While we will be accepting wrapping paper for a limited time, its high-clay and low-paper content makes it difficult to recycle. Instead, get creative and choose reused/reusable alternatives like comics, posters, maps, blueprints, or calendars (all recyclable), fabric, reusable paper or cloth gift bags, bandannas, etc. For shipping, replace foam or bubble wrap with balled up newspaper or magazine pages.

3 Make Gatherings Zero Waste Instead of disposable tableware, serve food on real, reusable dishware. Borrow dish sets and utensils from friends, or go thrift store shopping for a special holiday set. Decorate the table with gourds and squash, bowls full of apples, or other seasonal fruits and veggies. Prevent food waste: Ask friends to bring containers for leftovers.

The county’s sense of independence is reflected in our vibrant businesses: restaurateurs, retailers, nonprofits, crafters, garden centers and cultural experiences are just a few of the options you have when looking to keep your dollars invested in your local community during your holiday shopping. When you shop at independently owned local businesses, your entire community benefits from your purchase. If you spend $100 at a local business, about $68 of that amount remains in the community circulating among fellow Boulder residents. If you shop at a national chain, only about $43 of your purchase stays in Boulder. And it doesn’t take much to make a big difference: even shifting just 10 percent of your purchases toward local retailers could translate to more than 1,000 new jobs and tens of millions in wages, all of that going to folks in your community. Shopping locally is a kind of economic stimulus — the more of your money you spend locally, the more tax money is reinvested in your community, benefiting your streets, shops and neighborhoods. Shopping locally is also the green thing to do, as less money and fewer resources are used on packaging and transportation, lowering your carbon footprint as a consumer.
