t’s one of the wonderful problems to have in Colorado: picking the best place to ski or snowboard. Colorado boasts 26 major ski areas that range from the modest Howelsen Hill to the epic bowls of Vail. Picking the best ones for your style, budget and time can be tricky. Are you looking for steep ’n’ deep or long, moderate cruisers? Terrain parks or family friendly? Powder or groomers?

The Black Mountain Express will reach mid-mountain in just under three minutes, cutting the time to get on the hill and ending the tradition of ditching the fourth member of your crew with a bunch of weirdos behind you in the lift line. As the classic local’s ski area, A-Basin remains

relatively free of the crowds that clog lift lines at nearby resorts.

The dog-friendly beach parking area and close metro-area access over Loveland Pass make A-Basin a favorite among Coloradans.

Opened in 1947, it remains the classic Colorado ski area with a fine blend of bumps, steeps, groomers and trees. In other words, there are runs for every style of skier and rider. The fact you can end your day by skiing directly into town (or the nearest pub) is pretty sweet.

Keystone’s vast terrain and excellent hike-to and cat skiing are tons of fun. Lots of quality groomers and steep trees in the deepest part of the resort add to the variety. Be warned, when there are big crowds on icy and clear days, even the moderate blue runs become fields of carnage due to the shadowy cold that highlights a lot of the connecting runs between lifts. But on a good powder day, you may find yourself playing on the mountain well into the night skiing session!

Loveland has also been gradually improving its terrain parks, giving the mountain a little bit of everything at a reasonable price;

Note that Powderhorn does cover more than 1,600 acres in prime winter conditions. The lower elevations give it a northeast U.S. feel (minus the horrible, bulletproof Vermont ice).

Silverton offers guided tours to help get the feel of this unique mountain, a place unlike anywhere else in North America.

Colorado ski company loves the outdoors — a lot

olorado’s Liberty Skis started, literally, with the roll of the dice. While the metaphor is useful for many a startup, few can claim that the seed funding came from a craps table in Vegas. The story goes like this: Liberty Skis’ founders Jim Satloff and Dan Chalfant were at the Snowsports Industry trade show (SIA, now hosted by Denver after its Sin City run), developing plans for a new ski brand. After a day on the floor of the show, they hit the craps table. Satloff’s head for numbers dovetailed with the fact that craps have the best odds in the house. And $20,000 later, Liberty was born.

Now, six years later, Liberty is a fullfledged brand, having graduated from a “boutique” offering for small specialty shops to a company with a global distribution system that includes Japan, Switzerland and Australia and a team of pro riders that are

making headlines. This is all great, of course, but there’s more to Liberty than just one lucky roll on a steamy night in Vegas.

“We wanted to make skis that we liked to ski on,” says Chalfant.

“It’s always been about skiers making skis for other skiers.”

Chalfant points to the fact that the company doesn’t make skis for beginners, and while intermediates can use and enjoy the skis, the fact that every model in Liberty’s lineup is performance-oriented means that the better you are, the more you’ll appreciate the ride.

“We’re obsessively focused on performance,” adds Chalfant. “We want to make skis that perform the best, no matter if you ride

powder or park or just like to ski the whole mountain.”

It’s true that there’s not a lot of static in Liberty’s lineup. The brand keeps things simple with a core collection of just six models, far less than you’d find from, say, Salomon. The company also keeps things fun, with similar graphics in different colors depending on the length of the model, and pays attention to the ladies, with the specially designed Jinx.

The heart of Liberty, though, is bamboo. This environmentally friendly material is featured throughout the line, and coupled with poplar, makes for incredibly light, poppy and responsive skis.

“Bamboo is an amazing material,” says Chalfant. “It’s incredibly strong, has great life to it and is very, very light, which is perfect for skis. But best of all, it is a sustainable resource, as it grows

very quickly. You harvest it, and it regenerates. It’s as simple as that.”

However, bamboo is only one part of the puzzle when it comes to Liberty’s commitment to the environment. The company uses wind power across the board, from its factories to its offices.

“We’re in a business where you have to care about the planet,” says Chalfant. “Global warming is a major deal when it comes to the future viability of our sport.

While we can’t, as a brand, have zero impact on the planet with the technology available to us today, we try to mitigate the impact that we have as a company to the maximum extent we can.”

Still, the ultimate question for every skier is, “can you turn the damn things when you want to?”

Tricked-out training facility helps improve aerial awareness

I

’ve strapped on my snowboard for the first time in two years, and I’m standing at the top of a man-made jump staring downwards at an intimidating 42-degree slope.

I’ve snowboarded for 12 years — I traded last year’s snow season for a two-month jaunt around South America — but I’ve always preferred going down a hill to soaring above it. What the hell am I doing at the top of this 35-foot hill?

Of course, it’s mid-October and unseasonably warm outside the Woodward at Copper Barn, Copper Mountain’s 20,000-squarefeet aerial training facility, and I’m not standing on snow but rather a rough, snow-like substance called “Snowflex.” Instead of a foreboding landing of solid ice, thousands of welcoming blue foam blocks wait in a pit below. I realize it’s not the most intimidating scenario, but still, as I stare down at the coarse, welcome-mat-like strings of fake snow beneath me, I can’t help but notice how much gentler the slope looked from the bottom.

The instructor urges me just to sideslip down the surface of the material, to get better acquainted with how to ride it. Easy, right?

