Creek Fest fracas (Re: “Ruffled feathers,” News, Oct. 14.) What a great article. But I have to say I’m with Chris Dailey on this matter. Why is the city of Boulder interjecting itself where it should be the “silent partner”? Think about it. They didn’t want anything to do with the Boulder Creek Festival before because it was a loss in revenue and were ready to chalk it off. Now, it’s generating revenue and bringing in people from everywhere, which means more money, and, in reality, isn’t this what it’s about on the city’s side? Money.

More people mean more traffic, more foot traffic, more of everything — the good and the bad. To deal with it doesn’t mean putting a bid out for someone who doesn’t have our best interests at heart, but the heart of city officials. They live in expensive homes with expensive cars and look down their noses at the rest of us, pretending to be part of this community. If they really were true to Boulder, this would not be happening, and it would never be an issue. Ever.

“However, it is our contention that a change in ownership will be in the best interest of both the City of Boulder and Boulder Creek Events.”

What a crock! Dailey wanted to do something for Boulder out of his own pocket to save said venture. Yes, in that sense, it was a great business opportu-

Monsanto takes a tumble

is investigating the corporation’s antitrust activities, and global opponents of genetically tampered crops have been scoring victories in the fight to stop their spread.

Monsanto’s response to this rejection of its crop wizardry has been to double down on wizardry. Its new corn seed, for example, has not one, but eight altered genes in it!

But farmers aren’t buying the mumbo-jumbo, and Wall Street has pushed Monsanto’s stock price down by two-thirds. As one market analyst now says, “This may be the worst stock of 2010.”

pockets instead of PLAY or the Parks and Recreation Division? City members should be walking hand in hand with this project, not trying to bully their way into a great event. Didn’t learn from the Invesco Field at Mile High incident, did we? What’s in a name? Everything.

And in the spirit of what Boulder is about, Dailey should continue to run things without having to worry or wonder about the next year. The city, on the other hand, is being a petulant child, giving Boulder a worse name than it already has. They want Boulder to be like Louisville or Denver and to lose what spirit of life Boulder people have. “The best bang for your buck.”

It’s always been the best smile in the world to give when a Denverite speaks with a true Boulderite; “you people” they say as they shake their heads, not understanding why or that we care about each other, our community, the type of businesses that are here. We care about the environment and how we treat it. It’s truly the “People’s Republic of Boulder — Keep Boulder Weird.”

Stupid Boulder (Re: “Vote!” cover story, Oct. 7.) I would like to say thank you for your Vote 2010 cutout section. While I am proud that we disagreed on most issues, we did agree on a few. As a Boulder resident for almost six years, I have learned a couple of things: 1) While Boulder may be a beautiful city, it is full of some of the most stupid people on the face of this planet; and 2) Most of the residents are ultra-liberal progressives. Coincidence? I think not. After the atrocities committed by the Democratic Party since the 2008 elections, one must be either stupid, ignorant or a socialist to completely agree with the policies set forth by the left wing in America. Most people in America would agree with me. In conclusion, I would like to thank you for showing just how dumb the residents of “The People’s Republic” really are.

Bosley wants guns at CU There are many reasons not to vote for Steven Bosley as CU regent and as many reasons to vote instead for CU law Professor Melissa Hart. Here are three big ones. Bosley wants to jack up tuition at CU by a whopping 9.5 percent per year for four years, or nearly 40 percent by 2015. You think higher education at CU is expensive now?

Professor Hart wants to revive state funding for higher education rather than rip off students and their hardworking parents.

Bosley also wants to wipe out need-based financial aid for students from middle and working class families. He talks a good line about “diversity,” but jacking up tuition and slashing financial aid will let only the wellto-do attend CU. And forget about any more ethnic minorities landing on CU’s nearly lily-white Boulder campus.

Professor Hart is all about diversity and is appalled at Bosley’s desire to wipe out need-based financial aid at CU. Finally and most ominously, Bosley wants to allow loaded guns on campus.

Can you believe this guy, in light of the Virginia Tech massacre and the recent shooting spree at the University of Texas? Apparently, Bosley doesn’t give a rat’s patootie for the safety of CU students, faculty and staff. His love for guns seems to come first.

Professor Hart hasn’t taken a formal position on guns, but can you imagine a professor and mom like her wanting loaded guns in college classrooms? Think about it when you vote.

Steve Bosley for CU regent Let’s break some rules this election season. I will certainly be breaking a few of my own. Incumbents worry me as career politicians, so I tend not to vote for them. Additionally, my party’s candidates gain my favor in races where they run.

In past elections, many local and state races offered few choices.

Normally I’d vote for Libertarians, or at least an exchange of warm bodies. I certainly wouldn’t vote against my principles of fiscal conservatism and social liberalism.

The CU regent-at-large race forces me to break some of the rules without tossing my morals out the window. I am supporting Steve Bosley to continue as CU regent.

Soldier of Fortune’s 35th anniversary

oldier of Fortune Magazine, liberal Boulder’s favorite mad aunt in the attic, will put out its 35th anniversary issue next month. So in honor of the occasion I thought I’d share some SOF stories.

But first full disclosure.

I first met Robert K. Brown, the future editor and publisher of Soldier of Fortune Magazine, in 1961 during the Bay of Pigs invasion.

OK, we weren’t on the beach, on the boats, in the loop, or any closer than 2,500 miles from the action. But we were both all for getting rid of Castro.

At the time I was a freshman reporter for the Colorado Daily.

Brown, a CU alum who at age 29 was 11 years my senior, was back on campus to talk about the invasion (it didn’t collapse for another day or two) and drum up support for the rebels. Then, as now, he gave a terrific interview. I got a great story out of it. In the late ’80s and early ’90s I worked for SOF as an editor and later as a freelance contributor. My name still appears on the masthead as Gun Rights Editor.

Anyway, by the time the Bay of Pigs operation went down, Brown had been a Cuba liberation activist for at least five years — first as a supporter of Castro and then, following a visit to Havana after Castro took over, as an opponent.

In 1957, Brown raised money on the CU campus for the Fidelistas. His

appeal was about as subtle as a Code Pink pie in the face. Brown had acquired use of a big, tripod-mounted 20mm anti-tank gun with a long, menacing barrel. He would set it up on a table outside the UMC with a donation jar in front of it. People gave.

My favorite SOF story is about how Brown rode into Kuwait City during the 1991 Gulf War together with the first coalition troops to enter.

Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in early August of 1990, and by midDecember it was clear that the U.S. would use military force to toss him out. A month later Brown landed in Saudi Arabia.

The war began in the early morning hours of Jan. 17, 1991, with massive allied air strikes on Iraq and Kuwait. For the next five weeks, the war consisted of relentless air attacks and not much else. The press grew restless. By week three the reporters took to interviewing each other (never a good sign). In due course a reporter for the Wall Street Journal interviewed Brown, who by then had discovered that a) some reporters had a lot more access to both the troops and the Coalition command than others, and b) he was not one of the chosen.

Which prompted him to unburden himself of the following sentiment to the Journal reporter (I’m quoting from memory here): “I didn’t come over here to sit around in briefings with a bunch of see SOF Page 8

term. He’s been instrumental in advancing fiscal reform, without trashing needed programs. We’ve seen a lot more transparency at CU since Steve came on board, and that’s not a coincidence. His banking career required openness for stockholders and regulators. He’s brought these skills to CU, knowing that stockholders and regulators are the voting taxpayers.

Steve’s had two successful careers: banking and creating the second largest timed 10K race in the country. Proven leadership and innovation. His short career at CU has helped improve the quality of education by reforming tenure; better scrutiny of private donations; expanding relationships with other universities; and strengthening the infrastructure of the entire CU system with decisive action. This is inviting to students and investors, especially alumni.

Steve Bosley still has his eye on the ball. He’s been concentrating on CU and not climbing the political ladder.

He hasn’t been distracted by politics or corrupted by it. He’s not a career politician, but he is a career mensch.

Let’s not exchange warm bodies at CU, and re-elect Steve Bosley as regent at-large.

Vote No on Prop 102 This election brings some very interesting choices for Colorado. None leads with fear more than Proposition 102, promoted by “Safe Streets Colorado.” The proposition would take from judges the ability to utilize pretrial services programs designed by judicial districts to relieve indigent small offenders of the need to post bond at an un-reimbursable cost of a thousand dollars for a $10,000 bond.

This will force an impoverished second offender of a minor crime to remain in jail at a cost to taxpayers or become indentured to a loan company.

The bill was written by the Allegheny Casualty International Fidelity Associated Bond Company and is backed by Bail USA. It is estimated that it will cost taxpayers $2.8 million a year in unnecessary incarcerations, while giving the bond industry a cash cow of small offenders. The Colorado Criminal Justice Reform Coalition recommends that we vote No on Prop 102.

