Blowing smoke (Re: “Cain’s manager inhales,” Danish Plan, Nov. 3.) When Paul Danish refers to Herman Cain’s future search for “all sorts of unexpected and ignored constituencies” that, like the Smoker’s Block he’s presumably won over, will Cain be going after the Union of Concerned Alcoholics? The Serial Groper Community? The Cannibals Bund? Or even the extremely closeted Eaters of Belly Button Lint (and you know who you are!)?

Religion and abortion (Re: “God’s gifts,” letters, Nov. 3.)

All I could think after reading J.D. Simonson’s letter on “God’s Gifts” (the supposed gift of life granted by his god who he didn’t identify) was OMG! There is no sense in even discussing Mr. Simonson’s faith-based belief in a creator versus evolution. Faith is defined as “unquestioning belief that does not require proof ” and is therefore immune to logical or reasoned arguments. However, the idea that life for most is a “gorgeous existence we are privileged to live in” is ludicrous on its face, except for maybe the very few of us (1 percent or so?) born into luxury, as is accepting that life, in fact, is just watching the “wonderful changing seasons, the beautiful colors, our mountains, seas, sun...” without putting in

Today, that insidious love (taking the form of greed and excess) is celebrated in our country and has even exalted into official public policy, marring our economy with inequality and injustice. The reigning ethos of our nation’s upper crust is that too much is not enough. They’re not merely out to make loads of the money they love, but to make a killing, everyone else be damned.

While I’m at it I might ask why most of the “right to life,” anti-abortion crowd are so anxious to put people to death through state-sponsored executions, wars and denial of universal health care?

I continue to believe abortion is a difficult decision the prospective mother must make, and I would suggest that these folks so worried about “life” put some of their energy into improving it for the 99 percent or so whose “gorgeous existence” requires both effort and dimes and may still not be achieved.

Simonson’s letter titled “God’s gifts” as a counterpoint to my “Fetal faith” letter (Oct. 27) regarding the Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church using “white crosses” for their (since removed) pro-life display on South Boulder Road to symbolize unborn fetuses, it would seem your letter has missed the mark here.

You state much of the obvious in that “each of us are privileged beings here on Earth reaping all the gifts from our Creator.” Unfortunately, J.D., had you read my letter closely you would see that it wasn’t directed as a jab against “the Creator,” but more so at “proCatholic/pro-life views,” as Sacred Heart took it upon themselves to use the sign of the crucifixion of “their chosen God” to symbolize the religion of an unborn fetus. I will agree with you in that the majority of humans here on Earth believe in some form of “a creator,” but for those who are still unborn perhaps the Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church shouldn’t jump in so quickly and push the sign of the cross as a symbol of an unborn fetus. For a fetus has no brain function in the womb and therefore cannot choose whether it believes in their God, a God or any God, for that matter.

Keep moving your money Voters in Boulder are clearly fed up with corporate control of our lives. In the Nov. 1 election, 73 percent of us supported 2H, a measure in favor of a constitutional amendment to abolish Constitutional rights for corporations and end the Supreme Court’s equating money with speech.

Support across the country for the Occupy movement is another indication that people want real change that puts control of our government and economy into our hands. In a recent CBS/ New York Times survey (Oct. 26), 43 percent of people said they agree with Occupy Wall Street’s goals, while 27 percent said they disagree. Thirty percent were unsure.

Last weekend, we had the opportunity to say “NO” to Wall Street banks and corporate power by participating in “Bank Transfer Day.” Thousands of people across the world moved their money from big commercial banks to small, locally owned credit unions. Our clear, unified message to Wall Street: end your reckless speculation, which is destroying our economy and jobs; make loans to homeowners and small businesses; and stop buying our government. By moving our money, we’ll be supporting local banks and credit unions that are locally controlled and make local loans to homeowners and small businesses.

ou’re sitting in a coffee shop. You notice that the adult sitting next to you is logged on to one of those torrent sites and is illegally downloading music, movies, books and games.

Knowing that this person is breaking the law — and determined to teach him right from wrong — you get up, pull off your belt, and proceed to beat this person for the next six minutes, shouting and berating him for this blatant act of stealing.

Well, you would never get away with that. Others would intervene. Then the police would arrest you on assault charges.

If only that person had been your daughter, a minor child who is much smaller than you and entirely dependent upon you. Then you would have been able to beat the shit out of her with impunity.

That’s what one Texas father did.

William Adams, an elected court-atlaw judge in Aransas County, caught his disabled 16-year-old daughter, Hillary, downloading games and music illegally and went after her with his belt — for six horribly violent minutes. Adams struck Hillary again and again on her arms, legs and abdomen with the belt, shouting profanity at her and even threatening to strike her “fucking face” if she didn’t lie down on the bed and submit.

Hillary’s mother helped, at one point, taking over in an apparent attempt to tone down the beating, but Adams didn’t go along with that. He left the room, returned with another belt and resumed striking Hillary, not yet satiated in his desire to punish her.

and again while she begged him to stop.

The public has become very familiar with William Adams’ idea of “discipline” because Hillary, now 23, hid a camera in her room and videotaped the beating, which took place seven years ago. Ms. Adams, who said it was not the only time her father abused her, released the video on YouTube after her mother and younger sister left her father, and it quickly went viral, garnering more than 5 million views.

Adams, who stepped down from the bench temporarily, is facing a judicial review, though the district attorney will not file criminal charges because the statute of limitations has passed.

Yet, despite the public outcry, Adams defends what he did as “disciplining” his disobedient daughter.

How is that there are still parents in 2011 who believe that the way to teach children is to cause them pain?

There is no other relationship where one person is permitted to hit someone else without facing arrest.

Hit your significant other or spouse, and you face arrest. Hit your employee or co-worker, and you face arrest. Even prison guards who strike inmates are subject to discipline.

But if you’re a parent, you can get away with smacks, whacks, paddling, spanking and beating your child with a belt and call it “discipline.”

To make matters worse, children love and trust their parents as they love and trust no one else. And yet the role of parent is the only one that enables one person to do violence to another and get away with it. Our laws don’t intervene in the parent-child relationship until violence reaches the level of “abuse,” a much higher threshold than the one that pertains to assault. A few smacks, some spankings, a whack with

a belt, and society is largely OK with it.

While much of the country is outraged by the brutality in that video, there are many who defend Adams, quoting the Bible to prop up their medieval notions of parenthood. What would Jesus have done had he confronted Hillary? Just guessing, but I doubt he’d have shouted, “If you so much as fucking look at me wrong, I’m going to wear your fucking ass out with this belt!”

Striking kids, hitting them, beating them isn’t about discipline; it’s about intimidation and dominance. It’s as lazy as it is brutal, skipping the hard work of teaching children in favor of controlling them through fear.

If Adams had been serious about teaching Hillary a lesson, he might have made her pay for the items she stole, working off her debt through chores. Or he might have taken a restorative justice approach — proven to have a big impact on young people — and required her to do a report on the harm that pirating does to the livelihoods of musicians, film professionals, writers and others.

There’s nothing like empathy for those you have wronged to make you feel contrite.

It wasn’t that long ago that a husband could beat his wife and get away with it. Although partner violence still occurs, it’s now illegal.

Anti-government wingnuts might not like it, but it’s time to give children the same respect under the law that we give everyone else in society by criminalizing violence as an acceptable form of discipline. One whack or six minutes worth of belt blows, it’s still the same thing — using violence to break a child’s will.

