Highroad Searching for integrity in Trumplandia

ring those jobs back home, Donald Trump bellowed to those greedheaded corporate executives who’ve hauled our middle-class jobs out of country, or I’ll slap you with a big tariff when you try to sell your foreign-made products here.

Great stuff, Donnie — and to prove you mean business, I know just the CEO you should target first: Her name is Ivanka. Yes, your daughter! Her multimillion-dollar line of clothing and acces-

sories, sold through major national retailers, ranging from Macy’s to Amazon, are pitched to America’s working women. Yet, practically all of her products are made on the cheap in lowwage factories in China, Indonesia, Vietnam — anywhere except America.

Imagine the message it would send to runaway corporations and the integrity it would establish for The Donald if he slapped his first tariffs on Ivanka’s goods!

But, neither Daddy Trump nor the daughter want to discuss the embarrassing conflict between his political bluster and her ethic of runaway capitalism.

Instead, she’s tried to dodge the issue by saying it doesn’t matter, since she’ll “separate” herself from the business if she becomes a White House advisor.

Nice try, Ivanka, but the stench of hypocrisy will only grow nastier if you’re at your father’s side while he castigates

and punishes other corporations that’ve absconded from America. The only way to salvage even an iota of moral virtue is to repatriate the manufacturing of your brand-name apparel. And bringing those middle-class jobs home to the Good Ol’ US of A would also make a powerful political statement.

But, no — showing that money trumps both political savvy and the morality of simply doing what’s right, Ivanka says her corporate brand will stay offshore. As a spokeswoman put it: “We want to make responsible business decisions.”

Really? How does that “Make America Great Again?”

the anderson files Trump’s Bizarro World

I

n the 1960s, DC introduced “Bizarro World” in their Superman comic books. It is the fictional planet of “htraE” (“Earth” spelled backwards) where everything is inverted and backwards.

Up is down, wrong is right, logical is illogical, giving is taking, insanity is sane, liberty is tyranny. A salesman gets rich selling Bizarro bonds: “Guaranteed to lose money for you.”

A number of commentators have compared the Trump administration to Bizarro World, with cabinet picks who are hostile to the mission of their departments led by a plutocratic grifter posing as a working class hero.

In The New Republic, Jeet Heer argues that Trump is the Bizarro Noam Chomsky. Republicans have a habit of saying that Democrats don’t believe America is the morally superior nation which must lead the world.

However, Trump is a Republican who challenges this notion of American goodness. In an interview on Fox News, Bill O’Reilly asked Trump if he respected Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump said he did.

“He’s a killer, though,” O’Reilly said. “Putin’s a killer.”

“There are a lot of killers,” Trump replied. “We’ve got a lot of killers.

What, you think our country’s so innocent?”

Heer argues that Trump’s point of view is similar to that of the radical left as expressed by linguist and political commentator Noam Chomsky.

Heer writes, “Trump often describes the goals of America as not the promotion of democracy and international order, but brutal capitalist pillaging. As he told members of the CIA when he visited their headquarters in January, ‘The old expression: “to the victor belong the spoils” — you remember. I always used to say, keep the oil.’”

The idea is that Chomsky and Trump both believe that our nation tends to do many of the right things for all the wrong reasons. Heer adds, “Both are skeptical of claims made by mainstream liberals and conservatives that America has any special moral status. The crucial difference is that Chomsky wants the U.S. to stop behaving in this manner, while Trump promises to be more effective in his Boulder Weekly

brutality and looting. Trump, then, is a kind of Bizzaro Chomsky — one bereft of a conscience, of any sense of right and wrong.”

During the presidential campaign, Trump accused his opponents of being hypocrites. The other candidates would point out his inconsistencies but the charge of hypocrisy wouldn’t stick in his case, argues Russian American journalist Masha Gessen in a recent New York Times op-ed. She says Trump was destroying the rules of political conduct: “He was openly claiming that he abused the system to benefit himself. If he didn’t pay his taxes and got away with it, this made him a good businessman. If he could force himself on women, that made him more of a man.”

Gessen asserts that this pose is not new: “Fascists the world over have gained popularity by calling forth the idea that the world is rotten to the core. In The Origins of Totalitarianism, author Hannah Arendt described how fascism invites people to ‘throw off the mask of hypocrisy’’ and adopt the worldview that there is no right and wrong, only winners and losers... In the last decade and a half, post-Communist autocrats like Vladimir V. Putin and Viktor Orban (current Prime Minister of Hungary) have adopted this cynical posture.”

Trump’s peculiarities have created confusion and division everywhere.

Even on the American left. He expressed a desire for better relations with Russia at the time when other Republican presidential candidates and Hillary Clinton seemed stridently hawkish. Unfortunately, he legitimized and condoned Putin’s territorial encroachments and foreign interventions at the same time.

It is a little unlikely that his consistently pro-Putin sentiments are based upon a principled pacifist stance.

Bill Browder, who once operated the largest foreign-investment fund in Russia, has said: “Trump is a dealmaker, and I can’t imagine that he would be doing this [promoting policies favorable to Russia] unless there was something in it for him. He doesn’t think of it as high treason.

Kudos to Rico Moore for his investigation of the real reasons Colorado Parks and Wildlife is hell-bent on killing mountain lions and bears [Re: News “Off target,” Feb. 9]. CPW’s credibility with the public continues to crater as they frame “wildlife management” with bad science and pandering to special interests.

Thanks for this revealing article, which exposed new facets of how the oil and gas industry continues to operate in an unethical fashion, for no other reason than to maximize profit [Re: News, “Off target,” Feb. 9].

Now the Colorado attorney general threatens a lawsuit against Boulder County, even after completely disregarding the citizen’s wishes to stop drilling within the city limits of Lafayette and other places. Read this closely... there are many activities restricted and not allowed within city limits, for the singular reason of public safety. Given that we have already allowed drilling on state and federal lands and we have vast federal reserves, there is no need to threaten public safety by allowing a dangerous situation in our municipalities. If nothing else, I will do my own research as to whether drilling is going on in my neighborhood and if there is any effect on my land such as newly formed cracks on my property (as I am seeing), then I have no other recourse but to sue the state, the city and the oil or gas company responsible for ruining my property and/or tainting any city water source.

We could effectively keep our cities safe from the effects of drilling, if those that call themselves “conservatives” actually get on board with being a conservative. As of now, they are blind energy liberals.

In this case, that’s Despicable Debacle of Deconstruction. I’ll offer no points to the new president for transparency, but what you see (or saw) is what you get (got). The overarching question, then, is what will remain in January 2021. I assume this Congress will do nothing to remove this chief executive, no matter what he does (or will not do), or says. Those fools on the Hill are having too much fun getting even with all those pinko liberal rules, people and regulations. Capitol Hill is very much like a world-class meth lab.

Anything goes, because the pit bull outside has got their backs. And a friendly Supreme Court nomination.

Funny how the Constitution seems to mean something, once it’s in the hands of a “friendly” mechanic.

Not craftsman. This president has no regard for our country’s goals, welfare or institutions. Courtesy?

Inconvenient. Fairness? Useless.

Alliances? Burdensome, if not perfidious. In short, the only thing that seems to count for anything is his ratings — with himself and an electoral minority. foreign nations who haven’t yet caught Caesar’s “bowing disease” (W. Shakespeare).

How to tiptoe around an immature schoolyard bully who’s armed to the teeth? Are we to find ourselves soon fearing the nighttime knock on the door? What about federalism? If instead of nationalizing a state’s national guard he sends regular troops into Chicago, for example, would he even be advised regarding the 19th-century “posse comitatus” law? Could he spell it? Would he listen? Care?

We need to care. This administration, if left alone, is likely to drive our economy, our republican (small R!) traditions, and our reputation into the sewer. Small comfort it would be if once we arrived we would find it necessary to take comfort from our jailers. You’ll know them by their red baseball caps.

And they won’t be any better off than the rest of us.

Thirty days is enough to judge this president

Thirty days into the new administration, we can now characterize the president we’ll have for the next four years: Shallow, manipulable, untrustworthy, secretive, unethical, vain, careless, bullying, divisive. And these all are brought together under the umbrella quality: inept.

Trump’s message about the need to strengthen the middle class economic core of our country was right on, which is why he was elected, and if he were able to get over himself there is the possibility that this could be achieved. However, he spends more energy in self-promotion, in distorting reality, in vilifying criticism, and in fomenting adversarial relationships than he does in developing a healthy, productive, focused leadership. He demonstrates neither knowledge of nor interest in the truth on anything that affects his brand. He abrogates policy responsibility to narrow-minded, single-issue supporters with neither responsibility to the general public nor interest in how their ideas fit in the big picture of our free society.

He makes poorly considered decisions based on the potential for headlines and adulation. He regularly demonstrates his disdain for civility. He wants to change America from an established three-branched government with time-proven checks and balances to an imperial autocratic form that has been shown time and time again to be anathema to freedom of expression and personal liberty.

The bottom line is that America will not be great with Trump at the top.

To borrow a phrase from a generation to which he may be able to relate, Trump doesn’t have the right stuff. It’s important that those of us who feel that America embodies the principles laid out in the Declaration of Independence and in the Constitution encourage our fellow citizens and our elected public servants to uphold that foundation, in clear rejection of everything Trump, relegating him to the sideshow that he is.

Speak up to protect our democracy

Since apathy can lead to the end of our democracy, the logical thing to do is take action [Re: Letters, “Apathy will cost us our democracy,” Feb. 9]. When we write, call or speak to our legislators we can influence our government. That is why the House recently passed the READ Act, on a voice vote, which basically means no opposition from either party. When this bill becomes law, it will help more children in our world receive an education.

