The future of journalism (Re: “Bleeding ink,” cover story, Oct. 28.) Mr. Accomazzo’s article on the uncertain future of CU’s J-School brings up the fundamental question about the role of journalism in society. I think it has been and always will be about telling the people the truth and letting the chips fall where they may.

Today, however, the commoditization of everything ranging from politics to education has made it so that the pursuit of fact often falls prey to the pursuit of profits (or at least maintaining an operational budget).

It’s a reality we’ve more or less become used to over the past 60 or so years, but we are not immune to the corrosive effect this has upon civil discourse. Journalism has become a joke in the eyes of many who would assume our attention spans are too short and our ignorance too smug. People, however, still want to know what’s happening around them, and the changing nature of our media landscape certainly warrants revisiting existing college curriculum.

The loss of the student paper at CU, however, reeks of the over-politicization of what is supposed to function as a laboratory for ideas; controversy is stoked at every turn no matter what we do and the proper response in this case would have been to apologize for offending and then moving on.

You should be ashamed (Re: “Tyler Clementi died for your sins,” Uncensored, Oct. 7.) I came across your article as I was looking for information to write a paper about Mr. Clementi and the awful things people did to him. I was shocked by your title for the story! I understand this is an editorial piece, but your blasphemy was highly unnecessary and offensive! This boy was a victim of cruelty to be sure, but you have just alienated readers who believe in Jesus as Christ with that shameful title. Many of us in the Evangelical community care deeply for children who are being bullied and abused whether they are gay or straight, so to compare him with Jesus is insulting. You say people should be ashamed for participating in Tyler’s mockery, but you, ma’am, should be ashamed of yourself to make such a remark. I will certainly be avoiding your further articles and all publications from Boulder Weekly.

Sliding toward fascism Students of political history know that fascism is the joining together of government and industry. Benito Mussolini started the fascist party in 1919 in Italy, and it ended when he was shot then hanged in 1945. Glen Beck recently called President Obama a fascist but, to be fair, he balanced it out by also calling him a communist.

In January 2010, the United States Supreme Court, by a 5 to 4 vote, ruled that corporations using their right of free speech could spend an unlimited amount of money to support or denigrate political candidates, and in their eagerness to rule, the right leaning judges left a loophole that also allowed anonymity. Not surprisingly, in this election cycle roughly 10 times the amount of corporate money is spent to favor conservatives/corporatists as is spent on liberals, who would be more likely to pass laws regulating unfair, unlawful or dangerous business practices. I would never call a conservative a fascist, but I question whether they can stop short of where they are heading.

Diversity brings divisiveness The United States is an English speaking country, not a bilingual or multi-lingual speaking country. Our government conducts all business in English. Our military communicates only in English. Can you envision military commanders giving commands to attack in numerous languages? U.S. businesses typically communicate in English. outstanding communications system.

All roadside signs, instructions, business correspondence, school classes, and general communications should be in English, with no references to any foreign languages. Immigrants have to learn English, and our children have to be proficient in English.

It can be beneficial for people to be fluent in a second language such as Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, etc. Our country needs expertise in foreign languages, but this should be subservient to fluency in English. U.S. citizens who cannot speak and write English as a primary language are probably placing themselves at a disadvantage on the ladder to success in this country.

We should not promote language diversity, because it will lead to divisiveness, the same type of divisiveness we see in numerous foreign countries.

Our No. 1 health problem The recent withdrawal of the diet drug Meridia marks the latest setback in a long and frustrating quest for a pharmaceutical solution to our national obesity epidemic. Despite millions of dollars spent by drug companies, none of the handful of diet drugs on the market is considered very effective.

This is most unfortunate, for obesity has become the number one public health problem for our community and our nation, affecting one-third of our population. It’s a precursor to heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes and other chronic illnesses that account for more than a million premature deaths each year.

Leading causes of obesity are consumption of fat-laden meat and dairy products and inadequate exercise. This is particularly critical during childhood years, when lifestyle habits become lifelong addictions. The failure of the drug industry to come up with a dietary silver bullet places added emphasis on the diet/exercise solution.

The time has come to replace meat and dairy products in our diet with wholesome grains, vegetables and fruits and to undertake a regular exercise program. Parents should insist that their schools introduce wholesome school lunch choices and should set a good example at their own dinner table.

oulder Weekly deadlines are such that in order to write an analysis of Tuesday’s election for today’s paper, I would have had to hand it in two days before the polls opened.

Analyzing why things happened two days before they actually happen is a tough gig. And the only thing worse than having your story appear under a “Dewey Beats Truman” headline is having your column appear under a “Here’s why Dewey beat Truman” headline.

So instead of dwelling on the past while it’s still prologue, and since politics, like rust, never sleeps, I thought this would be a good time to make a brazen prediction about 2012.

Sarah Palin is going to be the Republican candidate for president in 2012. She will win the nomination the same way Barack Obama won the Democratic nomination in 2008 — by winning the caucus states and staying competitive in the big primary states.

Winning a caucus state (like Colorado) requires a large cadre of passionate supporters and dedicated volunteers. They can also keep you competitive in a primary state.

Does the phrase “Tea Party” mean anything to you?

A lot of Democrats reading this may welcome a Palin candidacy on grounds that it would guarantee the reelection of Barack Obama, just as Barry Goldwater’s 1964 candidacy guaranteed the election of Lyndon Johnson.

And a lot of Republican big shots

think so too, according to the website Politico.com. Last Sunday it reported “top Republicans in Washington and in the national GOP establishment” don’t think she can win and intended to start a “stop Palin” campaign as soon as the election was over.

It won’t work.

In politics, the saying goes, “You can’t beat somebody with no nobody,” and the field of establishment-certified GOP candidates for 2012, while not exactly nobodies, has a distinct charisma deficit compared to Palin. Charisma counts for a lot. It’s all but impossible for a candidate who doesn’t have it to beat one that does. Just ask Hillary Clinton.

So if Palin wins the nomination, can she win the election? You betcha.

Yes, she can (which is differ from saying, “Yes, she will”).

Huh? (I hear you say).

The rap against Palin is she’s too conservative for the country, her appeal is limited to the far right and religious right, her negatives are too high, she’s a knuckle-dragging, right-to-life extremist, most voters don’t think she’s qualified to be president, and she’s too inexperienced, dumb, and ignorant to govern.

Now change the personal pronouns in the foregoing sentence from feminine to masculine, and you will have a concise, one-sentence summation of how most Democrats perceived Ronald Reagan right up to Election Day 1980. see DANISH PLAN Page 8

To be sure, Palin had some real shortcomings show during the 2008 campaign. Don’t expect them to be there in 2012.

Two years is a long time in politics.

It’s plenty of time in which to reinvent yourself — especially if you’ve already been at it for a year.

Since she resigned as governor of Alaska — a move that was widely derided as dumb at the time — Palin has given about 100 speeches all over the country, most of them at Tea Party rallies or on behalf of Republican candidates. In the course of doing that, she has acquired a lot of chits and a ballooning contact list, both of which will be invaluable in 2012.

But there’s more to it than that. The sort of speaking tour Palin has been on (and will continue to be on) is like a grand tour of the continent. It’s educational. Palin is learning how to campaign and how to participate effectively in the national political conversation.

America is getting to know Palin, and more importantly, Palin is getting to know America. Unlike 2008, Palin will be at the top of her game in 2012.

But the question remains, is she too

conservative to get elected? Is she another Goldwater? Or is she another Reagan?

Reagan proved that unapologetic conservatives can win national elections (especially when they are running against endlessly apologetic liberals).

I see a lot of Reagan in Palin. So does Michael Reagan, Reagan’s son.

After she gave her speech at the 2008 Republican Convention, he wrote in his column, “Dad’s back, only this time he’s a woman.”

Ah, yes. The gender thing. With Palin, it’s kind of like the race thing was with Obama.

Race played a pivotal role in getting him elected. Obama got a lot of votes from white Americans who weren’t color blind. They voted for him because they sized him up, race included, and said, “It’s time.” Race wasn’t their only consideration, or even the most important one, but it was the deal closer.

