Highroad Takeaways from the election

hen a political puck named Dick Tuck lost a California senate election in 1966, he said: “The people have spoken. The bastards.”

So now that the people have spoken up for Donnie Trump, were they saying they embrace his xenophobic, nativist, far-right policies? Not at all. Most Trump voters say they went for him because they think he’ll shake-up

America’s elite establishment, not because he’s a conservative. In fact, majorities of people all over the country voted for very progressive policies and candidates this year, including these ballot initiatives: •All four states that had minimum wage increases on the ballot passed them — Arizona, Colorado, Maine and Washington. Plus, a South Dakota proposal to lower its minimum wage was rejected by 71 percent of voters.

•Two states — California and Washington — had initiatives calling for repealing the Supreme Court’s Citizen United decision that has allowed corporate cash to flood into our elections. Washington also voted to provide public funding of their elections.

•A Minnesota initiative to take away the power of state lawmakers to set their own salaries, moving this authority to a bipartisan citizens’ council, won 77 percent of the vote.

In addition, many solidly-progressive “firsts” were elected on Tuesday, such as the first Indian-American woman in Congress (Pramila Jayapal of Washington), the first Latina U.S. senator (Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada), the first Indian-Black woman elected to U.S. Senate (Kamala Harris of California) and the first openlyLGBT governor (Kate Brown of Oregon). Trump is in the White House, but the takeaway from voters in this election is a mandate for progressive economic populism and more diversity among public officials.

Nixon explains why Trump won

he Idea Fairy and I were kicking back after the election when suddenly the door flew open and a shadowy figure emerged through the purple haze.

It was Richard Nixon.

“How do you like them ’taters!” he said triumphantly.

“Richard, what a pleasant surprise,” I said. “I thought you were back in Purgatory, and I don’t mean the ski area.”

“I was,” he said, “but right after we talked in September I got a gig as a Trump field rep in the upper Midwest.

My probation officer said he’d count it as community service.”

“Who’s your probation officer?” i-Fairy asked.

“Beelzebub,” he said curtly.

“What attracted you to the Trump campaign,” I asked? “I thought you’d end up working for Clinton.”

“It’s true I was attracted to Crooked Hillary’s campaign,” he said. “Her scandals are a lot like Watergate, only worse since they involve national security, so I could feel her pain. But in the end I realized that the Trump campaign was a better fit.”

“How so?” I asked.

“Think back to my original campaigns for Congress and the Senate in California,” he said. “I was running against two liberal Democrats. I took them out by attacking their character and imputing their loyalty. Trump intuitively understood the approach.”

“So you spent the last two months getting racists in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin to vote for Trump,” i-Fairy said irritably.

“It couldn’t be helped,” he shot back. “They are all blue states, so I had no choice.”

“You mean that in order to overcome the Democratic majorities in each state, you had to get Republican racists to the polls?” I asked.

“No,” he said. “These days the racists are found in the Democratic Party.

My job was to get Democrats to vote for Trump, which turned out to be pretty easy.”

“Come on,” I said. “A big part of the Democrats’ campaign was labeling 6 November 17, 2016

Trump a racist. How can you say the Democratic Party is the party of racism?”

“Care to define racism for me,” he said with a tight grin.

“That’s easy,” I said. “A racist is someone who judges people by the color of their skin instead of the content of their character.”

“An excellent definition,” he said, “taken directly from Martin Luther King’s ‘I have a dream’ speech.

“Now compare that with what millions of Americans did in 2008, when they voted for Barack Obama — because he’s black,” he said.

“Oh, come off it,” I said. “There were lots of reasons to vote for Obama besides his race. He’s a great speaker, has a Harvard Law degree, was a U.S. Senator, worked with the poor as a community organizer, promised to sweep back sea-level rises due to global warming...”

“Do you think that resume would have gotten him elected president if he was white?” Nixon interrupted. “Give me a break.

“It wasn’t his resume, or experience, or policy positions that put him in the White House. The decisive factor was that millions of voters chose Obama not despite his race, but because of it.

They said, in so many words “It’s time for the country to elect a black president, and he’ll do. But that doesn’t change the fact that Obama got elected because of the color of his skin, not the content of his character — which by definition is racist.”

“OK,” I said slowly, “maybe strictly speaking voting for Obama was racist.

But it was done for a good cause. It was a racist vote cast in order to strike a blow against racism — by electing a black president.”

“Ah, the old ‘the ends justify the means argument,’” he hooted.

“So now you’re trying to tell me that millions of Democrats in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, and Wisconsin voted Trump because they thought Trump was a racist,” I said.

“No. They voted for Trump despite the fact that he might be a racist, and see DANISH PLAN Page 8

Election night the chickens came home to roost. Trump’s unprecedented victory proves that hate is a stronger emotion than love. That anger won out over happiness. And, conservative, reactionary ideas won out over progressive ideals.

Laissez-faire over regulation of business.

At their core many Americans are racist and misogynist. Trump’s victory is a repudiation of the Democratic establishment.

The blame for Hillary’s loss falls squarely on her campaign and the Democratic establishment for disenfranchising Bernie Sander and his voters. This proves the old maxim that Democrats fall in love and Republicans fall in line. Men could not bring themselves to vote for a woman for president and how women could vote for Trump is unfathomable. Maybe, it was a matter of a self loathing women voting against Hillary because one thing that trial lawyers know is that women are harder on women than men are. It is likely that America will never elect a woman president.

This year’s political system is rigged

I cannot believe that Donald Trump won the presidency fairly. I definitely believe that it was rigged.

Trump loved to use that word throughout this race. Now it applies to him.

Here are questions that Americans should ask themselves: Why is it that everyone is astonished with the outcome of this race? No one thought for a second that he would win. Even his own party was against him. How is it that the political pundits and the polls were so wrong unless it was rigged?

Something smells rancid. How could

Trump take such battlegrounds as Florida, Pennsylvania and other states so easily when they were considered sure bets? I am of Hispanic heritage and it blows my mind that Hillary did not win Florida, a state with a high percentage of Latinos.

Are we going to let this situation happen without questioning this crazy outcome? Considering the kind of person we have been dealing with, it appears to me that we accept too easily this obvious wrong without first verifying if it is true. How can Republicans have complete control of our government? Are we to allow this scurrilous fascist to run our government? Where is “we the people?” Have we given up our rights and our freedom so easily?

Where is our backbone? Do we need to rise up and have an ongoing rebellion in order to humanize our society?

How do other countries see us? Do they seriously want to work with such a selfish and dangerous demagogue?

How safe are we with his presidency?

Actually, I feel quite comfortable using this language since Trump has taught us how to use defamation of peoples’ characters to get attention and make other people feel less.

The divide in our society has expanded a hundred fold. It may be the beginning of a civil war between both factions. ISIS and Russia should be very happy that he won the race. What are his plans for improving America? We never heard any of them while he was a presidential candidate. All we heard was conspiracies and threats.

Why is it that we are all confused about the outcome? I question Trump’s see LETTERS Page 8

inner circle: Bannon, Ailes, Russia and others. I feel that this was planned from the start and so they knew the outcome ahead of time. That is why Trump surrounded himself with those that are used to infiltrating, abusing standards, maligning others and using every opportunity to scheme their way into prominence.

Dumping Hillary’s emails and the FBI examining them close to the end of the race so her integrity could be questioned is abominable. How can we call Hillary corrupt when Trump and his associates are so corrupt that they could get away with this planned ruse?

Take the blinders off. We need to have an investigation.

Hillary Clinton, Democrats and “we the people” should stand up for a change and request that the votes be counted before we accept Trump as president.

Trump as president and leader

To those who refuse to acknowledge Trump as president, I say that he’s as much my president as have been all others who have held that office since I was first aware of there being such an office (Kennedy was my first president).

However, with Trump as president, I will live with whatever social disruption

he instigates, but I will not follow his lead when it comes to how I treat others. I will live with the impacts of whatever regressive science Trump champions, but I will not follow his lead when it comes to pursuing knowledge and understanding the world I live in. I will live with whatever sham declarations of charitability Trump sells, but I will not follow his lead when it comes to supporting charitable organizations or working with my neighbors for the betterment of my society. I will live with fallout from whatever immigration reform or big stick foreign policy Trump creates, but I will not follow his lead when it comes to him pushing international isolationism, jingoism and fear-mongering. I will live with the decisions of whatever collection of judges he causes to become members of the Supreme Court, but I will not follow his lead when it comes to individual, social, corporate or political rights and responsibilities. I will live with the hypocrisy that Trump and his political associates demonstrate, but I will not follow their lead when it comes to maintaining my sense of decency and character.

“They discounted Trump’s past racist and sexist remarks because they were more offended by the racism of the Democrats.

“And since several million of them had voted for Obama in 2008 for a supposedly moral racial reason — ‘It’s time, he’ll do’ — voting for their own racial interests didn’t produce any moral qualms.

