ere in America the word “fact” has a straightforward, rather obvious meaning: Truth, reality, something that actually

exists.

But we now find ourselves transplanted to a new, odd country — “Trumplandia.” Here, the factuality of known facts is being called into question by the highest civil authority in the land: The White House. (In fact, with all truths suddenly open to presiBoulder Weekly

Consider The Donald’s furious tweet in January after actress Meryl Streep called him out for having mocked the physical disabilities of a reporter. “I never ‘mocked’ a disabled reporter,” he snapped — even though millions saw him on TV and videos doing exactly that. This inconvenient fact led Kellyanne Conway, Trump’s official White House explainer, to castigate reporters for misinterpreting Donnie’s reality: “You always want to go by what’s coming out of his mouth rather than what’s in his heart.”

Stranger yet, the Trumpster couldn’t even control his convulsive ego on the solemn day of his inauguration. He claimed that the crowd he drew was the largest in history — despite obvious photographic and body-count proof that his crowd was

much smaller than the one drawn to Barack Obama’s swearing-in.

Enraged by this fact, His Majesty the President sent his sad sack press secretary to scold reporters, citing a mess of statistics meant to “prove” that Trump’s crowd was the biggest ever.

Unfortunately, those numbers were quickly shown to be false — i.e., “lies.”

This embarrassment brought out Chief Explainer Conway again, insisting that the bogus numbers tossed out by the White House were not falsehoods, but “alternative facts.” Welcome to the alternative universe of Trumplandia.

n response to President Trump’s executive order on Jan. 27, Colorado resettlement agencies, local organizations, refugee leaders and community members urge Colorado’s congressional delegation to demand restoration of the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program without limitations on refugees’ religion or country of origin.

“We are demanding continued commitment to our nation’s defining tenet of welcoming those suffering persecution and violence. Refugees have consistently entered the United States since World War II; halting this tradition breaks our nation’s promise to alleviate the global refugee crisis,” said Melissa Theesen, managing director of ECDC African Community Center.

This executive order pauses refugee resettlement, grinding refugee processing to a halt. Each step of the refugee security check process is time sensitive, so suspending processing means that refugees will be pulled off of planes, families who are anticipating [the arrival of ] their loved ones are devastated, and communities across the nation that have planned for refugees to arrive are left in limbo. This interruption forces refugees who were set to arrive in the United States today to wait months and even years to go through fingerprinting, interviews, health screenings and multiple security screenings yet again, all while their lives are in danger.

Among those impacted are Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) holders — Iraqis and Afghans who served the U.S. military as interpreters or otherwise supported the work of the U.S. government in Iraq and Afghanistan. These individuals, and their families, have been threatened and persecuted as a result of this service. see GUEST COLUMN Page 7

Jill Fricker, executive director of Colorado African Organization (CAO), was reminded of the impact this decision has on our community right here in Colorado. “This morning I sat with a woman from Somalia who has been awaiting the arrival of her husband,” Fricker said. Her husband, also originally from Somalia, has been in a refugee camp in Uganda navigating the vetting process for the last two years. “Today she cried and asked me, ‘What will happen, will I see him again?’” Fricker added.

The executive order reduces the United States’ refugee admissions ceiling from 110,000 to 50,000 for federal fiscal year 2017, breaking the nation’s promise to refugees and abdicating the United States’ leadership role on human rights and refugee protection during a global refugee crisis of more than 21 million refugees.

Refugees are already subject to “extreme vetting.” In fact, they are the most heavily vetted individuals entering our country, going through biometric screening, multiple in-person interviews and a dozen additional security checks in a process that takes 18-36 months on average.

“We urge the new administration to quickly learn more about the existing process from the expertise in U.S. government agencies, specifically the Department of Homeland Security and Department of State,” said Jennifer Wilson, executive director of the International Rescue Committee in Denver. “Refugees are fleeing the violent extremism our country is trying to defeat. Shutting the door puts lives at risk and does nothing to make us safer. It further harms innocent people — mothers, daughters, fathers and sons — who are in need of a safe, peaceful and secure home where they are free from discrimination. It is irresponsible, immoral and un-American.”

“Providing a home for refugees has been at the core of what makes us Americans since our country’s founding,” said Paula Schriefer, president and CEO of Spring Institute. “We urge our members of Congress to restore policies in which refugees are not turned back because of their religious beliefs or because the countries they flee are particularly dangerous.”

“Since 1980, Colorado has welcomed nearly 70,000 refugees and other populations of humanitarian concern from countries all over the world. Our economy and community has benefited from the contributions of refugees, employers in all sectors Boulder Weekly

have hired refugees, members of the community have volunteered their time to support them, and they have become full participants in our society,” said Frank Anello, director of Project Worthmore.

Colorado resettlement agencies, local organizations and refugee leaders stand with our refugee brothers and sisters, those who are in refugee camps and

urban situations seeking protection, and those who are here and desperately waiting to be reunited with their family members overseas. The United States is a country of immigrants with a long, proud history of providing safe refuge for the world’s most vulnerable people fleeing conflict and persecution. We reject any action that undermines this tradition.

D

onald Trump may go down in history as the next Abraham Lincoln.

No, really. And all because of California.

California is seriously thinking about doing the one thing that could force President Trump not just to act Presidential but to govern in a manner that would be positively Lincolnesque.

Secede.

Last week, backers of a California secessionist movement calling itself Yes California Independence (aka Calexit) got the green light from the California Secretary of State to begin circulating an initiative petition. If passed, the initiative would be the first step in a twostep process that would end with California declaring its independence from the United States.

The initiative would repeal the clause of the California state constitution that declares “California is an inseparable part of the United States of America, and that the United States Constitution is the supreme law of the land” (step one). It would also authorize a second statewide vote on actual secession in March 2019 (step two).

Passage would require at least half the state’s registered voters casting ballots and at least 55 percent of them voting in favor of independence.

Supporters need to collect 585,407 signatures by July 25 to get their proposal on the November 2018 ballot.

So are these guys serious? And do they actually have a chance of getting their proposal on the ballot?

They are and they do.

“We think it’s going to be quite easy for us to make the sell,” Louis Marinelli, president of Yes California Independence, told a reporter for CNBC. “California is a different place and has its own culture, its own history, its own identity, its own worldview, and its own ideology in a large respect,” he said. “So we would feel better off if we can set our own destiny, set our own path forward and not be connected to a lot of these obsolete policies of the American system.”

That sounds a lot like what folks in South Carolina were saying in the 1850s.

But is there actually any serious support for secession in the state?

There is, and it’s growing. Fast.

According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll, 32 percent of Californians support seceding from the United States — up from 20 percent in 2014.

The poll was conducted before Trump took office and started issuing executive orders. Chances are that by now Trump Derangement Syndrome has reached pandemic proportions in California. What better way for hyperventilating progressives to make a “statement” than by signing the Calexit petition?

Signing the petition isn’t just a catharsis. When you sign, you tacitly join “The Resistance.” And being part of “The Resistance” will be the cool, hip, radical chic thing to do. And before long everyone will be signing on with “The Resistance” by signing the petition.

And if the petition comes in with a couple million signatures instead of the 585,407 minimum, the movement will take on a life of its own.

And if the initiative passes, the secession movement will go to the polls in 2019 with a population that, at a minimum, is ideologically potentiated to embrace secession.

And if it passes, what happens then?

The supporters of secession movement say they will ask the U.S. government and the American people to sign off on their exit.

Their website says, “We advocate for peaceful secession from the United States by use of an independence referendum to establish a mandate, followed by a nationwide campaign to advocate in support of a constitutional exit from the Union.”

So what could possibly go wrong?

Uh, Donald Trump isn’t exactly the sort of guy who’s inclined to stand by and let the Union disintegrate on his watch.

So he might start by asking “What would Abraham Lincoln do?”

