Our flawed election system Last week’s election illustrates, yet again, how our broken voting system makes a mockery of the democratic ideal. No, I’m not talking about union/ corporate campaign spending. Nor is the problem lobbyists, or low voter turnout or an uneducated populace. It’s not even the electoral college.

The problem is plurality voting, which is a fancy term for “one person, one vote; most votes wins.” Yes, everybody from your eighth-grade civics teacher to Schoolhouse Rock taught you that this is democracy, and we fought the British for exactly this right.

But plurality is only one form of voting. Sadly, it’s also pretty much the most flawed system possible, with all its shortcomings stemming from the fact that outcomes are subject to “split votes,” meaning that two or more candidates divide a block of voters, enabling another, potentially less-popular candidate to win.

The tactics used to combat split voting are what taint democracy.

Candidates who are not nominees of the two major parties (e.g. Ralph Nader) are under tremendous pressure to not run.

When they do run, their supporters are under pressure to not vote for them.

Because people vote strategically rather

than from their hearts, the results misrepresent actual sentiment. And those who do vote their conscience are left knowing they may have helped their least favorite choice win the election. (e.g. George Bush in 2000.)

ere in my home state of Texas, we’re suffering from withdrawal pains.

This is not caused by our addiction to alcohol or drugs — but to plain water. And to make our pain worse, it’s not the people of Texas who are hooked on a destructive water habit — it’s the bone-headed executives and greed-headed investors in coal-fired and nuclear-powered plants that generate electricity.

And don’t laugh at Texas, for the same corporate addiction might be draining the fresh water supplies where you live. Question: which uses more water — your washing machine chugging out one load of laundry, or the power plant that provides the few kilowatts of electricity to heat the water for that one load? No contest. The power plant uses as much as 10 times more water to make the electricity than you use to fill your machine.

And like any organization, from a corporation to a union to the State Department, these parties are motivated first and foremost to perpetuate their own power. Which is why Washington politics often seems more like a scorecard between the two parties than an engine of sound policy. We don’t have a democracy; we have a duopoly.

Why do we let this happen? We would take to the streets armed if two private corporations picked our leaders; why do we allow two political parties to maintain this duopoly? Is it because we’re permitted to work for them for free, put stickers on our cars, and go to their conventions? (As an aside, Exxon would be thrilled if you did these things for them, too.) Why do we let these two nearly omnipotent (and, by the way, tax-exempt) organizations decide who gets to be on the ballot?

Wrong ethanol to support I’m amazed to learn that in this economic climate, Congress is considering legislation that would fill the pockets of the U.S. ethanol industry to the tune of $30 billion over the next five years, and extend the 54 cents-pergallon tariff on imported ethanol.

The U.S. ethanol industry is already the world’s largest, producing more than 12 billion gallons of corn ethanol per year. It benefits from generous government mandates that guarantee profits for years to come.

Americans have spent $45 billion since 1980 to grow this industry. Does it really need more of our hard earned money?

The subsidies and trade barriers also limit our access to clean energy sources like sugarcane ethanol.

Sugarcane ethanol is an advanced, lowcarbon fuel that could help the U.S. cut dependence on Middle East oil, save money at the pump and improve the environment, according to both the Environmental Protection Agency and the California Air Resources Board.

Unfortunately, it’s nearly unavailable in the U.S., thanks to Congress.

As the U.S. emerges from the greatest recession in a generation, we deserve a Congress that chooses sound, stable and secure economic and energy policies which are rooted in fair, openmarket competition, and benefit Americans at the pump. Congress should let our current ethanol policies expire on Dec. 31, saving taxpayers $30 billion over the next five years when we need it most.

you as is your own shadow, as are many others, but Mr. President, you must proceed to fight, sir! I, we, understand that this is apparently not your nature, that you are, indeed, far more cerebral and intellectually well-balanced in your theoretical approach and analysis.

But this, my friend, is a battle. A down and dirty political fight. And if you’re not prepared to meet this very real challenge in a very real way, how do you expect us to “fight back,” as I saw you asking us in one of your ads, when you, sir, are not? It doesn’t work that way. I still think you can take a punch, but, dammit, man, I need to know that you can really throw one, as well. You’re a peace-loving humanitarian Hawaiian in your heart, no doubt, but it’s gonna take some Muhammad Ali kind of Chicago maneuvering and a lot less of this constant capitulation to people that could care about nothing more than your destruction. Why can you not see this?

Iran’s war on Israel As Tehran continues to develop its weapons arsenal, the Iranian leadership constantly reminds the international community that it wants to see an end to Israel’s existence.

Iran is the world’s largest statesponsor of terrorism and operates through various proxies, notably Hezbollah, Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad. Iran-backed terrorists in Gaza have fired at least 170 rockets and other weapons at Israel so far this year — despite the fact that it’s been five years since there was a single settler or settlement in Gaza.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps-Qods Force trains troops around the world and covertly supplies weapons to advance “Iranian interests” — including killing Americans.

Imagine if they had nuclear weapons?

The United States should press its allies to enact a new round of sanctions aimed at isolating the Iranian Central Bank, which finances and facilitates the Islamic republic’s nuclear program.

All options must remain on the table should sanctions fail.

Make the pill free

t’s going to be a battle anyway. A panel of experts meets this month to advise the federal government on what kind of preventative care should be provided to women under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (PPACA).

On the table is a proposal to include contraception.

Sen. Barbara Mikulski, a Democrat and Maryland’s top vote-getter in last week’s election, wrote the women’s health amendment to the PPACA. She told the Associated Press that intent of the amendment was to ensure that contraception was included as part of women’s preventative health care. Under PPACA preventative care is supposed to be free.

But religious conservatives, in their never-ending quest to control the private lives of others, aren’t likely to agree that birth control counts as preventative medicine. Pregnancy is not a disease, they say, and therefore should not be included as preventative health care.

“It would simply be inappropriate and indefensible for [the Department of Health and Human Services] to require group health plans and health insurance issuers to cover contraceptives, sterilizations, and drugs or devices that induce the expulsion of the human embryo before or after implantation, including the recently approved drug ulipristal acetate [ella, a new form of emergency contraception] or levonorgestrel (Plan B), under the pretext of ‘preventative care and screenings,’” wrote John M. Haas, president of the National Catholic

Bioethics Center, in a letter to the Department of the Treasury, the Department of Labor and the Department of Health and Human Services.

Haas expanded on his position in an AP interview when he called pregnancy a “healthy condition.”

Much of his argument is based on the view that changing a woman’s body so that it refuses to accept a fertilized egg is the same thing as causing an abortion, a view shared by many Protestant fundamentalists. This is absurd. As the recent vote on Colorado’s Amendment 62 implies, Americans believe that any drug or device that prevents a woman from ever having a positive pregnancy test is contraception, not abortion. But that’s a topic for another column.

The question before the panel is whether contraception improves women’s health and ought to be considered preventative health care. And the answer is an overwhelming “yes.”

To hear Haas talk about pregnancy, you’d think that bearing children comes as naturally and easily to women as producing apples does to an apple tree.

Women blossom into fertility, are inseminated and bear fruit.

But pregnancy comes with a host of risks and potential health impacts ranging from the mild — nausea, back ache, insomnia — to the potentially fatal — toxemia, HELLP syndrome, postpartum hemorrhage. Childbirth is the leading see CONTRACEPTION Page 8

cause of death among women of childbearing age in developing countries, and most women in developed countries choose to give birth in hospitals precisely because the process entails some risk to them and their babies.

Further, many women emerge from pregnancy with unhealthy changes to their bodies that are permanent or require costly surgical or medical treatment — gestational diabetes that didn’t go away; painful hemorrhoids requiring surgery; bladder problems; uterine prolapse; a tendency toward blood clots; fistula; depression.

