CU’s fracking study

(Re: “CU fracking study author: No pressure from oil/gas industry,” News, Aug. 30.) President Obama has been a supporter of expanded natural gas extraction via hydraulic fracturing (fracking).

Fracking is a toxic, industrialized process that is being brought into our residential neighborhoods without knowing all of the hazards beforehand. This is evidenced by the fact that the National

California market is huge, passage of a labeling law there would effectively become a national provision. Thus, the corporations are mounting a massive PR campaign against Prop 37.

But — oops! — this media blitz is causing a second cropper for them by revealing way more about their conglomerated empires than they want people to know. Another of their carefully constructed consumer frauds is that many multinationals have quietly bought up dozens of popular organic food firms, but they’ve kept their conglomerate name off the labels, hoping that customers will think the organic brands are still scrappy independent businesses.

ational brand-name food conglomerates are coming a cropper over California’s Proposition 37. Actually, it’s a double cropper.

First, they’re frantically scrambling to defeat this citizens initiative, which would establish a state right-to-know labeling requirement on any food with genetically manipulated organisms in it. The giants fear that consumers (damn them!) will reject products containing risky GMOs, so they want to keep such contents a secret. Since the

Science Foundation (an agency that the president controls) has just awarded $12 million to a team of scientists, led by CU Professor Joseph Ryan, to study fracking.

If the fracking processes were safe and sound, as Gov. Hickenlooper and President Obama want us to believe, then why is it that they see a need to pay $12 million for this study? Why aren’t see LETTERS Page 11

ton to defeat Prop 37. Other mega-buck donors to the anti-consumer campaign include General Mills (owner of Muir Glen), Dean Foods (owner of Horizon organic milk), plus giant deceivers like Campbell Soup, Coca-Cola, ConAgra, Hershey, Hormel, Nestle, Ocean Spray, PepsiCo and Sara Lee. The fun part is that the organic subsidiaries of these giants support the Right-to-Know labeling law, and some of them are the ones who’ve outed their corporate parents for financing legalized consumer deception. Nothing like a feisty family squabble to air out the dirty linens and expose some ugly truths.

Company’s labor violations appalling

W

almart is the largest private employer on the planet. The uber-retailer turned 50 this year, and it’s had a somewhat unhappy birthday. For the first time, workers at many stores are on strike around the country. This unrest is an amazing development, since the company is completely union-free in North America.

There is more. A scandal broke out this spring over Walmart’s Mexico executives bribing officials there. Public opposition to Walmart expansion continues (including in Boulder and Denver). At the firm’s annual meeting, many stockholders rebelled against excessive executive salaries.

Recently the National Employment Law Project (NELP), an independent nonprofit, issued a report saying Walmart is a major force driving down labor standards through policies of outsourcing and “squeezing” contractors and workers to cut costs constantly. The report focused on southern California warehouses, where Latino workers suffer a “severe toll,” including violation of minimum wage laws, overtime pay rules and meal break statutes. The U.S. Department of Labor recently ordered

the firm to pay $5.3 million for overtime pay violations.

Numerous economic researchers say the overall effect of Walmart entering an area is to reduce local employment, reduce area wage rates and total payroll, and raise poverty rates.The company has forced many small retailers out of business and destroyed communities in rural America.

Walmart routinely violates American labor law and international law in its fight against unions. Human Rights Watch (in its report “Discounting Rights: Wal-Mart’s Violation of U.S. Workers’ Rights to Freedom of Association”) concluded that the company “has translated its hostility towards union formation into an unabashed, sophisticated, and aggressive strategy to derail worker organizing at its U.S. stores that violates workers’ internationally recognized right to freedom of association.”

Nevertheless, workers keep fighting back. On Oct. 1, 600 supporters of striking Walmart warehouse workers in Elwood, Ill., (near Chicago) held a huge march and civil disobedience event that shut down the warehouse. see WALMART Page 8

Amendment 64, marijuana and how big money affects small business in Colorado

A

mendment 64 isn’t about legalizing marijuana. It’s about money.

Yes, you can vote for it because you want to legally possess an ounce. But that’s already decriminalized — you’re just saving yourself a potential $100 fine.

The ounce you buy at a store will be taxed. From these taxes, $40 million will be directed to schools. By buying that ounce, you’ll help Colorado’s children and teachers.

Maybe you’d rather grow your own.

But even if Amendment 64 passes, that won’t exactly be legal. State law would allow you to grow six plants. But don’t try to grow seven — that’s illegal. So critics contend that Amendment 64 won’t reduce the number of people jailed for marijuana.

But Amendment 64 would still save Colorado law enforcement $12 million a year, according to the Colorado Center on Law and Policy. Even Boulder has victims of robbery, assault, rape — victims who would appreciate that $12 million spent stopping their assailants, not busting marijuana users.

Cultivation is punishable by five years — and Amendment 64 can’t protect you from federal law. Luckily, the feds don’t care about your closet grow.

But what about commercial facilities growing for retail weed stores — like those proposed by Amendment 64?

“There’s this fear that the federal

government will punish us,” acknowledged Christian Sederberg, a lawyer instrumental to Amendment 64.

Fellow medical marijuana (MMJ) lawyer Brian Vicente, co-director of the Amendment 64 campaign, believes they’ll react “the same way they’ve handled medical marijuana, which is largely hands-off.”

Some disagree that the feds have been “hands-off.” Especially those whose businesses were shuttered by the feds.

More than 50 Colorado locations were closed by what some call an aggressive attack by the Obama administration.

Why? According to the Center for Responsive Politics, Democrats received $15 million from the pharmaceutical industry in the 2008 election cycle. And pharmaceutical companies lose profits to MMJ: “Getting off pharmaceuticals” is the most common story heard at most dispensaries.

They could lose more from legalization. They’ve developed drugs containing THC, which the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) moved to reschedule to Schedule II — just for them. The DEA website explains that drug companies’ THC is equivalent to the synthetic, FDA-approved THC. So their natural THC is like synthetic THC, which is legal, which mimics natural THC, which is illegal. What?

THC you grow as Schedule I, like heroin. But in the last 14 years, the pharmaceutical industry has spent $2.3 billion lobbying the government. You haven’t.

If you can procure THC in legal marijuana, you won’t buy it in pricey capsules. So the pharmaceutical industry wouldn’t love Amendment 64. And in this election cycle, campaign contributions have included more than $28 million from them.

No one knows how the federal government will react. Obama has been vague. While Romney feels health care is best left to the states, he can’t be expected to feel similarly about marijuana. So sick patients may be at risk: Federal raids could jeopardize their access to medicine.

“Destroying a cancer patient’s medicine looks bad, politically,” said one concerned owner.

“Destroying weed grown for stoners does not.”

But won’t medical marijuana still exist? Amendment 64 claims to not affect dispensaries; it just gives owners the option to fork over their Medical Marijuana Center (MMC) licenses and apply for a retail license. But MMCs could go out of business: Patients may not renew their MMJ license.

