Central to his campaign was this earnest pledge: “In the U.S. Senate, I intend to continue leading the fight to stop Agenda 21.”

In this world of woes, you might have missed the dire danger that Agenda 21 poses to our Republic. It’s a 20-year-old, non-binding United Nations resolution promoting sustainable development and smart-growth plans around the world. No less of a communist agent than George Bush the First signed onto it for our nation, and no visible harm has resulted.

n Nov. 6, the city charter of Longmont banned fracking from its city limits.

In doing so, Longmont overcame the influence of corporations powerful enough to have the full public blessing of presidential candidates, our governor and most local politicians to one degree or another. The oil and gas industry was able to find $500,000 in its back pocket to throw at the problem of a citizenry disillusioned and moved to action.

Some of the names on that list of industrial contributors against Ballot Question 300 ranged from the corrupt to the outright murderous. All of them wished to confuse and exploit the community for nothing more than profit and dividends. They tried through threat and deception to do just this.

Longmont never blinked, and today fracking is banned in the town. As a result, the movement against hydraulic fracturing and for the safety of our families and communities has entered a new and higher phase. Beyond the intimidation of industry and state politicians, there were also other highly relevant hurdles that the people of Longmont pushed out of their way.

One of these is the illusion and concessionary idea that hydraulic fractur-

ing can be done safely, and that it can be regulated by the very state apparatus that is now suing Longmont for ridding itself of fracking.

By approving Ballot Question 300, Longmont did not seek to introduce symbolic and meaningless regulations, and it did not ask vacant politicians to protect its homes. It cut the Gordian knot on the issue and delivered a victory based on community need, science and genuine self-defense.

This is particularly difficult for a community to do. At every stage, the voices of science and community have been told to bend to the will of the oil and gas industry. The general social forces that have propagated this idea come from every manner of political office and include select environmental leaders.

The argument advanced is very simple in its formulation, even if its consequences complicate the movement against fracking in every way.

What’s behind the argument is the notion that fracking is inevitable and that to fight it in its entirety is simply not politically possible. To ignore this bit of advice means being shut out of the offices of our so-called representatives. It means political isolation. It see COMMENTARY Page 8

means the only governmental figures that we have willingly and with great determination ignore our concerns and return to the same business as usual that leads to the inevitable poisoning and loss of our communities.

As to the politicians themselves, I will ignore the question “What kind of person is able to do such a thing — to ignore people fighting to protect their families from the threat of a toxic industrialization forcing itself upon them?” This question does not need to be answered. Every genuine person reading these words already knows.

Instead of attempting to rid ourselves of another empirically toxic fossil fuel, we are told instead to be “credible,” which, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, is defined as “Offering reasonable grounds for being believed.”

So what is this credibility, or the grounds for being believed by our officials, based on? Is it based on the study of the Colorado School of Public Health that showed elevated cancer rates within a half mile of fracking sites? Is it based in the research of toxicologist Theo Colborn, who has exposed the deadly mix of chemicals in fracking fluid and their effects on our health? Is it based on the exhaustive research of Shane Davis about the failing of the industry and government alike? Or is our credibility based, in this particular circumstance, on the politicians’ unwavering and cynical view that to defy the profits of the oil and gas industry is to pull at the fabric of their personal political ambitions and of larger economic forces, and therefore not negotiable in any real

sense?

You see, if we follow the best science that is available, we cannot be credible. To be credible is a function of bending to the political will of elected and appointed individuals and, by extension, to the profits of the oil and gas companies. If we offer capitulations point blank to a lying and enormously destructive industry, we are given the respect and time of our representatives.

If we fight for the safety of our families and homes, we are disingenuous, shunned and marginalized as a force of misled individuals and groups.

One does not have to look far for examples of this type of thinking. Take the Colorado Environmental Coalition, for example, which is telling people and representatives: “Colorado needs 1,000-foot setbacks from homes and requirements that industry use best available technology to mitigate the impacts to our air and water.”

Where does the 1,000-foot setback figure come from? While it alludes to an idea that setbacks can determine a level of safety for our children, there is absolutely no scientific study that suggests a safe distance from hydraulic fracturing, and the authors of this demand are well aware of this fact.

Instead, the figure is physical representation of the Orwellian science of political capitulation, nothing else.

Many so-called environmentalist groups and leaders have similar, madeup figures that do nothing for science and health but go a long way to accommodate the oil and gas companies. Most recently, Rep. Jared Polis (D-Boulder) claimed: “A 500-foot buf-

fer around residences is a sensible approach to ensuring that Boulder County residents are not exposed to hazardous chemicals used in and resulting from fracking, while still allowing the extraction of natural gas in less populated areas.”