No, pregnancy is not a disease, but it can initiate many health problems that are. Contraception is preventative medicine because it enables women to limit the number of times their bodies are placed at risk.

“There is clear and incontrovertible evidence that family planning saves lives and improves health,” Dr. David Grimes, one of a handful of U.S. physicians Board-certified in both obstetrics and gynecology and in preventive medicine, told AP. “Contraception rivals immunization in dollars saved for every dollar invested. Spacing out children allows for optimal pregnancies and optimal child rearing. Contraception is a prototype of preventive medicine.”

This is where Haas would say women can always use natural family planning, timing periods of abstinence to coincide with their fertile days of the month. But most women don’t want to play reproductive roulette and prefer to use a form of contraception that enables them to have sex whenever they choose.

Haas and his fellow religious conservatives aren’t trying to hurt women, though certainly a world without contraception would result in many thousands more birth injuries and maternal deaths each year. They’re simply invested in a religious dogma that binds women to reproduction. They need to believe that pregnancy is benign — or their “theology of the body” crumbles.

But public policy needs to be based on reality, not faith. So while Haas is welcome to his religious point of view, let’s hope the panel skips past the culture war rhetoric and focuses solely on what’s good for women.

One thing is certain: having bushels of babies isn’t.

n Sunday, Nov. 7, an eclectic group of students, therapists, artists and health care practitioners gathered at the Draft House in downtown Boulder for the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) fall gala. The crowd of roughly 100 people listened as Rick Doblin, founder of MAPS, discussed the potential of psychedelic drugs to treat conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), drug dependence, and anxiety and depression associated with chronic disease and end-of-life issues.

“It’s not that psychedelics are the only way,” Doblin said.

“They’re tools that speed things up and allow a person to make changes in a supportive context that they haven’t been able to make before. We’re hoping that we can acknowledge the risks and honestly discuss and prove the benefits as well.”

Since Doblin founded MAPS in 1986, the nonprofit has developed and funded clinical trials with different psychedelics, such as MDMA, ibogaine and LSD. They are currently focusing their efforts on MDMA for its potential as a treatment for PTSD, especially among war veterans.

“The most senior psychiatrist in the army from the Department of Defense called me to find out about MDMA for PTSD,” Doblin said. “Things do change over time. If you can at least engage in a dialogue, people may start to listen.”

According to Brian Wallace, director of field development, MAPS functions mainly as a pharmaceutical development company in accordance with the guidelines of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

“Our relationship with the FDA is more like a collaboration than anything

else,” Wallace said. “There’s no resistance on their part; they just want to see the science.”

During the weekend, MAPS, based out of Santa Cruz, Calif., hosted numerous events in an effort to educate and inform the public of their mission. The events included a talk by Doblin at CU Boulder, the MAPS Mile High Marijuana Summit in Denver, and an MDMA-Assisted Psychotherapy Workshop in Boulder. MAPS also partnered with the Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP), an international network of students working to end the war on drugs.

“There’s a huge shift happening right now, and MAPS has a very special niche in the greater drug policy reform movement,” Wallace said. “We like to say that we’re in the midst of a psychedelic research renaissance. There’s more research going on currently with psychedelic drugs than there has been in the past 40 years.”

Doblin is hopeful that within the next 10 years, MDMA will be a legal prescription drug for use by licensed medical practitioners and therapists.

“We’re now in a place where our society is in some ways increasingly desperate,” he said. “Last year the government spent $5.5 billion on disability payments to 275,000 veterans and it’s growing every year. That’s an enormous financial and emotional burden. It’s up to us to be more compassionate and understanding of the concerns of people who are resisting drug reform. We have to really reach out to them and to the enormous reservoirs of fear that have been produced by the massive drug war propaganda machine.

Momentum is building, and I think things are more ripe for change than they’ve ever been.”

Goddamn hippies Speaking of, did you hear about the man who was kicked out of a church near St. Louis last week for dressing like Jesus?

According to media reports, Neal Thompson has been dressing up like Jesus and going to a different church each week to spread the good word. But when he showed up at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Des Peres, Mo., he was not just turned away, but they called the cops on him.

Kind of makes you glad we’re just stuck with Seth Brigham, doesn’t it?

Thompson don’t talk too good neither, unlike Jesus.

He was quoted by Fox affiliate KTVI describing this exchange with a deacon: “And I said, ‘Well this ain’t right, you guys ain’t treating me right.’ He said, ‘We’re gonna call the police.’ I said, ‘Well call them, I don’t care. Call them.’ So I sat down and the next thing I know four or five police showed up.”

And then there is the kicker: “Oh I forgive them, I forgive them,” Thompson said of the unwelcoming church-goers.

A printed conviction Medical marijuana dispensaries have faced a tough series of regulations during the past year, and some are struggling to keep up with the new fees levied by cashstrapped state and local governments.

A Nov. 6 piece in the Daily Camera titled “Boulder medical marijuana shops struggle with laws” detailed some local businesses that are grappling, in various degrees, to pull together the cash necessary to bring their shops up to code. But we’re sure they didn’t appreciate this subtle jab, as written by reporter Erica Meltzer: “Industry observers say many mom-and-pop operators have sold out to new investors with backgrounds in business and access to capital. Those who haven’t filed for new licenses may melt back into the black market from which they came.”

Now what could this mean? Dispensary owners who can’t afford the new license fees were all black-market drug dealers prior to Amendment 20? That if dispensary owners can’t apply for licenses, they will resort to selling their wares on street corners and dark alleys? Black markets are illegal. We bet some dispensary owners might object to the implication that they will operate illegally if regulations become too onerous.

It’s journalism 101: Don’t let your language convict or implicate people in a crime; that’s the job of police, judges and juries. Come on, Camera; you’re better than this.

Alien crème and space bros We get lots of press releases about upcoming events, but this one is simply out of this world.

Here’s how it begins: “UFOs, and the people in them, are engaged on a spiritual mission to ease humanity’s lot. BCAP bigger and better The Boulder County AIDS Project recently opened a new Longmont Service Center at 515 Kimbark St., Ste. 100.

A bilingual HIV/AIDS medical case manager will be available at the new office four days a week to provide services to HIV-positive residents of Longmont and east Boulder County.

The new agency is more conveniently located than BCAP’s previous Longmont office, is wheelchair accessible, and is close to public transportation. The agency also plans to offer a food pantry for clients at the location.

“Our Longmont clients have had to travel to Boulder to access food from our BCAP Market,” says Ana Hopperstad, BCAP executive director.

“We are excited to have the opportunity to provide nutritious, high-protein foods necessary to support health in individuals who are living with severely compromised immune systems in Longmont.”

Trim your own tree Golden Gate Canyon State Park is now offering a limited number of permits for cutting a holiday tree in selected areas of the park. The permits, which cost $20, can be purchased for either Dec. 4 or Dec. 5.

There are tree-cutting areas for both four-wheel- and two-wheel-drive vehicles, and some hiking is required.

The permit is good regardless of rain or snow, and no refunds will be given for bad weather.

The tree cutting permits will be available for purchase in person at the park visitor center, located at 92 Crawford Gulch Rd., 15 miles west of Golden, or by phone, using a credit card for payment, by calling 303-5823707. Permits will be sold from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, while supplies last.

Visitors must collect their permits from the visitor center on the permit date, prior to cutting their tree.

Permit holders are allowed one tree per permit. A valid park pass, either a $7 daily pass or an annual pass, is also required for each vehicle.

The passes can be purchased at the visitor center.

Trees must be cut with hand tools, such as a handsaw or an axe.

Chainsaws and power saws are strictly prohibited. Christmas trees that meaBoulder Weekly

sure a maximum of 15 feet tall or have a maximum trunk diameter of six inches may be cut. Tree selections include Douglas fir, ponderosa pine, lodgepole pine and Rocky Mountain juniper.

