Highroad Exposing our ‘populist’ president as a naked plutocrat by Jim Hightower

ave you noticed that Donald Trump constantly prefaces his outlandish lies with such phrases as: “To be honest with you,” “To tell the truth,” and “Believe me”?

Why? Because like a snake-oil salesman, he constantly needs to convince himself that he’s speaking the truth in order to perform his next lie convincingly. The show must go on... and on. In fact, he already ranks as the lyingest president in U.S. history. And that includes Nixon!

Trump’s biggest whopper is that

he’s an honest-toGod “populist,” standing up for America’s hard-hit middle class against Wall Street, corporate lobbyists and moneyed elites. This prevarication has duped many working stiffs into thinking he’s their champion. The huckster doubleddown on this lie in his inaugural address last year, pompously declaring, “The forgotten men and women of our country will be forgotten no longer.”

That’s why a new, straight-talking pamphlet by the watchdog group Public Citizen is so important. It exposes the “people’s champion” as a rank fraud who has pushed, from day one, to further enrich and empower the corporate elites he had denounced as a

candidate. Public Citizen’s report documents with concise, easy-to-grasp specifics on how Trump-the-faux-populist has systematically sold out the working families whose votes he cynically swiped, handing our government to a kakistocracy of corporate plutocrats.

It’s not merely that he’s an irredeemable liar, but that Trump himself is a lie. The Public Citizen exposé is titled “Forgetting the Forgotten: 101 Ways Donald Trump Has Betrayed the Middle Class,” and it drives the stake of truth through the heart of his populist pretensions.

ox News personality Geraldo Rivera recently told network host Sean Hannity that President Nixon would have survived the Watergate scandal if Fox News had been on the air at the time.

Hannity was hyperventilating on his radio show about how Trump is being persecuted by the FBI, the Justice Department and Bob Mueller. His guest, Rivera, chimed in with these intriguing remarks: “Nixon never would have been forced to resign if you existed in your current state back in 1972, ’73, ’74. ...

It’s too bad for Nixon, because nobody like you existed then. I say that because I believe that our prime responsibility now is to unshackle the 45th president of the United States.”

As it turns out, the Nixon White House was attempting to create an entity such as Fox News. In 2011, Gawker uncovered a 1970 document by Nixon aides entitled “A Plan For Putting the GOP on TV News.”

It was a partisan, pro-Republican news operation to be potentially paid for and run out of the White House that would counter the “censorship” of the supposedly liberal mainstream media and deliver prepackaged proNixon news to local television stations.

It didn’t get off the ground.

But a few years later, Boston investment banker and former ABC Radio president Robert Pauley decided to create a rightwing TV news service, which would sell fully produced video packages to local stations. Pauley had been an enthusiastic supporter of Barry Goldwater and a member of the John Birch Society (a group which claimed that Communists controlled liberal and even moderate politicians as well as the civil rights movement and labor unions).

Pauley approached Colorado beer baron Joe Coors for money. Gabe Sherman notes, “Coors represented a new breed of conservative philanthropist — ideologically rigid, religiously fervent, immensely wealthy — who poured millions into bringing about a right-wing revival that braided the strands of Christianity, nationalism and free market economics into a political force.”

was established. Joe said he was bankrolling the enterprise because, “network news is slanted to the liberal-left side of the spectrum and does not give a balanced view to the American public.”

He hired seven experienced print and broadcast journalists. Dick Graf, who had been the news director of WNBC TV in New York, became TVN’s news director. He told Coors, “There will be days when I’ll put pieces on the air that will make your flesh crawl because of your personal beliefs. But I’ll be doing it because of my professional news judgment, and I’ll play them down the middle.” Coors replied, “That’s what we want you to do.”

Coors had his political assistant, Jack Wilson, monitor TVN’s content for him. Before TVN went on the air, Wilson gathered numerous story ideas from conservative legislators on Capitol Hill. Graf resisted these suggestions.

Soon Wilson and Coors wrote him that his coverage, “requires a more balanced presentation of the news than the service has thus far exhibited.” Wilson sent angry memos. He told Graf that TVN shouldn’t cover a press conference by the American Civil Liberties Union because the ACLU is, “generally recognized as the legal arm of the extreme left if not the Communist Party.” He asked why should Graf interview an associate of Martin Luther King when everyone knew King, “was an avowed communist revolutionary.”

Coors was also upset. “Why are you covering Daniel Ellsberg? He’s a traitor to this country,” he yelled at Graf. At a board meeting, Coors said Graf ’s news instincts were “socialistic.”

Coors fired Graf and made Wilson the president of TVN. “I hate Dan Rather,” Wilson complained. “I hate all these network people. They’re destroying the country. We have to unify the country. TVN is the moral cement.”

Most of the network-trained journalists were purged.

They decided to hire a young public relations consultant named Roger Ailes as the news director. He had never been a journalist. He was a Republican political operative best known for transforming the image of Richard Nixon in the 1968 campaign. He had been see THE ANDERSON FILES Page 7

I very much appreciate the decisionforming information in Joel Dyer’s editorial (Re: “For establishment Dems, it’s Party before people and the planet,” Dyertimes, Feb. 15, 2018) regarding the candidacy of Joe Neguse without agreeing with what seems to be your conclusion that every establishment-wing Democrat listed on his website is an enemy of the people and the planet and should have a target on their backs.

I read your paper every week and your underlying editorial belief seems to be that the “establishment” Democrats stole the Presidency from Bernie, and that a blue wave of Democratic wins are a given in 2018 unless the “establishment” Democrats screw it up again by being hypocritical idiots.

That very well may be the whole truth, but the stakes are so high in 2018, I would ask that you consider another possibility.

Maybe it is complicated, and the imperfect human beings that make up the Democratic party have many drivers, one of which is trying to make government work for people and the planet using the structures of our political system that are very, very flawed, while the democratic institutions those systems are holding up are under assault.

Money and power are being consolidated towards authoritarianism in many ways, including by weaponizing information, with salacious distractions, by discrediting any institutional checks on power, and by sowing hatred, blame and divisiveness among the 99 percent. Once the latter are adequately stoked, they can proliferate on their own among good, caring people fueled by anger and fear.

These are dire times, and I hope that

while we still can, we each get involved and support primary candidates that align with our every issue and reach for our greatest ideals, and in the general election we wholeheartedly support the candidate that could be responsive to the electorate and provide thoughtful leadership, all the while recognizing the need to change the gerrymandered, moneyed, winner-take-all, Electoral College system to strengthen and defend our democracy.

We are lucky: Tim Waters is highly qualified for Longmont City Council from Ward 1.

Watching the video of the Sustainability Forum recently sponsored

by Longmont Observer, Eco-cycle and SRL, I was impressed with Tim Waters for addition to the Longmont City Council. Waters is wonderfully qualified as a former CEO and education professional. He showed himself to be articulate and knowledgeable about local issues with good ideas about how to facilitate moving Longmont towards a progressive and fair future. Observing Josh Goldberg, he is a bright and attractive young man with good experience in local event management and on the Longmont Planning and Zoning Commission. However, Goldberg often acknowledged that he lacks information and would rely on city staff for ideas.

Goldberg supports incentives for developers; incentives for developers were adopted in 2011 to replace “inclusionary housing,” but incentives have not produced any affordable housing since then.

2) Fracking: Both candidates say they are opposed to fracking in the urban area.

Waters has specific ideas for new local regulation of underground flow lines and fees for associated water and noise pollution. Goldberg’s softer idea was to negotiate with oil and gas industry representatives; he also stated that fracking problems should be addressed on a state level.

3) Renewable Energy: Waters proposes that the city be a standard bearer for developing new methods of energy use, such as providing infrastructure for electric cars, for a future that will be less dependent on oil and gas. Goldberg could only say that he supports hybrid cars and education to make the city friendly to renewable energy.

4) Land Use: Waters recognizes that urbanization and its impacts on agricultural lands are serious issues arising with Longmont’s growth. He suggests that land use codes need to be updated to correspond with Envision Longmont, our new comprehensive plan, with Planning and Zoning (PZ) leading the way for land use to correspond to a bigger vision of our future. Goldberg merely suggests that PZ hear more from the public about where to preserve agricultural lands.

