Danish’s latest rant

(Re: “Is Nablus Boulder’s sister?”

Danish Plan, Dec. 15.) Oh yes, another rant from Paul Danish. This time about the proposed Boulder sister city relationship with Nablus, Palestine. His misinformed characterizations only help to fuel mistrust between the two peoples who live in Israel and Palestine.

The sister city project is an attempt to further people-to-people relationships. Mr. Danish should understand that it is a citizen initiative that does not ask for Boulder funding.

It is a way to exchange greetings, further understanding and say we care.

Dan C. Winters/Boulder In reading Paul Danish’s article, “Is Nablus Boulder’s sister?” I was struck by the contempt Danish holds for Palestinians and for the suffering they have endured under a brutal occupation.

By selectively choosing the most shameful of incidents and painting Palestinian society as completely colored by the horrors of those incidents he shows his own bigotry and lack of humanity.

I would bet that Danish “ululates” with delight every time he hears of the killing of Palestinians and other Arabs

by Israeli soldiers and police. And I am sure that when babies are incinerated and decapitated, as happened in Gaza, the only sounds that come out of his mouth are justifications and excuses for his side’s actions. Obviously this man has

never had the common human decency to objectively study the actual history of Israel/Palestine and the Middle East. It is so much easier for him to take the low road of clinging to stories that make him feel good about the hatred he sees coming from others, not having even a hint of awareness that it is his own hatred that insures the continuation of the unnecessary suffering of others whose lives are totally irrelevant to him.

Had the writer of the piece ever been to Nablus, his article would not be so full of angst and anger. I have been to Nablus, so I know the people there are wonderfully generous, kind and welcoming. As folks in Boulder move forward with their preparations, maybe even the writer will discover there’s nothing “weird” about Boulder and Nablus

arvey and I were just tucking into a new batch of Alice B. Toklas fudge when there was a knock on the door.

It was Richard Nixon.

“Come in and grab some fudge and an eggnog,” I said.

“Well, this is a pleasant surprise,” I added, as he sank heavily into a bean bag chair. “I thought you would be spending the holidays in Purgatory again, and I don’t mean the ski area.”

“The Republican race in Iowa got so hot that they ran out of volunteers,” he said. “So I got a work-release gig canvassing precincts in Keokuk.”

“Who are you canvassing for?” I

asked.

“I got assigned to the Huntsman campaign,” he said.

“Wow, that’s harsh,” I said.

“Canvassing for Huntsman beats talking to yourself,” he shot back, “even though it involves less human contact.”

I didn’t say anything.

“Anyway, I wanted to drop by and congratulate you for becoming a Republican,” he said. “But I’m curious.

What prompted a life-long Democrat like you to change your registration?”

eware government bureaucrats who want to make rules to protect your safety.

Far too often their goal is something far more insidi-

ous.

City Manager Jane Brautigam has proposed a new rule that would close city parks and open space from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. — or at any time the city manager declares an “emergency closure.” A hearing on the matter is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Jan. 3 in the city council chambers.

The 11 p.m. to 5 p.m. closure rule would not apply to people hiking or walking on trails and sidewalks, only ban sitting or standing still in cityowned parks and open space. (It is already illegal to sleep, aka lie down, in public in the city of Boulder, a rule that targets the homeless.)

Though the new closure rule ostensibly is intended to preserve public health and safety, the full text of the rule makes it very clear that it is also intended as a means for city officials to put an end to activities they find inconvenient and irritating. They can’t come out and say that, of course, so here’s how they phrase it: “This rule is for the … prohibition of conduct that may reasonably be expected to interfere substantially with the use and enjoyment of parks, parkways, recreation ways and open space by the general public or that constitutes a nuisance … ” The document, provided for viewing on the city’s website, goes on to say, “This rule is also intended to address the potential myriad of negative impacts to public property, including and not limited to, sanitation, safety, security, and the preservation of public property that results from around-theclock use of public property.” (For the full text of the proposed rule, go to www.bouldercolorado.gov.)

Brautigam and other city officials are trying to pass the proposed rule off as a well-intentioned effort to protect public safety and sanitation. They say it has nothing to do with the Occupy Boulder movement, some members of which are currently occupying the lawn of the municipal building.

Do they think anyone really buys that? Are we supposed to believe that city bureaucrats came up with this new rule randomly? If so, the conversation

must have gone something like this: “Have you ever seen people sitting or standing in a public park between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. — not counting the activists who’ve been hanging out for almost three months — and wondered whether the public safety, health, property, vegetation, wildlife, signs, markers, buildings or other structures of our public parks were at risk?”

“Now that you randomly mention it, yes, I have — not thinking, of course, of the activists encamped outside our door.”

“Clearly, then, this is a pressing issue. We must act immediately!”

The proposed rule seems very clearly to target Occupy Boulder and any future movements like it, as well as potentially creating another host of legal hassles for our city’s homeless population. Now, it’s not just the homeless caught “camping” in public who can be ticketed, but also those who are caught sitting or standing after 11 p.m.

The city has assured us that this new rule would not unreasonably curtail free speech. After all, 18 out of every 24 hours would be available for speaking truth to power. Well, that’s all fine and good, but it doesn’t take into account the “emergency closure” clause of the rule, which would permit the city to shut city-owned parks and open space at any time. Nor does it fully satisfy the “free” aspect of “free speech.”

Since 9/11, we’ve seen an increasing government impulse to cordon off free speech. Citizens who wished to tell George W. what they thought of his war in Iraq were relegated to freespeech zones far from his view — a clear diminishment of the constitutionally protected right to the redress of wrongs. Now the city of Boulder is trying to tell us what time of day we can seek redress of grievances and speak our minds.

What is free about that? More importantly, what is Boulder about that? Brautigam and city staff may be talking about public safety and sanitation, but what they’re seeking is control.

tion,” I said. “I changed my registration to independent back then. This year, I wanted to support Gingrich, so I changed my registration to ‘R’ so that I could caucus with the Republicans.”

“I figured you would be a Gingrich supporter,” he said. “It was obvious.”

“How so?” I asked.

“Well for openers, a hopeless political romantic like you would be instantly seduced by Newt’s history thing,” he said.

“Busted,” I thought.

“Well, I think it’s a big plus to have a president who has studied American his-

tory and draws sustenance and guidance from it,” I said. “The present incumbent doesn’t seem to have much interest in history, and it shows.”

He nodded in agreement.

“More important, you’re attracted to Gingrich because he’s running for office essentially the same way you used to do it,” he said. “Before you ever announced you were running you used to get a yellow pad and draw a vertical line down the middle of it. On the left hand side you would make a list of the major issues in the campaign. On the right you would make a parallel list of what you

would do about each of them. Then you would tear the sheet in half along the line and toss the list on the left. The list on the right, the solutions, became your platform.”

