GMOs and Roundup (Re: “GMOs,” cover story, Feb. 10.)

The article about “Frankenfoods” by Jefferson Dodge was well-written and included quotes from some credible sources. However, it missed an important point. The salient issue concerning GM crops is that they are genetically manipulated specifically to withstand the herbicide Roundup. Cute little name isn’t it — “Roundup”? Sounds like something you would hear from the Marlboro Man. The latest scientific research carried out by a multinational scientific team headed by Professor Andres Carrasco, head of the Laboratory of Molecular Embryology at the University of Buenos Aires Medical School and a member of Argentina’s National Council of Scientific and Technical Research, concluded that Roundup, in far lower concentrations than used in agriculture, is linked to birth defects. Roundup is one of the most highly toxic substances in agriculture. GM crops may be good or they may be bad. The point is that Roundup has been proven to be bad for the yet to be born. Some may not have a problem with having Roundup sprayed on their Cheerios, but those yet to be born may not appreciate this point of view.

or me, the most significant statistic coming out of this year’s Super Bowl was not the 31-25 score in the Green Bay Packers’ hard-fought victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Nor was it the $1.3 billion cost of the new, monstrously huge football palace built by the Dallas Cowboys, where the game was played. Rather, the number that impresses me is 111,968.

That is the number of people who own the Packers — each of whom is an ordinary Green Bay resident and devoted cheesehead.

Unlike all 31 of the other pro football teams, the Packers are not the personal plaything of some rich family or profiteering corporate consortium.

Instead, it is a nonprofit community enterprise owned by local fans and managed by them as a project “intended to promote community welfare.”

Those 111,000 Green Bay citizens elect the team’s Boulder Weekly

When I go out to hike, I do not want to have to worry about dog behavior or see dogs off trail pooping or chasing cows, while their owners stand by helplessly because their animals are off leash and not under voice control.

helplessly about it on the shock-jock call-in shows — as citizens of this small city they can talk directly to the team management, or as shareholders they can vote to change managers.

Interestingly, in a time when politicos and pundits across the country are demonizing the very idea of public ownership, the good folks of Green Bay are showing that it works beautifully and adds immeasurable strength to the community. Not only are these Green Bayers Super Bowl champs again this year, but they’ve produced more NFL championships in their city than any other set of owners have done.

Make “green tags” count (Re: “A dog’s life,” cover story, Feb. 3.) I loved the article on dogs in open spaces from last week.

I’m one of the few dog owners (3-year-old spaniel) who think that we need to tighten restrictions on dogs in our open spaces, national forests and wilderness areas. I think that if we do not do something soon, dogs will be banned in more places, and I’ll have fewer options for going hiking with my best friend.

I think we should radically change the so-called “green tag” system by which, in certain areas, dogs are permitted to run loose. The number of dogs I’ve seen running off unsupervised, trampling vegetation, disturbing wildlife and/or approaching other dogs and people unchecked by their owners is ridiculous.

Too many dog owners know little about what a dog’s body/facial gestures mean (I recommend reading The Other End of the Leash, by Patricia McConnell), and, as a result, they really don’t understand their dog. Dog people are awesome people, but many of them (just like parents of little humans) can also be entitled and self-absorbed.

One person quoted in this article said, (A) “There are some steep areas on those trails … (B) “Dogs are part of nature, and they should be free … (C) When I see people with leashed dogs … it means they do not trust their dogs.”

Well, (A) Train your dog not to pull, get a hands-free leash and walk with a walking staff. While you make a good point, this still implies that you are lazy about training your dog. I don’t ding you for that; so am I! But you cannot have the rewards of a well-trained dog without taking on the responsibilities, including training. I’ve had my dog, leashed, in wilderness areas without incident.

And, (B) I’m a part of nature, too, but understand I cannot leave my excrement out in the open, should not trample vegetation and most definitely should not disturb the wildlife that live in wild areas. Your dog is natural, but not wild, and should be controlled by voice or leash.

(C) You are correct. I do not trust my dog to be off leash. You know why?

Because I did not choose (dog training is really all about choice) to put in the time to train my dog to have excellent recall and “heel” commands, and when I am hiking I do not want to think about what my dog is doing, so he has to be leashed as I cannot keep him in “heel.”

Regarding the “green tag” program: The cost to even purchase a green tag should be raised to at least $75 (with a discount for those who put in a certain number of hours volunteering for trail restoration, wildlife rehab or animal shelters) for the initial purchase, and a portion of that money should go toward the services of a qualified dog trainer who will run a test of between five to 10 dogs at a time (cheaper to do multiple dogs) to check their recall, “heel” responses and their responses to other dogs.

Dogs that fail on recall, “heel” or show any measure of aggression toward other dogs will fail the test and not receive a green tag until they can be retested. If your dog is leash-aggressive, that sucks, but you can do behavioral work to fix that — if you are willing to commit to the time to train your dog.

Watching a video is malarkey. I could do that, get a green tag and I have already said my dog doesn’t have that level of obedience.

Renewing your dog’s green tag should be $25/year ($15 for additional dogs in the household), which will go toward upkeep of open spaces, including ranger salaries and management of the program.

Reductions can be granted based on income levels and volunteer commitments, as mentioned above. I also support fees for dog parks in the form of two-year tags for $15. The money could then go to upkeep of the parks themselves.

I think it is pathetic that some people’s environmental ethic doesn’t extend to the dog at the end of the leash.

Danish is right on fuel (Re: “An open letter to the members of Congress,” Danish Plan, Feb. 10). At last, I got excited reading something.

Paul Danish’s “Open letter” is a delight and absolutely a must-read. However, I don’t believe that what was not done by Congress in the past 38 years will be done in the next 38 years, no matter who sits on Capitol Hill. Freeing America from imported oil is a dead horse. We will continue to rely on Saudi oil until the last drop of crude is recovered from the (already ailing) supergiant oil fields of the Saudis. We most probably will pay for this drop $10,000 or so.

Despite my disillusion from our representatives in Washington, I am writing to highlight a few more things in regard to our ability to produce our own liquid fuels. Danish rightly mentions the mature technologies turning natural gas and coal into gasoline and diesel. We see LETTERS Page 9

f you put THC in a lollipop, it will end up in a child’s mouth.

That’s the reasoning behind House Bill 1250, which would ban the sale of edible forms of medical marijuana. The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Cindy Acree, R-Aurora, claims she became aware that pot brownies, beverages and candy were accidentally being ingested by kids and landing them in the emergency room. She wants to stop this before some child ends up very, very stoned.

OK, she didn’t say that. What she did say is this: “I’ve never heard of anybody dying from it, so that’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about kids that have never exhibited psychotic episodes that end up having reactions or young children who have reactions.”

Of course, she didn’t offer any proof that such incidents had occurred or proof that edible/drinkable medical marijuana was to blame. When asked specifically which medical experts she’d lined up to testify about these regrettable and distressing incidents, she said she didn’t know yet who they would be.

Instead, she talked about the fact that the FDA hasn’t studied marijuana or established safe doses. This presents a safety concern for patients, she says.

“It’s unlike any other pharmaceutical, where somebody has a big interest in it so the pharmaceutical companies actually spend millions to study it, do test studies and blah blah blah,” she

said. “We all know this stuff ’s been around forever, but nobody’s studied it or reported it if they have.”

Blah blah blah, indeed.

What Rep. Acree is missing is that medical marijuana (MMJ) isn’t a pharmaceutical. If MMJ has one thing going for it, it’s that Big Pharma — the profit-driven industry that does tests on drugs, suppresses the results and then releases unsafe chemical drugs onto the market only to withdraw them after people have died — hasn’t been able to exploit marijuana. There’s little that the pharmaceutical laboratory needs to do to make marijuana safe or effective or available to anyone who wants it.

But, yes, marijuana has been studied. Millions of trials are conducted each day across the country by willing volunteers, who are satisfied enough with the results to repeat these experiments the next day. I admit to conducting some trials myself when I was in junior high and high school. (I am not a marijuana user now, medical or recreational.)

In fact, the medicinal uses of marijuana were discovered by people conducting these studies on their own.

