GMO questions persist (Re: “Behind the GMO curtain,” cover story, Dec. 15.) Thanks for the article on GMOs and recent Boulder County meeting. I’m hoping you can answer a question for me that was prompted by the Monsanto rep’s comments at the end of your article. Lisa Drake explained that the company does not regularly sue farmers for having Monsanto GMO product in their produce as a result of drift.

A recent Camera article referred to a 1999 Monsanto lawsuit against a Canadian farmer for drift. The article mentioned that there were others who had been sued for pollen drift, and that they joined with additional people who are liable to be sued for drift to put forth a class action suit against Monsanto.

Do you know how many people/farms Monsanto has sued for drift? Is there any documentation on how many farmers/ farms claim they have been threatened with a lawsuit for drift?

Could a drift lawsuit be considered a “pre-emptive” strike against farmers, to make them afraid of complaining about drift, or trying to sue Monsanto for drift?

Combine Monsanto’s ability to spend a farmer into the ground in court, with Monsanto’s precedence of a drift lawsuit win, and taking Monsanto on for GMO drift becomes a daunting task for most any farmer.

I wouldn’t mind seeing more in the Boulder Weekly on the “explanations” made

For over six months the public has been silent observers of advisory groups formulating policy recommendations for

reenwashing” is the use of shameless PR campaigns by notorious polluters to portray their corporations as benign Bambi-loving protectors of nature. But now comes “Greedwashing.”

And who’s in greater need of a greed bath than Wall Street banksters?

So, splish-splash and rub-a-dub, here came JPMorgan Chase with a holiday season PR campaign intended to scrub off its greed. The message was that Chase is not merely a bailed-out, fee-grubbing, casino huckster, but a generous philanthropist that wants only to benefit humanity.

Rather than simply presenting this image makeover in an ad, however, Chase created a two-hour television special on NBC devoted to itself. Called the “American Giving Awards,” the show profiled community groups that had received charitable conBoulder Weekly

open space GMOs. The Cropland Policy Advisory Group, e.g., sat at the front of a very large room, backs toward the citizens, without identification and often without amplification. Citizen-friendly?

Thursday night, Dec. 8, was the big chance for public input to the decisionmakers, the three commissioners. A huge conference room was filled to overflow.

County residents were forced into the hallway, unable to see or hear. Despite

If any viewers missed the point that Chase is not really a financial behemoth, but a bunch of big-hearted bankers who give away money, the show was spiked with eight 30-second commercials about the bank, plus frequent reminders that the altruism being displayed was “presented by Chase.” Well ... actually, this two-hour greedwash was also presented by us

signing up to speak for a three-minute slot, many residents never got to the mic.

An unfortunate side effect of public involvement?

Surprise! A Monsanto rep from St. Louis gets nine minutes to sing the praises of GMOs. So did other folks, from as far away as Maryland. (Some clever GMO folks figured out how to “pool” time into nine-minute slots, while the rest of us see LETTERS Page 6

taxpayers, for the cost of the show and the donations to the groups are all deductible from the corporation’s income taxes. Yet, we got no credit for our help. Probably an oversight.

But the cheesiest part of the whole fraud is that the total amount of Chase’s “magnanimous” donations to the five groups was $2 million.

Come on — this outfit had $104 billion in revenues in the past year and showered its CEO with $23 million in pay, including a $5 million cash bonus.

At JPMorgan Chase, charity really does begin at home, and its dab of trumped-up philanthropy won’t wash off a speck of its greed.

thought we were limited to three minutes.) Non-locals attended for free, sat in our taxpayer-funded chairs, spoke into our taxpayer-funded mic, effectively blocking local residents from participating in the resolution of our vital concerns.

This is unacceptable. We elect county officials, we pay county staff. Wholesale silencing of the public must end. We need more communication, participation, hearts and minds to solve our very real problems.

Consolidating power will not lead to creative and efficient solutions. It will also not lead to anything resembling democracy, of which we obviously have a deficit.

Boulder welcomes people from other places with open arms — as visitors and tourists. It has to stop there. No outsider should ever again be allowed to prevent one of our neighbors from exercising his or her civic duties and rights.

Perhaps a day will come when Boulder County won’t be known just for our “open space,” but for our “open government” as

well.

More on dog shelter I am writing in response to Elizabeth Miller’s Nov. 10 story about the Humane Society of Boulder Valley and their work with Sawyer, an Akbash dog (“Surviving shelters,” cover story).

I no longer live in Boulder, but I was a volunteer at the HSBV for four years and am familiar with their positive treatment of the animals in their care, their employees, volunteers and professional partners. I am flabbergasted by the slant of Ms. Miller’s article and the apparent need to stir up controversy about an organization that is known throughout Colorado and most of the nation for trend-setting and doing good. The insinuation that the work being done at HSBV is somehow elitist, self-serving or exclusionary is absurd. see LETTERS Page 8

he war in Iraq began on March 20, 2003, among protests that spanned the globe.

It ended on Dec. 15 with a weary sigh of relief as the colors were struck and folded and the last U.S. troops made their way home.

From around the country came a collective sigh, “Thank God it’s over!”

Whether any mission was accomplished remains for history to decide, though we can’t even agree why the United States invaded Iraq in the first place. There were no weapons of mass destruction, nor was there any tie to 9/11, as so many Americans were led to believe.

And yet for all the uncertainty about the purpose and the outcome of the war, there’s little doubt that it hurt this nation by costing dollars, limbs and lives. Those are costs we’re going to feel for a very long time.

Let’s deal with the least important cost — the money. Politicians and activists will disagree about expenses related to the war. The Coloradoan recently quoted a figure of $800 billion. But the figure of $3 trillion is not unreasonable. That’s the estimate reached by Nobel Prize laureate Joseph Stiglitz and Harvard economist Linda Bilmes in their book The Three Trillion Dollar War. Their estimate, which includes hidden costs such as lifetime care for wounded veterans, is lower than the estimate of $3.5 trillion suggested by the Joint Economic Committee of Congress.

When you think of the ’90s and wonder where the money went, remember that figure — $3.5 trillion.

But money is just money. It’s cold, dirty, uncaring. You might love it, but it doesn’t love you. The real cost of this war, as with all wars, is in human suffering.

More than 4,000 Americans died in that war — sons, daughters, husbands, wives, fathers, mothers. They left behind friends, spouses, children and parents who will spend this holiday season with a hole in their hearts. The war in Iraq will define their lives in a way that the rest of us can’t comprehend.

But American losses are a drop in the bucket compared to civilian deaths in Iraq. Getting an accurate accounting

of the number of Iraqi men, women and children killed as a result of Operation Iraqi Freedom is difficult, in part because the U.S. government wants it to be difficult. But Iraq Body Count, which collected documented reports of Iraqi civilian deaths, reached a total of 104,122 to 113,770. Those figures are in alignment with the Iraqi Health Ministry’s own numbers based on death certificates. The health ministry issued 87,215 death certificates for violent deaths but estimates that some 20 percent of deaths went unreported.

Sure, freedom isn’t free, but more than 100,000 dead civilians is a high price to pay when you didn’t ask to be liberated.

The war will go on for U.S. troops who were injured, returning without arms, legs, jaws, noses and eyes — the kinds of injuries sustained when soft human flesh meets IEDs. This war had double the amputation rate of previous wars, and double amputations were one of the signature wounds of this war. Tens of thousands of veterans returned with traumatic brain injuries (TBI) that will require extended care.