Dog to lead Occupy Denver That was a brilliant move by Occupy Denver, when they finally acquiesced to pressure from government officials to choose a leader to represent the group.

They chose Shelby, a border collie.

The group announced the selection on Nov. 8, saying in a news release that they drew inspiration from the notion that corporations are people.

“Shelby is closer to a person than any corporation: She can bleed, she can breed, and she can show emotion,” an anonymous member of the movement said in the release. “Either Shelby is a person, or corporations aren’t people.”

And then there was this, which is rich and speaks for itself: “Occupy Denver reserves the right to alter leadership status, but for now, Shelby exhibits heart, warmth and an appreciation for the group over personal ambition that Occupy Denver members feel are sorely lacking in the leaders some of them have voted for on national, state and local levels,” the release said.

Put GMOs on 2012 ballot For those who’ve been attended meetings and hearings regarding Boulder County’s cropland policy, the word “frustrated” doesn’t begin to cut it. After receiving public input that was overwhelmingly opposed to permitting genetically modified (GM) crops on county land, the Cropland Policy Advisory Group voted 6-3 to recommend that the county allow GM crops. Many were left with the feeling that the board had decided the issue before it even convened.

Now, a poll conducted by GMO Free Boulder shows that 56 percent of respondents oppose the growth of GM crops on county land, while 30 percent favor GM crops and 14 percent aren’t sure.

Right now, the county commissioners are set to decide the matter sometime in early 2012. But rather than leaving the decision up to three people, why not put GMOs on the 2012 county ballot and let the voters decide?

Obviously, the issue is highly charged, and highly charged issues make politicians nervous. A vote of the people is one way to be certain exactly how Boulder County feels about GMOs — and might be the only way to see the majority’s will enacted on county land.

Help plan for county, reservoir Boulder County officials have scheduled an open house on the county’s new comprehensive plan for Tuesday, Nov. 15.

A similar meeting will be held for the Boulder Reservoir master plan the next day.

From late August to early October, Boulder County Land Use staff hosted a series of six community meetings around the county to gain public input on the first steps for updating the county’s comprehensive plan. The open house is intended to provide feedback from those community meetings and to solicit more input from county residents on the plan.

Renew your school The Center for ReSource Conservation’s Renew Our Schools Program, which has awarded schools in Boulder with solar arrays since 2007, is expanding.

A dozen middle and high schools in the Boulder Valley and St. Vrain Valley school districts will compete in an energy conservation contest in which schools will earn points by reducing energy usage on campus or by having their students complete energy-saving tasks in their homes. The energy savings will be added together to determine the overall contest winner. The school that reduces its energy usage by the greatest percentage will win prizes valued at up to $25,000. The competition runs until Jan. 6, and the winners will be announced in mid-January.

There will also be a companion contest offered by the city of Boulder designed specifically as a fundraiser for parent-teacher organizations of schools in the City of Boulder.

The BVSD schools competing in the contest are Arapahoe Ridge High School, Boulder High School, Broomfield Heights Middle School, Broomfield High School, Centaurus High School, Fairview High School, Horizons K-8, New Vista High School and Summit Middle School. Occupying Big Oil An event called “Occupy Big Oil! Confronting Big Oil’s Disasters,” featuring author and activist Antonia Juhasz, will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 13, at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 5001 Pennsylvania Ave. Juhasz will discuss her latest research and writing about Big Oil’s most serious crimes, from the current financial crisis to the BP Gulf oil spill to wars for oil in the Persian Gulf — and what can be done to change course.

New computer recycling option Boulder’s downtown residents and businesses have a new option for computer recycling, thanks to Eco-Cycle and iSupportU. The two organizations are joining forces to provide a downtown drop-off location for such equipment. For a small fee, they will be brought to Eco-Cycle’s Center for Hard-to-Recycle Materials (CHaRM) to be recycled domestically using green, socially responsible practices, recovering nearly 100 percent of the materials. The EcoCycle/iSupportU arrangement is the first official CHaRM satellite drop-off center for outdated electronics.

Americans recycled less than 20 percent of their electronics and sent 2.6 million tons of consumer electronics to landfills and incinerators in 2009. Such electronics typically include lead, cadmium, beryllium and brominated flame retardants — all deadly contaminants that threaten environmental and public health.

Residents and businesses can drop off desktop and laptop computers, flat-panel monitors, printers, power supplies, keyboards, cables, mice and cell phones as part of the partnership.

Art wanted in Lafayette The City of Lafayette has issued two calls for art.

The Public Art Committee is looking for sculpture submissions to the 2012 Art on the Street Outdoor Sculpture Gallery. Art on the Street, which is in its fourth year, is the largest sculpture-onloan program in Boulder County.

Selected sculptures will be on display outside for a one-year period.

Artists’ submissions are due Dec. 3.

There are 17 spots available; selected artists will receive a $500 stipend upon installation. The program is not limited to local artists.

All you need is love — and a truck

magine if someone launched a movement that was not about money, religion or politics — an effort that was simply based on the idea of spreading love from one person to another.

That seems to be the story behind that brightly colored truck and camper shell plastered with messages like “You are a miracle” and “Love wins” that has been making its way around Boulder County and the Denver metro area.

It is the creation of Louisville resident Jeffrey “Yahva” Krumholz, who is hosting a party to kick off his “oneness” movement from 7 p.m. to midnight on Friday (11/11/11) at the Millennium Hotel’s grand ballroom in Boulder.

Krumholz insists that his initiative is not about making a profit and is not motivated by any particular religion. His father was Jewish, and his mother was Christian, but he says he never became attached to any belief system.

“We didn’t celebrate anything, but we did have a Christmas tree,” says Krumholz, who, fittingly, is a carpenter on the side.

here are potential bike frames growing alongside the New Jersey Turnpike.

No, that’s not some Salvador Dali-inspired hipster painting; it’s the truth, in a matter of speaking — you just need to know how to build a bike out of bamboo.

On Nov. 17, Boulder will get its chance to learn.

Fence Heanue and Merrily Grashin are the traveling faces of Bamboo Bike Studio, which builds bamboo bicycles in New York, San Francisco, and even Africa. But don’t buy a plane ticket just yet.

Heanue and Grashin are traveling the country in a modified U-Haul, teaching bamboo-bike building workshops, and will be leading a workshop with Satellite skate shop from Nov. 17 to Nov. 20. The two have been on the road since mid-September.

“We’ve done a funny little zig-zag,” says Heanue, who has been working with Bamboo Bike Studio for about a year and a half. “We started in Brooklyn, then went down to Florida, over to Alabama, and then up to Minneapolis.”

total strangers. He parks his rig along busy roads in Boulder and Denver and asks passers-by to hold giant signs that read “IAMLOVE.org.” His umbrella organization, The Gardening of Love, offers games, books, apparel and stickers trumpeting the message, as well as free email workshops.

He insists that he’s not some kind of hippie, and he says the response to his outgoing approach has been uniformly positive.

“People are waving and honking all the time,” he says.

One man asked him if they could agree that Jesus is the only path to salvation, and Krumholz stopped short.

“I’m not going to make the call on any of that,” he says. “Judgment is a funny thing. … I love Jesus in the sense that he served people and washed feet. I love Buddha because he practiced mindfulness.”

Plans for Friday’s drug- and alcohol-free party, where a $20 donation is suggested to help him pay for the event, include dancing to music from the ’60s and

’70s. There will also be large-scale artistic installations and a series of stations where visitors can create art or participate in a “garden of love” that involves choosing a seed or potted lettuce seedling and assigning it a concept they need to work on in their lives, such as “gratitude” or “forgiveness.” The event will also feature short inspirational speeches every half hour and a special musical surprise at 11:11 p.m.

