oo many people are behind bars that don’t belong there,” declared a group demanding major reforms to America’s throw-’em-all-in-jail, mass imprisonment policies.

For nearly 50 years, politicians and prosecutors have pushed a no-mercy, “tough on crime” mantra, which has proven to be grossly unjust, exorbitantly expensive, counterproductive and needlessly destructive to families and whole

communities. “We need less incarceration, not more,” the reform group recently proclaimed. Of course, you’d expect the ACLU to urge a humane and just approach to crime and punishment — only this is not the ACLU. Called Law Enforcement Leaders to Reduce Crime and Incarceration, it’s made up of 130 of our country’s top crime fighters, including big-city police chiefs, sheriffs and prosecutors from coast to coast. These are officials who’ve built careers on the harsh, autocratic practice of police sweeps and mass arrests — especially targeting impoverished communities of color. They know the difference between actually reducing crime and posturing as “crime-busters” by hoking up charges and hustling thousands of people into prisons for minor offenses.

When such a broad group steps forward to say they were wrong, that the rush to prison makes crime worse —

that’s a possible sea change in policing philosophy. Indeed, they’re calling for (1) more alternatives to imprisonment, especially for addicts and the mentally ill; (2) reclassifying many non-violent crimes as misdemeanors and reforming ridiculous mandatory sentencing laws; and (3) a wholesale effort to repair the dangerous rift and loss of trust between police and the communities they’re intended to serve.

commentary CU Boulder workers demand $15 an hour and some respect

magine yourself a University of Colorado Boulder custodian cleaning a building. You are somewhat invisible in the swirl of campus life. You survive on a poverty wage and commute to work from a long distance early in the morning since you can’t afford to live in Boulder. One day, you come across the “Colorado Creed.”

The creed is on display everywhere.

It’s part of an enormously expensive CU-contracted public relations “rebranding” effort called “Be Boulder.”

The text of the creed is framed in residence hall common areas. There are brass building plaques at locations such as Norlin Library, UMC, the Coors Events Center and Folsom Field. It’s in campus promotional literature such as admissions applications, course catalogs and email correspondence. There is a painting display of the creed in the rec center as well as embossed flagstone sidewalk slabs in key traffic areas.

Here is what the “Colorado Creed” says: “Act with honor, integrity and accountability in my interactions with students, faculty, staff and neighbors.

“Respect the rights of others and accept our differences.

“Contribute to the greater good of this community.”

Every student, faculty and staff member is supposed to live by these principles.

Now imagine yourself an employee in CU’s Housing and Dining Services (the people who serve the food in the cafeterias and who are housekeepers in the dorms). You get a human resourcesapproved memo from Housing and Dining managers saying your pay is going up to nearly $15 an hour. Maybe the “Colorado Creed” isn’t just a bunch of empty platitudes designed to combat all of the bad publicity about CU being a big party school.

Unfortunately, CU’s Chief Financial Officer Kelly Fox vetoed the move and said the university would have to determine what the proper “market wage” is.

The Colorado WINS (Workers for Innovative and New Solutions) union protested. They represent state classified employees on campus. They want a living wage, not a “market wage.”

The union has started a petition campaign called “Kelly Fox: Live the Creed!” (petitions.moveon.org/sign/ kelly-fox-live-the-creed ) which calls on Fox to “contribute to the greater good of this community” by paying all CU Boulder employees $15 an hour.

Timothy Morrissey is paid $13.50 an hour at his full-time job at the University Bookstore’s warehouse on east campus. He graduated with honors from CU with a bachelor’s degree in English in 2012. He looked for work for a year but the “the pickings were slim,” and he finally got a minimum wage job at a sandwich shop. It paid less than the gas station attendant job he had before he attended college. He was $40,000 in debt for his undergraduate degree.

Three months later, Morrissey landed the bookstore job which pays better and has benefits. He’s married and has a 1-year-old son. He has had to work two or three jobs. At the moment, he and his wife have a small business working for several Boulder restaurants delivering meals to people in their homes.

Additionally, Morrissey is a full time graduate student in Information and Communication Technology for Development (ICT4D).

If that’s not enough, he’s also an active member of the Colorado WINS union. Morrissey says “unions provide an essential voice for workers. Wages are stagnating and a big reason is that unions are being destroyed.” He feels “a university should be a place of opportunity for students and staff. A university should invest in the community and in the people who need it most.”

Recently, WINS filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request with the state to get pay data on state classified employees throughout Colorado.

As a result, they found out that 2,586 full-time state workers currently earn below $15 an hour. They are disproportionately women and minorities.

The most common salary band is $1112 an hour and the most common low wage jobs are custodians, food service workers and childcare aides. Three see ANDERSON Page 8

Good for you [ Joel Dyer] to reject the “press pass” for the GOP debate farce [Re: DyerTimes, “Why I refused my GOP debate credentials,” Oct. 29].

To accept the deal to watch the debate from a remote location would be to acquiesce to a managed deal. The Republican officials had already limited the audience to the GOP-faithful with only a handful of students allowed in, thus guaranteeing a staged event with likely no dissent from the crowd.

You are correct in your complaint that the controlled environment of another room would prevent you from commenting on the crowd’s reaction to statements of the speakers, as well as the demographics of the audience. Were they predominantly white, older males that represent the core of the Republican party? We won’t know, nor will we find out about the reactions of the debaters to others’ statements.

I watched the debate and longed for the moderators to have a kill switch to cut off the speakers who went over their allotted times. I just wish someone could have controlled the speakers who went way off topic.

And, yes, the moderators could have done a better job to prepare and challenge the purveyors of lies and BS. But then, again, the viewers are probably used to getting their news from Fox News with little regard for truth and facts.

GOP debacle

Thanks to Joel Dyer for describing his experiences with CU’s bureaucracy

prior to the recent GOP “debate” [Re: DyerTimes, “Why I refused my GOP debate credentials,” Oct. 29]. Debacle would be a better descriptor for that contrived nonevent.