It could be the same for Palin with gender. By itself, gender won’t get her elected. But if her candidacy takes off, it could close the deal.

Demon rum Speaking of marijuana, a study published in the respected British medical journal Lancet demonstrates that alcohol is more dangerous and destructive than illegal drugs, including heroine and crack cocaine.

British experts evaluated the impact of a host of drugs, including alcohol, marijuana, LSD, ecstasy, crack and heroin, focusing on how the drugs hurt individuals and how they hurt society. And they came to the conclusion that everyone who’s ever been close to an alcoholic already knows: Alcohol is the most harmful and most dangerous to society out of the bunch, with drugs like marijuana and LSD ranking far down on the danger scale.

The study, funded by Britain’s Centre for Crime and Justice Studies, points out that alcohol not only hurts drinkers, but also those near them. Rather than suggesting that their study ought to bring about a return to alcohol prohibition, researchers said it might instead be used to rethink the way illegal drug use is treated.

It’s the same thing recreational pot smokers have been saying for years. While alcohol is associated with more crime than any other drug, marijuana is associated with a high consumption of junk food. Allowing the former to be legal while the latter lands you in prison is absurd.

Evangelicals back off — a bit Good news: Religious harassment of non-Christians is down at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. A survey of cadets found that 41 percent of those who identify as non-Christian said they had to put up with unwanted proselytizing at least once or twice in the preceding year.

Academy brass told the Associated Press that this percentage represents a decrease from previous years. Hallelujah!

Religious intolerance at the Academy was brought to the public’s attention in 2004 when more than 50 cadets filed complaints alleging that Christian students bullied and verbally abused them for not being Christian. One Jewish cadet reported being called a “filthy Jew” and being told that the Jewish people were responsible for killing Jesus.

Colorado bucks trend

Tea Party doesn’t scald Dems in top state races

olorado once again proved its independent streak in this week’s election.

While the rest of the nation was seeing red, giving Republicans the largest win in the U.S. House in decades, Colorado’s response was more measured — and divided.

We elected a Democratic governor and senator. But we gave Republicans control of our own state House.

We soundly defeated amendments driven by an extreme right-wing agenda for lower taxes, against government-controlled health care and outlawing abortion.

But we unseated strong incumbent Democrats in state races like treasurer and secretary of state. We also seem to have unseated two Democrats in the U.S. House.

So what gives Colorado such a headstrong, split personality?

Senate President Brandon Schaffer, D-Longmont, says Colorado voters tend to be an interesting blend: conservative on some issues, progressive on others.

“This is a moderate state, and those of us who’ve grown up here and lived here all our lives have always known that,” he says. “We are fiscally conservative and socially progressive. When you put those types of candidates — candidates who are fiscally conservative and socially progressive — on the ballot, they will win. In today’s day and age, the socially progressive candidates are Democrats, and that’s why Democrats are winning in Colorado.”

Despite the much-ballyhooed Tea Party effect, it seems that Colorado snuffs out measures — and candidates — that are socially extreme.

“When you have these Tea Party ultra-conservative candidates who are fiscally conservative and socially conservative as well, they lose,” Schaffer says. “That’s

a Democratic presidency, Waak says it’s natural for the political pendulum to swing back and forth.

“It’s a great opportunity for the Republicans to show they really want to solve problems in this country,” she says. “If they don’t, in two years, the pendulum swings back again.”

State Rep. Claire Levy, D-Boulder, says Colorado is showing an independent streak by repeatedly defeating citizen-driven ballot initiatives that would change the state Constitution. If Amendment 63, the anti-Obamacare initiative, was a referendum on President Barack Obama, and if the state were swinging Republican, it should have passed.

“I think the fact that it didn’t hopefully means people are becoming much more wary of government by initiative,” she says.

State Sen. Rollie Heath, D-Boulder, chalks up Colorado’s unwillingness to simply go with the rest of the nation’s political flow to the thoughtfulness and intelligence of its voters.

“We’re just reasserting, once and for all, that we’re very, very independent, and hopefully thoughtfully independent,” he says of the state leaning red on certain races and ballot measures, blue on others. “It’s a thoughtful electorate.”

Former Colorado Speaker of the House Andrew Romanoff agrees.

“I think people in Colorado vote for the person, not the party,” he says. “The voters of Colorado are thoughtful and shrewd and like to pick and choose.”

Romanoff adds that he saw an e-mail that nicely summed up Colorado’s role nationally in this election: “The Republican wave broke on the Rocky Mountains.”

Colorado seeing red in House

f the currently projected winners in the Colorado House races hold, the Republicans’ one-person lead in that chamber will make it interesting when it comes time to discuss issues like balancing the state budget and redistricting next year.

The last redistricting effort ended in what Democrats called “the midnight gerrymander” of 2003. They claimed the Republicans took advantage of their majority numbers to create a plan for redrawing districts in their favor. (That plan was eventually thrown out by the Colorado Supreme Court.)

In the following year’s election, in part due to financial support from a handful of wealthy Democratic donors upset by the Republicans’ redistricting effort, the Dems won enough races to take control of both houses of the Legislature as well as the governor’s office.

The prospect of having another house divided when that issue comes to a head again in 2011 has some political leaders crossing their fingers.

“If the Republicans have the majority, they will have the responsibility, and hopefully they will step up Boulder Weekly

what we saw with Tom Tancredo. That’s what we saw with Ken Buck and on down the line. The Democrats know how to balance a budget, just as well as they know how to fight for the little guy out there, and that’s why they win races.”

Colorado Democratic Party Chair Pat Waak downplays the Tea Party effect.

“It’s hard to point out where the Tea Party won anything, because even in the 4th Congressional District, I don’t think [incoming U.S. Rep.] Cory Gardner would call himself a Tea Party candidate,” she says.

State Rep. Dickey Lee Hullinghorst, D-Longmont, agrees.

“It wasn’t the Tea Party that swung the majority, it was just a whole lot of unrest,” she says. “I think the Tea Party gets a whole lot more credit than they deserve.”

“I always consider Colorado as something of an anomaly,” says Waak, explaining that we are roughly one-third Democrat, one-third Republican and onethird independent. So neither of the major political parties can win unless they attract a significant portion of those independent voters.

Waak attributes losses in state offices like treasurer and secretary of state to a “down-ticket” voting phenomenon in which some independents vote only for the top offices, like governor and U.S. Senate, but skip the smaller contests. That means the party faithful on both sides of the aisle have more say on those down-ticket offices, and Republicans saw a higher turnout than Democrats this year, which may have contributed to the defeat of the incumbent secretary of state and treasurer.

When asked whether the gains made by Republicans in both the U.S. House and state House are simply a repeat of 1994, the midterm election during

“How partisan it is depends on how well we can get past our ideologies,” Hullinghorst says.

Colorado Democratic Party Chair Pat Waak acknowledges that redistricting is probably the most serious concern associated with a Republican-controlled House, and the matter could end up in court again.

That is an outcome Hullinghorst hopes can be avoided.

“I hope we can reach some agreement,” she says. “It won’t be easy.”

State Rep. Claire Levy, D-Boulder, says the Republicans’ takeover of the House reflected “the power of money and negative advertising. I don’t take the results necessarily as a rejection of the Democratic agenda. I would take it as a reflection that those seats are going to swing back and forth.

“It’s very hard to say the race is a rejection of what we’ve been trying to do in terms of policy,” she continues, explaining that the Republicans run on a platform of limited government, which is already a reality thanks

County 1A, 1B squeak by

Open space measure appeared bound for defeat

ith all but provisional ballots counted, county voters appear to have passed two new tax measures — one a mill levy increase to benefit human services, the other a sales-and-use tax to be used for open space purchases. The open-space issue, County Ballot Issue 1B, was head for a narrow defeat late on Tuesday, but garnered enough votes to pass by mid-morning on Wednesday.