The most basic snowboarding move. I take a deep breath and dig my heels into the slope as I go down the hill, making jarring screeching noises as my board passes through the Snowflex. I fall on my ass almost immediately and zoom down the hill, the thorny shards of Snowflex poking through my thin bike gloves. It’s humbling, especially after seeing kids barely half my age nail the slope with ease. But I try again — and again — and I finally make it. While I can’t say I was the quickest learner, it seems pretty clear that spending a few weekends in The Barn would be the easiest and safest way to build the confidence needed to start progressing and landing some sweet tricks outside when the

snow starts to fall.

Woodward at Copper opened in February 2009, the first indoor facility in the country dedicated to aerial training for snow sports.

Within its 20,000 square feet are jumps into the foam pit; a separate hill hitting a few rails and leveling off into a quarter pipe; a soft, springy floor for tumbling, reminiscent of what they use for floor routines in Olympic gymnastics; a small half pipe and a 6- to 8-foot pool for skating; and various trampolines for practicing tumbling in the air.

The facility is the result of a partnership between Copper Mountain and Camp Woodward, a company that operates training facilities for mountain biking, gymnastics, surfing, skating, in-line skating and other sports at five locations — four in the U.S. and one in Beijing. Woodward at Copper is the first winter sports facility connected to Camp Woodward, and it claims to be the first training facility of its kind to open anywhere in the world.

Woodward at Copper offers a slew of day-long and week-long camps aimed at all ages, though Program Director Phoebe Mills says most people using the “barn,” as the building is called, are 8 to

25 years old. (Fun fact: Mills won bronze on the balance beam in South Korea in 1988.) The bread and butter of Woodward, though, are the one-hour, 45-minute “drop-in” sessions for $29.99, when guests have unlimited access to the facilities and can spend all the time they’d like perfecting tricks and tumbling techniques in the safety of the foam pits. But before you get access to the dropin sessions, you have to take an introductory class, which you can get through any of the camps or through a $59.99, two-hour “onehit wonder” session.

I start out one of these one-hit wonder sessions in a small group.

Our instructor leads the group onto a springy, soft mat that gives slightly underneath your heels as you walk. All of us in the class — two elementary-aged kids and their dad, a few teens and I — instantly start jumping up and down on our toes, familiarizing ourselves with the new surface.

We practice a safety move called a candlestick roll, to practice cushioning falls on our rounded backs instead of our wrists and elbows.

Then we practice a cowboy tuck, a method to maximize rotation speed while airborne, not to mention avoiding taking a knee to the

chin. Then we attempt to do cartwheels. After an agonizing five minutes of that, our instructor mercifully has us move on to the fun stuff — tumbling and trampolines.

It’s like elementary school gym class all over again, with all the somersaulting and cheese wedges.

The instructor handles the kids with grace and patience. We take turns rolling forward and backward, and then we’re told we’ll have to swim across the foam pits in an activity called a “pit race.”

“Pit race!” whoops a nearby instructor, excited by the prospect.

The vibe is very much summer-day-camp cheesy, but I can indulge this, because there are some tykes in the class, as well as the fact that it’s actually pretty difficult to swim across a foam pit.

Plus, on the other side are the springiest trampolines I’ve ever felt, and it’s incredibly easy to get 10 or 12 feet of air. More experienced jumpers are pulling some hard-to-believe spins and jumps on the trampolines, and there is a “transfer station” where one can jump from a tramp to a pad to another tramp to a padded wall, pulling all types of tricks on the way.

The one-hit wonder class is a solid introduction to the equipment, and there are coaches stationed around the facility to keep everyone safe during the drop-in sessions. During winter, Woodward at Copper offers a day-long class designed to train you for tricks in the Barn and then on the snow for $169.99, which includes lunch and a lift ticket ($129.99 without the lift ticket). Private sessions with coaches are available as well, starting with $59.99 for a onehour session in the barn to $99.99 for an hour-and-45-minute session.

When riding the lifts gets dull, try backcountry skiing

W

hen the circuit of freezing on the lift ride up and dodging wobbly Texans on the run down gets dull, it might be time to take a look at the world of backcountry skiing. It offers the lure of the steep and deep with the freedom — and danger — of being alone in the mountains, without rules or ski patrol to save your ass.

Backcountry skiing, also known as ski touring or ski mountaineering, involves hauling yourself into the mountains onto un-maintained, unpatrolled territory. Skiers hike or use skins — fabric attached to the bottom of the ski that allows it to slide up, but not backward — to travel to the top of the slope they want to ski.

“It’s more like exploration or more like a day of hiking,” says Donny Roth, who started backcountry skiing in Colorado in 1993, began guiding in 2004, and now works with the American Mountain Guides Association on their backcountry skiing courses. “The math changes. Rather than sitting in a gondola for 10 minutes and skiing down for 10 minutes, it’s a lot more up than down.”

The process slows, becoming a whole-day affair that rewards the investment of hiking uphill for hours with fresh tracks in powder.

“Generally, what you find is you get something that’s a little bit more satisfying than just doing laps in the ski resort,” Roth says. “If you want to see winter in its true form, there’s not a much better way to do it.”

Like any undertaking in the outdoors, backcountry skiing is dangerous.

Not the danger of accidentally skiing into a tree and letting the ski patrol come toboggan you down to the lift line that accompanies in-bounds skiing. It’s flirting with disaster in the unknown on the scale of a couple tons of snow plowing down over the top of you. Avalanches, Roth says, are the most dramatic of the dangers involved in backcountry skiing.

“It’s a real hazard, certainly, especially in Colorado where avalanche death rates are among the highest in the country and snow conditions can be extremely tender and tricky to read,” Roth says. “It’s manageable.

