hen you think of America’s great Constitutional originators, names like Jefferson, Washington and Franklin come to mind. And, of course, Abbott.

Last January, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott revealed that he has penned NINE new amendments to the U.S. Constitution. Abbott is proposing a Bill of Sale, effectively transferring our national government from The People to The Plutocrats. His “tweaks” would outlaw government actions that restrain

corporate abuse of workers and consumers, while also preventing future Congresses from meeting crucial public needs such as health care, voter rights and restoration of our national infrastructure.

However, Abbott is not the force behind this tampering with our Constitution. The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) — at the direction of the Koch brothers and their corporate cohorts — wrote Abbott’s Bill of Sale. Back in 2010, ALEC’s board of directors approved a resolution calling for a Constitutional Convention to enact the corporate humbuggery Abbott is now pushing.

Convening a convention, permitted under Article V of the Constitution, is a dream of those seeking an American Kochistan, and ALEC is spearheading a hodgepodge of right-wing groups that are close to succeeding. At the convention, they would attempt to

rewrite our nation’s fundamental governing document. The changes would enthrone the “moneyed corporations” that Jefferson and other founders abhorred as destroyers of America’s democratic possibilities.

It takes 34 states to convene a Constitutional convention, 28 states have already passed resolutions to do exactly that. The ALEC/Koch consortium is now targeting 11 others.

Absurd? Of course. Even the formerhead of the right-wing Eagle Forum, Phyllis Schlafly, said before her death this push is “a prescription for political chaos.” To keep up with ALEC go to www.ALECExposed.org.

any Americans wanted big change this year. A majority of voters in a nationwide Election Day exit poll by Reuters/Ipsos agreed that “America needs a strong leader to take the country back from the rich and powerful.”

They agreed that “it is increasingly hard for someone like me to get ahead” and “the American economy is rigged to advantage the rich and powerful.”

Donald Trump portrayed himself as the “blue-collar billionaire.” He promised to create 25 million new jobs in the next decade. He said he wouldn’t cut Social Security and Medicare like other Republicans.

By contrast, he said “Crooked Hillary” was a puppet of the “globalist elite.” He reminded us that she and Bill received $153 million in speaking fees from big banks and corporations.

Many in the corporate media claimed the election was a revolt by the “white working class.” Actually the story is more complicated. Sixty-two percent of white Trump voters had a higher median family income than Clinton voters. They were also richer than those who voted for Sanders in the primaries.

A lot of white working class people in the Rust Belt who had voted for Obama in 2008 and 2012 decided to support Trump. He reminded them that NAFTA was passed during Bill Clinton’s administration and that Hillary had promoted the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) as Secretary of State. She came out against TPP during the primaries after being pushed by Bernie and a massive coalition of civil society groups (particularly labor and environmental).

There is another factor. President Obama insisted on pushing the TPP. He wanted a vote on it in the lame-duck session of Congress. This is after the election and before the start of a new administration. This is the best time to push something that is unpopular with the public.

Two leaders of the anti-TPP movement, Lori Wallach (director of Global Trade Watch) and Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-Connecticut) feel that Obama’s push for the TPP helped elect Trump. “In those states, where we lost by a point or two, it was all about trade,” DeLauro told Politico.

porations. But, as Willliam Greider of The Nation noted, he dog-whistled reassuring coded language to that same establishment. He gave a number of little-publicized, Paul Ryan-like speeches on the economy advocating big tax cuts to the rich and deregulation of business. There are indications he really supports privatization of Social Security and Medicare.

Clinton had many popular progressive proposals. They were on her website and she mentioned some in her speeches. But her TV commercials were completely negative, pointing out Trump’s character flaws.

Democratic pollster Celinda Lake was mad that the Clinton campaign didn’t present an economic vision to contrast Trump.

After Trump’s victory, the big winners in the stock market were pharmaceuticals, defense contractors, petroleum refineries and for-profit prisons.

On the day after the election, Hillary Clinton gave her concession speech. It was broadcast on television screens at the New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street. CNN Money reported that “loud booing rocked the floor” and traders chanted “lock her up!” as Clinton spoke.

“Ding-dong, the witch is dead,” a trader reportedly yelled.

Some polls showed that a majority thought Trump was more trustworthy than Clinton. However, fact checkers judged that her truthfulness was about average for a politician while Trump was a shameless and promiscuous liar. He’s a bullshit artist who benefitted from the rightwing alternative reality created by Fox News, Breitbart News and radio hosts like Rush Limbaugh.

Arun Gupta, a journalist who covered the Trump campaign, argues that “the governing strategy (of the Trump presidency) won’t be like the disinformation of the Bush era. It will be more disorientation, confusion, demoralization, conspiratorial.” If a recession happens, he will pivot to scapegoating those (fill-in-theblank). Right now, there is an explosion of violence, intimidation and hate crimes directed at blacks, Latinos, Muslims, Jews, gays. Much of the time, the thugs identify themselves as Trump fans.

All of Trump’s promises (good and bad) are suspect. He’s a slippery demagogue. But it would be foolish not to expect repression. Our democracy will be put to the test.

You’re just like me

I’m glad to hear that your response to the election of Trump is grounded in unity. However, I think that you fall short in your analysis of the massive Democratic Party failure this election cycle.

While it is clear that the Democratic party establishment and the Clinton campaign in particular failed to address the grievances of poor whites (costing Dems not only the White House but also both houses of Congress), we as rank-and-file progressives would be kidding ourselves if we pushed the blame entirely onto party elites.

The reality is that the both you and I ­— and the Left in general — failed to actively engage with the ideas of Trump voters this election cycle.

In the Boulder bubble, where we dared not fathom that Trump supporters were (and are) in our midst, we forgot the need to engage with the ideas of the Right here at home.

Boulder County voted about 70 percent for Clinton and 20 percent for Trump. So where were the Trump supporters during the campaigns?

As a student on CU’s Boulder campus, I saw the Trump hats come out the morning after the election. These were people I know, and that, in my ignorance, I never believed would support a candidate I firmly believed — like you — to be poisoned with racism, misogyny and general right-wing lunacy. see LETTERS Page 7

Moreover, because I didn’t know any open Trump supporters (I’m from Portland, Oregon — another liberal bubble) — I had this image of them as extraordinarily evil, or at least incredibly ignorant. But that day, I got to talking with an acquaintance who actually voted for the Orange Guy. Spoiler: We didn’t agree on anything. But I didn’t call him racist, misogynistic or uninformed. I patiently explained where I came from and he did so as well. There was no yelling, ad hominem slurs or violence. We simply talked. And, in sharpening my own arguments, I learned a valuable lesson about how to deal with the new majority in this country.

The answer is civil discourse.

Instead of blaming Democratic elites for this failure, we need to blame ourselves for not seriously engaging with the ideas of Trump supporters — as reprehensible as they may be to us. It is the only way to wage our long battle that is the foundation of progressive politics.

Why skip the turkey?

President Obama is taking a break from the Trump transition to pardon two turkeys. Every one of us can exercise that presidential pardon power on Thanksgiving by giving thanks for health and happiness while skipping gratuitous violence.

The 235 million turkeys killed in the U.S. this year have nothing to be thankful for. They are raised in crowded sheds filled with toxic fumes. At 16 weeks, slaughterhouse workers cut their throats and dump them in boiling water to remove their feathers.

Consumers pay a heavy price too.

Turkey flesh is laced with cholesterol and saturated fats that elevate risk of chronic killer diseases. Package labels warn of food poisoning potential.

But, there is good news. Annual per capita consumption of turkeys is down by a whopping 35 percent from a 1996 high. A third of our population is reducing meat consumption. Food manufacturers are developing a great variety of healthful, delicious plantBoulder Weekly

My Thanksgiving dinner will include a “tofurky” (soy-based roast), mashed potatoes, stuffed squash, chestnut soup, candied yams, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie and carrot cake. President-elect Trump: a criminal?

I just wrote to our Colorado Senators to urge initiation of an immediate investigation into the criminal activities of the president-elect Donald J. Trump and I encourage you to take similar action. If you support Trump, you should be as interested as I am in getting to the bottom of the huge list of criminal allegations that congeal around this reality TV star. We all deserve to know what is true and what is not.

During the campaign, several extremely troubling facts were brought to light and either ignored or dismissed by the accused. Now that he is the President Elect, I demand that there be a full accounting and investigation of the ongoing pattern of criminal and unethical acts.

For example, a very limited list: Our next president is alleged to have broken contracts by refusing to pay for services rendered. That he has bankrupted hard-working business owners through ongoing, baseless litigation. That he has assaulted women.

Since the election, Vladimir Putin has stated that he maintained contact with the Trump campaign throughout the election. During this election, there has been evidence of cyber-hacking that, it could be argued, benefited the president-elect. I demand an investigation into the specifics of Russia’s involvement in the U.S. presidential election.

Let’s all just imagine, for a moment, that the previous list were not tied to Trump, but to Obama.

