Highroad Sanders’ populist surge

ot only have crowds been streaming into arenas all around the country to hear Bernie Sanders’ fact-studded speeches, but ordinary Americans have also been pitching in small donations (averaging only $27 each) to self-finance a viable, multimillion-dollar presidential campaign that can go the distance.

In Bernie’s campaign, grassroots people themselves are taking charge — not leaving it to establishment officeholders and party operatives to do the same old thing. Sure, many progressive

old-timers are drawn to Bernie’s maverick run, but the driving force is coming from two encouraging sources: (1) An emerging rainbow of young people disgusted by the greed and pettiness of today’s “leaders” who are destructing American democracy into a plutocracy that callously sweeps the needs of the declining middle class, the poor, the planet and the common good under the rug; and (2) a potentially game-changing group of working class mad-ashellers who had disengaged from a governing system that has deliberately ignored working stiffs or, worse, cynically used them as political pawns to be demonized and disempowered.

Sanders’ populist surge appeals to a wide range of free-thinking, truthseeking voters, but they’re being warned by the Democratic hierarchy that the only way to defeat the horror of a Trump-Cruz presidency is to set aside our populist idealism this year

and stick with Obama-style, don’trock-the-corporate-boat liberalism that merely tweaks the status quo.

That’s not exactly a turn-on for the majority of people fed up with business-as-usual politics — which is why so many Americans are hitching their populist hopes to Sanders’ peoplepowered movement.

After all, as a farmer once told me, status quo is Latin for “The mess we’re in.” Forget just tweaking our broken system — we need transformative change that empowers grassroots people over corporate oligarchs.

ell, Mr. Trump, how’s that Canadian stuff working out for ya?

Not so much, eh?

When Donald Trump attempted to question whether Ted Cruz was a “natural born citizen” — Cruz was born in Calgary to an American mother — Cruz’s initial response was to post the video from the old Happy Days TV show of Fonzie jumping the shark.

Judging by what happened in Iowa on Monday the jumping the shark metaphor was prescient. Playing the citizenship card was the moment the Trump campaign began to stall.

Trump’s attack on Cruz’s citizenship was a disingenuous act of character assassination that ended up raising more questions about Trump’s character, and intellectual honesty, than Cruz’s.

It didn’t blow up in Trump’s face — he actually pulled ahead of Cruz in Iowa polling after he played the Canadian card — but it caused a lot of voters to start looking at him critically and having doubts about what they saw.

Cruz responded by accusing Trump of having “New York values,” by which he meant Trump was no conservative.

Trump had a strong riposte in the sixth Republican debate on Jan. 15, but the charge stuck. What a lot of undecided Iowa voters saw once they started looking at Trump critically — and more than a third of them were undecided three days before the caucuses — was that Trump had a couple of “New York values” Cruz had neglected to mention: rudeness and arrogance.

At the very least, this kept Trump, the supposed master of the art of the deal, from closing the deal in a timely manner. And that proved deadly.

Trump’s last opportunity to close the deal was the Jan. 28 Republican debate in Des Moines, sponsored by Fox News. But he picked a fight with Fox over whether Megyn Kelly — who played hard-ball with him in the first Republican debate — would be one of the moderators and dropped out after Fox refused to drop her.

That was a costly mistake, not so much because it appeared arrogant (which it was), but because it gave Cruz 6 February 4, 2016

and Rubio a chance to strut their stuff (which they did). Cruz had a solid performance, Rubio had a breakthrough one, and Trump lost the initiative.

As usual with matters Trumpian, the national press corps couldn’t quite believe what it was seeing. Trump was making amateur mistakes in Iowa. He had failed to build a grass-roots campaign organization, even though he knew Cruz had built a superb one. He was taking his supporters for granted (like when he said he could go out on Fifth Avenue and shoot someone and it wouldn’t cost him any votes) and treated them cavalierly (like when he called the people of Iowa stupid).

Worst of all, when Cruz challenged his conservative credentials, he didn’t answer effectively.

But the press, focusing on the dozen or so polls that showed Trump in the lead in the days before the caucuses, concluded the only thing that could stop him was if there was a low turnout by his supporters on caucus night — choosing to ignore the huge number of undecided voters who in poll after poll kept on not deciding, an obvious bad sign for a supposed frontrunner.

More than 180,000 showed up at the Republican caucuses (the old record was 121,000), including scads of firsttime attendees, who were supposed to favor Trump. The late deciders showed up in force — and opted mostly for Rubio (31 percent) and Cruz (27 percent). Trump got 13 percent.

Citizen Cruz got 51,649 votes, more votes than anyone in the history of Iowa caucuses in either party. Trump finished second with 45,416. Rubio finished third with 43,132.

Trump managed a reasonably gracious speech thanking his supporters and split for New Hampshire, where he has a big lead in the polls.

A lot of reporters were treating Rubio as if he had won, because he had exceeded (the press’) expectations. And the treatment was not entirely undeserved. Rubio delivered a genuinely stellar victory speech, some of it reminiscent of JFK at his best. Rubio has clearly come to play.

Re: Dave Anderson’s Berniebashing... steady majority agree the U.S. should redistribute wealth [Re: The Anderson Files, Jan. 28].

What a shallow and obviously selfish statement. In fact I’m surprised the stats aren’t even higher. After all it is very easy to give away (or steal away by coercion) someone else’s money. If they are ill-gotten gains, either bust them or change laws, and certainly simplify the tax code and lower corporate taxes to bring jobs home ... but let’s remember it is the wealthy of the world who provide most of the jobs so the rest of us can eat.

They tend to work many more hours too.

The wealthy also give far more of the charitable funds. Punish the most successful and we will all see less of the good things in our society. Think of crony capitalists as the problem, not the wealthy, and certainly not capitalism.

Remember: reward what you want more of, punish what you want less of.

Do you want to change the laws to encourage more entrepreneurs and successful producers who create jobs here and bring needed goods to us? We should be proud of success and work to bring more people up into high-earner status, not grab the money from those who’ve made it. Which, also, by the way, rewards those who don’t work who are capable of working.

Why not strive for the top instead of covet those who’ve worked hard to get there and even take risks (venture capitalism and stocks and crowd funding, etc.) on others trying to make their companies grow and contribute to those truly in need?

Anti-homeless laws wrong

A city attorney is supposed to tell the truth to the city. Well at the Jan. 26 afternoon meeting the woman in that office, spoke for the perceived interest of those paying her paycheck. She claimed no anti-homeless law was overturned anywhere in the USA. She did not need to leave Colorado to disprove that.

In 2013, this Colorado Springs City Council composed an ordinance which was indeed deemed to be mostly unconstitutional by the Denver Court. It was the anti-panhandling law.

Courts have called cities anti-homeless ordinances unconstitutional. In August, the U.S. Dept, of Justice (DOJ) joined a homeless women in Idaho, and said no person should be found criminally guilty of a crime, for fulfilling a basic need such as sleep.

When one aspect of a claim is false, examine the rest. This city officer said an anti-homeless law has never been stricken, and it has.

For honesty, vote Bernie

The Flint Michigan toxic water story is a horrifying lesson in the damage that can be done when public officials lie to their constituents. The public repeatedly asked for disclosure about their water supply and why they were getting rashes, hair loss, memory loss, vision loss and other illnesses while watching the water become more and more brackish, distasteful and discolored. They were told over and over that the water supply was drinkable and posed no health problem in any way. Now many children of Flint will have permanently damaged their see LETTERS Page 7

chances for a successful, happy life because of the brain damage caused by lead poisoning in the water supply.

At this point we are selecting presidential candidates. It seems clear to me that there is one mandatory characteristic for a candidate without which all other characteristics are meaningless.

That trait is honesty. Does the candidate say what others want to hear or do they speak their truth even when it’s unpopular? Telling people only what they want to hear is the earmark of dishonesty.

I want to hear what politicians think, not what they think I want to hear.

Don’t be fooled by what sounds good.

Public servants fooling the public can have the most dire consequences. Ask the citizens of Flint Michigan. Their governor, Rick Snyder, is even now looking for a good PR firm rather than searching out the truth and making sure it doesn’t happen again.

If you don’t want to end up disappointed by the policies of someone you voted for, make sure you vote for an honest person. Bernie Sanders has a public record of speaking the truth that goes back over 35 years. You won’t be surprised by his policies. He is who he says he is. Every time.

K-8 school at Flatiron Meadows

Some of you have contacted me about the letter from Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) Superintendent Bruce Messinger yesterday in which he describes the District’s efforts in resolving a specific concern related to oil and gas operations adjacent to the new K-8 school site at Flatiron Meadows that “might affect the construction.”

I know parents in particular are concerned about the timing of construction and the proximity of the site to oil and gas activities. That is why I thought it best to share this information with everyone.

Let me start by saying that the Town strongly values BVSD as a community partner. We supported the bond that is the funding mechanism for the school’s construction. And personally, I remain a strong advocate for school expansion in Erie — including this site at Flatiron Meadows. This is a complicated issue. In short, BVSD and the developer are seeking some form of relief from the oil and gas operator (Anadarko) and/or assurances from the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC) as they relate to the operator’s surface use rights on a well site adjacent to the new school site. This is the issue that might affect the timing of construction.

While it is true the Town is not a party to the surface use agreement at the heart of this issue, I want you to know that we remain committed to helping BVSD find a solution. As one example, in August of last year, Town staff met with BVSD and the developer to review options on a thoughtful path forward. I can assure you that we are doing our part to assist the District.

or have seen on social media were from residents surprised to learn that there was in fact an oil and gas site adjacent to the future school site. I understand and share your concerns — especially as they relate to safeguarding setbacks from schools and oil and gas activity.

The Flatiron Meadows Master Development Agreement was approved by the Town exactly seven years ago today on January 26, 2009. And this

agreement not only called for a school site to be dedicated but also specifically referenced the presence of existing and future oil and gas wells and facilities.

Seven years later, COGCC setback requirements have changed. That is why today we try to get drilling completed in residential neighborhoods prior to new homes being built. That is why we have see LETTERS Page 8

successfully worked with developers and school districts to address concerns such as proximity to well sites.

The Flatiron Meadows school site was envisioned and planned for seven years ago. Similar to other developments, there are challenges to be overcome. And the good news is that we have the concerned parties — all who have expressed an interest in getting the school built — working towards a solution. That’s where the focus needs to remain. Those that drive down the road looking in their rear view mirror don’t make it very far. I would encourage each of us in our own capacities to continue to work towards a satisfactory solution.

I hope this letter addresses some of your questions and concerns.

didate, was a lot flintier and more explicitly political than Rubio’s. I thought the most interesting part was when he directly reached out to Reagan Democrats (“Your party has left you.

We welcome you back.”) and asked them to join in driving “the liberal elites and the Washington cartel into the Potomac and out to sea never to be seen again.”