If 500 feet is safe, surely Mr. Polis can show us what he is reading that leads him to educate the rest of us on this fact. Again, the 500-foot figure told to us by Polis, one of the proponents of the Frac Act, has no basis in reality except the reality of capitulation.

What game are we are playing now, especially in view of the tremendous, authoritative and uncompromising victory in Longmont? The game of setbacks and other quasi measures that are supposed to make us feel better about the gas industry is nothing short of toxic roulette, a tangible negotiating of acceptable levels of poisoning. And this game we are playing, and that we are being told to play by various environmental groups and political leaders, is not being done in the name of science.

It is for the “credible” benefit of industrial profit. Hydraulic fracturing is poisonous. It is a process being conducted by private multinational corporations that have taken ownership of the political system and that are now forcing themselves into our communities and aquifers, our air and land, and all for the prospect of massive financial enrichment. These are not charities, and they do not care about the lives of our people. The gas companies will disappear as soon as the financial incentives are gone, and we will be left with countless insults to our health and

an environmental destruction that will extend for generations to come.

Is this the force that we should be accommodating in our efforts? Should we willingly pay lip service to their messengers and base our strengths on concessions to their mineral rights and profits? Let’s embrace the heights that Longmont compels us to as a movement. Let’s use the science and the studies that exist and that are becoming more available at every stage. We do not need, and should openly defy, any force suggesting that minimal demands will buy us a seat at the table, regardless of who asserts it. That table is the property of Encana and Anadarko, not the citizens of Colorado, and the lungs and health of our children are not items up for negotiation.

The sooner we take ownership of this fact, the truer we become to the issue itself and to the science that commands us to fight hydraulic fracturing to begin with.

The politics of accommodation does not work when it comes to our health and welfare. The days of retreat are now behind us, and Ballot Question 300 has opened up a new chapter in this fight. Now it is time for our offensive.

When history is written about the defense of Colorado from profit and pollution, this can be one of our bravest and proudest moments.

Ban fracking, fight concession and speak the truth. We truly have a world to gain.

But in the end Otrona sold fewer than 10,000 machines. One reason for this was that the Attaché was based on the Z-80 microprocessor, a chip that was found in most first-generation personal computers.

In 1981, a few months before Otrona opened its doors, IBM entered the personal computer market with a computer — the IBM PC — based on Intel’s 8088, a more powerful chip.

IBM’s machine was not a portable,

but it established hardware and software standards (including use of the 8088 chip) that most personal computer companies adopted, which meant Otrona was playing catch-up almost from the day it opened its doors.

“Our problem wasn’t technical; running a business was too much for us,” Lingemann said. “We were making sales of the 2001 … we just couldn’t figure out a way to do things inexpensively enough to make a profit.”

The company needed another round of venture capital to keep going, and the venture capitalists said no.

When the company pulled the plug in September 1984, it had 160 employees.

“It was a nice ride,” Lingemann

said. “I wish I had the resources to do it again. If I knew then what I know now, we probably would have succeeded.”

I asked Lingemann if he had any thoughts about what it takes to be an entrepreneur.

“You have to really know yourself,” he said. “You should choose your employees and your partners really carefully. You have to have a vision, and you have to believe what you are doing is worthwhile; it’s not just a moneymaking thing. Why would you want to do something less? Otherwise it’s just work.”

THE WIZARD OF NORQUIST What used to be a pledge of allegiance to the United States has in more recent times become a pledge of allegiance by Republican politicians to just one dorky-looking guy named Grover Norquist and his infamous “no new taxes” platform.

Not to belittle the man, but who gives a rat’s ass about a pledge invented by some nobody fundraising type whose most important contribution to our democracy so far is laundering money for crooked lobbyist Jack Abramoff. Are we the people really going to get pushed off the fiscal cliff just because Republican politicians are afraid they can’t get reelected if they offend this guy? The answer is likely yes, because it isn’t Norquist that these spineless politicos fear.

Thanks to the research of Lee Fang, investigative reporter for The Nation, we now know who is behind the curtain of the all-powerful Wizard of Norquist.

Surprise! It’s a handful of billionaires who personally benefit by avoiding paying the kind of high tax rates that their secretaries are subjected to.

Americans for Tax Reform, Norquist’s group, receives more than 60 percent of its total funding from just two groups: The Center to Protect Patients Rights, which gave more than $4 million to Norquist, and Crossroads GPS, which also contributed more than $4 million. The former is an organization the Koch brothers use to funnel money to their pet causes, and the latter is the group of uberwealthy donors run by Norquist’s evil political twin Karl Rove.

Translation: Our elected Republican representatives in Congress have pledged their allegiance to a few billionaires like the Koch brothers, Steve Bechtel of Bechtel Corporation and the Blackstone Group’s Steve Schwarzman, while pushing the rest of us off the cliff. Makes you wonder what they won’t sell.

