It’s frustrating to see so many youngens claim stealing as a birthright. In my opinion, SOPA is BS, but as someone who’s made their bones online, this conversation is long overdue. SOPA and PIPA are the manifestation of not having it until now.

earn a living. I once Googled my own name to find several sites from overseas publishers selling “cheap Kate Zari Roberts posters” — a company in Spain and one in Portugal.

I spoke to an attorney here in Boulder, only to be told that going after someone overseas is much too difficult and costly. It used to be that copyright infringement was punishable by a $10,000 fine for each infringement.

Who knows how many of my photographs these companies sold without paying me? And now, I’m faced with the dilemma of — do I put my work out there on the Internet so that people can see what I do, or do I not because I know someone will steal it?

n its Citizens United decision, the Supreme Court upended our democratic elections by decreeing that corporations and über-wealthy individuals can dump unlimited sums of cash into campaigns to elect their favored candidates. Astonishingly, Justice Anthony Kennedy declared in his majority opinion that such a gusher of special-interest money would not “give rise to corruption or the appearance of corruption.” Who knew so much political naiveté could be cloaked in a

Adelson was bitterly fighting Nevada unions, pushing a state law to crimp worker rights. run for the presidency. In the past, the biggest personal check he could’ve taken from his casino sugar daddy was $5,000. After the Supreme’s Citizens United edict, however, Adelson can go all in to push his willing servant into the White House.

So Newt got $5 million from Adelson to buy his recent South Carolina victory and another $5 million from Sheldon’s wife, Miriam, to advance Gingrich in Florida. And next — well, there’s no telling, is there, Justice Kennedy, since you’ve legalized unlimited funds for the blatant corruption of America’s elections?

Uncensored Shooters should clean up their act

In his article “Ten years after 9/11” (Danish Plan, Sept. 8) Mr. Danish asserts: “You’ll know we’ve won the war on terror when the Islamic world is 1) reasonably democratic, 2) reasonably secular, 3) only modestly corrupt, 4) more or less committed to the rule of law, and 5) fights jihadists more fiercely than we do. Alternatively, you’ll know that we’ve won the war on terror when the Islamic world stops treating its women like shit.”

Why, I ask, shouldn’t we hold our own government and country to the same standard? If one takes a moment to honestly assess things, all of these conditions are also quite applicable to our own country and government. It’s quite easy to point a high-powered intellectual opinion at others, it’s quite another thing to do the same to one’s self.

Perhaps if Mr. Danish began by examining his own faults and hurdles he wouldn’t be so quick to dish out gross equivocations and reactionary pronunciamentos to the outside world.

Indeed, perhaps it’s time that we all look at how we contribute to the quality of the world we share by evaluating the morality we espouse and asking if perhaps it, too, isn’t just well-reasoned (well-to-do) immorality.

Shelter is dedicated

(Re: “Surviving shelters,” cover story, Nov. 9.) I was extremely disappointed to read Elizabeth Miller’s perspective on the Humane Society of Boulder Valley. The article made it sound as though the Humane Society would rather euthanize Sawyer than place him in a lifelong home. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

The shelter workers simply contacted the rescue organization because Sawyer is a dog with special needs that might be better served through an organization that works with this uncommon breed.

The shelter and veterinary staff do an incredible job making sure that pets adopted out are healthy. Most people see LETTERS Page 7

Shattered glass bottles.

Empty ammo boxes. Endless shotgun shells. Brass bullet casings sprinkled across the forest floor. Orange bits of clay pigeons.

That’s what members of the Rocky Mountain Firearm Club (RMFC) found when they headed up Lefthand Canyon in search of a safe place for target shooting on public land.

“When I go to any sort of site up in the mountains where there’s shooting, I see all this trash all over the place,” says Chris Wu, a founding member of RMFC. “It really irritates me. It makes us look like a bunch of rednecks. A few bad apples ruin the bunch. We try to police the area as much as we can, but people leave all kinds of nasty things.”

It seems that the “Leave No Trace” ethic hasn’t quite caught on among recreational shooters to the same degree that it has among rock climbers, mountain bikers and other recreationists.

“I wish people would take some responsibility for their messes,” Wu says.

“Having a gun is a huge responsibility. So is shooting it.”

Members of RMFC are expected to participate in public-service projects, in addition to cleaning up after each RMFC shooting event.

“Every once in a while we go and find a place that has been trashed to heck, take a few bags and clean the place up and hope others follow the example,” Wu says.

The U.S. Forest Service allows only certain kinds of targets: cardboard targets, paper targets, manufactured metallic targets specifically designed for firearms, and clay pigeons. But according to Ranger Trey Schillie, some people choose not to follow the rules.

“It’s amazing what you find,” says Schillie, district ranger for the Boulder Ranger District of the Arapahoe and Roosevelt National Forest and Pawnee National Grassland. “We’ve seen everything from appliances to bottles to scrap lumber. In my office what I’m looking at right now is an old propane tank, and it’s full of holes.”

Schillie says he’s seen instances in which shooters have deliberately tried to shoot trees until the trees fell over.

Sadly, the U.S. Forest Service has to dedicate staff and time to cleaning up the mess these irresponsible shooters leave behind.

“We try to organize different groups to help on that, cleaning up shooting areas,” Schillie says. “We have a cadre of really responsible folks out there who pack it in and pack it out. But there always seems to be the other side of the coin — a few people who give [recreational shooting] a bad name.”

Part of the problem may be the lack of established public rifle ranges. This results in shooters from the Denver metro area driving into the mountains to shoot on Forest Service land. A network of public ranges spread across the state and through the Denver metro area might help decrease shooting traffic in places like Lefthand Canyon, reducing the wear and tear on the land. It’s an issue the Forest Service and other public land managers are beginning to address.

“We’re really starting to take a look at a comprehensive approach across all ownerships and across all landscapes,” Schillie says.

But trash is only part of the problem.

Irresponsible shooters might one day cost someone a limb — or a life.

The former Allenspark dump was closed to shooting after law enforcement documented 18 instances of “near misses” when shots fired on public land made their way onto private land, nearly hitting local residents, Schillie says.

“On the Front Range, we’re really fortunate to have all this public land,” he says. “Shooting is one of the more difficult [recreational uses] to manage because the consequences are very high if things go wrong,” he says.

What’s a responsible shooter supposed to do?

Keep your mind sharp. Shoot intelligently. Follow the rules and regulations.

Fire only in areas where it’s safe, and pack out every bit of your trash. Then volunteer to clean up after other shooters who aren’t as responsible as you are so that recreational shooting doesn’t garner ill will from land managers and the public.

Implied in the Second Amendment is a grave sense of personal responsibility.

The Founders didn’t guarantee us the right to bear arms so that we could shoot down trees, blast refrigerators to bits and scare the hell out of nearby residents.

The right to own firearms is protected under the Second Amendment. But leaving your shooting area looking like the site of a redneck family reunion is not.

SUPER BOWL SIBERIA Take heart, Broncos fans. We may not be playing in the Super Bowl, but at least we don’t have to fork out thousands of dollars for the privilege of hanging out in Indianapolis for a few days. It only seems fitting that all those wealthy East Coast fans who are paying as much as $10,000 per ticket are headed to a place where the most exciting pastime is a temporary zip line designed to fly SB attendees through the heart of this nightlifeless cow-town some 50 feet above the entertainment desert below where no club or modern drinking and eating establishment has ever taken root. Most Super Bowls are played out in the shadows of our nation’s prime centers of debauchery, such as New Orleans’ French Quarter, Miami’s South Beach or San Diego’s Gaslamp District, but not this year. The only way this could have worked out with more humor is if Salt Lake City had an NFL stadium. We sure hope all you Manhattan/Cambridge elites don’t forget to check out the Polled Hereford competition over at the fairgrounds where we hear they have a Budweiser fountain flowing right next to the butter sculpture exhibit. Y’all have fun.

‘IF I HAD A MILLION DOLLARS’ Not even the Barenaked Ladies could have come up with this real-life whackjob example of what can be had provided money is no object.