What made that red meat passage particularly interesting (apart from the fact that Reagan Democrats are a big part of Trump supporters) was that over at Clinton headquarters, Hillary was doubling down on her call for gun control — the issue that has cost the Democrats dozens of congressional seats in districts dominated by Reagan Democrats. At a time when Cruz was inviting Reagan Democrats into the Republican tent, Hillary was in effect telling them they were unwelcome in the Democratic Party.

Refuge on Jan. 2, 2016, was quite open — he carried a gun at all times and was ready to use it. He reached for it, apparently, and was shot dead. Geez. Like Finicum, I’ve opposed U.S. policy enough to risk arrest, to occupy federal facilities, and to stand up to federal law enforcement. Unlike him, I’ve actually done it numerous times and never been shot. I’ve always been nonviolent and, to be frank, my method makes victory possible and, in some cases, achieved.

Finicum apparently thought that a gun makes you safer. It is the opposite. I helped occupy Oregon Senator Ron Wyden’s office twice — once when he was thinking about how he might vote on the 2002 Senate bill to grant George W. Bush essentially illimitable powers to invade and wage war on Iraq or anyone else. Wyden ended up voting our way.

We were nonviolent and courteous. I helped occupy his office again in 2006 to convince him to speak out against the war in Iraq. We were quite friendly, actually, with Homeland Security, who arrested us. Wyden did as we asked — he posted on his website (finally!) that he opposed the ongoing war and he even rose on the United States of America Senate floor to call for an end to that occupation. danish plan As for Trump, it’s too early to write his political obituary (again), but I think he was hurt by his Iowa loss more severely than the reporters in Iowa were prepared to say. The most damaging aspect of the loss was not that the candidate who calls all his rivals losers has lost his first cage match. Much of Trump’s success flows from the fact that he has had seven months of non-stop earned media, which marginalized coverage of the other Republican candidates.

The press couldn’t help itself. As the self-appointed arbiters of political correctness, the press had a voyeuristic obsession with the most politically incorrect presidential candidate since George Wallace.

That game is almost certainly over now. Trump is going to have to share the spotlight with Cruz and Rubio, and chances are they will juse the opportunity to rip his hide off.

I’ve done other nonviolent occupations over the decades — even a one-man occupation of the Soviet embassy in nonviolent resistance to their weaponry. I’ve never even had a weapon pulled on me, let alone being shot, and every single public policy ask I’ve made has ultimately been granted. It is so sad to see Muslim extremists reverting to 12th century brutality and American “patriots” regressing to 19th century behavior. I think I part company with my fellow Cobalt Blue Liberal Democrats, Center Leftists, Progressives, Democratic Socialists on the Nordic model (thanks Bernie) and Independents over Donald Trump. That is to say I no longer see him as an aberration and passing phenomena. An aberration, yes, no doubt but no longer just a passing phenomena, he’s here to stay. And I think he is a clear and present danger to the health, welfare and any potential political harmony in our country. The poison he spews and attracts should be of particular concern to minorities. He started his shrewd campaign by attacking Hispanics and quickly pivoted to Muslims, as there’s probably more bang for the buck there.

I’m sure it’s just a matter of time before he turns on the Blacks, Jews and anyone else not like him. Dangerous Rightwing racist groups are ecstatic at the prospect of his candidacy. I blame the Republicans for this bizarre political construct. They had better think of something to stop this xenophobic cat.

I don’t think the world has forgotten the last German (Trump’s German) megalomaniac that grabbed political power.

Enough of even talking about the man. Republicans drop the Trump Chump. Thanks.

Like most sentient beings I am appalled and disturbed by what comes from Donald Trump. Could it be that this is exactly the desired reaction?

Aside from the possibility that Trump is the best thing ever to happen to the Democratic Party, I cringe most when I observe more than a few lowdata voter types nodding to his beat.

they like him because he’s a businessman, can get things done. Ignoring the way businessmen got us into that financial crisis a few years back, I wonder which political party is more responsible for the lack of items ticked off the list lately. Could that be the party Trump supposedly claims?

Trump’s ego won’t let his head through a single doorway. But the power of words is related to the power over minds (especially weaker ones, in the Middle East, in Michigan, in Midland or elsewhere). If this guy were to achieve the real reins of power, where might we end up?

I’m sorry, but this wind gust must be calmed. I think the best way to do that would be to ignore Trump completely. If the broadcast outlets and internet folks would agree not to carry a single word — even for money — perhaps we could restore some sense of moral gravity; to politics if not to governance. Hopefully, advertisers could agree to pull all ads from media not adhering to a course of Trump silence.

By comparison each day would then seem like Spring.

Navy boats in peril

As a former Navy enlisted and Navy officer, I am disappointed with the capture of our two riverine boats and crews by the Iranians in the Persian Gulf.

I understand one of the boats had a navigation problem, either mechanical or human error, and it wandered into Iranian waters. But why couldn’t the other boat tow it away from Iranian waters?

Furthermore, why wasn’t a warship accompanying the two small boats as they traversed waters in close proximity to an unfriendly country?

Why didn’t the riverine boats communicate their problems to their commanding officer, who should have been monitoring their transit from Kuwait to Bahrain? If they did communicate their situation, what were the instructions they received from higher command?

It appears to me the personnel on the riverine boats and the command hierarchy viewed the movement of the boats as a routine operation, and they were caught off guard by the problems encountered, and they were not prepared to conduct contingency operations. It reminds me of the capture of the USS Pueblo off of North Korea many years ago.

This incident could embolden the Iranians and other unfriendly countries to test our military prowess.

Obama’s new education act may give conservative school reform advocates a way to finally take over public education

n the early 2010s, conservative billionaires from the Koch brothers to Alex Cranberg poured money into local school board elections nationwide in order to get conservative school reform advocates elected.

Meanwhile, Jeb Bush worked with Microsoft, Dell and textbook makers to change curriculums and promote faulty virtual charter schools. It all worked. That is, until voters got wise last year, and communities across the country voted the reform billionaires, and their candidates, out of their schools.

But now, new education legislation from the Obama administration threatens to put those very same reform advocates in power at the state level. And no one’s talking about it.

The reform movement was strong in Colorado. Voters in Jefferson County chose to recall and replace a majority of the school district’s board of education.

Parents, teachers, students and the community were tired of the conservative school reform agenda that three members comprising the board’s majority were pushing. Protests outside the district’s schools called attention to the vast amounts of outside money that helped the three reformers win their elections in the first place.

By a two-to-one margin, voters in the district sent a clear message in 2015 that they were tired of outside influence controlling what went on in their local schools.

In the same election last year, residents in the Thompson School District overwhelmingly voted to replace the conservative reform members who made up that board’s majority and who had cut public comment sessions, sued the local teachers’ union, wasted millions in public funds and were pushing education reform tenets like pay-for-performance for teachers and charter school vouchers. The same outside forces that funded reform board candidates in Jefferson County also funded the Thompson board members.

And in Douglas County, where the board reform majority still remains, money from those same billionaires as well as money from Jeb Bush and Michael Bloomberg poured into the reform candidates in 2009 to boost their initial campaigns.

Nobody in Thompson, Jefferson or Douglas, had seen the election of these reform candidates coming.

The local school board just wasn’t something people expected hundreds of thousands of outside dollars to pour into. But by and large, once voters noticed what 10 February 4, 2016

had happened, they rejected the policies and the method by which those policies were enacted in their districts.

Just as Colorado voters pushed back against the reformers last year, communities across the country rebelled in their own districts where groups like the Koch brothers’ Americans for Prosperity, the school reform group Americans for Choice in Education (ACE) and others had funneled money into small, local races in order to swing school boards. Just as swiftly as the reform movement had taken over local school boards nationwide, voters pushed them away.

But then the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) was passed and signed by President Obama on Dec. 10 last year. It was hailed as a bipartisan end to No Child Left Behind (NCLB), a national school performance accountability program that many educators ultimately felt was too burdensome and punitive.

ESSA was also packaged as an effective rewrite of Obama’s Race to the Top program, which awarded NCLB federal grants to states that adopted the

Common Core, federally devised math and language standards that each student had to meet.

When it was signed, ESSA replaced NCLB and also got rid of the Common Core mandate — that is, states could now determine how to assess their students. It meant less standardized testing for students, a move that has made many educators very happy, but it also appears to have empowered state boards of education that were mostly rendered impotent under NCLB. Bottom line, ESSA is large legislation. It’s a long, complicated bill that sometimes contradicts itself and that state officials, from the Colorado Board of Education to the state teachers’ union, are working diligently to sort out. At the very least, ESSA gives states the right to control many things about how they run their schools. And, according to the White House, the education bill will “[empower] state and local decisionmakers to develop their own strong systems for school improvement,” and “[establish] new resources for proven strategies that will spur reform.”

This transition from federal to state control of academic standards figures to be a defining moment in the way the U.S. educates its children. Though it’s not unprecedented for there to be incongruity in the way states educate (in fact, this was partly the impetus for NCLB) the stakes, arguably, are higher now than ever, and outside influencers, like the reformers that voters roundly rejected last year, are preparing to take advantage of the changes.

Though how Colorado decides to unpack ESSA is still to be determined, the state legislature is likely to continue to carry the weight of enacting education laws and standards, according to several state education sources. But one group whose influence is likely to increase in that process is the Colorado Board of Education.

The state Board of Education is comprised of seven elected members from seven districts across the state. Each member serves a six-year term. There are three seats up for election this year. The board works with a commissioner, whom they appoint, and a new commissioner, Rich Crandall, was appointed in January this year.

Until now, the state board’s responsibilities have been to implement legislation passed by the state, and sometimes, to help craft education bills. ESSA will Boulder Weekly

news give the state board at least one more major responsibility, says Colorado Education Association (CEA) President Kerrie Dallman. The board and commissioner will be charged with developing a “practitioner’s committee,” which will “develop an implementation plan” for any new legislation required by ESSA or designed by the state. In other words, the state board and commissioner will decipher and decide what ESSA says and how it will be implemented in Colorado.

Colorado Board of Education member Angelika Schroeder (D-Boulder) says there is currently a wide political range on the state board, which could factor into how ESSA is implemented.

“I keep saying the world is round and if you keep going way to the left and way to the right you’re going to run into each other on the other side of the world, and that’s what’s happened,” says Schroeder.

But not everyone agrees that the state board’s politics are substantively diverse.

There are currently four Republicans and three Democrats on the state board. Commissioner Crandall is a Republican. Party affiliations for these board members, as was the case in local school districts where reformers had taken over, are less telling than the political connections each member has made.

Take Board Chairman Steve Durham (R-Colorado Springs). He’s a former lobbyist for the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce. He and Tom Tancredo were members of the pejorative “House Crazies” in the ’70s and ’80s, a group of hyper-conservative legislators. He’s been scheduled to speak at Koch brothers’ Americans for Prosperity events. And he was involved with launching Coloradans for Freedom with Republican Joe Megyesy, a program officer at the Gill Foundation. The Gill Foundation is a singularly focused advocacy group that financially supports Democratic and Republican candidates, groups and legislation in exchange for those parties’ support of gay rights.

