Geared up for the holidays

xpensive mountaineering gear is not generally where you want to drop a lot of cash on a trendy item. There are a few items popping up in outdoor stores this year that may last longer than this year’s snowfall, but the debate is still on over rocker skis.

Rocker skis reverse the typical camber of a ski, curving the tip and tail up. The arc lets skiers stay on top of snow — the phrase habitually used is that these skis “float through powder.”

“It’s definitely a trend that’s here to stay,” says Marily MacDonald, marketing director for Outdoor Divas.

Designers are mixing up the use of the early rise in the tips and tail with skis that don’t use the reverse camber. The result has been a more versatile ski.

“Comparing last year to this year, the industry has picked it up in a lot of different ways. Before they thought rocker was just for riding in really deep powder and now we’re seeing it all across the board,” said Alison Lasure, market, sales and product expert for REI Boulder.

The reverse camber design has also carried over to snowboards. For both skis and boards, the design helps beginners initiate turns.

“Not only does it help you float in powder but it’s going to help you initiate your turns and keep you from catching your tips,” Lasure says.

People looking for a great all-mountain ski have started to turn to rocker skis, she says, particularly with the industry adding more options for the design’s use this year.

“I’d say it’s definitely something people are coming in and looking for in a new pair of skis,” says Lasure. “And having gone out and demoed this year’s gear, it’s definitely something I’d recommend for people who are just getting back into [it] — or those who are experts.”

Different manufacturers are using different names for the design, Lasure says, so identifying those skis with the reversed camber or early lift in the tips can get a bit confusing if you’re just reading labels. She suggests putting two skis on base-tobase so you can compare their profiles, or laying them on the floor to see where the tips pick up.

seeing many rockers with the reverse camber.

“I think it’s probably one of those things that people who have multiple skis, a large quiver of skis, are getting a rocker pair for those deep powder days, but most people are still in the one quiver skis and need a good-all around ski,” he says.

A moderate to considerable side cut is showing up a lot, and early rise tip and tail but with the standard camber has been popular, he said, and he’s heard people say that design provides better control on packed terrain, where rockers start to lose it.

Rockers are not taking over the way shape skis did with straight skis, he said, but they are building a reputation for being quite a bit of fun in loose snow.

His big sellers this year have been goggles and helmets, particularly for youth.

At Outdoor Divas, ski helmets have also become the territory of the every-skier. They retail for between $100 and $180.

“It seems like more people wear them than not,” MacDonald says. “If you go to the resort and you’re not wearing a helmet, people are kind of like, ‘What’s wrong with you, man? Where’s your helmet?”

Designs are streamlining to be less bobbleheady, she says. Women’s ski pants are also becoming fitted, cut more like jeans.

“People are still not tucking them in the boots I don’t think quite yet, but it’s definitely not like the boy pants,” she says.

Burton, Patagonia and Cloudveil have all come up with some of these slimming designs. This year’s outerwear is coming out with more details like embroidered flowers and trim pieces to add a little extra flair.

And versatility is in.

“We’re seeing a lot of winter running apparel that’s kind of multi-use. You could wear it running or skiing,” she says. A lot of that apparel is being made from wicking fleece materials. “It’s great as a next-to-skin layer because it’s going to pull the moisture away from you so you’re going to stay warm, not wet and cold after the fact.”

For the man in doubt of what to buy, Outdoor Divas is hosting a men’s shopping night in midDecember.

“We’re giving them pizza and beer and hoping they can find something for the diva in their life,” MacDonald says.

At REI, popular items in all price ranges are popping up this year.

The Black Diamond Spot ($39.95) headlamp has bumped the lumens from 60 to 75 and added red lights for night vision, and it’s turning out to be a great socking stuffer, Lasure says. The DeLorme Earthmate PN-60W with Spot Satellite Messenger ($559.95) combines the GPS technology that keeps you safe with a satellite messaging system to send messages to family and friends to let them know how you’re doing and where you are. The previous model of the Spot only allowed for sending preprogrammed messages (Think: “Hey, Mom, I’m OK,” on repeat). The new model allows for freeform texting, meaning you can type messages as you go, and can link messages and photos to your social network accounts.