LAWS WE SHOULDN’T NEED, BUT APPARENTLY DO Did we used to have more common sense, or have we always been so ignorant as a species that we need really bizarre laws to protect us from ourselves?

For instance, it’s illegal in Maryland to take a lion into a theater. We actually need that law?

There’s a federal law that says you can be fined up to $1 million for committing genocide. Is that really an effective deterrent for the likes of Adolf Hitler, Pol Pot and George Armstrong Custer? Apparently this law came after the West was won? In California you can’t bathe two babies at the same time in the same tub.

Does this mean that washing two babies in two separate tubs in two separate rooms is actually preferable?

And now comes Colorado’s entry into the weird laws category. The U.S. Forest service has just announced that it is no longer legal to do your recreational shooting at night in Lefthand Canyon or the Nederland dump. This new law assumes people have actually been shooting guns at night in our local forest and thought this was a good idea.

Look at the bright side, all you angry, former nighttime gun shooters, at least you can still take your lion to the movies in Boulder.

As grievances with prairie dogs continue to grow throughout the West and colonies are being demolished, someone needs to be a strong voice for these tiny creatures. The Prairie Dog Coalition is dedicated to the protection of imperiled prairie dogs and restoration of their ecosystems.

A fortunate few have seen prairie dogs as they nibble on grass, run between burrows, touch noses and kiss.

And it’s heartbreaking to know one day their presence may be gone. Survival of the prairie dog is critical to the continued existence of the prairie ecosystem—one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world.

Nine different wildlife species depend on prairie dog populations and their habitat for their survival.

Endangered black-footed ferrets, owls, hawks, foxes and about 200 other species are associated with prairie dogs and their habitat.

By planning ahead and working prairie dogs into open space plans, we can help direct their path of migration to the best habitats for them. By setting aside conservation areas for this native, keystone animal we can enjoy the prairie dogs and their associated species in our natural environment.

Prairie dogs now occupy just 2 percent to 8 percent of their historic range, and without serious conservation efforts, they may soon disappear. We have a responsibility to do everything we can to help the prairie dog ecosystem recover so that future generations can enjoy healthy wildlife populations, too.

Training volunteers and professional wildlife biologists on the latest nonlethal techniques to manage prairie dog populations humanely is a good first step to help protect these animals and restore their ecosystems. The impact of this federal stimulus funding has been more than saving money on energy bills or fighting climate change. It was a life preserver. It helped build an industry, developing a community-based program that is costeffective and making a difference in the lives of our neighbors.

Private enterprises don’t do it all, and we can’t do it alone — the public sector can start the ball rolling and continue to set the ground rules. By being inclusive of local businesses, these public initiatives can encourage economic development and foster innovation.

osh Fox, the creator of Gasland, the documentary film that helped catalyze national activism against hydraulic fracturing, will be the guest speaker at an anti-fracking fundraiser in Boulder on Dec. 2.

The event will also feature live music (including Fox on his banjo), some of the state’s top “fractivists” and Fox’s mother, founder of The Mothers Project.

Money generated by the fundraiser will go to the organization Be the Change USA to help the city of Longmont mount a legal defense of its oil and gas regulations and voterapproved fracking ban, as well as toward an effort to pass statewide anti-fracking water initiatives.

“Be the Change, Jamming for a Frack Free Colorado,” being held from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Unity of Boulder Spiritual Center, will feature a silent auction and live performances from members of Elephant Revival, Laura Goldhamer, Michael Bellmont of Our Longmont, Earth Guardians, Konundrum and Pressure Point. Caile says activists from other Colorado counties, including Huerfano and Adams, are expected to attend, alongside participants like Doe, Wilson, Sam Schabacker of Food and Water Watch and Shane Davis, a leading researcher on the impacts of fracking in Colorado and chair of the Poudre Canyon group of the Sierra Club. (Davis will deliver a presentation on Boulder County fracking trends, research and activism at the Unity church from 4 to 7 p.m. on Dec. 8.)

The Dec. 2 fundraiser for Be the Change will be followed by a “Do the Math” presentation on climate change by Bill McKibben and 350.org, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Glenn Miller Ballroom at the University of Colorado Boulder’s University Memorial Center.

Caile describes it as a “double whammy,” and Wilson adds that “it’s a real treat for Boulderites to get them both.”

In addition to providing a forum for planning the local anti-fracking movement’s next steps, Caile describes the Be the Change event as “a way to have a celebration and have fun together, because we’ve had a lot of sleepless nights.”

Doe agrees, saying the Longmont vote can serve as inspiration for future efforts.