But, really, what could one expect from an event filtered through the bureaucratic artifices of an antediluvian such as President Bruce Benson and a bevy of regents, most of whom probably can trace their bloodlines back to the last Great Extinction some 65 million years ago.

Incidentally, the “debates” which we recently have been subjected to, and which will be foisted upon us in the coming months are not really debates in the traditional sense. They are moderated discussions in which the moderators’ thinly disguised opinions and penchants are as much in play as those of the candidates themselves.

I suggest that commercialized travesties such as those committed by Fox and CNBC be trashed in favor of discussions conducted under the auspices of the League of Women Voters. After all, we, the public, ultimately own the airways and cableways and we can determine the criteria under which such events are held. It is painfully obvious that the corporate media and their pliant hirelings are not to be trusted when it comes to hosting disinterested political discussion.

Xcel, in its recent paid advertisement in the business section, pats itself on the back for its work in reducing emissions.

I’m grateful for what they have accomplished. But their power supply mix is still over 70 percent fossil fuel. And they remain committed to running their dirty coal plants for the next half a century.

Unfortunately climate change is not waiting for Xcel. Study after study shows that we need to leave most of the known reserves of fossil fuels in the ground. We’ve seen the effects of extreme weather here at home, and we look at the drought in California and begin to wonder where our food will be coming from (see: “California’s Drought Could Upend America’s Entire Food System” www.thinkprogress.org/ climate/2015/05/05/3646965/california-drought-and-agriculture-explainer).

We can’t wait for Xcel to see the light.

Furthermore, with the recent spate of coal company bankruptcies, Xcel’s commitment to coal is tying us to a risky economic future. Meanwhile, Boulder is home to nearly 30 clean tech start-up companies that could economically benefit the community by engaging with a municipal utility. A clean-energy municipal utility would lower our risk and support economic vitality.

The recent economic modeling of a municipal utility versus Xcel shows not only that a muni has a much higher probability of lower cost to customers, but also that emissions driving climate

agencies hire nearly two-thirds (64 percent) of the low wage workers between them. They are the Department of Human Services, CU Boulder and Colorado State University.

At CU Boulder, 502 classified workers make less than $15 an hour.

Some of them depend on food banks to feed their families. Many have multiple jobs in order to survive.

WINS Communications Coordinator Olga Robak says that while the union only represents classified workers, there are many other campus workers who are earning low wages and that their campaign is for them as well.

Robak says the cost of bringing Housing, Dining and Facilities Management workers to $15 an hour would be approximately $2.3 million.

The university can definitely afford it.

Until Xcel presents us with a clear plan to get to 100 percent clean energy in a reasonable period of time, I continue to believe that the muni is our best bet.

Washington School ‘co-housing’ status

In 2007 I got 500 signatures to oppose the developer’s rezoning of the former Washington School. This effort was in the interest of preserving neighborhood schools. If 300 had been passed then, we would not have had to get 7-8,000 signatures citywide, but only secured 10 percent of those in the neighborhood. Then it would have gone to the ballot. What’s more, the developer had a covenant with the School District (SD) that said that if the affordability of the units was decreased, the SD would receive a premium on each unit that did so. As a result of our petition drive the developer withdrew his rezoning proposal.

Therefore he upgraded some units, those fell into this higher expense category and the SD was able to extract their premium from the developer. Why didn’t the city receive this premium from the SD, when they were the ones to absorb the impacts of having less affordable housing stock and more trafsee LETTERS Page 9

Chancellor Philip DiStefano makes $441K a year ($212 an hour) and CFO Kelly Fox makes $304K a year. DiStefano has had two consecutive raises of more than $20K, which is more than the yearly salary of an entry level Housing and Dining employee.

The union notes that “it would take a dining worker earning $9.50 an hour more than 22 hours to earn what DiStefano earns per hour and more than 15 hours to earn what Fox does ($146 an hour).”

Debate deflate

Clearly Christmas came early for the Republican Party at the debate at the University of Colorado. In what was supposed to be a focus on economic issues, the bumbling incompetence of the CNBC moderators turned what was to be a substantive exploration of how Ronald Reagan’s small government/ supply-side/ trickle down/ “voodoo economics,” against all evidence, might work to bring prosperity to the middle and lower classes instead into a free-for-all bashing of the “liberal mainstream media.” And trust me, the vast spider web of conservative talk radio hosts across the country are falling all over themselves as they dance around the Christmas tree.

Hillary, Benghazi and abortion

Innocent Americans were killed during the terrorism that took place at Benghazi and there are those who point their fingers directly at Hillary Clinton, who was the Secretary of State at that time. Some think she has the blood of the murdered Americans on her hands.

But let’s consider her blood-stained hands stemming from her support/promotion of abortion and how this deems her untrustworthy!

She believes it’s a “right” for a woman to hire another person to kill her unborn child. Oh, no, but she wouldn’t word it like that for that would reveal the evil that she really supports. She calls it a “woman’s right to choose.” Oh, how very deceitful is that satanically influenced nonsense!

“Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil, who change darkness into light, and light into darkness, who change bitter into sweet and sweet into bitter” (Isaiah 5:20). Yes, the devil is active in the wordplay used by Clinton and the pro-aborts. We need to consider how a pro-abortion mentality affects a person’s thinking.

The Lafayette flip flop; ethics out in Lafayette

Three years. I worked three years as a Lafayette city councilor to bring the city its own ambulance service, EMS today. The private service at the time was closing its doors. Now flooded with outside union money, the Fire Department with EMS wants to unionize. Public sector unions have been the financial bane of many cities and states.

But that is for another day. Surely the Police Department will follow.

At first, the city council voted 6-1 against the proposal. A current Council candidate, Cliff Willmeng, wrote an LTE highly critical of the vote. Praising Ms. Mazza for voting for it, he neglected to mention she is his mother.

