T

here’s a good reason we love getting to publish Longmont Insider every year. For those of us on staff who live in Longmont, it’s a chance to brag about our town. For those on staff who live elsewhere in Boulder County, it’s a chance to discover a lot of great things about an amazing community that is growing and evolving more rapidly than almost any other along the Front Range.

Longmont’s population is getting very close to surpassing the 100,000 mark, a reality that would have seemed nearly impossible just 25 years ago when Boulder Weekly was rolling its first issue off the press.

And while there are obviously more people living in the County’s largest ”L” town these days, there are many major changes to the community’s landscape as well.

Where a turkey processing plant once occupied the south end of downtown, that space, even as we write, is being transformed into apartments, restaurants, galleries and microbreweries. Where downtown’s Main Street business district used to come to an abrupt end at Sixth Street, it’s now stretching further north, block by block, every year.

The parts of the city devastated by the 2013 flood have not only been rebuilt, they are being revitalized into water parks and bike paths and new businesses. It seems a new restaurant or organic grocery store or entertainment business opens every few weeks. And who hasn’t noticed, and enjoyed, the fact that the art deco neon lights of the Longmont Performing Arts Center are burning bright once again.

It’s a perfect metaphor for Longmont, a city whose past and present have merged to make it the brightest light in Northern Colorado.

1. THE HEAT of summer can be a lot for us to bear, so imagine how it feels to your friend in the fur coat. Head to the Union Reservoir Dog Beach to cool down and let the dogs romp. You’ll both love the chance to get in the water and cool down. Please note: people are only allowed waist deep, and the fence which separates the park from the nearby dirt road is not dog-proof, so your pups should be reliably under voice control. It takes a village Veterans Community Project to build tiny new neighborhood for 25 vets

LONGMONT’S NEWEST neighborhood is going to be

a village within the city — a community of tiny homes for veterans who need a little stability in their lives. It will be a sanctuary for local veterans who need a home and who need support services.

The village is a crossover venture between the Kansas Citybased Veterans Community Project (VCP), the City of Longmont and local Longmont developers. The initiative began in 2018, when the Longmont City Council passed a resolution supporting the “Mayor’s Challenge to End Homelessness.”

In the wake of that resolution, the city assembled a taskforce known as the “veteran’s housing coalition.”

Councilwoman Bonnie Finley spearheaded the effort, appointing local developer Kevin Mulshine as head of the “land acquisition committee” and charged him with finding a place in Longmont to build veteran housing.

It was not as easy a task as it sounds.

“We met with some churches that were fantastic and some others [that were] willing to give some land,” Mulshine says. “But what happened each time was there was always an existing neighborhood.”

And when the City would propose building houses for homeless vets near those existing neighborhoods, they would be assailed with so many objections they’d be forced to concede and look elsewhere.

That’s when Councilwoman Finley put a little friendly pressure on Mulshine to include homeless veteran housing units in one of his new upcoming neighborhood developments.

FINDING LAND in Longmont proved initially difficult, but now VCP and community partners have a place to build their village.

“You can understand a developer’s apprehension of putting something for homeless vets on property where you want to sell new homes,” Mulshine says. “We finally got to the point where we said, ‘Look we’ll consider it but only if you can find a really amazing company to manage it that does a great job.’”

Thus began the search — a quest that would take Mulshine to California, Virginia, Florida and, eventually, Kansas City — looking for the right organization to house vets in Longmont.

And when Mulshine visited the tiny home village in Kansas City, he says he remembers how struck he was by the appeal of VCP’s housing system. “It’s vibrant and it’s a really special place where they create a really special environment,” he says. “It’s pretty incredible.”

VCP is a vet-focused, privately funded nonprofit on a mission to end veteran homelessness around the U.S. In Kansas City, it offers housing and “wraparound” homelessness services to any person who has given the oath to serve this country, and the organization has been looking to expand into a second city.

So, when Mulshine showed up at the tiny home village for vets in Kansas City, it was a good match.