In that imaginary world, would the weekend media cycle have ignored these various allegations? Why did we allow a great man, President Obama, to be relentlessly hounded by specious accusations? Is it because he’s black? I fear so.

America is in crisis, and our hope lies in the power of our combined and amplified love and rage toward those who undermine the ideals of our great nation. United, we are powerful. Take heart, and with laughter and tears let’s get busy on the fight of our lives.

Fighting climate change in the time of Trump

A call to action for individuals, communities and U.S. politicians

In 2015, dozens of alternative weeklies and other newsmedia outlets, including Boulder Weekly, participated in Letters to the Future, a project published ahead of the U.N. Paris climate talks that compiled letters from nationally acclaimed writers, scientists, intellectuals and other concerned citizens. As part of the project, the letters were dispatched to hundreds of targeted delegates and citizens before they convened at the Paris sessions.

Now, in the wake of the U.S. election, we pick up where Letters to the Future left off, with a piece that examines what Donald Trump’s administration could mean for climate change — and a call-toaction list for what must come next.

f President-elect Donald Trump actually believes all the warnings he issued during the election about the threats of immigration, he should be talking about ways to slow global warming as well. Rising sea levels, caused by the melting of the Antarctic and Greenland ice caps, will probably displace tens of millions of people in the decades ahead, and many may come to North America as refugees.

Climate change will cause a suite of other problems for future generations to tackle, and it’s arguably the most pressing issue of our time.

Scientists at every corner of the globe confirm that humans are facing a crisis. A year ago December, world leaders gathered in Paris for the United Nations Climate Conference to discuss strategies for curbing greenhouse gas emissions. However, climate change is being nearly ignored by American politicians and lawmakers. It was not discussed in depth at all during this past election cycle’s televised presidential debates. And, when climate change does break the surface of public discussion, it polarizes Americans like almost no other political issue. Some conservatives, including Trump, still deny there’s even a problem.

“We are in this bizarre political state in which most of the Republican Party still thinks it has to pretend that climate change is not real,” says Jonathan F.P. Rose, a New York City developer and author of The WellTempered City, which explores, in part, how low-cost green development can

mitigate the impacts of rising global temperatures and changing weather patterns.

Rose says progress cannot be made in drafting effective climate strategies until national leaders agree there’s an issue.

“We have such strong scientific evidence,” he says. “We can disagree on how we’re going to solve the problems, but I would hope we could move toward an agreement on the basic facts.”

That such a serious planetwide crisis has become a divide across the American political battlefield “is a tragedy” to Peter Kalmus, an earth scientist with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory ( JPL) at Caltech in Pasadena, who agreed to be interviewed for this story on his own behalf (not on behalf of NASA, JPL or Caltech).

Kalmus warns that climate change is happening whether politicians want to talk about it or not.

“CO2 molecules and infrared photons don’t give a crap about politics, whether you’re liberal or conservative,

Republican or Democrat or anything else,” Kalmus says.

Slowing climate change will be essential, since adapting to all its impacts may be impossible.

Governments must strive for greater resource efficiency, shift to renewable energy and transition from conventional to more sustainable agricultural practices.

America’s leaders must also implement a carbon pricing system, climate activists say, that places a financial burden on fossil fuel producers and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. But there may be little to zero hope that such a system will be installed at the federal level as Trump prepares to move into the White House. Trump has actually threatened to reverse any commitments the United States agreed to in Paris. According to widely circulating reports, Trump has even selected a well-known skeptic of climate change, Myron Ebell, to head his U.S. Environmental Protection Agency transition team. Ebell is the director of the Center for Energy and Environment at the Competitive Boulder Weekly

Steve Valk, communications director for the Citizens’ Climate Lobby, says the results of the presidential election come as a discouraging setback in the campaign to slow emissions and global warming.

“There’s no doubt that the steep hill we’ve been climbing just became a sheer cliff,” he says. “But cliffs are scalable.”

Valk says the American public must demand that Congress implement carbon pricing. He says the government is not likely to face and attack climate change unless voters force them to.

“The solution is going to have to come from the people,” he says. “Our politicians have shown that they’re just not ready to implement a solution on their own.”

After Paris There is no question the Earth is warming rapidly, and already this upward temperature trend is having impacts. It is disrupting agriculture.

Glacial water sources are vanishing.

Storms and droughts are becoming more severe. Altered winds and ocean currents are impacting marine ecosystems. So is ocean acidification, another outcome of carbon dioxide emissions.

The sea is rising and eventually will swamp large coastal regions and islands. As many as 200 million people could be displaced by 2050. For several years in a row now, global temperatures have been warmer than any year prior in recorded history, and by 2100 it may be too hot for people to permanently live in the Persian Gulf.

World leaders and climate activists made groundbreaking progress toward slowing these effects at the Paris climate conference. Here, leaders from 195 countries drafted a plan of action to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions and steer the planet off its predicted course of warming. The pact, which addresses energy, transportation, industries and agriculture — and which asks leaders to regularly upgrade their climate policies — is intended to keep the planet from warming by 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit between pre-industrial years and the end of this century.

Scientists have forecasted that an average global increase of 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit will have devastating consequences for humanity.

The United States pledged to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 26 percent from 2005 levels within a decade.

China, Japan and nations of the European Union made similar promises. More recently, almost 200 nations Boulder Weekly

agreed to phase out hydrofluorocarbons, extremely potent but short-lived greenhouse gases emitted by refrigerators and air conditioners, and reduce the emissions from the shipping and aviation industries.

But in the wake of such promising international progress, and as 2016 draws to a close as the third warmest year in a row, many climate activists are disconcerted both by United States leaders’ recent silence on the issue and by the outcome of the presidential election. Mark Sabbatini, editor of the newspaper Icepeople in Svalbard, Norway, believes shortsighted political scheming has pushed climate change action to the back burner. He wants to see politicians start listening to scientists.

“But industry folks donate money and scientists get shoved aside in the interest of profits and re-election,” says Sabbatini, who recently had to evacuate his apartment as unprecedented temperatures thawed out the entire region’s permafrost, threatening to collapse buildings.

Short-term goals and immediate financial concerns distract leaders from making meaningful policy advances on climate.

“In Congress, they look two years ahead,” Sabbatini says. “In the Senate, they look six years ahead. In the White House, they look four years ahead.”

The 300 nationwide chapters of the Citizens’ Climate Lobby are calling on local governments and chambers of commerce across America to voice support for a revenue-neutral carbon fee. The hope is that leaders in Congress will hear the demands of the people. This carbon fee would impose a charge on producers of oil, natural gas and coal. As a direct result, all products and services that depend on or directly utilize those fossil fuels would cost more for consumers, who would be incentivized to buy less.

Food shipped in from far away would cost more than locally grown alternatives. Gas for heating, electricity generated by oil and coal, and driving a car would become more expensive.

“Bicycling would become more attractive, and so would electric cars and home appliances that use less energy,” says Kalmus, an advocate of the revenue-neutral carbon fee.

Promoting this fee system is essentially the Citizens’ Climate Lobby’s entire focus.

“This would be the most important step we take toward addressing climate change,” Valk says.

By the carbon fee system, the revenue from fossil fuel producers would

be evenly distributed by the collecting agencies among the public, perhaps via a tax credit. Recycling the dividends back into society would make it a fair system, Valk explains, since poorer people, who tend to use less energy than wealthier people to begin with and are therefore less to blame for climate change, would come out ahead.

The system would also place a tariff on incoming goods from nations without a carbon fee. This would keep American industries from moving overseas and maybe even prompt other nations to set their own price on carbon.

But there’s a problem with the revenue-neutral carbon fee, according to other climate activists: It doesn’t support social programs that may be aimed at reducing society’s carbon footprint.

“It will put no money into programs that serve disadvantaged communities who, for example, might not be able to afford weatherizing their home and lowering their energy bill, or afford an electric vehicle or a solar panel,” says Renata Brillinger, executive director of the California Climate and Agriculture Network. “It doesn’t give anything to public schools for making the buildings more energy efficient, and it wouldn’t give any money to farmers’ incentive programs for soil building.”

Brillinger’s organization is advocating for farmers to adopt practices that actively draw carbon out of the atmosphere, like planting trees and maintaining ground cover to prevent erosion. Funding, she says, is needed to support such farmers, who may go through transitional periods of reduced yields and increased costs. California’s cap-and-trade system sets up an ample revenue stream for this purpose that a revenue-neutral system does not, according to Brillinger.

But Valk says establishing a carbon pricing system must take into account the notorious reluctance of conservatives in Congress.

“You aren’t going to get a single Republican in Congress to support legislation unless it’s revenue-neutral,” he says. “Any policy is useless if you can’t pass it in Congress.”

Sequestering the farm In Washington, D.C., the nation’s leaders continue tussling over popular issues like immigration, taxes, healthcare, abortion, guns and foreign affairs.

But climate change activists wish they would be thinking more about soil. That’s because stopping greenhouse gas emissions alone will not stop

climate change. The carbon dioxide emitted through centuries of industrial activity will continue to drive warming unless it is removed from the air and put somewhere.

