Good Lord, shout the corporate bosses, are you nuts? Do you think America is some kind of Norman Rockwell fantasyland? This is the Season of Mass Consumerism, Bucko, so lift your tail-end

Still probing JFK’s death

[Re: “It’s time to open the vault on Kennedy,” Commentary, Nov. 7.] This was a very thought-provoking article.

There is so much we don’t know about the JFK assassination. At the time the government may have thought it was

out of that La-Z-Boy and hit the malls — pronto! And if you happen to have a job in a chain store, don’t even think about taking a holiday, or you won’t have a job the next day. Let us now praise the one God we all serve: Mammon!

Years ago, Macy’s started “Black Friday” as a kickoff to this Holy Month of Frenzied Commercialization. But it produced such a surge of profit that Walmart and other chains converted to the Church of Perpetual Selling. Black Friday used to begin the day after Thanksgiving. Last year, reaching for more, the Elmer Gantrys of Walmart dared to desecrate Thanksgiving itself by opening their doors to the Black Friday masses at 8 p.m. — on Thursday night.

This year — with Macy’s, Target, Toys“R”Us, J.C. Penney, Best Buy, Kohl’s and others also pushing the Friday Shop-A-Rama into Thursday — Walmart will open at 6 p.m., intruding even-deeper into Thanksgiving’s family

dinner hour. And, pushing excess to a new high, Kmart will open at 6 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning. Yes, 6 a.m.! Still, a Walmart executive says, “We thought 6 o’clock [p.m.] was the exact right time to win the weekend.”

Wow — did you ever think of Thanksgiving as something to “win”?

But, then, your spiritual devotion to mammon probably isn’t as ardent as that executive’s. Meanwhile, the same guy reports that the 1 million low-wage workers who’ll have to staff the Thanksgiving profit grab are “really excited to work that day.”

Sure they are. “Excited” as in agitated.

CU’s link to global warming

Would the recent flooding have been as extreme if humans had started doing more to fight global warming 20 years ago? The loudest voice for global warming denial in Colorado the last 20 years has been AM talk station KOA, which proudly announces “850 KOA, home of the Buffs and Rush Limbaugh!” Limbaugh was named global warming denier of the year in 2011 by media watchdog Media Matters. Like CU, many of the largest college sports programs in the country rent their mascots to stations that broadcast Limbaugh and other climate change deniers. All of those stations are used to attack climate scientists, slow efforts to reduce carbon emissions, and ridicule green energy. Aside from the well-documented racism, sexism and government shutdown cheerleading from Limbaugh, local KOA talkers also support defunding and privatizing public education and regularly attack teachers and teacher unions. They also weigh in loudly on elections that effect tuition levels, student loans, CU funding, and who CU regents and chancellors will be.

So, what does KOA pay CU every year to put Ralphie the buffalo on their 8 November 21, 2013

giant anti-science, anti-education soapbox? $5,000? $50,000? When I asked, the only people at CU who knew work for Buffalo Sports Properties, a property of Learfield Sports. They have an office at the CU stadium but keep licensing information confidential.

Whatever the amount, it’s time for CU to honor its own mission statement and find nonpartisan broadcasting alternatives for the Buffs.

A lesson in compromise

I was recently on a tiny plane shuddering through turbulence over vast expanses of Colorado mountains. Why? I was traveling with EcoFlight, a Colorado-based nonprofit, with the goal of examining numerous designations used to protect and manage public lands, from the air and the ground.

Specifically, I wanted to learn about efforts to protect natural systems in the Rocky Mountains. What I got was a firsthand experience in compromise.

For example, I witnessed the frustration of citizens who feel alienated by the environmental community and I gained a deeper appreciation for the ecological and human importance of leaving large swaths of wild land undeveloped. I heard from individuals establishing bipartisan community-based land agreements in Colorado, New Mexico and Utah. The popularity of this new age of conservation effort demonstrates that successful initiatives incorporate diverse voices. The Hermosa Creek Watershed Protection Act near Durango has gained the approval of both the Colorado see LETTERS Page 11

dodge’s bullets Grappling with preserving the past, for the future

I

had to write about a subject that is near and dear to my heart again, and I never quite know how to handle it.

It is the now-defunct faculty/ staff newspaper for the University of Colorado, Silver & Gold Record, where I worked for 12 years.

When we heard that CU physics professor Steven Pollock was going to receive the prestigious U.S. Professor of the Year award from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, I knew it was a big deal. I remembered when none other than Nobel Prize winner and former CU physics professor Carl Wieman won the same award years ago. I also remembered Pollock’s name, for some reason.

So in an effort to find a different angle than the daily newspaper chain would have when the news broke on Nov. 14, I did what I often do when there is CU news that rings a faint bell. I went to the old Silver & Gold Record archive. On the day I looked up his name on the search engine, the top two hits were stories that I had written in 2001 regarding a controversy surrounding him being granted tenure. Here was my angle! Pollock, who would now be the Big Man on Campus due to this national award that had only ever been given to one other faculty member in the state, was nearly denied tenure!