Why pay a doctor and state fee when you can shop elsewhere for free?

If patient numbers dwindle, dispensaries are doomed. Medical marijuana law, which proponents promise will be unaffected, only allows dispensaries to grow six plants per patient. So if a dispensary’s patient numbers drop, so will their allowable plant count. Without enough plants, they can’t grow at their warehouse’s scale. If retail marijuana is

then raided, there will be no medicine for suffering patients.

Is this weedless apocalypse possible?

The attorneys I met with did predict that the feds would wait, rather than reacting immediately. But if the feds get involved, says Mason Tvert, co-director of the campaign, “they could say, ‘You can’t issue non-medical marijuana licenses.’

But they won’t sit back, let businesses get licensed, and then raid them.”

Again, former dispensary owners

might disagree. Many were licensed — only to be shut down.

The licensing process was the only way the state could legally fund the Department of Revenue’s Medical Marijuana Enforcement Division. Nonmedical marijuana regulation would be similar.

“They have to pay for their own programs,” Sederberg explained. “They can’t

be a drain on the state.”

The Department of Revenue’s former Director of Enforcement Matt Cook (who emphasized that he was not speaking for the department) estimated that the Medical Marijuana Enforcement Division (MMED) collected $8 million from the marijuana industry. And spent it. The MMED is broke. It spent $750,000 on tricked-out off-road SUVs (more vehicles than they had staff to drive them). And it spent around $2 million, Cook confirmed, on a futuristic, live-streaming video room where officials could observe everyone in the industry at work. It was never built.

“They might have completed the first step,” Cook explained, “and never made it to the second.”

An inside source clarified: “The MMED never paid the rest of the money in the contract, so the military contracting firm kept the money.”

These expenses, some believe, explain why hopeless dispensaries were allowed to proceed: The state kept its non-refundable application fee of at least $8,750.

“The inspectors would look at these mom-and-pop operations,” said one owner, “and know they couldn’t make all the upgrades required. But they’d let them try anyway.”

One requirement was state-of-the-art surveillance systems, installed by the few companies approved by the MMED (which got fees from the companies). The cameras were needed for the live-streaming video room that was never built.

When the MMED and these costly requirements were created, some alleged that deep pockets within the industry

had lobbied to eliminate their smaller competition. I asked Tvert who had lobbied for HB 10-1284. His list included one group that no longer exists: Coloradans for Medical Marijuana Regulation. A search reveals that the pro-regulation group formed briefly around 1284’s drafting was funded by businesspeople and hired professional lobbyists to meet with lawmakers.

Lobbyists will act again if Amendment 64 passes, the attorneys acknowledged. Application fees are capped, but licensing fees are not; they could “weed out” smaller businesses.

“Hopefully,” said Vicente, “they’ll be less expensive.”

And hopefully, they won’t be spent on fantasy Big-Brother video-streaming rooms or off-road monster trucks. Those decisions will again be left to the DOR. But this time, if Colorado makes history, the country will be watching.

We’ll see a federal reaction that may violate states’ rights. If the feds don’t stop us, Colorado may soon have more money for improving education and stopping violent crime. We’ll have untold revenue and “green jobs” from the new hemp industry. We may inspire the country to imagine dollars better spent — on children, teachers, people. Not enforcing laws that hurt us. Not lobbying lawmakers for corporate interests.

Maybe then — when money doesn’t equal political speech — we’d write laws thoughtfully, considering all interests.

And we’d finally write a law that’s truly about legalizing marijuana.

“You’re so exhausted. In the summer, you’re soaked in sweat. In the winter, you’re freezing. You constantly have bruised shins” from heavy carts with no brakes slamming into workers’ legs.

Meadows came to the warehouse through a temp agency. Warehouse Workers for Walmart, which began organizing in the area in 2009, estimates that 70 percent of Chicago-area warehouse workers are temps, amounting to a “perma-temp system” where workers can work for years without ever being hired full-time. “[Management] is constantly threatening to replace you,” Meadows says.

“They want to send a message to you: that you’re totally expendable. We want

to show that you can stand up to management and keep your job.”

Daniel and Yolanda aren’t just fighting for themselves. Their battle is ours. Most of the jobs created since the Great Recession began are like those of the warehouse workers: temporary, lowwage, no-benefit and high-risk.

Growing inequality is not an accident. The rich are getting richer from the same policies that are making American workers poorer. The political and economic elite (of both parties) has decided that the majority of Americans have to continue to suffer a fall in living standards. They talk vaguely of “austerity” and “sacrifice.” But they are really discussing how much to screw us

over. They have genuine differences on this question (and bigger differences on other issues). It is crucial to support centrist Democrats like Barack Obama in the elections for defensive reasons and to work with progressive Democrats to create a better agenda for our future. Center-left economists have all kinds of plans for a “high-road” strategy toward raising future living standards.

We need to build a broad-based coalition to push for this strategy.

At the rally, workers told of backbreaking work for little pay, management retaliation, gender discrimination and dangerous working conditions.

Yolanda Davidson says she “was sexually harassed on a regular basis,” recounting an incident of being locked in a trailer by male co-workers. After she reported the incident, management did nothing. Warehouse Workers for Justice say such reports are common.

CITY WEBSITE UNDER THE KNIFE, FINALLY City of Boulder officials recently announced that they are asking the community to weigh in on the design of the city’s new website. Turns out that the site, which is expected to launch in early 2013, will feature a new content management system, “an updated aesthetic and new functionality.”

New functionality?

Meaning, like, it functions and you can find what you are looking for? What a novel idea.

Those who have attempted to find recordings of city council meeting minutes (hint: click on a Channel 8 link), search council members’ spotty financial disclosures or do a multi-part exposé on a certain city-owned butte on the east side of town can attest to the fact that the current site is, well, not exactly comprehensive.

You’d have better luck cruising down to the city records office in person and requesting what you want, and even then, what you’re looking for will be missing a significant portion of the time.

We’ve heard complaints about missing audio and video recordings of past meetings, broken links, the removal of files and renaming documents with titles unrelated to their content.

So this is, indeed, good news that the city website will undergo an overhaul.

Those who want to weigh in on which of three designs to select can cast their vote through the end of the day Oct. 11, at www.bouldercolorado.gov/website/mockups.

Looking at the options, it looks like the basic organizational layout is already done, and it’s just a question of how you want your buttons, colorful promotional photos of the Flatirons and fonts to look.

As a wise person once said, “Content is king.” What we’re more interested in is whether you can easily find public records you are looking for.

This better not just be a new coat of paint on a broken-down jalopy.

BALLOT BLUES Oh, the irony.

Boulder County Clerk and Recorder Hillary Hall, a Democrat, turning to a Republican secretary of state who has a sordid ethical history for guidance on election integrity.