Goldberg’s sojourn on the Planning Commission has been accompanied by little restraint on developers. Gravel mining is being allowed on stream-adjacent lands that are currently zoned agricultural. Conversion of agricultural lands to concrete will increase flooding problems and diminish the quality of the landscapes we have enjoyed. New developments are allowed to be built to butt-up to schools, thus increasing traffic and diminishing safety for students. These are reasons enough to vote for Tim Waters for City Council from Ward 1.

A

s with any toxic relationship, the possibility of a breakup sparks feelings of terror — and maybe a little bit of relief.

That’s the spot that Facebook has put much of the news business in. Last month, the social media behemoth announced it would once again alter its News Feed algorithm to show users even more posts from their friends and family, and a lot fewer from media outlets.

The move isn’t all that surprising. Ever since the 2016 U.S. election, Facebook’s been under siege for creating a habitat where fake news stories flourished. Their executives were dragged before Congress last year to testify about how they sold ads to Russians who wanted to influ10 February 22, 2018

ence the election, and so, in some ways, it’s simply easier for them to get out of the news business altogether.

But for the many news outlets that have come to rely on Facebook funneling readers to their sites, the impact of a separation sounds catastrophic. “The End of the Social News Era?” a New York Times headline asked. “Facebook is breaking up with news,” an ad for the new BuzzFeed app proclaimed. When a giant like Facebook takes a step — until recently, the social media site had been sending more traffic to news outlets than Google — the resulting quake can cause an entire industry to crumble.

Consumers, meanwhile, have grimaced as their favorite media outlets have stooped to sensational headlines to lure Facebook’s web traffic. They’ve become disillusioned by Boulder Weekly

the flood of hoaxes and conspiracy theories that have run rampant on the site.

A Knight Foundation/Gallup poll released last month revealed that only one-third of Americans had a positive view of the media. About 57 percent said that websites or apps using algorithms to determine which news stories readers see was a major problem for democracy. Two-thirds believed the media being “dramatic or too sensational in order to attract more readers or viewers” was a major problem.

Now, sites that rely on Facebook’s algorithm have watched the floor drop out from under them when the algorithm is changed — all while Facebook has gobbled up chunks of print advertising revenue.

It’s all landed many media outlets in a hell of a quandary: It sure seems like Facebook is killing journalism. But can journalism survive without it?

“Traffic is such a drug right now,” says Sean Robinson, a 53-year-old investigative reporter at the Tacoma News Tribune.

“The industry is hurting so bad that it’s really hard to detox.”

You won’t believe what happens next It’s perhaps the perfect summation of the internet age: a website that started because a college kid wanted to rank which coeds were hottest became a global goliath powerful enough to influence the fate of the news industry itself.

When Facebook first launched its “News Feed” in 2006, it ironically didn’t have anything to do with news. At least, not how we think of it. This was the website that still posted a little broken-heart icon when you changed your status from “In a Relationship” to “Single.”

The News Feed was intended to be a list of personalized updates from your friends. When Facebook was talking about “news stories,” it meant, in the words of Facebook’s announcement, like “when Mark adds Britney Spears to his Favorites or when your crush is single again.”

But in 2009, Facebook introduced its iconic “like” button. Soon, instead of showing posts in chronological order, the News Feed began showing you the popular posts first.

And that made all the difference.

Facebook didn’t invent going viral — grandmas with AOL accounts were forwarding funny emails and chain letters when Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg was still in grade school — but its algorithm amplified it. Well-liked posts soared.

Unpopular posts simply went unseen.

Google had an algorithm too. So did YouTube.

Journalists were given a new directive: If you wanted readers to see your stories, you had to play by the algorithm’s rules. Faceless, mystery formulas had replaced the stodgy newspaper editor as the gatekeeper of information.

So when the McClatchy Company — a chain Boulder Weekly

that owns 31 daily papers including the Tacoma News Tribune and the Bellingham Herald — launched its reinvention strategy last year, knowing how to get Facebook traffic was central.

“Facebook has allowed us to get our journalism out to hundreds of millions more people than it would have otherwise,” says McClatchy’s Vice President of News Tim Grieve, a fast-talking former Politico editor. “It has forced us, and all publishers, to sharpen our game to make sure we’re writing stories that connect with people.”

With digital ad rates tied to web traffic, the incentives in the modern media landscape could be especially perverse: Write short, write lots. Pluck heartstrings or stoke fury.

In short, be more like Upworthy. A site filled with multi-sentence emotion-baiting headlines, Upworthy begged you to click by promising that you would be shocked, outraged or inspired — but not telling you why. (One example: “His first 4 sentences are interesting. The 5th blew my mind. And made me a little sick.”)

By November of 2013, Upworthy was pulling in 88 million unique visitors a month. With Facebook’s help, the formula spread.

The McClatchy-owned Bellingham Herald headlined a short crime story about the arrest of a carjacker this way: “Four people, two cars, one gun. What happens next?”

A short Herald story asking for tips about a recent spree of indecent exposure was headlined, “She was looking at her phone, but the man wanted her to watch him masturbate.”

Even magazines like Time and Newsweek — storied publications that sent photojournalists to war zones — began pumping out articles like, “Does Reese Witherspoon Have 3 Legs on Vanity Fair’s Cover?” and “Trump’s Hair Loss Drug Causes Erectile Dysfunction.”

Newsweek’s publisher went beyond clickbait; the magazine was actually buying traffic through pirated video sites, allegedly engaging in ad fraud.

On Monday Feb. 5, Newsweek senior writer Matthew Cooper resigned in disgust after several Newsweek editors and reporters who’d written about the publisher’s series of scandals were fired. He heaped contempt on an organization that had installed editors who “recklessly sought clicks at the expense of accuracy, retweets over fairness” and left him “despondent not only for Newsweek but for the other publications that don’t heed the lessons of this publication’s fall.”

Mathew Ingram, who covers digital media for Columbia Journalism Review, says such tactics might increase traffic for a while. But readers hate it. Sleazy tabloid shortcuts gives you a sleazy tabloid reputation.

“Short-term you can make a certain amount of money,” Ingram says. “Long-term you’re basically setting fire to your brand.”

One strategy throughout the industry is to down-

play the location of a story: readers in other markets are more likely to click if they don’t know it happened thousands of miles away.

Robinson, the veteran Tacoma News Tribune reporter, says local cops have complained about crime stories from elsewhere that were being shared on Facebook by local TV stations without context — worrying local readers were being misled into thinking they happened in Tacoma.

Grieve, the McClatchy executive, says that he doesn’t ever want to sensationalize a story. But he also says that “internet and social media are noisy places,” and papers have to sell their stories aggressively to be heard over the din.

“If you’re writing stories that aren’t getting read,” Grieve says, “you’re not a journalist — you’re keeping a journal.”

Clickbait and switch Plenty of media outlets have tried to build their business on the foundation of the News Feed algorithm. But they quickly got a nasty surprise: That foundation can collapse in an instant.

As Facebook’s News Feed became choked with links to Upworthy and its horde of imitators, the social network declared war on clickbait. It tweaked its algorithms, which proved catastrophic for Upworthy.

“It keeps changing,” Ingram says, “Even if the algorithm was bad in some way, at least if it’s predictable, you could adapt.”

A 2014 Time magazine story estimated that two to three global algorithm tweaks on Facebook were happening every week.

Six years ago, for example, KHQ, a TV news station in Spokane, Washington, told readers they’d have “an ENTIRE day here on FB dedicated to positive local news” if the post got liked 500 times. It worked. The post got more than 1,200 likes, and KHQ followed through with a puppy-picture-laden “Feel Good Friday!!!”

Under the current Facebook algorithm that tactic could get their entire page demoted. So could using shameless “you-won’t-believe-what-happened-next” style phrases.

Much of the time, Facebook and Google don’t announce their shifts up front. Media outlets often have had to reverse-engineer the changes, before issuing new commands to their troops in the field.

“Oh, they changed their algorithm again?”

Robinson says. “Oh, what is it today, coach? OK, it’s 50-word [headlines] instead of 60?”

A pattern emerged. Step 1: Media outlets reinvent themselves for Facebook. Step 2: Facebook makes that reinvention obsolete.

Big publishers leaped at the chance to publish “Instant Articles” directly on Facebook, only to find that the algorithm soon charged, rewarding videos more than posts and rendering Instant Articles largely obsolete. So publishers like Mic.com, Mashable and Vice News “pivoted to video,” laying off dozens of journalists in the process.

“Then Facebook said they weren’t as interested in video anymore,” Ingram says. “Classic bait and switch.”

video posts from national media pages and too far away from personal posts from friends and family.