And the ghost of Abe Lincoln would materialize in the Oval Office and say, in so many words, “Preserve the freaking Union by any and all means necessary! If you let the La La Landians leave, more will follow and the whole country will fall apart. You volunteered for this job, buster. Now stand and deliver.”

the Muslims now are feeling a little bit concerned with their place in society because now they have been put under a spotlight for no fault of their own.”

Since the executive action was signed, Ally says many of the Muslim international students at the center in Golden probably won’t be going home for the upcoming summer holiday, regardless of which country they are from.

“This executive action has really stoked a lot of undue fear in the American populace,” Ally says. “If they would actually go out and meet some Muslims, they would see that these fears are unfounded.”

Since opening in 1999, the ICG has only had one major incident of concern.

Following an event at the mosque to welcome a new baby in May 2016, they received a threatening email from one of the non-Muslim guests. In part, it read: “I was tempted to be violent and confrontational at the Islamic center ... I would wager I was the only armed man at the center. Why is mass violence so tempting? In my pockets I carry two extra magazines~ even so I would run out of bullets before you ran out of Muslims.”

Local law enforcement contacted the man and the Islamic Center hasn’t had any problems with the individual since.

But on Tuesday, Jan. 30., discriminatory cartoon booklets published by an organization that has been identified as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center were left on cars parked at the ICG. Ally says he hopes these cartoons aren’t being distributed anywhere else, but if they are, he also hopes the public realizes it’s not Muslims who are spreading hate. “We wouldn’t put out booklets that would be hateful to anyone,” he says.“It’s really silly. I don’t know why they put it on a Muslim’s car because we know that [they are] incorrect.”

The same day, the Jewish Community Center of Boulder was evacuated after receiving a bomb threat over the phone. According to the ADL, dozens of Jewish Community Centers ( JCC) in 20 states have received similar threats in the past several weeks and the group, committed to fighting anti-Semitism, issued a security advisory to Jewish institutions following the threats on Tuesday.

“This has been happening at JCCs across the country for the last several weeks,” says Susan Rona, spokesperson for Boulder’s JCC, “and so we were totally prepared for it.”

Other entities around the state, however, aren’t as prepared.

“The mosque is such a vulnerable place for people to be. In schools and all workplaces you have lockdown measures, and no mosques that I know of have measures such as these,” says Dr. Ayman Oweidah, a Canadian citizen who moved to Colorado last year for a post-doctoral fellowship at Anschutz Medical Campus.

Originally from Palestine, he moved to Quebec when he was 10, and knows of connections in his community who have been personally affected by the shootings last Sunday. (For more from Oweidah, see sidebar) Oweidah’s warnings that many places are vulnerable and ill-prepared for potential attacks seems well founded. A refugee-services building in Aurora wasn’t even evacuated after bomb-threats were found on the premises on Thursday, Jan. 26. The Mango House opened three years ago as a shared-space for refugee services, financed in large part by the building’s owner P.J. Parmar and his medical practice. Parmar says the nonprofits and businesses in Mango House serve former refugees from Nepal, Burma, Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Congo and Rwanda, among other places.

“That includes a good percentage of Muslims,” he says.

The incident at Mango House began when an employee found two identical notes, one in the parking lot, and one in the stairwell that read, “Were (sic) gonna blow up all of you refugees!” The police were alerted and swept the building, although it was never evacuated.

The following day, Parmar says a man with a mask drove by his building directing a sign at some of the Muslim youth hanging around outside the building. They felt the sign was threatening and Mango House is still working with law enforcement on the incident.

And yet, despite all of the political rhetoric, threats and discrimination in recent Boulder Weekly

months, it seems these examples of hate and racism have mainly served to galvanize the general population in support of the affected communities and institutions.

“In the last three months, non-Muslim Golden residents have expressed their strong solidarity with us through emails, cards, flowers, phone messages, and even by delivering flowers and home-made cookies to the Islamic Center,” Ally says. “Our members are genuinely grateful for the persistent support and understanding that we have experienced.”

On Saturday, Jan. 28, the ICG had more than 150 people at an open house to celebrate the opening of a new facility. Ally says it’s the largest crowd to visit the mosque to date.

The ICB has also seen an outpouring of support over the last week and the spokesperson (whose name was withheld) says the group expects their upcoming open house on Feb. 19 to be its largest yet.

“The amount of support we have gotten from the larger community is unimaginable,” he said in his email. “In fact I have met some awesome, kind-hearted souls over the last couple of days and friendships to cherish have been established. It is due to the recent events ever since the election that many social gatherings between the Muslim Community and the larger community in Boulder have come to life.”

“We are at a tipping point in American society where allies are coming out and really supporting us,” Ben-Masoud from the Northglenn mosque says. He cites support from local government and state representatives, saying he even received a call from an imam in Greeley who said Republican U.S. Rep. Ken Buck (CO-4th District) would like to meet with Muslim leaders in February.

“And it’s our job to really welcome that and reach our hand out to other vulnerable communities, Latino communities, the rise in anti-Semitism right now, communities who are going through the same things we are going through,” he says.

Imam Ben-Masoud welcomes coalition building, saying they are currently seeking support for draft legislation that aim to protect Colorado residents by prohibiting the state from providing information to the federal government regarding race, ethnicity, national origin, immigration status or religious affiliation for any “illegal or unconstitutional purpose.” This includes any form of national registry, tracking program or interment of any group based on these indicators. The Ralph Carr Freedom Defense Act is sponsored by Colorado State Rep. Joe Salazar (D-Thornton) and honors the 1940s Republican governor who decried the executive order to place Japanese Americans in internment camps during World War II. And although there has been some concern amongst the community at Mango House, Parmar says all of the entities are working together to support each other and the people they serve. And since the threats last week, they have had several financial and volunteer offers to help them in their work.

“We’re trying to find a way to respond, to harness that enthusiasm, which is unfortunate why it’s coming, but it’s great it’s there,” Parmar says. “I think a lot of these people are wanting to get involved in a broader sense, and that’s fantastic.”

ince moving to Colorado from Quebec, Canada, early last year, my family and I have been fortunate to meet wonderful people who contributed to our love for Colorado and its people. Every myth we had about moving to the U.S. during the fear-mongering campaign of the U.S. elections were laid to rest by the people we met. But one fear kept resonating with me. That fear accompanied me every time I went to the mosque with my child. On those occasions, I couldn’t help but think of the possibility of a shooter taking aim at the worshippers. At the end of each prayer I would hug my child and walk him to the playground in the mosque’s courtyard. Until this past Sunday, I could never imagine that I would share those feelings with my child.

On Sunday, Quebec witnessed the horrific and barbaric act of a shooter taking aim at vulnerable worshippers in the mosque. Some of those who died were known to many of my friends and behind every casualty was a bigger-than-life story and a dream of a better tomorrow. Their dreams have been shattered and will be buried in the midst of the agony and fear that remains with their grieving families and the Muslim community. Although the shooter’s motive has yet to be revealed, there are thousands of alarming remarks being made in social media that only add fuel to a fire that has gone wild.

Statements that further instigate hatred towards Muslims are alive and well on social media. The systemic spread of Islamophobia is undoubtedly fuelled by policies and political statements that take direct aim at Muslims. Although it is commonly said what doesn’t break us, makes us stronger, the reality is that a large number of people do not consider themselves part of “us,” rather part of “them.” Many will celebrate policies that target Muslims whether abroad or at home.

Yet, there is a way forward and many have begun to walk that road. The women’s marches and recent airport protests are great examples of solidarity and the fight for justice that this country and its people value and embrace. It is through these marches and events of solidarity that I will begin to tell my child about my emotions and show him where change begins.

either house of Congress pulled any punches as they kicked off the legislative body’s 115th session on Tuesday, Jan. 3; the Senate set to work introducing legislation to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA), while the House presented an ill-fated attempt to gut an independent congressional ethics office.