Boulder real estate developer Stephen Tebo reportedly laid out more than 160 grand for the privilege of being able to tell people that he owns the very Cadillac hearse that transported President John F. Kennedy’s dead body from a Dallas Hospital morgue to Air Force One following the beloved leader’s assassination.

The man with more money than taste will apparently be adding the fourwheeled reminder of one of our nation’s darkest moments to his existing collection of cars estimated to number near 400. Congratulations … sort of … or not.

OVERPAID CU ADMINISTRATORS We love it when the University of Colorado regents wake up and smell the coffee.

It was suddenly news last week that — gasp — a portion of the tuition hikes heaped on the narrow shoulders of our college students is going towards salary increases for already overpaid administrators.

This has been going on for a long, long time, but it’s especially putrid in the current economic environment, when many people are still unemployed, or at least underemployed, and students are holding down menial jobs in addition to their coursework. And it doesn’t pass the sniff test when CU officials are constantly whining about budget crises and how the state has slashed the university’s funding over the years.

Hooray for the regents who are publicly questioning this practice of giving ridiculous raises to people who are already making well into six figures — and who, in some cases, are not exactly superstars that we need to pay well to keep.

The tired old argument that you need to pay someone $250,000 to retain him or her in a competitive market is bullshit in most cases. We could afford to lose some of these bozos and replace them with more competent people pretty easily — and maybe even pay them less.

We can see having to pay good faculty to keep them from being lured away to another university, but as for padding the pockets of administrator fat cats? We urge you to check out the online petition asking CU to rescind the raises of nine university administrators: http://chn.ge/CUpay.

1. The ghosts of Valmont Butte Ever since the city of Boulder purchased its Valmont Butte property, city taxpayers have been picking up the tab to pay for the environmental sins committed by more than a century’s worth of long-departed users at the site.

looking for a pet are not prepared to take on a pet with a disease that might require lifelong medical treatment and significant expense. Recently a client of mine adopted a puppy from the shelter.

Prior to adoption, the puppy, Maya, had exhibited some lameness, but rather than writing her off as unadoptable or adopting her out “as-is”, the veterinary staff kept her in the hospital over a weekend for monitoring and care, and performed x-rays to ensure that she was not adopted out with a debilitating bone disease called panosteitis. The

shelter incurred significant expense and spent a lot of time with my client to make sure their dog was healthy prior to adoption, or if not, to ensure that at least the adopter knew what to expect.

This is an example of the amazing care animals get at our local shelter.

I invite Elizabeth or any one questioning the motives of the Humane Society of Boulder Valley to spend a day working at the shelter to see what a tough job it is. Working at a shelter is often thankless and does not pay much.

Monsanto sued by organic farmers and seed companies

n a recent Boulder Weekly article titled “Behind the GMO curtain” (Dec. 15), Lisa Drake, Monsanto’s Englewood-based lead for state and local government affairs, was quoted as saying “We [Monsanto] sure don’t make it a practice of suing our own customers.” Drake also told BW that those who say that Monsanto regularly sues farmers for being in possession of her company’s patented GMO seeds after those seeds have drifted onto their property through no fault of their own are making wildly inaccurate claims. As of Tuesday, Jan. 31, it seems more likely than ever that such assertions by Monsanto and its employees will finally be put to the test before a jury in a New York City courtroom. It has been a long road to reach this point.

The Public Patent Foundation (PUBPAT) filed a lawsuit last year against Monsanto Company on behalf of 60 family farmers, seed businesses and organic agricultural organizations.

According to PUBPAT’s website, the suit was filed “to challenge the chemical giant’s patents on genetically modified seed. The organic plaintiffs were forced to sue preemptively to protect

themselves from being accused of patent infringement should they ever become contaminated by Monsanto’s genetically modified seed, something Monsanto has done to others in the past.”

The “wildly inaccurate claims” referred to by Monsanto’s Drake seem less wild every day. According to recent reporting from In These Times, “The agro-giant acknowledges that since 1997, it has filed suit against farmers 145 times and has settled another 700 alleged infringements out of court.”

The current lawsuit, which is known as Organic Seed Growers & Trade Association (OSGATA), et al. v.

Monsanto, was filed in federal district court in Manhattan in March.

According to PUBPAT, “In June, 23 additional plaintiffs were added to the suit, bringing the total number to 83.”

As of this week, the class action suit represents more than 300,000 organic farmers, seed companies and affiliated organizations.

As would be expected, Monsanto filed a motion last year to have the case dismissed, a ploy that usually works for the politically influential corporation, but not this time. After Susan

Reverend Friendly, street poet, dies at 76

averne Lobdell, the heavily bearded, silver-tongued street poet known as Reverend Friendly, who haunted Boulder’s open mics for decades, died on Jan. 7. He was 76.

Lobdell was a fixture around town, and in his later years you could see him shuffling around town, handing out beige business cards with his photo on them, a speech bubble coming out of his mouth with the words, “Laugh and the world laughs with you / cry and you cry alone / so if you’re gonna pout stay at home.” He’d approach people and talk to them, and when he said goodbye, he’d say, “Bless your soul! May the birds of paradise fly up your nose! And may an elephant carress your toes, and

reading written arguments for why the case should not be dismissed, Judge Naomi Buchwald agreed to move the case forward by hearing oral arguments on Jan. 31. She heard those arguments earlier this week and has announced that she will make a final decision regarding the case going before a jury no later than March 31.

Judge Buchwald’s decision was enthusiastically welcomed by a gathering of organic farmers and Occupy supporters who had joined them outside the Manhattan courthouse.

The lead plaintiff in the case, OSGATA, is located in Montrose, Colo. On the organization’s website, president of OSGATA Jim Gerritsen

made this statement about the lawsuit and its progress: “Today is Independence Day for America. Today we are seeking protection from the Court and putting Monsanto on notice. Organic farmers have the right to raise our organic crops for our families and our customers on our farms without the threat of invasion by Monsanto’s genetic contamination and without harassment by a reckless polluter. Beginning today, America asserts her right to justice and pure food.”

A Michigan native, Lobdell, or “Rev” as friends called him, moved to Boulder in the late ’80s and began frequenting poetry readings around town. Tom Peters, the owner of the beat book shop on Pearl Street, hosted many of the open mics Lobdell attended.

“I’ve never met anybody who didn’t say that he liked him,” Peters says. “Almost everybody I know at one point or another asked me if I knew him, because everybody that met him was always really impressed by him.”

Lobdell’s life was a struggle with addiction, mental illness and homelessness. He experienced sporadic periods of homelessness during his two decades in Boulder, and five years ago he became one of the pilot clients for Housing First, a program that pro-

vides housing to Boulder’s chronically homeless population, provided that they meet with a case manager. Chris Byrne was Lobdell’s case manager, and he was with Lobdell the week he died. Lobdell had planned to visit a friend back in Michigan, and Byrne had made travel arrangements for him.

“His friend, what he does for a living is make parade floats,” Byrne says. “And the Rev described in detail what it was going to be like when he got there. There was going to be a parade for him, ‘Welcome home, Reverend Friendly,’ and there was no doubt in my mind that he didn’t see this and believe it a hundred percent, and he passed away that night. So he had a parade [in his head]. … If you could write an ending to that story, could it not be better that he died surrounded by those who cared about him, off the streets? Valmont cemetery families say city in danger of digging up human remains

ne of the key elements that will ultimately determine how many millions of dollars will be spent cleaning up contamination that originated from milling operations once located on the City of Boulder’s 103-acre Valmont Butte property is whether or not adjacent properties were also contaminated by those operations. The city, like the EPA and CDPHE, like to quote reports indicating that there is no evidence that contamination has spilled over to other properties. This is a bit misleading, however.

As can be seen on the map above, in three different locations, areas impacted by lead contamination (depicted in blue) appear to go right up to the fence line of adjacent properties, including the Valmont Cemetery and Xcel’s property to the south.