The atmosphere is struggling to distribute or just contain a lot of excess energy. Take it from a former geography professor — localized extremes in weather are a symptom. Whatever the cause, inaction is bad, and exacerbation is worse.

Similarly, to sympathize with business (remember them?) and its aversion to hiring, it is clear that TPers point to

rational business behavior. Rational is not always beneficial. Government may have demonstrated behavior that is beneficial, but not rational. At least we have avoided bread lines, so far.

Corporations have stockpiled mountains of cash and borrowed even more. For what? To endure the biggest buyers’ strike ever? Would that we could see such organized behavior by American consumers. But a holiday from Wal-Mart would probably feel to most like confinement, so I discount that possibility. If CEOs are deaf, we

should let them see some resolve.

Dispensaries bring in the green Boulder city officials circulated a report this week on how much revenue has been raised from licensing fees associated with medical marijuana dispensaries. And to no one’s surprise, it’s a good chunk of change.

Through August, the city has received $314,861 from our local dispensaries, which naturally raises the question of how the city will use that money.

Granted, all the revenue likely goes into one pot, so to speak, and is then doled out without regard to whence it came, but it would be cool to remind the citizenry of that particular revenue stream with something visible.

Maybe we could use green paint instead of yellow the next time the city restripes the dotted lines on our roadways, to remind us of contributions made by that much-maligned leafy plant. How about using hemp paper when printing city mailings, or making the public comment microphone at city council meetings look a bit more like a spliff? At least one stop sign in the shape of a marijuana leaf, perhaps on The Hill?

After all, the half million that the city will make each year in licensing fees probably doesn’t even come within a whiff of the full amount dispensaries are contributing to the local economy and government. Think sales tax on snack foods, for starters.

Regardless of how the money is used, one thing is clear. Marijuana prohibition makes criminals wealthy and taxpayers poor.

When it comes to gays, lesbians, Buck sucks U.S. Senate candidate Ken Buck is a shining example of how misogyny and other forms of bigotry travel together. Last week, Coloradans learned of a rape case he refused to prosecute largely because the victim’s lifestyle and the abortion he believed she’d had made her unsympathetic in his eyes.

Buck rolled from that controversy into another, in which he asserted that being gay is a choice and compared it to alcoholism.

On Sunday, Oct. 17, Buck told Meet the Press, “You can choose who your partner is.”

“You don’t think it’s something that’s determined at birth?” host David Gregory asked.

“I think that birth has an influence on it like alcoholism and some other things, but I think that basically you have a choice,” Buck replied.

This proves without a doubt that Buck is clueless on gay and lesbian issues.

It’s been proved time and time again that homosexuality isn’t a disease that can be cured. Once considered a mental disorder, being gay or lesbian is now widely recognized as a trait that a person has from birth, like eye color.

So Buck is an idiot on GLBT issues. That’s clear.

But what the past two weeks have truly revealed is that Buck is the same old religious right masquerading as a Tea Partier. A vote for him is a vote for Focus on the Family, which supports him and lauded his comments, claiming that homosexuality is “addictive.”

Addictive? Really? So if the straight guys in B-dub’s newsroom force themselves to kiss each other, will they soon find that leads to their waking up in the middle of the night, shaking and sick, desperate for a hot beef injection?

Somehow, we don’t think so.

Boobophobia Some words are simply too dangerous, even for a good cause.

We’re speaking, of course, about the “I love boobies” wristbands that schools around the country are banning even though they are intended to raise awareness about breast cancer.

So what if a couple of ninth-grade boys are giggling at the word “boobies” during lunch break? You think you’re going to cleanse their minds by removing the wristbands? Come on.

Would the term “breasts” have been less offensive? How about “mammary glands”? (That one would have to be on a necklace.)

This is a slippery slope. You start banning these wristbands, and then kids can’t bring nuts for a snack or have hot dogs for lunch or discuss their pet cats, for fear of eliciting images of body parts.

Let’s keep the bigger picture in mind, folks. This is about breast cancer.

Boulder’s real weed problem City finally making progress in battle against invasive plants

T

he talk around Boulder for the past few years, among young and old, from every socioeconomic background, hippies to businessmen, has been largely about one thing: weed. Since medical dispensaries became a reality, the general public has learned a lot about weed and its myriad subgroups: Island Lady, Chronic Supernova, Red Hair, Durban Poison.

There is, however, another weed that almost no one is talking about. Most don’t know it exists, and couldn’t recognize it if it were growing in their own flowerbeds, open space or even in their meticulously maintained, xeriscaped yard. It too has a lot of names. Some call it non-native. Others refer to it as noxious. But probably the best name for it is invasive.

And unlike the weed people all over the world smoke for pleasure, pain relief or combating anxiety, this weed is dangerous and harmful. It kills nearly everything it touches.

To say invasive weeds are a problem in Boulder County is a gross understatement. They are everywhere and include so many varieties it’s hard to keep them all straight. There’s diffuse, spotted and Russian knapweed; leafy spurge; musk, Canadian, Scotch and bull thistle; as well as yellow and Dalmatian toadflax.

And that’s just a small list of some of the easy-to-spot weeds playing havoc with the natural balance of Boulder County’s disparate ecosystems. Most look normal, like something you’d see every day walking the dog or hiking across open space. They hide among native plants, slowly killing off competitors in the area until they are all that remains. Most are so well adapted to the temperature, arid climate and hardpacked soil of the high-plains desert that nothing but the most vigilant strategy will ever rid the area of the scourge.

And they are opportunistic, taking advantage of even the most devastating situations — like the recent Fourmile Fire — to further their stranglehold on nature.

An initial assessment by the Fourmile Emergency Stabilization (FES) Team, a multi-agency group made up of natural resource specialists and experts from the Boulder County Departments of Parks and Open Space, Transportation, Land Use and Public Boulder Weekly

Health, as well as the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, Natural Resources Conservation Service, CSU Extension Services and Colorado State Forest Service, shows there is high potential for noxious weeds to encroach on the burned area and compromise the establishment of native species. The FES team has recommended emergency stabilization of the area through aerial mulching, seeding, treating known noxious weed infestations, and monitoring for new weed infestations.

That battle against non-native weeds is fought every day right under the nose of a mostly uninformed public by people like Steve Sauer, weed coordinator for Boulder County Parks and Open Space.

“We’re making progress,” says Sauer.

“I think it’s a war that … on some weeds it’s winnable. On others it’s more of a control situation.”

In 2004, the state of Colorado set up a program to list all the invasive weeds it could find and categorize them according to how strong a stranglehold they have. “List A” weeds are those in low enough numbers that they can be irradiated, according to Sauer. “List B” weeds are those the state, county and cities can control, though ridding the area of them is unlikely.

The last category, “List C,” is reserved for those weeds that no amount of perseverance will affect. The state has no plan for eradicating these plants or for stopping their spread. “List C” con-

tains a little more than a dozen plants with harmless-sounding names like chicory, downy brome and velvetleaf. There’s also something called puncturevine, which is just as nasty as it sounds, as well as poison hemlock, which is sometimes mistaken for parsley or carrots and can kill a full-grown horse in as little as five hours.

Where the fight is winnable, Sauer says the county is doing all it can with limited resources to claim victory.

“We’re seeing less and less every year,” says Sauer of the List A weeds.

“We’ve worked with the city of Boulder and the Department of Commerce to do volunteer weed pulls over the last several years. We get about 100 people in the first week of May.” On open space the county employs a group of volunteer weed monitors who hike trails and identify weeds. Sauer says they also get calls from everyday people who see weeds that don’t look right and report them to the county.

That, says Sauer, is the best tool the public has to assist the county in its weed battle.

“They can be educated, know exactly what kinds of weeds they have, know how to control them and be willing to control them,” says Sauer of the public.

plants on their land. Parks and Open Space also distributes brochures, weed calendars and partners with the Colorado State University Extension to put on small-acreage management classes to help people learn to identify and treat weeds. It all helps. But the battle is far from over, and the enemy never sleeps.

From whence they came Weeds are everywhere, but in most cases weeds from here are better than weeds from there. Just like any organism that finds its way to a place where conditions are right for it to not just survive but thrive, weeds tend to die off in places unsuited to their particular evolutionary bag of tricks, and thrive when conditions are more accommodating. For a handful of invasive weeds, Boulder County is the perfect place to settle down and start a family.

But how did they get here in the first place? In most cases people, as usual, are the problem, and not just reckless people.