That same day, the House set forward its own motion to repeal the ACA, as well as one that would annul the Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990, along with a proposal to end U.S. membership in the United Nations. Both chambers introduced bills that would end federal funding to Planned Parenthood.

It was a busy and unsurprisingly partisan first day Joel Dyer for the Republican-controlled Congress.

But amid the flurry of business, the real pièce de résistance for the House of Representatives was a piece of legislation that would place Congress in charge of approving all major regulations put forth by federal agencies — the same Congress that’s caused a government shutdown 12 times in the last 36 years due to an inability to pass a budget, the one that employs members who want to dismantle the office that investigates their ethical conduct, would be in charge of understanding and then authorizing every major regulation suggested by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the dozens of other federal agencies tasked with protecting the health and welfare of U.S. citizens.

Using a marginally clever bit of wordplay, the Regulations from the Executive in Need of Scrutiny (REINS) Act masquerades as a useful piece of legislation that will “rein in” governmental overreach, cut red tape, eradicate irrelevant and costly rules, and empower Congress — the “people’s branch” of government — to do so.

In practice, REINS would require both houses of Congress to approve any agency regulation that would impose at least $100 million a year in costs to the economy. If Congress fails to approve a regulation within 70 days, the rule becomes invalid and never sees the light of day.

Though it’s touted as a way to quash bureaucracy, REINS is intended to clear a path for the oil and gas industry and Wall Street to run roughshod over the American public — and the bill is already one-third of the way to the finish line, having passed through the House, 237 to 187, on Jan. 5. It’s now on its way to the Senate, and if it passes there, to the Oval Office.

REINS isn’t a new proposal, first surfacing in the Senate in 2011, where South Carolina Republican Jim DeMint introduced it. The bill has been reintroduced every session since, predominately in the House.

Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO 2nd District) has voted against REINS each time it’s passed through the House over the last six years because he says it prevents the federal government from doing the most fundamental part of its job: protecting people.

“It would basically completely tie up our government and consumer protection efforts in red tape, because every type of environmental protection and food and water protection, and everything else we do to protect people’s health and welfare would be ... brought to Congress for every detail,” he says.

While it’s Congress’ job to task agencies with their mission, REINS purposefully ignores logistics, Polis says: “[Federal agencies] can’t possibly come under legislative management on every single detail or they’ll never be able to get their job done; Congress simply can’t hold that many votes and members of Congress can’t cast that many votes with every little detail and every thing every agency is supposed to do to protect health and welfare.”

Mark Squillace, a professor of law at the University of Colorado Boulder, provides a bit of math to back up Polis’ logistical concerns.

“Oh God, the numbers of volumes [of regulations],” he says. “There are 50 titles in the Code of Federal Regulations, and many of those titles have multiple volumes; if you look at just the EPA Title 40 of the regulations, it’s probably a dozen volumes itself.”

A fact sheet produced by the Natural Resource Defense Council (NRDC) estimates that REINS would bring as many as 100 additional measures to the congressional floor each session.

There’s no lack of industry financing and gladhanding at play in an effort to get REINS on the books. Koch Industries began lobbying for the REINS Act in 2010, according to lobbying disclosure reports obtained by DeSmogBlog. Quickly thereafter, and ever since then, the energy industry joined in, most recently en mass through the American Petroleum Institute (API) and the Western Energy Alliance.

“It shouldn’t be any surprise that the energy indus-

try would want to escape the protections that President Obama laid out through the EPA and Clean Power Plan rule,” Polis says. “Trump is already reversing many of those, but what the energy industry wants is to prevent any future president from protecting our environment.”

But environmental protections aren’t the only regulations threatened by REINS. “You name it,” says David Goldston, director for government affairs at NRDC, and a former Republican staffer on Capital Hill for more than 20 years. “Think of any problem that could arise ... a new foodborne illness appears; banks come up with some new instrument like they did with the ones that led to the collapse during the great recession and the government wants to protect people from that. Being able to get protections from any of those kinds of assaults on the public would be next to impossible to put in place under this law.”

Goldston calls REINS “one of the most radical — without exaggeration — legislative measures in American history.” He and CU professor Squillace agree that the most disturbing part of REINS is a provision added just this year by House Republicans.

“It’s a provision that essentially says that every year for 10 years, each agency is supposed to submit to Congress 10 percent of their regulations so that after that 10-year period, every single existing regulation will have been sent to the Congress,” Squillace explains. “And for any major rules in those packages [those that would impose $100 million or more on the economy], they are no longer rules unless Congress affirmatively adopts them as law. That would likely wipe out massive parts of our current regulatory law, and that would fundamentally change the nature of our government in ways we’ve not seen since before the New Deal.

“This is a big deal,” he adds.

There is considerable concern that REINS will pass through Congress and make its way to the president’s desk this year considering the historic control Republicans have over all three branches of government, but Squillace says he believes the Senate will mount an effective offensive, perhaps using the filibuster. If REINS passes, however, Squillace wonders what he will teach in his one of his courses that focuses on the regulatory process — “a lot of time on the REINS Act,” he surmises.

REINS is only one of a number of proposed bills looking to “cut” regulatory red tape this session: The Midnight Rules Relief Act and the Regulatory Accountability Act of 2017 are also on the table.

But Goldston calls REINS “the most extreme, the most devastating, the most radical.”

“Again, the fact that this is the [bill House Republicans] made their signature bill shows what they like to do,” he says. “They like to call these things regulatory reform. This is not remotely about reforming the system; this is about shutting it down.”

The business of living small and staying mobile

B

y the time Dave Walsh built out his third van, he had reached a turning point. What had begun as a single backyard project to transform a van into a year-round livable unit was becoming Walsh’s business.

That business: converting Sprinter vans (and similar models, like Dodge Promasters and Ford Transits) into custom-built, solar-powered homes on wheels.

Without meaning to, he now finds himself with a queue of clients, a workspace in Denver and two employees. It’s not quite where he’d expected to be.

“If you would have asked me a year ago, ‘You think you’re going to be building vans for people in a year?’ I would have said, ‘No! I’m gonna be in my van traveling,’” Walsh says.

That’s part of his edge in this niche industry. Not only does he come from a family of carpenters and mechanics, but he designed, built out and lived in his own solar-powered Sprinter for a year before coming back to a more settled lifestyle with an apartment in Boulder.

“Van life,” as Walsh calls it, is about living small, staying mobile and using less energy — like the “tiny house on wheels” movement, only tinier, and with more emphasis on the wheels. His van, named “Betty White,” replaced the energy footprint of his house and his vehicle with 150 watts of solar panels on the roof, which powered the interior LED lights and small electronics, and an engine. It was a way to live closer to nature, basing himself in one remote destination after another, parking on Forest Service roads or public lands close to mountain biking trails and other outdoor play. Van life was also, somewhat ironically, a way to stay connected to community, “because you can only spend so much time in your tiny little van.”

Now, he spends his days helping others experience van living. Of course, Walsh had a life before van life.

The native Rhode Islander spent four years in the Marines before landing in San Diego, where he spent eight years, had a career and was married.

“I was chasing the American dream,” he says.

“We moved to Colorado, had two dogs, a brand new car — it was like, great, this is awesome.”

But following his divorce, Walsh dramatically changed directions. After losing his job in Boulder’s IT sector, he started a handyman business, scaled back his high-cost lifestyle and focused on intentionally living with less. He soon found himself building Betty White, and embarking on the journey that led him here.