Now that MMJ is a thriving industry, lawmakers seem to be in a rush to control it in the name of safety. Why? Acree insists that it’s a public safety issue.

“We’re at the front of this huge industry, and I also am concerned that we’re going to have patients who are relying on people who are developing this big money stream who may not have their best interests at heart,” she said. “How do we protect patients so they don’t get priced out of the very product they wanted access to and it doesn’t get mixed with things they don’t want?”

That’s a very good question. How do we protect patients so they don’t get priced out of the product they need?

When it comes to all other drugs, we don’t. We let people get “priced out” every day. If you don’t have health insurance and the antibiotic you need is still under patent, you can expect to cough up a lung before our state lawmakers help you out. If Acree wants medical marijuana to be treated like any other pharmaceutical, then ensuring accessibility and affordability are the very least of her concerns.

And in this case, government interference might be telling someone with terminal cancer or serious mobility issues that they have to buy medical marijuana and then bake their own pot brownies at home if they don’t want to smoke the drug, even if doing so presents serious struggles for them.

Believe it or not, people are smart enough to manage the “dosing” on marijuana themselves. An acquaintance with chronic pain issues finds the brownies from her dispensary to be too strong. And guess what she does? She eats a half of a brownie, something she discovered through trial and error — without Acree or the legislature holding her hand.

If medical marijuana is ending up in the hands of children, let’s deal with that problem. But let’s not remove a viable, helpful product from those who need it. And most of all let’s not interfere with MMJ patients’ lives in the name of “safety.”

Claiming to want to protect people when what you really want to do is control them is the ultimate in big government manipulation.

call these technologies gas-to-liquids (GTL) and coal-to-liquids (CTL). I have been involved in the development and scale-up of such technologies during the past 10 years and have patents (as inventor) in this field. Being quite familiar with this option of synthetic transportation fuels from our non-conventional fossil resources, I would like to add to Danish, as follows.

America has coal that may last for 300 years if used to replace crude oil as a source of transportation fuels at today’s consumption rate. Coupled with our renewable biomass, we may have enough carbonaceous raw material for gasoline and diesel for the next 1,200 years. We may even extend this period if we add natural gas. In a “dream” scenario, we shall stop wasting natural gas and coal for firing power plants and have all our electricity generated from nuclear energy. Our entire transportation fleet will use advanced, more sophisticated and highly energy-efficient engines. And we will be blessed by uninterrupted streams of reasonably priced synthetic fuels that are far better in quality than oil-derived fuels. Synthetic liquid fuels have better combustion properties and higher octane (for gasoline) and cetane (for diesel), and they are entirely free of contaminants — sulfur, nitrogen, metals, particulates. So they are much healthier to use and more friendly to our environment.

Consider a few more things: The implementation of GTL and CTL (and later, BTL — biomass-to-liquid) technologies will create tens of thousands of new sustainable jobs in the U.S., jobs that cannot be outsourced. From the construction, operation and maintenance of GTL/CTL plants, our government will recover perhaps $100 billion a year in taxes! And guess who will buy our synthetic gasoline and diesel? Yes, Saudi Arabia and the Emirates! So, the petrodollars will come back to America instead of going to the Jihadists.

But don’t worry; this will not happen. Congress is there to spend taxpayers’ money carefully. Oil prices are always fluctuating and OPEC could again sell a barrel for $15 if it so desires, to knock down any competition.

Congress will not appreciate that this happened just because we had spent $300 billion to build our synthetic fuel plants, and that we have saved hundreds of billions of dollars by not continuing to pay $100 a barrel or more. Instead, Washington’s mindset is that we should be patient enough waiting for oil prices to drop again on their own due to “market-driven” circumstances.

Therefore, the only sure thing in this country is to continue to spend our dollars on stimulus and bailout programs.

This at least is politically correct. As to our energy economy — we shall keep Boulder Weekly

“going solar,” building more ugly wind farms until there is no wind and land left unturned in Kansas and Oklahoma, and soon drive electric cars to save money at the gas pump (thus starving the oil business, hurrah!) and put this money, instead, in the big pockets of Xcel Energy and companies alike. We will live in a very happy world. This perhaps may not satisfy our country’s energy needs, but it will certainly please noisy environmentalists and “green energy” activists. Go vegan The U.S. Dietary Guidelines released this week by the U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services are continuing a 30-year trend of recommending replacement of animal products and other fatty foods in our diet with vegetables, fruits and whole grains.

The recommendations reflect widespread concern with the epidemic of obesity and other precursors of killer diseases, particularly among our children.

In a National Public Radio interview, distinguished Harvard University Professor of Public Health Walter Willett complained about the guidelines’ lack of transparency in failing to call for an outright reduction in meat consumption.

He should know. In 1977, drawing on two years of hearings by the Senate Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs chaired by Sen. George McGovern, Willett authored the original “Dietary Goals for the United States.” When the meat industry learned that the report’s key recommendation was to reduce meat consumption, it forced McGovern to destroy all copies of the report and to replace “meat” with “saturated fat.” It then abolished the committee, voted McGovern out of office and taught government bureaucrats never to challenge meat consumption again.

To this day, “saturated fats” remains a code word for meat, dairy and eggs.

Working stiffs Should men on welfare be able to use their public assistance cards in strip club ATMs? Colorado lawmakers say no.

On Valentine’s Day, Colorado’s House of Representatives approved on second reading a bill that would bar those who receive government assistance from using their welfare cards in strip joints.

The vote sends a strong message to the state’s poorest residents: Want to gawk at tits and ass? Want to stuff a $20 down that hot stripper’s tiny G-string? Want to liquor up so you’ll be brave enough to ask her out? Then get a damned job.

State law already prohibits people from using public assistance cards at ATMs in casinos, at racetracks and in liquor stores.

Now you know why, as the good book tells us, rich people rarely make it to heaven. You want to sin? Pay for it yourself.

Spinning class We were so dizzy from the spinning in that last mass e-mail newsletter from CU President Bruce Benson that we had to sit down.

Turns out that the $785,000, 18-months-late branding project wasn’t just about creating a new logo.

Whew! We were worried that it was a waste of money there for a second.

Benson explains that there were just too many different, competing messages and images emanating from CU’s various colleges, schools, departments, centers and institutes. We know, we hear you, that’s a shocking and unconscionable situation for a complex four-campus university system with 56,000 students, almost 4,000 faculty and a $2.6 billion annual budget. People might get confused!

Benson also points out that interest on university investments — not tax dollars or tuition — were used to pay for the project. (Hmm, we seem to remember certain past presidents giving that money to the campuses to improve things like diversity, technology and, um, was that other one? Oh, yeah, education.)

Then Benson lists all of the surveys and interviews that were done in the project. Even a peer analysis of six universities similar to CU! Six! That’s awesome.

And just think of all the money we’ll save printing a single logo on letterhead and business cards, instead of dozens of different ones! (Huh?) At the end of this highly illuminating message, finally, is public acknowledgement of one of the real drivers of this project: the oft-whispered-about fundraising campaign that is reportedly ready to be announced this spring after years and years of waiting out the recession.

The emergence of the campaign, the name of which shall not be spoken, may be the best local economic news of all. Almost makes you forget about the $785,000 branding study.

But if you haven’t forgotten about it, there is always the illusion of feeling like your voice has been heard. Kinder bud A Denver-based company is stepping in to fill the social couponing void by offering daily deals to medical marijuana patients. The company, mmjDeals.com, aims to increase patients’ access to their drug of choice by making medical marijuana, which isn’t covered by group insurance or Medicaid, more affordable.

Just like other online couponing organizations, mmjDeals.com would enable people to opt in for coupon e-mails and would then send them one deal each day, offering up to 80 percent off any product related to medical marijuana.

It’s a bold business move, particularly given the way banks and other businesses treat MMJ dispensaries like pariahs. It also breaks a boundary that Big Pharma has been reluctant to break — treating medicine like a consumer good.

Wouldn’t it be great if the big pharmaceuticals handed out coupons? Imagine getting 80 percent off on birth control pills or insanely expensive anti-retrovirals for HIV or chemo drugs. Hey, if health care is going to operate on a capitalist model, there ought to be something in it for the consumer.