They were getting back to their roots.

And now, news organizations who’d dumped a lot of money into eye-catching pre-recorded video would suffer the most under the latest algorithm changes, Facebook’s News Feed VP Adam Mosseri told TechCrunch last month, because “video is such a passive experience.”

Even before the announcement, news sites had seen their articles get fewer and fewer hits from Facebook. Last year, Google once again became the biggest referrer of news traffic as Facebook referrals decreased.

Many sites published tutorials pleading with their readers to manually change their Facebook settings to guarantee the site’s appearance in their news feeds.

“Some media outlets saw their [Facebook] traffic decline by as much as 30 to 40 percent,” Ingram says. “Everybody knew something was happening, but we didn’t know what.”

It might be easy to mock those who chased the algorithm from one trend to another with little to show for it. But the reality, Ingram says, is that many of them didn’t really have a choice.

“You pretty much have to do something with Facebook,” Ingram says. “You have to. It’s like gravity. You can’t avoid it.”

Zuckerberg’s comments that stories that sparked “meaningful social interactions” would do the best on Facebook caused some to scoff.

“For Facebook, it’s bad if you read or watch content without reacting to it on Facebook. Let that sink in for a moment,” tech journalist Joshua Topolsky wrote at The Outline. “This notion is so corrupt it’s almost comical.”

In subsequent announcements, Facebook gave nervous local news outlets some better news: They’d rank local community news outlets higher in the feed than national ones. They were also launching an experiment for a new section called “Today In,” focusing on local news and announcements, beta-testing the concept in cities like Olympia.

But in early tests, the site seemed to have trouble determining what’s local.

Seattle Times reporter Joe O’Sullivan noted on Twitter that of the five stories featured in a screenshot of Facebook’s Olympia test, “NONE OF THEM ARE OLYMPIA STORIES. ZERO.” The Seattle Times and other outlets say they’re taking a “wait-and-see” approach to the latest algorithm, analyzing how the impact shakes out before making changes. They’ve learned to not get excited.

“It just, more and more, seems like Facebook and news are not super compatible,” says Shan Wang, staff writer at Harvard University’s Nieman Journalism Lab. At least not for real news. For fake news, Facebook’s been a perfect match.

Faking it There was a time Facebook was positively smug about their impact on the world.

After all, they’d seen their platform fan the flames of popular uprisings during the Arab Spring in places like Tunisia, Iran and Egypt.

“By giving people the power to share, we are starting to see people make their voices heard on a different scale from what has historically been possible,” Zuckerberg bragged in a 2012 letter to investors under the header, “we hope to change how people relate to their governments and social institutions.”

And Facebook certainly has — though not the way it intended.

A BuzzFeed investigation before the 2016 presidential election found that “fake news” stories on Facebook, hoaxes or hyperpartisan falsehoods actually performed better on Facebook than stories from major trusted outlets like the New York Times.

That, experts speculated, is another reason why Facebook, despite its massive profits, might be pulling back from its focus on news.

“As unprecedented numbers of people channel their political energy through this medium, it’s being used in unforeseen ways with societal repercussions that were never anticipated,” writes Samidh Chakrabarti, Facebook’s product manager for civic engagement, in a recent blog post.

The exposure was widespread.

A Dartmouth study found about one-fourth of Americans visited at least one fake-news website — and Facebook was the primary vector of misinformation. While researchers didn’t find fake news swung the election — though about 80,000 votes in three states is a pretty small margin to swing — the effect has endured.

Donald Trump has played a role. He snatched away the term used to describe hoax websites and wielded it as a blunderbuss against the press, blasting away at any negative reporting as “fake news.”

By last May, a Harvard-Harris poll found that almost two-thirds of voters believed that mainstream news outlets were full of fake news stories.

It takes a village... of idiots

unning the story on Facebook is not our way of whining about Boulder Weekly’s business model. Fortunately, we never made page views and unique visitors a cornerstone of our endeavors. That’s to say, from a business perspective, we really don’t care if Facebook changes its algorithm every 10 seconds. We care if it destroys our democracy.

Unlike the companies mentioned in the article, we don’t

try to “sell our journalism aggressively” because social media is such a “noisy place.” We understand that trying to shout louder than everyone else in a really noisy place only accomplishes one thing: the

place simply gets noisier.

On the previous pages, the executive from the McClatchy newspaper chain says, “If you’re writing stories that aren’t getting read, you’re not a journalist — you’re keeping a journal.” And to that I say, what a complete idiot.

By that news executive’s measure, a 3,000-word expose on the corrupting power of PAC money (read: anti-clickbait) is less an example of journalism than a titillating 500word piece about an Olympic skater’s costume fail titled,

“She showed us more than she bargained for.” Seriously, this guy is a perfect example of the industry’s visionless executives who have hastened the demise of the mainstream news industry at least as much as Mark Zuckerberg’s controversial platform.

The news industry isn’t failing because of unpredictable changes to algorithms. It’s failing because it has replaced its responsibility to our democracy with a clickbaiting-for-dollars business model while simultaneously gutting its editorial staffs.

Zuckerberg may have handed the mainstream news industry the gun, but it’s the thoughtless executives at the top who have put it to their head and pulled the trigger. But there’s plenty of blame to go around for how we got here.

If you get your “news” primarily from Facebook... there’s a good chance you’re helping to drive our democracy to the brink. It’s not that you’re a bad person, it’s just that your opinions about what’s best for our country have likely been shaped by a good deal of inaccurate or completely false information.

I’m not saying you are unintelligent.

Anyone who believes that they are not susceptible to the power of sustained exposure to propaganda is simply ignorant of how our brains work. If you’ve been trapped in a selfaffirming Facebook feedback loop, red or blue, you are a victim. But even so, it appears that it was Facebook’s victims from all across the political spectrum who made our country susceptible to the Russian attack that has imperiled our nation and given us President Donald J. Trump.

Thanks to Vladimir Putin, we now know the dark side of Facebook news. The short version: Russia uses the platform to feed our worst prejudices, left and right. It gives us false information in the form of news we want to believe and then it encourages folks from both sides to show up for a protest or rally at the same street corner at the same time. And when all hell breaks loose as a result, Russia’s fake news has created a real news story of violence and strife that then helps tear our country apart.

I’ve got to say, it’s nothing short of genius. But it’s also our own fault for trusting the flow of critical news information into our lives to a soulless platform designed to generate profit by telling college students which coeds are the hottest. What the hell is wrong with us? Are we really this lazy and undiscerning? Does it take a village of idiots to destroy a democracy? Apparently so.

It is the news industry’s decision to overhype every hateful, ignorant word out of Trump’s mouth in its effort to chase the magic algorithms that have made it nearly impossible for folks to tell the difference between their “real news” and Facebook’s ocean of “fake news.” What we need is more “responsible” news, otherwise it all starts to look the same.

If the McClatchy guy is right, then to save our democracy we need way less “journalism” and far more journalists keeping journals. But we also need an electorate that’s able to tell the difference and willing to seek out the latter. We all have to try harder.

JeffCo School District suspends field trips to Rocky Flats

tudents attending Jefferson County Public Schools aren’t likely to be going on any field trips to the Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge, 4,883 acres of open space surrounding the former nuclear weapons facility site 10 miles south of Boulder.

On Feb. 8, JeffCo Superintendent Jason Glass sent a memo to school staff stating that, “out of an abundance of caution for our students, I am hereby directing staff to schedule no visits to the Rocky Flats Wildlife Refuge without requesting prior approval from my office.”

While the Refuge is already open to guided tours, by the summer of 2019 the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) intends to begin construction of a visitor center and 20 miles of trails fully accessible to the public.

The memo came on the heels of a Jan. 10 meeting between Glass and the Rocky Flats Technical Group, a collection of experts — including University of Colorado Boulder Professor Emeritus of Biology Dr. Harvey Nichols, chemist Anne Fenerty, Gale Biggs, Ph.D., and Jon Lipsky, the former Federal Bureau of Investigation agent who led the 1989 raid on Rocky Flats — focusing on the public health implications of opening the Refuge to recreation.

“There are enough safety concerns because it is an unremediated plot of land, that I applaud the school district for taking a cautious approach concerning the issue,” says Elizabeth Panzer, who lives in an Arvada housing development just outside the Refuge and whose three sons attend JeffCo schools.

her concerns with Rocky Flats arose after her middle son, now 14, was diagnosed with a “very rare heart cancer.”