Or take state board member Pam Mazanec (R-Larkspur). She’s a director of pro-reform and procharter school group, Great Choice Douglas County.

She is a graduate of the Leadership Program of the Rockies, the ultra-conservative factory of policy makers run by school reform champion Bob Shaffer, who also has ties to the Koch brothers. On Facebook, she has adamantly called people “conspiracy theorists” if they question that the Koch brothers andsimilarily uber-rich school reform advocates Ed McVaney, Ralph Nagel and Alex Cranberg — who are three of Colorado’s largest contributors to Republican campaigns and members of ACE — are “good men who truly care about the kids.” She also once wrote on a Facebook thread that the U.S. ended slavery voluntarily and wondered “Shouldn’t our students be provided that viewpoint?”

Or take state board member Joyce Rankin (R-Carbondale). She’s an outspoken supporter of school reform, calling for equitable funding for charter schools and more school choice. She has been backed by the conservative Independence Institute, which also supported reform candidates in Jefferson, Thompson and Douglas counties. Rankin told Chalkbeat Colorado that working with her state representative husband, Bob Rankin, won’t “be a problem at all.” Bob Rankin has received money from Colorado Concern, a shadowy, invitation-only powerBoulder Weekly

house of conservative politics in the state.

Or you can even take Deborah Scheffel (R-Parker), who is the sister of Leadership Program of the Rockies graduate and state senator Mark Scheffel.

Do these affiliations and connections sound familiar, voters in Jefferson, Thompson and Douglas counties? And yet there is still the matter of the new board commissioner, Rich Crandall.

As a state senator in Arizona, Crandall received a rating of 84 from the Kochs’ Americans for Prosperity.

He runs a USDA school lunch audit and consulting group, while also having sponsored legislation in Arizona to get rid of the state’s free lunch program.

He was the sole final candidate for the commissioner position as chosen by Ray and Associates, the consulting group hired by the reform board majority in Douglas County to find their superintendent.

It’s history repeating itself, only this time it’s at the state level, which has become far more important with the passage of ESSA. Crandall sponsored or supported legislation written by the conservative law-writing group, American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), including bills that benefitted charter schools, “opposed federal intrusion” in state education standards, and promoted digital and virtual school programs. In fact, Crandall’s championing of virtual charters and programs ties him directly to some heavy national funders and politicians — from Jeb Bush to Bill Gates.

In 2010, Bush campaigned for virtual school expansion in Florida. ALEC adopted Bush’s virtual school platform, and Bush’s nonprofit, Foundation for Excellence in Education (FEE), has since advocated states to adopt the platform. FEE is funded by education material publishers K12, Apex, Pearson, McGraw-Hill, as well as Microsoft and the nonprofit Gates Foundation. An advisory board made of personnel at Blackboard, Google, Dell, Microsoft and others help oversee the implementation of Bush’s virtual school tenets in states. There is money to be earned for those listed above in virtual charter schools — it was an estimated $900 million industry in 2015.

Crandall, according to The Nation, spoke at a FEE-sponsored National Summit on Education Reform in 2011 and “said to hearty applause that he had developed a local think tank to support the virtual school reforms he helped usher into law.”

Virtual schools and digital education programs have since proven to be effective for a minority of students, and the 2015 Stanford University “CREDO” study found that students in K-12 online virtual schools lose the equivalent of 72 days of reading education and the equivalent of a full school year in math education.

But it’s folly to focus on Crandall’s support of virtual schools and miss the connections Colorado’s new state commissioner has forged through his time in politics.

Boulder’s state board member Angelika Schroeder points out that the commissioner acts at the behest of the board, which may actually align with the body of work Crandall has previously accomplished.

“We are his boss. If he’s got four people supporting what he’s doing, that’s it,” Schroeder says. “Our last commissioner was also a Republican. He was a-political, and Rich is political.”

But Schroeder, though on the other side of the

figurative aisle, agrees with Crandall on many things, and is “supportive of much of the reform” that Crandall worked on in Arizona and during a brief stint as state superintendent in Wyoming. Crandall, by the way, was also a finalist for a similar position in Utah last year.

“I don’t worry as much about [the] ALEC [bills Crandall supported] to be honest with you, because they are largely a business organization,” Schroeder says, belying the organization’s true character and purpose.

Schroeder adds that in her meetings with Crandall, she was impressed with his ability to communicate and galvanize education communities toward a co-operated goal. That ability, she says, is near the top of needs for Colorado, where leadership has objectively been lacking and at a time when ESSA figures to shake up the dynamic.

“The politics are killing us,” Schroeder says of Colorado education, both on a policymaking and community level. “I would say that we’re not listening very carefully. Only 20 to 25 percent of the voters have children in schools. ... Those are the people making the most noise. Teachers don’t want educator effectiveness. They don’t want time taken out for testing. They overreact to testing, I would say. Then we’ve got 70 to 75 percent of the population that says we want teachers to be evaluated in some way, so that the bad apples are out in some way and that we recognize our very best teachers.

“None of us have been able to find anything negative about Rich or people who were upset with him,” she says, adding the caveat that, “Rich has been here way too short a time for me to get any sense if he can provide leadership.”

Dallman, the state teachers’ union president, is cautious about Crandall.

“He’s a very nice man, and I think it’s too early to tell what kind of commissioner he’s going to be within the Colorado context,” she says. “He clearly still has a lot to learn about the climate here in Colorado, as well as the various education mandates that are currently on the books.”

Dallman pointed out that in one of her two conversations with Crandall, she picked out an idea that is typical of education reform advocates.

“He’s very focused on business metrics, and obviously a reform-minded crowd has been really focused on business metrics, which has led to our state overtesting students,” Dallman says, before adding that, “It’s too early to tell if there are philosophical differences.”

Schroeder says Crandall has already been touting research that indicates independent, state-developed tests during the time of NCLB and Race to the Top have been as effective and could be more accommodating than federal or Common Core testing.

“Rich has said he’s going to have Colorado do their own assessments, and what he will tell you is the results are the same. He talks about four different states, two of which did their own assessment, two of which [did not], and there wasn’t any difference between the four.”

Developing state assessments would require the state legislature to disperse additional funds, Schroeder says. There is no indication as to which company will See REFORM Page 12

receive the contracts and money to create the new assessments should they get the greenlight.

Other immediate changes are unlikely as ESSA’s stipulations get figured out, but Dallman says she’s paying close attention to the new commissioner and the state board.

“We’re always concerned that someone can bring bad policy with them,” Dallman says of Crandall. “All I can say is we’re going to be watching very carefully.”

One thing Dallman, CEA and educators will be watching carefully is the implementation of these new regulations and if any of the outside influences currently involved on the state board will actually have an impact. Schroeder says it could be May before the board has figured out all that ESSA entails.

“I’m told there are things in one part that counteract pieces in the other part,” she says. “If that is in fact the case, that’s really going to make writing the rules a trick. I’m looking forward to it, but I’m not sure how it’s going to come out.”

Colorado is not alone in figuring out how to implement ESSA, and Schroeder says the federal government will hold workshops across the country to show “states how to unpack this.”

What remains to be seen is if members of the reform movement will continue efforts to win seats on the district school board level. After such resounding defeats at the polls last year, ESSA could be an opportunity for reformers to focus their attentions on state departments of education and school boards — and if Colorado is any example, it appears that may be their new method of attack.

Progressive critics of ESSA have said that the bill doesn’t do enough to protect low-income students, protects special interests and includes too many ambiguities with regards to teacher evaluations, achievement standards and more. In states with heavy reform presence like North Carolina, Oregon and Wisconsin, these inadequacies could be exploited by outside interests. Too, in states without clear delineations of who produces education policy and how it’s produced, outside interests like the Kochs are likely to become involved.

There are also several states that, like Colorado, already have a reform or conservative presence on their state school boards. These states have varied laws, and the state boards have varied levels of control. The Texas state school board, for instance, has

had various factions of conservative, reform and even Christian fundamentalism in control for at least seven years, and because of state laws, the board has been able to pass controversial policies including changes to curriculum. In Alabama, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, the state school board joined evangelical Christian political activist David Barton to publicly rail against Common Core in 2014. In Utah, the state school board and Koch-affiliated superintendent voted last year with the state legislature to implement an aggressive pay-for-performance program for the state’s lowest performing schools.

And it was just last year that the North Carolina school board voted to allow teachers to include history class materials outside of those which had been created by a Koch brothers-backed organization called the Bill of Rights Institute, which the state had required for years prior.

If you look deep enough, or just at, any number of states or state boards across the country, the reform influence likely already exists. Reformers may have to plug money into school boards or they may not have to if reform proponents are already instated. And ESSA, when all is said and done, figures to give curriculum, assessment and other critical decisions to these state school boards that previously may not have had that leeway.

In Colorado, with three state school board seats up for grabs in November, precedent dictates money is going to fly in, while groups like Americans for Prosperity and Independence Institute will likely work the media, phones and mailers, as they have in the past, to curry favor.

In fact, the public relations campaign for the reform movement is in full swing. You may have seen, or even participated in, National School Choice Week (NCSW). In 16,140 events across the country in the last week of January, NCSW brought together students, teachers and administrators (many from charter schools), gave them all a yellow scarf and held rallies and speeches at various locations.

So deeply has NCSW taken root in just three years that in Denver, new state board commissioner Crandall spoke to a crowd at the State Capitol about the importance of school choice. Students stood and talked about the advantages of charter and virtual schools. There was even mention made of the National School Choice Week dance, which is taught

in schools across the country. You can learn it here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0M5nCsKObc You might be looking at your kids right now and thinking the idea of them singing and dancing about “school choice” is a little forced. If so, you’d be onto something.

NCSW is supported by a who’s who of the reform movement: Independence Institute, Great Choice Douglas County (Board Member Mazanec’s group), Colorado League of Charter Schools, ACE Scholarships, various local charter school groups, and Jeb Bush’s Foundation for Excellence in Education.

What stemmed the tide for many against the reform movement in Jefferson, Thompson and school districts across the country was simply paying attention to the outside forces that were funding the reform. Though voter turnout will be high in this presidential election year, Schroeder says voters in Colorado will need to pay attention to education and the three state board seats up for grabs if they want change.

“Education issues are not resonating with the voters, that’s not what they’re flipped out about,” Schroeder says. “So maybe we just need to get through this election, and Colorado needs to look at their standards and decide if this is what we want to do.”

The issue is that the Kochs, and all reformers, are happy enough to keep education off of voters’ minds this year. By the time communities get wise this time, it may be too late to change back.

The Common Sense Policy Roundtable, which has ties to the Koch brothers and has several board members who have graduated from the Leadership Program of the Rockies, is a group that provides research to back up the conservative causes in which they believe. Recently, the group published a study, “Douglas County’s Dramatic Shift — Treating Teachers Like Professionals,” which proclaims the success of school reform in the only Colorado district with a reform board majority remaining.