“And of course having an opportunity to stick a finger in the eye of a bunch of condescending progressives who demean non-coastal America as fly-over country and slime its cultural values made voting for Trump positively irresistible.”

“I can’t believe Democrats are a bunch of racists,” i-Fairy said.

“Neither can most Democrats,”

Nixon replied. “But it is what it is. The Democratic Party embraced identity politics and multiculturalism a generation ago, and they are the new racism — a way of judging people by the color of their skins, national origins and cultural identities instead of by the content of their characters.”

“A lot of people in Boulder are taking Trump’s win really badly,” i-Fairy said.

“You don’t say,” the Tricky One replied with a sarcastic laugh. “Well, the night I resigned in 1974, people were standing a dozen deep in every checkout line at the Liquor Mart.

They were all buying Champagne.

There was a carnival atmosphere in the place. So tell the folks fretting about Trump’s election that I feel their fucking pain. And it hurts so good.”

Not my president

On Wednesday, November 9, I led a peaceful protest in Chautauqua Park. I am a conscientious objector. I love my country. I am a patriot.

Donald Trump will never be my president. He is on tape bragging about being a sexual predator.

Bragging about assaulting women.

Were he a young man in high school or college in Boulder, his life would be ruined for far less. He would be listed on sexual predator databases. He would be forever branded as a sexual predator. Instead, perhaps because he is a billionaire, he has been rewarded with president-elect; the highest office in our country.

What becomes now of the women who bravely came forward. Will they be silenced? Ignored? Discredited?

This man lost the popular vote. He attacked every minority group, made no secret of his hatred for women, lied about president Obama, lied about Hillary Clinton. He claims to care about labor, yet closed a casino in Las Vegas costing over 3,000 local people there their jobs. He would say anything to get what he wants. He will never be my president.

He claims to care about American steel workers, promising to restore jobs and prosperity in Allentown. How is he going to do that? He bought steel for his buildings from China. There he could take advantage of exploited labor and cheap prices. So he is caught in another lie.

Let us each take action. Action that is positive, action that makes our country a little bit safer to live in. Let us find action that is healing.

We can support our country as patriots, support each other, and not accept Mr. Trump as president. If he truly wishes to contribute to our country, he could be appointed to an advisory role in the government, perhaps. He could also start buying American-made goods the next time he builds a building.

Let us rally. The Electoral College has a chance to restore human decency.

We should honor the popular vote and give the presidency to Hillary Clinton!

Donald Trump’s position on “global climate justice” is that he is clearly a ‘climate realist.’”

On July 26, Trump told Fox News, “I say it [man-made climate change] could have a minor impact, but nothing, nothing to what they’re talking about.”

In his response to questions posed to all the candidates for president by ScienceDebate.org, Trump said, “There

is still much that needs to be investigated in the field of ‘climate change.’”

The reports of the Nongovernmental International Panel on Climate Change (NIPCC at www. climatechangereconsidered.org), which reference hundreds of research papers published in the world’s leading science journals, demonstrate that Trump’s climate skepticism is well substantiated. The NIPCC shows that

much of what we thought we knew about climate is either mistaken or highly debatable.

Trump was right to maintain that, rather than wasting money trying to stop hypothetical man-made climate change, our focus should be to “protect clean air and clean water,” things we know we can affect.

news ‘It’s been a good ride’

They have represented Boulder at several Democratic National Conventions, most recently in Philadelphia in July as strong backers of Hillary Clinton. They have both been strong advocates for public education as a way to ensure success for all members of the community. And both are gregarious beyond measure. The couple has given their lives to public service, in many ways institutionalizing their ideals in the process.

“People say to me, ‘Oh, now you can do what you want to do,’” Josie says. “And I’m like, ‘Well I’ve been doing what I want to do.’ Both of us. ... We’ve been so fortunate to really do stuff.”

Neither one points to family influence for their civic involvement. Rather, each cites an inherent awareness of inequality and personal conviction that later led them to the Democratic Party.

Because of frequent references to Franklin D. Roosevelt, Josie always knew her family was Democratic but it wasn’t something they talked about.

However, growing up in Oregon she noticed the adverse working conditions of farm laborers from a young age.

“You would see all these migrant workers sleeping in their cars and I would be really troubled by that, that sense of injustice,” Josie says. “I don’t think I knew to call it being a Democrat but I always had this strong sense of justice. So that was this sense of values

lthough both are retiring at the end of the year, don’t expect Josie and Rollie Heath to retreat to a secluded beach on a remote island for any extended period of time.

“We’d last probably a couple of weeks,” Rollie says.

“You’d start organizing the government structure,” Josie jokes.

“We haven’t figured it out yet to be honest,” Rollie continues. “It’s a little scary. I’ve been working since I was 10.”

As a term-limited state senator, Rollie is leaving the Colorado State House after the session ends in December. And Josie announced her retirement after 21 years at the helm of The Community Foundation in July. But beyond their most recent roles, the Heaths have been an integral part of the Boulder County community since they moved to the area in the early ’70s. As long-standing members of the Democratic Party, both have shaped the political landscape of the County and the state, in many ways helping to give Boulder the liberal identity it holds dear.

“What he was being paid and what he had to do [to make up for it.]”

Regardless of their somewhat apolitical upbringings, both Rollie and Josie served in student government at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where they met as House Fellows, the equivalent of today’s resident advisors.

“That’s probably something that attracted us because of civics and we were both interested in things going right,” Josie says. The couple married in 1961.

In college, Rollie was the chair of the campus “Dolgrin” party, which stood for Dorms, Greeks and Independents, a catch-all organization for everyone See HEATHS Page 12

on campus, Rollie says. “It seemed to me that if you were going to be on a campus, you needed to have everybody together. You couldn’t just do it from the fraternity/sorority point of view, even if I was very much a fraternity guy,” he says. “That’s more who I am, it’s how my brain was already working and I just ran with it.”

Subjected to the draft, Rollie began his public service career in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) in college. He continued with the program all through college and law school before entering the Judge Advocate General’s ( JAG) Corps as an Army lawyer.

“I had no intention of making a career of [the military], and I ended up doing 23 years,” he says.

Always intending to go into business, he was considering a job with Proctor & Gamble in Cincinnati when he received an urgent message from a General asking him to call. Josie was working as a teacher at the time.

“We were sure we were going to Vietnam,” Josie remembers. Instead, the General assigned Rollie to complete German-language school in Monterey, California, before sending him to become a liaison officer with the German government. The Army also paid for Josie to complete the language course, which she did the same week their first son was born. They moved to Germany shortly after.

opened up opportunities for us that we never would have had otherwise,” Josie says.

Both adjusted to life in Germany, quickly getting to know neighbors and becoming involved with the military community. Josie became the head of the German-American club and president of the Officer’s Wives Club, while teaching English as a Second Language. After about a year, Rollie began traveling up and down the Rhine River as the General’s translator.

“It was more darn fun,” Rollie says, “[and] gave me the entrée into the political [arena] and I took Josie along with me.”

But while skiing in the Austrian Alps, Josie severely broke her leg and had to wear a brace for almost three years. After the accident, the family moved to Virginia where they bought their first home and Rollie began teaching at the military law school at the University of Virginia campus, until he decided to retire from the military and go into business.

Rollie’s new job was in Denver with Armco Steel, and the Heaths moved to Boulder in 1970. Fresh out of her leg brace, Josie was attracted to the landscape and the community associated with the university.

“We kind of came to Boulder and started over,” she says.

But Rollie’s job required him to travel several weeks a month and Josie found herself at home with small children.

“We had always been together before, and I had never had a time when he was gone so much and that was very isolating for me,” she says. “The lifesaver for me was being engaged.”

She quickly became involved with the YWCA, especially since they had childcare, and was quickly surrounded by strong women leaders in the community. Having read The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan with a small book club in Germany, Josie quickly identified with the growing women’s movement in Boulder.

“I saw they were really interested in issues at that time, taking the sales tax off food and closing Rocky Flats, and I got right into that,” she says. “And from that the Democratic Party became a great vehicle.

And that became for me a very satisfying engaging way [to be involved].”

In 1972, Josie went to her first Democratic caucus in Boulder. She didn’t know anyone, but says she enjoyed every minute of it. Then it came time to elect people to attend the county assembly, and the leadership realized they needed to have at least one woman in the delegation.

When no one else at the caucus volunteered, Josie raised her hand.

“And so it was that sort of moment with [people] I didn’t know, who made me feel, as a woman and a total newcomer, that this is an open party,” she says. “And I’ve embraced that because I feel like it was always the place for me, as [someone] who saw it as a very transparent party trying to do the right thing.”

Then, in 1973, Rollie was offered a job at Armco Steel’s headquarters in Middletown, Ohio, and he took Josie back east to house hunt.

“We’ve been married 55 years and that’s the only night Jose cried all night,” Rollie says.

“I was just like, ‘I can’t be here. It’s too traditional,’” Josie recalls.

So she encouraged Rollie to find another job in Denver, which he did at Johns Mansville Corporation, where he worked until 1990.