She became even more worried when a neighbor succumbed to a similar heart cancer.

JeffCo joins Boulder Valley, St. Vrain, Adams 12, Adams County and Westminster school districts, all of which have opted out of school-sponsored trips to the Refuge over the last year.

The decisions follow in the wake of years of advocacy from the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center, Rocky Flats Right to Know, Rocky Flats Downwinders, Candelas Glows and Keep Kids Off Rocky Flats, which has an ongoing petition on Change.org.

While Glass’ memo amounts to a virtual ban on Rocky Flats visits, it made no definitive statements about the risks of visiting the site, saying there are “compelling points and evidence that have been provided by all sides of this debate” and that it is outside the “professional capacity of the school district to make any sort of definitive scientific judgment on this matter.”

Colorado Public Department of Health and Environment, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the USFWS all admit that Refuge lands are contaminated with plutonium from the manufacture of nuclear weapons, yet at levels low enough to ensure the safety of visitors — with less than a one in a million risk of developing cancer.

Critics, on the other hand, contend that there is no safe level of exposure to plutonium and the drawbacks of visiting the Refuge far outweigh the benefits.

Hive in 130-year-old trunk relocated from Westminster town center

n a gray January morning, Chad Street stands in the dry Allen Ditch along 88th Street in front of what will soon become the new Westminster town center and mall. He pokes his head inside a foot-wide cavity in the standing trunk of a 130-year-old cottonwood, home to as many as 40,000 feral

black bees.

“That should be the one main entrance,” he says. “You can see the comb.

They should be super, super calm. Above 40 to 50 degrees, and they’ll start flying.”

Street rolls up a section of black screen material and carefully pushes it into the cavity. He then opens up the 3-by-3-foot screen and begins to staple it around the perimeter of the hollow opening.

Cranes swing overhead, construction vehicles sound warnings and steel workers pound beyond the construction fence while traffic whizzes past — all oblivious to the rescue efforts underway.

Street, arborist and owner of Longmont-based Bees and Trees, was called in by City of Westminster Forester John Kasza to save the bees residing in the hollow stump, slated for removal in order to create an alleyway into the mall. The 10,000-pound stump, which stands about 12 feet high with a girth of 8 feet, is part of a row of old cottonwoods that have been growing along the ditch for the past 130 years. When the city purchased the property five years ago, the original plan was to clear out all of the mature cottonwoods, Kasza says.

“This is going to become the downtown Westminster never had,” he explains. Looking up at the dark branches extending into the gray sky, Kasza says he believes there are additional hives and wildlife up in the hollows of the remaining cottonwoods. “In the next tree over, we have a hawk’s nest,” he says.

So, as the old mall comes down to make way for the new, Kasza says the City has taken extra effort to try to save the trees and hives “just to be good stewards of the land and animals.”

Street and fellow arborist Dennis Shea proceed to cut off the protruding branches on opposite sides of the broad stump to reduce its weight and girth.

The bees “won’t like the sound (of the chain saws) and the fact that we’re cutting into their home,” Street says.

One section of the tree after another falls heavily to the ground and rolls into the ditch. Meanwhile, the bees and Street, who says he’s probably been stung 1,000 times (about 100 times each season) remain nonplussed.

“Generally, if you’re calm, they’re calm,” he says.

According to Street, the feral bees inside are most likely German black bees that escaped managed hives and became naturalized over time. “German black bees were the first honeybees that had been brought to North America,” he says. Although there are about 900 native bee varieties found in Colorado, “No honey bees — European honey bees — are native to North America,” he says.

“The darker the bee, the more natural it is.”

As Shea continues taking wedgeshaped cuts out of the high side of the stump, Street, standing in the ditch, makes several small cuts with the tip of his chain saw blade probing into the center of the hollow trunk. He esti-

mates the honeycomb extends 4 feet down into the trunk from the hole that he had previously covered. He hesitates, licking his lips. “My chain saw bar was definitely sweet,” he says.

A few weeks later, Street pulls back a tarp draped over the bisected section of the cottonwood that he hauled in his trailer to his home just south of Longmont. “That’s just to keep them warm,” he says. Street, who has over 10 bee boxes and another seven hives still living in tree trunks, says he may try to transfer the queen, hive and a piece of the comb to a box if the hive survives this winter.

“I think tree guys have a unique opportunity to have access to bees,” he says. Even though fast growing trees like cottonwoods, willows, silver maples and elms are the most likely to provide habitat for bees and raptors, he says, they can often become a liability near houses or in urban areas. If a cavity is in the main stem of the tree, it may be hazardous and have to come down. “I would sure like to save more trees,” he says.

Street, who with his wife participates with the Longmont Coalition for People and Pollinators, says bees are under stress for a number of reasons including habitat loss, use of chemicals, “weird weather,” transporting of hives and invasive beetles and mites.

“Last year I would’ve said, ‘Start a hive.’ That’s not helping them,” he says. “We need more habitat.”

This spring, when he’s not saving bees from trees like the one from Westminster, Street plans to plant wild plum trees, serviceberries and rabbitbrush to support his bees in their adopted home. Street looks around his property with the stumps, bee boxes, tree equipment, and the tall elms and conifers along his property lines.

“It’s alfalfa behind us,” he says. “I want it to be all wildflowers.”

Three decades deep, Big Head Todd and the Monsters are better than ever

think I’m in Raleigh-Durham.”

It’s 11 a.m. in North Carolina, but Todd Park Mohr sounds a little tired over the phone. No judgment, though: It’s February, and Big Head Todd and the Monsters have been on the road since early October, a few breaks tossed in around the holidays.

But Mohr and company — Rob Squires on bass, Brian Nevin on drums and Jeremy Lawton on keys — are old salts when it comes to touring. It’s in their blood. It’s what they do. It’s how they’ve traversed three decades as a cohesive unit, and how they’ve maintained a loyal following the whole way.

It all started in the late ’80s with the original trio — Mohr, Squires and Nevin — knocking on the doors of bars and clubs up and down the Front Range looking for gigs.

They’d land a gig, make enough money for a little grub and a little gas, then hop in their ’77 mustard-yellow Plymouth van, lovingly dubbed “the Colonel,” and head to the next town.

The guys met as teenagers in jazz band at Columbine High School and quickly formed a bond over a shared love of classic rock, blues and R&B. The bond was so strong that Mohr transferred from Colorado State University to join his pals at University of Colorado Boulder so they could keep making music together in college.

es, and ultimately snagging bigger venues each time they’d pass through.

Fast forward to 1993 and the boys landed a deal with Giant Records and released their third album, Sister Sweetly, which they recorded at the famed Paisley Park, Prince’s production complex in Minnesota.

“One of the funny things about Paisley Park is that in order to work there we needed to sign agreements that we wouldn’t talk to or make eye contact with Prince,” Mohr says. “But NASA/Mark Sowa because we were there every day, I would run into him every day. I’d be playing pinball and he’d pass through the room often when I was playing pinball. This went on for about three months and I never once acknowledged him.

I like to think that he thought I was cool because I never acknowledged him.”

While we’ll never know if Prince thought Mohr was cool, the album was definitely hip.

Sister Sweetly went platinum — right in the sweet spot between the twilight days of hair metal while grunge was still in utero — spawning three Top 25 singles on the Billboard charts. But it wasn’t all sunshine and lollipops as the band found commercial success. The boys felt stifled by the demands of the label, and their discontent was visible. Mohr declined to make a video for the band’s biggest hit, “Bittersweet,” and refused, despite the label’s insistence, to co-write songs with artists he simply didn’t respect. see BIG HEAD TODD Page 22

The band survived the sale of Giant Records to Warner Bros. just a few years later, weathering a period of extreme creative incompatibility with their new overlords before they were finally, mercifully released from their contract.

From then on, Big Head Todd and the Monsters called the shots. They took control of their own marketing and distribution just as the internet began to blossom, and they got back to doing what they do best: touring.

“I think the music business has a lot of positive in it and some negatives,” Mohr says. “The way that the music business used to be ... there were mid-level careers because labels were interested in growing bands, realizing that bands just didn’t appear on day one. So these days it’s like there’s no middle class; there’s giant bands and small groups. I would say that’s the bad news. The good news is that there are a lot of small groups that have kind of boutique audiences and I think it’s very viable to have a career like that these days, a smaller career.”