There is reason to believe that more studies from the group will be forthcoming from the CU Leeds School of Business, which runs their economic modeling program, REMI. The studies will likely support the viability and success of educational reform.

all started with John Kiriakou getting punched in the face — sort of.

It was the late ’80s. Kiriakou (pronounced kir-ee-ah-koo) was 23 and working at the headquarters of a labor union in Washington, D.C., while he finished his master’s degree in legislative affairs at George Washington University. He’d found himself in a class called “psychology of leadership.” The class studied how personal psychological issues are exposed in international affairs. For example, how Stalin used Roosevelt’s illness against him at Yalta.

“So we had an assignment where we had to shadow our bosses and write a psychological evaluation,” Kiriakou says. “I worked for a lunatic. I knew it. I wrote in my paper that I thought he was a sociopath

Kiriakou had a hard time believing it at first, too.

“It was completely unexpected,” he says. “The CIA had never even entered my mind. ... I thought, ‘Maybe I will take the Foreign Service exam or go to law school’... I should have gone to film school, in retrospect.”

But Kiriakou couldn’t have known what would happen. He couldn’t have known that an award-winning career with the CIA, spanning nearly two decades, would result in his arrest and almost two years of imprisonment.

But that’s what happened. In 2013, John Kiriakou was sentenced to 30 months in prison for revealing CIA undercover identities to journalists, but Kiriakou believes those charges were a ruse for his real “crime” — whistleblowing. In 2007, he was the first U.S. government official to confirm, on national television, that torture was official government policy, approved

by President Bush, when interrogating alQaeda prisoners post9/11. From 2014 to 2015, he served 23 months at the Federal Correctional Troy Page/truthout via Flickr Institution in Loretto, Pennsylvania, and three months of house arrest in Arlington, Virginia.

Kiriakou says he nearly lost everything, including his faith in the U.S. government, but he maintains he’d do it all over again.

And maybe it didn’t all start with that punch to the face, but it feels like foreshadowing at the very least.

Former CIA agent and whistleblower John Kiriakou comes to Boulder to talk about how the government silences dissent

within the agency, returning to D.C. for a time before heading to Greece to work as a counter-terrorism operations officer. In 2001, following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Kiriakou was named chief of counterterrorist operations in Pakistan.

In his 2012 memoir, The Reluctant Spy: My Secret Life in the CIA’s War on Terror, Kiriakou writes that he co-led a series of military raids on al-Qaeda safe houses, and that he headed the 2002 raid that resulted in the capture of Abu Zubaydah, who was at the time thought to be al-Qaeda’s third highest official.

He notes that his career with the CIA was marked with awards — several Exceptional Performance Awards, a Sustained Superior Performance Award, the Counterterrorism Service Medal and the State Department’s Meritorious Honor Award — but in 2004, Kiriakou left the CIA to spend more time with his children. He’d spent 14 years traveling, mostly to the Middle East, and he knew that was never going to change.

The day after he resigned from the CIA, Kiriakou went to work as an intelligence consultant for an accounting firm in D.C. He was at his desk at Deloitte and Touche three years later when he got a call from journalist Brian Ross, a correspondent for ABC News.

“He said he had a source that told him I’d tortured Abu Zubaydah,” Kiriakou says. “I said I had never laid a hand on him or anyone else. I was opposed to the torture program since its inception. He said — and I later learned this is an old reporter’s trick — ‘You’re welcome to come on the show and defend yourself,’ and I said I’d think about it.”

(And maybe not all of that is 100 percent true, as you’ll see soon.)

But Kiriakou had to think fast.

“A few days later [President Bush] says [at a press conference], ‘If there is torture, it’s the result of a rouge CIA officer,’ And I thought, ‘Oh my God, they’re gonna pin this on me.’”

He called Ross and agreed to an interview.

• • • • On December 10, 2007, John Kiriakou sat down for an interview with Brian Ross on World News with Charles Gobson.

He told Ross what he knew to be true at that time: soon after his capture in 2002, Abu Zubaydah divulged actionable information — tips that can lead to action, such as thwarted attacks or to the location of a high-ranking official — after a single instance of waterboarding that latest no longer than 35 seconds.

To be clear: Kiriakou’s statement was not the first time the public became aware of the U.S. government’s use of torture. The week prior to Kiriakou’s interview with Ross, the CIA admitted to destroying videotape of an interrogation of one of the waterboarded detainees in 2005.

In his interview on ABC, Kiriakou said he had no idea that Zubaydah’s interrogation was being recorded or that the tapes had been destroyed.

While Kiriakou never participated in or was present for torture against any suspect, he, at least back then, stood behind the agency’s decision (see Kiriakou’s first statement to Ross), claiming other techniques would have cost too much time, and maintaining that as a result, Zubaydah revealed informaSee PATRIOTISM Page 16

tion that “disrupted a number of attacks, maybe dozens of attacks.”

A 2009 governmental report later proved the CIA had waterboarded Zubaydah 83 times. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who admitted to planning the 9/11 attacks, was waterboarded 147 times. The report stated that no actionable intelligence was gained from using “enhanced interrogation” tactics on Zubaydah.

Kiriakou maintained that the information he gave ABC was secondhand, and that it conveyed exactly what he knew about torture practices and their effectiveness at that time.

When the interview was over, Kiriakou went back to business as usual — but unbeknownst to him, the CIA had filed a crimes report with the Department of Justice’s National Security Division, claiming Kiriakou’s statement’s during his ABC interview violated federal secrecy laws. As Kiriakou gave more interviews, the agency continued to file reports without his knowledge.

When Kiriakou became aware that he was being investigated, he hired a criminal defense attorney, but reviews of Kiriakou’s interviews turned up no red flags.

However, the CIA’s investigation continued through the end of the Bush Administration.

And then they dropped it.

He reflects on Obama’s presidency and sees nothing to be proud of.

“I saw a statistic recently: in 2002, George W. Bush killed two people with drones. In August [2105], Barak Obama killed 425 people with drones. Is that really the country we want to be? Is that the party the Democrats want to be?”

• • • • In conducting interviews during the later part of 2007 and through 2008, Kiriakou was contacted by Scott Shane, a reporter with the New York Times who was working on a story about the interrogation of Abu Zabaydah. Shane’s main interest was Deuce Martinez, a former CIA officer who had worked directly with interrogators who had waterboarded detainees. Kiriakou had worked with Martinez after 9/11, and gave Shane a business card with contact information for Martinez.

Shane wrote a detailed piece focusing on Martinez’s role in questioning Zubaydah. Martinez had declined an interview, but his role in the use of torture was confirmed by a number of “colleagues” who asked to remain anonymous.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had come to find it was Kiriakou who provided Shane with Martinez’s name by subpoenaing emails, not only between Shane and Kiriakou, but also between Kiriakou and other journalists, including Matthew Cole, who was working on a book about a CIA operation involving an al-Qaeda suspect in Milan, Italy.

Emails showed that Kiriakou had provided Cole with the name of an undercover CIA agent.

And that’s when things really went pear-shaped.

It wasn’t until 2012 that any charges were formally brought against Kiriakou, but they came — five felony counts. One for his role as a source for Shane, another from misleading statements he allegedly made to the CIA’s Publications Review Board while seeking clearance to publish his memoir. The other three charges arose from Kiriakou’s emails with Cole.

He was tried in the Eastern District Court of Virginia (EDVA), which is often referred to as the “espionage court” or the “rocket docket.” Both Edward Snowden and Jeffrey Sterling were charged in EDVA, where Kiriakou says, “the deck is really stacked.”

On the day of Kiriakou’s arrest he got a call from Daniel Ellsberg, the former military analyst who released the Pentagon Papers. Ellsberg was charged under the Espionage Act for disclosing secret U.S. military documents related to the Vietnam War in 1971.

news “[Ellsberg] said he had read all the news accounts of my arrest and he wanted to offer up a legal suggestion,” Kiriakou says. “He said, ‘Is it a crime to reveal the name of someone who is committing a crime? The answer is no, it’s not a crime.’”

Ellsberg has said since that whistleblowers like Kiriakou, Chelsea Manning, Edward Snowden and Jeffrey Sterling were aggressively punished, while former CIA director David Petraeus — who leaked classified military information to his biographer and mistress, Paula Broadwell, in 2012 — was given a virtual “hand slap” with two years probation and no jail time.

Ellsberg wasn’t the only person in Kiriakou’s corner — Jesselyn Radack, who disclosed what she believed to be an ethics violation in the FBI’s interrogation of John Walker Lindh, took on Kiriakou’s case pro bono. Thomas Drake, the former senior executive director of the National Security Agency who openly challenged how the NSA collects information on U.S. citizens, also openly supported Kiriakou.

Kiriakou makes a point to note that John Cusack called his wife regularly to check on her, and that Roseanne Barr gave him $5,000 for legal fees.

But despite the support, there was no getting out of jail for Kiriakou — at least not in the EDVA. “There’s a saying that a jury in the EDVA would convict a bologna sandwich,” Kiriakou says.

He was advised to take a plea bargain, a compromise that left Kiriakou feeling defeated, but he had little choice.

“I’ve got five kids at home, I have a million dollar legal bill. I still owe them $880,000, which I’ll never be able to afford to pay,” he says. “But I lost my house, I lost my pension. My wife lost her job; she was a CIA officer and she was fired the day of my arrest just because she was married to me. This is something the Justice Department counts on. They know you can’t pay these legal bills.”

So he took the plea bargain and served his time. (Kiriakou says, for the record, that no one who actually tortured a detainee was charged, nor was the CIA executive who destroyed videotapes of torture.)

He gave interviews from prison, but says he found “very little support from the mainstream media.” Instead of calling him a whistleblower, Kiriakou says he was often referred to as a “leaker,” a term that “infuriates” him.

But it took time for Kiriakou to see himself as a whistleblower. When Jesselyn Radack, who specializes in whistleblower cases, accepted his case pro bono, Kiriakou told her he saw Boulder Weekly

himself as “just an idiot.” “‘There’s a legal definition of whistleblowing,’” Kiriakou says Radack assured him. “It’s bringing to light any evidence of waste, fraud, abuse, illegality or threat to the public health or public safety. And she said, ‘That’s exactly what you did.’”

• • • • Today Kiriakou works as an associate fellow at the Washington-based think tank institute for Policy Studies.

He adds his experiences to analysis on

ethics and international affairs, intelligence and current events in the Middle East, Greece, Turkey and Cyprus.

He also travels as a speaker, presenting his perspective on whistleblowing, torture policy (he now says there’s no place for it in American intelligence techniques) and prison reform (there’s more to it than mandatory minimum sentencing).

But one of his main messages is more broadly aimed at getting Americans to stand up and fight for

“It’s up to us to make sure our government acts ethically, morally and legally and we’re not doing that,” he says. “If elected officials won’t do it, then we need to do it and we need to do it by being litigious. We need to sue at every opportunity and we need to clog the courts up with these issues.

