There goes Danish again

I wonder what leads someone like Mr. Paul Danish (CU history, 1955) to continue to reside in Boulder if he feels as he writes. I find certain idiosyncrasies around Boulder that may be amusing, but if I, way over here in Faultless-Starch-won’t-iron-myclothes Longmont, dare to oppose fracking anywhere (and I do, within any and all municipalities), then

Danish is likely to impugn my ancestry and question my loyalty to truth, apple pie and the American Way, if not the U.S. Constitution.

Too bad the historical method did not stay with Mr. Danish after he left school. Logic, cause and effect, substantiation all have their place, and it is to be hoped he would apply these before he unloads on us North Korean sympathizers who disagree that any-

Measuring Congress by the numbers

ever have so few done so little for so many. But at last, they’re gone — Congress has adjourned for the year.

And what a year it was! A few numbers sum up the sorry story, so let’s review them. For example, 16. That’s the number of days that a gaggle of tea party Republicans shut down our government by throwing an October hissy

fit. Oh, add 24 billion to that — $24 billion is the economic loss America suffered from the tea partiers’ shutdown stunt.

Speaking of stunts, check out the number of times the House GOP has voted to make the political point that it doesn’t want Obamacare to work. It now totals 47 times.

Now here’s a telling number: 239.

That’s how many paid days off our Congress critters gave themselves in 2013. Yes, for two-thirds of the year, they were no-shows at their ornate workplace. Hey, stuff like shutting down government and casting meaningless votes is tiring, and you’ve gotta get your rest to keep up the pace.

And here’s a big, angry number that our well-heeled lawmakers can’t seem to see: 11 million. That’s how many of our fellow Americans are jobless, some 4 million of whom have been out of work for more than 6 months. Yet

Just before taking off for their Christmas break, GOP lawmakers pushed a budget deal that killed an emergency benefit program for people who’re mired in the misery of long-term unemployment. Yes, in the Season of Joy and Goodwill, Congress — Ho-Ho-Ho! — cut off this essential lifeline for 1.3 million workers and their families. Another 1.9 million will lose their benefits next year.

Pierson, 18, brought with him a shotgun, about 125 rounds of ammunition, three Molotov cocktails, a machete and a grudge against the school librarian, who also served as the school’s debate team coach and had suspended Pierson from the team.

Pierson headed for the library. He fired a shot down a hallway. Then he shot Claire Davis, 17, in the head at point blank range while she was sitting with a friend in the hall. He shot her for no apparent reason other than that she happened to be “in the wrong place at the wrong time,” according to Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson. She died on Dec. 21.

According to the Associated Press, Pierson fired off three more shots and lit off a Molotov cocktail, which fortunately failed to explode.

Seconds later, he reached the library.

Then he shot himself. Total elapsed time: 80 seconds.

(He never encountered the librarian/debate coach, who hasn’t been iden-

According to Sheriff Robinson, Pierson shot himself less than a minute and a half after his rampage began because a school resource officer, or more plainly, an armed sheriff ’s deputy assigned to the school, was “closing in.”

Robinson said that the size of Pierson’s arsenal suggested that he didn’t intend to limit his killing to the librarian. So did the fact that he had written the numbers of five classrooms on his arm in ink, along with the Latin phrase “The die is cast.”

The fact that he randomly shot Ms. Davis would be further evidence of that as well.

“His intent was evil, and his evil intent was to harm multiple individuals,” Robinson said.

However, Pierson’s rampage ended with his suicide 80 seconds after it began, with one dead instead of dozens, because an armed security officer intervened.

danish plan most of the other school shootings in the U.S., Pierson wasn’t the only person in the school who had a gun.

There was also an armed officer present who had a gun, who knew how to use it, and who, when the moment of truth arrived, swiftly moved to confront evil.

Shortly after the Newtown killings, Wayne LaPierre, the executive vice president of the National Rifle Association, held a press conference at which he called for putting armed security officers in every school in the country.

“The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun,” he said. “Would you rather have your 911 call bring a good guy with a gun from a mile away or a minute away?”

Gun control advocates, and progressives generally, predictably sneered.

“They [the NRA] offered a paranoid, dystopian vision of a more dangerous and violent America where everyone is armed and no place is safe,” said New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

“They were blaming it on all kinds of other things instead of guns themselves,” said Medea Benjamin, co-director of the political exhibitionist group Code Pink, who was escorted out of LaPierre’s press conference after holding up a poster that read “NRA blood on your hands.”

“If your purpose is to reduce gun violence in schools, then the solution isn’t to add more guns to schools,” said Dennis Van Roekel, president of the National Education Association.

He called the NRA proposal “out of touch.”

The American people disagreed. A Pew Research poll taken a couple weeks after LaPierre made his proposal found that 64 percent of those surveyed agreed with the NRA. Among those agreeing with the NRA was the Newtown School Board, which voted unanimously to put armed guards in all of its schools.

I don’t know whether Arapahoe High School got its armed guard before or after Sandy Hook, but that is beside the point. The important point is that when evil struck it had one. According to press reports, the resource officer was in the school cafeteria when Pierson started shooting. He went racing down the hall toward the library, warning people to take cover along the way, and essentially bottled up Pierson in the library, at which point Pierson realized the game was up and shot himself. Adam Lanza, the shooter, entered the school at approximately 9:30 a.m., by shooting his way through a locked glass door. The first 911 call reached the Newtown police at 9:35 a.m. The first officers reached the school at 9:39 a.m. At 9:40 a.m. the officers heard the last shot that was fired — the one with which Lanza ended his

own life as the police arrived. At 9:45 a.m. — 15 minutes after the massacre began and 5 minutes after it ended — officers entered the school.

Or, to put it another way, when seconds count, the police are there in minutes.

In the 10 minutes during which Lanza had his way in the school, he killed 20 students and six teachers and wounded two others.

The Arapahoe High attack

occurred one day before the first anniversary of the Sandy Hook massacre. Its outcome showed that LaPierre was right and that his progressive critics were arrogant ignoramuses who cannot be trusted to secure the safety of children or anyone else. Total elapsed time: 364 days and 80 seconds.

SEASONS GREETINGS TO THOSE WHO CLAIM FRACKING BANS AND MORATORIUMS ARE BAD We used the word “claim” in the headline instead of words like “think” or “believe” because, frankly, it’s really hard to find anyone not being compensated by the oil and gas industry who honestly believes that delaying fracking in populated areas while more research and testing on its health and environmental impacts is done is a bad idea. The exception is those nut jobs who think that questioning any action of a corporation makes you a Marxist.

Let’s recap just a little of what we Commies have learned about fracking and oil and gas shale production while the drilling rigs have been paused by our local bans and moratoriums.

We now have a study out of the University of Colorado that found that if you live within a half-mile of a production platform your chances of getting cancer increase significantly. Our own government researchers here in Boulder (the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) have found that oil and gas wells and production facilities are responsible for much of the ground level ozone in the area, ozone that is bad for everyone but poses a severe health risk for asthmatics and others with respiratory illnesses.

We have research that shows that gas from as deep as 12,000 feet can find its way into our shallow groundwater after a 50- to 100-year upward migration. That means that the 20 percent to 40 percent of fracking fluid that is unrecoverable after each well is fracked likely has the same chance to make it into our water supplies at approximately the same pace. Sucks to be you, future generations.

And most recently, a new study out of the University of Missouri found that it’s likely that fracking and other oil and gas activity, like spills, are putting hormone-disrupting chemicals into our surface and groundwater supplies, including the Colorado River that serves as a drinking water supply to tens of millions of Americans.

No wonder the industry wants to drill everything now before the rest of the research comes in. Just imagine what other dreadful discoveries we will be making regarding fracking and oil and gas shale development in the next few years.

We’re afraid it’s just going to get harder and harder for all those industry PR hacks to sleep at night. Perhaps someone should research that.