While Big Head Todd and the Monsters don’t really fit in with the smallcareer crowd, they’ve certainly developed a cult-like following, if that’s anything like a boutique audience. This year they’ll play their 20th show at Red Rocks Amphitheater, a major benefit of being one of the crown jewels of Colorado’s music scene. The guys do a lot of what Mohr calls “fan-friendly things,” like cruises to Europe and the Caribbean. Connecting with their fans is the lifeblood of Big Head Todd and the Monsters, and the guys don’t take it for granted for even a moment.

Today the band’s touring on their 11th studio album, New World Arisin’, a record that makes good on the pioneering promise of its title. Yes, the hallmark blues sound fans know and love is there, but Mohr didn’t shy away from making a record that’s as eclectic as his own taste in music. There’s country rock, a little punk, some funk for good measure, and even a straightforward pop song, with no piece of the puzzle feeling forced into place.

Conflict is a recurring theme on the album, with songs like “Glow,” “Wipeout Turn” and “Under Your Wings” examining the ever-raw sensation of love lost, but the message is bigger than that. In general, Mohr says he’s been fixated on the concept of conflict for some time now.

“I guess it comes from a couple different sources,” he says. “I’ve gone though a couple divorces, so on a personal level it sort of sent me scrambling to understand how our own conflicts arise, but also ... it seems the world is trapped in conflict. It seems to be repeating itself over and over again. I think it’s not well understood, the relationship between pleasure and conflict. I feel like pleasure is basically winning as far as the brain is concerned. You can’t have a culture of pleasure and expect a life of culture that can make responsible decisions. You just want to win and punch back and that prolongs the problem.”

His examination of conflict seems to have landed Mohr in a good place these days. He’s married again, with a 1-year-old daughter and a stepson. He’s a selfproclaimed family man, and he’s blissfully content to spend time at home watching his daughter learn to walk and talk.

And as for the band, well, that’s never been better either.

The largest piece on “Hidden Masterpieces” will be Deo Gratias by Ockeghem, a canon for 36 voices.

“That’s a fun piece to do,” Morgan says.

“It will end up being one (singer) on each part, since we’re doing the program with 40 or 41 voices.”

Another larger piece that Morgan is delighted to present is Lasso’s motet Mira Loquor for two choruses of five voices each. “I found this in my research, and this particular motet is really fascinating,” he says. “It’s a dialogue between St. Bernard and a questioner.

One group asks questions like, ‘Bernard, do you not live?’ And the other choir responds, ‘I live.’ ‘Are you silent, or do you speak?’

‘Both!’ So it goes back and forth between the groups.”

Presented as guests on the concert, Solis will perform two works by Vecchi, as well as sacred works by Carlo Gesualdo and Cristóbal de Morales.

Made up of a counter-tenor, two tenors, a baritone and bass, Solis has focused on performing the sacred motets by Vecchi, who is better known for his secular madrigals, and other works of the Renaissance.

Morgan says, “I think we crafted a program that has a great deal of variety to it. The Lasso pieces, being very chromatic, are spare and the sound changes measure to measure, [whereas] the Ockeghem canon is one measure of harmony that evolves through the whole group. There’s a real contrast between that sharp focus and the full sound of the other pieces.”

Morgan suggests that more important than the variety is how the music can transport us beyond our everyday lives. “It’s an opportunity to hear music that is not widely known in the modern world,” he says.

Fostering understanding

The Boulder Jewish Film Festival returns with a simple message by Michael J. Casey

T

he objective of the Boulder Jewish Film Festival is clear to its founding director, Kathryn Bernheimer: “To educate, to foster an appreciation, to create a deeper understanding.”

And all three tenets will be on display March 8–18 at the Boulder Jewish Community Center and the Dairy Arts Center for the sixth annual Boulder Jewish Film Festival (BJFF).

Screening 21 films from eight countries — including stories from India and Japan — BJFF loops in talkbacks hosted by community members and area intellectuals, which keeps BJFF from being “just a bunch of movies.”

“The most important aspect of the film festival is that we talk about all the films and that people stay and participate and think about the films and the connections they have and their relevance,” Bernheimer explains.

Connections and relevance play key roles in Bernheimer’s programming.

Every year, she starts by viewing movies, 150 by her count, to “see if there are any patterns or trends or anything I can hang my hat on.” Once that’s established, she tries her best to balance out the festival’s tone.

“You could have a documentary that’s very light-hearted and fun, like Shalom Bollywood or like Curious George,” Bernheimer says. “And you can have a documentary that’s pretty intellectual, even academic, as in Hitler’s Hollywood. But the feelings are very different.”

Like Monkey Business: The Adventures of Curious George’s Creators (March 13, 4 p.m.), Shalom Bollywood is a lighter story that focuses on the power of images, which is something Hitler’s Hollywood (March 11, 1 p.m.) also does, but from a much darker side of the spectrum.

“I’m trying to balance light and dark,” Bernheimer says. “It’s a combination of both wanting variety and also wanting to have some things to talk about throughout the course of the festival.”

And there will be plenty to discuss throughout the festival, especially surrounding the topic of inclusion.

“That is a deeply embedded mission for the Jewish Community Center,” Bernheimer explains. “Any people who have had the history of persecution we’ve had could not be other than a bastion against any form of prejudice.”

BJFF kicks off at the Boulder Jewish Community Center on March 8 with Keep the Change, a New York romanticcomedy starring actors on the autism spectrum. In conjunction with the screening, Bernheimer will highlight dozens of agencies in the community offering resources to anyone living with disabilities.

“We’re going into the community to honor that work,” Bernheimer says.

“One of the things I hope is that there are some people who come who aren’t plugged into the wonderful resources and see where they might fit.”

Where people fit in the community also gets to the heart of another theme found in this year’s festival: Orthodox World in Focus.

Spanning several movies in the festival, Bernheimer sees Orthodox World in Focus as the perfect opportunity to discuss “the other.”

“We’re very interested in the other because the Jews have been the other throughout history,” Bernheimer explains. “Even within our own community, we have a group we don’t understand very well necessarily. ... We may have misconceptions or myths or even negative feelings.”

To assist with selecting potential speakers for Orthodox World in Focus, Bernheimer recruited Yehudis Fishman, a prominent Orthodox teacher in the community, to provide “a cultural context that invites contemplation.”

“I feel that orthodoxy, or traditional practice, is something that’s survived and even thrived through different cultures,” Fishman says. “I think that’s part of the fascination people have.”

As Fishman points out, these movies convey traditional practices through a modern medium. She singles out BJFF’s closing night movie, The Wedding Plan, and particularly how writer/director Rama Burshtein conveys orthodox religious beliefs to a younger generation.

“I think part of [Burshtein’s] motivation is to try to show the meaningfulness and relevance of what otherwise people would think are old-fashioned traditions and don’t have anything to say to the new generation of Jews,” Fishman says.

Be they old or new, each generation can learn something from a movie, even if it’s just a healthy dose of empathy.

“That’s always our goal: to foster understanding,” Bernheimer says.

“And film is a great, non-threatening way to experience other cultures.”

The Longmont Symphony will present the world premiere performance of Mountain Myths, composed by Longmont resident Michael Udow. Top picks for BIFF

Four docs and two dramas to see at this year’s fest

oulder audiences love a good documentary. And from Feb. 22–25, the Boulder International Film Festival (BIFF) returns to help Boulderites scratch the educational itch with a lineup that holds a little something for everyone.

Of the 34 features screening at this year’s festival, 23 are documentaries, including BIFF’s closing night movie, a work in progress from Boulder-based photographer James Balog.

Two Trains Runnin’ What does Balog’s latest hold in store for audiences? is a retrospective Hard to say at this point, but if past results are any indidoc about college friends in search cator, then Balog’s latest is sure to capture the city’s of their heros Skip hearts and minds.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves and jump to the end; there’s an awful lot of good in between that would be a shame to miss. Namely, the best movie screening at BIFF: Faces Places (Feb. 23, 10 a.m., Boulder Theater). Yes, this column has droned on long enough about Agnès Varda and JR’s remarkable road trip/art project, but now Boulder audiences have their chance to see this masterpiece on the big screen and experience this Oscar-nominated doc’s charming and life-affirming sensibility first-hand.

