Danish and GMOs

Correction and clarification: The “Politics of pills” story (Nov. 17) stated that the “gray market’s inflated pricing costs the health care industry approximately $213 million a year.” The actual figure should have read $200 million a year.

And as a point of clarification at the company’s request, the Premier Healthcare Alliance report that documented the drug offers of 18 gray market vendors did not identify any of those 18 gray market vendors, and Premier has not publicly released the names of any of said gray market vendors subsequent to the publishing of the report.

Dog story unbalanced Your recent “Surviving shelters” story (cover story, Nov. 10) was unbalanced at best. At worst, it undermines the positive outcome that results when animal shelters and rescue organizations work together. There are many approaches to saving the lives of animals whose relationships with their guardians have been severed for one reason or another. Each animal welfare organization plays a role in the ultimate goal — finding loving homes for as many adoptable animals as possible.

I’m talking about the growing movement of small farmers, food artisans, local retailers, co-ops, community organizers, restaurateurs, environmentalists, consumers and others — perhaps including you. This movement has spread the rich ideas of sustainability, organic, local economies, and the Common Good from the fringe of our food economy into the mainstream.

It began as an “upchuck rebellion” — ordinary folks rejecting the industrialized, chemicalized, corporatized and globalized food system. Farmers wanted a more natural connection to the good earth that they were working. Meanwhile, consumers began seeking edibles that were not saturated with pesticides, injected with antibiotics, ripened with chemicals, dosed with artificial flavorings and otherwise tortured.

America’s good food movement

by Jim Hightower These two interests began to find each other and to create an alternative way of thinking about food. Today, more than 13,000 organic farmers produce everything from wheat to meat, and organic sales top nearly $27 billion a year. Some 7,000 vibrant farmers’ markets operate in practically every city and town across the land, linking farmers and food makers directly to consumers in a local, supportive economy. Restaurants, supermarkets, food

Paul, your rambling tirade against the citizens of Boulder County who refuse to allow GMOs to be grown on their land is one of the more miserable excuses for a compelling argument I’ve ever read.

Not only do you downplay the plethora and depth of scientific, peer-reviewed articles and studies that show GMOs not to be safe, but you condescend those that have done such research as Luddites, emotional and “evil” reactionaries sadistically intent on starving the developing world.

Do your research, and you’ll find that organic, permaculture and other more naturally harmonious agricultural practices offer far higher yield than GMOs have ever offered, all without the corporate debt, weed and pest problems, and litigation potential associated with, indeed ingrained in, the GMO farming model.

Do some more research and you’ll find that the Third World starves because of lack of access to, not shortage of, food.

So, before pontificating in such an outrageously ignorant and offensive manner, you should at least come up to par with the informed folks who care enough about their communities and the integrity of their food to put up a fight against the intrusion of wind- and pollen-carried patent infringements waiting to happen, courtesy of the company that brought you Agent Orange and DDT. Your hateful judgmentality is truly astounding, but I can’t return your disdain in good faith. Rather, I mourn for the see LETTERS Page 6

wholesalers and school districts are now buying foodstuffs that are produced sustainably and locally.

This shift did not come from corporate or governmental powers — it percolated up from the grassroots. And it’s spreading, as ordinary people inform themselves, organize locally, and assert their own democratic values over those of the corporate structure.

Stephon Smith/Boulder Paul Danish has had the courage to put in print his understanding of the position taken by the anti-GMO lobby and has explained his reasoning very well; so well, in fact, that I hope that at least some readers will amend their opinions of plant biotechnology and start to appreciate that the adoption of this science has a great deal to offer the world and very little to threaten it.

Just suppose we had already adopted genetic modification as an established method of plant breeding and then someone somewhere suggested that we should use mutagenesis instead. The rational thinker would, I am sure, be horrified, and there is at least some evidence (although not much) to suggest that mutagenesis can be harmful. Whoever you are, Mr. Danish, I congratulate you on both your courage and understanding of this subject and I hope that other publications have the

backbone to publish this article and others on this theme. You have grasped the main issues well and then explained them clearly and in a very readable way.

ith the “Occupy” movement now in its second month, the holiday season has begun. It will be interesting to see how those who are a part of that movement — and those who sympathize with it — celebrate their holidays.

Here’s how Wall Street wants you to celebrate the holidays: spend, spend, spend. They want you to rush out and shop until your credit cards are smokin’ hot. They want the affection you feel for your loved ones to translate into stuff — more sweaters, more iGadgets, more games and toys. They want your money to trickle up, not only through your purchases, but also through the credit card interest you’ll be paying until the next holiday season. Who cares if you protest as long as you buy more shit?

According to a shopping survey conducted for the National Retail Federation by BIGresearch, up to 152 million people plan to shop Black Friday weekend, up from the 138 million people who planned to do so in 2010. Retail sales are expected to reach $465.6 billion during the holiday season, a slight increase over last year.

Banks are doing their bit by offering sweet credit deals. Capital One will offer rewards to consumers who shop through its online retail service. BankAmericard will offer a variety of cash-back options depending on what you buy, where you buy it and which card you carry. Other credit companies are offering cash back on purchases made on Black Friday and through that weekend.

They want your business. Yes, they do. It’s not just so that they can earn a decent living. This is how Wall Street occupies you.

There are alternatives, of course, but Americans are no more in favor of “austerity measures” than any other bunch of well-trained consumers. Still, it’s possible to put gifts under the tree without running up credit cards, and it’s easy to spend your holiday dollars in ways that support this community and not Wall Street. Here are some tips: Take a realistic look at your budget.

What can you afford without using credit? Do you really need to buy gifts for all of those people? Perhaps you can express your affection and share holiday cheer through homemade cookies, candy,

bread or hot chocolate mix.

Think about the people on your gift-giving list. What kind of personal services or experiences can you offer them that they might enjoy? If you’re handy around the house, perhaps there are repairs you can tackle for them. If you’re ultra-organized, maybe you can take on their filing cabinets, garage or closets. Or maybe you can babysit their kids so they can have a romantic night out. The options are almost endless and require nothing more than your time — and your willingness to give from the heart.

