Wrong. Monsanto’s biotampering fooled Mother Nature briefly, but Mom has fought back. Several weeds have mutated to become immune to Roundup. For farmers, coping with these new superweeds has already become a billion-dollar-a-year nightmare, and they’re spreading like, well, like superweeds.

As reported by Tom Philpott of MotherJones.com, a 31-state survey of farmers found that half of them now have Roundup-immune weeds in their fields. Some states are especially hard hit — infested acreage doubled in Iowa,

Monsanto vs. Mother Nature: Guess who’s winning?

f you fool with Mother Nature, she’ll most likely fool with you — usually in very unpleasant ways.

Monsanto, the biotech profiteer, keeps rediscovering this reality, but never seems to learn from it. For more than a decade, it has aggressively pushed its genetically altered corn and soybean seeds on American farmers. Called “Roundup Ready,” the seeds have had their genes altered specifically so the resulting corn plants and soybeans can tolerate heavier doses of an herbicide called “Roundup.”

Court rulings. It is this: Individuals being allowed to bear arms can result in both incidents of self-defense and self-preservation (which is undoubtedly the intent of the Second Amendment) against an equally (or more powerfully) armed aggressor, as well as unfortunate incidents of the slaying of innocent lives that pose no aggression. Indiana and Nebraska last year, and 92 percent of Georgia farmers say they now have the weeds. But Monsanto, having learned nothing, is peddling yet another bio-scheme to fool Mother Nature.

Called “next generation,” these are realtered seeds that let farmers dump super-toxic pesticides on the superweeds.

Great — let’s spread more-poisonous and more-costly poisons on our food, then Mother Nature will evolve and proliferate even more-super superweeds. As organic and sustainable farmers are showing, it’s far better to cooperate with Mother Nature than foolishly trying to sledgehammer her.

commentary The secret history of Boulder’s socialist book store

A

merican young people (or those aged 18 to 29) have a more positive attitude toward socialism than to capitalism, according to a recent Pew poll. We are in the middle of “an era of tumult and protest” against global capitalism in the U.S. and abroad, argues sociologist Frances Fox Piven in The Nation.

While the “Occupy” movement has faded, a new study says many participants “have carried their political vision and activism into a variety of new venues” and most likely will continue to do so for many years to come. This is quite encouraging for lefties.

That’s why it is so painful that Boulder’s “explicitly socialist” Left Hand Books is closing on April 15. I was involved in the group that created it, and its roots run all the way back to activism in the 1970s.

It is an all-volunteer collective. All of us in the core group are retired and getting burned out. The store nearly fell apart in 2009 when Gene Rodriguez (who has put more time and energy into the store than anyone in recent years) and his wife Eva Mesmer had serious health problems.

Louise Knapp joined the store’s core group in 2009. She has been invaluable because of her business background. For 14 years, she was the owner/manager of The Word Is Out, which sold feminist, gay and gender-related literature. She also has a long history as a left-wing troublemaker. In 1975, she was the leader of a strike at a Head Ski factory in Boulder (making tennis rackets, racket balls and skis). From 1975 to 1990, she was a member of a study/action group called the Boulder Socialist Feminist Collective, which engaged in “guerrilla theater and art.” Sometimes, she says with a mysterious laugh, the actions were “extra-legal.”

For nearly 34 years, Left Hand has been, in the words of our Facebook page, “Boulder’s one-stop shop for all socialist, resistance, revolutionary, radical, alternative and anti-capitalist literature.” The guy who wrote that line is an anarchist and included the word “socialist” after I complained. Actually, we sometimes just say we feature “progressive” literature in an effort to reach out to more mainstream folks.

(southeast corner of the Pearl Street Mall at Broadway, down the stairs), the store started in 1979 as a project of the Boulder chapter of the New American Movement (NAM), a democratic socialist group founded by activists of the 1960s student New Left. Beginning in 1971, Boulder NAM members were active in the peace, environmental and feminist movements. The group raised a lot of money for the American Indian Movement during the Wounded Knee occupation in South Dakota. There was a Marxist study group and two local free newspapers.

But Boulder NAM was unique among the city’s radicals in emphasizing economic justice issues. Among other things, we were strong union supporters.

In 1977, Coors brewery workers in Golden went on strike over many greviances. For example, employees were subjected to polygraph tests before being hired and while employed. They were asked “Are you a homosexual?” and “Are you a Communist?” and “Have you ever smoked marijuana?” The national labor movement asked people to boycott Coors. Boulder NAM decided to join the Coors Boycott and Strike Support Coalition. We picketed Liquor Mart and sponsored talks by strikers on the CU campus.

We showed a documentary on women union activists in the 1930s called “Union Maids” (made by a couple who were NAM members) at the brewery workers’ hall in Golden. Stella Nowicki (one of the women in the film) gave an explicitly feminist and socialist talk afterwards. She got a standing ovation. Jim Zarichny, our oldest member, raised the question of Boulder NAM creating a permanent institution. He was highly respected because he had been an activist since he was a kid in the labor, civil rights, student (early member of SDS) and socialist movements.

So, after a lot of discussion and planning, we formed the Left Hand Book and Record Collective.

It’s sad to see it go.

Which, of course, is the essence of a democratic society — a mixed, imperfect combination of good and bad.

Exercising the right to have an abortion always involves the killing of a defenseless person who never has any say in the matter. The reasons that one might have an abortion are either personal reasons having to do with one’s desires for one’s own life or because one thinks that the difficulty of the unborn child’s experience in life will be worse than its “experience” of being terminated before being born (however one might conceive of that). Whatever these reasons are, the carrying out of an abortion always, without exception, involves the killing of a defenseless person by another person who has total control over the defenseless person’s existence.

As such, protecting the “right” to have an abortion is the protection of a fundamentally undemocratic ideal, an ideal which is, in fact, the seed for the formation of totalitarian societies.

Don’t mix up your flags

You have an article in this week’s edition titled “Outcry prompts Longmont school to remove pro-gun link from website,” by Jefferson Dodge (News, Feb. 7). I cry foul. I am a liberal Democrat, and your portrayal of a revolutionary war flag over a Confederate flag without making the distinction is appalling. The two are quite different and do not involve each other. The

“Don’t tread on me” and snake are from the Revolutionary War. The red and blue with white stars diagonal flag is from the Confederacy. You report that the flag you have printed on page 14 of this week’s edition was carried by “colonial Marines”? Really?

In the 1,000th issue of Boulder Weekly ( Jan. 31) there was a summary of the series, “Ready to Blow,” about the Bowie County Jail. Unfortunately I didn’t read it when it was first published.