Laurie Deiter, one of the City of Boulder’s integrated pest management coordinators, says many of the 33 species of plant she now struggles to eliminate were introduced to Boulder County as an attempt to develop richer pasturelands or fix other problems facing land management officials decades ago. One such problem was forest fire damage. In the 1970s, forest fires did extensive damage to the mountain backdrop of Boulder County. Blackened hillsides replaced the lush, green forests, and officials at the time felt getting the color back was the least they could do. Thus began Project Greenslopes, a plan to reclaim the flame-ravaged land. It worked, but the plants of choice were fast-growing, non-native grasses.

“People didn’t think of what [these grasses] were going to do to that habitat,” says Deiter. “[Forty] years later they are still wreaking havoc.”

Other invasives were brought into the area by equally well-meaning people looking for a drought-resistant solution to landscaping.

“A lot of these weeds are escaped ornamentals,” says Sauer. “Myrtle spurge was used as a xeriscape plant and escaped.”

Ornamental trees, too, have become an enormous problem, according to Sauer, Deiter and just about everyone in the noxious weed-fighting business.

“Russian olives creep in and run out cottonwoods,” says Deiter.

Pretty or not, Russian olives do more damage to the environment than one would think. The tree is classified as a List B weed that grows mostly in riparian areas, places that are already under strain. And what they find there, they exploit like no other weed.

“They take a lot of water,” says Sauer. “Some say they can use 200 gallons of water a day.”

This immense thirst causes big problems for plants and trees in the area.

Russian olives crowd out willows and cottonwoods, says Sauer, by spreading out their roots and sucking up all the available water.

But the problem is larger than that, according to Deiter.

“Cottonwoods hold dozens of insects that migratory birds feed on,” she says.

With the cottonwoods disappearing, replaced by Russian olives, which harbor no insects of interest to birds, birds no longer find the food they need to make their long flight south in the winter. The problem is so widespread, according to Deiter, that migratory patterns have actually been disrupted due to the lack of food.

It can be difficult to pin down just how other invasives got here, although most agree they came over sometime in the 19th century.

“A lot of our weeds came from Eurasia,” says Sauer. “They either were spread by birds or came over in hay.

They might have been pumped out of the bilge of ships — who knows. But they’ve been here a long time.”

Fighting the good fight How invasive weeds got to Boulder County is an interesting question, but it has nothing to do with solving the problem.

Getting rid of non-native plants is a complicated task that strains resources and continually tests the creativity and tenacity of weed managers.

“The poor weed managers are under a lot of pressure from the public,” says Tim Seastedt, a University of Colorado at Boulder ecology professor. “I’m sympathetic.”

Seastedt has been looking for ways to rid Boulder County of one of its most pervasive invasive plants, knapweed. Ten years ago, Seastedt began a test of biocontrol eradication, which essentially means using another organism to kill the undesirable plants. In this case, Seastedt chose two different bugs — the seed head weevil and the root weevil — to go to war with knapweed. The experiment, which took place on open space land south of Superior, showed promising results.

“We released the insects in the late ’90s,” says Seastedt. “Other sites nearby have much more knapweed. The [test] site has stayed [relatively] knapweedfree, but less and less as time goes on.”

The reason the knapweed hasn’t been completely killed off by the bugs, according to Seastedt, is a native species that has fought its own battle for survival in the area.

“Since then the site has been invaded by prairie dogs,” says Seastedt. “On disturbed sites more knapweed comes up.”

The problem is actually a mixture of things. Knapweed produces lots of seeds, which generally don’t grow. But they do stay viable for a long time, laying on the

surface waiting for an opportunity to get planted in the ground.

“The knapweed had a decade of seed production head start,” says Seastedt.

When prairie dogs moved in, they essentially tilled the soil by digging their burrows, helping the massive collection of seeds to finally plant themselves. The result is an increasing knapweed population, being fought by an ever-shrinking number of weevils.

“We’ve been monitoring [the situation],” says Seastedt. “The bugs don’t disappear when the plants drop down.

They drop down, as well.”

What the bugs need to make a real, ongoing dent in the knapweed population is an ally — a native plant to help push the knapweed out.

“Insects do the best job in conjunction with plant competition,” says Seastedt. “Bugs need plant competition to work well. The whole goal of killing weeds is replacing it with something you want. That’s been the big difficulty.”

Other factors help the bugs, as well.

“We’ve found with biocontrol it really helps the insects if there is something going on to help them,” says Sauer. “If there’s a drought, that helps.”

Pay to spray Another big problem with weed management is the use of herbicides, chemicals that kill either select plants or every plant they touch. The issue with the chemicals, aside from their questionable usefulness, is the danger many people say they pose to the public. Betty Ball, a long-time member of the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center, has led the charge against herbicide spraying in Boulder.

“The weeds won’t hurt you, but the toxics will,” says Ball. “The period of toxicity that’s on labels is nowhere near accurate. When you do research you find the toxicity lasts much longer than what is reported.”

Ball says the city and county put too much emphasis on chemicals for weed eradication, and even questions the need for eradication at all. She cites a study by Kathy Voth, owner of a company called Livestock For Landscapes (www. livestrockforlandscapes.com), that shows animals could be the best alternative to spraying.

“They found that in a pasture where there were a combination of weeds and grasses, the cows prefer the weeds,” says Ball.

Voth’s website lists sites where cows have been used, to great effect, to keep weeds at bay. One of the highlighted cases is a Boulder County Parks and Open Space program called “We’d Eat Boulder Weekly

The report, Richstone says, will be done in time for a public review early next year.

“We want to know what we’re planning to do for the next season, so we really do need it by early next year,” says Richstone. “We might get one step better or identify areas where we might need to grow.”

The public’s piece of the puzzle While the city and county are vigilant about keeping public lands free of invasive weeds, there’s little they can do about private property, especially gardens where some people unknowingly cultivate problem plants.

Sauer says the best thing citizens can do is to learn what constitutes a noxious weed.

“They can get educated,” says Sauer, “know exactly what kinds of weeds they have, know how to control them and be willing to control them.”

Mikl Brawner, co-owner of Boulder’s Harlequin’s Gardens, says there are safe, organic options for keeping your lawn weed-free.

“The alternative to weed and feed is corn gluten,” says Brawner. “Put it on in February and September, and it keeps the weed seeds from emerging.”

In addition to keeping the home front clear of weeds, Sauer says there are plenty of opportunities to lend a hand on public lands, as well.

“We’ve got volunteer groups, monitors that hike trails and identify weeds and let us know where they are,” says Sauer. “If people are hiking on open space and see a weed, just call us and tell us. That would be great.”

Richstone says Boulder’s Open Space and Mountain Parks does no spraying whatsoever.

The county’s Parks and Open Space department does spray, according to Sauer, but works hard to notify the public when and where it plans to use chemicals.

“We’re pretty careful because it is a big deal,” says Sauer.

The county has established a weed hotline so residents can call to find out where chemicals will be applied. The county also puts out a monthly notice listing areas designated for spraying and places signs in those areas to warn the public.

Beyond that, Sauer says, the state has a pesticide-sensitivity registry the county uses to notify residents near spraying areas before any chemicals are applied.

Richstone adds the city takes its weed control policies and the tools it uses seriously — so seriously that it has decided to seek an independent review of its programs and practices.

“It’s been a number of years since [the weed management plan] was put in place,” says Richstone. “There’s been a lot happening in the field. Let’s look at what other communities similar to ours are doing and make sure we’re using best practices. I’m sure we will learn something in the process.”

Richstone says the city council has authorized $50,000 to hire a consortium of three integrated pest management consulting companies: Integrated Pest Management Institute of North America, Pesticide Research Institute and Osborne Organics.

“The county’s Small Grant program funded this project to teach cows to eat late-season diffuse knapweed,” the site reads. “Cows began eating the weed on the afternoon of the fourth day of training and grazed it in a 2.11-acre test pasture and a 40-acre pasture. In 2008, we followed up as cows trained their calves to eat diffuse knapweed. We trained them all to eat Dalmatian toadflax, and they chose on their own to add Canada and musk thistle to their diets.”

Although he says the county still uses herbicides in some cases to kill weeds, Sauer adds that the chemical component of the weed management plan, primarily a herbicide called Milestone, is becoming smaller and smaller as time goes by.

“We can put on less chemicals than some of the ones we’ve used in the past,” says Sauer. “And we only spot spray. If we see a spot with weeds, we spray that.”

Clearly the efforts of the Peace and Justice Center and other anti-chemical activists have worked to some extent.

Seastedt says outside pressure has played a huge role in the change.

“Right now I think broadcast spraying would be viewed badly,” says Seastedt. “It does more damage to nature than to the target weeds.”

Susan Richstone, the city of Boulder’s comprehensive planning division manager, agrees.

“It’s so important to our community that we be on the leading edge,” she says. “We really use very little in the way of [herbicides] on city properties.”

Sauer agrees the trend is moving away from herbicides.