“So while he’s doing that, I was circling Rocky Flats. So we were in these two very different worlds,” Josie says. “We were really living two different lives. He was in the corporate world and in that time corporate wives were not working or involved in things. They pretty much played bridge.”

Josie, however, continued to work with the Democratic Party in Boulder, following in the footsteps of other women role models she found inspiring.

“They did their homework, they had no self-interest that was going to be commercially beneficial, and they just really cared about what was good for the planet, what was good for families, and they were very active around issues of open space,” she says. “We just felt like if we wanted to do something, we could do it.”

The Heaths never hired a nanny, and Josie relied on a Boulder babysitting co-op to remain involved while raising three young kids. At one point, Josie walked in on her two oldest kids, somewhere around the ages of two and five, sitting in chairs with name tags on. When she asked what they were doing, “They said, ‘Oh, we’re in a meeting,’” Josie says, with a laugh. “And I thought, ‘Oh brother, is this child abuse?’”

But her hard work paid off. She chaired the Get out the Vote campaign in 1974, the year Boulder County first flipped from Republican to Democratic.

“We ran all these volunteer phone banks and that was astonishing to me, that all of us volunteers could flip the county to Democratic,” Josie recalls. “I think Boulder County, at least the City of Boulder was really just beginning to see an in migration of people, or an unrest of people here saying, ‘We want more. We want environmental sustainability. We want to really plan our future.’ ... I was here at the right time and things were open and I felt like there was an opportunity if you were willing to work hard.”

This was the first of what Josie calls “great victories,” but she also experienced defeat.

In 1976, she ran for the Colorado State Senate but lost to incumbent Republican Les Fowler. Josie took the loss particularly hard, since had she won, the state senate would have flipped Democratic as well.

However, Jimmy Carter won the presidential election that year and Josie was named the Rocky Mountain regional director for ACTION, the federal agency for voluntary service at the time. She was also named to the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals nominating committee, one of the few non-lawyer members to be appointed. At the first meeting Josie and the other members were told by the chairman that he would review all the applicants and then ask them their opinion on his finalists.

“Well that didn’t sound right,” Josie says.

She insisted that everyone on the committee saw all the applications and also volunteered time to do some of the clerking work herself. In her time with the

news committee, they nominated judges in Kansas, Utah and Oklahoma.

Given her background, each time Josie thought to herself, “Can I be fair when a woman is being considered? Could I really be objective?”

However, in Kansas and Utah no women applied. But in Oklahoma, Stephanie Seymour was one of the applicants, and Josie’s top pick based on credentials alone, she says.

As the committee met to discuss their nominations, each member was allowed to throw out a candidate, no questions asked. The chairman started and immediately disqualified Seymour. Josie asked for the chairman’s reasoning. According to Josie, he said, “Well, Mrs. Heath, I know you’re not a lawyer but the circuit court requires traveling. And if you see here, Mrs. Seymour has three children and couldn’t make all those trips.”

The room fell quiet and no one else would meet Josie’s gaze. When it came around to her turn, she eliminated the Chief Justice of the Oklahoma Supreme Court. “There was a gasp and [the chairman asked], ‘Why?’” she recalls. “And I said, ‘Based on the exact criteria that you have established. As you can see, he has five children and I can’t imagine he can travel.’”

In the end, the chairman agreed to consider Seymour if Josie would consider the Chief Justice. Eventually, President Carter nominated Seymour as the first woman judge on the Tenth Circuit. She later became the first woman to be Chief Judge as well.

But this victory was followed by another loss, this time of national significance.

Josie says she could hardly believe it when Ronald Reagan beat out Carter in his re-election bid, a fact that also cost her her job.

However, the Democratic Party soon urged her to run for Boulder County Commissioner in 1982, a position she held for the next eight years.

Meanwhile, Rollie was operating in the corporate world as a member of the Denver Chamber of Commerce and the founder of the Rocky Mountain World Trade Center. He was also still traveling consistently with Johns Mansville, making his way to senior vice president of the entire company and president of the international company. Their lives were over-the-top busy. Rollie recalls celebrating one of his major promotions by taking his youngest son to Chuck E. Cheese’s. It was just the two of them and a thin pizza because Josie was at a Commissioners hearing and the older kids were busy.

Regardless of the crazy schedules, he’s always been very supportive of his wife’s career and his pride is apparent as he smiles while listening intently as she recounts her stories.

“I show up during this whole time, after being in God-only-knows somewhere off in the world,” says Rollie, who was often away for two or three weeks at a time, “And hear all these stories and just live vicariously through it all.”

And every once in awhile, Rollie and Josie’s worlds would collide and the seemingly disparate public lives they led seemed to make sense. At one point, Johns Mansville had a joint venture with the Icelandic government and Rollie brought Josie along on one of his trips.

At a business dinner, “Josie gives this speech basically comparing Iceland and Boulder County,” Rollie says. “It was an incredible speech, and she one-ups me as usual. It was one of those magical nights where all of this stuff came together.”

As Josie prepared to run for the U.S. Senate in 1990, Rollie decided it was time to leave Johns Mansville and help with her campaign. To announce his retirement, he wrote a letter to his 1,800 employees explaining his decision to leave in order to support his wife.

“It is the ultimate love letter in our relationship,” Josie recalls.

But that doesn’t mean the role of campaign spouse came easily for Rollie. “I think it was one of the much more difficult things that I have ever done,” he says.

“Her campaign managers just didn’t know what to do with me. Here I had just come off a major role and had some sort of reputation in my own mind.”

It didn’t help that Josie was the only female candidate for the Senate that year, and there were only two female Senators at the time, both unmarried. At one point in the campaign, Rollie was asked to be on a TV show pitting him against seven U.S. Senate wives. In preparation, Rollie studied up on all of Josie’s policies to be prepared to answer any question.

“And the first question was what was my favorite recipe, to which I had absolutely no idea,” he says. “The show was designed to make me feel how they had all felt. Here were seven very bright women in their own right, who were never asked anything other than, ‘What does your husband think?’ ... For one hour I just felt absolutely horrible.”

Not only that, but it was the first time Rollie’s corporate career and Josie’s position in the Democratic party were at odds with each other. In the primaries, for example, her opponent used Johns Mansville’s environmental record to attack her candidacy. She was also subject to various unfounded character attacks.

“I had enjoyed tough races but never things that were below the belt,” she says.

“This Senate race was just bruising.”

Although she eventually won the primary, she lost the election to Hank Brown, whom President Reagan personally campaigned for.

“We ran our sloganless politics as it ought to be,” Josie says. “We ran a very grassroots campaign in 1990. What you learn is that despite the fact you have 1,000 people going door to door, big money wins.”

Josie says she was outspent roughly six-to-one, “And that was only the money you can track.”

Ever the resilient one, Josie ran again in 1992.

Although unsuccessful for a second time, Josie’s campaigns for U.S. Senate gave Rollie an idea of his own.

“It was very disappointing to me basically that there was no credibility given to anybody in the Democratic Party who was a businessperson,” Rollie says. So he began gathering former colleagues and friends and started the Democratic Business Coalition, with the goal of engaging mostly Republican business leaders with Democratic politicians elected to office in Colorado.

“People can’t make good decisions unless they understand how the resources of the community come together, how they get allocated,” Josie adds. “And it just felt like we didn’t have that economic piece. That [politicians] couldn’t make good decisions without the whole spectrum. [They] might not be more pro business but [they]’d understand.”

Plus, it was a way for Rollie to utilize the breadth of his background to make a positive contribution. “And it worked for at least a little while,” Rollie says.

Although the coalition is no longer around, the business influence in the Colorado Democratic Party is still evident.

While Rollie became increasingly involved in politics, Josie took a step back from public office and became the president of The Community Foundation of Boulder County in 1995. Since then, she has overseen the granting of roughly $69 million in local grants as well as a growing endowment of more than $52 million.

Among other programs, the Foundation focuses on addressing the education gap, a major motivation for Rollie’s 2002 bid for Colorado Governor, his first attempt to hold a public office. As a staunch opponent of Colorado’s Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights (TABOR), Rollie challenged Bill Owens in the hopes of restoring education funding by reforming spending limits. But Josie was hesitant about another public campaign, even if it was Rollie’s.

“I felt like I personally, and our family, was still kind of bruised and the idea of picking ourselves up and beating ourselves up one more time was not appealing,” Josie says. “But he was determined.”

“Naïve as all get out,” Rollie quips. “But don’t forget I had the experience of doing two Senate campaigns for her and I really admired so much of what Josie did. Even though she lost, I know she changed the debate and I thought I could do the same thing at this level.”

Two close friends advised against the campaign, saying they didn’t want to see Rollie get hurt. “And I said, ‘You know when I’m on my death bed, the only way I can get hurt is if I had a chance to run for governor and I didn’t do it, then I’d get hurt,’” he remembers, with a hint of emotion in his voice. “I said, ‘You know if I lose, the sun will come up the next day and I will be on my way doing something else. I’ll still have a wonderful wife and kids and a lot of friends. So you lose. It’s Boulder Weekly

news not the end of the world.’ And I lost and it wasn’t the end of the world.”