For kids, REI staff has been taking a lot of calls on the EyeClops Night Vision 2.0 Infrared Stealth Binoculars ($50), which sold out over the Black Friday weekend. (The store now has more in stock, though, and is expecting additional shipments soon.) The EyeClops runs on AA batteries to provide night vision for up to 50 feet in total darkness.

And, for the big kids, wearable camcorders have proved popular. The GoPro Digital Helmet Hero HD Wide-Angle Camera ($299) and the Contour HD 1080P Wearable Camcorder ($279) have been the more popular models.

“They’re real small; you could take them out mountain biking on your helmet,” Lasure says. “I’ve had friends take them down Boulder Creek tubing this summer and up on Loveland Pass skiing, so it’s been a real popular give with the young active crowd.”

In outerwear, she’s also been hearing some rave reviews of Columbia’s new Omni technology, designed to reflect body heat and keep the wearer up to 20 percent warmer.

olorado has been called the Napa Valley of beer, and with good reason: Beers from our fair state frequently top the podium at national and international competitions, and a new brewery or pub seems to open with each passing month. The holidays offer breweries a chance to make a beer specialized for drinking during the colder months; here is a sample of some of the seasonal brews offered by area breweries.

TWISTED PINE Name: Old Jubilation Ale Style: English Strong Ale Flavor: Made with bullion hops and a variety of malts. A hint of hazelnuts and a finish reminiscent of mocha and toffee. Cellarable for two years.

Thinking inside the box The season’s hottest DVD and CD box sets

by Alan Sculley his wasn’t a plentiful year for CD and DVD box sets — the kind of releases that make special holiday gifts for music fans. But there weren’t many misses in this year’s crop of releases, either. Here are the best of the bunch, to this reviewer’s ears and eyes.

Box Sets Bruce Springsteen: The Promise: The Darkness on the Edge of Town Story (Columbia) — Even if you aren’t already a Springsteen fan, you’ll find a lot to love about this three CD/three DVD set. For starters, there’s the remastered version of the 1978 CD, Darkness on the Edge of Town, perhaps Springsteen’s most important album — a gritty and personal portrait of determination and struggle in a challenging world. Two more discs include nearly two dozen outtakes from the Darkness sessions that show the breadth and variety of music he wrote from 1975 through 1978. The real highlight, though, is the DVD of a complete three-hour 1978 concert from Houston. For all of the virtues of the Darkness CD, it didn’t come close to capturing how explosive anthems like “Badlands,” “Streets Of Fire” and the extended version of “Prove It All Night” became in concert. To fully understand Springsteen, seeing him live was essential, and this was the tour that established Springsteen and the E Street Band as rock’s best live act. Rounded out by a great documentary about the struggles to create the Darkness album and another DVD of rehearsals and live performances, there’s never been a better deluxe reissue of a single album than this. — Rating: **** the big lebowski $9.99

John Mellencamp: On the Rural Route 7609 (Mercury/Island/UME) — John Mellencamp has always been one of rock’s true rebels. So it makes sense that he didn’t make the typical career retrospective box set with On the Rural Route 7609. Instead, he chose songs he felt best told his musical life story, mixing in a good number of alternate versions of familiar songs and lesser-known, but illuminating, album tracks. What emerges is a portrait of an artist who grew from being a brash and generic young rocker into one of rock’s most compelling songwriters, and an artist with plenty of insights into the human condition and life in America over the past 30 years. — Rating: **** Wilson Pickett: Funky Midnight Mover: The Atlantic Studio Recordings (1962-1978) (Rhino Handmade/Atlantic) — It’s about time Picket got a box set, and this one does it right. In addition to essential hits like “In The Midnight Hour,” “Mustang Sally” and “Land Of 1,000 Dances,” the set has lots of overlooked album tracks and a full disc of alternate takes and unreleased songs, Gift Guide II 2010 Boulder Weekly

some of which (the surprisingly tender “I Hope She’ll Be Happier With Him” and the funky soul of “Many Roads To Travel”) shouldn’t have been shelved in the first place. — Rating ****1/2

Other worthy box sets/multi-disc collections: Bee Gees: Mythology (Rhino) — One disc each is devoted to songs sung by Barry, Robin and Maurice (the Bee Gees) plus one for younger brother Andy.