REPEAL THE COGCC This holiday season, when you’re lying around the house, engorged from your feasting and drinking, looking for something to do, why not hop online and sign the petition challenging the constitutionality of the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission?

Yes, this is that state board that is charged with simultaneously policing and promoting the oil and gas industry. Too often, it neglects the former.

So Carl L. McWilliams has launched a petition that reads: “The Colorado Oil & Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC) statutes illegally altered the Colorado Constitution @ ART. V, Sec. 35, ART. XX, Sec. 6 without the ‘consent of the governed.’ Therefore, Gov. Hickenlooper and the Colorado General Assembly have violated their constitutional oaths and must convene a special Constitutional Convention to remedy the unconstitutional Colorado Oil & Gas Conservation Commission statutes.”

The petition, which has garnered more than 400 signatures, is available at http://bit.ly/1c1C4lE. In his invitation to sign the petition, McWilliams cites the fact that Gov. John Hickenlooper has sued the city of Longmont over its fracking ban and has threatened to sue other municipalities that follow Longmont’s path.

“Gov. Hickenlooper is guilty of the acts and omissions of ‘Constitutional Torts’ and must be made to answer to We the People of Colorado, (the Sovereign), in Federal District Court in Denver,” McWilliams writes.

A bit Tea Party-ish, don’t you think? Maybe the two ends of the political spectrum have more in common than they think. After all, the Occupy movement originally counted Tea Partiers among its supporters.

On the fracking issue, as with so many others, we have to agree that local control by the citizenry is better than a heavy-handed, big-government approach.

The

first day the Jamestown Elementary School teachers could get back to the two-room schoolhouse in Jamestown after the floods in September, there were still huge boulders alongside barely there roads. The road to the schoolhouse was washed out entirely — in its place, a bare cliff. The detour route led past house after house torn open or mud-stained or halfburied in rocks and rubble after the onslaught that Jim Creek had become. The effect was stirring.

“When I saw it, the first time up there to get supplies for the school, I was just, I couldn’t believe the impact of the water, that the water could be such a strong force,” says Ines Elizabeth Miller Rutkovskis, who teaches third through fifth grades at the elementary school.

“It was so weird, because the first like half-hour I couldn’t do anything, I was so shaken up after seeing all that damage,” says Gay Paxton, Jamestown elementary’s kindergarten through second grade teacher. “I just, I wanted to leave right away. … If [Ines] hadn’t been with me, I would have left. …

It was hard, really hard. … I know those people really well.”

She tears up as she talks about how devastating it was — her stepson and his wife live in Jamestown and lost their home and the land that went with it — and just then, a third-grader finishing her reading assignment comes up and says, “Ms. Gay, I finished chapter 12.”

Paxton draws a breath and says, “How about you come up with three questions about the chapter for me, OK?” More than three months after the flood, backhoes are still scraping the roads in and out of Jamestown clear of mud and dirt. Asphalt is stacked up on the side of the road, which has been washed down to one lane in places. Pine trees lay browning in the widened creek beds, some braced up against the guardrails or bridge rails or dirt embankments, and it’s clear where hillsides gave way, burying roads, and that the water shoved absolutely everything out of its way.

Jamestown had lost a beloved local, Joe Howlett,

former owner of the Jamestown Mercantile, and many of the residents had been carried out to safety by helicopters. Some 60 of them had spent a night in the Jamestown schoolhouse as an emergency evacuation center, sleeping on pads used for the kids’ gym classes and wrapped in blankets gathered from the homes on the north side of town that weren’t cut off by the raging waters.

The schoolhouse that served as emergency lodging is one of only a few one-room schoolhouses left in the country (neighboring town Gold Hill claims

steps untouched. A handwritten sign offers details on when and where to pick up personal items left behind after class ended that Wednesday before it started to rain.

What has stepped in to fill the hole where homes and bridges and roads once were is a fervent sense of community, and insistence on staying together.

Despite the massive environmental upheaval surrounding them, the people of Jamestown are trying to keep their kids on sound footing. So when the floodwaters washed away the road to their school, their families held a meeting and said the best thing was to keep the kids together. Paxton and Rutkovskis, heeding the call of the parents in the community, have kept Gay Paxton, who usually two now divided groups teaches kindergarten to second grade at Jamestown of students together.

Elementary, now has 13 kids, up Jamestown Elementary to fifth grade, in an improvised classroom while the Jamestown has become Jamestown schoolhouse remains closed.

“What they’ve experienced makes them in need of community that they know and that they’re familiar with,” Rutkovskis says. “I think if they were plopped into different schools, all separated, I think it would have been really hard to adapt. This way they have me and Gay and [paraprofessional] Beth [Brotherton] as strong rocks, or like a foundation, to keep them moving forward.”

kids together — not bused to Nederland, because that’s not our home,” says Tessa Stampes, mother of a 7-year-old boy currently enrolled at Jamestown Elementary, a 12-yearold girl who completed her K-5 education there, and a 4-year-old boy who is expected to start kindergarten there next year.

The idea of hosting school at their house started for Stampes and her husband, Jeff, as a bit of a joke, but it caught on. So by the Wednesday a week after the flood, school resumed, with 13 of the students coming to classes with Paxton in the living room of their house in Bar-K Ranch with the kind of mountain character that often leaves the houses mostly obscured by the pine trees.

“When it’s that kind of trauma, they think, and I have to agree with them, that it’s better to keep as much stability as you can in their lives,” Paxton says.

“They were adamant about keeping the kids together, and I think it was a great thing. I think it turned out to be really good, and I feel really privileged to be able to do it.”

“Nobody could have done it quite the same way,” says Scott Boesel, principal of Flatirons Elementary and the Jamestown Elementary School. “You couldn’t have taken any other group of parents and teachers and students and made it work. A family opening up their living room just wouldn’t happen.”

For two months, that was the schoolroom for these kids. Some of them could, for the first time, bike to school. Without desks, they started doing their work on clipboards, and on nice autumn days made use of a large table on the porch. A play area was set up in the kitchen. The Stampes even replaced the flooring in their home to put down a hard surface instead of carpet for the kids, Home Depot donated materials to put up a wall of corkboard, and volunteers from Jamestown coordinated an effort to get tables and chairs from the Jamestown school to the Stampes’ living room even before the roads were repaired and while people were still using ropes to manage the steep slopes left after the multiple mudslides in Jamestown.

Then, the school district negotiated to relocate the students to a Christian camp just a few miles up the road from the Bar-K Ranch, and transformed a building emptied for the season into an elementary school classroom, adding a bathroom and appliances to the kitchen.

“That place went from bare concrete and walls to carpet and school desks in just a couple weeks,” says the interim camp manager who oversaw the school’s move-in.

the classroom Paxton used, and there’s a divided section with tables. When Paxton says it’s lunchtime, the kids leap up from their tasks, retrieve lunch bags from the cubbies loaned to Jamestown West from another school and take seats at the tables.

Half the room looks like a typical elementary school classroom, with bright letters of alphabets and numbers up to 100 hanging on the walls, and tubs of rainbow-colored “manipulatives” — objects to count on and practice math — even desks with headphones at the ready for kids to put in a tape and listen to a book being read, and shelf after shelf of childrens’ books. Paxton spent evenings packing up the contents of her classroom in Jamestown and then unpacking it at the camp. It’s the books, she says, that were the biggest thing to get out of the Jamestown schoolhouse and back to the kids, who speed right through them, but she’s now received so many donated books the task of hauling them back to the schoolhouse in Jamestown looks daunting.

At the end of the room, near where the camp has a fireplace and stage set up, a sign on the wall reads “music” and music notes hover around it, ready for the music teacher who comes once a week. At another corner of the room, mesh bags loaded with balls and a rack hung with hula hoops wait for the twiceweekly visits from a P.E. teacher.

All the moving around and missed days in September means it’s been a bit of a crunch to get everyone up to speed.