Although Rollie lost the election, Owens did propose Referendum C to restore education funding a few years later, something Rollie says he never would have done before he challenged him on it during the debates.

Rollie went on to start a private company working as an executive coach, never intending to run for office again. However, in 2008, term-limit restrictions opened up the Boulder State Senate seat and friends asked Rollie to consider running.

Initially he declined, but Josie encouraged him to pursue the position.

“Only in her way, she said, ‘Well, I think you ought to think about it,’” he says.

“Two weeks later I was running.”

As a Colorado State Senator, Rollie has worked tirelessly in his efforts to increase public education funding by raising the income tax in the state through both Proposition 103 in 2011 and Amendment 66 in 2013. However, Coloradans voted down both measures when they reached the ballot. He tried again with the Colorado Tax Income Increase in 2016, but proponents failed to gather enough signatures to meet state requirements for a general vote. “The biggest frustration for me is that we didn’t get it on the ballot this time,” Rollie says.

Nevertheless, he’s remained determined to see education reforms that give students the opportunity for success. In 2015, he sponsored four out of eight workforce bills that passed, helping to establish concurrent enrollment and technical internships and apprenticeships as part of the educational system in Colorado.

“I think it’s one of the solutions to all this anger,” Rollie says. “If you get people with a decent job and have them be able to live a reasonable life, I think a lot of the anger goes away.”

Neither Rollie nor Josie seems to have any intention for running for public office again, but they don’t explicitly deny the possibility either. In many ways, their careers are perfect examples of the evolution of the Democratic Party and American politics. They’ve had to navigate a changing political landscape, one of increased spending coupled with the decline of both media quality and coverage, which has left many politicians wary of the press.

“There’s not enough of the media to really be able to air the kinds of things we should be having conversations about,” Josie says. As a politician, “It’s a disservice to not let people know why am I thinking that and what brought me to this place.

Why did I arrive at this decision?”

Plus, “The external rules have changed,” Josie continues. “And that’s really changed the local party. When you gave so much more power to outside PACs and special interest groups that had the money, it took away the power of the party.”

The best way forward is to overturn Citizens United, Rollie says. But there also has to be a willingness to work with colleagues from opposing parties on issues where compromise is possible, while not focusing on non-negotiables.

“Invariably, about 80 percent of the things you agree on but you only talk about the 20 percent of things that you’re never going to agree on,” he says.

“You figure out where you can go and then hopefully that will lead to other results. That’s the only way we’re going to break out of this. ... What you do is you find areas you can agree on and build trust within those relationships.”

“Trust is the word,” Josie adds. “And it’s hard to earn and once you’ve earned it you have to be careful never to betray it. And yet for people who feel like you compromised, how do they not see it as betrayal? And I think trust comes when you all come together and you sort out hard choices.”

But somewhere along the way, Josie says, the political vehicles to build trust have broken down.

“I’ve just learned you can’t take anything for granted,” Josie says. “Even if you’ve earned people’s trust, you have to affirm with people, ‘Are you with me?’ We make assumptions that people are. ... In a political sense, one of the most difficult things is when you think people are with you and they’re not.”

These are poignant reflections in a time of political turmoil within the Democratic Party and in the nation as a whole. But looking ahead, what comes next for the Heaths remains undetermined.

“We’re both in a place in our lives where we can say, ‘No regrets,’” Josie says. “If you have a regret in a personal way it may be somebody’s feelings were hurt in an unintentional way. But I feel like we both tried to be principled about what we said and what we did.”

Rollie is a bit more specific, saying he plans on joining some boards and remaining engaged and active in the education advocacy he championed while in the state Senate, although he doesn’t give any more detail than that.

“I’m on my 12th reinvention,” he says. “I’ve had so many varied careers, going from the military to doing what I’m doing now and everything in between. I’ve tried different things and I’m glad I did. It’s been fun. It’s been a good ride.”

A return to the grassroots Looking ahead from COP22

arrakesh, Morocco — From across the ocean, I’m imagining the sun still rises and sets on the Front Range, that daily life goes on after the election. As we come to the end of COP22, the U.N. Climate Talks in Marrakesh, Morocco, I prepare to return home at a significant moment in our nation’s history. As we hurtle ever-faster toward the brink of climate disaster, a climate-change denier is packing his bags for the White House. My main report back from COP22 is both sobering and hopeful: At this moment, global policy cannot save us. COP22 has shattered any remaining hopes that the global political class can address climate justice goals — it is us, at the grassroots, that must keep fossil fuels in the ground and build life-sustaining systems and solutions.

My time at COP22 has been a whirlwind of meetings, thousands of emails, new connections and late-night strategy conversations. COP22 consists of both a formal negotiating space and a movement space where activists from around the world gather.

Beneath the fast pace is a persistent, unanswered question bubbling up amongst U.S. youth and movement leaders — how can we win climate justice campaigns and realize the stated goals of the Paris Agreement in the coming years? The task is daunting.

We have been scrambling since the election. The chaos here is palpable, and no one actually knows what will happen next. And yet, as an organizer, I say bring it on.

We can use uncertainty to our advantage. As COP22 draws to a close, we as a youth movement see that the time for incrementalism is over. Trump’s win and intention to retreat from international climate treaties pulls the veil off of a climate negotiations process that was never the solution in the first place. The Paris Agreement provides a useful framework and set of diplomatic measures for keeping world leaders engaged on climate. Nothing more, nothing less. The agreement never went far enough to ensure that we don’t cross critical tipping points, and the agreement never did enough to support adaptation, loss and damage for the most vulnerable.

This week, the international climate advocacy community continues to hold its breath for an upcoming Trump announcement about withdrawing from the Paris Agreement. Yet, our movements must keep breathing, for our message is now clearer than ever: Anyone who cares about climate change and social justice must rise up and build a massive, powerful social movement. The time for engagement with the process is ending. Large NGOs, universities and donors must direct resources into resistance efforts and the creation of alternatives outside of formal government channels.

We need a massive wave of creative non-violent direct action to physically keep fossil fuels in the ground.

Organizations who have not considered it before must now consider civil disobedience and mass mobilization techniques. Such tactics have a proven track record of shifting power dynamics and winning concrete goals,

such as the rejection of the Keystone XL Pipeline under Obama.

While we resist, we must create. Solutions such as community-owned renewable energy and localizing food production can engage millions across the country in significantly reducing emissions. Through permaculture regenerative land-use practices, we can draw down atmospheric carbon back into the soil. Community policing initiatives, reclamation of public space for community gatherings, restorative justice programs, and safe houses and sanctuary cities can provide safety and support for those most at risk under a Trump administration. Giving energy to solutions enlivens our organizing and keeps us focused on the vision we want for the world. This will be critical in the months and years ahead.

So yes, the world goes on. Any “results” from the corporate-sponsored COP22 won’t bring about any of the deep systems change we need. Instead, we must build critical mass, by welcoming our friends and family members who have been shaken awake by the election of Trump. We must be creative and visionary, utilizing a diversity of tactics including civil disobedience. As I return from COP22, I am neither hopeful nor hopeless.

I feel more ready than ever to organize, to create and to reimagine what it means to be alive on a warming planet. While full of injustices, our world is ready for healing and systemic change. I invite you to join us.

Environmental law professor talks government inaction on climate change

hen Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005, Mary Wood, law professor and faculty director of the Environmental and Natural Resources (ENR) Law Center at the University of Oregon, was expecting her third son. With a long career both practicing and teaching environmental and natural resources law, climate change was not a new concept for Wood. But in the wake of Katrina’s devastation, she began to see the connections between the future of the environment and the future of humanity more clearly.

“Climate [change] just hit me as this horrendous new reality that my child would be born into,” she says. “Every young person is facing an unthinkable future if we don’t get this problem under control.”

Wood has since become nationally recognized for her scholarship on the public trust doctrine, or the principle that public natural resources must be maintained as a lasting endowment for the public’s use.

Recognizing the failure of statutory law to adequately deal with major environmental problems, Wood uses the public trust doctrine to compel government action on climate change. Her 2013 book, Nature’s Trust: Environmental Law for a New Ecological Age, inspired Atmospheric Trust Litigation (ATL), the legal approach now being used in cases and petitions brought by the organization Our Children’s Trust (OCT) on behalf of children and youth throughout the United States and other countries.

“Atmospheric Trust Litigation is an orchestrated global litigation effort to force governments to reduce carbon dioxide emissions before the planet goes over an irrevocable tipping point,” Wood says. “The claim says that the federal government is a trustee of our atmosphere, just as it is a trustee of public lands and wildlife and water. And as trustee, it has the fiduciary duty to the youth beneficiaries to protect what it holds in trusts so that the climate system will continue to support life in this country.”