Krumholz’s next stop is New York City.

“We’re looking for what’s really genuine in the world, not Walmart or Target,” he says. “I just pursued love.”

From blight to bike Bamboo Bike Studio workshop coming to Boulder

by Theo Romeo doing research and development for a bike factory in Kumasi, Ghana, through a partnership between the UN’s Millennium Cities Initiative and Columbia University’s Earth Institute.

The factory opened in January 2011.

Unlike many of the bikes being built in New York, California, and the workshop tour, only one model is built in Kumasi, a simple design with coaster brakes (think when you learned to ride a bike, and the way to stop was peddling backwards).

The frames built in the workshops, however, are customizable.

When finished, the bamboo frames are just as strong as traditional steel bike frames. They don’t rot, because bamboo is naturally waterproof, and they are light weight.

Heanue and Grashin arrived in

Colorado on Nov. 1. They held a short workshop in Boulder on Nov. 4, which was attended by Dan Coppola, who built a frame in Bamboo Bike’s New York shop the year before.

He was attending the Nov. 4 workshop to build himself a cyclo-cross road bike, which are a bit more durable and normally used for touring.

“The first one I built was for my girlfriend,” says Coppola, who is the event coordinator for Adventure Fit, a local sports marketing company.

For each city, Heanue and Grashin order the bamboo, which will be delivered by Fed Ex, based on the number of people attending the workshop. Using files, drills and elbow grease, the frames are assembled — with instruction, of course, and by the end of the workshop,

should be ready for the bike’s components: brakes, seat post, crank, etc.

But so far, according to Heanue, things have been a bit slow.

“We’re having trouble getting the word out,” he says.

There hasn’t been a lot of consistency with attendance or even the venues they build at in each city. Sometimes they are outside, using the awning of their modified U-Haul — which Heanue and Grashin have turned into a veritable steam-punk masterpiece of pulleys and trap doors — as a makeshift shelter from the elements.

The Nov. 17 workshop is being hosted by Satellite skate shop, but Heanue and Grashin weren’t sure where the final venue would be.

awyer is a one in a hundred dog. He’s sweet, loyal and smart, with a playful streak likely to mature into a watchful air. At 16 months old, 83 pounds and mostly legs, he has a puppy’s energy for bounding through the backyard, but is so eager to please that his foster guardian says her best disciplinary weapon is a spray bottle.

She called staff at Boulder Humane to discuss Sawyer’s situation and ask for a little more time. The staff she spoke with gave her until noon the next day.

“I said, ‘Does that mean if we don’t give you an answer about where Sawyer’s going to go by noon tomorrow, he’ll be euthanized?’ And she basically — she didn’t exactly say yes, but basically, yes, that’s the only option,” Davis says. “They’ve deemed him unadoptable. If they don’t get word from rescue and he’s not out of there by noon the next day, he would be euthanized. So her and I had a bit of a back and forth about that, and she said, ‘Well, if your agency can’t help me, I’ll find one that can.’ And I said, ‘Just so you understand, it’s not an agency. I’m one person in California in a townhouse, dealing with every Akbash in the United States that is sheltered.’ ... I’ve rarely had a deadline like that other than extremely highkill shelters.”

“We ask for the same courtesy as we do with the [owner] reclaim, which is just let us know by the end of the following business day whether you think you can assist or not,” says Bridgette Chesne, director of shelter services at the Humane Society of Boulder Valley.

As to Sawyer just barely getting a stay of execution, Chesne says, “I think there may have been some confusion in that arena. I think that when the staff reaches out to a rescue group some of the staff that’s corresponding might not even know what that decision might be. ... And I think the way we’ve constructed the email, and which sometimes is true, is that if the rescue group cannot assist that, that animal may be euthanized.”

A decision had not yet been reached in Sawyer’s case, she says. She was still exploring his options.

“If the rescue group perceives that we have not made a euthanasia decision, they are less likely to assist us,” Chesne says. “We’re not really saying he is or isn’t — sometimes I think we are — but many times I think we’re still in that information gathering process and our decision is not always dependent on the rescue group’s ability to assist or not.”

Sawyer would likely have been rehomed with his medical condition noted, or might have moved into a humane society foster home.

If a rescue agrees to take a dog, Chesne says, the shelter would be willing to hold the dog for up to a week while foster care or boarding is arranged.

Rescue based in Gold Hill, who picked Sawyer up from Boulder’s humane society and helped transport him to Denkai Animal Sanctuary, near Greeley, where he was held until his foster family could pick him up.

“This dog’s healthy. Yes, granted, [he has] special needs.” Carmen says. Her vet says his condition is a treatable one and, particularly at his age, should be manageable. “With food and bathing and medication, it goes away eventually.”

•••• Rafa was tougher to handle. But getting a puppy while between residences, jobs and just before starting a Ph.D. program in North Carolina wasn’t Bradley and Emily Ferguson’s idea. Rafa was a gift. They were living in Boulder for a summer internship, and Emily was six months pregnant, when her mother gave them a Labrador retriever mix puppy.

“He was kind of hard to deal with,” Bradley says. “We took him to PetSmart to get some training to kind of control the biting, and they agreed that he bit a little bit more and he was a little more defiant than the average puppy. And we just didn’t have the means, the money and the time to discipline him and to teach him. If we did we would have definitely kept him. So we gave him to the [Boulder] humane society so he could find a home with someone that could give him the time and had the finances to take care of him.”

The owner surrender form at Boulder Humane includes a box to check if you’d like to be notified if your pet hasn’t been adopted or has demonstrated other issues and is in line to be euthanized. The Fergusons had checked the box. They were living in Utah when they got the call from Boulder Humane.

“They felt like he was too dangerous to rehome him, and so they gave us the option. They said either you can come reclaim him or we’ll have to put him down,” Bradley says. “I do believe them that Rafa was a little bit harder than the average puppy, but that being said, I still felt he was manageable.”

Wolf, the same person who stepped in to help transport Sawyer, spotted a Craiglist ad the Fergusons posted Aug. 5 looking for someone to adopt Rafa.

The Fergusons gave Boulder Humane permission to release Rafa to her care.

“It was more sad than anything,” Bradley says. “It was especially hard on my wife because after we’d gone through the emotional ordeal of giving him up to somewhere where we thought he would be fine, it was really hard to go through that whole process again of trying to figure out what to do with him because obviously we wanted him to be happy.”

“We as an organization want to be transparent. We want people to have Boulder Weekly

choices,” says Lisa Pedersen, chief executive officer of the Humane Society of Boulder Valley. “We do want them to understand when they sign over we are saying, ‘We are going to do an assessment and if we are looking at euthanasia, do you want to be contacted?’ We want to give them that power.”

It’s not that Boulder Humane couldn’t or wouldn’t — or even that they didn’t — work with Rafa. Their behavior modification program, piloted in 2007, has worked with more than 700 dogs on issues with food guarding, novel item guarding, fearfulness, dog/dog interactions and body handling sensitivities. Adult animals entering the shelter are tested for behavioral issues, and if they demonstrate any, they’re enrolled in the behavior modification program, where they’re worked with twice daily and training is supplemented with playgroups and time with shelter employees.

But in a shelter that manages almost 6,000 animals each year, efficiency has been key.