County Issue 1A passed with 51.4 percent of the vote. It asked voters to approve a 0.9 mill (nine-tenths of one mill) ad valorem property tax increase for a term of five years to backfill significant gaps in state funding for human services.

Using current property values for Boulder County, the mill levy increase is expected to be about $7 per $100,000 in actual property value (e.g., $21 for a property valued at $300,000) and should generate about $5.2 million per year for five years beginning in 2011, according to the county.

Already the county has made deep budget cuts to make up for a $4.5 million deficit. County officials told Boulder Weekly that $2.3 million of the revenue from the tax increase would be used for child care services.

The county has a waiting list of 600 to 700 children, and the list is growing.

County Issue 1B appeared to be losing by a slender

margin Tuesday night, but garnered enough votes late in the counting to pass with 50.20 percent of the vote.

County Issue 1B asked voters to approve a new 0.15 percent sales and use tax for the next 20 years. The percentage would amount to one cent on a purchase of $10. In addition, 1B would allow for the issuance of bonds totaling $40 million, all for the purpose of purchasing open space.

County officials argued that the tax was necessary for the county to make land purchases that were planned some 30 years ago, thus realizing its plans for land preservation. Because a similar measure was rejected by voters in 2009 — the first time an open-space measure had been voted down in Boulder County — county officials worked hard to get their message out to the public.

“We did a much more vigorous campaign this time around,” says County Commissioner Will Toor, who went to bed Tuesday night believing the open-space tax had failed. “Unlike the last campaign [in 2009], we raised some money for the campaign, did multiple direct mail pieces targeted to portions of Longmont and southeast county and did a much more vigorous letter to the editor campaign. I do think that there was substantially more effort that went into trying to connect with voters this time around.”

Toor hasn’t seen any precinct information, so he

can’t comment on how the vote broke down geographically. However, because early votes and mail-in ballots were tabulated first, he says it’s clear that people who voted at the polls gave open space its narrow victory.

“That does tend to be a lot of voters who are younger voters, where if you look at early voting, it tends to be skewed toward voter demographics that are more conservative,” he says.

Toor says he’s relieved that Boulder County will be able to move forward with land acquisition, purchasing properties that would almost certainly have slipped beyond the county’s grasp if 1B had failed.

“Clearly people were sensitive to taxes this year,” he says. “By a narrow margin, it looks like the voters of Boulder county saw the value in increasing our taxes in order to be able to help our neighbors in hard times and to continue acquire open space lands and to manage those lands to provide all the benefits that open space brings.”

The County Clerk and Recorder’s office was verifying provisional ballots as of press time, so election results from the county have not been declared official.

However, Toor said that the small number of provisional ballots means that the vote on 1B is unlikely to reverse itself again.

Personhood Amendment defeated Results echo 2008 rejection of similar measure

oloradans once again rejected an attempt to amend the state’s constitution to give full constitutional rights to fertilized eggs. Amendment 62, known unofficially as the Definition of Person amendment and the Fetal Personhood amendment, sought to apply the term “person” to “every human being from the beginning of biological development of that human being.”

Similar to the proposed Amendment 48 in 2008, this year’s ballot initiative aimed to legally recognize fertilized human eggs as people, giving them the same “inalienable rights, equality of justice and due process of law” that the Colorado constitution grants all human beings. And just like Amendment 48, which failed 73.21 percent to 26.79 percent, this year’s version was overwhelmingly rejected, garnering only 30 percent of the vote.

If it had passed, it would have made all abortions and some forms of birth control illegal — including the “morning after” pill, birth control pills and intrauterine devices (IUDs), all of which can cause a woman’s body to reject a fertilized egg.

The amendment would also have affected people’s ability to make use of in vitro technology to combat infertility and would have eliminated stem cell research.

by Pamela White Doctors worried that they might face criminal charges if steps taken to preserve a mother’s health resulted in harm to a fetus. Women’s health advocates expressed concerned that women who had natural miscarriages might face legal inquiries, including invasive forensic vaginal exams, to make sure they hadn’t deliberately terminated their pregnancies.

The effort against Amendment 62 included medical practitioners, women’s health advocates, reproductive-rights activists, and civil rights experts, as well as rape survivors, some of whom spoke publicly of their experiences and how important it is for a woman who has been raped to regain control of her body by having access to emergency contraception and, if needed, abortion.

“The No on 62 Campaign and the more than 70 organizations that have been opposing Amendment 62 are absolutely thrilled,” says Fofi Mendez, campaign director for the No on 62 campaign. “We have doctors, nurses, medical researchers and faith leaders, as well as health care advocacy organizations and civil rights advocacy groups across the state who are absolutely thrilled that they were able to get the message out to voters that Amendment 62 is not only sneaky, but that it confers constitutional legal and constitutional rights on fertilized eggs in Colorado. And that

is something that Colorado voters have overwhelmingly rejected.”

Some experts attribute the slight gains made by supports of the amendment to a higher conservative voter turnout. But regardless of those tiny gains, Mendez says Coloradans have made themselves clear on this issue.

“Most folks in the state of Colorado have very clearly stated both in 2008 and again in 2010 that they do not want to ban abortion, especially in cases of rape, incest or when the life of or health of the mother is in danger,” she says. “They do not want to ban birth control in the state of Colorado. They do not want to harm women who have experienced miscarriages or who may be seeking cancer treatments. And they do not want to take away the right of families who are seeking in vitro fertilization. Colorado voters have once again told the state of Colorado no we will not limit these personal, private medical decisions that women and their families make every single day.”

Proponents for Amendment 62 have told the media they plan to be back with another attempt in 2012.

Says Mendez: “Our question to the them is, ‘What part of ‘no’ do you not understand?’”

oulder City Ballot Issue 2B, also called the “replacement tax” or the “utility occupation tax,” passed with a wide margin: 68.55 percent for and only 31.45 percent against. That means when Thanksgiving comes around, Boulderites can give thanks for the fact that public libraries are still open, there are enough cops on the street to help keep people safe, and city roads aren’t any worse than they usually are.

By approving the replacement tax — which really does just replace a fee Xcel users were already paying — Boulder voters ensured that the city will continue to receive some $4 million each year for the general budget. That money used to come from Xcel via the franchise fee, money the city charged Xcel to use our roads and rights-of-way. Of course Xcel just passed that cost onto customers as an operating cost. Now, we’re calling it a tax on Xcel, and they’re still going to pass it on to us. A $4 million zero-sum game.

In addition to the money issue, 2B also represents another step on Boulder’s road to energy transformation. In August, the city council decided not to renew the 20-year exclusive contract with Xcel. Boulder can now pursue other energy options, from municipalization to contracting with new providers.

The last bit of language on the ballot spelled this out, instructing the city to “develop plans for providing a cleaner future energy supply […] with the intent of placing choices for Boulder’s energy supply on the ballot before the end of 2015.”

For some in Boulder, that’s the most important part.

“This is a great win for choice in renewable energy and for a future with options,” says Eric Brolis of Namaste Solar.

Groups like Yes on Renewables worked overtime to make sure voters understood that 2B was not a new tax and that Boulder has options beyond Xcel.

“Clearly Boulder voters did their homework, studied the issue and realized now is not the time to be locked into a 20-year [exclusive] contract,” says City Councilmember Crystal Grey.

Alison Burchell, a volunteer with the Yes on 2B campaign, agreed.

“What we’ve seen here is that when you give people the opportunity to educate themselves, amazing things can happen,” she says. “What’s nice about 2B is that it was something to vote for, not something to vote against. The whole country can take a look at what we’ve done here.”

to massive state budget cuts. “We’ve already got limited government. It’s a good slogan, but it’s not going to translate into much.”

Levy worries that the Republicans might be heavy-handed in wielding their one-person majority, trying to push extreme conservative social agendas related to issues like sexual orientation.

“I think they will take their 32-33 margin and behave as if they have a mandate,” she says. “If they have an extreme agenda, they’re not going to get it passed.”

Former House Speaker Andrew Romanoff lauds Gov.-elect John Hickenlooper for his conciliatory tone on election night.