When you do choose to spend, buy goods and services from locally owned businesses. Boulder residents give a lot of lip service to the idea of shopping locally, but far too often they overlook locally owned businesses in favor of chains. Perhaps it’s a matter of habit, or perhaps people just don’t stop to think long enough before they walk through a retailer’s front doors.

In truth, it takes very little effort to retrain yourself and develop focused shopping habits. You’ll discover how easy it is to buy most things on your holiday shopping list — from food to clothing to services — from local retailers and artisans. Shopping locally is one of the best ways to “occupy Wall Street,” because it keeps your hard-earned dollars in the community, helping local restaurants, retailers and other service providers pay their employees and keep their doors open. Many local retailers also have gift cards as well as online sites, offering those of you who like to shop via the Internet a way to enjoy that option while still supporting your neighbors.

Wall Street is so powerful because it sits atop a global system of multinational corporations that suck up people’s money through a vortex of greed. When you shop locally — when you leave the global economy behind and localize your life — you withdraw from that destructive economic system and begin creating your own.

due to cross-pollination, etc. Indeed, one could quite easily apply the aforementioned statement to Mr. Danish’s own behavior, because in an objective sense, by voicing his opinion, isn’t Mr. Danish engaging in his own form of “tampering for political gain”? Perhaps Mr. Danish should have said “political gain that subverts my own personal opinion”?

This D-minus journalism wouldn’t pass muster in a freshman year college term paper, so why does it fly in the real world? Does the Boulder Weekly simply publish Mr. Danish so as to ensure a healthy batch of editorial comments for

the next issue?

Mr. Danish would do well to think more objectively about his “opinions” before his moribund world-views embarrass him even further; I’d be laughing if his angle wasn’t so scary.

I would have referred to “Smoker’s Block” as “Smokers’ Bloc,” but then everyone is entitled to a Rick Perry moment.

Eighteen- to 29-year-olds are Obama’s strongest constituency, and he has consistently ridiculed them and given them the back of his hand for even raising the pot legalization issue — despite the fact that it is the issue that they have most wanted him to address whenever he has asked Americans to tell the White House what issues they want him to speak to.

Now what if Herman Cain (or any other Republican candidate, for that matter), were to say, “About this marijuana legalization thing — I think the federal government should leave the issue of legalization up to the states”? (This would be similar to how the 21st Amendment ended Prohibition; it made booze a state issue.) If a Republican were to do that, I think it would be like Nixon going to China — and I think we could well see that 18-29 demographic fracture and a substantial part of it drain out of Obama’s base. Especially since Obama gets in touch with his inner nanny statist whenever the issue of pot comes up. Put that in your pipe and smoke it, buster.

Adams also writes: “Who will stand up for the willfully ignorant? It will certainly not be the egg-headed do-gooder liberal elite.”

Come on, man! The Occupy Wall Street movement is hands down the most inchoate and willfully ignorant political movement to appear in my lifetime — and “the egg-headed, do-gooder liberal elite” (his phrase, not mine) are its loudest cheerleaders.

Racial pissing match There’s a political war raging over Colorado’s 6th Congressional District.

What makes this battle interesting isn’t the warring factions of Democrats and Republicans (snooze), but rather their weapon of choice, Hispanic people. No kidding.

Both sides are trying to screw each other out of a Congressional seat by way of remapping current Republican Rep. Mike Coffman’s district. The redistricting map drawn up by Dems and approved by Denver District Judge Robert Hyatt on Nov. 10 would increase the size of the Hispanic population who have to call Coffman their Congressman from 9 percent to a whopping 20 percent of the district’s overall population. On the surface it’s a slick political move, as the Dems are thinking that the Hispanic folk manipulated into Coffman’s district by their map will naturally vote for the first Democrat available.

But talk about screwed. Did Democrats bother to ask all those Hispanic folks if they wanted to wake up one day in a long-time Republican-held district? Or did the Dems just sacrifice a sizable Hispanic population like cannon fodder in order to win a political pissing match?

If it smells like racism, tastes like racism, it’s racism, no matter which party is the author.

Leave that animal alone Stop the presses, this just in. A real shocker.

Turns out that guys who have sex with animals have a higher risk of contracting penis cancer.

As aptly described on the Huff Post, “This couldn’t happen to a nicer group of guys.

If you’re searching for a reason not to have sex with animals, add this to the list.”

A study in the Journal of Sexual Medicine says men who have sex with animals are twice as likely to get penile cancer as those who stick to humans.

Fracking flaws

Spills not uncommon at oil/gas well sites, even in Boulder County

t about 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 17, a liquid began shooting 40 to 50 feet into the air at a natural gas pipeline in Windsor.

Neighbors concerned about recent reports of hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” in the area took photos of the spill at 32744 Weld County Road 13. The pictures show the liquid pouring into the street and down a roadside ditch that leads to the Cache La Poudre River only two-tenths of a mile away, just past the Frank State Wildlife Area.

But Roz Elliott, spokesperson for DCP Midstream, told Boulder Weekly that the company was simply testing the integrity of an out-ofservice pipeline by shooting water into it at a high pressure, to make sure it could withstand such pressures if it were brought back into service. She says the pipe “yielded,” or, in layman’s terms, sprung a leak.

According to Elliott, even though it was only water and no remediation is required, the spill exceeded five gallons, so the company reported it to the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC) as required.

While the Windsor gusher may have been only water, spills of hydraulic fracturing (fracking) fluid and other liquids are not as uncommon as one might think.

In Boulder County alone, which is not exactly a hotbed of drilling activity compared to neighboring Weld County, there were 13 spills self-reported by oil and gas companies in 2010 and 2011.