For the “no evidence of off-site contamination” argument to be true, we would have to believe that a half-century’s worth of windblown contamination was stopped dead in its tracks by chain-link and barbed wire fences. As we found during our investigation, “no evidence” of contamination actually means no testing for contamination. **** As the city of Boulder prepares to begin earth-moving operations at the Valmont property, one of the most immi10 February 2, 2012

nent issues is what might be unintentionally unearthed in the process.

Aside from the radioactive soils contaminated by heavy metals such as lead and arsenic that might be kicked up during remediation (officials say water trucks will be on hand to continually spray work areas down to eliminate dust), there are archeological and historical resources on the property that could also be disturbed.

As Boulder Weekly continues its series on “The Ghosts of Valmont Butte” and the environmental history of the property currently being remediated by the city, we will be dealing with threats to cultural assets one by one. Before we take on the topic of why the butte is sacred to Native Americans and why some Native artifacts and burial sites could be unearthed during the project, we will first turn our attention to the excavation of the Valmont Cemetery’s parking lot, which descendants of some pioneer families say could hide unmarked graves. **** Pioneers first arrived in Boulder Valley in the late 1850s, when a party of miners made a base camp in the area. A few years later, in 1860, the town of Valmont’s first building, the Tommy Jones Stage Stop, was constructed, and the town of Valmont was platted soon after, in 1865.

Lawyer: City/county could be liable for cemetery contamination

A

Boulder environmental attorney says the city of Boulder and/or Boulder County could be held liable if the historic Valmont Cemetery is contaminated as a result of the current remediation effort at the butte.

And he doesn’t rule out the possibility that the site is already contaminated. After all, it’s unlikely that lead pollution would be stopped by the chain-link fence surrounding the property.

The Valmont School District No.4 Cemetery Association is being represented by Randall Weiner, the lawyer who in 1999 helped about 300 residents of the Denver suburb Globeville win a settlement in a class-action lawsuit against a smelting plant accused of contaminating the area with lead and other heavy metals.

Weiner wrote a letter to the county commissioners on June 27, prior to the commissioners’ approval of the city’s remediation plan for the site (the property, while owned by the city, is in unincorporated Boulder County and has not been annexed by the city of Boulder). Weiner asked that city and county staff meet with cemetery representatives and address their concerns about contamination on the gravesites, crosscontamination and unmarked burial sites.

“The cemetery is one of the few places on Valmont Butte which receives significant public travel,” he writes. “Valmont Cemetery is still an active private cemetery where only pioneer families associated with the Valmont School District may be buried.”

Weiner says in the letter that areas west of the cemetery show significant lead contamination, up

to 1,200 ppm, and are “a likely source of windborne contamination of the cemetery.” (He notes that in Globeville, the state required cleanup for lead when it exceeded 500 ppm, and many scientists insisted on a 100 ppm threshold.)

“Throughout this entire process, no attempt was made by the government personnel or their consultants to reach out to the cemetery representatives to attempt to meet their concerns,” Weiner writes. “As a city representative stated to me this morning, the city ‘didn’t have a responsibility to’ consult with them.

The county can and should rectify this for two reasons, a moral one, and a legal one: First, the city appropriately consulted with Native American interests concerning cultural artifacts and other issues as part of the remediation investigation. The representatives of Valmont’s early pioneers deserve no less consideration. Their cultural artifacts (gravesites, etc.) are as meaningful and important to the history of the area as those of Native Americans.

“Second, it is likely that the cemetery is as contaminated as the surrounding areas, and that it will be impacted by the remediation occurring to the north and west of the cemetery,” Weiner continues.

“The cemetery has a legally protected interest in its land, and, in addition to those parties responsible for the contamination, the city and/or county could be liable if they cause the cemetery to become contaminated as part of the remediation process and those conducting remedial operations. …

of Valmont, on the north side of the butte, had three blacksmith shops, two general stores, one hardware store, two hotels, a school, two churches, the offices of three doctors, a newspaper and three saloons on the west end, known as “Devil’s Row.” Valmont’s history from the town to the butte is rich with the best the times had to offer as well as the worst. For instance, according to one colorful account from 1867, while the editor of the Valmont newspaper was reportedly being entertained by friends at a local saloon, the paper’s hand-operated printing press was hijacked and taken to Boulder to be used by the Boulder Valley News. Losing its newspaper was important because Valmont had been trying to obtain the transfer of the county seat from Boulder.

On a darker note, nearby Fort Chambers was used as a militia training site by the early settlers, and soldiers from there participated in the infamous Sand Creek Massacre.

Today, there is little evidence remaining of those bygone days, and what little there is may now be threatened. Like the Native Americans who laid loved ones to rest at the butte, the rocky promontory above the plains was favored by Boulder Valley’s earliest Euro-American families as a suitable final resting place for the deceased. It is perhaps the last, best record of the first families who crossed the plains from the East to settle in Boulder Valley.

According to a 2004 archeological history of the butte by Peter Gleichman, the land for the Valmont Cemetery, also known as the Pioneer Cemetery, was platted the same year the railroads arrived, 1873, although some graves at the cemetery predate the plat.

Gleichman acknowledges in his 2004 study that local historians have said the cemetery “is not entirely enclosed by the fence. Some unmarked graves may be outside the fence, on the north and east … . These unmarked graves are from fatalities from the 1918 influenza epidemic (Teegarden, p.c). A buffer around the cemetery should be delineated, with no disturbance in the buffer. An alternative would be to attempt to locate the

unmarked graves with remote sensing, i.e., ground-penetrating radar.”

But the city of Boulder plans to dig up contaminated earth that makes up the cemetery’s parking lot on the north side, within that buffer identified by Gleichman.

It is an approach that has upset members of the cemetery association. **** A visit to the Valmont Cemetery, up a steep, rutted driveway off of 63rd Street, not far from the Stazio Ball Fields, offers good views of the property owned by most of the players in the Valmont Butte story. Western Disposal, which was involved in acquiring a contract for the city to buy its 103-acre parcel, has a hazardous materials processing site to the west. The fly ash-burying operations of Xcel’s Valmont Station nearly abut the cemetery to the south, with the coalburning power plant’s stacks towering just across the lake where the Allied mill once dumped at least some of its contamination.

To the east, the cemetery property drops down towards the black plastic fence which now delineates the perimeter of the 17-acre primary tailings pond (see map on page 10) on the city’s tract of land. The EPA estimates that this now dry pond is holding more than 300,000 tons of radioactive and heavy metals-contaminated mine tailings. The primary tailings pond is the location that the current remediation plan, submitted by the city and Honeywell, has established as the final resting place for all contaminated soils from the property. The plan, which is mainly focused on remediating lead and other heavy metals, calls for all contaminated soils from the secondary tailings pond (see map on page 10) and other areas on the city’s property, including the cemetery parking lot, should be dug up and transferred to the primary tailings pond beginning this month. **** Carol Affleck, a spokesperson for the Valmont School District #4 Cemetery Association, and Jody Harper, whose parents, grandparents and other relatives are see CEMETERY Page 13

buried in the cemetery, want the city to use ground-penetrating radar to detect possible graves before they start churning up the earth on the north side of the cemetery. Harper says she recalls her father telling her he knew of burials that had been done on that north side of the fenceline, where the parking lot is now.

He told her some were probably shallow graves, given how hard the ground is in the winter.

Affleck and Harper also say that Xcel, unlike the city of Boulder, agreed to use ground-penetrating radar along the cemetery’s property line to the south when the company started to work on that portion of its property. Using the radar allowed Xcel to discover burial sites before they could have been destroyed by earth-moving equipment.

According to an August 2005 report

by Greystone Environmental Consultants, Inc., which was hired by Xcel to study the area south of the cemetery, ground-penetrating radar and surface inspection “identified human bone and cultural features that may be associated with additional graves outside the currently fenced area of the Early Pioneer Cemetery/Valmont Historic Cemetery.”

The company recommended re-fencing the area and including a buffer around the identified features.

Affleck says the city refuses to use ground-penetrating radar before digging in the cemetery parking lot, despite the fact that one of the leading experts in the use of the technology to discover and map historic graves, University of Denver anthropology professor Lawrence Conyers, is practically in Boulder’s backyard.

