(Re: “Foreskin follies,” Uncensored, Feb. 16.) Way to go Pamela! Thank you for your attention to the practice of infant circumcision. There are some good reasons to keep the penis intact.

Like I read somewhere: “A foreskin is not a birth defect.”

Patricia Kay Youngson/Boulder Thank you for your sensitive and balanced reporting on this issue. Most articles either refuse to present the other side of the circumcision debate or are simply ignorant. Not only have epidemiological studies failed to find any benefit from circumcision with respect to sexually transmitted diseases, the U.S. has both the highest rate of HIV among heterosexuals and circumcision in the developed world. This is not speculation but what the CDC and other national health services show. As an intervention, circumcision has been tried and found wanting. Now, with all the press about circumcision possibly preventing HIV infections among heterosexual men, we may be seeing risk compensation, where men who are circumcised think they are protected. This will only make the epidemic in the U.S. worse and, in my

opinion, is dangerous and unethical.

Let’s compare and contrast circumcision to the polio vaccine. Both have been widely available for the last 60 years, both have clinical trials showing efficacy.

Now, if the countries that had the highest vaccination compliance had the highest polio infection rate, after 60 years of use, would any sane person use it? Yet that is exactly what we see with circumcision and sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV. Polio is unheard of in the U.S., HIV is more common here than in any developed country. Not only is it more common in general, but also among heterosexual men and heterosexual women. Moreover, the U.S. has the highest rate of HIV-infected heterosexu-

al women of any English-speaking developed country: two women for every heterosexual man. Move north, across the Canadian border, and that number drops to one to one. Clearly, the U.S. is doing something very wrong, and it is infecting men and women with HIV. As for the cost of circumcisions paid for by Medicaid, the data cited by your article was only for the cost paid to the attending physician under Medicaid.

Looking at the data in the National Inpatient Sample (NIS), the Kids Inpatient Database (KID) and the Statewide Inpatient Database (SID), available through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, shows the true expenditure to be 10 times

higher.

The average circumcised child spends 0.2 days longer in the hospital and requires other interventions, all of which are charged to Medicaid. Not only does this bespeak of the risks associated with infant circumcision, it also increases the cost to Colorado from $200,000 per year to over $1.9 million, money that should be used to buy books for schoolchildren and supply needed funds for Medicaid recipients who are in critical need. Circumcision is truly tripping over dollars to pick up nickles.

Highroad The poppy war in Afghanistan

h to be in Afghanistan again, when the poppies are in bloom!

For a symbol of how America’s decade-long war is going in this faraway land, look at the beautiful fields of red poppies flowering so bountifully there.

Unfortunately, that bounty symbolizes a failure of an ambitious Western initiative against the Taliban forces. Poppies are the raw material for producing 4 February 23, 2012

opium, and just one Afghan province produces some 40 percent of the world’s opium poppies. That illicit flower power fuels the Taliban with the money to buy weapons, train fighters, bribe Afghan officials and otherwise make war.

So, the West’s strategy has included an all-out effort to eradicate poppy production, both by banning the crop and by helping Afghanistan’s impoverished sharecroppers switch to such alternatives as wheat and cotton. Good theory! If it works.

It hasn’t. Many poppy growers didn’t like having their sure cash crop taken away from them, so they moved to a desert region that’s under Taliban control and turns out to be remarkably productive poppy land. Meanwhile, those raising wheat and cotton are producing good crops, but the Western development specialists forgot to focus on the key factor in convincing people to switch: profit. Afghan cotton is not

Bottom line is that more farmers are going into the desert, because, as one put it, “there aren’t any other crops where we can make enough money to fill our children’s stomachs.” Overall poppy production in Afghanistan was up by 7 percent last year and is expected to increase more this year.

Trying to win the hearts and minds of the Afghan people is one thing, but first take care of the children’s stomachs. All those blooming poppies are yet another sign that we don’t know what we’re doing in Afghanistan.

Editor’s note: The following letter was submitted by a Casey Middle School eighth grader as part of a language arts class assignment. It is presented unedited.

I am writing you this letter because I want you to listen to my issue that you have to know about and help us do something better to control this issue.

I argue that drivers should stop using their cell phones while driving, because death numbers and car crashes are increasing a lot each year, and they are also damaging stuff around us.

It is a problem that people text while driving, because it’s very bad for our surroundings and it puts people’s life at risk.

When people are texting, some of them might text because they think the text is important or because their self important.

Also, people texting can cause crashes, deaths, injuries and a lot of damages.

The effects on this issue is that it would cause deaths, and it might increase the number of deaths, crashes, damages and

the number of people going to prison. If people damage stuff outside, that the owners used and cost a lot of money, they are going to pay for the damage that they made. Colorado and other states should make a law that involves using cell phones while driving, if not they should make one to control this issue.

Although, the people that are driving should turn off their cell phones and turn them on when there done driving, or simply they shouldn’t answer. People need to understand that they are risking their lives. Consequently they can kill them self ’s or they might injure them self ’s.

In conclusion, according to a report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, “In September 2009 the (NHTSA) [said] 5,870 people were killed, in 2008 [an] additional 515,000 people were injured due to distracted driving.” Do you want this to keep happening every year and a lot of deaths see LETTERS Page 8

n 1981, when I was a high school junior, a law was passed in the United States that made it illegal for lenders to discriminate according to sex or marital status. The law — called the Equal Credit Opportunity Act — grew out of the fact that women found themselves facing unwarranted rejection when they tried to buy property or automobiles without a father or husband’s signature to go with their own. At the time, single women represented only 11 percent of homeowners, and that was an increase caused by a surge in women’s independence and personal wealth.

That surge was itself caused or deeply influenced by a Supreme Court ruling handed down in 1965, the year after I was born, Griswold v. Connecticut, that gave women free access to the pill and other contraceptives. Women’s reproductive liberty and ability to lead a life of independence and prosperity are inexorably linked.

I hope young women reading this column will reflect on those dates. To someone born in 1990, the years 1965 and 1981 might seem like ancient history, but they are not. These changes took place while their mothers and fathers were young. Thanks to conservative religionists like Rick Santorum, they may be relegated to the past.

The pro-choice community is sometimes guilty of viewing small challenges to a woman’s right to choose abortion as monumental threats, but what is happening right now in America is a monumental threat, not to women’s fertility, but also women’s liberty and independence.

Lawmakers in Oklahoma and Virginia are on the brink of passing “personhood” amendments like the one Colorado voters have twice rejected that would give full rights to fertilized eggs and ban not only abortion, but also the pill, the morning-after pill and certain fertility treatments. One chamber in each of these states has already passed the measure, putting it one vote and one gubernatorial signature away from becoming law and setting the stage for a showdown over Roe v. Wade and Griswold.

At the same time, we have a presidential hopeful who is gaining — yes, gaining — in the polls by saying that states should have the right to outlaw contraception because contraception leads to immorality; who opposes abortion in all instances; and who most

recently said he opposes prenatal testing because it gives parents the option to abort malformed fetuses.

Meanwhile, the U.S. House of Representatives holds hearings about contraception and invites only men.

Although the topic was ostensibly the impact on religious liberty of President Obama’s soon-to-be abandoned mandate that all women have access to contraception, the fact that only men were represented says a great deal about the violently patriarchal nature of fundamentalist religion in the United States.

It’s temping to want to look at recent events and dismiss the attack on women’s reproductive liberty as the death rattle of religious conservativism that is desperately out of touch with even its own constituents. After all, polls show that 58 percent of even Catholic women don’t agree with Santorum about contraception, much less prenatal screening. And more Americans believe abortion should be legal in at least some circumstances than oppose abortion outright. Together with those who are solidly pro-choice, that’s a majority in favor of some protections for abortion.

But it would be a grave mistake to not take the situation seriously.

Although the majority of Americans support a woman’s right to use contraception and even her right to have an abortion under some circumstances, there are plenty of people who care more about getting Obama out of the White House than protecting young women’s reproductive freedom and the improved health and economic vitality that go with it.

Remember what so many of us said in 2004? The battle cry then was, “Anyone but Bush.” Among older conservatives who missed out on the sexual revolution and for whom reproduction is a dried-up memory, the medieval ramblings of Santorum are far more tolerable than another four years of Obama.

When a state house of representatives votes 34 to 8, as Oklahoma’s House did, to outlaw the pill and abortion under all circumstances, it’s time to act.

nd now, the next president of the United States! David Walker!

Huh? Yeah, you know, David

Walker.

The former comptroller general of the United States.

The guy who has been traveling around the country for years saying sensible things about money. That David Walker.