“That’s the way I used to do it,” I agreed.

“And that’s basically the way Gingrich is doing it,” he went on. “He’s spent years defining problems and crafting proposals to solve them.”

“It’s a powerful way to campaign,” he said. “You define yourself in terms of your solutions. That makes it much harder for your opponents to define you.

And if you have a list of plausible solutions and your opponent doesn’t, there’s a good chance your list will define the terms of the debate in your race, which gives you a huge leg up.”

“Even if people disagree with some of your solutions, you’ll get some respect and support just for telling people where you stand,” he said. “Some of them will vote for you even though they disagree with you on a lot of stuff.”

“You’re right,” I said. “I used to hear that a lot.”

“Of course, running on solutions can be a two-edged sword — and a serrated one at that — especially if you have to run in a primary,” he continued.

“Original and creative solutions can get you noticed and attract passionate supporters, but they can also give you a reputation as a maverick, or worse as a heretic, in the eyes of your party’s more ideologically orthodox members. It allows your opponent to attack you for being erratic or inconsistent or a hypocrite or zany — which is what’s happening to Gingrich in Iowa.”

“Tell me about it,” I said. “Newt’s getting hit with a $10 million shit storm of negative ads in Iowa. If last week’s polls are accurate, he’s lost between a third and half of his support in less than a month. Can he come back?”

“Sure, he can, especially this year,” Nixon said. “But he can’t if he doesn’t counter-attack hard, which he should have done immediately.

“Trust me on this,” he said without a trace of irony. “When it comes to negative campaigning, I’ve had a lot of hands-on experience. The first rule of negative campaigning is this: Unanswered charges stick, no matter how ludicrous they are and no matter how well defined you are. I’m surprised a politician as experienced as Newt has been so derelict in defending himself.”

“So does this mean you think Romney will be the stronger candidate?”

I asked.

Nixon nearly choked on his eggnog.

“You’ve got to be kidding,” he said.

“Romney inspires minimum passion and instant distrust — especially among conservatives. And conservatives make up 40 percent of the American electorate.

Newt could crater spectacularly or, against all odds, he could pull off a transformative victory — like Reagan.

He could change the trajectory of an election. I don’t think Romney can do that.”

Just then his pager went off. Nixon glanced at it and reached for his coat.

“That was the National Reconnaissance Office,” he said. “One of its drones just detected an undecided voter in Keokuk. Gotta run.”

Personhood is in the code (Re: “‘We the People,’ not ‘We the Corporations’” The Highroad, Dec. 1.)

Jim Hightower starts out his lament of corporate personhood thus: “In response to the Supreme Court’s freakish decision in 2010 to bestow political ‘personhood’ on corporations ... “ The decision was not “freakish”, it was absolutely correct pursuant to the law.

“What law?” you may ask. Try Title 1, Chapter 1, §1, paragraph 1 of the United States Code (USC) which states: “§ 1. Words denoting number, gender, and so forth In determining the meaning of any Act of Congress, unless the context indicates otherwise … the words ‘person’ and ‘whoever’ include corporations, companies, associations, firms, partnerships, societies, and joint stock companies, as well as individuals …” (emphasis added) Even the most cursory investigation

by Mr. Hightower would have determined that the very first paragraph, of the very first section, of the very first chapter, of the very first title, of the United States Code defines corporations as persons. It is not like that fact is buried deep in the bowels of the text of the Code.

The “personhood” decision did not bestow anything upon corporations that the USC did not already ascertain by definition. The Supreme Court decision was correct and appropriate, pursuant to the law, even if it was not correct and appropriate for the political bent of persons such as Mr. Hightower.

It is best for one to know that upon which one speaks before one mounts the soapbox.

Though OWS has yet to create much in the way of new policies or political change, it has succeeded in launching a national conversation about the nation’s rapidly growing income inequality.

BW: Left-wing leaders have laid the groundwork for the movement by bringing to the fore key issues, such as the dire effects of corporate influence over our political system.

How do you view their role in OWS? KL: Just about every political leader from the left, from Slavoj Zizek to Michael Moore to economists like Joseph Stiglitz, has been to an Occupation and given a rousing speech. So in a way, they have been leaders. One of the great things about this movement is that the protesters got the aesthetics right. They may not have the policy side of it right yet, but in terms of form, they got it perfect. Part of the aesthetic is that these lefty luminaries elevated the way the protesters thought about their movement. Imagine how you’d feel sleeping in the park and a luminary comes down and says what you are doing is magnificent.

There is an emotional and aesthetic leadership when these lefty luminaries do that BW: Does OWS represent a significant resurgence of the Left?

KL: The wonderful thing about the left is that even though we’ve been disillusioned and almost totally ineffective since 1989, we have had a lot of fantastic ideas. Whether it’s precautionary principles or a Robin Hood tax or reinstating Glass-Steagall or banning highfrequency flash trading. Or deeper philosophical ideas about making the public airwaves truly public again and new information delivery systems like Democracy Now! to supplant the CNNs of the world. The left is brimming with fantastic ideas. With this movement, we have finally mustered the passion to create a blueprint for a Boulder Weekly

different kind of future. The new guys are jumping over the dead body of the Old Left and doing something unexpected and exciting.

BW: Tell me about the origin of Adbusters and its relevance to the anticorporate ideology of Occupy.

KL: Adbusters started after we created a TV spot and weren’t able to buy time for it. In 1989, the forest industry in the Pacific Northwest launched a multi-million dollar PR campaign and their ads were everywhere — on TV, at bus stops, full pages in the newspapers.

They ran a TV commercial that said, “Hey you Canadians, we’re doing a fantastic job managing your forests. We have forests forever.” I was part of a group of environmental filmmakers and we knew that was a lie; they were clear-cutting our old-growth forests. So we came up with our own TV spot.

But when we approached the same stations that ran the industry ads, we were told no. It was an incredible moment of truth to realize there was no democracy on the airwaves. We saw how an industry with big bucks could air ads telling people whatever they wanted, but a small group with a dissenting viewpoint couldn’t buy time. It angered us to the point that we launched Adbusters and everything we’ve done since.

Eventually, we morphed from attacking the lack of democracy on the airwaves to becoming a radical critique of consumer culture.

BW: You encountered the same problem trying to buy airtime in America. The only station that would sell it to you was CNN. KL: Yes, but even they refused for many years until I threatened them. In fact, they were the only TV network in the whole world to finally sell us time. I think Ted Turner had something to do with that because he was a pretty decent guy. But the interesting point is that this movement is not just about economics, it’s also about the media. It’s about the food that we eat. It’s about the way that we get our information.