Even though I’d be quoting from my own stories in the process, I thought I was on solid ground, as long as we disclosed in an editor’s note that I was the one who had written the original articles while with the S&GR. And when I interviewed Pollock that day, he mentioned in passing that his promotion to full professor in 2009 had been initially denied by the dean, until his department explained that his work on how to best teach physics — the very work for which he just received this prestigious award — constituted legitimate published research.

Things got stickier the next day, Nov. 12, when I went to search for those two stories on the S&GR archive again. They were gone. Curious, to say the least. Why would two articles, related to controversy surrounding a CU professor who was about to receive a huge national award, suddenly disappear from search results?

Maybe I’m just a cynic, a skeptic, a conBoulder Weekly

spiracy theorist. Could it be that CU officials didn’t want people — especially reporters doing research on the award winner — to see that he had such an uphill battle gaining promotion and tenure, considering the superstar that he turned out to be?

I told my editor that I might have a conflict of interest. Not only were they my stories, but I had taken great pride in building the S&GR online archive over the years, and when the CU administration closed us down, allegedly in the name of budget cuts, we were promised that the online archive would stay intact, serving as a permanent record of the nearly 40 years we had documented.

In the end, I wrote the story of the mysteriously disappearing articles as well, reluctantly, with an editor’s note that I had authored the missing stories, to disclose my relationship to the work and be transparent with our readers about any bias I might have. It was pointed out to me that I had no financial interest in seeing the articles survive the test of time, but I still had an emotional twang when it came to the possibility of having our archive purged, even in the slightest way, in the name of public relations. (I soon found the stories in another manner, by scrolling down the list of editions and finding the right date.)

Naturally, the PR folks denied any knowledge of missing articles, and the web developer who has sole access to the S&GR site insisted that he hadn’t taken down any stories in at least two months.

The only time he had removed an article, he said, was when the subject of allegations outlined in an S&GR account had threatened to sue the university. This, of course, piqued my interest — an admission that the archive, which is supposed to serve as a permanent record of the university’s past, had been selectively edited.

NEW OIL AND GAS REGS MEAN NOTHING IF INDUSTRY MONITORS ITSELF State health officials, with the blessing of Gov. John Hickenlooper and the heads of the state’s three largest oil and gas producers — Noble Energy, Encana and Anadarko — have proposed a new set of rules to govern air pollution caused by the industry.

We don’t mean to sound cynical, but we will definitely have to know more before we jump on the governor’s bandwagon on this one.

After all, this is the same guy who lied to Congress about drinking fracking fluid knowing that what he actually drank was not the same stuff that he was encouraging oil and gas polluters to dump underground in Colorado.

Old “Oil Can” Hick claims that the new rules that he and the oil and gas companies are now touting as a good and fair set of regulations (that in and of itself should scare the crap out of you) will cause the industry to capture 95 percent of the contamination that they now spew into our air. Sounds good, but what the hell does it really mean?

Before you can capture 95 percent of the air contamination, you’d have to know exactly how much contamination is being emitted from each well, production platform, pipeline and compressor station. But as you may recall, Hickenlooper fought to defeat a bill that would have created enough inspectors to tell us what the baseline contamination really is. So how will we know if oil and gas companies are really in compliance with the new regulations? You guessed it.

Hick’s industry pals are going to be in charge of telling us what is being emitted and then confirming that they are capturing the required amount. In other words, the new regs are likely going to be just another layer of meaningless selfreporting that the industry ignores, knowing that there’s not enough manpower to catch them cheating and miniscule fines even if they were to get caught by some miracle.

Until we see a mechanism created that would allow for accurate and strong enforcement of these new regs, we will consider them to be just the latest PR campaign designed by the industry and its puppet governor to convince the public that oil and gas is something other than what it is: one of the dirtiest industries in the world. If you want real regs that work, then keep passing them and enforcing them at the local level.

ICEBOX INSIGHT Funny email of the week goes to a dating service called Check Their Fridge. Yes, this operation revolves around telling you what kind of person you are going out with based on what’s in his or her refrigerator.

Apparently, after living the single life for more than 20 years, John Stonehill figured out that checking his dates’ fridges revealed great insight into the kind of people they were, from health to lifestyle to income to the kind of romantic partner they’ll be.

Now he calls himself the world’s first RDE, Referigerator Dating Expert.

Readers submit pictures of their dates’ fridges to www.checktheirfridge.com, and Stonehill breaks down what he sees using a “Fridge Dating Scorecard” that gives odds on your chances of sex, marriage and “if your date is a bunny-boiler,” according to his press release.

My suspicion, given the track record we had at the S&GR, is that the story was not inaccurate at the time it was published. Maybe the individual was later exonerated, and that was something we never had the chance to report. Either

way, the print version can’t be obliterated, thankfully. A small victory for paper. In this Google-driven age, when one’s chances of career advancement can be sabotaged by an Internet search that turns up an untoward allegation, the pressure on news agencies to purge their online records has never been more intense, especially in the face of legal action.