With all the kids in one room, Paxton has to teach one grade level out loud to everyone and individualize with assignments — like giving the second grade-level math lesson and tailoring individual assignments to the skill level of the first graders and kindergarteners sitting through that lesson. For reading assignments, students pair up with someone at the same level to read beside, seated on a pillow with a blanket spread over their two laps, or studiously perched at their desks. Writing assignments see many of the kids reaching for the sturdy, black laptops the district purchased for each student in class.

Paxton works individually with each kid as much as three times a day, taking notes on what they

worked on, what issue they might have had and what projects they’ve got ongoing so she can pick up where she left off the day before. A thick threering binder holds her notes for writing, and one of equal size holds the notes for math.

Paxton’s desk is busy with their requests and questions as they work through a writing assignment: thank you notes for a pair of Naropa students who came for a dance workshop with them.

One first grader just pulls up a chair and her paper and pencil so she can ask perpetual “How do you spell …?” questions.

While a fifth grader waits for his turn to ask Paxton for help — turns out, he wants to brainstorm what to write — the first grader asks, “How do you spell ‘rock’?” and he leans over to answer it for her.

That’s the thing that makes it like a family, Paxton says, that the kids all help one another out.

It’s the opposite of bullying. The weakest among them gets the most help. They share without being told.

“If somebody’s struggling with an assignment or something, I don’t even have to ask, they just jump in and help,” Paxton says.

Paxton worked as a paraprofessional in schools for years, a single mom taking care of her son and working while slowly chipping away at the teaching certificate she finished at age 50 — a point by which many teachers, who qualify for retirement at age 55, begin thinking about retirement. But Paxton instead is looking ahead to a particularly emotional fifth grade graduation this year, when the two students who started with her as kindergarteners six years ago, the first year she taught at Jamestown, move on to middle schools in Nederland or Boulder.

“I think I have the best job in the whole world. I really do,” Paxton says. “It would be a really hard job to leave, because no matter when you leave, you’re leaving a family that you’ve had for forever.”

Ten years ago, Rutkovskis took the job teaching at Jamestown as her first after finishing her teaching degree in New England, where she’d worked at a multi-age school in Vermont.

“When the job opened up, I knew it was for me. I just knew,” says Rutkovskis, who volunteered with the Peace Corps in Ecuador for three years. “I like a different kind of setting. I’m used to working on my own a lot. … We’re kind of on our own up there. …

And I like the mountain setting, the independence of doing something different, not just the regular teacher classroom.”

y all accounts, Lyons Town Administrator Victoria Simonsen has gone above and beyond, not only in the immediate emergency response to the September flood that wiped out much of her town, but in the recovery effort that ensued.

“She’s been working tirelessly, nonstop, 24 hours a day, working with [the Federal Emergency Management Agency] to help her little community,” says Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle.

Lyons Town Clerk Deb Anthony says Simonsen and another employee who live in Lyons were the only ones on duty for days because the other staffers couldn’t get into town.

“They were up for virtually 72 hours straight,” Anthony says, not-

ing that the floodwaters even separated Simonsen from her home for a period of time.

Anthony adds that Simonsen has been working tirelessly ever since and seems to have a boundless amount of energy.

“She didn’t stop,” she says of Simonsen. “It was just incredible, the way she just kept everything going and everything straight in her head all the time.”

Anthony also notes that under Simonsen’s leadership, the majority of the town’s residents have returned.

“She wanted everybody home by the holidays,” she says of Simonsen. “We don’t have everybody, we still have some people down in the confluence area whose homes are just not habit-

able at this point. But she’s probably got 80 percent of the town or more back home, with all their utilities. … We’re lucky to have her. She is just awesome.”

Longmont Emergency Manager Dan Eamon agrees that Simonsen deserves recognition, saying that the depth of what Lyons has endured pales in comparison to what his city experienced.

“I was so impressed with the way she kept it together,” he says.

“She was a steadfast leader for her town. She believes in her community, and that was her goal, to get her community back on track.”

“She did a good job of getting Lyons back on its feet,” Satur says.

“She had the comfort to say, ‘We can’t do this all by ourselves.’ They leaned on Longmont a lot.”

herself, with one part-time paraprofessional to help.

After persuading the district to hire a second teacher, she got to choose Paxton as her partner in teaching at the school.

“It’s like a home away from home,” Rutkovskis says.

“When they’re together this long, they’re like family,” Paxton says. “It’s just such a different feel here than it is in a larger school, because everybody’s so close, everybody’s so kind. One of the things the parents really like about this school is that the older kids are really kind to the younger kids and really caring, and they teach each other.”

For now, her kids are in a separate room at the Community Montessori School in South Boulder.

They’re hoping to go back at the start of the next school year.

“I miss our mountain school, where we could go for hikes to the mine and the cemetery and the post office. Where we include locals in the classroom,” Rutkovskis says.

One of her students lived below the mountain the mudslide came down from, and waded with her family through mudflow up to her waist to get out of the house and to the other side of the hill, leaving behind everything but what they had on their backs. She’s putting that story with others into a video the kids are making, telling the story of the flood from their own perspectives. And what kind of perspectives do they bring?

“Just how scary it was,” Rutkovskis says. “How they want to teach other kids and families what to do, if it should happen again, not just here but in other parts of the country. They learn that, they can just leave their home, stuff isn’t important. Family is important, community is important.”

The video is a STEM project that will include science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

and Atmospheric Administration come in to explain to her students what happened with the weather that led to them leaving their hometown in Chinook helicopters — how a tropical storm built in the Pacific Ocean near Mexico was pulled north by a low-pressure system, bringing monsoonal tropical moisture.

That storm pulled even more moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and moved north in an unusual counterclockwise direction, hitting the foothills of the Rocky Mountains with an upslope flow. It hit another front moving south from Canada and stalled out on its rotation, rose up over the Front Range of Colorado and hit an elevation where the moisture in the air turned into rain, most of which fell in a 36-hour period between Sept. 11 and early in the morning of Sept. 13. It rained some 16-20 inches over Jamestown — the average annual rainfall — over just three days.

When the flood started in Jamestown, Paxton got the call at 4 a.m. that school was canceled. Then she headed out with her husband, chief of the Indian Peaks Fire Department, to put up road blocks to keep people from driving down the canyon because the roads were already gone.

The paraprofessional who works with Paxton and Rutkovskis, Beth Brotherton, was pulled from bed at midnight to set up the emergency shelter in the school.

“We probably had about 60 people in the school that night,” she says. “Everybody from the lower part of town that could get to the school, got to the school. And so we just did the best we could with what we had at that point, because the school was not set up as an evacuation center so there weren’t cots or anything.”

Brotherton is the principal’s assistant, secretary, nurse and special education paraprofessional for the Jamestown school. “I have a whole list of job descriptions, but that’s how it works in a small school,” she explains.

She started volunteering to teach art in Jamestown 15 years ago, when her children were in school there and the district stopped sending art, music and P.E. teachers to Jamestown Elementary and members of the community came forward to teach those to the kids.

“I enjoyed it so much … I just decided that if a job came available at Jamestown school — I wouldn’t want to be at just any school, I don’t think they’re all this nice — that I would take it,” she says with a laugh.

As the floodwaters were washing away the town, she was driving supplies through town in her Prius, until there was a hillside slide between her house and the school, and the car was trapped in mud. Moving over to her husband’s truck, she delivered food, clothes and dry socks — “People were wet,” she says — to those huddled in the Jamestown schoolhouse, even when she could hear the asphalt cracking underneath the truck’s tires. Meanwhile, the bridges to her own home at the north end of town washed out.

“There were so many great people that just stepped up to the plate,” she says. “People in town who knew how to filter water, they filtered water because we didn’t have water at that point, and people just cooked huge pots of food for us. Just amazing the way the community came together.”

By Sunday morning, most residents had been evacuated by the helicopter. She stayed until a swift water rescue team arrived to set up a Tyrolean traverse to get them out.

