ’60s were pretty much prohibited in a very ill-considered way,” he says. “It was like lumping everything together and saying they’re all bad; they all cause altered states we don’t like. But of course prohibition doesn’t solve anything. They just went underground.”

After nearly 50 years, Mckenna thinks that we are only now discovering the benefits and uses of these substances.

“Here we are, almost coming to, say, 2020. That’ll be 50 years. We have only now figured out how to use them,” he says.

One of the hallucinogenic plants to praise for the psychedelic comeback is McKenna’s self-proclaimed plant teacher, ayahuasca. This indigenous Amazonian plant, known for its hallucinogenic and healing properties, is seeing increased popularity around the world. According to Mckenna, the widespread use of substances like these is a good thing because it will evolve consciousness at a more rapid rate.

“There are all kinds of communities now that are spontaneously appearing in the most unlikely places,” he says. “I think as people discover these plants, the plants themselves become a catalyst for this evolution of consciousness.”

As we approach another turning point in American history, Mckenna continues to advocate psychedelics, as they provide a constant reminder that we aren’t the ones in control.

“The big message from me is, with ayahuasca particularly: ‘Remember you monkeys are not running this show,’” he says. “We are not running this show. The plants, in fact, are running the show. And this is a good thing for us, because they are what is keeping life sustainable through photosynthesis.”

For McKenna, psychedelics are no longer simply a catalysts for the counterculture consciousness. The substances are beginning to be accepted as medicines to heal the afflictions of the mind, and tools to discover the ineffable worlds that the mystics and ancient shamans have long been exploiting.

T

here’s a saying, erroneously attributed to Horace Greeley, that posits the West as the land of all opportunity and good things, a place of beauty and freedom, where wealth comes easily with a bit of gumption and hard work. But while the origins of “head west, young man” are shrouded in mystery and unlikely to have been uttered by Greeley, it’s a piece of advice that Jeff Robertson took to heart.

If you’re going to head west from Maine, it’s likely that at some point you’ll end up in Colorado. And if you keep heading west, you’ll cross the empty, rugged spaces of Nevada and run up against the Pacific. And farther west still, you’ll perhaps find yourself in Japan.

And it’s here, in a small ski area near a small town called Furano, that I find myself following Jeff Robertson, a former Boulder resident and University of Colorado grad, through a perfectly spaced forest of white birch as we ski knee-deep powder down an untouched face.

Robertson has fetched up in Japan because he’s been heading west all his life. Colorado was supposed to be the end of the line, a place to put down roots and to raise a family, but it didn’t exactly turn out that way for the CU graduate (class of 2004) and fanatic skier who came to the Centennial State for the snow, but continued on, across the Pacific Ocean to a place

“It was the snow that took me out of Maine,” Robertson admits of the journey that led him to Boulder, but then even farther afield to the Land of the Rising Sun. “I got introduced to skiing from a family member when I was young and something just clicked inside of me.”

Inspired by an advertisement in the back of seminal skiing title Powder Magazine, Robertson made the move west with some skiing buddies. The ad, for Colorado Mountain College (CMC), took them to Steamboat, where he took classes in the school’s ski business management program and chased powder days before transferring to CU to continue his business studies after obtaining an associate degree from CMC. It was a move that would transform his life.

“It was awesome,” recalls Robertson of his relocation to the Front Range, and his enrollment in CU in the fall of 1999. “It was an incredible learning experience and it opened up the door to a whole new world.”

One key to this was that Boulder at the time was — like today — an epicenter of the ski industry. The town, home to top-tier ski industry media brands such as Warren Miller Productions, Ski and Skiing magazines, also harbored a wide variety of other com-

One of these was Fate Clothing. While Fate is now defunct, at the time it was one of the first outerwear brands to embrace mogul and freestyle skiing and also one of the first to design and market freeride-specific outerwear. Robertson started working for the company and thrived.

“I think a big part [of who I am now] was being around all the athletes, and the industry,” says Robertson of Boulder’s profound influence on his life.

“The kids on the freestyle team or on the U.S. Ski Team that I had met in Steamboat were all going to CU and with the industry being as strong as it was in Boulder, and with all the ski magazines being there, it was a great launch platform for me as an athlete and also to get involved in the culture and the action see FAR EAST Page 22

sports industry. The university’s proximity to the mountains is a huge draw for people who have passion for skiing and the outdoors. It’s a great place be in the epicenter of things and also to get a great education.”

But despite his success in Colorado — he was a sponsored pro skier and was getting his photos in the same magazines (including Powder) that inspired his westward trek from Maine, Robertson was restless. He wanted more snow, he wanted better snow and so he kept on heading west, looking for the Holy Grail of deep powder and without people.