Yes, folks, as you may remember, it is our very own Secretary of State Scott Gessler who has repeatedly come under fire for things like wanting to moonlight with his former election law firm just after being elected to the office that, um, oversees elections.

Closer to home, and before his SOS term, he was the attorney representing the right-wing group that Hillary Hall sued the city of Longmont a few years ago over its campaign transparency regulations aimed at disclosing candidates’ donors. Gessler also represented Western Tradition Partnership, a conservative group that ran attack campaigns against Democrats and bankrolled dirty tactics in the 2009 Longmont City Council race between Katie Witt and Karen Benker.

So now Hall, who we honestly think means well, is in the middle of a spat with election activists over things like how those designated as “watchers” are permitted to monitor pre-election activities.

And it’s Gessler, who himself was targeted with a Scott Gessler laundry list of complaints from the state’s clerks this week, who must offer direction and guidance to Hall.

What a sad state of affairs. Hopefully the presidential election doesn’t end up hinging on hanging chads in Colorado, because we could well become the laughingstock of the nation, or the subject of its ire.

we, in the United States, following the precautionary principle that European countries follow regarding industrial processes? The precautionary principle states that if an action or policy has a suspected risk of causing harm to the public or to the environment then the burden of proof that it is not harmful falls on those taking the action.

This is a replay of a bad horror movie. Whenever “our” government and industry decide that they want to put big bucks into the pockets of a few at the expense of the many, such as with GMOs and factory farming, then they proceed with their goal and they totally ignore the precautionary principle. This is apparently because the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution trumps all other parts of the Constitution. The next step is to ignore the citizenry. For fracking, this step is evidenced by the fact that none of the local grassroots groups were quoted in the news coverage about the $12 million study. The next step will be to direct everybody towards this study, which will drag on for years. Then, even if this study concludes that fracking should be banned immediately, our legislative bodies will have to deliberate for years more. All the while, fracking will be allowed in our neighborhoods and beside our schools. In a more realistic scenario, the comments of the lead researcher make it clear that their task is to actually facilitate and justify fracking, rather than to curtail it. Professor Ryan said in a statement, “We all create demand for natural gas, so we have to accept some of the outcomes of its extraction.”

If the $12 million could have gone to solar and wind incentives, then it would have furthered the public interest to a greater extent than a study with a predestined conclusion. Please skip the study and give the money back to the taxpayer as an incentive for wind and solar!

In 2010 Encana paid $200,000 in fines for violating the Migratory Bird Treaty Act in the Piceance Basin, a geologic formation holding large reserves of coal, natural gas and oil shale. eople who get their information exclusively from mainstream media sources may be surprised at the lack of enthusiasm on the

left for President Barack Obama in this crucial election. But that’s probably because they weren’t exposed to the full online furor sparked by Obama’s continuation of his predecessor’s overreaching approach to national security, such as signing the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act, which allows the indefinite detention of those accused of supporting terrorism, even U.S. citizens.

We’ll never know how this year’s election would be different if the corporate media adequately covered the NDAA’s indefinite detention clause and many other recent attacks on civil liberties. What we can do is spread the word and support independent media sources that do cover these stories. That’s where Project Censored comes in.

Project Censored has been documenting inadequate media coverage of crucial stories since it began in 1967 at Sonoma State University. Each year, the group considers hundreds of news stories submitted by readers, evaluating their merits. Students search Lexis Nexis and other databases to see if the stories were underreported, and if so, the stories are factchecked by professors and experts in relevant fields.

Top 25 stories and rates their significance. The project maintains a vast online database of underreported news stories that it has “validated” and publishes them in an annual book. Censored 2013: Dispatches from the Media Revolution will be released Oct. 30.

For the second year in row, Project Censored has grouped the Top 25 list into topical “clusters.” This year, categories include “Human cost of war and violence” and “Environment and health.” Project Censored Director Mickey Huff told us the idea was to show how various undercovered stories fit together into an alternative narrative, not to say that one story was more censored than another.

In May, while Project Censored was working on the list, another 2012 list was issued: the Fortune 500 list of the biggest corporations, whose influence peppers the Project Censored list in a variety of ways.

Consider this year’s top Fortune 500 company: ExxonMobil. The oil company pollutes everywhere it goes, yet most stories about its environmental devastation go underreported.

Weapons manufacturers Lockheed Martin (58 on the Fortune list), General Dynamics (92), and Raytheon (117) are tied into stories about U.S. prisoners in slavery conditions manufacturing parts for their weapons and the underreported war crimes in Afghanistan and Libya.

These powerful corporations work together more than most people think. In the chapter exploring the “global 1 percent,” writers Peter Philips and Kimberly Soeiro explain how a small number of well-connected people control the majority of the world’s wealth. In it, they use Censored story number 6, “Small network of corporations run the global economy,” to describe how a network of transnational corporations are deeply interconnected, with 147 of them controlling 40 percent of the global economy’s total wealth.

For example, Philips and Soeiro write that in one such company, BlackRock Inc., “The 18 members of the board of directors are connected to a significant part of the world’s core financial assets. Their decisions can change empires, destroy currencies and impoverish millions.”

Another cluster of stories, “Women and Gender, Race and Ethnicity,” notes a pattern of underreporting stories that affect a range of marginalized groups. This broad category includes only three articles, and none are listed in the top 10. The stories reveal mistreatment of Palestinian women in Israeli prisons, includ-

ing being denied medical care and shackled during childbirth, and the rape and sexual assault of women soldiers in the U.S. military. The third story in the category concerns an Alabama anti-immigration bill, H.B. 56, that caused immigrants to flee Alabama in such numbers that farmers felt a dire need to “help farms fill the gap and find sufficient labor.” So the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries approached the state’s Department of Corrections about making a deal where prisoners would replace the fleeing farm workers.

But with revolutionary unrest around the world, and the rise of a mass movement that connects disparate issues together into a simple, powerful class analysis — the 99 percent versus the 1 percent paradigm popularized by Occupy Wall Street — this year’s Project Censored offers an element of hope.

It’s not easy to succeed at projects that resist corporate dominance, and when it does happen, the corporate media is sometimes reluctant to cover it.

Number seven on the Top 25 list is the story of how the United Nations designated 2012 the International Year of the Cooperative, recognizing the rapid growth of co-op businesses, organizations that are part-owned by all members and whose revenue is shared equitably among members. One billion people worldwide now work in co-ops.

The Year of the Cooperative is not the only goodnews story discussed by Project Censored this year. In Chapter 4, Yes! Magazine’s Sarah Van Gelder lists “12 ways the Occupy movement and other major trends have offered a foundation for a transformative future.”

They include a renewed sense of “political selfrespect” and fervor to organize in the United States, debunking of economic myths such as the “American dream,” and the blossoming of economic alternatives such as community land trusts, time banking and micro-energy installations.

As Dr. Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed writes in the book’s foreword, “The majority of people now hold views about Western governments and the nature of power that would have made them social pariahs 10 or 20 years ago.”