Her home, at the northeast end of Jamestown, wasn’t damaged (and she’d begged firefighters to stop by to give food and water to the pets they’d had to leave behind and lock up the house they’d left in such a hurry). When they could, as soon as they could, she and her family returned to their home, and lived without water, electricity or phones.

“It was like camping, but in a really nice house,” she says.

Boulder firefighters forced to adapt on the fly during flood

T

he best laid plans of mice and men oft go awry, or something like that.

Before the September floods, the Boulder Rural Fire Department, a mostly volunteer outfit, had a 60-page plan in case of flooding in the area where the Fourmile Fire raged just a few years ago.

“We had this great plan, but the storm was well beyond the scope of everything we ever expected,” says Jeff Webb, deputy chief and fire marshal for the Boulder Rural Fire Department. “So it forced us to make changes on Jeff Webb the fly.”

The September floods pulverized entire communities, and first responders in the community were forced to work days and nights to make sure as many people as possible got to safety. Many people likely deserve the title of person of the year, but we are going to recognize Webb as a runner-up for ability to adapt as the flood began to surpass the meticulous flood response plan drafted years earlier.

For instance, floodwaters and mudslides trapped mountain residents behind impassable roads. So firefighters hiked up the hills and went door-to-door, contacting residents and getting them to safety. The department’s fire engines were cherry-picking people off rooftops, but some of the locations the plan called for to be used as temporary housing were for some reason unavailable.

“We had an evacuation plan that was going to send them to a church on Jay Road, so the problem was that the person who was going to open up the church was trapped behind water, so they couldn’t open up the church,” Webb recalls.

Again, the firefighters had to improvise.

“We were driving [people who were rescued] around in the fire truck because there was no place to put them,” Webb says.

“So it was like, as soon as we find a safe place for you, we’ll find you a safe place, but for right now, these people are going to have to ride around with us. … We eventually just took them back to our station and put them in the easy chairs, put some blankets over them, and let them sleep for a few hours until we could find them a place to go.”

Webb himself found himself averaging maybe three hours of sleep a night, essentially moving from call to call for 40 hours straight. After the floodwaters receded, Webb didn’t stop. He spearheaded a fundraising campaign to help firefighters whose homes were damaged, raising and distributing almost $18,000.

“It is a brotherhood,” he says of firefighting.

had each of her children do something to earn $1, and then donated all of it, $234, to Jamestown Elementary.

“Everybody says how amazing it is when community comes together, but when you’re part of it… I mean you can hear it, hear people say it, but until you’re part of it, you don’t realize how phenomenal it can be, and how good it can feel,” Paxton says.

The City of Boulder recreation centers even offered free passes, whenever the kids want to come for a field trip. On a Friday just before winter break, the two halves of Jamestown Elementary reunited for the first time since Sept. 10 at the North Boulder Recreation Center. The entryway filled with the noise of them calling one another’s names and running to give hugs so tight one child picked the other up off the ground.

Recovery, yes, includes a lot of volunteer hands laboring at clearing the debris, but also moments like this, Rutkovskis says.

“I think it just takes time and healing and keep coming together like

this,” she says.

The long-term picture is a little uncertain. Jamestown has suffered significant floods and rebuilt twice in the last hundred years, and every time seems to come back stronger. Tara Schoedinger, mayor of Jamestown, says they’re trying to rebuild smarter and more resilient development in the stream corridor.

“If anybody is an example of resiliency, it’s those teachers,” she says.

The building permit moratorium is expected to be lifted by the end of January, and the county has estimated road repairs will be done by the end of February — literally paving the way for rebuilding efforts. The Jamestown schoolhouse itself is fine, but the district won’t reopen it for classes until there’s a permanent fix to the washedout road. That construction may begin in early 2014.

Jamestown is facing a winter with just 10 percent of its usual population of about 300.

The superintendent has promised not to close the school next year, but

there’s some concern that families could move.

“I think the town’s going to be different,” Rutkovskis says. “It’s not going to be the same — stronger, stronger community.”

She hopes to get the whole school together in the spring to plant trees, she says, in “a celebration of community and rebirth and healing in a place that needs it for erosion control.”

A potter from Jamestown recently visited her class, and the kids were tasked with rolling clay into balls, which represented the many rocks that came down during the floods and filled the streets. Those balls were then pressed onto a clay bowl that was eventually removed. On the outside, the round balls are still visible, representing the flood, but inside, it’s smooth, to represent healing.

“That’s how I see what we need to do together, you know, we need to go through this healing together,” Rutkovskis says. “It takes time to heal.”

an Eamon, Longmont’s emergency manager, was one of the first people mentioned when BW asked about the people who played a crucial role in that city’s flood response.

Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle points to the fact that Eamon served as grand marshal in Longmont’s Parade of Lights thanks to his efforts during the September flooding as evidence that the preparation exercises Eamon launched for various natural disasters paid off.

“He started all the planning for flooding many years ago,” adds Det. Cmdr. Jeff Satur of the Longmont Police Department.

Rigo Leal, public information officer for the city of Longmont, served on the emergency planning committee that Eamon helped form after he was hired nearly six years ago, and he says practicing for a flood scenario helped the city immensely.

Eamon says that committee has conducted preparation exercises for a different natural disaster each year, and it

focused on flooding two years ago. He says when the Federal Emergency Management Agency recently changed the city’s floodplain map, it prompted the city to go door-to-door to every city resident in the floodplain in an effort to educate them as well as encourage them to sign up for the city’s emergen-

cy notification system. Whether those residents’ choice was to be notified by reverse 911 call, text or email, Eamon says the outreach paid off when the real deal arrived last September.

He lauds the residents who chipped in to help the community, from the neighbors around the shelter at the St. Vrain Memorial Building who did laundry for families staying there and brought toys for their kids to play with to the members of the Southmoor Park community who turned out with snow shovels to dig out mud along Lefthand Drive.

Eamon also says city staff gave their time freely and selflessly.

“The human resources department came over and answered phones for five days,” he says. “We never, one time, heard ‘no,’ and that was a community-wide thing. What I’m going to remember is what the community did to support each other.”

A

retired University of Colorado mechanical engineering professor is challenging a new documentary that espouses the virtues of nuclear power.

The award-winning and widely acclaimed film Pandora’s Promise was released in theaters in June, aired on CNN Nov. 7, and is being made available on Netflix and iTunes. Directed by Robert Stone, it features prominent environmentalists who used to be opposed to the use of nuclear power but have had a change of heart. It argues that the cooling system problems that have caused past disasters like Fukushima can be corrected with new engineering. It explores the history of nuclear power, why it got a bad rap, and why it should be reconsidered as a viable solution to our energy crisis.

Frank Kreith disagrees.

Kreith, a Guggenheim Fellow at Princeton in 1951, taught at the University of California at Berkeley and Lehigh University before coming to CU-Boulder in 1959, where he taught for 20 years before spending a decade as chief of solar thermal research at the Golden-based National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Kreith also spent 13 years as an American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) legislative fellow at the National Conference of State Legislatures in Denver. He returned to CU in 2003 to teach part time in mechanical engineering. ASME established the Frank Kreith Energy Award in 2007 to honor his lifelong contribution to sustainable energy.

Kreith argues that the pro-nuclear stance outlined in Pandora’s Promise is not realistic, given that the technology needed to make it a viable source of energy is decades away. He says society should begin an aggressive transition to renewables like solar and wind now — while we still have the surplus energy needed to make that shift.

late August, Aaron Montgomery received some big news via email. The International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation, or UIAA, had officially selected him as an athlete to demonstrate ice climbing to the world during the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games.

Although he was only one of three U.S. athletes selected for the event, 32-year-old Montgomery took it all in stride.

“I’m a pretty even-keeled person, I don’t get too excited,” he says. “I definitely feel honored to be a part of it, and to be selected as an athlete.”