I was thinking that all religions believe in the Golden Rule, but Jesus took the rule to the next level when he said, “What you do to the least among you, you do to me.” The prisoners under your care were among the least among us, and you did great harm to them. Before you die, I urge you to do all you can to undo the damage you did. I’m not Jesus, but whatever you chose to do, you do to me.

THE CONSERVATIVE IS COMING! Oh, how we cherish moments like this, when CU-Boulder announces that it is bringing in three finalists for its chair in right-wing politics, er, Scholar in Conservative Thought and Policy. Sorry.

It simply reminds us of a story we had almost forgotten, of how a former Republican CU president and chancellor decided in 2008 that our decidedly liberal campus needed a dose of Rush Limbaugh.

We can’t wait to see who is chosen from among the esteemed candidates. (Look them up if you are really interested. Alas, no Bill O’Reillys in the group, it seems.)

What we want to know is, how can CU sustain, protect and nurture such a creature as a conservative?

Will this species, Conservatarius Unum, get its own terrarium, a glass box in the middle of campus that allows the rest of us to observe it in its own environment, surrounded by flat-screen TVs set to Fox News? Maybe an exercise wheel with a picture of Obama above it to chase and nip after, fruitlessly?

It would have to be a very secure enclosure, of course. What if the conservative escapes, mates with some of our local liberals, and multiplies, resulting in scores of moderates pillaging our lands?

And will there be enough fried food in Boulder to sustain such a creature? Alas, we can only ponder the ramifications of bringing such a beast into our whereabouts.

We are reminded of what George F. Will said after our own arts and entertainment editor, David Accomazzo, broke the story when he was with the Times-Call.

Will told the Wall Street Journal: “Like Margaret Mead among the Samoans, they’re planning to study conservatives. That’s hilarious.”

Yes, George, hilarious. Until one gets out and starts ruining our gene pool.

WE WANT ERIE’S NEXT CHECK Dear Erie Board of Trustees, We’d like to apply for the privilege of performing your next environmental assessment of the local effects of fracking and other oil and gas operations.

We’ve noticed that those other pesky independent studies that weren’t paid for by the town keep finding dangerous levels of air and water pollution. What the hell does the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration know about ozone gas, anyway? So for only $50,000, we will assure you that we will go even further than the other town-paid consultants have gone, delivering test results that not only show no emissions of any kind in the air around Erie, but reveal that the town should be renamed Eden and should start bottling its air and selling it.

PASS THE JAR Speaking of hot air, Colorado Gov. John Frackenlooper — oops, there we go again, Hickenlooper — has actually admitted to drinking fracking fluid.

Yes, according to The Washington Times, Halliburton — a real bastion of credibility — has convinced the governor that the fluid is made entirely of “ingredients sourced from the food industry.”

Yeah, if you consider benzene a fruit.

Or if your four food groups are hydrochloric acid, methanol, sodium chloride and isopropyl alcohol.

Apparently, our state’s top elected official told the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, “You can drink it. We did drink it around the table, almost rituallike, in a funny way.”

Well, we, for one, think it’s interesting that our state’s top elected official thinks it’s so funny.

Too bad so many who voted for him think it’s not funny that he’s stabbed us in the back, getting in bed with the oil and gas industry and ignoring the health and safety concerns that his constituents have raised. Apparently it’s a big joke that the profits of corporations seem to take precedence over ascertaining whether air and water quality are being permanently compromised for subsequent generations.

Finally, Hick acknowledged his real motivation, saying: “If we were overzealous in forcing them to disclose what they had created, they wouldn’t bring it into our state.”

Ah, so now the truth comes out. And the real sick joke that is being played on the rest of us.

Boulder officials increasingly resistant to coughing up open records

T

he city of Boulder seems to have joined a growing number of government agencies in Colorado that have started charging more for — and taking more time to produce — public documents when faced with open records requests.

Attorneys and activists alike are crying foul, suggesting that the disturbing new trend is not only legally questionable, but appears to be an attempt to discourage media outlets and citizens alike from peering too deeply into taxpayer-funded activities.

In the case of the city of Boulder, Boulder Weekly has documented numerous cases in which open records requests — filed both by the newspaper and local citizens — have either been denied or met with demands for hundreds of dollars and wait times exceeding what is allowed by state law. **** The text of the Colorado Open Records Act reads: “The date and hour set for the inspection of records not readily available at the time of the request shall be within a reasonable time after the request. … A ‘reasonable time’ shall be presumed to be three working days or less. Such period may be extended if extenuating circumstances exist.

However, such period of extension shall not exceed seven working days.”

In other words, public entities have a window of three days to allow requesters to see records. But Boulder’s approach does not appear to fit within the law. Of the roughly 20 open records requests reviewed

by BW, only one received a response that fell within the law’s “reasonable time”: a case where an official told a citizen the requested records didn’t exist. Other than that instance, Boulder has always given itself an extension.

Boulder Communications Manager Sarah Huntley told BW that CORA gives custodians “between three and seven working days (depending on a variety of factors) to respond to a records request. That response acknowledges receipt of the request, but does not have to include production of the records themselves.”

But the law says the records, not just a response, should be produced within three days. CORA says inspection of records should take place within “three working days or less” unless the materials are “in active use, in storage or otherwise not readily available” at the time.

“All you need to do is read the statute,” says Denver attorney Steve Zansberg, an expert on media law who works for Levine Sullivan Koch & Schulz and represents members of the Colorado Press Association. “Records custodians are always saying that they have three days to respond to a records request by telling you whether they’re going to produce the records or not, and that’s not true. Nobody goes to court and challenges what is called the three10 February 14, 2013

day rule, but if you read the statute, it very clearly says records are to be provided ‘forthwith,’ meaning immediately, upon receipt.

“They don’t get to say, ‘Come back in three days and we’ll give you this record that is behind me on this shelf here,’” Zansberg adds. “It has been the erroneous assumption among records custodians for quite some time that they have three days to provide access to any record, even if it’s readily available. We have tried, through our press entities, to educate records custodians that that’s not what the statute says.”

Boulder’s practice, instead, seems to be to respond to a request on the third day and tell the requester it’ll be about another week before the city produces the records.

And the city’s written response appears to be phrased the same way every time. BW compared CORA responses sent by multiple city employees and received by multiple requesters, and it’s clear city staff have a form letter they use to respond to CORA requests. City employees’ responses seem to be virtually identical, with only dates and estimated costs changed.

This form letter uses paragraphs taken directly from the law to justify delaying providing information.