BOULDER INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL BRINGS CELEBS, CLOUT TO BOULDER BY ADAM PERRY

t seems nerve-wracking. Showing more than 50 films over four days at numerous venues in one small city.

Hosting world-class celebrities including Oliver Stone and James Franco. Organizing a mostly volunteer staff of almost 300 people. Seated on a couch in the Boulder International Film Festival offices in downtown Boulder a week before the seventh edition of their pride and joy, one would expect the sisters who created BIFF to be biting their nails. But Robin and Kathy Beeck reveal a surprisingly low level of stress.

“It gets so tiring when you’re sitting inside watching films all day, but it’s the perfect time of year for it,” says Robin, who watches around 300 films during each year’s BIFF selection process. “But we’re happy to have this festival in February. There’s nothing better on a winter day than sitting inside a movie theater and getting away from the cold.”

Together, Robin and the BIFF selection committee watched almost 1,000 films in 2010 before whittling it down to the 50-or-so films that made the 2011 cut. Most astonishing in all the myriad

facets of preparation, however, might be that Robin and her sister Kathy still get along so well. They arrived in Boulder back in 1976 and have been a two-woman film-loving powerhouse ever since.

“We’re a very, very close family,” Robin says. “Kathy has her area, which is sponsorships and business and different things. I’m programming. So we bring totally different strengths to the festival, which works out really well because there aren’t a lot of things that we can argue about.

And we live together — did you know that? We work together during the day, and we live together at the same time. My parents brought us up very well.”

Speaking of the quest to get along, perhaps the most anticipated screenings at this year’s BIFF are the three showings of Freedom Riders, the magnificent documentary about the efforts of black and white activists who, in 1961, attempted to sit next to each other on a Greyhound bus trip through the deep South and suffered unimaginably violent consequences. f all the films featured at the 2011 Boulder International Film Festival, the most Boulder-centric is Crazy Wisdom. The 90-minute documentary is Los Angeles filmmaker Johanna Demetrakas’ stunning tribute to the late Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, the Tibetan Buddhist who founded Naropa University in 1974. Demetrakas will be on hand for a Q-and-A after the BIFF screening of Crazy Wisdom, which sadly, for such a profound (and profoundly Boulder-related) film, is occurring at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18, at the First United Methodist Church, rather than enjoying prime-time billing at the Boulder Theater.

John Lewis, who took part in the Freedom Ride as a young man and was beaten by an angry Alabama mob for his efforts, will be in attendance for a Q-and-A this weekend.

Lewis spoke at length with Boulder Weekly by phone recently about his harrowing experience (the transcript of which is available at BoulderWeekly. com). It’s a testament to the wellknown strength of the longtime congressman that, if he could go back to 1961, he’d do it all over again.

“I think some of us grew up and came of age on those buses, the same way that we grew up sitting down on lunch counter stools,” Lewis says. “We had to grow up. We became committed. I remember the original group, 13 of us: seven whites and six African Americans. We didn’t know whether we would return, but we had to do it.

People wanted to see change.”

Rep. Jared Polis, the openly gay congressman who represents Boulder, along with Colorado Sen. Mark Udall, will also be in attendance for the Freedom Riders Q-and-A. Polis told

University of Southern California in addition to directing both dramatic and documentary films, met Trungpa in 1971 and kept in touch until his death in 1987. Subsequently, Demetrakas — through four-and-a-half years of active filmmaking and five years of research — was able to capture perhaps the first truly intimate and honest picture of Trungpa’s controversial life.

Watching Crazy Wisdom in Boulder recently with a gathering of current and former Naropa students, it was obvious that Demetrakas succeeded in not only delineating Trungpa’s fascinating escape from Chinese tyranny in Tibet and the meat of his “Shambhala” vision — a peaceful, mindful community amid a dangerously chaotic world — but also

“For Americans of my generation and younger, John Lewis is a living link to our all-too-recent history of racial discrimination,” says Polis, who adds that he imagines “even today, taking a rainbow-painted bus through the deep South” to “fight for LGBT equality.”

Robin Beeck says she was “surprised we hadn’t learned more in school about [the Freedom Riders]” and was moved by the film.

“It’s just horrifying the way things happened back then,” she says. “And having the congressman here is going to be such an honor. We’re having a screening just for students, too, at the library, and Rep. Lewis is going to be there to speak to them afterwards. Can you imagine? It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

what it was like to know “the bad boy of Buddhism” personally. For Naropa students, who are fed a PC version of Trungpa’s life — which notoriously included excessive drinking and sex — Demetrakas’ unflinching portrayal of her former spiritual guide is refreshing.

“The film was not so much about his teachings as it was about him,” she says. “One of the directions that I made to myself was that I wanted to make a film where my audience gets to experience his mind, even a glimpse. I feel like if you experience that, if you go through your own changes, questioning him, questioning his life, questioning where Naropa’s at right now or whatever … see TRUNGPA Page 13

you go beyond that and just be there. I wanted you to experience what being around him was for me. So I hope I got that done a little bit.”

Crazy Wisdom takes viewers through the incredibly archaic Tibet of Trungpa’s youth — he escaped to India via a series of night-time mountain hikes — to his formative years in 1960s England (where a young David Bowie became one of his disciples) to Trungpa’s breakthrough as a legendary spiritual leader and cultural figure in America throughout the ’70s and ’80s.

Recognized as a reincarnate master when he was just 18 months old, Trungpa alternately craved the psychedelic and sexually liberated America of 40 years ago and sought to rid it of what he called “spiritual pride.”

Demetrakas, who will be in attendance for the BIFF screening on Friday, says Trungpa’s upbringing in Tibet paved the way for his effort to become a major force for change in the late 20th century.

“I think he was really fascinated with the West, because he grew up in a place that was like the 16th century in a sense. He grew up in another time, and he was catapulted into the 20th century.

Even in Tibet, he seemed to already

have a sense that the power in the whole world was in the West and that if he was going to save the teachings, which were being systematically destroyed in Tibet by the Chinese, he needed to go to the West. He didn’t need to stay in India or Nepal — he needed to go to the West. That’s where the teachings were most needed, because they had never been there.”

Twenty-four years after Trungpa’s death, his legacy is still alive and well, between the work of his eldest son (Shambhala heir Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche) and the worldwide Shambhala teachings of enthusiasts such as Demetrakas. She says what she learned from Trungpa has had a huge effect on her passionate work as a filmmaker.

“I think that having studied with him — and having studied Buddhism, period, not just with Trungpa — gave me a lot of confidence in staying with the truth as I see it and as I can understand it. Being better at seeing what has energy and what is drained of energy. American films are incredibly ‘in your face,’ and that’s what I mean by energy: understanding what’s going on and being able to meet that energy with a camera and bring it to life.

That’s kind of what he taught me.”

Naropa — which was the first Buddhist institute in the Western Hemisphere when Trungpa brought people like Ram Dass, Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs and Anne Waldman together to create it — plays a key role in Crazy Wisdom, and the insider’s look at the school’s early history the film presents is captivating. A guru who scorned religion as inherently mindless, Trungpa was intent on East and West conflicting with each other — making “sparks fly” — and urging eager (and often confused) students to find themselves rather than follow him.

Grappling after spirituality is dumb, he says in the film, and at one point in the early days, Trungpa toyed with all the hippies in Boulder by inviting them to his home and asking them to bring their marijuana.

“We are burning self-deception,” he chanted over and over as every speck of dope was destroyed in his fireplace. The Naropa faculty should be so bold today. Still, the outrageous behavior Trungpa chose not to hide — becoming paralyzed in a reckless car crash, marrying a 16-year-old American girl, sleeping with students and teachers at Naropa and repeatedly

appearing drunk in public — makes him a polarizing figure even now.

Buddhist historian Rick Fields once wrote that Trungpa “caused more trouble, and did more good, than anyone I’ll ever know.” While it’s true that excess kills, one has to wonder what it was like to be a religious figure caught between a Western world that wanted a “pet guru” and a motherland, Tibet, that wanted Trungpa to be a robed elitist. Near the end of Crazy Wisdom, the title of which comes from the Naropa founder’s mantra that it’s perilous to have your feet too firmly planted in the material or spiritual worlds, Trungpa’s son has the final word on his father’s legacy.