The guy New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman was touting as a latter-day H. Ross Perot and third-party candidate in his column last Sunday.

The guy Politico blogger Alexander Burns says has put out “an intriguing statement” on the anniversary of Ross Perot’s presidential announcement.

That David Walker.

Walker’s “intriguing statement” said Ross Perot ran on four key issues: “fiscal responsibility on the part of both Democrats and Republicans, political dysfunction in Washington, lack of trust in government and declining confidence in the future” — essentially the same issues that are agitating large numbers of voters today.

“Today, we are worse off on all four counts,” the intriguing statement goes on. “Therefore, we need another Ross Perot-style issue campaign to provide the American people with the facts, the truth, the tough choices and some sen-

sible solutions to restore fiscal sanity.”

And might it be possible that David Walker thinks he just might be the next Ross Perot? Intriguingly, the email from Walker to Politico’s Burns that contained Walker’s statement also pointed reporters to Friedman’s column, floating the idea of a third-party candidacy by David Walker.

Equally intriguingly, Burns says Walker’s name has come up in association with a number of centrist and third-party efforts for 2012, including those of an organization called “Americans Elect.”

Like David Walker, Americans Elect is not exactly a household name, but it should be taken seriously. The organization is using the Internet to sign up 5 million or more registered voters (nearly 2.5 million have joined so far), who will then use Internet voting to nominate a presidential ticket, which the group intends to put on the ballot in all 50 states.

The reason Americans Elect should be taken seriously is that as of Feb. 6 it had qualified to have its putative ticket on the ballot in 16 states (including Colorado), with certification pending in two others and ballot access activities under way in 17 more.

In other words, Americans Elect could very well provide the portal for a David Walker or some other non-party candidate to make a serious run at the

White House — in theory.

So what are we to make of all this?

Since the Civil War, all third-party candidates for president have flopped — as Friedman, Burns and Walker all acknowledge. They all argue that the real value of third-party candidacies lies in their shaping of the national political conversation and in bringing forward ideas and policies that are ultimately embraced by the major parties.

But most intriguingly, Messrs.

Friedman, Burns and Walker all neglect to mention the most substantive result of Ross Perot’s 1992 campaign — it made Bill Clinton president.

Early on, the Perot campaign attracted roughly equal numbers of Republicans and Democrats, but by the time November rolled around, a lot more Republicans than Democrats ended up voting for him. Clinton would have lost if Perot hadn’t been on the ballot. It is inconceivable that Friedman, Burns and David Walker don’t all know this.

Which is why I wonder if there might not be a hidden agenda in play here: Run David Walker as a supposedly nonpartisan alternative, use Americans Elect to get him on the ballot in 50 states, and hope he drains off enough Republican votes to elect Obama.

But regardless of whether that’s the game, a Walker run for the Americans Elect nomination involves more than a little wishful thinking — as a quick visit to the Americans Elect website attests.

Organization members have already started nominating candidates, and as of Feb. 19, the candidate with the most support was Ron Paul with 2,314 sup-

porters, followed by John Huntsman with 1,215, Bernie Sanders 913, Barack Obama 768, Michael Bloomberg 527, and Stephen Colbert 421.

David Walker had a thumping 52 supporters.

Which is not to say he couldn’t mount an organized campaign to move up by flooding Americans Elect with new members; any registered voter can sign up and participate.

But lest you think Ron Paul’s numbers are just another example of his mastery of the Internet straw poll, consider a bit of news from Iowa: A Des Moines Register poll of Iowans likely to vote in the general election found that three of the four current Republican candidates would beat President Obama if the election were held today.

The one who does best is Ron Paul, winning by a seven-point margin (49 percent to 42 percent). Santorum wins by four points (48 percent to 44 percent), and Romney by two points (46 percent to 44 percent).

Paul showed “crossover power,” according to the Register.

It may break Thomas Friedman’s heart to say it, but if there is a serious third- or no-party candidate this fall, it’s going to be Ron Paul, not David Walker. And given that Paul’s biggest crossover draws are his anti-war and anti-drug-war stances, he could take as many or more votes from Obama as from the Republican candidate. Now that’s really intriguing.

The tenacity of the oil and gas business is almost impressive. The advent of horizontal fracking engineering has representatives delivering the rhetoric of new jobs and rosy times. The usual smooth-talking suspects are EOG Resources, Halliburton, Anadarko, Noble Energy, Chesapeake and other competitors looking to win land bids and break hearts. If fracking continues as planned, their stealthy tactics and expectant stakeholders will be rewarded with billions of dollars worth of profit.

And that’s just on the Front Range.

Determined to understand how this all works, I did some metaphoric digging. I flipped back through journals from a summer spent touring natural gas drilling sites, meeting with BLM staff, hearing from communities in proximity to platforms and wells, and talking with representatives of Xcel and other buyers.

The process of sticking tentacles into the ground, drawing up gas locked in shale, and getting it to market seems intentionally confusing. There are many parties involved and stops along the way.

This is basically how it works. An operator from a drilling company determines areas of interest. Recently, land in Longmont and in Weld County by Erie’s public schools became very interesting after it was deemed profitable.

Contracts are negotiated, or forced, between the oil company and the landowner. Sometimes a homeowner will own the land and not the minerals underneath, making it justifiable for the company to slip access what’s underground. If a homeowner refuses, the Landmen, the official title of the person knocking on your door, can move forward under a “forced pulling” pretense.

In cases where the BLM has cited possible species extinction warnings, the drilling has happened despite. The rhetoric

of an economy boost trumps health concerns, rights of individuals and the unfortunate habitat placement of plants and animals. I do not think I’m taking liberty in saying this: Historically, when someone has said “no,” the rules change, straight answers fall to the wayside, and the bully on the playground wins.

Here’s an example of a governmental safeguard. The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission monitors spills. For public convenience, if a spill occurs, like the 25 gallons of diesel fuel on the highway of Weld County on Feb. 24, 2011, or the 100 gallons of hydraulic fluid onto the land in Weld County on May 16, 2011, a citizen can file a complaint form. Like spilt milk, it’s wiped up and a report is prepared and posted online with the reassurances of “no further action needed,” “report pending” and “no impact identified.”

Compared to the unfathomable million-year timeline formation of shale — a mineral once a vegetation mud pack in shallow waters — the digging up and shipping off of this controversial commodity seems to be happening with a disconcerting lack of hesitation.

EOG (a drilling company) addresses drilling strategy on their website in a letter to stockholders. “Our explorationists quietly scout different areas and analyze rocks that are amenable to substantial development potential.” No strategies for community health precautions; just a promise of sneaky feet and good eyes.

It leaves me wondering, with wells springing up next to playgrounds, with investors tiptoeing in backyards, can we afford to let fracking be a stealth mission? Can we afford to lie down with the familiar promises and assurances being whispered in our ears? We need to decide what the community response will be to fracking projects, other than filing paper work and stomping our feet.

Withering Colorado River flows pose downstream dilemma

n Colorado, when we think of snow, we often think of skiing.

But for the tens of millions of people who live in the river basin that bears our state’s name, in places like Arizona and California, our snowpack means much more. It means water.

And in recent decades, that water has been dwindling.

The rally held at the state Capitol in Denver this week to protest the Windy Gap Firming Project, which would divert even more water from the upper Colorado River basin to quench the Front Range’s thirsty development, is only a microcosm of a larger question: What can be done to address competing water interests in the basin as a whole, when demand is increasing and supply is on the decline?

It’s a question addressed in the Peter McBride

film Chasing Water, which is showing next week in Boulder (see story, page 11).

Tom Yulsman, co-director of CU-Boulder’s Center for Environmental Journalism, co-authored a two-part article with journalism master’s student Brendon Bosworth called “Running Toward Empty” in early 2011. One of the questions they asked was whether last winter’s heavy snowpack made a dent in reversing the effects of a decade-long drought that has created “bathtub rings” at shrinking Lake Mead and Lake Powell. Their response was, yes, but it was a small dent, and most signs point to the problem getting worse, not better.

“We are taking more water out of the Colorado River basin than actually flows out of the Colorado River basin,” Yulsman tells Boulder Weekly, adding that “savings banks” like Mead and Powell have been

the only thing keeping the lower reaches of the Colorado from drying up even more. (Yulsman and Bosworth note in their article that the city of Las Vegas began drilling for a new intake pipeline at Mead because of worries that water would eventually dip below existing outflow points.)

Scientists debate whether the current drought is a symptom of climate change, or just a naturally occurring dry spell that happens periodically. Either way, its effects are real and demand attention.