When children are educated, earnings rise, birth rates drop and conflict decreases. So be the opposite of apathetic and ask your elected officials to pass legislation that makes a difference for millions in America and our world!

A voice for peace

Humanity wants peace, but peace seems a far-off goal. According to the International Peace Bureau, “The world’s governments are spending more than $1.7 trillion a year on their militaries, more than at the peak of Cold War.” $100 billion of this is going toward the production and modernization of nuclear weapons, weapons which would destroy the planet, humanity and all living beings if used in an all-out war.

The United States spends as much on our military as the next 10 countries combined. The figures for what we spend annually range from $773.5 billion to over a trillion dollars, depending on what is counted. China spends about a quarter of what we spend, Russia onetenth.

How do we get to peace when we spend more than 54 percent of our tax dollars on war and the preparations for war? How do we protect our environment, address climate change, fix our roads and bridges, fund our schools and health care, and take care of the elderly when the majority of our tax dollars are spent on the military?

We appear to need some help.

Maybe a voice from another continent would give us some ideas on how to address our present dilemma.

Reiner Braun has been a German peace activist since 1982 and is the copresident of the International Peace Bureau based in Berlin, Germany. He’s has also been the executive director of several peace organizations in his career.

Christian faith leaders press Colorado delegation

As Christians and as leaders of churches in Colorado, we grieve the action of President Trump to temporarily halt refugee resettlement programs for 120 days, to restrict the legal travel of green card holders, and to ban Syrian refugees indefinitely.

We cannot support an immigration policy based on the exclusion of persons from Muslim majority nations.

While we acknowledge the need for national security, we do not support fear and anxiety as a foundation for

immigration policy.

We are compelled by Christ to offer hospitality to the stranger, food to the hungry, shelter to the refugee, and compassion to all displaced individuals.

For years, many of our congregations have worked with compassion and energy to resettle asylum seekers, refugees and immigrants in Colorado. We want to continue increasing these ministries. The current ban will have the opposite effect, drastically impacting the important work of our local resettlement agencies.

Therefore, with one voice, we request that President Trump rescind the Executive Order signed on Friday, January 27, 2017 titled “Protecting the Nation From Foreign Terrorist Entry Into the United States.” We ask that each member of Colorado’s Congressional delegation publicly call on President Trump to rescind this Executive Order as quickly as possible.

Let us work together to create communities of respect and relief for the world’s 65 million displaced persons — including over 21 million refugees — who have experienced the war, hatred and loss of family, community and vocation. Let us welcome them in the spirit of our Lord Jesus who came so that all may have life — and have it abundantly.

Trump has had numerous business relationships with Russian buyers and investors over the years. Money from Russia was important to Trump’ because bankers on Wall Street were unwilling to lend to him after his many bankruptcies. “We see a lot of money pouring in from Russia,” his son Donald Jr. told the global trade publication eTurboNews in 2008. He said that Russians were key investors in the Trump Organization’s assets. “And in terms of high-end product influx into the U.S., Russians make up a pretty disproportionate cross-section of a lot of our assets; say in Dubai, and certainly with our project in SoHo and anywhere in New York,” Trump Jr. added.

cies are charging that Russia intervened in the 2016 elections in order to elect Trump. Such interference is happening in Europe as well. A European Union task force reports that Putin is targeting French, German and Dutch elections with disinformation. Putin has an alliance with far-right Trumplike political parties throughout Europe.

We need an independent, non-partisan investigation as soon as possible.

This is poisoning the political climate.

If the charges are true, Russia might have embarrassing information that could be used to blackmail Trump. If the charges are false, Trump is the victim of a huge injustice. Bizarro.

In the face of increasingly aggressive federal immigration policies, the Colorado sanctuary movement grows

W

hen Jeanette Vizguerra entered sanctuary in the First Unitarian Society church in Denver on Wednesday, Feb. 15, she brought national attention to a growing movement of activists and faith communities around the country working to protect undocumented immigrants facing rising deportation rates and anti-immigrant rhetoric over the last several years. But while the new Trump administration continues to roll out aggressive policies, broadening removal priorities and vowing to deport millions of people from the country, Jeanette has been fighting for immigrant rights for almost a decade.

And considering sanctuary since 2013.

“This problem has always been there,” Jeanette says. “The difference is that Obama put some make-up on it with a smile and Trump is doing it in a very cynical, blunt way. He’s being very clear about what he’s going to do and he’s doing it.”

As Jeanette told Boulder Weekly in August 2015, she immigrated to Colorado from Mexico City in 1997, after her husband, a bus driver, was threatened at gunpoint multiple times.

The mother of four and grandmother of three has been working tirelessly to stay in Denver with her family ever since her first run-in with immigration in 2009 when she was convicted of a misdemeanor for being in possession of false identity documents.

Although she was given a final deportation order in 2013, she has survived with six-month to year-long stays of removal, or temporary postponement granted

by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). All through the process, she’s been a catalyst in Colorado’s burgeoning sanctuary movement, asking faith communities to commit to providing safe places where people can stay while fighting their immigration cases.

In December 2016, Jeanette applied early for another stay of removal while she awaits the processing of her U Visa application. A U Visa is a pathway to citizenship available to people who have been victims of violent crime (like Jeanette more than a decade ago) and who are assisting law enforcement in the prosecution of that crime. She applied for an extended stay of removal early in hopes that it would be processed before Trump’s Jan. 20 inauguration, and before her current one ran out on Feb. 7.

But as that date came and went, and with no response from ICE before her scheduled check-in 10 February 23, 2017

After the First Unitarian Society overwhelmingly agreed to be the first host congregation, the coalition began converting a basement storage room into a living area, installing a closet and painting the walls yellow and white, Jeanette’s favorite colors.

“White because it means purity and yellow means hope, and then the room was finished,” she says.

On the night of Donald Trump’s election, Jeanette stayed up until around midnight, watching in disbelief as the Republican candidate won state after state.

“I decided to go to sleep and get some rest because I knew the next day I’d have a lot of work,” she says.

The following morning she started organizing with other activists and groups at the local, state and national level, making plans for “know your rights” classes and protests around the inauguration in January.

“As a response to him taking the presidency, we were going to take to the streets — particularly against the climate he created of hate, racism and discrimination,” she says. Jeanette marched in Denver both on inauguration day and as part of the Women’s March on Jan. 21.

She began to think about entering sanctuary once again, even as she helped others explore the option at the same time. One of those she talked with was Ingrid Encalada Latorre.

Ingrid first learned about sanctuary from her niece who had seen news reports of Arturo’s nine-month stay at First Unitarian. Originally from Peru and facing separation from her two U.S. born children, she contacted Jeanette who put her in touch with the sanctuary coalition. She began going to a support group sponsored by AFSC for families facing or experiencing the threat of deportation. After pleading guilty to a felony for identity theft in 2010 on bad-advice from a lawyer who told her this wouldn’t affect her immigration status, Ingrid spent four and a half years on probation and paid $11,500 of back taxes. She’s currently attempting to reopen her criminal case at the same time ICE has formal deportation orders for her forced removal. It’s a complicated legal situation that left Ingrid little choice but to enter sanctuary.

On Nov. 28, 2016 she moved into the room at Mountain View Friends Society with her 1-year-old son Anibal. She hopes her stay of removal is approved through ICE so she can attend the spring court date for her criminal case, without fear of deportation.

“It was really a months-long process, the decision to enter sanctuary, because I knew once I entered sanctuary I’d be here for an indefinite amount of time,” she says. “It could be weeks or months or years before I’m able to leave the building.”

Every day goes by more or less the same. She wakes up and makes breakfast for Anibal, people come to visit and Ingrid practices her English with them. She and Anibal eat lunch and play, before the toddler goes down for an afternoon nap. She tries to exercise everyday, using YouTube videos or a stationary bike at the church. As evening rolls around, the two have dinner and watch a little TV before going to bed. Most evenings, her partner, Anibal’s father, comes by to say good night. “I have no idea how long I’ll stay,” she says. “I’m thinking I could be here for the full four years that Trump’s going to be president.”

For now, she tries to stay busy, filling her days in the church basement planning events and coordinating forums to help educate the undocumented community about their rights, as well as bring the larger community into the conversation through more visible marches and awareness campaigns.

“For 20 years, I’ve worked almost everyday, so I’m trying to look at this as a sort-of vacation,” Jeanette says. “But it’s more of a forced vacation.”

Even so, she says she treasures the time with her four children and grandkids when they are able to come visit.

“The difference is that if I am sent back to Mexico they won’t be able to hug me and make me feel better,” Jeanette says, tearing up for the first time in our conversation. “I want to empower other families to do the same, to tell them if I can do it, you can do it too.”

COLORADO PARKS AND WILDLIFE COMMISSION ASKED TO DELAY KILLING OF MOUNTAIN LIONS AND BEARS IN THE NAME OF SOUND SCIENCE BY RICO MOORE

olorado Parks and Wildlife’s (CPW) two predator management plans have been embroiled in controversy and uncertainty as to their scientific legitimacy since being unanimously approved by CPW Commissioners late last year (see Boulder Weekly’s “Off target,” Feb. 9). As a result, Colorado Rep. Steve Lebsock (D-Northglenn) arranged for CPW researchers, Colorado State University (CSU) professors and members of the Colorado General Assembly to participate in a panel discussion at the state capitol on Feb. 16 as part of the Colorado Legislative Animal Welfare (CLAW) Caucus. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Executive Director Bob Randall, who oversees CPW, was Wikimedia Commons/ Tony Hisgett present in the packed room.