“Either he was crazy, or he was ‘crazy wisdom,’ and there was something amazing about him,” he says.

Demetrakas is more conclusive about the legacy of Trungpa, who died of alcohol-related causes at the early age of 48.

“You know, we’re all going to die.

Trungpa can’t live forever. He had to go on, to move on, and his particular extraordinary style … you can’t make that happen again. That’s who he was, and I was lucky enough to spend some time with him.”

but also the post-film interviews for BIFF. I watch all of the films in advance. I do some kind of research on all of the issues so that I can speak knowledgeably. For instance, two years ago we had a film about the monks in Burma protesting the conditions there, and onstage afterwards we had a Boulder resident who was a former Burmese princess from 50 years ago who lives here. Before that night, not only had I seen the film twice, but I did my research on who this woman is and the life that she led. So that interview went well because I totally knew my subject.

BW: How did you get involved with BIFF? RB: Well, I was very fortunate that for the last year of my tenure at KBCO I was the promotions director.

[BIFF founders] Kathy and Robin [Beeck] came to me, and I cut the promotions deal for KBCO to be the radio sponsor [for BIFF]. We really hit it off because I’m a film fan; I’ve held an Oscars contest for 20 years.

When I left KBCO they came to me and asked if I would help with some projects that they were doing for BIFF. And I’ve just worked for them every year ever since, for five years now.

BW: Is it essentially the same process every year?

RB: Well, it can’t be exactly the same, although there are some commonalities year after year. We, as a committee, sit down in the summertime and say, “Who would we like to come? Who fits what BIFF is about?”

And we look at a number of different people, and we don’t always get our first choice, because these people are very busy. But once those people are chosen and we know they’re coming, that’s when I start doing my research of watching their films, reading what I can, finding things on YouTube, find-

ing other interviews online, and trying to know as much about the person, their work and their life, and who they are, as I can. I look at my job sitting on that stage in two ways: I want to walk that line of making it entertaining but informative. And I try to make that person [I’m interviewing] comfortable by creating a respectful video that we show beforehand, but also by knowing as much as I can about them so that they see that I’ve done the homework to be ready to talk about whatever they want to talk about.

BW: What’s exciting for you about this year?

RB: When people ask me what I want to do when I grow up, I tell them I want to have Charlie Rose’s job, and I feel like I already do, because of BIFF. I feel like this year will be another Charlie Rose weekend for me, because I get to interview James Franco eight days before he hosts the Oscars; Oliver Stone, who arguably is one of the top 10 American film directors of all time; and also the producer and director of our opening-night film, a documentary about the Troubador club in Los Angeles. Being a music fan since the ’60s, to be able to sit with these guys and talk about music and about film — my two biggest loves — is huge for me.

But then, Sunday afternoon I get to be what I think might be a highlight of my life, where I’ll do the postfilm Q-and-A with [U.S. Rep.] John Lewis, after the film Freedom Riders.

As a kid who grew up outside of Washington, D.C., reading the Washington Post every day, and remembers Martin Luther King being killed, it’s a big deal. It’s an honor for me to sit with Rep. Lewis. To think of these four days, of who I will sit and talk to, it makes me feel like I already am Charlie Rose. Just in Colorado.

Get your chill on The Nederland Area Chamber of Commerce will host the 10th Annual Frozen Dead Guy Days on the weekend of March 4-6. A wild and wacky celebration of all things dead, frozen and frigidly fun, Frozen Dead Guy Days has won the Governor’s Award for Best Promotional Event in Colorado and the Reader’s Digest Top Five Winter Festivals in the United States. This year’s festival promises to be the biggest yet, with more events, sponsors and cold craziness.

“The crowds and coverage of last year’s festival means that this year’s activities will draw people throughout the world who are intrigued by our small town, Grandpa Bredo, competition in the cold, and plain silliness,” says Nederland Area Chamber of Commerce President Blue Hessner.

Events take place from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, and you can find the full schedule at www.nederlandchamber. org. The festival includes contests, events and musical entertainment. The Blue Ball and Coffin Races are the most popular attractions.

The festival was founded as a tribute to Grandpa Bredo Morstoel from Norway. After his death due to a heart condition in 1989, his daughter and grandson packed him in dry ice and shipped him to a U.S. cryonics facility for eventual reanimation. In 1993, they moved Grandpa to Nederland in hopes of starting their own cryonic facility.

Now, 21 years later, he is still sheltered in a Tuff Shed, where dry ice keeps him frozen and preserved.

BoCo Loco bike ride Spring into shape for a great cause!

The Boulder Community Hospital Foundation and the Justin Parker Neurological Institute will host an inaugural fundraising spring bike ride on Sunday, May 15, with open start times from 6:30 to 8 a.m. The BoCo Loco Bike Bash ride will start and finish at the Gerald Stazio Softball Fields off of Valmont Road, near 55th Street, in Boulder. Participants can choose from four courses, ranging from 30 to 100 miles, and the event will end with an expo party from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Stazio Fields. Western Disposal Services Boulder Weekly

will support this zero-waste event. Early registration is open through March 31, and registration is open through May 12.

The ride is limited to 800 riders.

IPWA open house on pine beetles The Indian Peaks Wilderness Alliance is hosting its annual Open House and Winter Lecture, featuring Jeff Mitton of the University of Colorado department of ecology and evolutionary biology and IPWA 2010 scholarship recipient Scott Ferrenberg.

They will explain Colorado’s pine beetle epidemic and share research findings on increased reproduction of the pine beetle. Boulder Arts Commission awards first of new grants The Boulder Arts Commission has awarded the first round of its new Arts and Business Collaborative (ABC) grants. The grants are intended to promote partnerships among arts organizations and businesses or nonprofits to create innovative projects, while also creating significant economic benefit to the community.

The Boulder International Film Festival, Governor’s Office of Creative Industries and Boulder Convention & Visitors’ Bureau received $25,000 for the DiMe (Digital Media) Symposium.

The Colorado Shakespeare Festival, Baker Street Pub and Millennium Harvest House received $7,500 for Shakespeare a la Carte.

The Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art and Downtown Boulder Inc. received $7,500 for the BMoCA Scavenger Hunt, an educational, exhibition-themed scavenger hunt played at the museum and throughout downtown Boulder.

Conference puts food economy on table

ransition Colorado is the reorganized, combined version of nonprofits Transition Boulder and Boulder County Going Local.

Got that?

Well, all you have to know is that the new mission is a modern twist on “Think globally, act locally.” Transition Colorado puts that kind of thinking into action in a number of ways.

The latest will be a weekend conference on growing and sustaining the local economy, Feb. 25-27, at the Millennium Harvest Hotel in Boulder.

The focus here will be on stoking “food localization as economic development,” an expansion of the organization’s ongoing EAT LOCAL! campaign.

“If we can increase local food production as much as possible, it will mean new jobs, new economic activity,” says Michael Brownlee, co-founder of Transition Colorado.

“It’s an area of production that our economists and government are not regarding as economic development.”

And that is odd, because we all need to eat. And no matter what we eat, for most of us it means a lot of people are needed to get it from the field to our tables, even when close to home. When you boost the number of those jobs within the community, it boosts the local economy.

“More than $700 million is spent annually on food in Boulder County,” says Brownlee. “Less than 1 percent of that is spent on what is locally produced.

“Our goal, what we call the 10 percent Local Food Shift Challenge and Pledge, is to be able to devote about 10 percent of our food budget on locally produced food.”

The conference will begin with the showing of a documentary on bringing economic empowerment home, “The Economics of Happiness,” Feb. 25 at 7 p.m., Unity of Boulder, 2855 Folsom St. General admission is $5.

The rest of the weekend’s activities will be given over to special speakers and discussions on putting ideas into action.