For my part, I’d like to think we would be wise enough to not go back to book-burning. As it says on the west face of Norlin Library, “Who knows only his own generation remains always a child.”

Left to their own devices, insurance companies have raised premiums to the breaking point and have diminished benefits to a bare minimum.

Suing insurance companies for benefits promised is commonplace. The genius of Obamacare, even though at the time most of us saw it as a giveaway to the insurance lobby, is only now being appreciated as the open market returns to the insurance business with strong government guidelines to insure that the uninsured, underinsured and the uninsurable must be embraced and never dumped, and the companies must pay at least 80 percent of premiums out in benefits.

This departure from the previous norm is driving big insurance orbital along with their political bedfellows.

I’ll give CU officials the benefit of the doubt, that it was just a technology snafu that removed these particular two articles, out of the thousands on the website, on this particular day.

But I sure hope these glitches don’t become a regular practice. We can’t afford to forget our past. Especially when it comes to teaching the next generation.

In the end, this flight was an eyeopener. As an aspiring mountaineer, I hold steady to the value of protecting public lands, but I also pledge to respect and listen to those who see things differently.

In other words, those who forget the mistakes of their history are bound to repeat them. One role of a university, after all, is to serve as an open marketplace of ideas and a place where one can turn to consult the full body of knowledge we have amassed over the centuries.

news Sequester may shutter CU faculty research, labs

hristopher Lowry is working on several new treatments for depression, even on the possibility of vaccinating against it.

These treatments could improve the lives of millions of people. The only problem is, since the sequester, he can’t find anyone to pay him to finish his research.

“I have been continuously funded since 1995, and brought in millions and millions of dollars. I am not actually planning on having money after June 2014,” says Lowry. “Whatever I was doing before isn’t good enough anymore.”

Lowry, a scientist in the department of integrative physiology at the University of Colorado Boulder, is not the only scientist who has not been able to get new grants.

“Scientists around the country are bracing for a dark age,” Lowry says. “You hear about a lot of labs closing or thinking about closing.”

According to the university, Boulder’s faculty attracted 7.6 percent fewer grant dollars this fiscal year than in the previous one. That means there was a budget decrease of about $29 million.

The federal sequestration cuts that went into effect on March 1 cut the budgets of two major arms of the federal government that provide research grants: the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. According to the National Institutes of Health, the NIH is issuing approximately 700 fewer grants in 2013 than it did in 2012, and slashing 5 percent, or $1.5 billion, off of this fiscal year’s budget. According to Lowry, this puts the NIH grant acceptance rate at the lowest in history. The National Science Foundation has had its budget reduced by 5 percent and is issuing approximately 1,000 fewer grants in 2013.

Patricia Rankin, associate vice chancellor for research at CU, cautioned that “one of the things that makes this a bit complicated is that CU’s fiscal year is offset from the government’s by three months.

There’s a possibility that some money will come in later than usual,” Rankin says. “We’re hearing anecdotally that we are down less than other universities.

Some of them are down more like 10 percent. We’re doing not as badly as you might have feared, given the size of the actual sequester cut.”

“The perfect storm,” Lowry says. “That’s what I would call it.”

He says that under former President George W. Bush, and in 2008 under President Barack Obama as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, federal funding for science expanded dramatically.

he divine art of sculpting mud pies could be one of many ways children learn about the envi-

ronment, and profoundly impacts their development and identity as an environmental steward for the rest of their lives.

Four years after the Boulder Valley School District set a goal to make all graduates environmentally literate, an ongoing partnership between schools and local environmental nonprofits like Thorne Nature Experience and Wild Bear Mountain Ecology Center has led to yearly attendance of 5,000 students at Thorne Nature Experience and 20,000 contact hours at Wild Bear Mountain Ecology Center. The partnership highlights a trend in education of having experts with better funding and facilities than public schools help teach environmental literacy to K-12 students. However, both environmental education nonprofits and the Boulder County School District are still looking for meaningful ways to measure environmental literacy, under classroom time and budget constraints that don’t always allow for students to be outdoors.

“Environmental education just doesn’t teach kids about the environment but leads to them being healthier and better learners, so getting kids into the outdoors has a dramatic impact on things other than just getting them into nature,” says Keith Desrosiers, Thorne Nature Experience director. “It’s not just

been turned down to lead environmental education field trips in Nederland on several occasions.

“It’s just that classrooms are really pigeon-holed into a specific amount of time,” Dreves says. “We had a situation where we had funding and great things to offer, and we’ve had the schools say, in general, we don’t have time for a five-minute walk from the high school to do river testing. And that’s shocking to me. Like wow, the resources are here, the funding is here, the tools are here, but the opportunity? No we can’t do that because we don’t have time.”