By cutting a Christmas tree, the permit holders will assist Golden Gate Canyon State Park in thinning overcrowded and dense vegetation, which will improve the overall forest health and reduce the impacts of future wildfires.

Accessibility conference on tap The University of Colorado at Boulder is hosting a conference this week aimed at improving access to the Internet for people with disabilities.

Don’t fret when the bed bugs bite

I

t took DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane), the “atomic bomb of pesticides,” to reduce infestations in this country to a level that a couple of generations have grown up not quite knowing what “Don’t let the bed bugs bite” means.

But DDT was banned in 1972, and the primitive little insect species called cimex lectularius is surprisingly resistant to anything less lethal.

Bed bugs have been making a stealthy comeback ever since. In June, the National Pest Management Association reported a 71 percent increase in infestations since 2001.

Denver is listed among the U.S. cities that have been most affected by the return of the pesky little bloodsuckers.

The resurgence was greatly helped by the insects’ habit of hitching a ride in travelers’ luggage and shipping cargo from abroad. They can live up to a year between meals, so the lack of dinner service in the meantime is no problem.

Because of these habits, hotels and stores have been the businesses especially hit hard. But the pests are turning up more frequently these days in residences, as well. In August 2009, the University of Colorado at Boulder spent about $50,000 on special heat-

radiation equipment to eradicate infestations in its campus housing (see story below).

Bed bugs are apple-seed size, wingless and brownishred as well-fed adults. All they need is an inert warmblooded body and a few minutes of quiet feeding before they retreat to a sheltered area to rest and make more bed bugs. Hence their fondness for beds, and sometimes our sofas and sleeping bags.

You may never know what hit you until itchy red welts appear on your skin. By that time, the insects have been briskly reproducing on the premises.

hen it comes to bed bugs, the University of Colorado at Boulder was one of the first campuses around the country to invest in a high-tech system for eliminating the pests — and, in typical Boulder style, the system does not involve any harmful chemicals or pesticides.

Actually, it cooks them.

As it turns out, the $50,000 Thermal Remediation system from TEMP-AIR that CU purchased in August 2009 is paying off, since the system is now in fairly high demand. Officials say they typically use it twice a week to address a rising number of reports of bed bugs on campus.

During the first nine months that CU had the heating system — which kills bed bugs by heating rooms to more than 120 degrees — the campus performed 31 treatments. In the past five months alone, the system has been used 36 times, which CU officials attribute primarily to students’ return to campus housing in August.

That’s because travel is most often cited as the aggravating factor in bed bugs arriving in Boulder County. They hitch rides from other areas of the country that have been especially hard-hit, like New York City and Chicago.

Yes, bed bugs are in Boulder County. And, no, the public health department is not reacting the way it usually does to plagues of mosquitoes, fleas, ticks and similar biting pests. That’s because bed bugs are, by comparison, relatively benign little vampires.

“They’re definitely a nuisance, but we’re not keeping track of any reports of infestations,” says Marshall Lipps, environmental health specialist for Boulder County public health. “Bed bugs are not known to carry diseases.

Even if someone developed an infection

or had a mild allergic reaction, it would be a secondary effect from the scratching.”

Infestation has nothing to do with sanitation, although removing clutter helps greatly in reducing hiding places.

Their detection is most obvious in your bed — not so much the unwelcome guests themselves but tiny spots of blood and insect poop. But don’t stop there.

Get a strong flashlight and inspect the mattress and foundation, particularly under the cloth covering on the bottom of the foundation, and wherever there are cracks and seams. Look behind the headboard (even if fastened to the wall), under the bed and at the flooring. Check behind pictures, books, light-switch covers and loose wallpaper.

Take a good look throughout closets and into the holes that wires and pipes travel through. Scrutinize baseboards, moldings, furniture and appliances.

Don’t forget your pets’ bedding and hang-out places. Flea and tick collars, by the way, don’t work on bed bugs.

“Bed bugs are species-specific parasites,” says Nancy Bureau, associate veterinarian at Alpine Hospital for Animals in Boulder. “That means they

At the time, CU was one of only about a dozen campuses in the nation that had purchased the TEMP-AIR product.

Now, when the presence of bed bugs is confirmed in a CU dorm room or, as has been more common, the university’s family housing apartments, affected residents take a hot shower to remove any eggs or bugs from their body. Then they gather the few belongings they want to take with them and place those in another, smaller heating system called a PackTite, so that they can be decontaminated. (CU has three of those $500 units, acquired at around the same time as the TEMPAIR system.) The residents then spend a night or two at a friend’s place while a crew of CU employ-

CU officials urge students who suspect they have bed bugs — tell-tale signs include red bite marks on the skin or tiny blood spots on the sheets — to report it immediately, to nip the problem in the bud and avoid an infestation. There is nothing to be ashamed of, they say, since bed bugs are not a sign that you are unclean or live in an unsanitary environment.

“There’s a reluctance sometimes for people to report, because of emotions or a stigma or something like that,” says Craig Schuck, manager of maintenance and grounds operations for CU’s housing and dining services. “But there are fourand five-star hotels that experience the problem.”

Ed von Bleichert, CU’s integrated pest management coordinator, agrees.

“This is not an indication of poor sanitary conditions,” he says. “It’s not like cockroaches or ants.

There is still that stigma, but I think people are starting to get over that.”

prefer a particular blood temperature — human. But bed bugs will hide in animal bedding, and they’ll use animals to get around. They’ll bite dogs, cats and other warm-blooded animals if, say, you go on vacation and leave them behind.

Or there’s so much competition that some of them have to turn to the animals.”

If you detect bugs on your pets, the pests can be removed with a flea comb and a flea bath product that is appropriate for the animal.

Once you’ve confirmed the presence of bed bugs in your home or business, you’ll have to act fast. (Avoid any retail product that claims to be a bed-bug repellent or eradicator.)

Here are the steps recommended by the Boulder County Public Health Department and from a website recommended by Marshall Lipps called www. bedbugger.com.

If your mattress and box spring are worth saving, get mattress covers from a moving company and encase each for at least a year. Trapped insects will suffocate.

Dry clean or wash bedding and curtains in hot water with detergent and bleach. Dry in the sun or a hot dryer.

Wash clothing and other linens in hot water. Dry in the sun or a hot dryer.

If you’ve been traveling and not sure if you’ve brought back any unwelcome guests, wash all clothing immediately and put all the other travel items in a sealed trash bag.

In areas where you find or suspect bugs, get a stiff scrub brush to loosen any eggs from surfaces. Put a new bag in your vacuum cleaner and vacuum all areas thoroughly, especially where there are cracks, crevices, holes and loose wallpaper. Seal the vacuum bag in a plastic bag and put it in an outdoor

trash can.

High heat treatment is very effective, but should only be done by a professional. You can easily set fire to your premises, otherwise.

Dry vapor steam cleaning will kill both bugs and eggs on contact, with less risk of encouraging mold growth.

You can rent a steam-cleaning machine, but be sure to do the homework so you can do it safely and effectively. This method is especially recommended if you’re hiring a professional pest control operator to follow up.

Regardless of claims to the contrary, there are no effective “green” pesticides, and it will take at least a few hours for a licensed, bonded professional pest control operator to do the job.

The best way to keep bed bugs at bay is to be proactive. And if you’ve gone through the trouble of getting rid of them you’ll have to stay vigilant.

Caulk and seal around any holes where pipes and wire come through floors and walls. Fill the cracks around baseboards, molding, flooring, window frames, etc.

When traveling, take along a flashlight and a big trash bag. Once you get to your destination, put your luggage in the bag and set it farthest away from the bed while you check the room with the flashlight. If you see bugs, alert the management immediately and ask for a new room — and not next door. Check the new room, too.