“Our goal is to make sure we can resolve the behavioral problem within an amount of time that doesn’t start to negatively impact the animal otherwise in a shelter environment. So our goal is always to attempt to resolve behavior problems in under 14 days,” says Lindsay Wood, director of animal training behavior at HSBV. “Anything over 14 days and up to three weeks, we’ll start to see a real deterioration in an animal’s behavior because this isn’t a low-stress home setting that they’re living in.”

The program has a 90 percent success rate, according to Wood. Overall, the average stay in the shelter is six days for a dog and 14 days for a cat.

“If we started to notice that this animal isn’t resolving within the 14 days what we would need to look at is the reasons why,” Wood says. “The more behavior problems or the higher the complexity of issues, the much less favorable the prognosis will be for a dog.”

Rafa had been enrolled in the behavior modification program to handle food guarding, rawhide guarding and novel item guarding, a complex series and a number of issues that would make training more difficult.

“Due to his age, we really wanted to attempt to resolve that,” Wood says.

“We worked for, I would say three weeks … and during that period we were really having difficulty resolving any of those categories successfully and we had seen a variety of other behaviors surface.”

They reached out to breed rescues for help, and the rescues declined because of the complexity of Rafa’s issues and his aggression, Wood says.

“I don’t always know about every single animal these guys are working

with, but I remember having the conversation because he was a puppy, and our training team was really dedicated and was really struggling because this was such a complex issue,” Pedersen says. “Euthanasia is not the decision that we want to make.”

Notes from Rafa’s file indicate that he was not likely to be euthanized because he was so young. But the impression of his former family and the rescues that rushed to move him was otherwise.

“We want to be really transparent.

Yes, euthanasia is one of the things on our list of choices that we are considering at this time,” Pedersen says. “We don’t want to sugar-coat or not be upfront about that this is a serious situation. This is an animal that doesn’t fit into our particular criteria. That doesn’t mean that animal couldn’t be assisted by another organization. ... And that’s one of the things that we really appreciate about those rescue groups, they do have different strategies.”

•••• Rafa didn’t go to rescue, though. He went to the Longmont Humane Society and was enrolled in their behavior treatment program. Longmont Humane runs a smaller shop, handling 1,885 dogs in 2010 (compared to Boulder’s 5,374) with a $3.1 million budget.

“We just don’t have the money, the budget to run the programs that we do without these volunteers,” says Kim Walje, the shelter’s executive director.

“They’re definitely very well-trained. It’s not that we’re just letting them run haphazard, but we’ve made it into such a teaching program that they’re willing to jump through these hoops to get to that level and then they stay invested.”

Volunteers help provide grooming, veterinary care, and volunteers who want to work with dog training can pass through multiple levels of certifications, each of which can take six months to complete.

Outside the behavior program, dogs are rehomed in an average of 10 days.

Dogs within the program are allowed to stay as long as trainers feel the dog is still making progress. They complete it in a range of time frames, Walje says: 25 percent in two weeks, 25 percent in a month, 25 percent in three months, and 25 percent take a year.

Dogs come from across the country, and Walje says there’s a waiting list to get in to the behavior program.

Longmont trainers have taken on cases like a dog from Michael Vick’s fighting rings and sleddogs that had never eaten from a bowl before.

“We’re small enough that we can go a little further than a lot of the bigger shelters,” Walje says. “We aren’t as corporate as a lot of shelters are, and we should be. It’s not necessarily a great

thing, but it’s a good thing in these situations. Rules are made to be broken, though, I think, especially for the right reasons.”

The behavior program has contributed to Longmont Humane increasing its live release rate from 70-some percent to 92 percent, according to Walje.

“For us, it works,” she says. “I think it’s fortunate that we’re small. It’s just workable. If it were much bigger, I think we couldn’t be able to pull off a program like that.”

When she goes to a rescue, she says, it’s more an exercise in diplomacy than in stringent deadlines.

After behavioral training work and time in foster care, Rafa was successfully adopted from the Longmont shelter.

“Everybody who knew the story, they were really angry that this little puppy [Rafa] was going to be killed,” says Lorraine May, executive director of The Misha May Foundation. May opened the foundation specifically to work with dogs that would get lonely, fearful or stressed in a shelter and rehabilitates them before offering them for adoption. The collaboration is key to saving dogs’ lives, May says — a sentiment Pedersen has echoed on behalf of Boulder Humane.

“It’s great that we can offer what we can offer and they can offer what they can offer, and that combination is literrally saving lives,” Pedersen says.

“The way the system is now, it’s an impossible job,” May says of the shelter staff. “The system has to change, and that’s having directors come in and say, ‘We’re not going to euthanize.’”

“We deserve more from Boulder Humane,” Wolf says. “You can’t just be good and not strive to be better.”

Pedersen told Boulder Weekly that shelter services has begun reviewing its communications protocol for those times they do reach out to rescues.

This past weekend, rescues were circulating an email about a puggle at risk at Boulder’s humane society. Trill, a 3-year-old male, bit a child who stuck its fingers through the bars of his cage.

“The bite did break skin, and Trill is now on a 10-day bite quarantine,” the Oct. 28 email read. “Due to this behavior, we are not able to rehome him through our facility. We feel that Trill could successfully transition into a new home through your rescue.”

It was Nov. 5 before the email was passed on to Wolf, who once again stepped forward to be the face of rescues and went the next day to pick him up from Boulder Humane, bought him a leash and collar, and took the squirmy, high-energy dog for a long walk.

Then, she loaded him back into the car and drove him to foster care.

landfill materials are resources that we can recycle and reuse. An example is that they were burning plastic bags, but if you combine them with saw dust, they can be used for wood decking. You can reuse cell phones for scrap metal, you can take a water heater and remake it to something else. Burning all those resources is a waste of the resources.”

On the other hand, Brian Karp, the district manager of Waste Connections, which is in charge of the Front Range Landfill, and Diehl both say the wasteto-energy project in Erie and zero waste are not mutually exclusive.

“This is taking what has already been deposited over the past 30 years and it is creating something good out of it,” Karp says. “We can still continue to look to zero waste and recycling options in the future.”

As for the economic concerns raised

by Eco-Cycle, Karp says the project ends up paying for itself. The energy produced from the methane from the Front Range Landfill is put back into the grid and sold to United Power.

Also, he says the well and vacuum system used to collect the gas was already in place because of federal regulations to collect any gas produced by the landfill. The difference now is that instead of collecting the gas to send to the flare system, which destroys the gas, the methane is sent to the engine to produce electricity — a process which Karp describes as “sexy.”

“I can take stuff you put out on your curb and I can turn it into something good,” Karp says. “Now tell me that’s not sexy.”

Waste-to-energy is another option for diverting methane from the atmosphere. In the case of Erie, this means collecting the methane gas from the Front Range Landfill and using it to power an engine, which then creates electricity. The result will be enough electricity to power the equivalent of half the homes in Erie today, according to Fred Diehl, a representative of the town of Erie who has been working closely with the gas-to-energy project.

“From the town’s perspective, we’ve worked hard to position ourselves as a sustainable community,” Diehl says.

“When the project partners of Waste Connections came to the town with this, really one of the ultimate green projects, our role was to make sure we could facilitate them on the planning side as quickly and efficiently as possible. We were presented with the opportunity to use methane gas that would otherwise be lost to power the equivalent of half the homes in our community. That is a powerful step toward our sustainability goals.”

Eco-Cycle does not agree that a waste-to-energy project is a good option.