Because not all classrooms have the time or financial means for environmental education outside the classroom, Derosiers describes an educational model that includes “not just teacher lesson plans, but someone who can teach teachers how to build environmental education into a lesson plan. To actually pay an educator to be in a school full-time, to teach teachers how to incorporate environmental education into social science standards, into English literacy and into math standards.”

One of the biggest challenges, for both school districts and nonprofit environmental education organizations, is measuring their success. Current strategies like standardized testing are often cited as one of the reasons teach-

ers struggle to include comprehensive environmental literacy in the classroom.

“Testing and test cores are skillbased and focused, and I think that science literacy, environmental science literacy, particularly, got lost on that,” Dreves says of Wild Bear. “It used to be where they would have a more holistic perspective on learning, where if somebody was teaching a unit on insects, they would integrate everything into it — math, literacy, social studies — and it would span across the entire day. In my opinion, that’s a very thought-provoking, higher-level thinking style in terms of learning.”

For the Boulder Valley School District, measuring success for environmental literacy can be built into tests and curriculum, but for groups like Wild Bear, which don’t test its participants, it’s harder to quantify. And private funders as well as grant providers want to see results. Wild Bear and Thorn Nature Experience both look at the number of participants as well as return rates, but Dreves says her impact reaches further than that.

“We’re not just teaching a skill — it’s hard to measure identity development,” she says. “How do you measure if somebody felt a certain way, or changed their behavior?”

reenland is a theater for the adventurous, a place where snowcapped, granite mountains rise from the ocean and reach for an impossibly blue sky.

Greenland rock is some of the oldest on planet Earth, estimated at 3.8 billion years old. It is solid, beautifully sculpted and virtually untouched. For Lizzy Scully, the opportunity to climb in this remote and primitive place represented the culmination of 20 years of technical rock climbing.

Originally from Virginia, Scully, 40, began climbing in her early 20s and quickly developed an impressive résumé. Within a few years of taking up the sport, she had scaled big walls in Yosemite and ticked off classic routes in Utah like Finger of Fate in the Fischer Towers and Spaceshot in Zion National Park. A relationship that blossomed at Yosemite led her to move to Colorado with her partner in her mid-20s. He eventually left, but Colorado stuck for Scully. The worldclass climbing in Rocky Mountain National Park satisfied her vertical desires and her career as a professional writer and multimedia developer took off.

Scully eventually settled in Lyons, a place where she could get her outdoor fix and be part of a tight-knit community. Here, her cheerful and determined personality would flourish.

When “Team Glitterbomb” set off in early July to western Greenland, Scully was joined by climbers Quinn Brett, 32, Prairie Ciel Larronde Kearney, 30, and photographer John Lizzy Scully Dickey, 38. With perfect weather and ideal rock conditions, the ambitious climbers put up three impressive first ascents in two weeks of climbing: “Plenty for Everyone” (5.10+/11-, 1,800 feet) on The Barnes Wall; “Morning Luxury” (5.11a/b, 1,400 feet) on The Breakfast Spire; and “Four Quickies” (5.10, 500 feet) on The Submarine Wall.

The trip was turning out to be an amazing success.

I tell Prairie soon thereafter, when she gets up for coffee. She says only, “No … This is so unexpected. I will tell her.”

Barely removed from the triumph and tragedy in Greenland, Scully’s hometown of Lyons was demolished in the unexpected “100-Year Flood” that tore through Colorado’s Front Range beginning Sept. 11.

While her own property was safely perched on high ground, the destruction of her community was almost

Late one night, while driving through Utah, artist Chuck Forsman saw a dead cow on the road and stopped to photograph it.

“I think I did it just kind of to wake me up,” Forsman says. Ordinarily, he would have gotten out of the car to take the photo, perhaps to be added to a collection that fed into his meticulously composed paintings, but this time, he photographed it through the windshield.

One of his kids sleeping in the backseat crawled up to the front, and the two of them spent the rest of the drive watching the horizon, speculating about lights in the distance.

The notable, regrettable exception from the body of work, he concedes, is that there are very few photos taken from urban settings.

“I found it was really unsafe to be doing this in the city and I see that as a real liability of this project,” he says.

“There’s one in Denver actually right downtown and it was an anxious moment when I took it, so there’s an example of something I couldn’t safely do, and I missed out on very much a big part of our lives and I regret that, but I might not be here if I had tried.”

Forsman was clear on the aesthetic: The frame, or an element of the car, appears in every shot — a 40mm lens for his lightweight Pentax LX was a key to the project, fast and sharp enough to shoot the material but wide enough to take in portions of the car frame, windshield wipers or rearview mirrors as well.

It is, after all, the perspective from which we see most of the world.

“I thought, wow, I’m always getting out of the car to take, you know, serious pictures, but that’s not the way we see the outside world,” Forsman says. “It just hit me that we see most of the outside world through our car windows.”