When asked about the plans for digging up the cemetery parking lot, Joe Castro, the city’s director of facilities and fleet management, told Boulder Weekly that workers will only be removing 18 inches of soil, and that while city officials considered the use of ground-penetrating radar, that technology did not seem reliable.

“We didn’t think it would be an effective tool for the depth we would be digging to,” Castro says.

Ground-penetrating radar generates many “false positives,” he says, so instead the city will have an archaeological monitor on site to keep a close eye on what is being dug up. Castro added that he had not heard that Xcel had used groundpenetrating radar and had discovered

burial sites on the south side.

“We’re concerned, but we don’t anticipate bodies being buried in the first foot and a half of soil,” adds Bill Boyes, the city’s facilities maintenance program manager.

Even Gleichman has changed his stance regarding the buffer he recommended eight years ago. He explains that his 2004 study was done for a city contractor to prepare for the fire training center and bio-composting facility that were to be constructed at the property.

(City officials later abandoned the plans for bio-composting and built the fire training center near the Boulder Reservoir.)

Gleichman says he now believes the buffer he recommended is impossible to maintain, since contamination has been found in the ground leading right up to the cemetery gates.

As for the failure to use ground-penetrating radar, he says it might be a question of cost.

“At this point, they’re thinking it’s too expensive, and they covered their bases with the archeological monitor,” Gleichman says.

Castro says the city didn’t look at a price comparison when it came to ground-penetrating radar, although he acknowledges that money is an issue when it comes to what remediation and renovation work is being done. In the case of restoring the historic buildings at the nearby millsite, he says the city plans to simply put a fence around the area.

“We’re hoping for a donor,” Castro explains.

But Gleichman says the fact that Boulder County has landmarked the site doesn’t permit such an approach when it comes to those structures.

“Demolition by neglect is something that landmarking should not allow,” he says.

Affleck agrees, asking whether other official county landmarks should be subjected to the same approach.

“Would we treat Boulder Falls or the Flatirons like Valmont Butte?” she asks.

It’s a good question, and it might just depend on who you ask — and how much it would cost if those landmarks were as contaminated as the butte.

He adds that the city has never reached out to include the cemetery in the remediation, and that if the site is already polluted, it’s possible that the city and/or Honeywell could have some liability for the contamination — and the cleanup.

Searching for a CSA

f you are trying to avoid GMOs and the potential for strange growths or zombie-like qualities this summer, participating in a CSA, or Community Supported Agriculture, may be a good choice.

By signing up for a CSA with a particular farm, you pay a set price to receive a variety of produce each week from that farm’s harvest. Not only does this partnership enable you to receive fresh, local produce, it also grants you the opportunity to support local farms and help them afford the seeds, equipment and labor needed to provide another harvest next year.

Choosing a CSA means considering a lot of factors, including the variety of produce, pick-up times or locations, and that warm, fuzzy feeling you get when you help others. Boulder has a large selection of farms that offer a CSA, but here are a handful of options that seem promising.

With these options, your weekly grocery trips could be reduced to milk and meat for the carnivores of the family. Grant Family Farms also sends weekly emails to let you know what produce you will be receiving each week, as well as recipes and cooking tips.

We are a good option because we won’t run out of shares. We have a huge variety since we have been farming since the ’70s, and our produce is certified organic.”

Heartfelt help In conjunction with their Cultiva Youth Project, which teaches local high school kids farming and business skills, Growing Gardens has decided to offer a CSA for the first time this year.

“The cool thing about what we do is that we work with the youth,” says Connor Murphy, a grower at Growing Gardens. “People who join the CSA get to develop relationships with these kids. We’re also located in town, so people can ride or take the bus or walk to pick up their CSA.” Boulder Weekly

Participants in the Cultiva CSA can pick up their produce at the Cultiva Youth Garden in North Boulder on Wednesdays from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. When you sign up for the 20-week CSA, either the partial share for one to two people for $320 or the full share for three to four people for $540, the money will be used to support the Cultiva program as well as plant for next season. So you wouldn’t just be eating healthier this summer, you would also be helping the kids.

Boulder Weekly dives into the company’s Montreal headquarters and gets a behind-the-scenes look at how it all happens story and photos by David Accomazzo

ut the name of Quebec billionaire Guy Laliberté, the mercurial founder of Cirque du Soleil, into YouTube, and the first result isn’t circusrelated but a six-and-a-half-minute clip from a high-stakes game of Texas Hold ’em.

A few minutes in, Laliberté has poker pro David Benyamine up against a wall.

Benyamine is all-in with an extremely weak hand, and Laliberté has a 2:1 chance to win and walk away with $600,000 of Benyamine’s money. All he has to do is let the hand play out. But Laliberté, worth $2.5 billion, is feeling charitable. Perhaps it’s because the money would increase his net worth by just one tenthousandth of one percent, or maybe it’s because Benyamine is French.

“I know this is a lot of money for you,” Laliberté says in his slight French-Canadian Facundo Gimenez applies clown accent as he waves his hand dismissively. “It’s makeup in one of more important [for you], that pot, than it is Cirque du Soleil’s dressing rooms. for me.

“I know I’m very favorite, so I’ll make you a deal. I’ll take the middle [pot, maybe $100,000] and forget it.”

It’s an incredibly unorthodox move by Laliberté, completely out of left field and completely unnecessary, and it’s extremely generous.

There’s no crying in poker, after all. Benyamine, who had the trembling look of a guy about to be executed, instantly takes the deal. Instead of potentially losing $600,000, he loses $50,000.

Laliberté doesn’t play by any rulebook, be it in poker or in the performing arts. He loves to travel. He spent $35 million to visit space.

Cirque du Soleil, his life’s work, is far from conventional; he has taken the traditional circus, pumped it with steroids and mescaline, and created a billion-dollar company. When he plays poker, you get the feeling

formers, make costumes, mold athletes into artists and more. The building is also home to a massive costume workshop, where Cirque employs artisans and fashion designers to make the elaborate costumes, headpieces, shoes and wigs that make the Cirque shows so visually appealing.

I got a chance to see the headquarters up close and personal after Cirque du Soleil invited me to see Dralion, coming to the 1stBank Center in Broomfield Feb. 8-12, in Montreal. They flew me out to Canada, set me up in a hotel downtown and gave me a tour of the headquarters and costume workshop. I got a rare glimpse at a side of Cirque du Soleil most never get to see — the unsung workers who keep the costumes shiny and clean, the artisans who make them, and the studios where the acrobats and performers perfect their craft.

The training process for new Cirque du Soleil performers lasts at least 16 weeks.

About half of all performers come from an athletic background, so Cirque puts them through a training program designed to help them transition from athlete to athletic performance artist. (See Jan. 26 story “Inside the heads of circus performers.”)

“We give them tools to develop their artistic potential,” says Cirque du Soleil’s corporate PR manager, Chantal Côté. “We will not give them all the answers. They will have to find them, learn to cope with ambiguity, which is not an easy thing to do.”

You have to do your routine, and that’s it,” says 36-year-old Alejandro Cuenca, a Barcelona, Spain, native who was competing in international trampoline competitions before joining Dralion. “When you’re a performer, you don’t only have to do your skills, you have to perform. You have to do some choreography, to do movements, to do makeup. To be in character, it’s absolutely different. It’s a different world.”

Cirque du Soleil doesn’t employ makeup artists as part of the touring shows; rather, each artist applies his or her makeup individually. Simple makeup designs take up to an hour to apply, and the more complex ones can take even longer — some of the performers on Dralion, says show publicist Julie Desmarais, have seven layers of colors to apply around their eyes alone. Learning how to apply makeup is a complex process that takes a couple of training sessions, but it explains why, as you walk around Cirque’s headquarters, you might pass by a woman wearing gym clothes and elaborate silver and red makeup.

All the costumes for all 22 Cirque shows are designed and produced by hand at the Montreal headquarters. The average life for a Cirque do Soleil show is 12 to 15 years, and that creates problems when designing costumes. You can’t just buy a decade’s worth of cloth at one time; it’d be impossible to store.