Citing CPW information, Kevin Crooks, professor in the CSU department of fish, wildlife and conservation biology, noted mule deer populations in both management areas have been increasing. Despite this fact, Chuck Anderson, CPW mammals research section leader, hopes to accelerate population growth rates by killing mountain lions and black bears.

Crooks, Joel Berger and Barry Noon, also professors in the same department at CSU, asserted the vast majority of scientific evidence conducted both in Colorado and elsewhere throughout the mule deer’s natural range suggests that killing mountain lions and bears is an ineffective and expensive means to alter long-term population dynamics of mule deer.

These CSU professors also said CPW’s management plans fail to meet the standard of best available science. They further questioned the plans because CPW has no accurate population data for the mountain lions and bears they hope to kill. According to Crooks, not having scientifically defensible estimates of population size is a limitation of the study.

Anderson agreed that having such data would be preferable.

But CPW maintains its position that the proposed killing of predators will have no impacts on those populations.

However, Noon argued against this statement, saying it isn’t supported by data. He added what we do know is largebody carnivores, like mountain lions and bears, are most at risk in every ecosystem.

Furthermore, both CPW’s Mat Alldredge, carnivore wildlife researcher, and Anderson have stated they believe there are actually fewer mountain lions in both of the plan areas than their stated estimates.

Crooks suggested a look at the weight of evidence from CPW’s own research regarding the impact of energy development on mule deer in Colorado shows the oil and gas industry to have had a greater impact in previous population declines than mountain lions and bears. “It’s overwhelming that energy development is impacting mule deer populations,” he says.

As a part of this research, Crooks noted a recent study done in collaboration with CPW showing oil and gas extraction may actually increase predation rates on fawns because there are fewer places for them to hide in developed areas.

Crooks said that he, along with Berger and Noon, are struggling to understand why CPW’s research showing oil and gas extraction’s negative impact on mule deer, and specifically predation, “aren’t being incorporated in a more fully transparent way in the arguments being made here.” CPW officials did not directly respond to Crook’s question and there is a likely reason for their silence.

CPW researchers are overseen by the DNR, which is also responsible for assistance and oversight of oil and gas extraction in Colorado. As a rule, DNR’s role is to mitigate — not limit — extraction activities with regards to wildlife. This is not the only conflict of interest for CPW. The majority of CPW’s funding comes from the sale of hunting licenses and federal dollars that are tied to those license sales. This creates a conflict between peer-reviewed scientific research and constituentbased predator-killing plans.

Panelists also discussed the impacts of climate change on mule deer. Noon said there is tremendous evidence that climate change effects in Colorado, such as soil moisture content, “will ultimately affect the vegetation productivity and the quality of the forage.”

Since the primary factor limiting mule deer populations is habitat quality and quantity, climate change, driven in large part by oil and gas extraction, is accelerating impacts on Colorado’s interrelated wildlife populations, including mule deer, mountain lions and bears.

Noon claims our wildlife and fisheries are greatly stressed, and those stresses will increase as we transform the landscape and climate change takes effect. Therefore, he argues, killing mountain lions and bears to supposedly boost mule deer populations is not the best use of $4.6 million.

Suggestions were made to ameliorate the highlighted problems. One suggestion was to require that a majority of CPW Commissioners be wildlife biologists. Currently, not one commissioner has such expertise. There are, however, individuals on the CPW Commission with ties to the oil and gas and ranching industries. Other suggestions included requiring external peer review for CPW-proposed studies and shifting CPW’s funding away from hunting license sales towards the general fund.

At one point, Randall was asked if Colorado wanted mule deer or oil and gas extraction? His response: “I apologize, but that’s not a question I can answer.”

Following the caucus, Lebsock asked Randall to request the CPW Commission delay implementation of the predator management plans for one year until it can be determined whether or not they’re based in sound science. Randall did not indicate whether or not he would comply.

Utah loses Outdoor Retailer show over Bears Ears

Fate of monument remains uncertain despite industry protests

utdoor Retailer, the outdoor recreation industry’s largest trade show, has announced plans to cut ties with Utah in protest of the state’s opposition to the recently-created Bears Ears National Monument.

After 20 years of gathering in Salt Lake City, the trade show, which brings in approximately $45 million per year to the state, is now entertaining bids from prospective replacement hosts, including Colorado, Montana and Oregon. The move will come after its current contract expires next year.

The decision follows a meeting between the trade show, industry groups and Utah Gov. Gary Herbert, in which the parties failed to resolve differences regarding Utah’s public land policy.

“Salt Lake City has been hospitable to Outdoor Retailer and our industry for the past 20 years, but we are in lockstep with the outdoor community and are working on finding our new home,” said Marisa Nicholson, Outdoor Retailer’s director, in a press release.

The move marks the latest in a series of escalating protests against the state of Utah’s position. On Feb. 7, Patagonia announced it would boycott the 2017 show — a response to the Utah legislature’s resolution asking President Trump to rescind the monument designation for Bears Ears. Several other highprofile retailers including Arc’teryx and Polartec have since joined Patagonia in a boycott. “[Gov. Gary Herbert] and other Utah elected officials do not support public lands conservation nor do they value the economic benefits — $12 billion in consumer spending and 122,000 jobs — that the outdoor recreation industry brings to their state,” Patagonia CEO Rose Marcario said in a statement.

The American Alpine Club (AAC), based in Golden, collected more than 1,000 letters in support of protecting lands incorporated in the Bears Ears Monument, petitioning the Obama administration to protect the area.

“I’m just happy that the outdoor industry has been able to prove itself a significant enough economic engine that this [conversation] is becoming a real one and an important one,” says AAC CEO Phil Powers. “As opposed to years ago where people would have discounted this threat as unimportant.”

permits will still be available.

Increased funding from the federal government will help the park’s managers establish additional infrastructure, enforcement and education. Proponents also see the designation as an economic opportunity for surrounding communities.

“There will certainly be more tourist traffic because of the monument designation,” says CU law professor Sarah Krakoff. “If that kind of traffic is well managed and well regulated by the land managers then it’s often a longer-term economic boom for the surrounding areas than other kinds of development.”

But the designation is not universally popular.

According to a poll conducted by the Salt Lake City Tribune and the Hinckley Institute of Politics, about half of Utahns opposed the monument designation and would like to see it overturned.

Utah’s congressional delegation and Gov. Herbert signed a resolution earlier this month urging Trump to rescind the monument.

Opponents of the designation cite presidential overreach, the size of the monument (roughly 2.5 percent of the entire state) and potential negative economic implications of limiting the land’s use.

“By unilaterally locking up 1.35 million acres — an area roughly the size of the entire State of Delaware — the president has misused his authority under the Antiquities Act and violated assurances made by his Interior Secretary to take into account local concerns before making a monument designation,” Herbert said in a statement after Obama announced the monument. “Today’s designation demonstrates how overreach from the federal government often disregards the well-being and interests of rural Americans.”

The abundance of natural resources in the area varies. A 2016 drilling operation by Houston’s EOG Resources suggests some potential for oil and gas extraction, despite a general lack of drilling in the past. Mining has proven more successful — so much so that the Inter-Tribal Coalition’s original proposal for a 1.9 million-acre monument was trimmed down by 550,000 acres to

accommodate future mining operations expected to occur in the area.

In any case, the area is so large that one couldn’t realistically expect Utah’s governing bodies to accept it flat out.

With two-thirds of Utah’s land already under federal control, and the state being the fourth most conservative in the U.S., it would seem that Utah’s Republican representatives had little choice but to oppose the designation, even if that means losing Outdoor Retailer.

“That’s why we have the Antiquities Act,” AAC’s Powers says. “When our other institutions fail to get to the place they need to get to, we do have this tool to rise above partisanship and allow something important to happen when our other mechanisms don’t get the job done.”

OUTDOOR RETAILER HAS PULLED OUT OF UTAH, THE FUTURE OF BEARS EARS IS AS UNCLEAR AS EVER.

Looking forward Now that Outdoor Retailer has pulled out of Utah, the future of Bears Ears is as unclear as ever.

In theory, the monument could be rescinded or scaled back by either the president or Congress, but either option comes with its fair share of legal obstacles.

“If Congress reverses the monument, then that’s Congress’s prerogative. But I think that’s less likely to happen — it’s hard to get a publiclands bill through Congress that provides less protection,” Krakoff says.

“Even this Congress would be reluctant to do that because, in general, the public likes protecting its public lands.”

President Trump has yet to take a public stance on Bears Ears. And there’s no historical precedent for a repeal of a national monument — no president has tried. That the Antiquities Act doesn’t explicitly mention it seems to suggest that he can’t, but modifications to the monument, like scaling back its boundaries, are less clear. Either way, any actions threatening the monument will surely be challenged in court.

“The tribes and conservation groups have put in a huge amount of work to have this accomplished. It’s been a tremendously hard thing to do. But President Obama did do it,” Wilkinson says. “If they try to scale it back, there’s no way we’re going to lie down and accept it.”

ira Palmquist has written multiple plays throughout her career. Her latest play Two Degrees arose from an unlikely source: a conversation she had with an actress friend.

“She said, ‘You know what sucks?

Being an actress over 40 and having the parts dry up,’” Palmquist recounts.

“And she pointed to me across the table and she said, ‘That’s what you need to do for your next play, you need to write a play for a woman over 40!’”

Also in that same age bracket, Palmquist was up for the task. She began searching for a character who would avoid common tropes, “women of a certain age” going through menopause or divorce, or a woman only defined by motherhood — all important narratives, but stories that have been told multiple times.

“If we’re going to be better feminists, we have to do a better job of telling more diverse stories,” Palmquist says.

In a stroke of inspiration, the character she had been waiting for manifested: a climate scientist fighting to save the environment. And with that, Two Degrees was born.