“You have to know when to [use herbicides],” says Sauer. “We use mechanical control (pulling weeds by hand or digging them up) and cultural control (releasing insects).”

Despite the progress the city and county have made in reducing the amount of chemicals they use, any amount is too much for Ball.

“We already have an incredible body burden from other chemicals in the environment,” says Ball. “They have linked ADD, Parkinson’s and breast cancer to the overuse of pesticides and herbicides. They go and spray the playgrounds where kids are going to play.

What can kids do? They play on the ground.”

Alice Guthrie, recreation superintendent for the City of Boulder Parks and Recreation Department, says playgrounds are no longer sprayed for weeds.

“Our practice now is to only do manual control in playgrounds,” says Guthrie. “When we did the review sev-

he tight races for governor and U.S. Senate have some wondering what effect the Tea Party movement in Colorado will have on those contests and certain ballot initiatives.

Rasmussen Reports released survey results last week showing that Tom Tancredo is now in a statistical dead heat with Democrat John Hickenlooper, when just a couple of months ago it looked as if Hickenlooper would win the race with ease. The Republican/Tea Party vote was expected to be split between Tancredo, who is running under the banner of the American Constitution Party, and Dan Maes, who is the Republican nominee, but Tancredo is surging well ahead of Maes.

Republican Ken Buck is slightly ahead of Sen. Michael Bennet in the U.S. Senate race in several polls, which some attribute to the Tea Party factor. It has Democrats trotting out heavy hitters like former President Bill Clinton, who visited Colorado this week to stump for Bennet.

And several ballot initiatives — especially the three that would cut taxes and government debt and the one challenging “Obamacare” — could see an infusion of support if a sea of Tea Partiers head to the polls, even though all four measures are expected to fail.

Don’t dismiss them The Tea Party’s major platform is reducing taxes and the size of government. The movement opposes the federal health care reform act, for instance, and other measures they perceive as expanding government’s reach.

Nationally, Democratic pundits have tended to be derisive of the Tea Party, especially its more extreme, fringe elements, which have even been accused of racism on several occasions. Political observers say writing off the Tea Party would be unwise.

“The Democrats have been dismissive of the Tea Party and blaming voters for what voters are feeling,” says Ken Bickers, a political science professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder. “They’re missing that this is a fairly large grassroots movement.”

It’s never a good idea to diss voters or their concerns, even if they’re not your voters, because it can simply motivate and energize them, he says. According to Bickers, the Tea Party members attending the meetings and rallies are just “the tip of the iceberg, and what you don’t know is how big the iceberg is.”

Colorado Republican Party Chair Dick Wadhams agrees that Tea Party activism has been a boost to the Republican agenda.

“I think they’ve had a very positive effect on the process and injected new enthusiasm into the Republican Party,” he tells Boulder Weekly, adding that the Tea Party and Republicans see eye to eye on rolling back “reckless spending” at the state and federal levels, the repeal of the health care bill and the defeat of capand-trade proposals. “On basic issues of taxes and spending, I think there is very little difference.”

Will upstart movement spoil hopes of Colorado Democrats in Nov. 2 election?

Party might have on the outcome of the anti-tax measures (Amendments 60 and 61 and Proposition 101).

The Republican Party has not taken a formal position on those measures, he says, but a majority of Republican state legislators oppose them.

Independence Institute President Jon Caldara, a self-described “Libertarian-leaning Republican” who speaks regularly at Tea Party events, says the movement’s grassroots, anti-establishment values are key to its success, because it has no established leader.

“What the left can’t handle about the Tea Party is there is no leader to go after,” he says. “It’s a leftist’s nightmare. … If someone claimed to run it, he or she would be immediately discredited.”

Caldara says it’s not a given that Tea Party members will vote Republican down the line, because they are “just as pissed off at out-of-touch Republicans” who ran up the national debt, for instance.

“Politicians are politicians, and things gravitate toward higher taxes and more spending,” Caldara says.

He also draws a parallel between liberals who opposed the PATRIOT Act and the Tea Partiers who want to reduce taxes, because both are seeking a decrease in government intrusion.

“It’s not just for the angry right, but for the angry left as well,” he says of the movement.

‘Gov. Tom Tancredo’ “This is an anti-establishment year, I think that’s pretty clear,” says Democrat Andrew Romanoff, the former Colorado speaker of the House who lost to Bennet in the Senate primary. “Certainly the Tea Party movement has energized a lot of voters who might not otherwise have been engaged.”

But Romanoff told Boulder Weekly that he doesn’t think the Democrats are underestimating the power of the Tea Party, like Republicans underestimated Democrats when the Dems took control of the statehouse and governor’s office in 2004.

“There are not many folks asleep any more,” he says.

“I can’t remember a year as topsy-turvy as this one.”

Romanoff says Tancredo motivates liberals to vote.

“If you want three words to inspire Democrats, they are ‘Governor Tom Tancredo,’” he says.

Colorado Democratic Party Chair Pat Waak downplays the impact of the Tea Party, noting that the overall number of registered voters has not changed significantly.

“I don’t underestimate the group, but we have 3 million people in this state, and we’re talking about a few thousand people,” she says.

Waak also says she doesn’t place much credence in automated polls like those generated by Rasmussen, a group that she says oversamples Republican men and undersamples women, minorities and Democrats.

Waak says some moderate Republicans may even vote Democratic due to the Tea Party shift to the extreme right, especially “if they feel their party has been taken away from them.”

Sheldon Bloedorn, chair of the Southern Colorado

Tea Party, says his group has endorsed Maes in the governor’s race, while the Northern Colorado Tea Party is supporting Tancredo. Voting for Tancredo would be antithetical to the Tea Party’s anti-establishment values, he claims.

“Tancredo is a career politician who has gone back on his promises,” Bloedorn says, alluding to the former congressman’s broken pledge to only serve three terms in the U.S. House. “He’s not a man of character.”

Bloedorn agreed that the majority of Tea Party members will vote for the three anti-tax measures on the ballot as well as Amendment 63, which asserts that the state should not enforce the provisions of federal health care reform.

He stopped short, however, of predicting how Tea Partiers would vote on Amendment 62, which would ban abortion by defining a person as the beginning of biological development. Bloedorn called that one a “very personal issue,” adding, “I believe in choice, as long as the choice is made prior to conception.”

He also says Tea Party members lean right on illegal immigration, adding that undocumented workers “need to be treated just as they are, which is law breakers.”

But he countered the allegations of racism that continue to plague the Tea Party, saying that members of his group are inclusive of all ethnicities and not opposed to “legal” immigration.

Bloedorn says the Tea Party has been partially responsible for “anointed” politicians like Republicans Jane Norton (a former Senate candidate) and Scott McInnis (a former gubernatorial candidate) being “replaced by the people’s candidates.”

“And 2010 is just the start,” he says. “When they go to Washington, we’ll be monitoring what they do.”

Lu Busse is chair of the 9-12 Project Colorado Coalition, a group that is very similar to the Tea Party — with an additional emphasis on adherence to the U.S. Constitution, as well as a set of nine principles and 12 values. The principles include “America is good” and “I believe in God,” and stress the importance of the family, honesty, justice, hard work, free speech and government answering to the people. The term 9-12 refers to the day after Sept. 11, 2001, when America was united instead of squabbling over partisan politics.

Busse agrees that Republicans can adopt the establishment view just as easily as Democrats. She calls it the difference between “the country club class” and the “country class.”

Like Bloedorn, she says her group will likely vote for the tax-killing and anti-Obamacare measures, but has not taken a stance on the personhood amendment.

When asked if some services the government provides are valuable, Busse replies, “We’re not into ‘no government.’ We believe in limited government.”

She says individuals should wield the most power, with decreasing levels of control as you go up the line.

“The least amount of power should be with the federal government,” Busse says. “We align with Republicans, but not when they want big government.”

isa and Glenn Cratty were looking for a better quality of life when they relocated their young family to Louisville from Los Angeles in 2009. But while looking for another job in her field of corporate management, Lisa realized that the dream could still elude her.

“My heart wasn’t in it,” she says. “Going back to the same thing didn’t feel like why we moved. I’ve always had this creative side, designed jewelry, did sewing and all kinds of craftsy things. It was while I was making some baby pants for my daughter, Teagan, that I thought, ‘Why can’t I do something like this for a living?’”

Her business sense kicked in, and she consulted with a friend who was already running a successful baby gear business online, as well as with her husband, who has his own photography business.

The encouragement Cratty received convinced her to pursue the nuts and bolts of creating a line of organic baby duds, burp cloths and blankets from her own designs. Then reality hit.

“I had all these dreams to do everything local,” she says. “Locally sourced organic materials, local manufacture. It turned out to be way more expensive than I imagined. My

prices would have had to be more expensive than I wanted just to cover the costs.”