• • • • “No one is here,” Robertson smirks as we pull into the empty parking lot of Tomamu ski area on the Japanese island of Hokkaido. “And it’s a Sunday — you won’t find this back in Colorado!” It is indeed empty. It’s also an unusual sunny day. The mountains around Furano, where Robertson will spend five weeks this winter as a transplant, don’t see a lot of sun. But they do see a lot of snow. And it’s snow, particularly the untracked variety coveted by skiers and snowboarders, that we’re looking for.

The ride up Tomamu’s gondola seems promising. The last storm has left a sparkling coating of the precious white stuff across the steeply gladed slopes of the mountain. There are some tracks that dance through the trees, but most of the skiers here, as elsewhere in Japan, are following the groomed runs that drop through the forest below us.

But Robertson, and the rest of the group we’re with — a couple of guys from the Lake Tahoe region and a ski instructor who teaches at Oregon’s Mt. Hood Meadows ski area — aren’t interested in the in-bounds fluff. We climb up over a small ridge at the top of the ski area and are greeted by an empty bowl with perfectly spaced trees and no tracks at all. Here, on the north side of the mountain, the snow is even deeper, cold dry fluff that looks straight from the innards of that snow globe you played with as a kid.

The guys from Tahoe and the Oregonian are Robertson’s clients. His company, Le Grand Adventure Tours, hosts visitors from all over the world in Furano, and these are just the latest to be lured by the rumors of the best snow on the planet.

ers and snowboarders. Based out of Furano, Le Grand focuses on backcountry skiing and riding, with the use of splitboards or alpine touring skis to maximize the opportunity to ski powder. Meals and accommodations are organized in traditional Japanese guesthouses and restaurants, most of which are family owned and operated, with a focus on experiencing authentic Japanese culture.

For Robertson, the company is more than a way to fund his Japanese powder addiction. It’s a way to share the nirvana he’s found in Japan, a landscape of surprisingly steep mountains, magical forests and, according to him, the best place in the world to ski and snowboard.

“The quality and the frequency of the storms that come in here make it the best,” Robertson says. “I have been fortunate to ski places like Steamboat and Utah and Europe and places that claim to have abundant and high quality snow. But Japan sets the bar to a whole new level. You have the champagne powder of Steamboat and Utah, but you have amazingly consistent snowfall, sometimes it snows for weeks at a time. Any skier or snowboarder after their first trip to Japan would put this at the top of the list of places to go.”

But while the snow is excellent, and while we’ll rarely cross another track during our runs down the backside of Tomamu, there’s something deeper at work for Robertson. Something that marks the maturation of the kid who headed west to ski, and who kept heading west, seeking deeper snow and less crowds.

“I think for me the attraction to Japan is not only the skiing and the quality and abundance of the snow but also the culture, the history and the people of the country,” he admits. “When I started Le Grand it was a big part of what I wanted to incorporate into our tours. Not just sport, but culture and people and immersing clients into the areas that we travel in. The people here are so open and so kind, that it gives people an opportunity that they don’t have many other places.

“You can go to Colorado or to France or Switzerland and you will meet incredible people, but it’s a different kind of hospitality that you find in Japan. They want you to experience and embrace local traditions and their culture and to explore their mountains.

“Here it is very relaxed,” he adds. “The local people have stepped back and they realize how precious life and their time is and they want to make the most of it, and they try to share that with people who come into the valley. As soon as you come into the valley you feel very comfortable. A weight is lifted.”

In fact, he says, “I can see myself moving here for good.”

to a collage of happy yet slightly ironic signs, to a surrealist drawing that deals with momentum.

The only common trait of every contribution is an artist statement. Each work is accompanied by a note from its creator detailing their own personal struggle and what role art played in their recovery. The stories are rich and varied, including someone who uses art to help deal with their Parkinson’s disease and someone else who uses it to combat negative feelings from past sexual abuse.

“When people go to art shows, they don’t know the artist, they don’t know what’s going on, it has no meaning,” Hamers says. “[In Art as Medicine], it’s not just about the art, it’s about the artist. The artist is almost more important than the art. The process is more important than the end product.”

Some of the most striking contributions in the show are three small sculptures titled, “Grief,” “Depression” and “Anguish” from Paula Peacock. Using burlap, thread and wire, her sculptures depict figures writhing in pain — one curled in the fetal position, another on its knees, the third hunched over its knees — each figure bound, unable to move. They speak to the viewer on a primitive level, touching the darkest depths of pain. Upon reading her statement, the viewer discovers more layers, learning that Peacock created the figures after the murder of her son Christopher.