According to COGCC records, all but one were reported by Noble Energy Production, and one of those spills occurred on open space land that has a county conservation easement. (Encana Oil and Gas reported one spill as well during that period.)

found no groundwater contamination, even though the initial report submitted to the COGCC said the opposite. Flaherty described the incident as discovery of a past leak, not an active spill, and he said most of the other 12 releases were due to “historical issues” as well.

“All of these are relatively minor,” he told Boulder Weekly, adding that none of them were a result of active drilling. “The spills are not related to hydraulic fracturing.”

The one exception, Flaherty says, was a January 2010 spill in which a worker failed to close a valve.

When asked why Noble reported so many more spills than any other company, Flaherty didn’t rule out the possibility that Noble has a much higher number of wells in the county than any other entity, but he couldn’t give specific numbers.

He did say, however, that the company is aggressive about reporting every spill. Flaherty stopped short of saying that other operators may not be as vigilant about self-reporting.

“I won’t speak for other companies, I can just tell you that internally, management has a very strict policy that we report everything to the COGCC,” he says. “We spill coffee on a site, we report it.”

Bob Chesson of the COGCC, an environmental protection specialist who receives reports of spills in northeastern Colorado, claims that oil and gas companies are very careful to avoid spills, because they can drain profits.

“It costs them money to do it, and they don’t want to do it any more than they have to,” Chesson says.

“The process is closely monitored by the companies because it’s expensive.”

“We’re all very vigilant about reporting our spills,” says Wendy Wiedenbeck, community relations advisor for Encana. “It costs time and money to clean those up, but that’s not the motivation. The motivation is it’s not good for business and not good for the environment.”

Chesson agrees that operators are good about reporting their spills to the state.

“They’re held to the same standards as any industrial activity is in the state of Colorado,” Chesson explains. “We do get a lot of spill reports, spills are self-reported. If we find that an operator is not reporting spills, they’re liable for all sorts of enforcement issues, and they don’t want to do that.”

operator must present a remediation plan for the COGCC’s approval if there is any contamination.

“We occasionally have a disagreement about what we think, but ultimately they have to do what we say, because we’re the ones that give them the agreement that no further action is necessary for remediation,” Chesson says.

“Human beings are fallible, so spills and releases sometimes occur,” says Dave Neslin, COGCC director.

But considering that there are about 46,000 active wells in Colorado, he says, the data shows that spills are infrequent. Neslin also notes that in the past year and a half, the state has assessed more than $1.6 million in penalties and violations associated with spills.

When asked whether some operators are more responsible about reporting spills than others, he told Boulder Weekly, “That’s not something I’ve investigated, so I don’t know. Overall, I’d say industry does a pretty good job of self-reporting.”

County: Culprit is soil damage, not spills

ob Alexander, agricultural resource specialist for Boulder County Parks and Open Space, says the real problem with oil and gas companies on open space is not so much spills as it is other impacts from drilling operations.

“We haven’t had a lot of problems with spills,” he says. “They just aren’t that frequent. Our problems have been other things, like impacts to soils.

Once they go in and disturb an irrigated cropland, it’s never the same again.”

According to Alexander, a tile drainage system about four feet under the surface at one site was damaged so severely by drilling operations a few years ago that now the soil is saturated and has an altered chemical character that no longer supports farming. But the county couldn’t prove it was caused by the drilling operation.

“In some places, nothing grows, not even weeds,” Alexander says of the property. “You might be able to get something to grow, but it really doesn’t produce. It’s affecting the private land across the road from ours even worse.”

He says Encana is the company that the county has had the most problems with.

“They’ve left some messes and haven’t cleaned them up,” Alexander says. “We have a whole list. … We’ve got some doozies that are still not the same.”

Wendy Wiedenbeck, community relations advisor for Encana, responded to the complaint about the aftermath of its drilling operations.

“That’s unfortunate,” she told Boulder Weekly. “Clearly, we have some work to do in Boulder County. We’ve had a lot of success with our reclamations in Boulder County and in other municipalities, but we don’t always have success. Some locations are easier to reclaim than others, and some locations have a variety of issues, whether they’re seasonal weather issues, prairie dogs, noxious weeds — there are locations that become a little more challenging than others.

“We have a lot of leaseholders who grow crops on their land and have great success when our work is done,” Wiedenbeck adds. “Are there isolated incidents where maybe a certain location hasn’t had success? Again, you’re going to have locations like that across the field.”

everal times a week, 47-year-old Ron Cobbley does his part to serve Boulder’s homeless. He spends much of his time assisting First Presbyterian Church with a lunch for the homeless and greets visitors by name or with a friendly pat on the back. Few would know that Cobbley is homeless himself.

Cobbley has been involved with the church for more than 20 years. His father was Mormon, and he says that fact is what has given him his character and desire to be involved with a church.

Despite having no physical place to call home, he feels a sense of community with his church.

“The church has practically become my family,” he says. “It’s pretty much my backbone.”

Boulder’s religious organizations affect many homeless people’s lives, and now that it is the holiday season, Cobbley says he expects to see the amount of giving increase.

“It’s really awesome to see people getting help that need help,” he says.

The holidays are a time for Boulder’s faith community to reach out to those in need. And in a time of recession, there are more and more families in need of food, clothing, supplies and shelter, says Kay Gazaway, marketing and event coordinator for EFAA, the Emergency Family Assistance Association. As of Nov. 1, the organization was seeing a record number of families that needed help.

Boulder’s faith communities play crucial role in helping the needy

“It’s a telling sign that the economy is a trying time for many people,” she says.

For many congregations, a certain amount of money is budgeted to give away each month, she says. However, individual giving rises during the holidays, she says, in part because many people want to help families try to keep things as normal as possible. “[Congregations] as a whole don’t give more, but individuals give more,” Gazaway says. “It’s the season of giving.

I presume that touches people’s hearts.”

This year EFAA held a holiday food basket drive, which provided people with 1,000 baskets containing food and staple items, and many local congregations participated. Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Boulder, for instance, gave EFAA 200 cans of evaporated milk for people to make pumpkin pies, she says.