Then the Council put the proposal on the ballot. That avoided an intensive petition campaign, a boon to the FD and the outside union. Required Campaign Financial disclosures itemized some $16,000 of outside union cash now pouring into the campaign. Thousands of in kind contributions as well.

Mayor Berg and Councilor Lynch now support unionization, along with Willmeng and Walton. The union money is supporting the four.

I have done local campaign mailers and the cost to cover the city is quite high. Also a savvy campaign ruse is to wait until after October 15th to donate and spend more because the next reporting period is at the end of the month, too late to expose other major donations.

Recommendations No. 17 and No. 20 seek to define large scale oil and gas facilities, where such developments can occur and increase collaboration with local governments regarding the oil and gas industry’s long-term development plans. The recommendations are an effort to mitigate impacts on and conflict with local communities.

Of the 50 proposals the Task Force considered, only nine received the two-thirds majority vote and were passed on to regulating agencies. Several other recommendations received positive votes from more than half of the Task Force, but did not meet the two-thirds majority vote requirement.

Task Force members Jim Fitzgerald and Matthew Sura agree that the understanding at the Task Force meetings was that any proposal which did not require new or amending legislation needed a simple majority to be forwarded to the COGCC for consideration. However, at the end of January 2015, just a month shy of the deadline for Task Force recommendations, Gov. Hickenlooper wrote a letter stating that a two-thirds majority would be needed for any recommendation to be considered for implementation.

“There was no vote on this change. It was simply announced,” Fitzgerald writes in his comment letter to the COGCC. “…The result was that several important proposals to give local governments more standing have not been considered even when they had as many as 13 positive votes.”

In the end, recommendations that received more than half the Task Force votes, but fell short of a two-thirds majority, were submitted to the Governor as part of a minority report but are not being considered by the COGCC for implementation.

Several of the nine recommendations that received a two-thirds majority vote received unanimous support by Task Force members, including No. 17 and No. 20.

The COGCC draft regulations are based on these two recommendations. “None of the people who were interested in something more serious were going to vote against these proposals so they got unanimous support,” Fitzgerald says. “But that wasn’t what we were hoping would come out of that [Task Force].”

No. 17 seeks to define what constitutes a large scale oil and gas facility, the procedure for local government participation in permitting such facilities and the COGCC procedures to site such facilities.

Many critics agree that the definition of a large scale facility in the draft regulations is simply too large to be near neighborhoods and are asking the COGCC to reduce the size by half. “It only deals with extra large facilities that industry can easily stop just shy of and completely bypass this rule,” Jones says.

Plus, the draft regulations only apply to a few densely populated areas along the Front Range and fail to address communities threatened by oil and gas development across the state. If passed, the regulations would apply to only one percent of land in the Wattenberg gas field, which is located in Adams, Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Larimer and Weld counties.

“There are only 14 locations in the last two years that have been approved that this would have applied to. It’s less than 1 percent,” says Sura, who is also the attorney representing Boulder County at the COGCC hearings. “Everybody, including the industry at the time, [agreed] this was an issue that needed to be dealt with statewide and now it’s being interpreted to only apply to a handful of locations every year.”

boulderganic Sara Barwinski from Weld County and a member of the Task Force, who was part of the sub-committee that drafted recommendation No. 17, says the COGCC draft regulation does not fulfill the intent of the Task Force’s work. “I was very disappointed that it didn’t realize the potential of that recommendation,” she says. “We really wanted to be able to say that wherever you live in Colorado, that decisions around where these very large industrialized sites [were placed] had some oversight beyond what industry thinks is expedient or economically most practical for them.”

In his pre-hearing statement, Bernie Buescher, Task Force member who also helped draft No. 17, agrees that the recommendation was intented to apply to all large scale oil and gas facilities regardless of location and suggests the COGCC reduce the size of large scale development significantly.

“It refers only to the Front Range dense areas where there is a density of houses so all of us down here who’ve been suffering with this [industry] forever just got excluded from that,” criticizes Fitzgerald, who lives in La Plata County.

Plus, “all they talk about is consultation, but they certainly do not ever give the local government the opportunity to refuse to offer a permit or turn down a well.”

On the other hand, the COGCC is taking the intentions of recommendation No. 20 literally. This recommendation lays out communication regarding oil and gas development between industry and local municipalities for the sake of comprehensive planning. The original language in the Task Force document does not apply to county governments but only municipalities. However, Jones and Sura both affirm that throughout the COGCC stakeholder meetings, every county requested to be included under the regulation, with the exception of Weld County.

“Again, the administration says we have to read these recommendations and we want to ensure that they are implemented exactly how they are written in the case of recommendation 20,” Sura says. “But in the case of recommendation 17, they’re misreading it and refusing to listen to how it’s written and implementing it very narrowly to benefit the industry.”

Jones says counties are completely disregarded in No. 20 and under the current language will receive no information from oil and gas industry plans on unincorporated county lands. and this development is most likely to occur on county, not municipal, land.

“This development is going to happen some place, presumably getting it away from homes and schools and hospitals is the desired outcome. Well, that’s counties,” Jones says. “It makes no sense for it to be crafted this tightly. It’s as if people are going out of their way to make it apply to as little ground and as to help as few communities as possible.”

Barwinski agrees there doesn’t seem

to be any rational reason to exclude counties from No. 20. “Especially when the intent is to avoid conflicts in the future, why wouldn’t you be sharing the information that could help industry plan and could help counties as well as municipalities?” she questions.

But despite the requests by counties to be included in the No. 20 provisions, the COGCC draft regulations only apply to local municipalities, greatly lessening the effect of the ruling on a majority of

land where oil and gas development is set to take place. This leads to an overall sentiment by citizens and local governments that despite COGCC outreach meetings across the state throughout the summer, the agency is not listening.