You can go out backcountry skiing often throughout the winter.You just have to know how to select your terrain carefully.”

At a minimum, a backcountry skier needs to carry a beacon, probe and shovel to be used in avalanche rescue. The beacon is used locate an avalanche victim to within a small area, the probe to pinpoint that person’s location when buried in snow, and the shovel to dig the victim out.

First aid training, a first aid kit, and a partner could be added to that list of essentials.

Attending a level one avalanche-training course is also essential and should be completed about the time a skier enters the backcountry for the first time. The course focuses on use of the beacon, probe and shovel.

There are lots of local options for level one avalanche courses, which run about $300 and take roughly two days to complete, but Roth mentioned looking for courses with curriculum approved by the American Institute of Avalanche Research and Education (ARAIE).

An increasing number of people are embracing the danger and skiing in the backcountry, according to The Ski Industries of America Snow Sports Intelligence Report from 2009, which shows a growing number of sales for alpine touring equipment over the past several years. That means relying on the tested system of mentorship is always an option for firsttimers, as is hiring a guide service like Roth’s own Alpine Ambitions, which he founded in 2007.

Trade your skis for (horse)shoes

ontrary to popular belief, horseback riding is not just for cowboys on hot summer days. In fact, winter horseback riding has become a popular, coldweather attraction for Boulder County residents and visitors alike. Numerous equestrian ranches, stables and liveries provide a fun alternative to a weekend on the slopes this winter. No matter if you’re a beginning rider or a riding veteran, most riding facilities will accommodate your riding abilities — or lack thereof.

Sombrero Ranches, Inc., the largest horse outfitter in Colorado, offers eight locations within reasonable driving distance of Boulder County at Allenspark, Estes Park, Glacier Creek, Grand Lake, Meeker, Moraine Park, Snow Mountain and Steamboat Springs. Created in 1958, Sombrero offers a variety of rides in the natural beauty of the Colorado Rockies without any commercialism: the company doesn’t feature any gift shops or advertising apart from their website.

With more than 1,800 horses, Sombrero indubitably has a horse for every type of rider. Offering one- to eight-hour trail rides daily, riders can experience scenic Colorado trails in vast, untouched Rocky Mountain terrain. The rides are led by knowledgeable guides who have insight into key points of interest, wildlife and Colorado history. Beyond traditional trail rides, Sombrero also boasts breakfast, steak dinner, sleigh and wagon rides. Sleigh rides are limited to the Snow Mountain Ranch location, but what better way to enjoy the snow than in a sleigh pulled by a team of beautiful horses? Riders can enjoy a cup of hot cocoa or a homecooked dinner made by cowboys in a warm dining hall. Prices vary, depending on which ride you embark upon, but one-hour rides start at $35, while the Dinner Sleigh Rides start at $60.

Reservations are required for all winter riding activities.

The Cabin Creek Stables at Devil’s Thumb Ranch in Tabernash are about two hours west of Boulder on I-70 and offer a year round equestrian program that focuses on horsemanship skills and trail riding. Like Sombrero, Cabin Creek has half-or full-day rides, meal tours, and wagon and sleigh rides. The stables have a “shodeo” course, where riders can practice rodeo events like pole bending, barrel racing, egg racing, team penning and horsemanship score. With more than 5,000 acres of riding terrain and reasonable rates, starting at $90 for a half-day ride, Devil’s Thumb Ranch is well worth the two-hour drive.

Closer to Boulder is Peaceful Valley Ranch near Lyons, one of Colorado’s oldest and largest guest ranches. Trails meander along the St. Vrain River, where peaks are prominent and wildlife roams free. Rides vary from one hour to overnight camp-outs in Colorado wilderness. Trails explore the Roosevelt National Forest, Beaver Reservoir, Timberline Falls and many other key destinations. The ranch, however, only offers horseback riding through the fall. Interested riders should check out this nearby attraction before winter truly arrives. Layers of warm clothing, warm socks and durable gloves are recommended for all rides.

Hitting the smaller slopes Where to break in that brand-new sled

or the frugal family or the college student without a trust fund, hitting the slopes is not always a viable option. The cost of ski and snowboard gear adds up when you’re trying to equip a family of four, and the lift tickets to Colorado’s ski resorts are a pretty penny. Not to mention all the gas used to get to and from the resort, and the massive traffic that goes along with it. But that doesn’t mean those who live on a budget can’t have fun in the snow.

Sledding has long been a winter pastime, with folks heading to the closest hill for a day filled with fun. While some local stores have sleds ranging from discs to tubes, the choices are pretty limited. The best place to find a wide variety of sleds would be at specialty online stores like Sledwarehouse.com and Snowsleds.net or mainstream online stores like Amazon.com or DicksSportingGoods.com.

One of the most popular sleds nowadays, according to Snowsled. net, is the inflatable snow bodyboard. The prices can range from $13.95 to more than $200, depending on what brand you choose.

They’re the hot item this season because of the speed a rider can gain going down a hill and the control a rider has while maneuvering the sled.

Also popular are the tubes with the hard plastic bottoms. Hardly anyone uses those old semi-truck inner tubes anymore, which were always hit or miss when trying to slide down the hill and were always at risk for getting punctured. With the hard plastic bottom, the tube is guaranteed to go as fast as the classic disc sleds without the risk of being punctured by rocks. The tubes can start around $10.99, with the high-end tubes costing just under $200.

Of course, there’s always the cheap plastic and metal disc/saucer sleds and plastic toboggans, which are sold in sets of three starting at $24.95. If sledding isn’t something you can do regularly, one of these options might be the right choice because of their affordability.