Community Food Share in Longmont receives a lot of support from the local faith community, says Terry Tedeschi, the organization’s development director. Many congregations hold food drives for Community Food Share, and also act as distributors of the donated food.

“The faith community participates in a lot of different ways,” she says. “A lot of times churches will do a food drive without us even knowing, and will give us all the food. Whatever a church or synagogue sends in really helps us.”

While much support comes in during the holidays, Tedeschi says that the faith community — which includes Boulder’s mosques, synagogues, churches and temples —

assists them all year long.

“It’s a part of their mission [to serve others]. Every congregation does what it can based on its size,” she says. “It’s the support of the faith communities all year long that sustains us.”

The holidays are an opportunity for many religious organizations to hold special functions to help those who are in need. First Presbyterian Church has more than a dozen outreaches to collect food, toys, gifts, supplies, clothes and outdoor gear. One of the ministries called “Angel Tree” will give gifts to families of prisoners, and another service will be a Thanksgiving dinner that will

be served to more than 350 guests, including some who are homeless.

“I think these holidays are such special times that people have fond memories from their past and an anticipation of great family times together coming up,” says Russ Teets, the director of local outreach and evangelism at the church. “[They] want to do something that will help those in need to have a better holiday.”

“The whole thing is to show the love of Christ,” Teets says. “We’re just trying to do what he tells us to do.”

The faith community largely supports the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless, especially during the holidays, says Greg Harms, the shelter’s executive director. Boulder’s congregations have been involved with the shelter since its start, he says. Many times people from congregations will work in the kitchen and will serve breakfast or dinner.

“The shelter relies on the faith community for financial contributions, and it’s a big source for volunteers,” he says.

“It’s very typical for a church or synagogue to take a night and serve a dinner that night.”

The holidays are always a time when people want to volunteer, Harms says. However, the shelter finds it challenging to find volunteers in January or February when the need is still great.

Yet congregations from multiple faiths keep up their efforts throughout the year.

“Generally the larger congregations are involved, but that’s not always the case,” he says. “It depends on how much serving is a penance. For some congregations, service is more important.”

The synagogue Har HaShem gives more during the holidays, says Rabbi Joshua Rose. The congregation holds a Thanksgiving food drive, for instance. Rose explains that within the Jewish tradition, there is significant concern for justice and compassion.

“The Torah and the prophets are quite explicit about giving to those in need. It’s a central part in Jewish teaching,” he says. “This is a time when we step up our giving.”

Like many other congregations in Boulder, Congregation Har HaShem serves people year-round. The synagogue, which includes more than 450 families, is a warming center for the Boulder Weekly

homeless and collects food and toiletries all year. They also hold a regular food drive, which provides 1,000 meals to hungry families.

“Yes we do more on the holidays,” he says. “[But] the work is ongoing throughout the year.”

Eric Holloway has experienced the help of Boulder’s congregations firsthand. When he was homeless for five years, he noticed an increase of giving around Thanksgiving and Christmas from different religious organizations.

He thinks that people involved with congregations give more during the season to know that they did something right during the holidays.

“I feel that it has to do more with the personal idea of helping others and gaining a gratification of oneself during this particular season,” he says.

season because they get into a mindset that makes them feel inclined to increase charitable activities and make donations, says Leaf Van Boven, a professor in the University of Colorado’s psychology and neuroscience department. He explains that people can easily get caught up in something that happens to be salient in the moment, such

as giving to a charity during the holidays. He says this is the reason that many charities ramp up their efforts to reach donors during the season.

“The reason people give more during the holidays is it invites self-reflection, and it invokes generosity,” he says.

“So there’s an expectation that around the holiday season people should behave more generously, and also it’s a time when people reflect on their values. For many people, gratitude and generosity are values that they care about.”

The St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Center holds a weeklong Thanksgiving food drive that brings in enough food to last its recipients the entire academic year due to the extremely large response, says Patty Quinn, director of religious education.

“People who aren’t normally involved with the food bank will participate that week,” she says.

The food from the drive goes into their food bank, which distributes one grocery bag of food per month to those who need it and gives them the option of returning to the food bank for two food items a day. The intention is that no one will go hungry from day to day, she says.

Quinn says there are many more programs to choose from during the holidays as well. Congregation members give strollers to mothers, toys to children and items such as clothing and bikes to those who need them.

“In our culture, it’s seen as a time of giving,” Quinn says. “Everyone feels better when they share.

“But for Christians, Christmas giving comes from a deeper place — it’s more about sharing our joy that comes from our faith in Christ. Christians want to spread that cheer and give to others in need so that they will have a joyful Christmas as well. We believe

that God’s gift of his son is such a wonderful gift, and one way for us to express our gratitude is to share with others.”

The need for help has increased in the past couple of years, but an October Red Cross study found that most people are planning to donate as much as or more than they did last holiday season. People especially will give when the need is food, because no one wants to see anyone go hungry, Quinn says.

“I know some folks who are struggling, and they still give what they can to our food bank, although the amount is more carefully thought out,” she says.

The organization Boulder Outreach for Homeless Overflow (BOHO), which provides a place for homeless people to stay when the shelters run out of room or when nights are wet or very cold, also has a lot of help from the faith community. BOHO has seen a dramatic increase this year in the number of people who need a place to stay at night, says Anne Doyle, chair of the organization’s board of directors.

However, many local congregations have offered their services to help.

“The faith community has really stepped up in terms of providing service,” she says.

Twelve congregations work in partnership with BOHO, and many give money and supplies to the organization.

BOHO gives all of its money to its staff, which consists of people who either are or have been homeless, and is in constant need of funds and volunteers.

Last year, congregations organized a Christmas service for those who slept at a shelter on Christmas Eve, she says.

She suspects that there will be more involvement from congregations, and that people will do special things this year. The warming center on Christmas Eve will be at the Seventh Day Baptist Church, where a Christmas dinner will be served, and guests will be invited to also attend their service, Doyle says.

“The faith community is very responsive, and wants to find ways to help,” she says.