Any clothing, linens or furnishings you purchase may be infested with bug eggs you might not see. If it can’t be put in a hot dryer as soon as you bring it home, don’t bring it inside until you’ve checked it thoroughly, vacuumed it and disinfected or steamcleaned it.

Von Bleichert says the heating process can take anywhere from six to 12 hours, depending on the size of the space. Initially, bed bugs come out of hiding when the temperature starts to rise, because they are attracted to warmth, given their blood-sucking propensities.

“They think it’s their next meal time,” Schuck says.

But then it gets a bit too hot for them, and at the end of the treatment, crews vacuum up the carcasses.

Von Bleichert says there is no pesticide registered in the U.S. that can kill Boulder Weekly

both adults and eggs, so the use of chemicals would just be a Band-Aid. Furthermore, adds Schuck, people who try to solve their bed-bug problem with a can of Raid are probably just going to drive the bugs away to an adjacent housing unit, exacerbating their spread.

He recommends using www.bedbug registry.com to see whether a hotel or other establishment you plan to visit has had past infestations.

Marcie Tucker, assistant director of customer relations for housing and dining services, says CU has gotten calls from other universities around the country inquiring about CU’s approach and the TEMP-AIR system.

“We are definitely at the forefront,” she says.

Feed your local economy, your tummy, your yard

T

he question came up about a year and a half ago among the advanced permaculture design students taught by Marco Lam as part of Naropa University’s environmental studies department.

How can people be encouraged to support their local economy in a collaborative effort?

Then came the idea for the Gaian, a “local currency” good at participating shops in Boulder.

As an alternative to the regular U.S. dollar, the Gaian creates a closed micro-economy of local businesses.

Consumers participate by buying Gaian coins and using them at participating retailers. Business owners participate by accepting Gaians — at a discount for customers — and exchanging them with other businesses in the network. Consumers can buy $50 worth of Gaians for $45.

So far, the Gaian has been circulating within a small network of friends and business associates.

“Now, the students are researching how to best take this more public,” Lam says. “They’re educating people, reaching out to more businesses and possible partners.”

The goal is to launch the program

around the beginning of the new year.

Better yet, leaves are great material to start a compost pile or bin. Or just rake all that crunchy goodness off your lawn and spread it on open ground, under trees and plants, where they’ll be fed, hydrated and protected from temperature extremes. Add a layer of newspaper for weed suppression.

Book of rhymes F or the first decade of its existence, rap music was deemed a fad, another pop culture trend to soon fade like disco and pet rocks. After rap music defied the prediction of its demise, its musicality came into question. Was it real music?

After selling billions of albums, topping radio play and dance club charts, getting Grammy recognition and having rap artists inducted into the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame, there’s no question that it is music.

Now comes into question the literary validity of a rapper’s lyrics. Are they words in poetic form entrenched in the traditions of oratory expression and story-telling or just a bunch of gibberish from people who grew up in poverty-stricken neighborhoods in America’s major cities? According to the new book, The Anthology of Rap, it may be a bit of both. Authors and professors Adam Bradley and Andrew DuBois collected the lyrics of more than 300 rap songs from across its 30-year history for

The Anthology of Rap with hopes that the lyrical contributions of rap music could be recognized for their artistic integrity.

“Hip-hop doesn’t need an anthology to make it valuable,” says Bradley, an assistant professor of English at the University of Colorado at Boulder. “People have been listening to rap music and participating in hip-hop culture for decades without having a lyrical bible to go to. For those of us who love the culture, we have it in our heads. You know what we mean when we say ‘I came in the door, I said it before’ or ‘visualizing the realism of life and actuality.’

What we did think, though, is that rap represented a kind of cutting-edge poetry, a public poetry that manifested itself in song but was grounded in the roots of what made people create in the first place — rhythm and rhyme and the play of language. lect this material and preserve it; that preservation is a main component. I’ve been noticing that even being at CU, how many of the undergraduates today aren’t familiar with some of the great lyrics of the past, and these are hip-hop lovers!

For a lot of my students, hip-hop begins with Tupac and Biggie in the mid-’90s.”

The idea for the book came to Bradley and DuBois while they were working in the Ph.D. program at Harvard University. Bradley, who grew up listening to hip-hop in Salt Lake City, was studying under such luminary scholars as Henry Louis Gates and Cornel West, while DuBois, whose first hip-hop concert was watching Whodini and The Fat Boys open for New Edition in Huntsville, Ala., in the early ’80s, was studying under well-known poetry critic Helen Vendler. The book has an indepth foreword on the oral tradition of “rapping” by Gates, a comprehensive introduction on what rap music is (along with the book’s methodology), and afterwords by rappers Chuck D and Common. The book breaks down rap’s history via lyrics into four periods, from 1978 to 2010. In addition, the authors provide a brief bio of each artist featured.

“We thought it was strange that there wasn’t an anthology,” says DuBois, an associate professor of English at the University of Toronto at Scarborough. “It seems like something that would have

existed 10 years ago. But nothing did exist quite like that, so we kind of talked about how there should be one. Then, about our last year of grad school, we just sat down and started to map out what a book like that should look like.”

The first thing the two rap fans did was create what they dubbed “the greatest mixtape in hip-hop history,” which featured 500 of rap music’s greatest songs, with an emphasis on lyricism. They passed the list of songs around to an advisory board of hip-hop scholars, authors, journalists and cultural critics and asked what songs they would remove or add for a lyrical anthology. The list of songs ballooned to more than 1,200. With space for only 300 songs in the book, there was a lot of cutting to do.

“The cuts were one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done in my life,” Bradley says. “It was so painful. Part of that meant deciding, are we simply not going to talk about certain things or are we going to talk about everything with mediocre attention? What we decided and ended up doing is the things we would talk about, we would talk about well. So if we give you a section on Tupac, we’re going to give you a good selection across his career; we’re going to give four or five songs, minimum. But that may mean we’d have to not talk about somebody else. We had to make some tough decisions. Also, the permis-

sions made decisions for us. There were certain instances where we couldn’t contact copyright owners, no matter how long we tried. It was painful to pull things, especially at the very last minute, because of rights.”

Some of the items pulled because of permission issues included lyrics from well-known and respected artists like Outkast and Redman and classic hiphop songs like Queen Latifah’s “U.N.I.T.Y.” and Big Pun’s “Twinz.”

“On a personal level, out of all the groups in the book, the one that’s geographically closest to where I grew up was Outkast,” DuBois says. “And man, that was a killer [to not have them included in the book]. I felt like I had been kicked in the stomach.”

Then there was the transcription of the lyrics. It’s no secret that understanding every word a rapper says in a song can be difficult. Bradley and DuBois admit in the book’s introduction that “not even hip-hop insiders are likely to understand everything in every song.”

The rigorous task of transcribing every word from all 300 songs was such a chore that they even contacted artists to confirm lyrics in certain songs. But Bradley admits that there are still some errors in the book.

“We have a website for the book, Anthologyofrap.com, where we’ll be soliciting responses from readers and cor-

rections as well,” Bradley says. “I’ve already noticed some small errors that got in there, and we’ve spent months proofreading it. It’s just bound to happen. So we want to get the transcriptions, which we think are good, to be perfect, if possible.”

Aside from the small percentage of errors and the absence of just a few classic hip-hop tracks, The Anthology of Rap is a scholarly and thorough case for rap lyrics to be looked at with the same esteem as other literary art.

“We want them to see the historical range,” DuBois says. “That’s the purpose of having the book arranged in these chronological sections, so that you can actually see the chronological development in rap. Just to see the range and the density and the sophistication and variety of rap lyrics. There are people who have this false dichotomy in their head about ‘well to say that song lyrics are poetry is over-intellectualizing them and therefore diminishes their street credibility.’ I don’t believe that’s true. Jay-Z, in his new book, is trying to make the case that song lyrics are poetry; they’re part of the same family tree. We just want to show some of the beautiful features in it. Not just the beauty, but the harshness, too, within the historical development and poetic sophistication, density and variety.”