Peacock is a self-taught painter, calling herself a late bloomer because she started in her 40s. She also teaches art classes at Soft Voices, a drop-in center for adults with mental illness. Creatively dormant for a year after her son’s death, Peacock says she had been going through the motions for her classes, feeling frozen in terms of her personal work. That is, until she started crafting sculptures for a class she was planning.

“I would start a [framework] unconsciously,” she says. “I’d pose it into a different position and afterwards I realized, oh wow, that looks like I’m grieving, or oh wow, that looks like I have a wall up around me.”

As the sculptures poured out of her, she says they were painful to make but ultimately cathartic.

“After the completion of each one, I just felt a little bit better,” she says. “They just helped me work through the grief. ... And each one helps. It takes me a step closer to hopefully someday being myself again.”

In addition to grief and addiction recovery, the exhibit also features expressions of physical rehabilitation, like the work of sculptor Grace Gee Ajemian. Three years ago, Ajemian went into septic shock, an infection that causes organ failure and has a low survival rate. She went on life support for a week and stayed in the hospital for more than a month.

In the show, she displays “Healing Grace,” a collection of thread sculptures including a heart, lungs, stomach, intestines, brain and liver all organs affected by her illness. Every piece has a forceful presence, commenting on the duality of these body parts.

“I wanted to echo that strength and resiliency, and yet how they’re fragile and delicate,” Ajemian says.

Moreover, each deals with an emotion she was trying to reconcile. As it says in her statement, Ajemian used Chinese medicine techniques, which attach certain emotions to an organ: The heart deals with joy, the lungs grief, the kidneys fear, and so on. As she sculpted an organ, she dealt with that emotion, working intuitively, not following a logical order but following what needed attention in the moment. She calls the process healing and gratifying, and it also let her take the power back as illness ravished her body.

Throughout the exhibit, there’s a question of cognizance: Do the pieces deliberately relate to the steps of recovery or are they consequential of recovery? Every artist has a different answer. Hamers might say both, while Peacock says it spilled Boulder Weekly

from her subconscious. For Ajemian, it was intentional.

“Working with different issues is a way to bring consciousness to the issue,” she says. “It’s very conscious for me and it’s very healing for me because it’s a safe place to explore that.”

Art provides a space to tackle intimidating notions. It can also be used for reawakening. This past December Hamers celebrated four years of sobriety. He says art played a major role in kindling his passion for life.

“I feel like I was on one edge of the universe, and I woke up the next day and I was on a completely opposite edge,” Hamers says.

When making commercial art, he says he realized he was building other people’s dreams, not his own.

Reconciling years of denying his self expression, art became his tool.

“I found myself. I fell in love with the world again and with myself, all at the same time,” he says, wiping a tear from his eye. “It was like a rebirth. It was like being born again into a more beautiful place.”

The power of the show lies not only in the diversity of experience, but the commonality of emotion. While someone might not relate to Hamer’s path to sobriety or Ajemian’s physical trauma, their work may still touch a nerve for those who have known the pain of other wounds.

“Whatever it happens to be, these emotions are universal,” Ajemian says.

“This whole exhibit is about how we use art to get to those emotions and how we use art to heal them. It doesn’t matter what the source of them is, it’s that we all get to them in a different way.”

While every art show is personal, the artists in Art in Medicine intentionally detail their journeys for the viewer, giving insight into their struggles through their work and their artist statements. The veil of anonymity gets lifted, and what we’re left with is an exhibit that celebrates resilience in the wake of tragedy.

“Any time an artist creates, they’re baring their soul for everyone to see,” Peacock says. “And every artist in this exhibit, they’re not only baring their soul for everyone to see, they’re opening up another aspect, not only of the soul, but of an injured and more fragile part of them. And for me that’s a brave thing to do. There’s a lot of emotion on those walls.”

While Peacock’s burlap sculptures came from a place of sorrow, she calls them her little saviors in her time of need.

“Art was the only thing that has kept me going,” Peacock says. “I found a purpose again.”

were last here in November, at the Oriental), Castro and the Painkillers head up an all-star benefit for Blue Star Connection, a charitable organization started in 1995 by local blues enthusiast John Catt, that provides musical instruments for seriously ill kids. Castro has been involved with the charity for a number of years.

“John is a friend and a promoter we’ve worked with over the years; it’s his baby. I’ve just always thought it was a great idea, and a cool thing to do.

“One time I got to go with him to deliver a guitar, meet up with a young kid and her mom at a music store, and pick out a guitar and pay for it. It was just so cool.