“There are only three places carbon can go,” Brillinger says. “It can go into the atmosphere, where we don’t want it, into the ocean, where we also don’t want it because it causes acidification, or into soil and woody plants where we do want it. Carbon is the backbone of all forests and is a critical nutrient of soil.”

But most of the Earth’s soil carbon has been lost to the atmosphere, causing a spike in atmospheric carbon. In the 1700s, the Earth’s atmosphere contained less than 280 parts per million of carbon dioxide, according to scientists. Now, we are at more than 400 and counting. Climate experts generally agree that the atmospheric carbon level must be reduced to 350 or less if we are to keep at bay the most disastrous possible impacts of warming.

This is why farmers and the soil they work will be so important in mitigating climate change. By employing certain practices and abandoning other ones, farmers and ranchers can turn acreage into valuable carbon sinks — a general agricultural approach often referred to as “carbon farming.”

Conventional agriculture practices tend to emit carbon dioxide. Regular tilling of the soil, for example, causes soil carbon to bond with oxygen and float away as carbon dioxide. Tilling also causes erosion, as do deforestation and overgrazing. With erosion, soil carbon enters waterways, creating carbonic acid — the direct culprit of ocean acidification. Researchers have estimated that unsustainable farming practices have caused as much as 80 percent of the world’s soil carbon to turn into carbon dioxide.

By carbon farming, those who produce the world’s food can simultaneously turn their land into precious carbon sinks. The basic tenets of carbon farming include growing trees as windbreaks and focusing on perennial crops, like fruit trees and certain specialty grain varieties, which demand less tilling and disturbance of the soil.

Eric Toensmeier, a senior fellow with the climate advocacy group Project Drawdown and the author of The Carbon Farming Solution, says many other countries are far ahead of the United States in both recognizing the importance of soil as a place to store carbon and funding programs that help conventional farmers shift See CLIMATE CHANGE Page 10

toward carbon farming practices.

France, for instance, initiated a sophisticated program in 2011 that calls for increasing soil carbon worldwide by 0.4 percent every year. Healthy soil can contain 10 percent carbon or more, and France’s program has the potential over time to decelerate the increase in atmospheric carbon levels.

Toensmeier is optimistic about the progress being made in the United States, too. The U.S. Department of Agriculture funds programs that support environmentally friendly farming practices that protect watersheds or enhance wildlife habitat, largely through planting perennial grasses and trees.

“And it turns out a lot of the practices they’re paying farmers to do to protect water quality or slow erosion also happen to sequester carbon,” Toensmeier says.

He says it appears obvious that the federal government is establishing a system by which they will eventually pay farmers directly to sequester carbon. Such a direct faceoff with climate change, however, may be a few years away still.

Climate activists may even need to wait until 2021.

“First we need a president who acknowledges that climate change exists,” Toensmeier says.

National politics and city reform Climate reform advocates still talk about Bernie Sanders’ fiery attack on fracking as a source of global warming in the May primary debate with Hillary Clinton.

“If we don’t get our act together, this planet could be 5 to 10 degrees warmer by the end of this century,” Sanders said then.

“Cataclysmic problems for this planet. This is a national crisis.”

Sanders was not exaggerating.

The Earth has already warmed by 1.7 degrees Fahrenheit since 1880, and it’s getting hotter. Even with the advances made in Paris, the world remains on track to be 6.1 degrees Fahrenheit warmer by 2100 than it was in pre-industrial times, according to a United Nations emissions report released in early November. The authors of another paper published in January in the journal Nature predicted temperatures will rise as much as 10 degrees Fahrenheit.

In light of the scientific con-

sensus, conservatives’ denial of climate change looks childish at best and dangerous at worst. In lowlying Florida, so vulnerable to the rising sea, an unofficial policy from its Republican leadership has effectively muzzled state employees from even mentioning “climate change” and “global warming” in official reports and communications. Republican senator Ted Cruz suggested NASA focus its research less on climate change and more on space exploration, according to The Christian Science Monitor.

Most frightening of all, maybe, is the incoming American president’s stance on the matter: Trump said in a 2012 tweet that global warming is a Chinese hoax. In January 2014, during a brief spell of cold weather, he asked via Twitter, “Is our country still spending money on the GLOBAL WARMING HOAX?” While most of the rest of the world remains poised to advance emissions reductions goals, Trump is aiming in a different direction.

The Trump-Pence website vows to “unleash America’s $50 trillion in untapped shale, oil, and natural gas reserves, plus hundreds of years in clean coal reserves.” His webpage concerning energy goals only mentions reducing emissions once, and it makes no mention of climate change or renewable energy.

While meaningful action at the federal level is probably years away, at the local level, progress is coming —even in communities led by Republicans, according to Rose.

That, he says, is because local politicians face a level of accountability from which national leaders are often shielded.

“At the city level, mayors have to deliver real results,” Rose says.

“They have to protect their residents and make wise investments on behalf of their residents. The residents see what they’re doing and hold them accountable.”

Restructuring and modifying our cities, which are responsible for about half of America’s carbon footprint, “will be critical toward dealing with climate change,” Rose says.

“On the coast we’ll have sea level rise. Inland, we’ll have flooding and heat waves. Heat waves cause more deaths than hurricanes.”

Simply integrating nature into city infrastructure is a very lowcost but effective means for countering the changes that are coming, Rose says. Many cities, for example, are planting thousands of street trees. Trees draw in atmospheric carbon as they grow and, through shade and evaporative cooling effects, can significantly reduce surface temperatures by as much as 6 degrees Fahrenheit in some circumstances, Rose says.

Laws and policies that take aim at reduced emissions targets can be very efficient tools for generating change across entire communities. However, Kalmus believes it’s important that individuals, too, reduce their own emissions through voluntary behavior changes, rather than simply waiting for change to come from leaders and lawmakers.

“If you care about climate change, it will make you happier,” he says. “It makes you feel like you’re pioneering a new way to live. For others, you’re the person who is showing the path and making them realize it’s not as crazy as it seems.”

Kalmus, who lives in Altadena, California, with his wife and two sons, has radically overhauled his lifestyle to reduce his carbon footprint. Since 2010 he has cut his own emissions by a factor of 10 — from 20 tons per year to just 2, by his own estimates. This personal transformation is the subject of his forthcoming book, Being the Change: Live Well and Spark a Climate Revolution, due out in 2017.

Kalmus rides a bike most places, eats mostly locally grown food, raises some of it in his own yard, has stopped eating meat and — one of the most important changes — has all but quit flying places.

He hopes to serve as a model and help spark a transition to an economy that does not depend on constant growth, as ours currently does. One day, he believes, it will be socially unacceptable to burn fossil fuel, just as it’s become shunned to waste water in drought-dried California. The oil industry will eventually become obsolete.

“We need to transition to an economy that doesn’t depend on unending growth,” Kalmus says.

Six things leaders must prioritize to address climate change

Impose a price on carbon

This could occur in several ways. The revenue-neutral carbon fee has a great backbone of advocacy support. It would charge fossil fuel producers at the first point of sale, and the revenue would be distributed among the public. Prices of goods and services dependent on fossil fuels would go up, while people who buy less of those products and therefore contribute less to climate change would come out ahead. The revenue-neutral system’s one flaw, by some opinions, is that it doesn’t provide government with a new source of revenue for funding social systems that promote renewable energy, sustainable agriculture and other climate-focused measures. A cap-and-trade system, on the other hand, would fund public agencies while creating incentive for industries to pollute less.

Republicans, however, tend to oppose cap and trade because it acts much like a tax on businesses that they argue will depress the economy.

Carbon farming

Agriculture has been one of the greatest overall emitters of atmospheric carbon. Now, agriculture must play a role in reversing the damage done to the planet — and it’s theoretically a simple task: When plants grow, they draw carbon into their own mass and into the soil. All that a farmer needs to do is keep that carbon there. By planting longstanding trees and perennial row crops, farmers and other land managers have the power to sequester a great deal of the carbon dioxide that has been emitted into the atmosphere. In the process of slowing climate change, soils will become richer and healthier, with more natural productivity and greater water retention properties than depleted soils.

Redesign our cities

Urban areas are responsible for more than half of America’s carbon footprint, by some estimates. The role of cities in driving climate change can be largely offset by turn-

ing linear material and waste streams — like water inputs — into circular loops that recycle precious resources. Jonathan F. P. Rose, author of The Well-Tempered City, says 98 percent of material resources that enter a city leave again, mostly as waste, within six months. Improving the energy efficiency of buildings would be one very significant way to reduce a city’s carbon footprint. Upgrading transit systems and making streets more compatible with zero-emission transportation, like walking and riding a bicycle, would also cut emissions.

Shift to renewable energy

This is a big one that has to be tackled, and it will mean fighting the powerful petroleum lobby. Generating electricity currently produces 30 percent of our greenhouse gas emissions, the single largest source by sector in the country, according to the EPA. However, Donald Trump has promised to revive the American coal industry and tap into domestic reserves of natural gas and oil — quite the opposite of developing renewable energy technology.