One particularly tragic injury that our papers have been loathe to report on is the number of men who had their testicles and penises blown off. A British paper quoted one surgeon as saying there was a time when he was amputating penises and testicles almost daily. To be a young man and lose your ability to enjoy sex and become a father must be beyond devastating.

Tens of thousands of veterans also struggle with the anguish of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Suicide, depression, and violence within families — these will last long after the last round was fired.

The official war may be over in the eyes of the public, but many of those who served in Iraq — and those who live there — are still fighting for a new normal, fighting for healing, fighting for their lives.

I would have liked to have seen more information about how CEO Lisa Pedersen has been working to create strong alliances with many local rescues and regional shelters that allow an increase of animals to be adopted in this incredibly dog-friendly region of the Rocky Mountains. I would have liked to have seen more praise of an exceptional rehoming/release rate of 91 percent (Compared with the 46 percent of released dogs in Los Angeles, where I now live). I would have liked Ms. Miller to discuss the incredible pool of employees and volunteers who make both the

Boulder and Longmont facilities shining examples of positive reinforcement training and behavior modification programs.

To lead a story with a sensationalized photo and title is nothing short of tabloid media and in an age of bad news and sad stories — couldn’t Ms. Miller have seen the 30,000-foot view that there are amazing local rescues working in conjunction with HSBV to create positive outcomes?

Animal rescue is difficult enough without creating unnecessary villains and polarizing people who are all trying to do the right thing. The work being done along the Front Range on behalf of all the ani-

mals is exemplary and really needs to be championed rather than maligned.

I applaud the small rescue groups and their dedication and thank goodness for the tireless work that goes on behind the scenes of most adoptions. Let’s celebrate that both Sawyer the Akbash and Trill the puggle have additional options to facilitate their finding a forever home. Let’s celebrate and tell the story that Boulder and Longmont have an incredibly dedicated and positive network of rescues and devotees working to channel animals into the perfect home. Let’s celebrate and praise the four-legged survivors who remain lov-

ing and adoptable, because isn’t that truly what we are all working towards?

I have been peripherally involved with Boulder Humane through another rescue and that experience has led me to stay away. I am a trainer in Wyoming, and now have my own rescue, so I am very familiar with protocol and the politics of the rescue world. I’ve worked with Janet Davis on pulling the Akbash from shelters, so I know she is not an unreasonable person. I have worked with Em Wolf too, and she is reputable. I am a small independent rescuer who operates much like Janet Davis does. My experience two years ago with Boulder Humane was just as bad as her recent one.

As a trainer, my rescue focuses on animals with behavioral challenges that limit adoptability. Two years ago (prior to my own rescue), I received a frantic call from another rescue in Wyoming. They had taken a difficult dog to Boulder Humane, under the assumption she would receive the training she needed, but she was deemed unadoptable after Boulder accepted her. It was the week of Thanksgiving, and the rescue had been given 12 hours to pick the dog up or she would die, despite bad weather and distance to travel to get her. Because of the holiday, temporary fosters were impossible to find and Boulder refused to budge on the deadline. My travel was 300 miles round trip in some of the worst weather I have ever encountered. It took me over 10 hours to make a trip that is normally just over five. I received a dog whose life proved worth the drive and the effort, and who excelled in my program.

Unfortunately, the rescue did not have a foster equipped to continue her rehabilitation. They decided to try Longmont Humane’s program. I agreed that if it did not work out for her I would adopt her myself, because she was a lovely dog, just confused and in need of some clear boundaries and consistency on her training. She was accepted there, successfully completed their program and has been adopted! I believe that Boulder Humane has potential, but they have plenty of growth yet to achieve. Boulder sets the standard for most of the nation on many issues; unfortunately Boulder Humane continues to miss the boat on this one.

The guy behind the protester TIME magazine’s person of the year for 2011 was not a person at all but rather an entire grouping of people the magazine referred to collectively as “the protester.” The idea is that from Egypt to Libya to Wall Street to Boulder, protesters have had and are having a significant impact on the world.

It turns out that there is a very real protester and photographer behind artist Shepard Fairey’s illustration on TIME’s cover. You may recall that Fairey was sued for using an Associated Press photo to create his famous “Hope” illustration of Barack Obama. This time around there won’t be any lawsuits. Freelance photographer Ted Soqui shot his photo of an Occupy protester for our fellow alternative paper L.A. Weekly. This time around, TIME has made sure that all the rights to the photo were secured before the illustration hit its cover. Congrats to photographer Soqui for a great shot, for which he will never get the recognition he deserves. Here’s hoping that the TIME payday makes up for the missing photo credit.

Iraq implodes on first day without U.S. troops Nearly 4,500 U.S. soldiers, 1,800 private contractors and more than 100,000 Iraqis died during the past nine years of the Iraq War. Another 50,000 U.S. troops have been wounded, and no one knows how many Iraqis were injured.

Earlier this week, the last U.S. combat troops — not to be confused with the last U.S. troops — rolled across the Iraq border and into Kuwait, marking an end to official combat operations. The end of the war.

Less than 24 hours later, the supposed nonsectarian, democratically elected government of Iraq began to crumble into chaos. A judicial panel under the sway of Prime Minister and Shiite Nouri Maliki issued an arrest warrant for Vice President and Sunni Tariq al-Hashemi. This has also angered the Kurdish factions, who now fear that the Shiites will attempt to take over the entire nation with the help of neighboring Iran.

It seems that tens of thousands of people paid with their lives for the privilege of spreading democracy to Iraq — democracy that lasted less than 24 hours.

A hard season for Boulder’s homeless kids

hile most kids this time of year are busy contemplating their impending Yuletide haul, that’s hardly the case for Boulder’s estimated 200 or so teenagers who are living on the streets at any given time. For these kids who are avoiding troubles at home or don’t have a home, the cold is a far more important issue than thinking about what isn’t going to be under their nonexistent tree.

“I don’t even think about that [holidays],” says Seth, a lanky 16-year-old who’s been living on his own on and off for the past four years. “I just want to be in a place that feels safe.”

It’s a simple wish echoed by most of the teens interviewed this week at Attention Homes, Boulder’s residential treatment, counseling and safe shelter for homeless, runaway and otherwise at-risk youth.

While all the young people I spoke with shared the desire for a safe, warm place to pass the long winter nights, the circumstances that had led each to be homeless were as varied as the kids themselves.

For Denise, a 15-year-old who moved to Boulder a few months ago to reunite with her parents, being homeless is a new experience. “I always lived in the same house my whole life in Cleveland. Then we had to move, ’cause we lost our house,” she says. Her parents came to Boulder in hopes that its healthy economy would result in work, but once they were here they discovered that it was simply too expensive to live and they quickly ran out of funds and became homeless themselves. Denise and her three sisters were living with a relative when she decided to take a bus and join her parents in Boulder. Now all three are homeless and stranded.

They have a place to stay and a better chance to start over in New Mexico where living isn’t so expensive, but they

need to put together the money to get there.

In the mean time, Denise spends her nights at Attention’s shelter while her mom and dad check in each evening at Boulder’s adult homeless facility on North Broadway. It’s hard. Trying to say good night in two shelters a mile apart isn’t like getting tucked in bed in another room. Each morning Denise takes the bus to meet her parents, and then they spend the day together at the library or some other place out of the cold. She says the hardest part for all of them is not having her three sisters with them. “It’s really hard on my mom and dad. They want us all together.”

kids at home alone. “We just sort of grew up, raised ourselves on the streets,” she says. Tina claims to be doing better now that she’s at the shelter. “Better” is measured in terms of living in a place that has heat, no violence and someone to wake her up in the morning and make sure she has something to eat before she goes to school, all things that were missing when she lived at home.