Bob Dylan: The Bootleg Series, Vol. 9: The Witmark Demos 19621964 (Columbia) — Two discs feature some of Dylan’s earliest songs written for song publisher M. Witmark & Sons.

Otis Redding: Live On The Sunset Strip (Stax) — This two-CD set expands and improves on a pair of previously released live albums — 1968’s In Person at the Whisky A Go Go, and 1993’s Good to Me: Recorded Live at the Whisky, Vol. 2. Sweet soul music, for sure.

DVDs Various Artists: The Best of Soul Train (Time/Life) — Three DVDs from this enduring show (taken mostly from 1972 through 1979) present a who’s who of soul and R&B. Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Barry White, The O’Jays, The Commodores, Curtis Mayfield, James Brown, The Isley Brothers, Sly and the Family Stone — they’re all here and in prime form. — Rating: **** Various Artists: The 25th Anniversary Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Concerts (Time/Life) — History and some amazing performances came together during these two anniversary concerts. The 51 performances produce plenty of highlights, including a fiery version of “Woodstock” by Crosby, Stills & Nash, Jeff Beck unleashing a wicked guitar solo while sitting in with Stevie Wonder on “Superstition,” and U2 backing Springsteen and Patti Smith on a fevered version of “Because The Night.” The list goes on. The performances were not all perfect (such events never are), but they were inspired, and it’s clear the 25th Anniversary concerts will be a tough act to follow when year 50 rolls around.— Rating: ****1/2 Michael Jackson: Michael Jackson’s Vision (Epic/Legacy) — For as much history as Michael Jackson made with his music in bridging the boundaries between R&B and pop, perhaps his most lasting impact will be in taking the music video to a whole new level of creativity and technical sophistication. Michael Jackson’s Vision collects all 33 of his videos, including groundbreaker “Billie Jean” and the “Thriller” mini-movie. It makes for a set that will stand as a lasting document of Jackson’s ambition and creativity, while being highly entertaining at the same time. — Rating: ****1/2 Various Artists: Eric Clapton Crossroads Guitar Festival 2010 (Rhino/Reprise) — The event, held this past summer, marked the third time Clapton hosted his all-day, all-star gathering of guitar greats.

This two-DVD set captures more than four hours from the event, including plenty of on-stage collaborations. It’s a kick to see Vince Gill rolling through “Mystery Train” with guitarists James Burton and Albert Lee, Clapton boogying with Jeff Beck on “Shake Your Money Maker,” and Clapton, Robert Cray and Jimmie Vaughan joining B.B. King on “The Thrill Is Gone.” Actually, the thrills happen over and over on this DVD. — Rating: ****

Sass says the beauty of giving an instructional makeup session is that a guest’s goals can be analyzed and broken down into clear, realistic steps for daily facial routines.

“Women’s skin is constantly changing, and your face changes when your skin changes, therefore regular skin assessments are a good idea,” she says. “There are a lot of skin and makeup tricks that they won’t tell you at the Estee Lauder counter, and I want to share those

“These classes are a great gift for a friend, wife or girlfriend — it’s an educational pampering session,” Riley says.

For instance, her recent holiday gift-making class was a medley of lip balm, scrub and chocolate. The homemade scrub is made out of sugar, herbs, mint and salt.

“Participants make all the gifts by hand and package them in recyclable material — everything gets placed in glass containers that can be used again and again,” Riley says. “We use wood shavings from a local artist in our gift boxes for decorative ornamentation.”

Riley, who taught spa and yoga classes in San Francisco, says she hopes to bring similar techniques and ideas to her business in Colorado.

“The spa, yoga and holiday giftmaking classes are cool gifts because there are different theme options with custom elements for each guest,” she says.

Holiday recipes from Boulder’s Basta

hen you have a background that includes cooking at Michelinstarred restaurants in Southern California and extensive professional experience in Italy, you might make for an intimidating holiday dinner guest.

Such is the experience of Chef Kelly Whitaker. His restaurant, Boulder’s Pizzeria Basta, has earned a reputation as the place to go among local foodies craving wood-fired pizza. These pies feature such specialty ingredients as heirloom prosciutto, San Marzano tomatoes and house-cured pancetta.

