Xcel comes knocking You’ve probably seen one of us walking around your neighborhood.

We’ve been knocking on doors, handing out literature, and maybe we’ve even talked to you. We are paid canvassers, henchmen, nothing more than political mercenaries. We care little about your utility bill or what happens in your community. All that we care about is that you vote “NO” on Boulder Ballot Measures 2B and 2C. We may look like concerned community volunteers, but we aren’t who you think we are. Some of us don’t even live in Boulder. Many of those who do just moved here, and all of us are being compensated, rather handsomely, for our efforts. Our responsibilities include knocking on about 100 doors a night and keeping detailed records about your responses to our questions. We are required to repeat the same script over and over again. We tell people we are “educating” them about the “risks” of 2B and 2C. But after a time, I began to wonder, aren’t my colleagues and I really just indoctrinating people with an expensive misinformation campaign?

We were told it was “concerned Boulder citizens,” but it became quite obvious rather quickly it’s just Xcel Energy and a handful of other interests with big money. The company is on track to spend millions to stop Boulder from voting to explore municipaliza-

tion, and a couple of those dollars came back to me.

Of course, they don’t make the paper trail very easy to track, but it’s not hard to figure out. As far as I can tell, here’s the scheme: I worked for a door-to-door canvassing firm, Rocky Mountain Voter Outreach, which was

In assessing the spreading public protest against the rampaging greed of today’s financial elite, John Paulson turns out to be as confused as a goat on Astroturf. Oh, he gets it that the people’s anger is directed at hedge-fund profiteers like him, but he claims they are simply confused on the virtue of accumulated wealth. While he raked in nearly $5 billion in personal pay last year (the largest single haul in Wall Street history), gaining his bonanza from rigged Wall Street casino games — he asserts that the amassing of wealth itself serves the public good.

When it comes down to it, all that Paulson clique really wants is a little love, a small show of gratitude for all that the richest 1 percent is doing for us 99 percent of Americans by making themselves ever-richer. In a plaintive press release, he recently wrote that, “Instead of vilifying our most successful businesses, we should be supporting them and encouraging them.”

Isn’t it sad to hear John cry? But, then, he does have $15 billion in net worth to dry those tears.

Why a Boulder scientist in renewable energy research is voting NO on Issues 2B and 2C Steve Haymes is a Boulder resident and a scientist in renewable energy research focusing on wind resource assessment, and has 17 years of experience working on both domestic and international renewable energy projects.

Dear Boulder Voter, As a seventeen-plus year scientist in renewable energy research, and 35-plus year resident of Boulder, I am voting NO on ballot items 2B and 2C because in my many years of renewable energy research, I have seen that “doing it wrong” does not advance the change to renewables.

Instead, it does the exact opposite, which makes promoting clean energy even more difficult. And 2B and 2C amount to “doing it wrong.”

Last summer, at the request of two City Council members, I reviewed over 400 pages of reports prepared by consultants that City staff hired to assess municipalization. I uncovered several errors: ■ First, one consultant proposed building a geothermal power plant in Eldorado Springs, but failed to realize that these are artesian springs that produce drinking water, and not hot springs that produce geothermal heat.

■ Another consultant evaluated the electrical transmission within Boulder, but failed to address the regional electrical transmission outside the City, which would be required to carry energy to Boulder from utility-scale wind farms on the eastern plains.

■ Using scientific material that I personally produced, another City consultant proposed a utility-scale wind farm west of the Eldora Ski Area extending into both the Indian Peaks and James Peak Wilderness Areas, but failed to realize that federal regulations would prohibit this.

As a scientist, many of these errors were outrageous. However, an unknowledgeable City Staff bought them.

At one City Council meeting that I attended, City Staff admitted that they had underestimated by 60% the annual legal costs to acquire Xcel’s infrastructure (power lines, substations, etc.), resulting in legal costs of about $1.6 million per year. In a legal battle in Colorado State Court that will last 5 to 7 years, this would add up to over $10 million in legal fees without spending a penny on additional renewables for Boulder.

At another Council meeting, Staff admitted that they had not looked at any worst-case scenarios on the cost of acquiring Xcel’s infrastructure, including the “stranded costs” that Boulder would have to pay Xcel for their existing investments in infrastructure. This expense will be determined by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and could easily cost $300 million – again, without spending a penny on additional renewables for Boulder.

As a citizen, I found these omissions (and then, confessions) by an unprepared City staff to be simply outrageous.

To put in perspective the potential cost of Boulder’s municipalization and acquisition of Xcel’s infrastructure relative to the entire national U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) renewable energy research budget: the U.S. House of Representative’s FY2012 budget calls for about a $900 million cut to the U.S. DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy budget. This is about 30% of the entire national DOE renewable energy research budget. Given the City of Boulder’s estimated costs, including stranded costs, I estimate that the City of Boulder will be paying at least $600-700 million to acquire Xcel’s infrastructure – once again, with no more renewables. So the City of Boulder, with a population of about 100,000, will spend about 20% of the entire national Department of Energy renewable energy research budget just to buy Xcel’s lines, poles, switches and transformers.

In my many years of renewable energy research, I have known my share of stories where “doing it wrong” did more to damage renewables in the United States than to promote them. Two cases come to mind – one in the Midwest and one in the Northeast, both university towns with many smart and educated people who knew little about renewables and the energy industry in general, but lots of “experts” who thought that they did. In one case, a poorly-sited wind farm produced too-little power. In the other case, the City got a very beautiful modern statue – a utility-sized wind turbine that seldom turned.

One of Boulder’s so-called experts behind municipalization has proposed building a utility-scale rechargeable battery complex for Boulder.

Efforts to do this elsewhere in the U.S. have been of limited success, and instead have resulted in huge concentrations of highly toxic battery chemicals in elaborate cooling and containment systems which, if they failed, would create an environmental nightmare.

So, for all these reasons, I am voting NO on ballot items 2B and 2C, as are several of my professional colleagues, some of whom have been in renewable energy research for over 30 years. “Doing it wrong” will only take us backwards in our quest for clean energy advancement.

Boulder and talking to hundreds of residents, I’m not so sure. I’ve heard a lot of great arguments about why exploring municipalization could be good for Boulder and why the scary points Xcel wants us to make aren’t completely credible.

I know I’m not alone. Some of my friends on the canvassing crew even expressed concerns to me about what they were doing, but ultimately decided to stay on “for the money.” Some even quit after a few days because they felt they were being asked to spread lies to help Xcel to continue making profits off of Boulder.

Honestly though, it doesn’t matter much to me — seeing as I live in Denver.

Problems with Prop 103 While I signed the petition to get Proposition 103 on the ballot, I will not vote for it. Here are the problems I see: Has the proposition been written in such ironclad terms that 1) not one penny will ever be allocated to a religious school or charter school? That 2) no tax money collected under Prop. 103 will ever be redirected to other unrelated purposes? Politicians often attempt to finesse regressive taxes to areas far removed from their original intent. 3) Why did Rollie Heath and his neoliberal pals and palettes formulate a regressive tax policy for Proposition 103? Why didn’t they propose a progressive tax based on personal and corporate pre-tax assets and income? 4) Will corporate wealth be taxed under Prop. 103? If not, why not? And then there is the matter of the five-year duration to the tax. Why not just a one-year or two-year maximum duration as a stopgap measure? I would vote for that option.

Politicians have a tendency to institutionalize long-term regressive taxes in order to avoid dealing with existing massive tax inequities such as currently exist in America. The entire question of taxation has to be dealt with on inclu6 October 27, 2011

sive federal, regional, state and local levels. The impetus behind Proposition 103 is laudable — I have no problem with its intent. But as I interpret it in its current form, it only begs the question for a finite time period. It doesn’t solve the long-term problem. Vote Proposition 103 down, and then inundate the state Capitol with protesters until a solvent, long-term, viable and rational funding policy for Colorado’s K-12 and higher education is adopted.

There is plenty of money floating around this benighted nation to solve this specific problem. Redirecting the $1.1 trillion annual American compelled “donation” to the military/industrial/anti-terrorist/intelligence complex to useful civilian purposes would go a long way to stabilize our internal economic needs, not to mention a more just, more civilized way for Americans to live their lives.