Tina’s mom still works but often can’t pay the utility bills. Tina struggled when asked what her wish would be.

“It’s hard, I do have this one dream, but it’s kind of hard to explain,” she says as her voice cracks and she quickly wipes back the uninvited tears. “My whole life I have this thing, where I just want to be good and go back to my family and have it all be OK. But you can’t go back, you can’t change it.” It’s a hard truth that no 14-yearold should know.

Mark, 14, and his sister Callie, 12, ended up homeless in Boulder after fleeing domestic violence and threats of worse in another state. Like Denise’s parents, their mom stays at the adult shelter at night and meets back up with them each morning. Aside from their mom, they describe a life where adults are violent, on meth, threatening and hateful, with a clarity and innocence that makes it all seem like a Disney film gone horribly wrong. Whenever Callie starts to reminisce fondly about their old life — a nice house, a back yard, toys, friends — her brother quickly jumps in to remind her that they came here to create something better.

Their fondness for their mother is continuously evident. To hear them tell it, she is the raft floating in a stormy ocean after everything else has sunk to the bottom. We could all learn from their unflappable optimism.

She’s also struggling with the idea of making friends, knowing that she’s just going to be moving again in the near future. She’s in school thanks to the folks at Attention Homes and has made a couple of friends there, but mostly she hangs out with other kids staying at the shelter. When asked what she would want if she could have anything this holiday season, Denise isn’t greedy. “Just my own shower and bed,” she says. “I just want to sleep until noon in a bed and when I wake up, say ‘Mine, it’s really mine.’”

While Denise doesn’t have a home, 14-year-old Tina does, but she chooses not to live there. “It was drugs, violence, chaos all the time,” she says. She describes being physically abused by her father, “beat for things that little kids shouldn’t get hit for.” She says her father nearly killed her mother, resulting in restraining orders, and eventually he was gone from the family. Her mother, now a single mom, had to work all the time, which meant leaving the

The

76-year-old man who calls himself Reverend Friendly walks with a shuffled gait. Old age and decades of heavy, indiscriminate drinking have reduced his mobility considerably. His long, white beard flows down to his chest, and his eyelids droop heavily over his eyes, giving him the appearance of being permanently sleepy, or at least squinting. A lifelong devotee of poetry, he’s a big fan of Friedrich Nietzsche, and he often repeats a favorite quote: “Slow is the experience of all deep wells. Long must they wait before they know what fell into their depths.”

He wrote his first poem while doing time in San Quentin State Prison in 1965, and he has haunted the open mics in Boulder for most of his two decades here. He doesn’t get out as much as he used to, though. A series of strokes during the past two years robbed him of some of the motor skills necessary for language, and he won’t wear false teeth, which would help him better articulate his words. When he speaks, he is often incomprehensible. His raspy voice, once authoritative and captivating, is now halting and laboured, and he sometimes has trouble remembering all the words to the reams of poems he has memorized over the years.

But when he begins to recite a poem — which sometimes are prosaic in meter and rhythm, like a story — he doesn’t so much speak as fulminate. His eyes sparkle and narrow, his voice regains some of its previous power, and his heavy, wrinkled face becomes animated with the power of verse. “[Allen Ginsberg] once asked me where I went to college,” he says, with the inflections and presumed moral authority of a street preacher. “I said, ‘I never went to college, thank God. I was in prison. I experienced the intellectual humiliation of a college education. I graduated from San Quentin Prison on the bay of San Francisco, where it rains a lot and the seagulls shit on you.’”

his way to San Diego.

“I got drunk, lost my train ticket, and stayed,” he says. About 10 years later, he migrated to Boulder, where he has spent much of the past two decades spouting poetry and drinking his way into jail, the hospital or the Addiction Recovery Center. He claims to hold the record for intakes into the ARC, numbering around 636. He would drink anything, he says, often vodka or whiskey. If booze wasn’t an option, then he would go for something cheaper — mouthwash, mostly. A lifetime of sleeping on the streets and in shelters and drinking heavily will damage anyone’s health, and the Rev, as friends call him, was no exception.

Then, five years ago, something changed. He was targeted for a program through the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless called Housing First, which identifies members of the chronically homeless population in Boulder and gives them housing with virtually no strings attached, just that they meet regularly with a case worker.

Studies have shown that it’s more effective — and cheaper — to simply give the chronically homeless a place to live, rather than to put them on a more complicated route to permanent housing.

The program focuses on the small percentage of “worst cases” within the homeless population of any city, the people who are “chronically homeless” — defined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) as either being homeless for more than one year or being homeless for four periods of time in a two-year span.

To qualify, Boulder program participants must have also demonstrated a disability, including addiction.

There was no question that Reverend Friendly was chronically homeless, so the program set him and a live-in caretaker up with a small, two-bedroom apartment off Mohawk and Baseline. In the five years since then, he has been to the ARC just three times, though he was recently hospitalized after drinking.

“Without it,” he says of the program, “my ass would be mud.”

Chris Byrne is Reverend Friendly’s case worker for the Housing First program, having initially met the Rev while volunteering at the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless before becoming a shelter employee. He has been around since Housing First got up and running.

“What we did was we took them off the street and then started working on benefits, health issues, stuff like that. Not sober-only, not trying to make you Amish,” Byrne says. “The only rules you gotta follow are the rules by the landlord of whatever apartment

building we can place you in. And by God, it worked.

“The alcohol and addiction issue — well, that was the result of the problem, not the problem. Rev is a pretty good example of putting the cork in the bottle. … He’s kind of a success story for this thing of ours.”

Housing First, which Boulder Shelter for the Homeless runs jointly with Boulder Housing Partners, Boulder’s housing authority, has 26 participants in 24 apartments scattered across the city. Participants pay 30 percent of their income toward rent.

The Boulder Shelter for the Homeless did a study of the 10 clients in Housing First’s pilot program, and it showed that detox visits, police contacts and visits to medical clinics all drastically dropped. The study also determined that the county saved an average of $15,553 per program participant over the 30 months after the program opened for enrollment.

The Boulder Shelter for the Homeless and Boulder Housing Partners want to expand the Housing First Program, and BHP has purchased a plot of land near the current homeless shelter, intending to use the land to build a 31-unit housing complex.

“In our proposal, the entire staff of the Boulder County Housing First program would be inside that building, and so there’s lots of case management contact, more so than if someone is living out in an apartment by themselves,” says Betsey Martens, executive director of Boulder Housing Partners.

Placing chronically homeless in a building together could ease their access to services and provide some social benefits.

“One of our challenges for our clients is that we take them off the street, and it’s terribly isolating,” says Greg Harms, executive director of the Boulder see HOMELESS Page 14

Jan. 23-24, Boulder County will learn more about its homeless population by participating in the 2012 Point in Time Homeless Survey, conducted by the Metro Denver Homeless Initiative (MDHI).

Organizers say the survey, which is now being conducted annually instead of every two years, has not historically provided comparable statistics because the questions and collection methods changed year to year. But this time, MDHI officials are using the same methodology as the January 2011 survey.

Local volunteers are still needed to help administer the survey, and contributions of personal hygiene items, socks and packaged foods are being

accepted. Those items will be given to homeless individuals as an incentive to complete the survey.