Court of Oregon on behalf of 21 youth plaintiffs from around the country against the Obama Administration over its inaction to effectively combat climate change. On Nov. 10, Federal Judge Ann Aiken rejected all arguments from the federal government and the fossil fuel industry to dismiss the case. The youth plaintiffs are now preparing for trial.

By allowing greenhouse gas emissions to hinder

future generations’ right to natural resources, Wood maintains that the U.S. government is breaching its constitutional duty to national and international youth. While not involved as a lawyer in the litigation, Wood assesses the ATL campaign from an academic perspective, calling the Juliana case “the biggest case on the planet,” a phrase that has also been adopted by Julia Olsen, executive director and chief legal counsel of OCT. In July 2014, seven young people filed a different appeal in the Denver District Court in hopes of overturning a Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC) decision that denied the See PUBLIC TRUST Page 22

youth’s petition for stronger fracking regulations in November 2013. In December 2014, the court ruled in favor of the plaintiffs and ordered the case to proceed.

However, Denver District Court Judge J. Eric Elliff affirmed COGCC’s order to deny the fracking petition in February 2016. The youth plaintiffs appealed Judge Elliff ’s decision in April. Olsen says that OCT finished briefing the appeal in the Colorado case and that all legal arguments were submitted to the court the first week in November.

“Now we’re waiting to see if we will have an oral argument,” Olsen says. “We have requested the court set an oral argument. The legal arguments in writing are submitted so the plaintiffs are waiting to set a hearing, which they’re hopeful [the court] will, so that we can present the arguments at the hearing and so that Coloradans can come out to that Courtesy of Mary Wood hearing and support the youth.”

Wood emphasizes the danger of governments not recognizing the consequences of their actions, or inactions, until it’s too late.

Companies are pushing into communities promising riches but irrevocably damaging natural resources, she says. As an academic but also as a mother, Wood is concerned about water supplies contaminated by fracking and the subsequent lasting harm to local communities. That’s why Wood stresses the importance of the national case and the fight for the future that it represents.

However, the legal case is only one avenue. It’s going to take citizens rising up on every front to save communities and halt oil and gas companies’ exploits, she says.

“If this case succeeds, then the federal government is going to have to completely overhaul its fossil fuel policy, such that it phases out fossil fuel altogether.

Because we simply can’t continue using fossil fuels and still hope to have a habitable country at century’s end,” she says.

Ultimately, the youth plaintiffs seek a court-ordered, enforceable plan to achieve deep cuts in greenhouse gas emissions, adequate to avert looming climate tipping points. Wood drives home the point that citizens across communities in Colorado and beyond have to work to provide the backing for the relief that is sought in this federal case. She says it is important to view local environmental efforts as integral and part of a global effort. But she also has words of encouragement for local activists in Colorado who suffered defeat by not getting the local control and setback initiatives on the ballot this fall.

“No major movement has grown without multiple repeated defeats along the way,” she says. “If you look at the major movements of our time, every defeat resulted in a greater victory. If the people in Colorado had passed these initiatives years ago, they wouldn’t have gone through the pain and work of building a community-wide movement. Coloradans have been pioneers in this movement. The people are more powerful now because the situation is so dangerous for young people.”

As Wood says, the extraordinary danger young people face from this climate emergency is becoming widely apparent, and it is creating unprecedented power in the people.

The goal of this is to interpret the chemical signals that plants use to determine information about the groundwater and soil nearby.

To create these bomb-sniffing spinach plants, the scientists developed a carbon-based tube that acts as a sensor for the plant. The tubes glow a different color under infrared light, allowing scientists to see when a plant detects changes in the soil and Wikimedia Commons the environment around them.

With this technology, it is possible to get information from plants that would take people much longer to determine. For example, a plant can tell if there is a drought imminent far before a human can because of the shifts in the availability of nutrients in the groundwater and soil. But with the types of chemical indicators these scientists are studying, it is possible to read the plant’s chemical signals to determine when a drought is coming.

There is a wide range of possibilities for this technology, and it may even be taken as far as to detect changes in the composition of the soil and water around the plant, leading to earlier detection of contaminated soil and water.

WORLD RELIGIOUS LEADERS STRIVE FOR A RENEWABLE FUTURE

During a side event at COP22, the conference of the U.N. Convention on Climate Change in Marrakesh, Morocco, representatives from major world religions, financial institutions and foundations gathered to advocate for a switch to investing in cleaner energy, leaving fossil fuels behind.

In a historic push for divestment, the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) Wikimedia Commons announced that it was no longer investing money in fossil fuels, but rather in renewable energy with hopes for a greener future.

“According to Islam’s most basic and fundamental teachings, human beings have been uniquely charged with the great responsibility of being guardians of the Earth,” Dr. Azhar Azeez, ISNA’s president, told the meeting according to Climate News Network.

In a statement, the group of faith leader’s pledged their commitment to rapidly change out fossil fuels with renewable energy sources in order to keep the world’s average temperature from rising more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Other notable signatories include the Dalai Lama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Gretchen Castle, general secretary of Friends World Committee for Consultation.

The group not only aims to cut public finances investment in fossil fuels, but also to end energy poverty through the use of renewable energy and protect the rights of people and communities caught in the transition. ISNA’s divestment could help turn fracking investors away in the United States, and has other possible implications, such as igniting debate in the oil-rich countries of the Middle East.

Becoming a ninja CU Students face off against other schools in a college ‘Ninja Warrior’ challenge

A

t 16, Bobby Reedy knew he wanted to be a ninja — a ninja warrior, that is. To help him become a contestant on the beloved obstacle course show American Ninja Warrior, Reedy’s stepfather helped the teenager build some of the iconic obstacles from the show in their backyard, like the finger-cramping cliffhanger and the core-crunching salmon ladder. While training, Reedy sent numerous audition videos to the show over the years.

Finally, as a junior at the University of Colorado Boulder, Reedy will get his chance to become a ninja, joining two fellow CU students for a special five-episode program called Team Ninja Warrior: College Madness.

Spawned from the popularity of American Ninja Warrior, Team Ninja Warrior pits 24 teams of three members each against one another and the obstacle course to gain points.

This incarnation of the show takes classic college rivalries off the football field and basketball courts and into the haphazard world of extreme obstacle courses. Joining Reedy in representing CU are Matt Normile and Alexandra Regenold.

Reedy, perhaps in a poetic tip of the hat to his longtime love of the show, is team captain for the CU students. The junior is studying political science and is looking toward law school after he gets his undergraduate degree, and eventually a career in the law profes-

“I mean for me, Alexandra Regenold, Matt Normile and Bobby it’s been a long jourReedy hanging out, ninja ney since I started style. when I was 16, really training for the show,” he says. “I don’t know, it’s just a big passion of mine when I was in high school, and eventually built up to this bigger thing.”

Reedy was a kicker and punter for his high school football team, something he believes helped him build the agility, endurance and speed it takes to navigate the hairy obstacles of a Ninja Warrior course.

After moving from Chicago to Boulder for college, Reedy took up rock climbing to keep up with his upper body strength training.

Like Reedy, fellow team member Alexandra Regenold has a passion for climbing, providing the upper body strength necessary to tackle the course.

Regenold is the sole female member of the team.

The Iowa native is a senior working on a degree in English, who hopes to teach elementary school once she is done with her undergraduate studies.

“It’s pretty uncharacteristic of me to do something like this,” Regenold admits.

“Which was Bobby [Reedy],” Regenold says. “And so then they got us in contact.”

Rounding out the three-member team is Matt Normile, a Colorado native from Monument. The junior is studying aerospace engineering. His background, perhaps unsurprisingly, is also in climbing.

“I wasn’t really good at all the hopping, stuff like that,” he says. “That scared the crap out of me.”

For Normile, climbing is a sport he has had less time for these days since his busy schedule keeps him occupied. But he has found a renewed interest in the popular Boulder pastime since being chosen for the competition. “[I] kind of lost that interest in climbing coming to college just because I was so busy. I kind of stopped doing it all together,” he says. “But starting to train for this show I regained that interest, and I’ve actually been doing it almost every day since the show, so I was really glad to get that passion back.”

Reedy and Normile are both members of the CU chapter of Alpha Sigma Phi. Reedy asked his fraternity brothers if they were interested in sending in tryout videos, and a few members did, but it was only Normile who was chosen to be on the show. Normile and Reedy had climbed together prior to being on the show, but the pair only met Regenold during their last minute training.

To prepare, the three CU students practiced at gyms and courses specifically designed to mimic the obstacles found in the Ninja Warrior series.

As part of their last-minute training, they worked out together at the Warrior Playground, a gym in Longmont, that has some of the classic Ninja Warrior obstacles.

They also trained together at a parkour specialized gym in Boulder that features various strength and movement training obstacles.

“They’ve got open gym on Mondays and Wednesdays, and they’ve got a really sketchy warped wall there and then a trampoline and a pit and it was cool. It was a fun time,” Regenold says.

Not only did the students train in gyms, but also at the home courses of previous American Ninja Warrior competitors.