Fetal faith I was noticing the display at the Sacred Heart of Mary church on South Boulder Road, where it seems they’ve taken it upon themselves to plant more than 3,000 small white crosses on their front lawn along with a group of signs that read in succession, “Over ... 3,000 abortions ... in the U.S. per day.” With the debate over “Pro-Life” and “ProChoice,” I have to ask: 1) If a fetus has no brain function in the womb, what gives the Catholic Church the right to designate the religion of an unborn “Jane Doe” by marking its grave with the symbol of Jesus Christ? And 2) If a fetus has no brain function to choose a religion, perhaps the Catholic Church should put a more neutral grave marker to represent the unborn.

I recently came across a similar display in Littleton on W. Bowles Avenue at The Light of the World Church, where they’ve posted the exact same signs along the side of the road, but instead of using 3,000 crosses, they

he trouble with finding new sources of renewable energy is that the people who currently profit off our energy use want to continue profiting forever and ever. Our need as a human family to find new ways of staying warm, cooking our meals and making things go vroom is immaterial to people who will cease to be rich the moment we stop buying fossil fuels.

Imagine a nation where places once known as “gas stations” stay in business only by selling junk food and coffee and offering access to restrooms. Imagine a country where power is supplied through a hodgepodge of wind, solar, biomass, and tidal sources, with each family, neighborhood and town supplying their own. Imagine having no gasoline costs, no electricity bill, no heating bill.

For someone concerned about pollution and global climate change, it sounds like the endgame they’re working toward. For the people in these industries, it just sounds like the end.

I’m not asking you to feel sorry for them — I certainly don’t. I bring it up because it explains why companies like Xcel try so damned hard to keep us dependent upon them.

Their vision of the future, shared by the petroleum industry and the coal

industry, is one in which they have a product to sell us — energy — and we continue to buy.

There are other visions out there.

Some members of Boulder Smart Energy Coalition, in cahoots with Xcel, reportedly want to profit off the creation of solar gardens.

At this point in human history, we have a chance to rethink how we use energy and how we extract it. It was a conscious corporate effort that created our gasoline-dependent culture, with industry pushing government to scuttle vast plans for public transportation in favor of cars. But with peak oil likely upon us, if not already behind us, we must start making new plans to feed our need for energy. This gives us an opportunity to create our future as consciously as industry created our past.

Industry has been contemplating this problem for quite some time. Many years ago, I went on a behind-thescenes tour of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden.

What I expected was an establishment dedicated to pure research on renewable energy. What I found was an institution that was deeply involved in public-private partnerships where tax dollars were see ENERGY Page 8

being used to help create renewable energy technology that private industry would perhaps one day sell back to the same taxpayers who helped pay for its development. Well, that’s fine, I suppose, though I’ve always thought a taxpayer investment ought to come with a hefty taxpayer discount on the other end. But what the visit to NREL really showed me was how desperate industry is to retain control over our access to and supply of energy.

Think of it this way: You’re a crack addict, and fossil fuels are the best rock around. The extraction, refinement and

distribution industries associated with fossil-fuel-based energy are your dealer.

The last thing in the world they want is for you to kick the habit.

But kick the habit we must. We will eventually run out of oil deposits and mountains to tear down for coal. The energy industry knows this. But it wants to control that transition so it still has a product that we must buy.

What would Boulder look like if voters opt to municipalize energy and worked to take the entire town off the grid by putting solar panels on every home and building that could benefit from them, by erecting solar parks across the city, by taking advantage of wind energy where possible and using waste from our public lands for biomass energy?

If we pass measures 2B and 2C, we might get an answer to my question. At the very least, we’ll be in a position to explore our options as a city — and to shape our own future.

If we don’t pass 2B and 2C, we’ll continue to buy whatever Xcel sells us.

Vote YES on 2B and 2C. And when you consider Xcel’s actions during this election, vote YES on 2H, too.

On one hand you have these obnoxious neon flags that flicker in the wind demanding attention, and on the other, tiny white crosses to get the point across that abortion is not only considered wrong by the Catholic Church, but is also a chance to add in a classic “Catholic guilt.”

I think the message Sacred Heart of Mary should spell out isn’t so much “over 3,000 abortions performed in the U.S.,” but should say what they’re really trying to say, as only Catholics can: “If you get an abortion, God will be very mad at you, and when you die, you will go to hell.”

briefs CRC celebrates 35 years The Center for ReSource Conservation (CRC) will be celebrating its 35th anniversary as an environmental nonprofit at its ReWards dinner on Saturday, Nov. 5, at the St. Julien Hotel in Boulder.

CRC’s annual fundraiser, the ReWards Dinner, recognizes individuals and groups who are providing exceptional leadership in conserving natural resources in their communities.

“CRC has been helping people learn how to conserve resources for 35 years, which is really something to celebrate,” says Keith Frausto, CRC executive director. “We’ll be honoring environmental leaders who are playing a major role in improving the quality of life of Boulder and the Front Range.”

Circles Campaign training set As part of its continued effort to help move individuals and families out of poverty and into a life of sustained self-sufficiency, Boulder County is recruiting volunteers to participate in the Circles Campaign.

The Circles Campaign provides a stable structure for people who are working their way out of poverty to receive guidance and support from mentors — called “allies” — to help them develop skills and access resources needed to work on their long-range plans to move toward economic stability.

Another use for pumpkins The Boot Camp staff at Fitness For Living are gearing up for their third annual Halloween Fitness Food Drive for the Emergency Family Assistance Association (EFAA).

A twist to the event is that the entire workout uses a pumpkin in its exercises. The Food Drive Fitness event will take place at Scott Carpenter Park in Boulder on Saturday, Oct. 29, from 8:45 to 10 a.m.

“A pumpkin is a perfect substitute for a weighted medicine ball,” Camp Trainer Terri Garden says. “No one will be throwing out their pumpkin this year after they experience the pumpkin overhead lift, pumpkin chest press, pumpkin crunch twist and the pumpkin relay race.”

Participants are encouraged to wear a costume, and prizes will be awarded for best costume and spirit.

Women are encouraged to bring a five- to 10-pound pumpkin and men an eight- to 14-pound pumpkin.

Big changes for U.S. 36 coming down the pike

n weekdays, U.S. 36 feels more like a parking lot than a freeway, with traffic often coming to a standstill.

But recently, major strides have been taken to improve the commuting conditions, following a vision that local mayors have had for a long time.

More than 10 years ago, Will Toor, Boulder’s mayor at the time, was one of the founding members of the U.S. 36 Mayors and Commissioners Coalition (MCC), a group of mayors from surrounding cities that met once a month to discuss how improvements could be made to the freeway. Now some of the ideas they came up with are becoming a reality.

On Sept. 1, the project landed a $54 million Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act loan from the High Performance Transportation Enterprise, a government-owned business within the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), to begin the U.S. 36 Managed Lanes/Bus Rapid Transit Project, which will cost more than $300 million.

John Schwab, the CDOT project director, says the U.S. 36 project will be constructed in two phases. The first phase will take place from Federal Boulevard to Interlocken Boulevard, and the second phase, which is not currently funded, will occur from Interlocken to Table Mesa Drive. The project will include added HOV lanes for buses and carpoolers, a tollway for single-occupancy riders, queue jumps for buses, sound walls, improved ramps and a bike lane that will run the length of the project.

“It’s going to be a total reconstruction,” says Schwab. “It’s gone fairly smooth at this point, and it is based on the mutual partnerships along the corridor.”

Another improvement to U.S. 36 will be the addition of light rail and commuter rail service that will run from Table Mesa to Denver’s Union Station.

The addition of the rail lines from Boulder to Denver will be funded by the Regional Transportation District (RTD) FasTracks Program. However, more funding is needed to build the lines, says Pauletta Tonilas, FasTracks public information manager at RTD. “CDOT, RTD and the coalition Boulder Weekly

have all been collaborating for some time, brainstorming new ways to find funding,” says Tonilas. “That helps keep the project moving forward.”

Liz Viscardi, FasTracks public information liaison, explains that once the U.S. 36 Managed Lanes/Bus Rapid Transit Project is completed, the project will improve the commute to or from Boulder for every bus rider by 17 to 24 minutes.

For drivers, there will be incentive to carpool, as they will be able to drive in the HOV lanes, and for single-occupancy riders, there also will be the option of paying a toll for a faster commute, she says. (The bonds issued for the CDOT loan will be repaid with toll revenues.)

Boulder Mayor Susan Osborne says that even though the second phase of the project hasn’t been funded yet, she is confident that it will be completed.