Strive for low- to zeroemission transportation

Driving your car — one of the most symbolic expressions of American freedom — contributes significantly to climate change. Transport accounts for 26 percent of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, says the EPA. More than half of this total comes from private vehicles. Airplanes, ships and trains produce most of the rest. Against the will of the petroleum industry, national leaders must continue pressing for more efficient vehicles, as well as electric ones powered by clean electricity.

Make homes more efficient A single pilot light produces about a half ton of carbon dioxide per year, according to Peter Kalmus, author of the forthcoming book Being the Change: Live Well and Spark a Climate Revolution. That is just one example of how households contribute to climate change. According to the EPA, commercial and residential spaces produce 12 percent of the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions. In his book, Kalmus discusses how and why he took simple but meaningful action that reduced his carbon dioxide emissions from about 20 tons per year to just 2.

Unless we slow our carbon emissions and our population growth now, depletion of resources, he warns, will catch up with us.

“We need to shift to a steady-state economy and a steady-state population,” he says. “Fossil-fueled civilization cannot continue forever.”

Though Americans will soon have as president a man who is essentially advocating for climate change, Valk, at the Citizens’ Climate Lobby, expects time — and warming — to shift voter perspectives.

Grassroots activist talks conflict in the U.S./Saudi alliance

n a Friday afternoon in mid-July — one day after a terrorist attack using a cargo truck killed 86 people in Nice, France, mere hours after Donald Trump named Mike Pence as his running mate, and only one day before Congress broke for summer recess — White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest fielded questions from reporters during a press briefing.

Most of the questions focused on the attack in Nice — Earnest snarkily shrugged aside an inquiry about the White House’s thoughts on Mike Pence — but one reporter jumped at the chance to shift the conversation after Earnest mentioned 9/11, bringing up the missing pages of the Congressional report on the attacks. These 28 pages were declassified that day, July 15, 2016.

“Without actually having seen the 28 pages yet ourselves,” the journalist began, “can you just summarize, does the administration think these 28 pages shed any important new light on the Saudi role in the attacks on 9/11?”

The short answer from Earnest was no. Despite the fact that 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudi, the 9/11 Commission found, in their words, “no evidence that the Saudi government as an institution, or senior Saudi officials individually funded al Qaeda.”

Then why did it take so long — 14 years — to release these pages, the journalist asked, “and is it, as some people think, deference to the Saudi royal family?”

Earnest agreed that “it did take quite some time for the decisions to be made to declassify this material,” but said he was “not in a position to discuss what may have factored into those decisions.”

“I’m going to restate the question in the simplest form,” the reporter pressed. “Was it out of deference to Saudi sensibility?”

“I can’t speak to what factors may have factored into the length of time that it took to complete the review,” Earnest responded.

This press conference seemed symbolic for many journalists and activists familiar with the complex relationship the U.S. government maintains with Saudi Arabia.

One such activist is Medea Benjamin, a cofounder of CODEPINK, a women-led grassroots organization working to end U.S. war and militarism. Benjamin has invested years in studying the relationship between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia. She’s currently traveling around the country in support of her new book, Kingdom of the Unjust: Behind the U.S.-Saudi Connection.

“The lobbyists that the Saudi government hires were clever enough to [push Congress to] release that information on a Friday evening when Congress was going into its summer recess and when the two national political conventions were about to begin,” she says.

“It’s since been buried by this crazy election cycle.”

According to reporting from The Washington Post, some of Washington’s leading law and lobby firms — including the Podesta Group — have received money directly from the Saudi government to raise the country’s visibility (and perhaps credibility) in the United States. In 2015 alone, the Saudi government hired five PR firms to lobby its cause.

The United States has maintained close ties with the Middle Eastern nation for more than 80 years, despite Saudi Arabia’s history of human rights violations. Human Rights Watch has cited the Saudi government for violations against freedom of expression, association and belief; criminal justice; women’s and girl’s rights; and migrant workers’ rights. The nonprofit, nongovernmental organization has also called out President Barack Obama for not discussing human rights issues with Saudi officials during scheduled visits.

Even Barack Obama himself, while speaking to Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, has called the alliance between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia “complicated.”

The relationship started, of course, with the discovery of oil in the newly formed Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the late 1930s and early ’40s.

“So there was this relationship of ‘oil for security,’ where the U.S. secured the continued rule of the Saudi regime as long as the Saudis allowed the U.S. oil companies to extract their oil and sell it to the U.S. at a cheap price, and that relationship has continued to this day,” Benjamin explains.

But Benjamin believes the larger issue today is weapons sales.

“If you just look at the eight years of the Obama Administration, you see this massive amount of weapon sales, $115 billion that makes the Saudis the No. 1 weapons purchaser from the United States,” she says.

For nearly two years, a Saudi-led coalition of Gulf States has been bombing Yemen, by far the poorest country of the Arab states. The coalition is supposedly targeting Houthi rebels who overthrew Yemen’s president in March 2015, but research conducted by The Guardian revealed that one-third of all Saudi-led air raids on Yemen hit civilian sites — schools, hospitals and mosques — made possible with bombs, intelligence and other support from the United States.

In September, the U.S. Senate rejected a bid to block a $1.15 billion weapons sale to Saudi Arabia.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) told fellow senators he opposed the block on weapons to Saudi Arabia because it would “harm our nation’s long term strategic interests in the Persian Gulf and the broader Middle East.” Other GOP Senators echoed McConnell on the grounds that a fortified Saudi Arabia creates some protection

from Iran’s political aspirations.

But others, even those on the same side of the aisle as McConnell, said selling weapons to Saudi Arabia is essentially the U.S. joining the war in Yemen without congressional approval.

“We are complicit and actively involved with war in Yemen,” Senator Rand Paul said on the Senate floor in September. “We are currently doing in-flight refueling of bombers, Saudi Arabian bombers that are bombing in Yemen. We are helping to select sites and we actually have had Special Forces involved in these decisions in the theater as well.”

Benjamin says creating political solutions to Middle Eastern conflicts requires the U.S. to stop “covering up for Saudi Arabia, for the Saudi support of al Qaeda groups in Syria and Iraq and Libya; for U.S. support for the Saudi war in Yemen.

“All of these are examples of how our close partnership with the Saudis keeps us from really playing the role of peacemaker in the Middle East,” she says.

Benjamin admits it’s difficult to predict whether the U.S., under a Donald Trump Administration, will stop “covering up” for the Saudi government’s crimes against humanity — but history would suggest more of the same.

“We’ve already seen 12 different administrations, Democrats and Republicans, and they’ve all maintained this cozy relationship with Saudi Arabia, ” she says. “Between the grip that Big Oil and the weapons industry have on our government, it’s going to be very hard to change the relationship.”

Reports from The Washington Post reveal that President-elect Trump registered eight companies in Saudi Arabia during his presidential campaign.

Benjamin encourages people to call their congressional representatives and tell them to vote against the next weapons deal with Saudi Arabia. She also recommends getting involved with organizations that support efforts to keep Saudi political dissidents alive.

The Worldwide Movement for Human Rights reported that on Jan. 2, nearly 50 Saudi men, some of whom were minors at the time of their arrest, were executed following a trial which did not respect the right to defense, and at which allegations of torture were made.

Kratom backers give drug regulators a piece of their mind

n a recent Saturday evening, John Nielsen stands behind the long glass display showcase lined with fluorescent-lit, glass-blown pipes at the North Boulder head shop Rocketman, listening to Led Zeppelin.

A Jimmy Page solo hits a high-pitched, staccato climax and John springs from behind the counter as a woman enters the store and deposits a shaggy black lapdog named Oreo onto the carpet to play with Oggy and Noni, the white Shih Tzus that are fixtures of the store.

The woman has been using kratom, the leaves from a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia, to treat shoulder pain. She lifts her left elbow up head high, reporting to John that it works. Given its success, she’s convinced her mother to try it after an upcoming surgery in place of pharmaceutical painkillers.

“She likes the pain pills, the feeling. But I told her that (kratom) works really well,” she says.

Kratom is often sold in the form of a dry leaf powder in the U.S., where it is consumed in capsules, mixed into drinks or brewed into tea. Over the past decade, the botanical has gained a reputation as a natural alternative to prescription painkillers and a legal treatment for opiate withdrawal, despite claims from federal drug regulators who claim it poses a risk to public health.

used for centuries as a traditional medicine, but it remains relatively overlooked by Western science.

In September, kratom was thrust into the public spotlight when the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) said it would put a two-year ban on the plant as early as Oct. 1 by placing its active substances on the Schedule I list of narcotics, which includes heroin and GHB (sometimes called the “date rape drug”), among others.

The DEA also declined to take official feedback from the public, under emergency authority to ban kratom as “an imminent threat to public safety.”

With no official means of rebuttal, the ban appeared imminent, leading kratom supporters to make public video testimonials detailing the plant’s medical application in their life. Two weeks after the notice, 120,000 people had signed an online petition urging the president to stop the ban.