While this vision may be interpreted as damaging to the economy, Hawkins disagrees with the notion that environmental protection and business exist independent of each other. She argues that businesses should “maybe put economic gain aside because, in reality, environmental gain is economic gain in the long term.”

Hawkins cites investment in renewable energy technologies as an important step for a system with legitimate protection of nature, but she cautions that such initiatives will likely never solve the environmental crisis of our day and age.

“Sustainability is a word that is so overused” she says. “Its becoming diluted, and rights of nature can help establish real sustainability.”

Just as the festival will screen films featuring phenomena across the world, BRON’s call for communion in nature knows no boundaries. For Hawkins, the global call for action is necessary given the sheer scope of BRON’s goals.

“All of these things are so interconnected,” she says. “[BRON’s message] is about the global environment — nothing is isolated.”

While the Rights of Nature movement is centered on the protection of nature, Hawkins believes it would be short-sighted to ignore human dependence on nature — and human dependence on other humans.

“We need to be bringing [nature and human beings] all together and thinking about it as one big thing, with people part of that,” Hawkins says. “We shouldn’t treat people unfairly. We shouldn’t exploit people. We should be just and fair.”

Running from this Thursday through Sunday, the BRON Film Festival will also feature workshops on a variety of subjects from honeybee conservation and prairie dogs, as well as a performance by Native American grass dancers.

If seeing is believing, the BRON Film Festival is set to enjoy the acclaim of its first year and continue to engage the Boulder community in a conversation that is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.

change between the two drafts, other than reorganization, as admitted by the COGCC in a memo. Although the memo concludes by admitting that there is still significant “distance” between the regulations and interested parties.

Weld County resident Anne Harper says she was pleasantly surprised by the three days of stakeholder meetings.

Harper lives in the Pleasant View neighborhood just a half of a mile from Boulder County. She has been outspoken and resistant to the two five-acre oil and gas production platforms being proposed near her home and is a registered party in the upcoming COGCC hearings.

“This particular stakeholder meeting was very publically welcoming and it was the first welcoming experience I’ve had with them,” she says. “[But] it didn’t change a thing. So we did those three days and then the second version came back worse.

“They wrote them in this way that leaves the director all of this power, that leaves gaps the size of trucks for the industry to pretty much do what they want,” she continues. “I’m not saying take fracking out of the state of Colorado. I’m saying you need to be accurate about how you define a large scale operation in Colorado … I just want [the Commission] to hear and do something about what all these communities are saying, which is keep your large scale industrial fracking away from our homes and schools.”

Commissioner Jones says that although she started the stakeholder process with optimism, ultimately the process has been disappointing. Despite her sense that the COGCC staff listened throughout the meetings, the concerns and suggestions weren’t translated into anything meaningful in the draft regulations, she says.

However, Jones points out, the process isn’t over and the regulations can still be amended to address the concerns of communities. The COGCC website gives no indication of when to expect a decision by commissioners, other than to say the hearings may extend to the Dec. 7 COGCC meeting and the agency intends for the regulations to become effective as soon as bureaucratically possible.

“I want to leave that door open that commission members could actually try to solve the problem that this whole process was initiated to solve, which was to give local governments a more meaningful role in the siting of oil and gas development so that they can protect their residents and assure some level of confidence that their health, quality of

life [and] property values wouldn’t be negatively affected,” Jones concludes.

“The whole purpose of the Task Force was to navigate these kind of difficult situations but I don’t think as written it really gives us the tools to do that,” Barwinski says.

In her estimation, Weld County should serve as a “cautionary tale” to the rest of Colorado — a situation where an economic driver, such as the oil and gas industry, can sway a local government’s allegiance away from its own citizenry in such a way that threatens democracy.

However, she remains hopeful that the commission can improve the regulations and address the concerns of Task Force members, local governments and citizens.

“It’s really important for Coloradans to see that a process can work and not be cynically twisted around. Instead of losing their faith in government, losing their faith in the process,” Barwinski says. “Another unfortunate casualty is people’s disillusionment with government and with government processes and with who controls decision making.

That is very detrimental to democracy.

But Fitzgerald for one has admittedly always been cynical about the process, and the draft regulations only affirm his skepticism.

“The governor has chosen to make a mockery of the entire Task Force purpose and process,” he concludes in his comments to the COGCC. “There were many who chose to participate in that Task Force who did so with much skepticism about accomplishing a whole lot.

But I believe that even the most cynical of us never thought that there would be such shameless manipulation to ensure an outcome that had been pre-decided.

An outcome that did not reflect in any way the hard work and sincere effort that the majority of Task Force members put into this.”

Christine Nyholm also doesn’t share Barwinski’s hope. The regulations “are going to be what they’re going to be,” she says. “I don’t think they are going to be dramatically changed in the favor of homeowners or surface right owners. …

I don’t see, personally, that we’re going to make a dent. It’s bent on favoring the industry.”

She says that the draft regulations, as written, would not only allow Synergy to proceed with the plans in Wadley Farms, but the ruling would also open the door for oil and gas development in any neighborhood in Colorado.

“If they come in here, then no neighborhood is safe from this.”

And thanks to a successfully funded Kickstarter campaign, Christopher could afford to finish his project. On Nov. 7, Pause of the Clock, and a unique slice of 1995, will make its debut.

“I was very adamant when I decided to finish the film that I didn’t want to add any additional footage, I didn’t want to record any digital voice over, anything like that,” Christopher explains. “Except for some of the music tracks, basically everything that you see and hear in the film is from that time.

“I wanted [Pause of the Clock] to be a time capsule without calling attention to itself,” Christopher says.

What makes DFF special for Colorado filmmakers is not simply the work, but a chance for the workers to establish a community.