“The problems of the state are too big for one party to solve on its own,”

Romanoff says. “If the Republicans take the House, they need to decide whether they’re interested in solving problems and working with the governor or trying to distract him from his agenda.”

Ken Bickers, a political science professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder, says a Republican majority in the House might actually result in a more measured approach to redistricting, since both sides know they won’t be capable of pulling off a major power grab. Bickers suggests the two sides might just agree to shore up their established territories by slightly increasing their numbers in districts in which they already have an advantage.

“Gridlock leads to the status quo,” he says. “Then again, hubris and adrenaline are dangerous things in politics.”

f you’ve ever skied, it’s unlikely anyone has to tell you there’s a difference between the way the locals approach the mountain and the way gapers from the Midwest approach it. Locals are often the first on and last off the lift.

But the Ski Area Citizen’s Coalition has put a number on one of the things that matters to locals and doesn’t always seem to matter to tourists — the environmental impact of ski resorts on our public lands. The coalition grades ski areas in the western U.S. on habitat and watershed protection, addressing climate change and environmental policies and practices.

“We take it upon ourselves with the coalition to make those standards a little higher, to push those ski areas to be better stewards of the lands that they’re borrowing from us,” says Paul Joyce, conservation associate with Colorado Wild, one of the founding partners of the coalition.

First place, and a score of 89.7 out of 100, went to Squaw Valley in California.

Four Colorado resorts were ranked in the top 10: Aspen Mountain Ski Resort (second, with 86.1 percent); Buttermilk (third at 85.7 percent); Aspen Highlands Ski Resort (ninth, at 80.3 percent); and Powderhorn Resort (10th, at 79.4 percent). Those all count as A grades on the coalition’s report card.

“We’ve curved the heck out of it.

Otherwise everybody gets Fs,” Joyce says. “I don’t believe in Fs. They don’t encourage action or change.”

Breckenridge Ski Resort, Copper Mountain Ski Resort and Winter Park Resort have room to grow.

Breckenridge tops the list for worst ski areas, followed by Copper Mountain.

about 70 percent of on-mountain waste. But new construction, like the relatively recent Peak 8 lift, and the roads and buildings it spawned, cost the area points. The test is weighted so that recent developments and terrain expansions cost an area a lot of points, Joyce says.

“The Forest Service looks at them as a partner in getting people out to enjoy their public lands, and that’s a beautiful partnership,” Joyce says.

“But the flip side of that is that in the last decade we’ve seen a real move from the industry, from ‘getting out on public lands and it’s something everybody can enjoy’ to a very elitist, real estate-driven agenda.”

According to the coalition website, since the 1978-79 season, the number of skiers nationally has increased less than 2 percent. But ski areas, 90 percent of which are on public lands leased from the U.S. Forest Service, have continued to expand their terrain. In the White River National Forest, which leases the land used for Vail, Aspen, Breckenridge and Copper, skiers have grown by 28 percent since 1985, while ski area acreage has increased by 107 percent.

“They haven’t been such good stewards lately,” Joyce says. “They do a lot of green-washing to try and save face for a lot of the things they do with the land, but the reality is their impacts are huge, and they’re typically in very fragile landscapes. And they’re using their proximity to those landscapes for revenue.”

More ski areas are hiring environmental consultants, but they’re also leaving hot tubs uncovered, heating sidewalks and driveways, and installing lifts that come right out of hotels. Vail Resorts even has a bill before Congress to permit them to build roller coasters for summer use at the ski areas.

“Embracing conservation and making money aren’t conflicting interests,” Joyce says. “There are ways to attract your customers and make them feel good about their experience, and still charge them an arm and a leg, but have them be less impactful.”

oulderites have long enjoyed the opportunity to step out during their evenings and indulge in a bevy of free, live performances that invite neighborhood amateurs to express themselves creatively.

Conor O’Neill’s regularly offers an open mic on Tuesday nights, Catacombs hosts one on Thursday nights, and a new weekly poetry reading is currently in the works at Tonic, with similar showcases offered throughout the year at the No-Name Bar on the Hill, the Boulder Bookstore and on the CU campus.

Perhaps due to the common statement that there “tends not to be anything else happening that night,” Monday has become the hot night for open mics of all formats downtown.

During football season, Johnny’s Cigar Bar puts on a heady 21-and-up open mic to accompany spirits and smokes, whereas Trident Booksellers and Café runs combinations of outdoor jam sessions, poetry readings and other open amateur events on their back patio stage during the warmer months.

It’s also on Monday nights that longtime Boulder habitué Tom Peters — owner of Pearl Street’s Beat Bookshop — hosts the multi-awardwinning “So, You’re a Poet” series. The series remains the longest-running poetry reading of its kind in our community.

“When I started, poetry readings were not a part of the culture,” says Peters, noting that back in the 1980s, there were no Slam Poetry Competitions, no Def Poetry Jam, and the likes of Jack Kerouac’s landmark Big Sur was all but forgotten.

“There were famous poets reading at CU or Naropa, but there was no place for amateurs to read their works,” he says.

“That’s why I felt it was important to start my series.”

Peters also says the weekly readings he hosts are an outlet for his own creativity as well.

“I try to do it all, to be involved in what I love,” Peters says. “And I wanted to have a place where people can be exposed to the things I’m interested in.”

Series regular Eric Medema is one of a handful of amateur and professional poets who have been coming to Peters’ weekly series for years.

“Reading poetry has helped me find my own voice,” says Medema.

He notes that after a traumatic brain injury he incurred some years back, coming to the Goat to read his poetry every week “helps to further facilitate the healing of my brain by speaking my mind without having to stay in a box like most public places will have you do.

During those early first open mics, the Cup offered performers the chance to read poems or tell jokes, in addition to playing music. These days, now that the scene has become such a popular event for amateur artists, Jarchow has been forced to admit musicians only, particularly after the Cup’s owners told her there were to be no more poets.

“The decision was made,” Jarchow says, “and there was no discussion.”

Due to this lack of poetry — and the fact that her open mic starts at 7 p.m. to the Goat’s 8:30 p.m. start — Jarchow, like Peters, feels no sense of competition.

Despite the fact that both weekly events take place on Monday night at competing coffee shops so close to one another, Jarchow’s sense is that it’s not a direct rivalry.

“If this were New York City, every third shop would have something,” she says. “The question is, ‘Why would someone start an open mic?’ My intention is not to compete, but to have people perform and develop as part of the community. We’re filling a niche.”

John Lennon’s art to benefit Boulder County AIDS Project

I

n 1970, Scotland Yard busted into the prestigious London Art Gallery, shutting down a newly opened show and seizing eight pieces of artwork deemed obscene by authorities. The confiscated lithographs, a relatively tame set of erotic nudes created by the artist for his new wife as a wedding gift, were made by none other than John Lennon, a man whose fame as a pop star barred him from being viewed as a serious visual artist while he was alive.

Now, 30 years after his death, a touring show of nearly 100 of Lennon’s drawings and song lyrics will be in Boulder Nov. 5-7 as part of the exhibit IMAGINE — The Art of John Lennon.

“Many people know Lennon as a Beatle, a peace activist, a spokesperson and a luminary, but few know him as an artist,” says Rudy Siegel, a producer at Legacy Productions, who works in conjunction with Yoko Ono and Bag One Arts to bring Lennon’s artwork to the masses.

“It’s yet something else to discover about the man, the myth and the legend.”

The show, which will benefit the Boulder County AIDS Project, consists of a limited edition of lithographs, serigraphs and copper etchings of drawings done by Lennon between 1964 and his death in 1980. The simple, expressive lines of his whimsical drawings in pen, pencil and Japanese sumi ink chronicle Lennon’s life, with a heavy presence of self-portraits.

“There’s a lot of similarities between how he wrote his songs and how he drew,” Siegel says. “With a few strokes he was able to capture an entire phrase or draw a point in time in his life. He got down on paper what he wanted to say very simply and quickly, both lyrically and with his artwork.”