The theme on Feb. 26 will be Bringing the Economy Home, with morning keynote speaker Nicole Foss, co-author of the blog “The Automatic Earth.” Foss runs the Agri-Energy Producers’ Association of Ontario, and has an extensive background in energy and finance.

Afternoon keynote speakers will be Michael Shuman of the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies, Woody Tasch, founder of Slow Money, and Brownlee.

The second full day of the conference will focus on bringing community producers and movers of our local foodshed together for practical brainstorming.

The entire conference costs $50 in advance, $60 at the door — but don’t let the cost hold you back.

atomi Matsuzaki, a Japanese-born, self-taught musician who moved to San Francisco from Tokyo in 1996, highlights the avant indie-rock of Deerhoof with her childlike vocals and thunderous bass guitar.

From the simultaneous irreverence, innocence and brilliance of Matsuzaki’s lyrics, you’d think the tiny frontwoman would have a lot to say on stage. However, drummer Greg Saunier hilariously emerges from behind his sparse drumkit after nearly every song Deerhoof performs, towering over Matsuzaki’s microphone to tell straight-faced jokes while she giggles beside him.

There’s no method to the routine beyond expediency, according to Matsuzaki.

“Greg is speaking for me while I am taking a break from singing between songs,” she says. “Why not drummer speaks?

Greg actually doesn’t like to talk on stage but we encourage him. We think his speech is funny!”

Not unlike rock fans unable to warm to Sonic Youth and the Velvet Underground, some consider noise the only meth-

od to Deerhoof ’s magical madness. Based in Oakland, the cult sensation actually debuted as a duo in 1995, with the Oberlin-educated virtuoso Saunier convulsively drumming and since-departed Rob Fisk playing bass. Through wild experimentation, intense practice and heavy touring over 15 years and 10 albums, Deerhoof has evolved into one of the most interesting bands in American popular music.

Offend Maggie (2008), Deerhoof ’s triumphant return to life as a dual-guitar quintet, saw the band’s art-rock beginnings come full circle with Matsuzaki’s adorably creative lyrics — alternated between English and Japanese — tempered by 12-string psychedelia and Saunier’s spastic drums. Unlike the stripped-down and playful bomp of 2006’s Friend Opportunity — which suffered from the loss of second guitarist Chris Cohen — Offend Maggie’s enjoyable depth again proved Deerhoof worthy of the big-time opening slots the band was given by Radiohead

Milk Man, a ballet/performance/concert conceived and performed by children and teachers at the North Haven Community School in the fall of 2006, juxtaposed the Who-meets-Sonic Youth music of Deerhoof ’s acclaimed 2004 album Milk Man with kiddie performance art. Although Matsuzaki’s truly surreal lyrics — such as “Milk Man smiles to you ‘Hi’ in a nude / this banana stuck in my arms, oh my love” — don’t necessarily seem like a fit for elementaryage kids, Deerhoof attended the show and loved it.

“The Milk Man ballet idea came from the teacher,” Matsuzaki says. “She orchestrated other teachers and some students to play the Milk Man album.

She made it sound like the real album.

Their arrangements sounded real similar to [how] we sounded in the album.

Videos of the performance are available online, and the sheer weirdness of the spectacle makes viewing it worthwhile. As

for Deerhoof ’s own shows, eccentricity is always matched with serious musicianship and rampant fun, creating a wholesome, interesting and loud night out. Lately, Deerhoof has transitioned to supporting bands like Radiohead at huge venues to pleasantly packing smaller clubs and theaters such as the Marquis, where the group plays Monday.

“It’s hard sound-wise to play in small places,” Matsuzaki says, “but I like intimacy aspect of small shows. Audiences seem more like friends in that situation.

Last year the group performed with Yoko Ono in Oakland and played Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures album in its entirety onstage in Austria with Xiu Xiu. Like fans of Phish, Deerhoof faithful know something unexpected and special will happen at every one of the band’s gigs.

There’s simply no way to describe what this artful, eccentric Bay Area quartet — which has influenced everyone from Of Montreal to Sufjan Stevens — does without seeing it live. Not unlike Ween, Deerhoof ’s albums are exercises in mad genius, suddenly and strangely switching styles from track to track — but the band’s concerts feature multitudes of head-bopping rock ’n’ roll energy. And one laugh-inducing drummer.

‘The Catch’ gets a hold of one and knocks the cover off

D

o you enjoy plays or musicals (Sure, we all do!) but can never convince your husband, wife, lover, son, daughter, friend, co-worker or mail delivery person to join you for a show? Well, if that husband, wife, lover, son, daughter, friend, co-worker or mail delivery person is a baseball fan, you may finally be in luck because The Catch could be just the ticket for you.

As both a theatre lover and sports fan, I was thrilled when I first learned that the Denver Center Theatre Company was presenting the world premier of a play revolving around baseball.

Though I was unfamiliar with playwright Ken Weitzman’s other works, which include The As If Body Loop and Arrangements, the description of The Catch immediately piqued my interest. A down-on-his-luck businessman decides to turn his life around by catching — then selling — the home run record-breaking ball.

Perhaps it was my sorrow at the advent of yet another Dark Time, the time between the end of one NFL season and the beginning of the next, or maybe it was the euphoria of knowing that pitchers and catchers were reporting to spring training, but it felt a little like opening day when I entered the mini-stadium-like confines of the Space Theatre to see The Catch. Apparently, I was not alone in my anticipation of another MLB season, for I saw not one but two different people sporting actual baseball jerseys in the “stands” that night. In hindsight, I’m a little surprised no one brought his or her mitt.

While it is certainly not the only — or even the first — play ever written about baseball, more than any other such production I have seen, The Catch balances the artistic and the athletic outstandingly. All the characters present as real, flesh and blood human beings rather than theatrical constructs. The protago-

nist, Gary Zipnik (Ian Merrill Peakes), has watched his dot-com business go belly up and his marriage disintegrate. Despite these rather significant setbacks, he maintains an indefatigable optimism, but rather than turning into a one-dimensional Pollyanna, Gary remains conflicted and scared despite being hopeful that everything will work out in the end.

Gary’s father, Sid (Mike Hartman), is a sweettoothed diabetic visiting kooky California from stolid Chicago. A gruff, no-nonsense man, Sid is equally genuine when he berates Gary for his pie-in-the-sky

plan and, later, when he throws all of his support behind the effort. Though afforded less stage time, Gary’s rival for the record-breaking baseball, Michael Nomura (Pun Bandhu), and Michael’s mother, Ruth (Wai-Ching Ho), are also fully realized. With just a few exchanges, the depth and breadth of their relationship is made abundantly clear. The baseball player poised to deliver the epic dinger, Darryl Love (Nicoye Banks), swaggers like a superstar, while providing essential commentary on the ever-evolving nature of America’s pastime.

Credit Weitzman with creating these exceedingly plausible characters and giving them credible things to do and say, but Mr. Weitzman’s world premier benefits immeasurably from the acting talent involved. Denver Center Theatre Company veteran Hartman kills it as Sid Zipnik.

He has the entire audience reeling with laughter time and time again.

Peakes gives us a Gary full of manic energy and driven by an unstated but undeniable fear of failure. Bandhu plays Michael with the reserve required by the part, and as his mother, Ho steals nearly every one of her few scenes. As Love, Banks exudes movie star charisma while tackling a deceivingly complicated role.

Of the major American sports, I would argue that baseball remains the purest. After all, it is the only sport without a clock and that cannot end in a tie. Baseball games take as long as they take, and they are played until one team wins. As pure as baseball is, it is not immune to scandal, as both gambling and steroids have proven in the past. Baseball, like the lucky few who play it professionally and the countless many who follow it avidly each season, is a unique, flawed, brilliant thing, and in that it shares a great deal with The Catch.

Cradle of Filth’s latest concept album explores new territory

ani Filth, frontman of Cradle Of Filth, made himself a promise after writing the latest in a series of concept albums with the group’s 2008 CD, Godspeed on the Devil’s Thunder.

“I did swear blind on the last record that that would be the last concept record for some while,” Filth says.

But that promise didn’t last even one album. The new Cradle Of Filth CD, Darkly, Darkly Venus Aversa, is once again a concept album, with a story based around Lilith, the first wife of Adam (before Eve), who according to mythology embraced a demonesque life filled with lust and sin.