Moving from the French countryside to the Deep South, Two Trains Runnin’ (Feb. 23, 7:15 p.m., Boulder Theater) is a retrospective documentary about a group of college friends who loved the Delta blues so much they packed up and went in search of their heroes: Skip James and Sun House.

The year was 1964, and tracking down two retired musicians from the ’30s was neither an easy nor a welcome task. As the title alludes, there are two narratives at work, the first a recollection of three college buddies working their way through the South, trying to track down their musical idols; the second, the Civil Rights Movement of the mid-’60s. Heading west, we find ourselves basking in the Golden State’s sunshine with a man who saw eternity in a glass of wine, Andre: The Voice of Wine (Feb. 24, 12:15 p.m., First Presbyterian Church).

Directed by Mark Tchelistcheff, the grandnephew of the doc’s subject, Andre recounts the life and work of André Tchelistcheff, one of California’s most influential winemakers.

After fleeing the Russian Revolution in 1917, Tchelistcheff found success in the vineyards of France until Georges de Latour of Beaulieu Vineyards (BV) recruited the Russian refugee to shepherd his Napa Valley vineyards in post-prohibition Boulder Weekly

From those sun-dappled vineyards, we move to Montana and much darker territory with Dark Money (Feb. 25, 2:45 p.m., Boulder Theater). It’s politics, after all, how uplifting could it be?

Directed by Kimberly Reed — who will appear in-person following Sunday’s screening — Dark Money looks at how Montana dealt with the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision, which allows unlimited election donations from completely anonymous donors. Established in 1988, Citizens United is a pro-corporation advocacy Take a look at how Montana dealt group and its shadowy tactics have shaped elections, with the Supreme big and small, ever since. This might seem like rote Court’s Citizens United decision in news to those who keep close eyes on politics, but Dark Money. there are several similarities between Montana and Colorado that makes this doc particularly prescient for local audiences.

Dark Money — like Andre, Two Trains Runnin’ and Faces Places — is a wonderful way to learn about the world around us, but these docs are not the only way.

Often times, the truth is best conveyed through the lens of a scripted movie, as can be seen in Sally Potter’s The Party (Feb. 23, 2:15 p.m., Boulder Theater).

Set in modern-day London and shot in stark black and white, The Party is a rip-roaring collection of backstabbers trying to outdo each other with their own selfishness and entitlement. And it’s a comedy! Racing along at 71 minutes, The Party — both a reference to the dinner party and the political party host Kristin Scott Thomas has recently been elected to — features some of Europe’s finest actors: Timothy Spall, Patricia Clarkson, Emily Mortimer, Cillian Murphy, Bruno Ganz and Cherry Jones, spraying truth, vitriol and comedic pettiness. It’s the kind of movie you watch and secretly hope is a fantasy, but deep The Insult is a film down you know it’s as real as the nose on your face. that will stick with you long after its So it goes for The Insult (Feb. 24, 2:30 p.m., First over.

Directed by Ziad Doueiri and set in Beirut, The Insult begins with an anti-Palestinian Christian accidentally spilling water on a Muslim construction foreman. No apology is given and though the foreman tries to fix the drainpipe, a sudden aggressive outburst elicits a foul and offensive slur. Both men, harboring deep anger, pain and resentment, dig their heels in and slurs become hate, hate becomes violence and the legal system must intervene.

From here, The Insult gives way to a stunning courtroom drama, one that peers beneath the veneer of bigotry and hate, to the horrors of the past. We have all been wronged, the movie posits, but who has been wronged more?

It’s a sneaky film; one that builds piece by piece until its larger objective becomes clear and you can’t help but fall under its spell. Not every movie sticks to the ribs, but The Insult is like peanut butter; you’ll carry this one around for some time. Hell, it might even make you see the world from both sides. What a wonderful thought.

ou probably haven’t had anything like Arcana’s troutchovy toast. It starts with a hearty country bread baked in-house. The crust is deep brown and crunchy, the flesh is moist and dense with abundant air pockets.

Torn eggs and house-made troutchovy, or a kind of cured trout, is piled on top. It’s an incredible texture and flavor combination, with silky eggs and a very understated trout, a little briny, a little funky and a little sweet even. Radish, herb salad and grated beets in vinaigrette finish out the dish. It all makes for something other and better than any toast you’ve ever had. $9.

f you’re looking to kick back in Lyons, Pizza Bar 66 is the place to do it. Dozens of craft beers are available for cheap, and a menu of pizza and pizza-like products is comforting.

One such pizza-adjacent product is the roll — a handcrafted bun made from house-made dough wrapped in filling. The Rancher Roll is loaded with thick chunks of bacon and chicken, and injected with pepper jack. It’s served with a side of ranch. It’s full-on indulgence — the bun itself is sweeter than pizza dough, not as sweet as a cinnamon bun, and the cheese and dressing gild the lily. $12.

An occasional vegan tracks tasty plant-based fast foods I’M NOT A VEGAN

nor a vegetarian. I do enjoy yummy animal proteins, but I often end up going meatless when I’m out. These veggie choices are as much about taste as they are about how much they enhance my general state of wellness. Simply put, I heart falafel.

When I arrived in Boulder in 1976, the meatless options were basically French fries, baked potatoes, hash browns and salad bars (except for the brown rice and beans at the hippie-run Carnival Café). Now, the city boasts an enviable roster of sit-down restaurants featuring meatless cuisine, and most local American and ethnic eateries have vegan or vegetarian dishes on the menu.

However, day-to-day “eating out” often means grabbing something quick at a fast food or fast-casual spot for a lot of us. This is more challenging for vegans, but, at least to start, a recent businessinsider.com article lists 13 dishes at national chains that 42 February 22 , 2018

are “vegan without your having to change anything besides requesting no cheese.”

The less-than-inspiring lineup includes Taco Bell’s bean burrito (pico de gallo replacing dairy products); Burger King’s French toast sticks with syrup (no butter); Subway’s veggie delight sub (no cheese or mayo); and various cheese-less veggie pizzas (Domino’s and Pizza Hut).

At KFC, the vegan fare runs the gamut from corn on the cob (no butter) and green beans to baked beans, potato wedges and house salads (with non-creamy dressing).

In Finland, you can now order a McVegan “burger,” but U.S. McDonald’s patrons choose from black coffee, apple slices, a side salad, and fruit and maple oatmeal (no cream).

The list starts with a false assumption that the lack of animal ingredients is the sole factor vegans consider when choosing a place to eat. What about the chain’s record on sustainability, transparency and humane treatment of farm workers and animals? Do they have drivethru windows that encourage pollution? Besides, do vegBoulder Weekly

ans really want to eat at a chain eatery surrounded by people chomping cheeseburgers?

Colorado’s many homegrown fastcasual chains do a much better job on many levels than these national chains at serving the needs of vegan and vegetarian diners.

At Snarf ’s Sandwiches, all of the vegetarian sandwiches (except for my favorite, eggplant Parmesan) can be served vegan by holding the cheese on the avocado-layered vegetarian or portabello toasted subs. I’m also a fan of the Greek-accented artichoke and feta sub piled with all the veggies.

Eating vegan is even easier at Garbanzo Mediterranean Grill, where plates, wraps, salads and gyros can be made with falafel or marinated portabello mushrooms plus hummus, baba ghanoush, tabbouleh, salad and tahini. I love the warm, fresh pita and the extracrunchy falafel.

The already veggie-friendly Motomaki (an offshoot of Hapa Sushi) recently added two new vegan dishes that can be served as a giant noriwrapped roll or a bowl. The Mean Green includes edamame poke, blanched spinach and other veggies.

I’m especially fond of the new Crispy Eggplant, a zesty, filling combination of panko-breaded eggplant, avocado, grilled asparagus, sesame bean sprouts, spicy sprouts, jalapeño, cilantro and yakiniku sauce.

You can also make your own vegan roll or bowl combining rice, tofu, avocado, various vegetables, kimchi, crispy onion, mango salsa, Japanese dressings and other ingredients.

The mother of all Colorado fast casual operations, Chipotle Mexican Grill, upped its game when it added vegan sofritas: organic tofu braised with chipotle and roasted poblano chilies and spices. It’s such a great flavor you don’t ponder the absence of meat, cheese and sour cream. Build-your-own salads, bowls, burritos or tacos can involve beans, rice, fajita veggies, salsas, guacamole, and, of course, corn chips.