Organizers say the last survey shows that the fastest growing homeless population is families.

Almost one in three Boulder County residents earn $44,000 a year or less. That amount is 200 percent of the federal poverty level for the county, well below the sustainable local wage level of $67,924 to $89,474 a year. Here are some other highlights from the findings: • About half of Boulder County’s homeless population, 914 people, spent the night of Jan. 24 in the city of Boulder. Nearly all of the remainder spent that night in either Longmont (636) or Lafayette (160).

• Most of the county’s homeless stayed with family or friends that night (40.6 percent), followed by emergency shelters (22.6 percent) and time-limited transitional housing (13.8 percent).

Another 6 percent were unsheltered.

• The most common reasons for becoming homeless were job loss, reported by 36.7 percent of Boulder County respondents, and high housing costs, reported by 27.4 percent.

• Nearly two-thirds (61.1 percent) of the county’s homeless population reported having families with children under 18 years old.

• Serious mental illness, alcohol/drug abuse and serious medical/physical conditions were listed as the most frequent disabling conditions among homeless adults.

ising Shelter for the Homeless. “So if we had a building where there are other folks like them — an instant community — we think that would be really helpful for a certain part of the crowd.”

The proposal has riled some North Boulder residents, who say it’s unfair to house all of the services for Boulder’s homeless in one area.

The proposed site, at 1175 Lee Hill Rd., is directly across the street from the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless and blocks away from other emergency housing services such as Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence and the Emergency Family Assistance Association.

Concerned residents have formed a group called the North Boulder Alliance, which is urging the city to intervene and force the Housing First building into another part of town.

Alliance member John Moore, also president of North Briar Homeowners Association, says he is not opposed to concept of Housing First. In fact, he says, he sent a Malcolm Gladwell article (“Million-Dollar Murray”) on the subject to friends when he first read it.

“The idea of putting 30 units in one place is maybe controversial, but I’m also willing to concede that there might be good reasons to do that,” he says. “Really, the issue is one of density.”

He raises a number of other issues, namely safety and petty crime concerns, but he keeps coming back to fairness. Boulder Housing Partners didn’t ask the neighbors for input before buying the parcel of land on Lee Hill Road; rather, he says, the neighborhoods discovered BHP’s plans on their own. The entire city needs to support the homeless population, he argues, not just North Boulder.

And the homeless population does have an effect on the neighborhood, he says, and residents are concerned for their children’s safety.

“I’ve had stolen off my lawn furniture, and there have been break-ins and people’s radios have been stolen out of their car,” Moore says. “Adding another 30 — frankly, the most support-intensive people in the Boulder homeless community — is going to exacerbate that, and I think it could potentially become a frat house for the overnight shelter.”

Moore continues: “The proposed location is directly opposite the final stop for the SKIP. Many of our children use that to get home from school and the afterschool activities, or Pearl Street. ... To house 30 of the most troubled homeless people in the city on the terminus of one of the most popular children’s bus lines is a bad idea.

“If somebody’s got a 13-year-old girl who gets off the bus every day at 4:30, does that sounds like a safe situation to you? Would you bet your daughter’s safety on that?”

Harms points out that if you look at the Boulder Police Department’s crime maps, the North Boulder area is very low-crime compared to other neighborhoods such as The Hill, where the vast majority of Boulder’s crimes tend to occur. It’s also worth noting that registered sex offenders, and people with a history of methamphetamine use, are not eligible for the Housing First program. But according to the Boulder Police website, there are at least 11 registered sex offenders in Boulder who have listed their address as either homeless or as living at the Boulder homeless shelter.

ing on his own is a mutual agreement with his parents. He describes a life of divorce and stepparents and bouncing back and forth from one parent to another for most of his teenage years before winding up on the street. He once had a job a Burger King, and between his paycheck and some money from his father, he was able to have an apartment. But that was a while ago.

Victor has big dreams, really big dreams. “You may think I’m crazy,” he says, “but I’m going to run my own hotel and restaurant in Dubai.” Why Dubai? He wants to travel and learn about different cultures.

Being older, Victor has even come up with a plan to achieve his goals, which includes a stint in the Navy. But first he has to pass his GED and get 15 credit hours at community college before the Navy will take him. As with most dreams of young people on the streets, the barriers to Victor achieving his goals are money and education. And in his view, his time may be running out.

“The hardest thing for me is stability. Right now, it’s very hard for me,” he says. “But I just have to work for it, I guess. If I don’t, I may end up on the streets forever. Never getting off the streets is always in the back of my mind. I feel like I’m walking on the edge right now, and one screw-up here or there and I could be on the streets from now on. I turn 18 in two months, so I don’t have much time. I can’t go Boulder Weekly

back home. I have a lot of anxiety about that.” Attention Homes only takes kids between the ages of 12 and 18, and Victor is understandably not enthused with the idea of living in adult homeless shelters with those whose “time ran out” sometime back.

Like Victor, all of these kids have dreams. Seth wants to be an artist. Tina wants to teach. Callie wants to model or marry a rock star. Mark wants to be the next Tony Hawk. They sound like kids everywhere because they are like kids everywhere. They’ve just been dealt a tough hand through no fault of their own.

While most said they were just ignoring the fact that it’s the holiday season and quickly changed the subject, I couldn’t help but be a bit skeptical, as most asked me what I was going to give my 12-year-old son for Christmas. It felt awkward to answer. I felt too lucky.

I can say this, if my son gets half the joy from his gifts that these kids seemed to get just from thinking about what it would be like, then our holiday will be a success. I wish it could be so for everyone, especially the incredible young people who call our streets their home.

“We have met with more than 16 groups in the last two months and have been doing a lot of conversation,” she says. Information provided for a City Council study session on Dec. 13 lists 23 meetings with individuals and HOAs between April and December 2011.

But Moore says BHP has barely fulfilled its obligation to meet with the neighbors.

“We have done extensive outreach to Boulder Housing Partners since we discovered this on our own research ... and we have raised multiple concerns, and Boulder Housing Partners hasn’t changed their opinion on this an inch,” Moore says. “They are a public operation. They receive public funding, but they haven’t responded.”

Now that he has stable housing, Reverend Friendly is able to direct his attention towards other pursuits, like the Talent Show For the Benefit of the Homeless & Jobless and writing an autobiography titled The Transformation of Laverne Lobdell into Reverend Friendly.

Because of his impaired motor skills, he is unable to do either without assistance, and he is looking for people to help organize the talent show and transcribe his words for his book. It’s a significant change for those who know him.

“The chances of Laverne being housed, being alive five more years after drinking cleaning products … Who woulda thunk that he would have become way high-functioning again and have a purpose,” Byrne, his caseworker, says. “Reverend Friendly is definitely the oldest one in our program. … There’s a lot of support out there for people with health issues, mental health issues, addiction issues.

“There’s hope for the world.”

omedy legend Mitch Hedberg once cracked that Pringles’ original intention, given the weird tubes the snack comes in, was to sell tennis balls.

But when trucks filled with potatoes showed up at the factory, the people in charge of the operation cried, “Fuck it, cut ’em up!” Boulder Weekly’s attitude toward our annual “Best Albums of the Year” column has been pretty similar, considering the opening paragraph the first three years was pretty much devoted to debunking the idea that any art can be rated.