In the letter, city employees claim every CORA request is “a broadly stated one that encompasses all or substantially all of a large category of records, without sufficient specificity to allow me, as custodian, reasonably to prepare or gather the records within three business days.”

That text is copied from a provision in CORA allowing an extension beyond three days, which the law calls “extenuating circumstances,” but which

South West Water Conservancy District that public entities can charge for research, particularly if the request is “voluminous,” a term never defined in the ruling. The case established that “nominal” fees can be charged to search “voluminous” records.

In other words, explains Zansberg, a government agency (other than law enforcement agencies, which can charge its complete expenses incurred while producing criminal records) can only charge for staff time spent on search and retrieval if it is a voluminous request, but even then the amount charged should be a small percentage of the actual cost, or “trifling, especially as compared to what would be expected,” as it is defined in Black.

“It is increasingly the case that governmental entities are increasing the practice of trying to pass on the costs of retrieval and copying to records requesters, despite the fact that the statute does not provide for anything other than nominal search and retrieval fees,” Zansberg says. “They should not be passing through the actual cost of search and retrieval. That is not allowed under the law.”

Geoff Wilson, general counsel for the Colorado Municipal League, declined to comment specifically on Boulder’s practices, since the city is a member of his organization. But he told BW that he interprets the Black case as permitting search and retrieval fees for two tiers: voluminous and non-voluminous. He also says that since Boulder is a home-rule city, its ordinances take precedence over state law when there is a conflict between the two. While CORA conflicts with home-rule ordinances have never been adjudicated, Wilson says, open records could be an area in which Boulder decides to exert its local control and diverge from state law. But the city’s public records policy states that it is in accordance with CORA. Emails indicate that the city’s form letter appears to have originated from the office of City Attorney Tom Carr.

As BW reported after Carr was hired in 2010, the former Seattle city attorney arrived with a reputation for shielding government records from the public.

**** Boulder resident Mark Gelband is no stranger to CORA. His experience with open records illustrates the city’s policy and could shine light on the reasons behind it.

BW documented Gelband’s home construction obstacles in a Dec. 6 article. In a related issue, he’s been battling the city over multiple open records requests he filed since he started suspecting neighbors of getting beneficial treatment from city staff.

Between October and the end of November, Gelband filed 18 open records requests with various departments in city government, Huntley says. The city wants $2,975, $165 on average, to complete the searches. Gelband has only paid a portion, and most of his requests are in limbo.

In an email, Huntley appears to tell BW that the steep price tag or Boulder’s slow responses — or both — are on purpose. She says CORA “sets guidelines and limitations to balance any one individual’s ability to monopolize a government employee’s time or utilize taxpayer money to further a personal or business interest.”

Boulder can charge nominal fees and take up to 10 days for large requests, Zansberg says. But Huntley’s reasons for “balancing” one individual’s requests don’t appear in the text of CORA. Gelband is not alone. There are dozens of similar stories locally and around the state, such as the time Carol Affleck of the Valmont School District No. 4 Cemetery Association asked the city for documents about the cleanup at Valmont Butte and was slapped with a bill for more than $1,000. **** One state legislator took a shot at clearing the air on CORA. Unfortunately, he had to bail on the attempt. State Rep. Joe Salazar, D-Thornton, withdrew a bill this year that would have revised CORA with two purposes in mind: to allow greater access to records, and to ensure that citizens were following through and paying for records they requested.

“What I’d heard from various municipalities and public entities was that they would get these CORA requests from somebody out in the public that would require substantial time to fulfill, and then they’d have the documents ready for the person to pick up, and they never show up,” he says.

The city of Boulder requires payment before any research starts, which avoids this scenario. Salazar says he’d put an end to charging the full amount up front.

“I would look to change that,” he says. “We heard from the [Colorado] Press Association that they’re asked to pay up front, and lo and behold, the amount of time it took to fulfill the CORA request matches the amount of money that was asked to be put up front. And there really is no justification by the public entity on the amount of time actually spent to fulfill the CORA request.”

As for high costs, Salazar says he’s heard horror stories — and seen documentation of them.

“I have tons of people who have emailed me their CORA requests and then the response from the public entity, where the public entity — just on its face, the public entity was trying to make a profit off of the CORA request,” he says, “charging more money to respond to the request than what the employee makes

Again, Zansberg says public entities can’t pass through their full costs.

Salazar cites a few eye-popping numbers, like seeing $76 an hour for an electronic records search and $190 an hour “if the city attorney happens to review the CORA request” in Salida, which charges even more — $275 an hour — for the water attorney’s time.

“The only reason they would want to charge you,” Salazar says, “is A, to penalize you for filing a CORA request or B, to gain a profit off of it.”

Salazar says he withdrew the legislation after a “firestorm” over the language of the bill, and he plans to submit a revised version next year.

“Right now there is no cap on what people can charge,” he says. “That is the bottom line. That’s why you see some cities charging $190 an hour, that’s why you see others don’t charge anything at all. … This is supposed to bring some standardization.”

He says if entities want to continue not charging, they’d be able to do so under his proposal. **** Luis Toro, director of Colorado Ethics Watch, says the defensive, nontransparent approach being taken by government agencies when it comes to open records requests is troubling. He notes that Colorado got an “F” in access to public records in the State Integrity Investigation (www.stateintegrity.org).

Part of the problem, he says, is that in Colorado the only way to enforce CORA is to file a lawsuit and prevail in court against government attorneys. Sure, you might get your attorneys’ fees back in the end if you win, but government agencies are banking on the fact that individuals and newspapers won’t have the resources to pay up front for a lawsuit.

“Government entities can feel secure they can get away with a lot of stuff, especially if they perceive you don’t have a lawyer. If it’s just ordinary citizens not familiar with the ins and outs of open records law, they’ll often get pushed around because the city knows the only recourse is to find a lawyer and take you to court,” Toro says. “Sooner or later it’s going to be legally challenged.”

He says that HB 1041, the bill currently making its way through the state legislature that would prohibit government agencies from charging fees for records transmitted via email, has bogged down in part because some — including Marks — fear it opens the door to additional costs in other areas.

Toro says that as public agencies have started operating on tighter and tighter budgets — especially under the restrictions of Colorado’s Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights — they have started leaning more heavily on fees to keep them afloat.

But when it comes to open records, he says, their approach seems to be “you can have transparency if you can afford it, and that’s contrary to democracy.

“If the citizens can’t have free access to information about their government, how are we supposed to make educated decisions about what they’re doing?” Toro asks. “They get angry when people send them document requests, and kind of treat requesters as the enemy instead of the public, and they want to shift the cost onto the citizen, who is trying to exercise their right to know what the government is doing.”