Noodles and Company, another longtime local standard-bearer, has always had a wide selection of plantbased dishes. The vegan roster includes Japanese pan noodle and, minus the cheese, penne rosa, whole grain Tuscan fresca and spaghetti with marinara.

Red Robin isn’t fast or fast-casual but the chain is notable because you can order a reputable gourmet veggie burger with the classic toppings — hold the sauce and cheese — plus regular or sweet potato fries or, best of all, “bottomless” (and butter-less) steamed broccoli.

A final reality check: Vegetarian and vegan fare is much more available now, Boulder Weekly

but according to Datassential, 90 percent of American restaurant menus still include chicken, beef and/or pork dishes.

hen the thousand-year flood hit Boulder County in 2013, the Lyons Fork was not spared.

Water gushed in through the back door and filled the restaurant’s basement with four feet of runoff.

“Ugh,” owner Debbie Anderson says. “It was a mess.”

“It was like a river going across the road,” says her husband and business partner, Wayne, pointing out to Main Street.

The Andersons didn’t have flood insurance, but then again, they weren’t in the flood plain so they didn’t think they’d need it. And so the flood ravaged all their equipment and furnishings in the basement. They had to (literally) eat the shipment of food that came in that week. Yet, Debbie says, it could’ve been worse. A fault in the centuries-old building funneled water away from the main floor.

“There’s this lip as you go back to the bathroom that drives me crazy,” Debbie says. “It slopes down when you go to the bathroom, and I always think somebody’s going to fall, but that’s what saved [the restaurant’s main floor], because it was raised just enough.”

Debbie and Wayne Anderson of Lyons Fork on a serendipitous life in food

by Matt Cortina It was only the latest instance in a long life of serendipity for Debbie and Wayne. It was a perfectly timed meeting that led the two, who had never owned a restaurant, to purchase the building that would become Lyons Fork in the first place.

They were living in Lyons and had recently become jobless. But they bumped into the owner of the historic building on the corner of Main and Highway 36, and “next thing you know the ball’s rolling down the street,” Debbie says.

“The building itself, the location, to me it’s always been the best spot in town,” Wayne says. “It would be like, that sucks they’re not doing anything with it. We just met the owner at the right time and everything fell into place quickly. It wasn’t so much about owning a restaurant as much as, how cool is that place? What could we do with that place?”

And the place is cool. Lyons was founded in 1880, and the building was erected in 1881, originally platted as a saloon. It comes with it’s own legend of a shoot-out and the bullet hole to prove it. It had been a half-hearted restaurant with irregular hours before the Andersons took over, but in a short time, they made it into one of the premier

dining destinations in Boulder County, anchored by a homespun atmosphere, local ingredients and craft beer and spirits.

The dip in the floor was fortuitous, but it was almost like the building preserving itself. The business, however, needed some help after the flood, and in the six months they were closed, Debbie doesn’t remember how they made ends meet.

Eventually, word got around and members of the community rallied to help raise funds for the cleanup and purchase of new equipment and food.

It was an affirmation that the risk they’d taken was appreciated in the community.

Debbie says there were conventional jobs they could’ve taken besides buying a building and opening a restaurant, but the “safe” play isn’t in either of their natures.

“It seems like I’ve always been in entrepreneur mode,” Wayne says. “I don’t know why I do that to myself.”

Probably because the risks have paid off so far.

Wayne moved from Georgia to Boulder in 1990, then to Lyons in 1996. He climbed the ladder at Oskar Blues as the company rapidly grew. He also see LYONS FORK Page 46

moonlighted as a caretaker on a 120-acre farm, despite having never worked on a farm before.

“Greenhorn, man,” Wayne says.

“He almost burned down a couple houses,” Debbie says.

“Pissed off a few neighbors more than once,” Wayne adds.

Yet, again, it worked out. Nowadays, the Andersons have been able to grow produce on the farm that makes its way into the restaurant. They also raise pigs, which sometimes end up on their menu one way or another.

Debbie hadn’t worked on a farm either when she met Wayne. She grew up in Texas and moved to San Diego because she fell in love with the area on a visit and “figured you’re only young once.” She eventually got a job overseeing distribution in Southern California for Stone Brewing. Isn’t it serendipitous then that as Oskar Blues transformed the industry by canning craft beer, the company happened to send Wayne out to meet Debbie to discuss Stone distributing Oskar Blues’ beer?

“She had a great sales pitch,” Wayne says. “I bought the whole thing.”

“Well, I’m the one who bought the farm,” Debbie says.

Thus, Debbie moved to Lyons. They had two kids, and eventually came across the Lyons Fork opportunity. But given their lives of constant reinvention, it was only a matter of time before they had their hands in another pursuit. Three years after opening the restaurant, the Andersons became one-fourth owners of Spirit Hound Distillers in Lyons.

After that, “I had to cut you off,” Debbie says to Wayne. “No more babies. Any babies.”

But again, it worked out. The flood inundated much of the Spirit Hound facility, but they had been previously required to purchase flood insurance on the property.

Little of their product was ruined, and they were partly reimbursed for damages.

And as fortune would have it, the pigs on the Anderson farm like to eat the spent whiskey grain from Spirit Hound, as well as the refuse from the Fork and other restaurants in Lyons.

It’s been said that people shouldn’t work with family. And certainly one would assume that extends to the Andersons, whose pursuits in entrepreneurship come with a unique set of risks and stressors. But they’ve at least started to carve out a groove that enables them to work together efficiently.

“We’ve been trying to figure that one out for the last 10 years,” Wayne says.

“One hard thing being in business together is you don’t get to go home from work.

We go home and talk about the stresses of work, so we’ve been trying hard to not do that as much.”

Wayne says he spends much of his time at Spirit Hound, while Debbie operates Lyons Fork.

“She’s the boss, and she calls me when something’s broken or she needs me,” Wayne says.

“That’s the way we’re trying to go,” Debbie says. “We’re not there yet.”

And so it’s natural to wonder what the next big venture the Andersons will undertake. Wayne says they’re in a good spot now — an acclaimed restaurant, a growing distillery and a manageable farm, their kids able to walk down a dirt road to school. But for all that talk, the evidence suggests stasis is not their style.

“You never know,” Debbie says.

“We’re not necessarily looking for stuff,” Wayne adds, “but the way she and I are, you know, we’ll have an idea and next thing you know, we’ll be doing it.”

Festival season is coming

Here are a few winter and spring beer festivals to get you started

t’s possible the seemingly week-in, week-out slate of 2017 summer beer festivals conditioned you to crave the unique experience of tasting dozens of brews with hundreds of your closest friends. And, now that we’re mired in winter, you may be itching for a brew-haha to get you out of a cold-weather funk.

Luckily, there are a few get-togethers on the horizon to sate your appetite.

The Winter Craft Beer Festival returns to 29th Street in Boulder on March 3 with a slate of local and visiting breweries.

The festival benefits Community Cycles, a nonprofit that recycles, repairs and refurbishes donated bikes and boasts a 2,000-person membership that advocates for better bike transportation options. Last year, the event raised about $4,000 for the group.

Participating breweries include Sanitas, Ska Brewing, Liquid Mechanics, Wibby Brewing and many more. And for those who attended a chilly festival last year, note that the festival has been pushed up in the day, and moved into March to try to mitigate frostbite. Tickets start at $45 for those consuming beer, and are available at wintercraftbeerfestival.com.

On Saturday, March 31, the fifth annual Collaboration Fest takes over the Hyatt Regency Denver at the Colorado Convention Center.

There’s no competition at the Fest, only collaboration between dozens of gifted brewers, resulting in hundreds of unique brews for attendees to taste. You’ll find a number of interesting collaborations, from those between two Boulder County breweries to partnerships of seven or more of the best regional brewers. Some local participants include Grossen Bart, FATE, Very Nice Brewing Co. and Odd13.

Tickets start at $65, available at collaborationfest.com.

Head up to Breckenridge just as ski season comes to a close for their Spring Beer Festival on April 7. Dozens of the best local and national breweries will be in attendance.

The best part is unlimited tasting tickets start at only $35, though $75 gets VIPs in a little early and without wait, plus a collector’s mug, unlimited full-sized pours, a catered lunch and access to a special heated tent. And for the fifth year in a row, Avery engages in its Big Ass Tap Takeover, which brings up to 50 Avery beers to Parry’s Pizza locations across the state. Will Denver host the first U.S. cannabis cafe?