Thus, this year we’re going with a “Great Albums” theme instead. And honestly, putting the 2011 edition of this column together was more fun than previous years because of readers’ participation. Still, as 2012 beckons, we return to the fact that music criticism (which is at its best the painstaking, lifelong search for moving sounds) is an intensely personal, hopelessly geeky, and — more than anything else — subjective experience. So we hope this list spurs conversation, laughter and even anger. Fuck it, cut ’em up … in no particular order.

Deer Tick Divine Providence (Partisan) He’s got “a lust for life and a dangerous mind.” Yes, Virginia, rock ’n’ roll still exists, and that’s largely due to John McCauley, guitarist-singer-mastermind of Rhode Island dirt-rockers Deer Tick, a band whose raw sound makes the Black Keys’ sheen-covered El Camino sound like the Jonas Brothers. “Let’s All

Go the Bar” — with hilarious lines such as “I don’t care if you puke in my ride” — sounds like the Ramones jamming with the New Bomb Turks. And the mixture of hard rock, electric-piano balladry and literate, dust-covered midtempo workouts like “Chevy Express” truly bring together everything Deer Tick excels at on one record for the first time. But for the love of God, learn a lesson from Broken Social Scene for the next go ’round, boys: Not everyone in the band deserves a song on the record.

Tom Waits Bad As Me (ANTI-) Perhaps I’ve gone soft, but it irked me that, while the music was deep and fascinating, Tom Waits went almost exclusively with his most gravelly, abrasive voice on Glitter and Doom, his 2009 live album. Three of the first four tracks on Bad As Me, his first studio album in seven years, utilize that growl as well — and, though it’s usually tough for me to see it, there is surely beauty somewhere in that hellish whine — but the halfsee ALBUMS Page 19

dozen or so dark lullabies included here, and sung in a gentle, haunting croon, are unmistakable, accessible genius. To boot, floating above quiet-nightmare horns, devilish piano and twinkling guitar, lines like “We bailed out all the millionaires / they’ve got the fruit / we’ve got the rind” make me recall why I was so disappointed in the Fleet Foxes’ too-happy sophomore release, which also dropped in 2011: These times just ain’t right for singing, Nero-like, about how you’re as happy as an apple on a tree.

Paul Simon So Beautiful or So What (Hear Music)

Beastie Boys Hot Sauce Committee Part Two (Capitol) How many MCs from the ’80s are still relevant? These grey-haired New York legends are at the top of that very short list, and what’s possibly most impressive — aside from the trio’s ability to make excellent hardcore punk, instrumental jazz-funk and hip-hop — is its 25-year evolution from “I grabbed two girlies and a beer that’s cold” to more enlightened fare. Hot Sauce Committee’s two stellar collaborations — with rapper Nas and singer Santigold — are arguably its highlights, along with the addictive

instrumental techno-funk of “Multilateral Nuclear Disarmament.” But mostly I just revel in the musical Rapper’s Delight the Beastie Boys have been forced to conjure up, with help from Mixmaster Mike, now that sampling isn’t really an option.

Tennis Cape Dory (Fat Possum) “Should every couple that thinks they want to get married take a trip in a small boat together?” NPR’s Scott Simon asked of Denver husband-and-wife duo Tennis earlier this year. From all the pleasant, poignant sounds of Tennis’ debut, one can only hope all newlyweds have this

much fun. When “Take Me Somewhere” opens Cape Dory, it’s as if you’re on a boat with the couple, listening to their romantic, maritime-themed rock ’n’ roll as the waves gently rock their boat.

Singer-keyboardist Alaina Moore, a sailing enthusiast, told KEXP in February, “All of our songs are about being alone in nature;” Cape Dory’s mixture of antiquated recording techniques and pared-down instrumentation, not to mention Moore’s Madonna-meets-the-Ronettes-on-asurfboard elegance, make it easy to close your eyes and feel far away from landlocked Colorado.

Another old-timer — at 70, Paul Simon is eight years Tom Waits’ senior — released a keeper in 2011. Though his voice is now an old-timer too, the irreverent bounce Paul Simon made famous on Graceland is still very present in the delivery of his brightly flavored lyrics and zydeco-blues-pop-gospel tunes. Like a danceable companion to Bob Dylan’s classic Time Out of Mind, this is a sweet mortality suite. “After you climb up the ladder of time / the Lord God is near / face to face in the vastness of space / your words disappear … all that remains when you try to explain is a fragment of song.”

Enough said.

WU LYF Go Tell Fire to the Mountain (LYF) According to the Italian edition of Rolling Stone, this ecstatic post-rock quartet is “the cult band of the moment.”

Sign me up. Go Tell Fire, WU LYF’s debut, was recorded in an abandoned church, and the LP’s cathartic, echo-laden bursts of violent joy fall somewhere between Avey Tare and Explosions in the Sky. Self-described as “heavy pop,” WU LYF’s remarkable sound is drums and cymbals wildly quaking, tasteful guitars and organ building together until they burst like fireworks in the musicians’ hands, and cathartic vocals that are easy to understand … if energy, not comprehensible words, is what you look for in rock ’n’ roll.

Youth Lagoon The Year of Hibernation (Fat Possum) Maybe it’s the childlike reverie of the holiday season, but when I heard the cheesy techno-indie-pop goodness of Trevor Powers’ (aka Youth Lagoon) endearing bedroom masterpiece The Year of Hibernation earlier this month, I was hooked. No more than a squeaky-voiced college kid’s obsessive bedroom recordings, most of which regale listeners with tales of geeky love and lament, Hibernation only takes a minute or two to conjure dreams of a before-the-breakdown Daniel Johnston discovering Pro Tools. Powers had me at “I have more dreams than you have posters of your favorite teams.”

a world where the Adam Sandler fiasco Jack and Jill makes $68 million at the box office, it’s easy to forget that movies are pretty much magic.

But that’s the dominant theme of a new documentary coming to Boedecker Theater Dec. 26 to Dec. 31: the magical sense of childlike wonder that cinema can evoke.

The dreamlike, meditative documentary The First Movie, written and directed by Mark Cousins, takes viewers to a world far away from Adam Sandler — far, in fact, from not just the garbage of cinema, but its high points, too. The kids of Goptapa, Iraq, had never seen a film before, as demonstrated by their reaction when Cousins showed them a scene from the 1956 film The Red Balloon.

“When the balloons went up in the air,” Cousins says, “the kids started to grab up in the air as if the balloons were really there. They had no sort of ironic distance. They were trying to reach up to help him.”

Cousins traveled to the mostly Kurdish northern Iraqi town in September 2009 to film the children of Goptapa and have the children film themselves, distributing cameras to let them tell their story.

Slow and poetic, Cousins’ film captures a child’s perspective of the town, often using group interviews in which he, through a translator, asks the kids about life in Goptapa and what stories they’d like to tell. Then he weaves in the children’s videos. Some, frenetic and cheerful, depict soccer games and jokes; others, somber and direct, show interviews with family members affected by the Anfal genocide in Iraq in the late 1980s, before the children were born.

Cousins speaks from experience. At 46, the Northern Irish filmmaker recalls witnessing The Troubles, the ethnic and religious conflict that gripped Northern Ireland from the late 1960s until 1998.

film. “The answer begins 40 years ago with this wee boy.”

We see Cousins himself as a baby, sitting in a chair with his twin brother and crawling around. He draws parallels between his childhood in Northern Ireland and the Iraqi children. He says he included himself because he saw the stories as intertwined.