So Cratty went to Plan B. “I believe in the ‘triple-bottom line,’ the one that stresses people, planet and profit,” she says. “I hired a couple of consultants to help me find what I wanted abroad.”

Ten months after her careerchanging decision, Cratty connected with a factory in the port city of Tuticorin, India, which has pledged to employ only workers age 18 and up, particularly women. Good working conditions and a decent wage were guaranteed.

“I wound up with people who take care of everything, bringing cot-

ton to a factory where it can be woven, cut, dyed, sewed and shipped out, all in the same place,” she says.

“Teagan and Mack,” named for her daughters (2-year-old Teagan and 8-year-old Mackenzie), was launched in July of this year. Cratty is running the business at home, her garage is packed with supplies, and she has no wholesale business, so she can “grow the business online the first year.”

Besides the business of growing a profit, Cratty says she’s dedicated to a business that makes a difference to the planet.

According to OrganicAuthority. com, “cotton covers 2.5 percent of the world’s cultivated land, yet it accounts for 24 percent of the world’s insecticide market and 11 percent of the sale of global pesticides; or $2.6 billion worth of pesticides, making it the most pesticideintensive crop grown on the planet.”

Which, as Cratty says, is why cotton “is known as the dirtiest crop on the planet. We found one of the largest organic-cotton-growing communities in India to produce our source.”

author David Sedaris has now pointed his pen at the seemingly harmless world of furry little animals

David Sedaris has an odd relationship with animals. By his own admission he has no use for them in close quarters, but is infatuated with the raw and often ugly lives of creatures in their native habitats.

“I’m not a pet person,” says Sedaris, on the phone from his home in France, where he lives with his boyfriend. “Like, walking a dog I don’t like, but watching nature programs I do.”

The author, known widely for his autobiographical and sometimes embarrassing accounts of his family life growing up in rural North Carolina and his subsequent years spent trying to make it as a writer while cleaning apartments in New York City, has penned his first bestiary. Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk is a collection of fables in which animals are imbued with human characteristics to hilarious and often gruesome ends. The book puts the brutality of the animal kingdom on display while simultaneously forcing the reader to examine his own branch of the evolutionary tree. It’s often hard to tell which is worse, the lives of dumb animals or the way humans live with one another.

about a girl who married a lion and a cheetah that was tricked by a mongoose or something and I thought, ‘I can do better than this.’ So I just started writing my own.”

Sedaris soon discovered writing about animals with human characteristics can be quite complicated. One story from Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk follows the lives of a married dog couple and the wife’s lover who lives across the street. She pines for her boyfriend daily but is locked away in her owner’s home, helpless to control her own destiny, a decidedly un-human characteristic.

“Actually when you think about it … those wouldn’t really be people because people can leave the house whenever they want to,” Sedaris says.

“They’d be more like slaves who just never thought of freedom as an option.

But if you were to write a story about a couple like that then you would think ‘Well why doesn’t she just go across the street and see her boyfriend more often?’ But they can’t. They are at the mercy of their master. So, there’s something that kind of keeps them, not in all cases but often, something that keeps them animals.”

Using animals as characters, Sedaris admits, does offer a freedom not provided by human subjects.

“I would lose patience if someone told me a story about humans and they used another name,” Sedaris says. “I mean, like, if someone were to write a

“Sometimes people will be apologetic and they’ll say ‘I didn’t read your book but I listened to it,’ and it’s like, don’t be ashamed of that,” says Sedaris.

“But I see the difference like this: when I’m reading a book, I enter the world of the book. But when I listen to a book it comes into my world. Because I never remember where I am when I read a book. But I always remember where I was when I listened to a book. And maybe some authors would feel like ‘No I’m sorry, I don’t want that. I want you to come into my world. I want you to read the book with your eyes. I want you to come up with the voice.’ I don’t really care because I have a lot of stuff to do. I like to iron my shirts and I can’t read and iron at the same time. I’ve got shirts to iron! I need audio books!”

Country in a Custer mustache Deer Tick mixes punk rock with Hank Williams

our male musicians in their early 20s ramble on stage to the hoots and hollers of several hundred fans packing a small club or theater. The bassist is blond and clean-cut in glasses that give the impression his mother bought them as a Christmas present. He looks like a computer programmer whose biggest thrill probably consists of occasionally drinking 2 percent milk instead of skim. The lead guitarist, with unkempt brown hair and a gigantic, innocent smile, seems like he belongs in the Butterfield Blues Band circa 1966. The bigboned drummer, whose appearance suggests he hasn’t shaved, showered or changed his t-shirt and jeans in months, is so straight-faced one wonders if he’s a really serious guy or simply about to throw up from drinking too much beer.

And then the singer-guitarist and ringleader, a skinny blond kid with a Custer mustache, cowboy boots and cheap yellow sunglasses, stalks onto the stage with sincere intensity, carrying a case of Budweiser. Sometimes he’s in his underwear. Once, in Manchester, England, a few years ago, he was naked the whole show.

And, yes, that’s a real California Raisins tattoo.

The brash young frontman is John J. McCauley III, and the band is Rhode Island’s Deer Tick. From their appearance, the boys of Deer Tick look at first sight like your average group of scenesters playing supercharged Buddy Holly-influenced indierock ala the Hives or the Strokes, but in fact Deer Tick is about as authentically country as contemporary popular music gets.

Through three LPs — the first, 2007’s lo-fi War Elephant, written and performed entirely by a 20-year-old McCauley — Deer Tick has quickly climbed the underground ranks via constant touring and songwriting, expounding on McCauley’s love for Hank Williams, Roy Orbison and Richie Valens while performing alt-country with a decidedly punk-rock attitude and volume. Along the way, the group has earned fans as diverse as Neko Case and NBC’s Brian Williams, and completed a successful tour with Dr. Dog. When Boulder Weekly last caught up with McCauley two years ago, Deer Tick was making its Fox Theatre debut as War Elephant gained steam in diverse circles and McCauley’s beloved Boston Red Sox were eliminated from the 2008 baseball playoffs by the Tampa Bay Rays. This time around, McCauley was just about to return home from a month-long tour of Europe — where he says “the deli spreads in Boulder Weekly

the dressing rooms are better” — when asked about his band’s recent debut on The Late Show with David Letterman, which involved a deviation from CBS’ song selection.

“It was a compromise between us and the network,” McCauley says. “We couldn’t get our keys player, Rob, in the country for the show. He lives in Halifax [Nova Scotia], and at the time he didn’t have his work visa. The songs they originally wanted us to pick from would have sucked without Rob, so we suggested ‘Baltimore Blues,’ and they said that would be OK. Everybody seemed to be happy with it. We went on there to make new fans, so I don’t think it would have mattered what we played — as long as it had a hook.”

In any situation, it takes a special group of young musicians to revel in performing an obscure (and beautiful) indie-swing tune from their debut album when given the chance to promote a just-released album on national television. But for Deer Tick, publicity has come from unlikely situations and proponents.

“Dirty Dishes,” the broken-hearted breakup ballad that turned heads nationwide in 2007 and 2008, eventually ended up on NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams’ much-publicized BriTunes playlist. The

truly despairing track includes McCauley’s now-famous Dylan-esque lines, “I clearly see straight to the back of my skull and I’m shivering all night long. ... I’ve been dreaming about you and only you” and resembles numerous other Deer Tick songs in its possession of both a hook and a generous helping of McCauley’s earnest, raspy and exceptionally nasal crooning.

As the group’s success ballooned, Deer Tick’s subsequent long-plays, 2009’s harderrocking Born on Flag Day and this June’s melodiously confessional Black Dirt Sessions have seen musical and engineering improvements compared to the frugal early days. However, McCauley’s poignantly harsh voice and consistently remarkable songwriting have remained the heart of Deer Tick since the beginning.

Still, McCauley — who says he grew up “listening to everything” — is more than a beerswilling, pantless wunderkind blasting countryrock for raucous young audiences. On The Black Dirt Sessions, the New England-bred singer — supported only by piano — admits in “Goodbye, Dear Friend” that “some stories break your heart / very deep inside where it’s OK to cry.” Even more touching, Deer Tick is currently auctioning off the tour bus they used for all of 2009, with most of the proceeds going to benefit Pakistani flood victims.

“The situation over there is so critical, but it seems that very few people are aware of it,” McCauley said in a recently circulated statement. “Maybe it’s the stigma with that part of the world; I’m not sure.

Either way, we feel really strongly that people should be more aware of the situation and hopefully we can help with that.”

McCauley seems conscious of how fortunate he is to be making a living by playing music in this tumultuous new entertainment world, in which an artist’s pay is almost solely dependent on the quality of his or her live performances. So far, he’s written virtually all of the lyrics and music Deer Tick has recorded; that’s about to change and, according to McCauley, the group is such a tight-knit unit that “by the next album it will become clear that Deer Tick is a band effort.