A

s Boulder International Film Festival enters its ninth year, its founders, sisters Kathy and Robin Beeck, sit in a conference in their Pearl Street office, pondering the beast of an event they attempt to plan each year. They’re describing a new feature of this year’s festival, a singer-songwriter showcase, taking place at the filmmaker lounge, when they get asked how the idea for such an event came about.

They pause, looking at each other.

“Good question,” Kathy Beeck says with a laugh. “We don’t know.”

“We don’t even know,” Robin Beeck agrees.

“That’s how big this thing is,” Kathy Beeck says.

The festival, this year, brings 47 documentaries and feature films plus shorts to town, and the only two full-time employees acknowledge that it’s the enthusiasm and dedication of hundreds of volunteers that makes the festival run. They do know a few things about the showcase’s inception, of course, but as they talk about it, it’s clear that some unsung hero has taken the reins to make this part of the festival happen.

light some local talent here and hook them up with some filmmakers.”

The festival has about a halfdozen part-time employees (“Though they’re full-time this time of year!” Kathy Beeck jokes) and relies on its corps of 400 volunteers to make things run smoothly. And in a town like Boulder, that means the guy making sure that your walkie-talkies work properly could be a scientist at NIST (which happened one year).

There’s no theme to this year’s festival, but after the program was set, the Beecks looked at the lineup and realized the slate was full of music.

“You never know what your program’s going to be like every year, and this year we’ve discovered we have about eight great music films,” Robin Beeck says.

The opening night of the festival will feature Muscle Shoals, a Boulder-made documentary about the famous recording studio in Alabama. Also on the docket are documentaries about the wild Cream drummer Ginger Baker (Beware of Mr. Baker), Journey (Don’t Stop Believin’), a ’60s Detroit punk outfit (A Band Called see BIFF Page 14

Finding light in the darkness

Documentary tells story of Jews that escaped Holocaust in Ukrainian cave

omewhere in a Ukrainian cave, the film crew for No Place on Earth switched off their headlamps.

It was a request by 92-year-old Holocaust survivor Saul Stermer who, with every step, trekked deeper into his past. Director Janet Tobias slowly grew uneasy in the numbing darkness that shrouded the cave.

Five minutes robbed of eyesight was no big deal, but months? She couldn’t imagine it. But nearby, Stermer and his brother Sam Stermer both breathed sighs of relief.

“Saul said, ‘Ah, now I know where I am. Now I feel good,’” Tobias says.

“They felt safety in the darkness actually.

For them, the dark, dangerous place was outside because the world had turned upside down.”

The brothers are two of 38 Jews who hid in this cave system for 344 days during the Holocaust, which is the longest recorded underground survival in history.

Screening at this year’s Boulder International Film Festival, No Place on Earth documents how these families fought to be among the 5 percent in the area who survived World War II. An Emmy Award-winning director and producer who worked on shows like 60 Minutes and Dateline NBC, Tobias was eager to return to her storyteller role after a break in her career. However, when a friend from PBS told Tobias about this story, she initially said no.

But the biggest challenge by far was taking several survivors, now ranging in age from their 70s to their 90s, back to their original cave in Ukraine. Tobias says they had to take precautions when shooting this part of the film.

“Bringing older people in a cave actually required us to bring construction crews, a whole caving team, a safety rescue team with cavers and climbers,” Tobias says.

“If anything happened you had to get them out.”

The film is undoubtedly a Holocaust film, but for Tobias, it’s more than that. It’s a story about two brothers who risked their lives to gather supplies with the other men, and about the strong women who worked by candlelight to make a home for the children and elderly. Even in the blackness of a cold cave, Tobias says the story is about the prevailing comfort found in human connection.

“The film made me realize that we are all better as a group,” Tobias says.

“We can accomplish so much more when we do things together.”

n Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, the high school graduation rate is 40 percent. The New Public, a documentary by Jyllian Gunther, tells the story of a small group of high school teachers and administrators who tackle that problem by opening a small arts school in the middle of a troubled neighborhood.

Brooklyn Community Arts and Media High School (BCAM) starts out with about a hundred students and idealistic optimism on the part of the school’s teachers. The documentary follows a handful of teachers, administrators and students during the school’s first year, then revisits them as the students complete their senior year in high school.

A host of instantly likable characters populate the documentary. The film tracks one student, John, as he struggles with his sexuality in the face of an aloof, unaccepting mother. He sees college as the only way out of a suffocating home life.

Inner-city education is a touchy subject, but The New Public manages to present a non-judgmental examination of the growing pains at a new, alternative high school. There’s plenty to scoff at, if you’re the type that thinks the idea of kids getting grades for yoga and hiphop is unproductive. But the documentary doesn’t pass judgment on this and a variety of other potentially political issues, opting instead for a hands-off approach on potentially controversial subjects.

Buying some time for a climate change movement

Tim DeChristopher’s fraudulent auction bids and activism

T

im DeChristopher was a 27-year-old University of Utah economics student who’d spent five years teaching at-risk kids and was just beginning to get involved in activism around climate change when he found himself at a Bureau of Land Management land sale bidding on $1.8 million in leases. The BLM was auctioning 150,000 acres of southern Utah wilderness areas for oil and gas development, and during the auction, DeChristopher turned around and saw a fellow environmental activist crying. Compelled to overcome the “palpable feeling of helplessness,” he started bidding, and won nearly a dozen bids in a row — some for parcels of land that were adjacent to Arches and Canyonlands national parks. He walked out knowing that these fake bids would be enough to get him imprisoned, but it was, he says, an act of civil disobedience.

DeChrisopher had been looking for a leader in the environmental movement. What he’d just done was about to propel him into that seat — and the film, Bidder 70, by Beth and George Gage, charts his progress from an unknown guy who happened to get an auction paddle in his hand to a man who regularly spoke to thousands of activists while the courts postponed his trial again and again.

It was December 2008 when he participated in that auction — participation for which he was convicted of two felonies and faced up to 10 years in prison — and his trial didn’t begin until February 2011, ending in his March 2011 incarceration.

George and Beth Gage, Telluride residents, filmmakers since 1993 and creators of American Outrage, picked up on his story from the first news reports after the auction. The pair met DeChristopher just a few weeks later at the Wild and Scenic Film Festival.

him, documenting his growing presence in the environmental movement, including as a founding member of Peaceful Uprising, an activist organization that works to empower people to fight climate change.

Although DeChristopher is certainly the film’s central character, to say that it’s solely about him would be to sell it short. What his story relays is also the growth and change in the environmental movement around the country, a movement that, as DeChristopher says, will either have to start producing results, or quit because it’s too late.