Filth says he wasn’t planning to write another concept album, but that changed when he started writing the lyrics.

“I was struggling with the whole idea about what to do the whole album about,” Filth says. “And then one night I sat down with the nucleus of the album, the sort of starting block of about three or four songs, and played them back to back. I drank some wine and really got into the whole feel of it. Maybe it was the autumn air, I don’t know, but there was something about it that was quite magical.

“It just suggested this idea of Lilith,” he says. “Lilith has been a character that has sort of stood in the shadows behind the band for some while. I mean, we’ve always been interested in the powerful female archetype.

And Lilith is probably the ultimate. … Because of that, I thought we could place her in history.”

As much as Filth realized he was once again traveling down the concept album road, he did not entirely forsake one of the key reasons he initially wanted to make the next Cradle of Filth CD be a collection of songs.

He felt that on other theme albums, individual

songs often didn’t get appreciated outside of the context of the full CD. With Darkly, Darkly Venus Aversa, he feels each song stands on its own merits.

“If people want to just download it and listen to it in completely the wrong order or mixed up, they can enjoy each song for what it actually is, a heavy metal song,” Filth says. “[Then] there’s another side of the coin where people can immerse themselves further.

The story runs concurrently from A to B, and it’s very cinematic.”

Musically, Darkly, Darkly Venus Aversa retains the signature elements that Cradle Of Filth has developed over the course of nine CDs since the band from Suffolk, England, came on the scene with the 1994 album The Principle of Evil Made Flesh.

As usual, the CD fuses gnarly extreme metal and symphonic elements. Filth screams (and occasionally sings) his way through a thick wall of guitars, piledriving drums and bits of orchestration that give the songs melodic dimension and some gothic overtones.

But Filth feels the new CD stands out within the catalog because of a collection of subtle refinements that the band achieved in the making of the CD. “There are a lot of little things that all add up to a bigger picture, whether it’s different vocal techniques

— and there a lot of them on the album — different passages, more fluent keyboards, more symphonic, more rhythmic, more guitar solos,” he says.

The new CD also marks the start of a new era on a business level, as Cradle Of Filth has left Roadrunner Records for the English label Peaceville Records, with a distribution deal for United States through Nuclear Blast Records. Filth felt Roadrunner wasn’t the right fit for the group anymore.

“I’m not going to speak shit about Roadrunner at all. We enjoyed our alliance together,” Filth says. “But toward the back end of our time there, and especially around the Godspeed album, I personally think that [CD] wasn’t handled very well. … They wanted something commercial. I mean, Cradle Of Filth, some people call us very commercial, but we’re not a resident in the top of the charts in America, the ‘Billboard’ charts, and probably never will be because we’re too extreme.

“Now at Peaceville, we feel like a bigger fish in a smaller, more creative pond,” he says. “They’ve got a lot of really good ideas because they want to push the band because they know it’s going to work, which is good.”

The band has started the touring cycle for Darkly, Darkly Venus Aversa, and is now bringing its tour to the United States. Fans can expect a visually stimulating show that covers the group’s entire career.

“We’ve actually crafted several set lists in order to satisfy everybody,” Filth says. “In some states, you know, particularly around Orange County [California] and Las Vegas, it’s not uncommon to see the same person at two shows, and especially in Europe. So the whole purpose of having multiple set lists is so we don’t play the same thing from night to night too close together.”

New program, old favorites Hilary Hahn waltzes into Macky

H

ilary Hahn wanted to be a river guide.

“Oh, yeah. I’ve had many alternate careers in my mind,” says the Grammy-winning violinist. But even though she will be in Colorado next week, don’t look for her on Clear Creek or the Arkansas River — not now nor next summer.

“I love white-water rafting,” Hahn says. “I seriously thought that would be a fun thing to do, but then I realized ... ‘Mmm. I’m not sure if I could deal with a dislocated shoulder.’ ... I guess if I weren’t playing, I would enjoy it very much.”

So instead of leading a river trip, you will find Hahn playing a recital with pianist Valentina Lisitsa at 7:30 p.m. next Monday in Boulder’s Macky Auditorium. It may not be whitewater rafting, but the program is plenty adventurous in its own way.

“I try not to have a formula when I do a recital program,” Hahn says. “I come up with a few things that we want to do and try to find a way to put them together musically with other things that are interesting as well.”

Since Hahn has very wide-ranging tastes, “interesting” usually turns out to be an understatement. Her current touring program includes such staples of the violinist’s repertoire as Tartini’s Variations on a Theme of Corelli, J.S. Bach’s B minor Partita for solo violin and Beethoven’s Spring Sonata in F major, op. 24.

But with these evergreens she will play two littleknown American works from the early 20th century: the Sonata No. 4 by the Americana iconoclast Charles Ives, subtitled Children’s Day at the Camp Meeting; and even further outside the experience of most concertgoers, the Sonata No. 1 of George Antheil, who famously titled his autobiography The Bad Boy of

Ives’ music has attained enough respectability to be played from time to time, but few if any in Hahn’s audience will ever have heard a single note by Antheil performed live.

But Hahn, who plays just about everything she can get her hands on, had already encountered Antheil’s four sonatas when she was a teenager.

“I had thought about programming an Antheil sonata a long time ago,” she says. “I revisited the idea because I read Antheil’s autobiography. ... I was curious to listen to the sonatas again and see what I thought of them, and the one that I wanted to hear was this one.

“It’s a fantastic sonata. The piece is like rock ’n’ roll minimalism, and yet neither one of those had really taken off at that time. It’s very, very contagious music.”

What is Hahn’s advice for listeners encountering Antheil’s music for the first time?

“I think you just listen,” she says. “With any piece,

you’re going to have a very different experience from anyone who would describe it to you. So you listen and see what strikes you, and there’s no wrong impression.”

While the Antheil will be new to the audience, the Beethoven Spring Sonata, familiar as it is, will be new to Hahn’s repertoire.

“The Spring Sonata is something I used to read when I was in school. ... I didn’t wind up performing it for whatever reason, so I just learned that one last year. So ... it’s also brand new to me.”

Sometimes, Hahn says, “It’s harder to learn something that you know by ear at least, because you have to undo everything you think you know and actually learn stuff from the ground up. It’s easy to coast through thinking that you’re doing what you hear in your ear, but that’s not coming across. You have to really listen to what you’re doing.”

On the other hand, Hahn is quick to note that pieces that are completely new to a performer — like the Antheil — offer a different kind of challenge. “I find it very challenging to work with something brand new, because you’re starting from scratch, but it’s a very, very, very, big realm of possibilities. … If you’ve never heard it you can go in any direction, and anything is fine. Where do you start?

“It’s like that blank page and writers’ block. It’s never easy.”

Clearly, Hahn relishes both challenges. As she is doing on the current tour, she consistently programs pieces that are part of the established repertoire — think Bach and Beethoven in this case — and pieces that have to be considered unknowns for her audience — Antheil and likely Ives. In either case, her advice is probably best: just listen.

t’s a cold, misty morning in western Colorado. The hypnotic silence, embellished by waves of rolling icefog, is broken by the grinding growl of the customized dog transport vehicle emerging through the haze. My dog sledding day is beginning at the privately owned Lazy J Ranch in Wolcott as a guest of Mountain Musher Dog Sled Rides, a family-owned operation that has run tours since 1989.

As the stars of the show are unloaded from the truck by the mushers, I am greeted with curious woofs and eager eyes. Most of Mountain Musher’s 86 dogs are medium-sized, athletic husky hybrids, and sled teams are chosen by the work ethic and chemistry of the individual canines. Whimpers of excitement erupt into a chorus of enthusiastic howls as the teams are fit into their harnesses and

prepped for the trail. As the passengers are loaded into the sleds, the dogs are nearly delirious with anticipation. Even the old, seasoned vets on the sled team wag their tails as the moment draws near. The younger pups are trembling with energy.