Montgomery’s cool confidence has served him well in the months leading up to the event. He’s managed to juggle rigorous training with caring for newborn twin boys, managing his Broomfield-based environmental remediation company and some extensive traveling to participate in some of the nation’s and the world’s most prestigious ice competitions. And he’s helping to push ice climbing in its movement from fringe extreme to established sport.

“I’d like to see it grow in the U.S.,” he says. “The Sochi Olympics is great exposure. There are a lot of people in the climbing community as a whole that think it’s a good thing.”

Montgomery stands out in a crowd.

He seems to tower about half a foot above most at a crag. With that long reach and his lean build, he looks like he was born to climb. But he didn’t get a traditional start. Montgomery’s southern accent gives away his Oklahoma roots.

He grew up on a cattle ranch, and didn’t start climbing until a college professor introduced him to the granite formations of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. He didn’t start tooling around on ice until he moved to Westminster about four years ago. Turns out, he was a natural.

“I guess I had a knack for it, so I decided to take it more seriously and [started] pushing hard,” he says.

According to UIAA representatives, 80 athletes will participate in Sochi’s ice climbing “cultural” event. Details are scant, but the athletes won’t be competing for medals. Instead, it’ll be an opportunity for those passionate about the sport, like Montgomery, to showcase ice climbing and dry tooling (climbing with ice axes on rock and plastic walls instead of ice) to the world. With any luck, spectators and Olympic committee members will be wowed enough to consider it as an official sport in coming years. And ice climbing has plenty of Boulder Weekly

aspects that impress. Like traditional rock climbing, ice tooling is incredibly gymnastic. It’s physical. It’s also committing.

“It requires more intuition,” Montgomery says. “You can’t feel the holds. You have to feel them with your tools.”

Of the 80 climbers going to Sochi, half are Russian — a telling sign of the sport’s popularity there. Only three are from the United States. Because they’re separated by geography — one lives in New Mexico, one is from Minnesota but lives in Canada and Montgomery lives in Colorado — the athletes are on their own to develop training regimes.

Montgomery is working with the Boulder-based Alpine Training Center, which helped him develop some highintensity endurance drills, as well as tool-specific training.

Montgomery was selected, in part, for his efforts to be an ambassador for ice climbing and to expand the sport locally. He regularly takes newbies to the park in Ouray or the ice flows near Vail, showing them the ropes.

Montgomery admits the growth of

popularity in both rock and ice climbing in the U.S. can be controversial. Some worry about the dangers the uninitiated could face in an unfamiliar backcountry environment — hazards like falling rock and inexperience with safety procedures.

Others dread the idea of growing crowds at their favorite crags. Still others see it as a quiet, bodily meditation in an outdoor environment, rejecting it as a “sport” ripe for commercialism and product pushes. Some fear increased exposure through high-profile competitions will only fuel those problems.

According to Montgomery, that aversion to climbing competitions and recognition of climbing as a “sport” represents a different mindset in North America versus Europe and Russia. He says that outlook is starting to shift, particularly as kids join gym and school club teams.

“It’s changing a little with a new, younger generation of competitive sport climbers and boulderers,” he says. “As they get older, maybe there will be opportunity for more widespread competitions.”

gy have also opened rock climbing to a larger crowd, and ice climbing is starting to catch up. Like rock climbing, ice climbing grew naturally out of mountaineering. But while rock climbers bolted crags and sent splitter cracks in the southwest desert, the long, grueling backcountry approaches to frozen waterfalls and insufferable climates still kept ice climbing inaccessible to most.

“In climbing ice, you have to have a gladiator-type mindset,” Montgomery says. “You’re cracking ice, cleaning ice, breaking pieces off, and you have to want to be doing that. Besides that, it’s really cold.”

In Europe, the pool of climbers hardy enough to take on ice also found a decent swath of spectators through competition events. According to the UIAA, ice competitions started in Russia as early as the 1970s, with others in France and Slovenia. In 2000, the first World Cup competitions started, which the European-based UIAA began managing a few years later.

In the U.S., ice climbing competitions were slower to catch on. The sport first debuted on a large, national scale during the first televised X Games in 1998, but it was dropped from the lineup the following year. Around the same time, however, buzz began generating about a little ice park in Ouray.

Southwest Colorado had been on ice climber radars for decades, as they flocked to classic falls like Bridal Veil near Telluride and ice flows near Silverton. In the late 1990s, some of those climbers noticed leaks in a hydropower pipe running through the sleepy town of Ouray. Those leaks drained in a canyon below, forming ice flows.

“Climbers are generally pretty lazy and like accessibility,” jokes Kevin Koprek, the Ouray Ice Park manager.

“Soon, they started promoting the leaks and, fortunately, local businesses as well.”

Ouray locals recognized ice climbing as a valuable economic asset during the slow winter season. The town worked with climbers and experimented with “ice farming,” growing flows with irrigated water. By the mid-1990s, the Ouray Ice Park, just a short walk from downtown, was formed. It quickly made its mark on the ice-climbing map. In 1996, it introduced its own ice climbing competition — The Ouray Ice Festival — one of only a handful in the United States.

ed bashed hands. Gore-Tex and other fabric innovations made clothing dryer and warmer. Equipment in general became lighter. These gear trends, combined with the ease and accessibility of new ice crag hotspots, like Ouray, Frankenstein Cliffs in New Hampshire and Sandstone Ice Park in Minnesota, have made the sport accessible to a larger base of North American climbers than ever before. And a handful of small ice competitions and festivals have sprung up in places like Colorado Springs; Bozeman, Mont.; Cody, Wyo.; and Munising, Mich. While the sport once seemed intimidating, more and more outdoor enthusiasts are now jumping on board.

“It’s been a slow, steady growth for us,” says Justin Roth of Petzl America, a major manufacturer of ice climbing gear.

“It’s definitely come more into the public eye with the Sochi Olympics, and the World Cup. Ouray seems to get bigger every year.”

Koprek, the Ouray Ice Park manager, has noticed that growth as well. They use a census method to measure the number of climbers visiting the park each day.

“Historically, three or four years ago, we had two or three busy weekends,” he says. “Now, pretty much every weekend, the park is packed.”

All that growth has brought around $3 million to the Ouray economy during the winter months, Koprek says. The Ouray Ice Festival, held for four days every January, has maxed out at 3,000 attendees for several years as well.

Koprek says they’re seeing the largest growth among women climbers and families.

“Here in Ouray, it’s appealing because of the accessibility and variability in the terrain,” Koprek says. “People of all abilities can climb right alongside each other.”

For Montgomery, ice climbing’s development as a more accessible activity is one of the most exciting things about participating in the Olympic event this winter. He just wrapped up the Bozeman Ice Festival in Montana, taking sixth place. He’ll spend a few weeks with his wife and 4-month-old boys, mixing in some drills at the Alpine Training Center in Boulder before taking off for the World Cup in South Korea. The following month, it’s Sochi.

“I just feel like, for me, it’s a move forward, it’s a recognition of climbing,” he says. “For people who don’t want that to happen, that’s fine. I think everyone gets out of climbing what they want to get out of climbing, and it’s great in that way. … I like to share the sport.”

ost-Louis Armstrong, there probably has not been a more influential American musician, save for Bob Dylan, than Lou Reed, who died two months ago at the age of 71, five years after marrying visionary multimedia artist Laurie Anderson in Boulder. It’s a shame that the legendary New York singer-songwriter, arguably responsible for both punk rock and indie rock, didn’t stick around here after tying the knot to give the music scene a kick in the ass.

Our lack of a relevant rock ’n’ roll scene (please let us know if there’s one out there), no doubt partly due to our lack of a small rock venue, is unfortunate, to say the least. But that can change as fast as you can say “Search and Destroy.” The Boulder music scene just needs a shot of creativity, cojones and a small venue where local rock bands can develop a good live show and a good following, soon.

Loretta Lynn’s profound sass. And the rest of The Electric Lady, the third LP of Monae’s still-blossoming career, is even more diverse than all that. Lorde’s “Royals” was undoubtedly the song of the year in pop music, but it’s just child’s play compared to “Givin Em What They Love.”