“People are getting saturated, so when you have your 20th car and your 40th refrigerator, you start to think maybe I should spend a little more on education and health care,” Shuman says.

Gift certificates for services at locally owned businesses put money in the hands of people who will multiply the

effects of those revenues throughout the community by using local business services, including lawyers and accountants, advertising locally, keeping their high-level management staff local, and spending their profits in the local community.

Spend $10 at Starbucks, and about 14 percent of that stays in the community in the form of payroll, according to Richard Fleming, board president for Boulder Independent Business Alliance, which is running a Buy Local campaign.

Last year, Coloradans spent $12 billion during the holidays, according to the Mile High Business Alliance.

“If we shifted 10 percent of our spending we would increase the Colorado economy by about as much as $3 billion, which is huge,” Fleming says. “All that means is people take at least 10 percent of their spending with a corporate franchise and spend it at a local business.”

That boost would lead to more employment and a stronger middle class, he says.

“This is kind of an important, overlooked area of economic stimulus, and it’s unfortunate that we have not focused more attention on buying local as a way of building our economies and increasing the number of jobs available,” Shuman says.

On

any given night in Boulder, you can find DJ sets and the sounds of electronica leaking out the doors of bars around town. For musicians in their early 20s, the peer pressure and demand to go digital is enormous, and that’s exactly why the persistent militia of kids who stick by their instruments seem all the more heroic.

The most recent and exciting success story on this front is Technicolor Tone Factory, a quintet of Boulderites who are now emerging as a powerful reminder that the synergy of musicians is something a single performer can never replace, the direct channeling of energy that results from intuitive communication and a practiced set.

“The whole idea of a band is to be way tight,” says bassist Zach Jackson. “Like you’re all breathing the same breath.”

“We’re never going to be electronic,” says drummer Brian LeFever. “But we can try.”

Electronic influences shine through in the band’s versions of Daft Punk’s “Something About Us” and Pretty Lights’ “Finally Moving.”

“We try to show people that you can accomplish that kind of music and that kind of sound; you can do that with a band as well,” says guitarist Jarrod Guaderrama.

TTF’s infancy is all about exploring. “Funky Grass” builds a fast-paced bluegrass jam and the classic bass line into surprising funk; “Riffaround” mixes light, jazzy blues into dark heavy metal; “DNA” changes from an ambient ballad into a dancey, upbeat reggae groove.

“When we first started, Brian was really adamant that we focused on nailing one specific genre,” Guaderrama says. “But Technicolor has turned into something more where we try to encompass all the ideas of music, all the concepts.

Not only blend it together but take people on an emotional roller coaster, where you transition smoothly between the genres. You try to make the music breathe so it can build up to another concept.”

For a band that only has one released studio track and a meager handful of homemade videos for promotion, they have connected with a Boulder audience.

Whether it was their first gig opening for GODLAZER at the Sushi Spot in April (“They packed the Sushi Spot harder than I’ve ever seen it packed. It was wall-to-wall,” says GODLAZER’s Chris Caligaris), or their Fox Theatre debut opening for The Magic Beans that had the audience buzzing, they have demonstrated they have the synergy to impact a crowd and make them groove.

“The expectation of the band has to be relatively high in order to bring the people,” Guaderrama says, “so that’s what we try to give out and I guess that’s why we’ve had such great interactions with people like The Magic Beans, Eminence Ensemble, In Due Time, West Water Outlaws. They’re constantly trying to step up the level and we are, too. With the few bands that are in Boulder, we’re all trying to book it as much as we can.”

With their upcoming show with Hot Soup cancelled as a result of venue issues, they are backed off from their three-nights-a-week schedule to reassess their buzz level, lay low and charge up for a big winter push. They will collaborate once again with West Water Outlaws for a Dec. 2 show at Cervantes, and after finalizing their first EP in January the band will embark on an “I-25 Tour” with shows in Colorado Springs, Albuquerque, El Paso, and Las Cruces.

“Recording this three-song release is gonna be huge for us,” LeFever says.

“We have some recordings from the Fox and a few from Zach’s house, but we need to have some documented music, which is why January is huge for us.”

“It’s mostly for our fans,” LeFever adds. “They’ve been dying for recordings for a long time, and we didn’t really have the resources or cash flow to do that.”

“The whole point of recording in a studio like that is to capture the live feel,” Jackson says. “It’s not like single-tracking everything, it’s recording in one room all together, really nailing it on how we sound live and trying to get that energy into a recording.”

Watching opera in movie theaters is becoming popular in Boulder

peratic characters are larger than life.

Especially when projected on a 20-foottall movie screen.

And today, thanks to the development of digital sound and high-definition video, more and more people experience opera on the big screen.

Until recently, performances broadcast from the stage offered neither the sound nor the picture quality to attract an audience. But that changed in 2006, when the latest digital technology enabled the Metropolitan Opera in New York to transmit its “Live in HD” broadcasts direct to movie theaters.

A quantum leap beyond the Met’s longstanding radio and television broadcasts, the HD broadcasts give large audiences access to high-quality presentations of great opera. Each year, more than three times as many people see these presentations as attend the Met. The pictures are sharp and clear, and the sound — depending upon the theater — ranges from good to excellent.

Today, the Met distributes its broadcasts to 1,600 theaters in 54 countries — including Boulder’s Century complex and 22 other theaters in Colorado. (A complete list of theaters can be found at bit.ly/HDopera.)

Since the success of the Met broadcasts, other opera companies are offering their productions in HD. In Boulder, the Boedecker Theater at the Dairy Center for the Arts presents performances from major opera houses worldwide, including the Royal Opera in London, La Scala in Milan and the Liceu in Barcelona.

These broadcasts give local audiences access to some of the greatest singers and operatic performances the world offers. Recently I saw two terrific productions within five days: a brilliant Tosca from the Royal Opera that was as good as any opera I have ever seen, shown at

the Boedecker; and a Don Giovanni from the Met that was almost its equal, shown at the Century.