“We tend to think, OK, the mountains look snowy, things must be OK,” Yulsman says. “We tend to have a short-term outlook, but we’re talking about a long-term process that takes place over years.”

‘Chasing Water’ tells the tale of the once-mighty Colorado River

n a sense, photographer Pete McBride has been preparing to make Chasing Water all his life.

Raised on a cattle ranch in the Roaring Fork River Valley, he grew up working hay fields irrigated by the snowmelt that carved the Grand Canyon and slaked the thirst of the Southwest.

“I often used to think about water,” he says in the film. “I wondered how much went into our fields and how much returned to the creek.”

Later, as a photographer for National Geographic, Outside and Men’s Journal, McBride traveled to some of the world’s most exotic locales — often, as it happened, shooting stories that related in some way to water.

His 18-minute documentary, judged the Best McBride shot some HD video, and the idea for a Short Mountain Film of the 2011 Banff Film film took hold. Ultimately, though, Chasing Water is essentially an artistic film because of its remarkable beauty and its shockingly personal impact. When McBride as cameraman deplanes, leaving behind lyrical views of the turquoise river meandering through red sandstone to meet up with the kayak-bound Waterman in what McBride calls “the frappuccino pit” in the Delta, it’s like a kick in the gut. The foaming sludge of agricultural effluent and raw sewage, what is now the graveyard of the Colorado River, used to be a braided network of lagoons where birds nested and shrimp hatched. McBride and Waterman had to walk the last 29 miles to the Sea of Cortez in order to complete their mission of following the river’s old course.

Only the remoteness of the Delta has allowed this to happen, McBride said.

“The river stopped reaching the sea in the ’80s,” McBride explained, “but during the spring runoff it would reach it. Not a drop has reached since the late ’90s, but most people don’t know that. And that’s a big issue, I think. Because if the river ended in San Diego they’d freak out. They’d be like, ‘Where’s our river?’”

Boulder Weekly: For those here in Boulder County who may not be intimately familiar with the water management challenges that we’re facing on the Colorado, would you give a quick snapshot of what you’re working on right now?

Jennifer Pitt: From a basinwide perspective, I think there’s been a recent realization that demands on the river for water actually have been exceeding supply. That’s in part caused by the fact that we’ve been in an 11or 12-year drought.

But drought notwithstanding, especially if demands keep rising, we’re at the point where use of the river’s water is unsustainable. Everybody believes that the region will continue to grow, there’s a great quality of life in the mountain West, in the Southwest, and people are attracted to this region for a variety of reasons. And there’s no reason

to think that’s going to stop or that it’s not going to pick up as the economy improves.

That will cause water demands to continue to increase, and there’s a lot of concern that climate change will cause supply to decrease, possibly because of decreased precipitation in the region, but certainly because of increased temperatures that will increase evaporation rates and demands for water.

BW: So it’s kind of like a perfect storm where supply is dwindling and demand is increasing.

JP: Exactly. So that’s the essence of the challenge. Every institution and agency that is a stakeholder in the river and the river’s water is concerned about it. From the environmental perspective, we are concerned that because there is no inherent right to water for the river itself, and because of historically how the river has been managed

— where the environment usually gets last dibs — if we are not proactive, there will be bad outcomes for the river. We have the first look at that kind of outcome in the delta of the Colorado River down at the U.S./ Mexico border.

BW: There’s no water reaching the sea, is there?

JP: That’s correct, and it’s been that way for more than a decade now, and when the news came out a few years ago that supply on the river was not keeping up with demand, those of us who have been working on trying to restore flows to the delta of the Colorado River were not surprised, we

knew that already, and that’s because we knew there was no water reaching the sea. …

BW: You’ve written about water management and removing barriers to water trading and transferring. Can you talk about what that entails and how difficult that is?

which is “water flows uphill to money.”

With that said, it is fair to anticipate the day, sometime in the future, when urban conservation does not supply enough water to meet the growing demands of the urban areas of the Southwest. So we’d like to see some ability for water-sharing, basically between agricultural users, which have the vast majority of water rights on the river. We don’t want to see agriculture go out of business by any stretch, by any means. Agriculture is an essential part of the region’s economy, and there’s a lot to be said for our local food supplies, and for the environmental benefits that agriculture supplies and for the quality-of-life benefits that agriculture supplies.

We don’t want to see that disappear, but we do believe that there are ways that agriculture might be able to share water, particularly in dry times, and provide for some of those urban needs.

And the reason why this is important is that at this moment, when we’ve realized that demands on the river exceed supply, if you don’t allow for transfers, what you’re ultimately doing when you

take a new increment of water out of the river is you’re causing a shortage somewhere else.

If you think of it as one big bucket, with a lot of straws, if we’re already using everything that gets poured into the bucket, then the new straw that gets put in is inevitably creating a shortage somewhere else. So we think we need more attention to how transfers can be done well to optimize benefits across sectors.

BW: This may require a complex answer, but what are the keys to the solution to this challenge?

JP: Water conservation in all sectors. I think there are opportunities for conservation by urban municipalities down to the retail level, consumer level. And I also think there are opportunities for water conservation on the agricultural side, and there are certainly opportunities for conservation in system efficiency, in our water distribution networks, which are often aging infrastructure.

And we probably need more investment there to increase efficiency, which doesn’t really save you water —

although certainly for exports from the basin it does. New flexibilities in water sharing, for the right deals, are going to help, and probably increased awareness by everybody that lives in this region that we live in an arid part of the country and we should be living lives that respect that if we want to maintain our quality of life.

BW: What advice would you give to people living in Boulder County or in Colorado in general if they want to get involved and make a difference?

JP: Every river needs a friend. If we want the rivers of the Colorado River basin to continue to be healthy, and to provide us with the recreational benefits and the wildlife benefits and all the things we love rivers for, if we want those to persist, what will keep that for us and our children and grandchildren is paying attention to what happens there. … There isn’t a group called the Friends of the Colorado, but there are a lot of environmental organizations working to make sure we have plenty of water not only for our communities but also for the river itself.

And when I say that, I mean that very deliberately. We’re not trying to shut down water use by our society’s traditional water users. We want healthy communities in this region, but we believe that can be done in a way that allows us to have healthy rivers in our watershed.

Learn where your water comes from. … I’ve heard it said that the history of the West is written in water, and our question is, how does that story end? We live in a place that is water-short, and yet a lot of us don’t pay very much attention to it. It’s probably the lowest utility bill we get at home, and we’re very lucky to be able to take advantage of a fabulous quality of life in one of the most beautiful states in the nation. And I think the importance of you doing a story like this is to remind people you can’t take that for granted.

If you want thriving communities and a wonderful environment in which you can go and recreate, we need to make conscious decisions to make sure we keep all of that.

A decision 40 years ago has come back to haunt Boulder taxpayers

hen the city of Boulder buried radium-contaminated soil years ago at Allied Chemical’s Valmont Butte mill site, it carried serious ramifications.

Ramifications that continue to haunt the site.

Now, the 102-acre property is owned by the City of Boulder, which purchased the land and closed-down mill in 2000.

But the city’s connection to the contamination on the property, and at least some of its responsibility for the site’s ultimate cleanup costs, goes back more than 40 years — long before that questionable real estate deal.

In October 1971, the Housing Authority of the City of Boulder (predecessor to Boulder Housing Partners) began breaking ground on a vacant lot at Third and Pearl streets to build a 34-unit, low-income housing complex.

The lot had previously been the location of the old city yards, used primarily to park city vehicles and store other maintenance materials. According to a 12-page summary report filed with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE), a resident living in the area saw the excavation getting under way and notified the Housing Authority that “a tungsten-radium mill had been in operation at the Third and Pearl site in 1918 and that the area might be radioactive.”

This notification by a concerned citizen, whom later reports would identify as a former employee of the mill, seems to be the first clue that something was wrong at the construction site. It appears city officials may not have considered how the location had been used prior to purchasing the land near the mouth of Boulder Canyon and establishing the city yard and, later, the housing project.

In that sense, the Third and Pearl site seems to have something in common with Boulder’s more recent acquisition of the Valmont Butte location. In both instances, the municipality seems to have bypassed — or disregarded — a thorough search of public records prior to spending taxpayer money to purchase seriously contaminated properties that subsequently required substantial dollars to remediate.

Had such a search been conducted on the Third and Pearl site, the city would have discovered that it was the former location of a radium mill. In fact, had the records been carefully examined, the city would likely have discovered that there were a total of 13 closely clustered locations that had all been either tungsten or radium mills, or areas where radioactive soil was dumped as a result of milling operations. The area containing the contaminated locations is bor-

dered by Pearl Street on the north, Ninth Street on the east, Arapahoe Avenue on the south and the first quarter mile of Boulder Canyon to the west.