“I started to realize how much I was identifying with those kids and my childhood during the war,” he says.

Cousins says his childhood, like the children he saw in Iraq, was only colored by the war, not dominated by it.

“Even though there’s a war, so many other things are happening in the chil-

dren’s lives, like the complete freedom to roam, and a river you can jump in all the time, and the closeness of animals,” Cousins says. “In the film, they say, ‘We’re happy every day. We’re happy when we wake up.’

I remembered my childhood in a similar way.”

Cousins first traveled through the Middle East as part of a multi-continental road trip, and the region left a lasting impression — he says it was the best part of the trip. He chose to document Iraq because he felt a need to offset common conceptions of the Middle East.

“The more I spent time in the Middle East the more I realized how different it is [from the typical media depiction],” he says. He says he hopes The First Movie can illustrate that the region’s not as foreign as many think.

He also felt a connection to the children’s world. “I always felt quite childlike myself in my work,” he says.

“I’m always interested in enchantment.”

Which, he says, brings him back to film itself and its power to captivate the imagination. He and his crew set up Goptapa’s first theater, sewing together bed sheets and projecting classic children’s films from around the world.

“When the screenings finished,” he says, “the children would scream and dance and cheer and it was wonderful.

We were crying. It was joyful and fun and delightful.”

Among the films Cousins showed was E.T., and the children cheered wildly at the climax.

“My film isn’t a tragedy,” he says.

“I think what we see is the life force and sense of optimism in these children and their absolute determination just to go on.”

hen Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews and his band Orleans Avenue released their breakthrough CD Backatown in the spring of 2010, there were few outside his club-circuit fan base and the New Orleans cognoscenti who would have predicted how far it would take the 24-year-old brass bandleader.

The CD hung at the No. 1 position on the Billboard charts for several weeks, goosing the mainstream press from NPR to USA Today to The New York Times into breathless plaudits of astonishment. By the end of the year, Andrews was splashed across magazine covers, hoisting his horn on Letterman and Fallon and Conan, and eventually scoring a Grammy nomination.

It took a lot of people by surprise, including Andrews himself.

“Yeah, it really did,” he told us last week during a jet-lagged interview on his first day back in the States after a two-week blur of a tour in Europe. “We were doing back-toback tours for two or three years, just building up a fan base. It just showed me that peosee SHORTY Page 21

Andrews says that Backatown helped set a benchmark for their follow-up album, For True, which was released in September.

And Andrews is, again, bobbing at the top of the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Charts with For True. The album serves up sly, horn-driven instrumentals, like the scratch-track opener “Buckjump,” the lusciously arranged “Dumaine St.,” funk workouts like the title track and airtight R&B pop like “The Craziest Thing.” Galactic’s Ben Ellman reprises his role as CD producer, keeping the proceedings poised somewhere between righteous and greasy and capably managing the roster of guest stars (Kid Rock, Jeff Beck, Lenny Kravitz, a couple of Nevilles and the Rebirth horn section) that came and went through the studio for these sessions.

Plenty of the mainstream exposure that Andrews garnered for Backatown referenced his “discovery” by Lenny Kravitz back in 2005, when the singer/guitarist caught Andrews’ gig down in New Orleans in 2005 and subsequently invited him on tour. A little big-stage exposure from international stars never hurts, but Andrews was no well-kept secret to the club and street fair scene in New Orleans.

Born into a musical family and raised in the Tremé section of New Orleans, Andrews was pointed toward brass instruments by his older brother James and has been playing out since he was about 4 years of age, mentored along the way by cats like the Nevilles, the Rebirth Brass Band and The Dirty Dozen. (“Oh yeah,” Dirty Dozen reedman Roger Lewis told us last February, “He’s a special one … just a super-talented, gifted young man.)

“Y’know,” Andrews reflects, “everybody in New Orleans is like family. … These guys were all like parents to me; they prepared me for this moment. You know, ‘Stay straight, play New Orleans style of music, ’cause you never know who’s gonna call you some day.’ Tellin’ me things like that when I was 6 or 7 years old, I didn’t really understand it at the time. They’d come and teach me some things, like the Dirty Dozen would go out on tour and they’d come back and ask me if I worked on the things they showed me. It’s a beautiful thing. But they don’t treat me any different; they still kick my butt if I do somethin’ crazy.”

And what about his first mentor, his brother James?

“Yeah, I was just with him yesterday. We play together whenever I’m in town; I’ll play with him or he’ll come play with us.

“He took me on tour around the world with him when I was 7 and 8, going to all these big jazz festivals around the world. He took me to Cuba, Haiti, Saudi Arabia. … So he’s really been like my father, and he’s just really proud.”

winter solstice is here, and the season’s chilly weather has already driven most of Colorado’s flora and fauna to take cover inside.

We — and our kids — however, don’t need to be deterred from connecting with the natural world because of the cold weather. This year, rather than cozying up to the television on snowy days, try incorporating some eco-activities into your family’s winter routine. Boulder County and the surrounding area offer many kid-friendly, environmentrelated activities, and there are numerous things you can do right at home to occupy your growing eco-stewards’ curious minds.

Star gaze Clear winter night skies offer a valuable and educational opportunity to bundle everyone up to observe stars, the moon and other celestial bodies. For younger kids, it’s best to keep it simple — learn the constellations together in books or online and try to pinpoint them. Bring out a telescope or binoculars or simply use your eyes.

This is also a good opportunity to teach your kids about nocturnal animals, such as owls and bats.

Fiske Planetarium, located on the CU-Boulder campus, offers more structured opportunities to learn about astronomy.

The Planetarium presents lobby exhibits that are free and open to the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Monday through Friday and on select weekends. They also put on laser shows, live talks and star shows. Cost of admission varies from $3.50 to $7 for kids and $6 to $7 for adults.

Get out into open space The city of Boulder’s Open Space & Mountain Parks (OSMP) program is an excellent resource for parents looking for ways to keep their kids connected to nature, any time of the year. OSMP runs ongoing, family-oriented nature explorations, including one on deer Dec. 22.

Other upcoming events include sessions about bears, bird watching for kids and a winter wonderland photo safari. More information about the sessions and a schedule is available at www.naturehikes.org.

OSMP also offers nature discovery kits available to be checked out daily, free of cost, at the Ranger Cottage at Chautauqua Park. The kits come in backpacks filled with exploration gear, like wildlife identification guides, magnifiers, bug boxes, supplies for taking notes and drawing pictures, and a list of activity ideas for parents. This time of year, kids can explore animal tracks in the snow, look at snow crystals through a magnifying lens, sketch pictures and use the included identification guides to identify winter birds.

Ski! What better way to get your little ones excited about being outdoors and up in the mountains than to put them on a pair of skis? Eldora Mountain Resort offers kids ages 4 to 6 an opportunity to get familiar with being on skis and to learn some fundamental skiing skills in their game-based Eldorables ski program.

“The idea is to get kids excited about the sport through games and for them to enjoy the mountain and being outside in the snow,” says Tavid Bingham, Eldora’s marketing coordinator. The ski program runs in five-week blocks throughout the ski season. Young kids can look forward to working with the same instructor, seeing the same kids week after week, and get a valuable Boulder Weekly

You’ve been meaning to replace your showerhead with a low-flow alternative and change out the incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescents. Stop delaying and make it an educational and fun family project. The city of Boulder and the Center for Resource Conservation offer resources for community members to lighten their household footprint. And while you tackle the more dangerous tasks, such as swapping out cleaning products for nontoxic alternatives, older kids can change out light bulbs and take charge of recycling and compost bins.