Lennon’s interest in visual art dates back to his early childhood, when he created a collection of his quirky drawings and satirical writing in a fictitious newspaper he called The Daily Howl. He went on to Boulder Weekly

attend the Liverpool Institute of the Arts between 1957 and 1960, before being catapulted into stratospheric levels of fame as part of The Beatles.

“People like me are aware of their so-called genius at 10, 8, 9,” said Lennon in an interview with Rolling Stone in 1971. “I always wondered, ‘Why has nobody discovered me?’ ... Why didn’t they put me in art school? Why didn’t they train me? A couple of teachers would notice me, encourage me to be something

or other, to draw or paint — express myself. But most of the time they were trying to beat me into being a fucking dentist or a teacher.”

Lennon found the artistic encouragement he desired when he met Ono in 1966 at one of her art openings in London.

“He started to feel like he wanted to do a gallery show,” said Ono in an interview with the Boulder Weekly in 2008. “He said, ‘Well, I can’t do it because I’m a Beatle.’ I said, ‘What kind of nonsense is that? Of course you can do it!’ But he was right. ...

There was a kind of art-world snobbery of, ‘Oh, he’s just a pop star. He’s dabbling. We’re not going to show that.’”

For the past 18 years, Ono has worked with Legacy Productions to organize and coordinate 15 to 20 shows of Lennon’s art per year across the United States. Ono has faced criticism from those who claim she is exploiting the work of her late husband, especially after she added color to a number of prints of Lennon’s drawings, including several that will be on display as part of the Imagine show. According to Ono, gallery directors had suggested years ago that she add color to the pieces to bring more depth and vibrancy to Lennon’s simple line drawings. She has defended her promotion of Lennon’s artwork, stating that her goal has always been to share his work with his fans and spread his message of love.

“Hundreds of thousands of people have come out over the years to see John as an artist in the true sense of the word. That’s really the essence of what this whole program is about — allowing people to come together, pun intended,” Siegel says. “We’ll have the wealthiest person in town standing next to someone who doesn’t have a penny in their pocket and they’ll be hanging out, enjoying the exhibit. Wherever we go, there’s usually a lot of peace and love in the room — from Portland, Maine, to Portland, Ore., and everywhere in between. It’s a powerful gig.”

Free from the bureaucracy Eisley spreads its wings

tacy DuPree King — one of the five family members who make up the band Eisley (two of her sisters, one brother and one cousin round out the roster) — is apologetic when she answers the phone.

“I’m a bit under the weather today,” she says. “It’s all this touring and spending time on the bus and having to deal with all the recycled air, I think.”

She punctuates the sentence with a laugh, which is a good sign considering all the problems the band has endured recently. She says their upcoming full-length record (“We’re looking at releasing it in early spring, perhaps March”) focuses on these struggles.

“It’s definitely a new direction for us,” she says. “It has this almost righteous anger to it because of things that were happening in our lives. A few of us went through some troubling situations, personally, and on top of that we were having difficulties with our record label.”

The record label in question is Warner Bros., and to hear her tell it, ending this relationship was for the best.

“The first thing I thought (when they were released from their contract) was, ‘Wow, now we can make records the way we want without a guy in a suit sticking his hands in things,’” she says. “We had a few problems with them. Whenever we would make a record, they made us feel like that sad, strange kid who gets chastised for coloring outside the lines. They wanted something from us that we refused to give them, which was this across-the-board, bread-winning, successful album. There were all these expectations, and we just wanted to be artists and write great songs.

We felt out of balance being on a huge record label. It was not the right kind of relationship for us at all.”

So instead of being worried about not having a major label to back them anymore, the band feels relieved.

“Yeah,” she says before laughing long and hard for a bit. “I think we’re all breathing this big, collective

Plus, this and other experiences have taught them a few things.

“The new songs definitely paint a picture and they’re from real experiences and emotions we’ve had,” she says. “Our old records were just done for art’s sake, I guess. We were more interested in fantasy and love, and I think now that we’ve been through some more things in our lives, there’s this bravery to the lyrics that brings the fantasy into focus.”

Their current tour has been going well, which is a huge blessing to the band considering how infrequently they’ve been coming out with new material.

“It’s great to see all these fans still coming out to shows even when you haven’t released a new record in a while,” King says. “There’s a sense of gratefulness toward them for doing that. When you haven’t released a full-on record in three years or so, to have them still come out to the shows is a special thing for sure. It’s a really great feeling. It’s amazing. They’re the only reason we can do it. If no one came, we’d easily just hang it up and make music in our bedrooms, but the fact that we can just pack up and tour the country is really encouraging.”

That passion for music is something that drives the band, so it is no surprise that King encourages others to pursue music if they have that same passion.

“I feel like music, for me, is survival, it’s just how I create as a human,” she says. “It’s like I’m infected or something. It’s how I express myself completely, entirely. It’s something I could never just drop.”

So in a way she almost has to make music, right?

“Yeah,” she says with a chuckle. “When people come up to me and say, ‘I really want to start a band,’ the first thing I tell them is don’t do it unless you have to because it’s hell unless you really love it. Unless it’s the only way you can really express yourself, I don’t know if you should be doing it because it asks a lot of you all the time. It’s like a relationship. Music is my muse. It feels good to me, like it’s part of what makes me healthy.”

Despite the righteous anger of the next record, however, King is quick to point out that a sense of balance and self-awareness are helping prevent the band from morphing into an emo band or changing their name to Satan’s Angry Crusaders.

“I feel like this new record really does take a journey of love and freedom and even fantasy a bit, but I think it strikes a good balance too,” she says. “It’s not like we’re rock ’n’ roll, hard-edged crack-heads. We’re still grounded.”

Humor with a feminine twist Broad Comedy has wide appeal

f you’re going to talk about everything from tampons to the Taliban and expect to get a laugh out of it, you’re going to need a lot of balls — or broads.

Luckily all-woman comedy troupe Broad Comedy will be bringing plenty of both to town on Nov. 6, when they perform at the Boulder Theater.

Politically tinged and musically inclined, Broad Comedy is the brainchild of husband-and-wife team Katie Goodman and Soren Kisiel, who write all of the sketches and songs from their home in Bozeman, Mont.

With songs like “I’m Saving My Hymen for Jesus” and “Soccer Mom Ho,” the show covers topics ranging from the politically charged to the universally hilarious, focusing — naturally — on women’s issues.

“It’s life and the news and just being a woman traveling around the planet,” Goodman says. “We’ve written things about the Taliban, just everything,” Not everything is for every audience, however, Goodman says. The cast of Broads recently took the show to Vancouver, where their song “The Pro-Life and the Pro-Choice Should Be Friends” — a spoof on the song “The Farmer and Cowman Should Be Friends” — fell a bit flat.

“It was kind of dead silent,” Goodman says.

“Afterwards we were talking to people and they said, ‘Oh yeah, we don’t have that issue here. Everybody’s pro-choice here in the entire country!’ So we immediately took that out and put something else in.”

Even in the states, Goodman says she sometimes tweaks the lineup. And that’s practically a given if you want to get a laugh at both a Republican golf tournament fundraiser and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival,

where, by the way, FringeReview named Broad Comedy one of the top 10 sketch acts.

And getting a laugh, after all, is Goodman’s primary objective, which is why she makes sure the politics don’t outweigh the satire — and fun.

“Making them laugh is number one because I feel that you need to have the audience laughing in order for them to have receptive, open ears,” she says.

“We’re all so burnt out from all the shit that’s going on in the world; I think a really important part of our job is to inspire people, to make them feel re-energized about changing the world.”

Goodman says that though the show is steeped in political satire and feminist ethos, it also aims to be a good time for everyone, and is popular with the gentlemen in the audience as well.

“I’m not a male-bashy kind of person,” she says.

nism, but I was always really uninterested in that. Part of it is, I just don’t hate men. I’m not angry at the patriarchy. I see problems, but I’m very, very interested in having us all work together.”

Helping to bring that positive message to audiences across the nation is an ever-changing group of performers.