These sites were part of a total of 40 radium-contaminated locations in Colorado eventually identified by the CDPHE and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the late 1970s.

In media accounts from that time, Al Hazle — who was head of the state health department’s division of radiation and hazardous wastes — said that, “due to a lack of funding, only one site had been cleaned up.” Presumably that “one site” was Third and Pearl. Hazle also estimated that clean-up of all of the radium sites could cost as much as $25 million — money that, depending on who you asked, the state didn’t have or See VALMONT Page 15

was at least unwilling to allocate for such a purpose.

As a result of this perpetual lack of funding, it appears that much of the contamination at the 13 sites, with the exception of Third and Pearl, has been left in place and in some instances covered with clean fill dirt. The best documented of these remaining sites is the radium-contaminated area along the bike path near Boulder Creek between the children’s fishing pond east of the Justice Center and the sculpture park farther to the east.

In 1983, what was then known as the Colorado Department of Health (CDH) recommended that the contaminated soil in “hot spots” along the path be removed from the area. However, it appears that instead of removal, contamination was simply covered in place by clean fill dirt. At the time, it was considered a temporary measure until a longterm solution — and hopefully more money — could be found. It is unclear if any further clean up was ever done.

The remediation of those sites — or lack thereof — is a story for another day.

As for what transpired at Third and Pearl in 1971, after the city had been notified that its low-income housing site was radioactive, a member of the CDH was quickly dispatched to measure radiation levels on Oct. 4 of that year. While most of the radioactive materials were considered moderate to low-level, according to media accounts at the time, some were found to be as high as 20,000 times background levels. As a result, the Boulder City/County Health Department (BCCHD) — now Boulder County Public Health — issued a ceaseand-desist order, prohibiting further construction activity on the site until a clean-up plan was in place for the contaminated areas. After emergency meetings that included the city, the CDH and BCCHD, among others, officials decided that the most highly contaminated material would be placed in 55-gallon drums and shipped to a licensed radioactive disposal facility in Nevada operated by Nuclear Engineering Inc. They determined that the low-level contaminated soil would be sent to Allied’s Valmont Butte site, where it would be buried somewhere on the property.

In order to accept the city’s radium contamination, Allied had to request an amendment to its radioactive materials license, which was already in place as a requirement for storing its radioactive tailings in the 17-acre primary tailings pond at the site. The amendment was issued by the CDH on Oct. 22, and the first truckloads of radium-tainted soil arrived at the butte four days later.

ty. The original plan called for the contaminated soil to be buried in a 90-foot ditch. However, by Nov. 3, the 90-foot ditch was full, and the trucks were still coming. According to the 12-page report from the CDPHE, “Due to the overwhelming amount of soil thus far removed, it was necessary, at Allied’s request, to dig a second pit for soil disposal. This was done by the Fagre Construction Company.”

By the end of the Third and Pearl remediation on Nov. 11, between 150 and 200 truckloads of radium-contaminated soil had been buried in at least two pits on Allied’s Valmont Butte property. This equates to approximately 1,500 to 2,000 cubic yards of radium-tainted soil. Third and Pearl was, for the most part, now a clean site. But the problem with its transplanted contamination was just beginning.

As pointed out in Part 3 of The Ghosts of Valmont Butte series, since the Superfund laws were enacted in 1980, the EPA has used four criteria to determine who has to pay for remediation costs at a contaminated site. The short version is this: If you authorized moving contaminated material to the site, if you transported contaminated material to the site, if any of the material at the site is attributable to you, or if you are the owner of the site, you can be named as a potentially responsible party (PRP). Even if a PRP only qualifies for one of the four criteria, that party can still be held financially responsible for the entire costs of cleaning up a site. It then falls to the PRP to sue other parties that may also be responsible for contaminating the site to help with clean-up costs.

As a result, the decision by the city to move the Third and Pearl contamination to Allied’s Valmont Butte site some 40 years ago most likely sealed its fate as a party responsible for at least some of the eventual remediation costs, down the line. And if Third and Pearl weren’t enough to guarantee it would be laying out taxpayer money to clean up the butte someday, the city decided to double down and became the sole owner of the contaminated property in 2000. As a result, taxpayers are already into the property for more than $5 million dollars, and that number could soar higher as the full extent of the actual contamination becomes more clear.

The City of Boulder purchased the property in 2000 for more than $2.5 million, and has subsequently committed another $2.5 million to the site’s initial cleanup plan. The previous owner of the property shelled out just $700,000 for the parcel in 1994. In other words, the city paid nearly three and a half times more than the previous owner for the contaminated property, just six years later, and it didn’t even bother to get an see VALMONT Page 16

appraisal for the property at the time.

Had the city gotten an appraisal, it likely would have discovered that the potential liability for the contamination exceeded the value of the land.

The $2.5 million in clean-up costs that has been committed to the butte thus far is primarily for the Voluntary Cleanup Plan (VCUP), which has been approved by the CDPHE. The plan calls for moving earth at the butte this month. As part of the VCUP, the city and its clean-up partner Honeywell — which inherited Allied’s responsibility at the site when it purchased the company — are scheduled to move much of the contamination currently scattered across the property into the 17-acre primary tailings pond before capping it.

The city’s property has a variety of contamination, including lead, the Third and Pearl radium soils, radioactive hotspots and contamination from a secondary tailings pond that is to be transferred into the primary tailings pond, which already contains approximately 427,000 tons of radioactive tailings that includes heavy metals such as lead and arsenic (see map on page 14).

Once everything has been moved into the primary tailings pond, the city and Honeywell intend to construct a dirt cap on the pond and then cover the dirt with rocks approximately eight inches in size. The rocks are intended to keep prairie dogs from burrowing into the contamination below the soil cap and releasing lead and radioactivity as air-borne hazards, which has happened repeatedly in the past. The project is estimated to cost $5 million, which will, at least for now, be split by the city and Honeywell.

But the EPA has recommended a cap that is also capable of lessening the potential threats associated with water, a cap that would help prevent surface water and rain from soaking into the contaminated tailings below and pooling in the primary tailings pond. The EPA’s 2005 reassessment of the site has already determined that such pooling of subsurface water is already occurring in the pond. The cap that Honeywell and the city intend to build over the primary tailings pond is not such a water-resistant cap, which would cost more to construct. The issue of the cap is important, as it plays directly into the Third and Pearl soils situation.

As previously reported in this series, there is considerable debate as to where exactly the city’s Third and Pearl radium-contaminated soil was buried in 1971. Three different locations have been identified in the public record and by persons familiar with the Allied site.

But after researching the site for more than two months, Boulder Weekly’s investigation has come to a different conclusion. We believe that there is strong evidence that a fourth location that we have

identified may well be the actual location. For the purposes of this article we will refer to these differing supposed radium disposal locations as the city pit, the Valmont Butte Corporation (VBC) pit, the EPA pit, and the Boulder Weekly pit.

The EPA pit is identified in the agency’s 2005 reassessment of the Allied site.

The report even shows radioactive readings (Albeit near background levels) taken at this location by the EPA’s contractor.

The general area of the EPA’s supposed pit location received some confirmation recently during an interview between Boulder Weekly and Tom Hendricks. Hendricks is likely more familiar with the Allied property than any other living person. He first came to the mill to apply for a job as a college student in 1969. He didn’t get the job, but later, in 1977, he would convert Allied’s fluorspar floatation mill into a mill capable of crushing his own gold ore from the Cross Mine in Caribou. By this time, the mill had been sold to a company called Tusco, which leased the mill to Hendricks.

Hendricks may have come somewhat late in the mill’s long history, but his friend and mentor, Al McGowan, had been there from the beginning.

McGowan worked at the mill when it was first established as a gold operation by St. Joe Mining Company, in 1935. He later became the mill’s general superintendent for Allied Chemical. By the time Allied shut down its operations in the 1970s, McGowan had started his own ore-testing company, which he moved to the Allied site, where he was given free work space. It was McGowan who showed Hendricks how to convert the mill from a fluorspar operation to a gold mill. And it was primarily McGowan — along with other former Allied mill employees who had gone to work for Hendricks — who informed him about the long history of the site, including its history of contamination.

In the Boulder Weekly interview, Hendricks looked at a map of the site where he had spent almost every day for 15 years, and examined the various locations that others were claiming to be the burial site for the Third and Pearl soils.

Hendricks pointed to the EPA’s disposal location on the map and said it was “just about right.” Hendricks is about as close as it comes to an eyewitness after 40 years.