Take a break from the cold and bring the kids to a tropical conservatory bursting with butterflies and a variety of plants and animals. The Butterfly Pavilion, located just south of Boulder, offers patrons a year-round opportunity to see, touch, hear and learn about various animals and insects of the land, air and sea. The Pavilion is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $8.50 for adults and $5.50 for children.

Plant an herb garden The remains of your outdoor garden may be in your compost pile, frozen solid or under a blanket of snow, but that doesn’t mean that nurturing edible plants needs to die down until the weather warms back up. Place a flower bin or a selection of terracotta pots on a sunny windowsill and fill them with a selection of herbs you’ll use for cooking throughout the winter. Put your kids in charge of watering and caring for the plants, and encourage them to help plan and cook meals that incorporate

Green arts and crafts Take stock of your household waste products before shuttling them over to recycling bins or the trash bin, where their final destination is a landfill. Many of the objects that we commonly throw away can be reused in arts and crafts creations. Some materials to keep around for snowy day projects include cardboard, ribbons and wrapping paper from gift packaging, bottles and cans, egg crates, coat hangers, milk jugs … the opportunities for reuse crafts are abundant!

that time of year again, the season for eating good food, and likely too much of it. Boulder Weekly asked some of our prominent local chefs for their favorite holiday recipes. Here’s what they came up with:

In Mateo’s kitchen: Braised Colorado Beef Short Rib from chef Kelly Kingsford of Mateo.

6 12 oz. beef short ribs 1/4 cup olive oil 2 large carrots, peeled and roughchopped 2 celery stalks, rough-chopped 1 large onion, rough-chopped 2 leeks, washed and rough-chopped Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 5 whole garlic cloves 2 cups Burgundy red wine 1 16 oz. can of tomatoes, roughchopped, juices reserved 2 cups roasted chicken stock 4 sprigs of thyme 4 sprigs of rosemary 3 bay leaves 1/4 lb. of bacon, chopped and rendered into lardons 1 tablespoon unsalted butter Set oven temperature at 375. Season ribs on both sides with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper.

In a large, heavy-bottomed pan, heat the olive oil. Brown the ribs on all sides, about 15 minutes total. Remove from pan and set aside on a plate. Add carrots, celery, onion, leeks and garlic to the pan. Cook over medium heat until soft, around five minutes. Add the red wine and deglaze the fond from the bottom of the pan. Reduce

Spicing up your holiday recipes for four minutes. Add tomato and tomato juice, chicken stock and all herbs to the pan. Bring the liquid and vegetables to a boil and return the ribs to the pan. Cover with aluminum foil and place in the oven for 2.5 hours or until the meat is very tender and falling from the bone. Remove the ribs from the pan. Pour the liquid through a fine mesh sieve and reduce the liquid by half. Add the bacon lardons and swirl in the butter. Serve the ribs over roasted root vegetables, soft polenta or mashed potatoes and pour the baconladen jus over the top. Serves six.

In SALT’s Kitchen: Forest Mushroom Caramelized Onion Bread Pudding from chef Kevin Kidd of SALT. 3 pounds bread, stale is preferable 3 cups heavy cream 9 egg yolks 1 tablespoon garlic, minced 3/4 cup Parmesan cheese, grated 3/4 pound shiitake mushrooms, sautéed 3/4 pound oyster mushrooms, sauteed 2 yellow onions, caramelized ¼ cup parsley, fine-chopped Salt to taste

Preheat oven to 325. Take the bread and cut off all crust with a serrated knife, discard crusts. Tear into pieces. In a large mixing bowl combine cream, egg yolks, garlic, Parmesan and salt until the entire custard base is uniform in appearance.

Taste the mixture for salt, noting that the liquid should be slightly salty, since the custard base will work to season the entire dish. Add the pre-cooked mushrooms, onions and parsley. Finally add the bread, working it like a sponge to soak up the liquid. The mixture should be slightly soggy, but not dripping wet.

Depending on which type of bread you choose to use, you may need additional bread to balance the dish. On the other hand, if the mixture appears too dry, you may need to add a little more custard base. Once the bread pudding is adjusted, pour into buttered 8-by-12-inch baking pan, cover with parchment paper and aluminum foil. Bake for one hour, or until you can stick a toothpick into the center and it comes out clean. Remove from oven, discard paper and foil top and allow bread pudding to cool for 5-10 minutes. This sets the custard.

Cut and enjoy as a side dish, or as a main course.

mong the guys in my high school, there were two kinds of people. You had those who worshipped at the altar of The Who and the Rolling Stones, devotees of high-powered Brit guitar rock. I was one of those guys. On the other hand, there were the tie-dyed Deadheads.

These guys would swap cassette bootlegs and would attend Dead shows night after night at the Oakland Auditorium. For some inexplicable reason, the kids in this faction were the student government types.

Our student body president would have felt at home at Minglewood, a new eatery primarily catering to a lunchtime worker crowd near 55th and Arapahoe. Staff wearing Steal Your Face t-shirts, posters featuring Jerry, and a menu paying homage to Beats and bands ranging from Kerouac to Jefferson Airplane (how Grace Slick could go from “Somebody to Love” to “We Built This City” still confounds) give this spot distinctive character.

Hot and cold sandwiches, entrée salads and a rotating selection of soups and desserts make up the menu. Sandwiches come with a choice of side, ranging from standard chips and green salad to more unique specials like sun-dried tomato polenta.

Colleagues Margot, Carin and I began lunch with the daily soup special, a $3.50 cup of vegetarian cream of red pepper with mushrooms. The mild peppery sweetness complemented the cream, and earthy mushrooms contributed meaty heft. Rosemaryscented bread provided a bracing accompaniment, and this soup wouldn’t be out of place at a more expensive, sit-down restaurant.

Margot and Carin enjoyed two similar sandwiches from The Fatman Melts category. Margot’s meatless $8 Annie Bonneau consisted of a pile of eggplant, caramelized onions, smoked mozzarella and tomato.

Minglewood staffer explained that while many believe the restaurant’s name comes from this spot’s intent to create a space for mingling, it actually refers to Grateful Dead songs. The Dead’s versions of the “Minglewood Blues” go back to two songs written and performed by the Noah Lewis Jug Band.

Lewis’ initial 1928 version, “Minglewood Blues,” has different lyrics than the 1930 iteration, “New Minglewood Blues.” The beginning of the 1930 version is nearly the same as the Dead’s “New New Minglewood Blues,” but the Dead further altered the iteration later with the release of the “All New Minglewood Blues.”

The onion’s sweetness and smoky cheese helped this toasted sandwich achieve flavorful depth, rendering the addition of meat unnecessary. This point was driven home by Carin’s similar $9 Lady with a Fan sandwich, which differed mostly from the Anne through the addition of capicola, Italian-style cured meat. Here, the capicola made for more of a seasoning than an ingredient, which wasn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Carin said the soup-like side of roasted tomato dipping sauce grew on her over time. We were less enthusiastic about the sides of vinegar-splashed potato salad and a grilled vegetable mélange featuring mushroom and eggplant. Each felt like it lacked an ingredient or two to round out the flavors.

I enjoyed a $9.95 lamb meatball panini adorned with smoked mozzarella, caramelized onion and a lively tomato sauce. The lamb’s delicacy, combined with the tomatoes’ brightness and the smooth-yet-

complex qualities of the mozzarella, made for a compelling combination that made typical meatball subs pale in comparison.