We’ve given away so many of our rights incrementally and we need to get them back. God knows government’s not gonna give ’em back to us.”

news CITY OF BOULDER RECOMMENDS CONTROVERSIAL NEXTDOOR.COM

n what the City calls an effort to increase community engagement, Boulder recently started using the neighborhood social media platform Nextdoor.com to communicate with residents.

Since its 2011 launch, the website is used in one in three neighborhoods across the country, with 101 neighborhoods and 8,100 residents currently registered in Boulder.

Neighbors already use the service to list local recommendations, post about missing pets and talk about community issues. And more than 20 percent of Boulder users post in the crime and safety section, which is consistent with users around the country.

For that, Nextdoor.com has also been dubbed the neighborhood watch of the digital age as neighbors can and do report any suspicious activity they perceive.

And it’s this use that has come under scrutiny in recent months across the nation.

Recently, a resident in Lafayette, who didn’t want his name used, contacted Boulder Weekly with reports that he noticed suspicious behavior posts on the site every time he walked through the neighborhood he’s lived in the last 15 years. As a person of color, he claims he had never experienced racial profiling until his neighbors started using Nextdoor.

And he’s not the only one.

Reports from Sacramento, Oakland and Washington D.C., among others cities, show that although the site is intended to foster community, it has had the opposite effect, revealing racial prejudices among neighbors who hardly know each other. Take this post from an Oakland neighborhood as reported in the San Francisco Chronicle. “My boyfriend just saw two suspicious African-American men in a car. They drove their car up the street, made a U-turn, and parked.”

While the social networking site requires residency confirmation and each neighborhood’s message boards are private, there is little regulation over how Nextdoor gets used. But since October 2015, the company’s CEO has spoken out against racial profiling on the site, stating that it goes against the user guidelines. He also acknowledges that racial profiling has and does happen on the site.

Furthermore, a Jan. 27 blog post attributed to the Nextdoor team acknowledges that some of the mesBoulder Weekly

sages posted to the site “are having a negative impact on people’s lives.” The post pledges a long-term commitment to ending racial profiling on the site and announced a new way to flag posts as such, as well as more explicit guidelines for posting in the crime and safety section to focus on behavior, “not just sex and race.” The racial profiling flag also alerts community leaders and the Nextdoor support team so that the offensive comments can be removed as quickly as possible.

Boulder Mayor Suzanne Jones, who personally uses Nextdoor in her neighborhood on the Hill, says she was unaware of the racial profiling issues associated with the site. She also hasn’t seen any posts in her neighborhood that she would describe as racial profiling.

“But I’ll be honest, any mechanism that is used to reach out to people can be abused and is,” she says. “I haven’t heard any specifics about this mechanism being abused, but I assume it’s like all others, that someone could take advantage of it.”

Amanda Nagl, neighborhood liaison for the City of Boulder who made the original suggestion to use Nextdoor, also wasn’t familiar with any questions of racial profiling through Nextdoor, but says she’ll look more into the issue. Plus, she says, there are some limitations to the City’s use of the social platform. Although City officials can post in specific neighborhoods and interact with residents who comment on that post, they cannot see other neighborhood discussions or communications, leaving the private conversations between neighbors, just that — private.

“We don’t have any control over how neighbors are communicating,” she says. “We can’t access that level of information to know if [racial profiling] is happening or not.”

And yet the City has encouraged residents and

neighborhoods to join the controversial site.

Nagl also says she has seen other instances where contentious comments are resolved by other neighbors chiming in. “It sort of policed itself,” Nagl says. “I think there is some social norming that occurs.”

With regards to public safety, the City plans to post about crime trends and different ways a neighborhood might be impacted by local crime, while providing factual information to a conversation that is more than likely already going to be happening on the website, Nagl says.

For example, the City used Nextdoor this week to alert residents about two stolen cars in the Whittier neighborhood, including a message about precautions people can take to prevent theft, like locking car doors and keeping windows rolled up.

“We heard loud and clear last fall during the election season that people want to be more engaged, which is a good thing. ...” Jones says. “One thing I think we can depend on in Boulder is that if somebody gets out of line, people will rise up and let them know. From the City’s point of view, there’s not that risk [of racial profiling] from the city engagement side as there might be, I guess, at the neighborhood level. But we’ll all keep our eyes open.”

RESOURCE GOING MAINSTREAM The Boulder resale center sets waste diversion record in 2015

hat does 3.8 million pounds look like? It could look like three Antonov An-225 airplanes, the heaviest planes ever made; or like a massive herd of fully-grown male African elephants, about 293 of them in all.

Here’s perhaps a better analogy: 3.8 million pounds is about the weight of six two-story, 2,500-square-foot (that’s “average-sized” in the U.S.) houses. It’s also the total weight of all the homebuilding materials ReSource kept out of the landfill in 2015, setting a new record for waste diversion through its materials resale center in Boulder. That’s a major accomplishment for ReSource, double the total weight of its diverted waste in 2006 and a 350,000 pound increase over 2014. And it’s a milestone for the City of Boulder as well,

where about 36 percent of all landfilled waste is construction material.

The landfill’s hypothetical six-house loss was ReSource’s customers’ gain: whether homeowners making improvements, entrepreneurs furnishing new businesses, backyard farmers constructing raised beds and chicken coops or minimalists building tiny homes, they gave millions of pounds of materials sold at ReSource new life.

“We make it easy to conserve,” says Neal Lurie, president of the Center for ReSource Conservation, the nonprofit that operates ReSource. “People don’t necessarily have to think, ‘I’m saving a resource.’ They think, ‘I’m getting a highquality material for a great price.’”

A large percentage of that material comes to ReSource through deconstruction projects. Under the City of Boulder’s

Zero Waste Initiative and Green Points program, anyone demolishing a home must commit to keeping at least 65 percent of the total weight of structural waste out of the landfill. Contractors and homeowners can call on ReSource to assess the reusability of the materials in a home on the chopping block, and to then haul the materials to its resale facility, all for free.

This saves time and money, complies with regulations and keeps waste out of the landfill and homeowners can claim the tax deductible donation.

In 2015, “deconstruction services” were ReSource’s fastest growing source of donated materials — about 35 percent of total donations. And even though ReSource sells its reclaimed materials at up to 75 percent less than retail value, it still makes business sense for the organization to use its staff and time to offer the free service.

At least, most of the time.

“If we get a phone call from Estes Park from someone who says they have one door to haul away, well, that might not be feasible,” says Brandon Hill, senior manager at ReSource. On the positive side, he says, more and more folks are in fact coming from beyond the Boulder city limits to both donate to and purchase from ReSource. Wherever they’re from, they’re showing that whether for economics, aesthetics or otherwise, reuse is going mainstream.

Andy Clark, owner of the new Moxie Bread Company in Louisville, was a regular customer while he built his bakery’s interior, selecting materials to evoke just the right rustic look and farmhouse feel. Boulder artist Mitch Levin frequents ReSource to find unique salvageable metal and materials for his renowned sculptures and other artwork. Adriana Galue Manrique, local EMT and true do-it-yourselfer, turned a gutted 300-square-foot space into a fully functioning tiny home in Ward,

spending just $34 per square foot and using only repurposed materials.

“We have a guy who comes up sometimes from Chihuahua, Mexico to buy materials for his project,” Hill says. “It’s worth it for him to make that drive with a trailer.” Hill himself finished his entire apartment with ReSource materials, he says, for just a few hundred dollars. And if customers don’t have the tools they need to complete their project, they can rent from among the more than 700 tools in ReSource’s tool library for just a few dollars a day (but they probably shouldn’t take them all the way to Chihuahua).

Of course, not everything can be “ReSourced” easily. “Windows are tricky,” Hill says; unlike doors, built to standard sizes, windows come in all dimensions and not always the ones people are looking for.

On the intake side, ReSource won’t accept things like older plumbing fixtures that may contain lead or old appliances that are energy hogs. “We’d rather scrap those and take them off the streets,” Hill says; ReSource endeavors to exhaust the nonlandfill options for all the materials it can’t process, appliances and otherwise, before throwing them away.

Lumber will be one of ReSource’s major challenges in 2016.

“We currently have more lumber than we could possibly process,” Lurie says, even with 16 full-time employees plus a fleet of volunteers and community service crews. That’s why the organization is piloting a new “denailing program” to efficiently remove the countless nails lodged in donated lumber, rendering more of the reclaimed wood usable, more quickly.

As with so many things Boulder, it’s hard to say whether ReSource would flourish in another city — one without the unique mix of creative juices, conservation priorities, Western go-getterism and housing pressures. But no matter, Hill says: “Boulder is really the perfect place for us.”

Researchers from the California Institute of Technology may have found Pluto’s replacement.

Konstantin Batygin and Michael Brown have found evidence of the existence of a ninth planet by using computer simulations.

The planet has not been observed directly, as it orbits 20 times farther from the sun on average than does Neptune.

To be considered a planet, an orbiting body must be gravitationally dominant. The new planet lies inside the Kuiper Belt, a region of icy bodies — including Pluto — beyond Neptune.

Six other celestial bodies in the Kuiper Belt have observed orbits in near same patterns, which led the researchers to believe something must be affecting their orbits, i.e., Planet Nine.

Based on the data thus far, scientists believe Planet Nine could be the fifth largest planet after Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Planet Nine is believed to have a mass of about 10 times that of Earth and 5,000 times that of Pluto.

A similar situation happened with the discovery of Neptune. And careful observation of Uranus in the 19th century indicated another celestial body was influencing its orbit.

Brown is also known for his work in getting Pluto demoted from a planet to dwarf planet on account of its size. His early work in identifying small worlds in the outer solar system (and the discovery of Eris, another dwarf planet originally believed to be larger than Pluto) led the International Astronomical Union to redefine “planet.”

PA ANNOUNCES NEW REGULATIONS ON METHANE EMISSIONS

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf announced new rules to cut methane pollution from the oil and gas sector across the state. These rules seek to cut emissions from leaks and waste that occur during the process of obtaining, transporting and processing of natural gas. This is an important step for Pennsylvania, as the state produces the second most natural gas of any U.S. state, after Texas.

The framework of the Wikimedia Commons/ Nicholas Tonelli plan is provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, and has a broad reach on new regulations and permits for the oil and gas industry. By including regulations for new and old sources of oil and gas, as well as transmission and distribution of the products, the state is attempting to regulate natural gas at every step, creating guidelines for newly developed sources while keeping existing sources up to par.

“We are uniquely positioned to be a national leader in addressing climate change while supporting and ensuring responsible energy development, creating new jobs, and protecting public health and our environment,” Wolf said in a press release.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), while accounting for 10 percent of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, methane is much more efficient at trapping radiation than carbon dioxide, giving it a comparably larger effect on climate change. The EPA also reports that the effects of methane are 25 times stronger than carbon dioxide in a 100-year period. As Boulder Weekly has previously reported, several other leading scientists argue methane is 100 times more potent than carbon dioxide.

Natural gas systems are the second largest emitter of methane in the country, not far behind domestic livestock.

The Clean Air Council reports that electricity generation accounts for 82 percent of toxic air pollution in Pennsylvania, which ranks second in toxic air pollution behind Ohio. The stricter regulations on methane emissions aim bring the state one step closer to clean air.