“Democratic action should trump property rights,” he says. “It just proves that organized people can beat organized money, which is pretty rewarding, when you think about it.”

The final public hearing on Boulder County’s new land use code and moratorium regarding oil and gas operations is scheduled for the 4 p.m. county commissioners meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 4, in the county courthouse on the Pearl Street Mall.

s Boulder County struggles to rewrite its current oil and gas regulations, the petroleum extraction industry has already begun its blitzkrieg of our lands. As clearly illustrated by the maps above, a wave of environmental and property value destruction is rolling into Boulder County from Weld County to the east like a tsunami. And it is a tsunami that has the potential to undo a half-century of progressive land use decisions that have helped shape Boulder County into one of the nation’s most desirable places to live.

What took a half-century to create and protect may well be lost forever in the next three to five years if our county and city leaders fail to take bold action to confront the threat rather than seekBoulder Weekly

T

hree figures were all author and environmental activist Bill McKibben needed to fuel his national roadshow. Do the Math, put together by McKibben, president and co-founder of 350.org, will follow up on McKibben’s breakthrough Rolling Stone article “Global Warming’s Terrifying New Math,” in which he introduced the American public to three figures: 2 degrees Celsius, the maximum the average temperature of the planet can increase to prevent widespread catastrophes; 565 gigatons, the estimated amount of carbon dioxide humans can add to the atmosphere to stay within the 2-degree Celsius limit; and 2,795 gigatons, the amount of carbon in proven coal, oil and gas reserves waiting to be burned as fossil fuels.

McKibben says he hopes to use stops in 21 cities across the nation to engage students and community members in taking on the fossil fuel industry.

Along with him, a cast of artists, actors and musicians has also committed to appear via video.

“I’m kind of used to going in and giving different speeches, but this [Do the Math talk] is going to be different,” McKibben says. “I’ll be talking, there will be lots of music and video, and other people joining in, and it’s more kind of an organizing event.”

The action McKibben is organizing people around is divestment, a strategy of pressuring governments and industries to change by getting local organizations like universities, churches and pension

funds to stop investing in them. The method is credited with pushing the South African government to end apartheid.

McKibben says he hopes that divestment strategy, along with the math and figures he introduced in the Rolling Stone article, will have the same effect on the climate crisis.

“Part of it will just be making sure that everybody has that math well in hand, and partly it will be trying to launch the divestment campaign, and I kind of talk about it a little bit in that article, but now it’s real,” he says. “We’re going to really try and get colleges, churches and everybody else hard at

work, making their money do the same thing that their heart and mind want to.”

“Divestment is a very powerful tool in the world of social change for a very long time and we’re really grateful that Bill McKibben and 350 are pursuing divestment,” says Leslie Glustrom, the director of research and policy at Clean Energy Action, a local group advocating for decreased fossil fuel use. “It’s unconscionable at this point to invest our money with companies that are dedicated to adding more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, along with other pollutants.”

While it is important for people to take actions to help with climate change in their individual lives, Glustrom says, that’s not nearly enough given the size of the problem.

“This is a problem of global scale, so we need to reach on a scale that matches the scale of the challenge,” she says. “And we can really only do that when we come together and work in teams to bring lower carbon solutions to our energy problems.”

The ‘Do the Math’ events include video appearances by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Kumi Naidoo and Naomi Klein, among other musicians, artists and actors. McKibben says that he hopes bringing in key people will emphasize the gravity of the message.

“I think it will just help show people what a big, worldwide, spread-out movement this is,” he says.

A Tale of Two Runners

Boulder ultramarathon athletes Sage Canaday and Cameron Clayton finally face each other to conclude the 2012 season in San Francisco

ne was a collegiate runner from the East. One was a collegiate runner from the West. One was showered in champagne at the end of his first ultramarathon, while the other received five stitches after his ultramarathon debut. One goes by Sage Canaday. One goes by Cameron Clayton. Both are runners from Boulder with nothing in common — and everything in common.

And these two will compete against each other for the first time on Dec. 1 in San Francisco.

This race, the 50-mile North Face Endurance Challenge Championship, is generally considered to be the championship 50-mile race of the 2012 season. In the elite field where the average age is 33, the dark-haired Canaday and the neon-blonde Clayton will be two of the youngest runners in the field.

The 27-year-old Canaday and 24-year-old Clayton debuted into the world of ultramarathon racing this year, and the two are among the most talked-about novices in ultrarunning forums across the nation.

al winter of despair. With one sock soggy from the stream of blood trickling down from his knee, Canaday finished his first 50-kilometer race on March 16. In three hours, 49 minutes and 28 seconds, he traversed trails in the northwestern corner of Washington through rain, snow and mud.