“As each increment gets built, there will be a benefit to Boulder citizens, and particularly to Boulder commuters,” she says. “There is a positive spirit about getting this project done. I think RTD, CDOT and all the communities want the project done as soon as possible.”

CDOT is expected to choose a contractor for the job in February, and construction is set to begin in the spring or early summer. The managed lanes of the first phase are expected to be completed

by July 1, 2015.

Toor says the package of improvements planned for the highway has been pared down significantly in recent years.

About eight years ago, he explains, the project involved the construction of an additional lane in each direction and a $2 billion price tag, in part because of pressure from then-Gov. Bill Owens to widen highways.

“It was unfundable,” Toor says of the previous plan, adding that the new approach of combining transit with HOV and bike lanes is smarter, not to mention much less expensive. And, he says, a variety of funding sources have been leveraged to make it happen.

“It’s great to see things moving forward,” Toor says. “When I first started working on this, my son was in preschool, and now he’s getting close to starting high school. I’m really happy to see it coming to fruition.”

Controversial oil/ gas drilling digs in around Boulder County

B

oulder County’s northeast shoulder is about to get fracked.

Again.

Hydraulic fracturing, also called “fracking,” has become nationally known due to environmental concerns about the chemicals that mining companies use when shooting their high-powered liquids deep into the earth to extract oil and gas. The practice has attracted scrutiny because of the possible effects those chemicals can have on groundwater.

But despite some local residents’ environmental concerns, companies that have mineral rights — and leases to drill for those minerals — seem to have carte blanche to extract the oil and gas beneath the surface, even when it lies under sensitive natural areas like Union Reservoir in Longmont.

Two companies — Cougar Land Services and the TOP Operating Company — are in talks with Longmont officials about how to exploit what is known as the Wattenberg oil field. That field stretches northeast from Boulder County, is about 35 miles wide, and is bordered on the south by the Denver metro area and on the north by Highway 14.

Oil and gas companies already have mineral rights and leases all over Weld County, and that area has become a hotbed of mining activity, as drilling equipment has become almost as common in housing developments as swing sets. **** Fracking is even being done on Boulder County open space land, although it is not growing at the same clip as it is in Weld County. The majority of Boulder County open space had existing leases at the time the properties were purchased, and by law, the county has to allow the leaseholders to drill, according to Matt Adeletti, senior paralegal specialist for the county’s parks and open space department.

“Even if the county, or anybody, owns the surface of the land and the minerals, if you have an oil and gas lease, the oil and gas lease trumps the ownership of the surface owner and the mineral owner,” Adeletti says.

There are drilling operations next to Coal Ridge Middle School, Centennial Elementary, Legacy Elementary School and the Imagine Charter School, all documented prominently at WTFrack. org.

“There’s another one in the back of our subdivision, next to the dog park and the kids’ park,” Kearney says. **** Kaye Fissinger is chair of Longmont’s Board of Environmental Affairs (BEA). She agrees to talk on the record only after making clear that she is speaking as a local environmental activist, not in her capacity as chair of the board.

Fissinger’s board heard a presentation about the proposal to drill on Longmont open space on Oct. 19. She complains that the group was not included early enough in the process.

“This has been in the works since June, and we’re just getting a heads-up now,” Fissinger says. “I’m concerned about this two- to three-month timeframe. It looks to me like it’s being railroaded through the process and it’s all window dressing.”

There isn’t much that the city can do to stop TOP Operating, the Lakewood company that holds leases to access its wells around and beneath Union Reservoir, she explains.

“We can’t stop them from drilling.

All we can do is mitigate the potential disasters that could occur,” Fissinger says.

A map of the area shows that TOP owns a symmetrical grid of more than 40 well sites under Union Reservoir.

They can access those wells without setting up facilities in the middle of the water by erecting drilling platforms along the shore of the lake, boring down, then drilling at various angles under the reservoir to tap into the oil and gas.

In a request that is separate from TOP’s negotiations with the city, Cougar Land Services is asking the city to allow seismic surveys on behalf of the Anadarko Petroleum Company, and would pay the city $7.50 per acre for the Boulder Weekly

right to survey. The two surveys would generate $13,722 for Longmont’s coffers.

Fissinger is opposed to granting the requests.

“Why would we want to allow seismic surveying, which would facilitate even more drilling over the next 10 to 15 years?” she asks.

At the very least, she says, the city should insist on “green completion” — when oil and gas companies are required to restore land to the exact state in which they found it, once drilling operations are complete. Fissinger says the city should also ensure that the companies put a tracer in their fracking fluid that can be detected in future groundwater tests, so that the corporations can’t deny responsibility if water is contaminated by the fluid. She also wants to know where the companies are going to get the millions of gallons of water required for fracking, and where the chemical-infused wastewater will be disposed of once it comes back up.

Officials from Cougar, TOP and Anadarko did not return calls by press time. **** Dale Rademacher, director of public works and natural resources for the city of Longmont, says the seismic survey request and TOP’s drilling plans are making the rounds to the city’s advisory boards, including Fissinger’s BEA, the Water Board and the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. He says the seismic survey request will go to City Council before the end of the calendar year, while the TOP negotiations lie in the hands of the Planning and Zoning Commission, which will likely decide in December whether to issue the conditional use permit required for TOP’s drilling.

He expects the various advisory groups to raise questions about the impacts associated with the drilling, because fracking is a hot topic right now.

“Their advice to the council, I’m anticipating, is going to typically be, make sure we protect the environment, make sure we do this in a very responsible way,” Rademacher says. “I doubt anybody’s planning to drill in the middle of Union Reservoir.”

But when it comes to TOP’s rights, he adds, the best the city can hope for is to consolidate the drilling sites to a limited number of locations.

“Right now, the lease-holder, say it’s TOP, they have the right to drill,” Rademacher says. “What we are simply trying to do is come up with a consolidated drill site. We are not trying to dictate the method under which they drill. It’s outside of our purview.”

He says hydraulic fracturing is regulated at the state level, by the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission Boulder Weekly

(COGCC), not at the municipal level.

“It’s my understanding that virtually all of the wells in the Wattenberg field require hydraulic fracturing to access the oil and gas, but we don’t regulate that,” Rademacher says.

And he says fracking is not necessarily a new thing on city-owned lands, citing existing drilling operations on the Sandstone, Bogott, Hartman and French open space properties.

Rademacher himself lives on a family farm in Weld County, where fracking has been used since the 1970s, and he agrees that companies should be transparent about the chemicals they use.

(This week, the COGCC scheduled a public hearing on Dec. 5 to discuss whether fracking chemicals should be publicly disclosed.)

But Rademacher says he’s seen no problems associated with fracking.

“These are not shallow wells that are anywhere near a water supply,” he says. **** But Phil Doe, environmental issues director for Be The Change USA, challenges the oil and gas industry’s claim that fracking does not contaminate groundwater. He acknowledges that the drilling depth is usually at around 7,000 feet, way below any water table, but he points out that half of the chemicalinfused water that is shot down the well comes back up, and must be disposed of properly.

“Despite what the industry says, it isn’t as rosy as they would have you believe,” Doe says. “There’s a lot of evidence that fracking can have a negative effect on the water supply.”

And it’s not just the chemicals, he says. It’s the sheer amount of water needed per frack — as much as 30 acrefeet, or about 9.8 million gallons.

“That’s enough for the annual water needs of 300 people,” Doe says, adding that water is already scarce in Colorado.

“That’s not where I think our water should go. It’s insanity. We take our most valuable resource and destroy it for a less valuable resource.”

His wants to enact moratoriums on fracking, as has been done in other states, until all of the questions about the practice are answered.

“We ought to be a little more circumspect,” Doe says. “Can we really trust the oil companies? Is their track record really so superlative?

“This thing is just fraught with tons of unknowns,” he adds. “I think we need to hold our elected representatives accountable here. … The water in this state belongs to the people. There should be a wide-ranging discussion about what’s good for the people, not what’s good for the oil and gas industry.”

“It’s centered around the next 10 years of life on this planet,” he says, “and what we need to do to establish a more sustainable reality for the next generation, for the generations to come.”

The Build 2020 Manifesto, as he released it in March of this year, is a 75-minute oratory project mixed with hip-hop music. At Bioneers, he says, he plans to present a version that involves the audience, both during the presentation and in terms of what they take home.