“I went up to Brian Arnold’s place in Fort Collins, and he and [Ian] Dory, who has also been on the show ... and I trained. [It] was horrifying because they’re amazing. They’re insane,” Regenold says. “They ... were training for [Team Ninja Warrior] too. So it was like speed trials, and we’d have to sprint around the house, and then there’s a garage door sliver that we had to jump on and run across, and PVC pipe that we were running across, and ropes we were swinging from. They had so much stuff, it was kind of crazy.”

After training, the student competitors flew to Los Angeles, California, where they stayed for a long weekend to film the competition.

“It was really fun. It was a free vacation, they paid for everything,” Normile says.

In that respect, it’s like in a regular Team Ninja Warrior tournament.

“Very passionate people, it was a true blessing being around some of the top athletes from across the country, all representing their schools. It was a really good experience, humbling experience for us too, knowing that we got to represent CU,” Reedy says.

But the students took away much more than that.

“Just seeing a lot of people who were so passionate about what they were doing, that that’s kind of like how they define who they are ... that was just so cool for me,” Normile says. “It just made me really think about like how there’s a lot of people over there who would just love to live in Boulder because they were rock climbers, and I just kind of realized, ‘Wow, I’m kind of like living their dream right now.’”

For Regenold, new friendships were a key takeaway.

“I’ve always done really poorly in competitions just because I psych myself out a lot,” Regenold says. “One thing that I loved about this was the fact that even once the show was [filming], it was literally like running next to your friends.”

And for someone like Reedy, who has been a fan of the show since he was a teenager, a long-held dream become a reality.

“Since I’ve been training for so long ... there’s always been that question of how well I do or what the actual course will be like, and being there and seeing the course was just a whole new experience.” he says. “I’ve been to gyms all across the country, but it’s nothing like being at the actual obstacle course, seeing it, being there.”

The competitors ran into the warped wall on their course, along with other difficult obstacles, like floating tiles, a rope swing and suspended poles.

Perhaps Normile sums it up best: “That was unreal,” he says. “When I first saw the obstacle course I was like, ‘Holy shit, this is actually it.’”

The Society for Creative Aging explores life through theater

E

xposition, conflict, action, climax, denouement — the pathway by which order falls to chaos in each of Shakespeare’s plays. How that order is restored, whether through the catharsis of catastrophe or the satisfaction of a happy ending, determines whether or not we call it a tragedy or a comedy.

Either way, by classifying the plays, we seek to understand them. But in the process we may be oversimplifying what is a complex story into overly reductive buckets of “good” or “bad.”

Fortune, remembers playing Anne Frank as a kid. That role taught her to look past who’s supposed to play certain parts, encouraging her to look beyond stereotypes and expectations. A lesson that, in theater and in life, applies even today as she steps into the genderbending casting decision by director Jim Valone.

Thoms, who is choosing to play Vanity as a sexy and seductive woman, is also using the role to bring out a side of herself largely unknown and unexplored, especially in her later years.

As Vanity, she only has nine lines in Outrageous Fortune, which she admits she is struggling to memorize.

“It’s always been hard for me, remembering my lines,” she says. “But especially lately.”

Thanks to the encouragement of director Jim Valone she is working on ways to improve. A lot of VIVA’s actors struggle to memorize lines as age has a way of diminishing the faculty of memory. Valone has actors practice by going through drills, like looking at lines for 10 seconds and then putting it down and reciting them to the group.

“It is amazing what you can remember after only 10 seconds,” Thoms says.

“The brain is more capable than I give it credit for.”

The company has also developed ways to accommodate such challenges, little tricks of the trade like working in an extra prop, like a book, lined with cues and reminders for the actor.

“One time, we gave an actor a note to put in his pocket, to check when he needed a cue on his lines,” Hale says.

“It was working too, but then on the night of the play, he forgot which pocket he put the note in!”

Each of the actors at the table approaches aging with determined confidence, sarcasm and an irrepressible attitude of making the most of their remaining years, which makes Outrageous Fortune a fitting production for the company.

“This is a comedy with poignancy that suits us well,” Thumin says. “It asks: ‘Can any of us change our habits, the ones that are so ingrained that we think them immovable? And, if we succeed in changing them, will our stories die? Will we disappear?’ In a big way, we are our fatal flaws and this play literally brings them to life on stage.”

“Luckily,” Campbell adds, “it’s a comedy.”

“I’ve always had luck getting the guitar on the plane with me; I feel bad because I’m always ‘that guy’ who takes up a lot of space in the overhead. But in the U.S., after some airlines completely destroying some artists’ guitars, I don’t know if there was some guitarist or lobby group or what, but Congress actually passed a law that airlines have to allow you to try to get your guitar on the plane.

“It’s a first-come, first-served basis — if you’re the last one to board the plane, there may not be room. On international flights it’s a little trickier. When the price is OK, I’ll just buy a ticket for it.

On my last European tour, it was two tickets: Mr. Trace Bundy, and Mr. Acoustic Guitar.”

On the current tour, Bundy and Jung played a regrettably timed twodate stand just outside D.C., in Vienna, Virginia. For a lot of people there, the night of Nov. 9th was a pretty glum occasion (Diamond Don won a mandate-affirming 4 percent of the vote there), and Bundy and Jung had the unenviable task of entertaining a theater full of people anticipating the end of civilization as we know it.

“I got in on the 7th, and we left a day open for Sungha to get there and readjust his clock a bit. And then all the election craziness the next day, and we had a show the next night. And yeah, you could just feel somberness about the whole crowd, it was very subdued.

“I just thought, y’know, we just have to put on the most joyful concert we can.

“And I think... I hope... everyone there left with a little smile on their face.”

ne of the many pleasures of going to the movies is the discovery of new ideas, new voices and new faces. Last weekend, that discovery belonged to newcomer Hayden Szeto as he walked the red carpet at the Denver Film Festival and charmed the screen in The Edge of Seventeen.

Though The Edge of Seventeen centers on Nadine (Hailee Steinfeld) — a volcano of a teenager who thinks the world revolves around her and that no one is as broken as she — it is the supporting cast surrounding Steinfeld that Hayden Szeto grounds his character in relatability in The Edge of Seventeen. makes Edge such a pleasurable experience. We mourn the broken things, chair legs wrenched from their seats, chipped plates, the threadbare clothes. We work the magic of glue, drive the nails, mend the holes.

We save what we can, melt small pieces of soap, gather fallen pecans, keep neck bones for soup. Beating rugs against the house, we watch dust, lit like stars, spreading across the yard. Late afternoon, we draw the blinds to cool the rooms, drive the bugs out. My mother irons, singing, lost in reverie.

I mark the pages of a mail-order catalog, listen for passing cars. All day we watch for the mail, some news from a distant place.

‘Arrival’ isn’t about what you think it’s about

ood science fiction makes you ask hard questions. Things like “What is the true core of human nature?” and “Do they really expect us to believe Jeremy Renner is smart?” Writer Eric Heisserer and director Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival is by no means a perfect movie. Again, it seriously presents Jeremy “For real, tho, you see J-Lo’s boobies?!”

Renner as a scientist, albeit one prone to frequent mansplaining, which is the only part that tracks. And yet, Arrival is a delicate, thoughtful meditation on nuanced subjects that aren’t even hinted at in the trailers. Sloppy though it may be, the sum of its parts is emotionally staggering.

Amy Adams plays Dr. Louise Banks, who must be the highest compensated academic linguist in history, given her living accommodations. One day, alien beings that look like giant, wrinkled old-man hands park their kidney stone-esque spaceships above 12 sites around the world. When they start trying to talk to humans, using sounds resembling Yo-Yo Ma trying to play Amy Adams believably plays a linguist who works alongthe brown note, Banks is side Jeremy Renner’s less-believable scientist as they try to translate and communicate with aliens. called in by Colonel Weber (Forest Whitaker) to translate.

Don’t worry, it’s not like they’d let a lady be in charge! She still has to report to Dr. Physics Math Scientist Ian Donnelly (Renner), whose dialogue sounds like an intern Googled “how to say smart stuff.” Together — and by “together,” I mean she does all the hard work and he watches — they begin to communicate with the intergalactic beings. But will it be in time? Or will Russia and China start nuking stuff just to nuke stuff? This is pre-Trump America, so we don’t nuke first.

What’s amazing is that none of this is really what Arrival is about. Sure, all of it is a big part of the plot, but the concrete narrative elements bend and bow to what winds up being the film’s central question: If you knew that the best thing that ever happened to you would also mean the worst thing that ever happened to you, would you do it anyway? The very best fiction that tackles massive moments like alien invasions or zombie apocalypses often places intimacy above spectacle and scope. The climactic decision in Arrival is about nothing more than a mom and her kid. It’s gut-wrenching and so very beautiful. Despite Jeremy Renner.

Some people will not like Arrival for completely understandable reasons. Some logistical things are super wonky, like the ability of soldiers who are part of a world-changing, top secret crisis being allowed to just call home and shoot the shit. The narrative twist rolled out in the final act can also be kabobbed with questions pretty quick-like. But the ambition and audacity of a major motion picture to tackle what it does, how it does, should not be underappreciated.