Citing polls from the corporate media, Mosaddeq writes: “The majority are now skeptical of the Iraq War; the majority want an end to U.S. military involvement in Afghanistan; the majority resent the banks and financial sector, and blame them for the financial crisis; most people are now aware of environmental issues, more than ever before, and despite denialist confusion promulgated by fossil fuel industries, the majority in the United States and Britain are deeply concerned about global warming; most people are wary of conventional party politics and disilluBoulder Weekly

sioned with the mainstream parliamentary system.”

“In other words,” he writes, “there has been a massive popular shift in public opinion toward a progressive critique of the current political economic system.”

And ultimately, it’s the public — not the president and not the corporations—that will determine the future. There may be hope after all. Here’s Project Censored’s Top 10 list for 2013:

1. Signs of an emerging police state President George W. Bush is remembered largely for his role in curbing civil liberties in the name of his “war on terror.” But it’s President Obama who signed the 2012 NDAA, including its clause allowing for indefinite detention without trial for terrorism suspects.

Obama promised that “my administration will interpret them to avoid the constitutional conflict” — leaving us adrift if and when the next administration chooses to interpret them otherwise. Another law of concern is the National Defense Resources Preparedness Executive Order that Obama issued in March 2012. That order authorizes the president, “in the event of a potential threat to the security of the United States, to take actions necessary to ensure the availability of adequate resources and production capability, including services and critical technology, for national defense requirements.” The president is to be advised on this course of action by “the National Security Council and Homeland Security Council, in conjunction with the National Economic Council.” Journalist Chris Hedges, along with coplaintiffs including Noam Chomsky and Daniel Ellsberg, won a case challenging the NDAA’s indefinite detention clause on Sept. 1, when a federal judge blocked its enforcement, but her ruling was overturned on Oct. 3, so the clause is back.

2. Oceans in peril Big banks aren’t the only entities that our country has deemed “too big to fail.” But our oceans won’t be getting a bailout anytime soon, and their collapse could compromise life itself. In a haunting article highlighted by Project Censored, Mother Jones reporter Julia Whitty paints a tenuous seascape — overfished, acidified, warming — and describes how the destruction of the ocean’s complex ecosystems jeopardizes the entire planet, not just the 70 percent that is water. Whitty compares ocean acidification, caused by global warming, to acidification that was one of the causes of the “Great Dying,” a mass extinction 252 million years ago. Life on Earth took 30 million years to recover. In a more hopeful story, a study of 14 protected and 18 non-protected ecosystems in the Mediterranean Sea showed dangerous levels of biomass depletion. But it also showed that the marine reserves were wellenforced, with five to 10 times larger fish populations than in unprotected areas. This encourages establishment and maintenance of more reserves.

3. U.S. deaths from Fukushima A plume of toxic fallout floated to the U.S. after Japan’s tragic Fukushima nuclear disaster on March 11, 2011. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Boulder Weekly

found radiation levels in air, water and milk that were hundreds of times higher than normal across the United States. One month later, the EPA announced that radiation levels had declined, and they would cease testing. But after making a Freedom of Information Act request, journalist Lucas Hixson published emails revealing that on March 24, 2011, the task of collecting nuclear data had been handed off from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to the Nuclear Energy Institute, a nuclear industry lobbying group. And in one study that got little attention, scientists Joseph Mangano and Jeanette Sherman found that in the period following the Fukushima meltdowns, 14,000 more deaths than average were reported in the U.S., mostly among infants. Later, Mangono and Sherman updated the number to 22,000.

4. FBI agents responsible for terrorist plots We know that FBI agents go into communities such as mosques, both undercover and in the guise of building relationships, quietly gathering information about individuals. This is part of an approach to finding what the FBI now considers the most likely kind of terrorists, “lone wolves.” Its strategy: “seeking to identify those disgruntled few who might participate in a plot given the means and the opportunity. And then, in case after case, the government provides the plot, the means, and the opportunity,” writes Mother Jones journalist Trevor Aaronsen.

The publication, along with the Investigative Reporting Program at the University of California-Berkeley, examined the results of this strategy, 508 cases classified as terrorism-related that have come before the U.S. Department of Justice since the 9/11 terrorist attacks of 2001. In 243 of these cases, an informant was involved; in 49 cases, an informant actually led the plot. And “with three exceptions, all of the high-profile domestic terror plots of the last decade were actually FBI stings.”

5. Federal Reserve loaned trillions to major banks The Federal Reserve, the U.S.’s quasi-private central bank, was audited for the first time in its history this year. The audit report states, “From late 2007 through mid-2010, Reserve Banks provided more than a trillion dollars ... in emergency loans to the financial sector to address strains in credit markets and to avert failures of individual institutions believed to be a threat to the stability of the financial system.” These loans had significantly less interest and fewer conditions than the highprofile TARP bailouts, and were rife with conflicts of interest.

Some examples: the CEO of JP Morgan Chase served as a board member of the New York Federal Reserve at the same time that his bank received more than $390 billion in financial assistance from the Fed. William Dudley, who is now the New York Federal Reserve president, was granted a conflict of interest waiver to let him

keep investments in AIG and General Electric at the same time the companies were given bailout funds. The audit was restricted to Federal Reserve lending during the financial crisis. On July 25, 2012, a bill to audit the Fed again, with fewer limitations, authored by Rep. Ron Paul, passed the House of Representatives. H.R. 459 was expected to die in the Senate, but the movement behind Paul and his calls to hold the Fed accountable, or abolish it altogether, seem to be growing.

6. Small network of corporations run the global economy Reporting on a study by researchers from the Swiss Federal Institute in Zurich didn’t make the rounds nearly enough, according to Censored 2013.

They found that, of 43,060 transnational companies, 147 control 40 percent of total global wealth. The researchers also built a model visually demonstrating how the connections between companies — what it calls the “super entity” — works. Some have criticized the study, saying control of assets doesn’t equate to ownership. True, but as we clearly saw in the 2008 financial collapse, corporations are capable of mismanaging assets in their control to the detriment of their actual owners. And a largely unregulated super entity like this is vulnerable to global collapse.

7. The International Year of Cooperative

Can something really be censored when it’s straight from the United Nations? According to Project Censored evaluators, the corporate media underreported the U.N. declaring 2012 to be the International Year of the Cooperative, based on the co-op business model’s stunning growth. The U.N. found that, in 2012, 1 billion people worldwide are co-op member-owners, or one in five adults over age 15. The largest is Spain’s Mondragon Corporation, with more than 80,000 memberowners. The U.N. predicts that by 2025, workerowned co-ops will be the world’s fastest growing business model. Worker-owned cooperatives provide for equitable distribution of wealth, genuine connection to the workplace, and, just maybe, a brighter future for our planet.