We’re tired of getting our information from CNN, our economy from Wall Street, our food from McDonald’s and our drink from Coca-Cola. We want a different future all across the board. A revolution of everyday life is what we’re after.

BW: The movement seeks reform of corporations and Wall Street. But there is a communal nature to the occupations.

KL: When I was a university student I felt there was something very fantastic and inspiring about this idea of aspiring toward a communal future. I notice now, and what we talk about in Adbusters, is that some of the ideals of communism are finding their way back.

BW: Is there a precedent for OWS — for this kind of global movement where so many protesters in different countries have similar grievances?

KL: In 1968 a movement started in Paris’ Latin Quarter that was sparked by the Situationists. Hundreds of campuses exploded and cities everywhere had dramatic protests. It looked like it was going to be the first global revolution, but it fizzled out. There was no climate change or Internet then, of course, and the world was still a pretty benign place. The Modernist ethic and aesthetic was roaring along, and there

alistic and truthful about communal ways of thinking. These young people are seeing beyond the bad rap that these ways of thinking have had for the past several generations.

BW: The media has been very dismissive of you and Adbusters. I watched an old CNN interview with you and the host ridiculed your idea for a Buy Nothing Day. KL: The commercial mass media is, in many ways, the propaganda arm of capitalism. With [Occupy Wall Street], the mass media knows that eventually they are going to be one of our targets.

They felt they were being forced by the existing power structures to knuckle under to a predetermined lifestyle. The young people then just wanted to live in a better world. Forty years later, history is repeating itself, but the stakes are much higher. We live in a much more apocalyptic environment. This could be the beginning of a second great mindshift, possibly a global revolution.

Alexander lauded for making a difference for county’s needy by Jefferson Dodge

rank Alexander started helping the needy in high school, volunteering for Habitat for Humanity and food pantries in tiny Hopewell, N.J. The Manhattan native continued serving others in college, working for Upward Bound’s camps for lowincome youth and tutoring at-risk students in elementary and middle schools.

Now, decades later, he’s still helping the less fortunate, just on a much larger scale. Alexander is Boulder County’s director of housing and human services, and he’s Boulder Weekly’s Person of the Year because he has been responsible for leading a remarkable transformation in how the county helps its needy.

While he is quick to give credit to his staff, nonprofits and the community, others point to Alexander as the main reason for the improvements.

In a nutshell, during a time of economic downturn, his division is handling an increased caseload and has endured a profound reorganization, and yet is providing people basic needs like food and shelter more effectively — and doing it for less money.

Alexander is credited with successfully merging the county’s housing and human services department, weathering a major budget cut, proposing a successful temporary tax increase to offset cuts and caseload increases, and spearheading a philosophical shift in how the county delivers service to individuals, families and children.

The model Alexander has adopted, which actually requires less funding, is being copied around the state and nation. **** Alexander lived in Philadelphia in the early 1990s, when there was rash of deaths among the homeless population due to exposure to extremely cold weather.

He worked for a “code blue” program designed to prevent those deaths. Then, in 1996, he took a job as manager of a homeless family shelter and food bank for Bucks County. Alexander moved to Colorado in 1998 to become elder rights coordinator in Boulder County’s aging services department, serving as ombuds for long-term care and Medicare as well as running training programs on elderly abuse prevention. He was named Boulder County housing director in 2004.

Alexander says this breadth of experience with a variety of populations taught him something.

“People who need assistance want the same things,” he says.

Experts agree they generally want just enough help to get back on their feet and take care of themselves, they don’t want their kids removed from the home, they don’t want to be institutionalized, they want to stay in their community, and they want the least intrusive form of assistance possible.

“Those happen to be the lowest-cost interventions and have the most likelihood of success,” Alexander says.

And oftentimes people who need food stamps also need housing assistance, and they may also have children suffering from neglect, malnutrition or other issues. But most county governments have separate departments for housing and social services.

That was true for Boulder County until early 2009, when Alexander was chosen to lead an integrated division that placed all housing and human services under one roof. The county commissioners made the move not necessarily to save money, but to recognize that the two divisions were regularly serving the same population and should work more closely to do so. Those involved acknowledge that the merger was painful at times. But there was more pain to come.

On top of managing the consolidation of the two departments, in late 2009, Alexander learned that his budget was getting slashed by $5.7 million, thanks to a combination of caseload increases, state (and, to a lesser extent, federal) budget cuts and legislative changes.

(SB 177, passed in 2008, restricted counties’ Temporary Assistance for Needy Families funding.)

So the wilted economy was driving up the number of needy families and boosting demand for the county’s services, just as the amount of money Alexander’s division had on hand to meet that demand was getting siphoned off. It was the perfect storm.

But as it turns out, the newly merged division, and an innovative approach to delivering services, allowed housing and human services to thrive. **** It was not without bloodshed. The budget cuts led to the loss of 25 positions in human services, although only 1.5 of those were layoffs — the rest were achieved through severance packages or voluntary retirements.

The department was forced to close its Louisville office, saving about $300,000 a year. County child care services stopped accepting new clients and tightened its eligibility requirements.

“Change is difficult,” Alexander says. “But a crisis is certainly an opportunity. You can either get hit by the crisis and crumble or shrink, or you can take the crisis and turn it into change.”

The new approach to service delivery that he spearheaded actually ended up saving the division money. The model involves early intervention and prevention. For example, getting to people who are about to lose their housing and giving them temporary rental funding or helping them avoid foreclosure is more effective — and cheaper — than trying to help someone gain housing after they have already become homeless. It’s being more proactive than the traditional model of just serving as a safety net, catching people’s heads just before they hit the pavement.

“It’s costing society an enormous amount of money to have people homeless,” Alexander says. “Instead of being an emergency back-end system, we want to encourage people to get the right amount of help at the right time. And the earlier we can get involved in people’s lives, the less it costs.”

As part of the merger — and to be more effective in getting people the help they need — under Alexander’s tenure Boulder County Housing and Human Services cross-trained its own staff in the hopes that any employee could help any client, instead of shuffling the client to another department to fill out more paperwork. The effort has successfully eliminated departmental “silos” and reduced bureaucracy.

“Without the merger, I don’t think we would have been able to serve as many people, nor in such an agile and comprehensive way,” he says.

Jennifer Eads, the county’s self-sufficiency and community support director, says the transition has not just resulted in fewer forms and hands involved in the process, it has prompted a change in language. To destigmatize terms like “welfare” and “food stamps,” those items are now called “financial assistance” and “grocery assistance,” she says. “It’s night and day from what it was three years ago.” **** The division has also improved its relationships with — and provided funding to — community partners like the Sister Carmen Community Center in Lafayette, the OUR Center in Longmont, the Emergency Family Assistance Association (EFAA) and local schools.