1. In a music world overflowing with interesting and exciting indie rock, it’s great to have a band like Queens of the Stone Age to bring us back to when bands like Foghat and the Guess Who pleased arenas full of stoners with intentions no greater than, well, rocking. On its sixth longplay, ...Like Clockwork, the Southern California hard-rock staple delivers another riff-heavy clinic on dark-yet-melodic rock ’n’ roll, highlighted by the mid-tempo “I Sat By the Ocean,” which would be right at home on classic rock radio between “Evil Woman” and “Immigrant Song.” On this standout track, QOTS frontman Josh Homme laments a cruel former lover with honesty rather than forgiveness, and the surrounding tasteful guitar is just dirty enough to provide lamenting poetry of its own.

Just as a dozen years ago I marveled at Rage Against the Machine’s uncanny ability to sell extreme leftist rock records to frat boys, something Crass never dared dream, I’m now floored that Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories, an addictive vocoder-focused dance album by two French men dressed as robots, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts. The intention and imagination behind Daft Punk’s music deserves a thick biography, but I’ve most enjoyed “Giorgio By Moroder,” which begins with the briefly spoken Schwarzenegger-esque autobiography of legendary Italian musician/producer Giovanni Giorgio Moroder and impressively morphs into what sounds like a captivating virtual boxing match between a brilliant DJ and a hot jazz-fusion group.

Seeing her appreciate Joey Ramone’s earth-sized heart makes me endlessly happy. But she also needs female role models in music, and I can find none better than the enigmatic Neko Case. On the uncompromising ballad “Night Still Comes,” from Case’s uncompromising sixth LP The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You, she veritably spits out the lyrics, “There’s always someone to say it’s easy for me / but I revenge myself all over myself / there’s nothing you can say to me” and continues, “Is it cause I’m a girl? If I puked up some sonnets, would you call me a miracle?” Case, now 43 and probably at the height of her vocal prowess, is not quite country but might be the best female country artist alive; she’s not quite indie but might be the best female indie artist alive. Listen to the buoyant defiance of the beautifully crafted “Night Still Comes” and you just might consider Case the best modern songwriter America’s got.

Speaking of Girl Power, Janelle Monáe’s badass duet with Prince, “Givin Em What They Love,” brought me back to the goosebump-inducing first time I heard Tricky’s powerful version of “Black Steel.” The talented, bold Monáe, a Kansas City native with six Grammy nominations already under her belt, defies categorization under the “urban” label, which is a pretty racist term anyway, and “Givin Em What They Love” reveals tinges of not only hard rock, hip-hop and funk but also just a smidgen of

The changes are beautiful; the delivery is impeccable. The ’Dog is back.

7. Shy Boise savant Trevor Powers, who records poignant, enchanting acid-pop under the name Youth Lagoon, mesmerized a packed Fox Theatre in Boulder a few days before the Great Flood. Director Stephen McNally’s incredible animated video for “Raspberry Cane,” the anthemic highlight of Youth Lagoon’s sophomore LP Wondrous Bughouse, is so mesmerizing that you might not have noticed the flood, even if you’d been up to your elbows in it, had you been watching McNally’s wonderful video on repeat. Powers is a genius, and the peculiar “Raspberry Cane” is an unforgettable love song for death and curiosity. McNally’s video makes it come alive Frankenstein style.

9. At this point, any Arcade Fire release is almost as feverishly anticipated as the Super Bowl. The Haitiinspired Reflektor, made to be listened to with a mirror ball twirling and the whole world dancing, did not disappoint, though it does include a few clunkers. A departure project not unlike the Clash’s sprawling Sandanista!, the Montreal band’s fourth LP more often gets compared to Remain in Light, though only the title track, which features a David Bowie cameo, is genuinely reminiscent of the Talking Heads’ classic Eno-produced move to afrocentric dance music. “Reflektor” is a darkly hypnotic treatise against the distancing, disorienting effect of online connection, and should tear the roof off the Pepsi Center on April 23.

It wasn’t until this month that I knew 65-year-old soul singer Charles Bradley was a James Brown impersonator, and a drifter, before finding his calling giving sweaty hugs to hipsters at his notoriously fun recent live shows. His original material is closer to Otis Redding and Marvin Gaye than Brown, and “Victim of Love,” the title track from Bradley’s stellar second LP, was recorded and performed with such authentic ’60s soul that it sounds like an uncovered Motown gem.

The news that a section of West 77th Street in Manhattan has finally been named Miles Davis Way made me forget rock ’n’ roll for a moment and wonder what magic might’ve come from the obscure Swedish instrumental trio Time is a Mountain recording tracks like the utterly time-stopping “Wooden Keys” at Davis’ legendary home studio on 77th, with the immortal trumpeter sitting in and Teo Macero producing. With just sparse bass, lyrical keyboard and inventive, charismatic drums à la Elvin Jones, these passionate Swedes, led by European jazz luminary Tomas Hallonsten, sketch universes of ghostly electricity on the mellow “Wooden Keys” (and all over this self-titled debut) without falling into the usual noodly fusion traps.

NUGGETS.COM From member to member, there are no seeds of discontent to be found in Yonder Mountain. To hear Aijala tell it, the band has never been more fruitful creatively. Though it just released YMSB 13 in October, it already has another dozen songs fit for recording.

With most of the year behind it, one hallmark stop for the band remains in 2013: a New Year’s Eve run in Boulder. The band has played New Year’s Eve in the state almost every year since its inception, decamping just twice for shows in St. Louis. This year, the band will enjoy a five-night stand at Boulder Theater, complete with special guests like lap-pedal steel guitarist Roosevelt Collier and mandolin legend Sam Bush. In addition, they will host a silent auction the first three nights to benefit Planet Bluegrass, raffling off prizes like festival tickets, venue laminates and artwork.

In their Dec. 28 show, the group will hang up the title and expectations of Yonder Mountain String Band for one set to perform as the elusive, costumed four-piece Cosmic Bowling League. It’s a rare treat — both for steadfast fans and, you’d imagine, the band. After all, Cosmic Bowling League is a relative unknown, with all the energy and potential that Yonder Mountain has managed to harness since 1998.

lame it on kismet, chance or “the rain,” but something funky worked in 2013’s favor.

For no discernible reason, the year offered up wildly brilliant unexpected gems (Upstream Color, Spring Breakers) and triumphant blockbusters with brains (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Iron Man 3, Man of Steel). Looking forward, 2015 is jam-packed with the single most anticipated docket of films ever scheduled, ranging from Avengers: The Age of Ultron early in the year to Star Wars Episode VII in December.

Sandwiched in the middle is 2014. The year nobody cares about. Let’s try to drum up some excite-

ment anyway.

Show me the money True, 2014 has less major franchise pics than 2015, which is pretty much sequel-geddon. But it’s not like there ain’t a slew of retreads and remakes. Robocop (February), TMNT (August), Godzilla (May), Dawn of the Planet of the Apes ( July), X-Men: Days of Future Past (May), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (April), The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (May) and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 (November) are no slouches.

Considering the mighty Marvel swagger these days, those three comic book movies alone may rack up a

couple billion worldwide. What I’m saying is, no need to worry about a Hollywood CEO bailout any time soon.

In fact, there are a couple of potential new franchises in the works. Divergent (March), which is based on the young adult novel of the same name, features Shailene Woodley getting her “Katniss Everdeen” on.

Is it a license to print money like Hunger Games and Twilight or flop fodder like The Mortal Instruments or Beautiful Creatures? Guardians of the Galaxy (August) features a talking, gun-toting raccoon in space, so you can say it’s a new approach for Marvel movies. Then there’s Big Hero 6 (November), the first animated film

Jupiter Ascending ( July) is the first action/sci-fi movie from the Wachowskis since The Matrix trilogy. Interstellar (November) is Christopher Nolan’s first non-Batman film since Inception. His former cinematographer, Wally Pfiester, makes his directorial debut with Johnny Depp in Transcendence (April). So there’s tons of original content to be excited about! So long as you understand it’s all made by white dudes and that Transformers 4 ( June) will win the box office crown.