Both productions featured singers with glorious voices and great acting skills. (Note to doubters: Opera today is not about performers standing in one place belting out tunes. Today’s opera singers are much more mobile and know how to act.)

Tosca was particularly outstanding — the cast of Angela Gheorghiu, Jonas Kaufman and Bryn Terfel could not be bettered — but both productions were wonderful.

With their carefully planned close-ups of the actors, the broadcasts give an excellent view of the subtleties of characterization and the interactions among the singers.

This is clearly one of the advantages of seeing opera in a movie theater.

text line by line deeply enriches the experience and helps viewers — especially those new to opera — follow the drama.

And it’s fun to see performances from London, Milan, Barcelona and other opera houses.

Charles Ralph, who manages Opera Pronto, an online calendar of opera in Colorado (www.operapronto.info), made the trip from Ft. Collins to see Tosca. A dedicated opera lover, he says it’s definitely worth the drive for an exceptional production, or “to see operas not likely to be performed in my lifetime in a place I can get to.”

On the other hand, Soprano Renée Fleming, host of the Met broadcast of Don Giovanni, pointed out one disadvantage of the broadcasts: “Nothing compares to the sound of a world-class singer in person,” she said.

Boulder, who has seen performances at the Santa Fe Opera, Opera Colorado and Central City Opera, agrees: Opera at the movies “doesn’t quite match live opera,” he says.

Chelsey Flaherty on the daunting self-doubt in creative process

W

hen a new minister makes a statement moralizing about the evils of homosexuality, what’s the first thing people say? If your friends are as cynical as mine: He’s gotta be gay.

That kind of jaded cynicism — expecting a public persona to be the exact opposite of someone’s personal life — is tiresome and simplistic, of course. But it’s pretty much spot-on in the case of Chelsey Flaherty.

It’s not that the Gunbarrel singer-songwriter is moralizing about anything. For Flaherty, the discrepancy is between her bold vocals, which display raw, frightening power, and the private fears and self-doubts she confesses to feeling about her ability. Her voice projects strength and intensity, but she constantly battles uncertainty about music, she says.

Flaherty is fond of the label “folk/triptonic/soulspeak,” but adjectives might work better than nouns: haunting, aching, spiritual and even, at times, deeply disturbing. Over folk-blues bass and acoustic guitar, Flaherty unleashes her powerful voice, a voice that soars and croons with raw pain and majesty.

On many tracks, she adds textures from all kinds of instruments, giving most songs the feel of an airy, ethereal soundtrack. Flaherty’s unpredictable song structures and echoing electronic instrumentation bring a healthy dose of Radiohead to a distinctly Boulder-ish folk-acoustic sound.

Guitar sets the foundation in Flaherty’s songs, but she says she simply sees the instrument as a necessity.

“I’m really not a very good guitar player. My focus is vocals,” she says. “I play the instruments because I need them.”

When Flaherty plays The Laughing Goat Nov. 26, she’ll present a stripped-down version of her music — just acoustic guitar and vocals, which should give her compelling voice more room to shine.

But Flaherty says she isn’t always ready to let it shine. She admits there are times self-doubt and fear can dominate her creative process.

“It’s a vulnerable thing,” she says of performing live.

“I’ve been extremely insecure about it, but with time and practice it gets easier to detach.”

Flaherty says insecurity can call into question even her strengths. She acknowledges, for example, the power of her voice — “That was pretty intense. That is really insane,” she says after playing a clip of a new song — yet singing can still be a source of insecurity.

After she describes a friend’s opera talent, she says, “I cannot even touch that. It’s completely intimidating where that power comes from.”

“It’s amazing how we glorify others as a way of not doing it ourselves,” she says. But self-criticism is a constant issue in the back of her mind.

“I just wanna be so amazing and I know I’m not,” she says. It’s not that Flaherty isn’t proud of her work — she’s just finished creating a new website, www.anticlimax.com, that collects her poetry and music in one place. Flaherty says that’s a sign of pride and confidence, but having pride in one’s work doesn’t mean never questioning whether it’s any good.

ince Herman was in a van last week, somewhere in Northern California, on his way to a gig with Great American Taxi at John Lee Hooker’s Boom Boom Room in San Francisco. The gig was near the tail end of a stretch of late-year gigs Taxi had peeled off in support of Paradise Lost, the rumble-seat Americana outfit’s third CD in seven years.

Ever mindful of cheesy metaphors, we noted that Taxi had seemed to gain a lot of traction on the heels of last year’s Reckless Habits¸ tour offers and generous radio spins, and we were surprised to see a follow-up so soon, especially given the ZIP code-blurring tour schedule these guys have kept up the last 18 months or so.

Herman and company take Leftover Salmon out of the fridge, record new material

“The voices are there: ‘Is this good enough?’” she says.

A sense of self-doubt can extend to Flaherty’s performances, she says, especially when she’s covering other artists. She says during a recent live cover of Tool’s “Right in Two” — a nine-minute, intricate song in 11/8 — she began to doubt if she could pull it off.

“The whole time I was thinking, ‘Who do you think you are, playing this?’” Flaherty says.

She says she often asks herself, “Am I being sincere?” But she says she’s made strides in defining herself as an artist.

That includes letting her guitar work take the spotlight sometimes, as in an extended song she plans that includes a 20-minute guitar-centered section. Even rehearsing the song lets doubts creep in, Flaherty says.

Persistence is required.

“Plowing through [helps], making sure you get through it,” she says. “I have to allow myself to get through it, like, ‘Let it do its thing, allow, allow.’” see Flaherty Page 23

“Yeah,” Herman says, “I never could figure out how bands think that tours begin and end. For us, it’s just been constant. … But yeah, if I had my choice I’d be playing music every night, either on stage or at home.

The only difference is, when you do it on stage, they give ya free beer.”