His first thought was of the problems posed by the task of shooting out of a car window, like the reflections on the windows and the parts of the frame of the car that would get in the way of the shot. In the end, though, those liabilities became assets to the project, incorporated into an aesthetic that develops a deeply personal feel. It’s a technique he says he borrows from Dutch painter Jan Vermeer — a forced intimacy, a sense of voyeurism, of looking in on something so personal you were never meant to be able to see it.

“Early on, hitchhiking back East, I went into the National Gallery and I remember looking at the Vermeers and they just seemed like miracles to me, I kept leaving to go see more and I kept going back and back,” Forsman says. “Part of what I decided was special, besides the amazing skill and the beauty, was the intimacy of the pictures. Part of that intimacy came from the fact that, picture after picture, you would be behind something, the picture would be framed by a wall or a chair, there was something between you and the scene and sometimes you felt almost like a voyeur, like you’re looking in on something, like you’re peeking past a doorframe at these intimate scenes, but that kind of frame that moved the scene away from you, that gave you a first-person experience, it placed you there. … That was one of the things I thought of when I started Western Rider and it became terribly important to that picture that I utilize that frame in such a way you became aware of distinction between the intimate place where you were and that big see FORSMAN Page 30

“None of this is resolved until the last movement,” Katsarellis says. “So much happens and we don’t come home until the end, the coda of the last movement, and it’s a very special homecoming. In the end when all is resolved, it’s deeply rewarding.

“It’s Ithaca,” she says, referring to Odysseus’ homecoming in Homer’s Odyssey.

Katsarellis spends a lot of time studying the architecture of the pieces she conducts. “Crafting of the architecture is the primary job of the conductor,” she says. “I will be sculpting from the very beginning, keeping in mind the very end. This demands a very high level of musicianship, but it also is magnificently rewarding, because I’m the sort of kid who liked to play with Erector Sets and Lincoln Logs.”

“One can also make an argument for Daugherty’s “Strut” having an epic quality,” she continues. “It was inspired by Paul Robeson, the African-American singer, actor, civil rights activist, who had kind of an epic, if controversial, life.

“Michael Daugherty has totally embraced popular culture — his ‘Metropolis Symphony’ is based on the Superman comic strip! ‘Strut’ is an early work, from 1989. It’s a very, very robust piece with all sorts of really fun stuff that is a great season opener.”

Rodrigo’s “Concierto de Aranjuez” contrasts in just about every way with Beethoven’s rhythmic drive and Daugherty’s American pop-based style.

It’s a delicate, cheerful piece written for the soft-spoken classical guitar, with lots of swaying Spanish rhythms and folk inflections.

“It’s just a beautiful, beautiful piece,” Katsarellis says. “Nicolò Spera will do a beautiful job on it. The trickiest part is the last movement. It sounds like a folk song, but the downbeats all come in the wrong place. That gives it a fun quality.”

Sure it’s fun, but will it be epic?

Katsarellis laughs. “Our concerts are always epic!”

I

f you can’t help but sing the title of this review (in your head, at least) to the melody of the opening theme to The Mary Tyler Moore Show, you probably know who Molly Ivins was. If you’re asking yourself what The Mary Tyler Moore Show is, you’re likely too young for discoteques, parachute pants or Molly Ivins to have much meaning for you. With the first two, you’re not missing out on a whole lot. With the last, you’re being criminally culturally deprived.

Mary Tyler “Molly” Ivins was a legendary American journalist far too few have heard of.

Though she garnered her fair share of notoriety and praise over the course of her long and productive career, her populist, anti-government message was so cogently thought out and entertainingly presented that it deserves wider acknowledgment. Hell, it should be taught in civics classes in high schools across the land.

Red Hot Patriot — The Kick-Ass Wit of Molly Ivins, written by sisters Margaret and Allison Engel, honors Molly’s life and does a bang-up job of keeping her insouciant, incisive observations about the American political system and the foibles of life in general alive and interesting. This essentially onewoman show gives us Molly in all her drinkin’, smokin’, cursin’, rootin’, tootin’ outlaw brilliance, and it is not to be missed.

This Pulitzer Prize-nominated and widely praised bio-play excels on two very important levels. First and foremost, it is a roadhouse full of good times. The laughs, mostly thanks to the satirical genius of Molly’s own words, come one after another in a steady flow from beginning to end. Second, it extends Molly’s legacy of challenging the status quo and exhorting the governed to hold their leaders accountable.

You feel as though you are hearing and seeing Molly herself in all her firebrand glory. In Red Hot Patriot, Brown is the definition of awardworthy.

Director Brian Freeland, along with Lighting Designer Jacob Welch and Scenic Designer David Lafont, use an array of white sheets above the stage to project images throughout the play. When Molly reminisces about family members, mentors and nemeses, their images appear to float above her. The LIDA Project is known for its avant-garde, experimental theater offerings, and its efforts have yielded both great triumphs and misses by miles over Republican, has been hornswoggled. n March 1975, Boulder County Clerk & Recorder Clela Rorex granted the first same-sex marriage license in the United States.