“And an interesting development recently; there’s an oil man down in Texas who’s been a supporter of the Blue Star, who just sold his company, made a lot of money and just made a sizeable donation to the charity, which will keep them in guitars for awhile,” Castro adds with a laugh.

For Castro, it’s more than a simple piety that playing blues for a living is a personal vocation. With the exception of a few high-profile legends and flashy big-stage/big-production stars, it’s a tough business to turn a reliable nickel on. You can’t package it into a laptop, and your fans always have that defiant instinct for trend-chasing jive.

But he’d be the first to shrug off the mantle of blues icon.

“I’m just going from day to day, doin’ what I do,” Castro says. “I play guitar and sing, and I basically run a small business. I have a band, we go out and play in all different situations; big festivals, small clubs, and in order to keep it going, we have to put out a record every once in a while. It’s just what you gotta do.

“It’s all part of my job, essentially.

And I’m just very fortunate that I happen to love my work.”

Castro’s got a joke about that, actually.

“Did you hear the one about the blues musician? He got in it for the money.”

Yep, he sure did.

Hand in hand Local art combines with local beer at neighborhood breweries

hile sipping your favorite craft brew, you might have noticed artwork adorning the walls at many local breweries. It seems as though these two creative worlds, brewers and artists, are collaborating to gratify palate as well as sight.

“Brewers are artists themselves using a palette of hops, malts and other yummy Courtesy of Amanda Willshire ingredients to create their masterpieces,” artist Amanda Willshire says.

“Since most of their time is spent perfecting their own craft, they look to visual and performance artists to bring something special to complement their space.”

Willshire creates sculptures out of recycled beer bottle caps that local businesses and friends put aside for her. Her work, from bottle cap Colorado flags to brewery logos to bicycles and animals, are often featured in breweries in Boulder and across the Front Range. She says she’s met a lot of great people from displaying her artwork at several local breweries, including Vindication, Upslope, Twisted Pine, Great Divide, and Odell, to name a few.

She says having cool artwork to look at and talk about while enjoying beer enhances the experience even more. “It’s such a fun environment and folks are happy and relaxed and Boulder Weekly

love talking about the art,” she says.

Jesse Crock is another Colorado-based artist whose acrylic paintings are often featured in breweries around the state.

Known for “painting the Colorado experience,” the elementary school art teacher says he got his “big break” with Eddyline Brewery in Buena Vista. In addition to his art displaying at the brewery, his paintings are featured on their Pumpkin, Raspberry, and Red Chile beer labels and he painted the mural inside their tap room. He’s also done a large mural on the north wall of Mountain Toad Brewery, in his hometown of Golden.

He feels breweries also have something to gain from displaying art.

“Just like a café or a coffee shop, it’s a place where people can gather and hang out, and the owners get to have the benefit of works on the wall,” he says.

One brewery he enjoys working with is Odyssey Beerwerks, in Arvada, which is displaying his artwork throughout the end of the year. Taproom Manager Jeremy Sisco opts to hang local artwork at the brewery because he believes artwork and beer go hand in hand.

art,” he says. “Brewing may be more scientific, but without a creative mind neither would be very good.”

Sisco says that choosing the right artwork for the brewery can be a bit of a challenge.

“Sometimes patrons question my sanity when we have an artist showcase that doesn’t fit what they like,” he explains. “But we believe that art is doing its job if it sparks conversation.”

He understands that just like certain beer styles, not all art is going to appeal to everyone, so he keeps an open mind and tries to pick artists that will interest brewery-goers. Changing the artwork every month, or on a rare occasion after two months, gives more opportunities to area artists outside of gallery setting. And it gives patrons a reason to keep coming back.

Sisco says there is always an excitement at the beginning of each month as people anticipate the new art that’s going to be unveiled at the brewery. He says the goal is to have the taproom feel like an extension of their home.

“We want it to be warm and inviting, so seeing the interest they have in walking around to all the new pieces at the beginning of the month is really cool,” he says.

That same motivation is fueling many more breweries to feature local art work, including Wibby Brewing. Ted Risk, director of business operations at the Longmont brewery, says including artwork in the brewery for people to enjoy is a natural fit.

“We love taking the opportunity to showcase local art work from creative people that are a part of the community,” Risk says.

They’ve worked with a variety of independent artists, including a favorite, Matt Gutshall, who uses a variety of media including glass mosaics and acrylic paint, among others.