Oscar Predictions

People love to hate the Oscars. I hate to love the Oscars, but I kinda do.

Say what you will about their relevance, we still mentally note the Best Picture, Actor and Actress winners from each year and can recall them decades later.

As such, here are my predictions before all potential nominees have even had their qualifying runs in theater.

Best Actor — Chiewetel Ejiofer (12 Years a Slave), Bruce Dern (Nebraska), Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips) and Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club) should keep Oscar night free.

Monty Python is great in any form, even in a musical. And hey, since the troupe’s classic movies already contain hilarious, catchy songs, it was a natural step to translate the group’s signature humor to the stage. The musical begins with a narrator introducing a grand tale taking place in ancient England. Of course, the cast mishears, and the opening song-and-dance number merrily celebrates the wonders of Finland. Ah, Spamalot. ’Tis a silly musical.

Lionel Young, with the most metal-looking violin you’ll ever see, is one of the greatest oddities gracing the Boulder County music scene. With an array of pedals at his disposal, Young holds his violin like guitar and is able to do justice to the greatest axe-slingers to ever play rock ’n’ roll. Blues and more flow from his violin like dollar bills from Pacman Jones at a strip club. There are few cover bands like it in the area.

rrogant, stupid, sexist, racist, cowardly, delusional, talentless and vile: Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) is the villain of both Anchorman and its sequel, Anchorman 2, and nobody seems to remember that. Don’t believe it? He is a newsman who single-handedly kills the news this time out. And this is after he goes to a dinner with his new black girlfriend’s family and calls them “pipehittin’ bitches” to their faces. His excuse? “Well, to be fair, you invited me.” Thankfully, the beauty of satire doesn’t require the legions of fans who spout Burgundy’s catchphrases and ape his behavior to actually realize what they’re doing.

The first Anchorman was kismet, a collision of an unassuming concept and a talented cadre of comedians unafraid to go to the limits of humiliation. But what was a surprise nearly a decade ago has grown into a comedic bubonic plague: like 90 percent of the population has been exposed. So Anchorman 2 can’t just be funny; for most to consider it a success, there must be mass hysteria and public bowel-voiding.

Just like last time, the story is almost a nuisance. In the early 1980s, Ron and Veronica (Christina Applegate) are a successful husbandand-wife news anchoring team, until she gets a promotion and he doesn’t.

Because he’s shallow and petty, he abandons his wife and son to wallow in whiskey. Then GNN comes along and hires him to do graveyard shift on their brand new 24-hour cable news station.

Because he’s arrogant and stupid, he gets into a ratings war with a colleague ( James Marsden) that results in him

ruining the news and consequently destroying America forever.

What’s depressing is that the narrator has to explicitly remind viewers that the news didn’t used to be info-tainment. Once upon a time, average people were kept abreast of information necessary to the preservation of democracy and not “the top 10 vaginas of all time,” as Brian Fontana (Paul Rudd) counts down here. Unlike the first Anchorman, this sequel has a point: an indictment of the corporate news whores who have eroded this country’s collective IQ. The reason the racist, sexist humor in the movie is largely inoffensive is because the racism and sexism is used to make racist sexists look absolutely terrible. You don’t laugh at Ron yelling “black” over and over again at his African-American boss because the word is insulting or hurtful to her; you laugh because he’s the worst person imaginable. And maybe that’s why he is among the best comedic characters rolled out in the last 20 years.

Expectedly, they recycle all the jokes from the original, from Sex Panther to the epic news gang fight; but everything is dialed up to the proverbial 11, which was the only choice. The originality doesn’t come in the jokes, but in the decision to weld a rather tame and obvious point to some people (that news has become corrupt) to a movie that will be seen by people who may not have ever thought about that.

Not with a bang but with a shipping delay The Srirachalypse is upon us

t’s the sort of story the Internet lives for: In October, Huy Fong Foods, manufacturer of Asian hotsauce institution Sriracha, aka, “cock sauce,” was sued by its hometown of Irwindale, Calif., a move that threatened to limit America’s strategic hot sauce reserves and potentially send prices skyrocketing. In a word: Srirachagate.

Elation over the jobs and economic boost that the factory brought to Irwindale two years ago quickly faded as residents got a noseful of hot-pepper laden breezes and the fumes of roasting garlic the factory belched during jalepeño-harvesting season.

thing from coughs, sneezes and headaches to burning throats, watering eyes, asthma attacks and nosebleeds — the same sorts of symptoms one gets from a blast of pepper-spray — even miles away from the factory.

A judge ordered a partial shutdown of the factory until the odor could be addressed.

The lawsuit had the legitimate aim of addressing health and environmental concerns related to factory emissions.

But they were caused by hot sauce. And not just any hot sauce. Sriracha has its own cookbooks, a food festival and even a newly released documentary. Add to that the Libertarian hordes that tend to descend on Internet chat boards and let

the cultural shit show commence.

Facebook was rife with plans to start hoarding as news hit the wire. A blogger for The Atlantic urged readers to buy up Sriracha like it was gold.

Online petitions to save the factory sprung up on numerous websites. The last packet of Sriracha made went for sale on EBay for $10,000.

And — of course — a politician in Texas wrote to the company, inviting them to relocate to Texas, a state that would rather let a factory explode than regulate it in any way.

But in a twist that could only happen in a story about the Srirachalypse, Kevin Roden, a Denton city councilman touted local hipster cred instead of

lack of regulations.

“As the indie music capital of Texas and a city of 48,000 college students, Denton is home to myriads of Sriracha’s customer base,” he wrote in an open letter posted to his website.

Texas wasn’t the only state to court Huy Fong either. A city councilman in Philadelphia also lobbied for the plant, and a petition filed on Change.org was directed at Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, asking him to work to bring the factory to Colorado.

Well, starting New Year’s Eve, you can, thanks to the opening of Oskar Blues’ newest restaurant, CyclHOPS bike CAN-Tina, which will be both a boozeterium and a retail outlet for the company’s REEB brand of bicycles. And since we know you were wondering, yes, there will also be tacos.

According to a press release, “The CyclHOPS CAN-tina will seat up to 300 people and will offer up 20 craft beers on tap as well as 43 premium tequilas in the CAN-tina’s tequila tasting room. The restaurant will bring a little bit of southof-the-border soul to Colorado with a tequila tiki bar, handmade tortillas and a menu featuring fresh, fast combinations inspired by authentic and traditional taco-makin’ techniques.”

Cyclhops Bike CANtina will be open starting 10 a.m. Dec. 31, with a grand opening party kicking off at 8 p.m. at 600 S. Airport Road in Longmont. The party is B.Y.O.H. (bring your own helmet).

Odell Brewing Company and Head for the Hills have collaborated on a special re-release of “Head for the Hills – Colorado Amber Ale.” The special draft release beer will be available at Head for the Hills’ New Year’s Eve performance on Dec. 31 at the Aggie Theatre in Fort Collins.

The two organizations initially came together earlier in 2013 to partner on the special beer, allowing the public vote on it and select the custom tap handle artwork. The two re-visited the concept in early December for hands-on brewing experience at Odell on the brewery’s pilot brewing system and brought a film crew to capture the day’s events.

Brisket and eggs over a vegetable hash for $13 seem like standard fare at a brunch spot, but BRU adds a twist with a smoked shallot jus. It seems like an elegant dish and tastes like one too, just don’t look at it when it arrives. The dish looks like leftovers after they are tossed around in a to-go box during a bumpy car ride. Large poached eggs flank hunks of corned beef and haphazardly balance on top of a large mound of shredded potatoes swimming in murky brown liquid. In short, it’s ugly.