8. NATO war crimes in Libya In January 2012, the BBC “revealed” how British Special Forces agents joined and “blended in” with rebels in Libya to help topple dictator Muammar Gadaffi, a story that alternative media sources had reported a year earlier. NATO admits to bombing a pipe factory in the Libyan city of Brega that was key to the water supply system that brought tap water to 70 percent of Libyans, saying that Gadaffi was storing weapons in the factory. hone records obtained by Boulder Weekly seem to confirm that despite her earlier comments to the contrary, Boulder County Clerk and Recorder Hillary Hall was the one who denied election activists’ Sept. 28 request to observe the ballot printing process.

Russ Boehm, a Republican who was appointed to the canvass board that has been meeting without the clerk’s blessing in recent weeks, says he contacted the county’s print vendor, Integrated Voting Solutions (IVS), on Sept.

28, identified himself as the canvass board’s chair, and asked if he and some election “watchers” could observe the printing process that weekend. Boehm says he was told by an IVS executive that such a visit was not only permissible, but that the facility has a dedicated viewing area equipped with video monitors for that purpose.

Boehm says their scheduled visit the next day was confirmed by Mike Rockenstein of IVS at around 3:30 p.m., but Rockenstein then called back about 12 minutes later, with what Boehm described as a “shak-

9. Prison slavery in the U.S. On its website, the UNICOR manufacturing corporation proudly proclaims that its products are “made in America.”

That’s true, but they’re made in places in the U.S. where labor laws don’t apply, with workers often paid just 23 cents an hour to be exposed to toxic materials 14 October 11, 2012

with no legal recourse. These places are U.S. prisons. Slavery conditions in prisons aren’t exactly news. It’s literally written into the Constitution; the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery, outlaws “slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted.” But the articles highlighted by Project Censored this year reveal the current state of prison slavery industries, and its ties to war.

The majority of products manufactured by inmates are contracted to the Department of Defense. Inmates make complex parts for missile systems, battleship anti-aircraft guns and landmine sweepers, as well as nightvision goggles, body army and camouflage uniforms. Of course, this is happening in the context of record high imprisonment in the U.S., where grossly disproportionate numbers of African Americans and Latinos are imprisoned, and can’t vote even after they’re freed. As psychologist Elliot D. Cohen puts it in this year’s book:

“This system of slavery, like that which existed in this country before the Civil War, is also racist, as more than 60 percent of U.S. prisoners are people of color.”

10. H.R. 347 criminalizes protest H.R. 347, sometimes called the “criminalizing protest” or “anti-Occupy” bill, made some headlines. But concerned lawyers and other citizens worry that it could have disastrous effects for the First Amendment right to protest. Officially called the Federal Restricted Grounds Improvement Act, the law makes it a felony to “knowingly” enter a zone restricted under the law, or engage in “disorderly or disruptive” conduct in or near the zones. The restricted zones include anywhere the Secret Service

may be — places such as the White House, areas hosting events deemed “National Special Security Events,” or anywhere visited by the president, vice president and their immediate families; former presidents, vice presidents and certain family members; certain foreign dignitaries; major presidential and vice presidential candidates (within 120 days of an election); and other individuals as designated by a presidential executive order. T

he director of a state ethics organization says that the city of Boulder needs to change its model of having a city attorney hired by city council serve as its members’ advisor — and enforcer — when it comes to appearances of impropriety and ethical breaches.

Luis Toro, director of Colorado Ethics Watch, responded to one of the subjects that city council began to tackle this week at an Oct. 9 study session on ethics and financial reporting: Is it appropriate to have someone employed by the council be in charge of prosecuting violations of the council’s own code of conduct?

It seems like it could be a conflict of interest in and of itself, especially when considering that the city attorney is also charged with counseling council members about what is and isn’t an ethics violation.

“Definitely, that’s something they need to change,” Toro told Boulder Weekly. “Even if in practice it hasn’t been much of a problem, you can easily imagine a situation where it would be a problem.”

Following up on claims made by council outcast Seth Brigham that certain elected officials had been less than forthright about their financial dealings and relationships, BW uncovered a host of incorrect or omitted information on council members’ financial disclosure forms, discoveries that helped fuel the city’s current effort to re-examine its practices in this area. City Attorney Tom Carr has dismissed the possible violations as, among other things, a symptom of unclear language on forms.

Toro says that when confronted with possible ethics valuations, some cities turn to other cities’ attorneys for assistance, to avoid the conflict of having an employee put in the position of policing his or her employers.

Even Boulder called on the Fort Collins city attorney to investigate an alleged code of conduct violation in 2007.

But as it stands now, the decision on whether to turn to another city’s attorney lies with Carr, so he’s ultimately the one making the decision about which of his bosses’ shortcomings should be investigated.

“It’s tough for the people to expect the city attorney to say ‘no’ to their boss,” Toro says. “It puts the attorney Boulder Weekly

in a very difficult situation, really.”

He suggests creating an outside group to assess ethical dilemmas, an option council members are expected to take up at their next ethics study session on Oct. 23.

“I think a better solution for Boulder would be to have a local ethics commission, like Denver and Colorado Springs,” Toro says, adding that Colorado Ethics Watch is currently surveying the landscape of home-rule communities like Boulder to see which ones have such commissions.

“Some other cities have much worse systems,” he explains. “We looked at Trinidad. It’s almost a joke, because city council ends up deciding ethics complaints against themselves.

So that’s kind of the other end of the scale, and completely ineffective. So it could be worse, Boulder. At least they’re not asking to pass judgment on themselves.”

He says the Colorado Springs iteration of the ethics commission has three members, while Denver’s has five. The state’s Independent Ethics Commission allows no more than two of its five members to be from the same political party.

“An independent ethics board is going to be a lot better at judging appearances and what a reasonable person in the community would think is a conflict,” Toro says. “The idea is they’re there to represent the conscience of the community.”

When asked about the immunity from prosecution granted to council members who seek advice from the city attorney on possible ethics violations in advance, Toro acknowledged that such a model should not be used after the fact, to excuse behavior that the attorney advises against.

“You have to follow the advice, guidance, if you want to claim it as a defense,” he says, adding that one positive thing about such a model is that it “encourages people to get ethics advice in advance, so that if the attorney says no, then they don’t do it, and you don’t have an ethics violation.

“So that’s good,” he continues. “It’s cynical to view it strictly as a ‘get out of jail free’ card, and maybe that’s how it’s been used, but the concept should be that people get advice in advance, and then they can avoid ethical problems before they show up.”

f you ask communications staff for Rep. Dan Benishek (R-Michigan) about H.R. 2834, the representative’s proposed bill on hunting and fishing access, they’ll quickly clarify that, despite claims, the bill does not apply to wilderness areas. Benishek probably doesn’t mean any harm.

He’s got the sweet-eyed earnestness of someone who just wants a few rounds alone in the woods with some buckshot.