“I’m looking forward to the Denver Film Festival because there are a lot of bridges between wild stories and experimentation,” Sears tells BW. “My film gets to open up for the gonzo-seeming ‘Crumbs,’ and I can see a program of Nathaniel Dorksy’s work for the Stan Brakhage Award. As an animator and professor, I’m either holed up working with a project or working a lot with my students. ... I’m looking [forward to] meeting other filmmakers and getting a sense of other film scenes here.”

“There are great opportunities here for the film business,” Grossman says.

“Particularly, since about three years ago, the incentive program was strengthened and made more competitive.”

Cinema always has been, and always should be, a democratic endeavor and the Denver Film Festival is working to ensure that the grassroots aspects of Colorado’s film scene develop and take off.

Consummate indie pioneers embrace history as they forge ahead

ver fantasize about being somebody else or doing something else with your life? James McNew, longtime bassist for indie rock grandees Yo la Tengo, doesn’t know what the hell you’re talking about. “I think this is what we all wanted to be,” says McNew, speaking for the band.

“Zero regrets.”

Who could blame him? Yo la Tengo has been defining and setting the standard for indie music since the mid ’80s with their first full-length, Ride the Tiger. Thirty years and 13 albums later, Yo la Tengo is back with their latest, Stuff Like That There.

BETC’s latest production jackknifes

L

oneliness, one of the most elemental of emotions and an inextricable part of the human experience, serves as the basis for, or at least informs, much great art. Think of the solitary figure in Edvard Munch’s haunting The Scream. Or watch Christian Bale descend into isolated, emaciated madness in The Machinist. Or marvel at the subjective hell of JeanPaul Sartre’s No Exit. Or nod your head knowingly to Jimi Hendrix singing that “loneliness is such a drag.”

Like love, sorrow, wonder and joy, loneliness may serve as excellent inspiration for art. Translating that inspiration into a superlative final product, however, is no easy feat. In the context of live theater, it requires the playwright, the director and the actors — among others — to excel individually in order to astound collectively.

The Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company (BETC) achieves this difficult, lofty goal the vast majority of the time. During the past decade or so that I have been reviewing BETC productions, I can count on one hand the instances when I was underwhelmed or disappointed. Unfortunately, The Few tops that very short list.

Set in 1999 for no particularly compelling reason, The Few, an alleged meditation on and explication of loneliness, features three characters and one location. The location is a rundown office in a trailer off of I-90 in northern Idaho. The office is the home of the titular trucker-centric newspaper. QZ (Lindsey Pierce) runs the paper. Nineteen-year-old Matthew ( John Hauser) is QZ’s sole employee. The play opens with the unheralded return of the paper’s owner, and QZ’s former lover, Bryan (Michael Morgan).

Four years earlier, following the traumatic loss of one of QZ and Bryan’s closest friends, Bryan disappeared without a word or a trace. During his absence, QZ took what was essentially a loose collection of

It’s called a port, a harbor, haven, home, a city on the coast of my chest opened for a passage into my heart—which we say is where emotions live—and it’s embedded, slipped into a shallow nest of flesh, a bump, a lump under the skin on the right so the narrow street can reach the marketplace of the aorta, receptive to any incoming ship, needle, boat, barge, unloading its spices, crates of dates, barrels of poisons, Etoposide phosphate, amethyst, amaranth, Cisplatin, amphorae of wine and olives.

I carry it secretly under my skin because it is easier. I carry everything under my skin, so lightly I barely notice, watching from the ramparts the dangerous rocky anchorage below where goods and evils, bundled together and tied, arrive, waiting to be unloaded and poured out into a welcoming country.

The complete joylessness of ‘I Smile Back’

He patiently explains that loving the pet and losing the pet is a part of life, a part that they will have to confront, like it or not. He is sympathetic. He knows that she is in the clutches of depression and despair, but he believes that he might be able to love her enough to make everything better. What he doesn’t know is that after his wife dropped the kids off at school, she went to a neighbor’s house and snorted several lines of cocaine before letting the neighbor sodomize her.

Surfaces can be deceiving.

Laney then goes downstairs to prepare sack lunches for her kid’s, drinks a bottle of vodka, calls a fellow parent to scream at her, does a little more coke and then wanders into her daughter’s room and proceeds to masturbate with her daughter’s teddy bear while her daughter sleeps a foot or two away. After Laney climaxes, she breaks down in tears.

And this is just the first 15 or so minutes of I Smile Back, an 85-minute joyless slog through rock bottom after rock bottom. Unfortunately, the business with the bear In I Smile Back Sarah Silverman is sad, sad, sad, but lacks comes early in the movie, much depth underneath that. meaning that after Laney admits she has a problem and checks into rehab it is only a matter of time until she relapses, and relapses hard. There isn’t any suspense to it; just a question of how hard she’ll hit the ground.

Not every movie needs a happy ending, nor should we expect one, but movies should offer some sort of insight for the viewer. In the case of I Smile Back, there is no insight, just the endurance contest of watching a woman with mental illness and addiction. Director Adam Salky seems content with simply sitting back and watching the trainwreck, which kind of makes Silverman’s performance seem brave, but it is so stripped clean of any pretense that it never manages to engage.

Silverman is a phenomenal performer, but even the best performances require direction. Case in point: Silverman’s excellent supporting role as an alcoholic mother in Sarah Polley’s criminally under-seen Take this Waltz.

With no release or catharsis, I Smile Back finds no joy in existence and no reason to go on living. Why sober up in a world this miserable and vapid? I Smile Back is set in an New York suburb filled with white people, white houses, white cabinets, white walls and pure white snow covering everything else. In the middle of all this shocking whiteness, stands Sarah Silverman, with her jet-black hair, a broken version of her Jewish comedian persona in an cookie cutter world. There are lots of reasons that people don’t fit in a particular world, but if that is all I Smile Back’s got, then it doesn’t amount to a hill of beans.

ou aren’t likely to stumble upon this place. From the outside, In Season Local Market in North Boulder looks like it could sell solar panels or dog food as much as it looks like what it actually is: a simple market with every type of grain and seed for sale, with an easy-going style of service and a simple, cheap deli.