Can Mike Gordon stand still?

hen we thanked Phish bassist Mike Gordon for taking a few minutes to chat us up last week on his day off, he

corrects us.

“Heh. No days off this year,” Gordon chuckles.

Well, we suppose a real day off for Gordon wouldn’t include doing any interviews, but Phish had just wrapped up its early fall tour with a Halloween gig in Atlantic City, N.J., and it was a day or two before he headed back out for a stretch with his own band.

The days are sliding by like a blur.

Gordon talks a little about stepping out of the exquisite chaos of a Phish tour and into his own gig.

“I knew it would be difficult this time.

Usually it takes at least a week for me to get to feeling human again after a tour,” he says. “It doesn’t even have to be a grueling tour. … You just get revved up from playing and staying up late and traveling and the intensity that the music requires. But on top of that, I had my album come out and all these side projects having to do with the album — creative projects, videos, bonus tracks — and then, Phish had a Halloween album, which was a double album, so that took a lot of practice, and getting ready for this tour at the same time. And, having family time, like my daughter just turned 2 years old.

“So, I was just so busy, I knew this was going to be a difficult week. A day or two ago, I was just pulling my hair out.”

While still bearing the trademark quirkiness and dual-suspension bottom-end bounce that has characterized his mainline oeuvre since his earliest days in Phish, Gordon’s new CD Moss comes across a bit more like a bassist’s album than The Green Sparrow, his 2008 solo effort. Recorded during Phish’s hiatus and after a year of relative creative downtime for Gordon, Sparrow tended to slide more toward an organic, band-collective vibe. Moss, on the other hand, was a project that cobbled together bits and pieces of ideas extending back years, including extra material from the Sparrow sessions and bass-drum jams since.

It’s looser in some respects but surprisingly detailed.

Gordon recorded it in a short month he managed to steal from Phish’s busy post-reunion schedule.

We told Gordon we really liked “Get Away,” with its drowsy horn-section accents and almost late-period Steely Dan vibe, a kind of last-call lament for the guy at the end of the bar, with Gordon’s bass dropping into broad harmonic bottoms here, standing up and tiptoeing across the lachrymose chill there. there’s “The Void,” a sort of mid-tempo narcoleptic flight of fancy that dissolves into rich vocal harmonics set off against glistening dissonances before submerging into a grey-noise sonic murk, bobbing to the surface again with a kind of toy-piano coda, all of it born (logically in Gordon’s vaguely Fellini-esque musical world, maybe unexpectedly for the rest of us) from a series of cyclic and semi-technical bass runs.

Seriously. What the hell is he doing in there?

“I’m not sure I know myself,” Gordon laughs.

“That’s a good question.

“That one was really based on the bass. It just came from improvising and finding, in an organic way, the sorts of melodies and patterns I want to be playing, and having the song cater to that. And, soon after I had figured that out and had sculpted it into a song, I started working on the guitar and keyboard part, pretty much one bar at a time. For half an hour, I’d sit there and work on one measure on guitar, making sure, the whole way, that nothing got in the way of what I liked about the bass part.

“Which is not the way that songs are usually written. You know, usually the bass is the supportive thing, and it kind of doesn’t matter if you can hear it or not. But in this case, I really wanted for the bass to remain … . Actually, the Beatles did a good job with this kind of thing. Sometimes when they had only a few tracks to work with, they would record the bass last. And that would allow it to be a little more prominent, so it didn’t get buried by all the other stuff.”

When we talked with Gordon a couple years ago, he went more or less out of his way to tell us that he didn’t regard himself as a particularly strict bandleader type. Managing arrangements, tweaking his other players’ parts, all that. Maybe that was a luxury he was enjoying at the time, with Phish on indefinite (and

for all anyone knew at the time, permanent) hiatus, but time has become a precious commodity for the bassist these days, and he readily conceded to growing more comfortable swiveling in the captain’s chair.

“That’s true,” Gordon says of that self-analysis from 2008, “but at the same time, I think I have leadership qualities that are now really getting to flourish. I guess they did a little bit with filmmaking.

“I think that even people who are a little bit laid back can find their mojo and step up to the plate — that’s a mixed metaphor there, sorry — and really go for it. I mean, I just got off a Phish tour, and it was great, but now we’re just getting ready to go out, and there’s so much to do, you gotta make some decisions quickly. I like having the aggressive part of my personality come out, too.”

It’s going to sound a little like Phish, of course.

You don’t shed 27 years of history just like that, and Gordon’s ambitious technique and off-center songwriting are central to Phish’s enduring allure. But Gordon is conscious of his personality outside the band as well.

“All along the way,” Gordon explains, “I’ve had my own influences and interests. We all have our own interests. I listen to a lot of … kinda of funky-yetsubtle music. Like, JJ Cale. Stuff that doesn’t beat you over the head, that has some subtext to it, something beneath the surface. But something that has a dancey, funky, rock quality to it.

“So, these are my interests, and so it makes sense that when I do get time to go into the studio, I can be the guy making all those decisions, and make things sound like that.”

Before we cut Gordon loose, we took a minute to toss a little gratitude for Phish’s bruising and truewitness read of the early Genesis nugget “Watcher of the Skies,” a number they chipped loose from fourdecade-old prog strata and performed for Genesis’ Rock Hall induction ceremony last spring, with all but Peter Gabriel of the original band in attendance.

Brought a smile to an old progger’s wrinkled chops. But for Gordon, the technician, it was a bit like speaking off an ancient rune.

“Oh yeah, cool,” Gordon says. “And I’m trying to remember, it switches from a six-beat pattern to a 10-beat pattern at the end, with all those little bass parts in there. And yeah, to have Mike Rutherford in the audience watching, added a little extra energy to it.

“Very cool.”

Turnover brings creative freedom for Colour Revolt

J

esse Coppenbarger and Sean Kirkpatrick are the last men standing. Yet the lone remaining members of Colour Revolt’s early days are enjoying the creative breathing room offered by the departure of their former bandmates.

Coppenbarger is quick to admit the downside of having 60 percent of the Oxford, Miss., rock band exit during the past couple years. Yet he’s also realizing that a simpler life is an easier life, one that allows for a lot more creative and financial control.

“With Plunder, Beg and Curse [2008], we were five dudes with equal input sitting in a basement for a month at full volume playing the songs over and over,” Coppenbarger says. “At that point, when you start to go, ‘I’m not sure this part is OK for this sound,’ you start infringing on other people since that’s what they do in a song. But if it’s just you and another guy, you can take out an idea and you’re not hurting anybody’s feelings. It’s having less cooks in the kitchen. It’s a little simpler.”

The story started with guitarist Jimmy Cajoleas leaving for graduate school, initiating a domino effect that took bassist Patrick Addison with him. Once the band’s label, Fat Possum, decided against following up Plunder, drummer Len Clark left, leaving Kirkpatrick and Coppenbarger as the lone remaining members after two albums and an EP. “In one way, it’s like losing your brothers or something,” Coppenbarger says. “It’s someone turning their back on you and saying, ‘Look, this thing we all got behind, I don’t want to be a part of it anymore.’ It’s pretty frustrating to say the least.”

Yet the music was still there. In the midst of waiting for Fat Possum to decide what was next,

Kirkpatrick and Coppenbarger huddled up for several songwriting sessions that produced much of The Cradle, the band’s latest LP. “The band actually broke up for a while,” he says, “yet we still had all of these songs. So we realized that we could still make this work. We could rebuild the band, find people to tour with and find the right crew.”