“We’ve had amazing moments in Boulder, huge defeats, and incredible mobilization of LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender] people and their allies,” says Boulder historian Glenda Russell.

For Russell, this is exactly why a politically active town like Boulder needs its own Pridefest, the 10th annual installment of which Out Boulder, a nonprofit LGBT advocacy group, is hosting this weekend.

“When we are not under siege, we have time and the possibility of looking at day-to-day attitudes,” Russell says.

Pridefest is thus a useful tool for bringing together members of a community that may feel distant from one another, according to Russell.

“It’s really important for LGBT people to see other

LGBT people gathered, to see queer culture in various forms of music, activities, the proliferation of rainbow objects,” she says. “It’s important for young LGBT people to see there are places in Boulder where people come together.”

There is a heavy youth component to the festival as well.

“The after-party is an 18-plus event that the younger crowd can engage with and enjoy,” says Pridefest coordinator and Out Boulder Events Manager Aubree Peckham.

At Pridefest, Peckham continues, “we’ll see what our community looks like, together. This is the one time a year where we can really come together and celebrate, make sure everyone’s visible and appreciated by one another.”

“Not everyone wants to go down and have the giant, half-naked parade and the drunkenness. Our [Pridefest] is a little more peachy [compared to other cities’ festivals], and I think the community appreciates that — it’s where everyone feels most comfortable,” Peckham says.

Pridefest has existed as a block party, a Pearl Street event, a community-wide festival in Central Park, and now it will have its first run at the Boulder Theater, after being delayed and reorganized following the September flood.

This year’s Pridefest includes musical performances, including Denver group The Tah Tahs, drag and burlesque performers, aerial dancers, a comedian and more. The event kicks off with a happy hour on Thursday, Nov. 21, at Proto’s Pizza in Boulder, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The main event takes place on Saturday, Nov. 23, from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Boulder Theater, and is free and open to the public.

Out Boulder will also host an After Party beginning at 9 p.m. at the Boulder Theater, with tickets on sale now through Out Boulder, or available online (ticket sales will go in part to recouping the investments of Out Boulder in the Pridefest scheduled for earlier this year that was postponed due to the flooding).

draw in that there is something going on for everyone, an appeal to the entire community.

“We have an intergenerational event,” she says. “Families with kids, single people, couples ... people come from the Springs, Fort Collins, Pueblo, all over the state.”

Russell invites the diverse LGBT community and their allies to visit her at Pridefest this weekend, where she’ll be at a booth depicting a timeline of LGBT history in Boulder County.

“See where you fit in it,” Russell says. “There is room for everyone.”

All members of the community are invited and encouraged to, as Peckham says, “take over the entire beautiful theater and let loose, dance and sing along, and just enjoy the entertainment. … It’s a community celebration of everything that we’ve accomplished, promoting visibility, coming together, and celebrating with each other.”

Thirty-eight years after that first same-sex marriage license was granted and overturned, Boulder has still not given up on those ideals. The Colorado Civil Union Act was passed in March 2013, granting civil unions to same-sex couples in the state and thus offering legal rights such as the ability to adopt a partner’s child, or make medical decisions on a partner’s behalf.

“The LGBT community has had its struggles, and it’s important to highlight that this is a community that has much to celebrate,” Russell says.

Almog Behar has navigated the borders of Baghdad, Istanbul, Berlin and Jerusalem literally and culturally as an Arab-Jew. To share his experiences at the University of Colorado Boulder this week, Behar will read selections from his writing about his family history, concealing languages, and crossing borders. On his method of using poetry to connect Jewish and Islamic identities in particular, Behar simply says, “I guess that literature is always the first one to cross those borders, or maybe literature just lives between them.”

Seven different members, most of whom write music in addition to performing, make up local band Zen Mustache. This group’s collection of original tunes, as a result, comes in a wide range of styles and tastes, with something by and for everyone.

“We end up falling into a vibe somewhere between rock ’n’ roll and bluegrass,” band member Johnny Drozdek says of the final mix.

Performing at The Laughing Goat this weekend, Drozdek isn’t afraid of fitting all those seven members into a more intimate venue, saying that the band will unplug just about everything except for the electric guitar. ‘12 Years a Slave’ is an epic lesson

ew rule: You can watch Django Unchained as many times as you want, but you have to watch 12 Years a Slave at least once first.

What Quentin Tarantino sensationalized and spaghetti-Westerned up, writer John Ridley and director Steve McQueen pared down to its barest, most brutal essentials. Slavery, the ghost of American prosperity and invisible shackle that still pins down inner-city bootstraps, has never been shown this honestly on screen. 12 Years a Slave occupies that sparsely inhabited place beyond Oscar statues and Tomatometer scores, in the upper stratosphere of movies that act as time machine and history professor. It is, for want of a better word, important.