In Season has three walls full of whole and crushed grains, seeds, flours, nuts and other base elements. There are five different types of chia seeds, and you can get about two dozen varieties of regular, old white flour. Bags of ancient grains and traditional grains sit beside one another on the shelves, and if you don’t know what to do with them, a store clerk will help you out or else point you to a stack of books in the store that you can take to one of the big farmhouse tables in the center of the store.

Aside from the ingredient stock, In Season also has a variable deli that serves sandwiches, soups and smoothies based on what is… in season. It’s all written up on a chalkboard, and everything is assembled and cooked by hand when it’s ordered, so when I order a whole bunch of stuff, I sit and wait at the table and drink some of the complimentary tea.

There’s an iced fruit-infused chai and a hot pot of something purple, so I sip a little of both and regard the chalkboard.

In the upper-left corner, away from the day’s menu items is the Rumi Corner, a daily quote from Rumi, a 13th century Islamic scholar. It read, “How

The toasted lavash had a deep, rye-like flavor and, as mentioned previously, toasted In Season Local extremely well and sturdy. CELEBRATE CHEESE The seventh annual Colorado Cheese Festival is coming to Longmont on Sunday, Nov. 8 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Plaza Convention Center.

The price of admission is $35, but that covers all the cheese samples you can handle. There will be about 35 local cheese and cheese-related vendors at the festival, including Cheese Importers, Haystack Mountain Goat Dairy, Rogue Creamery, Sartori Cheese, Ugly Goat Milk Dairy and many more.

In addition to the tastings, there will be events throughout the day. At 10 a.m., and again at 1:30 p.m., The Art of Cheese and Haystack Mountain Goat Dairy will be teaching a class entitled “Goat Cheese 101: Chèvre and Beyond!” At 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., you can learn how to make mozzarella at home from the folks at Wine and Whey.

There will also be a fondue class at 12:30 p.m.

WHITE TRUFFLE AND BAROLO WINE DINNER Frasca Food and Wine is hosting their ninth annual White Truffle and Barolo Dinners on Dec. 7 and 8 at 6:30 p.m. on each night.

According to Frasca: “Italian white truffles imported directly from Italy during peak truffle season will serve as the star of the menu, with fresh truffles being shaved tableside throughout the evening. Master Sommelier Bobby Stuckey will also be on-

Guest chef Mark Ladner, chef at the acclaimed Del Posto restaurant and the 2015 James Beard Award winner for best chef in New York City, will join Frasca chef Lachlan Mackinnon-Patterson and chef di cucina, Ian Wortham.

Now, this all comes at a price, so don’t get mad. Consider it a holiday present to yourself. Tickets are — brace yourself — $970, per person, not including tax and gratuity, and a 50 percent deposit will be required at the time of booking.

TWISTED PINE RELEASE Boulder’s Twisted Pine Brewing Company will release it’s annual winter brew, the Northstar Imperial Porter, at a party at the brewery on Friday, Nov. 13.

The event will be celebrated with a sixvintage vertical tasting of the Northstar the day before the party — you can purchase tickets, which are going quickly, from the brewery’s website.

The Northstar Imperial Porter, according to the brewery, is “rich and robust,” and at 9.5 percent ABV, it is “an exemplary winter warmer.” It has won a World Beer Cup, two European Beer Star awards and holds a 97 rating on RateBeer.com. It also ages well in the cellar.

The charcuterie board is at once an expression of taste and exercise in fun

T

here is not much better in the culinary world than a well-assembled charcuterie board. It is as ideal for entertaining as it is for sampling local fare in a new city, particularly abroad. It can be a creative snack or a full meal depending on the design. More than anything though, the charcuterie board is a palette of foodstuffs that says a lot about the tastes of the person who designed it.

The core of what makes the charcuterie plate great has been lost a little bit in recent years. It’s become a trendy, Instagram-able plate of food that more often reflects solely the aesthetic tastes of the board curator.

To each his or her own, but the joy of assembling the charcuterie plate for me lies in complementing and contrasting taste, smell, texture, temperature, size and more in addition to the prettiness of it.

That said, charcuterie should be fun. We’re talking about cured meats and sausages, cheeses, terrines, pâté, confit, fruits, breads, nuts and more. You needn’t spend a lot of money or time to acquire enough of those items to put together a board, nor should you have to drop a lot of money at a restaurant for its boards. Whether you want Hormel pepperoni or jamón ibérico de bellota is your call. Heck, Lunchables were nothing more than a children’s charcuterie plate if you think about it.

So given that the charcuterie plate should reflect your personal taste, there are a couple anchor categories that you should think about having on the plate: cured whole muscle, cured sausage, a pâté or terrine, hard and soft cheese, a crispy starch, some form of fruit or sweet jam, and then anything else you feel compelled to throw on there.

But the first place to start is the board. You’re likely to find a lot of creative reclaimed and refinished

wood boards of varying sizes throughout Boulder County — local places like Cheese Importers in Longmont or Cured in Boulder will have some, and so will chains like Williams-Sonoma and Sur la Table.

A wood board will absorb all the oils from your meats and cheeses, which will wear it in over time in an organic way — though you should probably still wash it after each use. Conversely, you’ll want to get a board

that has been finished with food-friendly oils. You can also work with other board surfaces like marble, granite or even a salt slab.

When it comes to selecting your meats and cheeses, the best course of action is to head down to a charcuterie and cheese purveyor like Cured, Cheese Importers, Blackbelly Market, or just to your local grocer’s deli section — King Sooper’s and Whole Foods have surprisingly large selections of cured meats and cheese. There, you can pick the brains of the cheese, charcuterie and salumi (Italian cured meats) experts both on individual food items and on the direction of your board as a whole.