Arrival brought me to the brink of tears several times, and not through cheap gimmicks or narrative trickery but through simple, universal questions about the inseparability of heartache and love. Cheeseball dialogue and farty casting be damned; if a movie makes you feel and think this much, it’s really damn good.

Richard is a man of few words and fewer emotions. With his short haircut, white short-sleeve button-up and a silent, stoic manner, Richard is a poor laborer who just wants to be left alone to love his wife and raise his family. If his wife weren’t black, no one would have batted an eye.

Mildred (Ruth Negga) is a different story. She is fully aware of the injustice forced upon her and her husband. She knows that if she doesn’t take matters into her own hands, things won’t get better for her and they certainly won’t get any better for her children. Mildred writes to Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy hoping to enlist bigger guns in her fight and she gets them when the ACLU answers the call.

The dynamic between Richard and Mildred is what makes Loving such an interesting portrait of the interior of a marriage. Edgerton and Negga excel in their respective roles and hold the story together without over sentimentalizing or giving ham-fisted proclamations of civil liberties. The same cannot be said of Nick Kroll, who plays Bernard S. Cohen, the ACLU attorney assigned to see their case to the Supreme Court.

Kroll cannot resist winking at the audience or languishing a word when it comes dripping with significance, particularly his over-emphasis of “the United States Supreme Court.”

But a hammy performance and moments of dramatic contrivance cannot undo Nichols’ touching and tender depiction of a marriage. As in his standout film, Take Shelter, Nichols gets to the heart of what makes a marriage work, and how the two people involved must work together, even if that means working against the other’s wishes.

At times, Richard and Mildred look and act too incongruous to mesh, but in their vulnerable moments, they fit together like puzzle pieces and the image they create is one of domestic bliss. Loving was their name and it fit like a glove.

“There are some parts of the world that, once visited, get into your heart and won’t go. For me, India is such a place,” he once wrote. “When I first visited, I was stunned by the richness of the land, by its lush beauty and exotic architecture, by its ability to overload the senses with the pure, concentrated intensity of its colors, smells, tastes, and sounds. It was as if all my life I had been seeing the world in black and white and, when brought face-to-face with India, experienced everything re-rendered in brilliant technicolor.”

The restaurant is at once intimate and lively; laughter blends with the welcoming smells of cumin, coriander, red chili, bay, cinnamon and ghee for an atmosphere that is nothing but comforting.

The state of Rajasthan gave birth

A taste of the ‘Pink City’ One of the subcontinent’s most visited cities — and certainly a beloved place for Bellows — is Jaipur, the capitol of the state of Rajasthan in Northern India. Travel guides call it India’s most “flamboyant” city, the “epitome of magnificence and vibrancy.”

Filled with stately fortresses, grandiose palaces, tranquil temples and ornate mansions, it’s no wonder Jaipur is an adored tourist destination.

It is this city — often called the “Pink City” because of the color of stone used to build many of the city’s structures — for which Jaipur Indian Restaurant in downtown Boulder is named, and it works to live up to the splendor of its namesake.

Just off Walnut Street, a simultaneously sweet and spicy smell pulls patrons into Jaipur, where a gently flowing fountain greets them. Soft light illuminates a dining room decked in red and gold, simple mandalas adorning the upholstery of each seat. The setting evokes a sense of regality one might feel walking

to the concept of vegetarian restaurants, called Marwari Bhojnalaya after the people of that region who are strict vegetarians. The state was also heavily influenced by the Rajputs, predominately non-vegetarian people, who infused dishes of game meat into the region’s culinary repertoire: laal maas (mutton curry), safed maas (white lamb curry), khad khargosh (rabbit curry) and jungli maas (literally translated to wild game meat, typically made with mutton or goat, even lamb).

This juxtaposition of vegetarian and heavy-heavy dishes is exactly what Jaipur offers (not to mention vegan, gluten-free and halal options).

After polishing off a plate of crispy roti with just a hint of coriander, my dining companion and I decided

to go in opposite directions with our entrées: me ordering a dish of vegetarian curry, my companion ordering lamb mughlai.

The curry is thick and loaded with potato, carrot, peas, tomato, onion and ghee. The heat of the dish — ordered medium to prevent late-night heartburn for those of us inclined to deal with such — still packed a savory punch that didn’t distract from the flavor of the curry. Served over a bed of steaming white rice or over a warm piece of naan, the spice profile is perfect.

But perhaps most interesting was the lamb muhlai, a dish cooked in a thick sauce with cream and eggs. When it hits the palate, one has to work through a number of flavor characteristics: There is the undeniably earthy flavor of cumin, the bitter taste of tumeric, the floral and nutty tang of coriander and the hot aftertaste of chilies.

I doubt many dishes at Jaipur couldn’t be described as equally complex, as is the nature of Indian cuisine.

garlic. I boil peeled spuds in a big pan I inherited from Nanna by way of mom. I add the mashers to the sausage along with turkey broth, butter, salt, pepper, more butter and sage. The best moment is that first taste of the combination, which I will modestly state is among the best comfort foods on the planet and absolutely addictive, especially after it is scooped from the gobbler glistening with fat.

Last week, for no particular reason, I decided to ask other family members about the stuffing. I learned three things: 1) Many folks in my family don’t make or eat the stuffing at Thanksgiving but readers around the Lehndorff Family country do.

2) My Italian family makes the recipe differently from me.

3) I had the stuffing story and the recipe slightly wrong for 40 years.

After consulting with my cousin, Joanne, who talked to her 95-year-old mom, my amazing Aunt Josie, I learned more.

Nanna actually got the recipe from a French-Canadian woman named Rose and then it all clicked for me. Joanne reminded me that Papa wasn’t just a great butcher. He owned restaurants and apartment buildings and operated a limousine service. He also made wine in the basement, but I’m not supposed to mention that. Not bad for someone who never learned to read or write.

The following recipe is not one that I actually follow in my pre-Thanksgiving ritual. I just cook and taste. Feel free to use different meats (or none) and different spicing. You can mix Idaho bakers, red-skinned boilers and Yukon Golds, and leave the skins on if you like. The leftovers can be panfried as stuffing cakes and served with poached eggs or frozen to emerge as a fine ready-made side dish on a week night in February. Make it your own and let me know how it turns out.

On Thanksgiving I’ll be grateful to celebrate with my son, my sister and dear friends. I’ll toast my immigrant ancestors and pass the stuffing and gravy. For this and much more I am deeply grateful. I wish a happy Thanksgiving to one and all.

e handed me the taster and I watched as the fine nitrogen bubbles rushed up the beer to the surface, spreading out along the smooth, mousse-like foam of the head before cascading back down the side of the glass. The allure was undeniable, like watching Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers glide effortlessly along the floor. As I lifted the glass to my nose, coffee and chocolate sprung from the nitrogenated beer and danced up into my brain.

“It’s a peanut butter porter,” the representative from Liquid Mechanics yelled at me, raising his voice over the din of the music. “It’s experimental.”

“How come?” I asked, taking my first sip of the beer — a liquid peanut butter cup, velvety, smooth and delectable.

“It’s experimental because it doesn’t fit anywhere else,” the representative tried to convey before being overwhelmed by the thunder of Beats Antique. The band’s electronic fusion filled the tent, a woman spun acrobatics 15 feet in the air and a crowd of onlookers, sporting their best steampunk costumes, watched, applauded and raised a glass to their good fortune.

This is Nitro Fest in Longmont’s Roosevelt Park, and it’s a beautiful thing. My associate took little notice of the action, consumed instead with the deliciousness of Susan France the BBQ tofu provided by Longmont’s Samples World Bistro. I took another sip of the pillowy porter and let it all in.

Experimental indeed.

“Left Hand’s history and role with nitro goes back a bunch of years,” representative Josh Goldberg told me. “We’ve been highlighting and developing and really bringing to popularity the nitro concept.”

Nitro Fest is Goldberg’s way to get that word out, not just to drinkers, but brewers as well.

Featuring more than 30 different breweries — many of whom do not regularly nitrogenate their beer — Nitro Fest is like a scientist’s workshop in public.

“Some maybe dabble with it in their tasting room but never go to market,” Goldberg said. “We’re breaking down the walls of their tasting room and bringing them to Longmont.”

But some of those beers never even see the tasting room. Such as New Belgium’s Oscar Worthy Coffee, a beer that is only available to festivals like Nitro Fest.

“It’s a small, small batch,” Brian Pann from New Belgium Brewing said. “It’s only for special events.”

Pann went on to explain that only twentyish kegs of the brew exist, which is a crying shame considering how delicious the beer is. What starts with coffee and toast on the nose transforms into a pure sour on the palate with consistent quality all the way through.

Pann explained that the brewing process is too complex to produce en masse, but New Belgium likes to bring the goods to smaller festivals like this one. That is why one must come to Nitro Fest, to taste the hidden gems that these familiar haunts have to offer.