In fact, a recent paper published on EcoCycle’s website says waste-to-energy projects are wasteful. Eric Lombardi, the executive director of Eco-Cycle, said in an email that waste-to-energy is a waste of money and makes the most expensive, polluting electricity known.

“The basic idea is to use and not burn our resources,” Abraham says. “These

he recently completed gasto-energy project at the Front Range Landfill in Erie is raising some questions about which approach is better: waste-to-energy programs, or zero waste.

While Front Range Landfill and the town of Erie have decided to follow the waste-to-energy path by trying to convert the gas from the landfill to electricity, the Boulder-based nonprofit EcoCycle favors the zero-waste option by trying to drastically reduce the amount of materials sent to landfills.

Zero waste is an approach of waste management focused on the reduction of landfill matter. It encourages companies to design products and packaging with reuse in mind, and encourages users to view their trash in terms of compost and recycling, not waste destined for the landfills.

Eco-Cycle, which works to build zero-waste communities, has a goal of “zero waste … or darn near.” According to Neshama Abraham, the communications and community campaign manager of Eco-Cycle, this means 90 percent or better of waste diversion from landfills to compost or recycling centers.

“There is no question we have a ways to go, but that is one of the reasons Eco-Cycle exists,” Abraham says. “Zero waste also has very much to do with how we deal with our organic materials — basically what would go in your food compost. That is a really important one, because organic matter in a landfill is a very big greenhouse gas emitter. Any organic matter that ends up in a landfill, like paper or packaging that is not recy-

formed into a regal uniform meant to inspire galactic awe and fight the bitter cold of space travel. It’s quirky, but it’s also a surprisingly believable portal into Sugalski’s stage personality, through which he commands an array of electronics and a killer soundtrack for cruising the galaxy.

TPA’s music is driven by an easygoing attitude, exactly the kind you would want to have on a long voyage through space. What separates Sugalski most from the electro-dance pack is the endearing, halfserious fantasy he creates in a world of black-clad and dead-serious DJs. He prefers to create a carefree party atmosphere.

“If you were to look at the suit itself, you’d be like ‘OK, Swedish ski suit from 1982,’” Sugalski told Boulder Weekly. “It does let people drop their guard, and often in this scene it’s all about who looks the coolest. When you see a guy in a yellow jumpsuit, everyone can latch onto that as being ridiculous. It’s all a party. We’re here to celebrate, and I’m here to facilitate that.”

Every artist is a diplomat for one thing or another, whether it is an ideology, a cultural heritage or just the motivation to dance. The Polish Ambassador’s fat bass and booty-bobbing rhythms are not highly innovative or technical, but they are solid and inviting tunes that are so effective they border on pop.

Sugalski manages to pack a ton of energy into the bleeps and bloops that compose a track. It’s that effortless style of energy that manages to get dance floors moving by invitation instead of force; in other words, diplomatically.

Sugalski’s taste shines through in his choice of remix material, giving a space-age shine to artists like Architecture in Helsinki, Little Dragon, George Michael and Manu Chao. Mid-tempo, easy-dancing

electro is the bread and butter of TPA’s catalog, and from that pace Sugalski is free to stretch in either direction.

“I want to create an experience for the concertgoer, create something that they’re going to remember that’s not just some blob of bass and drums that at the end of the night you’re like, ‘That was dope!’ but you don’t remember anything the next day.”

A recently added member of the 1320 Records family, the 30-year-old Sugalski already has seven albums and a slew of remixes under his belt. The outer-space motif is pervasive, notably Homeboys In Outer Space: Episode I, a remix collection of five early ’90s hip-hop tracks with the Polish touch. Episode II will be released in January, featuring artists like Dead Prez, Lupe Fiasco and the Beastie Boys, and like Episode I, it will be a free release.

Sugalski has given away everything in his catalog for free at some point, announcing bargains to his fans via social networking — an album for reaching a certain number of fans, a new remix for some inspiring words, a debut at a show if they ask nicely.

“I always give opportunities to get stuff for free. A lot of it is paid for but doesn’t mean I can’t create some allowances on my website for maybe a few days to get it for free,” Sugalski says. “I think it’s fun for people; we live in this unique age where if enough people collectively decide that this is worth voting for, they can totally help artists out and artists can get their piece out there, but at the same time everyone gets something they want, and in this case it’s free music. It’s a beautiful thing and a great way to get music out to your fans. I’m an ambassador, and it’s my duty!”

Fishbone film tells story of pioneering African American punk band

veryday Sunshine tells the sometimes tragic, often-funny story of Fishbone, a band from Los Angeles that influenced many, yet never found a way to mainstream

Fishbone is one of those bands that doesn’t belong to one particular genre, prompting critics and listeners to over-hyphenate when describing the band. Ska, punk, metal, reggae and funk all found their way into the Fishbone stew, which made the group members somewhat outsiders as the band paid its dues in South Central Los Angeles as hip-hop was becoming a cultural phenomenon.

The members of Fishbone met in 1979, when the city of Los Angeles began integrating public schools by busing students from the poor, predominantly black neighborhoods of South Central L.A. into the more affluent neighborhood schools of the San Fernando Valley. Bassist Norwood Fisher and his brother, drummer Philip “Fish” Fisher, were jamming and trying to start a band at their new middle school.

Enter Angelo Moore, raised in a white neighborhood by his Jehovah’s Witness mother. He begged Norwood to let him in the band, and though Moore always smiled and was, as Norwood says in the documentary, “devoid of hood sense,” Norwood let him join the band.

“We listened to all kinds of music, period, and punk rock was one of those kinds of music,” Norwood tells Boulder Weekly. “Punk rock was a sound that emerged as we were teenagers, so the way the media looked at punk rock just engaged our curiosity as youths. …

Punk rock scared the fuck out of old people, man.”

“hand-to-mouth,” watching the bands they influenced, such as No Doubt, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Primus, achieve spectacular success.

Narrated by Laurence Fishburne, Everyday Sunshine tells that story, including when, during the few years the documentary was shot, Moore moved in with his mother. When directors Chris Metzler and Lev Anderson initially approached the band, then anchored by original members Norwood Fisher and Moore, with the idea to do the documentary, the band was skeptical — they weren’t dead yet, so why film a documentary?

“My initial reaction was that we can’t put a cap on the story because we’re still writing it,” Fisher tells Boulder Weekly. “To be honest, the band was not in a very good place, and I felt we were on a curve going up, and I wanted to finish that before we started telling the story. … I think it’s killer, overall. At the end of the day, it’s an honest piece.”

Directors Chris Metzler and Lev Anderson deftly tell the band’s story through a series of incredibly candid interviews with current and former members, interviews with bands influenced by the group, live concert footage and some vintage home videos. At times, they use more experimental techniques, such as Fat Albert-

style animation and creepy oil paintings to tell facets of the story.

The strangest and most tragic part of the band’s story revolves around original guitarist Kendall Jones, who left the band in 1993 shortly after his mother died. The other band members say that Jones’ father, a religious nut who supposedly had multiple wives, brainwashed Jones into coming to live with him.

Fisher, worried about the welfare of his friend, tried to stage an intervention and force Jones into treatment, a debacle that led to kidnapping charges and a public trial. Fisher and everyone else involved, including other band members and Jones’ brothers, were eventually acquitted, but no one in the band saw Jones again for more than a decade.

Then, out of nowhere, Jones appeared at a show in front of the film crew. The reunion makes for one of the most touching scenes in the documentary.