Starting with the first major category for your board, cured whole muscles, you’ll have a lot of options. Prosciutto, specifically those from Parma and San Daniele, are the cream of the crop for Italian cured pork meats. Or, from Spain, you can splurge on the jamón ibérico. Both items are dry cured from the ham, or hind leg, of the pig, anywhere from a couple months to a year. When curing is complete, the prosciutto or jamón is sliced from the leg fresh, and great care is usually put into maintaining the larger cured ham. On the cheaper side, you can find decent prosciutto prepackaged by the slice from reputable American producers like Creminelli. Other whole muscles you could consider for your plate are pancetta (pork belly), speck (spiced and smoked prosciutto), coppa or capicola (pork neck), bresaola (dry cured beef top round) and duck prosciutto.

The next category you’ll want to poke around in is cured sausages. These are your salami and saucissons.

Applejack is perfect for November and tells an intriguing tale to boot

N

ow is the time for applejack. It is the perfect liquor to ease you from fall into winter. With a strong punch, a hint of apple and a compelling story to boot, it’s worth the $20 investment to a buy a bottle, stoke a fire and think about George Washington.

Applejack is a spirit born out of the American colonies. The primitive process of making applejack involved fermenting apple cider, usually with sweet apples plucked in the fall, and freezing the fermented cider underground, then separating the resulting ice from the now highly alcohol-concentrated drink; a process called freeze distilling. If it sounds easy and appealing, think twice; you can get some real bogus liquor through this process so leave it to the colonists. Tastewise, it’s essentially apple brandy, and will taste similar to something like Calvados.

But the fascination about applejack exists because it was once the favorite drink of early Americans, and now you hardly see it.

Communities were making their Matt Cortina jacked-up hooch for years before “mass” production of applejack started in New Jersey with Laird’s Applejack Company — the country’s first distillery. One of the earliest Lairds, who came from Scotland in 1698, started selling their applejack at their family-run Colts Neck Inn to travelers. In 1760, George Washington wrote to the Lairds for the recipe, and an entry in the future president’s journal includes the recipe for “cyder spirits.”

In 1780, Robert Laird (who served in the Revolutionary War under Washington) officially founded the applejack distillery on behalf of his family. Johnny Appleseed also planted apple tree saplings designed to produce fruit not for eating, but for making applejack in the Ohio Valley, ahead of westward expansion, according to the drink encyclopedia, Alcohol in Popular Culture by Rachel Black.

Despite moving a number of times throughout the Garden State, Laird’s Applejack is still available today, and it’s just about the only distiller that makes the spirit. It lost its appeal pretty quickly as the now-quintessential American spirits, rye and Bourbon whiskey took hold. It then hung on for dear life in the 20th century, slanderized with the nickname “Jersey Lightning,” which now actually sounds pretty cool.

Now, 300 years later you can pick up a bottle of Laird’s Applejack in Boulder — though the apples used are grown and distilled in Virginia, the company still has several business locations in New Jersey.

Given the illustrious history of America’s oldest spirit, it’s worth a try even if hard liquor isn’t your thing. And to be honest, applejack is a bit like drinking moonshine with a splash of apple juice. It’s potency and relative sweetness was actually the main reason why it was so valued in the colonial world — they valued the bang for their buck just like we do today.

But if sipping it doesn’t work, you can whip up a couple cocktails with the spirit. None is more common than the Jack Rose, a mix of applejack, lemon juice, grenadine and an optional splash of egg white for consistency. The acidic lemon juice and sweet grenadine balance the applejack for a really nice November sipper.

You can also replace the whiskeys in the Old Fashioned and the Manhattan with applejack for a sweeter, harder taste. Or you can do what George Washington did: chugged a bottle, crossed the Delaware and won us a country. So thanks, applejack, and thanks, New Jersey, for saving our country.

DEAR READERS: Two weeks ago, I announced I would be taking a nice long break from questions about miserable sexless marriages. (I don’t get questions about happily sexless marriages.) I tossed out my standard line of advice to those who’ve exhausted medical, psychological, and situational fixes (“Do what you need to do to stay married and stay sane”), and I moved on to other relationship problems. Readers impacted by sexless marriages — men and women on “both sides of the bed” — wrote in to share their experiences and insights.

I’ve decided to let them have the last word on the subject.

Dear Dan: Since you don’t want to give any more advice to readers stuck in sexually unfulfilling marriages they can’t or don’t want to end, will you allow me to give a little advice from the perspective of the other woman, i.e., the person who makes it possible for them to “stay married and stay sane”? I contacted an old flame when my marriage ended. He was married. His wife refused to have sex with him but also expected him to stay faithful to her. Their kids were still in school. Council needs to clarify the ‘incidental advertising’ issue

hat a long, strange trip it’s become, even though it’s just been a little more than a month.

Boulder City Council decided to take a look at its cannabis regulations, and the first of three readings took place Sept. 30. For the most part, municipalities and counties in Colorado that allow cannabis sales adopted the state regulations written after the passage of Amendment 64. For whatever reasons, the City of Boulder came up with its own complex set of rules, which often differ from the state’s. Confusion over the differences was at least one reason to prompt the reconsideration.

On Oct. 8, two local dispensaries, The Farm and Terrapin Station, were cited by City Code Enforcement Officer Beverly Bookout, who had been provided photos of the two dispensaries’ booths as part of their sponsorship of the Boulder Pridefest event in September. The citations quoted Boulder code 6-16-8-D (D), which bans advertising which is purely incidental to sponsorship of a charitable event by a recreational marijuana center or a recreational marijuana-infused products manufacturer.

The tickets are just another example of the kind of inconsistent enforcement cannabis business owners have been trying to point out. Chris Woods, owner of Terrapin Station and Jan Cole of The Farm, both local residents who have been operating here for years, argue that they are legal local businesses that aren’t allowed to sponsor community events, support nonprofits or participate in happenings that are open to the rest of the community.