Now playing at the Denver Center of Performing Arts through March 12, Two Degrees follows Dr. Emma Phelps, a paleoclimatologist studying climate change in Greenland who recently lost her husband.

Emma is invited to Washington D.C. to present her research at a Senate hearing in hopes of preserving the environmental protections currently in place.

Always interested in the environment, Palmquist set to work learning everything she could about climate change. She then enlisted the help of laboratories around Boulder including the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and the Institute of Alpine and Arctic Research (INSTAAR) at the University of Colorado Boulder.

At INSTAAR, Palmquist and her team met with Senior Professional Scientist Bruce Vaughn, who was able to provide background on working in Greenland and the scientific approach of a paleoclimatologist. As a scientist, Vaughn was particularly moved by the scene.

“They gave me a chance to review the script ... and I told them that was in a nutshell, from a scientist’s point of view, exactly what we all need to learn,” he says.

“We want to give the backstory and all the complete facts, but it’s like, no, cut to the chase.”

The relationship between science and politics is a complicated one, but to move toward solutions, scientists and politicians must learn to communicate and negotiate.

Vaughn cites education as the most crucial step in moving forward to curb environmental decay. Ensconced in the ivory tower of Boulder, he says, it’s tough to remember not everyone in the world is as informed about the severity of global warming.

“I’m astonished at the conversations I still ON THE BILL: Two Degrees. I don’t believe in climate change any more than I believe in gravity.’ It’s not a belief system, it’s physics. ... You can have your own opinion, but you can’t have your own physics. I don’t know how this became a partisan issue or belief system.”

The Earth is heading toward irreparable damage, and Vaughn stresses it’s humanity that pays the price.

“We’re taking our Earth to a place it hasn’t been in a very long time. The last time it was there, humans weren’t around, and we will not do so well under the circumstances for which we’re headed,” he says. “The Earth is going to be just fine.

It’s just our species, our food production, our coastal cities, our political infrastructures — it’s not going to be an easy thing to cope with. So sticking our heads in the sand doesn’t exactly help.”

With Two Degrees, Palmquist hopes to galvanize the audience, whether to take action or do more of their own research. While there’s no silver bullet solution, there are small changes to make on a personal, local, state and national level, in many sectors from industry and technology to science and policy.

As Palmquist says, “If everyone thinks, ‘Huh, if I change a little bit of my habits and you change a little bit of your habits,’ maybe this is something we can fix together.”

Imagine how confusing it would be if the Cannes Film Festival was suddenly relocated to Bordeaux? What if one year the Boulder International Film Festival was held in downtown Denver and the Telluride Film Festival decided to move up to Longs Peak? That would certainly throw Keith Ladzinski/Poumaka them for a loop. Each festival has its own special identity, and location is as much a part of that identity as is the programming.

But what if the identity of the festival is the about the restless spirit of exploration and adventure? Of doing things not because they are easy, but because they are hard?

The movies that play these kinds of festivals are about active people looking for a little more elbow room and what the world looks like from that rock over there. These movies move and the festivals ought to match that spirit.

That is true in every possible way with the Banff Mountain Film Festival, which will play multiple dates in multiple cities around the Centennial State starting February 24.

The Banff Mountain Film Festival is one of the most prestigious mountain film festivals to travel the globe, making visits to 450 communities in 40 countries.

Banff begins its journey every autumn in Banff, Alberta,

Canada with an extensive program that tackles mountains from every direction. After playing Banff, the festival then sets off on a yearlong tour where each host city picks their own lineup from the broad programming. The idea is that each venue exhibits the movies that best fit their audience. For programmers and audience members alike, it’s “choose your own adventure” in film festival form.

And though each venue’s lineup will differ slightly, the overall intent of the Banff Mountain Film Festival is to highlight unfamiliar landscapes, unsung adventurers and remote cultures. Are you itching to get out there and do something different? Here are a variety of movies designed to show you a few paths — some familiar, others less so — several challenges and some quirky individuals to consider and inspire you.

Take Poumaka (directed by Andy Mann and Keith Ladzinski from Boulder-based 3 Strings Productions), a 14-minute film that documents a V13 climb up a tower that juts out of the muggy Polynesian jungles of Ua Pou. “Blood, sweat and tears,” Libecki says to the camera after a fall scrapes his knees. “Well, there haven’t been tears yet.”

“Uh, yeah there has,” Payne counters.

There aren’t many tears in Ace and the Desert Dog (directed by Brendan Leonard, Forest Woodward, Stefan Hunt), a 9-minute film about a photographer and writer, Ace Kvale, and Genghis, an Australian cattle dog that Kvale attributes his writing too.

Ace and the Desert Dog is a short and sweet movie about the 60-day backpacking trip Kvale and Genghis undertake in honor of Kvale’s 60th birthday. The result is cheeky and light, but with the heartfelt message to slow down, take a look around and play when you can.

There is nothing slow about DreamRide (directed by Ryan Gibb), a breathtaking 5-minute plunge Forest Woodward into the beauty and wonders of Utah, Nevada, California, Oregon and Washington.

The rider is Mike Hopkins, who apparently feels comfortable in any climate and geography as long as his Diamondback bike is nestled between his legs. The narration is Graham Tracey, whose intoned voice brings gravitas to this stream-of-consciousness ride through the Ace and the Desert Dog West, immaculately photographed and expertly reminds viewers to stop and smell the roses, edited. perhaps by to taking a DreamRide’s jaw-dropping photography is backpacking trip with your dog on your 60th matched only by the impressive images of the birthday. freeskiers who feature in Ruin & Rose (directed

by Ben Sturgulewski). The film is an ambitious project: one where children in the near future play in a surreal and apocalyptic wasteland devoid of water while dreaming of a time where brave skiers carved blanketed slopes of white.

Ruin & Rose is a movie heavily indebted to the work of the narrative filmmaker Terrence Malick, as is Iran: A Skier’s Journey (directed by Jordan Manley). Much like DreamRide, both Ruin & Rose and A Skier’s Journey utilize rapid-fire editing, slow-motion photography and free association to create hallucinatory viewing experiences designed to speak to the yen inside each individual viewer more than conveying a simple and direct message in standard documentary fashion. Banff features those films too — The Perfect Flight, When We Were Knights, Metronomic are but a few examples. When these two types of movies are coupled together, the Banff Mountain Film Festival imparts both the underlying impulse and the physical exertion required of an adventurer. Film festivals aren’t just places to go and sit in the dark, they are also where one can get a shot of inspiration and encouragement to get out there and move.

The lineup playing Colorado will vary slightly from venue to venue, but with roughly 17 films — five of which feature Coloradans — Banff makes its way across the state starting on February 24 at Colorado State University in Fort Collins (Feb. 24–26) before moving on to the Rotary Club in Grand Junction (Feb. 25–26); Ute Mountaineering in Aspen (Feb. 27); the Boulder Theater, sponsored by the Access Fund (Feb. 28–March 1); The Paramount Theatre in Denver (March 2–4); Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center (March 3); Mountain Chalet in Colorado Springs (March 7–8); Crested Butte Search and Rescue (March 10–11), and finally wrapping up at Rocky Mountain Wild & San Juan Citizens Alliance in Durango (March 11).

IT WAS 1994, and Don Strasburg was

walking (running, depending on who tells the story) around his Boulder home with a 101 Dalmatians bed sheet on his head.

The P-Funk Mothership had landed in Boulder, and the linens belonged to none other than Dr. Funkenstein himself, George Clinton.

Clinton had taken to wearing the bed sheet as a costume of sorts during a three-night run of P-Funk All Stars shows in Boulder. Like the music, the sheets were getting funky.

Reminded of the story, it takes Strasburg a moment to regain composure.

“I remember that so well,” he says. “That was his outfit he wore onstage and someone said, ‘Can you take these home and wash them?’, and I remember thinking ‘Oh my god, I’ve got George Clinton’s 101 Dalmatian sheets.’”

The bed-sheet-wearing 25-year-old grew up to be a giant in the Colorado music scene: the co-president and senior talent buyer for AEG Live Rocky Mountains and AEG Live Northwest, and a co-owner of Boulder’s talent-buying authority Z2 Entertainment.

But that night in 1994 Strasburg was still a budding entrepreneur, reveling in the growing success of what he and his business partners had created, the landing site for the Holy Mothership and a host of otherworldly music still yet to come, the Fox Theatre.

The Fox was 2 years old at the time, a new addition to Boulder’s clutch of live music venues: Tulagi’s and Taylor’s on the Hill, J.J. McCabe’s on Walnut Street where the Chop House sits now, and the Dark Horse were the live-music settings de jour. The Boulder Theater was out of commission at the time as a result of former owner Richard MacLeod’s costly and ultimately untenable foray into television.

But the Fox was creating something new, a place where folks could see live music nearly every night of the week — and they could see it cheap. (Think: $7.35 for Radiohead during the Pablo Honey years.) With a complete remodel before they opened on March 6, 1992, and the installation of a world-class sound system rivaled by few other clubs in the country, the Fox became an incubator for artists, sound and lighting engineers, photographers, talent buyers and damn near anyone that graced the building at 1135 13th St. with their presence.

That was clear in 1994, when the little nightclub that could was only a toddler.

This year the Fox turns 25, and much like Strasburg at 25, it’s still running around wearing a 101 Dalmatians bed sheet, so to speak. It’s still a place for music lovers to revel, to find new music or stand so close to a cultural icon they can smell the sweat. It’s a place where local acts can grow and touring acts can gain traction. It’s where folks who want to make the music biz their biz go to learn how to be the best at their craft.

And it’s still one funky party.