“It was one of those weird situations where as a filmmaker, you wonder how much your presence affects things,” Metzler says.

The crew tried to ask Jones whether he was still involved with his father’s group, and Jones avoided the question. “The specifics are a little difficult to ascertain.

Kendall attended a screening of the film a couple weeks ago … and someone, during the Q-and-A, asked him what did he learn from the experience,” Metzler says.

“He said it’s OK to leave a band for drugs and alcohol, but it’s not OK to leave the band for Jesus.”

The documentary is a captivating look at a group that paid the price for demanding total creative control of its music. No matter whether you’ve heard of Fishbone, which plays Cervantes’ Other Side on Nov. 17, the documentary is inspiring and engrossing, and it is a captivating, beautifully told look into the struggles of perpetual outsiders trying to make it in the music business without compromising their identities.

Lykke Li’s bizarre pop will have you dreaming of psychedelic windmills

that preceded it. The songs bustle with vibrancy, but the mood is darker and suffused with a sense of lost innocence.

“I’m sure there’s some degree of innocence that’s taken away when someone in your life is all of sudden gone because of a tragic accident. Everyone has to go through that at some point. For a lot of us, that was our first big one,” Lawn says. “In that sense there was maybe some innocence lost. Now when we write music, we try to still stay true to John, like ‘What would John do?’”

Last year the band released The Orchard, which emerges from the darkness with a brighter, more dulcet, meditative sound. While the syncopated rhythms still bubble beneath the surface, there’s more sweep and swell than rock attack. The songs still pulse, but have moved toward a beatific elegance that’s punctuated with guitar, not driven by it.

The album’s title is taken from the upstate New York peach orchard where they spent a month writing and recording the album. The titular orchard offered refuge from the hardships of the road, and it bears some responsibility for the album’s softer tone.

“The environment was beautiful, so I think that had a play in it,” Lawn says.

For Lawn it represents her attempt at singing, unveiling a sultry, alabaster soprano on “You and I Know.” It’s gotten her creative juices flowing, even if it was harrowing at first to step up to the microphone on tour.

“It was nerve-wracking, but it’s opened up the door with me, and made me a little more confident with my own songwriting and singing. Things have gotten a lot more interesting,” she says. “We’ve got a lot of demos of songs done, and we’re about ready to get into the studio.”

There’s a sense with Ra Ra Riot that they’re on the cusp of big things, just a few steps behind Vampire Weekend, verging on mainstream familiarity.

here’s nothing that compares to Scandinavian pop. Whether it’s a deep appreciation of the arts, the stunning landscape all around or the harsh winter season that forces songwriters inside to write for much of the year, the region produces some of the most beautiful and weirdest pop albums year after year.

Lykke Li has provided two more pillars in that movement with her debut, Youth Novels, in 2008, and Wounded Rhymes earlier this year.

The 25-year-old Swedish songstress constructs electronic pop arrangements bolstered by

orchestration both whimsical and tender, and the corresponding acclaim has her headlining coast to coast on her current tour with First Aid Kit as they stop at the Ogden Theatre on Friday, Nov. 11.

Despite the growing audience and positive attention that comes with late-night television slots and major festivals like Coachella and Lollapalooza, Li says the darker profile on Wounded Rhymes is only a lighter shade of what’s to come. Running back Rodney Stewart is the only player in Colorado history to ever amass over 500 rushing and receiving yards in a single season. Stewart is the only player in the NCAA to have accomplished the feat this season.

CU has an advantage going into Saturday’s matchup with the Wildcats. When head coach Jon Embree hired his staff, he selected two members of Arizona’s coaching staff to fill voids in Boulder. Defensive line coach Mike Tuiasosopo spent seven years in Tuscon and defensive coordinator Greg Brown left Boulder in 2009 only to return a year later.

“I just get leery on concussion guys, saying they’re back,” Embree said. “Until they run around and are not afraid to hit, I don’t count on those guys. Sometimes they are back, and then the first play they hit somebody and they are out for the game.”

Despite the Buffs losing by 41, 28, 43, 34, and 25 points in their past five games, Embree is looking ahead to his 28 seniors finishing their careers on a high note.

“I feel for them, I do, but they can still win their final home game. They can

still end the road losing streak,” he said. “I went to a bowl game my senior year, but I didn’t win my last game here at Folsom Field and that still kind of bothers me.

There is still some stuff out there for them, and I expect they will have a great effort on Saturday and do what we can do to get them to sing that fight song afterwards.”

And as senior night looms closer, what will Embree remember about his group of seniors, who have endured four losing seasons and coaching and conference transitions?

“The want-to in this group, the adversity that they have faced. They’ve played hurt; they’ve played beat-up. I will remember them as a group that really wanted to try and get things done and help set this program on the right path.”

Buffs’ spikers take sets from top teams

T

he days of consistent 0-3 losses for the University of Colorado volleyball team appear to be over.

After a fairly successful four-game road trip, CU returned home to face Stanford and California, both top 10 teams.

In both matches the Buffs started out strong, nearly winning the first set, but it was the second set where the Buffs showed their electric potential, using aggressive serving and an attacking mentality to put their opponent away, winning their first two sets at home in Pac-12 play.

“It’s a glimpse of greatness every single time,” said senior captain Kerra Schroeder. “We know we can do it.”

As CU continues its strong play in the second half of the double roundrobin Pac-12 schedule, they have an advantage in that many teams expect the Buffs to roll over, and are taken aback when they see CU’s high level of play.

“When we are coming this hard at teams, they’re kind of thrown back,” said middle blocker Nikki Lindow.

“Like, ‘Whoa, this is Colorado, what are they doing?’ It’s starting to work, and it’s wearing on them.”

The fact that the Buffs are able to keep spirits high despite a 5-20 record, including a 0-17 mark in conference, is a testament to CU’s dedication to build for the future.

Yesterday, the Buffs signed the highest-rated volleyball class in the program’s history. Members include Fairview High School’s Nicole Edelman, an Olympic level setter; Alexis Austin, a middle blocker from Texas; and Chelsey Keoho, a skilled defensive specialist from Hawaii.

Even though there is no postseason to motivate the Buffs down the

stretch, CU’s effort will undoubtedly continue to be strong.

“The season’s running short on us here,” said head coach Liz Kritza.

“We’re running out of time, so there’s a sense of urgency about it. It’s not enough just to compete and to be showing progress, and I think that’s what’s helping us to get better and really to stay positive and keep these kids going.”

Perhaps no Buff embodies a positive mindset better than sophomore defensive specialist Elysse Richardson.

Richardson, who stands at a “generous” 5 feet, 2 inches, has been perhaps CU’s most improved player through Pac-12 play, and she accompanies her skill by playing with a positive attitude not seen enough in sport.

Richardson was put in a tough position against Cal at the very end of the match when CU ran out of subs, and Richardson was forced to play in the front row. Having received a set, Richardson swung as hard as she could, hitting the ball just long, giving the match to the Golden Bears. Instead of moping about her poor fortune, Richardson shrugged off the miss.

“The littlest one out there seems to have the most fight,” Kritza said.

“The response she had was exactly what the team has to have, of ‘Great, I’m [5-feet, 2-inches], playing against a [6-foot, 5-inch] player,’ just going with everything that she has. It’s exactly the mentality that we have to have.”

Colorado goes on the road to face Arizona and Arizona State. The Buffs were extremely competitive with the Sun Devils when they faced them earlier in the season, losing in three sets, all by the score of 23-25.