All of the artwork is switched out the last Friday of each month. What goes up next is up to the Left Hand Artist Group, led by Donald Wilson. The group is a collection of artists, musicians, poets and comedians who join together to share their talents. They connect artists with local businesses, such as Wibby Brewing and Left Hand Brewing, to display their art and share it with the community. Brewery patrons often strike up a conversation about the group itself and the artistic culture they’re helping to create around them. Risk says while the group handles the artwork, they know what fits well with the

S

hel Silverstein once asked, poetically, “How many slams in an old screen door?” The answer, he said, “Depends how loud you shut it.”

The screen door at Lyons Fork has shut many times, presumably at a variety of velocities and decibels, though I can’t vouch it’s the same screen door. The sandstone building at 450 Main St., right at the fork of highways 36 and 7 where the North and South St. Vrain River converge, was built in 1881, just one year after the Town of Lyons was founded.

(That same sandstone was used in architecture around Colorado, famously at University of Colorado Boulder, and shipped as far as Chicago and New York.)

Standing in front of the one-story building — its classic Western architecture complemented by a couple of brushy shrubs, the only two windows right up front, that screen door opening to the distressed blue of a wooden door — it’s easy to believe that 450 Main St. was originally a watering hole known as The McAllister Saloon.

How many slams in an old screen door?

Lyons Fork leans into heritage

The building has housed many businesses since: a brewery, a butcher shop, a mercantile, a pool hall and, since the 1960s, a number of restaurants. Its current incarnation as Lyons Fork embodies all this history — of its former businesses, of the Town of Lyons and of the Western U.S. in general.

Inside, Spanish-inspired décor gives colorful contrast to the subdued brown of the exterior. A candy apple red ceiling gives way to burnt orange and buttercream yellow accent walls covered in local art, while door frames, booths and shelves cool things down even more in shades of blue, green and deep purple, all the way down to the gleaming hardwood floors, which are reflecting the glow of twinkling strings of Christmas lights above the bar.

The effect is inviting, to say the least, particularly sitting beside one of those two windows late on a Sunday morning with the sun spilling over a hot cup of coffee... and a good margarita.

It seems only right, at such a historic Colorado landmark, to eat a meal equally steeped in Centennial State culture: the Fork’s chile Colorado.

If there’s one food that sums up Colorado, it’s pork chile verde. You can ask a dozen people for a recipe and you’ll get a dozen variations, but it always goes a little something like this: roasted green chiles (the subtle heat of Anaheims are a go-to

complement for eggs, which we’ll get to in a minute), slow-cooked pork (shoulder, loin, chops — your pick), chicken stock, cumin, garlic, onions, cilantro, salt, pepper and, the star of the show, tomatillos.

The Fork doesn’t deviate from tried and true perfection. They top their tart and savory verde, filled with tender chunks of pork, with two eggs, a dollop of sour cream and a hunk of melt-in-your-mouth cornbread.

It’s about as Colorado as you can get.

The Fork leans into their heritage — they treasure it — and you can tell from the painstaking detail they’ve put into everything, from the atmosphere to the food.

I don’t want to question Shel Silverstein’s logic about the lifespan of a screen door, but I’d like to offer an alternative answer (not to be confused with an alternative fact): How many slams in an old screen door might just depend on how much you treasure it.

Local artisans are creating great cured meats, from culatello to lardo

T

he word of the moment on menus seems to be “salumi.” You see it among the starters, appetizers, small plates and tapas at local restaurants ranging from Frasca to the Roadhouse Boulder Depot, and on the shelves at stores from Cured to King Soopers.

A lot of us grew up on salumi but didn’t know it at the time. As the son of a first generation Sicilian-American and an immigrant Austrian-American, I grew up loving “cold cuts.” That meant sweet or hot capocollo — we pronounced it “kappa coal” — as well as tart summer sausage thinly sliced on sandwiches along with cooked, smoked and pickled meats like ham, roast beef and corned beef. Then

there was the great mystery sausage, pepperoni.

“Salumi” is not the plural of “salami,” but rather raw meat’s leap to immortality and includes all manner of cured, dried and preserved meats, mostly pork, beef, lamb and game. Salami is ground meat, fat and spices dry cured in a casing and aged from weeks to months that turns raw meat into a range of flavors and textures. Salami is a moldmade fermented food, like cheese, beer, yogurt and kombucha.

Some salumi is made from whole muscles — things like prosciutto and bresaola. The French word charcuterie includes many of the same items as salumi along with tasty cooked treats like fresh sausages, confit, pâté and rillettes.

The salumi boom goes hand-in-hoof with the rise in artisan, nose-to-tail butchers and the need for the sustainable use of whole animals, not just the tender parts. It see NIBBLES Page 44

means rediscovering all the ancient ways of preserving meat used across the globe and before refrigeration.