The home team, as Goodman calls it, is based in Bozeman, and a rotating crew of performers audition for cityspecific performances. Actors don’t have to worry about a little thing like pregnancy getting in the way of performing, either.

“Everyone’s who’s had a baby in Broad Comedy has performed pregnant. We always have one part that we’ve written in,” Goodman says. “It’s one of the fun things about being an all-women’s show. We don’t kick people out when they’re pregnant. We just work around it, or rewrite or revise, and it becomes really funny, especially if the character is a cheerleader.”

Working with such a scattered crew isn’t always easy. Trying to coordinate a music rehearsal over Skype, she says, was pretty much a disaster because of the lag time between computers.

“I’m starting to do a solo show now too and I’m like, ‘Oh my God, this is so much easier!’” she says.

But with less than 700 miles to travel from Bozeman to Boulder, Goodman says Saturday’s show has been easier to plan than most, and the city promises a receptive crowd.

“I think Boulder’s going to be the perfect audience for us,” she says.

fficer Greg bent Cindy over and slapped handcuffs on her wrist. She pleaded that she had not committed a crime.

“You know what you did and you know what will happen to you as a result,” Officer Greg barked.

“But officer,” Cindy whined, “I did not mean to break the law.”

Officer Greg leaned over Cindy, a smile spread across his face. “I’ve never had so much fun in my life,” he said, breaking role.

“Me too,” Cindy replied, wriggling her body toward him for a kiss.

It was 2 a.m., and they had just returned home from a Halloween party where everyone loved their officer-andprisoner couples costumes. But their night was just getting started. Cindy had unbuttoned her coat, exposing her low-cut, striped prisoner top and short shorts. She strutted over to Greg and grabbed his belt.

“Careful lady,” he said. “You don’t want to be caught battering an officer.”

She gripped tighter and pulled him toward her, leading to her sexy and sensual arrest on the living room couch.

For months they both had expressed an interest in trying some role-play in the bedroom, but neither had found the right moment or opportunity to fulfill their fantasies … until Halloween.

Like many couples, Cindy and Greg were intrigued but nervous about adding fantasy role-play to their sexual repertoire. Halloween offered an excuse to dress up for the whole night, allowing them to break the ice. As the night wore on, they became increasingly more comfortable role-playing in public. Cindy tried to bribe Officer Greg with sexual favors, and Greg performed suggestive strip searches on prisoner Cindy. By the time they got home, they were inebriated with arousal.

One week later, their Halloween outfits still lay on the living room floor.

As Cindy started to put them back in the closet, she was inspired to try on Greg’s police gear. When Greg came Boulder Weekly

home, she popped out from around a corner. “You’re under arrest,” she giggled as she handcuffed his arms behind his back. She unzipped his khakis, pulled them to the floor, and got on her knees. Helpless and highly aroused, Greg moaned into her mouth.

Cindy and Greg fell madly in love with role-play and reverse role-play because it added the right touch of fantasy and seduction to their four-year relationship. They agreed to have two dates each month dedicated solely to stay-at-home, sensual dates filled with erotic fantasies and outfits for role-play.

Though it was already the first week in November, they went back to the Halloween shops and capitalized on all the sales so they could fill their spare closet with costumes for the whole year.

Though costumes may not be for everyone, role-play can be for anyone.

Because you are in character, it can be an opportunity to ask for things you might not normally feel comfortable requesting in regular life. Take the older couple from last week’s article.

They have been together 51 years and asserted that they keep the marital fire aflame by incorporating fantasy.

Though they do not dress up as they role-play, they pretend to invite various characters into their bed.

Sometimes they imagine having sex with a different person, and sometimes they imagine themselves as a different person. In either instance, they can add sexual variety through fantasy and yet still be loyal to and enjoy one other.

Fantasy and role-play, with or without costume, allow partners to have fiery sexual fun while still being in the bedroom with the one you love. It adds spice and sexual variety in a safe way. It gives permission for other pieces of your personality to be expressed.

So before you put that costume back in the closet, consider some other uses for it year-round!

n 1967, a joint team of climbers from Colorado and Seattle embarked on a mission to scale the highest point on the continent: 20,323-foot Mount McKinley (also known by its native name Denali).

Of the 12 men who set out on the arduous trek to the fabled summit, only five returned alive. Seven young men lost their lives high on the mountain when a storm of enduring ferocity assailed the summit and rendered both retreat and rescue impossible. At the time, it was the third worst mountaineering disaster in history in terms of lives lost.

All three Colorado members of the expedition made the summit and descended safely, just hours before the heavens unleashed hell on Denali. Howard Snyder, Paul Schlichter

and Jerry Lewis were the Colorado contingent, a strong group of young climbers in their early 20s who had earned their stripes by climbing Long’s Peak in the winter, scaling the Tetons in Wyoming and ascending lofty, high-altitude volcanoes in Mexico. Headstrong, confident and determined, as young men often are, the group set its sights on America’s highest point with Snyder in the lead. The most experienced member of the group, Snyder found a friend and climbing partner in Schlichter, whom he met at Boys State in 1962. Lewis, another friend of Snyder’s, joined the duo as the third member.

To climb Denali in 1967, teams had to consist of at least four members to be granted access by the National Park Service. The Colorado team did have a fourth member, but

that person was injured in a car accident just prior to departure to the mountain. Forced by the park service to join teams with a less-organized yet equally ambitious Seattle team or abandon the climb all together, the Coloradans hesitantly joined forces with the nine-person Seattle team led by a climber named Joe Wilcox.

“We had to traverse by foot to reach the base of Denali,” recalls Schlichter, “and that’s where we got to know Joe Wilcox’s team.”

Schlichter, now 65, is a retired Air Force pilot whose speech is calm, confident and centered as he recalls the events 43 years later. “Some of the personality conflicts that have been reported were overblown, but the teams did suffer from a lack of cohesive leadership.”

By all accounts, the involuntary meshing of teams brought about unexpected dynamics. Snyder and Wilcox assumed the roles of co-leaders, though Snyder’s Colorado team had the edge in experience and cohesiveness. By the time the 12 climbers had reached high camp at 19,000 feet, the group had broken off into three distinct factions.

Wilcox had in some ways defected from his group of northwest climbers and aligned himself with the trio of Coloradans, who had stuck together throughout. Four of the Seattle climbers had been strong on the climb, but opted for a rest day at high camp while the remaining four struggled to fight up the peak. It was decided that Wilcox would join the three Coloradans for the first summit push, while the others would make their attempts on subsequent days.

Wilcox and the Coloradans made the summit while the eight remaining climbers stayed in high camp, building their energy for their own attempts. One of the climbers in the Seattle group chose to descend to Camp 6 at 15,000 feet with the four men returning from the summit.

Those five men were in the relative safety of a lower camp as the other seven men remained high on the summit ridge at 19,000 feet.

What followed was one of the most vicious storms on record.

Punishing the mountain for more than 10 days, the powerful storm system swept away the lives of the seven high on the mountain while the five men lower on the peak — the three Coloradans and two Seattle climbers — were able to escape alive.

The survivors had been in touch with the National Park Service, but rescue efforts were hampered by bad

weather and poor internal communication by the NPS. “I remember they sent a C-130 to search for the men on the mountain.”

Schlichter says. “We volunteered to fly along to help spot the missing climbers, as we had good knowledge of where they were on the mountain.

We were told no civilians were allowed on the search-and-rescue planes. I wasn’t a civilian. I was a newly commissioned officer in the Air Force. They still refused to let me on board.”

The aftermath of the tragic events were later recounted by Howard Snyder in his 1973 book The Hall of the Mountain King and more recently by James Tabor’s 2007 title Forever on the Mountain. Controversy around the event swirled, but as the storm calmed, the three Coloradan men left the mountain and, after separating their climbing gear, took their own paths.

Snyder relocated to Canada.

Lewis remained in Castle Rock, and Schlichter entered his career as an Air Force pilot, serving in Vietnam.

“While the events on Denali were tragic, I was more deeply affected by the loss of two fellow pilots and friends in the war. We were closer,” he says. “I have put the events of 1967 in the past and moved on.”