“When I finished,” Canaday blogged, “I stumbled at the line. Dizzy from the low blood sugar and a loss of blood I started tipping backwards, but fortunately I was caught by race director Krissy Moehl.”

His reward at the finish line: second place and five stitches in his knee from an ER doctor in the race’s medical tent.

Clayton made his ultra debut during the summer of hope. Among the sun-kissed, yellow aspens above Steamboat Springs on Sept. 15, Clayton entered, completed and won his first ultramarathon — the Run Rabbit Run 50-miler. Largely on his own for the majority of the race, he crushed Zeke Tiernan — also a CU cross-country alumnus — by a half hour and dropped the course record by two minutes.

August, his 6:16:10 time along the White River 50’s woodland trail in the shadow of Mt. Rainier in Washington broke a course record previously clocked by two-time Leadville 100 champion Anton Krupicka. Canaday bested Krupicka’s twoyear record on the 50-mile course by approximately nine minutes.

After securing a spot on the USA Mountain Running Team in early September, Canaday took a brief hiatus from ultramarathons. In the northern Italian Alps he scampered up steep mountains at the World Mountain Running Championship and suffered debilitating hamstring cramps in the avalanche-prone mountains at the Jungfrau Marathon in Switzerland.

After the Run Rabbit Run, Clayton took only 12 hours off and began training again the follow morning. A break too short, Clayton admits, but he says he now feels ready to race Canaday in the North Face 50.

“I feel I’m as fit as I’ve ever been,” Clayton says.

“I’ll have to be, because the competition is going to be really good.”

Clayton isn’t alone in his sentiments. The online Colorado running community RunColo called Saturday’s field “the most competitive ultra field ever,” and iRunFar, an online forum for ultramarathoners, called the entry list “jaw dropping.”

However, Canaday seems slightly underwhelmed, since two of the top ultramarathon runners in Colorado, Boulder-based Krupicka and Durango native Dakota Jones, will not be competing.

The New Balance-sponsored Krupicka said he will sit this competition out due to mounting fatigue in previous weeks and a recent bout with the flu.

But on the starting line with Canaday and Clayton Saturday morning will be defending champion and course record holder Mike Wolfe, in addition to Adam Campbell — who bested Canaday at the Chuckanut 50K. With Krupicka and Jones out of the race, both Canaday and Clayton say they feel that they have a better shot at taking home the title.

The University of Colorado Museum of Natural History is presenting a free lecture titled “Polar Animals and Their Changing Climate: A Visual and Educational Tour of Earth’s Iciest Regions.” The Dec. 4 presentation features the work of Boulder-based photographer Glen Delman, accompanied by narration from

Delman, a professional photographer and outdoors lover, chose the photos for the Polar Animals slideshow from trips to the Arctic and Antarctica on behalf of an adventure travel company. lecture may be surprising to those who avoid global climate talk in favor of pretty penguins. Berlin, who earned her Ph.D. in geological sciences from the University of Colorado Boulder, is using the animals and locations of Delman’s pictures to give insight into how this other world interacts with the one we know.

“I think we’re really going to try to highlight Glen’s photographs from different geographical areas,” Berlin says.

“What I try to do is provide some background science on how these polar regions are changing, how we measure change, and then what the impacts of that change are on the habitat for these different animals.”

Rather than interpret models or predictions on the future, Berlin will concentrate on the data at hand. While there will be no extrapolation of rising sea temperatures into a doomsday scenario, she plans to point out observable data of how these habitats have changed. As for where the data comes from, Berlin says that wherever possible she’ll try to mention research by local Boulder folks.

“We have the university and many labs around here that are conducting this research on climate change, so I’ll try to highlight the information our community has found,” Berlin says.

his November and December Killswitch Engage is spending a month looking back at a key point in its career, marking the 10-year anniversary of the release of the band’s second album, Alive Or Just Breathing.

The 2002 album was the band’s first release on Roadrunner Records, and while the band’s next album, 2004’s The End of Heartache, was the major commercial breakthrough for Killswitch Engage, Alive Or Just Breathing remains an album that means a lot to guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz and his bandmates.

“It basically was just the foundation of the start of our career,” says Dutkiewicz (known by his nickname “Adam D” to many fans). “I guess after that record was released and everybody started talking about it, we just felt things really pick up and things just really blossomed after it. It was just so crazy how it just seemed to really, really start everything for us. I think that’s why when we think about it we’re just like wow, that record did a lot for us and meant a lot to us at that time.”

What’s also making the idea of performing the Alive Or Just Breathing CD appealing is Killswitch Engage is more like the band of that era now than it had been since 2002.

At the start of the year, vocalist Howard Jones left Killswitch Engage.

His replacement, interestingly, is Jesse Leach, who was the band’s original singer and the vocalist on the band’s selftitled debut and Alive Or Just Breathing.