It’s all part of an initiative known as “Any door is the right door,” which is intended to get clients the resources they need, regardless of whether they show up at a community organization, a school or the HHS office.

“I’d say one of his biggest accomplishments, especially in the last two years, is he has driven his staff to form really strong partnerships with community-based organizations,” says Suzanne Crawford, CEO of Sister Carmen. “He’s really led in that regard. We’re doing a lot of excellent work together.”

She points to a rent assistance program the county funded about two years ago that allows Sister Carmen to continue serving in the role of case manager while providing clients up to six months of paid expenses to stabilize themselves.

“It kept a lot of people off the street or from living in their car,” Crawford says.

Terry Benjamin, EFAA executive director, says one outcome of the strong partnerships with community groups is that virtually anyone in the support network who is first to contact Susan France needy individuals can help assess what they are eligible for, whether from the county or a local nonprofit.

(Community partners have been trained in the county’s online benefits management system.) If the individual qualifies for county support in the form of food stamps, for instance, EFAA may conserve its food supplies for those who aren’t eligible for that, to reach as many people as possible.

Nonprofits then take overflow in situations where the county can’t help.

“It lets us maximize our collective impact,” Benjamin says of the collaboration, adding that nonprofits want to maintain their independence even when they receive county funding, and Alexander has been respectful of that.

“There’s a dynamic tension in there that’s healthy as long as you’re respectful of shared goals and roles, and Frank works hard to do that,” Benjamin says, calling him “a really driving force.”

Many changes Alexander implemented were recommended by Casey Family Programs, a Seattle foundation dedicated to improving foster care and the child welfare system. For instance, Casey wants to keep more at-risk kids in their own homes, and aims to reduce out-of-home placement by 50 percent nationally before 2020. Boulder County has already reduced out-of-home placement by 40 percent.

Thanks in no small part to Alexander, Casey is now working with state officials to spread the model to 13 other Colorado counties.

Alexander is also credited with spearheading the successful county ballot measure 1A in 2010, which raises $5.4 million annually through a property tax increase that expires after five years. The money goes to backfilling human services areas that have been cut or have seen caseload increases, and several local nonprofits have benefitted from the funding as well. **** Alexander’s impact has not been limited to the county level. He serves as co-chair of the Colorado Department of Human Services Policy Advisory Committee, as well as president of the Colorado Human Services Directors Association. Through these statewide leadership roles, he is helping to spread Boulder County’s new model for service delivery.

According to Lloyd Malone, the state’s child wel-

fare director, not having integrated services like Boulder County can actually exacerbate problems instead of solving them.

He says families in need can “find themselves in a system that is very fragmented and has many doors, and all of them are difficult to get through, and there always seems to be a different process for a different door.

“Frank has been a great visionary about the blending of human services programs, where families should see a seamless system and a system that to them is integrated, even though the people behind the door are working hard to keep it that way,” Malone says. “Good systems are invisible to clients when they’re integrated properly.

I think Boulder County is probably the shining star in our state regarding that.”

He describes Alexander as an effective leader.

“He’s just a wonderful collaborator,” Malone explains. “He’s very respectful to other leaders.

He’s assertive, but also a partner in dealing with issues of mutual interest.

He’s able to communicate exceptionally well with other leaders. He’s very articulate and gentle, but clear in very powerful leadership messages about what the future should bring for our systems.

“He’s someone you listen to and say, ‘Yeah, I can get behind that.’”

On top of his professional achievements, those who work with him say Alexander is simply a good guy.

“He’s just a super-nice person,” Crawford says.

“He elicits input and thoughts from others in a very egalitarian way, so you always feel part of the process,” Malone says. “He’s smart and articulate, he knows his stuff, he works well with others and consequently, gets things done because of that.”

“It’s really an inspiring place to work, because he’s truthful and has integrity,” Eads says. “There’s absolutely no ego involved. … I don’t think I could do this job, in this economy, without someone as steadfast and strategic as Frank.”

Kit Thompson, the county’s family and children services director, calls him “an incredibly passionate human being,” adding that his management style is one of listening to his staff and delegating to people he trusts, “but he’s also willing to get down in the dirt if he needs to.”

When asked what gives him the most satisfaction in his job, Alexander pauses.

“The sense of community responsibility and working with the community partners we have,” he says.

“Working in a community where people believe fundamentally that if we can support people in hard times, we will all be better off.

“The economic downturn has taught us how much stronger we are together than we are apart.”

Hazel Jane Dickens (June 1, 1935 – April 22, 2011) was an American bluegrass singer, songwriter, double bassist and guitarist.

Her music was characterized not only by her high, lonesome singing style, but also by her provocative pro-union, feminist songs.

Noxolo Nogwaza (1987 – April 23, 2011) was a South African lesbian LGBT rights activist and organizer of the Ekurhuleni Pride Organising Committee. She was raped and murdered by assailants in KwaThema, Gauteng, in an incident which was branded a hate crime.

Yvette Iola Vickers (née Vedder) (Aug. 26, 1928 – circa 2010, Los Angeles) was an American actress, pinup model and singer. In 1958, she appeared in Attack of the 50 Foot Woman as Honey Parker.

The following year she played the role of Liz Walker in Attack of the Giant Leeches. In 1959, she appeared as the Playboy Playmate of the Month for the July issue. Vickers was found in her home roughly a year after her death.

Alfred Mordecai Freedman (Jan. 7, 1917 – April 17, 2011) was an American psychiatrist. A long-time educator and advocate of social justice, Freedman is known for leading the effort to have the American Psychiatric Association declassify homosexuality as a mental illness.

Wanda Bullard (April 24, 1948 – Sept.

19, 2011) was the inspiration for The Moth live storytelling events (and subsequent podcast). She was known for telling a story about her father liberating a prisoner on the faith that he would go fetch his bail money in his own previously impounded car — and the prisoner did.

Frank Woodruff Buckles (Feb. 1, 1901 – Feb. 27, 2011), born Wood Buckles, was the last surviving American veteran of World War I. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1917 and served with a detachment from Fort Riley, driving ambulances and motorcycles near the front lines in Europe.

Erhard Loretan (April 28, 1959 – April 28, 2011) was a Swiss mountain climber. Loretan was the third person to have climbed all 14 eightthousanders. He died on his 52nd birthday while climbing the Grünhorn in the Swiss Alps.

Eddie Kirkland (Aug. 16, 1923 – Feb. 27, 2011) was an American electric blues guitarist, harmonicist, singer and songwriter. Kirkland, known as the “Gypsy of the Blues” for his rigorous touring schedules, played and toured with John Lee Hooker from 1949 to 1962.