Schlichter is not void of emotion around the past, but comes across as a very centered man who continues to enjoy cycling, hiking and climbing in the outdoors.

Snyder has taken a philosophical approach to the events of the past, while Schlichter has a more practical view. They have remained in touch over the years, and their bond will always be part of American mountain lore. While it was the ambition and hardwired thirst for adventure that drove them to push their limits as boys just out of college, the lives they have lived in the shadow of Denali have defined them as men. The public is being encouraged to attend the CMC event to hear the two men speak of the impact America’s tallest mountain has had in the years that followed one of American’s deadliest mountaineering events.

Perry gets serious

t’s dated, theatrical and overthe-top. In the 35 years since the play’s premiere, it still doesn’t cut black men a lot of slack.

But Tyler Perry’s film adaptation of Ntozoke Shange’s legendary For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf bristles with passion, poetry and ambition. And if his For Colored Girls doesn’t overcome the play’s staginess or Perry’s own limitations as a dramatist, it’s not because he doesn’t give it his best shot, and his best cast — from Thandie Newton and Whoopi to Anika Noni Rose, Loretta Devine and Kerry Washington. He doesn’t embarrass them, himself or the play.

Perry reset this “choreopoem” — seven archetypal women, dancers, delivering monologues — in an inner city apartment building, setting up a community of relatives, neighbors, acquaintances and employees. The high-powered magazine publisher Jo ( Janet Jackson, looking years and pounds younger than her recent Perry films) may live uptown where she suspects her man of cheating. But her employee Crystal (Kimberly Elise, in a moving performance) is stuck in a dingy walk-up and an abusive relationship (Michael Ealy).

Phylicia Rashad plays the nosy landlady, whose “I used to be you” is a favorite bit of advice that few of her tenants heed. There’s sexually assertive bombshell barmaid Tangie (Thandie Newton, ferocious), who uses men and insultingly kicks them out the door in the morning. Juanita (Loretta Devine at her earthiest) is a nurse, struggling to teach neighborhood women safe

sex and what not to put up with in relationships, even though she’s putty in the hands of her two-timing man.

Tangie’s naive younger sister Nyla (Tessa Thompson) is just now coming into her own, sexually.

And their cult-following mom (Whoopi Goldberg, plainly out of practice as an actress) is no help, keeping the sisters apart, judging Tangie for her promiscuity.

Nyla takes dance lessons from a great role model, Yasmine (Anika Noni Rose of Dreamgirls), a proud woman who keeps her distance from men, but conveys a sexy, self-assured gentility. And Kelly (Kerry Washington, wonderfully wounded) is the social worker who stumbles into some of these lives, mainly due to Crystal’s unraveling home life.

It’s a movie built on verbal flourishes, playwright Shange’s purple turns of phrase. Juanita doesn’t just confront her man (Richard Lawson). She lights him up — lyrically.

“I have loved you assiduously for eight months, two weeks and a day.”

A visit to a back-alley abortionist (Macy Gray) sees her decrying the “six blocks of cruelty” they all live in.

“Being colored is a metaphysical dilemma I haven’t conquered yet” is the mantra here, a “dark phrase” that sums up these women as they face rape, murder, abortion and betrayal.

That high-minded language, delivered with “This is my close-up” bravado by the various players, can’t help but provoke eye-rolling, on occasion.

Perry’s additions to the script are more matter-offact than florid (he had to provide the plot), and he can’t quite commit to making this a more artful take on the play. We can fret over what a real stage-to-screen wizard like Julie Taymor (The Tempest, Across the Universe) would have done with this material — something more daring, certainly.

But Perry’s great gift to this unfilmable play is getting it on the screen, his sharp eye for casting and his evident affection and sympathy for black womanhood, even in movies in which he doesn’t don a dress. ® 2010, The Orlando Sentinel —MCT Respond: letters@boulderweekly.com

Faithfully following the formula

rom King Lear to Psycho, some of the great popular art has confronted human evil and depravity with an eye as unblinking as Marion Crane’s after a visit from Mrs. Bates. By transcending boundaries of disreputable genres built on bloodlust, our shrewdest artists have made something of such stories beyond mere cruelty.

Then there’s everything else, a little (or a lot) further down the durability scale. I doubt anyone who has read one, two or all three of the late Stieg Larsson’s bestsellers, referred to as the Millennium trilogy (or, informally, the “Dragon Tattoo” trilogy), believes they’re reading something for the ages. Who cares?

It’s enough that the borderline-superhuman heroine at the center, bisexual computer wizard and sexual abuse survivor Lisbeth Salander, exacts bittersweet revenge on the men who very nearly destroy her.

We like that sort of thing. We are a hypocritical species, shaking our heads at the sadism while awaiting, with pumping heart and bated breath, the righteous and 36 November 4, 2010

The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest brings to a close the hugely popular trilogy of thrillers written by Swedish journalist and editor Larsson. Those who are all in, as they say, will surely feel compelled to pay the money and see this publishing and cinematic phenomenon through to the end.

Pity the unsuspecting moviegoer wandering into Larsson’s trilogy at the two-thirds point. That moviegoer will be confused.

Hornet’s Nest begins with Salander in the hospital, critically injured, accused of a triple murder. Meanwhile, down at the spacious, industrial-Swedish-funk loft offices of Millennium magazine, her champion and one-time lover, the journalist Blomkvist, is digging down into a massive government conspiracy. Those protected by the shadow government inside the government include a Soviet defector who is Salander’s father, whom she torched

(literally) long ago.

Larsson’s lead characters have less to do in this wrap-up. As Larsson wrote it, and screenwriter and exposition-condenser Ulf Rydberg adapted it, it’s a rather wobbly blend of courtroom drama and loose ends tied, albeit rather leisurely. In its depiction of Sweden as a cesspool of fascism and brutally repressive sexism, the trilogy is just unformulaic enough to interest fans of the serial-killer and conspiracy genres. Yet it’s also just formulaic enough to make individual directors essentially irrelevant.

I liked the notes struck at the end between Noomi Rapace, the series’ fine, fierce Lisbeth, and Michael Nyqvist as Blomkvist. The book ended differently; the movie has the guts to let things dangle. Both actors have gotten high-profile international work off this lucrative series. Rapace is in the next Sherlock Holmes film opposite Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law; Nyqvist has signed on for Mission: Impossible IV. Director David Fincher is filming the English-language remake of Dragon Tattoo. After Fincher made the exemplary, haunting Zodiac he told more than one interviewer that he hoped he’d fashioned the last serial killer movie. So much for that fiscally irresponsible statement.

Colony Square and Twin Peaks. — Rene Rodriguez Easy A The story of a girl who gains a reputation as her high school’s No. 1 skank after her white lie about a boring weekend, Easy A is neither as smart nor as funny as it wants to be. Emma Stone’s character embraces her shame, and the pretend shenanigans ensue.

The movie is up-to-the-minute with text gossip and webcam narration, but a bit over the top. Rated PG-13. At Flatiron, Colony Square and Twin Peaks. — Sheri Linden Fair Game A suspense-filled glimpse into the dark corridors of political power, Fair Game is a riveting action-thriller based on the autobiography of real-life undercover CIA operative Valerie Plame (Naomi Watts), whose career was destroyed and marriage strained to its limits when her covert identity was illegally exposed. As a covert officer in the CIA’s Counter-Proliferation Division, Valerie leads an investigation into the existence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Valerie’s husband, diplomat Joe Wilson (Sean Penn), is drawn into the investigation to substantiate an alleged sale of enriched uranium from Niger. But when the administration ignores his findings and uses the issue to support the call to war, Joe writes a New York Times editorial outlining his conclusions and igniting a firestorm of controversy. At Esquire. — Landmark Theaters A Film Unfinished At the end of World War II, 60 minutes of raw film, having sat undisturbed in an East German archive, was discovered. Shot by the Nazis in Warsaw in May 1942, and labeled simply “Ghetto,” the footage quickly gained traction as an important historical document, and has been used by archivists and documentary filmmakers over the past several decades to show what life was like in the ghetto. The images — accepted as reality — have now been proven to be a cinematic deception, as the Nazis had staged nearly all the scenes. The discovery of a long-missing fifth reel revealed the elaborate ruse: outtakes depict staged and choreographed scenes taken from various angles, even unintentionally capturing glimpses of SS cameramen behind the scenes. Much of what was once regarded as fact has been given a new truth. A Film Unfinished presents the entire film for the first time — carefully noting fictionalized sequences that falsely show “the good life” enjoyed by Jewish urbanites — and probes deep into the making of a now-infamous Nazi propaganda film. This wholly unsatisfying variation on “what lies beyond” shows him to be illsuited to the subject and to the sort of tale that involves setting three disparate characters on a path toward one another for a finale that isn’t so much a payoff as a “Yeah, and?” Rated PG-13. At Flatiron, Century and Colony Square. — Roger Moore Inception Blithely summarized, Inception’s plot would seem confusing and impenetrable.