We’d probably stop playing as Deer Tick if someone were to leave the band for any reason.”

As for the arc of his outfit’s career from The Black Dirt Sessions forward, McCauley says that passion, rather than luxury or stardom, is paramount.

“I just like writing and playing. It would be nice to have a hit, but I’d rather just make albums we can all be happy with and see the world.”

Michael Miller delves into dark days for inspiration

M

ichael Miller sounds like he is in a good mood. He is speaking with an air of calm, pausing frequently between and even in the middle of sentences, always searching for just the right words. At times he is even self-deprecating, realizing how easily he can take himself and his music too seriously. But despite all the evidence to the contrary, it is clear he is keeping his fingers crossed as we speak over the phone.

“I hope my car doesn’t get some huge bill,” he says. “I’m at the shop getting my car’s oil changed, and it always seems to come out about a thousand bucks more expensive than it was supposed to be.”

This, in a way, is emblematic of Miller’s approach to life because he always seems to be waiting for the other shoe to drop. Not that you can blame him exactly; after all, he once endured a break-up on his birthday, which happens to be on April Fool’s Day. “I got a ‘Dear John’ letter and, despite going through that heartbreak on my birthday, it still came to me that, ‘Wow, this will make a great song.’ It’s kind of like the movie Groundhog Day. If April Fool’s Day were every day how cruel and horrible would that be to not only have pranks pulled on you, but then to also have the carpet pulled out from under you in your relationship.”

Most of the material on his latest album, I Made You Up, focuses on relationships. But unlike some artists who prefer to observe them rather than engage in them, Miller’s inspiration is autobiographical.

“Each song is very literally connected to a person, relationship or break-up; it came from some true life experiences,” Miller says. “I’ve found that for better or worse, I write really, really well and stuff ’s just

pouring out of me when I’m going through tragedy.

I’m amazed when someone can write out of happiness.”

He has tried to write during better times, mind you, but the efforts have not gone so well.

“I’ve tried, but the songs always sound like happy, children’s nursery rhymes,” he says with a laugh.

“When you’re writing, you always want to try to affect people the way you’ve been affected by other art. The happy songs just don’t affect me. I’ve had several friends suggest that I should just try and write some happy songs, and so far I have not been able to do it.”

Perhaps it comes naturally for him to write about serious material, but Miller cautions that this should not cause others to assume that he is a miserable person.

“The funny thing is, the songs I have written and recorded, once I’ve gone through everything and some time has passed, I’m actually quite happy when I sing them now,” he says. “It’s just that I’m singing about experiences that have happened in the past.”

is a process and he realizes, and even appreciates, that things take time. Thankfully he has always had music to lean on to help him get through life in the meantime.

“Music has definitely saved me from a lot of pain and insanity, and a lot of bad things that could have happened,” he says. “It’s therapeutic, a catharsis, because it’s helped me work out a lot of troubles or pains or whatever. Music has kept my mind and heart from falling apart.”

Given the immense emotional bond he has with music, it should not come as a surprise to learn that he fell in love with music early on in life.

“As a kid, I can remember getting lost in music, becoming obsessed with it,” he says.

“Sometimes when I ask people what’s their favorite album I’ll run into someone who says they don’t really listen to music, and it’s so amazing to me. I can’t believe that. It’s so sad. Music is so important and vital, and it really does heal people, so to me it’s so amazing. Music has saved me, healed me, helped me to deal with things and to say things I normally wouldn’t have been able to say.”

Music is a powerful medium of expression in and of itself, but as Miller demonstrates, it also helps that he has grown to view the world through a slightly different lens than most of us do.

“Everything has a rhythm or a melody. I hear an airplane going overhead, and it just has this tone to it, or the knocking of a car engine. Everything just makes a certain sound. I used to imagine that everyone thought about things like that. I know now that it’s not like that, but I kind of always thought of music as this language that everybody spoke.”

Monae may have a record deal with Sean Combs’ Bad Boy Records, but her sound is far less easily categorized than anything the artist once known as Puff Daddy ever recorded. ally. And hopefully, it seems like people appreciate that as well. I know if I went to a show, even if I liked the songs a lot, I would get kind of bored after the seventh or eighth song. It would just be like eating the same flavor of ice cream — at some point, it has to lose its appeal, lose its power. So what we try to do is refresh people’s brains every couple songs, give them something different, some visual stimulation, so it doesn’t feel like it’s just one flavor, it’s the whole ... ice cream store.

BW: So you said it also helps keep you guys interested in the music?

KB: Well, not really musically speaking.

For me, because on this tour, I’m not actually playing instruments very often, I’m just singing, dancing and acting with the performance artists. It’s definitely an interesting experience for me, because we change things up a lot. We don’t just have one show that we do every single night; we don’t have just one set list that we do every single night. ... [The performance] is very much a work in progress.

BW: Do you see similarities between you and Janelle Monae, with what you do on the performance side?

KB: Yeah, definitely. We definitely have a strong appreciation for theatricality and fighting the static image. We want to have a lot of visual events that happen throughout the show. It sort of creates that cinematic experience for people. So we definitely have that in common. And she’s really inspiring for me, because she’s such an incredible performer — every single night, she’s just completely kicking out the jams — so, in a way, it’s kind of terrifying, because I don’t want to be upstaged by her, so I have to really put a lot of effort and energy into doing my thing, which is good because it kind of kicks me in the ass.

Careful before you kiss and tell

aren Owen had sex with 13 guys at Duke University. She kept scrupulous notes about her activities. She gossiped about it with girlfriends. Then it leaked all over the Internet.

As the media went overboard, they overlooked key issues regarding sex, privacy and pleasure.

Karen had sex with 13 men.

Whether she had one man or 40 is irrelevant — so long as they are all of legal age and consent.

Karen kept scrupulous notes about her activities. That’s what women do.

Yes, gentlemen, we keep tabs on all of you. Twenty years later we still know your names’, your penis size and how many orgasms we had in your presence.

No, you cannot claim credit for those orgasms. We must own our orgasms and allow them to happen. We’ll give you brownie points for good hygiene, grooming and diversity of touch.

Karen gossiped about it with girlfriends. It would not matter if she told three friends or intentionally e-mailed her entire address book. Now, what may matter here is Karen’s disrespect for confidentiality. If planning to put names on paper, it’s courteous to obtain informed consent before disclosing real identities.

If her thesis was an actual academic work, breaching confidentiality would be the gravest of scientific sins.

If I were in Karen’s shoes, I might be inclined to tell you the juicy details of how I was seduced with a moonlit Pad Thai picnic atop Flagstaff last weekend, then aroused with light touches on the upper thigh, and then brought to orgasm with delicate and delicious finger maneuvering. But if I told you the name of the person who has incredible fingers, I’d be infringing on a person’s privacy — a considerable violation in any field (besides tabloid journalism).

Now, in this case, I’ve been given permission to publish the name … drum roll please … Dr. Jenni Skyler.

Yes, I took myself on a date — and it was grand.

But Karen’s thesis was for recreational documentation. And thus, the only potential liability she carries would be a civil one should any of the said gentlemen decide to bring an individual Boulder Weekly

case against her for defamation of small penis size or lack of adequate foreplay.

At the end of the day, Karen did a lot of kissing and a lot of telling. And though it’s poor etiquette to spread around the names and faces of the men in question, the media has exercised the worst of manners by shaming Karen for engaging in casual sex.

However, it’s unrealistic and unfair to expect young people to stifle their sexual energy. At puberty, we enter an important era of profound sexual changes in bodies and hormones. This is also a time when we give adolescents significant lessons about sex. But silence speaks volumes. “If I can’t learn about sex at home, I guess I’ll go learn about it elsewhere.” (Then they go searching the Internet to inquire about sex and stumble upon drunk college girls named Karen Owen.)

Add social and religious messages that forbid scratching your sexual itch until you get married, and you have a lot of frustration in a time when adolescents are most sexually aroused. Furthermore, some believe the hormones in today’s diet have pushed puberty even earlier, particularly for girls, adding another three to four years of abstinence. And those who postpone marriage to finish graduate school can look at another five to seven years of implied abstinence.

If Karen Owen lived 200 years ago, she would have already had a decade of childbearing. Just because we have culturally constructed a longer window of adolescence and young adulthood doesn’t mean our sexual hormones have gone hibernating as well. Yet no one is getting married at puberty, so thus is born “casual sex.” Yes, the quality of intimacy may be informal, but as long as it’s safe and in the name of “pleasure for both parties,” then it can be chalked up to practice and finding one’s sexual sea legs.