William Barnard “Bill” Justice (Feb. 9, 1914 – Feb. 10, 2011) was an animator and engineer for the Walt Disney Company. Justice joined Walt Disney Studios as an animator in 1937 and worked on such features as 1940’s Fantasia, 1944’s The Three Caballeros, 1951’s Alice in Wonderland, and 1953’s Peter Pan. He is arguably best known as the animator of the rabbit Thumper from 1942’s Bambi and the chipmunks Chip and Dale.

Chris Hondros (March 14, 1970 — April 20, 2011) was considered one of the most important conflict photographers in the world at the time of his death. He worked for Getty Images.

Hondros was fatally wounded in a mortar attack by government forces in Misrata while covering the 2011 Libyan civil war.

Photojournalist Tim Hetherington was also killed in the attack.

In 1972, Weinglass took on the defense of John Sinclair, chairman of the White Panther Party in Detroit. The case led to a landmark decision prohibiting the government’s use of electronic survelliance without a warrant.

David Victor Emmanuel (Feb. 10, 1963 – March 15, 2011), better known as Smiley Culture, was a British reggae singer and deejay known for his “fast chat” style.

During a relatively brief period of fame and success, he produced two of the most critically acclaimed reggae singles of the 1980s.

Kaikhosru Dadhaboy (K.D.) Sethna (Nov. 26, 1904 – June 29, 2011) was an Indian poet, scholar, writer, philosopher, and cultural critic. He published more than 40 books. He was also known as Amal Kiran.

Norma Duffield Stong “Duffy” Lyon (July 29, 1929 – June 26, 2011) was an American farmer and artist nicknamed The Butter Cow Lady. She was known for creating elaborate butter sculptures at the Iowa State Fair from 1960 until 2006, when she retired. She also created for celebrities and politicians.

George Charles Ballas (June 28, 1925 – June 25, 2011) was an American entrepreneur. He invented the first string trimmer, known as the Weed Eater, in 1971. He was the father of ballroom dancer Corky Ballas and grandfather of Mark Ballas of Dancing with the Stars.

Frederick Gilman Spencer III (Dec. 8, 1925 – June 24, 2011) was an American newspaper editor. He was editor at The Trentonian, Philadelphia Daily News from 1975 to 1984, New York Daily News from 1984 to 1989, and The Denver Post from 1989 to 1993.

Susan Elizabeth Rotolo (Nov. 20, 1943 – Feb. 25, 2011), known as Suze Rotolo, was an American artist, but is perhaps best known as Bob Dylan’s girlfriend between 1961 and 1964 and a strong influence on his music. She is the Boulder Weekly

Lars Sjösten (May 7, 1941 — October 2011) was a Swedish jazz pianist.

Elouise Pepion Cobell, Yellow Bird Woman (Nov. 5, 1945 – Oct. 16, 2011) was a Niitsítapi (Blackfoot Confederacy) elder and activist, banker, rancher, Native American leader, and lead plaintiff in the groundbreaking litigation Cobell v.

Salazar, which challenged the United States’ mismanagement of trust funds belonging to more than 500,000 individual Native Americans.

In 2010 the government approved a $3.4 billion settlement for the trust case. The major portion of the settlement is to be used to buy back lands and restore them to the Native American tribes.

Resolve to get involved with your local food supply. If you want to get hands on, plant a garden in your backyard or an herb garden and a pot of tomatoes in your apartment. Learn to grow sprouts in a jar. Celebrate the joy of fresh, home-grown food. Or, pick a local farmer to support by participating in a CSA (2012 shares are already on sale).

Build a community at that farm, build a relationship with those farmers, and bring home local produce week after week. You’ll have healthy food and spare the planet the carbon costs of having vegetables shipped from one continent to the next.

Resolve to avoid disposables. If you can remember your cell phone, you can remember your cloth grocery bags.

Pack a kit for yourself that includes a reusable coffee cup (paper cups are often made of virgin paper bleached in a process that releases toxic chemicals), a glass to-go container for your lunches and picking up leftovers at a restaurant, a reusable water bottle, a reusable bag and reusable utensils. recent feature story in The Atlantic took a funny and insightful look at Yonder Mountain String Band’s Harvest Music Festival, staged a couple of months ago in the Ozark National Forest in Arkansas. The piece was as much about the band-sponsored music festival phenomenon as it was about Yonder themselves (although the author was clearly a fan), and when we caught up to Jeff Austin and Dave Johnston last week, we asked them about the gig and whether it says something about what the 13-year-old progressive 18 December 29, 2011

aul Simon, Velvet Underground and Blind Willie McTell covers on the same album … you don’t hear that every day.

But then again, maybe you’re just not listening to enough G. Love, a guy who has managed to mash Bob Dylan, Delta blues and hip-hop throughout most of his career. He is nothing if not eclectic — and on his latest album, Fixin’ to Die, he’s still beguilingly surprising.

For this outing, the Philadelphiaborn artist, nee Garrett Dutton, decided to go back to his Jason Shea roots — far back, to the days before he began merging blues-folk with a little R&B and hip-hop to create a laid-back funksoul vibe. Even before he hooked up with his band, Special Sauce, or did his first recordings for the Okeh label or landed on pal Jack Johnson’s Brushfire Records. For his first album, billed only as G. Love, he invited Americana darlings the Avett Brothers to produce and perform; they bonded after meeting in Boston.

This time, Love also does several covers — the title tune is by Delta bluesman Bukka White; he also visits McTell’s “You’ve Got to Die.” More unexpected are his reimagined versions of Simon’s “50 Ways to Leave Your

The iconic latter tune is one of his favorites — it’s a go-to song, he says, “if I’m sittin’ around the campfire with my friends.”

The decision to do covers did not come without hesitation, Love admits; he says he cherishes the opportunity to get his compositions out to the world on his albums.

“It was a little bit of a mental challenge for me to make that step,” he adds, “but once I embraced it, it was a really rewarding thing to cut some of those tunes and put my own stamp on them.”

After he wrapped his head around the concept, doing Simon’s hit wasn’t such a leap.

“My manager was trying to get me to cover that in my live show for years,”

It went over so well onstage that by the time he got to the studio, he was excited about recording it. But they knew they didn’t want to mimic the famous Steve Gadd drumbeat, so they wound up stripping it out altogether and going for the claps and kick-drum beats they’d applied on “Fixin’ to Die.” Then they gave it an Avett bluegrass breakdown. The Avetts — brothers Scott (banjo, drums and vocals) and Seth (guitar, keyboards and vocals) and friend Bob Crawford (bass) — form the album’s musical nucleus with Love; Sauce drummer Jeff Clemons also contributes.