As for the Valmont Butte Corporation pit, the description of this supposed resting place for the Third and Pearl soils comes from a document titled “Valmont Butte Corporation Environmental Report,” dated Oct. 10, 1996. While it is unclear from the description where exactly the corporation is claiming the pit is located, it is clear that it is not at any of the other proposed sites.

The corporation’s environmental report states, “We have also covered the area where the city of Boulder buried the waste from the 3rd and Pearl site with approximately 25 feet of clean fill dirt, by extending the upper level out and over the disposal site.”

If this claim is to be believed, then the pit would have to be located under the front edge of the existing 20- to 25-foot slope that runs between the EPA pit and the city pit. It should be pointed out that Valmont Butte Corporation’s environmental report appears to have been prepared for the purpose of convincing the CDPHE that the state should terminate the company’s required hazardous materials license, which was at the time required to be attached to the property as long as the hazardous tailings and the Third and Pearl soils were stored at the site.

Eventually, the state terminated that license, clearing the way for the Valmont Butte Corporation to sell the land to the city of Boulder for roughly three and half times what it had paid for the parcel just a few years earlier. But it is clear that many of the claims put forth by Valmont Butte Corporation in gaining that license termination have subsequently been proven to be wrong.

According to Bill Boyes, the city’s facilities maintenance program manager, and Joe Castro, director of facilities and fleet management — the two city officials spearheading the clean-up efforts at the butte property — the location of the city pit was chosen for a number of reasons. There are several documents filed in various health departments that seem to indicate that the disposal pit was near the western edge of the primary tailings pond. And, in the best piece of evidence to date, city officials point to an aerial photo taken in 1971 that seems to show some type of ditch activity taking place directly in front of the western end of the tailing pond (see 1971 aerial photo on page 14).

Giving the photo even more credence, it was, according to Colorado Aerial Photo Service, taken on Nov. 14, 1971. That date, according to the 12-page CDPHE summary report, would have put the photo being snapped exactly in the span of time when the Third and Pearl radium-contaminated soil was being buried at the Allied site.

Very strong evidence indeed.

Based on the above evidence, the city and Honeywell believe that they have found a very convenient and cost-effective way to deal with the radium soil problem. Instead of having to dig up at least 150 dump-trucks worth of contaminated soil and move it into the primary tailings pond before capping the pond, they have simply planned within the see VALMONT Page 17

VCUP to extend the cap to the west to incorporate the site where the city thinks the radium is located.

On Feb. 22, Castro told Boulder Weekly that Boulder officials believe the radium pit is within the trapezoidal area (see map on page 14) designated as the area to be capped, labeled as the primary tailings pond. He further said city officials don’t believe that the EPA and Hendricks are correct in their assessment of the pit’s location.

City officials have told Boulder Weekly that they have never actually dug down into the city pit and taken appropriate radiation measurements that would once and for all determine if the radium is actually located in that site.

The location of the Boulder Weekly pit is based on much of the same evidence the City of Boulder used to choose the location of the city pit. A crudely produced hand-drawn map created in 1976 (see map on page 14) by persons sent to take a reading from the actual disposal pit illustrates the location.

We believe that the aerial photo taken in 1971 does capture the Third and Pearl radium-contaminated soil being buried. However, we also believe, based on this photographic evidence, that the city has incorrectly identified the location of the radium contamination pit. In fact, the entire primary tailings pond cap being proposed in the VCUP only covers a portion of the area actually covered by the primary tailings pond, shown in the 1971 photo as the area under water. Other aerial photos from different years likewise show that, at one time, the tailings pond extended considerably farther to the west than where the proposed VCUP cap is going to be placed. While Boulder Weekly and the city are relying on the same aerial photo, we believe the city misinterpreted how far west the pond stretched.

Based on the photographic evidence, we have created a map of the Valmont Butte site showing the area that in 1971 was covered by the tailings pond waters, as well as overlaying the outline of the city’s VCUP primary tailings pond cap area (see map on page 14).

By using fixed points in the aerial photo that have not changed over time, such as the northeastern corner of the Valmont Cemetery and the road near its corner, the western end of the primary tailings pond dike dam and other definable areas of the dike that are in the same location today, Boulder Weekly was able to identify the site.

We should point out that the highresolution photo we aquired from Colorado Aerial Photo Service shows a fairly significant area being worked. It shows the Boulder Weekly pit area, but it also looks like another pit may be in the area of the EPA pit. In this photo, the city pit would be considerably to the Boulder Weekly

east and under water. The photo offers strong evidence, but only additional digging and testing will find the two or more pits containing the Third and Pearl radium.

This is crucial, because as of now, despite the controversy over where the Third and Pearl radium-contaminated soils are actually buried at Valmont Butte, it is the city and Honeywell’s intention to proceed as early as this month with construction of the primary tailings pond cap as the final remediation of the Third and Pearl soils. But what if they are wrong as we and the

EPA believe?

One thing is for sure: The city’s current solution is definitely the cheapest solution, far less expensive than having to find and relocate at least 150 dumptruck loads of radioactive soil into the primary tailings pond.

But cheapest isn’t always the best when it comes to radioactive contamination.

It seems incomprehensible that neither the city nor Honeywell are willing to spend the money necessary to confirm that their supposed location of the radium is the real location, and that the rest of us are wrong.

Is this guesswork-type handling of the Third and Pearl radium-contaminated soil indicative of the quality we should expect for the entire upcoming Valmont Butte cleanup?

Unfortunately, as serious as it may seem, the Third and Pearl radium problem may actually pale in comparison to other, yet undisclosed contamination problems at the butte. Those ghosts will be making their appearance in the near future, as our series continues.

András Schiff’s piano recitals are daring in their scope

ery few pianists follow a full recital program with a 20-minute encore.

Very few, as in one: András Schiff, the Hungarian pianist who comes to Macky Auditorium as part of the University of Colorado’s CU Presents series at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27.

Last fall Schiff, esteemed equally for uncompromising musical integrity and an unwavering sense of social responsibility, played the same challenging program that he brings to Boulder in New York’s legendary Carnegie Hall. And for an encore, rather than a showy bagatelle, he sat down and played a complete Beethoven piano sonata, Op. 109 in E major.

Schiff was rewarded for his taxing audacity with an unusually glowing New York Times review.

“Master is a term applied too loosely in classical music,” wrote Anthony Tommasini. “But somehow you know one when you hear one, as was clear on Monday night when the pianist András Schiff played a recital before a full house of rapt listeners at Carnegie Hall.”

Tommasini went on to single out the encore as “the most affecting demonstration of mastery,” and then to ask, “How did he have the focus and sheer energy for such an eloquent, calmly authoritative performance of the sonata after his demanding program?”

Apparently, it’s all part of being András Schiff: taking on daunting tasks has become an almost routine part of his career. Most pianists find playing all 32 Beethoven piano sonatas once a major undertaking; Schiff played the full cycle 20 times from 2004 to 2009. Cycles of works by one or two composers would

fill most performers’ repertoires; Schiff has undertaken cycles of major works by Bach (a particular specialty), Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Chopin and his fellow-countryman, Bartók.

Reviews show that Schiff manages such marathon tasks with no sacrifice of quality.

“Schiff stands with perhaps only a handful of pianists in his total achievement,“ wrote a critic for the Philadelphia Inquirer, while a New York Times critic observed that “There is nothing more reliable in the world of classical music today than pianist András Schiff playing Bach.”

January 2011 he wrote a letter to the Washington Post deploring the political environment in his native Hungary.

“The latest news is indeed alarming,” he wrote.

“Tolerance levels are extremely low. Racism, discrimination against the Roma, antisemitism, xenophobia, chauvinism and reactionary nationalism — these symptoms are deeply worrying. They evoke memories that we have hoped were long forgotten.”

This was no empty gesture. Schiff was subjected to threats — including one posted online to cut off his hands — and he now doubts that he will return to Hungary anytime soon. “It’s not that I’m afraid,” he has said in the past, “but I don’t want to take the risk.”

The program Schiff brings to Boulder is highly individual, intriguingly mixed and filled with challenges of different orders. Long known for his Bach performances, Schiff starts with the 15 Three-Part Inventions.

Originally composed as teaching exercises, the inventions are not customary recital fare. Fifteen short three-part contrapuntal studies do not lend themselves to being played as a set. Performed that way, they challenge the performer to find the individual mood of each piece and make them all as interesting and expressive as possible.