We finished with a slice of $6 orange ricotta cheesecake, lined with a buttery pastry crust. A bit of orange zest and the subtle tang of ricotta evoked a sophisticated take on the Orangesicle. While this sweet was unquestionably rich, it retained a definite lightness of texture, and would also be worthy of a pricier eatery.

You don’t have to be a Deadhead to enjoy Minglewood’s cut-above offerings. When you factor in that sides are included in the cost of their meals, their prices aren’t far off those of sandwich chains. Quality ingredients, careful preparation and a cheerful vibe make this a welcome lunch spot whether you appreciate psychedelic 20-minute drum solos or not.

OAK at Fourteenth reopens OAK at Fourteenth re-opened Dec. 14 in downtown Boulder, featuring a New American menu that highlights the flavor profile created

by OAK’s custom oak oven and grill.

Originally opened in November 2010, OAK had to close its doors just a few months after opening due to a fire. The restaurant used the opportunity to alter the establishment’s design, adding almost 1,000 square feet. The redesign also incorporated a private dining space.

OAK’s menu showcases local ingredients and changes seasonally, and is organized into shared plates, small plates and large plates. Shared plates include dishes such as wood-oven-roasted beef marrow with caviar and oak-grilled calamari. Small plates feature dishes such as Palisade pear and treviso salad, as well as ahi tuna tartare. Large, entrée-sized plates include items such as wood-fired Rocky Jr. Chicken “Under a Brick” and Fox Fire Colorado Lamb “Cannelloni.”

Local chef on Cooking Channel The Cooking Channel’s “Unique Eats” is featuring Chef Ian Clark of Centro Latin Kitchen and Refreshment Palace in the third episode of season four.

The show will air on Jan. 1 at 8 p.m.

To celebrate the episode, Centro will be hosting a Breakfast at Dinner viewing party on Jan. 3. The celebration will start at 4 p.m. and the episode will be shown at 7 p.m.

Mojo Risin’ again Boulder Beer Company is releasing its MoJo Risin’ Double IPA on Jan. 9, the ale’s sixth release since it was launched in 2007.

MoJo Risin’ Double IPA is an extreme version of the MoJo India Pale Ale brewed by Boulder Beer. The brewers add 50 percent more malt and twice the amount of Amarillo hops. The double dry-hop addition increases the grapefruit-like aroma and flavor, while the added malt raises the alcohol level from 7 percent to 10 percent by volume.

ith Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol, director Brad Bird makes his live-action feature debut, having made a name for himself and a few hundred million for Disney/Pixar with The Incredibles and one of the freshest comedies of the last few years, Ratatouille. It’s obvious but probably needs restating: Live action is a different beast from animation. Audiences perceive acts of violence and outsized physical punishment differently when presented with actors getting knocked around. At the same time, a great deal of digital animation today has effectively erased the notion of stylized unreality and sensorial distance. When a mole whacks another mole with a hickory stick in Rango, for example, the photorealistic quality of the image renders the act unfunny. It’s not slapstick. It just hurts.

The Mission: Impossible franchise is only partly interested in human-scale action.

Across four dissimilar directors, Brian De Palma, John Woo, J.J. Abrams and now Bird, the big-screen adventures of superspy Ethan Hunt and the Impossible Mission Force have put the “hyper” in hyperbolic grandiosity. Bird was hired by producer and star Tom Cruise largely on the strength of the way he hurtled through The Incredibles, bending the laws of traffic and physics. Reason enough, they figured, to enlist him for Ghost Protocol, which begins with a Moscow prison break, proceeds quickly to a terrorist bombing of the Kremlin, skedaddles off to Dubai and a break-

Not that there’s a ghost of implied sexual activity in this picture, which manages to be a pretty good time for much of its overgenerous 132 minutes. The closest anyone comes to doing something other than

ctors so rarely get paid to sit still. This week at the movies, as Tom Cruise is on Imax screens playing a frantic, hamsterlike intelligence gatherer in the new Mission: Impossible movie, we have also a superb adaptation of the John le Carre spy novel Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. Its central character, George Smiley of the British Secret Intelligence Service, does not smile much, or give anything away. He sits. And watches.

And waits for his adversaries, one of whom is a double agent working for the Soviets as well as the British, to make a fatal mistake.

Smiley is played by Gary Oldman in director Tomas Alfredson’s adaptation, and he’s on screen for nearly 20 minutes before uttering two words. “I’m retired,” he says to an old colleague at “the Circus,” also known as MI6.

He is about to be un-retired by the man (played with marvelous melancholy by John Hurt) called Control, who is aware of the presence of a mole among his ranks.

The year is 1973. (Le Carre’s novel was published in 1974; the justly revered British TV miniseries version, Boulder Weekly

starring Alec Guinness as Smiley, was first aired in 1979.) This is a time when news of a Hungarian general deciding to “come over” is able to create a rippling pond of betrayal, deceit, the revelation of what’s behind the erosion of Smiley’s marriage — everything that Shakespeare wrote about when, in Hamlet, he noted: “When sorrows come, they come not single spies, but in battalions.”

Reading le Carre’s novel in high school, I’d never before encountered such a murky universe in the guise of popular entertainment. Smiley is not for everyone; he is a diffident smudge of a man who happens to have superior analytical and espionage skills. Yet the coarser and more sadistic our pop diversions become, the more crucial le Carre seems to me today. He does not bother with turning spy games into delightful, larky escapism.

Nor is he especially sanctimonious about a man such as

running or jumping or throwing an adversary through the nearest window? Jeremy Renner, playing a blase IMF analyst with a cryptic resume, survives (barely) a round of ridiculous derring-do and then, referencing Patton’s mission to extract top-secret info out of a Mumbai zillionaire (Anil Kapoor, with a fantastic pompadour), he deadpans: “Next time, I get to seduce the rich guy.”

Speaking of running, doesn’t Cruise look like a flat-out maniac when he runs at top speed, those arms bent at precisely 90 degrees, eyes halfway to Charles Manson land? I mean, seriously crazy? I suppose I’d look the same way if I tried to run half that fast, chasing an adversary (played by Michael Nyqvist) heck-bent on launching a nuclear strike on America.

Along with Cruise, Renner and Patton, the team includes Simon Pegg as the upbeat computer expert, back from M:I:3.

He brings a welcome touch of levity. Bird has serious promise outside the animation realm; in Ghost Protocol he errs, I think, by shoving the camera too close to the bodies in the frame, so that the momentum and spatial relationships become awfully hard to parse. Call me old-fashioned, but I like to see what actors and their stuntpeople can achieve in shots lasting longer than the time it takes to forget Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.

Smiley, or his dodgy co-workers, all of whom have agendas.

The supporting spies include Colin Firth, Ciaran Hinds, Toby Jones (the greatest sniveler in contemporary movies), Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, Simon McBurney — remarkable character actors all, and together a formidable ensemble of muttering, furtive underplayers. While it was a pleasure to luxuriate in the many hours of the ’79 miniseries, director Alfredson’s handling of the two-hour edition of the story, shrewdly compressed by screenwriters Bridget O’Connor and Peter Straughan, honors the source material in its focus on the little things, the storm clouds gathering above the heads of its spies, and the light of truth dawning, slowly, over Smiley.

Alfredson made the excellent vampire thriller Let the Right One In, and his knack for brackish, enveloping atmosphere is rare indeed.