Based on the memoir of Solomon Northup, a free man kidnapped and sold as a slave, the film never once slips into exploitation or melodrama, never fetishizes the violence nor veers into overt moralizing. When Solomon (Chiwetel Ejiofor) is kidnapped by Brown (Scoot McNairy) and Hamilton (Taran Killam) while on tour as an accomplished musician, he is sold by the slaver Freeman (Paul Giamatti) to the mostly kind Ford (Benedict Cumberbatch). It’s worth noting that McQueen and company never fall victim to the pitfall of most white-helmed slavery-era films, in that no master is forgiven or shown to be nothing more than a victim of that era’s way of thinking.

After Solomon, given the slave name “Platt,” gets into a dustup with an overseer (Paul Dano), he is sold to the wicked Epps (Michael Fassbender), a master so realistically vile he makes Leonardo DiCaprio’s slave owner in Django Unchained downright cuddly. It Boulder Weekly

is here, on Epps’ cotton farm, that the hellish reality of America’s past leaps from the screen and singes the audience’s hearts and minds. Hope is lost, as we see Solomon finally, horrifyingly become the slave known as Platt. For the empathetic, this is exactly as torturous and painful as it should be.

For as ugly as the content is, McQueen’s film is quite beautiful.

Everything is so deliberate, from the long, slow reaction shots of Ejiofor’s watery eyes to the sound of his bare feet struggling in the mud to keep his neck from falling too far into a noose. There is symbolism in every frame, every character. And the film’s resolution toes the perfect tone between much-needed hope and the acknowledgment of a scar that will never heal, not all the way.

Much of this is due to Ejiofor’s performance. He and Fassbender produce the kind of work that only the most dedicated performers can create; neither gnashes or wails to heighten the drama.

They realize there’s no need. Simply playing out the truth of these men is enough to craft the most heart-rending of conflicts. Not to be forgotten is newcomer Lupita Nyong’o, whose tortured Patsy will haunt audiences after the credits roll as surely as she haunted Solomon’s heart.

12 Years a Slave is epic, profound and appropriately difficult to watch. It neither needs nor wants Oscar glory, but will get it. And that’s a blessing, provided it urges more people to experience a truth America often tries to run from.

offee houses in the 1950s and ’60s didn’t resemble the ones that exist today. People’s faces weren’t hidden behind laptops and you probably couldn’t order a $5 latte.

“Most coffee shops in Boulder have this very clean, very sterile feeling,” Owens says. “They totally lack personality and don’t have nearly the community vibe that a place like Roma offered, where you could go at any time of the day and run into someone you knew.”

Tom Peters, who owns the beat book shop on Pearl Street and organizes a weekly open poetry reading at The Laughing Goat, says that Espresso Roma was a place where people from different walks of life could connect.

“It was always a gathering for young people that weren’t even in college,” Peters says.

“Almost the whole time it’s been there, it had a real strong presence of high school kids interacting with older people in a non-alcoholic environment.”

Owens, who now works at Pekoe Sip House in North Boulder, says that in her experience people don’t gather anywhere else like they did at Espresso Roma.

“There’s nowhere in Boulder where you can have rich people, homeless people, CU kids, transfer students and natives getting along in a cultural stew,” Owens says. “The rest of Boulder has its nice places and its not-so-nice-places. It’s very cut-and-dried, whereas at a Bohemian place like Roma, you could have a gentleman who’s been on the streets for 10

Effortless service a highlight at Sugarbeet

hen we go out for a dining experience, there are expectations, many of which we can’t even articulate, but know viscerally when they’re not met. That’s why as a food writer, I spend so much time writing about a restaurant’s environment and atmosphere. The food is important, but no matter how great it is, all the rest is equally vital to the experience. Happily, they’ve gotten all of it right at Sugarbeet in Longmont.

We were greeted warmly even though early for our reservation. We had decided to try some of the happy hour offerings before our meal. Because typically, happy hour is only available in the bar areas of restaurants, I said we’d be happy to sit at the bar before moving to our table. But instead I was told it wasn’t a problem at all — our table was ready and they’d hap-

pily make an exception for us. It was all beautifully accommodating, with no hint of irritation or exasperation, as can be experienced when people are begrudgingly trying to be hospitable. This set a lovely tone for the entire evening.

The Sugarbeet happy hour includes four craft beers on draft — from Oskar Blues, Ska, Victory and Asher — each for just $3. All wines by the glass are $3 off, and I chose a fantastic Block Nine Pinot Noir from California. They have seven small plates (four are gluten-free) for $5.50 — all taken from the appetizer section of their main menu — including roasted cauliflower, PEI mussel gratin and Dungeness crab ricotta fritters.

We opted for the Medjool dates stuffed with gorgonzola dolce, wrapped in crispy Parma prosciutto, drizzled with juniper-infused balsamic. Three large, plump dates arrived on a bed of field greens and radicchio. As much as I enjoy balsamic, it’s a strong flavor, and I found it overpowered the dates. I would have been happy with them alone on the dish. There was already enough going on — sweet, salty, soft, crunchy. They also offer house-smoked Marcona almonds for $3, which we had to have. Marcona almonds are always a treat, and when sprinkled with paprika, an even better one. Their happy hour is available Tuesday through Sunday from 4 to 5:30 p.m., and is a great way to sample a variety of dishes and drinks.