“We’ve had 600 other cities reach out to us and say, ‘Hey, we want you to do what you’re doing in Kansas City in our community,’” Mark Solomon, a Navy veteran and the co-founder of VCP says. “The reason we’re coming to Longmont as our first official expansion city is that we’ve got amazing community support. Not only from individuals and the community, but the city government itself, from the mayor to the city council people to the city staff, they are all totally bustin’ their humps to make sure that this goes smoothly and gets done quickly.”

The soon-to-be-built village will have the capacity to house 25 homeless veterans, and from the way Solomon and Mulshine describe it, it’s going to be a beautiful haven for those who end up living there.

Aesthetically, there may be some differences between Kansas City’s tiny home village and the one being built in Longmont, but functionally, they will be identical. This is where the power in VCP’s Kansas City model lies: the wraparound services provided to clients.

“In Kansas City we’ve helped over 8,000 veterans so far with various services including housing but not just limited to our houses,” Solomon says. VCP connects vets to existing homelessness services in the area, offering everything from psychological and medical services to career services to financial assistance, transportation, education and training.

VCP starts by assessing clients by their level of vulnerability, taking into consideration individual needs and then providing help to get vets back on their feet. It’s a comprehensive approach to getting these veterans into homes and keeping them off the streets, changing their lifestyles so they can live safer, healthier, happier lives.

“In the Kansas City village, we have a small food pantry and a small clothing center and so we can get our clients immediate stuff if they need after they’re triaged,” Solomon says. “Maybe they just need a place to stay for the weekend, before we get them into houses, and we can get them a hotel room if we need to. Or maybe their dog is sick and needs veterinary services, we’ll get their dog taken care of.”

Each veteran is assigned a case manager after they’re assessed, who works with the vets to establish goals and start making progress toward accomplishing them. Currently, VCP has about one case manager for every eight clients, and the group ultimately wants to shave that ratio down to 4-to-1, Solomon says.

“To give you kind of an industry standard, most organizations will have about a 30- or 40-to-1 case manager workload,” he says. VCP clients get a lot of attention from their case managers, compared to standard homeless programs.

Through these wraparound services, VCP teaches clients necessary skills, like how to budget, cook, clean and grocery shop. Basic skills that people might not have needed after years of homelessness, Solomon says. “We have children in our Kansas City village, too,” he adds. Even pets are allowed in the VCP tiny homes.

“There are rules, though,” Solomon says. Rules like no drugs and alcohol, no partying, no weapons and no violence. “This is the kind of environment that we are trying to foster, it’s a safe environment for people to get better and get back on their feet.”

“I can just think you’re a vet and that’s good enough for me.”

It’s an effective model, dedicated to making a difference in the lives of homeless veterans and addressing the root causes of their homelessness. And since the founders are all veterans themselves, there’s an authentic connection to the clients that many civilian-operated organizations can’t achieve. Solomon says this is another huge factor in their success.

The Longmont project is expected to break ground in August or September 2019, according to Mulshine. He says the city has expedited the process of building this tiny home village.

Veterans will also be able to access VCP services by the fall and shortly thereafter, Solomon says VCP plans on getting the first 25 vets moved into the Longmont VCP village.

“It’s transitional housing so they can stay up to two years,” Solomon explains. By the end of that two years, the hope is that VCP will have helped clients get their feet back underneath them, to find stability and maintain it. “Our whole goal is to help in whatever way that they need to be made whole again.”

Conveniently, Mulshine explains that they are also building out several lots adjacent to the VCP tiny homes village in Longmont for Habitat for Humanity. “One of the concepts is that might be a great place for some of these veterans to be able to transition into,” he says.

So far, both Mulshine and Solomon say that there has been immense community support for this project. Right now, though, Solomon says the biggest two things they need are volunteers and fundraising. Individuals who want to help in either of those regards need only access the VCP website, where both options are prominent.

For homeless vets in Longmont and Boulder County, VCP’s tiny home village is going to be a stroke of fortune. Not only is it going to be a nice place to live — a warm and tightknit community of vets supporting each other and being supported by VCP’s wraparound services — but it’s also going to serve as a platform from which homeless vets can regain an element of long-term stability in their lives.

All it’s going to take is a tiny village.