American salumi — like American bread, beer and cheese — took a while to rise to the quality of the imports but almost every supermarket in the Boulder area now carries top-notch salumi by Creminelli (Utah), Fra’ Mani (California), La Quercia (Iowa), Salumeria Biellese (New York) and many other U.S. producers.

Colorado is for local salami lovers

Colorado is home to salumi makers in restaurants and shops using mainly meat raised in this state. Chef Hosea Rosenberg’s Blackbelly Market (blackbelly.com) is the only restaurant in Boulder licensed to make dry-aged salami (like Spanish chorizo and nduja) and whole cured meats like coppa. The artisan butcher shop also produces fresh sausages and charcuterie.

North Denver’s Il Porcellino Salumi (ilporcellinodenver.com) is a butcher shop, eatery and salumi enterprise that just won two 2017 Good Food “Oscars.” Bill Miner’s brainchild produces the state’s widest variety of preserved meats including mortadella, bison pastrami, head cheese, scrapple, salamis including cacciatore, plus culatello and hams.

Chef Justin Brunson has championed sustainable whole-animal butchery for years at his Denver establishments including Old Major and Culture Meat & Cheese. His curing room is producing coppa and other many other preserved meats. Old Major (oldmajordenver.com) features Nose to Tail, a dish including sausage, confit belly, crispy ears and pork shoulder ragù.

Chef Frank Bonanno oversees a

small empire of eateries but his passion is for artisan food-crafting. In a basement kitchen under Denver’s Salt & Grinder restaurant he makes coppa, bresaola, culatello, guanciale and sometimes salami to serve upstairs and at Osteria Marco and Luca d’Italia.

Denver’s recently opened, wholesale-only Elevation Artisan Meats (elevationmeats.com) has started producing artisan salumi including fennel pollen salami, Spanish-style chorizo and Mexican mole salami.

Knowing your culatello from your lardo

There are hundreds of varieties of salumi. Here are just some available in Boulder and Colorado.

Bresaola: (bres-so-luh) Seasoned, air-cured whole muscle beef called carne de sol in Brazil, bindenfleisch in Switzerland and its first cousin, Native American bison jerky.

Chorizo: (cho-ree-zo) A fermented, air-cured sausage made in Spain and Portugal flavored with smoked paprika and garlic. Mexican chorizo is a fresh sausage that requires cooking.

Coppa: (koe-puh) Also called capocollo (kap-ah-kole-uh) and, on The Sopranos, gah-ba-gool. It is pork equivalent of bresaola made in two varieties, hot and sweet.

Culatello: (coo-lah-tell-uh) Made from a single pork muscle, rubbed with red wine and salt, dry-aged for three to 12 months.

Guanciale: (gwan-tshee-ahl-lee) Salted, air-dried, seasoned pork cheek and jowl meat similar to un-smoked bacon but with a chewier texture and a pork-ier flavor.

Nduja: (En-doo-ja) An addictive, spreadable form of salami.

Prosciutto: It’s Italian for ham, but it has come to mean the best salted and

cured ham from Parma. Several U.S. producers are selling great, less expensive prosciutto, including La Quercia.

Salami: Genoa salami is your regular cured (fermented), round pork and beef salami and comes in a thousand varieties. Sopressatta (so-press-saht-tah) is a salami laced with garlic and peppers with flat sides. This is what pepperoni would like to be when it grows up.

Boulder’s freshly relaunched Arugula Restaurant has a new menu of Mediterranean comfort food favorites I got to taste at a benefit event.

My favorite was the thick and nearly perfect Bolognese sauce made with bison, beef and pork, minced carrots and onions and pecorino cheese with orecchiette pasta or “little ears.” It hits every note of my personal yumminess rating system. Other hard-to-resist dishes include arancini (fried mushroom and fontina risotto balls); pear and gorgonzola gnocchi; and mussels with perfect frites.

drink Tour de brew: Mountain Sun’s Stout Month part 2 The house [stout] always wins

A

s we discussed last week, Mountain Sun’s Stout Month — a month-long celebration of the dark arts — is a Boulder institution at it’s finest. But as a trip to Southern Sun this past Saturday proved, you knew that all along.

Apparently doing something for 24 years helps build a following and by judging the scarcity of bar top real estate to be found, Stout Month has quite the following.