And that’s just for one costume, not thousands. So Cirque solved that problem by doing everything in-house, from silk-screen-

ing to bath-dyeing to painting directly on the fabric.

“Let’s say we see a nice blue on the market somewhere,” Côté explains. “In order to have enough blue to last the show for the next 15 years, we would need to buy rolls and rolls and rolls of this, since next year fashion would make it unavailable for us.

“So we buy it white, and we’ll just dye it and print it as needed.”

The supply area for the costume workshop is impressive, with shelves filled with hundreds of rolls of brightly colored fabrics.

Tall shelves filled with zippers, sequins, straps, buttons and more stretch as far as the eye can see. One section contains dozens of gallon-sized jugs of different colors of glitter.

Every costume has a production “bible” that specifies how much red, yellow or green the workers need to produce a specific color.

To make the process even easier, the bible also includes the measurements of the performer that the costume needs to fit.

Cirque takes very exact measurements when the performers come to Montreal to train, down to a 3-D model of the performer’s head. This allows the costume workers in Montreal to tailor each costume in Montreal, which minimizes the time the show’s wardrobe supervisors have to meddle with the costume once it gets shipped out to the performer on tour.

made in Montreal as well. The shoe workshop is a busy, cluttered place filled with beastly looking industrial sewing machines and work tables. On one wall sits dozens of different-sized shoe molds that the shoemakers use to create shoes entirely from scratch. In other cases, athletic shoes or ballet shoes are painted or dyed to fit the specific needs of the costumes. On average, the workers produce nearly 3,000 pairs of shoes each year. ~~~ Creating a show, designing the costumes, making the shoes, and training the performers is just the first step. The next step is sending the show out on the road.

Dralion premiered in Montreal in 1999.

The show blends Chinese circus arts with Cirque du Soleil presentation, and it was recently adapted to tour small arenas. It takes 18 53-foot semis to transport the show’s elaborate set and wardrobe, and 24 full-time crewmembers manage everything during the show. At each stop on the tour, 75 to 100 local volunteers help set up and tear down the show, and with all that help, it only takes a few hours.

“In some places, the little things don’t count, but for us it’s very important. Just maintaining that is very important. …

Our job is to make sure the artists feel 100 percent secure and comfortable,” says Mike Newnum, the interim production manager.

That means doing everything from

checking each light bulb before the show to regulating the temperature backstage.

There are literally thousands of pounds of rigging that must be hung from the rafters of each arena. Technicians must oversee all the moving parts in the show, anything that’s automated. All the sound systems must be checked. It’s a massive operation.

“Every city we go to, before we ever do a show before the audience, almost every act goes on stage,” Newnum says. “Our artists have hardcore work ethics. We want to make sure they’re not questioning what they’re doing, because what they do is pretty crazy. So we want them to make sure that when they’re on that stage, even if it’s a new arena, they know where the suite lights are, they know where the exit lights are, so when they’re spinning around and doing all the things that they do, they have those reference points and they know what to ignore. And we’ll do that every week.”

The wardrobe alone takes up one and a half semis. Melody Wood, a Londoner, supervises all the wardrobe operations, which includes setting up six washing machines and two dryers and a number of fans to speed the air-drying process.

“As a rule, if they wear it, whether it be their face or their body, then we take care of it,” Wood says.

That includes wardrobe, makeup, shoes, etc. Dralion employs four full-time wardrobe workers with them, who are responsi-

ble for putting out any wardrobe-related fires, including sudden rips, tears, alterations and replacements. They carry a whole filing-cabinet-sized drawer full of shoelaces, packets of replacement beads, dozens of different colors of threads and hundreds of spare cases of foundation and creams.

“It’s about assisting the artist, whether it’s about providing them with makeup, makeup removers, whether the elastic is stretched on the hats,” Wood says.

“Ultimately it’s about preparing. We do a lot of washing, a lot. But that’s part of any show because items are being used every day and have to be clean. That’s a challenge for us because we change cities every week. Water can be very different from city to city. So sometimes a costume can feel very soft, and sometimes it can feel very stiff.” ~~~ Cirque’s success is in flaunting the rules, taking the unusual and making it extraordinary. Part of Dralion is an incredible act that involves a woman balancing on one or two hands on a small, circular platform raised five or six feet off the ground. With her back to the audience, she curves her torso so that her head is facing the audience, and then slowly brings her feet to her head. It’s as if instead of bending forward to touch her toes, she bent backwards.

and flexibility, but in the United States, it’s typically the stuff of NBA halftime shows, where the novelty — the “look, mom, she’s super bendy!” factor — is exaggerated, and the poetics of the human potential minimized by the bright lights and popcorn and beer. But in Cirque du Soleil, the presentation is sublime. And with beautiful handmade costumes, live music, elaborate and enormous sets and gorgeous stage lighting,

contortion — or juggling, tumbling, etc. — becomes art.

And it remains art, despite the pomp and bombast and production values that dangle precariously on the edge of cheesiness.

Cirque du Soleil remains true to the spirit of its founder, the funseeking visionary who never lets the logistics bog down the pursuit of wonder, whether it’s in poker or circus.

bout 10,000 playwrights live and work in the country, but in the past 10 years, there have been an average of two new plays produced on Broadway each year, according to Jason Loewith, executive director of the National New Play Network. The task of finding new playwrights who are chronicling our time falls to smaller, mid-size theaters, and one of the leading lights in Colorado’s theater scene, a theater that has built its reputation on premiering new works, is Denver’s Curious Theatre Company.

“In our current economy, institutions are fleeing from the risk of new plays,” Loewith says. “That’s why the small to mid-size theaters that specialize in new plays are so essential to the health of the sector because they’re the only ones who are really doing it, who are investing in playwrights that are not already household names.”

The National New Play Network organizes rolling premieres, a series of three productions of a new play that puts it in front of three audiences and reviewers, in three communities, done by three groups of artists, helping to vet the play so that it might be picked up by a company as a solid work, rather than a risky endeavor.

In 28 rolling premieres coordinated by the NNPN, Curious, Colorado’s only NNPN member theater, has participated in eight, Loewith says.

“Part of the reason we started the company was we felt like there was an opportunity in the cultural community for doing both new work and work that has a fairly high degree of social relevance,” says Chip Walton, Curious Theatre Company’s artistic director and one of the company’s co-founders.

“We really try not to produce anything in Colorado that’s ever been produced before [here],” Walton says.

“It’s just really exciting to me that we’re bringing all of these playwrights, the next generation of great American playwrights are being introduced to Denver audiences through the work that we’re doing.”

Their lineup for this, their 14th season, includes a Tony Award-winning play and a Pulitzer Prizewinning play.

In other words, they bring work you might otherwise have to go to New York City to see.

“Our mission is to engage our community in contemporary issues through modern theater,” says Christy Montour-Larson, who has been with the company for 11 years and directed nine productions. “We like to create a path for our audiences and our community to think deeper about the world we live in.”

Those world premieres, regional premieres and newer plays are “plays that ask questions about what does it mean to be a human being on this planet,” Montour-Larson says.

Their current production, American playwright Bill Cain’s 9 Circles, tells the story of Daniel Reeves, a soldier who served in the Iraq War and was put on trial for war crimes, accused of multiple killings and rape.

For all the questions a play embattled with current events like that might raise, Curious hosts talkbacks after every show, giving audience members a chance to ask questions and converse with the artists.

“Theater is an art form that is all about the live community experience, which means that playwrights are in a unique position to enter into cultural conversation with communities in a way that other artists often are not,” Loewith says. “Great plays and playwrights are real chroniclers of our time, and they are vital to the cultural health of our communities and our nation.”

Curious Theatre is also one of the NNPN’s only members to host a playwright in residence three of the five years since that program’s launch.

Steve Moulds, this season’s playwright in residence, compares the time the residency provides to an island in the constant swim that is keeping a playwrighting career afloat, thereby keeping American theater relevant and fresh.