For those of you who don’t want to wait to get your sled in the mail, McGuckin Hardware also carries a selection of sledding options, particularly the plastic varieties. (For the particularly daring, they also carry spray-on silicone to turn your sled into greased lightning.)

Once you have your gear, where do you go?

The most popular hill in Boulder is at Scott Carpenter Park at 1505 30th St. The hill isn’t super-steep, so it’s not much of a task to spend the day going up and down, and it’s suitable for the little ones.

However, the park can get crowded with sledders. Another option would be the hill at Tantra Park at 46th and Hanover streets in south Boulder. Tantra Park isn’t that steep either, but the hill is longer, making the ride last more than an instant. Plus, at the bottom of the hill there’s some padding that lines the fences just in case you’re going too fast to stop. It’s still recommended you wear a helmet.

If you’re feeling really adventurous, you can hike up to Chautauqua Meadow, which used to be a small ski area, and hit the hillside there. It’s probably the steepest hill available for sledding in the area and not recommended for children.

But with the right gear and proper technique, the seldom-seen winter wilderness offers a pristine world of snowy marvels and crystalline, star-filled nights. To truly enjoy the winter camping experience, it is essential to be well-versed in the art of staying warm and knowledgeable in the methods of staying safe. Camping in sub-freezing temperatures raises the stakes, but with the right skills, it can be a comfortable and thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Where to start If you’ve never camped in winter before, it’s a very good idea to try out your gear in the safety of a backyard or just outside of a vehicle. As you get more comfortable with local/car camping, start with small distance outings of a mile or so into the wilderness. Here you can truly test your systems. Once you’ve had a few nights out and have a good feel for winter camping, open up your world with multiday treks or adventures deeper into the wilderness. A strong knowledge of avalanche and snow conditions goes hand in hand with winter camping safety. Joining more experienced winter campers or organized groups such as the Colorado Mountain Club can help you learn in a safe environment.

In the Boulder area, several national forests are great places to start your winter camping adventures. Brainard Lake, Moffat Tunnel and St. Mary’s Glacier all offer great locations that are close to roads — and your vehicle — should something go awry.

Gear up for winter camping

Winter camping in Colorado should not be taken lightly. Subzero temps, heavy snowfall and biting winds all conspire to freeze out unprepared campers. In truth, a great deal of winter camping is simply staying warm and dry.

Master those two dynamics and you’ve got 90 percent of winter camping down.

Vital to overnight comfort is a warm sleeping set-up. A four-season tent with a strong frame will offer shelter from wind and snow (experienced campers may elect to dig a snow cave, but this should be practiced in daylight before committing to an overnight stay in a cave). A two-pad sleeping system with a base foam layer topped with an inflatable mattress will keep the chill from seeping in from the ground. Most important for safety is a cold-weather sleeping bag. Colorado’s high country can drop well below zero on a regular basis, so if you’re camping in the middle winter months, a bag rated for minus 20 degrees or better is imperative. If you are camping in late March to May (still winter conditions), you may be able to get away with a zero-degree bag, but in general, the warmer rating the better.

A snow shovel must be packed in to dig out a solid tent platform and for avalanche safety.

And after a sleeping bag, the choice of stove can make or break your winter camping experience. Canister stoves that use pressurized butane or iso-butane will be less efficient — or freeze completely — in cold weather conditions. If you are stuck using a twist-on canister-style stove, look for a propane-butane blend fuel. Better still, use a stove that runs on white gas. It will burn hot in all conditions. Ration your fuel to account for all your drinking water (remember ice melts more efficiently than air-filled snow). A good tip is to fill Nalgene-type bottles with hot water and

pack weighted down with the extra heft of winter camping gear.

by James Dziezynski tuck them into your sleeping bag before dozing off (bottles in your bag not only keep you cozy but also guarantee non-frozen drinking water in the morning).

A smart layering system will keep the aspiring winter camper warm and dry. Base layers should wick away sweat and dry quickly. Even in cold conditions, hauling a heavy pack through powder can work up quite a bit of perspiration. Layer with fleece, followed by heavier down jackets/ vests topped by a waterproof Gore-tex-style shell. Keep your head warm with a wool cap, balaclava and a soft fleece neck gaiter (an often overlooked piece of gear). Warm gloves should be worn over glove liners. Long underwear, covered by fleece pants and waterproof shell pants, keep your lower body warm. Winter socks, insulated boots and gaiters all keep your feet from freezing up, while down booties keep your toes toasty in camp.

Unless you’re camping above treeline, it’s wise to build a fire pit and fire. Bringing a firestarter and/or packing in some wood (often on a sled) is a good idea, especially if you are new to winter camping. Be sure to bring lots of high-calorie foods, since staying warm takes a lot of energy.

Finally, make sure you bring maps and know how to read them. A non-electronic compass is important. GPS units are nice, but cold drains batteries extra-fast, so don’t rely solely on electronics. Snowshoes or skis will help you travel more efficiently in snow, especially with a back-

Final Thoughts Winter camping should be taken very seriously. Knowledge, experience and patience are required to avoid suffering at the behest of the unrelenting cold. That being said, winter camping opens up an incredible new world that is unlike any other wilderness experience. Done correctly, winter expeditions can be comfortable and enjoyable. There is nothing quite like the soft, barely perceptible sound of new falling snow at the edge of an alpine lake, or the bright, crisp morning sun reflecting off rolling expanses of untracked powder. Boulder County has a plethora of activities that are perfect for children during the winter months.