My associate handed me a glass of Freemont Brewing’s Dark Star Spice Wars Variation, a bourbon barrel aged imperial stout that has the heft of a nice scotch.

While we sip, the representative from Seattle explained that, “nitro beers are popular throughout our whole industry.”

It didn’t need to be said. The whole tent was teeming with people clamoring for nitro beer. With any luck, those experiments will make their way to a wider audience and, if the general population is anything like those costumed, thirsty individuals packed into the tent erected in Roosevelt Park, then nitro will be a thing of regularity.

We also made music and theater and art. We took care of each other, and we danced and loved and fucked. Embracing joy and art and sex in the face of fear and uncertainty made us feel better — it kept us sane — and it had the added benefit of driving our enemies crazy. They couldn’t understand how we could be anything but miserable, given the challenges we faced — their greed, their indifference, their bigotry — but we created and experienced joy despite their hatred and despite this awful disease. We turned to each other — we turned to our lovers and friends and sometimes strangers — and said, “Fuck them. Now fuck me.”

We didn’t eradicate HIV/AIDS, the disease that was sickening us then, but we fought it to a standstill and we may defeat it yet. The disease that now sickens our nation is different. We may never eradicate racism and sexism and hatred. But fight it we will. And don’t listen to anyone who tells you that music and dance and art and sex and joy are a distraction from the fight. They are a part of the fight.

he recent election yielded massive marijuana reform across the country as four states voted to legalize recreational marijuana and four legalized medical marijuana. Alongside the concurrent election of Mr. Trump, this means a lot of change for marijuana reform movements and the industry, almost certainly changing the legal viability of cannabis as we know it.

Although the marijuana industry is used to uncertainty, President Obama and his adminis- Courtesy of FEMA tration did offer certain assurances to states with legalized medical and recreational markets — as long as they followed certain best practices, the federal government promised not to interfere.

While Trump has been vocal in endorsing the right of states to legalize marijuana, some of his rumored cabinet members, like Chris Christie and Newt Gingrich, are vocally opposed and vow to revoke federal tolerance of state legalizations.

Regardless of what might happen at the federal level, the marijuana result on election day is good news for national reform and consumers, but as local lobbyist Shawn Coleman reminded Boulder City Council in an email last week, broader change affects local politics.

“It is essential to view marijuana regulation in Boulder in the proper context as part of an established and expanding national industry,” Coleman wrote.

been overly concerned with how the state ought to best position itself as part of a national market.

Instead they favored tight controls justified as protections against unknown public health and safety risks.

But now that 28 states have legal marijuana markets, business owners worry that the regulations are antiquated and too slow to change, acting as a threat to Colorado’s industry rather than as a protection to unrealized fears.

“Colorado is established as an industry leader, we are known for that, it is just accepted,” Andy Williams, CEO of Medicine Man, said prior to the election.

“But that leadership is going to whittle away rather quickly because of onerous regulatory restrictions in Colorado that are not really needed anymore. Investors and businesses will go to other states that don’t have those restrictions.”

He pointed to barriers like state rules that prohibit publicly owned companies in Colorado or city-level ordinances that limit the number of businesses an owner can have within a city’s limit. These, he said, pose artificial restrictions that will ultimately harm the industry and the state as revenue leaks to states with less restrictive regulations.

The most significant challenge to Colorado will undoubtedly come from California, the world’s eighth largest economy, which expects to bring in $6.46 billion in annual revenue by 2020 from cannabis alone.

In a June interview, Nancy Whiteman, Edibles Chair of the Cannabis Business Alliance, said, “[legalization in California] could have a big effect on Colorado. Many Colorado businesses cannot justify purchasing million dollar equipment when really you can only sell within your own state. Businesses in California will not have the same demand ceiling as us.”

“Think of this as a race, a race that is dependent on federal and state regulations, with everyone in the industry vying for position for, if and when the federal status of marijuana changes,” Williams said.

In economies more comparable to Colorado’s, like Massachusetts, Maine or Nevada, fledgling markets are not expected to pose direct competition, at least not in the foreseeable future. But it will likely take a bite out of the state’s marijuana tourism activity and revenue.

“We know that Boulder businesses rely on tourism business, and the success of California, Massachusetts and Nevada in particular pose a strong challenge to that business, as many tourists to Colorado have come from those states,” Coleman wrote to Boulder City Council.

The businesses that will struggle most will be the lesser talked about small businesses that hold the majority of ava ilable licenses and make up only a small percentage of revenue.

In most other industries you can chalk this up to natural selection mechanisms built into capitalism that allow the strong to survive while the weak expire. But when it comes to Colorado’s cannabis market, the fate of businesses is often determined by state and local regulations. “[Boulder] Council had a stated policy goal of a diverse marijuana industry in the city,” Coleman wrote. “While the success of no business can nor should be guaranteed or protected by municipal policy, now is the time to ensure that at minimum the barriers to success are removed, particularly for the smaller businesses whose entire investment is in Boulder.”

lthough state-wide marijuana legalization initiatives like the ones in California, Massachusetts, Florida and elsewhere got most of the attention, several Colorado communities voted on marijuana questions as well.

And in two cases the initiatives had national implications.

In Denver, it was announced a week after the election (November 15) that Initiative 300 had passed. The initiative allows certain existing businesses, including bars and restaurants, to obtain a city-issued permit to create marijuana “consumption areas.” Denver becomes the first major city in the country where marijuana could be used somewhere besides the privacy of one’s home.

Passage is only slightly less important for the marijuana legalization movement than the state legalization initiatives (eight out of nine of which passed), because allowing marijuana to

be legally consumed in public places is a major step toward genuinely making marijuana co-equal with alcohol as a legal recreational drug.

As of Tuesday morning, Initiative 300 had a 20,055 vote lead, with only 10,000 to 12,000 ballots remaining to be counted. The measure was support-

ed by 53.3 percent of those who voted on the issue.

But while Initiative 300 is a major step to normalizing marijuana use, it is also a tentative one. The initiative creates a four-year pilot program, which would terminate at the end of 2020 unless the Denver City Council makes

it permanent. And in six months the council would have the option of repealing or making changes to the ordinance with a two-thirds majority.

Moreover, a business seeking a permit for a marijuana consumption area will have to obtain the backing of a local registered neighborhood organization or a business improvement district.

Longtime marijuana legalization activist Mason Tvert said he thought Initiative 300 “is really going to set an example” nationally.

“This is a pilot program,” he said at a press conference. “This is something the City can experiment with for the next couple of years and either adopt it permanently or make tweaks to it or decide to take a different approach.”

One motivation behind the initiative was to provide more places for tourists to use pot.

The marijuana consumption areas created under Initiative 300 could be either indoors or outdoors. Indoor areas would allow vaping or edibles but not smoking, while smoking would be allowed in the outdoor areas. Users would have to bring their own pot; sales would still be confined to dispensaries.

In other words marijuana still wouldn’t be on an equal footing with alcohol, but the initiative is still a big

step in the right direction.

Unlike Initiative 300, the ballot initiatives in Pueblo would have been big steps in the wrong direction, had they passed. Fortunately, they didn’t.

In the City of Pueblo, Ballot Question 300 would have banned marijuana dispensaries and grows within City limits. It was crushed with almost 59 percent of the voters turning it down.

In Pueblo County, Ballot Issue 200 would have shut down more than 100 grows, 30 processing facilities and 10 dispensaries. Nearly 56 percent of the voters rejected it.

The victories are important because the initiatives represented the first serious attempt to roll back legal marijuana in a state that had voted for it.

It was also important because Pueblo County is one of the few places where legal marijuana is grown outdoors instead of exclusively under lights.

The initiative did attract some national media attention, including a piece on CBS’s Sixty Minutes that verged on reefer madness.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Nov. 8, Jim Parco, a spokesman for pro-legalization organization Growing Pueblo’s Future, said, “We were the first to legalize, regulate and tax adultuse retail marijuana, and now, the first to decisively defeat prohibitionists in a do-over vote.”

He also announced plans to create a national marijuana museum in Pueblo.

More than 150 new marijuanarelated businesses employing several thousand workers have been opened in the county since legalization.

They all must have just misspelled their own names and wrote Mike Pence by accident.

Imagine that!

Well, golly gee, I guess Mike Pence doesn’t care about women as much as we thought...

Planned Parenthood confirmed to the Star that they’ve received over 160,000 donations, 12.5 percent in Pence’s name. We wonder if that’ll send a message to the future POTUS and V-POTUS, about where America’s loyalty lies. But they’re probably busy arguing which shade of orange to paint the White House.

Facebook received fervent backlash at the amount of fake news that popped up on people’s feeds, masquerading as actual news. When the fact that these fake news stories could have influenced the election was pointed out to Mark Zuckerberg he replied, “Na uh!”

Facebook finally came around to its senses. Joined by Google, the two media giants have pledged to take a stand and try to eliminate the problem.