The vans he builds now look a lot like Betty White, combining custom woodworking and design with appliances designed for sailboats and RVs. There’s a steel-framed, raised platform bed in the back, mounted to the wall. The walls and ceiling are fully insulated and covered in custom wallboards and paneling. All the vans are wired for solar with battery storage, although one of his customers has opted not to put panels on the roof. That’ll change moving forward, Walsh says. In the future, all vans will include rooftop solar, and thus be equipped to power the lights and small plug loads when the van is off, using solar energy to keep the batteries charged rather than having to run the engine to do so (or to bring along a generator, as some “van lifers” do).

There’s a sink with a collapsible faucet and removable top, and a small pump to draw water from one jug underneath and drain it into another, both small enough to fill and empty by hand. There’s a fridge that doubles as a seat, alongside a fixed bench.

Walsh spent much of January building out just such a van for another local company, Native Campervans in Denver, who’ll rent it out to adventurers wanting to try the lifestyle for a weekend or so.

Every van is unique and Walsh is committed to customizing each buildout, even as he balances the need to streamline his workflow as the business grows, while trying to keep costs low.

“People moving into a van aren’t moving into a van because they’re rich,” he says. “They’re doing it because it makes sense.”

They’re trading in rent, or a mortgage, and a utility bill for gasoline at the pump. They’re removing one of their biggest carbon footprints — a building to live in — from their lives, at least temporarily, and making their means of mobility their shelter.

For now, Walsh will have to live van life vicariously, staying put as his business takes off. But it’s worth it, so that more people experience the benefits of the lifestyle, not just in their pockets but in their community.

‘Uncharted Lines’ globe trots in search of the world’s best bouldering problems

ntering the lobby of the Boulder Theater on the evening of Jan. 25 for the premiere of Uncharted Lines, a new feature film by the American boulderer Paul Robinson, the atmosphere felt akin to a carnival.

There were raffle tickets, booths with spinning wheels, snacks galore and freebies every which way. The mood was decidedly celebratory. After two years of filming and editing, Robinson was finally ready to share his baby: a chronicle of the world’s best boulderers traveling to pristine corners of the world to pioneer the hardest and most aesthetic climbs they could muster.

That two-year journey has taken Robinson from Siberia to Spain, Zimbabwe to Australia.

But Colorado is where the project was born.

Robinson went to school at the University of Colorado Boulder for art history and studio arts.

While a student, he was already one of the strongest boulderers in the country and he sought a way to combine his chosen passions of climbing and art.

“I was around a lot of photographers and videographers at the time,” he says, “and I was super interested in learning the process so I could even-

tually tell the stories of boulder problems.”

After school he made a handful of independent films, but his inexperience and amateurism was evident; the edits were rarely more than straightforward bouldering footage set to music. As he ruminated on this, the idea for Uncharted Lines emerged: a film to explore the process of developing new climbing areas in unexplored places.

Sitting with climbing partners below a boulder one day, not really climbing, Robinson says the title surfaced organically. “We came up with Uncharted Lines, and it just felt like it fit perfectly.”

“I’ve tried to create much more of a story” with Uncharted Lines, Robinson says. “It’s not just boulders and scenic shots — there’s much more of a story and a sense of place within the environments where we are.”

And the vistas on display are stunning.

Sweeping pull-away shots to the tune of songs

like Kishi Bashi’s “Ha Ha Ha Pt. II” and Of Monsters and Men’s “Dirty Paws” show boulder strewn landscapes in Alcaniz, Spain, and Chimanimani National Park, Zimbabwe; the former all sun and warm colors, the latter full of cool greys and greens.

The film is fairly serious in tone, but moments of levity are aplenty: Chris Nayton Rosales Sharma (perhaps the most famous climber in the world) laughing at his inability to get off the ground on one route; Daniel Woods goofing off with his friends while working on Creature From the Black Lagoon, a new V16 he established and one of the hardest boulder problems in the world.

And these moments are vital to the story being told; amid the sometimes self-important voice-overs about the journey to find new areas and rocks, they show that the prosee PROBLEM Page 20

cess of route development for these guys is an unparalleled joy.

Even with the breadth of locations the film covers, others were left on the cutting room floor. Robinson says that one of his favorite new boulder problems from the entire Uncharted Lines journey was Golden Year, a V12 in the Grampians, Australia.

“Definitely one of the best first ascents of my life,” he says. “Long, tall, hard. Spent two days working on it. It was perfect. And you don’t really find that many perfect lines out there.”

Despite routes like Golden Year and a fair bit of footage from Australia, the scenes from Down Under just didn’t fit in the final narrative. It was hard enough to make Zimbabwe, Spain, the Southern and Western U.S., and Siberia all fit in one film.

“During the editing process, it kind of just felt like we’d never be able to stitch all the pieces together and create this final story,” Robinson says. “Between cataloging footage and editing, taking a massive amount of data and putting it together into a cohesive one-hour piece has definitely been difficult.”

Though originally from New Jersey, Robinson has made Boulder his adopted home and having the film finish with a section in Colorado and the

Western U.S. was important to him.

After 45 minutes of soaring drone shots of Zimbabwe, Spain and Siberia, the audience finds itself watching the climbers hike through wooded Western states. “It’s fairly simple,” Robinson says, “but the idea behind that was ‘We’re coming home.’”

And the audience on Jan. 25 was clearly appreciative of this narrative choice. When non-superstar, hometown climbers graced the screen in the final Colorado/Wyoming chapter — Hunter Damiani and Meagan Martin, in particular — huge cheers erupted.

Robinson is hoping he can ride the momentum from the premiere and put the film in front of as many viewers as possible. There are already screenings booked in California, Tennessee and Alabama, and the film is available to purchase for streaming and digital download at UnchartedLinesFilm.com.

If all goes well and the film is able to recoup its budget — much of it fronted

by Robinson and his pals — he has ideas for a sequel.

“You can only fit so much into an hour-and-10-minute film,” he says.

“We wanted to go to South America.

Definitely some potential options down there for the future. Hopefully we can do another.”

n the Spring of 2016, artist William Singer got a flat tire on his way out of Detroit.

Waiting for the tow, he sat on the hood of his car thumbing through the Instagram feed on his phone and thinking about a promise he’d made to himself a few years back — by the time his 30th year came to a close, he’d land a big exhibition for his paintings. With just a few months left to realize his goal, deflated on the side of the road, Singer realized it was time to see what his dreams were made of.

Just then he saw a post from Boulder Creative Collective (BCC) — a brand new, small startup in Colorado with a mission to support artists and develop their markets. He’d heard of BCC before, from a friend of a friend, and so on a whim sent them an email to rent their last remaining studio for the summer. The next day he packed his bags, bought a train ticket to Colorado and headed west.

isn’t where artists typically come to test the artistic waters. For one thing, it’s expensive to live here and it’s getting more expensive all the time.

The connection between gentrification and declining art communities is a familiar tale across

paratively low arts and culture spending, which is among the most telling indicators for the health of a local arts market. For every $33 peer cities spend on arts and culture per capita, Boulder spends just $6.

To amend the imbalance, the City of Boulder’s Office of Arts and Culture recently finalized plans to more than double current spending to $2 million by 2024.

Although it’s a step in the right direction, it’s one that will take a long time to affect the livelihoods of the thousands of artists living and working in Boulder.

Without city subsidized venues, districts, fairs and grants, artists living in Boulder lack access to sales channels, public and private. In 2016, four dedicated arts spaces in the city closed their doors due to declining consumer spending.

Despite the undernourished market, the City of Boulder ranks high for the number of self-identified artists, with 9 percent of the population working in creative arts. The market might be

struggling, but not for a lack of potential.

Co-founders of BCC, Addrienne Amato and Kelly Cope Russack, recognized the steep challenge facing art in Boulder and also the depth of the city’s artistic talent. Instead of waiting for the problem to self-correct, they took it upon themselves to do something about it.

“Who knows, one of our kids might grow up to want to be a poet or an artist, and I would like that to be a possibility for them, right here, in Boulder,” Cope Russack says. “We don’t live in Fort Collins, we don’t live in Denver, we don’t live in Aspen [or] New York, we live here. If I am going to raise children here, I want those artistic cultures and communities to exist here too.”