“It’s hard for me to think of something I enjoy more than heading out from my camp in the Ottawa National Forest during late September and doing some bird hunting. Our goal with this legislation is to make that possible for future generations of sportsmen,” Benishek said in a press release about authoring the bill.

Benishek introduced the bill on Sept. 2, 2011. It’s passed through multiple committees and is, essentially, on hold — the committees have released it for action on the floor with the understanding they can revisit the legislation should it, or a reintroduced incarnation of it, move forward in the House and be referred on to a more favorable Senate or a president even less invested in conservation than President Barack Obama.

The “Recreational Fishing and Hunting Heritage Opportunities Act” (H.R. 2834) calls on federal land managers to ease access to federal lands for people who want to hunt, fish and shoot on those lands.

Nothing in the bill includes any references to allowing, directly or indirectly, roads or vehicles in wilderness areas.”

Officially designated wilderness areas would be protected, but primitive areas not officially marked as roadless wilderness areas would be a different matter.

Wilderness areas that aren’t in the 5 percent of Colorado land protected by wilderness designation would be under an “open until closed” policy. That is, even areas that have pristine conditions would see no more protections from road building, logging and energy development than areas like the BLM land on the now drilled-to-a-pincushion Roan Plateau. Allowing for roadbuilding among permissible activities means those lands could never be closed. They’d never meet the qualifications for wilderness areas after someone had driven all over them.

The implication that roads would be allowed appears in a section that mandates that all other federal land planning documents would need to evaluate the implications for fishing, hunting and shooting opportunities. However, under H.R. 2834, no decision that would increase hunting and fishing opportunities would require an official study of the environmental effects. Land managers adding hunting and fishing

Facilitating use, as the act calls for, implies letting these land managers permit people to drive ATVs, snowmobiles, motorbikes, motorboats and other motorized vehicles — even use a chainsaw, should trailblazing require it — onto those lands to hunt, fish and shoot on them. That equates to creating roads and allowing for traffic, both of which would degrade pristine forests and threaten wildlife.

The report on the bill from the Republican-led Congressional Committee on Natural Resources argues otherwise. The impacts of an “open until closed” policy in terms of road building and motorized vehicle use may be disputed by the Congressman, but the intent is clear: to strip the footing from lawsuits seeking to close hunting and fishing in selected wilderness and wildlife refuge areas. In the wake of court decisions requiring wildlife managers to study the affects of fishing and hunting on wildlife refuge areas, the legislation is meant to “ensure that anti-fishing/ anti-hunting activists may not use these recent court precedents to attack fishing or hunting within wilderness areas as not being ‘necessary.’”

Though environmental impact studies that examine the effects of hunting and fishing on refuges and wilderness areas are deemed an unnecessary draw on resources, federal land managers would be required to submit annual reports about areas closed to hunting and fishing.

“H.R. 2834 uses an issue on which there is broad agreement — the importance of hunting and fishing on public lands — as cover to make harmful, backdoor changes to conservation laws,” the committee’s dissenting views report argues. “If enacted, H.R. 2834 would destroy the wilderness character of most designated wilderness areas and permanently alter wildlife refuge management. As a result, the enactment of H.R. 2834 would destroy wildlife habitat, severely limiting opportunities for the recreational pursuits the bill claims to protect.”

I

n the early 2000s, Boulder Weekly sent freelance writer James Dziezynski out to research a series of stories on great, little-known places to hike around town.

The time Dziezynski spent on his feet then, and on more than 600 other summits around the state, schooled him so thoroughly in what Colorado foot paths have to offer that he penned a book revealing their secrets. Best Summit Hikes in Colorado details non-technical scrambles up 14ers, “secret” summits and peaks in every mountain range with elevations from 8,144 feet (Green Mountain) to 14,443 feet (Mount Elbert), with driving directions and GPS data.

Each route sets itself out from the sea of options in Colorado with a notable feature — the site of a ghost town, a waterfall, an airplane wreck, a great meadow for wildflowers or wildlife spotting. The second edition of Best Summit Hikes in Colorado, first published in 2007, was released this year, and Dziezynski is touring to promote the book. Boulder Weekly caught up with him to get a little more background.

I heard the second edition includes 16 new summits and seven new routes.

What are some of the additions?

For the second edition of Best Summit Hikes in Colorado, I looked at peaks nearby existing routes in the ON THE BILL: James book. I went out and revisited about 20 the Boulder Book Store, 1107 of the hikes in the book and came up with some wonder- Pearl St., Boulder. ful options, such as Carbonate Mountain and Cyclone Peak near Tabeguache Peak in the Sawatch Range and Little Agnes Peak #1 and Little Agnes Peak #2 in the Zirkel Wilderness. Some of the new routes are simply updates to trailhead changes, but others, such as Mount Deming in the Gore Range, offer a new standard route with a variety of optional peaks.

What were some of the challenges in coming out with this edition?

Map updates were a time-consuming challenge, but I think the extra time put into them is worth it. Every map was redesigned from the ground up, and several GPS tracks had to be updated by getting out in the field and redoing the hikes.

It was also important to edit some of the more wordy parts of the first edition to make the book more concise. One of the bonuses of a print guidebook, as opposed to online guides, is you get a good “how to” section in the front of the book that covers everything from gear to meteorology. Making sure all of that information was up to date, while simultaneously cutting out any excess material, took some time.

In your writing for Boulder Weekly’s outdoors section for the last eight years, which of these hikes been written up in our pages?

several hikes that eventually made it into the book, including Navajo Peak in the Indian Peaks, Mount Alice in RMNP and the trio of Green Mountain, Bear Peak and South Boulder Peak right in our own backyard. Some of the positive response from BW readers helped encourage the initial decision to create a bigger, more in-depth book.

Where’s the town flattened by an avalanche? And the fossilized seashells?

There are actually a few ghost towns in the book that fell victim to avalanches, but the most prominent is Masontown at the base of Peak One in Frisco. It was one of many boomtowns of the era and it serviced the Victoria Mine, which had the unfortunate distinction of being in the direct line of an established avalanche path. It was demolished in 1912, rebuilt, then demolished again in 1926. It was rebuilt yet again, only to burn down in 1968 and since then, it is nothing more than a graveyard of old foundations, mining ruins and a few brick porches.

The seashells are somewhat common in the Elk Range, an area that was part of an inland ocean about 70,000 years ago. The soft sediment was perfect for impressing shells and floral, and it’s not unusual to find undersea fossils well over 13,000 feet. My own experience has found many on Belleview Mountain and Treasury Mountain, both near Crested Butte.

So you’ve climbed more than 600 peaks in Colorado — how long has that taken?

I made Colorado my home in 1999 so all told, about 13 years. I actually made a tally of named summits that I had photos of or recorded in my journal and the total unique summits were 653.