As for why Love decided to record without Special Sauce, he says, “We wanted to flip the script a little bit and just send me out with my guitar. We felt it could be interesting to go out with some different musicians, and those guys really fit the bill. And their harmonies are super-tight, so I knew all the vocals were gonna be amazing.

“I’ve had a lot of success when I’m doing collaborative efforts,” adds Love, who has worked with Johnson, Donavon Frankenreiter, Ben Harper, Thurs Dec 22 Marc Broussard, Blackalicious, Tristan 7:30-10pm Prettyman and Dr. John, among others.

“I think when musicians get together in a creative environment, nothing but exciting music is gonna happen.”

He also wanted a stripped-down, elemental sound.

“The most important thing was capturing the vibe,” he says.

They recorded in Asheville, N.C., the Avetts’ home state, where, Love says, music fills the streets and there’s lots of “art and creative juices flowin’ around.”

The studio, in an old church, provided even more inspiration.

“It’s a big, airy feeling and the light’s streaming through the stained glass,” he recalls. “When I walked in with my guitar I really got a sense that, man, something special’s gonna happen this week.

And it really did.”

They recorded the disc in only nine days. Ironically, the originals he included span more than 20 years. “Get Goin’” and “Walk On” were written when he was still a student at Germantown Friends School, a Quaker high school in Philly.

If the album has a theme, it might be the joys of love — including his woman (“Milk and Sugar”), his dog (“Katie Miss”) and his grandmother (“Ma Mere”). The latter two are long gone; there’s also a possibly unintended emphasis on death, with the title song and “You’ve Got to Die.” “Heaven,” however, is a love song.

And “Milk and Sugar,” for his fiancé, is about coffee and love. As G. Love fans know, he’s partial to songs about beverages.

“I always like to write about somethin’ that people can connect with,” Love says with a laugh.

So how does he take his coffee?

With milk and sugar, of course.

Now might be the time.

There’s a habit among Colorado skiers to think that their mountain is the center of the universe. And while Vail may be the “best place on the planet” and Arapahoe Basin is where “the true hardcores hang out,” there’s another option to consider. And that’s the fact that as rad as these places are, they really don’t stack up to a place called Europe.

It’s true that going skiing in Europe can be daunting. In addition to the language barrier, there’s the cost. There’s also the time-distance continuum to address. It’s obviously faster and easier to fly into Salt Lake than Zurich or to drive to Loveland than end up in Geneva.

But with heavy snow late in coming to our hometown mountains, and Europe getting a serious dose of white, now might be time to look into a round-trip plane ticket to Europe. And once you’re there, you might end up pleasantly surprised: The cost of skiing is generally cheaper, particularly at the less well-known resorts, than in North America.

And your accommodations will feed you breakfast and dinner along with giving you a bed, making Europe an amaz-

You’ve probably already read about Europe in your favorite ski or snowboard magazine. You’ve seen the pictures and you’ve watched the ski movies. But nothing, nothing, can prepare you for the actual experience. In European countries like Switzerland, France and Austria, they’ve put ski lifts at the end of almost every valley. You can jump on a lift in one valley, drop over to the other side into a different town, catch another lift or a bus or a train to another place, ski more stuff and then, hours later, end up where you first started.

It’s this access combined with a “ski where you want to at your own risk” philosophy that makes Europe the best place to go if you want to ride truly wild terrain. Everything is open and everything is accessible. And when you’re done with your day, you can sample historic villages where they’ve been skiing and getting crazy in the mountains for 500 years or longer.

which spans numerous peaks and valleys and which easily outclasses any mountain in North America when it comes to size, number of lifts and nightlife. And it’s worth experiencing one of these megaresorts (others include Austrian behemoth St. Anton and France’s Chamonix).

But you’ll spend more at these ski areas on everything from lift tickets to accommodations to après ski beers.

Because of this, it’s worth checking out Europe’s mid-sized ski areas. These offer incredible bang for the buck, with daily lift tickets in the $30-$40 range.

Geared toward families, they also have plenty of self-catering accommodations, which means that you can save on meals, too, but you’ll lose nothing when it comes to the terrain or backcountry access.

Good choices in this category include one of the best values in European skiing, Italy’s Monterosa Ski complex; the Swiss ski areas of Lenzerheide and Disentis and the Southern Alps resort of Vars, France.

Finally, there are the little guys: oneor two-lift resorts that are anchored by tiny villages. These mountains are usually good for those who don’t mind backcountry skiing, as in-bounds terrain can be limited. These resorts include Switzerland’s Champex Lac and Austria’s Krippenstein. Another one-lift wonder is France’s La Grave, where one main lift serves approximately 7,000 vertical feet of advanced and expert skiing.

So if you’re into powder and huge faces, couloirs and massive cliff drops, history and 500-year-old stone villages, you need to tweak your travel plans this season. Ajax and the Basin will still be here when you get back, but they won’t seem nearly as steep.

Resources + Strategies Europe ain’t cheap. But you can make it cheaper. Here’s how.

Watch your weight: With airlines charging extra for baggage, take one pair of skis. If you must take two, bring an unmounted pair so you can swap your bindings onto them. Or team up with a Boulder Weekly

buddy to bring one extra pair, or an extra snowboard and bindings divided between you. Be sure to weigh your luggage prior to showing up at the airport.

Bags are usually limited to 50 pounds each. Check the restrictions and use a bathroom scale so you don’t get stuck paying extra.

Become a van dweller: While it’s easy and fast to get around via trains and buses, rent a sport wagon with two other friends and bring winter sleeping bags to sleep in the back to defray lodging costs.

Hostel, baby, hostel: Switzerland has some of the nicest youth hostels in the world. In many, four people can get a private room together so you can spread out your gear and not live in a dorm.

Think small(er): Many of Europe’s mid-sized resorts are much, much bigger than anything in North America. These will have cheaper accommodations, lift tickets and less people. But the terrain can be just as intense as the larger mountains.

Buy a package: Packages are usually considered a pretty weak solution when it comes to traveling, but recent deals such as a seven-day package at Switzerland’s Arosa include accommodations, skiing and breakfast for $960. (www.myswitzerland.com) Pack a lunch: Speaking of free breakfasts, bring a supply of ziplock sandwich bags and stuff them full of sliced salami, cheese and bread from the breakfast buffet for an on-mountain picnic later.

Rent a condo: Get a place with a kitchen, fill it full of friends and cook your own meals.

Hike for a day: Many resorts sell single-ride lift tickets to the top of the mountain. Once you’re there, head off into the backcountry.

Get a Europass: Discounted train and bus passes are available to North American travelers prior to their departure. Buy them before you take off.

Pick a city: Places like Innsbruck are close to the skiing, yet aren’t resorts. Stay there for cheap and ski the local ski areas.

The simple made special for New Year’s

s the holiday season draws to a close, some prefer to spend a quiet New Year’s at home instead of venturing out.