So, in April 2016, they acquired a warehouse in East Boulder and worked with local designer Barrett Rogers to build out a dozen or so studios surrounding a central exhibition space in a style that embodied the character of the project and the artistic community it sought to create.

“We knew it needed to be fluid and changeable, to grow and change along with BCC, so we built studios around the perimeter and kept the central exhibition space open,” Rogers says. “We decided to use more interesting materials than you would in a typical build, like big glass refrigerator doors and discarded pieces of wood. It’s a simple plan, but the materials add unexpected patters and details. I’m an artist and I guess that’s the way I work — I always try to use things for different situations than what they are otherwise used for.”

Just 10 months later, the studios are full — housing photographers, paper makers, painters, writers, designers — and the exhibition space, replete with moving walls, is always changing to accommodate rotating events and exhibitions. Over the summer, it was one of these studios that William Singer called home and it was there, working 10 or more hours a day, that he turned his amateur ambitions into a full-blown artistic career.

He didn’t do it alone. BCC provides professional development both one-on-one and in the form of open critiques, bolstering artists with crucial feedback to their works and processes. Within the walls of BCC, artists are not only finding themselves but one another, maturing from separated individuals into an artistic movement.

“It’s been rewarding to see that this person is connected to this person by us,” Amato says. “Not to say that we deserve some kind of recognition, but now that we are beginning to see those patterns emerge, we are taking a step back to figure out how to use that network more strategically and intentionally.”

Developing the market means hosting exhibitions and bringing buyers into the fold of the burgeoning community. To do this, Amato says the key is to bring “art into unexpected places.” They do this through programs like Art on Loan, where businesses sign on to have BCC curate art in their spaces for a year at a time, not only providing crucial exposure for artists, but also bringing art into the corporate cultures of Boulder.

More than anything, Amato and Cope Russack agree that way forward means endorsing the value of art and interweaving it into the Boulder way of life.

“I just read this article about a woman art collector,” Amato says. “She talks about her favorite piece, a Modigliani. She loves it because she sits and drinks her tea in front of it everyday. It’s not just the art, it’s that it’s a part of her daily ritual and that’s what we are trying to do with BCC — to get art in front of people, to interweave artists into our daily lives, to build a culture of art.”

Amato has her own version of a Modigliani hanging on her wall, a painting by William Singer, the traveling painter from Detroit who came to BCC looking for his dreams and left living them. Just a week after he turned 31, he booked his first major exhibition in Savannah, Georgia. Opening later this month, the one man show is largely composed of the paintings he made right here in Boulder at BCC. “I missed my goal by a week,” he says. “But I think it’s close enough.”

Every time Amato walks past his painting in her home she falls a little more in love with the piece, more connected to her community, to her place, to her people.

“It reminds me of the reason art is so important right now, because looking at it brings me right back to the present moment. Whatever art you might bring into your home, whether it’s a mug or a 10-foot painting, it’s about connecting,” she says. “It is important that people make things. Is it relevant? I don’t know, but I do know there is immense value in what we make. It’s a connector that can bring people together, bring them into the story of their community, bring them closer to the present moment.”

Dawes sought the help of old friend and highly sought producer Blake Mills to add new depth to their music.

Despite the buzz about the band’s divergence in sound, it’s impossible to say Dawes has taken a new direction; as Griffin Goldsmith says, the band’s career is still “propped up” by the narrative and emotional songwriting of his older brother, Taylor Goldsmith.

The younger Goldsmith attributes the band’s flexibility of sound and direction in part to their decision to self-release records since 2013. Now the band’s management company, Q Prime, provides the infrastructure for Dawes’ personal record label, HUB Records.

“At the end of the day, they left us in the kitchen and we’re the musicians, and we really respect the options of our managers,” Goldsmith says. “We have a deep relationship now with them, and we know how to take those opinions and assimilate them. There’s just a deeper understanding; everything is more transparent being on HUB.” So while Dawes may have made it by any measure in the music industry — touring with legends, trusting themselves enough to self-release records, landing on the Billboard charts — they value their status as a hard-working band, because, at least in part, it keeps the pressure at bay.

“I never really had fear [about the new album], like, ‘Oh, I hope people like this,’” Goldsmith says. “I think that’s partly because we’ve never been a huge band, so it’s not like we have these crazy expectations like, say, Hosier does, that comes out of the gate with a huge single and suddenly people are looking to them to put out something like that again.

“I’ve never felt external pressure to deliver something. And I’m glad. I don’t want anything like that.”

‘100 Years’ follows Native Americans’ fight for justice

E

arly on in the documentary 100 Years, the audience is introduced to Dorothy Wilson, a member of the Navajo tribe. Wilson lives in a trailer on a dirt patch. She has no running water, no electricity and watches television with a battery pack.

“People don’t understand what I live like,” she says.

With no natural gas connection, Wilson uses a propane tank for her needs. Only a few yards in front of her trailer, a high-pressure gas line cuts Courtesy of Melinda Janko through her property. “It’d be nice if they could run a free gas line to me if they’re gonna use my land,” she says.

Wilson is one of the many Native Americans featured in 100 Years, playing at The Arvada Center Feb. 10. The documentary tells a story that started more than a century ago, when the U.S. government divided millions of acres of land between some 300,000 Native Americans and promised to manage the land for their benefit, including the distribution of all monies derived as a result of oil and gas, mining, timber and grazing activities. But because of bad record keeping, faulty accounting and an almost total lack of organization on the part of the U.S. government, Native Americans never received their full financial compensation. As a result of this incompetence, Native Americans living on some of the most resource-rich land in the country, are still among the poorest people in the U.S. This mismanagement did not sit well with everyone and one member of the Blackfeet Nation, Elouise Cobell, started asking questions. As treasurer of her tribe, Cobell realized the numbers weren’t adding up and decided to demand justice.

“People are dying in Indian communities every single day ... It’s time to draw a line in the sand. Enough is enough,” she says in 100 years.

In 1996, several years after her first inquires into what had happened to her tribe’s money and with no formal legal expertise, Cobell filed the largest class action lawsuit ever levied against the federal government for the mismanagement of Indian trust funds.

In 2002, filmmaker Melinda Janko was looking for a story for her next project when she stumbled upon an article in Mother Jones about Cobell’s lawsuit.

“I was blown away. I thought I was reading the article wrong, ‘Oh this is something that happened in the 19th century.’ But I read on and realized it was going on today,” Janko says.

Outraged by the story, Janko knew she wanted to help.

She had never been on a reservation and she didn’t know any Native Americans. But she started getting involved in the community, taking baby steps, as she says, making connections with major players including John Echohawk, executive director of the Native Americans Rights Fund in Boulder.

After a year of research, Janko knew what to expect upon Boulder Weekly

arriving on reservations to film the living conditions like those of Dorothy Wilson and others. But she remembers her crew’s strong reaction to the abject poverty. “They were just appalled,” she says. “They said, ‘Are we really filming in the United States? Is this really happening?’”

Throughout the filming, Janko became good friends with Cobell, who she calls the “petite warrior woman.” “[Cobell is] very soft spoken, very unassuming, yet she’s one of the most powerful women I’ve ever met in my life,” Janko says. “She just does not back down.

After 30 years of fighting, in December 2009, the U.S. government settled the suit for $3.4 billion.

“We had several titles for the film, and at one point one of the working titles was Small Measure of Justice,” Janko says. But the filmmakers decided to not take focus away from the victory, “because even though it’s a small measure of justice, it’s still justice.”

While Cobell lived to see the historic settlement, she passed away from cancer on Oct. 16, 2011. Fourteen years in the making, Janko says 100 Years serves as a tribute to Cobell and all those who died waiting for justice.