But Basta’s appeal also goes beyond authentically styled pies. The menu also features charcuterie favorites such as artisan speck and fennel salami as well as house-made ricotta cheese. A house specialty is the beef short rib prepared using the sous vide method of slow 72-hour water bath cooking. This technique makes for a far more moist and flavorful dish. Additionally, Basta offers occasional special menus. For example, a recent beer dinner featured Victory Brewing drafts paired with such dishes as duck rillette with roasted pear and chestnut and an elk salad consisting of cranberry-orange marmalade and arugula.

Given this high level of culinary sophistication, it’s unsurprising that when Whitaker receives invitations to seasonal soirees, it’s under the condition that he doesn’t need to cook anything. Graciously, he explains, “I happily accept but insist on bringing a side dish.”

Despite the simplicity of these dishes, they have passed seasonal muster at Basta. He explains, “My ‘go-tos,’ which have both made it on to Basta’s menu in some way or another this time of year, are roasted root vegetables with herbs and smoked mashed potatoes.

Roasted Root Vegetable with Herbs 3 tbsp. butter 1 pound fingerling potatoes, unpeeled, scrubbed, cut into 1-inch pieces 1 pound celery root, peeled, cut into 1-inch pieces 1 pound carrots, peeled, cut into 1-inch pieces 1 pound parsnips, peeled, cut into 1-inch

pieces 2 leeks (white and pale green parts only), cut into ½-inch thick pieces 2 tablespoons chopped fresh flat leaf parsley, celery leaves, chives 1/2 cup olive oil 10 garlic cloves, peeled Position one rack in center of oven and preheat to 375 F. Add butter to a heavy pan. Add all ingredients except garlic and herbs in very large bowl; toss to coat with olive oil, reserving some for finishing the dish. Season generously with salt and pepper. Roast 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add garlic cloves to the pan. Continue to roast until all vegetables are tender and brown in spots, stirring and turning vegetables occasionally, about 45 minutes longer. In the end, add the herbs and remaining olive oil and finish seasoning if needed.

Smoked Mashed Potato 4 lbs. Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cut in quarters 1 cup milk and 1 cup cream, warmed together ½ lb. room-temperature butter Salt and pepper Add the potatoes to cold water and bring to a simmer. Once the potatoes are cooked, transfer them to a tabletop or outdoor smoker (McGuckin Hardware in Boulder has a great one with wood chips). Smoke for eight minutes or until they have turned brown. After the potatoes are smoked, work the milk/cream mixture in with the butter. Season to taste.

But the useful ones, like cards for iTunes and Starbucks, tend to get spent before they can be lost or forgotten. Who wouldn’t like some more music or a good cup of coffee? They’re available in the check-out line of almost any supermarket, and you can bulk up the gift’s size by wrapping it with some candy, conveniently stocked adjacently on the shelf.Voila! It’s a Christmas Eve miracle for the procrastinating shopper.

And remember, always buy the best thing you can within your particular price range. Cheap becomes trash, but the nicer stuff always sticks around. Don’t buy someone a mediocre pair of shoes, for example — buy really nice socks (another great stocking stuffer.) Good luck!

n the face of opportunities to over-commit and overindulge, staying healthy through the holidays — physically and mentally — means following some rules, and bending others.

“Whenever things get busy, you have to remember to take care of yourself, because then you’ll have more to give,” says Traci Brown, who has more than a decade of experience working as a motivational speaker and, as she says, personal trainer for the mind.

Keep making time for whatever recharges your batteries — working out, cooking a meal a certain way, whatever it is that turns your light on a little brighter, she says.

Manage your crowded schedule prudently, and attend the parties and events you really want to go to.

If there’s something like a work party you really do have to attend, minimize your time there and, Brown says, decide to have fun, perhaps by mixing up the small talk.

“Open up a different conversation so you can talk about something you want to talk about,” Brown says. “Everybody is there and thinking they need to be there for one reason or another, so go and have a good

time with that.”

Asking what people do for a living at a work party clearly isn’t going to spark the most interesting conversations.

“Find one question that anyone would be intrigued to answer,” she says. “What’s your favorite hobby? What was your last trip? How do you spend your time outside work?”

And just because your parents sent out 50 Christmas cards every year doesn’t mean you have to.

“A lot of people are sending Valentine’s cards now or New Year’s cards,” Brown says.