The outcry of support received widespread media coverage, and ultimately evoked two congressional groups, consisting of 51 U.S. Representatives and 10 members of the Senate. Facing a 30-day countdown from regulators, the American Kratom Association, a two-year-old interest group of consumers and vendors, had about $30,000 in its bank account.

“I thought for certain that I’d be able to raise a substantial amount of money in a very short amount of time, which I was able to do,” says the Denverbased group’s founder Susan Ash. The money was quickly used to hire lobbyists, political consultants and, particularly, lawyers. Ash, who had researched other emergency Schedule I fights, anticipated a legal battle. The group’s lawyers, which Ash said were former FDA attorneys, told her there was a 10 to 15 percent chance of achieving the unprecedented reversal from regulators.

Responding to federal group action, the Denver Department of Environmental Health seized all kratom-containing products from Denver-area retailers.

For one, Rocky Mountain Kratom, that meant closing the doors entirely and delaying the opening of its new south Broadway store.

A woman in the group sent Ash a message, saying there was a plant that could help. She asked Ash to call her, so she could explain it.

“I thought she was crazy,” Ash says. “There’s no way a plant is going to be able to help me.”

Each month, her pill prescription began running out earlier and earlier, and amidst withdrawals, she decided to call the woman.

“I had an order Fedexed to me, and I started kratom the next day,” she says. “It basically made my withdrawals — not go away — but it made them manageable.”

For several years, Ash relied on kratom to protect against withdrawal when she needed it.

During her last rehab stay, doctors told her she’d likely need to take Suboxone for the rest of her life to treat chronic pain.

“It (Suboxone) was acceptable to me at first, but I realized I was getting into patterns of abuse with it too, saving my doses up in the day to feel more powerful at night,” she says. “I began to wonder if kratom might actually help me get off of Suboxone, which it did. I used it to taper off Suboxone.”

Nearly three years ago, she began using kratom exclusively for chronic pain treatment.

“I’ve never gone back,” she says. “I’ve never had a craving for a narcotic, and I no longer consider myself a chronic pain patient while I’m taking kratom.”

In 2014, Ash founded the American Kratom Association, a pro-kratom interest group funded by donations from consumers and vendors.

The group has benefitted from a large surge in kratom usage, which the Association estimates is between 3 and 5 million people, based on the tonnage of kratom imports and number of customers of its largest vendors.

The demand for viable addiction treatment options in the U.S., where 90 percent of the world’s opiates are consumed, has never been higher. In 2014, overdose deaths from opioid drugs was higher than any other year on record, accounting for more than six of every 10 overdose deaths in the country, according to a Department of Health and Human Services report.

I

t’s a long way to North Dakota at 40 mph. We found that out last Thursday evening, Nov. 17, when a carload of journalists — including three of us representing Boulder Weekly — headed to the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) protest.

We slid north on a 638-mile-long sheet of black ice that stretched from just outside Longmont to the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in North Dakota.

We made this first of what we intend to be several trips to the DAPL protest to gain a better understanding of all the issues being raised by the protesters — who call themselves “water protectors” — and to see how the camps were preparing for the coming cold. We also wanted to find out firsthand how the election of Donald Trump as president is being perceived on the ground. Has it spurred the protesters on with a new sense of urgency or has it disheartened them?

Trump and winter seem to have the same effect on some people.

North Dakota winters tend to be merciless and this year’s installment arrived with that intent. Like Boulder County, North Dakota had been experiencing a very mild start to the season, but that all ended Thursday.

We pulled into camp in 25-degree temperatures with 30-mph steady winds accompanied by even stronger gusts. I don’t know what the windchill was but it felt incredibly cold. It cut right through all four layers I was wearing. It made setting up our tents at the main Oceti Sakowin Camp — the largest of the water protector encampments at approximately 135 acres — challenging as the gusts threatened to send our yet-to-be-staked-down shelters flying into the river below. Every time we pulled our gloves off, it took only a few seconds for the numbness to set in.

And then it hit us; these folks, perhaps 2,000 of them, were planning to be here on the high plains, camping out, all winter long if that’s what it takes to stop the pipeline. It was humbling, inspiring and, looking around, pret-

The fact that a good number of people are already sheltering in their vehicles because their tents and sleeping bags or blankets are inadequate meant a lot of them aren’t yet ready for the inclement weather. And time is running out, fast.

The good news is that the camps are incredibly well organized and winter preparations are going on literally around the clock. Several stove-heated, large canvass shelters that can sleep dozens have been erected, and tent campers are being encouraged to move into these group shelters at night. I suspect it doesn’t take much encouragement at 10 degrees.

Wooden shelters that can be more safely heated and keep out the wind are springing up all over the camps. The whole place looks and sounds a bit like a construction zone.

The DAPL protesters have come from all over the nation ­— and the world, for that matter. Our threetent BW camp was sandwiched between a Vermont contingent that included a 60-something-year-old gentleman on one side and a young couple who had traded their warm apartment in Kauai, Hawaii for a tent on the North Dakota plains in winter on the other. Both camps said they just felt like they had to be here for the duration to support the cause. We

heard that a lot. It is extraordinary how many people are planning to stay all winter long.

Although no one seemed to have a master list of all the indigenous groups represented at the camps, we were told on several occasions that the number has surpassed 300. While we can’t verify that number, it seems a reasonable estimate based upon the various tribal flags that have been erected by each group upon their arrival. During one 25-minute span at the media tent, a contingent from a Norwegian clan, dressed in wildly colorful traditional garb and carrying their flag,

checked in, as did three young women representing a tribe from Illinois.

The DAPL protest camps have become the largest gathering of indigenous peoples in well over a century. And I must say it’s an extraordinary sight to see as the sun rises over the ocean of colorful flags, teepees, tents and other handmade structures, wood smoke rising from morning fires until it blends into the low-hanging frozen fog. It really does feel like you’ve been transported back in time.

But the massive banks of floodlights eerily lighting the hills beyond the camp are a constant reminder that this is a scene with a purpose, or rather a few purposes. The lights illuminate the pipeline route so the massive law enforcement presence in the hills can guard their corporate charge from those who desire its demise.

One of the reasons the protesters call themselves water protectors is because the controversial pipeline, which they refer to as the black snake, is a direct threat to the water supply of the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation. hristmas typically implies a lot of wholesomeness like steaming beverages, wrapped packages ON THE BILL: A and a general influx in morality. But this John Waters Christmas. 7 p.m.

John Waters will appear at the Boulder Theater for his annual performance of A John Waters Christmas.

Those even vaguely acquainted with the work of Waters often remember “that movie where Divine eats dog poop.”

Indeed, Pink Flamingos, one of Waters’ most acclaimed films, featured the late actor and famed drag queen Divine’s consumption of a freshly laid dog dump, though Waters himself seems to find nothing much wrong with the act. “It’s just a turd,” he says. “Children do that.”

Waters began writing, directing and staring in art house films in the early 1970s — films that included traveling freak shows, murder, sex and one instance of a woman being accosted by a giant lobster.

They feature a slew of magnetic, curious characters played by actors deemed the Dreamlanders, including individuals as unconventionally mesmeric as Divine and Edith Massey.

At his Christmas shows, Waters takes his dark, raunchy humor and adapts it for the stage, touching on subjects like his love of giving dirty gifts and his obsession with Santa Clause.

Talking to Waters from his home before the Christmas tour began, he shares how his Christmas shows originated, his past work and the ugliness of a first class flight.

Q: You’ve been doing these Christmas shows for over 10 years now right? How did it start?

A: In one of my books I had a chapter called “Why I Love Christmas” and I think that my producer, after reading it, asked me to do a show based on that and it gently evolved over the years and became the John Waters Christmas that I do now, which is completely different from that one. But every year I update it and change it and rewrite it so it’s an ever-evolving project. But yes, I’ve been doing it for over a decade.

Q: You must have a real connection with the subject matter. Why keep doing it year after year?

A: Because I need to make a living.

Q: Is that really it?

A: Well, no. I love to tell stories. In a way it’s my anti-Alzheimer’sdisease exercise, too, because it’s 70-minutes long, completely written, and I do it on stage with no notes so it’s like working without a safety net. I have to memorize it. I also do it because I get to meet my fans.

I get to travel. I get to be in touch with the people that have been loyal to me for over 50 years. And I get to meet the new young people that I want to joyously fuck up. And it pays the bills; I can afford my Christmas presents.

Q: You and Divine did some sort of version of these, what you call your “Vaudville” shows, even before you did the Christmas shows, right?

A: Yeah, we would make appearances at colleges with [our] movies and we would come out and — a little bit like what Divine does in [the 1974 film] Female Trouble — he would rip phone books in half and throw dead fish at the audience. I had two stolen police uniforms that we traveled with, and we would get whoever we knew that had the shortest hair — which was really hard to find — to play the cops, and they would come onstage and pretend to arrest us. Then Divine would strangle them and then the show would begin. Now it’s so politically incorrect to even imagine doing it today — to make light of that. But at the time everybody roared and thought it was funny. Times change.