W

hat do you do when you’ve got a couple of weeks to kill, you speak Spanish fluently and you bike like cars were never invented?

You bike nearly 850 miles across Cuba, obviously. At least that’s what Boulder’s own Ryan Van Duzer did last fall.

Not that he’d ever been to Cuba before, and not that he really had a plan beyond cycling east to west, from Santiago de Cuba to Havana. But that was kind of the point.

The bike advocate/TV personality/ travel journalist/filmmaker usually has a pretty tight itinerary when he goes on an adventure these days — that’s just what happens when adventuring becomes your job.

“It’s not often I get to do something with no itinerary. It’s usually like, we’re gonna have lunch here, dinner here, be back at seven in the morning,” Van Duzer says. “This trip was like going back to my roots. I didn’t have an itinBoulder Weekly

erary. Every single night I would roll out a map and think, ‘I could get to this city and this city.’ I put [the trip] together every single day, and it was really fun because it was totally free and to me, that’s the essence of travel: you don’t know what’s gonna happen or who you’re gonna meet.”

Van Duzer has done a number of long-distance bike tours across Latin America, starting with a bike ride from La Esperanza, Honduras, to Boulder after he finished a two-year stint in the Peace Corps. That trip, he says, was his first experience riding long-distance, and it catapulted his career as a travel documentarian.

It all began in 2006 with a cable access show on Channel 54 in Boulder, and it parlayed into appearances on National Geographic’s 13-part web series about trekking through the Himalayas, dozens and dozens of videos for the Travel Channel, a bicycle travel series for the History Channel, three sponsored bike trips across the

U.S. and a hosting gig on an international contest called “Paradise Hunter.”

And those are just the highlights.

Van Duzer says he’s wanted to ride his bike across Cuba for a while; folks had told him it was a great place to ride a bike, but perhaps not for the reasons many Americans might think.

“It’s incredibly safe,” he says. “There are no narcos, there are no guns, there’s no violence, no gangs, none of that stuff that plagues most of Latin America. It’s easy to breathe there. You’re not looking over your shoulder. I’ve been robbed in Guatemala and Honduras. In Cuba if someone’s chasing you, it’s to talk to you or take you dancing.”

While Cuba’s terrain is mostly flat with rolling plains, the main island has rugged hills and mountains. (Cuba, for the record, is an archipelago.) The Carribean nation has three major mountain ranges, with its highest peak, Real de Turquino, rising 6,578 feet above sea level. A number of the large cities Van Duzer rode through — Santiago de Cuba, Guantánamo, Sancti Spirítus and Cienfuegos — are home to the highest peaks in the country.

Perhaps more important to a road biker than varied terrain offering mountain views and sea-level sunsets, is the relative absence of cars.

“It’s very expensive for people to have cars [in Cuba],” Van Duzer says.

“When I was flying in, I looked down and there were barely any cars. It was almost like a zombie apocalypse. I had done some research beforehand on blogs, and people said the same thing — there’s not much traffic. As a bike tourer, it’s nice to not have traffic zipping by you all day long.”

Fully embracing the spontaneity of this trip, Van Duzer put a call out on Facebook to see if someone would donate a bike that could A) handle an 800-plus mile ride and B) not return after the journey was over.

Van Duzer planned to give the bike away at the end of the trip, and, like the rest of his excursion through Cuba, who was to receive the bike was really up to fate.

“I did always know I was gonna give the bicycle away,” he says. “And I knew the world would present this person to me.”

A friend offered Van Duzer a full suspension mountain bike by Giant, which he gladly accepted. The fit certainly wasn’t perfect (a bit small), and riding a mountain bike on paved roads requires more rotations than a road bike. Artist Julie McCormick paints burning violins to question the prevalence of technology

T

he violin is iconic. Whether because of its lovely sound or its elegant design, the violin conjures of feelings of tradition and beauty.

Which begs the question: Why would artist Julie McCormick set them on fire?

She did so for her multimedia project Arrangement for Silent Orchestra, now on display at the Firehouse Art Gallery through Feb. 28. Silent Orchestra consists of several large scale paintings that chronicle a bonfire of violins from dusk until dawn. Along with the paintings is a 45-minute video of the actual burning McCormick did back in 2010.

Juxtaposed with the paintings, which dwell on single moments, the video allows the viewer to experience the fire in real time.

Surrounding the paintings are pillars with violin cases displaying the remains of the torched instruments. Some are filled with ashes and small fragments of what was, while others are partially intact, adorned with some charred edges and blackened areas. Acting like a casket, the cases hold the remnants of the violin, adding to the haunting feeling of the exhibit.

The original idea for the project came about organically back in 2009, when she got the image of a pile of violins.

before. Music was an essential part of her household; as the only child of a piano teacher, McCormick was tasked to choose an instrument and in second grade she chose the violin.

“I enjoyed it at first. Then as many adolescents do, you have different interests, and you lose interest in certain things, and I matured. I got more interested in visual art, and I eventually left the violin behind,” she says. “Anything you aspire to do and then decide not to do sticks with you or follows you in a way.”

McCormick was interested in her own past with the violin, but also society’s.

She says it’s an integral part of our culture and it holds a different meaning for everyone. It’s a handmade object that transcends musical genres and socioeconomic class, McCormick says. It’s a tradition that can be passed through generations. Even its parts — the body and the neck — are synonymous to human features.

For Silent Orchestra, McCormick chose only to use violins that were out of commission or beyond repair. She spent nine months collecting them from all over the country, finishing with almost 100. People were enthusiastic with her project, and were happy to donate violins rather than discard them in their own way (this included as decorations for walls or book shelves, and one family who was using a violin for target practice).

“The very first instrument I collected was this horribly painted thing. It looked like one of those plastic blue violins, and it had been cracked,” she says. “But the individual who gave it to me was psyched to give the violin away so that it could live on beyond his use for it.”

In the first painting, “Prelude,” the violins are set up in a discarded stack. When grouped together, it’s inevitable to ponder the life of each instrument: Who owned it? How many people owned it? What did it play? Where was it made? With each question, the individual instruments become even more significant, and as they lie in the dirt the image seems wrong.

“Part of what my work has always been about is taking these objects out of their conventional contexts for them to be reconsidered,” McCormick says. “Even piling them up, they look dumped by a dump truck. They’re ready for burial.”

as upsetting as burning books or other precious items. But it’s that reaction that drives home McCormick’s point.

“Burning can be such a horrendous act, especially when done deliberately, but what’s beyond those acts is that symbolism,” she says. “Destroying something brings the attention back to it.”

Her statement is meant to highlight the demise of traditional craft practices because of technological advancements.

McCormick says she sees a push toward STEM areas — science, technology, engineering and math — instead of the arts. She notes her home state of Arizona as one of the lowest ranked for arts funding.

“This project to me is largely about the relationship between increasing technology advancement and diminishing cultural heritage,” she says. “The tradition of music practice and artistic practice can get cast aside and exchanged for technology.”

Without art there can be a lack of creativity, innovation and vehicle for expression. McCormick does see the value of technology in increasing art’s possibility and accessibility, but she’s calling for a balance. And you can see this balance in Silent Orchestra with her inclusion of photography and video.

The video also provides a soundtrack for the exhibit. While looking at the paintings you can hear the crack and pop of the fire, which helps the paintings come to life and adds to the eerie vibe of the exhibit. And notably, as the name suggests, Silent Orchestra is devoid of violin music. At first McCormick was planning on the instrument playing in the background, but the sound of the fire was much more powerful.

But McCormick does have a musical element to the show, and for those interested, she’ll be accompanying the exhibit with a live violin performance on Feb. 28. She’ll play Beethoven’s Romance for Violin in F Major, Op. 50. She chose the piece because it has elements that mirror her work, and it falls into the romanticism era, which is the style she used in her paintings.

This live portion of the project required McCormick to brush off her violin and relearn her skills, which she saw as a crucial piece to the project. McCormick started taking violin classes and practiced before every painting session. She found that the routine helped her focus.

“Typically when I would go into the studio and start painting, it would take a good hour to warm up to painting to get in the mode and get rid of all that baggage that was in your mind when you start a studio day,” she says. “But I found by starting the day with music practice, ultimately what would happen is I’d get through all that [mental] noise with music. “Images sort of settle in your subconscious and ask you to revisit them over time,” she says. “That’s what I think is most powerful — when someone is shaping the iconography that means something in contemporary culture ... and how that affects the decision they make in their own lives.”

he Boulder Philharmonic and composer Missy Mazzoli will have a busy week Feb. 6-12.

Mazzoli, who visits Boulder courtesy of a Music Alive Composer Residency, will participate in a workshop with University of Colorado Boulder composition students, a Café Phil open rehearsal, a “Meet the Artists” luncheon and a musical stargazing hike (see the list of public events).

That’s in addition to the concerts: “Who is Missy Mazzoli?” and “Spheres of Influence,” a concert by the Boulder Phil and music director Michael Butterman featuring the premiere of the orchestral version of Mazzoli’s Sinfonia (for Orbiting Spheres).

The full program of the Boulder Phil concert Friday will be Mazzoli’s Sinfonia, the Symphony No. 9 of Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky’s Mozartiana and the Mendelssohn Concerto. The Tuesday afternoon Soundscape concert will feature several of Mazzoli’s pieces, performed by Mazzoli, the Altius String Quartet and other local musicians, interspersed with movements of the Bach Partita in D minor for solo violin, performed by Boulder Phil concertmaster and CU music professor Charles Wetherbee.

This unusual feast of music new and old was launched when the Boulder Phil was selected for the residency program. Butterman explains that Mazzoli’s name was on a list of available composers.

“I have never done any of her music,” he says, “but I’ve been interest-

ed in it and thought this would be a good opportunity.”

Next, Mazzoli talked to Butterman about the orchestra and the local community.

“I wasn’t interested in having them perform something that I had written for other orchestras,” she says. “I wanted to create something new.”

When Butterman described the orchestra’s programs combining music and nature, Mazzoli thought of her Sinfonia (for Orbiting Spheres), originally written as a chamber piece for the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Because it is about watching the night sky, she thought it would be a good fit for Boulder, and she wanted to extend the piece for full orchestra.

With this version, “I feel that [the music] has reached the form it was meant to take,” she says. “I think of it as a different piece.”

Mazzoli admits to many influences on her work. “It’s become a cliché to say I have many interests, but I think it’s natural growing up in the ’80s,” she says.

“The whole palette of sound is available for composers, and I think of them as tools I can use.”

In the case of Sinfonia, those tools include techniques and ornamental gestures from the Baroque period. It was that retrospective quality that led to the overall theme of the concert.

“I began thinking about music that has influenced my music of the past,” Butterman says. That led to Tchaikovsky’s Mozartiana, orchestral arrangements of music by Mozart.