Janko released the film in the fall of 2016, amidst protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline. “What’s happening in North Dakota is the same as [in 100 Years],” Janko says.

“It’s the government saying, ‘OK, this is your land, but we’ll dictate what to do with it.’”

She plans to visit North Dakota soon and screen her film to give the protesters there hope for the future. Hope is what Janko wants the audience to take away, especially in light of the Trump administration.

During the filmmaking process, Janko says she lost faith many times. But it was Cobell who was always there to encourage Janko and others to keep fighting for good.

“This was [Cobell’s] mantra, she would say, ‘The stars are aligned for the Native Americans to get justice,’” Janko says. “And every time she said that, I believed her.”

‘Split’ is solid, pseudoscientific fun

I

t may be hard for some to pick the lowest moment in M. Night Shyamalan’s career. After all, this is a man who made Marky Mark run from the wind in a movie where plants are the baddies and let Will Smith commit a linguistic hate crime with his accent in After Earth. Yet nothing screams, “Tell me I’m a special boy and love me,” so much as the time Shyamalan created a character in The Lady in the Water who was a film critic and repugnant douche-nozzle, killed him brutally and then also cast himself as a writer who saves the world with the power of his words.

As much as you’d like to, you can’t talk about Shyamalan’s work without talking about Shyamalan’s person. That’s on him. His early insistence on proclaiming himself an auteur before his filmography fully supported it, his continued demands that his name get pre-title billing and his hyperbolic self-praise in interviews prevent a truly objective review of his artistic output independent of his persona. Thus, his latest, Split, is destined to be judged only in context. Happily, it marks a welcomed return to the slightly silly, quasi-preposterous pop entertainment he targeted before wishing his name into a franchisable brand.

In Split, James McAvoy plays a man with dissociative identity disorder, commonly referred to as “multiple personalities.” Some of those personalities are bad and orchestrate the kidnapping of three girls. One of those girls, Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy), is particularly resilient, owing to previous and ongoing icky trauma.

Because this is Shyamalan, he gets science-fiction all up in his A thriller based around a ridiculous take on a real-life mental disorder, this M. Night Shyamalan science, as McAvoy’s character flick sees a great turn from James McAvoy and undergoes different physical another twist ending. changes with each identity, ranging from health problems (like diabetes) to health boons (like being a nigh-invulnerable, muscled, ceiling-climbing cannibal). The bulk of the running time is a simple “can the captives escape” thriller, punctuated with some nice claustrophobic suspense.

McAvoy is pretty damn great; he soft-shoes the narrow gap between completely laughable and B-movie sincerity. Clearly self-aware of what’s being asked of him, McAvoy never translates that to insulting the audience with a tongue-in-cheek performance. Taylor-Joy is capable but, without spoiling things, is somewhat denied the resolution her character earns. Meanwhile, Shyamalan is as restrained as he’s ever been, barely even winking-and-nodding at the audience as if to say, “Ain’t I clever? Well?! Ain’t I?!!”

One of the criticisms leveled against Split has been its use of a psychological condition as a villainous device. That’s often a fair criticism, but the inherent silliness of this depiction prevents it from making any salient implication about realworld mental health; it’d be like extrapolating legitimate psychiatric advice from Lucy in Peanuts. The explicitly nonsensical version of the disorder is only further distanced from reality via the “twist” ending.

Yes, he did the twist again. Thankfully, this one lands, not because of how it informs the content of the film but because of the “meta” implications that stem from it. The temptation after watching each new Shyamalan movie is to declare him either “back” or “washed up.” Split isn’t a guarantee of future greatness but is unquestionably an explicit desire to return to the type of entertainment he once promised. For a man with a single letter as a first name, it’s a good initial start.

Recreating history in ‘Tanna’

raditions may come in all shapes and sizes, but the rigid ones always seem ON THE BILL: Tanna. to be the one’s that last. On the Opens Friday, Feb. 3, Sie Film Center, 2510 E. Colfax Ave., island of Tanna in the South Pacific, Denver, 720-381-0813, tradition is called “Kastom” and it’s denverfilm.org. the one thing the islanders will not yield. And Tickets start at $7. for good reason, Kastom has protected them from colonists, Christian missionaries, even capitalism. For centuries they have held fast to the unwavering traditions of Kastom, but after what happened in 1987, Kastom would have to adapt if Kastom were to survive.

The events that brought about this sea change comprise the plot of Tanna, the new Australian-Vanuatuan co-production nominated for the best foreign language Oscar. Directed by Martin Butler and Bentley Dean, Tanna is shot entirely on location and features performances by the island tribe of the Yakels — they are even listed in the credits as screenplay collaborators.

The story revolves around Wawa (Marie Wawa), a young woman of a certain age who has eyes for the best looking man around, Dain (Mungau Dain). Dain also has eyes for Wawa, but unfortunately they belong to different tribes and the Kastom strictly promotes marriage arranged by the chiefs and not by the yen of the heart and the zeal of the organs.

Marketed as Romeo and Juliet of the South Pacific, Tanna is nominated for best foreign language Oscar.

Though the villagers all recognize this shortcoming in the Kastom, they play by the rules because they are the only rules they know.

Dain and Wawa’s two tribes, the Yakel and the Imedian, exist in a tentative harmony on the island with two other tribes — notated simply as Peaceful Tribe and Witness Tribe — a few Christian converts and just enough jungle farmers to give the impression that modernity is just around the corner. At the center of the island is an active volcano, and it is at this holy place where three crucial deaths will take place. The first one will start another cycle of violence between the tribes; the other two will end it.

Tanna is being marketed as Romeo and Juliet set in the South Pacific and though the story of star-crossed lovers is recognizable, there is nothing about Tanna that feels familiar or even remotely European. Tanna is an immersive experience — one that can occasionally feel slow and drawn out. But life moves at a much different rhythm here and the imagery matches it, in the lush greens of the jungle, the bright blues of the sea and sky, and the thundering reds of a volcano ready to blow.

Tanna is based on a true story, one that co-director Dean happened upon when he visited the island in 2003 working on a piece for Dateline. Dean knew there was more to explore and returned in 2013 with his family to live and play among the Yakel. In return, the Yakels allowed Dean considerable access into their lives and stories, all of which color Tanna’s impressive results. There are many movies worthy of an Oscar nomination, but Tanna is especially deserving.

F

or reasons I won’t attempt to detail in this column, University Hill proves to be a difficult place for many locally grown restaurants (and other businesses) to survive. That being said, there’s more than a couple of eclectic hometown joints that have survived the test of time to become not only community favorites but also landmarks.

I’m hoping Ado’s Kitchen & Bar becomes one of those beloved, timetesting joints.

Great businesses — the timetesting sort — usually have a history, and if that’s any real indication of future success, Ado’s has a leg up.

Ado Salguero started his culinary venture in the summer of 2011 with 503 Cafe in Lafayette, serving up a diverse mix of cuisine, from American to Latin to Italian to Chinese. (503, for the record, is the area code for El Salvador, where Salguero is from.)

Salguero moved his business from its original Public Road location to the Lafayette Marketplace in 2013 when Jon Quinlan, owner of Jax Merchantile, bought the plaza and revitalized it.

But Lafayette’s Flatirons Community Church took over half of the Lafayette Marketplace shopping center about a year and a half later, and Salguero (along with a number of other businesses) decided to relocate the restaurant to Boulder, landing on 13th Avenue. This time the restaurant took the moniker Span-ish — a name which, to be perfectly honest, was a little confusing on its face. (Long story short: the fare “spans”

across a number of international gastronomies and the “ish” refers to the diversity of the menu’s offerings.)

Just this year the restaurant rebranded to Ado’s Kitchen & Bar, a vast improvement in my humble opinion, as it quickly introduces patrons to the owner and chef, a man who will often come out and greet you and ask how everything is tasting.