T

wo years ago, in an on-brand move to always be the first at everything when it comes to progressing the cannabis industry, Denver voters passed Initiative 300, the first piece of consumption-based marijuana legislation in the country. The measure created a fouryear pilot program that will permit certain businesses to allow patrons to consume weed on their premises.

Now, all eyes are on Denver as city officials are preparing to launch the nation’s first legal cannabis club.

The first social use permit application was filed by the owners of the Coffee Joint, located in an industrial area on the west side of Denver.

Initiative 300 does not allow clubs to sell marijuana products, but the Coffee Joint plans to charge an entry fee to the space where customers are

allowed to vape and eat edibles.

Amsterdam used to be the weed capital of the world, and you had to travel there if you wanted to legally get stoned in public. It’s interesting that it has taken this long for Colorado to embrace the Dutch coffee shop model, especially considering that marijuana tourism is booming. Still, state laws essentially confine consumption to private residences.

Thousands of tourists visit Colorado every year to legally buy pot, but using it in most hotels, restaurants, bars and clubs is forbidden under both public consumption and general smoking laws, leaving them with nowhere to smoke.

Some Airbnb’s in the area advertise themselves as 420-friendly, but many rental spaces and HOA-regulated condos forbid smoking or any federally illegal drug activity.

As of now, Denver has only received two permit applications, because while 300 comes across as progressive in theory, many proponents fear it’s too restrictive in practice. Smoking any substance indoors is still strictly prohibited by the state, so indoor venues will only allow vaping and edibles. Under the current plan, a permit would cost $1,000 and the business must first obtain a letter of approval from a neighborhood or local business group. Permits would also allow pot smoke in specified outdoor areas, like rooftop patios, but cannabis consumption will remain illegal in public spaces, like sidewalks.

The problem is that too many locations are ineligible because they are within 1,000 feet from schools, child care centers, city pools and recreational

facilities, and drug and alcohol treatment centers. This discourages many budding entrepreneurs since it would push them to the edge of the city, away from heavily trafficked tourist areas. Additionally, the state liquor board prohibits marijuana use at any place with a liquor license, making it impossible for most bars and restaurants to apply. Dispensaries have never been able to allow consumption on their property, which is just as confusing as the fact that these new pot clubs aren’t allowed to sell marijuana products, making it a challenge to figure out how to make a weed cafe lucrative. Instead, the clubs will practice a bring-your-own policy and charge for the space.

Before 300 passed, some businesses and tour companies discovered loopholes in consumption laws by creating mobile smoking lounges inside party buses or creating private, invite-only events focusing on consumption for tourists. But because those fall within a legal gray area, those operations feel slightly sketchy at best and do nothing to contribute to a positive model of coffee shop culture.

Cannabis cafes are, in some ways, the final frontier in the mainstreaming of legalization, because they take marijuana out of people’s homes and into public life. With public-consumption tickets dramatically increasing, as well as the amount of tourists increasingly frustrated with the lack of options where they can actually consume all of the legal pot they purchase, something has to be done.

While operating within its tight restrictions is not ideal for most businesses, 300 could offer many solutions if done right.

Kochs to Sessions: Dial it back on pot

Y

ou don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows,” Bob Dylan warbled in the ’60s, but sometimes you do.

Like when Chris Bianchi, who is a real weatherman (he’s a meteorologist for WeatherNation, not a ’60s rad) wrote a piece for Westword about what the Koch Brothers are saying about Jeff Sessions’ repeal of the Cole Memorandum, and about the war on drugs generally.

Yeah, those Koch Brothers, the ones the local anti-fracking crowd routinely conflates with Beelzebub and Mephistopheles.

Actually, the Brothers Koch are fierce libertarians, as is Mark Holden, the general counsel and senior vice president of Koch Industries. Last month Holden penned a statement that “shares the Koch perspective” on Sessions’ decision. It was posted on the Koch website (news. kochind.com) under the headline “Keep local marijuana laws from going up in smoke.”

The Cole memo, which was issued by the Obama Justice Department, de-prioritized enforcement of federal marijuana laws against users and businesses who followed state law in states that had legalized pot. Sessions repealed it in early January.

The Justice Department and the attorney general are entrusted with “enormous responsibility” when it comes to protecting constitutional rights, Holden wrote, and “this includes the fair and equal application of the law for all citizens, especially as it pertains to the 10th Amendment, which gives states the right to enact and enforce their own laws.”

“That Attorney General Jeff Sessions, a Republican appointee in a Republican administration, is undoing a Democratic appointee’s work from a

Democratic administration is irrelevant,” he said.

“Republicans and Democrats alike have criticized the decision... Koch backs policies that respect individual states’ 10th Amendment rights — especially considering the tremendous progress on criminal justice reform made in statehouses across the country... ” The 10th Amendment doesn’t get a lot of attention these days. It reads as follows: “The powers not

delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the Sates, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.”

The Constitution doesn’t explicitly give the federal government the power to ban or regulate marijuana or any other drug. (The federal marijuana ban and the whole drug war are justified by an increasingly questionable stretch of the commerce clause.)

Nor does the Constitution explicitly ban the states from regulating marijuana. Holden is arguing this

means the states have the power to write and enforce their own laws as far as pot is concerned.

Beyond its defense of state’s rights with regard to marijuana, the statement makes it clear the Kochs don’t have much use for the war on drugs generally: “Resources spent fighting a misguided war on drugs should instead go toward programs for those reentering society, including rehabilitation, treatment and job training. Instead of prosecuting non-violent drug offenders for doing what has already been legalized in half a dozen states and decriminalized in several others, the administration would be better suited working with members of Congress to reform outdated sentencing laws... ” This is a big deal, and not just because the Kochs are among the Republican Party’s largest financial supporters. (They’ve said their political action committees intend to spend up to $400 million during the coming election cycle.)

Their support for marijuana legalization is part of their broader effort to bring about sentencing reform on both the state and federal level, an issue Holden devotes a substantial amount of his time to, and out of a concern about the over-regulation and over-criminalization of American life.

Marijuana legalization is going to be an issue in this fall’s election. Democrats have figured out that supporting legalization can help them and it’s probably dawning on a lot of Republicans that opposing it isn’t going to win them many voters.

The Koch statement offers Republican candidates an ideological path to climb down from the Party’s increasingly indefensible anti-legalization position, if they have the wit to take it.

The move comes after special counsel Robert S. Mueller issued indictments for several Russian nationals for meddling in the U.S. election by fomenting angst on social media sites.

Right-wing users instantly claimed Twitter was trying to silence conservative voices. Voices like “Hillary could’ve prevented Parkland, Sandy Hook shootings… possibly 9/11,” and “Alexander Hamilton and Jesus gave me the right to carry AR-15s, SNOWFLAKE!”

When told that they only lost followers with Russian IP addresses and a history of bot-like posts, one conservative Twitter user was quoted as saying, “What, next yer gonna tell me my friends only like me because I won the lottery?

And that there’s other food besides beef to eat for dinner even though that’s EXACTLY what the commercial from 15 years ago said? And that by widening pre-existing schisms in the political beliefs of Americans through the use of inflammatory social media postings, a foreign power that is a decades-old enemy was able to subvert our collective trust in democracy and the free press? SNOWFLAKE!” When reached for comment, the ghost of Thomas Jefferson said, “You know that thing about ‘all men are created equal’ that I wrote? Yeah, I, uh, take that back. Y’all are on your own now.”

OK... WELL SO WHAT IF THEY’RE FAKE? Alright, so we all knew that a bunch of the accounts on Twitter weren’t actually real people. In fact, some researchers estimate that up to 15 percent of Twitter accounts are bots. So you would think that when Twitter — in its way-the-hell-too-late effort to protect our democracy from Russia — decided to block and otherwise get rid of these fake, non-human accounts, that everybody would have been grateful.

But Conservatives and Trump supporters have gone nuts claiming that Twitter should leave the bots in place.

And you always wondered who bought all those blow-up dolls instead of getting a real girlfriend. But that’s another Trump-follower subject we’ll explore another day.

What is truly disturbing about this reaction among “conservatives” (quotes because we can’t help but think George Will is not in this group) is that even though they know these blocked bots are controlled by Russians who want to undermine our democracy, they still don’t care.

When we said Trump’s supporters were completely unshakable in their allegiance to the man, we never considered that they would stick by him even if he’s proven to be a Russian controlled puppet put in place by Moscow with the intent of destroying our country. Who are these people?