From snow sports to local recreation center programs, there are lots of opportunities to get the kids out of the house and moving their bodies, whether it’s after school or on the weekends.

And some are cheap, if not free.

So turn off those video games and get out of the house to experience some of the amazing stuff that the little ones can do in the winter right here in Boulder County.

We get our specimens from Australia and because of the opposite seasons get them only in the winter months.

Play in the snow: The first choice, of course, is to take the kids up to Eldora, whether they prefer one plank or two. Children 5 and under are only $8 for the whole day, and lessons are available for ages 4 and up (www.eldora.com). Aside from skiing and snowboarding, there are a host of snowrelated activities that sometimes go overlooked, like snowshoeing and sledding. Don’t forget making snow forts, snowmen and snow angels in the backyard.

Followed by hot chocolate, of course.

Head to a rec center: The county’s recreation centers and YMCA of Boulder Valley (www. ymcabv.org) offer programs for kids when the playing fields are covered with snow and ice. In addition to mainstream indoor sports like swimming, basketball and volleyball, there are kids’ programs in a variety of other areas, including science, ballet, music and art.

The owl butterflies are closely related to the morphos but are easily distinguished by the one large eyespot on the underside. Like morphos, they are restricted to the New World and feed on overripe fruit.

Ornithoptera priamus New Guinea to Australia The largest butterfly we exhibit and one of the most beautiful. All birdwings are listed as endangered on CITES and cannot be collected from the wild. This species was one of the first birdwings to be bred in captivity and individuals are often released back to the wild to augment the natural populations. You can see these exquisite creatures in our conservatory only from October through May, Australia’s summer months.

Females can be very different from the males in coloration. Common from South Carolina through Florida and the Caribbean along the coast where their host plant Cakile, or sea rocket, grows.

Other host plants in the mustard family are utilized as well.

There are also museums at our local university, like the Heritage Center (cuheritage.org) at the top of Old Main and the CU Museum of Natural History (cumuseum.colorado.edu). And don’t forget the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art (www.bmoca.org) at 1750 13th St. Go ice skating: There are several options for skating in the county, and we recommend the outdoor ones. There’s just something about being bundled up and inhaling that clear, crisp, cold air. And several of these rinks offer skate rental. Visit a climbing gym: There are several to choose from, especially in Boulder, or you could swing by one of the local rec centers that have climbing walls. Kids love to climb, and you don’t really need much gear, since most of these places will provide harnesses and climbing shoes if you need them.

Two places to check out locally for lessons are The Spot Bouldering Gym (www.thespotgym.com) and Boulder Rock Club (www.totalclimbing.com).

Let ’em bounce: Longmont has a place called B&C Bounce Town, at 1821 Lefthand Circle, where you can let your children get all of that excess energy out by running and jumping through inflatable castles, slides and mazes. And you can just chill on a comfy couch nearby with your iPhone. (www. bncbouncers.com)

Take them to the library: I know, I know, this is pretty old school, but, yes, they still have those places where people go to read and check out books. And the county’s libraries have great kids sections for all ages.

There are also story hours where adults read stories aloud, reviving the magic of those days gone by when families gathered together to hear bards tell tall tales and spin yarns. This is a good opportunity to remind your children that life is not just about video games and iPods and TV.

Go bowling: Talk about old school. Longmont and Lafayette still have bowling alleys, and in Boulder you can bowl at The Connection in the University Memorial Center on the CU campus. Centennial Lanes in Longmont is at 110 E. Ninth Ave. (www.centennial-lanes.com), and Lafayette has the Coal Creek Bowling Center at 550 W. South Boulder Rd. (www. coalcreekbowling.com).

Check out the fun center: The Gateway Park Fun Center (www.gatewayfunpark.com) in north Boulder, off of Hwy. 36, is now open yearround, and there are indoor activities if the weather is harsh. This is one of those ultimate playgrounds for kids and adults alike. The center features go-karts, miniature golf, batting cages, a human maze, an arcade, inline hockey and a driving range.

Visit a climbing gym: There are several to choose from, especially in Boulder, or you could swing by one of the local rec centers that have climbing walls. Kids love to climb, and you don’t really need much gear, since most of these places will provide harnesses and climbing shoes if you need them.

Two places to check out locally for lessons are The Spot Bouldering Gym (www.thespotgym.com) and Boulder Rock Club (www.totalclimbing.com).

Let ’em bounce: Longmont has a place called B&C Bounce Town, at 1821 Lefthand Circle, where you can let your children get all of that excess energy out by running and jumping through inflatable castles, slides and mazes. And you can just chill on a comfy couch nearby with your iPhone. (www. bncbouncers.com)

Take them to the library: I know, I know, this is pretty old school, but, yes, they still have those places where people go to read and check out books. And the county’s libraries have great kids sections for all ages.

There are also story hours where adults read stories aloud, reviving the magic of those days gone by when families gathered together to hear bards tell tall tales and spin yarns. This is a good opportunity to remind your children that life is not just about video games and iPods and TV.

Go bowling: Talk about old school. Longmont and Lafayette still have bowling alleys, and in Boulder you can bowl at The Connection in the University Memorial Center on the CU campus. Centennial Lanes in Longmont is at 110 E. Ninth Ave. (www.centennial-lanes.com), and Lafayette has the Coal Creek Bowling Center at 550 W. South Boulder Rd. (www. coalcreekbowling.com).