A: We might be more politically correct now, but it seems like current audiences are generally a lot less appalled by your work than they were when you started making films. Is this for better or worse?

A: To me it’s kind of funny that I now get these honorary degrees, but it’s great. It just makes me more insufferable: I want pay raises. I want tenure. I get very demanding.

You get to hear the nice things that people say about you, finally. But I will say that when I walk onstage for my shows and get a standing ovation I say, “Wait a minute, that’s just because I’m old. I didn’t even say anything yet.” If you get a standing ovation at the end it means they like what you said. If you get one before you say anything it’s like, “How did you ever stay alive this long?”

Which is a valid question.

Q: Do you think that’s because people are more open minded now or because you’re now this very established figure that people feel the need to applaud before you even say anything?

A: I think it’s both. Nobody gets mad at anything I say anymore even though I do push it. And that’s because I don’t think I’m mean. Any target of mine is either so popular that they don’t care that I don’t like them, or I say it in a way that is, hopefully, humorous.

Q: It seems like you’ve always been interested in creating work that’s obscure and grotesque...

A: Well, obscure I never wanted. Obscure would imply that nobody gets it, but I always wanted people to get my work. I wanted to be surprising. I wanted to be commercial. In my first book I have a chapter where I say that I always wanted to sell out but nobody would buy me.

Q: And how about the grotesque part? Would you agree with that?

A: I never did grotesque just for grotesque’s sake. Well, there are a couple times I did, now that I look back at [the 1970 film] Multiple Maniacs. But at the same I was always trying to make you laugh. In Multiple Maniacs I might have shown you something that was grotesque, but I kind of wanted to ask you to consider it.

Maybe it isn’t that grotesque. Maybe nothing is. [My last film] Dirty Shame had a lot of grotesque things about it, but at the same time I think it was asking the question, “As long as nobody’s hurting anybody, why do you care what people do in the privacy of their own home? Why is that threatening?” I’m just always interested in things that I don’t understand — that I don’t have a stock answer to.

Q: How do you feel about coming through Boulder?

A: The last time I was there I was hitchhiking, so I’m looking forward to coming back. It’s right about in the middle of the tour so hopefully I won’t be sick by then.

I’m doing 18 days, 18 airplanes, and you really have to wear a gas mask to survive it. I’m in first class, which does make a difference, except everyone is ugly.

Everyone is so ugly in first class. Like Halloween-costume ugly. And sometimes you have to sleep with them because when the beds go down there’s nothing in between. It’s like, “Watch it buster! Don’t have Roman hands and Russian fingers here!”

Knowing the subject matter of Waters’ films, you have to wonder what his perception of “Halloween-costume ugly” entails.

Paper Bird’s new self-titled album adapts to a changing world

“We made a very clear decision to start over and change our sound, and we’re really coming out full force,” she says before adding, “This is the perfect record to start over on.”

With help from producer John Oates of Hall & Oates, the band recorded their new album at Addiction Studios in Nashville, Tennessee.

“I got nervous and curled my hair before [I met Oates],” Anderson admits.

Anderson wasn’t the only one in the band with nervous energy.

“We were just in that zone, working our butts off,” she says. “It’s fun to look back on what we were writing. It’s like reading a journal.”

Anderson says Paper Bird wound up recording 50 potential tracks, settling on six that made the album. The band hit the road Nov. 1 — eager to “tour their little butts off,” as Anderson says — for the West Coast leg of their tour with Bostonbased public radio darlings The Ballroom Thieves.

“It feels so good,” she says. “There was a lot of anxiety leading up to [the release] for sure, because we just wanted to get it out. We’ve been playing these songs for quite a while and we were really ready just to get it into the world. Now we can relax a little bit more and just play these songs and just focus on our live performance.”

Although Paper Bird plans to tour as much as possible in the next year, the future remains unclear — on a number of levels. The conversation steers back toward the vaguely political. “[The election] was the most interesting thing that happened on this tour,” she says. “I think everyone’s had such an internal unraveling.”

Anderson cannot predict what the next year, or even four years have in store for her or her “family,” but one thing is clear: She is confident about sharing these new tunes with the world.

“We’re all doing...” she hesitates, takes a breath. “We’ve all got each other. It feels really good saying that,” she confesses before adding, “We’re feeling pretty clear about what we’re doing and why it feels good.”

arts & culture Who lives, who dies, who tells your story Bringing ‘Moana’ to the big screen

I

f someone asks you to name a mermaid, any mermaid, what is the first name that comes to mind? Lorelei?

Madison? Ariel? Probably the latter, right? You probably even conjured the image of the red-haired Disney princess. Just like when you pick up a Cinderella pumpkin from the store and the familiar image of a beautiful blue ball gown and helper mice pop into your brain. Heck, if someone tells you to, “Let it go,” you might even hear swelling strings and Idina Menzel in the back of your mind.

But mermaids, Italian fairy tales and three-word phrases don’t belong to The Walt Disney Company. Yet, Disney’s interpretations and adoption of popular myths and pop culture dominate how we think about, remember and specify the familiar. Disney historian Sam Gennawey calls this phenomenon “mental real estate” and it’s not just the root of what makes Disney movies work, it’s what makes them unforgettable.

That is because each Disney movie starts with extensive research. For their latest animated endeavor, Moana — the first to focus on the Pacific Islands — the Disney team let that research shape the story they wanted to tell.

“Initially, Ron and John [Clements and Musker, two of Moana’s directors] had a certain idea of the film they wanted to make,” story artist David G. Derrick recounts to Boulder Weekly. “John Lasseter [Disney’s overseer of animated production], he’s a stickler for research, he said, ‘If you’re going to tell Moana tells the story this story and set it in the of a chief’s daughter Pacific, you need to go there.’ as she helps restore life to her Polynesian “When they got there, island. they experienced the culture and people and completely changed the story,” Derrick continues. “A lot of people don’t realize it, but the Polynesian culture is a rich, vibrant culture that is still alive today.”

That culture is exactly what drew Derrick to the project in the first place. Originally scheduled to work on Zootopia, Derrick jumped ship for Moana because it allowed him to learn more about his own Polynesian heritage, specifically through a connection with his grandmother.

“When the first Polynesians came to Utah, they were forced to — they were segregated out — to this place called Skull Valley, which they named Iosepa,” Derrick says. “She died there and I made a rubbing of her grave, and I put that Boulder Weekly

up above my desk. “[It] reminded me why I was making this film. It was both a thank you and an apology at the same time, thanking her for this rich heritage that most people don’t fully understand and also an apology for the way she was treated. And all of Polynesia in general.”

That heritage, and the strength derived from it, is the thread on which Moana hangs. The story begins with an island besieged by a terrible plague. To lift the curse, the chief ’s daughter, Moana (voiced by newcomer Auli’i Cravalho), sets sail in search of the demigod Maui (voiced

by Dwayne Johnson), who can help her find the fertility god that will restore life to her island. “[Maui]’s stories are ubiquitous throughout all of Polynesia, and in my Samoan genealogy, the very first man is Maui,” Derrick explains.

“So it’s not just myth, it’s genealogy that’s important to all the different islands.”

But how does Disney emotionally convey that information to an audience that might not have attachment to Polynesian ancestry?

Hyrum Osmond, the cohead of animation for Moana, explains that Disney’s modus operandi is best summed up by legacy Disney animator Mark Henne: “We are not trying to create realistic characters, we are trying to create believable characters that audiences can connect with.”

It also helps when the characters come with catchy songs, here provided by Hamilton scribe Lin-Manuel Miranda and performer Opetaia Foa’i, member of the Oceania music group Te Vaka.

American audiences may not be familiar with the stories of Maui or the adventure of Moana, but thanks to top shelf animation and a jaunty jingle from a covetous crab, Moana is destined to take up some mental real estate in moviegoers’ minds.

“There was one man [we met] named Papa Mapei who passed away before the film came out,” Derrick recounts.

“He had a quote that really imbued to us the importance of the film: ‘Culturally, you guys have swallowed our culture.

For once, let us swallow you.’

“There was a richness to this culture that I had an understanding of, but it went so much deeper,” Derrick says.

“I mean, the Polynesian culture created the largest cultural footprint of any culture prior to European expansion.

Nobody teaches you that in history.”

Thankfully movies do. Moana is currently in wide release.

‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ lost me

H

ere, in Trump’s America, the question is no longer “Why do bad things happen to good people?” but “Why do good people do bad, dumb things?”

J.K. Rowling is a gifted author and a provably decent human being who has just done a bad, dumb thing. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is, fitting to its title, a goddamn monstrosity; it is a plot-free assault on goodwill whose franchise aspirations now feel like a threat to our pop cultural safety.

Nothing of consequence happens in Fantastic Beasts, but here’s what occurs while noises are made and lights are flashed: Newt (Eddie Redmayne) comes to America in the 1920s with a magic suitcase containing lots of crazy creatures. Some get loose. A Brooklyn mustache attached to a chubby person, Kowalski (Dan Fogler), helps Newt find said creatures with the help of Tina (Katherine Waterston) and her sister Queenie (Alison Sudol).