A very, very brief history of the Fox The history of the Fox is well documented; its home, the building at 1135 13th St., was constructed in 1926, originally as the Rialto Theatre, which may or may not have been a vaudevillian stage. It changed hands — and street numbers, and businesses — a number of times. Few businesses lasted more than five years, save the 500-seat movie theater that was installed in 1961. That one stuck for 30 years.

And then came The Pyramid Group.

The idea for the Fox as a nightclub was born two years before the club itself came to life, back in December of 1990.

Still a student at Colorado College, a young Don Strasburg was promoting a concert for The Samples at Colorado Spring’s Fine Arts Center. It was there he Boulder Weekly

the Fox Theatre becomes a classic by met two folks that set that idea in motion: the band’s manager, Ted Guggenheim, and Samples acoustic guitar player Charles Hambleton.

The two convinced Strasburg that he was up to the task of starting a club in Boulder.

And that was the moment the idea of the Fox Theatre was born.

But there’s always a lot to do when you have a baby — or a nightclub — like amassing the capital necessary to purchase or lease a space. Then there was the very real likelihood that the space would need to be gutted and remodeled. Then there was the matter of equipping the venue with a sound system.

Strasburg was 20 years old at the time. He was going to need some help.

So, naturally, he partnered up with a couple of other 20-somethings, his buddies Dave MacKenzie, James Hambleton (Charles’ brother) and Jon O’Leary.

They eventually rounded out the crew with an old hand of the business, Dicke Sidman, a former production manager at the Boulder Theater.

At first, the team — who’d dubbed themselves The Pyramid Group — had their eyes on the Peak Theater at the 1109 Walnut Building (today the home of Boulder House), but they lost the bid. It was all for the best, really, after Strasburg stopped at the Fox Movie Theater on the Hill one day and asked if they’d be interested in selling the space.

The rest is history.

‘Where the sound is the difference’ “We hoped that the Fox would be the place that really accepted and welcomed the music community,” Strasburg says. “We felt that the other venues operating in the area at the time had a much different perspective toward the customer and how they were being treated. We felt we had to treat people like we wanted to be treated. ... At 22 years old, your perception of how you’re treated at a club is different than a 40 year old.”

So The Pyramid Group began recruiting the best and the brightest to help them create a venue that would, more than a decade later, earn a nod from Rolling Stone as the fourth best rock club in America.

One of those folks was audio wunderkind Bret Dowlen.

Dowlen is the kid who made speaker cabinets in woodshop while you made a crappy shelf that your mother pretended to love and your father hung in the spare room so you wouldn’t feel bad.

As an adult he became the man behind the sound at many of your favorite Front Range music haunts.

He built sound systems at the Fillmore, Ogden, Paramount and Bluebird in Denver, and the system at the Black Sheep in Colorado Springs. He built state-ofthe-art speaker cabinets at Red Rocks, and has managed the sound for countless (probably hundreds) of shows there over the years.

It was the speakers at Red Rocks that gave birth to the game-changing system at the Fox. “No one had done anything quite like what the Fox was gonna turn out to be, so it was important to set the bar pretty high,” Dowlen says. “At the time there were very few speaker cabinets available commercially — EAW (Eastern Acoustic Works) out of box ... there were a few others out there from England, but they were expensive and didn’t sound that good, especially at this altitude. It takes some different tuning at low frequency chambers and subchambers to make it work up here. So I had the advantage of tuning [the Red Rocks system] at this altitude.”

He got the notion that the same system might be good for the new club in Boulder.

The Fox was still being remodeled when Dowlen joined the effort, and things were still a little rough around the edges.

“When I walked in, it sounded like a basketball arena: no seats, no curtains, they were chipping out parts of the floor at the time and it was a hideous sounding place,” Dowlen says. “So we had them spray down the roof and sidewalls with what was at the time new[ly developed] foam insulation, which deadened the room significantly.”

Though he had some of the equipment in stock from his work at Red Rocks, Dowlen had to borrow “a bunch of money” to get the rest of the system built and installed. It was a big venture for what was then a small company.

“I think it paid off in the long run,” Dowlen says. “Fox kind of obtained a life of its own, in large part due to Dickie Sidman.”

In what Strasburg has called his “least favorite memory” of the Fox, Sidman passed away in 1995, just three years after the Fox set sail.

“He was the coolest guy. He was a musician as well,” Dowlen says of Sidman. “He knew how he wanted [the Fox] to run. He liked to make repairs. into a pissing match of sorts over who was going to play first during their co-headlining set at the Fox. “So I’m running back and forth, up and down the alley between their busses, their mangers playing me like a ping pong ball.”)

Emerging rock acts hit the stage, like The Killers, The Strokes, Ryan Adams, Sunny Day Real Estate — and Radiohead.

Strasburg used to frequent a nearby pinball arcade in those earliest days. His cell phone would get the best signal there, and he could take a breather from work. He remembers a particular day in ’93 when “a short guy with a fluttering eye” came in.

Strasburg remembers asking, “Wanna play pinball?” His new friend replied, “Yeah. My name’s Thom.”

“I remember teaching him to play this pinball game; he was literally as good at this game as I was,” Strasburg, an admitted pinball junky, says of the Radiohead front man Yorke. “He was just so tuned in.

[Radiohead] was on the ‘Creep’ tour.

Nobody thought Radiohead was going to be much, just a one-hit wonder. I walked away thinking this band is going to be massive because nobody does that to a pinball game.”

As the repute of the Fox grew larger, playing there became a dream for many bands, including those who called Boulder home. Local rockers Rose Hill Drive cut their teeth at the Fox in the early aughts.

They went on to perform with other Fox veterans like Gov’t Mule, Robert Randolph and Wilco, as well as Stone Temple Pilots, The Who, Queens of the Stone Age, Van Halen and Aerosmith (none of which played the Fox).

In 2007, Rolling Stone called Rose Hill Drive one of the top ten bands to watch.

And it all started at the Fox. Lead guitarist Daniel Sproul remembers going to Boulder’s preeminent nightclub before he could even get in the door.

“We’d go behind the alley and stand by the doors in back and listen,” Sproul says. “I remember doing that with Big Head Todd. They were a huge inspiration for us. I must have seen them 40 times in concert.”

Rose Hill Drive will release their fourth record — their first in six years — on the day of their Fox anniversary show on March 9.

Spending years at the Fox, both on the stage and in the alley, Sproul made friends with the employees.

He’s known former cocktail waitress Lisa Siciliano since he was 15.

Siciliano worked at the Fox from September of 1992 to 2001. She’s now a sought-after photographer, shooting regularly at Red Rocks and the Boulder Theater. She never went to school for photography, but her job at the Fox gave her compelling subject matter and an ever-growing pool of connections.

Her job was tough — serving drinks to a room with no sections or tables, carrying as many as 40 drinks at a time, trays lined, the pockets of her apron and pants stuffed, no computers, just a pen and pad — but it wasn’t always thankless. Maceo Parker brought her on stage once so the crowd could cheer for her, and he even encouraged her passion for photography.

She’s got some stories she’d rather not see in print, but she’s damn proud to say that she never took up a single offer to go on a date, save the one she took from her husband, who she met in the café that once operated in the front room of the Fox. Siciliano’s co-worker Peter “Spot” Sheetz (don’t even worry about the nickname) has rubbed elbows with some rock royalty in his 21 years behind the bar at the Fox. The goodnatured Sheetz got to go fishing with Colonel Les Claypool himself. Maceo Parker (everybody’s got a story about the kindness of Maceo) and his band pushed sound check back half an hour just to sit with Sheetz and watch The Simpsons.

But perhaps the best story from the Fox is that of Tony Behrendt, aka Autograph Man. If you ever want to know the date that the band Roshambo changed their name to Free Beer and opened for the Barenaked Ladies, Behrendt can help you with that. He’s collected more than 2,500 autographs, many of those from the Fox. His apartment in South Boulder is floor to ceiling memorabilia, most of it signed: posters, mirrors, guitars, t-shirts, woodcarvings, clocks handmade from old vinyl records.

Cheryl Liguori, a former general manager at the Fox and current CEO of Z2 Entertainment, calls Behrendt their “unofficial archivist.”

Behrendt’s life in Boulder seems both serendipitous and predestined, precipitated by a phone call from a CU student he didn’t know while Behrendt was at boarding school in Boston. He was just 19 when he moved out to Boulder, but he was already an avid autograph collector and rabid music aficionado.

“I didn’t grow up in Boulder, and I didn’t have much to do, and [the people at the Fox] were so cool to me, and I would just introduce myself to everybody,” he says. “I started off with Acoustic Junction, Leftover Salmon, The Winebottles, The Samples, Doug and the Thugs... I just always loved music.”

And that’s the way it went. Behrendt has met nearly everyone that has played at the Fox, often getting an entire band’s set of signatures. When he ran a doughnut shop back in 2000, he gave Sia her first doughtnut when Zero7 was in town for a show (he says she ate four). He claims to have played pool with the guys from Naughty By Nature, and he had his autograph requested by Coolio, Bootsy Collins and at least five other people. And everybody you meet at the Fox will back Behrendt up.

And that’s really what’s kept the Fox Theatre going for 25 years: everybody’s got your back.

“I think it’s critical everyone knows that Dave MacKenzie, James Hambleton, Jon [O’Leary], these guys are integral to everything the Fox is today,” Strasburg says. “Each one of them brought so much to the table and deserve more accolades than I do. All the people who work day in and day out: Spot who’s been there for decades, to the kids coming in right now. I can relax and reminisce on my couple of years of 24-hour-a-day work because of all of them.”