“It’s just kind of funny how things ended up with him rejoining the band,” Dutkiewicz says of Leach.

While there is good reason for Dutkiewicz and his bandmates (Leach, bassist Mike D’Antonio, guitarist Joe Stroetzel and drummer Justin Foley) to celebrate Alive Or Just Breathing and what that album did to launch the band’s career, it wasn’t an easy project for the band, or Dutkiewicz, who was still in the early stages of what has since grown into a busy career as a record producer for Killswitch Engage and a host of other bands.

“It was definitely a bit stressful,” Dutkiewicz says. “It was my first record on a larger label. I’d [produced] a lot of like small independent, hardcore labels, metal labels, up to that. And Roadrunner was definitely the biggest client I had been hired by at that point.

Killswitch Engage reflects on old album

“I remember the studio being riddled with technical problems, with guitar issues and tuning issues, amp issues, all that kind of crap. I definitely remember being a little bit stressed out over it.”

Another challenge in doing Alive Or Just Breathing was getting Leach in form for the album.

“He was a big ball of stress,” Dutkiewicz says. “He was battling his throat at that time, of course. That’s when he developed polyps in his throat and was just not really taking care of his voice.

“He’s learned over the years how to actually take care and make sure his vocals don’t get strained,” he adds. “But back then, he would just go for it and just destroy his throat. So it was a battle for him. There would be days when we would work in the studio and we wouldn’t get anything done just because he sounded really hoarse and he couldn’t really control his pitch. It was a nightmare for him.”

The vocal issues, coupled with Killswitch Engage’s heavy touring schedule, which created problems at home for the then-newly married Leach, eventually prompted him to quit the band.

Jones turned out to be a good choice to replace Leach. He held down the

vocalist slot for the group’s next three albums, and he actually started working on the band’s sixth album before deciding he needed to leave Killswitch.

“I love Howard. He’s a great friend of mine,” Dutkiewicz says. “He left for several personal issues I shouldn’t really talk about out of respect for him. I think he’s much happier now. I think he’s feeling less pressure of being in a band. You know, it’s not cut out for everyone. It’s hard to be on the road more than half the year and live out of a suitcase, being stuck with a group of guys in a tour bus and not really having a sense of where your home is.”

The change in vocalists delayed work on the sixth album, but the project is now nearly finished. While the final choice of songs for the album hasn’t been made, Dutkiewicz offered a few hints for what fans can expect.

“It’s a little speedier, a little more aggressive,” he says. “It’s got moments where it sounds like Killswitch, that’s for sure. We just went for a little more aggressive of a record this time.

“It’s got elements of [musical] progression, more metal here and there,” Dutkiewicz says. “We’ve got a lot of faster parts. We got more guitar solos. It feels a little bit more like a metal record.”

visit Scrooge, including the Ghost of the Past, who left another of the performers, Frau Frau, at the altar in a previous life. The absurd comedic duet reminiscing about past love is augmented by the fact that Frau Frau is played in drag by Jim Walker.

Cratchit is not a family man in this production, yet his kin come to life in other ways. Instead of Tiny Tim, Joan Bruemmer gives a raucous turn as Tiny Kim, a disabled woman who only wants to dance.

“There are definitely a couple of things that might put people on edge, but my hope is that they’ll be able to laugh at the things that make us uncomfortable as a form of relief,” Grundei says.

Grundei did choreography for the first scripted production of Moulin Scrooge at the 2006 Improv Olympics in Chicago, and felt it was something to introduce to Colorado theatergoers besides the same old Christmas shows that get done again and again.

“I remember being backstage and just laughing, no matter how many times I saw it,” Grundei says. “I just thought, ‘Why not direct it here?’”

Musical Director Craig Schwartz imbues the show with a range of send-ups, from covering a Ke$ha song to some surprising Elton John moments. A cabaret trapeze somehow makes its way into the mix.

The story does all play together in the end, where each cast member declares what they have learned from the experience.

“It’s a comedic version of what moral lessons are learned,” Grundei says. “It’s all very humorous moral endings that you might raise an eyebrow at if you heard it at the grocery store.”

Local theater companies Band of Toughs and WreckingBall Theater Lab, which have some overlapping members, joined forces for the production.

Despite its intimidating name, Band of Toughs relies on audience participation to fulfill its stated mission of creating work that “puts the ass back in passion — and then kicks it!” WreckingBall Theater Lab echoes the burly sentiment by trumpeting that it has been “demolishing the norm since 2008.”

The nine cast members are local improv performers and actors, who under the direction of Grundei and the choreography of Colleen Mylott have been rehearsing since October. Finding the right mix becomes crucial when telling a story dependent on delivery.