“Tim’s idea of this movie is, ‘We’re going to string a lot of my speeches together and we’re going to get my message across,’” George Gage says, “And Beth kept saying, ‘Tim, we want to spend personal time with you. We want the audience to get to know you not only as an activist, not only as a speaker, but as a human being.’”

“One of the things that was sort of difficult, especially in the beginning of the film, was Tim never was just bidding because he cared about the land,” Beth Gage says. “He definitely cares about the land and that was very important to him, but it was always

much more about global warming, climate change, climate justice, all of those issues.”

DeChristopher was offered plea deals that would have kept him out of jail, but declined to take them. That he was willing to serve time for his act of civil disobedience adds veracity to his principles, says Beth Gage.

“One of the things in Tim’s message is everybody’s got to look inside his soul and say, ‘How far am I willing to go?’” George Gage says. “And I would like to think that Tim has inspired — not thousands of people to get arrested — but thousands and thousands of people to go that one step further, to go a little bit outside their comfort zone and go a little bit further to stand up for what they think is right in this country.”

At the Human Rights Watch Film Festival, the Gages were asked if they thought climate change is a human rights issue.

“They said, ‘We really loved your film and we’ve been grappling with the idea, is climate change a human rights issue?’ and they’ve come to the conclusion that it is. And that’s the same conclusion that Tim has come to,” Beth Gage says. “He calls it climate justice because the people who are the most severely impacted by climate change around the world are the people who have the least responsibility for climate change.”

DeChristopher had stepped away from his leadership role at Peaceful Uprising before his trial and sentencing, but the group continued to organize and gathered 800 to 1,000 people to attend a march the day his trial started, according to Henia Belalia, current director of Peaceful Uprising.

Spalding and the Ocean Foundation have worked with Weller to raise and disburse funds for the project.

For Young and Weller, The Last Ocean is a wake-up call. It’s a film to “make us understand this beast that we’re all part of: the global economy,” says Young. “We need to be conscious of it.”

Weller says he believes the Ross Sea is “one of the only places on this earth that we [as humans] have not intrinsically changed because of our industry.”

If the global community can work together to stop fishing in the Ross Sea, Weller, Young and their fleet of scientists say the ecosystem can be saved.

“It’s a film to provide hope,” Young says. “I’m an optimist, and that’s what’s kept me going for the last six years.”

and got arrested “in solidarity with him and in outrage with the sentence that he’d received,” Belalia says.

After 18 months in jail, DeChristopher was released to a halfway house in Salt Lake City, and works days at a rare book store. In April, he’ll be freed, just in time for an Earth Day screening of Bidder 70 in Salt Lake City and coordinated screenings, along with a Skype-broadcast Q&A, across the coun-

try. In addition to the year and a half in jail, and the three years prior to that waiting for a trial and sentencing, he’ll face another three years of probation.

The land he bid on has never been re-auctioned — the Obama administration invalidated the auction and shelved 77 contested lease parcels before DeChristopher was even sentenced to serve time.

magine a trove of knowledge as vast and extensive as the famous Library of Alexandria, heralded for its archives of literature from antiquity and destroyed in the first centuries of the Common Era — burned, in the best of the legends about its destruction, in a fire that took six months to work through the documents that contained what was then the best and most comprehensive collection of the world’s knowledge. Imagine a collection that big burning in an even slower fire, one that was eating away at some 17,000 volumes that catalogued a thousand years of study on Buddhism, and one man stepping in to beat the flames back.

“It wasn’t a fire that would have happened in a day that wiped it out, it was happening over 20 years and Gene saw that and prevented it from being destroyed,” says Gregory Beier, director of sustainability for the Tibetan Buddhist Resource Center. “He saw that the library of Tibet was burning, the great library of Alexandria of Tibet metaphorically speaking, was burning and he thought that it shouldn’t go and he saved it.”

Gene Smith grew up in Utah, a Mormon who was accepted to West Point but turned away at the last minute and, because it was during the Vietnam War, enrolled at the University of Washington in the study of the language he thought would take him the longest time to learn: Tibetan. That study opened the door to him traveling to Delhi, India, where he continued studying Tibetan Buddhism and took a day job

A

t the time Little World was being filmed, Barcelona native Est. 1998 Colorado Albert Casals was a 20-yearold world traveler. But nothing about the way that Albert views the world or travels through it resembles what most of us think of or do as we go from place to place.

Albert Casals’ version of travel is the equivalent of doing a solo ascent on K2 without oxygen and wearing only your underwear. It’s adventure travel without map or net.

Yet even so, Albert’s extraordinary travels are only one character in this magical film that explores the power of passion, love and family with a sincerity that will leave the viewer challenged to make more of every GoLite Bouldermoment and breath they take.

From the age of 15, Albert began to travel the world alone. He would leave his house with 20 euros and stay gone for weeks and months, hitchhiking in his wheelchair, sneaking onto ships and trains to get to exotic Third-World locations, all along the way living entirely off of the kindness of strangers.

This film explores the love of a father and son as surely as it shares Albert’s unquenchable joy for being alive, regardless of whether his circumstances are difficult, life-threatening or exhilarating.

Little World follows Albert as he leaves home in his wheelchair with his young girlfriend Ana in tow to hitchhike some 20,000 miles from his home in Spain to the point on the planet that is the very farthest away, a lighthouse on the East Cape in New Zealand.

This isn’t Discovery Channel. There’s no camera crew along for the journey and no off-camera support team ready to swoop in when things go wrong, which they sometimes do.

The only constant is the irrepressible spirit of Albert Casals.

n 2005, Jonathan Holiff was living in Los Angeles, working hard at his agency, The Hollywood-Madison Group. He hooked up celebrities with Fortune 500 companies for product endorsements; one of his biggest successes was getting Jessica Simpson together with Chicken of the Sea while the singer had a reality show on MTV. His father, Saul, was Johnny Cash’s manager from 1960 to 1973, and Jonathan had followed his father’s footsteps into show business. However, he wasn’t close to his parents. In fact, in the 20 years since he had left home, he had spent just 17 days visiting them. That all changed when he got the phone call from his mom. His father had killed himself.

“Only after he died in 2005 did I realize that I was trying to be bigger than he ever was in order to get his attention, if not love or respect,” Holiff says.

Jonathan asked when the funeral was. Saul had specified there wouldn’t be one. When’s the memorial service? Saul didn’t want one of those, either. Why, then, was his mother calling? Just to notify Jonathan of his father’s passing. Take care.

There was no note.