Always ‘Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell’ Punk forefathers, Social Distortion, are headed our way

SOCIAL DISTORTION, along with their

contemporaries, Agent Orange, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, X, The Vandals, D.l., Bad Religion, T.S.O.L. and the Offspring, helped shape the original Southern California punk sound in the late 1970s. Although originally much more of a “hardcore” band in the beginning, Social Distortion successfully evolved, incorporating heavy influences from blues, country, rockabilly and rock ‘n’ roll (all while maintaining its original punk-rock edge). The scorching guitars and distinct vocal style from the first album, 1983’s Mommy’s Little Monster, still remain. Today’s sound is more refined, yet it still captures that unique Social Distortion sound.

February marks the 25th Danny Clinch anniversary of Social Distortion’s 1992 album, Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell. The record was the follow up to 1990’s self-titled, Social Distortion. Both albums went gold. Social D was a “Modern Rock” (the radio format term used before “alternative”) favorite from the get-go.

In the late ’80s and early ’90s, the alternative radio format was just starting to gain traction on a national level. Los Angeles’ KROQ (which pioneered the rock of the ’80s/ modern rock/alternative sound), and in particular, DJ “Rodney on the ROQ,” helped cement the band in the genre from the very beginning.

Front man and founder Mike Ness, has always written songs from his life’s experiences and related observations. It’s his authenticity and ability to tell a story that has helped the band become a perennial favorite in alternative music. In the classic spirit of country and blues, many songs speak of the difficult trials and tribulations of life. Social Distortion concerts are usually packed, high-energy affairs and all-around great shows.

When asked about what to expect on this tour through Colorado, Ness says, “We’ll play Heaven and Hell... I’ve also been writing and I would like people to hear new stuff and to know more is coming. I felt like getting on the road again was a good way to kick-start everything... the writing, the pre-production process. It’s just something about playing together every night. The chemistry is already there and everyone’s already in that mode.”

Colorado has been a Social D stop since the band started touring on a national level in the late ’80s. “I feel like it’s just one of the first places we established roots,” Ness says. “I know where to go, where to eat, where to stay. It was one of our regular stops.”

least a couple of generations. Ness says the demographic at his shows has changed over the years. “It’s been a very interesting phenomenon to watch over the last 20-25 years. The crowd is bringing young kids. It’s so awesome to me... parents bringing kids, kids bringing parents to shows. I never wanted to be just a punk band playing to punk rockers. I felt like we already had them,” he says. “I always wanted more variety, people who just appreciate good music. I wanted us to be more universal. I thought when we had that I’d feel validated.”

Although there is no target release date for a new album, Ness says new material is in the works. “The main thing is that I’m neck deep in writing right now. I’m really happy with the stuff I’m writing. I put a lot of pressure on myself. It raises the bar and makes it more of a challenge.

I feel at this point in my career, I have to write the record to set the stage for the next 20 years.”

Traditionally, Social D songs have focused on hard luck, women and life.

However, for the new album Ness would like to incorporate a political theme for a song or two. “Typically, I don’t write politically, but I do feel the need right now given what’s going on,” he says. “It’s a change because it’s out of my wheelhouse.

You can’t just write a punk rock grocery list of things you’re pissed off about. That’s already been done.”

Ness says he’s also become a bit of a historian. “Learning about history helps me have a clear picture of what’s happening right now. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become a lot more aware and active. I want to write songs that make the Left and the Right think about things.”

College radio has always been important to Social Distortion, and the entire alternative music scene, for decades. The entire genre started in record-stacked, basement college stations back in the mid-’70s and early ’80s. College DJs broke early punk and new wave bands coming out of places like NYC’s CBGB (Blondie, Ramones, Television, Talking Heads) and California. They also put bands like Devo, R.E.M. and the B-52s on the map.

“I think the government does not want college radio because it does not want people pointing out things and making them accountable,” Ness says. “I can’t express the urgency for that. That’s the youth, and they need to say what they need to say and get the message to the people to hear it.

If it wasn’t for college radio, I don’t know how Social Distortion would have survived.”

Music of Renaissance England forms “Voices and Viols” program

choral piece for “only” 19 parts is almost too easy for the experienced voices of Boulder’s Ars Nova Singers.

Last year they sang two pieces in 40 parts, which artistic director Thomas Edward Morgan admits was “a challenging thing to do — in the middle of winter and flu season!” Each of the 40 parts had to be sung by only a single singer, so any absences would have scuttled the performance.

With those works successfully performed last year, the group is now adding a 19-voice motet from the Renaissance to their list of musical accomplishments. “The group discovered that having done [the 40-voice pieces] last year, this other piece is considerably more accessible,” Morgan says.

It will be part of “Voices and Viols,” a joint concert between Ars Nova and STRING, a viola da gamba trio directed by Ann Marie Morgan.

“Ann Marie had approached me a couple of years ago about doing a program this Viola da gamba trio season,” Thomas STRING will perform with Ars Nova Singers in “Voices Morgan says. “She is a and Viols.” world-class performer on her instrument, so any opportunity you get to perform with an instrumentalist of that caliber is something that you want to take advantage of.”

The viola da gamba is a fretted string instrument of the Renaissance period that is played with a bow. The name, meaning “viol for the leg,” refers to the fact that the instruments are held between the legs, like a modern cello.

STRING was formed in 2016 by Anne Marie Morgan with fellow gambists Sarah Biber and Sandra Miller to perform music for gamba as it was originally heard.

Because the gamba was particularly popular in England during the 16th and 17th centuries, that was the music that was the natural fit for their joint program with Ars Nova. “Voices and Viols” will include verse anthems works by William Byrd, Thomas Morley and Orlando Gibbons, three of the most important Renaissance English composers.

choir and soloists or smaller groups. “This allows us to have the alternation of textures between the viols and solo voices that play together, and the full chorus,” Morgan explains.

“Singers love to sing the music of this era because with independent voices, they always have significant melody all the time,” he says. “There’s wonderful music from the English Renaissance, and when these pieces were performed in chapel, they were frequently done with viols instead of with organ.

“So this is a wonderful opportunity to explore this repertoire in the way it was originally heard.”

The program opens with verse anthems by Byrd and concludes with similar works by Morley and Gibbons. In between there will be a variety of contrasting works, including small sacred motets by 16th-century Italian composer Orazio Vecchi sung by a few men from the full chorus. There will also be other works in various combinations of gambas with small vocal groups.

In each half of the concert, STRING will play a set of two pieces for gambas alone.

Each set will open with a fantasia for three voices, followed by a set of variations on the popular 16thcentury tune known as “Browning,” or “The leaves be greene.” One of the most common works for gamba “consorts,” or ensembles, “Browning” was set by most English composers of the time, most often in a series of virtuoso variations.

And the program of English Renaissance music gave Thomas Morgan the opening to perform Carver’s 19-voice “O bone Jesu.” A meditation on the word “Jesu” — which Ars Nova will sing with the Scottish pronunciation of Latin as “Jay-ziu,” — this is a work not often heard in live concerts.

“It’s quite a challenging piece” Morgan says. “You have large 19-part textures that we perform with the whole ensemble. And then interspersed are wonderful, very decorated trios and quartets, different numbers of solo voices. It’s really an unusual piece.”

Besides the Carver piece, what Morgan is most excited about is the opportunity to perform with the gambas.

“Because they don’t use modern vibrato, the gamba doesn’t have as directly emotional a sound,” he says. “It’s a much more subtle thing. When you get to hear the music on the level of detail that the gambas can do, it really inspires the singers to perform that way, too.

“It makes for a unique showcase of this repertoire, and challenges both the singers and the audience to tune in to the details.”

Director Alex Cox returns to Boulder with his latest film ‘Tombstone-Rashomon’

ew filmmakers are as devoted to cinema as Alex Cox. Since his debut in 1984, Cox has made movies for the studios, for BBC’s Channel 4, for Roger Corman, for his students and for himself. He’s penned three books on movies, taught screenwriting at the University of Colorado Boulder and back in 2015, he retired to the woods of Oregon to write and live. But the woods didn’t hold him long and last year he ventured to the Arizona desert to film his latest movie, Tombstone-Rashomon, a passion project that dates back to his days as a high schooler.

Even passing fans will recognize Tombstone as home to one of the most famous shootouts in the American Jason Graham West: the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. The activity took as Virgil Earp talks with all of 30 seconds and when all was said and done, Tom Director Alex and Frank McLaury and Bill Clanton lay dead in the Cox. dust while Doc Holliday and the Earp brothers —Virgil, Morgan and Wyatt — all stood victorious. According to the history books, it’s the moment when the law pushed back against the lawlessness of the frontier and what transpired on Wednesday, Oct. 26, 1881 has become the stuff of legend.

But legends have a way of being manipulated. Were the Earps, and temporary policeman Holliday, justified in their actions? Did the Clanton and the McLaury brothers have it coming to them? Were they set up?

“When I was a teenager ... I read Stuart N. Lake’s Wyatt Earp: Frontier Marshall,“ Cox tells Boulder Weekly. “It’s such a romantic story. It’s so heroic and so prejudice in favor of the Earps and Holliday — I thought, ‘What a great story! I’d like to make this as a film.’”

Nearly five decades later, Cox’s teenage fantasies have come to fruition, but not without a little inspiration from his students. During Cox’s tenure at CU, he crowdfunded a feature film adaptation of Harry Harrison’s Bill, the Galactic Hero and used his students to bring it to the screen.

Bill was funded by a successful Kickstarter campaign, one that gave Cox hope that there might be a new way to make movies. But as Cox quickly learned, the science fiction of Bill proved an easier sell than the Western style of TombstoneRashomon.

“When I saw how little money we raised, [I thought] ‘We are so screwed, man!’

Cox says with a hearty laugh. “We were so screwed because we had no money at all.”