Snapshots from the rum haze

J

ohnny Depp was a pal of the late Hunter S. Thompson, and the frustrating but thickly atmospheric film version of Thompson’s early novel The Rum Diary finds Depp and writerdirector Bruce Robinson paying tribute to the author, freelance gonzo journalist, career substanceingester and lifelong alcohol sponge.

The undertaking was a labor of love. The results are more a labor of “like, in parts,” but they certainly don’t resemble anything else on screen at the moment.

Thompson wrote The Rum Diary in 1959. For a brief spell he resided in Puerto Rico, living hard and fast in Bacardiville, writing for a rag called El Sportivo and attempting, and failing, to find work at the English-language San Juan Star.

Out of these facts came Thompson’s wish-fulfillment novel, in which the autobiographical figure, Paul Kemp, is a Star reporter who falls in with the lover of a ruthless American developer.

Robinson streamlines the character roster so that Kemp’s adventures provide the through-line, led by his Don Quixote/Sancho Panza routine with his confidant and conscience, the photojournalist Sala (Michael Rispoli). The writer-director of The Rum Diary is best known for the worst-vacationever classic Withnail & I, which is practically a religion in England and has its ardent fans (including me) here in America. Robinson has directed only

three films since then, the last “unmentionable” one (Robinson’s own description) being Jennifer 8, nearly 20 years ago.

At its best, the fractious Withnail magic resurfaces in the sunnier climes of The Rum Diary. Shot on loca-

tion in Puerto Rico, the film scampers after Depp’s reporter (his editor is played by Richard Jenkins, in the world’s finest lousy toupee) as he tests his ethics against those of the developer, played by Aaron Eckhart, and the developer’s thrill-seeking mistress, played by Amber Heard.

There isn’t a sophisticated or “adult” perspective to be found in The Rum Diary. Though made by seasoned pros, it derives from a novel written by Hunter when he was a veteran hellion of 22. Depp brings everything he can to the role, except the raw-youth part. (If only he’d made it around the time he made the film version of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas!)

It’s evident Depp shot The Rum Diary in the wake of his Pirates of the Caribbean juggernaut — some of the double takes he owes to Jack Sparrow and no one else. It’s equally evident Depp’s amusement and engagement with scoundrels and rakes of all types can anchor even a wobbly film.

The best thing that can come out of The Rum Diary? Another project for Bruce Robinson, that’s what.

Unnecessary 3-D

C

omic effrontery is the Bic that lights the bong in the Harold & Kumar movies, but willfully strained outrageousness can turn sour like that.

For a definition of “that,” there’s A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas, the weakest of the three.

Here, the boy-men — now 30-ish menboys, dealing with adult concerns and relationships, in addition to their perpetual White Castle jones — hunt down a Christmas tree, mix it up with Ukrainian gangsters, briefly turn into Claymation-type animated versions of themselves, consort with virgins and meet Santa.

And reunite with Neil Patrick Harris, who leads a lascivious Rockettes-style musical number. Which has its moments. Unlike the movie surrounding it.

The whole point of these films is that they’re scattershot and willing to try any stupid thing they can.

directed the new one, in 3-D; it was written by Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schossberg, who gave us the worthwhile one, Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle in 2004, and the first disappointing sequel, Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay in 2008.) A dispirited air, however, smothers the fun from the start this time. Tense, bourgeois Harold ( John Cho) and

unemployed slacker Kumar (Kal Penn) reunite under duress, and the movie engineers the realization they’re destined to be BFFs as long as the sequels hold out.

They may be holding out, but they’re not exactly holding up. The chief running gag concerns an infant who accidentally ingests a tremendous amount of cocaine and other substances over the course of the 90-minute misadventure. Is that even funny in theory?

The first H&K caught people off-guard with its canny idiocy and zigzagging, picaresque treasure hunt premise. By now, there’s no catching anyone off-guard with these two, except by way of the most off-color and offputting means possible. Harris, at least, brings a cynical brio to his scenes. But the 3-D only makes the general not-funniness that much closer.

Italian-style pizza booming in Boulder

t’s clear that people in Boulder love pizza. Not just any kind of pizza, but authentic Italian pizza. And the city’s restaurant scene has seen an uptick in places that offer it.

Boulder’s newest restaurant that serves Italian-style pizza is Tossa, which opened its doors on Oct. 26 to many waiting customers. Yet there are many other pizzerias blocks away that also have loyal customers, in part because each restaurant has its own unique style of Italian pizza.

Some pizzerias in Boulder want their pizza to be an exact replica of what a customer is likely to find in Italy. Pizzeria Locale sent its head pizza chef to Naples for four months to work in several pizzerias there, says Cristin Napier of Pizzeria Locale. The restaurant uses a dough-proofing box which is set to the temperature and humidity of Naples, and the dough sits in it for a 24-hour period, says Napier.

“The texture is almost identical to what you’d find in Naples,” she says. “We’re just trying to create the exact experience you’d have in Naples. People are really happy about it.”

Pizzeria Locale doesn’t cut its pizzas, to add to the authentic Italian feel. In addition, the rare artisan oven that cooks the pizzas was made in Naples and allows for extremely high heat, which is an important aspect in its “Napoletana”-style pizzas, Napier says.

Pizzeria da Lupo also models its dough off of Naples. Flour is brought directly over from Naples, where the dough is prepared over three days, says Jim Cohen, chef and owner of the restaurant. While his pizzas have several aspects of Naples, Cohen says that his pizzas are not classic Neapolitans because of the temperature that he cooks the pizzas, and the way he prepares his dough.

“I don’t think you can just say, ‘There’s an Italian pizza,’” he says. “They are all different.”

oil directly from Italy. He says it is used as both a starter and a finisher when preparing his pizzas. Both Pizzeria da Lupo and Pizzeria Locale use a very simple sauce made from pureed San Marzano tomatoes, which are grown near Naples.

“I just try to buy great ingredients and keep it simple,” Cohen says. “We’ve had a really positive reaction. People seem to love the pizza.”

At Pizzeria Basta, the Neapolitan pizza approach is a little different. The dough is made from the same flour that Italians use in their pizza — called “00 flour” — but Kelly Whitaker, owner and chef of the restaurant, wants to have his own take on the pizzas.

“Basta is a chef-driven restaurant,” he says. “We make a version of pizza that is ours. It’s Naplesinfluenced, but it’s not Naples pizza.”

An important aspect of Pizzeria Basta’s pizzas is the way they are cooked. The restaurant, like most of the other pizzerias, uses a wood-fired oven. Heat is important because it adds a difference in taste, says Whitaker, and he strives to catch the char flavor that is found in many Italian pizzas.

The Italian style is given an American taste at Tossa, says Tom Ryan, founder of both Tossa and Smashburger. The restaurant offers customers traditional pizzas such as cheese and pepperoni, signature Italian pizzas and a build-your-own pizza option.

“Our approach is to have a very modern, differentiated pizza,” Ryan says. “What we are doing is authentic Italian pizzas done in an American way.”

Tossa offers several unique pizzas that go beyond a traditional Margherita pizza. The restaurant offers salad pizzas, for instance.

“We wanted to skew fresh and lighter in general,” Ryan says.

At Proto’s Pizzeria in North Boulder, the pizza has a balanced ingredient base, so everything can be tasted, says Kim Homer, the restaurant’s general manager. And unlike the other pizzerias, Proto’s uses a brick-fired oven to ensure that their thin-crust Neapolitan pizzas are evenly cooked.