His latest album, Re-Twonked, — a remix of his previous album, Twonk — reached the rank of top five dance albums on iTunes. BRILLZ, who creates electronic bass music, has collaborated with some of the top electronic music DJs in the U.S., including releasing an EP with Diplo. BRILLZ’s hip-hop dance background opened the door for his exploration of the electronic dance music (EDM) world. BRILLZ makes music that incorporates elements of hip-hip, trap and EDM. This up-and-coming DJ has a busy schedule ahead of him. He will be performing at Ultra Music Festival this year and taking his tour overseas to perform on stages across Europe.

Week upon week at the dorm she watched him working at a table with a pencil in his teeth, eating with a stack of books and papers, reading while he walked. His hair was groups of angry men, his sweaty cuffs were wrinkled at his forearms: he seemed to be loved by no one.

But always there were pairs of houseflies hovering above him, landing on his nest of notes, trailing him as if with streamers and sound.

A farm girl, she knew to follow the flies: they’ll take you to the milk just pulled to the pail, to the cow’s haunch where the meat will one day be sweetest, the swelled pond, the unlatched gate. Everything, she knew, was in those notebooks he would carry: her future, the distances of islands, poles and stars, the reason for the network of men’s follies, how to spend the night.

The long of it

‘The Big Short’ tells an important story

A

bout a decade ago, a bunch of rich assholes collapsed the world’s economy because they were dumb, evil and greedy. They didn’t go to jail, not because they weren’t icky, bad criminals, but because their crimes were boring and hard to understand. You rob a bank with a gun, you go to jail. You rob all the banks in the world with bundled subprime mortgages, the government will cover your IOUs. The Big Short is an attempt to explain what went down in the most pleasing way possible, hence the inclusion of Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie.

Picking up a few years before the housing market made a diaper deposit, writer/ director Adam McKay’s film focuses on the few folks who saw the collapse coming.

Michael Burry (Christian Bale), an MD-turned-investor, is depicted as a one-eyed kook who never wears shoes, rocks out to metal at all times and saw the crisis coming by actually reading what was in the mortgages being traded. Mark Baum (Steve Carell), a cynical investor whose brother had recently killed himself, was on the right side of the As educational as it is entertaining, The Big Short’s lack of emotional insight into victims is only overcome by its brisk housing bubble pacing and crazy cast. bursting because he distrusted everyone in charge of everything. Jamie Shipley (Finn Wittrock) and Charlie Geller ( John Magaro) took positions against home values because their small firm philosophy was predicated on investing in “bad things nobody wants to think about.”

The crux of what constitutes the film’s “action” involves Jared Vennett (Gosling) peddling the sale of “credit default swaps” to Baum. Meanwhile, Burry waits to see if his prediction pays off and Shipley and Geller convince former trader Ben Rickert (Brad Pitt) to help them invest their money. McKay spices things up as much as humanly possible, complete with Selena Gomez and Anthony Bourdain explaining complex banking issues with metaphors and sex appeal. I’ll let you decide which celeb went with which strategy.

The Big Short is a really weird, detached way to come at the crisis. It neither focuses on the criminals who ruined everything nor the victims who paid for it. It’s odd that one of the few major works of pop culture to really engage the most significant financial event of the last century did so by examining those who actually came out ahead after the fan was introduced to the shit. At one point, Rickert tears Shipley and Geller apart for celebrating their investment, but that could well have been a condemnation made of McKay and his film too.

That said, it’s rare to be both substantive and entertaining, and The Big Short manages both. You’ll leave with both a firm understanding of tranche-bundled CODs and a strange fascination with Carell’s wig. What’s lacking in empathy and pathos for reallife victims of the collapse is made up for in eccentric character work and high-level oversight of the entirety of the situation. Oh, and for the second time this year (the first being Suffragette), what stuck with me most was the text at the end of the film, which mentions Burry’s current investment positions involve water shortage. t was one of those moments. The kind where two historical figures crossed paths briefly and a simple exchange carries meaning greater than one could have perceived. He was Bob Dylan, already a major player in the rock ‘n’ roll world, and she was Janis Joplin, a young singer with the world in her sights.

“I’m going to be famous,” Joplin told Dylan. “We’re all gonna be famous,” he responded.

Dylan’s retort turned out prophetic, and not just for himself or for Joplin, but for the whole of the ’60s counter-culture musical scene.

Janis: Little Girl Blue — the latest in a seemingly endless string of musical docs and narratives that fixates on that particular era of pop/rock music — traces the all-too short life of the singer with the bluesy heart. Directed by Amy Berg, Little Girl Blue assembles talking head interviews, archival footage and Joplin’s letters to her family to provide a portrait of that iconic voice and the ragged life that led to all that pain.

From Joplin’s humble beginnings in Port Arthur, Texas, to her pursuit of a musical career in San Francisco and death at the age of 27 from a drug overdose, Berg peers into the private life of a public figure and finds the girl who desired fame.

Joplin found it in her bands — Big Brother and the Holding Company, Kozmic Blues Band, Full Tilt Boogie Band — and the men whose paths intersected with hers, both romantically and artistically — Dick Cavett, Jerry Garcia and David Niehaus. Plus, of course, the booze and drugs that Joplin was capable of putting away with a Herculean effort. Joplin certainly knew how to live it up, and it showed.

Looking at images of her, it is baffling to realize that she was only in her mid-twenties. Her music suggests that she lived twice that, with thrice the heartbreak.

Many aspects of Joplin’s life are far too common. As many of the interview subjects point out, her self-medication was due to a lack of romantic connections. They rely on old clichés: “she loved too much” or “that’s the price you pay, for doing art on that level.” But these are excuses not the reason why Joplin died of a drug overdose.

The real tragedy of Joplin’s life was hidden in plain sight for the whole world to hear.

Her pain was in her music, and Joplin exploited it to great effect.

Out of that short-lived career, a long grasp of empathy emerged, one that continues to connect with listeners 40-plus years later. It’s the sort of music people turn to when they are down and out and need to hear from someone who knows.

But when the listener is done feeling sad, it is just as easy for them to turn the record off as it was to put it on. Joplin was denied that luxury. Her pain extended far beyond the confines of a three-and-a-half minute pop song. For many artists, the act of creation is a chance to exorcise personal demons. For Joplin, it only provided more fuel for the fire.

Big Red F expands with their take on a classic fried chicken joint

W

hat I like most about GoodBird Kitchen, and what I like about its brother, The Post Brewing Company, and indeed what I like about its Big Red F cousins, is the ambiance.

Through design, music, beer and staff, Big Red F restaurants look like Big Red F restaurants. They manage to expertly pay homage to the style and culture of the food they’re cooking, while not mimicking or sensationalizing it. In other words, Big Red F restaurants are like well-done covers of classics that transform the original like “Proud Mary” or “All Along the Watchtower,” instead of cheap off-tune karaoke imitations.

GoodBird Kitchen then puts their spin on classic fried chicken joints of the Delta like the incomparable Courtesy of Big Red F Gus’ in Memphis and the nouveau shops in New York, D.C. and San Francisco. In fact, the folks at Big Red F spent months visiting these places on a nationwide fried chicken search in order to perfect their recipe. The chicken has been honed and hailed at The Post in Lafayette, and now it’s time for its close up in Longmont.

What they brought to Boulder County is fried chicken and sides that don’t quite surpass original varieties, but adequately fill the void of good, locally fried chicken that many have lamented.

When you walk into GoodBird Kitchen, you’ll be prompted to get in line and order at a counter. There’s a separate door for takeout orders, and the friendly

counterperson will likely offer you a beer sample while you wait.

In the main line, you look up at a menu, under which you can see a smoky kitchen, and the bright light from back there makes you realize how dark the overhead Grandma’shouse light fixtures out front are. But the light just feels right; a small triumph for the interior designer.

The place, in fact, looks and feels like a side-of-theroad chicken shack. If it didn’t have such an illustrious pedigree, or if you didn’t know about it, you truly might mistake it for a decades-old shop.

And the food certainly doesn’t do anything to dissuade that opinion.

The chicken really is the same as what you’ll get at The Post — fried, it’s crispy and the skin is slightly thicker than other varieties. The flour used is gluten-free, and the chicken is touted as humanely-raised and all natural. I prefer their roasted chicken to their fried chicken — it’s always just a little juicier, and maybe it’s in my head but I feel like I get more meat. At a recent large dinner at GoodBird Kitchen, that opinion was confirmed.

But what separates GoodBird from The Post is

the creation of several new sandwiches and sides. Two standouts were the Nashville hot fried chicken sandwich and the deviled eggs with pork cheek.

So, first of all, Nashville hot is an old style of spicy fried chicken that has been popular in select southern cities and particularly black communities for decades.

It has exploded in popularity over the past few years, culminating in this ridiculous KFC-branded hot chicken, which I’m sure is fine, whatever.

GoodBird’s hot chicken sandwich is really good, and hot. The sauce is bright and vinegary, and the chicken skin is crunchy. The meat is thin, but moist and satisfying. There are a lot of flavors in the sandwich, including coleslaw, pickles and a remoulade-like sauce. If you have high taste sensitivity, it might be too much toward the end, but even so, if you’re hungry, the whole thing works well enough to scarf down.

I’m glad for the deviled egg, in general. Its comeback is complete. GoodBird’s is large and fresh, with sweet yolk cream in the middle, light seasoning and a crispy, robust morsel of pork cheek on the top. I could’ve eaten only those for a meal.

No matter what I say, GoodBird is going to be popular, and it should be. They do chicken well, they do beer very well, and they make the dining experience comfortable, affordable, fun and, most importantly, their own.

Pork green chile a comforting choice for an anxious Broncos fan

T

he last time the Denver Broncos went to the Super Bowl, I invited folks over for a party. We were all set with a table packed with cool foods

and beverages.

A minute into the football game when I was still working in the kitchen, it was essentially over. The game went downhill from there fast. The smorgasbord seemed less than appealing by half time and the post-loss depression was deep, wide and long.

I should have known better. I had watched the Broncos lose a lot of Super Bowls. In 1987, 1988 and 1989 I edited special Broncos Super Bowl food sections for the Daily Camera. One section featured an eye-catching

bowl of pasta X’s and O’s on a field of cheese soup. (Trust me, there are few foods that are a naturally bright Broncos orange and even fewer that are truly blue.)

All of those games were crushing defeats.

Finally, the Terrell Davis-led Super Bowl wins in the 1990s did a lot to ease the collective pain.

Once again we find the Broncos in the big game after a truly hair-raising season. By the way, this will be Super Bowl 50 — not Super Bowl L — because only a few people who took high school Latin like me know how to read Roman numerals any more.

nibbles I won’t give you the recipe and it’s not because it’s a “secret.” I hate following recipes, writing recipes and editing recipes. I’d rather just wing it. I’ll get ideas from a recipe, but I won’t let ingredients and directions be the boss of me. It means that each batch is a one-time-only thing.