After this restrained, almost academic opening, Schiff turns to one of the most brutal and explosive pieces in the repertoire, Bartók’s fiendishly difficult Piano Sonata. Raised in Hungary and trained at the Liszt Academy in Budapest, Schiff is on his home territory here, but that does not help him conquer the technical difficulties of the piece.

The program closes with a test of another kind: the “Diabelli” Variations of Beethoven. The score is based on a rather dull waltz tune by Viennese publisher Anton Diabelli, who requested a variation from major and minor Austrian composers; the set was intended to promote his publishing business.

Contributing to the project with a single variation each were, along with others long forgotten, Franz Schubert, Carl Czerny (remembered for his many volumes of piano studies), and the 7-year-old Franz Lizst. But Beethoven, who literally could not take up a musical idea without exhausting its possibilities, provided not one, but 33 variations. The result is a multihued garden of delights for the listeners — and obstacles for the performer.

The variations range from charming to humorous to beautiful to virtuosic, and everything in between.

The challenge to the pianist is to bring out the character of each variation while simultaneously keeping the shape of the set as a whole.

Altogether, it adds up to a daunting program, and Schiff is one of the very few pianists in the world who could undertake it.

Walking into the Stage Theatre is like walking into a pro ballpark. The energy crackles in a way that it simply doesn’t in many smaller venues, and audience expectations are understandably higher than they would be at a “minor league” performance.

For 33 years and under the leadership of only three men, the Denver Center Theatre Company has produced some of the most consistently thrilling, challenging and fulfilling theatre in the Rocky Mountain region. The DCTC continues its tradition of excellence with Shakespeare’s anachronistic but immortal The Taming of the Shrew.

David M. Barber’s scenic design sets an ebullient tone the moment one steps inside the theatre. An outsized map of the United States featuring Italian stand-ins for the cities and towns dominates the rear of the stage. It, along with the advertisements that flank the stage, is done in a retro style perfectly evocative of the 1950s setting and vibe Director Kent Thompson chose for this production.

Thompson’s choice to set this Shrew in the ’50s is genius. Those young enough to not remember a time before the Internet — let alone a time before color television — may not realize that sexual politics and the nature of marriage differed drastically just those few decades ago. A man’s home truly was his castle, and a wife’s place was — to a much wider degree than today — inside it. It was a time when nobody batted an eyelash when Ralph Kramden regularly threatened

two daughters, the fair Bianca (Christy McIntosh) and the foul Katherine (Kathleen McCall), reside in Padua — Chicago here, as evidenced by Gremio’s (Randy Moore) Midwestern drawl.

Joining the fray are Petruchio ( John G. Preston) and his servant Grumio (Andrew Schwartz), who arrive from Verona (aka Dallas) and are the steer hornadorned Cadillac equivalents of their guido brethren.

The young, attractive and vacuous Bianca is the prize sought by Lucentio, Gremio and Hortensio ( JohnMichael Marrs doing a fabulous Elvis impersonation for a time).

Baptista has proclaimed that Bianca shall not marry until Katherine — known more regularly as Kate — finds a husband.

For a handsome fee from the three suitors and the hope of a large dowry from Baptista, Petruchio takes up the challenge of taming the shrewish Kate.

Though common in the original time of the play — and, to a lesser degree, in the 1950s — Petruchio’s approach to breaking Kate’s spirits and Kate’s eventual submission are the apex of political incorrectness today.

Many versions of The Taming of the Shrew attempt thematic aikido by turning Kate’s “evolution” from harridan to happy homemaker into a pseudo-feminist triumph. That approach fails more often than it succeeds, so Thompson’s decision to eschew it is quite welcome.

Everything about The Denver Center Theatre Company’s Shrew is excellently done. The Taming of the Shrew is a theatrical grand slam.

The culturally ingrained sexism of the Eisenhower era echoes the phallocentric world of the play and thereby makes the play’s misogyny somewhat less unpalatable. More than that, however, Thompson uses the setting to great comic effect by pointing up the regional differences that have largely faded away since the advent of inexpensive air travel, the 24-hour news cycle and the foreshortening of the online universe.

Lucentio (Drew Cortese) and his servant Tranio (Matt Zambrano) hail from Pisa, which is New York City in this Shrew, and they ooze so many East Coast Italian stereotypes that one feels they’d be just as at home working for Tony Soprano as courting Baptista Minola’s daughter. Baptista (Robert Sicular) and his

house.

“In the gallery it looks good, but it wasn’t that compelling,” Stephen says.

In the bedroom, “the lighting, it just changes the piece altogether.”

That’s a bit of a metaphor for taking Asian art out of Asia — the pieces change. They both look surprisingly comfortable in their new setting, and they need a little bit of interpretation to understand them. It’s been Stephen’s goal to provide the education and exposure. After eight years of working in the art business, running galleries around Southeast Asia, China

and the Middle East, she’s decided to open a gallery in the United States, and has targeted Boulder’s Pearl Street for a new location. But it’s been a bit of a struggle. She’s had two temporary locations and a near miss for a lease on a permanent space.

This weekend, she’ll just skip the formalities and have clients over to her house for a meal she’ll prepare and a chance to peek in on that Antara painting in a fresh setting.

with these artists and has been nurturing her connections and their work for the duration of her career — which started in marketing and with the expectation she’d work with language, not paintings. Then she began to get to know the artists.

“Most of the things I’ve learned, I’ve learned through the artists themselves,” she says.

Her appreciation for the artwork grew through learning the artists’ stories. Many of them come from countries with tumultuous histories, were born into situations like Vietnam during the Vietnam War, and have labored through decades of limited expression.

“So when they do express, it’s very rich,” Stephen says. “Each stroke is not just oil on canvas. It’s an accumulation of history.”

It’s also the first whiffs of changes coming into these countries — and here’s where the education comes into play. Knowing, for example, that smoking is taboo for women in Asia makes Liu Baojun’s painterly images of fullfigured Chinese women with long pipes, blissfully exhaling smoke while draping their curvaceous limbs over the furniture, pearly cleavage nearly bursting out, all the more provocative.

“I love the way they’re so unapologetic,” Stephen says. “Not just Chinese women but all Asian women are taught to behave a certain way, meant to be demur. What Baojun does is show the reversal of these norms. They’re voluptuous, sensual. They’re smoking their opium pipes in a way that says, really, ‘I don’t give a fuck.’”

They’re stunning even without a translation.

And Stephen says business has been good, even since the doors closed on her last physical gallery space, the former Ku Cha Tea House location on 13th Street, on Dec. 24. Before that, she had an exhibit at 915 Pearl St. in October. She had a tentative deal lined up for a split-use space on Pearl Street and might have opened doors this month, but it fell through.

“I don’t think I’m fazed by the challenges,” she says. “Not to have the space is actually a good challenge to have. It means that the market is doing well.”

But selling out of her home isn’t a permanent solution.

“It’s just impossible to run the kind of scale which I want to run,” she says.

A gallery space in a pedestrianheavy zone will let people come in and learn a little bit about the art, even if they’re not buying a painting to take home.

coming into a gallery and buying art.

It’s supposed to be a whole experience,” Stephen says. “You build relationships with everyone who walks into the gallery. … It’s not just offering a product.”

Eventually, she’d like to host educational events with artists, lectures and workshops, and host solo exhibits from some of the popular Asian artists. She also aims to acquire some of the higherrisk pieces from Asian artists, like pieces by Chen Wenling, the Chinese sculptor whose politically charged works include “What You See Might Not Be Real,” which depicts the Wall Street bull smashing Bernie Madoff against a wall. Ten years ago, his works sold for $8,000. Now, just to display them, a gallery has to purchase the paintings, and they sell now for more like $38,000.

Does Boulder have the market for that? Stephen says she wasn’t originally sure, but has been persuaded. One of the Vietnamese artists she’s working with, Pham Thanh Van, paints impressionistic landscapes with a single color field — all yellow, all blue, all green skies and bodies of water surrounding trees laid in with thick swipes of paint that dwarf the neighboring small redroofed houses. Her work has been so popular that her paintings, which sell for thousands of dollars, have been tough to keep on the gallery walls.

With a gallery space, Stephen says, she could organize a solo exhibit of Thanh Van’s work.

“Our hope is to have a space where people will come in and leave understanding a little more,” Stephen says.

“This is a passion, not a business.”

endrik Coetzee was not a man easily dominated. After he led the first expedition from the source of the Nile in Uganda to the Mediterranean — a 4,100mile trip he undertook in 2004 to show the humanitarian situation in that part of the world — some people griped that he hadn’t started at the true source of the storied river. The next year he traveled the extra 465 miles from Kagera to Lake Victoria to silence his critics.