As far as finding the right cast, Grundei says it’s about “people that are really at ease with comedy.

That’s harder to find than good actors. And if you find really good actors who have comedic timing, then that’s golden.”

Skeptics beware: 24th Studio C album a treat

E

very holiday season, KBCO releases its famed Studio C album. Since 1991, the radio station has released compilations of performances done by touring musicians who stop by the station’s studio and donated the proceeds to charity. It has become a type of local holiday tradition — hardcore fans line up early to buy the limited copies of the disc, deserving charities get much-needed donations (station staff guess it has raised between $1.5 million and $2 million), and KBCO basks in the positive attention heaped on its brand.

As popular as the station is, its brand of adult album alternative (AAA) doesn’t appeal to everyone. So for many people, and I include myself in this group, the Studio C album is like any other Christmas album — you hear it a few times, think it’s pleasant, figure “well, I don’t want to stick a drill in my ears, so I guess it wasn’t too bad,” and move onto more substantial music fare.

If there’s any album that has a chance of converting the nonbelievers, or even breaking into your listening rotation, it’s this year’s album, the 24th to be released. It did for me. The talent on this year’s album is easily the best in recent memory.

The 18 tracks on the album include big names like Phil Lesh and Warren Haynes, Wilco, Mumford & Sons, Florence + the Machine, Jimmy Cliff and Steve Earle as well as other lesser-known-but-stillgood groups like Mayer Hawthorne, Alabama Shakes and Blind Pilot.

Probable one-hit wonder Of Monsters and Men opens the album, and Cake gives a loose performance of its No. 1 hit from the late ’90s, “Never There.”

Many performances sound like their respective studio versions, but

the charming thing about the album is hearing the songs performed live, picking out the mistakes and relishing in the humanity of it all. Thanks to technology, audio perfection is readily attainable to artists with resources, so hearing them perform live in a small setting is a treat. Some tracks, like “Little Talks” by Of Monsters and Men and “The Walk” by Mayer Hawthorne, sound too much like the album version to be truly interesting, but that’s not always the case. It’s just Jimmy Cliff and his acoustic guitar playing “Sitting in Limbo,” and Warren Haynes and Phil Lesh perform (though somewhat sloppily) a guitar-bass duet on “Goin’ Down the Road Feelin’ Bad.” Imelda May’s performance of “Mayhem” is lively and driven.

Though Blind Pilot plays it pretty close to the vest on “Half Moon,” hearing the group nail the difficult vocal harmonies live is a testament to the band’s talent. The Lumineers, of Denver, give a solid take of their single “Ho Hey.” Not to say there aren’t some yawn-inducing AAA filler tracks (I’m looking at you, Marc Cohn, Graffiti6 and Michael Kiwanuka), but this album is, overall, pretty exciting. If you’re the type of music fan that wants to donate to charity but thinks, “What’s in it for me?” then buying the Studio C album should hit all of your sweet spots.

This year’s album benefits the Boulder County AIDS Project and the Food Bank of the Rockies.

A surreal take on a classic

‘Anna Karenina’ adaptation employs unique devices

T

olstoy’s classic novel of love and infidelity, Anna Karenina has been brought to stage and screen many times, often with mediocre results due to its complexity. Pay attention: It’s mid-1800s Russia, and Anna (Keira Knightley) is married to Karenin ( Jude Law), a dull but faithful St. Petersburg public servant. When her brother Oblonsky (Matthew Macfadyen) has an affair, Anna travels to Moscow to try to prevent her sisterin-law Dolly’s (Kelly Macdonald) push for a divorce. Meanwhile, Dolly’s lovely younger sister Kitty (Alicia Vikander) is being courted by two men, Konstantin Levin (Domhall Gleeson), an awkward and earnest landowner, and Alexei Vronsky (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), a vain, handsome soldier. Kitty much prefers Vronsky, but once he catches a glimpse of Anna, he’s smitten, and Anna also finds in her heart a passion for Vronsky that she’s never felt with the boring Karenin.

The story proceeds from there, with lots of meaningful glances and many hurtful conversations between Anna and Karenin. He just doesn’t understand why she’s fallen in love with Vronsky, a strutting, self-impressed peacock bachelor soldier. Russian society is shocked by Anna’s scandalous public behavior even as they all become increasingly sympathetic to poor, confused Karenin. To avoid losing his adored Anna entirely, he reluctantly assents to her and Vronsky having an affair if it’s in secret. But, of course, it’s not.

The film is set in 19th-century Russia and the production is lavish, as are the sets and costumes. This version of Anna Karenina succeeds, however, 40 November 29, 2012

because it has a delightfully dreamlike quality: the film is set both in Russian high society, and on a stage, a sort of Shakespearean “all the world’s a stage” setting. There’s no audience in the theater of Anna Karenina because that’s the role we, the cinematic audience, serve.