“I feel like I provide a lot of context and a lot of information, but I try to leave things open so everybody takes away from these presentations what they need to personally,” Molina says. “My goal is not to indoctrinate people with any sort of message, or to steer people in any sort of direction. It’s more to wake people up to what they need to do in their communities.”

Bioneers originated 21 years ago as a national conference, before spreading to local events 10 years ago. This Bioneers is Boulder’s ninth. Going local has meant giving Bioneers presenters a chance to key into the issues facing local communities, and get engaged with small-scale, local solutions, according to Martin.

“I think what Bioneers does is, because it sets a vision and solutions out there, it changes people’s perspectives,” Martin says. “It gives them new ideas it invigorates and inspires people and kind of keeps them going.”

Brock, who has appeared on previous panels at Bioneers, will be giving a talk on looking to ecosystems for lessons in how we grow our communities, like applying the principles of transplanting a plant to a person moving into a new community.

“I think so many people at this point are aware of the problems that we’re facing in all different areas of our society,” he says. “But Bioneers — and my presentation — is really about saying, now that we’ve identified those problems, where can we look for solutions, what’s already happening on the ground, and how can we replicate those best practices?”

One of the presentations will come from Adrian H. Molina, also known as Molina Speaks, a participant in the Flobots.org artist/activist group, who will be presenting from his Build 2020 Manifesto.

“The government, corporations, think tanks, international banking organizations — the major power brokers of the world — they have agendas and plans for the year 2020, for 2030, for 2045. They have plans that are socially engineering the future, not necessarily in a conspiratorial way, but there are plenty of plans for the way they want the world to look in the future,” Molina says. “I think it’s critical that as everyday people, we set our own agendas for what we want for the future.”

Bioneers sets out to curb the panic with a solutions-based approach to some of the issues facing the planet.

“Every workshop is geared toward a tool or a some sort of a solution,” says Marianne Martin, associate director of the Environmental Center at the University of Colorado, which coordinates the event. Bioneers will include more than 30 presentations and workshops from local presenters covering economics, business, localization and food issues as well as sustainable building.

“It has such a variety of offerings that there’s kind of something for everyone, depending on what they want to focus on,” Martin says. There’s a mix in the pace of the presentations, and some include activities like touring Cure Organic Farm to see their off-the-grid greenhouse.

“One of the things that I love about Bioneers is that one, it’s comprehensive, it’s holistic, it looks at our ecological predicament and social justice,” says Adam Brock, director of operations at the GrowHaus, a nonprofit food justice center and indoor farm in Denver. “I also appreciate that it’s participatory group conversations and interactive workshops, so you really get to be face to face with some of these changemakers and are inspired to become a

ombies are on the rise. And I’m not just saying that for the pun.

AMC’s drama The Walking Dead is breaking records in its second season. Zombie video games sell like hotcakes. The novel World War Z will soon star Brad Pitt in theaters. And dozens of books cover zombies from every angle — fiction, faux non-fiction, survival, history, cultural relevance. Zombies are alive and unwell.

But why? What’s the meaning behind the phenomenon? Why do people like zombies so much?

Good debaters will tell you: Black-and-white, yesor-no questions are misleading and often just plain wrong. But in the zombie world, a lot

rides on one simple choice: Slow or fast?

“I prefer slow, but I’m clearly in the minority,” says Max Brooks, author of World War Z and The Zombie Survival Guide. “I get why fast zombies are in. You gotta keep people interested.”

Brooks might feel he’s in the minority, but zombie experts of all kinds agree with him: slow rules. Fans of the undead cite George Romero’s trademark lumbering, shuffling corpses in 1968’s Night of the Living Dead as the model zombie.

Andrea Wood, an assistant professor of media studies at Minnesota’s Winona State, says the Romero tradition is too powerful to ignore.

“I prefer slow-moving zombies. I fall in the camp of Romero purist fans,” she says. “I think there’s something more thrilling about the slow, steady onslaught of the zombie horde.”

Zombie survivalist Matt Mogk, who authored Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Zombies and founded the Zombie Research Society, says fast “zombies” like in 28 Days Later aren’t zombies since they don’t die and come back to life. They’re just infected with a virus.

“I think as a traditionalist, as a lover of Romero, I would lean towards the slow zombies because it’s more traditional,” Mogk says.

Tradition means quite a bit in debates about zombies, even though the creatures aren’t saddled with centuries of legend and myth like werewolves and vampires are. This community’s Bram Stoker is filmmaker George Romero, and with good reason: Night of the Living Dead radically altered the zombie narrative.

Previously a Haitian myth about people enslaved by spells, Romero’s zombies are a totally different breed. In his film — in which they’re only called “ghouls”; “zombie” was applied later — nuclear radiation from a fallen satellite causes the recently dead to rise, shuffle around, see ZOMBIES Page 20

attack the living, and eat their flesh.

And they do, which was pretty shocking in 1968. In a review for the Chicago Sun-Times, master critic Roger Ebert relates how horrified and stunned the audience was at the film: “The movie had stopped being delightfully scary about halfway through and had become unexpectedly terrifying.” Since then, hundreds of zombie films have probably dampened the impact a little bit, but the movie’s still used as a standard to judge all others.

Part of its staying power is that Night of the Living Dead isn’t just a scary movie. Romero uses zombies, experts say, to talk about us.

“I loved his stories because they’re so packed with social commentary,” Brooks says. “He uses them to create ways of looking at society. Zombie stories are a safe way of exploring the apocalypse without it being too real.”

Kyle Bishop, an assistant professor of English at Southern Utah University, says that’s a role horror movies often play. “Like all good horror, it’s feeding our anxieties: the fear of getting infected, the fear of disease.”

“I would say across the board, almost every zombie narrative is a barometer for what we’re worried about right now,” he says. “Let’s look at our horror to see what we’re afraid of.”

In 1968, we were afraid of radiation and space exploration changing us.

These days, zombie films reflect our fears about infection, terrorism and a lot more, Wood says.

“Backstories speak to the cultural anxieties of the moment when the films were made,” she says. “Night of the Living Dead spoke to Cold War fears in American consciousness. More recently we have narratives about infection.”

Mogk agrees: Zombies are a way to channel big issues in the real world and deal with them.

“I think zombies are popular because it’s a fun way to deal with the concerns we face every day,” he says. “Even economic disaster, zombies are perfect for that. More so than any other monster.”

One of the key ways zombie films comment on society is the creation story — how zombies are made. That’s one of the strengths of such a young monster, Wood says.

“The origin narrative is flexible because the zombie is not as entrenched a being within the literary Western European culture as vampires or werewolves,” she says. “Creators can take liberties with where zombies come from.”

For some, though, there’s value to leaving some questions unanswered.

“I think it’s scarier if you don’t know where they came from or how you get

it,” Bishop says, pointing to The Walking Dead as an example. “I really like it when it’s unexplained.”

But there are other things that Bishop would really like to know. Like — as with Denver’s recent zombie crawl and the thousands who will dress as zombies this Halloween — why do people pretend to be zombies?

“I can understand why people would dress up as vampires,” he says. “They want to emulate the sexiness and the power. But I’m not sure why people dress up as zombies. Is it because we don’t want to think?”

Experts on the topic seem pretty bewildered. What’s the attraction to pretending to be a zombie?

“You got me,” Brooks says. “They scare the crap out of me. At a zombie crawl, they’re all having fun, and it’s like, ‘Wow, they just crawled out of my nightmares.’”

Wood says zombie walks started to critique consumerism and capitalism — invoking a common image of consumers as zombies — but now the attraction’s probably to be someone else for a while.

“There might be something kind of liberating in the idea of playing the undead,” she says, “imagining you don’t have to care about things like debt and anxieties anymore.”

To Mogk, the appeal to being a zombie is a basic one among humans: to be accepted.

“Zombies are the only club that will take all comers,” he says. “You’ll see some family with their kids all dressed as zombies. Then you’ll see a scrubby punk rock dude who they wouldn’t want to walk down the street next to.

Nobody’s an outsider.”

It’s a nice thought for zombie crawls and Halloween parties. It’s probably not enough to make a survivor lower the shotgun in a film anytime soon. But that’s one of Brooks’ fears: He envisions zombies gradually becoming less threatening, scary and authentic with time, a term he calls “getting boybanded.”