These are key years of sexual exploration and expression for Karen and her generational cohorts. If I was on her faux thesis committee, I’d certainly make her conceal the names of her sexual subjects, but I would give her an A for exploring her own sexual pleasure.

As bouldering’s popularity increases, so does its environmental impact

here was a time when people went bouldering only when they couldn’t get away to rock climb. Bouldering — climbing rock formations and boulders low to the ground — was viewed as a way to improve one’s technical skills and get a climbing fix between hitting more serious projects.

Those days are long gone.

“It’s its own thing at this point,” says Erin Wall of The Spot Bouldering Gym. “We have entire competitions set around just bouldering.”

nical challenges, but also its more social nature.

“It’s shorter distances, but it’s more technical,” Wall says. “So you have shorter distance but you have harder problems within that distance. It’s kind of nice, too, because you can see the whole problem and you can kind of plan it out in your mind before going up.”

And autumn, with cooler temps and students back in town, is prime bouldering time for locals.

“Most of the bouldering, especially up on Flagstaff, is east-facing, so Susan France it’s very hot in the summer,” says Rick Hatfield, a ranger and naturalist with the city of Boulder’s Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP). “It drives a lot of people up into the alpine zone to go bouldering. It’s cooler there, and it’s more adventurous. Summer is really the only time you can access that area.”

But when the leaves start to change, Boulder County residents grab their crash pads and return to their favorite local spots.

Weather like we’ve had these past two months is ideal for autumn—let’s not say “fall”—bouldering.

“We’ve had phenomenal weather,” Hatfield says.

The most popular bouldering areas in OSMP are Flagstaff Mountain and Mount Sanitas.

But with the increased popularity of bouldering comes environmental damage.

“Up until the late ’90s, an area like the Terrain Boulders was on very few people’s radar as a bouldering destination,” says Hatfield, who was an avid climber in his 20s. “Now it’s well publicized, and people go there. In a relatively short amount of time, you can see profound impacts there.”

Often, the impacts of bouldering are more pronounced than those associated with rock climbing.

And the more remote the bouldering area, the more extensive the environmental damage tends to be.

“With climbing, you have two people go out, and you have four feet at the base of a rock climb,” he says. “Once they step off the ground, the damage to the vegetation by those four feet is over. But bouldering — you may have groups of four, five, six or sometimes even larger. That’s part of the draw of the sport. It is a very social activity, and that’s one of the things that makes it fun.”

But having hundreds of people gathering in the course of a week around OSMP’s various bouldering sites leads to devastation of Flagstaff Mountain the vegetation around those features Boulder’s sites, contributing to other most popular problems, such as erosion. bouldering sites.

Greater damage occurs if boulderers attempt to “groom” the terrain.

“That’s where someone sees the potential for a great boulder problem, but the landing is just scary. So they’ll go in sometimes with rock bars and flatten the area,” Hatfield says.

“They’ll move rocks and move vegetation just to make the landing safe. If you want that kind of safe environment, you really don’t need to do anything but go to the Spot Bouldering Gym. You can climb to your heart’s content. You can make the most difficult problem in the world and have a very safe landing. Don’t export that to places like the Flatirons where you have to compete with natural resources.”

Wall says The Spot is there to provide complex bouldering in a safe environment.

“We would never encourage grooming,” she says.

The social nature of bouldering is probably the biggest draw for the gym’s clientele, she says.

“It’s not only climbing, but it’s also a whole social gathering,” she says. “We have more social interaction on the floor than you see at any other gym.”

But sometimes there’s no match for being in nature. For those times, Hatfield encourages boulderers and all OSMP users to follow the rules. Don’t

Pumpkin craze returns to Boulder County

he autumnal equinox and falling leaves seem to make America a little pumpkin crazy. Grocery stores are quick to feature piles of pumpkins outside their doors, while numerous local businesses don pumpkin décor in their windows at the changing of seasons. After wet weather and preliminary frost spoiled a vast quantity of the nation’s pumpkin crop last year, pumpkin enthusiasts are quickly searching for their seasonal pumpkin supply this year.

Boulder resident and pumpkin aficionada Jessica Serowski says she already has at least four cans of pumpkin in her pantry. Serowski, whose birthday is at the end of October, says her family always carves pumpkins to celebrate.

“I always have pumpkin pie instead of birthday cake because I love pumpkins so much,” she says.

According to an article in The New York Times last November, soggy fields from heavy rain in Midwestern states, where the majority of commercial pumpkins are grown, prevented farmers from getting harvesting equipment to the pumpkins during the typical harvesting season in August.

This news thrilled organic pumpkin growers on the West Coast, who typically only contribute to 4 percent of the overall canned pumpkin market, whereas 95 percent of the crop intended for harvesting and canning is grown in Illinois. Last year’s pumpkin crop in Oregon was so good that growers were able to fill a small gap left by the mainstream pumpkin shortage by shipping truckloads of canned pumpkin to various U.S. locations.

They may have not shipped it far enough east, though, because Serowski says canned pumpkin was hard to come by last fall and throughout the spring

and summer months this year in Boulder County.

“When frost came early last year, and there was a limited supply of pumpkin, I could only find it at the Wal-Mart in Broomfield,” Serowski says. “If any Boulder grocers carried canned pumpkin during the shortage, that’s news to me.”

Local pumpkin patches are alive and well in Boulder County, as no serious weather conditions have occurred yet this fall. Serowski says it’s her favorite time of year because it’s great to shop locally.

Pumpkins are a warm-weather crop, planted five to 10 meters apart in soil that holds water well during early July. Lack of water and cold temperatures can devastate pumpkin patches, but even if many portions of a pumpkin’s vine are damaged, the plant can quickly produce secondary vines to compensate for any damaged ones. Honeybees play a significant role in pumpkin fertilization, as the gourd-like plant produces both a male and female flower.

Botanically, pumpkins are a fruit because they are a seed-bearing structure growing from the flowering part of a plant, but culinarily, pumpkins are a vegetable. Nix v. Hedden, an 1893 Supreme Court case, addressed whether a tomato was classified as a fruit or vegetable and unanimously ruled that it is a vegetable.

Based on this ruling, pumpkins are probably more often classified as vegetables because of how they’re used.

An excellent source of fiber and vitamin C, pumpkins help regulate cholesterol levels, promote healthy digestion and boost your body’s immunity. Rich in potassium and magnesium, pumpkin flesh promotes strong bones and aids in numerous body functions. Noodles raises funds During a week-long fundraiser, Noodles & Company’s Boulder and Longmont restaurants raised

$10,000 for the Four Mile, Gold Hill and Sunshine fire departments.

The three Boulder-area fire departments were at the center of the recent Fourmile Canyon Fire, and one dollar from every entrée sold at the four restaurant locations was donated to support the repairs and replacement of equipment lost battling the blaze.

The fundraiser was held Oct. 4 through 10.

Meatloaf with a twist For decades, meatloaf has been a cornerstone of many family meals, but Baker St. Pub & Grill in Boulder is offering a twist on the traditional ground-chuck, ketchuptopped formula.

Mum’s Meatloaf features seasoned ground beef that is grilled for added flavor, then topped with crispy onion rings, creamy mashed potatoes and finally, the piece de resistance, a liberal coating of the local pub and restaurant’s Guinness mushroom gravy. Similarly, Jamba Juice created a Pumpkin Smash smoothie: a creamy blend of pumpkin spice base, frozen yogurt, soy milk and ice.

At a more local level, Moe’s Broadway Bagels offers pumpkin-flavored cream cheese to enjoy with your morning bagel and coffee from the end of September until Christmas. Store Manager Peter Sherman says their recipe is made with regular cream cheese, ground nutmeg, cinnamon and clove, pumpkin pie mix and sugar.

“People love it and ask for it because it’s like eating a piece of pumpkin pie,” Sherman says.

A Boulder novelty and Boulder Police Department nightmare, the Naked Pumpkin Run began in 1999 when two lone men set off for a nude run in the chilly Colorado air, and has since become a growing Halloween tradition.

If pumpkin cuisine and naked pumpkin runs don’t interest you, pumpkin carving may be the next best option. There’s nothing like a handsome jack-o’-lantern to get you in the fall and Halloween mood.

Serowski, who says she loves carving pumpkins, uses wood carving tools from McGuckin Hardware.

“I carved a jack-o’-lantern with a lace design last year that I saw in a Martha Stewart magazine, and can’t wait to do something just as cool this year,” Serowski says.

Dessert Diva Apple Cinnamon Cake with Cinnamon Glaze

OK, maybe my favorite new recipe is here, but I assume it is soon to be yours.