Cox and company adjusted their already micro budget to $50,000 but still only managed to raise $31,642 with 297 backers on Indiegogo. Not nearly enough to tell their Tombstone story with the ambition Cox had in mind. Thankfully, friends in high places came to the rescue.

“We were really lucky because a video streaming company, Fandor, came in and added to the budget,” Cox explains. “Then the producers of Snowden and the Iggy Pop documentary, Gimme Danger, also came in and matched what we raised from Indiegogo and Fandor. So, it was still minimal but at least we could afford to feed people and have horses.”

And with a crew of roughly 60 people, Cox set off to Old Costume Tucson Studios to shoot his version of the Gunfight at the Designer Samantha O.K. Corral, only his version would be a spin on the nature Toney with of narrative and drew inspiration from Akira Kurosawa’s Alex Cox working on 1950 seminal film about conflicting firsthand accounts, Doc Holliday.

“The style of Rashômon is perfect for this because there are these conflicting testimonies and you have no real way of knowing who is telling the truth,” Cox explains.

Cox based his script on the testimony the survivors gave following the shooting. To recreate this visually, Cox uses interviews from the surviving participants to introduce each account — seen here in flashbacks — of the shooting and what caused it.

“I really wanted to parody the Errol Morris style,” Cox says of the interviews.

“Where you bring in that cheesy piece of gray cloth and hang it behind the person, and then have them look down the barrel of the camera as if that conveys truth.”

But no specific account of an event can be labeled “The Truth” and to convey that, Cox and his editor and producer, Merritt Crocker, utilized various visual cues.

“Every character has a different color palette for their flashbacks,” Cox explains.

“One of them is magenta oriented, one of them is very saturated, one of them is black and white ... “We played around a little bit with the idea that in the course of the interview [the interviewers] picked a side and the side was Wyatt Earp,” Cox says. “You see them kind of working with Earp to make him more heroic. ... You see how the media create heroes and villains.”

That creation of Earp as the hero — specifically his connection to the law — is what makes Tombstone-Rashomon prescient in 2017.

“We showed the film in Tucson at The Loft [Film Festival], and it played immediately after a documentary about militarized policing in the U.S. called Do Not Resist,” Cox recounts.

“After the screening of Do Not Resist, they had a panel discussion with civil liberties people, the chief of police, and then they showed Tombstone-Rashomon,” Cox continues. “It was actually a very good double bill because a lot of what our film is about is: How do you police a population which has no respect for the police, and no reason to respect them, and is armed?”

That connection between the past and the present is what makes TombstoneRashomon work, both as a parable and as an entry into the oeuvre of Alex Cox. “Films aren’t just dioramas to be put in the museum,” Cox says. “Films are a part of our contemporary existence. Films should reflect the world in which we live. When you’ve got things that are so obviously parallel, it seems to me a lost opportunity if you don’t jump on it.”

he St Julien is kind of a special spot for the Boulder Weekly editorial staff, especially on Thursdays after the paper comes out. We’re typically tired — haggard might be the word — and every now and then (don’t judge us) we’d kind of like to have a good meal and a glass of wine in the middle of the day.

Just one glass of wine. Most of the time. Don’t judge.

On those occasions, we head to the French-inspired Jill’s Restaurant at the St Julien Hotel for their weekday Oh Là Là Lunch buffet, which just so happens to come with a free glass of wine, thus the reason we often only have one glass.

Jill’s has the ambience and cuisine of an upscale restaurant without the ostentation: white linen table clothes with matching napkins, big windows for natural light and chefs working at an open kitchen who often chat with diners about the dishes. The delightful Philippe Antoine — a man with a rich history in the restaurant business, smashing taste in suites and an unparalleled moustache — leads the crew in both style and personality.

Our own motley crew has some specific dietary needs — some of us don’t eat meat, sometimes we don’t eat dairy, some of us are allergic to squash and some of us have absolutely no gastronomic quirks whatsoever. Despite this, New Yorkers will still claim to be the forefathers of cheesecake.

Today, chefs in the United States and Canada use cream cheese; in Italy, they use ricotta; Germany, the Netherlands and Poland use a crumbly, almost fetalike cheese called quark.

In France cheesecake is often made with Neufchâtel, which some say might be the oldest cheese in France. French Neufchâtel is an unripened cheese, made with cow’s milk. When left to ripen, it develops a soft, bloomy rind, like brie. American Neufchâtel cheese has a consistency that’s similar to cream cheese, but it’s softer and moister, with about one-third of the fat content.

When used for cheesecake, it creates a light, fluffy pie.

Jill’s serves up a version of this light cheesecake with a lightly crunch, subtly buttery graham cracker crust. The sweetness is mild, almost more savory than sweet, with just a hint of that bloomy cheese flavor.

A

few years ago, the humble egg went through a public relations nightmare. Blemished with the falsehood of causing high cholesterol, eggs scared many people away. Health seeking consumers eschewed the nutritious yolk, favoring the boring, flavorless white, if they ate eggs at all. A sad sight.

Then, along came a Harvard School of Public Health study, stating that the dietary cholesterol in eggs did not raise cholesterol levels in the majority of the population and found no association with heart disease. Slowly, like the picked-on kid in elementary school who grows up to be a tech billionaire, eggs became popular. But not without adding more confusion. We’re now faced with a multitude of choices from Cage-Free to Pastured to Omega-3, a morass of labeling that can be confusing and many of the monikers mean nothing.

But they capture your heart and money. To clear up the pasture, here’s the skinny on eggs.

The Nutrition Breakdown One whole egg weighs in at 6 grams of protein, around 70 calories and heaps of vitamin B12, A, E and lutein (good for the eyes), as well as minerals such as iron, selenium and calcium.

How to Shop for and Store Eggs

• Buy in bulk. Eggs stay fresh about a month after you bring them home, usually long after the sell-buy date is past.

Keep them in the middle of the refrigerator, not in the door, to retain their freshness.

• The color of the shell only indicates the variety of chicken the eggs came from, not the quality.

• The fresher the egg, the cloudier the egg white will be since it contains carbon dioxide after harvesting. The white of an older egg will become more transparent once the CO2 escapes through the shell. Born on dates help at the store, but this will help you determine the age of of the dozen once it’s home.

• What the hen is fed determines the color of the yolk. Look for a darker yellow hue, which indicates a more natural diet, rather than industrial grain feed.

The Labels, Revealed The Helpful: • “Free-Range” means that hens live outside of cages and must have access to the outdoors. It’s not mandated how much access, so that’s up to the farmer. Want a clear conscious? Buy local and get to know or research the farmer you’re buying from.

• “Cage Free” indicates the hen can roam about indoors but do not have access to the outdoors. They can spread their wings, nest and do other chicken things.

But, in this instance, their diet consists of what the farmer gives them rather than pecking about outside for stuff in the dirt. This means less flavor and nutrition.

• “Certified Organic” meets the standards of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) organic program and the birds must be cage-free with outdoor access, given no antibiotics, and their food must be organic and vegetarian.

• ‘Omega-3’ or ‘DHA’ eggs are produced by hens that are fed high amounts of omega-3 fatty acid food like flaxseed. Check the packaging to make sure DHA and EPA are included in the fatty acids, those linked to heart health.

• “Certified Humane” ensures that the chickens live uncaged with room for nesting and perching. The nonprofit organization Humane Farm Animal Care works with the USDA to inspect and certify farms.

• “Animal Welfare Approved” is a label created by the Animal Welfare Institute to indicate the eggs came from an independent family farm with flocks of up to only 500 birds, where the hens spend as much time as they want in pasture and have never had their beaks altered (this sometimes occurs in chicken houses that are overcrowded).

The Virtually Useless Label Fodder: • “Fed a Vegetarian Diet” doesn’t mean much since the majority of time, chickens are fed grain products.

• “Hormone Free” is the same since chickens are rarely treated with hormones (unlike beef cattle).

• “Natural” only means that the egg contains no artificial flavors or colors. Duh. • “United Egg Producers Certified” attests that the company gives food and water to its caged hens. Um... yeah. I hope so.

So whether you’re laying the foundations for a healthier diet or simply trying to mix up your breakfast options, fear no more the ordinary egg and its yolk.

Turning Japanese

t smells like stale vodka when you sniff it. Then it singes your throat with its flaming jet-fuel flavor, rendering your throat desiccated and begging for mercy. Sake. This memory is why I avoided it for umpteen years. But a sake enthusiast recently transformed me, and I learned that this drink, at least the quality stuff, is worth re-exploring.

Sake is not a spirit, although the lower quality ones certainly taste like a $1 shot in a college bar. It’s often described as “rice wine,” but its production is closer to grain-fermentation like beer. However, it tastes closer to wine and isn’t carbonated. Yes, confusing, I know.

Sake production begins by “polishing” the outer layer of specially selected short-grain rice to expose its inner starch. After the rice is cleaned, soaked and steamed, sake brewers use a Japanese mold called koji to break down the starch into sugar for fermentation. ing this sugar into alcohol; then it’s filtered, pasteurized — except for some specialty sakes — and bottled. After a six-month aging period, it’s ready to drink.

Unlike wine, sake doesn’t improve with age and should be consumed within six months after bottling. The fresh ones should be transparent, so shy away from those taking on a darker hue.

Several different types of “premium” sake exist. To be labeled “premium,” at least 40 percent of the rice grain must be polished away, and sometimes as little as 30 percent of the grain remains after this arduous process. This is one reason for the higher price of this Japanese specialty drink. The best sakes I tried were the ginjo, junmai and daiginjo varieties. Junmai sake is full-bodied, earthy and smacks of wild mushrooms. And it is also the best pairing with sushi. Ginjo tastes lightbodied and has a slightly fruity aroma. Daiginjo falls one quality step above the ginjo, and is the cleanest and nuttiest. There’s also unfiltered, cloudy sake with a milky appearance — the lack of filtration leaves particles of rice floating in it.