“We use high-quality, fresh ingredients,” she says.

“We want it to be like an Italian experience from start to finish.”

With this kind of variety, Boulder customers are bound to find a pizza that will cater to their exact tastes.

And since these restaurants’ pizzas range from $7 to $18, it’s a whole lot cheaper than a flight to Italy.

Southern Indian seasonings

ne of my more illadvised college misadventures involved a midnight competition with a classmate to see who could consume the most Tabasco sauce straight. While I prevailed, I learned a valuable lesson (actually one of several) in that heat for heat’s sake isn’t a good thing. The best spicy dishes are ones that don’t up your fiery pain so much that you can’t enjoy the rest of your meal, and are tempered by other intriguing flavors lurking beneath the surface.

I recalled this youthful indiscretion during a visit to Boulder’s new Tiffin’s restaurant, which spotlights vegetarian southern Indian street fare.

The bulk of what’s touted as Indian food is primarily northern Indian, and its southern analog tends towards lighter but potent flavors, and stresses such seasonings as ginger and tamarind.

Not everything here rates high on the spice quotient, and peppery flavors are expertly balanced out by subtle, cooling influences. As a matter of fact, the skillful melding of ingredients easily catapults Tiffin’s into the first tier of local Indian restaurants, and some may quickly discover it becomes their favorite. Of course, the strip mall cafeteria atmosphere probably won’t help that impression, but the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff more than compensate for the ambience.

Being a novice of southern Indian food, I asked for an assortment of representative dishes for our party of five. I’d recommend going with a larger group, as this provides ample opportunity to treat the many offerings as small plates, and to identify favorite dishes for future visits. Rustic Apple and Cheddar Pie

A

ll right, enough is enough.

Pumpkin recipes are done for now (until I change my mind, of course). We had a lot of fun though, didn’t we? I’m still in the pumpkin mood, but time to move along and give you fine people something new. How about something that will make your humble abode smell like a big warm hug from cousin Helen? I don’t know why Helen came to mind, but that name just brings on images of a big bear-type of hugger. Although most Helens I know are little, so it is beyond me why I picture a nice stout woman giving you all hugs. Good grief, you would think I would spend my time worrying about more important things (like chocolate), but I’m not gonna lie, I don’t.

OK, on to the dessert. This week, the big warm hug will be administered, not

by Helen, but by Rustic Apple and Cheddar Pie. Can I get an Amen?

Apple pie without cheese is like a kiss without a squeeze. That’s what I hear anyway.

I’m sure most of you have enjoyed a slice of sharp cheddar with your pie, but for those who haven’t, well, you are in for a treat. We aren’t serving the cheese up as an accompaniment, but melted right there on the top. This is a salty-sweet combo that will have you begging for more. Well, if you are the one making it, then I guess you won’t have to beg, but you get what I’m saying. How about, people will be begging you? Yes, that makes more sense.

This is a fall treat that works fine and dandy with the holidays. For all you antipumpkin pie peeps, this recipe will become your go-to. Don’t be whining about the absence of whipped cream or ice cream with the pie because it’s cheesy. Trust me, a little vanilla ice cream or homemade whipped cream fits right into this wicked good combo. Remember, salty and sweet is always a treat. Throw all you think you know about apple pie out the door.

This is the rustic version, which just means I slapped the dough right on a baking sheet, piled up the apples (granny smiths, holla) in the middle, folded over the edges a bit and zappo, bake and eat.

If you really want to try something different, add blue cheese instead of the cheddar. This isn’t for the faint of heart.

It’s my favorite, but I’m starting you out slow, breaking you in with the cheddar. If

you love it, and want to advance, please try the blue cheese. There will forever be a place for you at my dinner table if you like it; you will forever be my people. If that doesn’t get you to throw some stinky cheese on your pie, nothing will.

Now, follow the directions, put some love into it, and invite me over when it’s done.

Rustic Apple & Cheddar Pie Crust 1-1/2 cups flour 1/2 tsp. salt 1-1/2 tbsp. sugar 1/2 cup unsalted butter 4-5 tbsp. water (cold) Filling 4-5 apples (cored and sliced, peel on) 3/4 cup sugar 1-1/2 tsp. cinnamon 1/2 tsp. cloves 1/2 tsp. allspice 1-1/3 tbsp. lemon juice 1 tbsp. melted butter (to brush on crust) 1-2 thick slices of cheddar cheese (I used sharp cheese)

Mix first three crust ingredients together in food processor (or large bowl, and use a pastry blender) slowly pulse in butter until somewhat incorporated.

Slowly add in water, 1 tbsp. at a time, until dough forms.

Take out, and shape into ball. Wrap in plastic wrap and place in fridge while making filling, or for at least 15 minutes.

Mix, apples, sugar, cinnamon, cloves and allspice in large bowl. Add in lemon juice, and toss to combine. Preheat oven to 375.

Take out dough, flatten into disc (about 1/4 inch thick), and place on baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Pile up apple mixture in center. Gently fold up edges of crust all the way around just until crust touches apples. Brush crust with melted butter. Sprinkle sugar and cinnamon on top.

Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until apples are bubbling and crust is turning golden. Take out and place cheese on top.

Bake another 5 to 10 minutes until cheese is melted. Take out, and let cool.

Cut into wedges. Serve warm or at room temperature. Enjoy!

Emich triplets open new restaurant A new restaurant will try to succeed in a location on 13th Street where many have failed, as Boulder restaurateurs the Emich triplets open Shine Restaurant and Gathering Place.

The eatery’s location, 2027 13th St., has changed hands at least five times since 2009, from RedFish to the Colorado Brewing Company to the Boulder Draft House to Los Oasis, which closed in September.

Shine will separate itself from past occupants in a few ways, says co-founder Jill Emich, who along with sisters Jennifer and Jessica, hopes to build on the success of former Boulder restaurant Trilogy.

Most notably, Shine will benefit from a strong working relationship with landlord Stephen Tebo, founder and owner of Tebo Development, which owns the property. If high rent contributed to other restaurants failing in the space, Jill Emich says, the owner has offered to help Shine.

“We’ve worked with him in the past and he was very willing to work with us on what we can do in that space,” she says. “We said, ‘This is what we can do numbers-wise,’ and he worked with us on that.”

In the back, Shine will host live music and dancing, Emich says, with an emphasis on the flexibility of the space.

“The space is very versatile. It’s going to be live music, private events, private parties, all kinds of stuff,” she says. “The stage is being custombuilt so we can move it around and have more room for dancing, and if it’s a bigger band we can accommodate that.”

March of Dimes to feature Boulder’s top chefs The area’s top chefs will show off their skills at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 15, at the March of Dimes Signature Chef ’s Auction at the Omni Interlocken Resort in Broomfield.

The event will benefit the nonprofit organization’s programs for promoting healthy moms and babies, and reducing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.

The featured chefs of the event include Fabio Flagiello of Bácaro,

Matthew Jansen and Justin Anthony of Mateo and Radda, Kevin Kidd of SALT, Lachlan MackinnonPatterson of Frasca Food and Wine, Hugo Matheson of The Kitchen, Salvatore Proia of the Bitter Bar, Matt Tobin of Tahona Tequila Bistro & Pearl Street Steak Room and Mike Trimmer of Brasserie Ten Ten. Ted’s to offer turkey meal This Thanksgiving, the Boulder location of Ted’s Montana Grill will be serving a three-course classic turkey meal for guests who want to skip the cooking.