A new Colour Revolt emerged after everything was said and done, one marked by a new sound (including the addition of keys from Brooks Tipton) and freedom.

“We’re now in a much better situation,” explains Coppenbarger. “We are now the label and we’re distributing ourselves through our management’s distribution, which is ADA [Alternative Distribution Alliance]. So we own our own record now. We don’t have any label telling us that we need to look cooler or sound a certain way. It is a lot more freedom.”

freedom after the first of the year. Some new music is definitely in the cards, but the format is currently undecided, according to Coppenbarger. Part of the indecision comes with the freedom, since the band stands completely responsible for every aspect of their music.

“Now we’re in a position to have to make things happen on our own,” says Coppenbarger. “There’s not as much money to do things, so we have to be more patient to have an idea fleshed out.

We can’t just go to the label and say, ‘This is what we want to do. Give us the money and we’ll go do it.’ Now we have to say, ‘Well, we have to build this and play some more shows and then we’ll have the money to do some projections or lights.’ It just takes more time to raise that money.

“But it’s also great because we’re more in touch with our fans and they’ve been a lot more important into how this process goes in making things happen,” he continues. “In turn, we’re able to take more money from the records and actually make more records, do more touring and actually be out there more often with our fans. So it’s better all around.”

Even with the changes in the line-up and instrumentation, Coppenbarger says a Colour Revolt show is still a great, sweaty time.

“The biggest difference is that we have keys, so it’s more epic in some parts,” Coppenbarger says. “People should come and expect to have some fun. It’ll be pretty sweaty. There’s a lot of highs and lows and it’s pretty dynamic. But it’s not like we have a ton of LED lights or costumes or anything. It’s still a loud show.

It’s a rock band, but it’s not this three-guitar onslaught type of thing.”

New art exhibition pairs the surreal with the nostalgic

eer through A Window Into Your Imagination, the new exhibition of two Colorado artists at SmithKlein Gallery, and you’ll glimpse a vibrant world rife with beauty. The surreal dreamscapes of Tammi Otis hang across from Bryce Widom’s impressionistic meadows and open skies, sandwiching the viewer between ephemeral realms and whimsical images.

For those who know Widom as the chalkboard artist for Mountain Sun and Southern Sun, Window offers a more comprehensive perspective into the talent and vision of this Boulder-based painter. He took a circuitous route to becoming a professional artist, working as a children’s bus driver, ice cream scooper, telephone psychic and a cook and waiter at Mountain Sun before landing the chalkboard gig. Shortly after, Widom’s work gained “What Makes the Worlds Turn” by Tammi Otis him enough attention and commissions that he quit his job to become a full-time artist.

“Usually the birds in my paintings symbolize bringers of truth. If there’s a crow or a sparrow it’s often because there’s some subtle truth that somebody doesn’t want to look at,” Otis says. “It seems like a lot of art with crows or ravens is really dark, but I want mine to be a little more user-friendly. I like a contrast of darkness and light in my paintings. It’s more interesting for the viewer that way, and it’s more interesting for me to paint.”

Though Otis usually uses models for her female figures, she notes that they often end up looking a bit like her once they’re on the canvas, which gives her work an autobiographical tilt.

“I wouldn’t say I necessarily paint happy paintings, but some of them definitely have a note of whimsy or cheer,” Otis says. “For this show, I wanted to paint something a little more uplifting. With the economy being down and people not being in a good space, I wanted to bring a bit more light into things than I had previously.”

Widom echoed this sentiment, saying that he too was motivated to create paintings that expressed a buoyant, inspiring message.

“So many of us, individually and collectively, are struggling. Not just in this Boulder culture or this American culture, but in this global culture,” Widom says. “The paintings are speaking to that, though not in a direct way. They’re speaking to the fact that everything is fundamentally not only OK, but good.

I feel that deeply. All the beautiful, the sublime, the ugly and the most atrocious acts of humanity all arose in a spaciousness [that] is fundamentally good.

I feel like that’s what my work is about, regardless of what I’m doing — whether I’m waiting tables, scooping ice cream or making art.”

deep space climbing. With gravity reduced by 60 percent, the climber could easily scramble over the 12-mile deep craters — so easy that it’s probably best-suited for a novice climber.

“The problem with the moon is it’s very boring,” says Fran Bagenal, professor of astrophysical and planetary sciences at the University of Colorado at Boulder. “There’s not much vertical relief.”

Bagenal admits that the bouldering might be worth the three-day trip, but the climber would have to be very careful with dynamic moves.

“If you put yourself up on a boulder, you might accidentally send yourself into orbit,” Bagenal says.

The planets nearest the Earth both boast solid mountain formations, but the climate makes for challenges far more difficult than the climb.

Venus, a mere 25 million to 160 million miles from Earth depending on where it is in its orbit, is the second planet from the sun. With pressure 100 times that of Earth and temps soaring to 860 degrees Fahrenheit, it may be a bit uncomfortable for climbing.

The highest mountain in the solar system, Olympus Mons, towers above the surface of Mars. The peak of this shield volcano stands 16.7 miles high, three times the height of Everest. Although the height of the Martian mountain is very alluring, the approach requires serious patience.

After traveling six months via rocketship, a climber gathering her gear at the base of Olympus Mons would not even be able to see the peak.

According to the NASA website, the diameter of Olympus Mons stretches 374 miles, roughly the size of Arizona.

In addition to the heinous hike, climbers would have to battle Mars’ average temps of minus 9 F and fine-grained basalt, reminiscent of the loose rock conditions of the Canadian Rockies. Shifts in the martian crusts, dubbed “marsquakes,” may also hinder the climbing process, though NASA has yet to measure the seismic movement on the planet.

After scaling Olympus Mons, a climber can hop the next rocketship to Valles Marineris, the “Grand Canyon” of Mars. At nearly 2,500 miles long, 124 miles wide and more than four miles deep, Valles Marineris dwarfs its Earth cousin. Huge blocks of volcanic rock are sure to whet the appetite of any big-wall climber, and the fluvial material of the floor suggests water is responsible for the massive canyon. And if water exists, ice exists. Picks and crampons anyone?

If Mars proves too tame, climbers could move farther out in the solar system to the moons (also known as satellites) of Jupiter and Saturn.

“Io [the third-largest satellite of Jupiter] has huge mountains,” Bagenal says. “There’s one really serious problem, though. The radiation is so high, you’d fry in about 10 minutes.”

Io’s atmosphere is 90 percent sulfur dioxide. Active volcanoes spewing sulfuric deposits contribute to Io’s atmosphere, making it one of the most dangerous and hostile environments in the solar system.

“It makes Hiroshima look like a picnic,” Bagenal says.

Climbers hoping to avoid Io’s sharp, steep cliffs and harsh conditions could head to Jupiter’s sixth-largest moon, Europa. With a surface temperature of minus 260 F, Europa sports large, vertical cliffs made entirely of ice, some 19 miles thick.

Saturn’s satellite Titan is also a prime playground for winter sports enthusiasts. Huge dunes, composed of ice ball bearings, surround the methane lakes on Titan.

“Forget the climbing [on Titan],” Bagenal said. “Go water-skiing. It would be like water-skiing on liquid propane. The frozen lakes would be ideal for ice skating.”

Big-wall climbers need to look no further than Miranda, a satellite of Uranus, 1.6 billion miles from Earth. The terrain is a mixture of deep canyons and ridges, some three miles high. And while only the world’s most talented climbers can scale cliffs like El Cap once or twice in a day (read: Tommy Caldwell), a climber might be able to climb the big walls of Miranda several times in an hour due to the lack of gravity. Of course, surface temperatures hovering around minus 335 F might slow down even the most seasoned climber.