Meanwhile, Graves (Colin Farrell) tries to get Credence (Ezra Miller) to help him do bad things, presumably because both are angry about their haircuts.

I swear to God, that’s all that happens.

Fantastic Beasts is one of those movies that confuses characters having traits for characterization. Kowalski makes donuts. Newt has mussed-up hair and poor eye contact.

Oh, and it’s racist. Yeah, like, blatantly racist. A black actress delivers lines that would be at home in the mouth of a “Mammy” figure from the heyday of openly racist cinema shortly before a jazz ditty is belted by a house elf that looks like Nina Simone or Billie Holiday. House elves, of course, are slaves.

Yikes.

And before anyone else suggests it, having an actress of color as the president of American magic, Seraphina Picquery (Carmen Ejogo), isn’t a counterbalance.

Especially not when you consider how she gets almost every fact wrong and exhibits an enthusiasm for a near police state. To be clear, I’m not suggesting Rowling intended all of this. But I’m thinking this last month has been a testimonial in why no racist bullshit should go unchecked. Ever.

Fantastic Beasts has some pretty special effects. It also has a glowing-horned rhino thing that tries to sodomize a flop-sweat-laden New Yorkian stereotype. One of those things will stick with you longer than the other. The stakes are totally nonexistent, likely hanging out wherever the villain’s motivation pissed off to, and the relationships between the characters can, at best, be hailed as “scripted.”

Fantastic Beasts is an unnecessary installment of a beloved franchise that features a stupid caricature doing slapstick comedy, a repetitive villain, racist minor characters, poor acting and pretty special effects. So, let’s just call this what it is. I’m sorry Potterheads, you just got Phantom Menace-d.

‘The Handmaiden’ is coming for ya

However, the walls of respectability are crumbling. Recent trends in art-house films have turned sex, particularly lesbian sex and S&M, into cinematic Trojan Horses, enticing mainstream audiences to movies that are left of the dial. Unlike the rinky-dink kink of 50 Shades of Grey, films like Blue is the Warmest Color, The Duke of Burgundy, Carol and now The Handmaiden have embraced the carnal pleasures of the flesh while spinning subversive tales of love, sex, power and corruption.

For The Handmaiden, master Korean director Park The Handmaiden tackles sex, power and corruption.

Chan-wook transports Sarah Water’s historical crime novel Fingersmith to preWorld Word II Japanese-occupied Korea, mixes in elements of Hitchcock into the already labyrinthine plot and decorates his frame with sumptuous production design, costuming and sex. The result is enticingly giddy in its psychological corruption, both of the characters — it’s a standard gas-lighting plot — and of audience expectation.

To achieve this effect, Park uses multiple red herrings to build a twisty story of deception, starting with conman Count Fujiwara (Ha Jung-woo) hiring pickpocket Sook-hee (Kim Tae-ri) to assist him in his elaborate scheme. Fujiwara plants Sook-hee as a handmaiden to the rich heiress Lady Hideko (Kim Min-hee), a beautiful woman under the thumb of the ruthless Uncle Kouzuki (Cho Jin-woong), a collector of rare and ancient erotica.

Fujiwara’s plan is to use Sook-hee as Hideko’s double and commit her to an insane asylum in Hideko’s place so that Fujiwara and Hideko, now under an assumed identity, can run off to Russia together. To put this plan in motion, Sook-hee and Hideko must grow close publically so that Kouzuki, or any other authoritarian man in Hideko’s life, does not question the deception. But as Sook-hee and Hideko spend time together, they grow closer and begin to develop plans of their own.

The Handmaiden is a sexy, and at times gratuitous movie, but there is more at work here than simple eroticism. By depicting a lesbian sex scene in the detail that Park does, he focuses on the pleasure of the scene and the pleasures both women draw from it. A pleasure that is vehemently denied them anytime they are in a room with a man. When the men try their hand at seduction, they construct dirty stories of rape and violation.

They get their kicks from submission, not passion, which is what these women are seeking. As the story continues to unfold, and then fold back, it becomes clearer and clearer that the main thrust of Park’s subversion is how men see the world, specifically how men see sex, and how misleading and wrong their perspective is.

hen Mark and Carmen Sample set out to found Samples World Bistro in downtown Longmont, they had a couple of objectives. One was to create a rotating menu of delicious international foods, paired with a robust selection of beer, wine and cider on tap. But more importantly, the couple set out to create a place of business that would offer work skills training and meaningful job opportunities to persons with intellectual disabilities.

The Samples have done this through their foundation Sample Supports, which also provides jobs to this underserved population at Crystal Joys, a jewelry store, rock shop and apothecary with locations in Longmont and Fort Collins.

My dining partner and I decided to head to Samples for a late brunch recently. I went for a longtime favorite dish, something my mother makes every Christmas Eve, quiche.

While Samples World Bistro is appealing on its own — with its spot right on Main Street, its cozy wood-paneled interior and, of course, an appealing menu of international delights and beers from all over — knowing the restaurant enriches lives makes it immeasurably charming.

Samples serves three small quiches of the muffin tin variety, filled with cremini mushrooms, baby spinach and tomatoes. The quiches are then covered in hollandaise and served with red flannel hash.

Quiche is a simple dish — just crust, eggs, milk (or cream) and whatever fillings make your heart pitter patter. But it’s often the simplest dishes that prove the trickiest to get just right.

With quiche, the trick lies in balancing the eggs and dairy. The eggs works to set the dairy, but add too many and the pie becomes rubbery. You need a little

wobble in the quiche for a moist, silky custard all the way through. Samples delivers on this wobbly quiche, accentuating it with the lemony bite of hollandaise — another eggbased dish requiring a cook’s complete attention to create a smooth, balanced sauce.

I’m ashamed to say I’d never had red flannel hash, though its mixture of potatoes, beets and onions suggests it should be one of my favorite dishes. The bartender who served our food explained that while they usually served quartered beets, the cooks were experimenting with finely minced beets to better distribute that warm, earthy beet flavor throughout the hash. The effect is almost celebratory, with bits of beet covering the potatoes like an explosion of confetti.

Beyond the visually pleasing aesthetic, the potatoes were tender without being mushy, and the hash avoided the oily fate that befalls too many iterations of the dish.

So while Samples filled our bellies with delicious food, what it really filled us with was a renewed sense of community, and perhaps that’s what the best local businesses do.

SAVING THANKSGIVING How to turn the remains of the feast into months of flavor

I

f you are hosting Thanksgiving at your house today, complete with “Alice’s Restaurant” playing in the background, you probably won’t read this until well after the feast.

Hosts spend weeks getting ready for that peak moment when everybody is finally seated and filling their plates. They will grab some turkey, yams and stuffing, but hosts also thinking about filling wine glasses and getting dessert. The nature and joy of hospitality is that your focus is on guests until the final, full person departs.

Thanksgiving hosts, like me, love the day after the dinner... as long as someone else has already cleaned up and washed the dishes.

I love warming up a plate of veggie side dishes, two stuffings, turkey and gravy, and pie, or grabbing a turkey sandwich on white toast with mayo, lettuce, tomato and bacon.

Black Friday is also the day I set about preserving the precious

leftovers, and saving the flavors and the investment in ingredients and time. It is also a personal statement against food waste. I find the effort well worth it on a February evening when I can pull a dinner that can’t be beat out of the freezer.

Here are a few leftover tips from a veteran Thanksgiving host: Turkey stock: When you put the turkey in the oven put the neck and heart in a pan and simmer for an hour. You can use the broth to make gravy. Whatever you do, don’t dispose of that precious turkey carcass after you remove all the meat. Simmer it in a deep sauce pan covered with water (or water saved from boiling potatoes). Add some chopped onions, carrots and celery and simmer covered for at least an hour. Strain the broth. Pastry-crusted fruit pies tend to get mushy when thawed so reheat them in an oven, not a microwave. There are few foods that do not taste better baked between flaky sheets of buttery crust. Trust me, I’ve tried them all.

Leftovers including mashed potatoes, candied yams, stuffing, green bean casserole, turkey and gravy can make exceptional pie fillings. Here’s how you do it: Make or buy two 9-inch pie crusts. Preheat your oven to 325 degrees. Place a deep-dish pie pan (preferably glass) on a sheet pan. Line the bottom with pie crust and fill with leftovers. Top with crust, crimp the edges and cut vents. Bake for about 45 minutes or until the crust is light golden brown. Serve warm as an entrée or as a memorable side dish.

Rolls and bread: If you don’t want to bake bread pudding or panzanella salad, breads usually freeze well in sealed bags. You can also crumble dinner buns and dry them in a low oven for bread crumbs.

Side dishes: Sweet potatoes, green bean casserole and other side dishes typically freeze well along with cranberry sauce (out of the can) and sticks of butter.

Mark the containers so you remember what’s in there.

Gravy: Use leftover gravy in your next batch of green chile or freeze in cubes for later use.

Salad: Just eat it. You need the fiber.

Your friend’s awful bulgur casserole thing that everybody secretly hated: Mark clearly and freeze in individual portions that can be easily thrown out in the spring.

