Boulder County Events: What to do and where to go

JOSEPH. 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, The Fox Theatre, 1135 13th St., Boulder, 303-447-0095.

For the sisters of Oregon-bred trio Joseph — Natalie,

Allison and Meegan — there’s a connection that borders on telepathic. You can

almost hear it in their otherworldly harmonies. On their sophomore album, ‘Good Luck, Kid,’ the sisters break away from the dreamy folk that typified their debut album and take up a grittier form of storytelling that’s no less effective. Intimate and intense, you’ll find yourself lost in their soaring voices and uplifting messages. — CR

MARGARETTA GILBOY, DAPHNE & APOLLO (DETAIL), 2008, OIL ON LINEN, 24 X 30”. COURTESY OF PAUL GILLIS.

MARGARETTA GILBOY (1943-2017) was a much acclaimed and influential art- ist whose work — though often described as realist — defies easy classification. Working primarily in oil and watercolor, Gilboy created paintings brimming with a seemingly incongruous and occasionally off-kilter deployment of objects both Eastern and Western. Her expertly and tenderly painted still lifes and portraits owe much of their sophistication to an oblique dialogue between art-historical masterpieces and objects of quotidian domesticity. Margaretta Gilboy: ‘Flying in the Hands of Time: A Retrospective,’ is showing at Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art through May 25.

WAS BENJAMIN L. E. BONNEVILLE, captain of the U.S. Army, granted a two-year leave to try his hand as a fur trader in the Rocky Mountain West? Or did his superiors have ulterior motives, tasking Bonneville to spy on the British in the Pacific Northwest? The Bonneville expedition began in Missouri and made its way to the Oregon country, territory at the time shared through mutual agreement by the U.S. and Great Britain. Yet the British presence there caused grave concerns about the geographic boundaries of our nation. ‘West of Green River,” by Jerry Keenan, is a fictional account of the Bonneville expedition that brings to life the difficult trek Bonneville and his men faced on their westward journey to Oregon. Keenan will speak about and sign his book at 7 p.m. on Feb. 7 at Inkberry Books in Niwot.

Mexico City is home to 9 million souls, but the gov- ernment operates fewer than 45 ambulances to aid them in times of need. To fill the gap, an entire underground industry of for-profit ambulances has cropped up. None are regulated, most are unli- censed physicians with little to no training, and all of them are in competition with one another. First on the scene gets the injured, which has created an unholy system of police bribes and part- nerships with private hospitals. None of which seems to be in the patient’s best interest. Produced, directed, shot and edited by Luke Lorentzen, ‘Midnight Family’ follows the Ochoas — an uncle, a father and his two sons — as they stalk the streets of Mexico City waiting for tragedy. Lorentzen embeds himself with the Ochoas, racing along with them in the ambulance as they hurtle down crowded streets toward car crashes, asphyxiated infants and a young girl who fell four floors. It’s exhilarating filmmaking, and at a brisk 81 minutes, you’ll be in the parking lot, halfway to your car, before the ethics of it finally catch up to you. —MJC

ROBERT RETURNS TO DUBLIN to reunite with Cait, the woman who captured his heart during a James Joyce literary tour 35 years ago. Dancing backwards through time, the older couple retraces their steps to discover their younger selves. Through youthful Robbie and Caithleen, they relive the unlikely, inevitable events that brought them (briefly) together. ‘Bloomsday’ is a time-traveling love story that blends wit, humor and heartache into a buoyant, moving appeal for making the most of the present before it becomes the past. Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company presents ‘Bloomsday’ Feb. 7 through March 1 at the Dairy Arts Center.