“I immediately fell apart,” Holiff says. “I finally came to the realization that I was only in Boulder Weekly

Hollywood to prove something to a guy who was now dead, and impossible to get his approval from.

So I just closed up shop and went back to Canada.”

He spent some time with his mom in Canada, helping pick up the pieces his father left behind.

At the same time, the Johnny Cash biopic Walk The Line began picking up steam and buzz.

Suddenly, there was interest in his father, and reporters were calling the house asking questions, wondering if there was any memorabilia left behind. Jonathan said no, but then his mom tapped him on the shoulder. Actually, there was something, she said, and handed him a key to a storage locker.

It took Jonathan two trips to get the courage to open it. But after he saw Walk The Line, he went straight to the locker and looked inside. He found a locker full of Johnny Cash memorabilia — gold records, signed posters, and a treasure trove: 60 hours of reel-to-reel tape, Saul’s audio diaries as well as recorded phone calls with the Man in Black himself.

He decided to make a documentary. My Father and the Man in Black tells Saul’s story as discovered by his son. Saul dropped out of school in the eighth grade to help provide for his family during the Great Depression, and as he became an adult

he opened up a series of businesses, always trying to out-entrepreneur the competition. He promoted country music shows as a way to boost a drive-in restaurant he owned, and it’s there he met Johnny Cash.

The two hit it off, and Saul eventually became Cash’s manager. But this was during Cash’s preevangelist days, and his life was ruled by drugs. In one letter that Jonathan discovered, Cash admits to his father that at one point he was up to “100 pills a day” and a “case of beer.” This prolific amount of booze and drugs eventually took a vicious toll on Cash’s body; he hit rock bottom.

Johnny canceled some of his shows at the last minute, leaving Saul holding the bag, scrambling to book shows for Cash after all the major promoters became alienated. And as Johnny’s career spiraled downwards, Saul had to work harder and harder, and his family received less and less of his attention.

My Father and the Man in Black, through reenactments and actual audio from the tapes Jonathan found in his father’s storage closet, tells the story of how Saul helped launch Cash’s career, pulled him from the gutter, introduced him to June Carter and more. In ‘Defiant Requiem,’ music becomes an act of rebellion

W

hen Czech conductor Rafael Schächter was imprisoned in the Terezin concentration camp during World War II, one of the musical scores he brought with him was Giuseppe Verdi’s Requiem.

Unbeknownst to the Nazis, Schächter began assembling a choir and organizing clandestine rehearsals of the piece, as both a creative distraction for the captive Jews and an act of defiance against the Germans.

Schächter reimagined the Catholic mass as a message for his captors, as a reminder to them that one day their crimes against the Jews will be uncovered and they will face consequences.

But with lines like, “How great will be the terror when the judge comes who will smash everything completely,” and “Whatever is hidden shall be revealed and nothing shall remain unavenged,” there was no way he could have his choir sing the lyrics in German and get away with it. So he translated the words into Latin, and, without sheet music or written lyrics, Schächter taught his makeshift choir the music and Latin phrases in person, verbally, until they had memorized it.

Despite the fact that on several occasions the ranks of his choir were decimated when members were hauled off to their death at Auschwitz, Schächter and the chorus performed the challenging piece 16 times.

And in 1944, they delivered their final performance right in the face of Nazi leaders during a site visit from the International Red Cross in which the Germans tried to create the impression that the concentration camp was an idyllic town set aside for the Jews with all of the comforts of home. Schächter and the remaining choir members were shipped off to Auschwitz soon afterwards.

formances, will be in town this week for the Boulder International Film Festival (BIFF), which will screen Defiant Requiem, a documentary that tells the story of Schächter and his choir.

Edgar Krasa, who survived Auschwitz by gaining a work detail as a welder at a railroad repair shop, and his wife Hana, another Terezin survivor, went on to see two of their sons sing the piece in 2009 as part of a reenactment performance organized by conductor Murry Sidlin. (Sidlin learned about the story of Schächter by chance after picking up a book called Music at Terezin and dedicated himself to honoring the Jewish performers and Holocaust victims by conducting the piece at Terezin and other locations around the world.)

Edgar and Hana Krasa will attend the BIFF screening, along with Director/Writer/Producer Doug Shultz and Executive Producer Whitney Johnson. In a phone interview with BW, Edgar Krasa described what Schächter did as “transform a mass for the dead into a mass for the dead Nazis,” and in so doing, make life better for the imprisoned Jews through the power of music. At one point just before the final performance in front of

the Germans, Schächter told his performers they were free to bow out if they didn’t want to take the risk.

“Nobody left,” Krasa recalls, adding that the depleted choir did not meet Schächter’s high standards for that final performance. “He was not satisfied with the composition of the choir, but he had the opportunity to have the Germans in front of them and sing this to their faces.”

When asked about what it was like to return to Terezin and watch the piece performed again, this time with two sons in the choir, Krasa says, “It was really nice. … If I still had a good voice I would have sung too.”

Shultz, the writer and director, told BW that the project initially started as a straightforward filming of Sidlin’s concert at Terezin, but it grew into a documentary that features interviews with survivors of Terezin and animations developed from surviving drawings depicting life at Terezin by artists imprisoned there.

“The last thing anybody wants is to watch another Holocaust film, really,” Shultz says. “But then when you hear this story, it taps into some different place, in terms of the power of the human spirit. To create under those circumstances is pretty incredible.”

He adds that the reaction to the film has been overwhelming.

“There have been screenings where people have given me a hug afterwards,” Shultz says.

Seeking Asian Female

D

espite opening with interviews of white men looking for Asian women, Seeking Asian Female is about one white man, one Asian woman and one documentarian.

While Seeking Asian Female opens with a few questions about Asiaphiles, it addresses much more universal ones about cultural chasms, love and the art of documentary-making by examining a particular relationship.

Seeking Asian Female’s white man is Steven, a twice-divorced 60-year-old cashier at the San Francisco airport. He is nervous, talkative and shockingly honest.

He’s also immediately awkward. “Steven is making me uncomfortable,” camerawoman and director Debbie Lum says in voiceover as he compliments her “very Chinese” appearance and asks to take her photo.

Steven’s head-over-heels for Sandy (an adopted English-language name).

She’s half his age and agrees to marry him — or at least come to the U.S. on a fiancé visa — without ever having met him. And while that sounds fishy, interviews show Sandy sees something

unique and fascinating in Steven. But their relationship isn’t going to be easy.

And Lum is in the middle, an atleast-third-generation ChineseAmerican who learned Chinese on a trip there in college. Given Sandy’s grasp on English and Steven’s on Chinese, Lum is suddenly thrown into the fray.