While NASA is not currently taking bids from private citizens for space travel, the average cost of sending one human into space is $10 billion. Overdue disaster

W

riter-director Todd Phillips understands comedy and comedic structure. He’s no stranger to the possibilities of the cinematic road trip.

He made Old School, which I liked. From a commercial standpoint, he’s money all the way, thanks in particular to last summer’s smash The Hangover.

Yet the few of us who sort of hated that picture, as much for its plodding calculation as its misogyny, free-floating racism and easy, lazy comic targets, will find Due Date even more of a drag. I wonder if anyone will come out of it saying, “Now that was a really good comedy.” Anything you might find amusing in Due Date (in “rather a mean way,” to quote Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel), you’ve seen already in the trailer.

People don’t want much from time-wasters like this, and in this regard Due Date succeeds: It doesn’t deliver much. At the Atlanta airport, through a series of horsey contrivances, a homeward-bound L.A. architect played by Robert Downey Jr. lands on a nofly list along with a gormless would-be actor, portrayed by Zach Galifianakis. They’re forced to share a

rental car on their drive west. They fight. The architect burns, while the actor fiddles. They odd-couple it all the way across the south and southwest. They share father issues (the Galifianakis character is carrying his late dad’s ashes in a coffee can, looking for a fitting place to bid them farewell). The architect is a rageaholic and a pluperfect piece of dung who’s “working on” becoming a better person so he can be a decent father.

So it’s Planes, Trains and Automobiles without the plane or train. The pathos really is shameless, arriving with killing regularity and false humility. At its darkest, Due Date recalls the acrid nature of the humor in Observe and Report. I’ll give director and co-writer Phillips this much: I did not expect the scene in which Downey smashes Galifianakis’s face against a car door, played not for laughs but to signify a Simmering Kettle of Violence, Ready to Explode. Next minute, they’re pals again.

Huh? Wha? Downey is among our most entertaining actors (Galifianakis, I’d characterize as more lucky than talented), but you sense a high-flying performer coasting pretty close to the ground here. Downey is smart enough to realize what he’s dealing with in Due Date. And he probably suspects it’ll get by, because it’s an odd-couple road-trip comedy, shot with woozy handheld cameras in an attempt at low-down gritty realism, from the man who made The Hangover.

An animated yawn

E

arlier this year Despicable Me proved it: A story about a hapless villain, humanized, is good for a few laughs and a half-billion dollars worldwide. That figure would very likely be A-OK with the makers of the new DreamWorks animated feature Megamind, also about a hapless villain, humanized. This villain’s blue.

Moderately funny though immoderately derivative, the film is no How to Train Your Dragon or Kung Fu Panda, DreamWorks’ recent high points, and it’s more about attitude than it is about jokes. Welcome to the early 21st century.

Somewhere around the time Monsters vs. Aliens became a huge success, “wit,” in quotes, became wittier than wit, without the quotes.

by Michael Phillips supernaturally attractive aura) of Metro Man, defender of Metro City, slightly smug in his fabulousness.

Like all sorts of comics-derived material before it, Megamind concerns the insecurities and doubts of those who aren’t expected to have such things. An immigrant from another galaxy, raised by hardened criminals, Megamind wages attempt after attempt to take over Metro City with the aid of his minion, Minion (a fishlike critter in a space helmet, voiced rather sweetly by David Cross).

When he appears to defeat Metro Man, everything changes. Like Scar in The Lion King, Megamind turns his homeland into a dump.

Trying to get the old adversarial magic back, he trains a new rival ( Jonah Hill voicing Hal, a TV cameraman moony over the on-air reporter voiced by Tina Fey). Megamind’s new rival acquires superpowers but uses them for uncon-

trollable evil, rather than controllable evil. Bits and pieces come and go, either vaguely or directly inspired

by The Dark Knight (an attack on City Hall); The Incredibles (hopeless nerd becomes destructive, tantrum-prone dastard); the Richard Donner Superman (Ferrell disguises himself as Marlon Brando playing Jor-El); and various other uncredited sources.

You have seen all this before. Screenwriters Alan Schoolcraft and Brent Simons do a few things right, starting with the decision to make the Megamind/ Minion relationship genuinely affectionate. That helps you through the saggy middle section, and later, when the action sequences start sitting on the plot.

Then again, my son would’ve preferred more of those (the action scenes, that is). He also would’ve preferred chase sequences in which, now and then, whomever’s being chased by whatever down a city street simply makes a sharp right turn. “This is the thing I hate about a lot of movies,” he told me on the way out.

“Why don’t they just turn?” Perhaps someday we’ll see it: an animated feature ruled by ruthless logic and ironclad plausibility, whatever the villain’s color.

As a covert officer in the CIA’s Counter-Proliferation Division, Valerie leads an investigation into the existence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Valerie’s husband, diplomat Joe Wilson (Sean Penn), is drawn into the investigation to substantiate an alleged sale of enriched uranium from Niger. But when the administration ignores his findings and uses the issue to support the call to war, Joe writes a New York Times editorial outlining his conclusions and igniting a firestorm of controversy. At Esquire. — Landmark Theaters A Film Unfinished At the end of World War II, 60 minutes of raw film, having sat undisturbed in an East German archive, was discovered. Shot by the Nazis in Warsaw in May 1942, and labeled simply “Ghetto,” the footage quickly gained traction as an important historical document, and has been used by archivists and documentary filmmakers over the past several decades to show what life was like in the ghetto. The images — accepted as reality — have now been proven to be a cinematic deception, as the Nazis had staged nearly all the scenes. The discovery of a long-missing fifth reel revealed the elaborate ruse: outtakes depict staged and choreographed scenes taken from various angles, even unintentionally capturing glimpses of SS cameramen behind the scenes. Much of what was once regarded as fact has been given a new truth. A Film Unfinished presents the entire film for the first time — carefully noting fictionalized sequences that falsely show “the good life” enjoyed by Jewish urbanites — and probes deep into the making of a now-infamous Nazi propaganda film.

For Colored Girls While Tyler Perry might have loved Ntozake Shange’s powerhouse of a play, he unfortunately becomes its undoing on screen.

Perry’s adaptation plants a group of women in a Harlem apartment building.

Connections are made, drama ensues, and Perry adds in several new characters to flesh out the ensemble and give it a Crashlike vibe of colliding destinies. The problem is that maximum emotional volume does not always equal maximum effectiveness, and Perry ends up with 134 minutes of misjudged intensity. Rated R. But the casting of Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich and Helen Mirren as a team of ex-CIA agents targeted and framed for murder by their former bosses implies something more substantial than your usual shoot-’em-up. Rated PG-13. At Flatiron, Century and Twin Peaks. — Rene Rodriguez

In this drama from Clint Eastwood, Matt Damon ponders what waits for us after death. (And why his face looks like that of a giant infant.) abuse survivor Lisbeth Salander, who exacts bittersweet revenge on the men who very nearly destroy her. This wrap-up film is a rather wobbly blend of courtroom drama and loose ends tied, albeit rather leisurely. It is both formulaic and unformulaic enough.

Rated R. At Century and Chez Artiste. — Michael Phillips Hereafter Clint Eastwood’s late life/late career fascination with mortality, death and grieving devolves into a cheap parlor trick in Hereafter. This wholly unsatisfying variation on “what lies beyond” shows him to be illsuited to the subject and to the sort of tale that involves setting three disparate characters on a path toward one another for a finale that isn’t so much a payoff as a “Yeah, and?” Rated PG-13. At Flatiron, Century and Colony Square. — Roger Moore Inception Blithely summarized, Inception’s plot would seem confusing and impenetrable.

Confusing? No doubt, and that’s what makes the film so enjoyable, as we try to tease and puzzle out what is really going on.