This doesn’t include repeat visits to some of my favorites, such as Longs Peak (11 times), Mount Elbert (10 times) or venerable ol’ Mount Audubon

(more times that I can count). I did have a period of about three years where I lived a rather Spartan life, freelancing and hiking like crazy. The great thing about Colorado is that there are many places where a good ridgewalk can net you two, three or even 10 summits in a single outing. This is the way I like to hike ranges that are far from Boulder. A good example is Weston Pass in Leadville, where a strong, eight- to 10-hour day can net you 10 to 12 official summits.

But in terms of being a mountain veteran, I’m still well behind a lot of the diehards in the state. Heck, there’s over 700 13ers alone, so I still have many, many more mountains to climb.

Outside Colorado, you’ve climbed mountains in Greenland, Antarctica, Central America and the Canadian Arctic. What’s the favorite among those?

Any climbing in the polar regions is a special treat. There’s a beauty and energy in those remote peaks that I’ve never experienced anywhere else, not to mention much of the rock in Greenland and the Arctic is some of the oldest stone on the planet. I’m not an elite mountaineer, so I’m not putting up the hardest lines, but simply getting to those faraway places and stepping into the unknown is quite delightful.

Mountain climbing in central America — and the Caribbean — is a very different experience but still quite amazing. There’s still a lot of geothermal activity in these peaks. Places like Dominca have some legit peaks with vertical gains of upwards of 6,000 feet.

Even though you’re likely in trees the entire time, there’s technical sections that are quite surprising and unlike traditional mountaineering. One of my favorites is the scramble to Mount Nevis on Nevis Island, a jungle climb to an open summit overlooking the vast Caribbean Sea.

What keeps you coming back to summits in Colorado?

I’m amazed that after all the time I’ve spent in the mountains, I continue to discover so much in the Rockies. I love the physical side of mountain climbing, working hard for a goal that locks your focus and lets the trappings of the frontcountry slip away for a while. I love the challenge of route-finding. And all of the visceral sensations, from standing on the summit to all the animals and flora, the creeks and lakes — all of that is hard to resist. Ultimately though, I find sharing mountains with friends (both human and canine) is incredibly rewarding. If you pardon the term, it’s a very intimate experience to endure the hardships of a mountain together and to soak in your fleeting rewards as a team.

I

t is not the preferred style of Professor Richard Dawkins, the famed evolutionary biologist and militant atheist crusader who has tussled with everyone from Bill O’Reilly to Catholic cardinals, to preach to the choir.

No, the Oxford-educated Dawkins is a fiery and articulate orator, and over the past decades as he has established himself as one of the foremost atheist public intellectuals. He has sought out debating partners with whom to publicly spar, hoping to trounce his opponents with sharp arguments and a quick, daggered tongue.

So given his penchant for challenging theists in the Bible Belt, it might seem that his Oct. 15 lecture at Macky Auditorium is an exercise in futility — Boulder is pretty godless, unless you count those who cling to their yoga mats and acupuncture meridians. But it turns out that the event planned for the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs was hastily rescheduled and moved to Boulder after the original was canceled for “reasons that remain mysterious,” as Dawkins says. (We might have some ideas as to why.)

When asked why he prefers speaking in areas that might naturally oppose his ideas, he reacts as if it’s a no-brainer.

“If they were antagonistic, that would be a good reason for speaking there — because one wants to have an influence — but surprisingly they’re not all that antagonistic,” Dawkins tells Boulder Weekly. “One of the most impressive things is that the most enthusiastic audiences I get seem to be those in the south, in the Bible Belt, and if you think about it, that’s not really all that surprising.

uitarist/songwriter Tommy Castro, one of the West Coast blues scene’s hardest-working and most ferociously engaging figures, swings back into Boulder tonight for a midweek gig at the Outlook. For a guy who plays the Blues Cruise once or twice a year and festivals around the nation, even taking his blues/soul gig to Europe (he has a date in Paris later this month), Boulder nonetheless holds a special place in his itinerary.

without all the brass behind him.

“Yeah, and that was all part of the deal,” Castro says. “I wanted to push myself a little. I’m using a couple of different guitars and a few effects. Back in the original band, I only ever really used a [Fender] Super-Reverb [amplifier] with a Strat plugged into it, and that was my sound. No effects at all. I put out so many records with that, and I went back and listened to them, and I thought to myself, ‘Man that guitar sounds exactly the same on every single song.’”

He laughs a little at the epiphany.

“Maybe I should do something a little different now.”

These are dicey choices, of course.

It’d be easy enough to reprise, for example, his 2009 release Hard Believer, his debut CD for Alligator Records and one of the genre’s most vital releases of that year. The CD and title track buried the longtime Bay Area musician with awards and accolades, both locally and nationally, feeling a little like the capstone of a near 20-year solo career.

Castro agrees it was a stage-lights moment for him. But is it time to get a little dirt under the fingernails?

Castro laughs.

“Yeah, I’m having a midlife crisis, I think. Gotta rock out!” he says.

Beth Orton rediscovers her groove with ‘Sugaring Season’

eth Orton’s voice is the milky cloud of cream in your coffee gently dispersing like last light before the twilight. Her trilling coo is sweet and tender but also urgent and foreboding. Almost two decades ago, the U.K. songstress was the girl-ofthe-moment first highlighted on dance tracks (William Orbit, Chemical Brothers) and then on her own award-winning solo releases.

But it’s been six years since Orton’s last album, Comfort of Strangers. After having a couple children, getting married and moving to the country, it seemed like something that maybe wasn’t going to happen again. In a way she lost her nerve, making the arrival of her latest, Sugaring Season, that much more special.

“It does feel like a new beginning,” she says from a tour stop, trying to be heard over her screaming 1-year old, Arthur. Husband/opening act Sam Amidon calms the kid while she talks. “It does feel like a while ago. In a way it seems quite surreal. The record coming out and playing new songs with old songs, and trying to make it seem more seamless.”

Working with Orbit and The Chemical Brothers’ Tom Rowland encouraged Orton to initially incorporate electronic background textures and loops with her singer/songwriter folk. The wags dubbed it “folktronica.” Her 1996 debut, Trailer Park, received the U.K.’s Mercury Prize, given to the year’s best English album. The droning textures, the spare subtle strum and her siren vocals were quite affecting.

But it’s more than a pretty tone — her voice possesses rare plaintive power. It’s poised between doubt

and assurance. On her finest track, “Stolen Car” (off 1999’s Central Reservation) she believes a rekindled flame’s claim, to have “stood for every known abuse that was ever, that was ever promised to anyone like you / Don’t you wish you knew better by now when you’re old enough not to?”

She discovers her mistake after a night of drinking: “I see a face drive like a stolen car / Gets harder to hide when you’re hitching a ride, harder to hide what you really saw / Oh yeah you stand for every known abuse I’ve ever seen or went through / Don’t I wish I knew better by now, well I think I’m starting to.”

When Orton had her first child, Anne, five years ago, it started to change Orton’s outlook. Suddenly the things she found so precious changed. “That artifice starts to fall away and you start writing from your inside out instead of the outside in,” she says.