Fortunately, the harmonious blend of flavors in this plate make up for the appearance. The generous helping of corned beef brisket pulls apart with a fork and expertly adds smoky, citrus appeal to the entire dish. The eggs blend nicely with the jus, effectively cutting the salty sweetness that could easily overpower the other flavors in the dish.

The spinach, squash and potato hash provides great flavor balance to the brighter and saltier aspects of the plate, but the texture is off. The shredded potatoes unfortunately lose their shape and become overly soft after their flavorful swim in the smoked shallot jus — diced potatoes might do better at maintaining crunch.

A simple Americano with Ozo espresso is delightful with its complex flavor profile, and beats out the beer bloody for attention.

In fact, the beer bloody, though great, was the least exciting item on the table. Odd in a brewery, but expected in an eatery with an open kitchen and woodburning stove.

Simply put, BRU isn’t just a brewery; it’s a stylish restaurant with a diverse menu and a lot of fabulous house-brewed beverage options.

As of press time, only 12 people had signed on.

Most of the fervor had faded as the story dropped from the scandal sheets.

But it kicked back into overdrive this month with a new development: new state health regulations mandating a 30-day waiting period before uncooked, processed foods can be shipped, to provide time for testing, kicked into effect. Since Huy Fong typically ships its product as it’s manufactured, they had no stock on hand, meaning the nation’s supply of Sriracha is frozen until mid-January.

That translates to a potential disruption in the supply chain for distributors that could cost buckets and open them up to breach of contract lawsuits with the businesses they supply if they can’t deliver.

What seems like a funny story about hot sauce could translate to huge costs for involved parties, and hinges on a serious question about public health.

Whether or not any of that will actually come to pass or if it is just this season’s Y2K remains to be seen.

But some foodies are taking it seriously.

“We’ve stocked up since a couple of weeks ago, when we got word of a possible impending shortage,” Jennifer Saesue, the general manager of New York eatery OBAO Hell’s Kitchen told DNAInfo.com. “Luckily, at this point, we do not need to alter any of our dishes.”

Calls to several local food distributors to see if there is genuinely any risk to the Sriracha supply were not returned by press time, which could mean anything from a widespread conspiracy to suppress the truth to them just being busy.

But assuming the worst, those genu-

inely in fear of a Sriracha-less world might want to consider looking into alternative sauces. There are no shortage of imitators, many of them even ripping off the name and iconography of the genuine article. There are rival Srirachas available from other Asian sauce manufacturers like Kikkoman and Thai Kitchen available at most grocery stores, as well as house-brand clones from companies like Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods. Roland makes a remarkably similar sauce.

Then there are other Thai chili garlic sauces with varying textures and levels of heat, including the devilously delicious Sambal from Huy Fong Foods that is a sweeter, thicker sauce complete with seeds and chunks of pepper.

But if you’re the sort of person that thinks of Doomsday Preppers as a how-to guide more than a freakshow, you can take the plunge and just make your own.

Huy Fong never bothered to make its recipe secret, saying that while you could easily make Sriracha at home, you wouldn’t make it as well, which is a kitchen dare if we ever heard one.

There are only five ingredients in Sriracha and it takes around a half hour to prepare. A simple Google search will tell you all you need to know to brew up a batch of your own cock sauce.

And if your neighbors try to sue over the smell, tell them, “At least it wasn’t meth I was cooking,” and invite them over for some delicious stir-fry.

That fact is pretty well understood when it comes to things like natural beauty and access to outdoors activities. But it also needs to be understood when it comes to beer.

Dear Dan: I’m a straight 18-yearold girl, and I have been dating my boyfriend for eight months. He recently told me that he wishes we never had sex because he feels like he raped himself by doing it. I

n just five days from the publication date of this column, if you are over 21 years of age, have a driver’s license and are able to find a retail store open, you will be able to purchase marijuana for recreational use in Colorado.

That’s right. Though it will take some time for most retail outlets to open, as more businesses clear zoning and regulations and obtain proper licenses, a retail marijuana business culture will begin flourishing in Colorado and Washington. We will go, in one day, from allowing several hundred thousand medical patients to several billion adults who now will be able to buy marijuana legally here.

International media are expected to descend on Colorado to cover the dawn of the legalization era, and the eyes of the world, as they say, will be upon us. Early reporters will likely go away disappointed, and the first flurry of photos and stories about Colorado cannabis legalization might be similar to coverage of the opening of heathcare.gov a couple of months ago, with long lines in front of the few retail outlets open and complaints of shortages of product. It will probably be more whimper than bang.

But make no mistake: There will be a bang. This moment in history is being compared to the passage of the 21st Amendment 80 years ago this month, which ended the American experiment on prohibition of alcohol, and in a sense it is. Cannabis was grown by the founding fathers and was legal in the U.S. until the 1930s, when a tsunami of circumstances led to it being declared illegal and demonized in a haze of lies and Reefer Madness propaganda.

But it was the Controlled Substances Act — enacted during the reign of Richard Nixon, who rejected his own commission’s recommendation that

marijuana be legalized and instead made it a controlled substance with no known medicinal value — that led us to the current insanity and finally some reevaluation

by American citizens about its illegality.

Colorado voters spoke loudly, and now the world will be watching our successes and missteps, mostly the latter. There is still opposition to legalization.

Thirty-seven of every 100 voters voted against it, and we have witnessed pushback from city councils and county commissioners who have banned retail stores in their jurisdictions, which is legal according to Amendment 64, although some did it arbitrarily, without consulting their constituents.

For now, more cities will not be selling cannabis to adults than will be, and many, like Boulder, won’t have shops open until February or March.

This pushback will continue, I’m guessing, for awhile, but as legalization takes hold, cities will begin noting that cannabis customers in dispensaries are otherwise indistinguishable from anyone else. Those municipalities will also begin to notice that their jurisdictions aren’t sharing in the tax revenues generated by retail cannabis.

Voter support for cannabis taxes was strong.

Coloradans passed a statewide 15 percent excise and 10 percent sales tax, and Boulder voters approved a city excise and sales levy, too. A percentage of the state tax money will be shared with cities and counties that have retail shops, which should hasten the end of some prohibitions currently in place.

One of the smartest things about Amendment 64 was its strict timeline for the state to develop and adopt rules and regulations in advance of retail sales.

Otherwise, those in the legislature still against legalization could have slowed or placed roadblocks into the process. It put serious pressure on the legislature,

city councils and county commissioners statewide to enact regulations before retail shops open. So look for many adjustments and tweaks to those regs in 2014.

A major hurdle was overcome in late October when the Justice Department declared in a memo that it wouldn’t interfere with Colorado and Washington’s retail programs as long as businesses weren’t involved in criminal activities.

Governors John Hickenlooper and Jay Inslee asked the federal banking czars for clarity on allowing banks to work with cannabis businesses, still the biggest obstacle to legalization actually working.

Jack Finlaw, Hickenlooper’s chief legal counsel, said recently that federal guidance is expected in January that will give “maybe not a green light, but a yellow light” to allow cannabis businesses to take deposits, set up checking accounts, get small business loans and allow customers to use credit cards. Until then, be prepared to pay in cash for cannabis at any retail outlet.

The first legal hemp crop was harvested in the fall in Colorado, an early step toward ending the lunacy of the federal government banning a plant used for centuries in clothing, food, paper and building supplies because it’s a non-psychoactive cousin to marijuana. If you buy a hemp product made in the U.S. today, it was probably grown in China. Hopefully, as restrictions ease, American farmers will create a new hemp industry.

The Colorado legislature passed the first set of rules and regulations for retail adult sales that provide a framework for the cultivation, product manufacturing and sale of marijuana. It also passed a blood-level THC test for driving impairment. District Attorney Stan Garnett thinks it’s a good start toward implementing guidelines for cannabis impairment. I have my doubts, but let’s hope so.

Like all things marijuana at this point, we will begin to get answers (and ask even more questions) in the next few months. T-minus five days before lift-off.