Coetzee, nicknamed Kadoma, also kayaked solo down Murchison Falls on the Nile, which looks like Jaws on a river, a feat so daunting that pro kayakers-turned-filmmakers Ben Stookesberry of Mt. Shasta, Calif., and Chris Korbulic of Rogue River, Ore., didn’t even consider it. With Coetzee as their guide, they were set on

ompared to so much American animation, which seems hell-bent on putting a global audience of addled kids in a paradoxical manic stupor, the work of Japan’s Studio Ghibli sets its own pace, establishes its own, meticulously observed realms of the fantastic and respects a moviegoer’s senses — any moviegoer’s, of any age.

The Secret World of Arrietty is the latest import from the collective responsible for Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle (a clear inspiration for Disney-Pixar’s Up) and, more recently, Ponyo. A big success in Japan and elsewhere, Arrietty opens this week in a slightly Americanized edition overseen and released by Disney. It’s lovely, both in spirit and in its simple, supple, hand-drawn visual allure.

The story comes from Mary Norton’s book The Borrowers (in Japan, the film was titled The Borrower Arrietty), so if you or your child happened to read one or more of the Borrowers books, there’s another access point for you. Arrietty, 14 and ready to bloom, lives under the floorboards of a house with her equally Boulder Weekly

attempting the first kayaking expedition down the Lukuga River in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a feat documented in their film Kadoma and reported in Outside magazine in 2011.

The trip is fraught with difficulties of a bureaucratic nature and the danger posed by armed guerrilla

factions waging a nasty civil war. Still, the three encounter the welcoming generosity of villagers in locations so remote the nearest telephone is 80 miles away.

One hundred miles into their 120-mile journey down the Lukuga, tragedy strikes the trio. Maybe the most haunting thing about it is how it comes at midday, amid surreal calm that swallows up disaster as if it had never even existed.

Kadoma (NR; 42 min.) screens Tuesday at the Boulder Theater as part of the Banff Mountain Film Festival. Proceeds will benefit the CU Outdoor Program and Boulder Mountainbike Alliance. This is a warm, comforting breeze of a picture.

While dodging the odd house cat, they “borrow” what they need to survive from their unwitting, fullsize human hosts: a sugar cube here, a knickknack there.

When a visiting full-scale human teenager discovers Arrietty, the wee family’s safety is threatened, and the fullsize cranky housekeeper’s suspicions become well and truly roused. But this tale of friendship, and of responsible, imaginative recycling of the earth’s material goods, is a warm, comforting breeze of a picture.

The perils remain ever-present in Arrietty’s world, and her family’s plight echoes once and future refugees the world over. But the narrative breathes; it doesn’t conspire every minute to work on an audi-

ence’s nerves or its sense of narrative dread.

Three years ago, Disney’s American release of Ponyo didn’t find the audience it deserved. The Secret World of Arrietty is even more deserving of an audience, though its voice casting neither helps nor hinders those chances. Disney TV star Bridgit Mendler brings an effective if limited friendliness to Arrietty; Will Arnett and Amy Poehler are relatively restrained as her parents; Carol Burnett runs through a career’s worth of vocal flourishes and aural panic attacks as the housekeeper. Disney can be thanked for leaving firsttime director Hiromasa Yonebayashi’s feature more or less alone. (The script is by the great Hayao Miyazaki, co-founder of Studio Ghibli and an inspiration to countless animators and directors.) Will its easygoing charm be enough for the average American preteen consumer, already flattened by one too many Ice Ages?

There’s only one way to find out.

s the camera pans away from the glare of the rising sun, jagged white and blue ice peaks fill the screen. In the middle distance, the tallest catches the first pink light of dawn. In the foreground we see a climber encased in his red down survival spacesuit. He is walking very, very slowly, inching up a steep knife-edge ridge toward us. As the scene shifts to slow motion, we can see that he is stumbling.

Watching that scene from the film Cold at the Banff Mountain Film Festival in November, I was almost choking with dread. Ten minutes into the film, I had already come to care about this climber and his two partners, who, alone in the world’s highest wilderness, were trying to do one of the most difficult things any human has done. Their quest had become an epic metaphor, and the man at the center of the story was my new hero (or antihero).

Cold, Grand Prize winner at the Banff Mountain Film Festival, which arrives in Boulder next week, documents an expedition on Gasherbrum II in the Pakistani Himalayas, the first successful winter ascent of an 8,000-meter (26,246-foot) mountain by an American.

It succeeds as an adventure flick, and more so as a powerfully moving self-portrait of the young Boulderbased climber and photographer Cory Richards, who shot the film, which was brilliantly directed and edited

by Anson Fogel, who lives in Carbondale.

Marshalling a combination of artistic courage and cheerful, fuck-all belligerence, these two men, along with writer Kelly Cordes, have created an astonishing 20-minute masterpiece that has been wowing audiences and sweeping festivals all winter long.

Cold brings the adventure documentary into new territory that seems perfectly suited to its two subjects: elite alpinism and the soul of a mountaineer. Just as the new breed of pure alpinists scorn the armies of porters and the boatloads of gear that characterize modern “siege” mountaineering (shunning even supplemental oxygen), Cold steers clear of the macho glamour that too often surrounds the adventure sports

over a stunning soundtrack by Academy Award-winning composer Gustavo Santaolalla (Babel, Brokeback Mountain).

“I love the mountains. Grew up in them, climbing with my dad. He gave me this. But I was such a fuck-up. Until climbing.

As the days tick by and the men climb, the temperature drops into the low minus-40s. When they summit, Moro is curled in a ball, coughing and puking into the snow. And the real ordeal hasn’t yet begun.

Inside mountaineering

Beauty and Terror Talking about their film in a cafe at the stunning Banff Centre the afternoon before the film was awarded the Grand Prize, Richards and Fogel seemed to be still struggling to understand this thing they had created together.

Cold’s triumphant screening at Banff occurred fewer than nine months after the expedition it documents. Its creation was apparently a flurry of networking and partying followed by a creative marathon.

It began with an email from a friend. While still in Pakistan, Richards had uploaded some raw footage to a blog maintained by The North Face, the expedition’s sponsor. That could very well have been the end of it; Richards was there primarily as a still photographer to document the expedition, and the video footage was bonus. But the posts blew up — drawing upwards of 30,000 views. Julie Kennedy, founder of Climbing magazine as well as the 5 Point Film Festival, saw some footage of a riveting moment of grief and terror (spoiler alert) following an avalanche that almost killed Richards, and forwarded a link to Fogel.

“I thought, there’s something incredible here,” Fogel recalls. “But immediately I thought, This needs to be something different. Because — I’m not a mountaineering filmmaker; I just want to make films about

The film is almost halfway over by the time we get that first full-blown panoramic alpine shot. Prior to that, we meet Richards and his fellow climbers Simone Moro of Italy and Denis Urubko of Kazakhstan (both of whom are superstars in mountaineer-worshiping Europe) in a series of scenes that illustrate the grueling and human-sized — rather than the heroic or grandiose — aspect of the enterprise.

We are with the men inside their dark tent, where the walls have iced over and spindrift crystals swirl about while Moro coughs incessantly. And later we’re inside a bright tent as the two veteran mountaineers engage in a comical dialogue made more charming by their quirky and creative command of the English language. But mostly, we are inside Cory Richards’ head as he battles death and demons.

We learn in an early scene that the trio has decided to take advantage of a two-day break from winter storms to reach the peak. That means breaking camp before they’ve been able to fully acclimate to the altitude. And it means racing the weather up the mountain.

“We were going at a pace that was sort of a gamble,” Richards concedes, then adds, “a very big gamble.”

For Moro, the leader of the expedition, the result was a bad altitude cough — a condition that alpinists frequently face.

“He’d get up in the morning and cough a lot,” Richards recalls, “and he was coughing blood. His lungs were just raw. He suffers more than anybody.”

Richards addresses the situation matter-of-factly in the film: “In the morning Simone pukes, and we all piss so dark it looks like blood. The storm rages harder. We pack up our gear and work our way down.”

For Fogel, the ordeal came later.

Having gotten all of the raw footage from Richards, he had to race to get it produced in time for showing at the 5 Point Festival, which takes place in his hometown.

“I logged all the video in three 16-hour days,” he says, groaning from the memory. He then had less than two months to cut and mix the whole thing.

Sitting in Banff six months later, before Cold won the biggest of its string of awards, both men are adamant that the other deserves the lion’s share of the credit for its success.

Richards is proudest that Moro, his friend and onetime idol, likes the finished product: “Simone said, ‘It’s the first time I’ve ever seen an honest movie about mountaineering.’”