With this atmosphere, an evening stroll down Main Street is a pleasant way to spend an evening. Especially if that stroll ends at that lovely little brewery where Belgian-style beers reign supreme, 12Degree Brewing.

Anywhere else, this mash-up might smack of hipsterdom, but in Louisville, Belgian beer and a Thief of Bagdad coloring book from 1940 seems right as rain.

As one might suspect from their name, 12Degree Brewing offers a selection of 12 beers at any one time, with their award winners leading the pack. Both the Treachery Golden Strong Ale (8% ABV) and the Soleil Saison (6.9%) took home awards at this year’s World Beer Cup — gold and bronze respectively — with Treachery netting a bronze medal at the Great American Beer Fest this past October. Both exhibit 12Degree’s signature style, namely crisp and clean with an unmistakable hint of fruit.

That fruit, primarily tropical fruit, can also be found in their blonde ale, 48 Hours (6.5%), their variation on a pale ale, Grapefruit Express (6.8%), and their American IPA, Inconceivable (6.7%). All three use Citra hops to add hints of passion fruit, lychee and citrus to balance out the bitter and bready flavors of the beers.

But as delicious as these beers are, they are the sort of thing one wants on a sunny afternoon or a warm autumn evening. What to drink when the snow falls?

Why it’s the Midnight Fog, of course. This Belgian quadruple tops out at 9.6% ABV and has the color of molasses, the smell of coffee and the flavor of brown sugar. Midnight Fog is the kind of beer that warms up your insides no matter how cold it is outside.

12Degree Brewing is a lovely place to enjoy beer and pizza, but on Thursday nights 12Degree spins vinyl that customers bring from their personal collections with an added bonus: If they spin your record, your next beer is on them. I guess I’ll have to dig out my copy of Miles Davis’s Kind of Blue because “Flamenco Sketches” was meant to be played while quaffing Midnight Fog and watching the flakes fall.

There’s nothing about going to D.C. that precludes making a donation to the American Civil Liberties Union (aclu. org) or the National Center for Lesbian Rights (nclrights.org) or the International Refugee Assistance Project (refugeerights.org), of course, and symbolic acts of resistance (demonstrations, zaps, protests) often inspire people to engage in practical acts of resistance (donating money, monkey-wrenching discriminatory “registries,” urging local elected officials to not cooperate with anti-immigrant/anti-Muslim directives).

While the intention is laudable, the process is slow, Vergara says, and ultimately won’t solve the problem.

“The government is never going to be able to compete against the strains from the private market because these are people, breeders and growers, who have been growing cannabis for I don’t know how many decades,” Vergara says. “Not only do they have a lot of experience but their progress is fueled by competition of the market.

“In my opinion the best thing is for them to allow us to work with the cannabis that is produced by the private market that people are consuming.”

Like most things in the emerging legal cannabis market, the scientific path forward isn’t clear, easy or straightforward.

In entering the field, researchers make a risky personal and professional choice — choosing to study a federally illegal substance forces them to grapple with longstanding social and ethical stigmas.

“I was scared of what my peers would say, but overall they have been very supportive,” Vergara says. “[But in making the career move] several professors told me that if I am doing good science, it doesn’t matter. Someone has to do it and if I don’t do it someone else will do it.”

So Vergara understands the difficult position institutions, like CU, find themselves in — schools like these rely on federal grants and studying marijuana isn’t often worth the risk of losing those funds. Despite its positioning in Colorado — the frontier of all things cannabis — CU has yet to receive government funding for research.

This makes a study like this, one that questions a premise of the basic science of marijuana, a big deal, not only for consumers across America, but because becoming a leading expert in cannabis could be lucrative for the university.

“Colorado is the pioneer, and I think it is a great opportunity for CU,” Vergara says. “But I don’t know if they have realized this, that as scientists we are struggling to be pioneers in this, that it is a huge opportunity and a gold mine and we are the first ones to be able to exploit it.”

Yikes! Sessions!

T

he mainstream media has taken time out from its busy schedule of compulsively rewriting Donald Trump’s obituary to report that Trump’s appointment of Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions as his Attorney General has left the marijuana industry — recreational, medical and illegal — quivering in its boots.

Chances are the mainstream media is wrong about the quivering part. People who go into the marijuana business don’t scare easily. But if they aren’t concerned, they haven’t been paying attention.

Sessions is one of the worst marijuana prohibitionists in the Congress. He has been virulently antipot throughout his public career, right up to last April when during a Senate hearing on drugs he unburdened himself of the following remarks about marijuana legalization: “[W]e need grown-ups in charge in Washington to say marijuana is not the kind of thing that ought to be legalized, it ought not to be minimized, that it’s in fact a very real danger.”

He went on to say that he thought one of Obama’s “great failures” is his “lax treatment” of marijuana in his public comments. “It reverses 20 years almost of hostility to drugs that began really when Nancy Reagan started ‘Just Say No.’” And lawmakers and other government officials needed to foster “knowledge that this drug is dangerous, you cannot play with it. It is not funny, it’s not something to laugh about... and to send that message with clarity that good people don’t smoke marijuana,” he said.

So does this mean that Sessions is going to go after the eight states that have legalized recreational marijuana and the 29 states that have legalized medical marijuana use?

And does it mean that Trump, by appointing Sessions, is signaling that he wants to resume the

federal government’s war on ganja?

Trying to predict what Trump really wants or intends to do is a risky business. The only certainty here is that Sessions works for Trump, and Trump will have the final say on what his administration will do about marijuana.

My guess is that Trump will not set off a new war on pot, and he will keep Sessions from starting one on his own, as well.

Here’s why: •Trump has already said he thinks marijuana legalization should be “a state issue, state-by-state.” Why should he abandon a stand that helped get him elected?

•Trump knows how to read polls, and he knows pot prohibition is an idea that’s long past its expiration date.

•There’s nothing in it for Trump. By going after legalized marijuana, he attracts no support he doesn’t already have, and he alienates a lot of supporters and potential supporters he needs.

•In the latest Gallup poll, support among 18-34 year olds for legalizing marijuana reached 77 percent.

Trump needs the young, and marijuana looks to be a path to millennials’ hearts. Attacking pot will just piss them off.

•Trump hired Sessions because of his stands on immigration, not pot.

•If Sessions continues to be a hard ass on mari-

juana, he may not get confirmed.

The Senate may find it easier to ignore the racist comments he made 20 or 30 years ago than the anti-marijuana comments he made last April.

•Trump can turn marijuana into a states’ rights issue that will both appeal to liberals and give Republicans a face-saving way to ditch the drug war.

•There isn’t much down-side within the Republican Party for ditching the war on pot. The latest Gallup poll on marijuana found Republican support for legalizing marijuana had risen to 42 percent. Few Republicans are going to break ranks with Trump over pot if he decides to go rogue on the issue. The party has pretty much reconciled itself to Trump charting his own course on social agenda issues — especially social agenda issues that are stunting the party’s ability to grow.

•If Trump is serious about reaching out to Black America, a good way to start would be to quit arresting black people for marijuana.

Of course, it’s always possible that Trump will decide to double down on the drug war, as presidents since Nixon have done.

But past presidents haven’t encountered any serious downside for doing so. That isn’t the case anymore.

We have finally figured out Donald Trump’s style of governing. Every day he wakes up, declares a do-over, and reinvents all of his positions based upon who is standing in front of him. We don’t mean he starts all over in his efforts to accomplish this or that. We mean he actually starts each day by staking out his position on any given subject as if he was hearing about it for the very first time. “I’ll put Hillary in jail” on one day, becomes, “I respect her and have no desire to prosecute her for anything” on the next.

Wikimedia Commons Or how about his, “I’m taking the U.S. off the COP 21 agreement,” which he uttered about a week ago, but then after sleeping on it woke up and said, “I’m open to enforcing COP 21.” Why the change of heart on COP 21 besides just being too dumb to remember what he told somebody previously? Maybe it’s because his position on global warming went from saying it was just a conspiracy theory invented by the Chinese to now agreeing that human activity is contributing to climate change.

And who can forget how he was going to put his businesses into a blind trust, only to wake up with yet another new revelation: “I’m going to keep them because the President has immunity from being sued.”

Get use to it folks, this is the real Donald Trump. He can’t remember what lies he has told, has no moral compass to guide his path, says whatever he thinks people want to hear, and in the end just wants to make more money.

In other words, Trumpo is just another establishment politician who said what he had to get elected and is now selling his supporters down the river.

Unfortunately, an establishment Republican government that controls every branch is a pretty darn scary proposition in its own right. We have more than a reality TV star to fear.

SERIOUSLY, CAN’T WE HAVE ANYTHING NICE? It’s been scientifically proven that 2016 is one of the worst years in recent history. The long list of atrocities this year has committed is too long for comfort. As citizens of Earth take shelter for the last few weeks of this hellish trash fire of a year, we pack our sanctuaries with all the comforts we can muster: our favorite movie, a warm blanket and snacks, lots of snacks.