This narrative device gives rise to some extraordinary transitions, including one where a train traveling across the frozen steppes dissolves into a toy train going through a model of the icy terrain, and back to the train station where lovers Anna and Vronsky meet.

Later, Anna visits her son, from whom she’s been exiled, and the camera pulls back and we see that, somehow, the boy’s bedroom is on stage and the foreground is framed by the limelights that illuminate the activity.

The performances are generally good, though Knightley again demonstrates her one-note acting ability. Law delivers a notable performance as the confused husband Karenin, and Gleeson embodies the humble Levin so well that I felt quite moved by his earnest courting of Kitty, even as he knows he’s no match for the dashing, sophisticated Vronsky.

I quite enjoyed writer Tom Stoppard’s reimagining of Anna Karenina as a dream-like parable of love, relationships and the challenge between following your heart versus doing what’s right or what’s expected of you, and director Joe Wright brings it to screen beautifully. Having said that, it’s still a costume drama with a rather Masterpiece Theater feel. If that’s appealing, this is well worth your time and is lavish on screen.

Nanoparticles of vanadium(IV) oxide

O

n the surface, nanoparticles seem to offer many potential benefits: By adding them to foods and food packaging, they can help deliver nutrients, act as thickening agents, enhance taste or flavor or ensure longer freshness of food. But these tiny microscopic versions of silver, zinc, titanium dioxide and other metals and nutrients, largely because of their microscopic size, may cause adverse health impacts.

The problem is that scientists are still determining the health and environmental impacts of these tiny particles, even as industry is forging ahead. Each of these nanoparticles has a distinct way of reacting with the human body, and there is little research to assure us that ingesting these microscopic materials is safe. Even more alarming, there is no information readily available to consumers alerting them as to which products contain nanoparticles, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not keep records on the matter.

E Magazine asked a spokesperson at the FDA: “Where are the nanomaterials most often found within food products?”

He answered: “FDA does not maintain a list of food products that contain nanomaterials, so we cannot reliably answer this question.”

Research has found that soybeans grown with this fertilizer take up the nanoparticles in their leaves, stems and beans.

And nanoparticles in food wrappings, used to protect the food from contamination, could be contaminating our bodies instead.

“We know that there’s nanosilver in food wrapping and food packaging,” says Jennifer Sass, a senior scientist with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). “That nanosilver releases ions, so those ions could be getting into the food. The ions are toxic; they are the antimicrobial part of the silver.”

Indian Peaks Golf Course in Lafayette is bringing back its Celebrity Chef Menu Series this winter.

Each Tuesday and Friday evening through Dec. 21, attendees can enjoy meals crafted by some well-known names in both the culinary and entertainment world.

The Boulder County Area Agency on Aging invites members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community who are 60 and up as well as their friends and family to the Lavender Gala, an event designed to recognize and create a sense of inclusiveness among Boulder’s older LGBT community members.

The event will be held at Nissi’s Bistro in Lafayette from 1-4 p.m., and attendees are encouraged to dress festively. There is a suggested donation at the door of $10, which includes hors d’oeuvres.

to label their products as containing nanomaterials, and only do so voluntarily, it is primarily the companies that make supplements, who wish to tout their copper, silver or iron nanoparticles, that give consumers a clue as to what’s inside.

What’s the Worry?

Nanoparticles, whether in consumer goods or in the food supply, are being treated as though they are equivalent to their larger counterparts. In other words, the government considers silver and nanosilver to be essentially the same. But their tiny size means they function quite differently within the body, the full ramifications of which are still coming to light. In 2011, researchers discovered that silver nanoparticles, when inhaled, cause lung toxicity or inflammation in exposed mice.

Similarly, inhaled copper nanoparticles increased the risk of pulmonary infections in mice. Carbon nanotubes, used in super-strong plastics and for computer chips, have presented a particular worry, when research found in 2008 that the particles can damage lungs in a similar fashion as asbestos, which the particles resemble in shape and size.

Ingesting nanoparticles may cause

more subtle health problems than inhalation. The particles, due to their small size, can pass into the bloodstream and then accumulate in organs. Once there, writes the American Society of Safety Engineers, they can “disrupt and impair biological, structural and metabolic processes and weaken the immune system.”

And recent research discovered that when chickens consumed large quantities of polystyrene nanoparticles, approved for human consumption, they blocked the animals’ ability to absorb iron.

Cornell researcher Gretchen Mahler, one of the authors of the study, says: “The nanomaterials that are being developed all have very different reactivity with human tissues. This means that you can’t apply results with one type of nanoparticle to all other nanoparticles — you have to test them all individually.”