“I think we’re, right now in the United States, in a time period where a lot of things are getting kind of repurposed,” Moulds says. “All of our movies seem to be preexisting properties based on a book or based on an old board game or just musicals that are based on movies that are then made back into movies again. … I think it’s important to fund the playwrights and support the playwrights, because otherwise the content won’t get made.”

Curious has also fostered young playwrights through Curious New Voices, a teen writing program, and local voices through Denver Stories. And their $1.1 million budget was supplemented this year with the national “Think It” and “Do It” grants, which funded having two producers in residence, MontourLarson and Karen Slack, to essentially be paid to be artists and represent the artists’ perspective in some of the other decisions driving the organization.

They’re re-imaging the model for artists in theaters, Walton says.

“These companies are ... giving a new generation of theatergoers an appreciation for risk and experimentation, and that’s what’s most exciting about a place like Curious,” Loewith says. “Chip hasn’t built an institution based on what’s the hottest play on Broadway and what star can I bring in to do it and what classic will interest the most people. He’s built an audience that is hungry for work that they’ve never heard of by playwrights they’ve not yet become familiar with, in many cases, and that’s exciting.”

ands are chemistry experiments, and the introduction of a couple new elements can change the mix in not readily apparent ways. Dr. Dog has been together for more than a dozen years and released six albums of widescreen psych-pop, redolent of hooks and rather rollicking rock energy.

Though their approach hasn’t necessarily changed — it still sounds like a Dr. Dog album — the addition of drummer Eric Slick and multi-instrumentalist Dmitri Manos has had a dramatic impact on the new album, To The Void. “[Slick’s] open to anything and by far the best mechanical player in the band, with the best feel. He’s probably the best musician in the band,” says bassist Toby Leaman. “We’re a different band, and the four of us that have been in the band are all better players, all have a better idea what our roles are and what our strengths are.”

Slick’s addition since the last album has made a subtle difference in how the band writes, which — along with Slick’s accomplished playing — is partially responsible for Be the Void’s irrepressible energy. Over the years, the members of Dr. Dog developed a manner of bringing their songs into the studio partially

completed. After laying down what they had, they’d encourage everyone to make suggestions for the rest of the parts, whether they play the instrument or not.

“So guitar lines get written by people that don’t necessarily play guitar.

Same thing with drums, bass and keys.

It’s whoever has the best idea, that’s who gets to write the part,” Leamon explains.

Such a democratic, open-ended process tends to result in more and more recording layers, sometimes to the point of overcrowding the sonic field. While they would try to peel the production back, the songs would still sometimes sound stiff from porting around so many sounds. Slick helped fix this issue, driving the band toward their most rocking effort to date. It’s much more upbeat and affirming than 2010’s dark, dour, life-questioning Shame Shame.

“Eric is really good at coming up with parts,” says Leamon. “You don’t have to spend a lot of time filling in the gaps, which is what we did before. We overdubbed heavily. A lot of times the rhythm was the last thing to be solidified. So we’re doing all this hyper arranging to get it to sound the way we wanted when really what we needed was just for it to move. I feel all the stuff on

this record does that.”

Indeed, Be the Void features a spirit akin to their live shows. Absent the 25 or so musicians needed to replicate all the multi-tracked instrumental nuance occupying their songs, their performances have always leaned more toward the swaggering ’60s-garage side of their psychedelic antecedents.

That energy can’t always be measured in beats per minute. “Do the Trick” has a ballad pace, but creates plenty of momentum with its pulsing keyboards, tasteful harmonies and lively, varied percussion. Others, like “These Days,” strut like a forgotten Strokes trying to find its way back to “Last Nite.”

The band even delivers a raging live freak-out in “Warrior,” which sets a riff

reminiscent of the Kinks’ “Lola” on the Jefferson Airplane. “It’s just recorded live and it was a party,” says Leamon.

“Just a straight up party.”

The addition of Manos was intended to improve their ability to bring their multi-faceted arrangements to life.

Capable of playing several instruments, he’s taken a load off rhythm guitarist Frank McElroy and keyboardist Zach Miller, who used to have to work out all the live extras between themselves.

But like the addition of Slick, Manos’ presence also seems to be pushing the band toward a less overdubbed approach.

t’s rare for people to live out their childhood dreams, but the Diminico brothers are doing just that.

Ever since the two were 13 and 12 years old, respectively, Doug and Dan Diminico have practiced and played together in a family trio that included their father. Eighteen years later, the siblings comprise the core membership of Smooth Money Gesture, a funk/jam/psych-rock quintet with a non-stop tour schedule.

Doug says Smooth Money Gesture was originally the name of a cover band the brothers played in while living in Alaska from 2002 to 2005. When they finalsee SMOOTH Page 26

ly settled in Colorado, the tunes switched to originals, and the band blossomed to six, then five, members.

As the group expanded, so did the band’s sonic palette.

“I feel like the music has always stayed the same — at least the styles that go into it,” says Doug. “Even when we listen to early recordings, it can sound totally different, but yet I can still hear the many styles that go into it. If you listen to the CD that we have available, you’ll find these bluegrass moments, hard rock moments and so many others. There’s a lot going on, and we all like a lot of dif-

ferent types of music. We don’t really limit ourselves to one style.”

The disparate styles are a by-product of their varied tastes and background. Doug says he and Dan were both fans of the grunge movement when they first started playing music.

Bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden were early influences that eventually gave way to the Grateful Dead and Phish.

When listening to the band, it’s possible to hear those tastes coming through the music, but the most interesting flavors are the bluegrass inflections found throughout. When the two moved to

Smooth Money Gesture is playing the Fox Theatre this Thursday with Kung Fu, a quick stop as they swing through Colorado on their way through the Midwest. While some bands struggle to find tour stops, SMG will have played in 10 different states this year before February is even finished. Doug says he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“It’s a great time to be out there.

We all love to play music, and that’s why we’ve booked so many shows this

year already. It’s just a fun time for us to play music every night, hang out with the band and then talking about the show on the next long drive.

When someone wants to drive, everyone else can just relax. So our goal right now is just to play as many shows as possible, and we’ve set ourselves up to do that.”

The beauty of playing out so much comes from the unexpected nature of the shows. Doug says recent shows have been very good for the band, especially as they’ve developed their sound and their light show.

“We had an awesome time in Park City, Utah,” Doug says. “There’s a small city right around there that was somehow really good. We really didn’t expect that. Even in Idaho, we didn’t expect anything and it was the other way around. Sometimes you expect a lot in terms of an audience reaction and you get nothing, and then sometimes the opposite is true.”

With so much touring, Doug says he and the rest of Smooth Money Gesture have no plans to rest if given some down time. Instead, he has more than enough plans to last the rest of the year.

“We’re really wanting to do an East Coast tour, mainly in the Northeast, but we’ll see what happens,” he says. “That will come along with some other places that we may have not been to yet in the Midwest.

We’d also like to do a string of shows back in Alaska again, but that’s really expensive, so we’ll see what happens.

Then I’m pushing for another CD. Obviously not all of that can happen in one year, but we’ll try to fit in as much as we can.”

move toward since 2007’s obsessively beautiful We All Belong, which they fiddled with for practically two years. One problem is that between songwriters Leamon and guitarist Scott McMicken, the band can come up with as many as 50 songs every album cycle — requiring them to narrow the pool down ahead of time, since it’s hard to learn that many songs well.

The other is that once you’re in the studio, it’s hard to resist tarting the songs up.

“I think as a recording band we’re going to move a little more in that live direction. The ambition for the band — on probably the last three records — has been to get the songs, get the demos learned, go woodshed as a band for a couple weeks, then record it live,” Leamon says.

“Of course, I think what I’m saying now I’ve said about every record since Toothbrush. We shall see.”

The film shrewdly does not tip its hand about who’s living and who’s dying.

Neeson vs. wolf

T

he title 8 Million Ways to Die was already taken, so The Grey had to settle for The Grey, named for the plus-size wolves waging war on the desperate human survivors of an Alaskan wilderness plane crash.