In style, sakes range from sweet to dry. The sweetness profile in all of these “wines” varies, so it’s best to ask your server before ordering. I found the best selections hailed from Japan, but Oregon’s Momokawa efforts aren’t bad.

Premium sakes should be served chilled or at room temperature. The hot sakes you’ll find in many places are heated to cover up their cheap, harsh flavors, much like extra cold beer covers up its faults. Heating sake also gives it that Kamikaze taste, leading many to believe sake is high in alcohol. But in reality, sake is about 15 percent alcohol — only slightly higher than wine. Incidentally, sake contains no sulfites and is free from hangover-inducing congeners found in many wines and dark-colored spirits. Bonus.

I tend to think that sake is best before dinner, as an appetizer, or with oilier fish. Try a lighter, cleaner sake with spicy Asian foods or sushi. It’s an acquired taste, but don’t rule it out.

Fukucho Junmai Ginjo “Moon on the Water:” Smells like jasmine and goes down so smooth it’s almost the anti-sake. The most ‘wine like’ of those I tasted.

Tour de brew: Wrapping up Stout Month Mountain Sun folds all of Colorado into the mix

T

here are many pleasures to discover during Stout Month, but new beers and new breweries are chief among them. For the past four years, Mountain Sun has featured exclusively Colorado beers on their guest tap list and this year, they had no less than 29 stouts from breweries all over the Centennial State.

“We try to mix it up and share the love with as many local breweries as we can,” Mountain Sun’s Director of Brewery Operations John Fiorilli tells Boulder Weekly. “The beers themselves are seldom the same just because everyone’s experimenting and everyone has something new every year.”

Cannonball Creek brewer Brian Hutchinson has been experimenting with one stout in particular ever since the Golden brewery opened its doors in 2013 — the Imperial Almond Chocolate Stout (9.6% ABV).

“I hate having a beer that uses an ingredient in the name that doesn’t taste like it,” Hutchinson says. “I’ve always found working with nuts in beer to be particularSusan France ly interesting just because they are so subtle most of the time. ... It took me a couple of iterations of this beer to really get to a point where it really lived up to its namesake.”

Drinking the Imperial Almond Chocolate Stout is like sinking your teeth into an Almond Joy, which is precisely what Hutchinson had in mind.

A similar approach was taken by Ska Brewing, located in Durango, with their Autumnal Molé Stout Makenzie Ketchersio loves to serve up a nice, dark, Chocolate Stout to her thirsty patrons.

(5.8%), a beer brewed with three chili peppers: Ancho, Guajillo and Hatch Green Chiles. Few beers exhibit Colorado’s southwest flavor quite like the Molé Stout and that’s thanks to the chilies, which, as Ska’s Arlo Grammatica says, “It’s on everything here.”

“It’s fun putting a big bag of chilies in the beer,” Grammatica says. “Chilies tend to keep giving, so you really have to watch the timing and how long you keep them in there.”

“I feel like [Mountain Sun’s] tap list grows every year, and they’ve been featuring more unique beers,” Wild Woods Brewery’s Erin Evans says. Boulder’s own Wild Woods has been featured on Mountain Sun’s tap wall the past four Stout Months, and each year Stout Month brings a little more attention to their brewery.

“The Smores Stout, people recognize us for that,” Evans says. “We actually sent them a double chocolate version of our Smores Stout. We specifically brewed a smaller batch of it just to go to Stout Month locations.”

But some stout drinkers are just looking for a proper balance of roasted malts.

That is what makes Durango Brewing Co.’s Imperial Stout (8%) so enjoyable, it’s a hearty beer with a lingering malty finish; just the sort of stout people look for during the colder, darker days of the year. It’s one that former Mountain Sun brewery employee, now with Durango Brewing, Nate Watkins takes pride in.

“I love putting the beer we make beside the best beer you can get,” Watkins says.

This sense of camaraderie is what makes Fiorilli’s job at Mountain Sun easier and a heck of a lot more fun.

“Every year it just gets easier and easier to fill the taps with awesome stouts that are within 100 miles of us,” he says.

Inside a sanctuary in East Boulder, the experience was finally underway with a ritualistic intake of the “sacrament” performed in each of the seven directions — east, south, west, north, earth, sky, interior.

Inhaling so much cannabis in such a short amount of time put me far, far past the height of my typical dose. When the time came, I was more than ready to lie down, be still, close my eyes and discover what came next. Loosely, I wrapped a piece of fabric over my eyes and went deep inside.

Immediately, I lost sense of time and place and my body felt as if it was shuttling through space. From behind the darkness of my blindfold I was swarmed with atypical somatic distortions and disorienting visuals. I felt waves of warmth followed by cold, my body producing inexplicable spasms of energy. I had vivid imaginations of my mother, of children, of an orange glow and yes, I even had an encounter with Beyoncé. Never have I felt so in touch with the origin of creativity.

Soon my internal world was interrupted by the external and I became aware of the group, of which I was only a part. I heard their noises, sensed their movements and suddenly became very aware that I was the only woman in the room — I felt the responsibility of holding that space but also felt slightly afraid.

Heightened to a defensive state, my body grew tense and I watched it transform from flesh into a crystalline structure as shards of rose quartz grew out of me in every direction. Later, McQueen told me rose quartz is the stone of the heart and I thought it beautiful that, faced with fear, I sprouted an armor of compassion.

My experience was different than a psychedelic one, less intense only because the thinking self came along for the ride, a capable agent in an otherwise trippy world. But the experience was, as McQueen had promised, “deeply transformative.” And I can’t help but stand in awe of the way in which cannabis guided me to confront my own prejudices, just as it has been doing for many along the likewise “deeply transformative” journey of legalization.

et’s hope this isn’t an example of fake news in The New York Times.

Last Friday (Feb. 17) the Times reported that it had “obtained” an “internal memo” from the Office of Management and Budget that contained a “hit list” of nine federal agencies and programs it wanted to see eliminated.

The list included several perennial Republican targets for elimination, including the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Legal Services Corporation, AmeriCorps and the National Endowments for the Arts and the Humanities. No surprises there.

But it also included one agency that you would most definitely not expect to find on a Republican administration’s hit list: The Office of National Drug Control Policy (aka the Office of the Drug Czar).

“Mr. Trump has spoken volubly about the nation’s drug problems, yet the list includes the White House’s Office of National Drug Control Policy, which dispenses grants to reduce drug use and drug trafficking,” the Times reported without elaboration.

“Grants to reduce drug use and drug trafficking” isn’t the only thing the office dispenses. It also dispenses a steady stream of anti-marijuana propaganda and outright lies. It also has actively campaigned against legalization initiatives. When it comes to providing information about marijuana, the office is required by law to disseminate only information about its ill-effects and is prohibited by law from funding research that might show it has medical benefits.

(The office is also the rock that Kevin Sabet, the director of the anti-legalization pressure group Project SAM and self-described “quarterback of the anti-legalization movement,” crawled out from

Import Bank, which has been targeted for elimination repeatedly by congressional Republicans, but which helps finance bigticket American export products. Like airliners made by Boeing. Especially airliners made by Boeing. Which happen to be one of the county’s largest manufactured exports in dollar terms.

The day before the Times’ story on the hit list came out (Feb. 16) Trump was in South Carolina touring Boeing’s assembly plant and praising the company and its products. Effusively. Which raises doubts about the accuracy of the story.

Still, there is one good reason to believe Trump may well be thinking about giving the chop to the Drug Czar and his retainers: They’re a bunch of losers.

The Office of National Drug Control Policy has been doing its thing for 28 years. The most notable thing that happened on its watch, if you don’t count the arrests of say 40 million Americans (half of them for pot) and the growth of federal spending on the drug war to about $25 billion a year, is the emergence of a national opioid epidemic that is currently killing about 15,000 Americans a year. In other words, the policies created by the Office of National Drug Control Policy leave a lot to be desired.

If the Office of National Drug Control Policy was the policy-making arm of a private sector corporation, the company would have sacked everyone in it for incompetence and non-performance years ago.

Trump has never been bashful of getting rid of non-performing business units and firing non-performing employees. It’s hard to think of a more obvious example in the Washington swamp of both than the Drug Czar and his court, and more deserving candidates for a presidential “You’re fired.”

Sending the Office of National Drug Control Policy and the Drug Czar to the budgetary guillotine would be terrific news, but the Times’ report should be read with some caution, for at least two reasons.

First, the paper reported the memo was circulated within the Office of Management and Budget on Tuesday, Feb. 14, three days before former congressman and budgetary hard-ass Mick Mulvaney, Trump’s choice for budget director, was confirmed by the Senate. That suggests the hit list may reflect the work product of staffers and not the thinking of the director.

A new study conducted by the University College London (UCL) concludes — drumroll please — that having a pet cat during childhood does not cause mental illness later in life.

Imagine that!

The mere existence of this study might be shocking to some of us, especially those who enjoy the company of our furry feline friends. But back a couple years ago, multiple studies linked cat ownership with developing schizophrenia later in life.

The folks that conducted the UCL study say the pervious studies linking the two were misleading and flawed.

No kidding, since cats are pretty popular house pets and schizophrenia only affects roughly 1 percent of the world population... We’re just glad hardworking people are spending their time proving things we already knew were true.

Now we’re not suggesting the dog people had anything to do with this.

But we know some cat people working to prove dog ownership leads to unemployment and baldness. The conclusions are yet to be determined.