Check out the fun center: The Gateway Park Fun Center (www.gatewayfunpark.com) in north Boulder, off of Hwy. 36, is now open yearround, and there are indoor activities if the weather is harsh. This is one of those ultimate playgrounds for kids and adults alike. The center features go-karts, miniature golf, batting cages, a human maze, an arcade, inline hockey and a driving range.

Finally, if you want to stray outside of Boulder County, there is a whole world of winter-suited wonder for youngsters in and on the way to Denver, from the Butterfly Pavilion in Westminster (www.butterfies.org) to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science (www.dmns.org) and the Denver Zoo, with its special winter Zoolights displays (www.denverzoo. org).

Winter cycling essentials

s temperatures drop and daylight wanes, many cyclists hang up their bikes for the season and retreat to the sweaty comfort of spinning class. But with winter temps averaging in the mid-40s and plenty of Rocky Mountain sunshine before dusk, dedicated riders can enjoy cranking out miles all year long. The right cold-weather gear and a few minor adjustments to your bike will let you pedal on Old Man Winter’s time.

Road bikes When winter falls in Boulder, many of the favored climbs west of town are too packed with snow, ice and sand to ride. To the east, however, lower elevations and lots of sun exposure offer year-round potential. It’s not unusual to get a 60-degree day in January or February, and you can bet cyclists will be out in droves. Warm days are the exception, however, so prepare for cold weather with the right gear.

Fleece-lined, wind-resistant tights and thicker socks will keep the wind at bay. Gore-tex-style shell pants are a must on slushy days.

Cycling shoes are great for venting heat in the summer, but in cold weather you’ll want a pair of covers/booties to keep toes warm. Some riders find this the biggest obstacle to winter riding and use heat packs in their shoes.

For your torso, layer. A medium-weight, wicking base against the skin should be followed with warmer fleece layers. Feel free to wear a looser fitting jersey over your layers (to hold tools and energy snacks) or a wind-proof shell. Perhaps most important is a balaclava and a thin but warm beanie to keep your head, face and ears warm under your helmet. Complete the look with thicker, full-fingered gloves. For especially cold days, lobster-style insulated mitts are warmest.

If you’re riding on sandy/icy roads, consider switching out road slicks for treaded tires. While not as speedy as slicks, they grip better on icy patches and shed sticky sand. And insulated water bottles not only keep cold drinks cold, they keep hot drinks hot.

Commuter bikes Commuters essentially have the same layer and tire issues as road riders. Since they likely won’t be pushing as hard, overheating from the inside isn’t as much of an issue for commuters. Ensure you have a good lighting system — both front and back — to be seen on bike paths and in bike lanes. Redundant lights are an excellent idea to make yourself as visible as possible.

Mountain bikes Mountain bikers need to adopt the same layering philosophy as roadies. Trails are often frozen hard, so knee, shin and elbow pads (and of course a helmet) are highly encouraged. Since mountain bikers are prone to falling more on snowy and icy trails, make sure base layers wick well and dry quickly. Gore-tex shells for top and bottom are a good idea. If you can’t get out before sunset, investing in a high-quality lighting system lets you light up the night, and don’t skimp on quality if you want to stay safe. Studded tires can be bought (or made) to ensure extra grip. Lastly, consider insulated water bottles or an insulated tube system for Camelbaks to keep your precious H2O from freezing.

Hot styles, cold weather It’s all about colors and layering

s cold weather approaches, winter clothing emerges at your favorite boutiques and from the depths of your closets. Although it’s easy to slip on jeans and an oversized jacket to combat the cold temperatures, there are other options. The keys to effective winter fashion are layering and color correlation.

Contrary to popular belief, wearing dresses and skirts is just as feasible as pants during the winter months. If you’re going to wear a dress or skirt, start with a base of a warm under layer like a cotton slip. Not only will it keep your dress or skirt in place better, it will contribute to the proceeding layers of your outfit.

Instead of wearing a cardigan over your dress, try pairing a strappy or strapless dress with a collared, button-down shirt underneath. This way, the dress’s best assets won’t be concealed and you won’t be shivering outside. When wearing a skirt, a decorative top with a cardigan or wrap-over is a great combination.

Tights or leggings are essential when wearing a dress or skirt during the winter. Luckily both tights and leggings are available in many different styles and colors. Solid, opaque tights are numerous and affordable at most department stores and specialty tights with fun floral, geometrical or lace designs are easily found too.

Leggings come in all lengths and styles this season. Knee-length leggings go well with flats or heels while ankle-length leggings pair best with boots. Leggings with a strip of lace down the side are a nice variation to basic leggings.

Color correlation is vital when layering an outfit because if you’re wearing too many colors in addition to having many layers, you’re going to look like a walking circus. Neutral shades of black, brown and gray are great options for winter months because you will, more or less, blend in with the respective weather. The best thing about neutral colors is that you can get away with pairing them together in the same outfit without overwhelming your color scheme.

The key is to use the two-item rule: match two items of clothing or accessories to each other. For example, if you’re wearing black shoes, match your belt, purse or jacket to your shoes. The rest of your outfit can consist of any other neutral colors because your two items of matching colors will complete your look. The two-item rule can apply to other colors too: a red dress should be paired with two neutrals in shoe, purse, belt or jacket form. Accent the red dress with red jewelry, namely a necklace or earrings.

The best way to layer efficiently is to begin with thinner material and finish with a strong, durable shell. Multiple cardigans and wraps can be worn during the cold weather months, but make sure your less robust layers come before your thicker ones.

Warm winter jackets in pretty designs and colors are great alternatives to common ski jackets. They will provide shape and fun details that you can play up with other accessories. Use these simple rules to groom your winter wardrobe and stay warm in the cold temperatures.