“Create what works for you instead of what you think you have to do.”

Plenty of those time commitments are for get-togethers that involve filling a plate with delicious diet-crushers. It’s easy to get stressed out about the skyrocketing caloric intake, and nutritionists encourage monitoring the portions — but not making yourself miserable worrying about it.

“What’s really important is not so much what you eat from Thanksgiving to New Year’s. It’s what you eat from New Year’s to Thanksgiving,” says Eileen Faughey, founder of Nutrition Connections and a nutrition consultant for 17 years. The

“Take less of things you can have any time of the year and focus on what you only get this time of year,” Faughey says. “There are a lot of special foods, and you can enjoy them in small amounts.”

Some traditional foods actually are healthy, like potatoes, pumpkins, cranberries and white-meat turkey. So Faughey says to watch proportions, taking smaller amounts of richer foods — the pastries, cookies and cakes.

“Look at portion size. Really, anything in moderation is going to be OK,” says Jane Reagan, a registered dietician who works with Essential Nutrition and has counseled people with eating disorders.

“Be mindful of what you’re eating,” Reagan says. “Listen to your hunger cues and know when you’ve had enough.”

Keeping healthy snacks on hand will prevent you from arriving at a party that has a lot of high-calorie hazards so hungry you eat everything in sight, and drinking water can help cut back on cravings as well.

Other than that, Reagan says, “Stay active through the holidays.

Anything to get out with family, friends, kids, or get out and get fresh air — those are all great choices.”

And if you overindulge, she says, “Tomorrow is a new day. You can always get up after the holidays are over and start eating in a way that’s going to support the health you want.”

All pampering aside, another great option is to give the gift of learning, whether it’s classes for yoga, art, dance, cooking — or gyrotonics, which is growing in popularity. Gyrotonic Boulder offers group sessions in this system of circular movements that blends Tai Chi, dance, swimming and gymnastics, according to Georginne Bakalis, a certified gyrotonic and gyrokenesis instructor.

She says the rhythmic motions, which are accompanied by specific breathing patterns, can be tailored to be either low- or high-impact. If the group thing (gyrokenesis) sounds too social, there are also special machines that let you exercise solo (gyrotonics).

“There is resistance, but not like a Bowflex,” Bakalis says of the gyrotonic machines. “It’s just enough resistance to make you feel like you’re moving through water.”

Gyrotonic Boulder is offering a two-pack introductory package: two one-hour private sessions with an instructor for $80. After you’ve got the hang of it, classes are $100 for four, $160 for eight and $180 for 12.

Jackie Hueftle of The Spot recommends giving the gift of climb.

And you don’t have to take a class to use the climbing gym — day passes, or punches, are $15 each, $129 for 10, and, during the holiday season, $65 for five.

In addition to the indoor classes and open climbing, The Spot has a full-service outdoor guiding

service, and the half-day, per-person rate is $150, although that rate drops for groups.

For newbies or novices, Hueftle recommends the “Basic Bouldering Class,” which is $129 for a month-long membership and three days of class, equipment included. There are similar offerings for kids.

But if you are looking for something that is truly guaranteed to pump the adrenaline and provide an unforgettable rush, the destination for a variety of extreme escapes is right here in Boulder: Cloud 9 Living.

Co-owner John Augst and his former business partner modeled the company after similar operations in Europe and Australia. But it’s not just for rich people.

While there are tame experiences like restaurant tours and spa treatments, what sets Cloud 9 apart are the more extreme adventures. One of the most popular is stock-car driving, which Augst says he tried for the first time last summer. You can ride in the passenger seat or drive the car yourself, hurtling along at speeds of 150 miles per hour.

Or, for $1,395, you could choose to be a fighter pilot for a day. Augst says you go up in the plane with a real pilot, but the pilot gives you the stick as you simulate air-to-air combat.

ith the holidays approaching and temperatures dropping, Arlene Veblen stocks shorter Robusto cigars in the fragrant humidor room at Eads Smoke Shop, shifting the inventory to accommodate the winter smoker.

“People can go out on their patios and can smoke these in about 35 minutes,” she says.

The stubby cigars, which run between $3 and $15, are popular holiday sellers and make appropriate gifts for those smoking friends of yours. Simply wrapping a pack of cigarettes with ribbon and a bow, on the other hand, does not.