Confusing? No doubt, and that’s what makes the film so enjoyable, as we try to tease and puzzle out what is really going on.

Impenetrable? Hardly. Simply put, mainstream moviemaking just doesn’t get any better than Inception. Rated PG-13. Norton vs. De Niro in a cage-match smashdown. Sounds like acting heaven. And it might have been, had Stone known what it wanted to be. This claustrophobic drama centers on a series of interviews between prison parole officer Jack (Robert De Niro), facing retirement and ambivalent about his job, and inmate Stone (Edward Norton), convicted in an arson/murder case in which he was mostly along for the ride. Butler The Town The Town is violent but soft-hearted and clearly digs the grungy allure of its Boston criminal world, where the bank robbers disguise themselves as ghoulish nuns. This is a one-last-job movie. Doug angles to make one last score with the gang and go clean.

Hot-headed Jem wants the heists to continue. Everything gets complicated when a hostage doesn’t recognize her captors and becomes involved with Doug. All in all, an enjoyable film, if a tad too long. ired of looking for iPhone apps to keep you occupied while you wait in line for a coffee and a sandwich? Well, now there is an app for skipping that line entirely.

A Boulder-based company, Splick·It, has developed an iPhone app that allows its users to skip the lines at some of their favorite restaurants with a few flicks of their finger. The idea came from one of the company’s workers who used to own a coffee shop in Boulder and was tired of watching her customers wait in line.

“Our users love saving time,” says Gordon Boyes, chief executive officer of Splick·It. “With the app, you are using your travel time more effectively. You don’t have to wait when you get your coffee in the morning or during the lunch-time rush. You save time and make your life easier.”

To use the Splick·It app, users select a restaurant or café from the list of available eateries on the phone, which will then bring the restaurant’s menu onto the screen. From there, customers can customize items and write notes for their order before adding them to their cart.

After filling out an order, users can then set a pick-up time (a minimum of 15 minutes for food and 5 minutes for coffee) and then pay (the app will save your payment information after the first time you input it). At the restaurant, your order will be ready and waiting for you at a designated pick-up area. No

lines, no cash register, no waiting.

“It’s very intuitive, and there are only a few screens you need to go through,” says Boyes. “It’s all touch screens, so with a few taps you can hold the mayo or add milk to your coffee. It’s easier to get what you want, the way you want, when you want it.”

Several local Boulder eateries as well as several Colorado chain restaurants have partnered with Splick·It since the app came out in June. The list of restaurants now includes Snarf ’s, Atlas Purveyors, Ziggi’s, Pita Pit, Smiling Moose, Amante Coffee, Brewing Market, Flatiron Coffee, Corner Coffee Bar and Rueben’s Burger Bistro, and Splick·It is planning to add more restaurants in the near future, including Illegal Pete’s.

“We really worked with a lot of companies in Boulder,” says Boyes. “It all started locally and the relationship is great. We really want to bring these Boulder and Colorado places into it. We love the folks we’ve been working with and we want to add more

merchants and more options for the users.”

The app is available for free through the Apple app store and is compatible with an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. An app for Android phones is also in the works and could be out by the end of the month. In addition, Splick·It offers apps that feature the same service but are designed to work with specific restaurants like Snarf ’s and Smiling Moose. While those apps don’t have the selection of the original Splick·It app, they are much quicker and convenient for people who frequent those particular restaurants often.

Boyes says that Splick·It is still hoping to make some improvements to the app. He wants to include a map feature that will show locations closest to the user’s location as well as connect the app to social media sites like Facebook and Twitter so people can share their dining experiences.

“Today’s user wants to post to Facebook or Twitter,” he says. “At the end of the day, we want to make this app a rich, mobile social experience for the consumer.”

But for now, Boyes says he has gotten lots of positive feedback from people who have said the app has made their lives less hectic, whether that means shortening their morning commute to work or not having to occupy a van full of hungry kids in line.

“We’ve all had that experience where we walk into our favorite place to eat and walked out because the line was too long,” says Boyes. “We’ve all been there.

With this app you will never experience that again.

“It’s a pretty cool experience to walk into a place with a long line and have your food already waiting for you. It’s almost like a VIP experience.”

es my friends, the time has come. A whole month of pumpkin desserts.

Shout it from the rooftops, do your happy dance — or making the first dessert in the pumpkin-palooza series will do.

Honey Ginger Pumpkin Pie is the treat. A simple and delicious take on a pumpkin pie. I typically get a lot of requests for pumpkin desserts that aren’t a pie, and those will come later, but for now, pie it is!

I am using milk instead of cream, and doing a lot of the sweetening with honey. Mixing honey with the spices and extra ginger makes for a wonderful take on a traditional dessert. I am calling for the canned version in this recipe, but you can use fresh pumpkin just as easily.

Remember, when using the can, buy the pure pumpkin and not the pumpkin filling, and when making your own pumpkin puree, make sure you use sugar pie or baby bear pumpkins.

Don’t you love those names for pumpkins? Sounds like a Southern woman calling her man, or construction workers doing their thang!

This pie will hold true to the saying “easy as pie.” I never understood that phrase, as a lot of pies really aren’t that easy for people who don’t tinker too much in the kitchen, but this one will be easy and, of course, “cute as pie.” I don’t understand that one either.

Now, turkey-themed or pumpkin cupcakes — those are cute. Wine in a turkey goblet, that’s really cute. But pie, just darn good, and this twist will have everyone back for a second piece.

Oh, I’m also making gingerwhipped cream to dollop on top.

Yeah, that’s just how I roll in November.

Get used to it, you have three more pumpkin-palooza treats coming your way. Isn’t that sweet as pie?

Now that one I get!

So trot on down (apparently turkeys trot; just keeping it Thanksgiving day-relevant) to Pettyjohn’s, grab a pumpkin beer (very cute) and get to baking.

Now follow the directions, put some love into it and invite me over when it’s done.

Honey Ginger Pumpkin Pie 2 eggs 1/2 cup honey 1 15-ounce can pure pumpkin (or 1 1/2 cups fresh pumpkin puree) 3/4 cup milk (I used 1 percent) 1/2 tsp. cloves 1 tsp. cinnamon 1/4 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. powdered ginger One unbaked deep-dish pie crust Whipped cream (recipe below) Crystallized ginger for garnish (if desired)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees, place foil over a baking sheet. Place unbaked pie crust on sheet and set aside.

In small bowl, whisk eggs and honey until well blended. In large bowl, stir together pumpkin and milk. Add cloves, cinnamon, salt and ginger.

Whisk egg and honey mixture into pumpkin mixture, stir until creamy and smooth. Pour into pie crust. Bake for 45-50 minutes until crust is golden. Take out and let cool completely.

When ready to serve, cut into slices, dollop with whipped cream and garnish with crystallized ginger.

Whipped Cream 1 cup heavy whipped cream 1 tsp. vanilla 2 tbsp. powdered sugar (or to taste)

Beat all ingredients until stiff peaks form. I added 1/2 tsp. ginger in my whipped cream to complement the pie. Try it, it’s great!