“Eventually rock and roll morphs from Sid Vicious to the Jonas Brothers,” he says. “Same thing with vampires, we went from Dracula to Twilight to make it peachy and G-rated. I guarantee you somewhere someone is working on a way to take the fear out of zombies and market them to children.”

But it hasn’t happened yet. So grab your fake blood and white makeup and practice your shuffle and moan. Just please, don’t say, “BRAAAIIINS.” Zombies don’t have such high standards.

ZOMBIESINBOULDER

Devotchka Oct. 29, Boulder Theater, doors at 8 p.m. $42 The gypsy-punk-folk-orchestral group returns to Boulder for its annual Halloween show Oct. 29 at the Boulder Theater. This year’s theme, made public beforehand for the first time, is zombies vs. vampires.

“I think people will get pretty excited about those two themes,” says Boulder Theater talent buyer Kirk Peterson. “The band’s music is very cinematic and goes really well with it.

“Some of the themes they’ve done in the past, they just totally go for it on the costumes,” he says. “They did a Japanese kabuki theme and got the costumes from Japan. They did a matador theme and got suits from Spain, they did a Day of the Dead Mexican theme including face paint.

They always take the costumes to the nth degree.”

The band toured earlier this year in support of its latest album, 100 Lovers, which continues DeVotchKa’s globally influenced folk-punk, drawing on influences from around the world like Eastern European gypsy tunes, mariachi horns, American pop and Indian strings.

9 p.m. $5 If mixing with vampires doesn’t appeal to your purist taste, you’re probably looking for The Widow’s Bane.

Zombie-ism is a full-time gig for the Boulder band, whose creeping sound — they call it zombie pirate polka — features shifting tempos, Baroque gypsy-folk leanings, and a slew of story-style lyrics about stranded, love-lorn sailors at the bottom of the sea. Widow’s Bane, playing Shug’s Oct. 29, feels like it’s been pulled straight from a Tim Burton musical, but with a better backstory.

“All those other zombies are bullshit,” says singer Gov. Mortimer Leech. “Real zombies like us, we’re brought back to life by Lucifer.”

Despite this background, the group’s lyrics aren’t exactly Satanic. They spend a lot more time bemoaning love gone wrong.

“These particular zombies,” Leech says, indicating the band, “were created when their beloved killed them. The rage and lust for revenge brings the heart back. We didn’t quite die, and we came back to haunt them. They say it’s a virus, but that’s metaphorical.”

Night of the Living Dead Oct. 29, Muenzinger Auditorium, CU campus, 7 p.m. $7

The seminal 1968 zombie film horrified audiences in its graphic, groundbreaking depiction of the shambling creatures. In a farmhouse near Pittsburgh, a small group fights to defend itself from a creeping horde that kills and eats the living.

By today’s standards, it’s not much of a horde.

The most zombies we see onscreen is 12, maybe 15.

But co-writer and director George Romero didn’t just set the standard for how zombies act.

He also established the true conflict at the heart of most undead narratives: the survivors’ fights with each other. Conflicts between farmhouse occupants prove just as dangerous as the undead.

The story may be basic, and the zombies are positively glacial, but the enduring power of the film is its message. Its meaning has been read in terms of race, gender and the middle class of the 1960s.

Zombie expert Peter Dendle calls the film “a chilling parable of society in civil collapse” in his essay “The Zombie as Barometer of Cultural Anxiety.”

Indeed, if the action’s outdated, the cultural messages are not.

“Romero is philosophical and political,” says Winona State Assistant Professor of media studies Andrea Wood. “He’s about allegory and metaphor.”

Sight, sound, mind and mirth Serling survives and thrives in Lafayette

alloween is but a few us daily, what a gift is laughter? The scant days away, and folks at the Theater Company of whether you celebrate it Lafayette (TCL) seem to know that as Samhain, Allit’s the best medicine, for they have Hallows-Even or the brought forth the eighth iteration of Feast of Heedless Inebriation, it’s time their much-beloved tribute to one of to get ghouly, ghostly and ghastly once the staples of TV’s bygone years with again.

Children’s hearts across the land are already racing in anticipation of the diabetes-courting sugar jackpot soon to be their due. Normally demure and decorous women are doing the math on just how much tit they can show in their “sexy _______” costumes and not get arrested for indecent exposure. Their male counterparts are working just as hard to determine the minimum amount of effort they can put into a costume and still bag a slutty Palin or cross-dressed Sheen.

Let us not forget, however, that Halloween is all about terror, and 2011 brings a smorgasbord of scares for each and every one of us. Liberals are crapping their pants at the prospect of a oneterm Obama and the Perry/ Romney/Cain monster that could Ian Gerber as Rod Serling oust the Great Black Hope next year. no longer produce their Twilight Zone tribute every Halloween but now only every other year, TCL has added a fourth episode to the production. This time around, lucky audiences get to see “The Last Rights of Jeff Myrtlebank,” “Obsolete Man,” the well-known, title-tweaked classic “Nightmare at 27,391 1/3 Feet” and “Changing of the Guard.” TCL also retains its traditions of enacting classic ’50s and ’60s commercials between each Twilight Zone episode, the intermission Trivia Challenge and Ian Gerber’s excellent portrayal of Rod Serling himself. And, of course, Twinkies continue to play pivotal roles in the night’s entertainment.

As TCL notes, “while the innocence of late-1950s television seems campy today, the stories told in the series still have the ability to grip the imaginations of contemporary audiences. We preserve the great storytelling while poking a bit of fun at this cultural signpost.” And fun-poke they do indeed. The opening night audience guffawed whole-heartedly at the country-fried rubes in “The Last Rights of Jeff Myrtlebank” and the manic antics of the wing monster in “Nightmare at 27,391 1/3 Feet.” They also rejoiced at the twist ending of the Twinkies commercial and joyfully ooo, eee, ooo, ah, ah’d along with the Witch Doctor song in the Headshrinker ad.

Whether you watched first runs or reruns of The Twilight Zone or have never even heard of the show, I can’t recommend Return to the Twilight Zone, A Parody enough.

In addition to all the humor, subtle and otherwise, TCL’s version, like the original TV show, never fails to make you think. “Obsolete Man,” the standout segment in my opinion, functions as well or better today than it did when it first aired in 1961 as a cautionary tale of government power run amok.

Funk is Dead

The Motet tags an unlikely canon

hen we first saw the marquee bill for this year’s gig, Dave Watts and the Motet tribbing-up the Dead, the first thing that hit us was — wait, Watts is covering one of the unfunkiest bands in pop music lore, daring to navigate the meanderings of post-psychedelic, shamanistic jug-band Americana, garnished with guitar solos lofted to the rafters by the colliding aromas of patchouli and Humboldt leaf.

Sure, it aligns with Watts’ self-confessed ’70s zeitgeist obsession (the Grateful Dead being, basically, a product of the ’70s, and, no, we’re not going to argue about that), and technically speaking, a little of the Dead’s DNA courses through every post-groove era band out there these days. But what kind of offering does a guy irretrievably invested in edgy, propulsive, afro-beat club offer up at this altar?

Watts admits it took a little while to get to this point; he didn’t arrive as an acolyte.

“I’ve always kind of avoided this one,” Watts told us last week. “They’re just not one of my favorite bands; in fact, I barely knew the music. Never been to a Dead show, never been into the rhythm section,

only really knew a couple of songs … the country stuff, stuff like ‘Truckin’,’ that sort of thing.

“But one of the things I realized after we started doing some of these really popular acts like Michael Jackson and Talking Heads is that it’s really fun to play music where everyone knows every word. That is huge to people. … People want to sing along. Get into it. So I went and listened to the recordings, like Furthur, and some of the old Dead recordings, and you could hear it. The minute they start, they play that first note, everyone knew every word.”

Watts admits this one was a challenge, since unlike last year’s Earth Wind & Fire shows, he and the group didn’t really have an instrumental roadmap. That they weren’t going to really cover the Dead was a given, so instead he set out to re-imagine the music completely, switching up time signatures, charting out a brass section, coaxing his soul-trained vocalists, including the astonishing Jans Ingber, to give the lyrics a new voice.

A suspected poisoning. A mysterious messenger. A grieving widow. A forged date and signature.

A LeCarré spy thriller? No, it’s Mozart’s Requiem, the greatest mystery story in classical music — and the main work on the next Boulder Chamber Orchestra (BCO) concert, Oct. 28-29 in Denver and Boulder (details: j.mp/BCOShows).