The beauty of this uptick in patronage is the Stout Month devotees (Stouties?) who come out in droves to engage with total strangers about malt, milk sugar and alcohol strength. But unlike politics and religion, Stouties are just as interested in your opinion as well. On a recent voyage through the throngs of thirsty patrons at Southern Sun, my barstool neighbor took interest in the long line of tasters in front of me and enlisted my expertise.

“What’s your poison?” he asks.

“Straight Stout,” I reply, taking another sip of the classic Dry Irish stout that sports a 5.6% ABV. Formerly known as the Old School Stout, Mountain Sun’s Straight Stout is smooth with a light nose and almost imperceptible alcohol, a damn Susan France ON fine beverage under any cirTAP: cumstance.

One erudite gentleman, three pints in, described the Dark Harvest Pumpkin Stout as “plenty.” When I finally got my lips on the brew, I had to concur. Dark Harvest (7.5%) is brewed with over 150 pounds of fresh pie pumpkins and six spices. No pumpkin beer has ever tasted this good or this potent. The nose is loaded with cinnamon while the body is straight cream. It’s like biting into Thanksgiving dessert. Plenty indeed.

• • • • As good as the Straight Stout and the Dark Harvest are, they’re merely warm-ups for the NIHILIST Russian Imperial Stout (10.1%), a beer that shouldn’t be drunk with dessert but a beer that should be drunk as dessert. The NIHILIST is dark as night with almost no rim variation, meaning this beast of a stout is as consistent as a Siberian winter. The taste is a chewy concoction of fruit and chocolate, but the key to the beer’s royalty is its balance of alcohol and flavor.

There were others — there always are — and there will be more: Coconut Cream Stout (6.3%), Fuff ’s Travels S’mores Stout (6%), Megatron Imperial Stout (10.7%) and the perennial favorite, Girl Scout Stout (5.9%) — a unique blend of dark chocolate, milk sugar and peppermint. It’s like drinking a Thin Mint without being hassled by little girls in sashes.

Whatever your taste, Stout Month is still young and there is plenty more to discover. Just ask the chap down the bar what they’re drinking. Trust me, they’ll be happy to let you know.

Last week, I spoke at the Wilbur Theater in Boston and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. Audience members submitted their questions on tiny cards before the show, allowing them to remain anonymous while forcing them to be succinct.

Here are some of the questions I didn’t have time to get to at both events...

Q: My girlfriend wants to explore her sexuality with another woman but be “heterosexually exclusive” with me. She wants me to have equal freedom but doesn’t think it’s fair for me to be with another woman. I am a heterosexual man.

How can we achieve sexual equality?

A: An open relationship for her but a closed-on-a-technicality relationship for you? Yeah, no. Want to achieve sexual equality? Explore your sexuality with other women — as a single man.

Q: I am a 50-year-old queer man who never really came out — except to people I’m cruising or fucking. Oh, and to my wife. Is there any social or political value to coming out now, in the shadow of a Trump presidency?

A: There’s tremendous social and political value to being out, whoever the president is. There’s also social and political risk, whoever the president is.

If you’re in a position to come out — and you must be, otherwise you wouldn’t be asking — not coming out is a moral failing.

Q: When I’ve tried to do the fuck buddy thing, I’ve gotten attached. Any way to avoid that?

A: Only do the fuck buddy thing with Republicans.

Q: I’m a 31-year-old straight female. I have an intermittent sexual relationship with a married polyamorous friend. Each time we hook up, he says he regrets it. But several months later, he will contact me and we will hook up again. Should I say no? What do you think is up?

Q: Why are liberals okay with people self-identifying their gender but not their race? Aren’t both considered social Boulder Weekly

Q: How do you get over the guilt of being a straight guy? I used to feel a lot of sexual shame from hearing that men are pigs all the time. I got over most of it, but I still have leftover shame. I want to be respectful of women without having to take responsibility for the actions of every asshole straight man out there.

A: As a gay man, I’m not responsible for the actions of Roy Cohn, Jeffrey Dahmer, and Peter Thiel.

Likewise, I deserve no credit for the accomplishments of Michelangelo, Alan Turing, and Stephen Sondheim.

When you feel the shame and guilt welling up, all you can do is remind yourself that you’re not responsible for the piggishness of Donald Trump or the awesomeness of Chris Kluwe.

(And just to complicate things: While most straight women hate straight male pigs, most straight women want their men to be pigs — but only now and then, and only for them. A dash of controlled/vestigial piggishness is a desirable trait, not a disqualifying one.)

The little sisters of (CBD only) pot re-begin the Beguine

I

was sent an intriguing story earlier this week about a group of nuns in the San Joaquin Valley in California who are growing CBD-only marijuana and turning it into salves, tinctures, soaps and other medicinals.