How to get the shot when the snow is flying

t’s cold. It’s windy.Your hands are frozen.You’ve been snowshoeing for hours. Now the moment comes: the light on the Gore Range is perfect, with the snow reflecting the alpenglow that brushes the peaks.You pull out your camera. It’s going to be the perfect shot. But when you press the trigger, nothing happens. Your camera is frozen.

Winter photography is full of moments like this. While shooting in summer can be a joy, with warm weather and easy conditions, winter brings its own challenges. Cold temperatures can wreak havoc with electronics, and snow and condensation are also a risk. But that doesn’t mean you should leave your camera at home after the leaves fall from the trees. Colorado’s combination of white snow, jagged peaks and changeable weather can make for truly epic photographs. Here are some pointers to get the most out of your camera when things turn cold.

Serious? Get a real camera Today’s pocket-sized digital cameras are great, but if you’re really interested in getting great shots you need a better camera. In most cases that means a digital single lens reflex (SLR) Pro or Pro/ Consumer (prosumer) camera body that can accept different lenses, like Nikon’s D 90, Canon’s Digital Rebel XSi or the Pentax K-7.Your choice of camera body is less important than the quality of your lenses. Get the best you can afford. For those on a budget, companies like KEH (keh.com) and B & H Photo and Video (bhphotovideo.com) sell used gear. For those who want a pocket-sized option, the Cannon PowerShot G11 and the Nikon P7000 (available at Mike’s Camera, www. mikescamera.com) have full manual overrides of the automatic settings and are a good option for people who don’t want to lug a lot of weight, as they feature fixed rather than interchangeable lenses.

Basic point-and-shoots can achieve good results, but you’re relying on the automatic settings that drive these cameras.You can’t swap lenses, and they’re prone to failure in really cold weather.

Ultimately, you get what you pay for.

Get up early and stay out late This rule applies to all photographers, no matter the season. The best time to take pictures is when the light is the best, and that means sunrise and sunset. It’s very difficult to get stunning images

out of the pack when it’s snowed two feet and it’s sunny, don’t be afraid to take photos during storms. Colorado’s rapidly changing weather makes for unexpected moments of stunning beauty. If you only carry your camera when the sky is clear, you’ll miss out on some great shots.

Your camera is actually pretty tough

when the sun is directly overhead. Improve your chances by taking photos when the shadows are long and the light is soft. If you must shoot during the middle of the day, use your flash to lighten up faces and find interesting angles (see composition, below).

Take the time to set up shots This is a skill that improves with practice and will become second nature. Think about light, texture and angles. Putting a body in the middle of the frame is much less interesting than a close-up of a face. Divide up your field of view and juxtapose your subject with background textures. Experiment with silhouettes. Learn to use your flash to light part of your subject. Shoot from above. Lie on the ground and shoot up. Think about what’s in the background and position your subjects accordingly.

Figure out how the depth of field works on your lens to blur backgrounds while keeping your subject in focus. For landscapes, put a tree or a branch in the foreground to add depth. Experiment and have fun, and your photos will benefit.

Nail the action You’re unlikely — though it’s not impossible — to get great action shots with a point-and-shoot.

But if you’re serious about capturing winter sports action, you’ll have to buck up and get a real camera. Shoot at 1/500 of a second to freeze action like snowboard jumps and powder turns. Shoot at even faster rates of 1/2000 of a second to capture subjects like the racers at Beaver Creek’s Birds of Prey Downhill. Learn to increase your depth of focus by setting your lens at smaller apertures to ensure your subject is sharp.

Get wet, cold and snowy While it’s tempting to only take your camera

Your camera can get cold and wet and still function. Remember this and don’t leave it at home when the weather is nasty.

However, when you come into a warm ski lodge from the freezing outdoors, leave your camera in your pack. Taking it out immediately will allow condensation to form on the inside and outside of the camera, which you want to avoid.You’ll also want to keep your battery fully charged, and if it’s really cold, carry a spare next to your body to keep it warm. Cold saps battery power, although pro and “prosumer” SLR cameras are much less susceptible to the cold than cheap point-and-shoots.

Have a plan for your photos Regardless of what kind of software you use to process your photos, take the time to edit, process and organize your photos. And don’t forget to back up your digital images on a hard drive that’s separate from your laptop or home computer. Finally, delete your missed shots.

Only save your best images.

Experiment If you take away one piece of advice from reading this story, this is the most important: there are no rules as to what is right or wrong. Photography is an extension of your personal vision, of what you think is interesting, cool or important.

Experimentation is easy with digital cameras: you don’t have to pay for film or processing, and memory cards are cheap. Experiment and have fun.

When it comes to photography, every rule is made to be broken. Except, of course, this one.

hen you get tired of braving the snow, wind and ice outdoors, there’s plenty to do indoors to keep you entertained.

If you prefer your classics a bit more classic, then don’t miss Ballet Nouveau Colorado’s production of Nutcracker, which runs Dec. 10-19.

Classic doesn’t mean stuffy, however. After the show, kids are allowed on stage with the dancers to learn some of the steps from the performance. Who knows, you might have a tiny Baryshnikov on your hands.

CU Natural History Museum After six months of renovation, the University of Colorado Natural History Museum reopens on Nov. 13. For all you David Sedaris fans in the audience, don't miss the hilarious SantaLand Diaries, performed by the Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company (www.boulderensembletheatre.org). Based on Sedaris’ real-life experience working as an Elf in Macy’s SantaLand, The SantaLand Diaries played to packed houses last year and promises to be just as popular this year.