“It’s a much more restful way of living and working.”

By the time Arthur was born last year, she was in an entirely different place, ready to make music again. The tension between doubt and assurance that had so shaped her music in her 20s and early 30s had dissipated with age, replaced by inner confidence and diffidence.

“Sometimes the doubt does keep you in check, but sometimes it serves to kind of suffocate,” she

says. “I hope that my doubt is now manifested in humility and I think that’s possibly a healthier, more positive way of galvanizing that questioning.

I think I confused [doubt] with humility before, and now I understand they’re quite different things.”

The result is a beautiful album that feels placid and unburdened. It’s highlighted by tracks like the haunting, string-laden-yet-understated “Something More Beautiful.” On it Orton trades the trick of turning “what’s not so pretty into something more beautiful” for the ability to turn “what could be sorrow into some kind of mercy.” From the hopeful waltz of “See Through Blue” to the lilting “I Wasn’t Born To Follow,” Orton finds a sweet spot of possibility and comfort.

But not too much comfort. She’s been performing solo for the first time in a while, another challenge with its own rewards. “I have set myself a bit of a bloody — it takes a lot of energy to actually be that vulnerable,” she says. “But when it works it’s so satisfying to do it that way.”

She’s not about to give up the band and go solo.

While her alone on guitar or piano may represent the song’s heart and soul, that’s not sufficient.

“It may be the heart and soul, but you need the lungs, the kidneys, the legs, the arms, the head and the hair. You need all the elements to make a full thing,” she says. “For me, working with these musicians is like breathing air, it’s invaluable.”

But for this tour anyway, Orton will channel an MRI and the third eye offering a direct window into her heart and soul.

It feels MONDAy 29 @ script 7 PM ONly like the first draftOct of this may have been quite good, but subsequent rewriting and editing resulted in a rather mushy, shapeless slab of butter.

Still, Corddry gives maybe his most approachable performance ever, maintaining his biting wit while not acting like a completely unlikable douchewaffle, tuESDAy & wEDNESDAy Oct 30 - 31 @ 7 PM ONly and there are a few decent-sized laughs, including Jackman’s willingness to play an awkward moron. Consider this review something less of a full endorsement for Butter and more of a reluctant vote.

W

hen Jamie Corder and Aryn Schlichting started “eating happy” in 2010, they realized that one aspect of their diet was still unhappy.

As they wandered down the salad aisle, they could not find a dressing that matched their needs.

The best friends came to the conclusion that a good, healthy salad dressing just didn’t exist, so they decided they would simply create their own. What started as a solution to what the Colorado pair calls a “common problem” quickly turned into Dressed Up Salad Dressing, a business dedicated to creating dressings that taste as good as they are healthy.

“We started having dinner parties and doing a lot of cooking,” says Schlichting.

“Every time we would go to the grocery store, all of the dressings were unhealthy and uninspired, so we hit the kitchen ourselves.”

After trying their hand at balancing flavor and nutrition in their own kitchens, Schlichting and Corder quickly learned that making dressing is not as easy as it looks. Too many failed attempts led the pair to seek out professional chef Barr Hogen to bring their idea to life.

“She [Hogen] helped us create guidelines for the dressings.

They are all-natural, with simple, familiar ingredients and, most importantly, they add nutrition,” says Schlichting.

Further still, the recipes call for flax seed as an alternative to the common binding agent in dressings, xanthan gum. With the addition of flax seed, the dressing does the double duty of creat-

ing new flavors and enhancing health benefits through fiber and omega-3 fatty acids.

The pair spent six months working with Hogen to create their three naturally delicious dressing flavors: purple carrot, mango and cocoa balsamic.

“Minimally processed foods don’t need a lot of doctoring to make them taste good,” Hogen says via email. “Each of the ingredients in Dressed Up has a lovely flavor profile.

Together they blend into a lovely dressing.”

Hogen explains that salad is only healthy with a good dressing. Many people use dressings that are extremely high in sugar, compromising the value of an otherwise healthy dining choice.

According to Lindsay Lawes of Boulder Nutrition Aryn Schlichting, left, and Jamie Corder and Exercise, people aren’t always careful about the dressings they use.

“People use dressing in excess and usually go for chunky bleu cheese or ranch instead of enjoying the actual flavor of their food,” says Lawes, adding that the most nutritionally sound salad dressings have the fewest ingredients and are olive oil-based rather than mayonnaisebased.

Of the three flavors, Schlichting and Corder decided that purple carrot would lead the movement. The unique flavor combination was the brainchild of Hogen, who suggested the unfamiliar, antioxidant-rich ingredient to the pair as a healthy,

Twisted Pine will be offering a smallbites-and-beer pairing along with a presentation on the history of brew. Ginger Johnson of Women Enjoying Beer and the Twisted Pine Company will take you on an “edutaining” journey of learning and enjoying different ingredients in beer, the history of beer, women in the industry, craft beer creativity and more.

The event will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Twisted Pine Tap Room. Individual tickets are $25, and group discount tickets are $20. The event is limited to 40 people.

Though Schlichting and Corder were relatively unfamiliar with purple carrots, they quickly became fans.

“I’ve worked in the juice industry, and purple carrots are one of my personal favorites,” Hogen says. “I also thought that making a dressing with ingredients that weren’t already in the marketplace would give Aryn and Jamie a leg up.”

Dressed Up Salad Dressing’s purple carrot product is made with raspberry vinegar, beets and, of course, purple carrots. Schlichting describes the flavor as “on the sweeter side because it is 30 percent to 40 percent raspberry vinegar,” but says that it is not overly sweet.

Equally as important as taste and health for Corder and Schlichting was texture. Schlichting says she was always bothered by the chunky, oily textures of salad dressing on the shelves.

“You really don’t need to use very much of our dressing. We wanted something that would sit on the leaves and not just sink straight to the bottom,” she says.

After developing their flavors, and selecting purple carrot as their signature dressing, the pair took to networking 46 October 11, 2012

events to spread the word. These meetings led Corder to a representative from Whole Foods, and the product landed on shelves in Cherry Creek, Basalt and Boulder’s Pearl Street location. Dressed Up Salad Dressing’s owners plan to expand its kitchen and its consumer base on a regional scale with Whole Foods.

Boulder was a natural choice for the expansion of Dressed Up Salad Dressing.

Corder is a resident of Boulder, after all, and Schlichting says that the Boulder mindset fits the product perfectly.

“The community in Boulder is so invested in their food, people are so healthy, and people always want to stop and talk to me,” she says.

Though Dressed Up Salad Dressing targets women between 20 and 40, Schlichting has found that, particularly in Boulder, the dressing has become popular among families and has won the approval of plenty of children.

“We’re really passionate, and we want people to be excited about salad dressing again,” Schlichting says. “We hate the idea of taking a beautiful, healthy salad and ruining it with unhealthy dressing.”