Driving my team today is Sarah, daughter of Mountain Musher owner and founder Wally Glass. In her mid-20s, friendly and mountainpretty, when Sarah switches to “musher-mode” her voice resonates with confidence and authority. Our lead dogs Sassy and Shyka hang on her every command and for a moment the entire team is still.

“Go Sassy! Go Shyka! Woof, woof, woof!”

With an unexpected and powerful jolt, the team springs to action. Having secretly doubted the power of these seemingly undersized dogs, the speed and acceleration is quite a thrill. Snug and

bundled in the sled, I get a dog’s eye view of the powdered aspen trees as we cruise through alpine corridors. The team displays its true power as we hit an incline, where the dogs dig in and continue to muscle the sled under Sarah’s masterful commands. She eases the team into a more moderate pace as we top out into an exposed meadow.

As we glide into the foothills, I learn more about Mountain Musher’s history from Sarah.

Her father is an affable mountain man with a thick red beard and a twinkle in his eye, resembling a not-yet-of-age Santa Claus. After trying out dog sledding as a young man, he was hooked, and it wasn’t long before Wally placed mushing at the center of his universe. The Bard via gnomes

wo households, both alike in dignity / In fair Verona, where we lay our scene / From ancient grudge break to new mutiny.”

And at about this point the gnome reciting the prologue to Romeo and Juliet is yanked off stage by a big Bugs Bunny hook. For this is no epic tale of woe, this romance of Juliet and her Gnomeo.

Even if “the story you are about to see has been told before. A lot,” you’ve never seen it told like this.

Gnomeo & Juliet is a daft, and generally deft, British animated re-telling of the star-crossed romance set in adjacent English backyard gardens and set to the music of Elton John (he and his Rocket Films produced it). And if it’s not an unerringly faithful adaptation of Shakespeare’s play, it still manages enough wit and charm to come off.

Lady Blueberry (the voice of Maggie Smith) keeps her blue gnomes on her side of the garden fence. But Gnomeo ( James McAvoy) would rather be racing lawnmowers and chasing girls. Girl gnomes.

The blue gnomes have long hated the red gnomes.

Lord Redbrick (the voice of Michael Caine) has his daughter, Juliet (Emily Blunt) up on a pedestal — literally — and sputters malapropisms any time she fancies coming down to hang with the lads.

“What is the meaning of all this constipation?”

The hotheaded Tybalt ( Jason Statham, perfect) is the one who stirs things up the most. He cheats in the

lawnmower races and treats everything as a blood sport.

Except there is no blood. When gnomes die, they’re shattered. Also, literally.

Then Gnomeo spies fair Juliet, and you adults know the rest. Gnomeo is smitten, and Juliet? “Because I’m Red, I’m feelin’ blue.”

Other voices include Ozzie Osborne, Julie Walters and Hulk Hogan. In this version of the romance, a goofy lovesick plastic flamingo ( Jim Cummings) is the friar, that one person sympathetic to star-crossed lovers.

The funny sidekicks aren’t funny enough, save for the porcelain frog, Nannette (Ashley Jensen), who fills the role of Juliet’s nurse.

“A Red and a Blue, it just can’t be. It’s DOOMED. That’s the best kind of romance!”

There is no Mercutio. But there is a Benvolio.

Gnomeo’s cousin is named “Bennie,” as in “Bennie and the Jets.”

That works because every so often — quite often — Elton John’s music, either the original “Saturday Night’s All Right for Fighting” or an orchestration of it, slips in. If you can’t see how neatly “Your Song” fits into this story, you’re not remembering, “How wonderful life is, while you’re in the world.” The best scene in the movie summarizes, in a few quick strokes, a divorce (human, not gnome) set to Elton singing, “Love built this garden.”

Kids will get a kick out of the gnome-fu fighting and lawnmower racing and such. And adults will grin at the bulldog, chased out of the yard with “Out! OUT, damned Spot!” Patrick Stewart voices a certain famous playwright as a statue in a nearby park; a moving company is named Rosencrantz and Guildenstern.

Director and co-writer Kelly Asbury (“Shrek 2”) finds a few jokes and a few moments of heart, just enough to lift Gnomeo above most recent animated B-movies. But it’s a pity he didn’t err on the side of Shakespeare and not of Shrek. The pathos and wit of the Bard bests the sight gags and one-liners of the Big Green Ogre every time.

A film of great scowling

A

ctors learn only by doing, and by getting in over their heads. In the heyday of the Hollywood studio era, often they’d do this while wearing extremely heavy battle garb, surrounded by extras yelling “Aarrrrrghhhh!” as they run toward the enemy.

The Eagle recalls that heyday in fairly entertaining fashion, and a welcome paucity of computer-generated hordes. Set in 2nd century Roman Britain, a time and place of great scowling, the film stars ex-stripper and former model Channing Tatum as the warrior son of a warrior, a young man determined to venture north of Hadrian’s Wall with his Briton slave, where no Roman can survive without special screenplay dispensation.

Object of the road trip: to retrieve the shining gold symbol of the far-reaching Roman Empire, the eagle statue, last carried into battle by Rome’s Ninth Legion.

What became of the Ninth’s vanished 5,000 soldiers?

Can the Roman warrior Marcus, portrayed by Tatum, trust his minion, Esca, played by Jamie Bell? Or will the slave slit the master’s throat first chance he gets, as Marcus’ wise old owl of an uncle (Donald Sutherland) predicts with such certainty?

Good questions. Director Kevin Macdonald’s middleweight epic provides answers that, as performance Boulder Weekly

evaluations phrase it, meet expectations. Macdonald made the documentary Touching the Void and the dramatic features The Last King of Scotland and State of Play, and he likes to keep his hand-held camera nice and close to the action. Cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle shoots on film here, as opposed to using the super-bright digital palettes he brought to 127 Hours and Slumdog Millionaire, the latter having won Mantle the Oscar. Different world, different story with The Eagle, which screenwriter Jeremy Brock adapted from Rosemary Sutcliff ’s 1954 young-adult novel The

Eagle of the Ninth. The idea is to immerse audiences in the grime and chaos of Marcus’ quest.

The movie owes clear debts to Gladiator, though the producers also cite the Stanley Kramer drama The Defiant Ones as an inspiration. The Eagle becomes more interesting the further north it travels, and there’s an effective narrative switcheroo when Marcus and Esca trade roles to deceive the (fictionalized) native peoples of the Very, Very Far North, the “Seal People,” formidable warriors and trackers indeed.

In this latter section of the story, Tatum’s performance momentarily acquires a spark. But too often in The Eagle, in which the Romans are played by American actors and the Britons are played by Brits, Tatum comes off like “second Roman warrior from the left” rather than “Roman warrior the film is about.”

Star quality is an elusive commodity. I’m not sure Tatum has it. On the other hand, he’s one of the bright spots in the Vince Vaughn vehicle The Dilemma. So there’s hope.

In 1955, Henri-Georges Clouzot joined forces with his friend Picasso to make an entirely new kind of art film, “a film that could capture the moment and

Clouzot thus captured a perfect reverse image of Picasso’s brushstrokes. Picasso creates, and sometimes obliterates, 20 works, ranging from playful sketches to murals. End of an era

Juanita’s closing is part of Boulder’s evolving culinary identity

or 28 years, Juanita’s Mexican restaurant in downtown Boulder has witnessed a transforming city. It has survived the times, becoming a unique landmark along the Pearl Street Mall with its funky façade and laid-back atmosphere.

As news has spread of the restaurant’s upcoming closure on Feb. 27, people are shifting their attention to the new Mexican restaurant that will take its place, as well as to a changing trend in the dining habits of Boulder community members.

Roger Berardi and his partner Michael Kretz opened Juanita’s on June 13, 1983, with the goal of bringing in Mexican food and culture at a time when both were relatively unfamiliar in the area.

According to current general manager Ed Bigg, the restaurant was busy from the get-go. Boulderites latched on to the casual style of the little Mexican joint, sipping margaritas in the Red Room lounge and digging into a wide selection of TexMex specialties.

The decision to close, Bigg says, comes at a time of culinary revolution. He says that people in Boulder are becoming more sophisticated in their tastes and more selective in their dining preferences. The new restaurant will seek to appeal to a wider dining demographic.