But he insists that it’s Fogel’s movie. “I think what you did is you made a new kind of mountaineering film,” he tells his colleague. “You’ve changed the way people will look at mountaineering films.”

he term “gluten-free” has become something of a catchphrase around Boulder.

There are gluten-free restaurants, gluten-free frozen foods, gluten-free cookies, bagels and breads. Though gluten-free foods are becoming a norm in Boulder, there is some debate about whether going gluten-free is just a fad or truly a healthier life choice.

Executive Chef Jeff Barbour of Restaurant 4580 in North Boulder says that when he moved to Boulder six years ago, he was taken aback by requests for gluten-free foods.

“I thought it would be a bit like the Atkins Diet fad. I didn’t know what it was or what the deal was,” Barbour says. “I had never heard of it before I came to Boulder, but then when you work with people that have to deal with having an intolerance on a daily basis, you realize how important it is for them.”

About 80 percent of the menu at 4580 is now gluten-free. In working with Restaurant 4580, whose owners are gluten-intolerant, Barbour says that he has found ways to make gluten-free foods that do not sacrifice taste.

“Now I realize that some people are more intolerant than others, and people saying they’re gluten-free aren’t necessarily phony,” Barbour says. “Our owners understand what it’s like if you have a gluten intolerance and you go out to a restaurant and you don’t have that many options.”

“I think a lot of people who don’t feel good are deciding to remove gluten from their diet and finding that they feel better, and that is something that wouldn’t have been an option in the past,” Reagan says. “More people are aware of this being a potential culprit in their health problems, and so they’re more willing to try.”

On the other hand, there are people who aren’t glutenintolerant but choose to remove it from their diet anyway, under the assumption that if so many people are doing it, it must be the healthier way to go.

“That’s such a farce,” Reagan says. “Gluten-free foods are often times less healthy, because they will have less fiber and they are less nutrient-rich.

Instead of your whole-grain flours or rye or barley flours, you’re now using white rice flour, tapioca flour or potato flour, a lot of white starches that don’t have the nutrients that the whole grains do. They also add a lot of sugar to those products.

I know people who go on gluten-free diets and actually gain weight.”

For people with gastrointestinal problems, Reagan suggests removing gluten from the diet completely for a couple of weeks. If the problems improve, celiac disease or gluten intolerance could be the culprit, and Reagan recommends further consultation or testing.

unday morning was rough. I had injured Laudisio my knee the day 1710 29th St. Suite 1076, before, resulting in Boulder, 303-442-1300 an ER visit and an unsure prognosis. My friend Ann suggested an ameliorative brunch, and I was game, but not necessarily up for one of those popular joints with a long wait and hip vibe. Nor was I necessarily enthused about hitting an in-and-out coffee shop for quick ham and eggs. I sought something a touch more elevated than that; a place where I could have a leisurely prepared meal with a few more flourishes.

Ann proposed Laudisio, where we were met by another friend, Lauren.

Upon entering, I took the elegant but unpretentious setting as just what the doctor ordered, if he or she was prescribing ambience over say, knee immo- lated sugar. Ann pointed out that powbilizers. The servers were attentive dered sugar might have been a better without being overly familiar, the atmo- choice and, like the aranciata, a smidge sphere was peaceful, and the menu was less sweet would have benefited this divided into egg dishes, sweet specialpastry. Laudisio’s version features organic orange juice and simple syrup, although in this case the beverage would be better served by a whisper, rather than an inside voice, of sweetener. creamy but crumbly interior carried the Nonetheless, it was an agreeable day. refresher lacking the acidity of its Ann opted for the $13 prosciutto imported counterpart. crudo pizza with a $4 upcharge for a Next up was a helping of $5 sepgluten-free crust. s one might guess, comfort food is key right now, and unsurprisingly, I was pleased to hear that bakers Kim and Jake’s Cakes (641 S. Broadway, Boulder 303-499-9126) have teamed up with Glacier Ice Cream. For Valentine’s Day, K&J and Glacier collaborated on a limited edition Red Velvet ice cream, combining cake and a cream cheese ice cream base.

While that’s likely sold out now, their Mardi Gras King Cake collaboration is available at Glacier’s 4760 Baseline location in Boulder (303-499-4760).

dation, but I also know that many gluten-free diners don’t have a choice, and I certainly didn’t have any problem with the crispness of this house-made crust.

The toppings of arugula, eggs, crushed tomato, mozzarella and cured meat would have made for a fine omelet in their own right. Each element was distinctive, but none overwhelmed the others.

Lauren had the $13 bistro steak and eggs, garnished with bright arugula. The Never Ever steak carried a clean, grassy flavor, and was one of the better cuts of meat I’ve had in this breakfast standard. The hearty home fries were properly crisp on the outside, with the requisite soft interior.

An $11 plate of lemon ricotta pancakes topped with whipped cream and almond slivers hit the spot with fluffy texture and fresh lemon tang, subtly enhanced by the cheese. Just the right measure of sweetness rendered the maple syrup superfluous, and the overall effect of this stand-

by was that it held enough heft to satisfying without making one feel weighed down.

While Laudisio is best known for its Italian-influenced lunches and dinners, it certainly satisfies with its solidly constructed brunch menu, which is only offered on the weekends. My needs on the morning of my visit were more specific than usual, and the serene feel, simple but well-executed preparations, and detail-oriented but unobtrusive service made Laudisio a recuperative experience.

Devil’s Thumb Ranch in Tabernash will hold the second dinner and beer pairing in its yearlong Brewmaster Dinner Series Feb. 24, when they’ll offer three tastings from Steamworks Brewing of Durango. Executive Chef Evan Treadwell and his culinary team coordinate with specially selected breweries and their brewmaster to customize menus that showcase each beer’s qualities. Members of the brewery will also be on hand to share insights on the process. Seats are $39, which includes a threecourse dinner with beer pairings. The events run from 6 to 9 p.m. and reservations are recommended.

Devil’s Thumb will also host cooking classes led by Treadwell in the newly opened Yager House, which includes a demonstration kitchen. To celebrate “the culinary scene of Denver” and to combat that dead time between Valentine’s Day and the summer, scores of Denver-area restaurants will participate in Denver Restaurant Week, Feb. 25 to March 9.

That’s right — Denver Restaurant “Week” lasts for two weeks. And the “Denver” part isn’t entirely true either — 23 restaurants in the Boulder area will participate this year, from Louisville to North Boulder, including several in downtown Boulder. Participating restaurants offer a multi-course menu for $52.80 for two or $26.40 for one. Reservations are generally recommended.

Ovens help, but a perfectly cooked piece of shit is still shit.

So I’ve been trying, over the past few months, to master a pizza that tastes like it was cooked in a Tuscan backyard. And I believe I’ve done it, with no less than the worst oven I have ever had in any home I have ever lived in.

But you have to be patient.

There are a lot of components that need to W to execute this. But oncen C come together in order o O you finish, I promise you,PitEwill your mind ar yout r N ablow b i L t n i N l or that little of your head and into your car, and guy will drive all the way to Trinidad and put itself on a waiting list to get a sex change. How can a brain get a sex change? You’re over-thinking this.

So this week, I’m only going to cover the starter for the dough. This is a starter I lifted from Tartine Bread, one of the best books on baking bread I’ve ever come across (Thanks, Mo!). It takes three to five days to develop a starter, but once it’s finished, you’ll have it for life, unless you kill it.

Note: Don’t kill it.

Starter for seriously awesome pizza dough 2 tbsp. wheat flour 2 tbsp. white flour About ¼ cup water Additional flour for feeding In a small jar or Tupperware container, mix flours together, then add enough water to achieve the consistency of pancake batter.

Let the mixture sit for 24 hours with either a tea towel or paper towel over it.

By this time, tiny bubbles should have formed on the sides of the container (if not, let it sit another day), which is a good sign it’s ready to be fed. Before you do that, though, smell it. You’re looking for a sourdough/stinky cheese scent. If you got the bubbles and the stank, then throw away about 80 percent of it. Trust me.

Add another 2 tbsp. each of both white and wheat flour, and an equal amount of water (that’s 4 tbsp. if you’re not counting) to the remaining mixture, stir to combine, and re-cover for another 24 hours.

Continue to discard and feed every 24 hours until the starter has a consistent clock, meaning it bubbles up and fills the container about 5-8 hours after each feeding. This can be achieved in as short as two feedings or as many as six. You’re looking for predictability, and once you have it, you have yourself a starter.

If you begin today, then it will be ready by next week’s installment: the pizza dough and sauce.