Ado’s is still dishing out fabulous international cuisine for reasonable prices — a difficult act to balance.

A number of dishes on the menu blur the line between “breakfast” food and “dinner” food (but as I’ve written

before, Americans didn’t always make the distinction as clearly as we do today).

There are breakfast pupusas and a crab cake benedict, plantains with eggs and a New York steak and eggs burrito. Most fascinating to me was the breakfast eggplant Florentine.

In its traditional form, eggplant Florentine is a variation on lasagna, with alternating layers of fried eggplant, tomato sauce, spinach and fresh mozzarella cheese. There are variations on this, with some folks adding ricotta cheese, or some simply dropping sauce, spinach and cheese a top a single slice of fried eggplant instead of the multitude of layers.

There’s really no wrong way to go about this.

Ado’s brings eggplant into the breakfast universe, placing two thick, panko-crusted, fried slices of eggplant into a shallow bath of simple marinara sauce. Atop the eggplant is sautéed spinach — not mushy from overcooking, but firm, with a hint of garlic — then a layer of smoked salmon (like the kind you would pair with cream cheese on a bagel) and two eggs cooked however hard or soft you want them.

The resulting dish is a case study in how to get creative with traditional breakfast staples.

Ado’s is what the Hill needs: a casual, quiet, affordable place to relax and order a few dishes with a table full of friends, taking every opportunity to try a bite from everyone’s plate.

F

rench onion soup has everything that you want in a food experience.

It comes to the table with a heat warning and smoke wafting from the crunchy, highly toasted cheese clinging to the broiled crockery. Good French onion soup is a uniquely crafted bowl to be explored, not just slurped. You spoon down through layers of molten cheese and crusty bread into the soft onion slivers in a serious bone broth.

Since the word “French” is part of the name, it sounds like you need a chef but French onion soup isn’t hard to make. You just need someone

willing to slice a lot of onions and cook them properly. The ingredients — onions, water, broth, cheese — are nutritious and inexpensive, so you’re really paying through the nose when you order it at a restaurant.

Julia Child did her best to demystify this comfort classic — check out the French onion soup episode of The French Chef on Youtube. In her Mastering the Art of French Cooking cookbook, she even recommends serving it during football games, such as the one being played this Sunday. It’s a big upgrade on French onion dip.

Cry me a river for a good cause

Hot-from-the-oven French onion soup, ready to serve. Slowly cooked onions are the secret to a great French onion soup.

Various chefs have various rules about which onions work best in a soup.

I ignore them. I like to mix members of the onion family using various yellow, white and red onions along with shallots, garlic and leeks. I think it adds more depth and boosts that great aroma.

It takes a tremendous pile of slivered raw onions to make this soup. You almost cannot have too many, so you can end up weeping uncontrollably. While you may

need a good sob, you might avoid the irritating effect of syn-propanethial-S-oxide.

Refrigerate the onions for a few hours after peeling them. Before you start slicing, open a window and turn on a fan and wear swim goggles.

You will need your largest pan to cook down all the onions in one batch, low and slow. Caramelize, don’t scorch.

In the beginning, there must be broth. A great bone broth is essential and you can use canned broth — I have — but once you make it you’ll never go back. Just roast some soup bones, beef or pork, in the oven before simmering them with vegetables, herbs and seasonings. Roast chicken bones work too.

Make it vegetarian with a robust veggie broth or miso.

A crouton is not dried-up old bread

A crouton can be any old bread, but the best are made from dense loaves sliced very thickly. On her essential recipe for Soupe à l’Oignon Gratinée, Julia Child recommends “a chewy homemade type of bread.” It shouldn’t be fresh. Dry it out before you toast it. For a change of pace try cinnamon raisin.

Dark caraway rye works well and the soup can become positively Reubenesque with the addition of chopped pastrami.

Be sure to heavily brush the toasted croutons with melted butter and olive oil. For extra oomph, rub the toast surface with cut raw garlic cloves before toasting.

Choose the right cheese

Traditionally, French onion soup is made with a grated, firm, nutty cheese like Gruyere, which melts but doesn’t dissolve.

Other good choices are Swiss, Emmentaler, Manchego, Raclette and Parmesan. I use what I have. Skip Mozzarella and Provolone because they tend to rubberize. Cheddar tends to make sauce, which might not be a bad thing.

This is a great dish to learn because after you make it you can ignore this recipe.

5 to 6 large onions, thinly sliced 4 tablespoons butter 4 tablespoons olive oil 3 tablespoons flour 3 to 4 quarts (approx.) broth 1 cup white wine 1 bay leaf 1/2 teaspoon thyme 1/2 teaspoon salt Fresh ground black pepper, to taste Dense crusty bread, thick slices Olive oil or melted butter 4 to 6 cups grated cheeses Optional: 1/4 cup dry Sherry Boulder Weekly

nibbles Melt butter with olive oil over low heat, add onions and salt. Every few minutes turn the slowly diminishing pile on itself. Let onions cook for about 20 minutes until translucent and soft.

Raise the heat to low medium and cook for another 20 Wikimedia Commons/BrindleT minutes or so, stirring until onions turn golden brown.

Stir flour in, add several cups of broth and stir until flour is dissolved. Add remaining broth plus wine, bay leaf and thyme and simmer on low for about 45 minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Add Sherry, if desired.

Brush thick bread slices (1 1/2 to 2 inches) with butter or olive oil on both sides. Toast, flipping once, until deeply browned.

Make sure soup is steaming hot.

Ladle into oven-proof bowls or casseroles, top with bread and liberally pile each with shredded cheese. Make sure bowl is dense with onions, broth and bread to support the cheese crown.

Place the bowl under a broiler until the top is suitably scorched and molten.

You can also place it in a hot oven for 10 minutes. Remove and serve immediately with bread. Makes four to six servings.

Variations: Add a poached egg when serving.

Tour de brew: Mountain Sun’s Stout Month Anticipating another celebration of the dark pour

ebruary is here again and for dedicated drinkers along the Front Range, that can only mean one thing: Mountain Sun’s Stout Month. This yearly celebration of the pitch-black pint has been going down smooth since 1994 when then-brewer Jack Harris came up with the idea to devote a month to this special beer.

“Jack just kind of brainstormed what they could do to get people in the door in February,” says Mountain Sun’s Director of Brewing Operations John Fiorilli. “He decided to brew a bunch of different stouts and that was literally it. Stout Month was born and here we are many years later just trying to keep up with it.”

And as Fiorilli explains, it’s their annual high watermark.

“Last year we served 570 kegs of stout. In one month, the shortest month of the year,” he says.

And just talking to Fiorilli about stouts makes one’s mouth water. In addition to chocolate and coffee, he tosses out descriptors like coconut, milk, toffee, almond and mint.

“They’re cooking flavors, so all these other ingredients can jump right in and work really well,” Fiorilli says.

The term “stout” dates back to 1677, simply to denote a dark beer strong in alcohol. Once Arthur Guinness began brewing his Irish Dry Stout in 1725, stouts took on that smooth, familiar characteristic most of us expect when we order a pint. But as Fiorilli and Mountain Sun are out to show, stouts come in all sorts of strengths and flavors.

“We always have diversity,” Fiorilli explains. “They’ll always be a regular stout on, there’ll always be one or two [that] have crazy flavors. And then we just try to make sure three coffee stouts don’t all hit at one time.”

This year, Mountain Sun’s five locations will feature 28 stouts brewed by Fiorilli and company and 29 guest stouts from breweries around the state. As proud of his beers as Fiorilli is, he is extremely excited to feature these guest stouts, especially since they are all Colorado brews.

“This is the fourth year in a row that we’ve kept it all in-state,” Fiorilli says.