“Last night Sandy found thousands of pictures of Steven’s ex-girlfriend Molly on his computer,” she says.

“And now Steven wants my help translating their argument.”

Lum is the couple’s “oncall translator” in that argument and several others.

Steven tells her Sandy said, “If it wasn’t for Debbie, I’d be back in China now.” If it wasn’t for Lum, indeed, it’s hard to imagine Steven and Sandy getting very far at all.

All documentarians care about their subjects. But should they care this much?

exas choreographer Allison Orr does things the hard way. And as viewers of filmmaker Andrew Garrison’s Trash Dance will come to appreciate, the whole world is a better place because of her seeming lack of common sense.

On some level, Orr is either an idealist or a masochist. She has the audacity to believe that art can transform lives by allowing individuals to show their true selves to complete strangers by communicating through the common language of art.

Orr’s art project to prove her thesis is a choreographed dance of sorts using a couple dozen giant trash trucks and their associated crews. Most of these modestly paid folk have second jobs, many are single parents, and it is clear from the onset of the project that few, if any, have time or desire to put on a show they don’t understand for the local population who see them as secondBoulder Weekly

class citizens with nothing to offer but sweat and a tolerance for bad smells.

But Orr is unflappable. She spends months working with the crews, throwing trash, picking up dead animals, all the while convincing them to give her their time for the sake of art.

Some eventually agree, and after weeks of practice, the day of the show arrives. Despite a raging downpour at the old airport runway that serves as the stage, a sold-out crowd of thousands attends Orr’s Trash Dance and no one is disappointed. The performance is touching, fun and even beautiful at times. But more importantly, for the men and women putting on the show and those watching, it offers proof that art can reach across any void, selfinflicted or societal, to connect us all.

Trash Dance will screen at the Boulder Theater at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 17.

Only kinda good, fellas ‘Gangster Squad’ talks the talk, walks crooked

N

othing brings back memories of Sean Penn’s history as a serial domestic abuser like watching him revel in a man being drawn-andquartered by automobiles. What a weird choice to take a cheesy, scene-chewing, 1940s mob-boss role at this point in his career. Cross-apply the same bewilderment to the decisions of Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin. Nick Nolte and Giovanni Ribisi? No, that seems about right…

Director Ruben Fleischer’s Gangster Squad should have drawn talent the likes of Nolte, Ribisi and Robert Patrick, but the influx of A-list talent like Stone, Gosling and Brolin is downright perplexing. Or, to put it in screenwriter Will Beall’s unnecessarily stylish dialogue: “It’s a square deal, dollface; quit screwing up your peepers!” In an ideal world, this film is The Untouchables-lite; in the real world, it’s more reminiscent of the Christian Slater, Patrick Dempsey and Richard Greico life-changing opus Mobsters.

Penn plays Mickey Cohen, a real-life gangster portrayed here as a frothing goblin. Honest cop John O’Mara (Brolin) is told to recruit a task force to use “guerilla warfare” on Cohen’s mob operation. So he snags a sensitive bad boy (Gosling), a gunhand (Patrick), a smartypants (Ribisi) and a “man of the streets” (Anthony Mackie). While all characters are about as deep as a twoline casting call description, Mackie’s is borderline offensive. That is, if you find it repellant that the one minority character carries a switchblade and talks about “his streets” a lot.

Since her current “where-did-she-go” slimmed-down appearance suggests Gangster Squad may be the last time we see a healthy Emma Stone, it was nice of them to pour her into dresses with nostril-high leg slits. But while her rasp is perfect for 1940s-era smoking culture, she isn’t given more to do than bat her still impressive eyes at Gosling while he gets “in too deep.”

At its best, Gangster Squad is dumbass fun. At its worst, you’ll find yourself wondering whether Gosling is doing a bizarre high-pitched semi-lisp accent because he’s trying to keep himself entertained. The action set pieces don’t pop until a satisfactory ending, and it’s hard to care who lives and dies when our depth of knowledge on these characters consists of “that one likes science.”

One interesting thought: Despite the fact that Gangster Squad is only slightly more historically accurate than Inglourious Basterds, it does remind us that America has had a “gun culture” since its inception. The evolution of the “Wild Wild West” into mob-controlled Los Angeles is a straight line. I don’t know that Gangster Squad actually makes any commentary about the significance of that. However, with entertainment being somehow pulled in as an equal partner with actual assault weapons as the root of modern violence, maybe it’s best to remember “Hollywoodland” was founded by shooting guns; it didn’t shoot movies about guns until much later.

A

s craft brewing explodes, businesses along the fringes of the industry — from hop farmers to distributors to liquor stores — are booming as well. And, as with the beer itself, Boulder County is taking the lead.

Mobile Canning, a Longmont business that roadtrips to breweries, sets up its canning unit and packages their beer, is helping Colorado’s small brewers get their products on liquor store shelves.

The only company in Colorado offering mobile packaging to craft brewers, Mobile Canning got its start when co-founder Pat Hartman realized he wasn’t going to cut it in the brewery world.

“I realized that, you know, I don’t make that good of beer. … I came across the idea of mobile packaging and was like, well, cans are the superior package,” he says.

There are a variety of arguments for canning instead of bottling beer — arguments that Brian O’Connell, chief beer officer and founder of Denver’s popular Renegade Brewing, is happy to run through.

“Cans are a better package,” he says. “There’s no light penetration and there’s no oxygen penetration, and those are the two biggest spoilers for beer. They’re also a lot more energy efficient, they’re lighter, they cool a lot faster, [it takes] less energy to recycle them. Colorado’s an outdoorsy state, and bottles don’t travel very well and cans do.”

Renegade has been canning its rye IPA, Ryeteous, through Mobile Canning for about eight months, and recently started the process with two other beers, Elevation Imperial IPA and 5 O’Clock, a blonde session ale.

As Hartman points out, Colorado beer drinkers in particular should appreciate the convenience of cans.

“Floating down the river or backpacking, drinking it right out of the vessel, glass just doesn’t make sense,” he says.

Tom Horst, owner and brewmaster of Boulder’s Crystal Springs Brewing Company, brings up one more point. He

says Crystal Springs’ Summertime Ale, a kolsch-style beer, wasn’t keeping its flavor for very long.

“It doesn’t really do well in a bottle,” he says. “It’s a beer that needs to be pretty fresh. So I wanted to see how it went with the can, and it’s worked out just wonderfully for us.”

Crystal Springs also cans its South Ridge Amber with Mobile Canning.