With 10 tables in the dining room — one of which seats eight for larger parties — it’s a comfortable but

Entrée prices are in the $20s, and this means they have to deliver the overall experience in a sophisticated way, which they do.

We shared a main dish, having eaten our way through the day already. Pappardelle with Harris Ranch short rib, sunchokes, parsnips, artichokes and wilted arugula. A spoon was thoughtfully brought to help wrangle the wide, flat noodles, which were cooked perfectly. The sunchoke, with a texture and flavor much like a potato, was an unexpected and welcome addition in this autumn dish. The small dice of carrot added a sweetness to each bite that I loved. The short rib, usually served in hunks, in this dish was cut into large squares, seared, and cooked so tender you could eat it with a fork. And we did.

Finished with slices of sautéed garlic and large pieces of roasted tomato, this was a complex dish to create, but a simply comforting one to eat. As much as was going on in it, it could have used more seasoning, but nothing a shake of salt and pepper provided on the tables couldn’t fix. The service was excellent; attentive and not at all intrusive. Well-paced and effortless (it takes a lot of effort to appear effortless), I will crave this, as much as the food, and will be back.

A historical side note: The first sugar beet factory opened in 1801 in Silesia in central Europe. From 1837 to 2010, France was the largest producer in the world. Sugarbeets also helped put Longmont on the map and its now iconic sugarbeet plant was built in 1905 and remained open until 1980.

THANKSGIVING

offered my apologies to Oskar Blues back in March, when I made my first trip to the Tasty Weasel and Grill & Brew and learned there’s a lot more to Boulder County’s brewing bad boys than hop-forward beers like Dale’s and Deviant Dale’s.

But this time around, when the Boulder Weekly gang heads to Liquids & Solids, I’m surprised again: Not only does Oskar Blues do malt, about half the OB beers on tap are dark and Steve Weishampel delicious.

That includes yet another silky, thick and amazing barrel-aged Russian imperial stout, Ten Fidy aged in Maker’s Mark bourbon barrels. I say yet another because I raved a few weeks ago about Crystal Springs’ Black Saddle, but I’m banging the drum again because it’s just a great beer. I really can’t imagine objections to a beer like the barrelaged Ten Fidy. To paraphrase Seinfeld’s mother, Who wouldn’t love it? Despite the barrel aging, it only tastes slightly of liquor, sticking instead to the sweet notes.

Like any responsible brewery, Oskar Blues serves the badass beer in 10-ounce glasses for drinkers’ safety: It’s still only 10.5 percent ABV like the original (c’mon, you knew where the name “Ten Fidy” came from, right?) but that’s still pretty high and it’s a good enough beer to be dangerous.

So maybe take a break from the liquor-y goodness and try OB’s other awesome taproom-only beers, like the Old Chub on nitro and its, well, liquory goodness. Actually, Old Chub is one of the less Scotch-like Scottish ales out there, in my opinion, trading the trademark peat flavors for sweetness, especially on a nitrogen tap. Grand Lake Brewing Company, which recently

shuttered its Grand Lake taproom and plans to open in Denver, sets the peatand-smoke standard with its Plaid Bastard — a must-have for dark beer lovers who haven’t tried it — and Old Chub holds down the other end of the Scottish ale spectrum, one of my favorite spectra in the world.

If you’re looking for smoke, Oskar Blues can do that too: a strange little concoction called Smidy Fingers Blackstrap Lager, billed to me by the server as “kind of like half a Ten Fidy.” I don’t know enough about brewing to know how a lager can be half of a stout, but in a way he was right: Blackstrap Lager is like a Russian imperial stout that’s had the brakes applied.

There’s a slight taste of Ten Fidy, a mild sweetness and a pleasant smoky flavor. It’s not the first time OB has used blackstrap molasses in a beer, as it produced Blackstrap Fever Dark Lager back in 2011.

But then Jeff ’s order, hardly consulting the menu before heading straight for the Deviant Dale’s, throws a big hoppy wrench in the whole thing.

Jeff ’s an Annapurna Amber guy; he’s a saison and bière de garde guy; he’s a Sawtooth guy. Yet this is the second time he’s headed straight for Deviant Dale’s, the double IPA that claims it’s a single. I’m getting to the bottom of this.

“Caramel? I like that,” he offers. “I don’t know. It just tastes good.”

Bad answer, good beer. Deviant Dale’s is a complex, bitter, caramelmalty monster, and I don’t blame Jeff for liking it. As much as Dale’s Pale Ale, Deviant Dale’s defines Oskar Blues, assertive and complex. I’m just glad they can pull off those qualities in all kinds of styles.