Ideally, preparing for this celebration should require a minimum of time hovering over the stove and standing in line at the grocery store.

Chris Clarke, resident chef at Door-toDoor Organics, a service providing weekly home food delivery, recognizes the need for an elegant New Year’s menu that’s easy to prepare.

“I know that the holidays can be especially stressful when you want to throw an impressive dinner party,” she says. “I wanted to showcase recipes that are showy and seemingly extravagant, but are straightforward and uncomplicated.”

For New Year’s, Clarke recommends four of her own recipes, which are among many available at the Door-toDoor Organics website (http://colorado.doortodoororganics.com). The site lets service subscribers select recipes as well as avoid grocery lines by directly ordering ingredients for home delivery.

Clarke’s celebratory menu features a smoked salmon starter, salad adorned with pecan and cherry, beef tenderloin with blue cheese sauce and a rosemary pear tart. She suggests simple roasted potatoes as a side, and recommends tenderloin from the San Luis Valley’s

Blue Ranch. Clarke points out this grass-fed meat is “never confined, never fed grain or animal byproducts, and never given hormones or antibiotics.”

For the appetizer, Clarke says that hot-smoked salmon provides a flakier, less salty alternative to lox. Clarke also explains why the dessert pairing of pear and rosemary works.

“The lemon-pine flavor of the highly aromatic rosemary helps to ground the sweetness of the pears,” she says.

“What an astonishing moment for your guests when they taste the familiar in unexpected ways.”

Hot Smoked Salmon on Cucumber Rounds with Crème Fraîche ¾ lb. Alaskan sockeye hot smoked salmon, crumbled 1 cucumber, with strips peeled and sliced into 1/2-inch rounds 8 ounces Crème Fraîche, stirred well Lay out all the cucumber rounds. Put a small circle of crème fraîche on each round.

Place some of the salmon on top of the crème fraîche.

Drizzle a little more crème fraîche over the top. Serve immediately.

Cherry and Pecan Salad with Orange Vinaigrette ¼ cup orange juice ½ lb. cherries, pitted and roughly chopped 1 shallot, minced 1 head romaine or green leaf lettuce, leaves washed, dried and broken into bitesized pieces 1 cup pecans ¾ cup olive oil (approximately) 1 tsp. Dijon mustard Pepper and salt Toss the lettuce, ¾ of the cherries and half of the nuts into a salad bowl.

In a small bowl, whisk the shallots, mustard and orange juice together.

Season with salt and pepper. Slowly drizzle in the olive oil, tasting the vinaigrette as you go on a piece of lettuce. You may not need all the oil, depending on the acidity of the orange juice. When the vinaigrette suits your taste, dress the salad with it and toss to combine. Serve with the rest of the cherries and nuts on top.

Beef Tenderloin with Blue Cheese Sauce 6 tenderloin filets, 5-8 ounces each ½ cup Point Reyes blue cheese,

crumbled 2 cups heavy cream 2 shallots, minced 2 tbsp. olive oil White pepper Pepper and salt Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Season the filets with the salt and pepper. Heat an oven-proof sauté pan over medium high heat. Add the olive oil and heat through. Add the filets and sear until dark golden brown on each side.

Place the pan in the oven and roast until the desired doneness is achieved.

Rare, the thermometer reads 130 degrees, medium rare will be 150 degrees, and well done is when the filet is 165 degrees. Place the shallots and heavy cream in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil, then turn to a simmer. Add the blue cheese and cook, stirring for five minutes.

Season with salt and pepper. Serve the filets with a drizzle of the blue cheese sauce over the top.

Aloy succeeds Chy for Thai

ust to show that Hollywood doesn’t have a monopoly on contrivance, it’s worth noting how Hong Kong filmmakers dealt with the challenge of making a sequel to the gangster epic A Better Tomorrow. The problem (spoiler alert!) was that the charismatic protagonist Mark, played by the incomparable Chow Yun-Fat, was shot dead at the end of the first film. A Better Tomorrow 2 opens in Hong Kong and shifts to New York, where we encounter Ken, Mark’s long-lost identical twin, coincidentally played by Chow. For the rest of the movie, Ken is Mark 2.0, and he even dons his brother’s trademark shades and bullet-ridden trench coat for the climatic shootout.

Arriving at Boulder’s Aloy Thai Cuisine, I wondered if this restaurant is the Ken to its predecessor restaurant, Chy Thai, aka the Mark of this labored analogy. The location is the same, and an exterior banner touts that the food and ownership are the same, although the name has changed. Inside, the most noticeable difference is disappearance of the counter apparatus which gave the former incarnation a down-market, cafeteria vibe.

Friend Shannon and I went for lunch, when entrée pricing is based on your protein choice. One

selects a stir-fry, curry, noodle or fried rice dish, and the cost for one with chicken, beef, pork or tofu is $8.

Those prepared with shrimp or mixed seafood, consisting of mussel, squid and shrimp, cost $9. A cup of clear broth with vegetables, cleanly flavored and not overly salty, accompanies the entrees.

We started with the $6 Taud Mun Kung, an appetizer of four fried fish cakes with dipping sauce featuring diced cucumber and red onion. Bits of carrot and green vegetable dotted the piping hot patties, golden in appearance, and possessing delicate seafood savor set off by the dip’s tart and sweet qualities.

Shannon’s choice was a red roast chicken curry, awash in coconut milk, and the more than unusual additions of grape and pineapple. As always, the coconut provided rich notes, although the sweetness of this ingredient and the fruit suggested this dish might benefit from less sugar. That said, the complex curry (we didn’t specify spice levels) was a welcome antidote to wintry cold, and the creamy and peppery accents balanced nicely.

Similar equilibrium informed the Pad Kra Pow, a chicken stir-fry blending chile, Thai basil, bell pepper, bamboo shoots and onion. The chicken was

Clay’s Obscurity Corner Bok tong

A

long with char siu bao, or barbecued pork buns, bok tong go was the other major Chinese treat from my childhood. Sold in slabs about the size of a modest pizza slice and about a half inch thick, this gooey white confection came atop a piece of wax paper. Sweet was the dominant flavor, but it also possessed a subtle tang, the result of fermentation of the main ingredient, rice, tempered by sodium bicarbonate. I associate this dish with dim sum joints and inexpensive Asian bakeries, although I was surprised to encounter it at a trendy Pan-Asian restaurant in Madrid.

moist and tender, and the veggies retained a welcome hint of crunch. Alternating bites of this entrée with fluffy rice made for an agreeable experience with the sharper qualities of chile and basil evening out the mellowness of poultry and vegetable.