But the fact is, some tours don’t so much end as morph, and much of next year will find Herman fronting his other band, Leftover Salmon. Boulder’s most famous fish had been in a kind of amped-up reunion mode until last year, staging around eight to 10 shows annually. Not really a full-time franchise, not really see SALMON Page 23

The doubts don’t show in the power and intensity of Flaherty’s vocals, or the unique directions her music takes, defying categories as it draws from soul, folk and blues. But others sometimes give her well-meaning advice, which doesn’t always help.

She’s practiced tuning out criticism, but it isn’t always easy.

“I still have moments of defensiveness,” she says. “When you tell me I should sound like someone else, you’re not giving me credit for what I’m doing.”

Most of the music, recorded in her Gunbarrel basement, draws its inspiration from Flaherty’s dreams and poetry. In her recordings, Flaherty says she doesn’t aim for hollow happiness — “It’s not always friendly or really comforting or happy, but it’s emotion” — but live she hopes the audience doesn’t leave frowning.

“Live I want a sense of closure and inspiration,” she says. “When I first started recording, my family was like, ‘Dude, this is dark. You have issues.’ I’m not necessarily making this music to please people, but I want them to like it.”

Lots of artists grapple with the same questions as Flaherty about their ability and their confidence. In fact, Flaherty says she expects to worry about her own abilities.

“It’s reassuring to hear that other artists struggle. There’s a lot of demons and [it helps] remembering everyone’s going through that,” she says. “All of it is natural. [It helps me] remembering how natural the shadow of doubt is.

“Sometimes I don’t want to play music at all,” Flaherty adds casually. But she has always overcome those waves of doubt, and she doesn’t seem likely to give in any time soon — in fact, just the opposite.

“I’m really just disappointed in myself,” she says, “for not doing enough.”

Olympic mountain: Colorado’s Beaver Creek Story and photos by Tom Winter

1976, Colorado voters were asked a simple question: “Should the state host the Winter Olympics?” The answer was “no.” The no vote was a shocker. Orchestrated by future governor Dick Lamm, who was a state representative at the time, and fellow rep Bob Jackson, the anti-Olympic movement of the ’70s found sympathetic ears in voters concerned about uncontrolled growth along the Front Range and out of control costs.

For Beaver Creek, the decision to not host the Olympics had profound implications. In 1972, the Olympic Committee had tagged Beaver Creek at the ideal location for the alpine events. There wasn’t a ski area at the mountain, but the potential for a world-class resort was obvious, and Vail Associates (now Vail Resorts) filed for a new ski area permit with the U.S. Forest Service in February of ’72, as Olympic dreams started to dance in their eyes. The no vote hit them like a snowball to the face.

These facts, though, don’t concern us as we step out of the resort’s backcountry access gate and start our hike towards “the bald spot.” The windswept crown above the ski area is a popular destination for skiers, who ski short shots 30 November 24, 2011

back down into a drainage that feeds back into the resort.

The day has been good, very good. A storm cycle has been dropping six to 12 inches per night over the past three days and we’ve come just as the clouds are starting to lift, the high peaks around us dissolving into view as the sun plays hide and seek. Littered with steep terrain accessed by highspeed lifts and devoid of crowds, we’ve tapped into everything that makes this mountain a local’s secret.

Early turns down the rolling front side terrain of Strawberry Park revealed untracked runs with an optimum pitch. The skiing was fast and smooth before we challenged the steeper bump skiing off of Grouse Mountain.

In the afternoon we hit Stone Creek. Lines through pines and aspens with cliffy entrances destroyed prior notions that Beaver Creek doesn’t play host to any extreme skiing. Again, we’re hiking to the top, beyond the ropes for one last powder run, despite the fact that our legs are screaming for one of the Beav’s impeccable groomers to deliver us to après ski.

At the bottom, a few more face shots tallied for the day, we head for the bar, Olympic-sized smiles on our faces. It’s been the perfect day. Plenty of new snow, a bit of sun and hardly any people. The Olympics? Who cares? see BEAVER CREEK Page 31

Chef prioritizes local products

to take a break during the winter, Asbury explains that Heap is the only person he will store products for since he is such a great activist for supporting local farmers. “[Heap] is definitely a staunch advocate for using as much as he can get his hands on,” Asbury says. “He wants to keep utilizing as much stuff as he can.”

In addition to storing ingredients in coolers during the winter, Heap is exploring other options for sustaining his products. SALT has begun pickling food this year, which he says has worked very well. He also eventually wants to learn how to can food for his restaurants. His wife serves as an example, as she canned 200 pounds of peaches this year, he says.

He also has made changes in his own dietary habits to further serve as a model for good, healthy eating.

His restaurants will continue to be successful if he personally follows his own standards, he says. He also wants to be an influence for his family, which includes his 7-year-old twins.

“When I give them a plate of food, I want it to be good for them,” he says.

At home, Heap doesn’t throw food away. Instead he will feed scraps of food to his chickens. It’s a small example, he says, but he hopes to inspire others to rally together and embrace a healthy lifestyle.

“If we can inspire people just a little bit, there is a chance for a ripple effect,” he says.

Heap avoids a corporate business practice, opting instead to pay more money for organic, local food. He also is careful to embrace environmental sustainability, and all three of his businesses recycle or compost everything.

“You can do well in business, and do good for the environment,” he says.

Mostly, the passion for honest food and quality meals seems to be what drives Heap, and he hopes to spread his enthusiasm for wholesome food all year long.

“Our value system needs to shift,” he says. “We need to spend less time on our iPads, and more time canning and pickling and storing food.”

A hipster visit to Boulder’s Snooze

couple months back, I was chatting on the phone with my sister when I mentioned my fear of becoming a hipster.

“Becoming?!” was her incredulous reply. Granted, I hang out with people that drink Pabst Blue Ribbon and wear kilts, ironically, and I even own a few fedoras and have volunteered at the roller derby, but moi, a hipster?

My hipsterphobia made me leery of one of the new additions to Pearl Street, Snooze, a selfdescribed “a.m. eatery” emphasizing breakfast. Hipster acquaintances lauded Snooze’s original Denver locations, and the contrarian made me leery of the Boulder spot. Nevertheless, I felt compelled to see if it was all it was cracked up to be.