The best presents have that practical quality but go beyond necessity, and the folks at Eads have a variety of gifts that fit the bill.

Regal lighters, which come nestled in black jewelry boxes lined with white fabric, could help spark some holiday cheer, as would any one of a wide selection of Zippos, cigar humidors or cigarette cases. Don’t forget to check out the glass case of inexpensive pocket ashtrays, mini corncob pipes, smokeable keychains and other pint-sized accessories, any of which would make great stocking stuffers.

For the gadget lover and discreet smoker, there are also now e-cigarettes — smokeless, batterypowered vaporizers, shaped like traditional cigarettes, that use a vaporized solution to deliver that nicotine fix. But Veblen warns that these gizmos are somewhat of a white elephant due to the high cost of refilling cartridges, flaws in some of their construction, and the difficulty of finding parts to fit each particular brand.

“It’s just not worth the effort,” says Veblen, who stopped stocking e-cigarettes after running into diffi-

Sometimes sticking with tradition can offer a classier touch.

Johnny’s Cigar Bar, located on 13th Street in downtown Boulder, thrives in the antiquated custom of taking after-hour cigar breaks on soft leather chairs, drinking martinis while listening to the occasional live band. The smoking room — one of the few remaining indoor smoking areas in Boulder — offers a warm, unique place to relax with friends. Owner John Welsh suggests gift certificates to experience the bar’s ambience, although he also offers an array of cigars ranging in price from $3 to $25, which he says sell well during the holidays.

“People don’t know what else to give, and they know that cigars are something someone would enjoy,” Welsh explains. “They’re classic.”

Less traditional but gaining popularity — particularly among college students — are hookahs, which can range in price from $30 to more than $100. Several head shops on University Hill and around Boulder sell the large Eastern water pipes that are ultimately designed to be shared with others.

“It’s definitely a social thing,” says Nick Stainkamp, who works at The Fitter on The Hill. “You see hookahs everywhere, especially in a college town. Hookah is a big market.”

Though tobacco has its wellknown dangers, avoid the preachy presents. Don’t gift-wrap Nicorette and teeth-whitening strips, or selfhelp books outlining how to quit smoking. Sure, you can argue that “a clean bill of health” is the best gift of all, but that undermines the indulgent and festive spirit of the season. Save those habit-breaking nudges for New Year’s.

Instead of another necktie or picture frame, check out these unique ideas.

1. Gifts that keep growing: Between the cutting, the hauling, the setting up and the sap cleanup, giving a tree could eat up a whole afternoon. Brews on: Anyone who had one of those grow-your-own crystals, a fascination with high school chemistry, or just an interest in cutting down the annual bar tab, could take an interest in a homebrew kit. Making your own beer is generally less dangerous than it sounds, though more timeconsuming than you’d like it to be.

Starter homebrew kits, which can include a handbook, fermenting buckets, thermometer, bottle filler, rack and fill kit, hydrometer, capper, bottle brush, airlock and sanitizer, sell online for about $70.

Stuff people would be unlikely to already have, but it’s possible they’d enjoy using — designer picture frames, candleholders, deluxe wine openers, magazine baskets.

8. Holi-DIYs: I don’t happen to have a lot of spare time, but I

These mantra beads (technically called japa mala, but also known as prayer beads or worry beads) float around many a yoga studio or even jewelry shops, certainly the Asian-influenced gift shops. Strings of 108 beads, they’re designed for use in meditation and mantra recitation, typically of the kind of Sanskrit phrases that lead to eventual enlightenment. And really, whether you’re lighting up a Menorah or a Christmas tree, isn’t enlightenment what we’re all after? The beads, often made from wood or seeds, are pretty in their own right. Just like anything else you’d like to learn these days, YouTube videos can show you how to use them.

10. Keys to the kingdom: Type-A traveler types often have almost as much fun planning the trip as actually going on it. Give them all the tools they’ll need to plot their next great adventure by pairing up the gift of a map and a guidebook for an area you know is on their bucketlist. You could even dip into the office supplies and add sticky notes, highlighters and, if the map is laminated, laminate markers to chart their course.

Then perhaps add a homemade bookmark that includes a photo of friends or family as a reminder of all they’ll have to come back to.