Continuing on with the fallthemed desserts, this week it is Apple Cinnamon Cake with Cinnamon Glaze. Apple recipes are the perfect autumn accompaniment, and combining them with cinnamon and toasted walnuts makes a hard-to-beat treat. I know you can already anticipate the warming scent that will be wafting from your kitchen as soon as the cake hits the oven. A little fact for you: I don’t like the word wafting, but I needed you to imagine the delightful smells floating through the air as you wait for your masterpiece to bake.

All right, just helping you know me better. I’m sure that shed all kinds of new light on me. A few words I do like are moist and tender, which is how this apple cake turns out.

It always makes me feel better that when fruit is the star attraction, somehow that second piece is OK. I mean, an apple a day keeps the doctor away, right? I wonder what a piece of apple cake a day keeps away. Probably me appearing anytime soon on Americas Next Top Model. Yeah, that’s the reason.

I guess I could walk around the Boulder Farmers’ Market and get some exercise. They are still around for a couple more weeks, and they have some great apples for all your baking/eating/bobbing needs and wants. Can’t beat the Farmers’ Market in the fall — such a happy, cozy place to be.

You can make your own home the happy cozy place of the season when you whip out this dessert for friends and family. I think you might even just become the “apple of their eye.” Another fact: I’m a cheeseball.

Now, follow the directions, put some love into it and invite me over when it’s done.

Apple Cinnamon Cake with Cinnamon Glaze 3-4 medium sized apples (I use gala and granny smith) 2 tbsp. lemon juice 1 tsp. cinnamon 1/2 cup chopped toasted walnuts 1 1/2 cups flour 3/4 cup granulated sugar 1 tsp. baking powder 1/4 tsp. salt 1 tsp. cinnamon 6 tbsp. melted unsalted butter 3 eggs 1 tsp. vanilla Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Lightly grease (I use parchment paper on bottom) an 8-inch-by-8-inch baking pan. Chop walnuts and toast for five to seven minutes, take out and set aside.

Core and roughly chop the apples.

Toss with lemon juice and set aside.

In large bowl, sift together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and cinnamon. Stir in melted butter, eggs and vanilla (batter will appear a little thick) until well combined.

Fold in apples until covered with batter, stir in toasted walnuts. Pour into prepared pan. Sprinkle top with cinnamon.

Bake for 40 to 45 minutes until top is golden brown and toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

Let cool. Prepare glaze. Take cake out of pan if desired and place on serving platter. Drizzle with cinnamon glaze and let set. Cut and serve.

Reasonably entertaining diversion

h my God, they’ve shot Dame Helen Mirren! Realizing the Oscar-winning actress is playing a part, and not herself, the thought nonetheless is inescapable when Mirren’s ex-CIA agent takes a bullet in RED. I mean: How dare they?

“RED” stands for “Retired, Extremely Dangerous,” though “Reasonably Entertaining Diversion” works too. For an hour or so, this PG-13 adaptation of a far grislier graphic novel by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner strikes an engagingly sadistic tone. Bruce Willis brings his uber-relaxed authority to retired good-guy assassin Frank Moses, whose former employers are trying to kill him for reasons vaguely specified. He gathers the old gang together for one last showdown against those trying to off them. The string-puller is a sniveling industrialist (Richard Dreyfuss) using the CIA as “his own personal hit squad.”

We have been here before. We were here most recently in this summer’s high-priced junker Knight and Day, in which secret agent Tom Cruise kidnapped Cameron Diaz and eliminated hundreds of disposable assailants on the government payroll. In RED, Frank kidnaps the pension employee played by Mary-Louise Parker, whose character is gagged, tied to a bedpost (in a strategically low-cut outfit) and dragged around like groceries. But she’s a fine sport and grows to love

How so? Let It’s Kind of a Funny Story explain it all for you.

This is the third feature from the writing-directing team of Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden. Their first film, Half Nelson, gave Ryan Gosling his most interesting role to date as a heroin-addicted high school teacher.

Their second, an even richer character study called Sugar, followed a Dominican baseball player as he travels to America to make his bid for the majors, encountering Arizona diner menus and Iowa cornfields and (ensuring an excellent film’s box office failure) a career path quite unlike his initial great expectations.

With It’s Kind of a Funny Story, Fleck and Boden’s first film based on a novel, it’s a different story, capped — rightly or wrongly — by an extremely happy ending the filmmakers do their best to earn.

They’ve adapted Ned Vizzini’s young-adult bestseller about a teenage boy’s five days spent in a Brooklyn psychiatric hospital. The point of view belongs to Craig (Keir Gilchrist), a 16-year-old under persistent pressure from his parents ( Jim Gaffigan and Lauren Graham) to produce a crackerjack entrance essay for a Boulder Weekly

the adventure. The actress’s uniquely twisted comic timing helps this movie’s sense of humor overcome its lust for gunfire.

Mirren adds the class as Victoria, former paramour of the Russian ally played by Brian Cox, whose performance proves there’s no ham like well-cured Scottish ham. Morgan Freeman twinkles as an old fox dealing with cancer and the confines of a retirement home — depressing stuff after the life that he led.

John Malkovich wackos around, wittily, as a CIA colleague who went through one too many LSD experiments. At one point Malkovich bats, baseball style, an airborne missile back at his attacker, who is summarily disintegrated. If the movie proves successful at the

box office, this sight gag will be the reason why.

Screenwriters Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber expand freely on the bare bones of the Ellis graphic novel, inventing a new back story (something to do with Guatemalan war crimes) and lightening up the protagonist. In the original, Frank is a hollow shell who, it’s implied, assassinated John F. Kennedy. Little of that sort of thing has survived the page-to-screen translation. Frank isn’t a dimensional character any more than the characters in Angelina Jolie’s Wanted were characters. Graphic novels offer their cinematic adapters a pre-storyboarded look, along with plenty of ideas of how bullets entering skulls can make a pretty red splat on the nearest wall, plus a hint of a story to satisfy our oldfashioned need for narrative.

But there are limitations — serious ones. Movie adaptations of graphic novels as disparate as Road to Perdition and Sin City can seem awfully thin. Around the midpoint, RED starts repeating itself and spinning its wheels and looking for an ending, well before the ending arrives. The actors have considerable fun with it, though I can’t be the only one who would prefer not to see another movie containing the line “Wow. You really are CIA!” until the summer of 2011.

Checking himself into the facility (Viola Davis plays his supervising doctor), he finds an adoptiveuncle figure in Bobby (Zach Galifianakis), who has been there awhile. Craig also finds romance thanks to fellow patient Noelle (Emma Roberts), survivor of a cutting incident, and a better match for Craig’s personality than the boy’s long-pined-for high school

classmate, Nia (Zoe Kravitz).

Fleck and Boden acknowledge The Breakfast Club as an influence here, and you can see what they’re going for with their blend of pathos and humor. In key ways, though, their sensibility isn’t anything like John Hughes’. For one thing, their commercial instincts are far less ruthlessly driven by “types” of kids and adults. And that’s good.

Fleck and Boden have a knack for lending a documentary, daily-life quality to their exchanges. As a result, an actor as potentially shticky as Galifianakis comes off movingly in a role you don’t necessarily buy.

Gilchrist keeps things very low-key, even monotonously so, but he’s honest. He’s a prime reactor, and doesn’t force a single beat.

The result is both a success and a disappointment.

It’s Kind of a Funny Story, divided into neat little daylong chapters in Craig’s stay, lacks the staying power and bittersweet layering of Half Nelson and Sugar. Yet it holds together. And when the dialogue includes phrases as apt and sharp as “flirt-punched” you think, well, that’s effective by almost any standard.

He wanders through the city, his visions growing evermore distorted and nightmarish. Writer/director Gaspar Noé shoots the film from Oscar’s point of view, so when Oscar takes a psychedelic drug, we see the hallucinations he is having. Cinematographer Benoît Debie allows the viewer to experience Tokyo’s underworld in a most unique way, sometimes floating above the city and watching the story unfurl below. In one extended sequence Oscar takes a trip through the Love Hotel, a dreamlike sexual labyrinth with characters acting out their favorite fantasies. At Chez Artiste. — Landmark Theatres Hereafter Clint Eastwood’s late life/late career fascination with mortality, death and grieving devolves into a cheap parlor trick in Hereafter. This wholly unsatisfying variation on “what lies beyond” shows him to be illsuited to the subject and to the sort of tale that involves setting three disparate characters on a path toward one another for a finale that isn’t so much a payoff as a “Yeah, and?” Rated PG-13. At Flaitron, Century and Colony Square. — Roger Moore Inception Blithely summarized, Inception’s plot would seem confusing and impenetrable. Confusing? No doubt, and that’s what makes the film so enjoyable, as we try to tease and puzzle out what is really going on.

Impenetrable? Hardly. Simply put, mainstream moviemaking just doesn’t get any better than Inception.