This body of water stretches for 736 acres, providing ample opportunity for many outdoor recreational activities like paddleboarding, sailing, camping, fishing and picnicking. n 2017, Longmont City Council voted to lift the city-wide ban on marijuana sales. The following year, applications from dispensaries began rolling in; more than a dozen dispensaries wanted first dibs on the cannabis market in Longmont and to contribute to the growing demand for high-quality products. City Council eventually issued four permits, and now all four dispensaries — Elevated, Medicine Man, Twin Peaks and Terrapin — have opened, gracing the community with easy-to-access cannabis shops and education services. There were a limited amount of licenses that were released, and we’re really excited to have been one of the dispensaries that are able to open up in town. A lot of us come from Northern Colorado, so it’s nice to feel at home here.

Why are you excited about being in Longmont?

Just every part of working with Longmont has been a plus for us.

Longmont is a big city, but it’s got a small-town feel. Everyone we’ve talked to has been comforting and friendly, very receptive to our arrival. We are launching a new strain that’s called the Longmonster, and we’re only selling it at our Longmont location. The most exciting part is that 25 percent of the proceeds are going to be donated to local charities around Longmont.

Looking toward the future of cannabis, what are you most excited about?

Of the trends we’ve been seeing lately, lower-doses or microdosing is growing more popular. That’s typically less THC, where people are using it for wellness and health and pain relief. So rather than getting messed up, people are using this product to enhance their life.

Industry-wide, it’s awesome that more stores are opening up. I think consumption lounges are the next frontier for us, and we’re far from it right now.

What’s one thing you wish every Longmont resident knew about cannabis?

I wish people could know that there is a totally safe and responsible way to use cannabis. We pride ourselves on industry compliance because we wish cannabis to be a responsible and safe experience.

What’s one product folks should try from your dispensary?

Any of the Stillwater Ripple products; it’s a dissolvable THC and CBD powder.

What’s one thing you wish every Longmont resident knew about cannabis?

It’s becoming more normal. They don’t need to feel weird about coming to our dispensary and asking questions. We’re used to that. It’s a safe space. New products are coming out. You don’t have to get high to get relief or use the products effectively.

What’s one product folks should try from your dispensary?

Lotions are a good introduction to cannabis. We’ve been seeing a lot of people coming in, interested in cannabis, and lotions are easy to understand. You can get relief, and it’s easy to use.

Why are you excited about being in Longmont?

Because we think that Longmont is cool, and there is a need for dispensaries. There’s more of a need than we can really provide for.

And we like the city because it’s like a hidden gem with cheaper prices. Our building doesn’t look like traditional dispensaries. It’s 4,500 square feet, huge, funky and friendly. We have an educational room, a huge recreational room.

Looking toward the future of cannabis, what are you most excited about?

There is something so exciting about being in the industry right now.

With that comes research. We’re very

excited about the way cannabis helps with mental health, helps with addiction. We’re hoping to participate and guide the industry to where we want it to go.

What’s one thing you wish every Longmont resident knew about cannabis?

We think that cannabis is a very interesting alternative to traditional medicine, and people should not be scared of it, and they should look into and see why so many other people have already figured out how it serves them.

What’s one product folks should try from your dispensary?

We have over 800 concentrates and edibles to choose from, and that’s not even counting flower... so it’s very hard for me to come up with a suggestion. Cherry cartridges. We think they’re really good quality, and have cool packaging.

Why are you excited about being in Longmont?

Mainly, we’re excited to not only be a part of the community here in Longmont, but to be a part of the nonprofits in the area, and the Chambers as well. The most rewarding part is giving back to our community.

Looking toward the future of cannabis, what are you most excited about?

We are looking to set a good precedent for others in the industry.

We don’t want to take over and bury

everybody else, we want people to follow in the same footsteps that we’re taking, being a good role model for the industry.

What’s one thing you wish every Longmont resident knew about cannabis?

Terrapin has you covered! Cannabis is not harmful and it’s not dangerous, it just takes a little education and a desire to learn. That’s one of the main things we like to do: fight the stigmas of the industry and educate.

What’s one product folks should try from your dispensary?

Our terrapins: The packaging they come in is completely compostable and made of 30 percent recycled material. It’s 5 grams in each pack, which is 10-12 joints.