“What we’re hoping to create in this space is a brand new concept that still has its foundation in Mexican culture and cuisine, while elevating it to be more in-tune with the times,” Bigg says.

He says that the plan for the new restaurant isn’t fully developed at the moment, but it will hopefully be an establishment that “makes a statement,” with a menu that goes everywhere from street food to highend entrée dishes.

The style of the new place will incorporate a pre-

1900s building façade reminiscent of the historic image of downtown Boulder. This will allow for increased interior lighting, Bigg says, and a more inviting dining environment.

The present staff at Juanita’s was notified two months prior about its closing date. Because it isn’t yet determined when exactly the new restaurant will get under way, the establishment will most likely have an all-new staff.

Under ideal conditions, Bigg says, the new eatery will open sometime this summer.

Some people, Bigg says, have expressed concern about the changing trends in the dining scene in Boulder, with more upscale restaurants and fewer community eateries and quirky Pearl Street hangouts like Juanita’s.

“There’s no doubt that progress is a good thing,” Bigg says. “The way the Boulder dining scene is changing is really great for everybody.”

Mexico

Boulder resident Steve Spencer says that he doesn’t think Juanita’s is closing — it’s simply changing.

“Changing is survival,” Spencer says.

“I’m hoping that by changing and re-branding they’ll bring some exciting energy to the Mexican restaurant business.”

Some community members are concerned that revamping restaurants like Juanita’s in downtown Boulder will limit the access of those who tend to be shorter on cash, such as university students.

But Bigg says the restaurant that takes the place of Juanita’s will still attempt to present an economically viable menu.

“Hopefully there will be something there for the clientele who have been faithful for many years, as well as things that will appeal to people who are more serious about their dining experience,” he says.

Bigg has been approached by old employees and long-time customers who have expressed both their support and their disappointment that Juanita’s is shutting its doors.

“There are a lot of memories here for a lot of people,” he says.

Bigg first started working with Juanita’s at its Denver location in 1986, which has since closed. He has worked at the Boulder location since 2000.

Throughout his time on Pearl Street, Bigg has often hired new employees who have lived in Boulder their entire lives and have been coming to Juanita’s since they were children.

The nostalgia of having spent so many years at Juanita’s and finally seeing it end hasn’t really hit him yet, Bigg says. Right now, everyone is just busy trying to keep things going until the end of the month.

“You can’t stay the same forever,” he says. “There is a time when you have to embrace change.”

hope you had a fan-freakin’tastic Valentine’s Day. I know how much my single friends count down the days for the 14th to arrive.

Really, they do. All because I transform myself into a little cupid, making it my mission to “shoot” everyone around me with the arrow of love.

Maybe you saw me prancing around in my little diaper, with wings and carrying a bow and arrow. Thank goodness I stick to Pearl Street, so I blend right in.

What I actually give away is fantastic treats that make them feel like they are one in a million, sweetheart of all sweethearts. This year it was Chocolate Strawberry and Champagne Cupcakes. Who needs someone sending you a Valentine when you can have a sinfully delicious aphrodisiac treat warming the cockles of your heart? See, Valentine’s Day is over now, but these treats mean so much more when you are making them just because. Aren’t you lucky you have me and Hallmark to tell you these things?

These cupcakes, besides being tasty, are really pretty and fun to make.

I add a bit of champagne to the batter, which makes them light and fluffy, and I add a bit to the chocolate frosting. Of course, this goes without saying, but the rest of the champagne I just enjoy right out of the bottle — I mean, I use a glass, for cupid’s sake.

Dipping strawberries in chocolate and popping them on the top of the cupcake makes a nice presentation, and anyone can do it. Try dipping in some white chocolate to really kick up the esthetic factor.

So, I’m hoping you are having a wonderful February, baking lots of things that make you feel warm and cozy inside and out, and if you see a crazy cupid roaming the streets, please don’t call the police, it’s just me.

Now, follow the directions, put some love into it and invite me over when it’s done.

Chocolate Strawberry and Champagne Cupcakes 1/2 cup warm water 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1/2 cup champagne 1 tsp. instant espresso (you can use coffee) 1 1/4 cups flour 1/4 tsp. salt 1 3/4 tsp. baking powder 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened) 1 cup granulated sugar 2 eggs 1 tsp. vanilla chocolate frosting (recipe below) 16 ounces strawberries powdered sugar for dusting Preheat oven to 375. Line 16 muffin cups with paper liners ( I used gold ones, looked cute with chocolate and strawberries) In small bowl, add cocoa powder to 1/2 cup warm water, whisk until smooth. Stir in champagne and espresso. Set aside.

In another small bowl, combine flour, salt and baking powder.

In large bowl with electric mixer, or by hand, cream butter and sugar.

Add in eggs one at a time. Stir in vanilla. Mix flour into butter mixture and stir until incorporated. Add cocoa/ champagne mix and stir until smooth.

Fill each muffin cup 2/3 to 3/4 full with batter. Bake for 15-20 minutes (in my oven, 16 minutes is perfect) until toothpick comes out clean and cupcake springs back when lightly touched. take out of oven and transfer to wire rack. When cooled, frost and place a strawberry on top, dust with powdered sugar. Enjoy!

Frosting 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened) 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 2 tbls. champagne 2-3 tbsp. milk (add slowly, might need a bit more or a bit less) 1/2 tsp. vanilla Mix together butter and powdered sugar. Sift cocoa powder into mix. Stir in champagne, milk and vanilla. Beat until smooth and creamy.

Note: You can omit the champagne in the batter and the frosting. Use one cup water for cupcakes, and use all milk for frosting.

TIDBITES Food happenings around town Smooch-able You can kiss Cefiore Yogurt goodbye.

Not to worry, frozen yogurt fans, the store on 1926 14th St. is simply leaving the Cefiore franchise and rebranding as Smooch Frozen Yogurt and Mochi.

Owners Michelle and Christopher Luu decided to leave the franchise after two years, after they began formulating new products and flavors outside of the franchise agreement.

The majority of the store, minus new signs and minor enhancements, will remain the same, but by going independent, Smooch hopes to be able to incorporate more local dairies and farms.

Cefiore closed Feb. 11 and reopened as Smooch on Feb. 14.

Not so local after all Boulder County has long been known for its focus on sustainability, but studies indicate that of the nearly $700 million Boulder County residents spend each year on food, less than 1 percent of that goes for food grown within the county.

Transition Colorado commissioned economist and author Michael Shuman to develop a comprehensive assessment of the economic prospects for localizing the Boulder food system, and to make specific recommendations to turn that 1 percent into 25 percent in coming years.

The study should be completed by late 2011, with a final report and public forum on the findings. The major goal is to create a significant economic development strategy for the region based on the production, processing and distribution of locally grown food.

Shuman has experience as director of research and economic development for the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies, authored The Small-Mart Revolution, and recently completed a similar study in the 16-county Northeast Ohio region. In that study, he found that 25 percent food relocalization would create 27,000 new jobs and propel $4.2 billion in additional output.

Shuman will be a keynote speaker at the Our Local Economy in

Grab a fork at new Lyons restaurant Lyons Fork Restaurant is holding its grand opening from Feb. 17 to Feb. 26.

Located at 450 Main St. in Lyons, Lyons Fork is “a food-centric, beerdriven, margarita-adoring little haunt,” according to its website, www.lyonsfork.com.

With dinner served from 5 to 9 p.m., brunch on the weekends from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and a daily happy hour from 4 to 6 p.m. on weekdays and 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Lyons Fork offers plenty of opportunities to get a taste of the new restaurant.

They’ll also be holding events to celebrate their opening. There will be a “beer vs. wine” dinner on Thursday, Feb. 17, at 6:30 p.m., and a cheese and beer pairing on Sunday, Feb. 20, from 2 to 5 p.m. Also on Feb. 20, the restaurant will hold the first of its Sunday Evening Music Series, featuring Joe Kukla and happy hour drink prices. On Feb. 26, to celebrate the end of their grand opening week, they’ll host an after-party with music by Lyons’ own Terry Kishiyama.