Tough situation. Frostbite. Wolf bite.

Drowning. Falling from great heights.

Harsh outcomes abound for both man and beast.

And yet the film takes some time to let its characters ruminate, by way of dialogue, on their circumstances, which gives The Grey a distinctly late-20thcentury feel. The film stars Liam Neeson, a bona fide 59-year-old action hero, as an oil refinery sharpshooter charged with keeping predators at bay.

Working from a short story by Ian Mackenzie Jeffers, who wrote the script’s first draft, co-writer and director Joe Carnahan places the formidable Neeson in the middle of a scary and

bracing picture with more on its mind than advertised. Some of The Grey is phony, and it was a mistake to make the rogue wolves large enough to be mistaken for critters out of Twilight. But Carnahan is smart enough to keep fullview images of the antagonists in check.

And there’s an actual human element to go with Carnahan’s Jack Londoninspired depiction of humans against the elements.

We meet Neeson’s character, a heartbroken loner named John Ottway, on the verge of suicide and thinking back, obsessively, to the woman who got away. His demons temporarily quelled, Ottway boards a small plane with his fellow refinery workers and in one of the most nerve-racking flights ever put on film, the aircraft runs afoul

of bad weather and crashes. (For a turbulence wimp like me, this scene was not easy.)

Eight survive, at first. Ottway, the alpha male, knows what he’s doing. So does the alpha male of the wolf pack on their trail. The rest of the humans are played by an interesting ensemble of non-stars, including Dermot Mulroney, Dallas Roberts, Nonso Anozie, Frank Grillo and others. The film shrewdly does not tip its hand about who’s living and who’s dying.

Carnahan indulges himself in ways most filmmakers would avoid: He gives several of the men, for example, extended soul-searching discussions about God’s existence (or not), about owning up to one’s fears, about the precarious nature of love. The best parts of The

A

man edges along the 21st-story ledge of a midtown New York City hotel.

He’s an ex-cop and a convicted thief on the lam, straight out of Sing Sing, and he’s threatening suicide. Sam Worthington, of Avatar and Clash of the Titans, plays this character, Nick Cassidy, and it is odd to see Worthington on a precipice without winged beasts or blue friendlies buzzing about his head. The only thing buzzing in Man on a Ledge are little gnats of narrative improbability.

Like the more antic Tower Heist a few months back, Man on a Ledge exploits populist rage against corrupt bazillionaires as it spins a tale of a high-risk revenge burglary in the high-rent Manhattan district.

Unlike Tower Heist, though, Man on a Ledge confines its protagonist to a thin sliver of concrete for much of its 102 minutes. While Nick is up to something out there, on the ledge, a police negotiator played by Elizabeth Banks argues with another cop (Edward Burns, doing what he should be doing for a living — acting, that is, instead of writing/directing) about how to talk him down. Banks is a skillful actress, particularly in comedy, but she doesn’t easily suggest “hard-bitten.”

You can say this for screenwriter Pablo F. Fenjves’ story: It stays busy. It starts in the hotel, moves to the ledge and then swoops back into a one-month-earlier Boulder Weekly

Grey connect the interior lives of these roughnecks with their newfound and lethal obstacles to safety.

Carnahan made Smokin’ Aces (which I hated) and The A-Team (which wasn’t bad, actually); wisely, he shot and edited The Grey like neither of those pictures.

This one’s more relaxed in its rhythms, a brooding drama about a brooding man in a terrible situation. Only occasionally are there computer-generated ravines that must be leapt across; thankfully much of the action was shot in northern British Columbia, and a lot of the wind and snow and scenery is real.

flashback, explaining how Nick got there, why he went to prison in the first place and how he managed to turn a furlough for his father’s funeral into an opportunity for escape. Nick asserts his innocence regarding the theft of the $40 million Monarch diamond, the one owned by a monster capitalist played, or rather sniveled,

by Ed Harris.

So many details eat away at our engagement with this picture. Why wouldn’t the negotiator notice Nick has an earpiece and a habit of murmuring aloud? Why does the distance between the ledge and the pavement seem to vary from shot to shot, depending on whether we’re watching actor-harnessed action filmed on location or actors doing their thing on a mock-up of the

location? Why does the guy in the crowd below holler “Attica! Attica!” as if that weren’t one of the signature moments from Dog Day Afternoon?

Jamie Bell plays Nick’s younger brother, in cahoots with his fiance, Genesis Rodriguez, whose preferred heist wardrobe is the Salma Hayek lingerie line from After the Sunset. Anthony Mackie, a terrific actor, brings some artful ambiguity to the role of Nick’s colleague from his police force days.

Danish director Asger Leth gets the job done with minimal style and a generally indistinct tone. The supporting players in Man on a Ledge bring more to the party than the leads, and my suspension of disbelief seems to have gotten hung up in traffic while attempting to cross the suspension-of-disbelief bridge from the Brooklyn side.

omen’s hands are too warm, the argument goes, to handle the ingredients. They’d damage the raw fish. The perfume or makeup or lotion on women’s hands would ruin the salmon and tuna. Of course, these are animals that live in some of the filthiest ecosystems this side of the Death Star’s trash compactor.

Yuki Sanda, sushi chef at Boulder’s Sushi Zanmai, has heard every excuse in the book — both in her native Japan and in the U.S., where she relocated in 1995. And the arguments still hang around, Sanda says, even today.

Sanda is part of a growing group of women being given the opportunity to work as sushi chefs, a position typically — almost entirely — held by men until recently. And she says that she enjoys the work, but it comes with a certain amount of resistance among traditionalists in the sushi world.

“People think we have very warm hands [and] it’s not good for the raw fish. That was the main reason I heard,” she says. “And many women put on makeup or [get a] manicure, so that’s not good for the very delicate cuisine.” (By the way, there’s scientific evidence that women’s hands are a little bit colder on average.)

These aren’t some long-past prejudices, either, especially in Japan, where women are still shut out of the position.

“It’s very rare in Japan,” Sanda says. “I haven’t seen any. I heard [of ] a few people, but I haven’t seen.”

She notes that there’s a markedly different mindset in the U.S. than in Japan.

“It’s more open-minded, I think, here. In Japan, a little bit more conservative, I think,” she says.

“Especially my boss is very open-minded. He’s Japanese, he’s from the southern part of Japan.”

Her boss, Naoto Kanda, shocked Sanda when she started at Zanmai in 1995. She’d just arrived from Japan, having worked for years as a kitchen chef for her parents at a restau-

rant in Osaka. She says she was all set to take the same job at Zanmai, but Kanda had other plans.

“I arrived as a kitchen chef here,” she says. “And my boss gave me the opportunity to be [a sushi chef ], so I was kind of shocked. When he asked me, ‘Why don’t you do sushi chef?’ I refused, because I [had] no idea woman sushi chef existed.”

Kanda — who had employed several women before Sanda — won out, and Sanda began working as a sushi chef soon after.

“My mother was so surprised when I started,” she says.

“It was very funny. She was wondering, how I can do it?

Can I do it? And also her restaurant’s customers, they’re surprised, my friends in Osaka — everybody is surprised.”

A healthy dose of inequality between the genders keeps women out of sushi kitchens — inequality Sanda says she hopes is in the past.

“In Japan, right now, it’s pretty much equal,” she says.

t was once a happy place, and now it’s bitter.

The Bitter Bar occupies the Walnut Street space previously inhabited by the Happy Noodle House, which, like its successor, was operated by the Big Red F Restaurant Group.

Given the new enterprise’s heavy focus on libations, it’s unsurprising that this spot retains a hip, lounge-like vibe that lends itself well to casual cocktails or an informal dinner.

Drinks range from original award-winning concoctions such as the Gone Fishin’, featuring naval-strength rum and ginger liqueur, to old chestnuts like Irish Coffee. However, the attention paid to the drinks doesn’t detract from the food.

I discovered this on a recent evening when friend Shirly and I decided to split the $35 prix fixe dinner, along with an entrée and small plates.