Hennig Brand collected 1,500 gallons of urine from beerdrinkers, then cooked and re-cooked it till it achieved the “consistency of honey.” Why? Let ’em get high, let ’em get stoned

I

n his line-in-the-sand 1966 album Blonde on Blonde, Bob Dylan sang “everyone must get stoned” on the track “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35.” In 1971, John Prine sang about escaping reality with a joint, chasing rainbows down oneway streets in “Illegal Smile.” In 1980, Muddy Waters sang, “Well, you know there should be no law on people that want to smoke a little dope,” in “Champagne and Reefer.”

These are just some of the songs from the ’60s rock ‘n’ roll sound track of the hippie home that raised me, mixed into catalogs of songs that, on the Courtesy of Mondo Cozmo

surface at least, appeared to have nothing to do with marijuana. As I got older, I added other cannabis classics from other genres to my playlists from the likes of reggae kings Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and The Toyes or rap acts like Madvillain, Dr. Dre and Musical Youth.

Of course you don’t need drugs to be creative or to get down with music. Regardless, there is an irrefutable relationship between marijuana and music that’s becoming all the more apparent as legalization unfolds.

“Marijuana and music have shared the stage for many years,” says lifelong radio consultant Mike

Henry. “Coming from, and still being in, the entertainment business I can say there has always been a strong connection between these two cultures — they are very naturally bonded.”

Henry has more than 35 years of experience working in and for public and commercial radio stations. His radio career began in 1979 at college radio WUOG-FM in Athens, Georgia and since he’s consulted for NPR’s Morning Edition and All Things Considered and most Indie Rock and Triple-A stations across the country, most notably WFUV in New York.

He recognizes the long-standing connection, but remarks at how it seems to be coming out of hiding since legalization hit just three years ago. Before medical and recreational marijuana started becoming legal, he says commercially successful songs tended to obfuscate any connection to marijuana or other drugs. Afterwards it isn’t just musicians that are more comfortable being upfront about their drug use, whether personally or in their lyrics, it’s radio stations too.

“It’s not that these songs weren’t out there, they were. The difference is that now these songs are getting play time on the airwaves, especially on commercial radio,” Henry says. He calls out one song as an example, Mondo Cozmo’s “Shine,” as lead singer Joshua Ostrander belts out, “Let ’em get high, let ’em get stoned,” over and over again.

Using Broadcast Data Service, a Nielsen owned company that tracks radio charts and ratings, Henry looks up the stats for “Shine” for the third week of January.

“The song received 1,285 spins in radio across the country,” he says. “That puts it at number one on the Triple-A chart, Number 13 on the Americana chart and at 44 on the Alternative Chart.” Just two weeks later it crowned all three.

“To me this says that radio stations are no lon-

ger afraid to play songs that openly talk about the use of marijuana,” Henry explains. “That song is an anthem for marijuana users, there is no slight of hand in the lyrics or the presentation of that song.

From the very beginning, this is about smoking weed. As someone who’s spent a career recommending songs to radio stations for airtime I can tell you that for this song to get this level of airplay in our country would not have been possible even five years ago.”

To be sure, this isn’t the first time that music about cannabis has reached commercial success. Look no further than Dr. Dre’s album The Chronic, which reached number three on the Billboard charts in 1993 and sold over 5.7 million copies in the Unites States alone. There are a handful of other albums and songs that have reached similar heights, so it’s not that it was impossible before, it’s just that it was a lot harder to convince a station to spin songs about marijuana and way less common for them to reach that level of success.

Henry credits the change to legalization in so far as it has allowed for a formerly closeted culture to come out from hiding. In 2013 he founded Weedstream, an online music stream dedicated to what he calls a lifestyle format of radio for the marijuana consumer, not just a market, he says, but a demographic.

“Radio has made its living over the last few decades airing to demographic formats — formats that are directed to 10 to 20 year olds or to a specific gender,” he says. “For example, classic rock radio is for men ages 35 to 64, or Top 40 stations, which are targeted to females between the ages of 8 to 34.

“When you have more than 50 percent of several states voting to legalize marijuana, you can’t write that off as a small niche,” he says. “I equate it to demographics like those of ESPN for sports or the MTV brand for music television. This is a large group of otherwise unrelated people, brought together across the lines of genre, connected through the culture of marijuana.”

DAs, including Boulder’s, join the legalization conversation

L

ast Tuesday’s Daily Camera reported that the National District Attorneys Association (NDAA) had formed a 14-member committee to Advise the Trump administration on marijuana policy, and that Boulder District Attorney Stan Garnett was a member of it.

That’s good news. Not as good news as the Camera made it out to be, but good news nonetheless.

The Camera story left the impression that the committee would serve as an official advisory committee to the administration, which unfortunately isn’t accurate.

After the story appeared, Nelson Bunn, director of policy and government affairs for the DAs, sent out an email to several publications that said the NDAA had “formed an internal working group made up of prosecutors from around the country to develop association policy on the subject of marijuana.”

“Contrary to other reporting, the working group is not affiliated with any other organization or entity, including the incoming administration,” the email said.

Still, the formation of the committee is a welcome development, especially given Garnett’s presence on it.

The opinions of the National District Attorneys Association on pot will carry some weight with the Trump administration, whether they are officially sanctioned or not.

The committee’s 14 members include two representatives from Colorado — Garnett and Tom Raynes, executive director of the Colorado District Attorneys Council — and DAs from California and

Oregon, two other states that have legalized.

In other words, representatives from states that have fully legalized marijuana will have a strong presence in the group. It wouldn’t be surprising if there were representatives from medical marijuana states and states that have decriminalized pot possession as well.

That’s important because professional organizations from the criminal justice community have, with a few exceptions, been infamously bad when it comes to marijuana. Police and sheriffs associations in Massachusetts and California opposed the marijuana initiatives that passed in those states last November, and a sheriffs’ group in Arizona was part of the successful effort to kill the legalization initiative in that state.

The newly formed DAs committee has its share of prohibitionists and re-criminalizers on it, according to Garnett.

At the first meeting, some of the DAs wanted to send a letter to the governor of any state with recreational or medical marijuana telling them to shut those businesses down within 90 days.

“I thought that was a particularly unrealistic and ill-conceived idea, and I was not shy about saying that,” Garnett told the Camera.

“For somebody from Missouri or South Carolina to tell Colorado how to handle an issue of its own

choice like legalization of marijuana is not only bad policy, but fails to respect the importance of local control and states’ rights,” he said.

Bunn wrote that the NDAA will release policy positions on cannabis in general “upon completion of the working group discussions,” although he didn’t say when that will be.

That could be a big deal, especially if the committee comes out against a marijuana crackdown at the state level, which is not improbable given the number of states that have legalized or are moving toward legalization.

A DAs association’s stand in favor of leaving marijuana legalization to the states, either officially or informally as is now the case, would go a long way toward preventing a new federal anti-pot jihad. If the prosecutors tell Attorney General-designate Jeff Sessions he’s wasting his time, he’s more likely to pay attention than if the stoners tell him.

And Garnett said it is a near-certainty that Sessions will see his group’s work product.

“Assuming he gets confirmed, he would definitely be the recipient of whatever we come up with,” Garnett said.

The late media critic A. J. Liebling once remarked that if you wanted to know how things worked in America, you had to understand that there were tens of thousands of special interest groups in the country, and that when an issue came along that affected them they would start popping off on it. And when enough of them had popped off, it turned into the vox pop, and politicians ignored it at their peril.

Marijuana legalization is an issue on which a lot of groups who have been silent are now popping off, and what DAs have to say about it will have a significant impact on the emerging vox populi. It’s good to know that Garnett is involved in the conversation.

Splashed across the internet and on billboards in San Francisco, Betabrand boldly and shamelessly claims, “We’re now bigger than Gap and Levi’s combined.”

It’s a post-truth world out there, folks, and those who aren’t going with the flow are going against it.