The performance, under the direction of music director Bahman Saless, will also feature Boulder’s Ars Nova Singers, with soloists Szilvia Schranz, soprano; Leah Creek, mezzo-soprano; Joel Burcham, tenor; and Matthew Singer, bass.

You may know the legend: A mysterious stranger showed up at Mozart’s door, asking the composer to write a Requiem for an unknown patron. Although he

is yours. Go do your homework.’ But it’s really coming together, I’m excited about it.”

The billing for this gig resonates gently from producer Michael Gaiman’s series of “Jazz Is Dead” tours from the late ’90s and early ’00s, showcasing Dead music as fusion instrumentals in the hands of Jimmy Herring, Billy Cobham and T Lavitz. The onceguarded orthodoxy of the Dead canon was, even by then, not immune to re-interpretation, but the JID tours, staged at the Fox Theatre several times during their run, capably melded the high-energy chops of master fusion players with the crafty instrumental hooks that the Dead incorporated into their gig but often submerged in their deliberately circumspect live delivery.

Watts admits he took a cue from those JID tours.

“I gotta say, that was really my impetus to bring it back around,” Watts says. “I was like, OK, if I have something to call this, I could do it. If it was just ‘The Motet Plays The Grateful Dead,’ psssht, forget it. Sounds terrible to me. But actually being specific, like ‘This is not going to be like you’ve ever heard the Grateful Dead before,’ made it palatable to me. This is something I can work with.

“I tell you, sometimes you have to give yourself a little window or a little theme to get into it.”

Watts is eager to embrace this project and promises a little whiplash, even if the afterglow of last year’s Earth, Wind & Fire gigs still hasn’t worn off.

“Oh, man, that was one of the happiest musical moments of my life. Couldn’t get enough of it. We did it again [after the Halloween runs] in Denver in January, and we did it again in Portland. I would do that show once a month if I could.”

As fall turned to winter, Mozart worked ever more feverishly to complete the work. Eventually he became convinced that he was writing his own Requiem, and even that he was being poisoned. Indeed, he died before finishing the score, which had to be completed by one of his students.

This account is more or less true, but with important gaps. The commission, mysterious as it was, came from one Count Walsegg, a music-loving nobleman of modest talent who enjoyed passing off works of major composers as his own. He wanted to perform “his” Requiem in memory of his young wife, who had recently died — which provides the reason for his anosee MOZART Page 26

More recently, growing dissatisfaction with Süssmayr’s completion has led scholars and musicians to provide “improved” versions of the Requiem — at least seven of which are available on CD. For the BCO performance, Saless has chosen the version by pianist and scholar Robert Levin, created in 1993. Among other contributions, Levin included material not found in most other versions: a fugue on the word “Amen,” based on a short sketch by Mozart.

“We chose the Levin version because we love to expose our audience to new adventures,” Saless says. “And it is a great privilege to be able to discuss intricacies with Mr. Levin.

“He is a great performer as well as a scholar. Because he knows Mozart’s style from the inside, he brought a remarkable insight and sensitivity to his revision of the Requiem.”

The second concert of the BCO season, the program is titled “Piety.” In addition to Mozart, it features Vivaldi’s Concerto for Strings, RV 127, and the Cantique de Jean Racine by Gabriel Fauré.

Saless makes it clear that — unlike the Mozart — there is no mystery to the other two pieces.

“I chose Vivaldi and Fauré to introduce the ‘cast’ to the audience,” he says.

“You hear first the orchestra in the Vivaldi, then the choir in the Fauré, and then both ensembles together in the Requiem.

“The Vivaldi concerto was one of my favorite childhood pieces that made me fall in love with Baroque music.”

And the Fauré Cantique, written when the composer was 19, is “a beautiful little hymn arranged for chorus and strings by John Rutter,” Saless says. “Performing this allows us to showcase the purity of the Ars Nova voices.”

And it completes an intriguingly diverse program, with the cheerful energy of Vivaldi, the intimate sweetness of Fauré, and the majesty and mystery of Mozart’s Requiem: a triple bill and no poison.

Despite losses, seniors hope to inspire Buffs for 2012

The last time Colorado finished a game with two points? That would be Nov. 14, 1914. The Buffs were coming into their matchup with Colorado Mines undefeated, with wins over the Alumni, Colorado State, Colorado College and Utah.

CU fell 2-6 to Mines in Denver, their only loss in the 1914 campaign.

However, Colorado’s top deep threat, Paul Richardson, could return this week, interjecting some desperately needed speed into the Buffs’ offense.

Richardson has missed the past three games, nursing a sprained knee suffered in practice.

With or without Hansen or Richardson, the Buffs figure to be tormented by Arizona State linebacker Vontaze Burfict, considered by many to be the best defensive player in the Pac12.

“He is the straw that stirs the drink with them,” Embree said. “He brings the emotional energy. If it moves, he is going to hit it. That will be conveyed to our team, so don’t be jogging out there and

relaxing and thinking the play is over.

He plays to the echo of the whistle.”

While CU will likely be looking at its sixth consecutive loss, there is no doubt that the Buffs have been extraordinarily resilient and selfless throughout the course of the season, with freshmen volunteering to burn redshirts midway through the year, giving up a year of eligibility.

“I think that says a lot about this team, and I think it says a lot about some of these guys, because they have burned their redshirt,” said Embree. “But at the same time, I think they see it as a way to get ready for the future. They have done a good job.”

CU nets first Pac-12 win Women’s soccer team breaks through against California

C

olorado soccer experienced a major breakthrough last weekend, defeating California 1-0 on Friday.

Coming into the game without a win for more than a month, the Buffs figured to be a major underdog against a Cal team that was ranked as high as 18th in the nation. CU had to play without two major contributors — Coach Bill Hempen, who served a suspension for a red card earned the previous weekend against Oregon, and starting goalkeeper Annie Brunner, who missed the weekend with an undisclosed injury.

Instead of wallowing in their bad luck, Colorado came out inspired, as Kayla Millar, known as a terrific shotstopper who, like Brunner, is shaky when it comes to handling and distributing the ball, filled in admirably, stopping all six shots she faced. While Millar’s performance epitomized the resilience the Buffs have shown all year, it was the defense that came through with their best performance.

Annie Stuller, who, until a couple weeks ago, played virtually her entire soccer career as a forward, volunteered to play center back, and she didn’t disappoint on Friday, pestering the California attack, which only managed to get six of its 20 shots on target.

Bianca Jones also played the whole 90 minutes from her right back position.

The Buffs kept the game scoreless until halftime, and broke through in the 62nd minute. Kate Russell served the ball over the Cal defense for Hayley Hughes, who sped past the Bears’ back line. Emily Kruger, Cal’s goalkeeper, charged at Hughes, who managed to

get a slight touch on the ball, which slowly trickled into the back of the net.

“The team is awesome,” said acting head coach Chris Gnehm, who filled in for Hempen Friday. “They have, at every turn, had the same mentality.

Everything that comes their way, they’re ready. Whatever it is, they have the will to succeed. They’re a resilient group.”

From Hughes’ goal until the final second, Cal maintained most of the control, including a nail-biting free kick after a CU handball with under 10 seconds to go, but Millar and the defense came up big for the Buffs, who celebrated their first Pac-12 win in school history.

The Buffs came out on top in a type of game where they typically end up in second place. Countless times in 2011, Colorado would outshoot their opponent, only to lose, and that Friday, California had double CU’s shot total, but the Buffs managed to find a way to leave Berkeley with a win.

Colorado went from one daunting challenge to another, as they traveled to Palo Alto to face Stanford, the consensus number one team in the nation. The Buffs simply didn’t have the talent to compete with the Cardinal, losing 4-1.

Russell scored the Buffs’ lone goal on a penalty kick earned by Stuller.

The Buffs didn’t just lose the game against Stanford, they lost arguably their best player, Amy Barczuk, to a head injury in the first half. Her status for the weekend is questionable.

Colorado closes out the home schedule this weekend against UCLA and USC on Friday and Sunday, respectively.

Not genius, but still good

T

he most startling shot in Paranormal Activity 3 is something even the film’s determined unbelievers would concede to be damnably effective.

Suburban San Diego three-story home, 1988, in the middle of the VHS tape era. A homemade surveillance camera attached to an oscillating floor fan scans left, then right, and we see a mother (Lauren Bittner) of two girls (Chloe Csengery and Jessica Tyler Brown) walk out of the kitchen.