And they’re doing pretty well at it. According to a story by Melia Robinson of Tech Insider, as of last March, they were making $40,000 a month selling their wares.

They call themselves The Sisters of the Valley.

They are not a Catholic order.

They are an Occupy Wall Street order.

“The order was given birth by the Occupy movement,” says Sister Kate (aka Cannabis Kate), whose previous name is Christine Meeusen. “Our origins are in protesting. While out with the people, the formalization of this order came as a result of so many people asking for it — from so many asking for an order that has, as its holy trinity — service, activism and spirituality.”

And one other thing: They consider themselves to be Beguine revivalists.

The Beguines (pronounced as in begin the Beguine) were Christian lay women in the Middle Ages. They lived in semi-monastic communities but did not take formal religious vows. They promised not to marry as long as they lived as Beguines, but were free both to leave the community at any time and to rejoin it.

“The Beguines pre-dated Christianity,” she says.

“And though they lived together, dressed alike and prayed together, their mission was not to spread any kind of dogma. Their mission was to rescue women

from poverty and give them independence and property (wealth). They were very good at it.”

It all began in 2011 when Meeusen began dressing as a nun during the height of the Occupy Wall Street movement to protest Congress declaring pizza a vegetable, according to Tech Insider. (I’m with her on that; it’s a sacrament, along with beer.) The media dubbed her “Sister Occupy” and she went with it, eventually striking out to start her own order.

The Sisters of the Valley was started two years ago by Sister Kate and 24-yearold Sister Darcy ( Johnson), who were introduced by a mutual friend. Today the order/ business “has nine folks working full-time and another nine to twelve in various specialty positions and this all began from five thousand anarchist, activist, Facebook friends,” says Sister Kate.

The sisters — they prefer to call themselves sisters instead of nuns — make it clear that they are not in any way associated with the Catholic Church, but the Church doesn’t have a copyright on the word “nun.”

The order’s theology seems to be a work in progress, with a strong New Age influence.

Their cannabis products are made in accordance with lunar cycles, for instance. But they do have a mission statement that says their fundamental mission “is to get plant-based medicine into the hands of those in need... to honor Mother Earth and her intelligent plant, provide a valuable product to the people, empower other women to succeed and participate in peaceful progressive activism.”

The also have six vows, which they take for life:

1. Devotion — We promise before Godfather and Goddess Mother to devote all of the days of our lives to the growing, making and distribution of plantbased medicines and to promoting the benefits of plant-based medicines and plant-based diets for Mother Earth and her people.

2. Obedience — to the Moon Cycles and planting cycles, to the goals of the Sisterhood.

3. Activism — to dedicate time each week to progressive activist causes that best benefit the economic conditions of the poor surrounding us.

4. Ecology — to honor Mother Earth in all we do, to do no harm during medicine-making periods.

5. Chastity — dress and behave to honor the work we do, to honor our ancestors and our people.

6. Simplicity — a life of living simply (one car, one bedroom, one house, one TV set) — we do not believe it is necessary, with the wise, just, and ample distribution and use of Mother Earth’s gifts, for anyone to live in poverty. As activists, we fight for the $15 minimum wage and work hard to create honorable jobs for the local people.

If all this sounds a bit quirky, it’s worth recalling that every religion on the planet asks its followers to take a lot on faith. And a religious order built around the healing properties of cannabis has this much going for it: its claims can be tested by science, which is more than can be said for the core beliefs and creation myths of every major religion on the planet.

The Sisters’ habit consists of denim skirts, white blouses and a white head covering. It bears a family resemblance to a Catholic nun’s habit but is deliberately different.

There’s something else that they do differently, too: They pay taxes and have no interest in being a tax-exempt order. That’s because they practice forprofit marijuana capitalism in order to raise money for their mission.

That alone is enough to turn an atheist into an agnostic.

Surely even Fruit Loops are more nutritious? Now Mrs. Trump is making news again with her plans to capitalize on her First Ladyship. Because of course she is. If she’s gonna learn anything from her husband, it’s that there’s money to be made off of every opportunity handed to you.

So here are some suggestions she may want to consider: A perfume named “Shame;” sweatpants that read “TRUMP” on the crotch; a picture book of the U.S. Constitution for Republicans, erm, we mean adults who don’t have time to read it. Or she could profit from her husband’s exploits directly: sell counterfeit passports, invest in charter schools or move to North Dakota and “live off the land.”

Either way, Trump will surely grasp this opportunity to brag about all the jobs he’s creating. “Just look at my wife’s new line of fur fanny packs, they’re made right here.” Oy vey.