The centerpiece of Mobile Canning’s operation is basically a 10-foot-long table on wheels. A conveyor belt carries freshly cleaned empty cans through a four-step process, filling them first with carbon dioxide, then filling them with beer, then topping them with familiar aluminum punch-top lids and finally sealing the lids so no air can escape — and, more see CANNING Page 44

enturies ago, Chinese identity was firmly rooted in the concept of Sinocentrism, which held that China was the only civilized nation.

Remnants of this notion still exist today, and this concept even affects the vocabulary used in ordering tomato beef chow mein. Essentially the Sinocentric view held that neighboring states, such as Japan or Korea, were subservient entities beholden to China. Beyond those states, the rest of the world was considered foreign or barbarian. Items not native to China would be prefaced by the adjective “barbarian.” Fan qie is Chinese for tomato, and this phrasing literally translates to “barbarian eggplant.”

The receptive server said yes, and the dish arrived soon after. From an appearance standpoint, it looked as it should, with crunchy bird’s nest-shaped mounds of noodles dotted with colorful vegetables. The gravy was a touch salty — I’d ask for a smidgen of curry next time to liven things up. But overall, this customized plate was a more than adequate replication of a favored

childhood dish, and I’m likely to come back for more.

Like most decent Chinese restaurants, Five Spice is a pleasantly unfussy place, with straightforward service and reasonable prices. But perhaps more important, it’s also a place that can convincingly recreate youthful culinary memories, and it’s awfully hard to put a price tag on that attribute.

BRU PLANS NEW RESTAURANT

BRU, the Boulder nanobrewery started last year by local chef Ian Clark, has announced it will open a restaurant in East Boulder. BRU Handbuilt Ales and Eats, set to occupy 5290 Arapahoe Ave., aims to open by midApril, according to a press release.

BRU’s menu will feature “rustic, approachable cuisine” that will include the use of a wood-burning oven. The press release mentions house-made goat milk ricotta, oven-roasted shishito peppers and wood oven pizza with toppings like chicken sausage, fennel and spinach.

The restaurant marks a departure for Clark from the Big Red F Restaurant Group. Clark has held chef positions for that group at Jax Fish House and El Centro.

importantly, no air can infiltrate.

“Since these are not can-conditioned, we don’t want any oxygen in there,” Hartman says, which is why the cans are first filled with carbon dioxide — so any remaining gas in the can is CO2, not air.

The unit was designed collaboratively with Wild Goose Canning Technologies in Boulder, Hartman says.

The companies engineered a unit that could withstand road trips and still precisely seal the tops of cans.

“We roll this right into the brewery, and if you picture the bright tank sitting right there,” Hartman says, gesturing around Mobile Canning’s Longmont warehouse, “we try to get as close as we can.”

These days, they’re getting particularly close with Renegade. O’Connell estimates he’ll have Mobile Canning in “probably once a week” now that the Denver brewer is canning three of its beers. Even with that frequency, O’Connell says Mobile Canning is a better option than trying to upgrade his facility.

“We have no space for a canning line,” he says. “The day that they’re in here we’re jammed in here.”

Hartman says Mobile Canning primarily serves smaller breweries like Renegade that don’t have the capital, capacity or space to start canning on a rigorous schedule. But Mobile Canning also serves Boulder Beer Company, a brewery that has long bottled its beer.

When Boulder Beer decided to start canning some of its brews, the company contacted Hartman.

“Their manual canner is up on the shelf and it’s still there. We look at it every time we’re down there,” he says.

Mobile Canning may be the only company of its kind in Colorado, but it’s working to spread the concept, setting up a network of companies under the Mobile Canning brand in other states.

This affiliate program, Hartman says, comes in response to inquiries from across the country about how to replicate Mobile Canning’s model.

So far, affiliates in four other states — New York, Virginia, Ohio and Michigan — have made progress on opening their businesses, with more on the way, Hartman says.

“We basically provide a full package that helps them get started, helps them with operational support down the road.

If they’re going to have a problem in the field, they’re going to call us and most likely we’ve run across it,” Hartman says. “If we haven’t, then we’ll work collectively on it together.”

As the Mobile Canning brand expands, the operation here in Boulder County will as well. Hartman says the company is building a second unit “just to keep up with demand.”

As for Renegade and Crystal Springs, you can find Renegade’s Ryeteous, 5 O’Clock and Elevation in several Boulder liquor stores. Mountain Sun’s Stout Month pushes boundaries of black beer

o, America: Stop making beer worse.

I’m sorry. It’s Stout Month and I shouldn’t be so irritable. And I shouldn’t kick off what is mostly a glowing column that way. But by far, the biggest takeaway from a trip to Mountain Sun Pub & Brewery during the month dedicated to the darkest of beers is: “American” in a beer name is a big red flag.

I love stouts. The malt, the depth, the high alcohol, the subtle or bold sweetness. They’re glorious.

But both of the “American” stouts on tap, Dropkick American and Megatron American Imperial, had way too much American.

So no, I don’t mean Americanmade beer. But the “American” modifier evidently means it’s all about bitterness.

The Megatron was about as hoppy as an IPA, no lie. The Dropkick wasn’t far behind. It’s just wrong. I know, I’m in Boulder. I should expect hops topping my organic flatbread and mixed in my granola. But I cannot abide a hoppy stout.

Especially when there are so many other things you can do with the blackest beer. Mountain Sun has also brewed up 48 Smooth Chai Stout, Norwegian Wheat, Dark Harvest Pumpkin and a lot more permutations of stouts, on steady rotation throughout February.

And those are awesome. I’m all in favor of experimentation and playing with stout styles, as the rapidly drained Oatimus Prime Imperial and Sharkbite Boulder Weekly

The Chai, while a little thinner and lighter than most stouts, is smooth, mild and perfectly spiced. Oatimus Prime is a tour of my favorite stout flavors: first sugary, then alcoholic, then finishing with coffee. Elizabeth and Jeff extol the Norwegian Wheat’s nutty, chocolate-cherry complexity. The pumpkin beer’s perfect cinnamon spice highlights another delicious direction for the style.

And eventually, the only tasters left are those two monuments to hop obsession. Like the Chai, Dropkick’s on the thinner side, but where the former is mild and simple, the latter is bitter.

Megatron, meanwhile, truly is as hoppy and sharp as an IPA. But now I know. And on the other 10 or more trips I’ll make to the Mountain Sun restaurants before the end of the month, I’ll dodge the Americans and keep Stout Month malty. After all, the Suns are averaging about seven stouts on tap at any given time. Finding some killer beers won’t be hard.

And at least now, everyone in Boulder who wants every beer to have a hoppy bite will know the magic word.