Impenetrable? Hardly. Simply put, mainstream moviemaking just doesn’t get any better than Inception. Rated PG-13. At Colony Square. — Randy Myers Inside Job From Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Charles Ferguson (No End In Sight) comes Inside Job, the first film to expose the shocking truth behind the economic crisis of 2008. A dream come true

pening a restaurant is always a long process.

But the chain of events that led to the opening of one Boulder restaurant and the realization of a lifelong dream spanned two continents and intertwined the fates of two women in a way neither of them could have foreseen.

Ratiya Edfors and Pranom Kiatreungwattana, coowners of Naraya Thai and Sushi — which celebrated its grand opening this past weekend — both originally hail from Thailand. Edfors is originally from northern Thailand, Kiatreungwattana from an area just outside of the capital city of Bangkok. In 1995, both women moved to the U.S., but to opposite ends of the country.

Kiatreungwattana had gotten her undergraduate degree in Thailand but wanted to come to the U.S. to get her MBA. She decided to attend the University of Colorado and moved to Boulder, and except for a brief two-year period when she returned to Thailand to get married, she has been in Colorado ever since.

“I love the Flatirons,” she says. “I applied to 10 universities, but then I saw a picture of the Flatirons and I decided to go to CU.” Boulder’s scenic beauty is also what eventually brought Edfors to Colorado. Edfors moved to the D.C. area to marry her husband, who worked for NASA at the time. Five years ago, on a trip to Boulder, her husband fell in love with the town and got a job with Ball Aerospace and convinced Edfors to move to Boulder with him.

“He called me up and said, ‘We have to move out here,’” Edfors says. “I thought he was joking, and I said OK. But a week later he told me, ‘We have to move out here to work now.’ He just loved it so much.”

Edfors quickly became well-known in Boulder’s Thai community. She had enjoyed cooking ever since she began working at restaurants as a teenager in Thailand, so she decided to host dinners at her house for Thai students at CU. “I felt like they were far away from home and I should do something to get us together with what I’m good at,” says Edfors. “They seemed to enjoy it, and I enjoyed the company as well.”

It was at one of these dinners that Edfors and Kiatreungwattana first met and became fast friends. As

they got to know each other better, Edfors told Kiatreungwattana that it had always been a dream of hers to open a restaurant.

“It’s inside of me; it’s in my blood,” Edfors says.

“I’ve been working in the restaurant business since I was a teenager. I started working and I fell in love with it. I like to be around people. That’s in my nature to begin with, and I enjoy every bit of it.”

Finally, Edfors asked if Kiatreungwattana would use her business experience to help manage the restaurant.

“When we started to get to know each other she asked me seriously if I wanted to become her partner,” Kiatreungwattana says. “She said, ‘I will work in the kitchen and you can help me in the back office with the management side of the restaurant.’ I said OK, I want to help you.

“I was always impressed with her northern cuisine and cooking. All the Thai students knew about Ratiya and her cooking. When I tasted her food I would kind of tease her and ask, ‘Why don’t you open up a restaurant?’ She would just sort of smile, but I think she thought that in her head, too. She just didn’t know when and where to start.”

eye out for a location. Then, three months ago, a location on 1575 Folsom St. — that used to house The Siamese Plate/Siamese Plate on the Go, a Thai and sushi restaurant — opened up, and they leapt on it.

In addition to the building, the two also inherited most of the previous restaurant’s staff, including sushi chef Charlie Kiyomichi, which allowed them to continue offering sushi in addition to Edfors’ Thai dishes.

“The thing is, this restaurant had been here for 18 years,” Kiatreungwattana says. “When I was here at CU it was here already. It was known they offered Thai and sushi, which at the time was still a new concept, kind of the best of both worlds. They had regular customers, so when you come with a Thai background you don’t just want to offer Thai, because those customers are used to us offering Japanese. We are special because we offer both Thai and sushi with a real Thai chef and a real sushi chef right here.”

The two women have made several changes to the restaurant, however, to make it more eco-friendly, to fit in with the Boulder scene. They changed all of the light bulbs to LEDs and started recycling.

“We just want to be a part of Boulder, because I really love it here,” Edfors says. “The people are really nice. I love it and I don’t want to move away. I think it’s an opportunity town for everybody, but they have to love it in order to enjoy it.”

As both women scrambled to serve a crowded restaurant on the first night of their grand opening on Nov. 5, they both acknowledged that running Naraya was a daunting task, but one that they both embraced.

“It feels great,” says Edfors. “It’s just fulfilled a dream, and she’s helped me to do this. We just thought we should do it, because I’d been talking about it for a long time.”

“We’ve been working every day the past three months,” says Kiatreungwattana. “We got a day off on Labor Day, and our next day off will be Thanksgiving.

We come to work every day, and it’s a new day and new challenges every day, but we still have that energy to keep on moving. I never had experience with restaurants before, but you know, after becoming friends you want your friend’s dream to come true.”

e are now a couple weeks into November, and pumpkin month rolls on.

This week will be a recipe you make more than once, I guarantee it! Pumpkin Scones with Nutmeg Glaze. Yes, I know, very exciting.

Serve these up for the holidays, and your friends will think they have died and gone to bed and breakfast heaven. If you want them to ever leave, you might need to refrain from baking this particular treat. But if you don’t care about your houseguests setting up camp, then bake away.

There is just something about a scone, somewhere in between a biscuit and shortbread. Flaky and tender is what you want. Not too sweet, but sweet enough. I feel I just described me on a good day. Not the flaky part, of course.

Scones are another one of those sweet treats that you can have morning, noon or night. Coffee, check.

Afternoon tea, check. After-dinner cordial, check. It even fits into the snack category. A pumpkin scone alongside a pumpkin latte is pumpkin lover overdrive — not to be confused with the ’70s Canadian band Bachman Turner Overdrive.

Bake up a few batches, wrap them up and give them away in a Thanksgiving basket of goodies.

They travel well, and you don’t need utensils, garnishes or sprucing up before people dig in. I do know a few peeps who like to warm them up with a little butter added, but I think they’re fine with just scone and glaze.

Pumpkin pie, of course, always takes center stage at most holiday shindigs, but this pumpkin concoction will make your guests forget all about the pie they didn’t have, and request the recipe for their next hullabaloo. I am working the thesaurus for celebration synonyms today, aren’t I? I just feel such jubilation for my pumpkin-palooza month, I can hardly stand it.

Alright my little pumpkin heads, whip up a batch and par-tay. I did not need the thesaurus for that one.

Now, follow the directions, put some love into it and invite me over when it’s done.

Pumpkin Scones with Nutmeg Glaze 1/2 cup pure pumpkin 1/3 cup milk or heavy cream (I used 2 percent) 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla 2 cups flour 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/4 tsp. salt 2 tsp. cinnamon 1 tsp. cloves 1/2 tsp. nutmeg 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1/2 cup unsalted butter (cut into pieces)

Nutmeg Glaze 1 cup powdered sugar 2 1/2 tbsp. milk 1/4 tsp. nutmeg Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly spray with cooking oil.

In small bowl, combine pumpkin, milk and vanilla. Stir until combined, set aside. In large bowl, sift together flour, brown sugar, salt, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. Add in butter and mix with pastry cutter or fork until dough looks like coarse crumbs.

Add pumpkin mixture to flour, gently stir until dough forms (you might need a tad more flour if too sticky to work with).

Lay dough out onto lightly floured surface. Pat into circle about 3/4 to 1-inch thick. Cut like a pie into 8 pieces. (I cut into 12 pieces, because I wanted thinner ones.)

Place on prepared baking sheet.

Bake for 20 minutes, until edges are turning golden brown. Take out and let cool. In small bowl mix together glaze ingredients. Brush generously onto each scone and let glaze set.

Note: After first glaze set, I made half the glaze recipe with only a bit of milk, and drizzled the thicker glaze over top, making a nice, pretty finish on the scone.