She is alone. The kitchen seems to be its usual self, each appliance and bowl and fork and spoon in its place.

A few seconds later she re-enters the same kitchen just as the video camera pivots to reveal that everything has disappeared. And then …

Modest, low-fi horror continues to find a friend in the cheapo but very shrewd Paranormal Activity franchise, which consists now of three films designed for single-use, one-time consumption. But you know what? They work. Like its predecessors, the new “found footage” lark builds tension and dread slowly and sticks it to you just when you need something to happen.

Mental illness explored

omething really bad is coming, an impending apocalypse, and only Curtis (Michael Shannon) can see it. His mom was institutionalized with paranoid schizophrenia when he was 10, however, so are his dreams prophetic or is he starting to lose it? This is the plot of Take Shelter.

Stuck in the chaos is his loving wife Samantha ( Jessica Chastain), who wants to support him and tries to understand what he’s going through but can’t avoid his increasingly bizarre, erratic and random behavior. When Curtis spends the money they need for their daughter’s cochlear implant on expanding their storm shelter, she leaves. But is he right? Is there a storm heading their way?

Films can get mired down in narrative backstory where passages end up boring and uninteresting, typically because the expository portions appear prior to us becoming engaged with the characters. Director Jeff Nichols nimbly avoids this time and again in Take Shelter with hints that daughter Hannah (Tova Stewart) hasn’t always been deaf but with no explanation of what happened for Boulder Weekly

Like the whining dolts in The Blair Witch Project, the key character with the camera, a wedding videographer played by Christopher Nicholas Smith, finds reasons to film all his own worst experiences with the supernatural and the paranormal and the ooglyboogly. It’s a ridiculous conceit getting slightly more ridiculous by the film. But I have been entertainingly spooked by the results each time. And since these films played a significant role in killing off (for now) their aesthetic opposite, the vicious-spirited and dreary Saw franchise, it’s hard not to feel warmly toward

the little ghost stories that could.

In this prequel, we get to know “Toby,” the unseen demonic frenemy of preteen daughter Kristi (Brown). The cross-cutting between three surveillance camera set-ups in Paranormal Activity 3 — one near the kitchen, one in the girls’ bedroom upstairs, one in the adults’ bedroom — is more aggressive than the rhythms in the first two. The directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman made the recent mysterydocumentary Catfish, and their weaselly fake-naturalism proves a fine fit for this project.

At Wednesday’s screening, there was no reminder or interest in getting the audience members to turn off the cellphones.

Tweeting about the movie during the movie was, in fact, encouraged. Paramount’s social-media marketing strategy for the Paranormal flicks has been a work of genius. The films are not works of genius. They are, however, wily reminders of the virtues of restraint when you’re out for a scare.

Since film is already a dreamlike medium, there’s a self-reflective element to Take Shelter that also serves as a metaphor for the entire experience of viewing a movie.

When Curtis dreams of his dog attacking him then buys a doghouse so that Red can sleep outside after having been an indoor dog his entire life, is Curtis acting with admirable forethought and caution, or is he losing the ability to differentiate between reality and his dream state? And what does that say for us, the cinematic audience, as we walk out and discuss the film with our friends?

The production team does a splendid job of evoking the rhythms and values of small-town America, where corn fields come up to the edges of backyards that themselves flow into one huge park-like space

undivided by fences or property borders. Driveways are dirt, cars park on the lawn, and people do yard work and retrieve newspapers in bathrobes. Family dinners happen with a palpable weight of obligation, and when everyone sits around and glowers at each other, it’s just another Sunday.

One of the most dramatic scenes takes place at a church brunch where Curtis’ best friend and solid supporter Dewart (Shea Whigham) is upset to see him, and they get into a scuffle. Curtis cracks and it’s the only time in the movie where we see him angry at his situation. Is he going crazy, damn it, or is something really, really bad heading their way and he’s the only person who can see it and the only person who is taking steps to protect his family from the impending storm?

There’s much to like in this quiet, powerful film that addresses the challenging subject of mental illness in a fresh and interesting manner. I would recommend it strongly if not for the ending, which throws into question the entire narrative journey and any conclusions that the viewer has made regarding Curtis, his visions, and whether or not there is indeed a storm coming.

Restaurants band together for First Bite Boulder

irst Bite Boulder is coming back to Boulder County this year in full force, and it’s not too early to make reservations.

The week of Nov. 11-19, more than 40 restaurants will participate in this special food event, and each restaurant has prepared a unique three-course menu for its guests. Every menu offered will have the fixed price of $26 a person.

Making early reservations to the restaurants participating in First Bite Boulder is highly recommended, says Josh Dinar, a co-founder of the event and publisher of DiningOut Magazine. Co-founder Kate Lacroix, owner of d i s h publicity, says that organizers chose the week before Thanksgiving because it would give restaurants a chance to showcase the local dining scene for a reasonable price during a time when people are saving money for the holidays.

“That week, which is typically one of their slowest weeks, has turned into one of their busiest weeks,” says Dinar.

Dinar and Lacroix got the idea for First Bite Boulder after they spent time in the restaurant scenes of several large cities across the country. Restaurant weeks were just starting to crop up, Dinar says, and they wanted a chance to highlight Boulder’s robust restaurant scene.

“Once we saw the increase in the number of restaurants that were cropping up in Boulder, we thought it was a great idea,” Lacroix says. “It’s been very successful. The community really likes it.”

First Bite Boulder started six years ago, and has had a steady following of restaurants and community members since its inception. Most of the restaurants that participate have done it every year, Dinar says, and the week is a chance for restaurants to work together and reach out to the Boulder community.

“For many of them, this is a way for them to say thanks to the community,” he says.

Longmont, says that the restaurant has participated in First Bite Boulder for four years. The restaurant sees a lot of different people than they normally would during that week, which gives those people a way to see what the restaurant is all about, she says. First Bite Boulder is a chance for people to experience a different kind of dining than they would otherwise, she says.

First Bite Boulder is also a way for restaurants that have pricier menu options to showcase their offerings with a lessexpensive menu, Dinar says.

Phil Goddard, the owner of The Greenbriar Inn in Boulder, says that First Bite Boulder is good exposure to people who wouldn’t normally think to dine at the restaurant due to its higher menu prices. The restaurant has participated in the week every year, he says, and it has been a way for them to establish new customers.

“It’s great,” he says. “It falls at a perfect time of year.”

The week of First Bite Boulder is a chance to solidify Boulder’s place on the map as a culinary destination, says Lacroix. The week is designed for people to experience something different, while getting to know the essence of the restaurants themselves.

“A lot of restaurants are really creative. They give lots of choices,” says Lacroix. “There is something for

everybody.”

Café Aion participated in First Bite Boulder as a brand-new restaurant last year. The week was a time for people to see what the restaurant was all about, says Matthew Kenny, a manager at the restaurant.

The staff at Café Aion hopes that this year’s First Bite Boulder will generate an even larger audience now that the restaurant is more established in the community, Kenny says, and they have tailored their special menu to give diners a chance to see what kind of food the restaurant serves.

“It’s a true reflection of what our restaurant sees on a nightly basis,” he says.

“We really want people to have a great experience.”

As Boulder’s restaurants join together to create a time for people to go out, eat and enjoy themselves, First Bite Boulder is also a time for the rest of the nation to look at Boulder’s dining scene, and see what it has to offer.

“There is already a national spotlight on Boulder, but this is just a great way to highlight the unique things that restaurants here do,” Dinar says.

Dessert Diva Walnut Crusted Creamy Pumpkin Cheesecake

ou knew it was coming.

Didn’t you? Or am I just convincing myself that you actually care about my pumpkin treats?

Or that every year I share my worldfamous cheesecake recipe containing … wait for it … pumpkin. Yes, pumpkin cheesecake is the recipe that I made on Live with Regis and Kelly, and it is still requested year after year after year.

Alright, so it is friends and family that request it, not Regis or Kelly, but still requested just the same. And they both did love it when I made it for them on the show, so that’s enough for me.

Now normally this would be a recipe I share closer to Thanksgiving, but because a pumpkin cheesecake was requested from a lovely reader of all things Dessert Diva (see, it isn’t only family requesting it, yay for me), I needed to oblige. So don’t be surprised if another cheesecake recipe pops up in a few weeks or so.