On Dec. 17, the Boulder Symphony (www. bouldersymphony.org) presents European Sojourn: Infusing Folk with Classical. The concert includes works by Mozart, Rimsky-Korsakov and others, as well as a holiday sing-along. Avoid the kooks by heading down to Monarch Ski Area where you can participate in an actual torchlight parade on the mountain while ringing in the New Year. The evening will feature fireworks, drink specials in Monarch’s quaint bar at the base of the mountain and the opportunity to be part of the show rather than a mere spectator. This year’s lineup includes Chad Peele, Canadian Barry Blanchard and Conrad Anker, who will also unveil his new fulllength film on the search for George Mallory’s remains on Mount Everest. The event also benefits the Ouray Ice Park and Ouray Volunteer Fire Department.

Powderhorn’s Telefest is a celebration of skiing’s first turn and all the history behind it. It’s a return to a simpler kind of skiing, and Powderhorn’s great snow and low-key vibe is just the place to experience it.

Artists sculpt from Tuesday, Jan. 25 at 11 a.m. until Saturday, Jan. 29 at 10 a.m. Judging is at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29, and the awards ceremony is at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 30. Sculptures will remain standing, weather permitting, until the night of Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011. The sandhills have been spending their “spring break” outside the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge for thousands of years. They stop in Colorado to load up on fuel prior to heading to more northern climes for the summer. 20,000 or so greater sandhill cranes are joined by lesser sandhills, wintering bald eagles and other raptors that highlight the wildlife viewing. The festival hosts wildlife experts, local naturalists and biologists who present educational workshops.

There are special tours featuring raptor identification, sunset trips to view cranes, and visits to closed areas of the refuge for Crane Fest participants.

“That’s a big part of the whole experience, just letting the music play and not trying to be too wordy,” Bevry says.

“It kind of is the classic Warren Miller film, skiers and riders traversing the globe in search of other and new destinations, unique descents,” says Emily McCormack, press representative for the film in Colorado. “Warren Miller was a pioneer in the action sports cinematography area. His films kind of quintessentially include beautiful scenery, breathtaking backdrops and humor.”

Going to see a Warren Miller film is more than just a night at the movies.

“It’s insanity,” McCormack says. “It has this cult following, so people dress up in random ’80s ski gear, ’70s ski gear. It’s very interactive.

People don’t just sit there and watch the movie.”

The film screens at the Boulder Theater Nov. 9-14.

Boulder International Film Festival Last year, they got Alec Baldwin of 30 Rock to come to Boulder. This year, who knows?

The Boulder International Film Festival has been breaking attendance records and drawing celebrity attendants and big-name producers (anyone heard of The Lion King? Yeah, that producer) in the seven short years it’s been running.

From Feb. 17–20, the BIFF will screen 50

to 60 films. More than 16,400 people attended the festival in 2010, up from the 5,000 the festival began with in 2005.

“Our goal is to bring independent films to Boulder that you’re not going to see at the cineplex,” says Kathy Beeck, the festival’s director.

While they have seen riffs develop within the festival — a series of films on music or politics — they don’t designate themes.

“Our theme is great story-telling every year,” Beeck says.

The 2011 festival will be punctuated by more parties, a chance to network with filmmakers and discuss the films, and more workshops and panels. It will also continue an event launched in 2010, the Digital Media Symposium, or DiMe. Last year’s DiMe featured a panel of digital media specialists who do graphic designing, editing, filmmaking and videography.

“We bring them together to discover commonalities, to discover what the potential is to work together,” Beeck says.

The festival also coordinates a “Call 2 Action” that pairs eight to 10 of the films with a method for people to translate the film’s message into action.

“We don’t just want to show the film and say, OK, thanks for coming, and everybody walks out upset, but what can we do? How can we mobilize that passion into action?” Beeck says.

Last year, Dive, a documentary about food waste, was matched with information on Community Food Share, and Down for Life, a documentary about a gang leader, was presented with the Gang Response and Intervention Program.

Festival staffers are in the midst of selecting films and inviting films scouted at other festivals around the country. The schedule will not be finalized until January, but they do know that Don Hahn, producer for Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King, will return this year with another documentary he’s directed. This year’s submission is called Hand Held, and tells the story of a photojournalist who goes to Romania to work with AIDS orphans there.

“While telling a very personal story about a photojournalist and his incredible 20-year journey, Hand Held also speaks to the fundamental ethics of social responsibility and giving back for the greater good,” Hahn said in a written statement. “Mike Carroll is not Romanian, nor did he have any ties there. He was doing this purely from the heart. I was amazed and moved by his ability to mobilize hundreds of people to bring aid, education and comfort to thousands of kids, in a country half a world away and despite insurmountable odds. His was a story worth telling.”

Beeck says both Hahn and Carroll will be in Boulder for the festival.

Other options Matchstick Productions — The tour is over, but if you’re really devoted, you can always get the DVD. It’s more, well … let’s just say the filmmaker described a camera as “really sick” in one of the “making of” shorts online, and then one of the athletes described a ski lodge as “really sick.” That’s two “really sicks” in two and a half minutes.

Backcountry Film Festival — Warren Miller-esque in style, but without the aerial cameras. A nitty-gritty look at backcountry skiing. 2010-11 tour dates have not yet been announced.

Denver International Film Festival — If you’re already eager for independent films, it’s worth the drive to the big city to check out this 10-day festival in November. This year’s lineup includes a film directed by University of Colorado graduate Derek Cianfrance.