To finish, we split a $5 dessert of mango and sweet sticky rice. The fruit was remarkably fresh and sweet, making for a welcome reminder of warmer climes in freezing temperature. Unlike other preparations where the rice is simply steamed and sweetened, the starch here was drenched in light syrup with almond notes. More significantly, the rice’s texture resembled a favored childhood Chinese dessert, bok tong go, greatly enhancing my enjoyment.

Like Ken of the Hong Kong movies, Aloy preserves the high points of its predecessor. While it may not take Thai cuisine to new places, it will likely satisfy cravings for this complex Southeast Asian fare, especially with the competitively priced lunch menu.

Peel the pears, cut in half, and remove the cores. Cut each half into four slices.

Place the pears in a large heavy skillet or saucepan. Combine sugar, rosemary and water and pour over the pears.

Heat to boiling; reduce heat.

Simmer, covered, until pears are soft but not mushy, 6-8 minutes, depending on the ripeness of the pears. Cool.

Roll out the puff pastry until ¼-inch thick. Poke the pastry all over with a fork.

uid. Arrange the pears over the pastry, leaving a 2-3 inch border around the edge. Wrap the pastry up and around the pears, leaving an opening about 5 inches in diameter.

Combine the apricot preserves with 4 tablespoons of the pear liquid in a small saucepan. Heat to boiling; strain.

Brush the pears with half the apricot mixture. Bake 30 minutes. Remove from oven and brush with the remaining apricot mixture.

Whip the heavy cream, vanilla and honey together until stiff. Serve the tart slightly warmed with the whipped cream.

irected by Steven Spielberg, a longtime fan of the source material, The Adventures of Tintin begins with a gorgeous animated credit sequence, deftly incorporating bits of the narrative about to unfold. It’s as nifty as the overture in Spielberg’s earlier Catch Me If You Can, both scored, with a glancing touch, by his longtime mood generator, composer John Williams. It’s always gratifying to hear what Williams can do when he’s not in attack mode.

Then comes the film proper, which is mostly in attack mode. It is not animation.

Nor is it traditional live-action. Working with fellow producer Peter Jackson, who is already set to direct the second Tintin movie, Spielberg goes the 3-D motioncapture technology route, wherein actors perform scenes and are then digitally manipulated into a free-form design universe where the laws of physics and derring-do are more spatially expansive. The style builds upon that of Robert Zemeckis’ Polar Express, and other mo-cap features.

Sort-of animation, let’s call it.

All those millions, and they still can’t get the teeth or the eyes right with this approach. The whole of Tintin takes place somewhere in the uncanny valley of a dubious creative decision. Much of the action and violence has a clinical, photo-realistic quality, so that a two-second gag involving a cat sinking its claws into a human face elicits a wince rather than a laugh.

For years, Spielberg noodled around with ideas for adapting the comic books about the intrepid young

Tintin (who looks either 12, 22 or somewhere in between) and his faithful dog Snowy as they come into possession of a model sailing ship, the Unicorn, containing a clue to the whereabouts of a vast treasure.

Kidnapped and bundled on board a steamship commanded by the career alcoholic Capt. Haddock, our boy-man hero becomes the pawn in an age-old duel between Haddock, a good old sot, and the sinister Sakharine.

Jamie Bell is the actor mo-capped for Tintin; Daniel Craig, unrecognizable, voices and “acts” the bad guy; Andy Serkis, the mo-cap king thanks to his Gollum in The Lord of the Rings and Kong of King Kong, among others, hams it up as Haddock.

Unfortunately, the role is a wheeze.

And the film is an extended, exhausting chase. In flashes, Tintin enables Spielberg to dazzle with his set pieces, notably a plane crash in the Sahara, and a motorcycle sequence devised to run the sort-of-animated equivalent of a single, insanely complicated shot.

But I fear Spielberg and Jackson hitched their wagon to the wrong technological star here. Still, those first few minutes are among the most charming of the year. So we can forgive, to a degree, a movie wherein everybody’s face looks like a Botox party gone wild, followed by a wooden-teeth afterparty.

Uncomfortable in the uncanny valley

These titles mean a great deal to Tintin’s European fan base — the film has already made close to a quarter-billion dollars overseas — and less so to the average American multiplex visitor. The script, by Steven Moffat and the team of Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish, follows

ap, but easygoing pap with a cast you can live with for a couple of hours, We Bought a Zoo is co-writer and director Cameron Crowe’s adaptation of a memoir by Benjamin Mee entitled We Bought a Zoo: The Amazing True Story of a Young Family, a Broken Down Zoo, and the 200 Wild Animals That Change Their Lives Forever.

Fans of Crowe’s Jerry Maguire (his best to date) and Almost Famous aren’t the natural primary audience for this family-friendly product. But I survived it, and even enjoyed parts of it, which is more than I can say for Crowe’s Elizabethtown, a romantic comedy so smug it actually stopped my heart from beating for a few seconds and therefore technically killed me.

Honest and true in every on-screen impulse, Matt Damon plays Mee, who in this fictionalized version of the real story is a withdrawn widower with two children. (Mee’s real-life wife died three months after the Boulder Weekly

purchase of the zoo.) Benjamin quits his job at the L.A. Times and, searching for a fresh start for his sweetnatured preteen daughter, played by Maggie Elizabeth Jones, along with the grieving teenaged son played by Colin Ford, he finds exactly what he wasn’t looking for: 18 acres plus a zoological park on the skids, whose workers are looking to reopen if the place passes inspection.

Scarlett Johansson plays the head zookeeper, conveniently single and available. Thomas Haden Church, the strongest source of wit and personality in the film, sets his line readings to “extra dry” as Mee’s older brother, who in a typical Crowe bit of overweening dialogue, reminds Benjamin that “human

interaction is a good thing” as is “sunlight” and “joy.” Bring it on!

What happens in We Bought a Zoo? Snakes sneak out of their cages.

A grizzly gets out, too. But this is no nightmare. Family bonds are strengthened. Cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto makes every exterior and interior as luscious as can be, even when somebody has to go buy something at a Home Depot.

Damon, thank the family-friendly-movie gods, really knows how to hold his head above the corn. Rarely can you ever point to a moment in this actor’s recent screen career when he oversells an interaction with a co-star. It’s a fine impulse, this sort of relaxed touch. By contrast, some of the reaction shots of the daughter, beaming, made me think idly vicious thoughts about those snakes and grizzlies. But the young actress cannot be faulted. She did not, after all, edit the picture.

Hugo To write off this dreamy, overwhelmingly beautiful movie as mere kids’ stuff would be an injustice. This adaptation of Brian Selznick’s illustrated children’s book The Invention of Hugo Cabret (John Logan wrote the screenplay) is as much of a personal Martin Scorsese picture as Raging Bull or Taxi Driver.