Anyway, the treat coming at you in this edition is Walnut Crusted Creamy Pumpkin Cheesecake. Booo ya! It’s not the most creative use of pumpkin and cream cheese I have done, but it is what was wanted, and as I like to tell you over and over (just so you know how nice I am), I aim to please.

I use graham crackers in the crust along with the walnuts, but just the little addition of nuts really makes a hearty crust. The walnuts taste great with the pumpkin and spices, almost like they were grown all along specifically to pair with pumpkin. Some sour cream, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves are to die for when mixed with the pumpkin puree.

Most cheesecakes are creamy, but this one just seems a bit more velvety and dreamy, so I had to add creamy in the title. You might just want to take a quick sponge bath in it before you bake it. No one will know, and think of how sweet and spicy you will smell, not to mention smooth as silk (or cream cheese).

Remember that you are smarter than the cheesecake. I know a lot of you get nervous about whipping up one, but if you take it nice and easy, and follow a few simple rules, such as having all ingredients at room temperature, and don’t beat it like it’s killed your kin, you will be just fine.

Walnut Crusted Creamy Pumpkin Cheesecake Crust 2 cups graham cracker crumbs 1/2 cup walnuts (chopped finely) 2 tbsp. granulated sugar 1/4 tsp. cinnamon 6 tbsp. butter (melted)

Filling 3 (8-ounce) packages cream cheese (softened) 1 (15-ounce can) pure pumpkin puree 1-1/2 tsp. vanilla 1-1/4 cup granulated sugar 1/4 cup sour cream 3 eggs 1-1/2 tbsp. flour 3/4 tsp. cinnamon 1/8 tsp. nutmeg 1/4 tsp. cloves

Preheat oven to 350. Wrap foil around 9-inch springform pan. Lightly grease bottom of foil. Place pan on baking sheet.

In small bowl, combine crumbs, walnuts, sugar, cinnamon and butter until crumbs are moistened. Press down, and slightly up sides of prepared pan. Bake for 5-6 minutes. Take out, set aside.

In large bowl (or food processor) beat cream cheese until smooth. Beat in pumpkin puree, sugar, vanilla and sour cream. Add in eggs one at a time, and beat until smooth. Mix in flour, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves until just combined and batter is smooth. Pour batter over top of crust. Bake for 50-55 minutes. Edges will start to puff, and center will still jiggle. Take out and let cool for one hour on counter. Wrap with Saran and place in fridge for two to three hours or overnight. When ready to serve, place on serving platter and unlock springform latch. Dust with powdered sugar. Cut into slices and serve with whipped cream. Enjoy!

Note: After you remove from oven, gently go around edge of cheesecake with sharp knife to loosen and to help prevent cracking.

Avery Brewing

Everyday 5:00 - 6:30 pm Pinyon hosts a Rumpkin party The Pinyon is hosting a release party for Avery Brewing Company’s Rumpkin Draft on Sunday, Oct. 30, from 4 to 7 p.m.

Rumpkin is a strong pumpkin ale aged four to six months in Gosling’s Old Rum barrels. It is 15.9 percent alcohol by volume and has hints of nutmeg, cinnamon and ginger.

“Rather than making another pumpkin beer that tastes like pumpkin pie, we wanted to create a unique pumpkin ale,” says Joe Osborne of Avery Brewing. “Rumpkin is very representative of what Avery does best — making big-ass beers.”

About 500 cases of Rumpkin were brewed in early October, and the event at The Pinyon may be one of the few opportunities Boulderites have to experience Rumpkin on draft.

The event will also feature a Halloween costume contest. The attendee with the best costume will receive a six-pack of Rumpkin. Fallthemed appetizers and cheeses from Cured will be served alongside the beer.

Wine festival this weekend This weekend, the Boulder Wine Merchant is hosting a Burgundy Wine Festival.

The festival will feature multiple events highlighting Burgundy wines.

On Saturday, Oct. 29, Mateo is hosting a lunch with a Burgundy-inspired menu and several Burgundy wines.

The meal will be served family style, and seating will be limited. That evening, Frasca is featuring a “Grand Cru” dinner. Seating at the dinner is limited to 20 people and will offer rare Grand Cru Burgundy wines and a special menu.

Columbine does garden-to-table On Oct. 22, Columbine Elementary began a garden-to-table program through the Growe Foundation and with the help of volunteers in the school community.

Parents, teachers, students and representatives from the Growe Foundation prepared garden beds and decorated the garden at the school.

The Growe Foundation has launched the program at 13 other BVSD schools.

Odell uncorks new four-pack On Nov. 5, Odell Brewing will offer their Mountain Standard Double Black IPA. The brew will be offered in a four-pack, and features hops grown on Colorado’s western slope, which were hand-selected in August.

y the time this article goes to print, the streets of Boulder will likely be buried in a wet slurry of dirty snow, and the high country will be harvesting its snowpack foundation for the winter ahead. For those seeking outdoors adventures, the time between late October and January can feel like something of a dead zone. The combination of seasonal access road closures, late sunrises and early sunsets and the general psychological effects of colder, fluctuating weather all contribute to more time on the couch and less time in the wilderness. There’s not quite enough snow for skiing and snowshoeing, but at the same time, there’s too much ice and frozen earth to enjoy high-altitude hiking and biking.

The conditions may not be ideal, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t options for those willing to bundle up a bit — or take a drive to some of the warmer parts of our state.

Here are some of the great places waiting to be explored both locally and farther down the road in regions of Colorado.

Hiking Technically, there’s no reason to stop hiking just because the seasons are changing. Of course the challenges and difficulties of high peaks, especially those over 13,000 feet, become more daunting in harsher weather. Jefferson (about a three-hour drive from the metro area), is a 12,431-foot peak that is a magical climb year-round, thanks to the incredible rock formations that adorn its broad summit. Trailhead access is maintained year round. A well-marked trail and unique scenery make the 11.2-mile, non-technical round trip a great six- or seven-hour outing. Likewise, a trip south to the Great Sand Dunes National Park near Alamosa is a spectacular late autumn destination. Framed by the high peaks of the Sangre de Cristo range, these 750-foot-high dunes take on a mystical aura in the chilly night. Camping under an endless field of stars during the new moon is especially inviting. Closer to home, the Twin Sisters Peaks (11,428 feet) and Estes Cone (11,002 feet) out of Estes Park are great moderate summit hikes that poke just enough through treeline to feel rugged but never bear the full brunt of the windy, wild exposed conditions of the alpine tundra. And, of course, in our own backyard, don’t forget the trio of Green Mountain, Bear Peak and South Boulder Peak lurking behind the Flatirons.

Rock climbing Some climbers relish the colder weather, as it means less traffic at the local crags (but watch out for those Indian Summer weekends when the rock hounds come out in droves). Many prefer to take the short drive to Table Mountain in Golden where the southand west-facing cliffs get a healthy dose of sunshine year round. There are plenty of great routes of all levels, mostly sport and top ropes. If you want to expand your horizons, a drive out to Rifle is worth the time, especially for sport climbers who want to push harder grades. Mountain biking The one part of the state that hits its sweet spot in late autumn is the Fruita/ Moab area, especially for mountain bikers. The blast furnace that makes summer desert riding so miserable lets up, transitioning to mild temperatures in the day and chilly, campfire-friendly nights.

This is a great time to explore areas like White Rim and Rabbit Valley, among dozens of others in the region. Locally, the Golden area trails, especially White Ranch, get a lot of sun exposure and stay rideable most of the year. And don’t forget that Colorado Springs has some fantastic rides and is far enough south to get slightly warmer conditions than the rest of the Front Range, despite its higher elevation.

Road biking Finally, disciples of the skinny tire will find warmer rides waiting for them in the same Fruita/Moab area that climbers and bikers flock to. The desert roads are long, warm and perfect for epic days, with great post-ride breweries to boot.

The western migration is the most logical escape, but why not consider some of the bucolic roads and far off farmlands of southeastern Colorado, an area few seldom have an adventurous reason to visit? There is a great collection of rides in Colorado at crazy guyonabike.com. Check out the rides in Kiowa and Washington counties for some eye-opening adventures.

Soon enough, it’ll be time to break out the skis/snowshoes/ice axes/thermal underwear, but until the winter hits in earnest, there’s still plenty of adventure waiting to be had.