When we ordered, there was a brief moment of panic, as the light was too dim to read the menu, and I feared I was growing old and blind. Fortunately, only one of those was the case, and our enterprising server brought over a floor lamp to facilitate our reading.

The first round of the prix fixe dinner consisted of a decadent, velvety duck pâté. The undeniable richness of the smooth liver was pleasantly offset

by a bright-tasting red onion jam. We also ordered two seafood small plates, the first being an $11 oil-cured hamachi tuna, served with tapenade and tomato. The tomato had the complex flavor associated with San Marzano fruit, and the olive relish packed a punch. Unfortunately, both of these assertive preparations overshadowed the subtle flavor and texture of the tuna.

We fared better with a $9 bowl of mussels in a pork and corn broth. The

broth was especially compelling, and lent itself to frequent dunkings of toast. The prix fixe salad featured a duck confit with an endearingly crisp exterior and properly moist and tender meat inside.

Humboldt Fog goat cheese, fresh arugula, sweet pear and a subtle dressing allowed the bird to properly shine through.

Shirly ordered the $15 Thursday night special, lobster risotto. The kitchen wisely resisted the temptation to weigh down this dish, and a light broth with a whisper of seafood savor underscored the fresh, clean taste of the crustacean. A smattering of greens contributed color and vibrancy. I bypassed the Delicata squash gnocchi for the short rib, ricotta and mushroom lasagna. This was one of the better lasagnas I’ve had, carrying an almost stewlike heft and surprisingly nuanced flavor resulting from the depth of meat and mushroom, and the cheese’s creaminess.

For dessert, we had the subtly spicy gingerbread cake sided with ice cream.

One of the more unusual, albeit curiously compelling, elements was a garnish of caramel bacon popcorn, punctuated by crisp porcine bits. I couldn’t help but wonder if this masterstroke was inspired by someone who witnessed

The Bitter Bar’s culinary strengths lie in simpler preparations such as duck pâté and the lasagna. While a $35 prix fixe dinner isn’t cheap, we were pleasantly surprised by the ample portions, leaving us with plenty to share.

Whether it’s for a drink or informal repast prepared with flair, there’s no bitterness at this bar.

The second installment in Twisted Pine Brewery’s Twisted Artisan Ale project will be released at noon on Saturday, Feb. 4, at Twisted Pine’s Walnut Street ale house. February’s beer is an Imperial India Black Ale named Canis Lupulus. The resinous, dark, double-hopped beer carries an evergreen and lemon scent. Canis weighs in at 10 percent ABV and 90 IBU. The label for Canis Lupulus features a piece called “Silver Stars and Moon” by local Boulder artist Chris Huang, who will be on hand for the release Saturday at the brewery. The Artisan Ale Project is a yearlong celebration of Colorado’s artistic creativity. Each month in 2012, Twisted Pine will release a new, small-batch beer in 750 ml bottles with labels featuring a different Colorado artist.

“But a long time ago, the woman was very low-estimated, underestimated,” Sanda says. “So that’s one of the reasons, I think.”

But she says there’s evidence that the past isn’t too far gone. Even at Zanmai she’s had customers unhappy to have their sushi made by a woman.

“A few people, they’re surprised. Especially Japanese people, when they come to eat and they sit in front of me, they say, ‘Are you gonna cook for me?’ It’s a — ” Sanda says, then pauses. “I was very disappointed for somebody to say that to me.”

A block away, life isn’t much different for Hapa on Pearl sushi chef Brenda Wong, a five-year veteran who says she’s seen many of the same issues Sanda describes.

“People make comments,” Wong, an American who started at Hapa in 2006, says. “It’s like, is this 2012? Can’t women do anything they want?”

Wong, like Sanda, says that customers usually simply express surprise that a woman is working behind the sushi bar.

“I get comments all the time: ‘Oh, cool, you’re a chick,’” she says. “But I’ve worked with a lot of female sushi chefs. When people say they’ve never seen one before, I want to say, ‘Have you ever been out before?’”

Five years ago, Wong got a start similar to the one Sanda got back in the ’90s: Management just made the call.

“I didn’t [want to]. I worked front-of-house and they put a knife in my hand and told me to start slicing. It was never anything I sought out,” she says, although she says she does enjoy the work.

Wong says she isn’t sure why, but she thinks there are more female sushi chefs in Boulder per capita than in larger cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles.

“Here, it’s a lot more acceptable,” she says.

But she has faced some of the same old sexism.

“There’s looks you get from customers,” she says. “Like when it’s me and four male chefs, some people migrate toward the males. But rarely does that happen.”

Wong even has a response ready for anybody who tells her women’s hands are too warm for raw fish: She says, with a laugh, “Women are way more cold-blooded than men.”

Kidding around at Keystone

I

taught my wife, a blonde Midwest beauty, to ski when she was 20 — or rather, she allowed me to teach her. We always joke we don’t need any marriage counseling after those tear-filled seasons on the blue ice runs of Vermont — no appearances for us on Dr. Phil’s couches. And the heavenly runs we share now two decades later under bright bluebird skies in Colorado at spots like Keystone are all the sweeter after some, well, “intense” discussions in the dark redolent hardwoods back in the day.

So it wasn’t lightly that I bellied up to the task of teaching our 5-year-old son Logan to ski. “Labor of love” is right.

Fortunately, your child learns to walk innately. Imagine trying to describe the mechanics of elemental mobility and coaching a mini person to put one foot in front of another. Now visualize trying to do this at 9,000 feet, in freezing temperatures, with long plastic sticks stuck to his feet. I always tell my buddies sans kids that in parenting every day is an epic. Life before children is emotional 2D, and now you are in 3D with corresponding highs and lows. When, last year, Logan made his first true glide in the fall line for just a few feet on the greenest baby bunny run, I felt a high that matched any of the deepest powder days ever bestowed on me.

Set yourself up for success is my mantra — parental and otherwise. These days, our favorite place to point the 105-cm skis of Master Logan is Keystone. This mountain see KEYSTONE Page 48

is, in my humble opinion, the most kid friendly and user friendly resort around — admittedly, it’s a popular favorite and can get crowded.

Tag that kid in neon to keep track of him in the crowd.

At Keystone you get close in free parking at River Run Village, and a pretty walk through the village, not a brutal schlep and bus ride from a remote parking lot that seems located in another time zone. If the crew needs a pit stop pre-ski (and when couldn’t Daddy use another coffee?), Inkspot and Spoon are excellent affordable choices within minutes of the gondola.

Which brings us to the next plus: The gondola is a climate-controlled way to get you up plenty of vertical and regroup with the inevitable mitten, goggle, neckwarmer, God knows-whatelse readjustment. A friend of mine’s mom said that, after a decade plus of being sherpa to her kid’s skis, she insisted that, as adults, they carry hers.

Great idea, Logan buddy, can’t wait till 2022!

Actually, Keystone has cleverly addressed this with full sized cargo wagons distributed by smiling staff to help you haul kids and gear from the parking lot to the lifts. Guess who was the mule? Sadly, I got a bit of head rush from pulling the wagon. Good training for hiking the alpine bowls, I suppose.

The staff at Keystone makes a huge effort to embrace kids. Logan receives, and truly loves, multiple high fives from the lifties and ski patrol on every visit.

His helmet is now proudly covered with stickers from the area, and each marks a

day of priceless family bonding.

On the more watchful side, the mountain crew is genuinely on guard at every turn to help Junior up after a crash, give them a boost onto chairlifts, and we even had a ski patrol lift up an on trail sign that Logan had managed to bear hug/tbone … much to his/our

delight.

Central to any kid-centric visit are the regular Kidtopia weekends with visits to the massive mountaintop snowfort, disco tubing, music, and arts and crafts events. If for some reason your kiddo resists bedtime (and when don’t they?) Keystone offers the largest night skiing operation in Colorado.

Another superlative is the Outpost Lodge — at 11,444 feet, it’s home to the country’s highest full service gourmet restaurant, the Alpenglow Stube, offering such delicacies as Colorado lamb with arugula pesto and venison in a cotes-du-rhone sauce.