It’s a bright and airy space, furnished with yellow seats, orange tabletops and vinyl banquettes. These touches create a retro space-age atmosphere that makes you think that if George Jetson had an Airstream trailer, it might look like this. The only thing missing was an Esquivel! bachelor pad soundtrack. Alas, this comment might be a symptom of incubating hipsterness.

While waiting for friend Zoe to arrive for a midweek brunch, I surveyed the menu, which features a variety of Eggs Benedict interpretations ranging from $8.50 to $11. There’s also a proverbial smorgasbord of $7.50 pancakes, which includes the usual suspects, like blueberry, as well as more unique selections like a sweet potato variation. Boring vampire sex

he fourth film in the Twilight series, Breaking Dawn: Part 1 reveals a flash or two of real filmmaking (mostly in a suggestively grotesque birthing sequence), enough to save it from pure lousiness.

But a significant number of its 117 minutes do seem like hours, and whenever certain actors take the lead and set the pace of the dialogue, time itself begins to crawl backward and the breaking dawn begins to feel like yesterday’s breaking dawn, or last Tuesday’s.

How did this happen?

Quite apart from the source material’s morbidity — the Stephenie Meyer novel, a combined abstinence lecture and anti-abortion allegory, has been broken into two separate features, this year’s and next year’s — how did Bill Condon, the director with the most stylish and idiosyncratic resume of any to undertake a Twilight

on an isle off the Brazilian coast, bammo: Edward’s demon seed starts its journey and eventually starts breaking Bella’s bones from the inside. (Told you: morbid!) Once Bella is fighting for her life back home in Forks, Wash., the controversial pregnancy foments another round of species warfare between the vamps and the wolves.

Twilight, the phenomenon, sells one thing above all else: the idea of sex with serious, immediate and clinically painful consequences. Of the Twilight pictures to date, this one works least well as a standalone product. Condon does strangely little to energize the various heart-to-hearts and the wedding-jitters montage scenes. The oversized wolves, the superfast-motion imagery and other Twilight effects flourishes look as cheesy as ever. Composer Carter Burwell, one of the best in the business, has been dragged down to a level of mediocre wallpaper music one wouldn’t have thought possible.

But don’t listen to me. I enjoyed the first two for what they were, and didn’t much like the third one, which many considered the best. Breaking Dawn: Part 1 sets up Part 2. That should be enough from a business perspective. Those who are committed to this franchise are committed to this franchise.

Singing on the ice

admired much of the original Happy Feet (2006), but five years later, I’m still considering suing its makers for emotional distress.

Certainly the most sadistic aspects of its storyline make it a film one doesn’t easily revisit, either for me or my son.

“Here’s my review,” the Young Him, not quite 5, whispered during the “Shock Corridor” climax of the first film, after Mumble the Emperor Penguin had been captured and confined. “Movie, please be over.”

But director George Miller’s digitally animated quasi-musical had a simple and kinetic idea behind it. What if young Mumble found his mating call not through song, but through tap dancing? That question made up for a lot of knotty stomachs, and was answered by many hundreds of millions of dollars worldwide.

The old gang, the swooping panoramic shots of masses of dancing penguins and the constant, grinding perils return in Miller’s sequel, Happy Feet 2.

Story-wise, though, it’s a mess. Nothing seems to happen naturally or without strain this time. Your children will likely be instilled with a sense of ecologically responsible dread for the full 100 minutes. But if it weren’t for the comic relief provided by Will and Bill, tiny shrimplike crustaceans known as krill and Boulder Weekly

installment, deliver the dullest movie of the bunch?

And is there anything to do about Taylor Lautner?

He’s had four films now to improve, yet he’s still coming off like a reedy-voiced pretender, doing his best, but ... say what you will about Robert Pattinson (fwoopy-haired vampire Edward) or Kristen Stewart (Edward’s squeeze, Bella), but Stewart is up around here, Pattinson a little below that, and Lautner (heartbroken werewolf Jacob) is down there somewhere.

So: Sex with a vampire.

Finally. For three films now, the Twilight narrative has practically goaded the audience into having intercourse on behalf of the characters. (Bella is 18, and in Breaking Dawn she gets pregnant with demon child about 20 minutes after losing her virginity.) The smoldering and the we-can’t-we-shouldn’t sweet nothings have been going on between Bella and Edward, with a side order of Jacob, for what seems like centuries. Honeymooning

voiced by Brad Pitt and Matt Damon, this would be a forbidding return to Antarctica indeed.

The story rests on the old standbys, childhood humiliation and parental crises of confidence.

Mumble (Elijah Wood) and mate Gloria (Alecia Moore, a.k.a. Pink) now have little Erik. After a highly public failed attempt at dancing, Erik realizes he can’t shake it or stomp it like pa. He finds the new role model he seeks in The Mighty Sven, a bird (apparently a penguin, but a close-up of his stapled beak suggests an impostor) able to fly and sporting a Scandi-accent courtesy of Hank Azaria.

Erik’s self-esteem issues would be more than enough for one sequel, but the script has bigger fish to fry. While no one dares utter the phrase “global warming,” let’s just say that something is causing those glaciers to melt.

Species of various types must join forces to save the choreographically gifted Emperor Penguins from their suddenly dire circumstances.

However brutal, the first film’s images of Lovelace the penguin (Robin Williams again) with his neck trapped inside a plastic six-pack ring certainly got some viewers thinking about recycling more mindfully. Director Miller and his writing team were disinclined in Happy Feet 2 to wield the same eco-hammer and pound the same message with the same intensity. But the sequel’s themes of friendship and interdependency fail to generate much momentum. I found myself waiting around for the return of Will and Bill (the krill) and Will’s yearning for a life outside his immediate biomass. Be warned, though: Even in these bits, you must prepare yourself for an ocean of puns on the order of “Goodbye, krill world.”