Padding green chile with shoulder

I’ve typically gone with pork loin in making a chunky green chile because it’s easy to use, but pork shoulder roast was so cheap when I shopped, I bought one even though I had never roasted one. I put this gigantic piece of meat fat side up in a deep pot and coated the top with minced garlic, salt, black pepper, red pepper flakes, rosemary and a bunch of green herbs, including sage.

I forgot the roast in a 300-degree oven for about three hours, then drained and saved several unctuous inches of exceptional broth. I cranked the oven to 400 degrees and put it back in for 30 minutes or so to crisp and brown the meat. When done, the roast had shrunk in size by half and it literally forked apart into chunks and crispy shredded pork. If you take it out and it doesn’t fall apart, put it back in for another 30 minutes until it does.

When it cooled, I drained the fat off and hand-shredded the meat and saved the few bones. There was so much meat I filled a few freezer bags with pork and tucked them away for future meals.

The next day I took the broth out of the refrigerator and scraped off the layer of lard on top. I thought about saving the fat to brighten some mashed potatoes but thankfully, dietary common sense prevailed. I simmered the broth plus additional water and pork bones for an hour or more.

Meanwhile, I added peeled and chopped yellow onions and minced garlic cloves to olive oil in a deep saucepan.

I added a fresh Anaheim pepper I had roasted in the oven and peeled. The smoky perfume teleported me back to my first visit to New Mexico where I fell under the green chile spell at a food truck parked outside the Sanctuario de Chimayo. I also added ripe red mirasol “Pueblo” peppers I’d grown on my back deck last summer and frozen. I would also happily use frozen or canned green chilies.

delightful mixture on a crusty bun with a layer of marinara (with or without a sausage) and sliced whole milk mozzarella and bake until melted and I’d have a traditional Italian-American treat.

Instead, I stirred in a couple of tablespoons of flour and added strained pork broth and kept it simmering until it started to thicken. I put in the chunks and shreds of pork at the very end so they wouldn’t fall apart.

Finished green chile dish for Super Bowl Sunday

Green chile is a process, not a result You may need to add more broth or water. You will need to taste it multiple times as you go. When there’s no recipe you have to adjust the seasonings. For instance, this batch may contain trace amounts of Pabst Blue Ribbon, leftover coffee, malt vinegar, sugar soy sauce, red wine, Sriracha and cumin. I’m just not sure.

I like the flavor and mouthfeel of this batch. Deep background flavors form a canvas for broad brushstrokes of rich roasted porkiness with sharp chile accents.

When I reheat it I’ll probably add canned fire-roasted tomatoes. If it isn’t hot enough, I’ll garnish with warm puréed green chilies just before serving.

For a Broncos Super Bowl win, maybe I’ll combine melt-able Mexican cheese with my green chile and call it Victory Fondue.

Hope is a good thing and it springs eternal for the home team.

A large crowd braved a snowstorm to come out to Savage Love Live at Boston’s Wilbur Theatre last week.

Questions were submitted on index cards, which allowed questioners to remain anonymous and forced them to be succinct. I got to as many of them as I could over two long, raucous, boozy hours. Here are some of the questions I didn’t have time for in Boston…

Q: What do you think of poop play?

A: I think of it rarely.

Q: How long should I keep my partner locked in male chastity?

Q: What exactly causes relationships to end?

A: Relationships end for all sorts of different reasons — boredom, neglect, contempt, betrayal, abuse — but all relationships that don’t end survive for the same reason: The people in them just keep not breaking up. Sometimes people in relationships that need to end never get around to breaking up.

Q: I was in an open relationship once and was heartbroken in the end because my partner broke the rules we made. My current partner wants to make our monogamous relationship open, but I am hesitant because of my previous burn. How do I get over this and become comfortable with an open relationship again?

As you can see from the UD definition, it’s not about sex or kink, it’s about misogyny and implied violence, i.e., the man takes a shit and orders “his woman” to come in and give him head.

With dozens of different strains available to choose from, each emitting a different aroma and promising a different high, it is hard to remember that it is all just one thing — cannabis. With one ingredient served up in dozens of different ways, it can paralyze a consumer, but for a grower, it’s an innovative paradise.

“It almost feels like it’s never been done before,” says Stephen Lipton, general cultivation manager of Boulder dispensary The Farm. “I guess because it really hasn’t. Before it was a black market thing, and now that it isn’t there is a high level of experimentation and ingenuity going on that you just can’t deny anymore.”

Once the industry came above ground it entered a sort of renaissance, where growers could begin refining the genetics of their clones to create new, more precise strains and develop more sophisticated techniques to grow and cure the plant.

For the growers, developing this market space comes with a deep sense of responsibility, as they find themselves walking the line between geneticist, pharmacist and product developer.

When Amendment 64 passed, The Farm expected clearer definition between medical and recreational use and a little more guidance to boot, but there isn’t.

It is now up to individual growers to deliver reliable products, accurately described, for both prescriptive and recreational purposes.

For Lipton that responsibility translates to craft cannabis, which he defines as “the artful attunement of cultivators to be able to adjust to the needs of each plant to bring out its full potential.”

Packed into that dense definition is Lipton’s 20-plus years of experience in small, organic farming and horticulture. In those years he learned that growing is a humble process of giving plants exactly what they need and then getting out of the way to let them do their thing.

The other day, I was reading some old interviews with Professor Raphael Mechoulam of Hebrew University in Jerusalem, who is sometimes described as the father of marijuana research. The year before, he did the same with Cannabidiol (CBD), the ingredient in marijuana with the most medicinal uses currently.

Mechoulam also found that the THC and CBD molecules bind to the CB1 and CB2 receptors in the brain. He reasoned there had to be a naturally occurring marijuana-like compound in the brain (an endocannabinoid), which was why the brain had the receptors, and in 1992 he found it.

He named it Anandamide, which means supreme joy in Sanskrit. He also found cannabinoid receptors existed not just in the brain but in a number of other organs as well.

In other words, when it comes to the pharmacology of cannabis, Mechoulam is the senior guru.

Which is why some conclusions he shared with the Israeli start-up business website NoCamels in 2013 caught my eye. He told the interviewer that he had found that “most of the marijuana sold illegally in the U.S. actually contains no CBD, or very low

amounts of it.”

He also told the interviewer that he had long been stressing the importance of CBD, which modulates the effects of THC. Among other things, “CBD attenuates the memory-impairing effects produced by THC,” he said.

What was true about illegal marijuana in 2013 is equally true about legal recreational marijuana today.

Most of the strains sold in recreational dispensaries have little or no CBD content. Just guessing here, but I suspect those strains that do have a significant CBD content to go along with the THC seem to be marketed to consumers like me who want a medical marijuana strain sometimes, but don’t have a medical card.

In 2012, I read a newspaper interview with Mechoulam in which he said that since he began his initial work, dozens of additional cannabinoids have been found in marijuana (Wikipedia says there are

now 85 known ones) and that various combinations of them may have “an entourage effect” on people.

A cannabis entourage may also include turpines, compounds that give pot its distinctive smell and seem to account for the different highs of Sativa and Indica. (Indica has more turpines.)

After I read the part about CBD attenuating the memory-impairing effects, I got out a couple of strains I had around that had both THC and CBD in roughly equal proportions. I’d been smoking them before bedtime to keep some mild arthritis and psoriasis I have from flaring up. Now I tried them as the first smoke of the day. They gave me a nice high but with a lot less loss of alertness than you sometimes get from today’s kick-ass, allTHC strains. The high reminded me of some of the seedy pot we used to get in the ’70s before sinsemillas with the CBD bred out of them became all the rage.

What all this suggests is that, unlike alcohol, marijuana strains can be developed with combinations of active ingredients that have different physical and psychological effects.

Mechoulam is interested in the medical potential of different entourages. But it strikes me that there may be a business opportunity here on the recreational side as well. Wine connoisseurs comprise a multi-billion dollar market for a product that comes in tens of thousands of variations but with a single active ingredient. With pot, there could be tens of millions of possible variations based on combinations of dozens of canabinoids and turpines.

WHY THE MEDIA COVERAGE OF THE 2016 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION PROCESS SUCKS SO BAD If you haven’t noticed that the coverage of the race to be the next president is the worst in history, it is likely because it is the worst in history. But with a quick primer, you too can learn to translate what the corporate media is actually doing.

For beginners, the 2016 presidential race is about choosing between corporatesponsored politicians and outsiders, aka non-establishment candidates.

This has occurred because most Wikimedia Commons Wikimedia Commons Americans are fed up with a system that only serves the wealthy donors and corporations who fund the establishment politicos.

So the news coverage should be expected to reflect this, but it really doesn’t in a meaningful way and there is good reason, namely establishment media.

Since the creation of the original Media Monopoly maps created by NYU’s Mark Crispin Miller two decades ago, we have known who controls the news, or better said, we got the opportunity to know who owns the news. But because the news owners weren’t about to report on themselves and their own media monopolies, most Americans are still in the dark. Back in 1996 it was GE, Disney and Westinghouse who controlled two-thirds of all media in the U.S. Today there are even fewer players.

The point is this: the owners of the talking heads we see analyzing the debates and primaries on network and cable TV, as well as the internet, are simply really highly paid employees of major corporations that have used the current broken campaign finance system to control politicians and the laws they create. So in order to maintain the status quo, which serves these corporation’s profits so well, they use their news employees to manipulate coverage in order to impact voting outcomes.

How else can you explain why the Today Show decided to give air time to only Hillary Clinton, not her opponent Bernie Sanders who was tied in the polls, on the morning of the Iowa caucuses? What else can explain why “Super Journalist” Savannah Guthrie’s first question to Clinton was something to the effect of, “Why aren’t you making more out of the fact that if Bernie Sanders were to win the Democratic nomination it would pretty much guarantee we would have a Republican president?” Of Course Clinton agreed to CSUS.edu this corporate propaganda designed to scare Sanders supporters. And then there was mighty mouth Chris Matthews criticizing Sanders at every turn: He should have done this, he should have done that, and finally noting the Iowa results were a huge setback for Sanders.

Are you effing kidding me, Chris? It came down to Clinton, the establishment’s (read: the corporate media’s) chosen one, having to win six out of seven coin flips in tied precincts for Clinton not to lose. Personally, I’d like to see those coins, because in Vegas they would give you a-thousand-to-one odds you couldn’t win six coin flips in a row. I’m guessing Hillary’s head was on both sides. But it doesn’t matter.

Guthrie makes $2 million a year, and Matthews rakes in $5 million a year. And it’s the same all over television news. These are not people who are likely to bite the corporate hands that feed them. No one has to send them an email telling them to play up Clinton and play down Sanders. They know their multimillion-dollar contract is up in a couple of years and they aren’t dumb enough to do anything to jeopardize that.

This is what is wrong with corporate media and its coverage of this election.

Where else could Hillary Clinton declare Sanders a mad man who wants to create a healthcare system for everyone that can never, ever happen in America on one night, and then declare her undying commitment to universal healthcare the very next day, and not see endless loops of those two conflicting statements running over and over again?

The corporate media likes Citizens United as much as Wall Street. Please watch it accordingly.