“I am outraged that we have been cited for noncompliance with the City’s ordinance for publicly showing support for the LGBT community at an event celebrating social equality,” Woods wrote in an angry letter to the council.

City Attorney Tom Carr responded by explaining that the rules were written according to Council’s wishes. “Several parents had stated that they wanted

to be able to enjoy festivals and events, and move around Boulder with their children without having to explain all the marijuana issues. The advertising limitations were Council’s response.”

Attorneys Brian Vicente and Christian Sederberg, who helped write Amendment 64, weighed in. “State law contains a thorough and comprehensive definition of advertising that was painstakingly drafted to narrowly tailor the language to what is typically considered commercial speech, and thus entitled to more limited free speech protections,” they wrote in an analysis of city codes sent to Council. “By using its own definition, Boulder fails to take advantage of the efforts of the Attorney General’s Office and potentially creates differences in the advertising restrictions imposed on Boulder licensees by the state and by the city.”

The issue came up again at a cannabis forum Oct. 16 at eTown Hall that was attended by 13 candidates, including two sitting Council members up for re-election. When The Farm’s Cole asked a question from the audience about the fairness of the Pridefest citations, Councilman Macon Cowles stood up and said that the citations were “just wrong,” a statement that was met with applause all around.

I attended a press conference last Wednesday

afternoon at Terrapin Station. Across the street, members of Out Boulder and the cannabis industry were protesting the Pridefest citations at the old gas-station property. (The media were running after Republican candidates up on campus.)

Taylor West of the National Cannabis Industry Association and Ean Seeb of Denver Relief talked about the growing industry here and how local businesses are working to become part of their communities. Rep. Jonathan Singer spoke of how Colorado is at “the edge of the tipping point” while signs across the street called for “Equal Rights 4 Canna-businesses” and motorists honked while making the left turn onto Canyon. It was almost as surreal as navigating the “rightsized” Folsom a couple months ago.

The third reading of the ordinance comes on Tuesday. Packets were unavailable before deadline, but I spoke with Councilwoman Lisa Morzel, who said that she was going to push to clarify the advertising question at the meeting and hoped there was support among other members to get it done.

Some questions brought up on first and second readings have already been punted to a stakeholders’ group that will come back with recommendations next year.

This shouldn’t be one of those. Parents have the right to shield their kids, but to suggest that City Council should be in the business of excluding local businesses from local events because some people don’t want to talk to their children is among the most specious arguments I’ve ever heard.

Woods intends to file a complaint in federal court on free speech grounds if the city goes through with fines for these violations. I hope it doesn’t come to that. But local cannabis businesses deserve to know whether staff and Council are really supporting them or not.

THE IDIOT GUN LOBBY GETS THE CREDIT FOR LATEST COLORADO TRAGEDY

Well, it appears the gun lobby has yet another deadly incident it deserves credit for. This time it’s the horrendous killing of two young mothers and a 35-year-old bicyclist dad in Colorado Springs on Halloween.

Here’s what the organization Colorado Ceasefire said in its release regarding the shooting: “Quite alarming was [the] response of the dispatcher to a 911 call reporting a man with an assault rifle walking down the street. According to the Washington Post, when ‘Naomi Bettis called 911 to report a man with a long black rifle outside her home,’ the dispatcher began telling her about the open carry law, indicating it was legal for the man to be carrying the rifle publicly. Bettis then hung up, but called back when the ‘man with the gun opened fire on a bicyclist outside her door.’

“Bettis said ‘I don’t think she thought it was an emergency until I made the second call.’ The shooter then continued walking down the street, shooting and killing the two women [mothers with two children each].

“Although all the details have yet to emerge, it appears that police were not dispatched to the scene until the shooting began (Colorado Springs police have yet to release the 911-dispatch tapes).”

And there you have it, folks. Thanks to the insanity of open carry laws in many Colorado counties, a mad murderer walked right down the middle of the street carrying an assault rifle, and the cops didn’t even have the power to bother him until after he started murdering innocent people. Thanks NRA and all you other paranoid gun nuts who’d rather see mothers and fathers gunned down in the streets than to allow laws that might keep guns out of the hands of those with mental illness. Is it really worth this ongoing slaughter of the innocent so you and your pals can play Red Dawn, preparing for some make believe UN troop invasion with your unregistered firearms?

Here’s to hoping that all you politicians who are too cowardly to stand up to the murderous idiots who comprise the gun lobby have as much trouble sleeping and looking yourself in the mirror as you do to saying “no” to their blood money.

It’s time to stop mincing words. If you support keeping gun laws insanely week, then you are responsible for these ongoing tragedies. Period.

Guns don’t kill people. Stupid idiots who support weak gun laws kill people.

Wednesday’s Washington Post headline summed it up this way: “Why Matt Bevin’s win in Kentucky could be the future of America’s politics.”

It’s over, folks. Democrats are doomed. Everything has now shifted to the right. We may never see another Democratic president in Wikimedia Commons our lifetime.

But wait.

As I peruse the headlines from 2008, I find newspaper after newspaper declaring that the Republican Party is dead, vanquished, no more. The media declared that Obama’s victory was such a monumental shift in the electorate that the Republican Party had become just another footnote in history.

And the moral of the story is… the news media should read more Harry S. Truman — the only thing new is the history you don’t know. Headlines like the Post’s declaring that the victory of a Tea-Party Republican (Bevin) in Kentucky is the harbinger of a permanent political shift in America is the kind of nonsensical reporting that happens when you offer buyouts to every journalist with 10 or more years of experience in an effort to get rid of all those pricy newshounds actually making a living wage.

Young news scribes, take it from us old-fart journalists: what goes around comes around. Republicans may win this year or next but then we will declare the next permanent political shift back to Democrats the year after that. At which point your daily paper will lay you off and reload with a fresh, cheap j-schooler who will be shocked when they learn that each election cycle isn’t the beginning of a permanent political dynasty.

But it does make for dramatic headlines.
